WELCOME
WELCOME, FAMILIES AND FRIENDS
WELCOME, GRADUATES, TO THE IUP ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
The IUP community extends its appreciation to the families and friends of a very distinguished graduating class. Over the past several years, class members have worked and studied and are now ready to begin a new chapter in their lives. For some, this will mean a job and the responsibilities of a family. For others, it will mean graduate or professional school. The university community hopes that, whatever course their future takes, these graduates will look back on their years here as having prepared them to meet and deal with the challenges that life will present.
Welcome to the IUP Alumni Association. As a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, you are automatically a member of the alumni association. There are no dues to pay and no rules or regulations to follow. The association brings alumni together on campus, virtually, and in regions across the nation and around the globe, providing opportunities for networking with fellow graduates. COMMENCEMENT Indiana University of Pennsylvania Virtual Ceremonies Graduate and Undergraduate Saturday, September 12, 2020, 9:00 a.m. • Eberly College of Business and Information Technology • College of Education and Communications • College of Fine Arts • College of Health and Human Services • College of Humanities and Social Sciences • Kopchick College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (including interdisciplinary programs in Academic Affairs)
THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there, O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
ALMA MATER To our noble Alma Mater’s name, We, her children, sing a joyful lay, And to her a new allegiance pledge, That lives beyond a day. Refrain:
Sing, O sing, our Alma Mater’s praise, Hail, O hail, her colors’ gleaming hue! Give to her our homage and our love, And to her name be true.

DISTINGUISHED UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR At IUP, Merlo has chaired nine dissertation committees and has served on another 12. She also administers her department’s internship program and, for many years, coordinated its graduate program in criminology at IUP’s Monroeville Center (now Pittsburgh East). As chair of her department’s Speakers’ Committee, she has brought to campus many distinguished academics in the field. She also coordinates the annual Alumni Career Panel, giving students an opportunity to learn about career possibilities and to network with criminology professionals. She has also been active in IUP’s graduate and undergraduate scholars forums. She served on the committee that developed the format for the graduate forum and, since 2011, has judged graduate student posters and presentations.
Alida V. Merlo Criminology and Criminal Justice
During her tenure as Distinguished University Professor, she will assess educational programs for delinquent youth and explore implications of the 2019 legislation that authorized trauma-informed education in Pennsylvania public schools.
Alida Merlo, professor of criminology and criminal justice, has been selected as IUP’s 2020-21 Distinguished University Professor. A member of the IUP faculty since 1995, Merlo is nationally known for her scholarship in juvenile justice policy, and she shares her passion for that work with students of all levels.
“I anticipate that this research will identify characteristics of successful programs or strategies that can be emulated,” Merlo said. “They can help inform policy and provide a blueprint for other juvenile justice systems to follow. It could be the beginning of a new era in education.”
“I have worked to guide generations of scholars and practitioners,” she said. “I argue for a more compassionate, trauma-informed approach in dealing with youth who are often victims of maltreatment prior to their involvement in delinquency.”
ABOUT THE AWARD The Office of the President recognizes one faculty member each year with the Distinguished University Professor Award, based on a record of outstanding teaching, university service, and active and demonstrable engagement in research/scholarly activity that advances his or her discipline or its pedagogy. In addition to the lifetime title, the award earns recipients a grant and a reduced teaching load for one year to allow more time for research and scholarship.
Merlo has been recognized for her teaching and research and was twice honored by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences for her mentoring. Only the third woman to be elected the academy’s president, she has received its Fellow Award for contributions to justice education and scholarship and its Founder’s Award for service. Merlo’s mentoring has benefited both junior faculty members and students. She has served as an invited presenter for pre-tenure faculty members to aid in their teaching, research, and service. In addition, two of her former graduate students who went on to become faculty members at Slippery Rock University established an award in her honor, the Alida V. Merlo Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award, presented annually at that university.
Past recipients are as follows: Donald A. Walker, Economics, 1988; Leon D. VandeCreek, Psychology, 1989; John N. Fox, Physics, 1990; Mary R. Jalongo, Professional Studies in Education, 1991; John W. Her writing—which includes seven coauthored or coedited books, 22 book chapters, 33 journal articles, 14 invited lectures, and more than 115 conference presentations— examines and assesses the transformation of the juvenile justice system and criminal justice policy in the 20th and 21st centuries, with an emphasis on the role of media, ideology, and politics.

A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DRISCOLL To the Degree Recipients,
ABOUT THE PRESIDENT
Congratulations on completing your degree program. Of course, we all would have preferred to be together in Ed Fry Arena, but COVID-19 had different plans for us. Nonetheless, commencement is a time to celebrate an end as well as a beginning. In your case, this is the beginning, the commencing, of the next phase of your life. We expect you to take what you have learned and use it to make this world a better place.
President Michael Driscoll’s leadership of IUP has been guided by principles that include empowering students to become the world’s transformative leaders through high-quality academic programs, strong support structures, and interconnected, hands-on learning experiences outside the classroom. Under his leadership, the university continues to develop new academic degree programs and revamp existing ones, leveraging IUP’s strengths to meet the needs of Pennsylvania’s residents while attracting students from across the nation and around the world. IUP’s international student population is the largest within Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. Many students enroll at IUP for noteworthy programs such as safety sciences, music, and criminology. An American Psychological Association publication has cited IUP’s doctoral program in clinical psychology as among the nation’s top five, while the Modern Language Association has praised IUP’s doctoral programs in English as among the most successful in advancing careers. During his tenure, President Driscoll has focused on creating a studentcentered educational environment. Since 2012, IUP has formed, among other initiatives, the President’s Commission on Diversity and Inclusion, the Center for Multicultural Student Leadership and Engagement, the Military and Veterans Resource Center, and the University College, a resource for all students but particularly for those who are still exploring their options for a major course of study.
You’ll be surprised at what you’ll take along with you. Some things you think you’ll always remember, you may soon forget. What will stay in your memory longest may be a particular professor. Years from now, you may still recall a lecture that person gave or a comment that person wrote on one of your papers. I can predict these memories with confidence, not just because I was once a new college graduate, but because I read alumni magazines. I see the letters and reminiscences that graduates contribute. Sometimes, they refer in detail to lectures that were given 50 or 60 years ago. Imagine! Though you may have absorbed the contents of myriad textbooks or performed any number of laboratory experiments, it is the human interaction you’ll likely carry with you—perhaps as long as you live. While faculty members have been teaching you their subjects, they’ve also been teaching you how to look at the world. Henry Adams wrote, “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” Congratulations on your achievement. Michael A. Driscoll President

