07 Emerging India Foresees Rise of Hospitality-Driven Economic Growth

Introduction

Goa, the tiniest state on the western coast of India, boasts golden pristine beaches, palmfringed avenues, flavourful food, delicious Portuguese-influenced sweets, and warm, hospitable people. Also known as the Ibiza of India for its partying. A tropical paradise of flora and fauna, from the very famous 'almi' (mushrooms) endemic to its forests, that grow only on the red mud anthills, to the solar prawns that are fished immediately after the monsoons, Goa is unique. Tourists are also attracted to Goa for its cultural heritage - from the famous old Portuguese churches like Se Cathedral in Old Goa, the 16th Century Safa Masjid in Ponda and Shree Mangesha Temple in Mardol, the legendary Arvalem or Pandava Caves where the Pandavas of the Mahabharat fame lived, to its two unique festivalsCarnival and Shigmo. Goa plays host to many festivals - the International Film Festival of India that promotes cinema, the Serendipity Art Festival, Sunburn Music Festival, The Grape Escapade to name a few. To showcase this varied heritage of culture, art, tradition, food, and people, in 2015 ItsGoa was born. The main aim was to make it the premier portal for all things Goa. We were able to showcase Goa like never before. Soon our blog-based website transcended the virtual space, with the ItsGoa magazine – a sought-after resource for visitors to Goa from countries like Norway, Germany, UK, USA, UAE, etc.

Vaibhav G. Salgaonkar, aka Artbybu, is a self-taught Goan illustrator whose heartfelt sketches document culture, heritage, and everyday life, blending activism, storytelling, and art to preserve Goa’s fading memories.

Article by: Team ItsGoa Images by: Vaibhav G. Salgaonkar

In a quiet studio nestled somewhere in Goa, an artist captures the spirit of the land, not through grandiose strokes, but through honest lines, delicate water colours, and heartfelt observation. Vaibhav G. Salgaonkar, popularly known as Mr. Bu or Artbybu, is not your conventional illustrator. With a background in Chemistry and Biotechnology and a deep-rooted love for his homeland, Vaibhav’s journey from science to sketching is a narrative as layered and soulful as his art itself.

From Science to Sketches: A Transformational Journey

Vaibhav’s academic path began with a Bachelor’s in Chemistry from St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa, followed by a Master’s in Biotechnology from Goa University. Like many during the COVID-19 lockdown, he found himself re-evaluating life and purpose. Confined indoors and grieving the loss of his mother to cancer, he turned to art as both therapy and expression. What began as a pastime evolved into a calling, one that fused creativity with conscience.

His early illustrations during the pandemic addressed

caricatures and vibrant visual protest art, he gained significant traction on social media, using illustration as a powerful tool for activism. This period marked his transition from aesthetic art to purposeful art.

Carving a Niche in Goa’s Cultural Canvas

Over the years, Vaibhav’s work has shifted focus toward Goan culture, heritage, and everyday life. From sketching iconic structures and local festivals to capturing the warmth of a street-side chaiwala, his illustrations have become love letters to Goa’s quieter, often overlooked corners. His art lives on not only in sketchbooks but also on coasters, tote bags, fridge magnets, and key-chains, allowing people to carry a piece of Goa wherever they go.

The moniker Artbybu stems from a childhood nickname—“Bu”—a derivative of “Vaibhav” coined by college friends and quickly embraced by family and mentors alike. Today, it represents a brand that stands for sincerity, storytelling, and soulful illustration.

Self-Taught and Emotionally Tuned

While Vaibhav is largely self-taught, his growth has been fueled by persistence, observation, and a love for visual storytelling. As a child, he looked up to his elder brother, an artist himself, who nurtured Vaibhav’s passion by gifting him art supplies, books, and encouragement. Comic book characters like Suppandi, Shikari Shambu, and Tantri the Mantri sparked his interest early on, while legendary figures such as R.K. Laxman and Goan caricaturist Alexyz later shaped his stylistic evolution.

Vaibhav’s signature style is a blend of realism and emotional sketching, bold ink lines, layered textures, and soft washes of water colour bring life to his subjects. His work is grounded in the raw, real-time emotions of the everyday, blending detailed observation with expressive storytelling.

