Dear Donors & Friends of the Department of Information & Library Science (ILS), Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, Welcome to Accolade, a new publication from ILS, featuring our scholarship awardees from the 2019-2020 academic school year. We hope that you will enjoy reading about these fantastic students, all of whom were able to continue their studies in Information and Libray Science due to your generous donations.

In 2019-2020, we were able to give out $146,000 via 69 separate awards to 44 students. Out of these 44 students, 7 were Ph.D. students, and 37 were master’s students.

Some of these students have now graduated, while others are beginning yet another semester of graduate school. The ILS Scholarship Committee for 2019-2020, consisting of Pnina Fichman, Noriko Hara, and Howard Rosenbaum, all faculty and program directors in ILS, made the determinations for who would receive each scholarship based on merit, need, and donor specifications.

Aysha Aktar

Aysha Aktar has been awarded the Digital Libraries Graduate Scholarship, which supports graduate students participating in the Digital Libraries Specialization Program.

Aktar graduated in May 2020 with a Master of Library Science and a specialization in Digital Libraries. She grew up in Bangladesh and moved to Kansas to pursue higher education. Aktar previously graduated with a Sociology degree from Washburn University of Kansas. She is an avid student and plans to pursue a career in an academic setting after graduation as a librarian in digital infrastructure and preservation. Aktar expressed her gratitude for receiving the scholarship.

David Allan received the May Copeland Fellowship, which is awarded to incoming students returning to school after obtaining at least one year of work experience, with an excellent academic record, and who wish to pursue an MLS degree.This fellowship was founded by IU alumna Phinetta Jane Habegger who studied library science at IU and worked in the library profession. She established the fellowship in honor of her mother, May Copeland. Allan says, “It is difficult to express my enthusiasm for beginning the Master of Library Science degree at IU.” He completed his undergraduate degree two decades ago and entered the working world. Allan spent time in retail and customer service, working up to management positions in restaurants and at a college bookstore. However, the jobs he enjoyed the most were in libraries. He explained, “Research was always my favorite part of college, while helping people is the best part of customer service. Librarians do both, what more could you want? I was privileged enough to work with some dedicated librarians who helped me realize a direction for my

career. Circumstances have finally aligned to allow me to study at IU and the May Copeland Fellowship is helping to make that possible, for which I am so thankful.” Allan plans to focus on preservation and digitization because maintaining rare vulnerable collections while also democratizing access to the finest works in history is a worthy calling.

George Barnhouse received the Evelyn Ray Sickels Award, which is given to a student with exceptional potential in the field of youth services librarianship. It was established in honor of Evelyn Ray Sickels, who was one of the editors of the Anthology of Children’s Literature, (in its 5th edition in 1981). Sickels was, for many years, the head librarian at the Indianapolis Public Library. Barnhouse graduated in May 2020 with a Masters of Library Science and intends on being a youth services librarian after accumulating many experiences and achievements in the field.

Shannon Bowman-Sarkisian received the May Copeland Fellowship and the Information and Library Science Student Support Fund, which is awarded to graduate students in the Department of Information and Library Science selected by the ILS Scholarship Committee. Bowman-Sarkisian is a Senior Information Assistant at Monroe County Public Library (MCPL) and a second year Master of Library Science graduate student at Indiana University Bloomington. She was awarded Monroe County Public Library’s 2019 Pioneer Grant to fund the Creating Access for Violence Survivors (CAVS) project to reduce library and information access barriers for domestic violence survivors in Monroe County. She holds an MFA in creative writing from San José State University and a BFA in Writing for Publication, Performance, and Media from Pratt Institute. Malachai Darling

Malachai Darling was awarded the Frances E. Hammitt Memorial Scholarship, which is given to graduate students in the Department of Information and Library Science selected by the ILS Scholarship Committee.

