Marvin V. Curtis I saw a phrase on Facebook that best described our past year, “Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb … it is where the fruit is.” While we were not dangling in danger, the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts went out on many a limb and reaped an abundant harvest.

We started with young trees that were planted, watered and nurtured. As the saplings develop, care must be taken to be sure they are properly fertilized, weeded, and maintained.

A young tree has to withstand several seasons before it can begin to bear fruit, but as it grows it develops longer limbs and deeper roots. Soon it begins to stand up to the elements and produce a yearly harvest. Such has been the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts. Four years ago we were a sapling struggling against the elements and today, because of bold moves by the faculty, staff, and students, our accomplishments are many and our harvest is abundant.

You can read about our harvest within the pages of Aspire magazine. Sapling trees took root with our first appearance at “Friday by the Fountain” and flowered with the exhibition of one of our student’s work at the Smithsonian Institution.

Trees were fertilized with the Steinway rental agreement and the first accreditation visit by the National Association of Schools of Music. Limbs got stronger as we celebrated the 30th anniversary of Speech Night, hosted the Governor’s Arts awards, and enjoyed the triumphant recital by the Toradze Piano Studio with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra.

As this issue of Aspire was going to print, we received word that our 2011 issue won a 2012 Circle of Excellence Award, a Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) program that honors exemplary advancement programs and activities worldwide. This is a

high honor and was the result of the work of the faculty, staff, and student writers and photographers. A word of special thanks to Editor Michele Morgan-Dufour, Designer Tiffany Goehring, Copy Editor Kathy Borlik, Aspire Intern Marianne Weesner, Director of Communications and Marketing Ken Baierl, as well as photographers Michael Banks and Peter Ringenberg.

Our tree grew deep roots as students won national and international piano competitions and traveled to study music in Italy, Spain, and California. Our young sapling began to sprout more limbs and a bigger trunk with the creation of the IU South Bend Dance Company, our first Summer Arts Camp, and theatrical productions at the Lerner Theatre in Elkhart.

The tree grew, reaching new branches to the sky, such as a collaboration between New Media and the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, dance performances of Swan Lake with the IUSB Philharmonic and Carmina Burnana with the South Bend Symphonic Choir, and a gala concert by international opera star Denyce Graves.

We owe a great deal of thanks to the administration of IU South Bend for supporting our many efforts. A big “thank you” to the IUSB Arts Foundation for supporting our vision.

A collective “thank you” to the many donors who have given unselfishly to help our students achieve.

Our goal as a school is to inspire so that our students can aspire for greater heights. We will continue to go out on a limb so students can harvest the fruits of success. Our students inspire us with their achievements and we will keep planting trees that sprout branches that bear much fruit.

Fear not

future journalists, for change is good

In the past few years, journalism as we know it has changed dramatically. While daily newspapers and evening network news broadcasts used to be how people accessed news, now websites, mobile apps, and 24-hour news channels are at the forefront.

These changes not only affect the world around us, but they are affecting journalists and journalism students too. Now, more than ever before, journalists are expected to go beyond their stories and connect with readers.

Journalism students are expected to graduate with more than just writing skills. News organizations, even those that specialize in print or radio, are hiring journalists who can edit video, take pictures, and write an article, all for the same story.

Heidi Prescott has been a reporter at the South Bend Tribune since 1994 and has been teaching journalism to students at IU South Bend since 2003. She’s experienced the changes first hand.

“Not only is news delivered more frequently and faster than ever before, but it is easier than ever before for readers to talk to journalists and for journalists to talk to readers,” she says. “I have been posting on Facebook and tweeting with readers at 10 o’clock on a Friday night - not because I have to, but because I want to.”

It’s not just social media either. News organizations are updating their websites with breaking news faster than waiting for the evening news or morning paper.

“Immediacy has never been more important in how we do our jobs and how frequently we deliver information,” says Prescott. “We don’t just deliver information in a single package that arrives in your newspaper box in print once a day. We are constantly delivering the news.”

Students at IU South Bend who are majoring in journalism should also be taking new media courses. Journalism students should take classes in photography, and video recording and editing, in conjunction with their journalism and writing classes.

“I think it’s a good standard to have,” says Hosterman. “There’s always this rush to be first. In that rush, we forget about the need for accuracy … but outlets are starting to finally figure out the role of social media and get in some procedures and ethics.”

Internships are also invaluable, as they allow students to gain real-world experience and understand more about the field and various media than what can be taught in the classroom.

Prescott says that her students are concerned with the future of newspapers, but she’s honest with them. Despite all of these changes, newspapers aren’t dying, just changing.

“We need people who understand the basics but at the same time embrace the change for the good and seize the potential,” Journalism programs haven’t been able to keep up with the changes, even at larger universities. But that doesn’t mean that students don’t have the ability to receive the education needed today, no matter where they attend school.

But multimedia skills shouldn’t take the place of writing skills or an understanding of the purpose journalism either. Students should continue to be able to write well and be knowledge of the ethical standards, and then apply those to new tools.

“Really what we’re talking about here is a medium shift and a convergence of different tools,” says Alec Hosterman, who teaches courses in communication, rhetoric, new media, and other topics at IU South Bend.

“We need people who understand the basics but at the same time embrace the change for the good and seize the potential,” says Hosterman. “It’s a bigger responsibility, I think, and that’s fine. It’s needed.”

The role of journalism hasn’t changed.

Journalists still aim to tell the truth, no matter what. They continue to interview, research, and do what they can to get the most factual information. They still report on it so that the audience can know what’s going on in the world around them.

But the tools to get the information and then tell the story have morphed.

And while the field of journalism has been going through so many changes in the past five years, there are signs that it’s finally starting to stabilize. Early in 2012, the BBC and Sky News released social media policies that included when and how to break a story on Twitter. The goal of this policy is to not only keep colleagues informed of breaking news, but to also ensure that breaking news is also fact-checked. There have been occasions where stories broken on Twitter turn out to be incorrect. That can be a severe problem for a news organization.

“And multi-media experience is critical. Journalists today should feel just as comfortable writing a story for print as they feel standing in front of a television camera or sitting down to do radio,” says Prescott.

“I’ve always tried to be as honest as possible with my students,” says Prescott. “It is only fair to paint a realistic picture of what is happening in the industry because students need to be prepared to enter a changing industry. The means by which we deliver the news might change, but there will always be a need for professional journalists.”

So fear not. Newspapers aren’t dying.

Journalism isn’t dying. The tools are changing and the medium is changing, so students and journalists have to change, but it’s all for the better.

“Those going into the program now and those graduating are here at a very exciting time because of all of this change,” says Hosterman. “And I think they need to understand that this change is not just a whim, but it’ll be around. So how does the change affect us? Embrace it. Experiment with it.”

Pulsoptional

The campus was occupied for three energetic days by pulsoptional, an ensemble of composers whose distinctive performances combine rock-classical instrumentation with music, film, and interactive video.

Student composers Rex Gard and Spencer Scullion wrote pieces for pulsoptional to perform and record. At the end of the session, Gard and Scullion received a professionalquality recording of their piece.

The experimental North Carolina-based group was brought to campus by one of its members, IU South Bend Assistant Professor of Music Theory John Mayrose.

“I essentially had to learn how to handle a classical ensemble and a rock band side by side,” says Gard. “The end result was a piece that was unlike any of the classically influenced or rock music I’ve written in the past.”

“I do not think it is possible to know me as a composer and musician without knowing pulsoptional,” says Mayrose, who helped form the group more than 10 years ago as he began his graduate career. “My identity as a composer is inseparable from pulsoptional. Bringing them allowed me to share this important aspect of my creative work with colleagues and students.”

Pulsoptional has performed in a variety of settings including traditional music venues, dance clubs, universities, and coffeehouses. Their high-quality and genre-bending performances have drawn listeners of all backgrounds.

The group began the three-day residency with a composition masterclass for 25 music composition students, with an open invitation to students from other music disciplines.

Pulsoptional’s stay ended with a public concert, that featured music from the spring 2012 program titled puls::plus.

“I think it is vital that students witness their professors as practicing musicians active in the field,” says Mayrose. “I make it a point to perform as often as possible. Last year I performed a solo recital of my guitar music and played with the new music ensemble. Bringing pulsoptional is an important extension of this practice.”

The Community Foundation of St. Joseph County and the IUSB Arts Foundation provided grants for the visit.

Dance, Dance Downtown

Downtown South Bend hosts community events on the first Friday evening of every month. In March 2012, it was all about the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts. The theme was “Dance, Dance Downtown!,” and the city pulsated with the sights, sounds, and movements of IU South Bend’s finest student musicians, singers, and dancers.

At the elegant Woodward Banquet Hall, Assistant Professor of Dance Carolynn Hine-Johnson led the IU

South Bend Dance Company in its debut performance featuring men’s contemporary Native American dance, hip-hop infused ballet, and an interactive hip-hop tutorial.

“I love this event, I think it’s fabulous,” said Leeah Oxley, a dance company member and dance minor, after performing in the hip-hop ballet routine. “I think it’s great exposure for IUSB and a great way to promote health and wellness.”

Following the dance company were performances of Middle Eastern dance with Ruby Jazayre, flamenco

with Vladimir Sorokin, and Latin dance with David Seymour. Each demonstration featured IU South Bend dance students followed by audience lessons, and many spectators were eager to join the students on the dance floor to learn some new moves.

Around the corner at Trio’s Restaurant and Jazz Club, Director Darrel Tidaback led the energetic members of the IUSB Jazz Ensemble as they sizzled and smoldered onstage with sounds from the Big Band Era.

Down the street at the South Bend Chocolate Café, Dance Instructor Karen Pajor taught an enthusiastic children’s jazz dance class, much to the delight of the crowded roomful of laughing tots and their parents.

Local mom Amy Scott recognized the benefit of community events for her family. “There are not many things to do in the winter, so it’s been great. We’ve been coming to the past couple of First Fridays and we’ve had a blast.”

While each location featured a unique setting and performance from the Raclin School of the Arts, they all had one thing in common — an eclectic and enthusiastic audience.

“It was a very big night for us,” said Dean Marvin Curtis, who visited each venue. “People got to see what we do.

I think that’s very important for us.”

Downtown South Bend approached the Raclin School of the Arts about sponsoring the evening after positive experiences and community feedback from the school’s participation in the summer 2011 Fridays by the Fountain series, another downtown event that showcased IU South Bend’s best in music, dance, and drama.

MAKE Hospice PR students

By Kim McInerney End of life care for our loved ones is a topic few people like to think about, especially college students. In spring 2012, a class was tasked not only with thinking about the topic, but also strategizing how to get more college students thinking about it. Nineteen students in Senior Lecturer in Communication Arts Alec Hosterman’s Public Relations Research & Planning class were assigned with the mission of raising awareness about the Center for Hospice Care among the collegeaged demographic and provide opportunities for donations.

The first of four plans presented was Cycle at Sunset, a campaign aimed at further developing a current Hospice event that involves biking downtown South Bend to create awareness, and a fundraising after-party for participants and friends.

According to Hosterman, the students pitched their fundraising plans at the end of the semester and Hospice left with four viable plans ready to implement.“It’s a win-win for everyone.”

And the work began. After months of thinking and creating, the four groups presented campaigns.

“Each of the four presentations was excellent. The professionalism of your students, the caliber of thinking they put into their ideas, and the attention to detail were outstanding,” said Cyndy Searfoss, director of communications and annual giving for the Hospice Foundation.

Typically, one student group is chosen.

This year, the organization chose two: Cycle at Sunset and The Big Reveal.

The Center for Hospice Care is an independent, community-based, not-for-profit organization that aims to improve the quality of living in Northern Indiana. The services include hospice, home health, grief counseling, and education. At the start of the semester, representatives from the Hospice Foundation visited campus to speak about hospice, its services, and what they needed from the students.

“Each team is charged to develop a working fundraising plan for our client,” says Hosterman. “Along the way I treat the project the same as they might encounter in a professional setting, complete with external feedback from working professionals and constructive in-class feedback aimed at improving their communication skills.”

“I learned so many new things about myself and what I need to improve on.

I am grateful to everyone involved in this semester and can’t wait to use my experience in the professional world.”

The third plan was Project Umbrella Parade, a campaign that asks people to “open up” about end-of-life planning.

The last presentation was The Big Reveal, a campaign that involves donations for artistic cubes to be displayed in South Bend until ArtBeat, a popular city event. The cubes are

“None of us had ever done anything like this before so it proved to be a very valuable learning experience for each of us,” said student Kelsey Sheets. “Creating something like this is definitely a process. Our final campaign was actually nothing like what we had originally planned. But I think that’s how we knew we were really learning from the process and growing as a group. The project helped us realize what it would actually be like to plan a PR campaign for a professional company.”

Arts Theatre is an art that everyone can learn from. This is what the K-8th grade students at Our Lady of Hungary Catholic School quickly found out thanks to the IU South Bend Players’ Guild.

A group of theatre students decided to revive the guild, with the purpose of bringing theatre arts to the community in exciting new ways.

In partnership with Marian High School and their “Arts Alive” program, designed to provide art lessons to Our Lady of Hungary students, the guild stepped in to introduce theatre.

“It’s a magnificent opportunity for the students because it promotes a creativity that is useful in many aspects of life,” says Jerry Sailor, a senior and secretary of the guild. “We are so excited to have these students helping us this year,” says Kitty Gunty, chair of the art department at Marian.

Gunty says there is a great connection with Marlon Burnley, who is the guild vice president and a Marian graduate. “I am so happy that he has come back to help in a cause he believes in.”

Students from the guild chose the play The Jungle Book as their first project to tackle with the kids. “Everyone knows the story because of the Disney film, and it’s a really fun piece. It was easy for the kids to pick up on the flow of things,” says guild president Kyle Techentin.

Throughout the semester, the children worked on art projects. Using bright colors and lots of imagination, the children made character masks.

“I really like this program. All of the bigger kids are so nice,” says Tania, an eighth-grade student and second-year participant in the program. “I like watching plays, and I have been in a couple before. It will be fun to do it again!”

IU South Bend and Marian students also taught scene construction and t-shirt silk-screening to the students.

“Children’s theatre is one of my favorite aspects when it comes to theatre,” says Burnley. “There is a certain mystery about it, an innocence that is interesting to me. And I truly believe that theatre in this form is where actors find out the most about themselves and what they represent.”

Recently there has been a lot of talk about how in America “we live in a post-racial society,” and the fact that we have a black president is often used as proof that this is the case. This is especially true in regards to mainstream media, and being the media aficionado that I am, the topic is of great interest to me.

Around the time of President Barack Obama’s campaign, racial relations in Brazil were also being discussed in a lively way. Much of that discussion was in reaction to the broadcast of the telanovela Duas Caras, the first to feature an Afro-Brazilian as the central protagonist, openly addressing race matters through plot and dialogue.

