I had the pleasure to get to know Iunia first when she was a student at the UIA summer school “Resilient Cities through Culture” in Seoul, South Korea in 2017. The summer school was sponsored by UIA, Danish Association of Architects and Imagination Cross Cultures. Here I got to know Iunia as a hard worker, a fast learner, and a curious architect. Her attitude, optimism and approach to teamwork was obvious between her and her colleagues from across the world and contagious among the wider group. She has a deep passion for architecture, community, and research. During her speech at the Student Forum at the UIA congress, she demonstrated great communication and visual skills as she talked about the temporary architecture or “pop-up” architecture as the future of architecture. The a. penthouse is located on the top floor of one of the newest residential complexes in Cluj-Napoca. Spanning 170 square meters, five rooms, three bathrooms, one kitchen and two technical rooms, the interior design is luxurious, yet warm, cozy and inviting. The ambiance is made possible through the combination of different textures and colours, with a preference for earthy colours and noble materials such as marble, natural stones, brass, hardwood and wood textures, glass, smoked mirrors and leather. The project started in 2020 and I was in charge of all its phases, from its concept to the custom furniture design, finishings and technical plans. I handled client discussions, site visits and all the discussions with a third party regarding the rendering phase.

The b. apartment spans 75 square meters, three rooms and two bathrooms. The clients, a young couple from ClujNapoca, wanted a modern, white home. The project had two big challenges: to incorporate the colour white without making the apartment cold or uninviting and to create a space that appears larger than it is. The first problem was solved by using pastel colours such as gray, pink, green and beige were used to break the monotony of the white. Furthermore, the colour white was used with different textures that add depth and variety to the design. To make the space seem larger, we used minimal furniture with a simple geometry, the white colour and epoxy floors that lighten up the space. The project started in 2019 and it was finalized in 2020. I was in charge of all its phases, from its concept to the custom furniture design and finishings. I handled client discussions, site visits and all the discussions with a third party regarding the rendering phase.

The 30b. apartment is not your typical bachelor pad. The client’s wish was to have a modern, simple but warm home, with a mix of wood textures and warm colours. The apartment spans 80 square meters, three rooms, one kitchen and two bathrooms. The hallway connects to an open space that includes the kitchen, the dining room and the living room, plus access points to all other rooms. The central island creates a subtle separation between the spaces, separating the hallway area from the living area. Furthemore, it creates storage spaces that was missing from the place due to the scarcity of the furniture, a main wish of the client’s. The project started and ended in 2020 and I was in charge of all its parts, particulalry the custom furniture design. I handled client discussions, site visits and all the discussions with a third party regarding the rendering phase.

The aparthotel spans 80 square meters and is a three-room apartment situated in a 20th century building close to the historical center in Cluj-Napoca. The place was bought in total ruin and very few details of the old apartment were preserved The clients’ wish was to transform the old apartment into a joyful place that could be rented as an airbnb. Modern and classic elements mix in a fun, colorful interior, one that’s perfect for a vacation. The colour green was used as an unifying element in the design, an accent among the more muted colours such as beige, gray and white. The project started in 2020 and I was in charge of the design process.

The collumna workspaces are on the ground floor of the same residential complex that houses the a. penthouse. Its 140 square meters are the headquarters of the real estate agency that owns the complex. The clients wanted a professional and elegant design, one that exuded power and luxury. High-end furniture was used together with high-quality materials and finishes. The project started in 2020 and I was in charge of all its phases, from its concept to the custom furniture design, finishings and technical plans. I handled client discussions, site visits and all the discussions with a third party regarding the rendering phase. The brass bookcase in the CFO office and the marble table close to the bookcase are two pieces of furniture I designed.

The f.h. supermarket is a project I designed and handled on my own in 2021. It has 120 square meters and it is located in a rural area, which heavily influenced the concept and design. Nature. and especially the green forests that surround the small town inspired the design, colours and textures of this place. Simple, unpretentious elements were used for the design, such as wood and stone finishes, metallic structures and simple geometric shapes for every accessory and custom furniture. The idea is to make the client feel welcomed and respected in a place that is designed to cater to their needs. The minimal textures and colors are meant to highlight the products and not overshadow them. The project started and ended in 2021 and I was in charge of all its parts, from custom furniture design to technical plans and finishes. I handled clients and site work contractors discussions, site visits and furniture and accessories shopping.

The Clear Skin Beauty Salon is a personal project I designed in 2019. The client wanted a delicate, elegant and soft space where future clients will be able to relax and receive various beauty treatments. Its 60 square meters were divided into five rooms: three salons, one bathroom and one technical room. The entrance opens up to a curved wall clad in wood that softens and reduces the size of the place and serves as a perfect canvas to display the name of the salon. The only touch of colour are the velvet green armchairs that add a note of elegance to the place. The bright colours and textures that were used in every room create a delicate, light atmosphere, but they are also meant to not darken the place as the natural light is scarce. The project started in 2019 and I was in charge of the design part, from custom furniture design to technical plans and finishes.

psychiatric rehabilitation center for patients with schizophrenia

diploma and master thesis design - coordinator Kiss Andrei Cluj 2017-2018

I asked myself the question: how can we, the architects, create a better environment for the everyday user so that they don’t feel threatened in any way? And, if an individual suffers from schizophrenia or another disorder that alters their perception of the world (such as Alzheimer ‘s disease or dementia), what can we do to provide them with a better and healthier space that can help in their rehabilitation and prevent further psychotic episodes? Even though the way in which we perceive reality and space is highly subjective, there are certain aspects of perception that schizophrenia affects quite consistently, and that these are the aspects that can be supported by adjusting how we design the places we inhabit to make it less likely to feel threatening. In my research I analyzed both healthy people’s perception and that of people suffering from schizophrenia to find out if design can find a common ground that could accommodate every person, regardless of their mental health problems. I discovered six characteristics that can be applied to different types of spaces and which are also the core of design for my rehabilitation center.