Mediums and Method

Vaibhav prefers pen and ink for its immediacy and honesty. Water colours, once intimidating, have now become his favourite medium, especially since joining Urban Sketchers Goa in 2023. The group introduced him to live sketching and deepened his appreciation for capturing fleeting moments on location. He carries a compact sketch kit everywhere, ready to record the world as it unfolds around him.

For realism and portraiture, he leans on digital tools like Procreate. Though he has dabbled in oil painting, his primary comfort zone lies in the fluidity and spontaneity of ink and water colour.

His creative process begins with immersive observation. Be it an architectural element, a festival, or a human expression, he first captures the subject’s essence in rough lines, then layers it with mood and emotion through colour. The result is often imperfect by design,a conscious reminder that life, like art, is never static.

Among his most memorable moments are setting up his first pop-up stall on his birthday in 2022, receiving recognition in local newspapers, and returning to his alma mater, St. Xavier’s College, as a panelist at an intercollegiate event. One of his favourite live sketching memories includes capturing the Stuti Choir performance in real time during the Goa Arts and Literature Festival, a testament to his speed, precision, and deep connection with his subjects.

But the journey has not been without hurdles. One of the most persistent challenges for Vaibhav has been navigating the fine line between passion and practicality. In a place where the art scene is still emerging, earning consistent recognition and livelihood through art remains a constant effort. Selfdoubt, artistic rejection, and the pressures of social media metrics have all played their part. Yet, support from friends, family, and kind strangers continues to

Archiving Goa, One Sketch at a Time

Currently, Vaibhav is working on a research-driven art project that documents Goa’s unique oyster shell windows, an architectural feature fading with time. By speaking to locals, sketching on-site, and exploring the stories behind these designs, he hopes to revive awareness and appreciation for this cultural heritage. The project will culminate in a zine blending illustrations, history, and reflections.

Looking forward, Vaibhav dreams of expanding his documentation of Goa into a full-scale illustrated book or exhibition. He’s also eager to travel more, collaborate with fellow artists, and continue sketching stories that connect deeply with people.

Beyond the Sketchbook

Outside of art, Vaibhav finds joy in nature, journaling along the Goan coast, photographing marine life, café-hopping, music, and spontaneous jam sessions with friends.

These simple pleasures often translate into inspiration for his pieces, he is, after all, an artist of lived experience.

A Legacy of Feeling

Vaibhav Salgaonkar’s legacy is not one of grand exhibitions or viral reels, but of quiet, persistent archiving—of memories, moods, and moments often forgotten.

His illustrated souvenirs are not just merchandise; they are vessels of nostalgia and stories in motion. He wants to be remembered not just for the finesse of his linework, but for the emotion behind every sketch.

As he puts it, “I hope my work becomes a quiet form of archiving, a visual journal of what once was, what still is, and what we risk losing.” Through Artbybu, Vaibhav is not just sketching images, he’s sketching the soul of a place and its people, one heartfelt stroke at a time.

Frazer Andrade

Frazer Andrade, a pharmacist-turned-journalist, preserves Goa’s heritage through conservation, a vast antique collection, and fearless reporting, aiming to safeguard traditions, art, and history for future generations.

Frazer Andrade’s journey is anything but conventional. Born and raised in Goa, his academic beginnings followed a scientific path—completing schooling at Loyola High School, Margão, higher secondary at Rosary Higher Secondary School, Navelim, and later earning both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Pharmacy from Goa College of Pharmacy, Panjim. He even published two pharmaceutical research papers in international journals. Yet, it was his deep-rooted love for Goa’s art, culture, and heritage that pulled him away from the laboratories and into a lifelong mission of conservation, research, and journalism.

After briefly working in the pharmaceutical industry, Frazer shifted to art conservation, interning at the Museum of Christian Art in Old Goa. He later worked with a private art conservation firm in Mumbai and studied conservation at the Prince of Wales Museum. Today, he serves as a Senior Sub Editor with O Heraldo, one of Goa’s oldest newspapers, where he contributes features that spotlight Goa’s overlooked history, traditions, and heritage.

Choosing Journalism Over Science

Though pushed into the science stream by family expectations, Frazer’s heart was always drawn to Goa’s Portuguese-influenced heritage and museums. His entry into journalism stemmed from a desire to

historic structures, and cultural practices that were vanishing too quickly. By age 18, he had already begun writing articles, convinced that Goa’s true history—often suppressed or ignored—needed to be voiced.

