ABOUT THE DLSS The Deakin Law Students' Society (DLSS) is one of Deakin University's oldest and largest student-run organisations and aims to support Deakin law students in making the most of their degree. The DLSS organises and runs a range of events and services across its portfolios, providing information and opportunities for Deakin law students to be supported academically and socially throughout the year.

PRESIDENT Lucy French Fifth year - Bachelor of Laws Lucy is in her final year of a Bachelor of Laws and works as a Legal Assistant at Brave Legal. Lucy loves all things musical theatre, reformer Pilates, and swimming in the ocean! When she is not studying, you will probably find her at the theatre or reading a good book.

As President of the Deakin Law Students' Society (DLSS), Lucy has taken on the responsibility of leading the society’s strategic planning and external communication. Her decision to apply for the role of President stemmed from a strong desire to make a tangible impact within the student community and to serve as a source of support for her peers.

In the coming year, Lucy aims to implement initiatives that prepare students for their careers while leading the DLSS to new heights. She is passionate about creating opportunities that enhance every student’s university experience— whether through networking, skill-building, or mentorship— ensuring every student feels supported, empowered, and ready to take on their future careers.

Who is your ultimate leadership role model And what makes them stand out to you?

My ultimate leadership role model is my mum. As a leader in her profession, she makes a real difference in people’s lives. She knows how to inspire, support, and bring out the best in those around her—balancing strength and kindness in a way I deeply admire and strive to emulate.

Vice PRESIDENT Emilie Young Fourth year - Bachelor of Laws and Criminology Emilie is in her fourth year of a double degree in a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Criminology. She currently works as a legal assistant at a family law firm and as a swim instructor. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her dog Charlie at the beach and trying out new recipes.

Emilie is the Vice President of the DLSS for 2025. The Vice President is responsible for the internal functioning of the DLSS. The Vice President helps foster a great culture within the committee, which extends to the great Deakin Law Student community. Working closely with the president, the Vice President supports the directors to bring their events to life.

Emilie’s vision for the year ahead is to provide opportunities for students with accessible and informative events. Emilie hopes that this year’s committee and events will inspire the Deakin law student community to explore their potential.

Who is your ultimate leadership role model And what makes them stand out to you?

I am fortunate to be surrounded by many incredible role models, but my ultimate leadership role model is my mum.

She embodies the qualities of a balanced leader, always striving for new heights in her career while ensuring the wellbeing of her team. She extends this leadership style into her personal life, contributing to her community through sporting and school organisations and serving as a role model for her children.

Secretary Jordan Cook Fourth year - Bachelor of Laws and Science

Jordan is heading into her fourth year of a Bachelor of Laws and Environmental Science degree! She works and volunteers as a paralegal, and outside of work, loves playing any type of sport, going to concerts, and travelling. Her last trip was to Darwin, where she loved seeing the rocks and plants!

As Secretary, Jordan looks after all the administrative aspects of the DLSS. This includes organising officer hiring, scheduling internal meetings, and ensuring our governing documents, like the Constitution and Bylaws, are up to date.

She is often the first point of contact for any questions about the DLSS. In 2025, Jordan hopes to continue promoting the DLSS to students, helping them make the most of their degrees. She plans to continue working on internal governance, focus on drafting a sustainability policy for the committee, and aims to ensure the internal administration is running as smoothly as possible!

Who is your ultimate leadership role model And what makes them stand out to you?

My ultimate leadership role model would have to be Ruth Bader Ginsburg! She paved the way for women in law during a time when it was almost unheard of and advocated strongly for women’s rights. I admire how she fiercely stuck to her beliefs, even when she was often in the minority.

Treasurer Sofia Rossi Final year - Bachelor of Laws Sofia Rossi is in her final year of a Bachelor of Laws degree. She juggles two jobs — working as a Legal Assistant at Schetzer Papaleo Family Lawyers and as a Duty Manager at Boroondara Sports Complex. Outside of studying, working, and her involvement with the DLSS, Sofia enjoys travelling, staying active (especially going on "hot girl walks" and hitting the gym), drinking an absurd amount of coffee, and recently getting back into reading. Her personal goal for the year is to pass all her units and, hopefully, cut back on her coffee addiction.

As Treasurer within the DLSS Finance Portfolio, Sofia manages all things finance for the society. Her responsibilities include creating the annual budget, tracking income from sponsors, events, and memberships, and overseeing spending to ensure the society can continue running its incredible events. Operating largely behind the scenes, the Finance Portfolio plays a crucial role in maintaining the society’s financial stability and long-term success.

