- Amy Breiler, CCSD21 Director of Teaching and Learning for Literacy

As millions turn to books, journaling and other screen-free activites, we’re witnessing a cultural shift toward meaningful offline experiences. Many are rediscovering something libraries have always known: meaningful connections often happen away from a screen. While interest in analog activities is growing, reading itself is declining. Recent research shows only about one-third of children and teens enjoy reading in their free time, and fewer than one in five read daily for pleasure. At Indian Trails Public Library, we believe reading is more than an academic skill. It sparks imagination, builds empathy and creates opportunity. That’s why Family Literacy Nights are an integral part of our community experience. Through these special events, students receive a free book to begin building a home library and families discover stories together. Young readers experience the joy of owning a book and they are given the opportunity to build their own home library.

“Research has shown that the very existence of books in the home is correlated with student well-being, academic achievement, and future success.” - Scholastic Research & Validation. (2023). Scholastic Home Libraries Topic Paper. New York: Scholastic

We can reach even more families and help ensure every child experiences the timeless gift that changes lives: reading. Thank you for helping us put books into the hands of young readers. Sheila Anderson, President | Foundation for The Indian Trails Public Library District
