ABOUT THE DLSS The Deakin Law Students’ Society (DLSS) is a student-led organisation that is dedicated in representing Deakin’s law students throughout their degrees.

Our portfolios provide students with networking opportunities, academic initiatives, career focused programs as well as organising social events, in order to support students academically and to also enhance student experiences.

Essentially, whether you’re looking to expand your legal skills through competitions, explore career avenues or connect further with peers, the DLSS is here to help you make the most of your time at Deakin!

PRESIDENT Samantha Pauliuk Fifth year - Bachelor of Laws/Arts

Sami is the 2026 President of the Deakin Law Students’ Society and will be entering her fifth and final year of a Bachelor of Laws/Arts (Philosophy, Drama).

This year marks her third with the DLSS, having previously served as Competitions Officer, Sponsorship Officer, and Sponsorship Director. Through these roles, she worked to greatly increase both commercial and non-commercial sponsors for the DLSS, creating more opportunities for students interested in social justice and non-commercial law pathways.

In 2026, she aims to strengthen student feedback forums, support wellbeing initiatives, and foster greater engagement from JD and cloud students across all programs. She is committed to creating inclusive, practical, and engaging opportunities for all Deakin Law students.

VICE PRESIDENT Ava is the Vice President of the Deakin Law Students’ Society (DLSS) and plays a central role in the internal management of the DLSS. Working closely with the President, executive team and wider committee, Ava is committed to fostering a cohesive and supportive committee culture.

Over the coming year, her goals include strengthening internal communication, ensuring clear expectations and accountability across portfolios, whilst also supporting committee members to overcome challenges and fulfil their roles effectively. She prides herself on being an approachable problem-solver, in order to provide support and guidance for all DLSS committee members to ensure that they can effectively produce events and initiatives that fulfil the needs of the student body.

Outside of university and the DLSS, Ava enjoys reformer Pilates, catching up with friends over coffee or prosecco, and doting on her dog, Charli.

Secretary Rachel Thomson Final year Bachelor of Laws/Arts

As Secretary, Rachel oversees all administrative functions of the DLSS. Her role includes coordinating officer recruitment, scheduling internal meetings, and maintaining key governing documents such as the Constitution and Bylaws.

She also serves as a primary point of contact for any enquiries relating to the DLSS.

In 2026, Rachel aims to support the DLSS by ensuring students have access to events and initiatives that help them make the most of their degrees. She plans to build on strong internal governance, streamline administrative processes, and find ways to make the committee run more effectively overall.

Treasurer Pri is the Treasurer of the DLSS for 2026, after previously serving as Communications Officer in 2024 and Communications Director in 2025.

Priyanka Sharma Final year Bachelor of Laws/Commerce

Pri is excited to focus on making DLSS finances clear, organised and stress-free for portfolios, while supporting creative events and initiatives across the Society.

Having been closely involved in publications and student engagement, she looks forward to helping the DLSS continue to grow and deliver meaningful experiences for her peers in 2026.

Finance OVERVIEW The Finance Portfolio within the DLSS is responsible for managing the society's financial affairs, ensuring transparent and effective financial practices.

This includes preparing a yearly budget, overseeing payments for events and expenses, and sourcing funding from faculty and sponsors to support various initiatives.

The team is also tasked with managing reimbursements for portfolio-related spending, ensuring that all financial transactions are tracked and accounted for. Through diligent financial management, the Finance Portfolio ensures the society operates smoothly, remains financially sustainable, and is accountable to its members and stakeholders.

Luke and Bec are the Directors of Sponsorship for 2026.

Luke is going into his third year on the DLSS, having previously been a First Year Representative and a Sponsorship Officer.

Bec is going into her second year on the DLSS having been a Sponsorship Officer alongside Luke in 2025.

In 2025, the DLSS had a record number of sponsors and both Luke and Bec hope to achieve that same milestone in 2026, and continue to promote Deakin Law to firms and organisations across Australia.

As a Directors of Sponsorship, Luke & Bec's main role for the DLSS is to secure sponsorships from law firms and legal organisations, as well as manage sponsors of the DLSS throughout the year.

Sponsorship OVERVIEW The Sponsorship Portfolio within the DLSS is responsible for engaging with law firms and key stakeholders across Victoria to foster strong, mutually beneficial relationships between them and the society.

The team liaises with these stakeholders to secure funding, resources, and opportunities that enable the delivery of valuable events and initiatives for the student cohort. This includes coordinating financial support for events, orchestrating guest speakers, and facilitating professional networking opportunities.

Through these partnerships, the Sponsorship Portfolio enhances student experiences while strengthening the DLSS’s connections within the legal industry.

What’s one DLSS initiative/event should students look forward to?