In 2025, Sofia aims to continue to improve and develop the financial systems used by the DLSS, ensuring strong and transparent financial management throughout the year. She is excited to streamline processes, strengthen budgeting strategies, and support the society’s ongoing growth and impact.

Who is your ultimate leadership role model And what makes them stand out to you?

A fictional character that stands out to me is Dory from Finding Nemo. Although Dory is not in a "leadership" role, she tries to help whenever she can, is a true friend to Nemo, remains optimistic, and just keeps swimming.

Sponsorship CO-DIRECTOR OF Sponsorship

Mckeely Hol Penultimate year - Bachelor of Laws McKeely is entering her penultimate year of her Bachelor of Laws and works as a paralegal in MinterEllison's Insurance & Corporate Risk team. If she is not tucked away with her head in her textbooks, you will most likely find McKeely in a reformer Pilates class or spending quality time with her family and friends.

The role of the Co-Directors of Sponsorship is to facilitate, build, and maintain relationships between the Deakin Law Students’ Society and the various stakeholders with whom the society engages. This positions the Sponsorship portfolio as the intermediary between the various DLSS portfolios and esteemed sponsors. Consequently, the Sponsorship portfolio is heavily involved in both the organisation and running of all events hosted by the DLSS. In 2025, McKeely aims to build upon the success of the 2024 Sponsorship portfolio. She is also focusing her attention on diversifying the offerings of the DLSS to include a wider variety of non-commercial sponsors, such as family and criminal law firms.

Who is your ultimate leadership role model And what makes them stand out to you?

I am very fortunate to have many inspiring leaders in my personal life. I always admire those who make space for others around them and use their position as a leader to help others achieve their individual goals.

Sponsorship CO-DIRECTOR OF Sponsorship

SAMI Paulik Penultimate year - Bachelor of Laws and Arts Sami is a penultimate-year Law/Arts student, with 2025 marking her fifth year at Deakin University, having had the opportunity to begin in Year 12 through the Deakin Accelerate program for Law. Sami is excited to serve as Sponsorship Co-Director this year, aiming to bring more incredible opportunities to students. When not studying or working on sponsorships, Sami can be found working in the realm of Property Law or unwinding by playing The Sims and watching Bob's Burgers.

As Sponsorship Co-Director, Sami collaborates with McKeely to act as the primary point of contact for the firms and organisations partnered with the DLSS. Her key responsibilities include coordinating between portfolios and sponsors to relay essential information for events and initiatives while working to connect students with the firms that inspire them.

Sami is particularly eager to attract sponsors from niche areas of law, ensuring opportunities are available for students with diverse interests—whether in government, family, environmental, industry, or commercial law. She has a particular passion for construction law and hopes to feature a firm specialising in this area!

Who is your ultimate leadership role model And what makes them stand out to you?

As cheesy as it sounds, I believe that instead of being inspired by just one figure, I am inspired every day by the leaders around me. Whether it be at home, work, or within society, everyone has a different way of connecting with others and achieving their goals. I believe there is a lot to be learnt by adapting the good qualities you see in others into yourself.

Sponsorship OVERVIEW The Sponsorship Portfolio within the DLSS is responsible for engaging with law firms and key stakeholders across Victoria to foster strong, mutually beneficial relationships between them and the society. The team liaises with these stakeholders to secure funding, resources, and opportunities that enable the delivery of valuable events and initiatives for the student cohort. This includes coordinating financial support for events, orchestrating guest speakers, and facilitating professional networking opportunities. Through these partnerships, the Sponsorship Portfolio enhances student experiences while strengthening the DLSS’s connections within the legal industry.

OFFICERS Luke Dimopoulos Second year - Bachelor of Laws I am currently in my second year of a Bachelor of Laws, working at a Family Law firm as well as being a Basketball and Tennis coach. I love going to the 'G during footy season to watch the Blues play, but I also really enjoy anything to do with music.

Rebecca Austin Fourth year - Bachelor of Laws and Commerce I am studying a Bachelor of Laws/Commerce and am in my fourth year, currently working as a Paralegal at Maddocks. I love to travel and take every opportunity I can to go overseas. I also enjoy hiking, baking, and I have recently been convinced to start running and play golf.