The effects of that broadcast are the topic of my book, Brazilian Telenovelas and the Myth of Racial Democracy.

Telanovelas are a distant cousin of the American soap opera. They dominate prime time programming in most Latin America. Produced with high production values, a telanovela typically broadcasts for about nine months and is viewed by a demographically diverse audience.

Although Brazil has always been racially and culturally diverse, this diversity has not been reflected on television, especially not in telenovelas. While the genre has been the most popular program type in Latin America for the past 30 years, traditionally, when it comes to Brazil, African descendants have been virtually invisible or relegated to secondary roles. The good news is that this is changing.

Writers and politicians have been making a conscious effort to introduce a more diverse cast as well as incorporate storylines that address matters of race and racism in a country that was once believed to be a “racial democracy.”

Duas Caras, which aired from October 2007 to May 2008, was a watershed program for two main reasons: It presented audiences with the first Afro-Brazilian as the traditional hero of a prime time telenovela, and it openly addressed contemporary race matters through graphic and shocking politically incorrect plot and dialogue. Additionally, author Aguinaldo Silva kept a blog where he discussed the telenovela, the public’s reactions to the storylines, the media discussions pertaining to the characters and plots, and therefore directly engaged with fans and critics of the program.

So, around the time that a black politician was taking center stage in the U.S. a fictional one was also running for office in Brazil. And while some may assume that the fictional world of TV does not compare to the reality of everyday life, the imagined world of the television screen can create real change.

The fictional story contributed to the public discussions of race, racism, and affirmative action policies, such as the quotas in Brazilian media, law, politics, and society at large.

Duas Caras viewers made more than 700 comments for each post in Silva’s blog. The program was also the subject of talk shows and articles. The telanovela proved it had the capacity to intervene in history, to help construct it.

In my book I uncover the ways in which race and race relations were negotiated in the telenovela as well as in Brazil at large during the time of the broadcast.

Additionally, it illustrates how different factors such as narrative, audience reaction, as well as media criticism and commentary played a dynamic role in creating a metadiscourse about race in the broader mass media and in Brazilian society. I also examine how the social discourses about contemporary race relations and racism in Brazil were circulated, constructed and reconstructed during the time the program aired.

Duas Caras was a component of a contemporary progressive social movement in Brazil, debunking the ideology of racial democracy in Brazil once and for all.

Welcomes Speakers to Campus

By Samantha Joyce and Tami Martinez Intercultural communication and media pranks were the focus of the 2011-12 IUSB Forums. In October, Gottfried Oosterwal, director of the Center for Intercultural Relations in Berrien Springs, Mich., presented “You Just Don’t Understand: Communicating with People from Diverse Cultures.” In March, Kembrew McLeod, associate professor of communication studies at the University of Iowa, presented “The New Market Affair: On Media, Pranks, and Pedagogy.”

Oosterwal charted the increasing multiculturalism in today’s society. He discussed its effects on professional relationships, outlining the increased possibilities for misunderstanding and miscommunication. Through rich, real-world examples and historical case studies, Oosterwal stressed the importance of having cultural communication competence in the fields of education, medicine, business, and politics. A master storyteller, he related several of 16

his own experiences with intercultural communication.

Oosterwal stressed that communication is more effective when people attempt to understand one another’s differences and make accommodation for those differences in their own communication. According to Oosterwal, knowing one’s own cultural code and recognizing the different cultural codes of others is important and necessary in our globalizing world.

Oosterwal is originally from the Netherlands. He has lived in the United States for many years and travels worldwide speaking on intercultural communication.

He is a consultant to hospitals, medical schools, medical and nursing organizations, international business groups, and governmental organizations.

In his lecture on media pranks, McLeod presented an in-depth discussion on the pedagogical and political potential of pranks and

discussed his own involvement with media hoaxes. Some of his pranks included selling his soul in a glass jar on EBay, and trademarking the phrase “Freedom of Expression” and then threatening AT&T with a cease-anddesist letter for copyright infringement for using it in a campaign slogan.

In addition to teaching, McLeod is a documentary film maker, author, cultural critic, and self-professed prankster. McLeod co-produced the documentary Copyright Criminals, which aired on PBS’s Emmy Awardwinning documentary series, Independent Lens. McLeod’s book, Freedom of Expression®: Resistance and Repression in the Age of Intellectual Property, received the American Library Association’s Oboler book award for “best scholarship in the area of intellectual freedom” in 2006.

Dance Company Formed

By Carolynn Hine-Johnson // Photography Dean Cates The newly formed IU South Bend Dance Company hit the ground running, or should I say dancing, soon after auditions in January. The 23 men and women selected began rehearsals twice a week. The rehearsals were intense, especially after accepting an invitation to perform for downtown South Bend’s First Friday on March 2.

At First Friday, the troope performed three dances. The first piece was a hip-hop and ballet fusion choreographed by senior Stephanie Phillips. In the second dance five men performed “The Hawks,” a contemporary dance I choreographed based upon a Native American story.

“I came from a background in jazz and tap dance so being a hawk challenged me to dance differently,” says company member Marlon Burnley.

The third piece featured a hip-hop dance choreographed by theatre major Victor Kamwendo for the entire company. He broke down the steps and taught it to the audience as well.

Gospel Choir Director CreAnne Mwale invited company dancer and student Sardius Giden to perform a solo ballet dance at the choir’s spring concert “All Praise to Music.”

Rehearsals continued throughout the summer as the dancers prepared for signature summer events, Friday at the Fountain and Art Beat.

“It was exciting to be a part of forming the company. As a freshman, it gave me the opportunity to meet other dancers since I live in LaPorte,” says student Krystyn Smith.

New works are underway for a busy year ahead. Flamenco and modern dance instructor Vladimir Sorokin and I will collaborate on dances from the Bizet/Shchedrin version of the “Carmen” ballet. Students Alyssa Mathieu, Chelsea Johnson, and Jessica Izak choreographed a contemporary dance they are currently teaching to the other company members. Finally, “The Hawks” will expand into a longer piece that will include female dancers.

This fall the company will perform for Studies in Dance, a lecture demonstration; Speech Night, and the annual Teddy Bear Concert. The dance company will also perform selections from Swan Lake with the IUSB Philharmonic.

In addition to a spring performace by students and faculty, Dean Marvin Curtis has invited the dance company to perform Carmina Burana in April 2013 with the Symphonic Choir.

Auditions will be held again in the early fall semester. They are open to any IU South Bend student or alumni who have five years of dance training in ballet, modern, or jazz.

Toradze Pianist

WINS GOLD

By Naomi Keeler // Photography Michele Morgan-Dufour Toradze Studio pianist Nikita Abrosimov was awarded the gold medal in the Artist Division at the 55th World Piano Competition in Cincinnati, Ohio. Held annually for over 50 years, the World Piano Competition attracts aspiring musicians from all over the world to compete for prize money and worldwide performance opportunities. Pianists undergo a rigorous series of auditions in pursuit of the gold medal. Included in Nikita’s prize package are $10,000 in prize money and a debut recital in New York at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in spring of 2013.

No stranger to music or competition, 21-year-old Abrosimov has played the piano since six years of age and won four other international piano competitions: Kiev, Ukraine (2000); Paris, France (2002); Cortemilia, Italy (2003), and Nizhny Novgorod, Russia (2004). So what is special

about this particular competition? “On the one hand, this competition was an important moment in my professional life,” says Abrosimov. “It was the result of a long and hard work with Professor Toradze and with my Russian teacher Natalia Fish. On the other hand, if we speak about lifelong career, winning or losing a competition does not mean much. So I need to keep working.”

For this dedicated Russian pianist, studying with Martin Endowed Professor in Piano Alexander Toradze and Lecturer in Piano Ketevan Badridze as part of the Toradze Piano Studio “has affected the way I practice; therefore it affects the way I play … most of the work I have to do by myself, meaning that I have to find my own way of performing music.”

MC: When you stood on the stage that night, what went through your mind?

NA: The finals were the easiest for me. At that point, I understood that at the least I would get the bronze medal. I didn’t think about which medal, I just enjoyed the moment.

MC: You just won the World Piano Competition. How does that make you feel?

NA: It makes me feel good. I feel I have grown artistically. I was satisfied with my performances, not just the result of the competition.

MC: Where are you going from here?

NA: Of course, I have a couple of competitions in mind. I hope I will have some performances, but I can’t say for sure.

MC: How did you prepare?

NA: The year before the competition, I practiced six to seven hours a day. One of the most difficult things to do was to forget I was preparing for a competition, yet play in a way that would convince the judges of my talent.

MC: How did you get started in piano?

MC: When did you get married?

NA: My parents wanted me to go to music school when I was six years old. My father wanted me to have a musical background, so he pushed me. I didn’t really want to practice, I wanted to play soccer and hang out with my friends. At the age of 11, I met the distinguished piano teacher Natalie Fish. She invited me to study with her in 1999.

MC: When did you come to America?

NA: I came in 2007 after graduating from Nizhny Novogorod Music College. I went to Bowling Green State University and studied with Maxim Mogilevsky, a student of Lexo [Alexander Toradze], and Virginia Marks. After one year, I transferred to IU South Bend when Lexo extended an invitation to study with him.

MC: You are 23 years old, what have you learned so far?

NA: First of all, I learned that it’s important for every person to always remember his or her roots. Second, be honest with yourself; figure out what you want. Be respectful to those

NA: I married my wife Ekaterina in 2008. My wife is a great support for me emotionally. She shares completely in my interests, goals, and thoughts. She left her job in Russia in 2010, even though she had so many things going on, she left everything.

That is why I won the competition, it was for her!

MC: Who was your greatest influence?

NA: It is not one person, it a combination of all of them. Natalie Fish led me until I finished college. Then I had a chance to work and study with Lexo Toradze, a concertizing pianist of international level. I am very grateful to them and I am very lucky to know them. I also try to learn from pianists, conductors, and singers who have died; as well as people I meet in everyday life.

I have four parents; my own as well as my wife’s parents, who take care of me as if I was their own son. In addition to my wife, these are the people who are most important to me.

Professional lives and people are so connected, I can’t tell where one stops and the other one starts.

MC: Any advice to future pianists?

NA: Another difficult question – Love what you do!

By Naomi Keeler // Photography Ethan Kampa For the first time, IU South Bend has incorporated an overseas study program for music majors. Developed by Associate Professor of Music Jorge Muñiz, the program gives music majors the chance to perform and study music in Northern Spain. Students broaden their perspectives in musical training using the European tradition.

This new program is a partnership between Indiana University and Conservatorio Superior de Música de Asturias (CONSUMPAS).

The northern coastline of Spain is ideal place for music students to experience Spanish culture. The area hosts an international piano festival, a dance festival, a jazz festival, an opera festival and many theatre companies.

Additionally, two professional symphony orchestras with perform throughout the year.

Composition major Ethan Kampa was the first student to take this adventure. This was his first overseas travel experience.

Kampa recommends all students travel overseas. “It is a chance to get away and focus [on being a musician], released from the constraints of general education requirements.”

One of the biggest differences Kampa noticed was the contrasting teaching styles. At CONSUMPAS, the average class size is 2 to 15 students. The class will sit around a table completing assignments, while the professor makes his rounds to give individual time with each student.

Kampa notes that, “… questions are resolved immediately and learning becomes a more interactive process. It’s a phenomenal learning environment.”

The pace of Spain is a bit slower and more easy-going.

Shops close from two to four in the afternoon for siesta and a meal. The change in pace and perception of time refreshed him, making it easier to focus on music. “In Spain, I was able to make music a priority. I found that I enjoy being in my own space with adequate time and energy to self-reflect,” says Kampa.

The most valuable lesson Kampa brings home with him is to live life unafraid. “I have always had wanderlust but it was slightly bridled by a fear of the unknown. Here, I would wander the city alone, absorbing the sensory stimuli and loving every minute of it.”

Yuri Obata:

lecturer, violinist, and pop culture connoisseur

Assistant Professor of Communication Arts Yuri Obata grew up as an aspiring musician in Matsue, a small city of the west coast of Japan. After earning her undergraduate degree in music in Kyoto, she traveled to the United States to attend the University of Michigan where she earned a master’s degree in violin performance. Her studies complete, Obata returned to her hometown to teach music at the local high school.

So how did she become a professor of communications at IU South Bend?

“I wasn’t a good player at all,” says Obata. “Music is very competitive.”

Her interest in studying communication began back in Michigan while interning for a public radio station. She decided to move back to the United States, where she studied television and radio in the master’s program at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

“Two years in a master’s program could get me a decent job, but I wanted to know more about mass media,” she says, so she studied for her Ph.D. at the University of Colorado in Boulder, where she focused on media studies with a concentration on freedom of speech.

“My parents thought that once I returned from Michigan to be a violin teacher in Japan, I was supposed to settle down, get married and have kids, sort of the expected path for most of Japanese women,” Obata says. “Becoming a professor of communications was not planned. I finished Ph.D., and I looked for a job. I did not mind returning to Japan, but IU South Bend was looking for a person who could teach media theories, media law, and international media. We were a good match, and I like the Midwest region.”

Many of Obata’s courses examine popular culture and its relationship with communication. Some of her favorite pop culture icons and phenomena include viral cat videos, the British band Duran Duran, novelist Agatha Christie, and BBC’s production of Sherlock Holmes.

She is also drawn to the controversial media figure Rupert Murdoch.

“I find he is an icon because of the power, influence, and fame he has in the global pop culture world. From an academic stand point, I find him a very interesting and important figure, and we talk about him and his company News International in my senior seminar class.”

In addition to teaching, Obata is the internship coordinator for communication studies at IU South Bend, a program she hopes to expand. Many local agencies have been eager to get involved, including WNIT, Potawatomi Zoo, Ugly Dog Media, Habitat for Humanity, and a variety of departments on the IU South Bend campus.

Despite the cultural differences Obata faced when first coming to the United States, her experiences have broadened her understanding of human communication.

“It is hard to conceptualize, but I live in both cultures,” Obata says. “I may experience both sides positively, or sometimes I may feel like an outsider in the both cultures.

Fundamentally we are all humans, and I think that we often emphasize the differences between cultures too much, and underestimate the similarities that are shared by all of us in the world.”

Arts Codec

explores

digital media Arts Codec is a campus association of new media student artists, focused on digital and electronic media, with the goals of promoting creative exploration and providing venues for exhibition of artwork.

During the club’s dynamic first semester, 25 members hosted open screenings, created Artist Transmissions, and staged a flash exhibition.

The club was founded by students Sky Santiago and Mark Sniadecki in early 2012, with Assistant Professor of New Media Eric Souther acting as the group’s advisor and sponsor. Its roots, however, began in the summer of 2011, when Souther first arrived on campus.

“I saw the need for a community with a greater focus on digital media,” said Souther, whose own experience includes interactive art installations and experimental video.

