Summer’s Heat Waves and Their Effect on Humans

Summers heat waves effect on human

As the season of holiday begins it marks the onset of hot humid summers in  Goa. Here is the point where everyone in Goa is affected by summer heat  waves

One of the biggest hazard of weather that affects us during the summer is  heat. Many people do not realise how deadly the heat can be and that is the  reason we sometimes call summer heat as a silent killer.

The National weather Service as a part of its mission for protecting life of  human as well as animals on earth, has a measure of how the hot weather  feels our body. We need to measure the heat index which tells us the humidity  and temperature of body.

Take for instance, the rising temperature of Goa today is 33.C and humidity is  64%

Now we need to calculate the heat index depending on the humidity of our  external environment.

If heat index is 90 – 105 deg Consequences faced are sun stroke, heat cramps,  heat exhaustion with prolonged exposure to sun.

If heat index ranges from 105 – 130 deg C, sunstroke , heat stroke , muscle  cramps, heat exhaustion.

If heat index is above 130.C there can be possible chances of heart stroke .

Heat disorders are associated with decrease in one’s ability to shed heat by  sweating shedding water from body or salt imbalance caused by body exceeds  the level of heat removed from body.

Some common heat disorders that usually one faces is

1. Sunburn: the symptoms include redness in the form of rash on skin  followed by pain severity is seen as swelling in skin, heat blisters, fever,  headaches.

2. Heat cramps: one often notices muscular pain and spasms due to heavy exertion specially the abdominal and leg muscles and it can be very  painful

3. Heat exhaustion : Due to prolonged and profuse sweating the body loses  large quantities of water and salt when these salts and water are not  replaced , blood circulation gets diminished affecting heart ,brain and

lungs with heat exhaustion. sweat does not evaporate due to high  humidity ; hence body is not cooled properly.

4. Heat stroke. here play the role of temperature control system which  produces sweat to cool down our body.if this control system stops ,the  body temperature increases which results in brain damage and  ultimately resulting in death if body does not cool down quickly.

Symptoms include red dry skin ;change in conscious non ,weak pulse, rapid  shallow breathing ;body temperature ,palpitation, dizziness ,headache ,  nausea and vomiting.

How to protect oneself during the summers from heat waves.

1) Drink sufficient quantity of water throught out the day.

2) Hydrate yourself with sufficient quantity of non- drink , non-aerated  drinks these includes nimbu pani, kokum sherbat , tender cocnut water ,  fruit juices.

3) Consuming a lot of fruits, vegetables in form of salad or fruit compote  adds to benefit.

4) Wear clothes that give you comfortable and relaxing feeling. cotton or  blend of cotton.

5) Avoid getting into strenuous exercise and activities during peak heat time  rather reschedule during cooler time of day.

6) Stay in cool places avoid moving out in hot temperature when  temperature is at peak.

Now a days with a lot of influence from social media one needs to know  how much amount of fluids intake one should take.

Always read your body, the water requirement for every individual is  different the amount of water intake of person depends on the fluid or  water and salt lost by body inform of sweat.

Stay cool stay safe and enjoy summers