He was also awarded the Data Curation/ Preservation of Electronic Resources Graduate Scholarship, which is awarded to students preparing for careers in archives and records management specialization and related areas. Darling graduated in May 2020 with a Master of Library Science degree and a specialization in archives and records management. His goal is to become an archivist in a college or university, specifically in reference and public services. “I cannot say how appreciative I am for these generous gifts,” Darling says. “My mother’s passing has created an unforeseen financial burden in a lot of ways. Furthermore, at the beginning of the semester my car broke down, and I needed to get a new one. I was kind of worried about being able to make up the difference in my tuition next semester. With this gift, I no longer have to worry about that, and I can devote more energy into applying for jobs.”

Kate Duneman received the Gines Graduate Library Science Scholarship, which is awarded to graduate students in the Department of Information and Library Science who are pursuing a degree in the field of Library Science in preparation for a professional career in the public services area. The Gines Graduate Library Science Scholarship was established in 2017 by James Gines to honor his late wife, Noriko. Noriko was initially exposed to the field of Library Science while working in the East Asian Collection of the Wells Library. She began her MLS at IU and finished at Columbia University. She went

on to have a 26-year long career as a librarian at the United Nations Dag Hammarskjold Library. Duneman also received the Margaret I. Rufsvold Graduate Fellowship Fund, awarded annually to a person whose record gives evidence of superior potential for success as a library/information professional. This award was established in 1979 by Margaret Rufsvold, who was the Director of Library Curriculum from 1938 to 1947, and then became the Director of the Division of Library Science in the School of Education at Indiana University Bloomington from 1947 to 1966.

Kate was born in Bloomington, IN, and pursued undergraduate studies in English at IU Bloomington. There she focused on creative writing and folklore while playing music in her free time. After taking an extended break from school and work to care for her children, she was thrilled to be working towards a master’s degree in library science while being employed at the Monroe County Public Library.

She is passionate about social justice and feels the public library is an invaluable asset to every community. She is specializing in children’s and youth services and looks forward to a future career as a children’s librarian.

Haley-Marie Ellegood was awarded the Information & Library Science Student Support Fund. Haley is currently a second-year student in the master of library science program.

She is from a small town in western Kentucky and attended the University of Kentucky for her undergraduate degree, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in history with a minor in political science. Haley is specifically interested in archives and records management, and, after graduation, plans on pursuing a career as an archivist at a museum or some other type of historical institution.

Hannah Ensign-George

Hannah Ensign-George received two scholarships: the BJ Kish Irvine Graduate Scholarship in Art Librarianship, which is awarded to students in fine arts librarianship who demonstrate potential to be leaders in the field and was established

by B.J. Kish Irvine to mark her years of dedication and service as a faculty member and Fine Arts Librarian at IU, and the Keith C. Kuhn Tri-State Scholarship, given to a student from the Tri-State area (southeast Indiana, southwest Ohio, and northern Kentucky). Keith C. Kuhn was a 1976 MLS graduate; he also served as President of the ILS Alumni Board for several years. He was the Head of Public Services in the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH. Ensign-George was a first-year student in the Master of Library Science program at the time she was awarded. (continued on next page)

Austin Frink

Ensign-George, (continued from previous page) completed her undergraduate studies at Centre College, a small liberal arts institution in Danville, Kentucky. There she studied art history and religion, with a focus on cultural heritage protection and cultural patrimony law. After a few years of work and travel, Ensign-George chose to return to school to earn her MLS. She has found the program thus far to be an excellent fit, with the ability to explore her varied interests while working toward her area of specialization.

Ensign-George says, “I am especially interested in art librarianship, digital libraries, and digital humanities. I have always enjoyed multidisciplinary study and see in each of these specializations the ability to bring together different areas of study. After graduation, I am open to jobs in a variety of settings, from academic libraries to corporate institutions.