It is hard to point to just one initiative or event, as the DLSS offers such a diverse range of opportunities for students across all year levels and career interests.

From professional development and career-focused events to social activities and wellbeing initiatives, the DLSS strives to create something for everyone.

We have a new event called Women in the Law that I am really excited for! It will be an amazing opportunity to hear from accomplished women in the profession, and hear their stories and experiences and I think this is something all law students would be interested in!

As President, my leadership style is grounded in access and inclusivity. For me, this means ensuring that every Deakin Law student - regardless of their background, degree pathway, or stage of study - has access to meaningful opportunities, practical support, and a strong sense of belonging within the law school community.

I am deeply focused on delivering events and initiatives that are not only engaging, but genuinely useful, and that reflect the diverse needs and experiences of our student cohort. Access also means recognising that no two students experience law school in the same way.

My approach is always to ask what support is needed and how the DLSS can respond in ways that are tailored, relevant, and student-centred. Equally important to me is ensuring that the DLSS committee itself is supported, empowered, and equipped to succeed. Strong student representation depends on a committee that feels valued, heard, and capable of achieving its goals.

Activities OVERVIEW The Activities portfolio is responsible for delivering the social events for the student cohort, creating opportunities for students to connect and build relationships beyond the classroom. It oversees some of the DLSS’s largest and most anticipated events, including our flagship Annual Law Ball.

Other key initiatives include the O-Week Bar Hop, First Year Law Camp, and the End of Trimester 2 Celebration.

Together, these events aim to create a strong student community and provide students with meaningful opportunities to form lasting friendships beyond their academic experience.

Commercial careers OVERVIEW

Commercial Careers focuses exclusively on careers in commercial law. We support students by providing practical guidance across both the traditional clerkship process and non-traditional pathways that still lead to careers in the commercial space. We do this through a range of events, panel discussions, and publications delivered throughout the year.

Communications OVERVIEW The Communications Portfolio is responsible for managing all written content produced by the DLSS. The portfolio focuses on ensuring information is clear, engaging, and accessible for law students.

Its function within the DLSS is to act as the Society’s informal editorial team by creating, editing, and publishing blogs, guides, and official DLSS publications, as well as managing the DLSS website.

The Communications Portfolio helps maintain a clear written voice for the DLSS and ensures students can easily access resources and make the most of their degree.

Competitions OVERVIEW

The competitions portfolio organises and runs all law based competitions for the society. We have 5 competitions and 2 workshops in total (including one that is brand new this year!).

Its’ function within the DLSS to promote a competitive yet welcoming environment for students to push themselves, whether that be stepping outside of your comfort zone for the first time or further developing your advocacy skills.

EDUCATION OVERVIEW The Education Portfolio aims to assist law students to thrive throughout their university experience. The Education Portfolio uplifts and supports both students’ academics and wellbeing, and acts as a pillar of support and place of contact for all things University related.

INDUSTRY CAREERS OVERVIEW The Industry Careers portfolio operates to inform and educate the Deakin Law student cohort as to the array of legal opportunities and pathways that exist beyond the commercial law sphere.

In 2026, the Industry Careers portfolio aims to provide students with various experiences and practical opportunities, through collaboration with leading industry professionals. These opportunities seek to assist members of the student cohort who are interested in pursuing their legal careers within practice areas, such as crime, personal injury, family, and more!

MARKETING OVERVIEW

The marketing team is the voice, vibe and visual identity of the DLSS. Whilst we don't necessarily run many events or initiatives, we have an even more important job - make them look pretty. Our role is to make sure students hear about events as well as want to engage with them.

At a practical level, the marketing team manages the society's social media pages and branding - working with other teams within the DLSS to translate their events into clear and engaging content. We build the momentum around events and initiatives and ensure the communication is consistent and welcoming (the rest of the jobs we leave for everyone else).

SOCIAl justice and equality OVERVIEW The Social Justice and Equity Portfolio aims to encourage powerful discussions around contemporary legal and social justice issues, as well as encouraging a culture of compassionate, informed, and socially conscious law students.

Our function within DLSS is to create publications and events on various social justice issues, informing the student bodies of these issues, and facilitating student action to both make a difference, and allow students to become involved in the issues they are most passionate about.

Get Involved Want to get more involved in law school beyond lectures and assessments? Do you have an interest in our law competitions, law ball, networking events, as well as opportunities to meet new people and expand your connections?

The best way to get involved with the DLSS is by becoming a member! A DLSS membership gives you access to opportunities and events planned thoughout the year that are catered to enhance your law school experience.

And for those interested in taking on more of an active role, there will be opportunities to join the committee this year, like First Year and JD Representative elections duing Semester 1.