Souther began to host open screening events where new media students, faculty, and staff could bring their work for exhibition and critique. When he suggested to Santiago that a student organization might be formed, she leapt into action, quickly generating a blog, artscodec.blogspot.com, and laying down the core ethos for the group.

“I am proud to be one of the first founding members of Arts Codec, and have been excited to see it foster growth and appreciation for electronic and experimental arts in our community,” said Santiago. “To work with Eric Souther has been a great opportunity for me personally as a student, and professionally as an artist.”

Sniadecki, another of Souther’s students, joined soon afterward, designing the club logo and taking on an

organizational role. He also created an online forum to facilitate communication among members.

Arts Codec is the official host of the open screenings on campus. The club has had a series of evening viewings, called Artist Transmissions, which expose students to the work of innovative video artists such as Jan Švankmajer and Stan Brakhage. In association with Arts Codec, Souther also provided a workshop on circuit-bending, a method that involves reconfiguring sound-making devices to produce novel—and often unexpected—new sounds.

Perhaps the most important moment for the club thus far, however, was the “#Occupy the Outlets” show on April 2. For the first time, Arts Codec installed the work of its members in a public space—the front hallway of Northside Hall. The work of 11 members was featured over the course of the four-hour show. Simultaneously, two massive procedural drawings, an homage to artist Sol LeWitt, were generated using sidewalk chalk in the Northside courtyard.

With the success of the “#Occupy” show, Arts Codec is poised to expand in the fall 2012 semester, with more installations and a push for greater membership and involvement.

The costumes that sweep across the stage in every theatre performance begin as little more than wisps of inspiration. The final product blooms from the costume designer’s vision, a whirlwind of sketches and fabric samples.

At the IU South Bend theatre costume shop Visiting Lecturer in Costume Design Sallie Hanson, Visiting Lecturer in Theatre Aimee Cole, and their team of theatre majors work to create costumes for four productions each year.

The budget of the show, time available, and skills needed to create

a costume, determines where it comes from. Costumes are pulled from existing stock, rented, purchased, or built. The costume designer’s challenge is combining costumes from different sources to create a cohesive look for the production.

The 2012 spring musical, H.M.S. Pinafore, is a fine example of using multiple costume sources. More than 50 performers were cast in the production.

The process begins when the actors are cast and their measurements are taken. Costumes are pulled from our

collection, rented, or purchased, then are fit to the actors, and alterations are made.

With a large cast and only five weeks to prepare, most of the women’s bustle period dresses were rented, and the chorus costumes were purchased. The costume shop constructed three bustled dresses, the women’s hats, the men’s sailor shirts, and one military uniform.

The remaining costumes were pulled from existing stock.

Creating costumes from scratch is a lengthier process. First, a pattern is created using the detailed measurements of the actor. Patterns can be created by

modifying a commercial pattern, draping fabric onto a dress form that most closely matches the size of the actor, or by flat patterning.

The costume technician must work closely with the designer through every step of this process in order to maintain the designer’s vision. Some costumes begin with a mock-up constructed of inexpensive muslin. This allows the pattern maker to achieve the desired fit of the garment and make changes before the more expensive final fabric is cut.

The designer determines the finishing touches for the garments — button selection, trims and accessories.

Costume shop staff duties vary by show and skill level. The assignments range from stitching the costumes to assisting the pattern maker with fabric preparation and pattern. Those ready for the challenge are assigned as pattern makers or cutter/drapers.

Costume shop employees also work in millinery, crafts, painting, and dyeing.

In addition to the employed staff, each semester students are required to complete 20 hours of production work as part of their course work.

The most intense part of the process occurs just days before opening night at dress rehearsals. As the costumes

and set come together, the actors rehearse their costume changes and adjustments are made. The costume staff is involved with the production through the final performance and strike. Costumes are pressed and inventoried daily, and repairs and laundry are completed as needed.

After the final performance, costumes are cleaned and returned to stock or shipped back to the rental house.

Then, a few days of downtime arrive — just enough to tidy the costume shop, sweep the floors, and prepare for the next show.

Lift every voice

The Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts and the South Bend Symphonic Choir celebrated Black History Month with the fourth annual “Lift Every Voice: Celebrating the African American Spirit” concert. The two-day event featured a symposium and concert comprised of predominately African American performances, arrangements, and compositions.

“Tonight we come to celebrate music, talent, and strength,” said Dean and South Bend Symphonic Choir Director Marvin Curtis in his introduction before the concert.

The symposium focused on the works of African American composers and was led by the internationally recognized William Chapman Nyaho, the author of the five volume compilation Piano Music of Africa and the African Diaspora. Nyaho also demonstrated his piano expertise at the concert, performing pieces from Nigerian composer Fred Onovwerosuoke.

“One of my passions is to help expand the canon of music,” says Nyaho.

The concert featured each artist performing one selection by a European composer and two by African American composers. Genres included anthems, spirituals, and gospels.The performers explained the background of each piece, providing a history lesson in the diversity of music.

Guest and mezzo-soprano Paulette G. Curtis received her Ph.D. in anthropology from Harvard University, where she developed an interest in music. She has performed in Opera Notre Dame, at the Snite Museum, and is the assistant dean in the College of Arts and Letters at Notre Dame.

Tenor Cornelius Johnson has a reputation as an international recitalist. Johnson has sung with the Chamber Opera Chicago and the Chicago Cultural Center Summer Opera.

He is founding board member and music director for South Shore Opera Company of Chicago.

The three brothers of the Moore String Trio; Jamison, Jeshua, and Johann; played pieces from composers Mozart and Giammario. They are residents of Berrien Springs and members of the Berrien Springs Community Youth Orchestra.The young musicians, ages 15, 13, and 11 respectively, have performed at Andrews University, on the island of St. Maarten, and were part of the Drake Academy sponsored by the South Bend Symphony Orchestra.

A combined choir of the IU South Bend Gospel Choir and the South Bend Symphonic Choir were the last to perform, with Curtis conducting their performances.

Life after college

As my final classes were coming to an end in 2011, I got an unexpected opportunity to apply for a job with the Troyer Group thanks to a recommendation from Senior Lecturer in Communication Arts Alec Hosterman. Just 10 minutes after the initial phone interview, they asked me to come in for an interview. Two anxious weeks later, I was offered a position as marketing coordinator.

I experienced the “college blues” during my first month on the job. In college, I created my own schedule, starting classes at 10 o’clock in the morning. The change in routine and adjusting to a completely new environment made me miss my college days. The blues disappeared as work got busier, and I started really enjoying my job.

College is much like how your job will be. You will have homework, research to do, and you will constantly be learning. The top three things I did at IU South Bend that helped me prepare for a job were group work, my internship, and serving as a peer mentor at the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts.

While nearly everyone dislikes group work in college, I actually enjoyed it. Some of my college groups worked better than others, and that does not end in the professional world. Your co-workers are your group and you will have to rely on them for many things.

Group work, especially in classes that involved local companies, was beneficial. In J428 Public Relations Planning and Research we developed a fundraising event for a nonprofit organization. This was an invaluable experience, because we had to interact with people outside of the classroom in order to complete the task, a common part of most jobs.

Working as the outreach services intern at the school of the arts was one of the best decisions I made during college. It helped me work on my writing, determine my strengths, and take initiative to make my ideas become a reality. Internships give you professional experience; they educate you about professional jobs; and they look great on your résumé. I am thankful for my supervisor, Director of Community Outreach Michele Morgan-Dufour. She gave me the freedom I needed and the encouragement to succeed.

My work as a peer mentor for the school of the arts also prepared me for life after graduation. Registering 20 plus students is not an easy task, especially when it is a week before classes start. Deadlines and working under pressure are things I learned from peer mentoring. Now, I deal with multiple deadlines and I work with many people on different projects. I have been complimented on how well I am able to handle these things, and I owe that partially to my work as a peer mentor.

My advice to students is to not waste your college years. Do not hold others responsible for what you get out of college.

Get as much experience before graduation as possible; compete in competitions that will help showcase your talents, and get involved in something that will challenge you. It is only then that you will see the rewards of your hard work. When applying for jobs, do not get discouraged if you do not get the first couple. Perseverance and a go-getter attitude always win.

By David Beem // Photography Ryan Stutzman Northside Hall’s rehearsal room 026 takes me back. Way back. It takes me back to the days of the South Bend Youth Symphony Orchestra (SBYSO), when I was 12, before I moved away and made a career as a professional musician. A few years ago, I brought my family back to South Bend and I was delighted to discover my hometown youth orchestra alive and thriving.

In my day, the SBYSO was comprised of gifted 7th-9th graders led by a veritable titan of a conductor, Rocco Germano. In fact, it was Germano and two other men, who first noticed the void in our community, all the way back in 1968, and filled it by creating the South Bend Youth Symphony Orchestra. Germano, a former Chicago Symphony violist, partnered with Robert Demaree, the former dean of the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts at IU South Bend, and Kenneth Geoffroy, the fine arts coordinator for the South Bend Community School Corporation.

I look back on my experience in the SBYSO and smile when remembering the rehearsal breaks and chasing friends. I remember wearing the white cotton button-down, black trousers and bow tie, and trotting along with my Kay model cello for a Sunday afternoon concert. I remember trembling in awe of Maestro Germano, and his stern, but fair discipline, his wisdom and musicianship, but most of all, his kindness and passion for education.

It’s rare to have a musician of his caliber creating, leading, and educating a group of preteens, though none of us understood it then. Most performers who land that coveted Chicago Symphony Orchestra gig keep little in reserve for educating our children, or civic contributions. Fortunately for Michiana, Rocco Germano wasn’t most performers.

In fact, as I look around, many in my generation meet the call for outreach with reluctance. As increasing numbers of musicians graduate from top conservatories, fewer jobs are there to meet them. Orchestras downsize and fold.

Competition is fierce. Time spent introducing a child to a violin or cello often seems tangential to the practice necessary to play in tune and with good rhythm, indeed, values that constitute a musician’s ability to pay the rent and eat. Yet, this is no different than in Germano’s day. Musicians have always struggled to make ends meet and advance their careers, yet Germano and his colleagues kept their eye on the ball.

The SBYSO is a jewel in our community, and a gift to cherish.

You’ll discover its value in your children’s grades, or emotional health. You’ll find its value in your children’s future. We’ve all seen the research about how these things are true, but in an era where so many arts organizations shrivel and die, aren’t you glad you live here? The SBYSO endures because you value it. It’s pushing fifty, and it’s stronger than ever.

And that is something you can be proud of.

New Media:

Next Step in Visualization

By Naomi Keeler What is new media? Essentially, it is electronic communication. Sounds simple right? Do not be fooled.

New media is more complex than it seems. It is more a way of working than a single, closely defined medium. New media encompasses a broad range of projects from interactive medical visualizations to thought provoking art.

He believes teaching problem solving skills, to learn any software and how to push the software beyond its limits are valuable for his students. Students are encouraged to explore their perceptions of the world and how we think about it, using the technology to push creativity, and using creativity to push the technology.

“I think in a lot of ways, new media is a thinking medium.” says Assistant Professor of New Media Eric Souther. “It allows for thoughts and ideas to be explored in real-time. I think [new media] is a very post-modern form that’s coming out of the collaboration between art and technology.”

After working with the software to learn intended functions, students have the knowledge to explore the creativity beyond the technology’s intended use. Noting Galileo’s discoveries with the telescope Souther explains, “He was seeing things that no one had ever seen before through his telescope. Galileo’s discoveries were not made through him using technology as it was, but his discoveries came from modifying and pushing the technology, which allowed him to observe sunspots and the moon.”

The new in new media is the artist’s use of evolving digital technologies that saturate the world we live in. According to Souther, “New media is a way in which you can create experiences and immersive environments … the great thing about new media is that it is everywhere.” Different forms of new media are seen all around us; they include interactive websites, apps, music, video, design, responsive environments, and computer graphics.

New media at IU South Bend has two concentrations: graphic design and multi-media for video and audio.

“With new media there are tool sets that our students can utilize to satisfy industry demands and also explore artistic practices for gallery aesthetics,” says Souther. “For me, the technology allowed me to see and to develop things that I was seeing in my mind, at a rate much faster and more playful than more traditional materials of art making.”

The majority of the students entering new media classes are digital natives, people born after the general implementation of digital technology and who are familiar with digital technologies. Souther feels “digital natives are ready for more complex ways of thinking about media.”

One of the most important things for students to participate in is having their work shown publicly. “The danger of working on the computer is if you don’t get it off there and in the public eye then nobody sees it,” says Souther. Students share their art online as well as in the Northside 033 Media Lounge, galleries, exhibitions, and film/video festivals.

Being active in the community and being able to show their work is essential when creating a resume. “Working in this field, being an artist or creative thinker depends heavily on being able to self-promote, and that is very difficult no matter what medium you use” acknowledges Souther.

Toradze Piano Studio debuts Russian Accents

Martin Endowed Professor of Piano Alexander Toradze and senior members of the Toradze Piano Studio recently recorded the radio documentary series Russian Accents: Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky and the Piano. Supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the documentary was premiered nationwide by WFMT Chicago, the number one American classical music station.

The eight-hour broadcast series examines the work of two famous Russian composers: Sergei

Commentary from Toradze, Chicago Symphony Orchestra Conductor Valery Gergiev, and author Joseph Horowitz guide audiences through the featured recordings. Writer and producer Horowitz has worked closely with the Toradze Piano Studio since its establishment in 1991, and wrote the Russian Accents script.

The goals of the piano series were to “highlight the Toradze Piano Studio and to explore some fresh dimensions of the two composers,” says Horowitz, “An unusual feature of these shows is that all the performances are ‘live’ and unedited;

Horowitz. “I don’t think there’s ever been anything quite like that on the radio before.”

“Lexo [Toradze] is a towering presence on the world scene; his Toradze Studio is one of the greatest teaching organizations of its kind,” says WFMT Chicago Executive Vice President Steve Robinson, who first met Toradze through Horowitz in 2009. “Horowitz is one of the greatest writers, producers and thinkers about classical music. The results have proven what a dynamic team this turned out to be.”

Rachmaninoff, distinguished representative of Romanticism in Russian classical music, and Igor Stravinsky, acknowledged as one of the most significant composers of the 20th century.

Both composers were exiled from Russia as a result of the revolution in 1917. Burdened by memories of conflict and rebellion of their homeland, the impact and repercussions of these experiences had complex consequences on their music and performance styles.

“Suffering is part of the Russian experience. It is part of my experience as a musician. Composers express what they need to through music … you don’t need to get out of your system pure happiness and joy. No, because it’s comfortable,” Toradze says. “So you need an element of discomfort, of irritation. That’s where our real difference lies – in pain.”

The marathon concert series attempts to explain a fundamental area of 20th century music, crediting the original artists’ abilities while encouraging further insight and engagement of the music.