No matter the setting, I look forward to using the skills and knowledge I learned here at IU.” Austin Frink was awarded the Charles A. and Charles H. Davis Fellowship in Scientific Information, awarded to assist graduate students interested in the study of scientific information. Charles A. Davis headed the Indiana State Police Headquarters Laboratory and, later, the Criminal Investigation Division; he was a pioneer in forensic science. Charles H. Davis has three degrees from IU and studied postgraduate chemistry at the University of Munich on a fellowship awarded by the German government. He was an editor at Chemical Abstracts, served as an academic dean in Canada and in Illinois, and later became a senior fellow in the Department of Information and Library Science at IU. Frink also received the Fry Family Scholarship, which is awarded to graduate students in the Department of

Information and Library Science selected by the ILS Scholarship Committee. This award was established by the five sons of Bernard and June Fry to honor their parents. Dr. Bernard Fry was appointed Dean of the IU Graduate Library School from 1967-1980. Frink obtained his bachelor’s degree in informatics with a cognate in fine arts from Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing in 2012. In the summer between his junior and senior year, Frink secured an internship with the Indianapolis-based nonprofit healthcare organization, Franciscan Alliance. Upon completion of his internship, he was offered a fulltime position as an application programmer that could begin as soon as he finished his degree program. Frink accepted, working part time for Franciscan through his senior year of college. Once at Franciscan Alliance, his skills grew exponentially through real world experience. Initially focused on web design work, he spent his first two years steeped in the development of large corporate website projects. Frink is currently still with Franciscan, and after having been with the company 7 years, he has faced many exciting challenges that have pushed him in various directions professionally, and offered him ample opportunity to expand his skills. Frink says, “I am now the senior software engineer with the title Enterprise Cloud Architect, helping to develop the company’s forward-looking cloud first IT strategy.” Frink returned to Indiana University to continue his education by pursuing the Master of Information Science (MIS) degree. Of his experience, Frink says, “The coursework has been engaging, challenging, and has helped me in my current position already by formalizing much of the tacit knowledge I have gained organically in my job. I’m financing my graduate degree on my

own. This gift helps tremendously, and I truly appreciate it.” Frink graduated in May 2020.

Faith Gorrell has received the Gines Graduate Library Science Scholarship. Gorrell was a first-year master’s student in the Master of Library Science program at the time she was selected for the award. She is specializing in archives and records management, as she wants to be an archivist and has a passion for archival work. Gorrell works for the Moving Image Archive on campus and has worked for the National Archives in the past. She says, “I am so grateful to have been given the chance to continue my studies in the archival field at IU. The support from the Gines Graduate Library Science Scholarship will be invaluable toward helping me to continue my studies so that I may complete my degree by spring 2021 and go on to begin working either for a university or governmental archive after graduation.”

Shannon Grimme has been awarded the Information and Library Science Student Support Fund and the Margaret Griffin Coffin Scholarship, which is awarded to graduate students in the Department of Information and Library Science selected by the ILS Scholarship Committee. Margaret Griffin Coffin was an Assistant Professor Emeritus of Library and Information Science in 1988 when she established this fund for students.

Grimme is a graduate student with academic and professional experience in research, higher education instruction, and practical media production and teaching. She says, “My love of libraries and learning has been lifelong; as an eight-year-old, I tried to apply for a job at my local library ‘reading to little kids’ (I guess I wasn’t ‘little’ myself, then!).” Grimme’s expe-

alumna who, although she earned her Master of Library Science from the University of Denver, wanted to support libraries in her home state of Indiana. After getting her bachelor’s from IU in home economics, Kidwell enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII and served in the WAVES as a pharmacist’s mate. After the war, she enrolled in the library science program in Denver. She moved to Muskegon Heights, MI, in 1948 and served as the senior high school librarian there until her retirement in 1974.

