Introduction Goa, the tiniest state on the western coast of India, boasts golden pristine beaches, palmfringed avenues, flavourful food, delicious Portuguese-influenced sweets, and warm, hospitable people. Also known as the Ibiza of India for its partying. A tropical paradise of flora and fauna, from the very famous 'almi' (mushrooms) endemic to its forests, that grow only on the red mud anthills, to the solar prawns that are fished immediately after the monsoons, Goa is unique. Tourists are also attracted to Goa for its cultural heritage - from the famous old Portuguese churches like Se Cathedral in Old Goa, the 16th Century Safa Masjid in Ponda and Shree Mangesha Temple in Mardol, the legendary Arvalem or Pandava Caves where the Pandavas of the Mahabharat fame lived, to its two unique festivals - Carnival and Shigmo. Goa plays host to many festivals - the International Film Festival of India that promotes cinema, the Serendipity Art Festival, Sunburn Music Festival, The Grape Escapade to name a few. To showcase this varied heritage of culture, art, tradition, food, and people, in 2015 ItsGoa was born. The main aim was to make it the premier portal for all things Goa. We were able to showcase Goa like never before. Soon our blogbased website transcended the virtual space, with the ItsGoa magazine – a sought-after resource for visitors to Goa from countries like Norway, Germany, UK, USA, UAE, etc.

For Omar de Loiola Pereira, music has never been limited to performance. It has been a way of understanding, celebrating and sharing Goa’s distinctive cultural identity. A vocalist, guitarist, arranger, choral conductor and musical director, Omar has spent more than four decades immersed in music, drawing naturally from the multilingual and multicultural environment in which he was raised. Today, through Omar de Loiola Pereira & the SFG Ensemble, he brings together English, Portuguese, Konkani and Spanish music, creating performances that move comfortably between traditional Goan repertoire, Latin influences, English retro and contemporary interpretations.
The ensemble, whose name stands for Sounds From Goa, is the latest evolution of a musical journey that has taken several forms over the years. What began as a trio called Harmonique, followed by Entre Nós, gradually developed into the present ensemble. Along the way, Omar has worked with musicians and vocalists including Efigenia Miranda e Sa, Nadia Rebelo, violinist Selwyn Menezes, keyboardist Nigel

The effort extends beyond concert stages through Cantaram for the Community, an outreach initiative undertaken with Communicare Trust and Leaxan Freitas. The programme introduced school students across Goa to Goan composers and their music. The response revealed an unexpected level of curiosity among young listeners, many of whom were encountering several of these songs for the first time. Some even became interested in learning and performing the music themselves, demonstrating how exposure can create a new connection with an older musical tradition.
Sounds From Goa and the Heritage Home Concert
The idea of presenting music within Goa’s traditional homes had long been a personal dream for Omar, inspired in part by his own ancestral residence. During the Covid-19 lockdowns, that vision took an unexpected first step when he was invited to perform an online concert for a corporate audience.

What began with small celebrations gradually became a regular part of her life. The microphone, initially a platform for a passion, eventually became the foundation of a profession.
Finding Her Calling
Nicole’s transition into professional emceeing was supported strongly by her family. Her parents consistently encouraged her to believe in her abilities, giving her the confidence to pursue opportunities even when the path was uncertain.
Nicole Maciel Sequeira Nicole Maciel Sequeira, professionally known as Emcee Nicole, has built her career around a simple yet powerful idea: an event should be more than a gathering; it should become an experience people remember. With over a decade in the events industry, her journey has grown from volunteering as a young parish emcee to hosting weddings, corporate events, conferences, children's celebrations and destination occasions, while also creating customised décor, activities, gifting and complete event experiences.
From Parish Stages to the Professional World
Nicole’s journey began in 2013, when she volunteered as an emcee with the youth at Immaculate Conception Parish in Panaji. Those early opportunities introduced her to the stage and sparked a lasting love for entertaining audiences. Three years later, an unexpected opportunity gave that passion a new direction.
At just 19, Nicole was asked to host a 21st birthday celebration. Despite being young herself, she took on the challenge and, by her own account, the event went well. More importantly, it gave her the confidence to pursue emceeing further.
For a period, she balanced emceeing with a career as a teacher. Teaching helped her develop qualities that would later prove invaluable on stage, including patience, communication and the ability to understand and work with different personalities. Yet, she continued to feel that events were where she truly belonged.
After marriage, the encouragement of her husband Jude, parents, in-laws and sister gave her the confidence to take a bigger step. By God’s blessings and graces, things really worked out for the best, giving her the strength to commit herself fully to the events industry and turn a long-standing passion into a professional pursuit.
Today, Nicole hosts a diverse range of occasions, from social celebrations and luxury weddings to conferences, corporate events and team-building activities for multinational companies. Her work has also taken her beyond Goa, including outstation events in Sawantwadi.
More Than Just an Emcee
Over the years, Nicole’s role has expanded significantly. What started as professional hosting has evolved into creating complete event experiences tailored to individual clients and occasions.
Her offerings now extend to customised décor, entertainment, children's activities, kiddie table setups, customised gifting, corporate team-building activities and complete event packages.

