WELCOME WEEKS A SHORT GUIDE TO THE INTRODUCTORY WEEKS

Welcome to MSc IUSD & Stuttgart!

Before the start of the taught programme of the MSc IUSD on 14 October 2013, you will join an independent six week introductory program, which was especially set up to smoothen your arrival in Stuttgart and make you settle comfortably in your new environment. It starts with an introduction to the cours and a team building workshop.

From the second to the fifth introductory week MENA students will partake in intensive German language courses and German students will receive classes in Arabic.

Students are part of a special IUSD Urban Safari programme, which requires them to familiarize themselves and their peers with different aspects of Stuttgart. In this context, students are required to leave the well-trodden paths of newcomers to the city and share their reflections on different aspects of local city life. The experiences and results will be documented by the course and presented at the beginning of the term.

Furthermore, all students are thoroughly introduced to the faculty and the university and its diverse services. Continuous support in administrational affairs is also provided during the introductory weeks.

In partaking and preparing an Urban Safari in Stuttgart, IUSD students are asked to explore issues of complexity, urban patterns, conflicts, and potentials in Stuttgart’s cityscape. In an Urban Safari, the city becomes an urban classroom: students are required to actively explore their new hometown.

After one introductory tour, IUSD students split into three teams of eight to nine students assisted by a tutor. Each team is required to produce a particular urban safari for their peers. Each safari should show a specific approach to the city by either choosing a certain route, or a way of moving through the city. In addition, each safari should end with a shared meal for the whole IUSD group. A budget for the meals is available to each preparatory team. Students prepare, document and visualize their trips by making use of data and computer software of Univerity.

Keep in mind that you will need different documents for each of these administrational tasks. Enquire with your buddy what to bring along for each of the appointments. K1 The Building of the Faculty of Architecture is called K1.

Most of the Instituts, offices and studios are located in this building. This is your working environment.

IUSD Studios K1, 8th floor. R 8.04 and R. 8.05 There will be two studios reserved for your group for individual studies at K1, group work, building models and spend time between classes. You have free access and you can stay there as long as you want, but you are also responsible for the room. You should sweep every once a while and you have to empty the trash bin. For the trash there are big containers behind K1. If anything gets broken you have to report it immediately to the Deans office. !! To get a key to your studio you need to make a deposit of 100 Euro at the rector‘s office, your Buddy will help you with that in the first week. ! Important !

If you want to stay long in the night you need a special signed permission! The IUSD coordinator will provide you with it.

Also notice that the entrance door to K1 is closed from outside after the opening Hours, same for K4. Once you are out you are out until someone comes along or you can try to ring at the nightwatchers door (side entrance).

Casino IT The computer pool for all students of the faculty.

It’s located next to K1 in the smaller building named K4 or “Siemens” building. Here you have access to computers, scanners and printers.

All the common CAD, GIS, design and layout programs are available on the computers.

You need an account to log in. This will be explained to you during the introduction weeks.

There is also the possibility to rent camera or video equipment. ! Important !

You can stay there all night and on weekends but the entrance door is closed from outside during the night. Once you are out you are out until someone comes along.

Other computers For a quick surf there are some computers in K1. In the foyer, go down the stairs to the left side entrance. Or go to the Faculty Library in the 5th. floor.

WLAN On the Camps you can use the W-lan connection of the University with your notebooks.

Plotservice at University The Plotservice, run by students, belongs to the Casino IT and is on the same floor. Here you can have your presentation posters printed for a student friendly price. A4 and A3 color laser-prints or booklets are also possible. Important: You need to upload the files (account is needed). You can also book an appointment for plotting there. This is advisable if you need plots for a certain day or if you have more than two or three A0.This will also be explained to you during your visit to the casino. office hours during term: Mo – Thu:

Copying For black and white copies A4 and A3 you can use the printers in the K1 foyer. You can also print PDF’s brought on a flash drive, or scan to your flash drive. For these printers you need a card which you can get from the small machine next to it.

5 € deposit for the card and then you still have to upload it with money for printing and scanning. This card is also needed for the self-service printers in the casino.

Still the cheapest and fastest way to print b/w.

Plotservice outside University Induprint If you cannot get an appointment at the plotservice the “Induprint” is a good alternative.

It’s located inside the “Fachhochschule” building on the campus, in the groundfloor, Schellingstraße 24 10 .

They also have student prices and are very friendly and helpful.

They can also print real books if you should need this.

Workshops For building design models or prototypes of your designs there are several workshops where you have access to circular saws, grinding machines and much more to work on your models. There is also a laser and an automatic cutting machine to produce very accurate and detailed works.

You will have a visit to one of those workshops and the “robo lab� during your introduction weeks.

Spraying If you need to color a model or something and want to spray it, never do this in the studio nor on the floors or you will get problems with the caretaker.

There is a special room in the basement where you can do this. ! Important ! turn on (and off) the air-machine!

Materialverkauf/Material supply Basic cardboards you can get from the „Materialverkauf“ in K1 for a very reasonable price.

It’s located in the ground floor, just the next door to “Induprint”. (look-up Page 12: Campus Stadtmitte/City Campus map to find the Fachhochschule 10 ) Deko Maier For more special stuff for building models, the shop called “deko-maier” is the best in town. There you can find everything, including papers, wood, pencils and sketchbooks…

They are very helpful and friendly and can tell you which material to use for which kind of model. Ask for student discount!

Dekanat/Deans office It’s the main secretary for the whole faculty. If you have any questions or need help and don’t know where to go or whom to ask, they most likely can help you or know where to send you.

Hausmeister / Caretaker of the Facility Management The caretaker of K1 is Mr. Sauer.

You can get brooms, vacuum cleaner and garbage bags there for maintaining your studio.

There you can also go if you have any problems with the rooms. If you need a projector for a presentation outside of Labor 8 you can borrow it there.

His office is located in the foyer of K1.

RUS / Central IT Unit of the University The RUS-office is responsible for all computer related things of the whole University.

(Network, W-lan…) You won’t need it but if you have any problem with your account, login, using the wi-fi… you can go to their helpdesk in the campus-library (first floor, left beside the library counter)
