Introduction

Goa, the tiniest state on the western coast of India, boasts golden pristine beaches, palmfringed avenues, flavourful food, delicious Portuguese-influenced sweets, and warm, hospitable people. Also known as the Ibiza of India for its partying. A tropical paradise of flora and fauna, from the very famous 'almi' (mushrooms) endemic to its forests, that grow only on the red mud anthills, to the solar prawns that are fished immediately after the monsoons, Goa is unique. Tourists are also attracted to Goa for its cultural heritage - from the famous old Portuguese churches like Se Cathedral in Old Goa, the 16th Century Safa Masjid in Ponda and Shree Mangesha Temple in Mardol, the legendary Arvalem or Pandava Caves where the Pandavas of the Mahabharat fame lived, to its two unique festivals Carnival and Shigmo. Goa plays host to many festivals - the International Film Festival of India that promotes cinema, the Serendipity Art Festival, Sunburn Music Festival, The Grape Escapade to name a few. To showcase this varied heritage of culture, art, tradition, food, and people, in 2015 ItsGoa was born.

The main aim was to make it the premier portal for all things Goa. We were able to showcase Goa like never before. Soon our blog-based website transcended the virtual space, with the ItsGoa magazine – a sought-after resource for visitors to Goa from countries like Norway, Germany, UK, USA, UAE, etc.

His journey into content creation did not begin with a fixed plan or clearly defined niche, but with an instinctive pull toward cinematography and the desire to communicate ideas in ways that feel raw, unfiltered, and deeply personal.

Cinematography always held Adrian’s interest, but it was only toward the end of his college years that he began paying closer attention to it. As he spent more time observing content on social media, he noticed that the storytelling styles he enjoyed were largely shaped by creators in the West, with only a few attempting similar approaches in India and even fewer in Goa. This absence became an opportunity.

Rather than catering to popular expectations, Adrian chose to create work that reflected who he was, even if it meant minimal support, uncertain direction, and self-doubt along the way.

Rather than conventional tourism, the project curates carefully designed encounters for biodiversity researchers, wildlife enthusiasts, food lovers, history seekers, and explorers interested in the lesser-known side of Goa. Each experience is enriched by local narratives, islander knowledge, and access to spaces rarely seen by outsiders. Group sizes are intentionally small, led by native islanders with a deep connection to their land.

A Life Shaped by Global Exposure and Local Roots

Russell Cardozo’s journey spans continents and cultures. Over the past three decades, he has lived and worked across Mumbai, Hollywood in California, and Dubai’s Media City, while travelling extensively through North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. These experiences sharpened his crosscultural understanding and global perspective.

In 2019, Russell returned to his ancestral home on Divar Island in Goa. The pandemic lockdown became a turning point. Immersed in the island’s natural rhythms and social fabric, he began observing, documenting, and engaging deeply with the local community. This period marked a decisive shift from a career-driven path in IT and media to a purposedriven life centred on conservation, education, and community engagement.

Origins Inspired by Urgency and Observation

The idea for the project took shape during the pandemic when travel restrictions encouraged Russell to explore Divar with renewed attention.

What began as quiet observation soon revealed a growing imbalance.

He witnessed ancestral homes disappearing, traditional festivals losing their original character, and oral histories fading from memory.

Environmental pressures such as encroachment, unplanned construction, poor waste management, ferry congestion, water shortages, and power cuts further highlighted the island’s vulnerability. Weak local governance often left residents to manage these challenges alone.

The Divar Island Project became Russell’s response to this urgency, a platform to document, connect, and act before the island’s cultural and ecological rhythm is lost.

The Divar Island Project emerged as a communitybased initiative rooted in Goa’s river islands. At its core, the project seeks to preserve Divar’s fragile biodiversity and cultural ecosystem while offering meaningful, immersive experiences to conscientious travellers.

The project is guided by a simple yet powerful belief: meaningful connections with nature, culture, and community foster care, curiosity, and long-term stewardship. It aims to educate both visitors and locals while restoring balance between sharing heritage and conserving it.