Making Every Celebration Come Alive
Making Every Celebration Come Alive

Her focus is on participation rather than simply addressing a crowd. Games, interaction, humour and spontaneous moments are woven into the programme while maintaining structure and ensuring that the event progresses smoothly. For her, a successful celebration is one where guests feel involved, included and comfortable enough to laugh, interact and become part of the occasion.
Creating Joy Through Connection
The people she meets remain one of Nicole’s favourite aspects of the profession. She enjoys making audiences smile and transforming a room of individual guests into an engaged group sharing the same moment. Every occasion introduces her to new personalities and stories, while the constant interaction has also contributed to her own growth.
Creating Moments Beyond The Mic By bringing different elements together, she can help clients move from an initial idea to a more cohesive celebration.
This evolution reflects her understanding of what modern clients seek. Rather than simply taking the microphone and following a standard format, Nicole works to understand a client's vision and contribute creatively to the overall experience. Her role has consequently grown into that of a host, creator, organiser and experience-builder.
Among the most rewarding moments are those when she sees clients genuinely enjoying their celebrations and knows that her contribution has helped make the occasion more memorable. Her approach is therefore rooted in connection. The microphone may be her primary tool, but understanding people is what allows her to use it effectively.
Reading the Room
For Nicole, effective emceeing begins with understanding the audience. She believes there is no universal formula for creating the right atmosphere, because every occasion has its own personality.
A corporate gathering calls for a different approach from a wedding, while a children's party requires an entirely different level of energy and spontaneity. Nicole takes into consideration the audience, occasion and personality of the client before determining how she will approach the event.

an activity he enjoyed; it was a space where he could express his ideas and imagination. He regularly participated in school-level and All-Goa drawing competitions until Class 12.
These competitions became an important part of his formative years, encouraging him to observe closely, experiment with ideas, work within limitations and develop the discipline required to translate an idea onto paper. More importantly, they gave him the confidence to recognise art as a serious pursuit rather than simply a childhood hobby. His mother and art teacher played significant roles in nurturing this interest. His teacher recognised his potential and encouraged him to participate, experiment and trust his abilities. The experience left him with a lesson that continues to guide his work: an artist should never stop learning.
That philosophy has become particularly meaningful now that he teaches. Having once benefited from encouragement himself, Prasanna strives to create an environment where his students feel comfortable exploring ideas, making mistakes and developing

The COVID-19 pandemic, followed by an injury, resulted in a gap of nearly three years in his creative practice.
For an artist, an extended absence from creative work can be difficult. The interruption brought uncertainty and made him question whether he could return to the enthusiasm and momentum he had once experienced. Yet the pause ultimately became a period of reflection.
His return to art began gradually during recovery, and one particular work became a defining moment: a portrait of Rakhandar Bodgeshwar.
Rakhandar Bodgeshwar and the Return to Art
The portrait of Rakhandar Bodgeshwar holds deep personal significance for Prasanna. Created while he was recovering and attempting to reconnect with his artistic side, the work represented far more than the

familiar surroundings and adapting to a new environment while committing himself to his education.
The experience also came with practical challenges. Art education demands considerable investment in materials, time and practice, and Prasanna took on side work to support himself and manage the cost of his studies and supplies. Balancing these responsibilities strengthened his independence and perseverance.
The years in Maharashtra shaped him not only as an artist but also as an individual, teaching him that creative ambitions require patience, responsibility and sustained effort.
A Pause That Led to a New Beginning
After completing his studies, Prasanna's artistic journey entered an unexpected pause.