Hinkley is in her last semester of studies at Indiana University, where she is pursuing a double masters in library science and musicology. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Eastern Michigan University. Her work for the Latin American Music Center at Indiana University primarily involved cataloging and processing scores from Latin American composers. She was a 2018 Archival Fellow at the Rutgers Jazz Archive, where she assisted in processing the Bill Anna Hinkley received the Marian Arm- Hughes Collection. Since starting her studies, she has become interested in work focusing on disabilities, particularly “invisible disabilities” such as mental health, and stigma, and how these relate to both professional and patron practices. On receiving her scholarships, Grimme said, “As a returning student and working mom, these scholarships will help to alleviate some of the financial burden that makes it difficult to focus on my studies as intently as I would wish. I am presently torn between a practical librarianship career, potentially as a subject area specialist in a higher education setting, and continuing my research interests through a PhD in Information Science. I look forward to continuing my coursework with the incredible faculty here at ILS!”

Samantha Hyde

Hovind graduated in May 2020 with a Masters of Library Science degree and a specialization in music librarianship. She comes from beautiful Bellingham, WA, where she received her bachelor’s in music history from Western Washington University. Hovind says, “In my career as a librarian, I am interested in pursuing a reference position at an academic institution where I can use the outreach skills that I learned here to share strategies and ideas with smaller music libraries. I’m also interested in pursuing a liaison-librarian position where I can build bridges between libraries, information institutions, and/or departments with special collections in order to facilitate better research in the collections. Financial support from the Department of Information & Library Science has given me opportunities to pursue these career goals in incredible ways. Thanks to ILS and Luddy, I have been able to intern with the Music Department at the Library of Congress, learn about technology in libraries through Makerspaces and using virtual reality, and I am preparing to co-publish my first article.”

Samantha Hyde received the Clayton Shepherd Memorial Fund, which is given to graduate students in the Department of Information and Library Science selected by the ILS Scholarship Committee. The award was established in memory of Associate Professor Shepherd who had been a member of the ILS faculty for 13 years. She also received the Dennis K. Grumling Memorial Award Fund, which was established in honor of Dennis Grumling, a 1984 MLS graduate from IU and the head of Cataloging at De Paul University. (continued on next page)

8 Hyde (continued from previous page) received the award for having excelled in cataloging and for demonstrating promise of success in the profession. Hyde holds a BA from Denison University in dance, history, and Black studies; she went on to work with Colorado Ballet for 4 years, originally as an Outreach Faculty member. In 2014, she became the Education Programs Manager and the Director of Education in 2016. She is currently pursuing a dual master’s degree in library science and African Studies from Indiana University. At IU, she serves as Road Manager for the African American Dance

After being employed as an artist assistant in various studios, Tova was hired as the manager for By Hand Gallery in downtown Bloomington where she oversaw all gallery operations, coordinated over 100 local artists, and acted as a central point in the community that connected artists to customers. She held this position for six and a half years. Lesko graduated in May 2020 with a Master of Information Science.

Lesko is also an accomplished textile artist, having won multiple awards for her original fiber art. She has had her artwork displayed

span topics in computer-mediated communication and computational linguistics including: channel selection, innovation adoption, and computational discourse analysis.

She is currently working on research aimed at understanding the use of multimodal resources, such as Animoji, in technology-mediated interaction as well as, the impact of politeness strategies on conversational outcomes in mobile dating settings.

He plans to work in an academic library after his graduation in May 2020.

Brianna McLaughlin was awarded the Eleanor Kidwell Fellowship. McLaughlin graduated with a Master of Library Science in May 2020. She has lived all over the east

9 coast but calls Normal, IL home. She received her undergraduate degree in history and archaeology at the University of Evansville. While at IU, she had the opportunity to work at libraries all over campus including the Glenn Black Archaeology Lab—James Kellar Library, the Business and SPEA Information Commons, and the Jerome Hall Law Library. She also completed independent archival projects such as Policing Evansville, which is a digitization and digital archive project she began in the summer of 2019 with funding from the Charles B. Shaw fellowship. McLaughlin said, “Graduate school

