Foreword We don’t need more food, but more technology and applied innovations to bring about economic growth and lift people out of poverty in developing countries. Through the second edition of the “International Award for Innovative Ideas and Technologies on Agribusiness”, UNIDO ITPO Italy – in collaboration with Seeds&Chips and the Italian National Research Council – created a tool that brought together different development actors and contributed in closing the gap between local needs and technology providers. In line with SDG 9 and UNIDO’s global effort to promote Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development (ISID), UNIDO ITPO Italy elevated the importance of innovation in the agribusiness sector as a fundamental enabler of economic growth in developing countries. It did so in the context of Seeds&Chips, a leading international Summit in this sector, which this year boasted the participation of the former President of the United States, Barack Obama. This experience confirmed once again that we need the courage of young innovators and the quality of the ideas and technologies to bring about lasting change in developing countries. Diana Battaggia, Head of UNIDO ITPO Italy

The ceremony 4.1 Seeds&Chips ‘17 Seeds&Chips Global Food Innovation Summit is one of the top Food Innovation events worldwide, dedicated to showcasing national and international talent and cutting-edge solutions from around the world. Food Innovation concerns the whole food chain, from farm to fork: the increasing world population and protein consumption, climate change, scarcity of available resources, socio-demographic changes, protection of health and irreversible and overt changes in the processes of choice and purchase are all important to food innovation. We are changing the ways in which food is produced, processed, distributed, communicated and consumed. Never before in history has man faced challenges so urgent and never before has he had access to the technological infrastructure to address them, and still there remains so much potential to be discovered. “Thanks this edition of Seeds&Chips and thanks to President Barack H. Obama’s extraordinary participation in the Global Food Innovation Summit, the city of Milano - and Italy – are once again the world hub of food and food innovation, a journey that began with Expo 2015,” stated Marco Gualtieri, founder and Chairman of Seeds&Chips. “New technologies can offer us the solutions to tackle some of the major global challenges: food security, nutrition, combatting waste, sustainability and climate change. I believe that Italy can be a key player in this sector by joining innovation and our long-standing tradition of excellence in food. There are hundreds of startups, businesses and companies who are active in this field and at Seeds & Chips our overall goal is to gather them all under one roof with a synergistic action that will enable Milano and Italy to become an international reference point for innovation in food and food-tech”. #SaC17 #FoodTech #FoodInnovation #AgTech #InternetOfFood

Winners For the overall category, there were three winners: • Yarok, an Israeli start-up which has developed a fast micro-biological testing system for the fresh food industry which protects consumers from dangerous bacteria, such as E.coli, Listeria and Salmonella, and facilitates producers’ access to international markets; • Evaptainers, a US startup which promotes cold chain solutions for the conservation of food; and • Coffee Flour, also from the United States of America, which received an award for having come up with a “super-ingredient” from coffee waste that has multiple uses in the culinary field. For the under 35 years-of-age category, the winner was Italian Green Code and its project, Demetra, a natural post-harvest treatment to extend the shelf-life of fresh products, which often cannot access markets in a state that allows for their consumption. For the women contestants category, the award went to Biocopac Plus project, developed by the Experimental Station for the Food Preservation Industry (Stazione Sperimentale per l’Industria delle Conserve Alimentari - SSICA). The project focuses on technology that uses industrial tomato waste to produce a biometallic paint for the packaging industry. Honorable mentions went to the Ricult project of Pakistan’s Usman Javaid, which supports credit access for smallholder farmers, and Electrap, a joint Italy/Nepal/UAE collaboration that proposes an environmentally sustainable solution without the use of pesticides to protect date, coconut, oil and decorative palms from the red palm weevil.

Coffee Flour

.28.

The new global impact food Coffee Flour is made from the pulp and skin of the coffee cherry that is typically discarded during coffee milling operations. An estimated 21 billion kgs of wet cherries are wasted annually, threatening fragile ecosystems and contributing. 2% of the world’s carbon emissions when left to decompose in landfills. Coffee Flour dries and mills the cherries into a nutritionally-dense flour that can reduce environmental damage, generate economic value to smallholder farmers and millers through job creation in the community, and bridge dietary gaps in both micro and macro nutrients when added to local diets. The product is now being incorporated into chocolate, bakery, and beverage products of food & beverage companies around the globe, while also transforming coffee-growing communities. The production volume of Coffee Flour is approximately equal to that of cocoa, with impact potential in the 60+ countries that produce coffee globally.

BiocopacPlus

.32.

Sustainable bio-based coating from tomato processing by-products for food metal packaging The BIOCOPACPlus project has been funded under LIFE+ Environment Policy and Governance project application. The project goal is to prove and demonstrate the viability of an innovative technology for the production of a bio-lacquer obtained from the re-use of the tomato waste and to be used as coating for food contact applications in metal cans. The project is industry driven and focused on demonstration activities aimed to prove the technical feasibility and effectiveness of the cutin extraction and production systems currently developed at laboratory scale. The increasing worldwide demand for good quality and safer food products and the increasing societal concerns over food contaminants migration and health related drawbacks are a focus central subject topic in the food industry agenda. In response to pressure from consumers and to new, widespread sensitivity and awareness, the development strategies of the packaging sector can be summed up in food safety, sustainability and valorization of by-products. www.unido.it/award2017/biocopacplus/

Red Palm Weevils Final Solution The RPW (Red Palm Weevils - Rhynchophorus Ferrugineus/Palmarum) infestation is hitting, worldwide, the palm trees population in a very critical, severe way, creating many millions USD damages every year. It is currently reported from nearly 50 countries in diverse agro-ecosystems worldwide including the Mediterranean basin countries. Main affected cultivars are date, coconut, oil and decorative palm trees, so hardly compromising the survival of company and family farmers in Africa, Middle East, Asia and South America. All the previous devices and systems used till now are not allowing a sufficient, significant mass trapping, although the need of a lot of very expensive, continuous maintenance.