Crafting a Unique Journalistic Style

Frazer’s style is shaped by passion and fearlessness. He describes it as the “Frazer style”—an unapologetic approach grounded in facts, ethics, and an unwavering love for Goa. His reporting focuses on areas such as Indo-Portuguese art, local traditions, indigenous culture, and historic Goan achievements. He believes in writing honestly, even if the subjects he covers do not please everyone.

Among his most memorable stories are “Sailing to Victory: The Conquest of Goa”, which sheds light on why November 25 was once considered Goa’s first liberation day, and “Afonso de Albuquerque: The Unrecognized Protector of Hindus in 16th Century Goa”, which challenged prevailing narratives. His work is always anchored in credible sources, referencing books by respected authors and peerreviewed journals, while also relying on oral documentation from locals.

The Collector and Conservator

Frazer’s contributions extend far beyond journalism. Since 2012, he has been actively preserving Goan antiques and since 2014, Christian art. Today, his personal collection includes more than 700 rare artifacts dating from the 17th to the early 20th century—crafted from wood, ivory, bone, metal, textiles, and leather.

His passion was sparked after a visit to the Prince of Wales Museum in Mumbai, followed by his father’s observation that many similar objects could be found at home. Soon, Frazer began exploring cupboards and trunks, uncovering forgotten treasures.

The turning point came when he discovered discarded religious statues outside his chapel, a Common practice among Indians who considered damaged religious artifacts unlucky. Determined to save these objects, he began restoring and safeguarding them.

Among his prized possessions is an 18th-century sandalwood votive casket, blending Indo-Portuguese and Sri Lankan artistry, and a processional textile banner from the same era.

He also treasures leather-bound missals, wooden statues, and a tiny two-inch figure of Saint Anne that once belonged to his grandfather. Each artifact holds not just historical but personal meaning, often gifted by friends and families who recognized the value of his mission.

Frazer emphasizes that Goan Christian art reflects a unique confluence of influences—Portuguese, Mughal, Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, and East Asian. From Mughal-style jali and Japanese Nanban lacquer work to Chitari furniture and motifs of native flora and fauna, these objects narrate stories of faith, creativity, and cross-cultural collaboration.

Challenges Along the Way

The road has not been easy. Financial constraints, lack of institutional support, and limited storage space have made his work a constant struggle. His parents, though offering some financial help in the early years, never truly encouraged his vision. Many in Goa’s art circles have dismissed him as a hoarder or even ridiculed his efforts. Yet, his resolve remains unshaken. Supported by close friends like Fr. Avinash Rebello, the late Fr. Nascimento, Kevin Rebello, Bosco P. Afonso, and Shallet Furtado, he continues his mission, driven by a simple belief: “If I cannot die for Goa, I will live for her.”

Looking Ahead

Frazer’s ultimate dream is to establish a dedicated museum or gallery where his collection can be displayed and studied. He also envisions publishing a detailed catalogue that documents each artifact’s history, ensuring it becomes a resource for scholars, students, and heritage lovers. Beyond preservation, he hopes to inspire future generations to care for the heritage they inherit, to value it not merely as objects but as living memories passed down through time.

Beyond Work

Outside his professional and conservation pursuits, Frazer enjoys singing classical liturgical and secular music, gardening, cycling, and curating antiques. He also manages the social media platforms IndoPortuguese & Goan Christian Art, where he spreads awareness about heritage conservation. Through his ‘Green God’ initiative, he advocates for eco-friendly religious sculptures.

A Voice for Goa’s Heritage

Frazer Andrade is more than a journalist or collector —he is a guardian of Goa’s layered past. His work reflects resilience, passion, and a sense of duty to preserve traditions for the future. For him, heritage is not just history; it is a legacy borrowed from generations yet to come, one that must be returned intact. His journey serves as both an inspiration and a reminder: preserving culture is not a choice, but a responsibility.

In the tranquil landscapes of Goa, where nature breathes life into every corner, Tina Fernandes has found her voice. A poet, storyteller, and passionate author, Tina’s work is an ode to life, imagination, and the simple yet profound beauty of the world around us.

From Dreams to Reality: The Journey of an Author

Tina Fernandes completed her Bachelor of Arts from Rosary College, Navelim, Goa, but her passion for writing was ignited long before her academic journey.