In many ways, the artwork became a bridge between the artist he had been before the interruption and the artist he was becoming after it. It marked a restart and a renewed understanding of why art mattered to him.
The P2 Studio Takes Shape
Out of this renewed creative journey emerged The P2 Studio, a platform that reflects Prasanna's artistic identity, experiences and aspirations. The name P2 has a personal connection to his mother, Prachi, and sister, Prabhavi. Beyond its name, the studio represents an evolving creative space built around experimentation, learning and freedom of expression.
The P2 Studio is not limited to a single medium or discipline. It provides Prasanna with a platform to paint, teach, experiment, create digital content and communicate stories through different forms of
From imagination to canvas
visual expression. It brings together traditional influences and contemporary approaches, allowing his practice to evolve.
Exploring Multiple Forms of Expression
Rather than confining himself to one style, Prasanna works across acrylic, watercolour, oil painting, drawing and digital design. Portraits, nature, spirituality, heritage, culture and everyday experiences provide recurring sources of inspiration.
Photography has become another important part of his visual language, giving him an opportunity to observe and capture details that might otherwise go unnoticed. He also enjoys visual storytelling and experimenting with different ways of presenting an idea.
Exhibitions and art stalls have added another dimension to this process. Seeing people respond to his paintings, connect with particular pieces and purchase his work has been an encouraging part of his journey. For Prasanna, every artwork remains a learning experience rather than an endpoint.

and YouTube to explore digital storytelling and connect with audiences outside traditional exhibition spaces. His content brings together art, music, devotion, Goan culture, heritage and storytelling. A painting may communicate through colour and composition, while a photograph, reel or cultural performance can convey the same idea through movement, sound and context.
This digital presence has also helped him connect with younger audiences. By presenting elements of Goan culture through contemporary formats, he hopes to make traditional practices more relatable and engaging for a generation accustomed to digital media.
From Student to Teacher
Teaching art has become one of the most meaningful extensions of Prasanna's journey. His experiences as a student continue to influence the way he approaches his role in the classroom. For him, art education is not restricted to teaching students how to draw portraits or paint landscapes. It is about developing observation, creative thinking, self-expression and appreciation for the world around them.
The encouragement he once received from his teacher now informs his approach. He wants his students to understand that their ideas have value and that mistakes are part of the creative process. Helping even one student discover a genuine passion for art represents a meaningful achievement.
Preserving Roots Through Contemporary Art
Looking ahead, Prasanna hopes to develop The P2 Studio into a stronger creative platform where art, education, culture and storytelling can exist together. His aspirations extend beyond personal artistic growth to encouraging young artists and contributing to the preservation of Goa's cultural identity. He sees enormous creative potential in the state's folk traditions, music, festivals, devotional
T raditional art, timeless beauty practices, heritage and visual culture. Through contemporary artistic interpretations, he hopes to document these elements and present them in ways that resonate with today's audiences.
At the heart of this vision is a belief in evolution without losing connection to one's roots. The P2 Studio embodies that balance: respecting tradition while allowing creativity to experiment, adapt and find new forms. For Prasanna, art is ultimately about more than creating something beautiful.
It is a means of preserving memories, expressing emotions, documenting culture, telling stories and inspiring others. The P2 Studio therefore represents more than a studio or creative identity. It is an ongoing journey of creating, learning, teaching and keeping the spirit of art and Goa's cultural heritage alive.

the everyday lives of successive generations. The family name Oliveira has Portuguese origins, with oliveira meaning “olive tree”. The family’s history also reflects a strong tradition of education and service. Ralph’s great-great-grandfather was a surgeon and among the early graduates of Goa’s historic medical school.
Walking through the house today offers Ralph a tangible connection to those who came before him. The home has witnessed generations growing up, inheriting land, pursuing different paths and raising families of their own. Through all these changes, the house has remained a constant, preserving a part of the family story and, in turn, a small chapter of Goa’s history.
Where Indo-Portuguese Heritage Lives
Happy guests after a wonderful heritage house tour of Casa Oliveira Fernandes For Ralph Oliveira Fernandes and his wife, Celiz Pinto, Casa Oliveira Fernandes is far more than a heritage home. It is a place shaped by more than three centuries of family life, carrying memories, traditions and stories across seven generations. Built by Ralph’s ancestors over 300 years ago, the house has remained closely connected to the family, evolving with each generation while retaining the character that makes it distinctly Goan.
Casa Oliveira Fernandes immediately conveys a strong sense of space and the distinctive character of Indo-Portuguese architecture. A large central hall opens onto a wide, airy verandah, while high ceilings allow natural light and breeze to move through the home. Its details reveal the meeting of Portuguese and Goan influences.
Today, Ralph and Celiz continue that legacy by welcoming visitors into the home and sharing its history, architecture and traditions. For them, opening the house to others is not simply about preserving an old property. It is about keeping alive the warmth, hospitality and way of life that have been part of their family for generations.
A Home Shaped by Generations
The history of Casa Oliveira Fernandes is inseparable from the story of the family that has lived there. Ralph is the seventh generation of his family to call the house home, giving him a deeply personal connection to its past. Unlike a property that has simply been inherited, Casa Oliveira Fernandes has been lived in, cared for and continuously woven into