Performing alongside Toradze were Toradze Piano Studio senior members Ketevan Badridze, lecturer in music; Sean Botkin, Vakhtang Kodanashvili, Alexander Korsantia; Edisher Savitzki, associate faculty in music; George Vatchnadze, and Genadi Zagor.

The documentary adopted the marathon style of the Toradze Piano Studio, where multiple members of the piano studio perform the complete piano works of a composer. “If all these pieces had been performed by the same pianist, or by the same two or three pianists, the shows would lose a lot of their momentum.” explains Horowitz. “Ketevan Badridze’s Rachmaninoff is a lot different from Vakhtang Kodanashvili’s … the sound, the conception. And yet they are both supreme exponents of his solo pieces.”

The recordings highlight the interplay between the composer’s music and the pianist’s interpretation. “Some novel features are Genadi Zagor improvising Stravinsky and a lecture demonstration

WFMT Chicago was a logical choice for distribution, specializing in the production and distribution of classical music concerts and documentaries around the world. The documentary was broadcast by 133 public radio stations throughout the United States, Europe and other parts of the world, and to Sirius XM Satellite Radio.

The Russian Accents series enjoyed the international connections and support of the Toradze Piano Studio. In addition to the NEA grant, funding for the Russian Accents series was provided by the Geraldine Martin Foundation, the Rachmaninoff Foundation, and the IUSB Carmichael Foundation.

H.M.S. Pinafore

The IUSB Theatre and Dance Company and the South Bend Symphonic Choir worked together to produce of H.M.S. Pinafore, or The Lass that Loved a Sailor, a comedic operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan. The production was directed by Associate Dean Randy Colborn with music direction by Dean Marvin Curtis.

For many students, this was their first opportunity to perform an operetta. This can be a challenge, especially for young actors. Actors must be able to distinguish the difference between singing and speaking, and mesh them together.

It was the first time that IU South Bend students worked with an exceptionally large cast, totaling around 70, often

with everyone onstage at once. This required focused precision from actors who needed to travel around the set, dance in limited spaces, and form onstage relationships with other characters.

Because the piece is a period show, women had to learn how to properly move around the stage in elaborate costumes and sing while wearing a corset.

IU South Bend theatre major Dorea Britton enjoyed this challenge. “It was interesting and difficult. It was interesting because the costume changes how you walk, take steps, or do the choreography. It was difficult because the corset sometimes slipped, and the boning would start to poke me.” Britton also stresses the importance of proper breathing while wearing a corset.

Mary Mills, who has been a part of the South Bend Symphonic Choir for 45 years, enjoyed the unmatchable excitement of performing on stage. “It was wonderful to be part of the cast, even though we were mostly background,” she says. “There is a thrill about the theatre that nothing can imitate. Developing a character for the part on stage, even though it wasn’t a speaking part, was fun.

For the first time since 1966, an adjudicator from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival watched the performance and reviewed the show. Students Emily Beck and Marlon Burnley were chosen to compete in the 2013 College Theatre Festival acting competition.

Senior theatre major Kyle Techentin was declared eligible to enter his lighting design into the student design competition and will be competing next year. There is a great deal of preparation required for the competition, but the rewards benefit both the students and the school.

“This is important for IU South Bend because it has been many years since we have had students competing on the collegiate level and representing IU as a whole,” he says. H.M.S. Pinafore was also part of the summer theatre program at Elkhart’s newly renovated Lerner Theatre.

On Friday, Nov. 18, the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts recognized emeritus IUSB Arts Foundation board members Carmi Murphy and Ernestine M. Raclin for their tireless commitment and generous support of the school.

The recognition was held at a Toradze Piano Studio concert featuring Martin Endowed Professor in Piano Alexander Toradze, with a backstage reception following the performance.

Carmi Murphy is the founder of both the IUSB Music Foundation and the broader IUSB Arts Foundation. In the early 1980s, Murphy was introduced to Dean Robert W. Demaree Jr. who informed her of drastic budget cuts facing the music department at IU South Bend.

Murphy sprang into action to assist the music program, 40

Teddy bears: assembling six arts advocates from the community. Thus, the IUSB Music Foundation was created. Through Murphy’s leadership, the IUSB Music Foundation developed and presented the annual Sounds of Music festival. This one-evening fundraiser featured multiple appearances by every IU South Bend related music effort in the community—from the IUSB Philharmonic to the South Bend Symphonic Choir, the South Bend Youth Symphony, the Michiana Opera Guild, and, for many years, the Fischoff Competition.

When the arts programs merged together in 1990, Murphy expanded the IUSB Music Foundation to become the IUSB Arts Foundation.

Theatre, visual arts, dance, and communication studies faculty and students were eager to take part in the annual festival, which became the IUSB Showcase of the Arts. Over the years, Murphy served as chair of various events committees, and as president and vice president of the foundation. She is responsible for countless gifts to the school through her support, time, and advocacy.

Ernestine M. Raclin began her long-time support of the school through the annual Sounds of Music and IUSB Showcase of the Arts festivals. She later joined and presided over the IUSB Arts Foundation, and was the principal fundraiser for the initial week-long Toradze Concerto Festival in 1998. Through her support and with that of others, the school went on to present the festival three more times over the following decade. She also served as host of the 2002 Showcase of the Arts Patron Party at her home.

In 2002 Raclin gave the school an endowment to be used at the discretion of the dean. The gift has allowed for faculty development, program expansion, student development including travel to overseas programs, capital improvements, and public relations. In appreciation of the endowment, the school was named in her honor and became the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts.

To celebrate Murphy and Raclin’s tireless years of service, support, and contributions, the Toradze Piano Studio presented a concert featuring as many studio members as the stage could handle. Studio members, alumni, faculty, and Toradze himself played classical works

by Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, and Prokofiev.

Following the concert, a committee from the board worked quickly to transform the working stage into a cocktail reception hosted by the IUSB Arts Foundation, providing delectable refreshments and beautiful centerpieces. The event honored and celebrated the emeritus board members and their efforts to transform and uphold IU South Bend as a cultural beacon and haven for learning in the community.

Foundation board members Pam Beam, Judy Ferrara, Leslie Gitlin, Chris Kelly, Valeri Sabo, and Stephanie Schurz worked tirelessly to present the reception.

Something to Hold Onto The South Bend Symphonic Choir presented its annual “Teddy Bear Concert” in December, dedicated to the late Peggy Soderburg. For the third year, teddy bears were collected in lieu of purchasing a concert ticket.

The Center for the Homeless received the cuddly bears. Dean Marvin Curtis chose the center because “the bears last all year. From the smallest child to the largest adult, Center for the Homeless clients will have something to hold onto.” For those at the center, the teddy bears give comfort to those in transition. The choir collected 500 teddy bears at the concert.

Accompanying the South Bend Symphonic Choir on stage were the IU South Bend Chorale, Chamber Choir and Gospel Choir.

The Michiana Male Chorus, conducted

by Bill Soderberg, performed the “Twelve Days of Christmas” along with 78 IU South Bend student dancers in costume, the IUSB Philharmonic, and IU South Bend Wind Ensemble. Composition major Katherine Price premiered her oratorio “The Christmas Reel-III Nativity” at the annual holiday concert. Price began composing the oratorio in high school, with each movement devoted to a Christmas carol.

Curtis shared his favorite part about hosting this annual holiday event. “Being a dean is not just about sitting behind a desk pushing papers around. What I enjoy the most is the opportunity to be accessible to my students and share the experience of what it means to be an artist. Their high energy is inspiring!”

Prior to the concert, a reception open exclusively to alumni was held in the East Lounge of Northside Hall.

Governor’s Under the Canopy of the

Arts Awards

In April IU South Bend hosted the prestigious Governor’s Arts Awards, a biennial event presented by the Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) that recognizes Indiana’s brightest stars in the areas of artistic achievement, philanthropy, arts education and leadership. Two of the six awards presented by Gov. Mitch Daniels went to influential South Bend figures.

The evening began in the Student Activities Center, which was masterfully transformed into an elegant dining hall, with a parachute placed above the gymnasium floor to create a tent.

Alexander Toradze received the award for his outstanding achievements as IU South Bend’s Martin Endowed Professor of Piano. The world-renowned graduate of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Moscow founded IU South Bend’s esteemed Toradze Piano Studio, which showcases some of the world’s most talented students.

The formal awards ceremony took place in the Northside Hall Campus Auditorium, with each award recipient introduced with a video vignette highlighting their contributions to the arts. Performances were given by the Euclid Quartet, harpists from IU Bloomington’s Jacobs School of Music, the Mario Community School for the Arts, and Alexander Toradze Jr., an IU Bloomington student and son of recipient Alexander Toradze.

South Bend philanthropist June H. Edwards was recognized for her significant contributions to the arts, including her service as vice president of the IUSB Arts Foundation, making the largest donation in history to the South Bend Museum of Art, and establishing the South Bend Symphony Chamber Music series.

More than 300 attendees from around the state dined as live music was provided by the IUSB Jazz Ensemble.

“I think the event changed a lot of people’s perceptions about IU South Bend,” says Dean Marvin Curtis. “They didn’t know where they were that night. They knew it was a gym when they got there, but when they saw the students in costumes leading them down the steps, it was really intriguing. It just made everything seem magical that night.”

Also receiving awards were actor and arts educator Mark Fauser of Marion, harpist Susann McDonald and soprano Sylvia McNair of the IU Bloomington Jacobs School of Music, and the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

Twins, Triplets, & Art

– Oh My!

The atmosphere was fun, friendly, and messy as artists created their masterpieces. While this is an ordinary circumstance in the Fine Arts Building of IU South Bend, the 35 artists creating these works are extraordinary, living proof that miracles are possible.

The artists, ranging in age from 18 months to young adults, and their families are all strangers who have found comfort, hope, and support from one common source—the March of Dimes. The families in attendance have experienced premature births, birth defects, or severe childhood illness.

They share a common belief that the March of Dimes was important to their children’s survival.

“Without the March of Dimes, premature infants would not be able to survive,” says Tonya Rush, whose daughter spent time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). “Their research and fundraising to create the NICU in hospitals, to prevent premature pregnancies, and explore treatment alternatives is the reason many premature babies have a fighting chance to survive. Without them, our children wouldn’t be a part of our lives.”

Director of Community Outreach Michele Morgan-Dufour and visual arts students Katie Carrico and Tabetha CoburnMcDonald organized the afternoon art session for March of Dimes clients to create artwork that would be sold at the organization’s annual fundraiser. To engage the young artists, Carrico and Coburn-McDonald selected art activities involving a variety of techniques and tools. The children worked with brushes, marbles, and chalk at a series of art stations. The children enjoyed printmaking, finger-painting, marble painting, scratch art, and texture rubbings with the help of students from the IU South Bend Visual Arts Area.

The March of Dimes 16th Annual Signature Chef’s Auction featured the artwork created at IU South Bend by the

children and young adults. “The few hours that we’re here together will help us tremendously in the silent auction and raise money to go back toward March of Dimes. We are all about raising money for healthier, stronger babies, so we really thank everyone involved,” says Director for March of Dimes Denise Patterson.

“Having the children create the artwork for this auction rather than bringing in work from professional artists places sentimental value along with raising awareness for the cause,” says Carrico. “It reminds patrons why they purchased the artwork, as well as raising conversation among admirers.”

Bill Gering leaves speech legacy

Retired IU South Bend speech professor William “Bill” Gering passed away on February 8, 2012, in South Bend. Arriving on campus in 1965, Gering was IU South Bend’s first fulltime speech professor and over the next 25 years crafted many of the elements of today’s speech program, including the long-running Speech Night competitions. He and his wife also established the William L. and Lucille E. Gering Scholarship for students in communication studies.

He valued the rhetoric of public speaking origins, reflected in his belief and admiration of the classic Greek scholars, such as Cicero. Gering strongly believed in preserving and passing on the importance and value of the Greek classics to students and showing how they are still relevant to today’s world. Wanting students to experience Greek theatre “as a Greek,” he invited his friend Peter Arnott, who made Greek marionettes, to present classic Greek plays to students in Recital Hall.

Adjunct instructor Craig Hosterman, who worked with Gering in the late 1970s, recalls “He was born to be a teacher but reached out to his students beyond the role of educator.

and students. He encouraged people to learn about listening, which pushed the envelope in our field at the time.

His approach to public speaking was to touch the situation the way the masters would.”

Among Gering’s many achievements was the creation of Speech Night, a traditional event at IU South Bend.

April marked the 30th anniversary for the long-time public speaking event.

Considered the hallmark of the required public speaking course, students nominate speakers from each class section to compete in a persuasive speaking contest held in Recital Hall.

“Taking the essence of the speech from the classroom to a 250-seat auditorium gave students a public speaking experience they likely had not had before,” says Senior Lecturer in Communication Arts Kevin Gillen.

In 1995, Gering and his wife Lucille established the William M. and Lucille R. Gering Scholarship. The scholarship was created to continue Gering’s legacy as an educator, which emphasized classroom learning and academic extracurricular activities. Their wish was to provide students with the opportunity to have speech as a basic subject, while also furthering the university’s mission, and encouraging others to donate to Indiana University.

Gering’s education began in a oneroom country school in South Dakota.

He earned a B.A. from Bethel College in North Newton, Kan. and a Ph.D. in Speech Communication from Indiana University. He was a member of the Speech Association of America, the American Association of Parliamentarians, and the International Listening Association.

He retired from teaching in 1989.

He enjoyed collecting primitive and antique tools to educate and share with fourth grade students in Mishawaka public schools. Gering also found great satisfaction in restoring old furniture, reveling in discussing the furniture’s origins the most. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lucille, and their two children, daughter Caroline and son Jeffrey.

Just hearing the words speech or public speaking can cause an anxiety attack for some people. Students enrolled in the S121 Public Speaking program overcome their fears to face the challenge of Speech Night twice a year. The hallmark event of the public speaking course celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

This event turned academic tradition began in 1982, when the late Professor William “Bill” Gering took the essence of the speech out of the classroom. Gering’s goal was to provide a platform for students to compete on a broader scale to a more diverse audience. The venue moves from the classroom to Recital Hall, an experience Gering believed was important for all college students.

Semifinalists elected by classmates present their persuasive speeches to an audience of peers and family. After a grueling three days of preliminary rounds, six to eight semifinalists are chosen to present their speeches on Finals Night to a panel of guest judges. “In a world where speech communication is dominated by social media, media communication, and electronic communication — Speech Night is not that. It’s a live event in real time, no second chances” says Senior Lecturer in Communication Arts Kevin Gillen.

The university echoes the importance Gering placed on rhetoric by requiring all IU South Bend students to complete the public speaking course, S121. The class teaches students to be audience centered, frame messages effectively, and learn to criticize and critique persuasive messages. “The other half of public speaking is listening.

If there are no listeners, there is no reason to have it. You are just talking to yourself,” Gillen says.