What was your motivation for joining the DLSS, and what attracted you TO Sponsorship?

Luke: I joined the DLSS to find like-minded and motivated people and loved the idea of Sponsorship, helping to build valuable relationships between the DLSS and law firms.

Rebecca: I joined the DLSS to connect with like-minded students and friends. The Sponsorship portfolio allows me to collaborate, build relationships, and contribute to creating exciting opportunities for students.

Finance OVERVIEW The Finance Portfolio within the DLSS is responsible for managing the society's financial affairs, ensuring transparent and effective financial practices. This includes preparing a yearly budget, overseeing payments for events and expenses, and sourcing funding from faculty and sponsors to support various initiatives. The team is also tasked with managing reimbursements for portfolio-related spending, ensuring that all financial transactions are tracked and accounted for.

Through diligent financial management, the Finance Portfolio ensures the society operates smoothly, remains financially sustainable, and is accountable to its members and stakeholders.

OFFICER RUBY RIGONI Third year - Bachelor of Laws and Commerce I am currently studying a double degree in Law and Commerce. When I’m not working at Peter Alexander or volunteering as a legal assistant, you’ll find me enjoying music, travelling, or hanging out with friends.

What was your motivation for joining the DLSS, and what attracted you TO Finance?

I joined DLSS to become more involved with uni life, make new connections within the law cohort, and level up my skills. I chose Finance because, honestly, there’s something oddly satisfying about crunching numbers and seeing how it all fits together!

Tips on survivng law school We Asked Our Head Exec and Directors for Their Top Tips on Surviving Law School!

Do not let it consume your life. Have friends and hobbies outside of your studies.

I absolutely thrive on to-do lists. Law school can get so hectic with competing deadlines and priorities, so it’s important to keep track of everything you need to get done. Extra points if you use a to-do list app that syncs across all your devices!

Become as involved in university life as possible!

You could join a society (the DLSS!), a club, make friends in classes, or attend an event!

Find a good study group, embrace coffee, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Also, sleep is optional… but highly recommended!

My best tip is to find someone to survive with. Putting yourself out there and finding a friend in class will not only hold you accountable but also give you someone to help you through it!

Build a community around you! Supportive, not competitive.

If I hadn't pursued law, 100% I would have become a teacher. Teaching high school English, especially VCE English, was something I really considered. I love the idea of it so much that I can see myself coming back to this idea, and actually doing it much later on in life.

Harvey Specter (Suits) The Undisputed Winner—It's no surprise he was everyone's top choice!

Obviously, I would go with the one and only Harvey Specter because he would represent me well and look good doing it.

The Harvey Specter and Mike Ross duo, as they could get me out of (almost) anything.

However, I do plan on actually practising law with a degree, though.

Harvey Specter, for his confidence, sharp mind, and drive to win. He can cope with high-pressure situations and is the best closer NYC has ever seen.

I think it would be so wrong to not have the GOAT, Elle Woods represent me. She's just a girl who knows how to win cases, and look fabulous whilst' doing it. #What?Like it's hard - Gurnika

If I ever needed a lawyer, I'd go with Elle Woods—because who wouldn’t want a lawyer who can win a case and explain the ‘bend and snap’ in the same day?

Elle Woods, because I know she would notice the facts that others would skip over (best believe there would be no contesting any issues with the ammonium thioglycolate).

Elle Woods! She is a woman in the law who is of class, skill, intelligence, and an incredible fashion sense. Her strength and determination in the legal world is a true testament to her character as a powerful lawyer.

I am currently studying straight law and hopefully surviving this year! In my spare time, I love exercising, reading, and, most of all, listening to music (way too often—RIP my eardrums).

What do you think the DLSS community should look forward to from Activities?

The DLSS community should definitely look forward to our events, which are designed to provide a fun night of celebration—especially the Law Ball, our flagship event of the year!

Activities OFFICERS Amy Shulz Second year - Bachelor of Laws I am studying a Bachelor of Laws because I watched Suits once and thought, That looks pretty decent! When I’m not studying, I work as a bartender in a pub, so I can definitely give some good cocktail recommendations or pour you a great pint! In my spare time, you’ll either find me dancing or watching all things UK YouTube—Sidemen and George Clarkehave my heart.

Rhea Nguyen Second year - Bachelor of Laws I am in my second year of a Bachelor of Laws. I love to travel, and a fun fact is that I have lived in three different countries! Outside of uni, you can catch me thrifting, enjoying a matcha latte, or simply strolling through the park. My goal is to work in environmental law after uni!