I am pursuing academic library positions, and I have already started interviewing for positions here at IU!” Mary McSparran received the Kathryn Elizabeth Wiser Scholarship, awarded to graduate students pursuing a degree within the Department of Information and Library Science. McSparran fell in love with special collections while pursuing her BA in English at UNC-Chapel Hill. After completing her MFA in poetry writing from Vanderbilt University, she taught composition, creative writing, and literature in Nashville, TN, before decid-

ing to pursue her dream of working in a special collections library. She made her way into the Nashville library world by volunteering at the Virginia Davis Laskey Library and Archives and at the Vanderbilt University Special Collections Library before finding a position at the Tennessee State Library and Archives. The generous support of the Kathryn Elizabeth Wiser Scholarship is helping make it possible for her to pursue an MLS at Indiana University Bloomington, where she is specializing in rare books & manuscripts in order to obtain her goal of one day working at a university special collections library.

Alyssa Mertka

Alyssa Mertka was awarded the Charles B. Shaw Fellowship and the Information & Library Science Student Support Fund. Mertka is a second-year graduate student in the Masters of Library Science program. She previously graduated from the University of Kentucky with a BA in English and minors in history and Latin. She is pursuing a specialization in rare books and manuscripts librarianship, and she hopes to one day work in special collections at an academic library.

Service has supplied books and related services to libraries since 1959. The company’s founder, Howard N. Lesser, wishes to foster the development of future librarians. Mitchell is pursuing a dual master’s in musicology and library science with an estimated graduation date of May 2021. She moved to Bloomington from Chicago in July of 2018, after graduating from Oklahoma City University in 2014 with a degree in Musical Theater. Mitchell says, “Here in Bloomington, I love to see the concerts and shows that the Jacobs School of Music presents, read (shocker), and hang out with the best cat in the world, Honey−though I might be biased on that front.” (continued on next page)

Katherine Morrison was awarded the Sarah Reed Scholarship. Katherine is currently a Ph.D. student in the Department of Information and Library Science. She studies vernacular and environmental art, documentation, classification, and knowledge organization.

Katherine earned her MLS with a specialization in archives and records management from IU in 2019 and an MA in art history from University of Colorado in 2014. She serves as a Luddy School Ambassador, volunteers at the Indiana University Archives, and sits on the Board of Directors for the Eugene V. Debs Foundation in Terre Haute. Her favorite book is Knockemstiff by Donald Ray Pollock.

Abe Nemom (not pictured) was awarded the Keith C. Kuhn Tri-State Scholarship. Nemon is a Master of Library Science student at Indiana University, specializing in rare books and manuscripts. obtained a Master’s degree in English composition and rhetoric at Wright State University and, while teaching first year composition, studied how students engaging in genre-style analysis of multimodal texts can aid in teaching writing. Nemon has filled a variety of roles on the IU campus and was involved in a joint internship project with the Wylie House Museum and the E. Lingle Craig Preservation Lab inventorying and contextualizing the library of Indiana University’s first head librarian and interim president Theophilus A. Wylie (1810 - 1895). Some of his favorite things to see at the Lilly Library are private press and artist’s books, hand-colored Dutch atlases from the 17th century, and 19th century French cartoonists and illustrators. He hopes one day to work as an outreach and instruction librarian in a rare book library or archive.

Sara Norwood (IUPUI) was awarded the David R. & Dorotha W. Oliver Graduate Scholarship, which benefits students with a record of academic excellence who have an interest in public school librarianship. The scholarship was established by the children of IU alumni David and Dorotha Oliver, 1964 and 1967 graduates, respectively. Sara Norwood is in the 2nd year of the MLIS program at IUPUI. She earned her undergraduate degree in elementary education from IU Bloomington and was a classroom teacher before deciding to enroll in the MLIS program. Norwood is a life-long lover of all things related to the library and can happily spend hours browsing the materials, attending programs, or simply sitting and reading at her local library. She hopes to work in youth services so she can share her enthusiasm about the library with children. She lives in South Bend with her 2 children, ages 10 and 14.

