Director's Column In March 2015, I had the privilege of joining a work team from the Buffalo Grove Rotary Club on a trip to Guatemala.

During our stay we completed many projects at AK’Tenamit, a secondary boarding school in the Rio Dulce region that serves the indigenous people of Guatemala.

One afternoon, I wandered into the Ak’ Tenamit library and met with the staff to talk about the needs of their library. I left knowing libraries face the same challenges everywhere.

Special Events

ART EXHIBITS MAY "My Favorite Places" Art Exhibit by Aneta Nowik Travel with Aneta Nowik as she takes you to "My Favorite Places" featuring her paintings on various expeditions. A graduate from the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, Poland, she lives and works in Chicago.

JUNE "The Desire to Live" Art Exhibit by Paulina Pawelczyk-Metzger Polish born artist Paulina Pawelczyk-Metzger displays her ceramic pieces and paintings inspired by the beauty around her.

Indian Trails is 1,800 miles from Ak’ Tenamit, yet we share similar goals for our communities: provide a safe place where people can gather, learn, study and engage with each other. While books will always be part of a library’s core mission, we need to re-evaluate how to meet the changing needs of today’s library users.

For the past year, we had been planning for a renovation using funds that were approved by referendum in 2010. We are meeting regularly with architects to develop conceptual drawings, talking with staff and reviewing results of community focus groups and previous studies of our building. All this work is in anticipation of construction beginning in the spring of 2016.

Many details need to be worked out but as we move forward, the library is committed to keeping the community informed on our progress through our • Bi-monthly print newsletter • Monthly enewsletter • Library website • Postings in the library • Press releases I am tremendously excited about the future possibilities of enhancing and expanding service to our community.

Summer Reading Program

Every Hero Has a Story June 13-August 8, 2015

All Ages. Indian Trails Library residency not required.

Will you accept the challenge? Test your “superhero” powers this summer with the Summer Reading Program! Complete a level and earn great prizes. Even the littlest heroes can participate when a parent or caregiver reads with or to them. Register at the Adult or Kids desks. Prepare yourself for a summer of adventure!

Summer Reading Program Kick-off Day

Saturday, June 13, 10 am-4 pm Costumes encouraged, but not required.

All costumes must be family-friendly and accessory-free.

Drop-in Tabletop Games

10 am-2 pm Ages 5 and older. Challenge your friends and family to a board game at this drop-in activity. A Games Plus staff member will bring games for kids, teens and adults to try. NR

Drop-in Craft and Hero Photo Booth 10 am-3 pm Birth to grade 12. Register for the Summer Reading Program to make a craft and have your picture taken with our super backgrounds (while supplies last). NR

12-2 pm Meet and pose for a photo with our special guest from “We Are Cosplay,” a nonprofit group devoted to costuming. NR

Thank a Hero

10 am - 4 pm All ages. Show support for our true superheroes in life by writing letters of appreciation to overseas U.S. service members. Visit the Adult Desk for supplies. NR

Safe Sitter Babysitting Clinic

Ages 11-14

Wednesday, July 15 & Thursday, July 16 from 9:30 am - 1 pm (both days) Ages 11-14. A non-refundable fee of $28.50 is due at time of registration. This two-day workshop includes instruction on care for infants and children, basic first aid, feeding and diapering, behavior management, and babysitting ethics. Each student receives a kit with an instruction book and backpack. Registering for the first day of class automatically registers you for the second day. High School Book Club: The Young Elites by Marie Lu Thursday, June 11, 7-8 pm Grades 9-12. After a deadly blood fever swept through Adelina Amouteru’s nation a decade before, leaving Adelina and many of the children who survived with strange markings, it was rumored they possessed more than just scars.

Three Ways to Volunteer @ Your Library

Grades 6-12 Volunteer to register children for our Summer Reading Program and hand out prizes. Volunteers work one two-hour shift a week. To become a volunteer, pick up an application at the Kids Desk or apply online at itpld.org on the kids page, and attend ONE MANDATORY training session. Applications must be turned in by May 31 to be considered. R

Wednesday, June 24, 7-8:30 pm A native of Buffalo Grove, Jami Attenberg reads from her newest novel, Saint Mazie, about the bighearted and bawdy proprietress of The Venice, a New York City movie theater located in the Bowery neighborhood.

Attenberg is the author of several short stories and The Middlesteins, which was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Fiction. A book signing follows the program. Refreshments served.

New at the library Creativity and fun shine with new items in Youth Services Two new additions to the youth department – a light table and ipad table – offer children and parents new experiences in learning through creativity and fun. The light table is an illuminated play surface where children can explore colors, letters and other discoveries that promote early literacy skills. X-rays and agate slices are available for learning about the natural world. The ipad table has four full-sized ipads pre-loaded with books and literacy apps and games that encourage reading, writing, singing, talking and playing for ages seven and younger. The light table was a gift from the Children’s Advocates.

Telescope for celestial viewing available for check out Starry nights come into focus when you check out the library’s telescope. A gift from the Lake County Astronomical Society, the Orion Starblast telescope can be checked out for one week from the Information Desk on the first floor by Indian Trails library cardholders, 18 years and older, only. Prior to checking out the telescope, members will watch a brief instructional video and sign a borrower’s agreement.