Gillen, the director of the S121 public speaking course for the past six years, passed the leadership position to Lecturer in Communication Arts Tami Martinez in January 2012.

Public speaking professors advise students to be audience centered in order to frame their message more effectively.

“Our job as educators and facilitators of learning is to guide students to think critically about their topics,” says Martinez, “bringing fresh, new information to topics that we have all heard and are aware of, but in a new light.”

Controversial topics have always been a source of discussion for the public speaking faculty. In the end, the consensus is “in a country that values and upholds freedom of speech, we really don’t feel it is right to say to students what they can and cannot speak about. How can we do that and uphold free speech?” says Martinez.

Special guest speeches are featured as entertainment in between persuasive speech performances. One of Senior Lecturer in Communication Arts Rachael Sylvester’s favorite guest speeches was a eulogy to a student’s car. “He came in with a suit, tie, and urn … he was so serious. He created a somber mood, taking character, and maintained that composure and mood throughout the entire speech. The audience roared with laughter as it went on,” Sylvester recalls, “At the end, he asked the audience, ‘Have you hugged your car today?’ and took the urn and placed his keys in there.” Sylvester feels these performances bring a unique aspect to Speech Night because they are entertaining, fun, and relaxed. Most importantly, they showcase the students’ creativity with public speaking.

New to Speech Night this year was the incorporation of social media to promote the event. A committee created by a group of seniors from Lecturer in Communications Kim McInerney’s public relations course created Facebook and Twitter profiles. The Facebook page featured a “People’s Choice Award.” The speaker with the most Facebook “likes” was presented an award at the finals round. Those unable to attend the event could watch and listen to speeches online and voice their opinions about who was best.

The 30th anniversary event featured judges who are former faculty in the S121 program; they are Julie Allee, Craig Hosterman, and Gwen McLean.

In 2011 the Raclin School of the Arts began an initiative to join a select group of colleges and conservatories that have become “All-Steinway Schools,” including the Oberlin Conservatory, Cleveland Institute of Music, and Yale School of Music.

Dean Marvin Curtis worked to create an innovative partnership between the Meridian Music Company of Carmel, Ind. and the prestigious piano builder Steinway & Sons that enabled the school to immediately upgrade the quality and size of their piano inventory while allowing

the school to select and purchase instruments from the Steinway family of pianos over the next five years.

“As is the case with many institutions, the pianos used in performance spaces, faculty studios, and practice rooms had deteriorated through years of overuse and limited budget allocations for maintenance and repair,” says Curtis. “The condition of our pianos had made it difficult for our faculty to recruit highly sought students, and for existing students to perform at the highest level possible.”

In October 2011, 14 Steinway and Boston grand and upright pianos were delivered to Northside Hall at IU South Bend.

“I had practiced so much on the bad pianos trying to make a good sound that by the time I played a normal piano I had to completely change my touch again,” says Leah Dominy, an undergraduate music student and member of the Toradze piano studio. “Now if I’m struggling with something, I can tell that it’s me and not the piano.”

The new pianos have also given students an opportunity to improve their performance techniques. “These pianos make a huge difference for the students,” says Ketevan Badridze, lecturer in piano. “Before, they couldn’t work on their sound and were only able to move their fingers.

Now they can work on tone colors and musicality.”

Each year, IU South Bend will purchase two new Steinway pianos. Two new grand pianos that will be housed in the remodeled Recital Hall and the new Education and Arts Building have already been purchased. Pianos will be housed on campus during the academic school year and spend summers at prestigious music festivals.

Johnny Appleseed Entertains

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” explained Johnny Appleseed to his friend Joshua Pierce as the dastardly Doctor Feelgood began to spin his web of manipulation and deceit. Johnny was right, his message of love and health conquered Feelgood’s unnatural machinations and spread joy to more than 7,000 elementary school audience members.

new degree moves forward Children laughed and cheered as the American folklore legend paraded around the stage, making new friends at every turn, and throwing an occasional wink to the audience.

Johnny Appleseed was the 49th annual children’s show presented by the IUSB Theatre and Dance Company. The children’s theatre presentations offer area students and teachers classic children’s tales that fit within required curriculum, while at the same time raising scholarship funds for IU South Bend theatre and dance students. It truly is a win–win situation. The children’s theatre productions are also the first exposure to live theatre for many area children.

The productions are entirely student produced, so the academic rewards for the actors and crew are as significant as the children’s enjoyment. Participation in the children’s show is an unparalleled opportunity for aspiring actors because the exuberant children provide immediate feedback on the performance.

Johnny Appleseed incorporated classic children’s theatre fun.

Youthful audiences love to participate in the action, and Johnny did not disappoint as he frequently asked the kids whether or not he was being followed by Joshua on stage. His questions were met with cries of “He’s behind you!” and shrieks of joy as Joshua hid behind his friend.

“The children are such a great audience,” says senior Marlon Burnley. “They reward us with giggles, belly laughs, and even shouted warnings when danger lurks onstage.”

Johnny Appleseed also kept with the tradition of adding a musical number to the show. In The Hall of the Mountain King underscored the townspeople’s capture of Dr. Feelgood and the rescue of Johnny from a wicked blizzard.

Actors rehearsed for a month before opening for a two-week run of 14 performances. Angela Flowers, a freshman who played Red Wing, said, “My favorite part of the show was playing improv games before each rehearsal, particularly when we were asked to be little kids and see the world through their eyes.”

Thomas Neff, a sophomore who played Dr. Feelgood agreed adding, “Sometimes the actors got out of hand, but in a good way. It helped contribute to the childish energy needed for the show.”

In the end, the cast and crew produced a memorable and enjoyable experience for the children. The members of the IUSB Theatre and Dance Company are eagerly looking forward to celebrating next year’s 50th anniversary of the children’s theatre program with a production of The Wizard of Oz. Theatre major Jeremy Weyer directed Johnny Appleseed. He also appeared in A Raisin in the Sun as Carl Linder.

The Visual Arts Area expects to launch a new Bachelor of Art Education degree program sometime during the 2012-13 academic year. Assistant Professor of Art Education Jane Cera has spent two years writing the curriculum, which must be approved by the Indiana State Department of Education, the IU Board of Trustees and the Council on Higher Education.

All of the documents have been submitted to each decision-making body, and a final decision is expected this fall. Some of the current art majors are expected to transfer into the degree program.

Cera believes there is a genuine need for this program.

“We are at a point in the retirement cycle of area school districts where many talented art teachers will be leaving the profession in the next several years,” Cera says. Currently, any students wishing to become art educators must either go to smaller, much more expensive colleges, or leave our area to obtain this degree.

The Art Education program will be stateof-the-art. Students can expect to be immersed in a curriculum that will enable them to teach 21st century skills. There is a strong emphasis on helping K-12 students understand our visual culture. Technology, media and contemporary art are stressed, along with all of the more traditional visual art forms.

“Art education is one of the most exciting professions in the arts. We produce the visually literate citizenry, the art patrons, and artists of tomorrow. Just think about how much we all love art. Now, think about how great it is to light that fire in someone else,” Cera says. “I can’t think of a better way to be around art each and everyday and to make a positive change in the world at the same time.”

a raisin in the sun

The IU South Bend Theatre and Dance Company opened their 2011-12 season with A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. The play debuted in 1959 and was the first American play produced on Broadway to be written by an African American woman and directed by an African American man. Hansberry was 29 when she wrote the play, making her the youngest American playwright to receive the New York Drama Critics Award for Best Play.

Director Lloyd Richards went on to become the dean of the Yale School of Drama.

The IU South Bend production was directed by visiting artist Walter Allen Bennett Jr., who studied under Richards at Yale, bringing with him exclusive knowledge and training to stage the play as Richards had in 1959. Bennett holds

an MFA in playwriting from the Yale School of Drama and is known for his work for The Cosby Show and The Steve Harvey Show.

Marlon Burnley, a theatre performance major, played George Murchinson in the production. This was his first experience acting in a nearly all African American play. “I learned a lot about my culture through character research,” says Burnley.

“It’s a piece that isn’t about black and white. It’s about the American Dream, and fulfilling those dreams. Every single person left that show with something to think about.

I guarantee it.”

New media major Shaylon Wright played Bobo in the production. “I loved having the chance to work with Walter,” he says. “I feel that he has brought my acting to

a whole new level, and I was glad I had the opportunity to work with a person of his caliber.”

A Raisin in the Sun challenged IU South Bend students, who learned that it can be difficult to perform pieces that hold historical significance. Staying true to the period, Hansberry includes controversial phrases, beliefs, and racial slurs that are hard enough to hear, let alone say.

Most of the individuals working on the show did not live in the era of the play and never experienced the same racial intolerance that their grandparents, or even their parents, had to endure.

For the community, this means there is even more reason to continue performing this piece. Jeremy Weyer, a junior

theatre performance major, played the role Karl Lindner, the sole Caucasian character. “Lindner lives in a world of racism,” he says. “I do not, and it made it difficult to say a few of the lines I had to say. But in the end it gave me perspective on just how hard acting is sometimes, and it was a great lesson to learn.”

Michiana Monologues:

The original performance of the Michiana Monologues was inspired by The Vagina Monologues. This readers’ theater production brings life to the local voices of survivors, humorists, sarcastic observers, and people who may sound like your colleagues, your sisters, your neighbors... or maybe even yourself. The use of personal narratives gives our production a focused emphasis on Michiana as a community and our impact and responsibility to one another. Our focus is Michiana because when the settings of events shared in the monologues are familiar and local, the audience is more likely to connect with the experiences shared in those stories.

Personal Storytelling

“What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life? The world would break open,� wrote American poet Muriel Rukeyser.

Telling the stories of Michiana women is complicated and important. Michiana Monologues features locally written monologues recounting the personal experiences of Michiana women. It is directed and produced by local men and women. A silent auction is held each night of the performance to raise much needed funds for local organizations that help women in crisis.

I became interested in the production of the Michiana Monologues in the winter of 2009. I am particularly interested in how stories about women become the larger story about the community in which those women find themselves.

My participation is part of a long line of others from the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts staff and students.

For the 2012 production, Zorina Frey, Kris Robinson, Sabrina Lute, Taylor Marks, and Trisha Miller, and I were part of the Michiana Monologues.

Story telling is a foundation of human communication, the reason we communicate with each other at all. Parents tell children stories to educate them about the world around them. Teachers share stories with their students about people from other cultures to increase cross cultural 60

All of the stories are true; some are sad, others humorous.

Many are about finding inner peace, a few are inspiring, and some are downright sobering. They are important stories about the lives of Michiana women.

Michiana Monologues is an IU South Bend club, welcoming members from the IU South Bend campus, as well as the Michiana community. In addition to other projects during the year, the keystone campaign of Michiana Monologues is the annual stage production.

Ruby sparkles in NYC

By Sarah Duis // Photography provided When South Bend native Laury Rubin, known by her stage name as Ruby Jazayre, joined IU South Bend’s faculty in 2001, she brought with her an international reputation as a performing artist, choreographer, and instructor of Middle Eastern dance.

Much of her career has been spent under the mentorship of the late renowned instructor Ibrahim “Bobby” Farrah of New York City, a highly respected influence for Middle Eastern dancers and the founder of Arabesque Magazine, the foremost publication of Middle Eastern dance.

In 2011, Jazayre was invited to the Big Apple to perform in a fourday event hosted by members of the Ibrahim Farrah Near East Dance Group. The event, titled “Remembering Bobby,” honored Farrah’s legacy as an instructor, choreographer, and visionary through a seminar series and a performance. The events were attended by former students and fans from throughout the United States and abroad. At the Lafayette Grill Supper Club in New York City, Jazayre and nine other distinguished former students illustrated the powerful influence Farrah had on their dance styles, performing with the same live musicians who accompanied them at annual galas hosted by Farrah throughout his tenure.

Jazayre has spent much of her career traveling yearly around the country to participate in Farrah’s intensive week-long study sessions and workshops. He called her “The Queen of Beledi,” after her mastery of the rhythmic Egyptian dance style. Jazayre has taken what she learned from the dance master and made it her own, combing Farrah’s teachings with a comprehensive knowledge of cultural and historical backgrounds to create her own unique style.

Jazayre’s movements and Beledi style are admired by her peers. “Ruby Jazayre is the beledi heartbeat, earthy, sensual, and hauntingly eloquent,” says Elena Lentini, principal dancer with the Ibrahim Farrah Near East Dance Group. “She has been a treasure in the dance community for many years.” And at IU South Bend she adds a Ruby-red sparkle to the Raclin School of the Arts.

Summer Fun

Wednesday night at Arts Camp means lots of noise. The 30 high school students, the camp counselors and theater professor Randy Colborn are playing theater games. It is improvisational and a version of charades. The teens are assigned a party identity, and the host must guess who they are.

One was God. Someone else was the Invisible Man. Someone else was a magician. And a few others were complete mysteries.

Marvin Curtis, dean of the Raclin School of the Arts, said it was a good experience and there have been calls already for next year. “The kids are excited, enthusiastic and creative. We’ve already seen what we can do next year that is different.”

There are laughs and fun. Colborn asks for quiet and doesn’t get it.

Curtis said the first evening some students were hanging back a bit. By day two, they were mixing and participating.

“They are loving being here, eating the food and having a good time.”

It is a good form of mayhem.

Student Brendan Johnson likes to sing and play the piano.

The students are part of the first residential arts camp at Indiana University South Bend. The week’s worth of activities includes music, theater and dance, visual arts, communications and new media. They spend a week living in student housing, eating campus food and getting a taste of college life.

“This has been a good experience to be exposed to other kids and other music,” he said.

They have taken a photo safari, learned about music and dance and found out a bit about themselves. A Saturday performance and exhibition for their peers and parents closes the week.

Samantha Stitt, another student, is involved in communications and designing a Facebook page.

“We’ve been interviewing people and getting their opinions about the camp,” she said.

Student Keri Oursler said it has been an eye-opening experience. “I know that I want to do something in the arts.”

Mark Sniadecki is a counselor in the new media area.

“Eventually I’d like to be a professor in the field and this is giving me a first experience working with students,” he said. “I’m having a great time. Everyone is great and they are all creative.”

99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall

Ninety-Nine bottles of beer were on the walls of the Thaddeus C. Gallery in LaPorte, but not for long! Every painting was sold to separate owners before the exhibition closed. Inspired by the traditional road trip song “99 Bottles of Beer,” artist and gallery owner Thaddeus Cutler, BFA’99, took on the challenge of creating 99 to-scale oil paintings in 99 days, each depicting a different brand of bottled beer.

It was so mentally and physically exhausting that when the project was over it took me almost two months before I could even be in my studio again,” says Cutler, who continues to take commissions for requested beer bottle paintings.

The idea for the project emerged two years ago during the gallery’s 50th anniversary celebration. Cutler had a painting of a cupcake on display, and was soon bombarded with requests for more food-related works. One thing led to another, and the 99 bottles project was born.