Tarika Shankar Second year - Bachelor of Laws and Criminology I am a second-year Law and Criminology student. I work at TK MAXX and serve on my local council's planning committee. Now for the fun stuff—when I’m not studying, you’ll find me bingewatching TV shows (yes, it’s a hobby), making jewellery, or at the gun range.

What was your motivation for joining the DLSS, and what attracted you TO ACTIVITIES? Amy: I wanted to join DLSS this year to make new friends and be part of a fun community. I’d love to be a part of the Activities Portfolio to ensure the events are fun and accessible to everyone this year!

Rhea: I want to inspire, motivate, and create a welcoming environment for other law students! Joining the Activities Portfolio will allow me to help my peers wind down and have some fun after stressful law assignments and exams, ensuring the events are fun and accessible to everyone this year!

Tarika: I met the best people at Bar Hop in my first year, which encouraged me to join DLSS, especially the Activities Portfolio, and meet even more people.

Commercial Careers OVERVIEW The Commercial Careers portfolio within the DLSS provides Deakin law students with valuable insights and opportunities in the commercial law sector. It aims to educate students on different career pathways, simplify the clerkship application process, and connect them with industry professionals.

DIRECTOR OF Commercial Careers Sanya PATEL Third year - Bachelor of Laws and Science Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am starting my third year of Law/Science, majoring in Chemistry.

I currently work for the Victorian Parliament as an Electorate Officer and, recently, worked with Guide Dogs Victoria as a Guide Dog trainer. Outside of work and uni, you'll find me at the pool, crocheting, watching cricket or footy, or bouldering, which has become my newest obsession! Aside from that, I love TV shows and movies — currently anxiously waiting for the Suits LA spinoff!

What are your goals for this year?

Currently very focused on reaching the next level at the bouldering gym – there are a few pesky ones I can't seem to finish, but I am highly determined!

What is your portfolio About?

The Commercial Careers Portfolio plays a vital role in the DLSS by connecting students directly with employers through networking events, workshops, and publications, providing crucial insights into the industry. The Commercial Careers team hopes to equip students with the skills, connections, and confidence needed to succeed in the commercial law world.

What do you think the DLSS community should look forward to from Commercial Careers?

Commercial Careers portfolio has something for everyone this year —whether you're a first or second-year student looking to build skills and confidence, a fourth or fifth-year aiming to get an edge during Clerkships, or just someone interested in commercial law without necessarily following the clerkship pathway. No matter 19 where you’re at, there’s plenty to get involved in!

Commercial Careers OFFICERS Arkady EYDLISH Fourth year - Bachelor of Laws and Commerce Majoring in Finance, I am drawn to the world of commercial law, particularly Banking and Financial Law! Alongside uni, I work for a food and beverage company that mainly specialises in the café industry (love a good coffee). Outside of campus, you'll find me at the gym, cooking, watching live music, or spending time with my two cats!

Fred Blackall Second year - Bachelor of Laws and Arts I am studying a double degree in law and arts, majoring in sport journalism with a minor in international relations. Outside of university, I love spending time with friends and family, as well as playing and watching sport, mainly soccer and football!

Vaanee Singh Fourth year - Bachelor of Laws and Commerce I study Law and Commerce and currently work at the Federal Court. When I'm not studying, I typically spend my time playing or watching tennis.

VIC Gosios Fifth year - Bachelor of Laws and Commerce I’m studying a combined Bachelor of Laws and Commerce, with aspirations to go to the Bar. I currently only have extensive experience with wine bars… hoping this still counts! When I’m not studying, you’ll find me either playing soccer, exploring cool restaurants, hanging out with my cat, or teaching gymnastics to little ones.

Commercial Careers What was your motivation for joining the DLSS, and what attracted you TO Commercial careers?

Arkady: To open opportunities for others, show students uni is more than readings/textbooks, to meet like-minded people and expand my circle at and outside of uni!

Fred: I joined the DLSS to find a greater sense of community at University, and the Commercial Careers portfolio seemed a great as I am a hoping to pursue a career in commercial sport law.

Vaanee: In terms of joining the DLSS, my motivation was meeting new people and collaborating to create something informative for all students. I was motivated to join the commercial careers team because it focuses on the area of law that I would want to work in.