A Tradition of Hospitality
Welcoming visitors into Casa Oliveira Fernandes is a tradition that began several decades ago. Ralph’s parents, Otto and Cilia, started opening the home to guests in the 1980s. Growing up, Ralph saw people from different places enter the house and experience a way of life that was deeply rooted in his own family.
Today, he and Celiz continue what his parents began while introducing experiences of their own. Visitors can explore the heritage home, participate in traditional Goan azulejos painting and experience feni tasting. The house also welcomes private events, celebrations and photoshoots, offering different ways for people to connect with the space.
These experiences allow the home to remain active rather than simply preserved as an architectural relic. Each visitor becomes part of its continuing story, even if only for a short time.
The family altar which has been used for wedding blessing for hundreds of years A traditional altar, intricate woodwork, carved designs, a spacious courtyard and distinctive shell windows contribute to the home’s architectural identity. Rather than feeling like a preserved display, these elements remain part of a house that has continued to be lived in and experienced.
The interiors also hold objects that have travelled through generations of the family. Belgian crystal chandeliers, intricately carved rosewood furniture and rare fine china remain carefully preserved within the home. Among the most evocative pieces is an old bullock cart that was once used by the family for transportation.
For Ralph, the cart holds a particular significance. It is an ordinary object from another era, yet it offers a direct connection to the everyday lives of his ancestors. These possessions are not simply antiques; they are reminders of family routines, celebrations and experiences that existed long before his own generation.
Heritage That Can Be Experienced
For Ralph, preservation has always meant more than maintaining the physical structure of a 300-year-old house. It means ensuring that the traditions, stories and hospitality associated with it can continue to be experienced. Whether through a heritage house tour, an azulejos painting experience or a private celebration, Casa Oliveira Fernandes offers visitors an opportunity to engage with aspects of Goan culture in an intimate setting. The emphasis is on experiencing the heritage rather than simply observing it.
This philosophy is central to Ralph’s vision for the future. He does not want Casa Oliveira Fernandes to feel frozen in the past. Instead, he hopes it will remain a living home that continues to create memories for his family while allowing others to experience Goa’s character, traditions and hospitality.
Bringing Goa Closer to the World
Ralph’s connection to tourism has also shaped the way Casa Oliveira Fernandes welcomes visitors.

He has been involved in the tourism industry for many years and runs a company with his father that handles international cruise ships visiting Goa. As a result, many visitors to the heritage home are cruise guests looking for an experience beyond conventional sightseeing.
For these travellers, a visit to Casa Oliveira Fernandes offers a different perspective of Goa. Instead of simply viewing historic landmarks, they enter a family home, meet the people connected to it and experience its traditions firsthand.
That personal interaction is at the heart of the experience. Guests are not merely presented with Goa’s history as something belonging to the past. They are invited into a space where that history continues to exist through the home, its family and its everyday hospitality.
Looking Towards the Future
Ralph hopes Casa Oliveira Fernandes will continue to develop as a distinctive heritage space where
people can experience Goa’s Indo-Portuguese culture and way of life in a personal setting. He also envisions it as a place where people can celebrate meaningful occasions, from intimate gatherings to special family events, creating new memories within a home that already holds more than 300 years of them.
For the Oliveira Fernandes family, the future of Casa is therefore not about keeping it untouched. It is about allowing it to evolve while protecting what makes it meaningful.
After seven generations, the house remains a constant presence in the family’s story. Its walls, objects and spaces carry traces of those who lived there before, while the visitors welcomed today add new experiences to its history.
In this balance between memory and the present, Casa Oliveira Fernandes continues to embody a simple but enduring idea of heritage: the past remains alive when it continues to be lived, shared and experienced.

The music is then selected to complement the ceremony and its liturgy.
This personalised approach allows performances to range from a three-member choir to an eight- or ten-member ensemble accompanied by different voices and instruments. The arrangements can also change according to the occasion, ensuring that the music feels appropriate rather than following a standardised programme.

For the members, there is something particularly moving about hearing an entire congregation participate in the music. The collective voices create an atmosphere of community and devotion that extends beyond the performance itself, making these celebrations especially meaningful.