“Embracing social media and technology is a must for today’s artist. Gone are the days of unveiling your new body of work at an art opening. The public wants to see the work the minute it is finished.”

“There is a reason why there are microbreweries in practically every city in the United States,” says Cutler, explaining the project’s wide appeal. “The brewing of beer and its connoisseurship has become an art form in itself.”

“An artist has to be very careful about how much information they give about a work of art or about themselves. The tendency is to ‘spill your guts’ to a potential client. Mystery generates desire. By revealing everything, you remove the desire.”

He began blogging about the project online. Throughout the process, he would create a post showing the finished painting and a description of the beer, a quote, video, or personal anecdote related to that particular brand.

“It had a similar effect to reading someone’s diary. People wanted to keep discovering more.”

Though every painting sold on the night of the exhibition, Cutler produced a limited edition book with a reproduction of all 99 paintings and their accompanying stories.

“The biggest challenge was being in the studio every day for three months and nine days with no breaks and no days off.

As an artist in the 21st century, Cutler realizes that he and his peers must keep up with the ever-changing demands of a cyber-savvy public.

But there is a danger.

The exhibit included common favorites, like Corona, Miller Lite, and Pabst Blue Ribbon, and more obscure craft beers, like Gonzo Imperial Porter, Abita Amber, and Four in Hand.

The only beer that was not for sale was painted open, with its cap setting next to it. The brand is called “La Fin Du Monde,” which means the “end of the world,” a fitting end for Cutler’s ambitious project.

Music Area Seeks National Accreditation

The Music Area recently received an evaluation from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), the culmination of a three-year process to achieve accreditation.

Although the organization releases its final decision in November, informal feedback from the evaluation team was positive, noting the many strengths of the Music Area.

The accreditation process involved two on-campus visits.

The first, in November 2010, was a preliminary visit from an NASM consultant who provided early feedback to the Area. The report was mainly positive, and the suggestions were specific and easily remedied through the creation of new classes and redistribution of resources.

The Music Area recognizes the importance of periodic evaluation of its work, and by seeking independent judgment, it ensures that it achieves its own education objectives and the standards set by the NASM.

The final stage of the process occurred in February 2012, when a team of two evaluators from NASM visited campus to meet with administrators, faculty, and students, observe classes, and attend a recital of student performers.

The accreditation process began with the creation of a 200page document in which the area critically examined its current policies, degree offerings, and future plans.

The Music Area and the entire Raclin School of the Arts anxiously await the NASM’s official decision this November.

If granted accreditation, IU South Bend will join the nearly 650 institutions that uphold the highest standards of music education. Regardless of NASM’s decisions, the Music Area is looking forward to its future.

“Working toward achieving membership status within the NASM has been very important to the Music Area,” says Jorge Muñiz, former area coordinator of music and main author of the document.

“A positive result in November would be very important to us, but the work that the faculty and students have done in selfreflection and improvement is perhaps even more important,” he added. “We have a stronger program today that meets the standards of music education that our current and future students expect of an institution like IU South Bend.”

“The whole accreditation process really gave us the opportunity to take a fresh look at all of our programs,” says Assistant Professor of Music Ken Douglas. “I personally gained a great deal of insight into what our next steps could be as we continue to grow. There are so many possibilities.”

Summer at the Lerner Theatre

By Naomi Keeler // Photography Peter Ringenberg A partnership with the Lerner Theatre of Elkhart granted the IU South Bend Theatre and Dance Company’s students the chance to recreate their performances from the 2011-12 seasons. Beginning in June, the company reprised their April production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comedic operetta H.M.S. Pinafore. The children’s production Johnny Appleseed, and a Christmas in July production of It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play were on stage in July. Guest director Walter Allen Bennett Jr. concluded the summer series with A Raisin in the Sun in August.

The summer series is a valuable opportunity for theatre students. “It teaches them the differences between performances in a school setting versus the professional theatre world,” says senior Greg Demetrakis. “Many have not ever done theatre outside of IU South Bend.”

Students learned to recreate a familiar production in an unfamiliar space. “Remounting a show is like waking up the beast. We are recreating the momentum of the show in a short amount of time that took us months to put together initially,” says Associate Professor of Theatre Tim Hanson.

“On the technical side, adapting to new spaces teaches students all theaters are different. Scenery displays, lighting, and sound systems may have to be altered depending on the theater.”

A touring show is a much different responsibility. “It’s a daunting task for actors and crew but placing students in real life situations prepares them for future endeavors,” says Hanson. “Learning to multi-task and adjusting to a new performance setting equips them to be more adaptable.”

Recreation of past performances required the cast to relearn roles they had not performed for months. “Performing in a historic yet state-of-the-art facility is an incredible experience,” says senior Stacie Jensen. “This was the first time we were able to take A Raisin in the Sun on the road.”

Participants of the summer theatre program earn experience and academic credit for their creative work. Hanson, who instructed the Creative Work in Summer Theatre course, says, “Students will be concentrating solely on the performances.

A less demanding academic schedule enables programs like this to happen over the summer.” The summer series developed as a collaboration between Dean Curtis and David Smith, general manager of the Lerner Theatre.

Future seasons of IU South Bend summer theatre at the Learner have been assured by a generous gift from Elkhart resident Doloris C. Cogan.

It’s A Wonderful Life Takes to the Air Waves

By Jerry Sailor // Photography Dean Cates “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the WRSA Studio production of It’s a Wonderful Life,” begins Marlon Burnley, theatre major, and narrator of America’s favorite Christmas story as told by WRSA Studios, the makeshift radio station at the center of It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play.

While the presentation of It’s a Wonderful Life as a radio play “is not totally new, we are being faithful to the original screenplay,” says director John Sterchi, by focusing on the lessons and themes conveyed through the story.

The story, which centers on George Bailey, a hardworking businessman discouraged by life’s circumstances, became a holiday classic after the original film’s release in 1946. On a snowy Christmas Eve George learns that while he did not have the life he planned, the life he lives is an important one.

The production was peppered with commercial jingles, raffles, and special hellos to those listening at home, layering life at the radio station over the holiday tale.

The star of the show was the foley artist, Ryan Stutzman, who produced all of the sound effects necessary to make the folks at home, and the studio audiences, hear, and then believe. If you can use the typewriter, slam the door, and play records all at the same time, you might be a great foley artist.

The cast and crew from the Raclin School of the Arts staged the production of the radio play in the Upstage, IU South Bend’s black box theatre, before taking it on tour.

The first stop on tour was Chicago’s Ada S. McKinley Community Services where the cast performed the play for adults with disabilities.

The next day found the production on the stage at South Bend’s Washington High School before an enthusiastic audience. The production was also broadcast as an actual radio play on local public radio station, WVPE.

B.F.A. Exhibitions

Exhibiting a collection of their work for the first time is an exhilarating and intimidating experience for burgeoning young artists. Each student preparing to finish their Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at IU South Bend must participate in an exhibition showing.

The exhibition consists of pieces the students created over their years at IU South Bend. Fourteen students worked tirelessly throughout the spring semester to prepare for their B.F.A. exhibition. “As a rule, this is the first time students see their work presented as a collection in their professional career,” says Gallery Director Randall Clark.

The artists find the exhibition experience is an incredible learning opportunity. The students who presented their work at the spring exhibitions were a mix of visual arts majors concentrating in areas of graphic design, sculpture, and photography, along with new media majors. Arranging their first major exhibition at the end of their academic careers is a monumental task for the students.

“It was an amazing experience that gave me great closure for graduation,” says photography major Ashley Briggs. For many students, seeing their work on display for an event that has taken years of hard work to get to is gratifying.

New media major Ruth Divine echoed a similar sentiment. ”The exhibition brought all my accomplishments together. I invited people to come see my work.”

Preparing for the exhibition is more than just creating or putting art on the walls for people to admire. Students learn the process required to present an exhibition. Selecting which pieces to exhibit, framing their work, hanging the exhibition, and preparing their artist statements is time

consuming and meticulous work. The semester of hard work, dedication, and planning is not exclusive to students; professors and faculty work directly with the students in preparation and planning for the exhibitions.

The faculty has been with the students every step of the way in their careers at IU South Bend and serves as mentors as the students prepare their exhibitions. Associate Professor of Fine Arts Susan Moore explains, “The B.F.A. exhibition is a culmination of four years of effort and improvement in technical skills, formal image making, and idea development. It is a rewarding experience to watch the students grow and mature artistically while studying at IU South Bend.”

Professor of Fine Arts Karen Ackoff describes the importance of the exhibition, “It is a milestone for students, and I’m always proud to see students reach this level of accomplishment and professionalism.”

For all those involved, the B.F.A. exhibition is the final event that defines the years it took to get to graduation.

“This experience really put my style and artistic ability out there for the public to see. Putting my B.F.A. work together helped me realize who I am as an artist and what I want to accomplish,” says Briggs.

The (he)art of Florence

For some students, the chance to explore a city as alluring as Florence, Italy, is a once in a lifetime experience. But at IU South Bend, students are now offered the opportunity every summer. The trip is on a rotating schedule—offering photography one summer and painting and sculpting the next.

The programs are created in conjunction with the Santa Reparata International School of Art, located in Florence.

Instead of being crammed into a typical classroom setting, the city itself becomes the classroom. More than that, Florence becomes the frame and the canvas for student creation.

However, for last year’s photography students, it did not take long before they were faced with the challenges of a foreign city.

“Asking people to take their picture in English wasn’t the greatest thing. Because a lot of them would just right away say no and walk away, or wouldn’t pay attention to you. So, I learned some Italian while I was there. Once I learned that, even if I murdered it, they at least appreciated that I was trying,” says Dean Cates, a senior in the photography program and who participated in the 2011 Florence trip.

Being in a foreign country with a completely foreign language forced students out of their cultural isolation.

They needed to adapt and see the world, themselves included, in a new light to succeed.

“I look at things a lot differently here now,” says photography student Ryan Stutzman. “When I go to shoot something, I think I look more at a personal side. I look more than just trying to get the shot and go on. I really try

and involve myself in my surroundings and I try and just really get involved in whatever I’m shooting.”

Consciously or not, the students began to see themselves reflected in their work; subtly, the city had become a part of who they were as artists and students.

The potential impact of the experience has not been lost on this year’s painting and sculpting students either.

“I’m really looking forward to the experience and the exposure of the trip. All of the things that I love in art history I’ll be able to experience in real life,” says Katherine Swiental, a junior majoring in drawing and painting who is going on the 2012 painting and sculpting trip.

The rotating schedule of the trip every summer allows students the chance to dig into the rich history and culture of the thriving city every year.

Many students have been fortunate and thankful to receive some sort of financial aid or scholarship to help pay for the trips, such as the Gabrielle Robinson Scholarship—but the high cost of overseas travel remains a significant determining factor for many.

Students who go on the trips receive six credits towards their degree, but the rewards far exceed earning college credits.

Florence will inspire them long after they return home.

Healing Haiti

one note at a time

By Naomi Keeler // Photography Dean Cates It was Macedonian-born Natasha Stojanovska’s passion for classical music and piano performance that brought her to heal young hearts broken by tragedy. In 2010, the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts graduate music student traveled to Haiti to share her musical talent with the victims of the earthquake through Friends of Music Education for Haiti (FMEH).

FMEH is a nonprofit organization created by Romel Joseph.

A Julliard-trained, nearly blind violinist, he transformed the experience of his horrific 18-hour entrapment under the rubble of his Haitian academic and music institution into the inspiration for a plan that introduces classical music to Haitian children. The FMEH’s mission is to expose underprivileged children to classical music, spread awareness of Haiti’s need for a modern performing arts center and music conservatory, and raise funds to build it.

Joseph planned benefit concerts as part of the organization’s mission, inviting the musical talents of Stojanovska. The two met in 2008 at a competition presented by Joseph’s Miamibased Walenstein Musical Organization.

“I simply admire their work for building and introducing a new musical world in Haiti, as well as their awareness efforts about FMEH throughout America,” says Stojanovska.

“He asked me to participate in his newly created organization, which was a pleasure and an honor. Not only 72

is it fun for me, but others benefit greatly from the work we are doing.”

In December 2011, Stojanovska joined FMEH in presenting their first children’s lecture concert at the Haitian American Institute Cultural Hall in Port-au-Prince. More than 200 students received an introduction to piano and strings. The children’s reaction was joyful.

Their response emphasized the importance of social and cultural outlets in communities, especially after natural disasters. The earthquake destroyed all of the movie theaters, community centers, schools, churches, and their only concert hall.

“I’m not going to let an earthquake stop me from doing my work. Yes, Haiti needs food and water, but the people need not only to survive, but to live,” says Joseph. “If no one offers Haiti a positive social and cultural outlet, what is there left to do to fill that void?”

In March, Stojanovska joined Joseph and other musicians in Florida to record the first three volumes of a Haitian/French music album for beginning violin students. “Natasha is really an amazing person and musician,” says Joseph.

Exposing underprivileged children to classical music is valuable because “it teaches us many things — selfdiscipline, the value of working together, raising our self-esteem, brain development, and so much more,” says Stojanovska, “These children need music to express themselves in ways that cannot be done with words, especially in Haiti, where they don’t have many creative outlets for self-expression.”

As the academic year begins every fall, each student of the Raclin School of the Arts sets out on a distinct and personal voyage. They experience struggles and setbacks, triumphs and victories, all in the name of personal advancement and to contribute to the field they are passionate about.

As the school year comes to a close two dates on the calendar acknowledge and honor these experiences and the students’ achievements — the Arts Excellence Awards and Commencement.

On May 3, students, faculty, and guests gathered in the new University Grill for the annual Arts Excellence Awards presentation to recognize the school of the arts’ best and brightest.

Dean Marvin Curtis opened the night by welcoming students and their families, and Executive Vice Chancellor Alfred Guillaume delivered words of praise and encouragement.

Scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year were awarded to 43 students, and more than 350 Dean’s List recipients were recognized.

Arts Excellence Awards were presented to 13 students who have demonstrated excellence through scholarship, performance, or exhibition in communication studies, music, new media, theatre and dance, and visual arts.

“I am truly honored to be recognized by the faculty who have been my mentors over the past six years,” says Joel Bazzell, Arts Excellence Award recipient. “They had faith in me when I didn’t believe in myself. I am also honored to be recognized by Dean Curtis who has been a fierce advocate for me.”

In addition to student awards, the Visual Arts Area recognized alumnus Brandon Briggs for his accomplishments as an artist and teacher. Curtis presented Dean’s Special Awards to IU South Bend staffers Carl De Bruyn, Anne McGraw, and Tiffany Goehring. Finally, Yatish Joshi accepted the Dean’s Special Award on behalf of his late wife, Louise Addicott-Joshi.