Inspired by her mother in childhood, Tina began writing short poems for herself, exploring the depth of emotions and the wonders of nature. Her dream of becoming an author remained tucked in her heart for years, waiting for the right moment.

The pandemic became her opportunity to turn that dream into reality. It was during this challenging time that Tina co-authored a short story for the anthology “Engraved Words”, a collection of positive stories. Encouraged by this success, she continued to pursue writing more seriously.

Today, she stands proudly as the author of her first solo poetry collection, “Whispers of the Heart: Beyond Imaginations”, published by BookLeaf Publications.

Available as a paperback on Amazon and as an eBook, this collection reflects Tina’s unique blend of life, nature, and fanciful imagination, transporting readers into realms of wonder and introspection.

A Style Rooted in Life and Imagination

Tina’s writing style is deeply personal. Her poems often explore the relationship between human emotions and nature, adding an imaginative touch that takes readers on a journey to a fabled land.

Inspired by great literary figures like Emily Dickinson, whose slant rhyme style fascinated her, Tina enjoys crafting verses that balance rhythm and meaning. Among Dickinson’s works, “Hope is the Thing with Feathers” holds a special place in her heart.

Her literary interests don’t end there. Tina is an avid reader of Sidney Sheldon’s suspense novels, having devoured titles like “Nothing Lasts Forever” and “Game of Life”. She also cherishes the adventurous stories of Ruskin Bond, finding joy in revisiting his timeless tales.

Overcoming Challenges with Patience and Persistence

Balancing family life and writing is Tina’s greatest challenge. She explains that writing requires time, patience, and a peaceful space—each poem or story demands thought, phrasing, rhyming, and reflection. Yet, she considers this struggle worthwhile, as it helps her channel her thoughts into creative expression.

Her biggest achievement so far was completing her poetry book through a “21 Days Write Angle Writing Challenge”, a disciplined approach that transformed her ideas into a proud published work. When asked about her creative process, Tina believes deadlines and audience expectations are not barriers but frameworks that help creativity flourish. She emphasizes the importance of research and factchecking, especially while drafting stories, ensuring

Looking Ahead: New Stories in the Making

Currently, Tina is crafting a fictional story about a woman named Margaret, set in the 19th century, focusing on family life. Her goal is to make it as realistic as possible, marking her first attempt at writing a full-length story. Her thoughts, experiences, and motivations fuel her writing habit, driving her to continue evolving as an author.

Connecting with Readers in the Digital Era

One of the most rewarding aspects of Tina’s journey has been the ability to connect directly with her readers through social media platforms. Unlike traditional publishing models, she enjoys real-time conversations with people who appreciate her work, allowing her to learn what resonates and how to adapt. From posts and reels to stories and messages, Tina actively promotes her work, making her voice

Tina’s advice to budding writers is simple yet profound:

“Write your heart out. Never stop writing. The process may be challenging, but it brings a unique sense of freedom and achievement. Remember, the most important creations happen in the quiet solitude of your writing desk.”

A Nature Lover at Heart

Beyond writing, Tina finds peace in the embrace of nature. A travel enthusiast and avid gardener, she believes that nature offers solace and inspiration—a recurring theme in her work.

Her dedication to writing stems from a deep-rooted passion, supported by her husband, who remains her greatest motivation and strongest supporter.

The stage saw a wide mix of performances ranging from music, poetry exploring relationships, modernday experiences, and an Urdu poem on coincidences and living in the present. Each of the 17 performers interpreted the theme “It’s About Time!” in their works, sharing real experiences, stories and poems, leaving the audience in awe.

The conversations that followed the performances lent a special edge to the evening, with participants sharing their thoughts behind their pieces, and the audience reflecting on their own lives and stories. Closing the night was el.trio (Rauf, Bento and

voices together, much like the parent TEDxPanaji event. Speaking about the thought behind this event, organiser and curator of TEDxPanaji Ravi Kambhoj, said, “The TEDxPanaji xPERIENCES Open Mic is all about discovering talent within our local communities. Goa is full of hidden voices— storytellers, poets, musicians, comedians—who just need the right space to be heard. By creating these platforms, we’re not only celebrating creativity but also nurturing a culture where everyday people can inspire, connect and spark ideas worth spreading,”

An independently organised TED event, TEDxPanaji helps build spaces in Goa that spark creativity, share ideas, and inspire change. Collaborating in this spirit, Zeitgeist Goa, a collective of writers, poets, educators, artists and performers, lent its vibrancy to the evening.

