Mission Statement Students achieve their academic, professional, and personal goals in high-quality, intensive English courses at the American Language Institute at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. We offer a supportive environment for students to develop English language skills and a deeper understanding of U.S. academic culture.

American Language Institute The American Language Institute at Indiana University of Pennsylvania has been welcoming students from around the world since 1981. The ALI prides itself on academic excellence with highly-qualified teachers, challenging courses, and individual attention for our students. In addition to intensive English coursework, students also benefit from interactions with peer tutors, cultural excursions, and co-curricular programming. Conditional admission and our Bridge pathway program are excellent options for ALI students to prepare for success in IUP degree programs. The multilingual and multicultural diversity of the ALI provides great learning opportunities for our students and members of the IUP and Indiana community. IUP is a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. The ALI is a member of EnglishUSA and is recognized under IUP’s MSCHE accreditation.

How to Apply ALI applications are accepted throughout the year on a rolling basis with start dates in mid-January, late May, and mid-August. We recommend applying at least 60 days before you plan to begin study.
Apply now at IUP.edu/ali Required documents– upload to the online application or email to ali-programs@iup.edu: • Copy of valid passport photo page • High school transcript (Must be in English) • Financial affidavit & supporting documents Optional documents– submit if available: • University transcript (Must be in English) • Language proficiency exam scores Conditional admission is available for undergraduate and select graduate programs at IUP. Complete the application for your intended degree program and select yes for interest in ALI conditional admission. Students with conditional admission can study as full-time ALI or ALI Bridge students to prepare for their degree program.

Bridge Program The Bridge Program provides advanced ALI students the opportunity to take one or two credit-bearing courses at IUP while studying English and U.S. academic culture in four ALI classes. Bridge students with conditional admission receive a Pathway I-20.
Undergraduate Bridge Students must submit a qualifying English proficiency exam and receive ALI approval. Students can satisfy the English proficiency requirement for IUP undergraduate admission by successfully completing nine IUP credit hours including English 101 through the Bridge Program.
Graduate Bridge Graduate Bridge is available for select programs. Students must submit a qualifying English proficiency exam and receive approval from their program coordinator. Students can satisfy the English proficiency requirement for IUP graduate admission by successfully completing six IUP credit hours through the Bridge Program.

Campus Resources ALI students have access to the amenities and services of IUP students, including technology (computer labs, electronic accounts, etc.), library privileges, fitness and recreation facilities, health and wellness center, attendance at sporting events, on-campus housing and dining, free use of IndiGo bus, and participation in student organizations. ACE Tutoring American Culture and English (ACE) Tutoring is a unique opportunity for ALI students to benefit from individualized instruction with highly qualified peer tutors. In the ACE Tutoring class, ALI students and their tutors meet twice a week for 75 minutes per session to focus on self-directed learning. With guidance from tutors, ALI students can make progress on course assignments, practice language skills, and explore topics related to local and academic culture.