The finale of many students’ academic journeys came a week later on May 8 at Commencement. The Joyce Center at Notre Dame was packed with energetic graduates, beaming faculty, and proud families, friends, and supporters.

Associate Professor of Fine Arts Alan Larkin led the arts graduates into the ceremony where they received their diplomas. Coordinator of Student Services Tamea Rector and assistant Trisha Miller were on hand to assist arts students and faculty with their regalia.

A total of 81 students in the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts earned undergraduate or graduate degrees in 2012.

As far back as I remember theatre has been my passion. It started when I was 4 and I performed with my cousins. I knew then that this would be my life. I’ve been performing and directing professionally for more than half of my life. I’ve managed companies, directed and choreographed in Chicago, New England and Richmond, Va. I earned my M.F.A. in theatre from Virginia Commonwealth University.

My childhood in Louisiana and rural Pennsylvania was rich in art and academia. My mother is a painter and my father is an art professor. I received an M.F.A. from Tulane University in 2010. During graduate school in New Orleans, I frequented the French Quarter and enjoyed crawfish boils and Mardi Gras. I love to cook, sew, kayak, and listen to audio books and NPR. Oh yeah, and I love to paint.

I was born and raised in Michigan. I have my B.S. from Michigan State University and my M.F.A. in costume technology from Florida State University. I have worked in many professional theatres. My most interesting job was making hats for Sesame Street Live. I love to travel. I look forward to my annual trip to Disney World with my husband and two daughters. I learned to play the guitar and ran a half marathon after turning 40.

I am a soprano originally from New Brunswick, Canada.

When I am not on the concert stage or teaching, you will often find me in the kitchen. I hold degrees from the University of Toronto, Southern Methodist University, and the University of North Texas. My interests include new works, Baroque performance, women in music, and vocal health. I also enjoy traveling and sharing a good laugh. I am married to trumpeter Edward Phillips, and we reside with our two cats, Cleo and Poncho.

Geoffrey Duce // Asst. Professor of Music, Collaborative Piano As a pianist, I find each type of performance has its own challenge and joy. I love sharing the passion of music with others. I’m inspired by new environments. After growing up in Scotland, I lived in Berlin, where, apart from making music, I learned German (and enjoyed the sausage and beer), before spending the most recent period of my life in New York City.

Sean Hottois // Asst. Professor of New Media I was born into a theatre family and have lived in and around Indiana for most of my life. My artistic endeavors are my passion and I continue to enjoy my work in print and web design while developing new interactive art. As for leisure, racing and basketball often top the list of most Hoosiers. At 5-foot-7, it’s no surprise the Little 500 and the Indianapolis 500 are more my style than basketball.

Jason Lee Resler // Asst. Professor of Theatre, Costume Design and Makeup I blame The Muppets take Manhattan for inciting my career in theatre. I received my M.F.A. from the University of Minnesota and have a background as a professional costume designer and technician. I have worked as a costume shop manager and as a wardrobe supervisor. I also joined the circus where I helped costume elephants for Ringling Brothers Circus. I am a fan of musical theatre and have a fascination with liturgical clothing.

Kari Wilson // Asst. Professor of Communication Studies Teaching has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. Being in the classroom is probably the most energizing part of my day. I love that I learn as much from my students as I (hopefully) teach them. While not in the classroom, I enjoy exploring new things — restaurants, locations, recipes, or ideas. I am also a bowler and reader and love coming home to my dog Sophie.

schoolNews Choirs present “All Praise to Music”

IUSB Arts Foundation remembers board members

The IU South Bend Chorale, Chamber Choir, and Gospel Choir joined voices to presented their concert “All Praise to Music.” The concert featured a variety of styles from each ensemble individually, as well as several joint selections. Associate faculty members CreAnne Mwale conducted the gospel choir and Michael S. Wade conducted the chorale and chamber choir. Music performed ranged from Handel and Mozart to a Broadway selection, and of course, some “on your feet” gospel styling. The featured work of the evening was a performance of Howard Hanson’s “Song of Democracy.” IU South Bend Dance Company member Sardius Giden choreographed and performed a solo ballet for the concert.

This year the school of the arts lost two important friends, IUSB Arts Foundation board members Sharon McLeod and Peggy Soderberg. Their tireless service to the community will be greatly missed.

IU South Bend Debate team competes The IU South Bend Debate Team competed in the Boiler Maker Tournament at Purdue University. They are coached

by Sara Curtis, associate faculty in communication studies.

Cory Gilmartin, Luis Hernandez, Preston Tracey, and Karra Chattraw scored 11th overall out of 36 teams at the University of Indianapolis Forensic 500 debate tournament, defeating teams from Butler University, Ferris State, IUPUI, and Grove City College.

Mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves to perform Denyce Graves, one of the greatest vocalists of our time, will visit IU South Bend in November for two days of exclusive performance and instruction. On Nov. 9, she will give a solo performance in the Campus Auditorium of Northside Hall. On Nov. 10, she will hold a masterclass for specially selected IU South Bend vocal students. USA Today has called Denyce Graves “an operatic superstar of the 21st century.” Her powerful voice has been heard in the world’s finest opera houses, on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and in the White House, among other prestigious locations. Graves is particularly recognized by opera audiences for her title role performances in Carmen and Samson et Dalila. Her programs include classical repertoire of German Lieder, French mélodie, and English art song, as well as the popular music of Broadway musicals, crossover and jazz together with American spirituals. Graves’ performance at IU South Bend is supported by grants from the South Bend/Mishawaka Convention and Visitors Bureau and the African American Fund of the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County.

// Sharon McLeod For Sharon McLeod, the details were important. Whether she was making a presentation for a small dinner party, hostessing a large event, or preparing for a church anniversary dinner, nothing escaped her expert eyes. She was a master of the art of event planning, giving advice and services freely and with aplomb. Sharon was a woman of deep faith, whose life centered around her church and family. Her friendships reflected her artistic gifts — she was serious and dedicated, but always loyal to those with whom she shared it. // Peggy Soderberg Peggy’s upbeat personality and ever-present smile are greatly missed. Her positive outlook on life never wavered and her perseverance was an inspiration to everyone in her wide circle of friends. Peggy truly epitomized the Studebaker motto of “giving more than you promised” through her countless contributions to a plethora of local organizations.

“I admired many things about my dear friend, but most of all I admired her ability to talk to anybody about anything,” says her friend Becky Bonham, “her numerous, wellrounded interests, quick wit, and sharp intellect made her an absolute joy to know and work with.”

Performing were the IU South Bend Gospel Choir; Flute Ensemble; solo dancers Joel Stockton, Amorena Ruffolo, Karen Pajor, Halana Hattery; Flamenco dancers Vlad Sorokin and Carolyn Hine-Johnson; a jazz trio led by Sam Que; and members of the theatre area performing the Bollywood dance from A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Gospel Choir takes spring break tour In March 2011 the IU South Bend Gospel Choir embarked on their second annual trip to North Carolina at the invitation of Holy Trinity United Holy Church. On the way,

the choir stopped at the historic Third Baptist Church in Toledo, Ohio, to perform a variety of traditional and contemporary gospel music. The choir continued their journey to North Carolina, arriving at the Holy Trinity United Holy Church, where they performed during Sunday morning worship.

K-12. The 2011-12 event set a new record, raising over $5,200. Other performing guests included the Southold Dance Theatre, the South Bend Symphony String Quartet, and the Michiana Jazz Assemblage. The performance marked one of many off-campus performances for both the flute and guitar ensembles.

“We created memories that will not only leave a permanent impression on our lives, but the lives of others as well,” says choir member Jasmine Ray.

2012 IU South Bend Flute Festival

The IU South Bend Gospel Choir recently appeared in a film featuring the Maestro Tsung Yeh, Notre Dame Women’s Basketball head coach Muffet McGraw, Miss Indiana, South Bend Fire Fighters, and others singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” in front of the new entrance to the Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium. The film is being produced by The Big Idea Company, a local Emmy-winning media firm.

Flute/Guitar Ensemble performs for Mishawaka Lions Club Fine Arts Series The IUSB Flute and Guitar Ensembles performed at the 2011-12 Mishawaka Lions Club Fine Art Series. The series aims to bring talented local artists to the Mishawaka High School Performing Arts Center to enrich the lives of students and the local community. Profits from the series are given to the Mishawaka Education Foundation, which supports musical and visual arts programs to benefit grades

A full day of flute workshops with well-known flute instructors inspired students and teachers alike with ideas to enhance every flutist’s technique. Interactive workshop sessions by guest artist Angeleita Floyd, professor of flute at the University of Iowa, and Assistant Professor of Music and composer Jorge Muñiz got flutists out of their seats and into the music. The day ended with “Flute Extravaganza,” a closing concert featuring the festival’s Honors Flute Choir.

Exhibitors were open throughout the day offering fine flutes, music, and accessories. The festival was sponsored by Conn Selmer, Woodwind & Brasswind, and the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts. The festival was organized by IU South Bend Flute Instructor Rebecca Hovan and Director of Community Outreach Michele Morgan-Dufour.

direction of Gary Kurtis. The program featured the music of J.S. Bach, Frank Erickson, Henry Fillmore, Percy Grainger, Gustav Holst, Robert W. Smith, and John Zdechlik, among others. The concert also featured student conductors Alyssa Cabrera and David Brennan. Attendees brought nonperishable food items in lieu of purchasing a ticket to support the Broadway Christian Parish United Methodist Church Food Pantry, which aids more than 3,000 individuals per year.

Vocal students travel to Italy Tamra Garrett, Lawrence Mitchell-Matthews, and Lauren Desrosiers participated in the Ezio Pinza Council for the American Singers of Opera (EPCASO) program in Oderzo, Italy this summer. All three are students of music instructor and soprano Deborah Mayer, who is also an alumna of the EPCASO program. EPCASO is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and was started in the memory of Claudia Pinza’s father, the legendary bass, Enzi Pinza, to teach American singers Italian phrasing and provide them with a taste for the Italian culture. The program is an intense sixweek study program in the Veneto region of Italy. Students had the opportunity to study voice with Claudia Pinza, La Scale coach Enzi Ferrara, legendary Italian soprano Maria Chiara, and Italian conductor Maurizio Arena.

Pianist Michael Mizrahi’s solo recital Pianist Michael Mizrahi presented a masterclass for students and gave a solo recital feauturing works from his forthcoming album, The Bright Motion, recorded with the NOW ensemble. An avid proponent of contemporary music, Mizrahi is a founding member of NOW Ensemble, a chamber group devoted to the commissioning and performing of new music by emerging composers. Noted for his compelling performances of a wide range of repertoire and his ability to connect with audiences of all ages, Mizrahi has appeared as concerto soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and music educator across the U.S. and in Europe.

LOOK! Scholarship Art Sale celebrates sixth year Visual Arts students joined their faculty and alumni to raise scholarship funds at the sixth annual “LOOK!” Scholarship Art Sale in November. More than 500 pieces of art, created by 50 student, faculty and alumni artists, were included in the sale. The fundraiser featured prints, paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, pottery, jewelry, and mixed media works. The sale is sponsored by the Visual Arts League, Art History Club, and the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts.

“Studies in Dance: A Lecture Demonstration” The IU South Bend dance faculty and their students performed a variety of dance genres as part of a lecture demonstration. The “Studies in Dance” recital is unique

because it offers a sampling of different dance techniques and styles. Each faculty member discussed their own genre accompanied with student demonstrations. The genres performed were ballet, flamenco, Latin dance, jazz, Middle Eastern, modern dance, and social dance. The recital also featured solo and group performances choreographed by students and faculty members. Presenting faculty were Halana Hattery, Carolynn Hine-Johnson, Ruby Jazayre, Karen Pajor, Vladimir Sorokin, and David Seymour.

South Bend Symphonic Choir travels to Florida The South Bend Symphonic Choir traveled to Florida in May to participate in the 20th anniversary celebration of the Ebony Chorale of the Palm Beaches. The invitation to attend was a reciprocal gesture from Chorale Founder and Director Orville Lawton, who brought his singers to IU South Bend’s 2011 Lift Every Voice: Celebrating the African American Spirit concert at the invitation of Dean Marvin Curtis.

The Ebony Chorale is dedicated to preserving the Negro Spiritual; songs borne out of the African American slavery experience. The four-day Palm Beach event included a concert featuring two guest ensembles, a gala banquet, and the 20th anniversary gala concert, all open to the public.

“It was a very good chance for us to fellowship with another choir,” said Curtis. The South Bend Symphonic Choir performed nine pieces, with selections from composers Anton Bruckner, Rene Clausen, and Curtis himself.

The celebration marked the second major trip for the South Bend Symphonic Choir, who traveled to Washington, D.C. in 2009 to perform a concert in the Grand Foyer of the White House.

New dedicated theatre classroom Northside 013, a former lecture hall, has been partially remodeled to accommodate theatre classes and rehearsals.

Associate Professor of Theatre Tim Hanson and the scene shop crew built a basic stage in the classroom during the spring semester. Additional work on the facility is planned for the 2012-13 academic year.

Campus Auditorium gets new carpet IU South Bend installed new carpeting in Campus Auditorium in May, replacing the auditorium’s original carpet. The installation was delayed for several months to avoid interrupting the spring performance schedule.

NEWS ALUMNI NEWS ASHLEY BOWEN, BA’10, is copy editor for jewelry brand Simon G. in Malibu, Calif. She appeared as a spokesperson on an episode of Extra to speak about Hollywood celebrities’ choices of jewelry for the SAG Awards.

Darin Dahms, BA’98, directed the production Alceste at Theatre of Note in Los Angeles. The production was listed in LA Weekly as one of the top 10 theatre experiences of 2011. Darin recently finished writing a one-man play, The Player King, based on the lives of Edwin Booth, Junius Brutus Booth, and John Wilkes Booth. He rehearsed the play at IU South Bend and performed it for family and friends at the Battell Center in Mishawaka in March. He will be producing the play in Los Angeles in the coming months and intends to take it to high schools and colleges around the country. KRISTA KUSKYE, BFA’11, was accepted into a national juried exhibition for emerging artists with disabilities at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. The exhibition, entitled “Momentum: A National Juried Exhibition for Emerging Artists with Disabilities, Ages 16-25,” is the 9th exhibition in this series presented by VSA and Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. Her exhibition piece, a silver gelatin print of Union Station, Gary, Ind., was produced using the traditional darkroom process. The image is part of an ongoing series dedicated to deteriorating buildings 80

that she has been working on for the past several years. Her work was displayed along with 14 other artists from across the nation.

JESSICA L. (RYLL) OTTOW, BA’05, received her Master’s in Education from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tenn. She is licensed for K-6th grade and is teaching kindergarten in Nashville while continuing to pursue a vocal music career. She appeared in a USO Tour in California with JoDee Messina, did commercial demo work for Nashville musicians, and is the lead singer for two Nashville bands.