Benjamin Ollen

Benjamin Ollen received the Fry Family Scholarship and the Mabel & Harold Packwood Graduate Scholarship, which is awarded to in-state students enrolled in the MLS degree at IUB, established by former ILS staff member, Sarah P. Burton, in memory of her parents. He also received the Cynthia Duncan Memorial Fellowship, established in honor of Cynthia Duncan, who got her Ph.D. in Information Science in 1974. Benjamin Ollen is a student in the Master of Information Science program and earned his undergraduate degree in economics, cognitive science, and history at Indiana University Bloomington in 2015. While working towards his MIS degree, he has held several professional roles at the university, most recently as a data analyst for University Institutional Research and Reporting. He is also a volunteer at the Friends of the Library bookstore and a member of the group’s board. The support from these awards allowed him to complete his degree in May 2020 and further pursue his interests in information architecture and librarianship.

Emily Ollis received the Information & Library Science Student Support Fund. Ollis is a thirdyear Master of Library Science student. She earned her undergraduate BA at Appalachian State University in English with a focus in critical animal studies. After graduating from IU, she plans to attend an animal studies MA program. Ollis wants to create an animal studies research library, and is excited to be gaining important skills necessary to reach that goal.

From that point, Posso was able to narrow her community service passion to focus on what public libraries can do to serve a community. Public libraries and advocacy for public libraries became her passion, and providing equal access to information as a librarian became her goal. When given the opportunity to participate in a Public Service Announcement (PSA) competition for the Maryland State Police Department, she was excited to enter the contest. Posso’s PSA came in second place and had her video published on the Maryland State Police social media platforms. After completing her Associate of Arts and Sciences with a 3.7 GPA, Posso continued her education at the University of Maine at Augusta and received a Bachelor of Science in information and library science with a 4.0 GPA. In fall 2019, Posso began pursuing her dual masters degrees at Indiana University. Upon completion, Posso will earn a Master in Public Affairs from the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs and an ALA accredited Master of Information Science from the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering. Wendy Spacek received the May Copeland Fellowship. Spacek is a poet studying librarianship at Indiana University. Before seeking her MLS, she earned her MFA in poetry from Indiana University Bloomington.

Born and raised in Indiana, her first book, Psychogynecology, was published by Monster House Press in 2015. Her work can be found at poets.org, The Portland Review, and more. She has received numerous honors for her poetry, including two Vera Meyer Strube Academy of American Poets Awards and the Katharine Bakeless Nason Scholarship to the Bread Loaf Environmental Writers Conference. When not writing poetry or working in libraries, she co-facilitates a creative writing class in the county jail, plans poetry readings with her friends in the Tender Heart Club, and hikes with her dog, Sunny.

Brian Watson was awarded the Margaret Griffin Coffin Scholarship and the Janice Kilner Egloff Scholarship, which is given to a non-resident student in the Department of Information and Library Science selected by the ILS Scholarship Committee. Janice Egloff was a 1978 MLS graduate from IU. Watson is an archivist, metadata wrangler, and historian of sexuality and the book. They serve as the Archivist-Historian of the American Psychological Association’s CNM Taskforce, on the board of Homosaurus Linked Data Vocabulary, and worked as an archivist at the Kinsey Institute Library and Special Collections. They are interested in queer classification in libraries and archives, and long histories of sexuality and censorship. Watson holds a MA in history & culture from Drew University, completed a MLS degree in May 2020 focusing on archives, digital humanities, and metadata at Indiana University Bloomington, and was accepted to a Ph.D. program. Watson has published a book on the history of obscenity and has a number of forthcoming publications.

Vernarsky moved to Bloomington with her cat, Franny, where she is a master’s student in musicology and library science.