Preserving Culture Through Participation

Divar’s cultural identity is preserved through direct engagement rather than display. The project documents traditions, seasonal cycles, and oral histories through guided walks and collaborations.

Visitors are welcomed into ancestral homes, farms, chapels, wetlands, and khazan landscapes, experiencing culture as a living system intertwined with ecology.

Beyond storytelling, the initiative actively supports community welfare. It has assisted environmental and animal welfare organisations in operating more effectively on the island. With coordination support, the Worldwide Veterinary Service successfully sterilised 360 stray dogs in one month, while ongoing collaboration with PAWs has helped reduce stray-related incidents.

A Youth Empowerment Program currently runs in Divar schools, encouraging students to become informed protectors of their island.

Community Involvement at the Heart of the Project

Every excursion involves local residents, farmers, elders, and storytellers who share lived experiences rather than rehearsed narratives. Russell works closely with village elders to record oral histories and collaborates with schools and young volunteers to document biodiversity and heritage.

One deeply impactful initiative addressed the island’s growing stray dog crisis, which had led to accidents, animal deaths, and rising rabies cases.

Workshops conducted with WVS helped shift community attitudes from hostility to responsible care through feeding and sterilisation.

Other meaningful moments include documenting elders’ memories of the island and screening the film Kharvan by filmmaker Nitya Navelkar for schoolchildren, helping them see Divar as an ecological marvel rather than just a place to live.

Programs Rooted in Ecology and Learning

The Divar Island Project curates farm walks, heritage walks, bird walks, nature treks, house visits, and short stays. These experiences highlight the island’s unique ecosystems and the khazan landscapes, showing how agriculture, livelihoods, and nature coexist.

The project also conducts outdoor music therapy workshops themed around ecology, encouraging participants to value shared spaces and environmental preservation. Each program is designed to be immersive, educational, and respectful of the island’s limits.

A Responsible Approach to Sustainability

Environmental responsibility is embedded in every aspect of the project. Visitors are encouraged to leave vehicles on the mainland and travel using ferries and local buses. The project has developed a local public transport-based “Hop On, Hop Off” model to reduce traffic and pollution while strengthening existing infrastructure.

Group sizes remain limited, and a strict leave-notrace policy is followed. Visitors are actively discouraged from carrying single-use plastic, reinforcing mindful travel habits aligned with conservation goals.

Balancing Purpose Over Profit

Russell is clear that this is not a tourism venture in the traditional sense. It functions as an experiential learning and awareness initiative.

While this approach brings financial challenges and irregular visitor flow, it allows the project to remain aligned with its core purpose, placing Divar’s ecology and heritage above commercial gain.

Measurable Impact on the Community

The project has attracted researchers, nature enthusiasts, and culturally sensitive travellers who engage in meaningful exchanges with locals. Their presence supports homestays, taverns, eateries, and service providers, contributing to a steady and sustainable local economy. Many visitors return, strengthening long-term community relationships.

More importantly, there has been a noticeable shift in local attitudes. Residents are now more proactive in reporting wildlife injuries, supporting sterilisation drives, and addressing animal welfare concerns. This growing sense of shared responsibility reflects deeper community awareness and cooperation.

Recognition and Collaborations

The Divar Island Project has been featured in The Navhind Times Panorama, Heritage First Festival Goa 2024–25, and Serendipity Arts Festival 2024. It has collaborated with organisations such as WWF for the City Nature Challenge 2025 and the Indian Army’s Operation Sadbhavna 2025.

With support from the Homi Bhabha Fellowship Council, Mumbai, the project currently runs a structured Youth Empowerment Program on the island. Partnerships with Goa Bird Conservation

Looking Ahead

Russell envisions establishing a self-sustaining, community-led model that can be adapted across other river islands of Goa. Plans include expanding youth nature and heritage programs and developing short-term volunteering modules for environmentalists and ecologists seeking meaningful engagement.

Captain Yogesh Dahiya flies aircraft for a living, yet his truest journeys unfold on paper. The former Indian Air Force officer from Haryana, who now flies for FLY91, a pure play regional airline headquartered in the state, tells this publication about his life divided between his two passions, the cockpit and the couplet, where poetry remains the dream that took flight long before his wings ever did.