TERRIE PHILLIPS, BA’11, has recently been accepted to Valparaiso University’s digital communication master’s degree program.

STUDENT NEWS AMANDA BENHAM, theatre and dance, spent spring semester studying theatre in London. She served an internship with the Space, a London theatre. During her stay she traveled to Scotland, Cardiff, Paris, Dublin, and Poland. Benham recommends studying abroad for everyone.

IGNASI CAMBRA, piano performance, joined the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, Calif. during summer 2012. The highly selective program chooses only 10 pianists every year.

Through this program, he was able to study with Jerome Lowenthal, faculty member at the Juilliard School.

LEAH DOMINY, piano performance, was accepted to an international

piano festival in Gijon, Spain, where she studied with Robert McDonald from Juilliard, Marc Durand from the University of Montreal, and Jose Ramon Mendez from New York University.

SARAH DUIS, communication studies, is editor-in-chief of the Preface for the 2012 academic year. Duis will also serve as the 2012-13 Aspire magazine and newsletter intern.

TAMRA GARRETT, voice, was selected to perform with the South Bend Symphony in the 2013 Pops Concert at the Morris Performing Arts Center.

She will be a featured soloist and perform selections from Porgy and Bess. This will be the first time that student vocalists perform as soloists with the South Bend Symphony. She is a student of vocal instructor Deborah Mayer.

JOSEPH GRAF, communication studies, is managing editor of the Preface for the upcoming school year.

RUBIA HAGANS, visual arts, won the Youth First Place award with her sculpture Mother Nature at the Michiana Annual Art Competition at the Box Factory for the Arts in St. Joseph, Mich. In 2011, Hagans had a summer residency at the South Bend Museum of Art (SBMA).

NATHAN HENRY, visual arts, is the recipient of the Harold Zisla Scholarship. He participated in the Summer Studio College Residency Program exhibition at the South Bend Museum of Art. The residency program offers a unique curriculum of selfdirection for fine arts majors enrolled

in Indiana University and college art programs.

KETEVAN KARTVELISHVILI, piano performance, won first prize in the Young Artists Piano Concerto Competition in Kankakee, Ill. She was awarded a $2,000 cash prize and a performance with the Kankakee Valley Symphony Orchestra.

AMANDA MALONE and ALEISCHA SHEPHERD, members of the IU South Bend Flute Ensemble, performed music for the Donor’s Reception at the Natatorium in September 2011.

LAWRENCE MATTHEWS, voice, sang at Carnegie Hall in New York City with the United Voices of Detroit ensemble.

He competed in the Classical Singer Vocal Competition and advanced to the second round. Matthews has also been selected to perform with the South Bend Symphony in the 2013 Pops concert at the Morris Performing Arts Center as a featured soloist.

DMITRY MOLKOV, piano performance, received second prize in the 2012 Indianapolis Matinee Musicale Competition. He was also awarded the Mildred Allen Memorial Scholarship.

GIOVANNI PONCIANO, BA’12, joined Ugly Dog Media in May.

entitled Man As Object Reversing the Gaze published by SOMArts, a nonprofit arts center in San Francisco.

FACULTY & STAFF NEWS CHRISTOPHER ANDrEWS, associate faculty in fine arts, created and directed an experimental musical/theatrical work in collaboration with a group of local artists and musicians. The Work was designed to aid the preservation of Truman’s Night Club and Entertainment Complex as a thriving safe space for LGBTQ people and to re-establish the center as a supportive environment for the arts in the community. The Work is a simple-yet sophisticated-combination of drag, opera, and Butoh-esque performances. The piece is dramatic, surreal, and intense.

Alexander Blatt, stage manager, joined the Raclin School of the Arts in July. “My first performing contract was with Ringling Brother’s Circus, 1987, as clown and trampoline acrobat. Since then I studied theatre at DePaul University, attained my SAG card and became a professional stagehand,” says Blatt. “My first backstage experience was at age three, waiting at the Kennedy Center for my father, as he rehearsed with the National Symphony Orchestra. There’s something magical about “backstage” at great facilities, like we have at IU South Bend.”

KRYSTAL VIVIAN, BA’12, joined the Elkhart Truth as a digital journalist in May.

JANE CERA, assistant professor of art education, gave two presentations at the National Art Education Association Annual Convention in New York. At the first presentation, she discussed the benefits of art education in the general education curriculum.

The second presentation was about mentoring others in the art field. Cera presented “Using Social Media to Promote Individual Agency: How Allies Can Resist Discrimination in Visual Culture” at the St. Mary’s College Diversity Conference.

NATASHA STOJANOVSKA, piano performance, received first prize at the 2012 Indianapolis Matinee Musicale Competition. She was awarded the Mildred Allen Memorial Scholarhip.

Stojanovska will perform a solo recital in Indianapolis this fall as part of her prize package.

Church and the Unitarian Church of Fairfax in his composition, The City on the Hill (written for the 1993 inauguration of President Bill Clinton) at New York Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 11, 2011. The performance was part of the concert An Evening of Songs and Remembrance featuring baritone James E. Laws Jr. Laws premiered three new works for concert for cello, piano, and baritone written by Curtis.

Special guest artist soprano Denyce Graves appeared on the program. The concert commemorated 25 years of Damien Ministries’ Community Service and honoring the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedy. Three works for cello, voice, and piano composed

by Curtis were performed at The African American Art Song Alliance Conference at UC Irvine, California, and the Videmus 25th Anniversary Celebration Concert at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. In May, Curtis conducted the South Bend Symphonic Choir in West Palm Beach, Fla., as a part of the 20th anniversary celebration of the Ebony Chorale of the Palm Beaches.

LAURA CUTLER, visiting professor of fine arts, was awarded a grant from the La Porte Urban Enterprise Association for Historic Preservation and Restoration for her building, home to the Thaddeus C. Gallery. Other recognitions awarded to Cutler this year include “Creativity and Innovation Award” from the Center for Creative Solutions in Michigan City, and the “Recognition of Service Excellence Award” from the LaPorte County Convention and Visitors Bureau for creating and coordinating the 2nd Saturdays Arts and Music event in LaPorte.

The EUCLID QUARTET performed on Oct. 19 at the Chicago Cultural Center in a concert sponsored by WFMT radio. The quartet also performed in Palm Beach, Fla., at the Flagler Museum in January. The Palm Beach Daily News review said “… the Euclid Quartet performed with romantic

élan and a beautiful, lush tone that sounded orchestral at times.” Prior to that concert the quartet visited Enterprise, Ala. for a formal concert and a performance for local seventh graders, introducing most of them to live classical music for the first time.

KEVIN M. GILLEN, BA’02, senior lecturer in communication studies, participated in a benefit event at the Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA) in Northampton, Mass. The IMA is a non-profit teaching, performing, and recording facility to support women in music and music-related business.

Their philosophy includes being “rooted in women’s relationships and dedicated to promoting equality, balance, and harmony.”

ALEC HOSTERMAN, senior lecturer and area coordinator for communication studies, contributed a chapter entitled, “Twitter 101: Tweeting in the Classroom,” for the book Social Media: Usage and Impact.

The book was released by Lexington Books in December.

CHRISTINE LARSON SEITZ, adjunct faculty in music, performed at Art Beat in the Jon Hunt Plaza outside the Morris Performing Arts Center. She also performed at the Florida Flute Convention in Orlando, Fla. REBECCA HOVAN, adjunct faculty in music, attended the National Flute Convention in Charlotte, N.C. She instructed a one-day teacher training seminar on various aspects of flute teaching. She has two new publications of her arrangements: Wedding Collection for Flute and Violin and a medley of Winds Through the Olive Trees and It Came Upon the Midnight Clear for Flute and Guitar. She presented a clinic at the Texas Music Educators Convention in San Antonio.

She also attended the Mid-South Flute Festival at the University of Alabama to present a clinic, perform at the afternoon recital, and conduct the adult flute choir at the closing concert.

DEBRA INGLEFIELD, adjunct faculty 82

in music, performed as a soloist for the Elkhart Municipal Band’s concert at McNaughton Park, Elkhart. She performed Franz Strauss Fantasie for horn, Op. 2, arranged for French horn and band by her husband, Kenley, professor emeritus from Bowling Green State University, and retired associate faculty from IU South Bend.

RUBY JAZAYRE (Laury Rubin), associate faculty in dance, was featured as an instructor and soloist performer at the 6th annual Great Lakes Belly Dance Convention in Ann Arbor, Mich. This is her sixth year as one of the convention headliners.

Nine members of her troupe appeared in the convention’s Saturday evening performance, including two IU South Bend students, one IU Bloomington alumna, and one IU South Bend faculty. Jazayre was featured as a finale performer, and also taught five hour-long workshops during the event.

She was the featured artist in the fall issue of Yallah Magazine, a national Middle Eastern dance publication.

She acted as assistant stage manager for the off-Broadway production of the Dalia Carella Dance Collective’s Ten Year Retrospective in New York City. Jazayre and nine members of her dance company traveled to Lansing, Mich., to perform in the production of The Evolution of Bellydance.

LARRY LAMBERT, associate professor of communication studies, gave a presentation and was a participant in a panel talk as part of Schurz Library’s exhibit: “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War.” The theme for the panel was “Would Lincoln Get Elected Today?” The talk complemented the national traveling Lincoln exhibit that was set-up in the library, organized by the National Constitution Center and the American Library Association and funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

MICHAEL LASATER, professor of mass communication and area coordinator of new media, had a solo exhibition of multiple works at the South Bend

Museum of Art. His exhibition was in the Art League Gallery and curated

by Mark Rospenda. All pieces were in high-definition and included seven flat screens and two projections. The Jesse Stuart Foundation is running his 1997 documentary Jesse Stuart: An American Writer as a streaming video resource on their website.

The University Press of Kentucky is running his 1989 documentary James Still: Man on Troublesome Creek.

DEBORAH MAYER, MM’11, vocal instructor, performed at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center with pianist Eric Weimer. The recital, titled “An Afternoon of European Legends and Love Themes,” included a repertoire by Richard Wagner and other German composers.

JOHN MAYROSE, assistant professor of music, will premier his composition Bending Light, commissioned by Andrew Mast and the Lawrence University Bands, at the 2013 College Band Directors National Association Conference. The piece will be performed by the Lawrence University Wind Ensemble. In May 2012, pianist Michael Mizrahi released his debut CD, The Bright Motion on New Amsterdam Records. The album includes Mayrose’s composition Faux Patterns.

RON MONSMA, BA’85, associate professor of fine arts, performed on drums with the Lake Michigan College Jazz Band and the Jim Pickley Trio at the Mendel Center for the Arts.

The April 2012 issue of The Artist’s Magazine featured his article “Still Lifes and Figures in Pastel.” Three of his works appear in Manifest’s International Drawing Annual 6.

Monsma is also featured on the cover of 100 Artists of the Midwest, published by Schiffer books. Monsma was a juror in The Artist Magazine’s International Competition. His work was also accepted into the 2012 Contemporary Realism Biennial at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. SUSAN MOORE, associate professor

of fine arts, presented an exhibition titled Subdivided Views at the Artpost gallery in South Bend. She also received a grant from the Research and Development Committee to support her project “Lake Michigan: A Photographic Residency.”

JENNIFER MUÑIZ, visiting assistant professor of music, chaired a session at the College Music Society National Conference in San Diego, Calif.

JORGE MUÑIZ, associate professor of music, released La Nueche de San Xuan for flute and harp on the CD LaNoche. The CD is a collection of works by Singaporean and Spanish composers. His work for solo cello Behold, The Lamb of God with cellist Kate Dillingham premiered at Episcopal Church of Heavenly Rest in New York City. This work will also be performed at the Queens New Music Festival presented by Random Access Music in New York.

DORA NATELLA, associate professor of visual arts, was awarded the MAAC 2011 Best Sculpture Award and third place in the overall exhibit at the Michiana Annual Art Competition at the Box Factory for the Arts in St. Joseph, Mich. She was invited to show her work at the Biennial Sculpture Invitational at the Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph, Mich. Natella also created the bronze sculpture Nike for the United Way of St. Joseph County. The sculpture will serve as the United Way of St. Joseph County’s new “Ernie Award” which will be awarded annually to recognize individuals’ dedication to the community through their service with United Way. Ernestine Morris Raclin, the award’s namesake, is the first award recipient. Natella was also invited by Joseph Becherer, curator of Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids, Mich., to be part of a spring 2012 exhibition titled Body Double: The Figure in Contemporary Sculpture. Her artwork is included in two exhibitions: 2012 Contemporary Realism Biennial and the National Invitational and Juried Exhibition.

INSEUNG PARK, assistant professor of theatre, designed the scenery for Provision Theatre’s production of Bonhoeffer’s Cost in Chicago.

TAMEA RECTOR, coordinator of student services, received her Master of Arts in English from IU South Bend.

MARJORIE M. RUSCHE, associate professor of music, was selected by the Educational Testing Service, based in Princeton, N.J., to be a College Board’s Advanced Placement Reader in the subject area of Music Theory.

Rusche also reached her funding goal for composing Variations Vortex (Into the Swirling Storm), dedicated to the inspiring imagery and preservation of the environment. Euclid Quartet violinist Jacob Murphy and pianist Nicholas Roth premiered her work.

Many individual donors contributed to the project site hosted by USA Projects, with matching funds from Artists2Artists Fund, USA Open Matching Fund, Chestwater Music Commissioning Fund, Elnora Stickley Scholarship Fund, and the IU South Bend Center for a Sustainable Future.

ANDREA RUSNOCK, associate professor of art history, participated in a faculty and graduate seminar at Notre Dame featuring Gábor Tamás Rittersporn, director for research and senior research fellow at The Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (National Center for Scientific Research) in Paris. Her weaving project won “Best in Show” in the adult category at the South

Bend Regional Museum Student/ Faculty art show. Rusnock received the REEI Summer Faculty Research Fellowship through the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Endowment for her research project Old Stitches/ New Patterns: Russian Fin-de-Siècle Needlework and Imperial Culture. She received a New Frontiers Exploratory Travel Fellowship from IU. Rusnock coauthored the article “We’re Not Barbie Girls: Tweens Transform Feminine Icon” in Feminist Formations.

EDISHER SAVITSKI, adjunct faculty in music, performed as a soloist with the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra at Hilton Head Island. The concert featured Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Minor for Piano, Trumpet and Strings, Op. 35. A reviewer wrote, “Both conductor and pianist, who are native to the composer’s part of the world, have a deep understanding of Shostakovich and were very successful in drawing the audience into this unusual and complicated music.”

ERIC SOUTHER, assistant professor of new media, will exhibit his work Search Engine Vision in a group show in September at the Mint Museum of Craft + Design in Charlotte, N.C., and in February 2013 at the Museum of Art and Design in New York. His work will also be exhibited at the Scientist Video Art Festival in Ferrara, Italy.