Jerome Williams received the Information & Library Science Student Support Fund. Jerome graduated from Indiana University Bloomington in 2015 with degrees in telecommunications, philosophy, and religious studies. Before returning to graduate school, he worked in a variety of roles, such as community tree planter, production assistant for a public television station, security receptionist for a Fortune 500 technology company, and audiovisual technician for a Chicago hotel. Williams says, “While I’ve had wonderful and unique experiences working in different industries, I have also continued to run into the same kinds of organizational issues, namely in the forms of miscommunication, oversimplification of problems,

and technological illiteracy.” Determined to figure out a way to improve shared understanding between people through technology, he decided to join Indiana University’s Master of Information Science program. His key interests in the program are information architecture and complex systems. “Information architecture is all about organizing information in a way that best suits the user’s goals and comprehension, while complex systems helps you understand how numerous factors can contribute to a particular problem space. I feel like the world is becoming more complicated, and we need better structures in place to help the general public become more comfortable and literate about that complexity. However, these aren’t the types of skills that are easily learned through online tutorials or self-study; they really require the full resources of an institution like Indiana University. Unfortunately, gaining access to these resources is also quite expensive; therefore, I would truly like to thank all of the donors for their contributions.”

Alexandra Wingate was awarded the Information & Library Science Student Support Fund. Wingate is a graduate student from Fairfax, Virginia, who entered the MLS program in spring 2020. She earned a BA summa cum laude at the College of William and Mary, double majoring in Hispanic studies and linguistics and holds an MA with distinction from the University of London in the history of the book.

Her previous research for her undergraduate and master’s theses explored the private libraries and book trade in early modern Navarre, Spain, using the methods of cultural studies, book history, and digital humanities.

More broadly, she is interested in the book history of the Spanish-speaking world during the medieval and early modern periods. When

not studying or researching, Wingate enjoys knitting, spinning yarn on her spinning wheel, cooking for friends—and, of course, reading. With the generous support of this award, she intends to complete the rare books and manuscripts specialization within IU’s MLS program and further explore her interest in digital humanities. Her previous experiences in Hispanic studies and book history will combine with the skills and knowledge gained during this MLS degree to help her to begin her career as a rare books librarian at either a US or international institution upon graduation.

Shengnan Yang was awarded the Sarah Reed Scholarship and the Rob Kling Social Informatics Fellowship, which is awarded to doctoral students in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering who are pursuing research in Social Informatics and are interested in conducting critical studies on the impact and consequences of computerization, the internet, or digital media on individuals, organizations, or society. This award was established in honor of the late Rob Kling by his widow. Rob Kling was a Professor in the Information and Library Science School at IU and was the Director of IU’s Center for Social Informatics. Shengnan is a Ph.D. student in the ILS department. Before pursuing an academic career, she worked as an IT consultant in Accenture Greater China. Her particular research interests include social and ethical issues related to the use of new technologies, especially the impact of ICTs on social change and development in different contexts. Focusing on the role of technology in the nonprofit sector, her dissertation studies the effects of digital tools on the social world by examining nonprofit organizations. She employs a mixed-methods approach to conduct research, including

qualitative interviews, quantitative surveys, and big data analysis. Right now, she has already completed the majority of data collection fieldwork for the dissertation and is in the final stage of the dissertation writing phase.

Stephen Yeager received the May Copeland Fellowship. Yeager said, “My road to IU and my Master of Library Science degree is not as traditional as others. I started college when I was forty years old, after I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Prior to that, I spent most of my career working outdoors doing physical labor, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I did my undergraduate work at the University of Wyoming, where I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history with a minor in museum studies. When I was diagnosed with MS, I took three months to determine what career I could do and what I would be passionate about, and this led me to library science. It was during a book history class at UW that I was introduced to rare books, namely a 5,000 year old cuneiform tablet.

I hope to one day help others to experience the passion and love for rare books that I have.

During my first two semesters at IU, I have had the privilege to take two courses taught by Joel Silver, the Director of the Lilly Library, who has taught me a great deal about rare books. Joel and all faculty at IU work hard to train the librarians of tomorrow. I look forward to my next two semesters at IU and what my future may bring.”