Digital Storyteller
Sophia Noronha Sophia Noronha is a Toronto-based fashion, beauty and lifestyle creator whose storytelling connects Toronto and Goa through fashion, travel, food, culture and everyday experiences. Article by: Team ItsGoa

For Sophia Noronha, fashion has been a lifelong language, but storytelling has become the medium through which she brings together the people, places and experiences that shape her world. Born in Toronto and of Jamaican heritage, Sophia has spent more than three decades working across fashion sales, styling, media and creative direction.
She is conscious that she is neither a tourist in the traditional sense nor a local. Instead, she sees herself as someone with a genuine connection to Goa who continues to learn about its history and culture. Living between Toronto and Goa has encouraged her to slow down and notice the smaller experiences that reveal the character of a place.
She also owned a clothing boutique in Toronto for several years. Today, she works as a fashion, beauty and lifestyle creator, media and social consultant, mentor and creative collaborator, with her content extending into travel, food and culture.
A market visit, a conversation over chai, discovering a small business, having something tailored, walking through a neighbourhood or sharing a meal can, in her view, offer as much insight as a major tourist attraction.
A significant part of her current journey is her growing connection with Goa. Through her husband’s family, whose ancestral roots are in Seraulim and extend across the state, Goa has become an important part of her personal and creative life. Her experiences between Toronto and Goa have given her a distinct perspective on both places and inspired a new chapter in her digital storytelling.
Telling Stories Between Two Worlds
From Fashion to Storytelling
Sophia’s career in fashion spans more than three decades, encompassing sales, styling, media and creative work with designers, models, influencers and media professionals. Digital storytelling emerged naturally from that experience. She wanted to go beyond wearing or styling clothes and explore the stories behind the people, businesses, places and experiences that interested her.
When Goa became a larger part of her life, Sophia began documenting her experiences for an audience that had primarily known her through fashion, beauty and Toronto.
What emerged was more than a collection of travel moments. It became an exploration of what it means to move between two worlds. Toronto remains an important part of her identity, while Goa has become a significant part of her story.
Social media gave her the opportunity to communicate directly with audiences, allowing her work to gradually expand from fashion and beauty into food, travel, culture and everyday life.
A Growing Connection with Goa
Sophia’s relationship with Goa has developed through extended stays, including six months in 2022 and more than six months this year. Spending longer periods in the state has allowed her to explore beyond the conventional tourist experience, meet people and understand everyday life more closely.

Instead, the project will share what she has discovered through her own experiences, offering both first-time visitors and those familiar with Goa a more personal way of exploring the state. Her upcoming content will also look beyond the obvious tourist stops, with plans to explore South Goa, Margao, Panjim and other parts of the state.
Stories Rooted in Connection
Sophia approaches storytelling from her own perspective while incorporating the history and stories of the brands and businesses she features. For audiences outside India, she hopes to present Goa as a place with depth and personality rather than simply beaches, sunsets and luxury resorts.
Sophia at Joseph Bar’s, featured on its menu
For audiences in Goa and India, she hopes her work offers a slightly different lens on familiar places, people and experiences. This balance between familiarity and discovery has become an important part of her approach.
Rather than choosing between the two, she brings them together through her content. This perspective also allows her to explore how different cultures, cities and ways of living meet and influence one another.
Her curiosity also extends to language. She is interested in learning Konkani and Hindi to connect more deeply with the people she meets across Goa, reflecting her belief that understanding a place begins with engaging with its people.
A Different Side of Goa
Sophia’s upcoming Goa-focused content and digital guide are designed to move beyond the familiar tourist checklist. The idea grew from people regularly asking her where she shops, eats and spends time in Goa and how she navigates everyday life there.
Her first Goa Guide is set to launch on November 1, with all the information to be shared on her Instagram at the time of launch. The guide will cover fashion and beauty, food and restaurants, everyday experiences, events and useful information for visitors.
More importantly, she hopes to highlight the people, traditions and small businesses that give Goa its character. She does not present herself as a local guide.

Reinvention Without an Expiry Date
After decades in fashion and several professional and personal chapters, Sophia sees her current journey as an evolution rather than a complete departure from her past. Her experience in fashion and media continues to influence her work, while her connection with Goa has opened new creative possibilities.
She believes some of the most meaningful stories come from ordinary people doing extraordinary things, whether running family businesses, creating something by hand, preserving traditions or welcoming others into their communities. That human connection is something she hopes to capture more consistently through her work.
A little fan moment at the Goa Carnival parade in Margao Looking ahead, Sophia plans to continue developing her Toronto-to-Goa storytelling concept while exploring travel content, collaborations with Goan businesses and creatives, digital products and mentoring. Ultimately, she hopes to build something that extends beyond social media, bringing fashion, culture, travel, food and people together while creating opportunities for creatives, entrepreneurs and small businesses.
Sophia at the Goan Overseas Association in Toronto “Viva Goa” celebration
For Sophia Noronha, this is not simply a story of moving between Toronto and Goa. It is about using the perspective gained from both worlds to discover, document and connect the stories that exist between them.
