Bernard here and I’ve taken over this edition of the ITPLD newsletter to highlight some of the exciting offerings at your library. I may be partial, but September is one of the best months of the year because it is library card sign-up month! If you don’t already have an ITPLD card, you should stop at either of the library’s locations to pick one up so you can take advantage of all your library has to offer.

A library card unlocks many resources available to you online or at the Branch and main Library. New materials and experiences are part of the fun! Visit the new light table in Youth Services, watch the latest Dr. Strange DVDs, or check out the Kill A Watt Meter Model P4400 to test how much electricity you’re using at home.

ITPLD has an amazing makerspace called the Launch Pad. It’s a shared space for all ages to learn, create, explore, play and collaborate. Every day, residents from our community come in to bring their projects to life using our sewing machines, laser engravers, 3D printers and a variety of other tools.

Have an idea for something you would like to create? Stop in and talk with our staff who can help you get started in a creative direction.

Can’t make it into the library? Utilize online resources like Gale Courses, LinkedIn Learning and The Great Courses, or stream movies using one of our apps.

Our ESL (English as a second language) programs offer you the opportunity to meet fellow students and work together toward a common goal.

Do you like what I’m talking about? Well, I invite you to spend a few minutes going through the newsletter to see all that is happening at the library and I hope to see you joining us for a program, browsing around the bookshelves or picking up an item from our drive-up.

Recently, Christian took an art class as an exploratory elective that gave students a taste of the arts and theatre. “I enjoy doing art. My Mom inspired me, and when I visit her office, I have created scenes with markers on her whiteboard. She gave me a sketchbook, and I have art markers that I use to create new work.”

uring a recent art challenge this summer, member Christian Giron created a mixed media composition of monsters invading the city. He finds inspiration at the library and visits about every two weeks to check out manga books or other resources from the collection to contemplate and create his next piece of art. An avid wrestler and gamer who enjoys playing FIFA 22 on PS5 with his father, Christian has been enjoying the library for many years. “I enjoy reading at home,” he says. “I also enjoy the tough sports where it’s just you and another person competing or creating an illustration from the books, shows and movies that inspire me.”

Christian and his mom Claudia have been visiting the library since he was a young child. Together, they signed the Share Your Memories wall during the construction phase in 2016 and have a dedicated brick in the Reading Garden.

“We called ITPLD the ‘little library,’ and we have visited for many years,” notes Claudia.

Visit the library lobby in August to see a customcurated collection of resources that inspire Christian. From One-Punchman manga to Harry Potter illustrations, you can see how these resources resonate in his compositions. Three pieces of his artwork will be on display with the collection.

The Indian Trails Branch 99 E. Palatine Rd., Prospect Heights, is a vibrant space with a neighborhood feel, located behind McDonald’s, north of Palatine Road. The Branch houses a diverse collection of popular books, movies and more in English and Spanish.

THE LEVYS OF MONTICELLO Monday, September 12, 6:30-8:30 pm The Levys of Monticello is a documentary film that tells the little-known story of the Levy family, which owned and carefully preserved Monticello for nearly a century.

NO ONE EVER SEES INDIANS: NATIVE AMERICANS IN MEDIA Monday, October 17, 6:30-8 pm This performance/discussion is structured as a threepart magic act. Speaker Ernest M. Whiteman III discusses the many representations of Native Americans in media and how these representations inform audiences’ perceptions of Native peoples and issues. The acts are separated by personal anecdotes that reflect the ideology of lived experience versus the authorship of expertise of Native representation. R
