Report to Donors

Donors come in many forms.
Our donors made it possible for our Imagine Unlimited Campaign to reach 83 percent of our $75-million goal at the end of our fiscal year, on June 30, 2019. You’ll see in this report that, because donors—you—are passionate about creating a better world through the power of education, IUP students will be better prepared in science and mathematics, will gain new perspective through eyeopening experiences, and will learn the lessons of leadership through competition. Everyone at IUP is grateful for your support.
I also applaud and thank all who give the gift of time through volunteer service. Having access to your ideas, your advice, and your connections is a different kind of resource, but it is a powerful one that has a lasting effect. You are our advocates and champions.
All combined, these gifts of time and treasure you give enable IUP to be innovative, to be flexible and evolve with a changing world, and to expose and prepare our students to the world they’ll lead after they graduate.
Together, we are making a positive impact on communities around the globe.
Thank you.
Sincerely,

“We were thrilled when Rick reconnected with our department,” said Ben Ford, chair of the Anthropology Department. “His generosity is going a long way to support student research as well as increasing our department’s profile.”
Decades of alumni remember the annual spring musical theater productions called Swing Out, which were planned and executed by the late Charlie Davis ’34 and Bob Ensley. Ensley’s daughter, Barbara “Peach” Ensley Mack ’68, grew up watching the productions unfold and knows firsthand the impact her father and Davis had on their students. That drove her to work to establish the Charles Davis and Robert
ene Schmidt ’64 credits his great aunt for pressing him to get his degree, but it was a chance meeting through his friend Bob Bulas ’58 that Schmidt met coach Regis “Peck” McKnight ’30 and then enrolled at IUP and joined the basketball team. Hard work in basketball carried over to hard work in the classroom, and Schmidt found his way to a fulfilling career as one of 11 Pennsylvania State Education Association field directors. With a deep desire to improve lives, he established a fund—the Gene Schmidt and Norma Altemus Scholarship—to benefit members of IUP’s men’s basketball team honor his great aunt.
Malik Miller gravitated to IUP because of academic programs and the team culture he found under men’s basketball coach Joe Lombardi. A beneficiary of the scholarship Schmidt created, Miller is a first-generation student enrolled in the communications media and sport management programs.
“I am tremendously grateful for the opportunities,” he said. “It’s hard work, but I would not be where I am today without my

s dean of the College of Health and Human Services in the late 1980s, Hal Wingard was among those who led the establishment of the IUP Academy of Culinary Arts in Punxsutawney.
“It was a dream come true to prepare graduates to meet the challenges in the culinary field with great skills, hardworking attitudes, and a sense of accountability that serves their businesses
To honor that accomplishment, Wingard and his wife, Betty, made a significant commitment to a new culinary facility.
“Because of the Wingards, we have taken a big step forward to reach our goal of constructing a state-of-the-art instructional facility that will house our world-class programs. The Wingards’ support enables us to contribute more to the university and to the culinary field,” said Chef Lynn Pike ’04, M’06, the academy’s director.