THE SYMBOLS OF LEARNING Participants in the commencement procession are attired in regalia that reflects a history and heritage that can be traced to the medieval universities of the 11th and 12th centuries. Modern academic regalia evolved from the kinds of apparel worn by monks and students in the Middle Ages to keep warm in the medieval castles and halls in which they studied. Academic life as we know it today began in the Middle Ages, first in the church, then in the guilds. The teaching guild was the Guild of the Master of Arts, and the Bachelor was the apprentice of the Master; their dress was the outward sign of stature and responsibility. Academic regalia was thus a visible manifestation—in color and pattern and design—that unified those of common discipline and like purpose. In later centuries, to preserve the regalia’s dignity and meaning, universities set rules of academic dress. American universities agreed on a definite system in 1895, establishing a code of approved attire. In 1932, the American Council on Education revised this code, which, for the most part, governs the style of academic dress today. The principal features of academic dress are three: the gown, the cap, and the hood. The Gown. The flowing gown dates to the 12th century. Many think it was worn as protection against the cold of unheated buildings. It has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, for it completely covers any dress of rank or social standing. It is (with a few institutional exceptions) black for all degrees. Pointed sleeves indicate the bachelor’s degree; long closed sleeves with a slit in the arm, the master’s degree; and round open sleeves, the doctoral degree. The gowns for bachelor’s and master’s degrees have no trimmings; the gown for the doctoral degree is faced down the front with velvet and has three bars of velvet across the sleeves, in the color distinctive of the faculty or discipline in which the degree pertains. The official colors of the college may also appear in the gown or its decorations. The trustees and some administrators of IUP wear gowns of slate trimmed in crimson velvet. The Cap. The freed slave in ancient Rome won the privilege of wearing a cap, and so the academic cap is a sign of the freedom of scholarship and the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. Old poetry records the cap of scholarship as square, symbolizing the book, although other authorities claim that it is a mortarboard, the symbol of the masons, a privileged guild. At the baccalaureate level, the color of the tassel on the cap denotes the discipline. The tassel is moved from the right side of the cap to the left side upon conferral of the degree. The Hood. In regalia, the hood is an inverted shield with one or more chevrons of a secondary color on the ground of the primary color of the college. The color of the facing of the hood denotes the discipline represented by the degree; the color of the lining of the hood designates the university or college from which the degree was granted.
The Mace is a ceremonial staff carried by a senior faculty member who serves as the grand marshal. This official opens and closes all academic convocations. Artist and metalsmith Walter J. Kipp, a 1942 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, designed and constructed the mace for IUP in 1967. The design was created around the state seal, which was placed at the top of the mace. The large keystone which comes next symbolizes the state emblem, and on this keystone the letters IUP are placed. The handturned shaft is made of native Pennsylvania walnut. The President’s Medallion is worn by the president of the university during academic convocations as a symbol of the leadership responsibilities vested in that office. Michael A. Driscoll was the first president to wear the current medallion, which features the university seal in antiqued silver and crimson. A creation of the IUP Design Studio, this fourth presidential medallion was constructed by Medallic Art Company in 2014. Walter Kipp made the original medallion in 1968 for the 15th president, William W. Hassler. Robert W. Hamilton ’54, M’64, professor emeritus of art, created a replacement medallion in 1998, and Wendell August Forge crafted a third in 2005. The Philanthropy Cord is worn as a symbol of philanthropic pride by the newest alumni who have contributed to the Senior Giving Campaign. This doubleknotted gray and crimson cord symbolizes the reciprocal commitment between IUP and its alumni. The Education Abroad Cord, blue and green entwined, designates students who have participated in an education abroad program during their time at IUP. These students have studied, volunteered, and/or interned in a wide variety of majors at institutions and other locations throughout the world.

THE SYMBOLS OF LEARNING The Regional Campus Cord, in crimson and gold, is worn by new graduates who studied at an IUP regional campus. The crimson represents IUP as the degreegranting institution, and the gold symbolizes the knowledge and determination that were keys to success at the regional campus. The Lavender Cord is worn by graduates who identify across the spectrum of gender identity, gender expression, and/or sexual orientation. The lavender represents a
combination of the pink and black triangles gay men, lesbians, and some political prisoners were forced to wear in Nazi concentration camps. The Red, White, and Blue Cord indicates a student’s military affiliation. Those wearing the cord may be current or former members of the military or their family members.