The experience was further made memorable with the welcoming atmosphere of Carpe Diem Art Gallery, a venue known for supporting local art and cultural initiatives. Together, the collaborators turned a Sunday evening into a true celebration of expression, laughter, and community.

Emerging India Foresees Rise of Hospitality-Driven Economic Growth

In today’s economic landscape, hospitality has emerged as a key driver of growth. With the support of initiatives like Startup India and Make in India, MSMEs in hotels, restaurants and tourism have boosted the economy. While regulatory hurdles, funding gaps and infrastructure issues challenge smaller cities, the projected hospitality growth of seven to nine per cent in FY25 according to the latest report by ICRA (Investment Information and Credit Rating Agency) is a signal for a decade of opportunity for innovators creating sustainable, multi-sector solutions.

The nation’s entrepreneurial ecosystem is seeing a transformation as new business leaders are viewing India as a land of opportunity, but also a country that requires entrepreneurial solutions.

India, with its population of 1.4 billion, is a hub for potential business growth, especially in the hospitality sector. The rise of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which includes hospitality industry components, like hotels, restaurants, travel agencies and tour operators, employing crores of individuals, has significantly shaped the economy.

Homestays are gaining popularity in particular, in tourism-oriented states like Goa, with many families opening up their homes to visitors, offering them an authentic and cultural experience of the state.

Combine to Succeed

A broader trend in Indian entrepreneurship is the growth of platform-building instead of isolated products. This, in turn, integrates multiple industries to create sustainable, mutually reinforcing ecosystems. Entrepreneurs should focus on hotel–café franchises, which create dual-revenue hubs. Hotels benefit from occupancy income, while cafés generate daily foot traffic. This combination eradicates seasonal risks. Pairing strong hotel brands

with well-known cafés creates instant consumer trust and higher returns for investors.

Gig Power

One of the most significant shifts in recent years is the changing mindset of young Indians. They are moving away from traditional job-seeking to creating jobs themselves, for example, companies like Zomato and Ola.

According to NITI Aayog, the gig workforce in India is projected to expand to 23.5 million workers by 2029-30. In hospitality, this growth is visible in freelance chefs, tour guides, event caterers and ondemand housekeeping staff, as well as food delivery platforms like Swiggy and Zomato.

Such arrangements allow workers to engage in specific tasks or projects, rather than long-term, fixed positions, thus reducing the company’s overhead costs while offering flexible opportunities.

Government initiatives such as Make in India, Digital India and Startup India have further boosted the momentum of innovation and investment. The Bhartiya Skill Development University ensures that hospitality training meets international standards, preparing youth for careers both in India and abroad.

According to Startup India, out of 1.59 lakh DPIIT (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) recognised startups, 1497 startups belong to the travel and tourism sector.

Taking up Challenges

Multi-sector entrepreneurship comes with its challenges, like navigating diverse regulatory landscapes. A hospitality venture might require separate approvals from tourism, municipal and environmental authorities, while a maritime enterprise demands compliance with coastal zone regulations and port trust guidelines.

Funding constraints and limited exposure to international markets remain hurdles for many young businesses in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Infrastructure

gaps in smaller cities often slow growth. In many Tier 2 and Tier 3 regions, entrepreneurs face inconsistent internet connectivity, limited cargo transport options or outdated warehousing facilities, making it harder to scale operations quickly.

Optimistic Outlook

Nevertheless, the revenues of the Indian hospitality industry are expected to grow by seven to nine percent in the financial year 2024-25 and six to eight percent in FY26, over the high base of FY24, according to the latest report by ICRA. The hospitality industry in Goa, one of the most popular beach and nightlife tourism destinations in India where I am based out of, mirrors this trend, with

steady increases in tourist arrivals and registered hotels. According to the India Brand Equity Foundation, tourism in Goa directly contributes 16 per cent to the state’s GDP and employs 35 per cent of its population.

If the current trajectory continues across India, the coming decade will be driven by innovators and entrepreneurs who understand that the most sustainable enterprises are those that solve problems across society and business.