Geoagiu-Bai Resort, Romania

1. Limits and Personal Space: space is designed to provide the patient with the intimate spaces without feeling disconnected from the group. Chairs, such as seen above, have the ability to create personal space, they can encourage conversation but can also create intimacy and distance.

4. Navigable Space: different kind of floors and signs help the patients navigate the space and notice where is the exit (as it is presented in the image) or the access to their rooms.

2. Sociopetal Space: spaces such as the interior gardens present in the project, are designed to encourage human interaction and conversations while being close to nature and natural light.

5. Space Geometry: the curved walls and the open spaces can help prevent paranoid episodes (patients consider that straight angles and narrowed spaces can lead to suspicions and later on, to psychotic episodes).

3. Mnemonic Space: because people suffering from schizophrenia have problems with their short-term memory, the therapy rooms and their own individual rooms have assigned a different symbol to help them remember where they are by associating the symbol with the action that takes place inside the room.

6. Sensitive Space: by using natural light, direct access to nature and different textures, we can engage all the human senses and provide a richer experience for the patients in an environment that has to be devoid of a surplus of information. Also, by creating a different image of the center, we erase the “prison atmosphere” that most of this institutes have.

The Clocota River connects the facility to the town, but also to the nature, thus allowing it to be integrated in a community without being the center of attention.

There is pedestrian access through the park, and the side road allows vehicles and the ambulance to reach the center in case of emergency.

The center provides different activities for patients and outpatients, such as a restaurant, a coffee shop for visitors, art classes, music classes, a swimming pool with thermal water provided by the natural local springs.

The two parts of the center (the one for the outpatients and the one for the patients) are connected through a third volume that serves as the filter between patients and society, a way to help them interact and understand each other better.

Nature plays an important role in the treatment. The center allows access to the exterior from different points of the building, and if one wants privacy, they can benefit from the interior gardens of from the roof garden situated on the 2nd floor.

32 students from 15 countries around the world gathered for a two-week symposium on the theme of Resilient Cities through Culture in Seoul, along with tutors from five universities and international speakers, to discuss the role of culture in sustainable city making. The theme for the UIA congress was Soul of City and it sets out to assess and enhance the unique features of the city of Seoul. While climate change and knowledgesharing have no country borders sustainable environmental solutions often have to be tailored to specific contexts, climates and cultures in order to succeed. With this objective the summer school set out to explore how a deeper understanding of a specific culture and community can support sustainable city structures for tomorrow through sharing, communities, hacking, confrontation and adaptation.

Changsin-dong neighbourhood emerged as a residential area for workers of the sewing factories serving the Dongdaemun Pyeonghwa market in Seoul. Changsin-Dong is an organically grown shared economy in the heart of Seoul. A dynamic community that can mass produce garments within three days - an extremely efficient process. It works through the collaboration of over 700 small and medium sized factories each primarily focusing on one of five stages of creating a piece of clothing. They use a shared network of couriers on motorbikes and small vans to deliver their product to the next stage in a new factory. This model of manufacturing is extremely sustainable and resilient through its flexibility. Not only does it allow small factory owners, the owners of a living room sized workshop, to participate in a successful enterprise, it allows them to maximize their output potential, to grow and to shrink according to their circumstances, it also allows for a sort of metabolic community and a metabolic architecture to facilitate it. Our drawing of Changsin-Dong explores the potential of shared economy, where individuals have access to more resources at a lower cost. It moves away from the neoliberal paradigm to a new era of shared economic trends - car sharing, house sharing and co-working spaces.

Over the course of a week we developed an exhibition in a team of seventeen local high school students and eleven former students now turned tutors, called Imagineers, from all over the world. The group consisting of students, young architects, a scenographer, a graphic designer, an anthropologist and a historian, was asked two key questions, in relation to thinking about the Outside-in: how can a museum become a meeting place in a spread-out city? And from Inside-Out: what’s a museum for young people? The recommendations were developed through five impressions, or ‘moods’ young people demand from a city museum today - Discovery, Transition, Sharing, Belonging, Unexpected. These five moods were then built as large-scale installations in five spaces within the post office, using 600 meters of canvas, light and five sewing machines. The week culminated with a pop-up exhibition for city residents and the creation of the museums “Young People Advisory Board”. The workshop was the first transformation of the post office towards a new city museum. The ‘winter school’ is a different form of community engagement. We believe student workshops are catalysts for change, where thoughts and ideas are shared and shaped by the future generation. The objective for the school was to collaborate and share knowledge across different ages, disciplines and cultures.

Verde pe Canalul Morii or Green on the Morii Channel is an initiative of a mixed group formed by neighbors and specialists, and it aims at appropriating and activating the underutilized public space on the Morii Channel. The project is supported by the Cluj Cultural Center through the Cultural Innovation Fund and is part of the first series of temporary experiments that aim at a cultural approach to city problems. The pallet installation adapts to an existing space without bringing major changes to the landscape. The materials used here give the idea of temporality and encourages passersby to enjoy the present and not take things for granted. The dynamic form is aimed at all age groups. Wood was chosen as the main material for both the installation and the bridge in order to create a link - a route between the green space and the Farmec Park, and also to invite people to walk and enjoy the Morii Channel. The bridge was born out of the need to have a secure connection between Farmec Park and the other bank of the Morii Channel. The final solution provides for the perpendicular positioning of the bridge on both sides, and the connection with the park and alley is created by the triangular appendages at the ends of the bridge (the triangle from the sports base is a continuation of the park’s alleys, and the one from the apartment buildings guides the visitors to the concrete alley).