For Captain Yogesh Dahiya, poetry came before flying.

The pilot, who flies for FLY91, a pure play regional airline operating out of Goa, says that he has been writing verse since school, when the dream of becoming a pilot had only just begun to take root.

“Poetry has been my first love since my school days.

Those close to me have known me as both an Air Force officer and a poet, which is how the name Poetic Pilot came to be," the 47-year-old former Indian Air Force pilot from Haryana says.

Dahiya grew up in a small village named ( Nahra, district Sonipat) in Haryana where rooftops were the prime viewing galleries for the sky and the aircraft that whizzed through it. Aircraft passing overhead would pull his attention away from the wheat fields and narrow lanes. “I would look up at the sky in awe, watching them fly overhead, and even run after them through the streets like any excited kid,” he says. Dahiya says that the environment around him did not encourage youngsters like him to take wings at that point in time. “People didn’t usually dream big, but I always did,” he says. The two dreams he held as a child came together when he joined the Indian Air Force as a pilot and officer, where Dahiya claims his journey really began.

After several years in uniform, he transitioned to civil aviation last year and now flies for FLY91. The shift brought a new phase in his creative life. While poetry had always been a private practice, music became the next frontier. “After transitioning from the Indian Air Force to civil aviation, I felt the urge to start something new. That instinct naturally led me from poetry to songwriting and music composition," Dahiya explains.

He began working with singers to record original songs. The collaboration encouraged him to launch his own music label Poetic Pilot Music which he says is still in the early stages. “We have already released two songs with another five to six currently in production,” he says, calling the process fulfilling and a “beautiful evolution” of his creative journey.

Even as his music footprint extends gradually, his love for poetry remains constant. In one poem he stepped into a world of desire and waiting:

iss duniya ke kinare khada kayi sallo se

de de koi toh bahana mujhme behne ke liye

(For years I have stood at the edge of this world

Give me one reason to let myself flow)

His verses often address hesitation in love and the choice between staying and leaving:

jate jate teri divano ki di halat thi

chale jane ki thi jid yaa ruke rehne ke liye

(Your admirers were in such a state as you left

Stubborn to go yet longing to stay)

Dahiya writes in Hindi, using everyday phrases and colloquialisms. His poems carry unguarded emotion and often turn personal reflections into universal questions.

A poem titled Ek Garam Raat looks at the fears and expectations placed on a child. The key word being hosla or courage. As a woman wonders what the world will require from the boy, the response comes as a lesson in resilience and The poem ends with a refusal to conform:

rehne do

tumhare jaisa nahi banana mujhe

(Leave it

I do not want to become like you)

The poet says courage is important in life and in art.

“Hosla is not just a word. It is part of how I try to live,” he says.

Another poem, Ek Fata Purana Ladka, looks back at youth marked by experiences and mistakes. It recalls a time when innocence still survived:

jab vah ladka chidiyon sa chahkta tha

Kisi nayi kitab ki khushbu sa mehekta tha

(When that boy chirped like birds

When he smelled fresh like a new book)

He says poetry helps him stay connected to the younger version of himself who once chased aircraft and dreams that seemed impossible.

“Poetry has always been a way for me to stay grounded to who I am,” he says.

Dahiya uses digital platforms to share his creative work. His YouTube channel Poetic Pilot features songs and spoken word videos.

Social media also gives him a way to reach readers who may never step inside an aircraft cockpit from which he manoeuvres his passengers' destiny and destination.

When asked if flying influences his writing, he says, “Poetry and flying are both passions that define me.

One is my profession.

The other expresses my heart,” he says. The two coexist as parts of the same life rather than feeding each other in dramatic ways, he seems to suggest without dramatics.

His dual identity has created its own audience. There are people who know him as Captain Dahiya and others who call him Yogi, the name he signs off his poems with.

In his verse he even jokes about that relationship:

‘yogi’ mai tumhe kya kahu kya kya nah kahu

sun shayar, bas tu yaar hai kahne ke liye

(yogi, what can I even call you
