Message from the President What an exciting year it has been at the Indian Trails Library District! Shortly after completing our strategic plan last year, staff began crafting core competencies for the individual components of the plan: Services, Community Engagement, Staff, Facilities and Technology.

Meet our new Director On October 28, the library welcomed its new director, Brian Shepard, who comes to us with over 20 years experience in the library field. As the former assistant director and director of operations Indian Trails Library Director Brian Shepard with at the Arlington Heights wife Corinne and children, Joshua and Rachel.

Memorial Library, Brian brings a wealth of technology and construction experience to the position, as well as a deep understanding of the vibrant role libraries play in communities.

With the completion of The Studio, an area reserved for students in grades 9-12, we saw an increase in high school students coming to the library for programs and volunteer opportunities.

Our outreach expanded as we developed more partnerships with community organizations. We continued to focus on new ways to meet the needs of the new citizens and immigrants who use the library. For them, the library represents a vital resource to education, knowledge and materials.

As we near the end of 2013, we look forward to 2014 with excitement and optimism as we welcome our new director, Brian Shepard. Through strong leadership and dedicated staff we can and will achieve great things!

For the third year in a row, library card membership grew. 69% of the district population has a library card.

Our wonderful volunteers helped with programs, materials, book sales, phone calls and more!

The Studio, the library’s high school area, was renovated and became a favorite place for students to hang out.

We launched one-on-one tutorials for everything from how to turn on a computer to how to download the latest ebook.

In-library use of computers dropped as more people accessed the Internet on their smartphones or personal devices.

The Friends of the Library funded the Tech Bar where members can try out eReaders and tablets.

Almost 500,000 hits to the library website.

Boopsie, a free downloadable app, gave members quick mobile access to the library’s event calendar, catalog and member services.

Branch and Outreach Services hosted programs at the Branch and outside venues in the community.

Programs such as Science Sleuths, D.C. Cupcakes and the model train exhibit led to a 12.5% increase in program attendance.

Over 3600 people registered for the 2013 Summer Reading Program, an increase of 25%.

Our genealogy programs blossomed with speakers and a dedicated space in the library, perfect for those who want to discover their roots.

Nearly 1,000 high school students participated in the 2013 high school reading program.

Each participant in the summer program received a free book, courtesy of the Friends of the Library and the Rotary Club of Wheeling.
