MY LIBRARY

When longtime Indian Trails Library member Irene created her Bookstagram page, she had no idea it would eventually lead her to donating an exclusive author event with acclaimed writer Roshani Chokshi back to the library that helped shape her love of reading.

The journey began last year when Irene—an avid reader raised in a multilingual, book‑loving family— started a Bookstagram account to share reviews, connect with other readers and follow her favorite authors. Inspired by a friend who built her own online reading community during the pandemic, Irene took what she describes as a “leap of faith.” She soon found herself engaging with authors worldwide, discovering new genres and reading advanced reader copies.

Among the writers she followed was Roshani Chokshi, whose books she already enjoyed. One day, Chokshi posted an Instagram giveaway: an opportunity for followers to win a donated author event for a school or organization of their choice. Irene entered casually, “Why not go for it?” and weeks later was surprised to receive a message from Chokshi’s assistant saying she had been selected.

How a Love of Reading Led to a Generous Author Event Donation

“I honestly wondered if it was real or some kind of mistake,” Irene recalls. After confirming the offer, she asked whether the event could be donated not only to a school but also to a public library. When told yes, she knew immediately where she wanted it to go: Indian Trails Public Library, the place that had nurtured her reading life since childhood.

CHOKSHI

Irene’s history with Indian Trails is filled with memories. She first got her library card in elementary school while working on a class research project about Frances Willard. One of her most cherished moments was her grandfather taking her to check out the fifth Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix—the last library trip they shared before he passed away. That moment helped shape her lifelong bond with the library.

As Irene grew older, the library became a place where she found new opportunities. She joined the High School Advisory Board, gaining leadership and presentation experience that she still uses today. After high school, she continued exploring the

library’s offerings and eventually discovered the maker and art programs. While she once doubted her artistic abilities, painting classes taught by Susie Speck along with a variety of creative programs offered through the Launch Pad helped her unlock new skills in crocheting, laser cutting glass, sewing and more. She quickly became a regular program attendee and looks forward to the next Maker @Home Subscription Box.

Irene has always loved meeting authors, and programs like One Book, One Community became annual highlights. She especially enjoyed this past December’s open house, where attendees lined up outside in the bitter cold. “Everyone was joking and chatting just to stay warm,” she says. “It was such a fun, welcoming moment—it felt like the whole community was in it together.” That joy made donating the Chokshi author event feel even more meaningful. “This library has been part of every stage of my life,” Irene says. “Giving something special back just made sense.”

For Irene, author talks are magical. She loves hearing writers explain the hidden layers in their stories and experiencing the “euphoric moment” when everything clicks into place. Donating a visit from Roshani Chokshi was her way of sharing that excitement with other readers.

I've grown up here, If I can give something special back, I want to.