Vic: The DLSS seemed like a great opportunity to explore the legal sector. I wanted a forum to meet other law students, and learn how to thrive in the legal world. I chose commercial careers as I love the fast paced, analytical nature that is commercial law and hope to work in this field in the future.

I’d trust Amal Clooney to represent me because of her unwavering commitment to justice, expertise in human rights, and her ability to advocate fearlessly for those in need.

I would trust Amal Clooney because she is a top human rights lawyer with expertise in international law, advocacy, and criminal justice, making her a formidable and skilled legal representative.

Gina Liano—not only is she hilarious, but she is an expert barrister in areas of law that I am interested in pursuing, particularly criminal and family law.

Role models The lawyers we trust in the real world— because sometimes, fiction just isn't enough!

Oh, this is tricky! The first people who come to mind are Queen Fidan (obviously) or one of the partners at the firm I work for (he is brutal – so sure for a win!!!).

I would choose my wonderful boss, Emma Turnbull! She’s an absolute girl boss, great role model, kind but honest, and ridiculously talented exactly what I would need to represent me :)

Tips on survivng law school We Asked Our Head Exec and Directors for Their Top Tips on Surviving Law School!

“My best tips for surviving law school is to take good notes, keep a diary to track due dates, and come to DLSS events, as I have learnt so much about things such as Clerkships which I had never heard of before attending these events!”

“Never study on a Friday night.”

“Find your people—they’re the ones who’ll be there through it all, whether it’s totally NOT skipping class for a snack run (kidding… kinda ) or reassuring you that they also haven’t started that assignment due tomorrow.”

Keep it simple and focus on what’s being asked. If you’re like me, the urge to overcomplicate answers to “be absolutely right” can backfire—trust your preparation!

“Have the mindset that university is not the be all and end all. Spending university making memories and building friendships! You will never be this young and free again.”

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m currently studying Law and Commerce, majoring in Accounting, but there’s more to me than textbooks and numbers! I’m a self-proclaimed foodie, always on the hunt for the best new restaurants with friends and family. When I’m not restaurant hopping, you’ll find me on the hockey field or recharging with Pilates and yoga.

What are your goals for this year?

This year, my goal is to fully embrace the art of going with the flow—embracing confidence and taking life as it comes.

What is your portfolio About?

I am part of the Communications Portfolio, which serves as the backbone of all written content within DLSS, combining both information and engagement. We play a key role in creating Damages Incurred, The Memo, Deakin Law Brief, Skills Guide, blogs spotlighting alumni and firms, and our biannual flagship publication, Et Cetera. By managing the DLSS website and all written communications, we ensure members stay connected, informed, and supported throughout their law school journey at Deakin.

What do you think the DLSS community should look forward to from Communications?

Communications OFFICERS Diya Matthew Second year - Bachelor of Laws and Arts I am a Bachelor of Laws and Arts student, balancing life between uni and working as a pharmacy assistant. When I’m not buried in my uni work, you’ll find me reading or listening to music. I’m also passionate about media law and hope to one day practise as an entertainment lawyer!

Molly Howie Fourth year - Bachelor of Laws and Arts I am currently studying a double degree in Law and Arts, with a double major in Public Relations and Journalism. I've been working at a commercial law firm for a few years, which I've really enjoyed, and when not stressing about the next due date, I love netball and reading!

Sophia Qureshi Second year - Bachelor of Laws This is my first year on the DLSS, and I’m so excited for all that Communications will bring you! When I’m not drowning in textbooks, I love reading, playing music, and grabbing a sweet chai with my friends. What was your motivation for joining the DLSS, and what attracted you TO Communications?

Diya: I joined DLSS to get more involved in the uni life.

Communications stood out because I love writing, creating content, and keeping people informed and connected!

The DLSS has been a consistent source of support for me at Deakin, and I was excited to have a hand in shaping it for 2025!

ComPETITIONS OVERVIEW The Competitions portfolio allows law students to develop practical legal skills in a dynamic, supportive environment.

Through various competitions, students can refine their advocacy, research, and public speaking abilities while gaining valuable legal experience. Open to all skill levels, these competitions challenge students to enhance their legal knowledge and build confidence for their future careers.

DIRECTOR OF Competitions Rachel thompson Penultimate year - Bachelor of Laws and Arts

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am the comps director for 2025. I am currently in my second-last year of my studies – scary! I work as a paralegal in an Institutional Abuse team at Gordon Legal. Outside of work and studies, I love playing netball, reading, and hanging out with my friends!

What are your goals for this year?

My goal for 2025 would be to help expand the learning resources the competitions team can provide to students and help develop new workshops for the coming years!

What is your portfolio About?

The Competitions Portfolio aims to help Deakin students develop practical legal skills through competitions like moot courts. Our responsibilities include organising five competitions and workshops to enhance skills in legal advocacy and research. This year, we’re running the Senior and Junior Moot, Client Interview, Bail Application, Witness Examination, and a workshop.

How can the DLSS community Get involved in the Competitions portfolio?

The DLSS community can get involved in the Competitions Portfolio by participating in our exciting competitions! While it may feel nerve-wracking at first, once the nerves settle, you'll learn heaps.

This year, we’re holding five competitions, from moots that require extensive preparation to client interviews, which focus on how well you can extract information from a client. I hope to see you all competing!

ComPETITIONS OFFICERS Gurnika Singh Second year - Bachelor of Laws Aside from being a law student and constantly at uni, you can find me either a) with my family, b) at the gym, c) at karate, or d) in front of a TV watching K-Dramas (all time favourite has to be 'Bloodhounds').

One of my most favourite things in the world would have to be karate.

I have been doing a combat sport for 3 years now and it truly is one of my passions in my life. I constantly find myself bruised and battered after a rough training sesh, but the challenge, community and strength (not just physical, but mental) that it offers, is something so valuable.

Fatima Ibrahimi Second year - Bachelor of Laws and Commerce I am in my second year of Law and Commerce. I work part-time at Bunnings Warehouse and recently started at Myer. Outside of work and studies, I enjoy the gym, hanging out with friends, and spending time with family

Alice DUNNE Second year - Bachelor of Laws and Arts I have recently transferred to Deakin from ANU last year and I am now in second year. I am studying a double degree of Law and Arts, which means I get to have the best of both worlds! In my spare time I love going to music festivals with my friends or heading to the G to watch the blues.

DImitri livadaras Third year - Bachelor of Laws and Science I’m studying a Bachelor of Laws and Science, blending my interest in law with a passion for science. When I’m not focused on uni, I enjoy running, listening to music, exploring different cultures, trying new foods, and travelling to experience new places and perspectives.

Hannah Brodribb Fourth year - Bachelor of Laws I have completed a Bachelor of Criminology at Monash, concurrently with my current Bachelor of Laws! I am working as a legal assistant, running my own small business, working as a manager at a hospitality venue, and love to travel! I have also completed a Diploma of Musical Theatre and continue to maintain this passion!

ComPETITIONS What was your motivation for joining the DLSS, and what attracted you TO Competitions?

Gurnika: A big motivator for me in joining the DLSS was the energy and values it embodies. When I first started as a law student, I admittedly didn’t fully appreciate the value of extracurricular activities like those offered by the DLSS in enhancing the law school experience beyond just academics. It wasn’t until participating in the 2024 Junior Moot that I realised how invaluable these experiences are. While you can put a price on law textbooks, the long-term skills, memories, and connections that you take with you from extracurricular activities during your law degree are priceless. In fact, I was attracted to the Competitions Portfolio through my participation in the Junior Moot.

Fatima: I had such a positive experience as a competitor in last year's Junior Moot, which motivated me to join the DLSS. Alice: I decided to join DLSS and the Comps Portfolio as I have recently transferred and would love to immerse myself in university life at Deakin and meet new people!

Dimitri: My motivation for joining the DLSS stems from a desire to contribute to initiatives that foster practical legal skills. The Competitions Portfolio appealed to me due to its emphasis on advocacy, organisation, and supporting students' growth through experiential learning opportunities.

Hannah: My motivation was to contribute to the success and development of the society and cohort. The Competitions Portfolio allows me to assist in organising impactful and collaborative events.

Exam Revision sessions help students prepare with guidance from high-achieving peers. Acting as a bridge between students, the DLSS, and the university, the portfolio enhances learning and wellbeing throughout law school.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am the Director of Education. Outside of law, I am an absolute sports nuffie - I especially love my cricket and my footy. I work in a warehouse, although I will be looking for a legal job in 2025.

What are your goals for this year?

I want to build upon the momentum that the Education portfolio had last year, and continue growing our events.

What is your portfolio About?

The Education portfolio essentially manages the university side of a law degree, with the portfolio focusing on our three pillars: academics, wellbeing, and exam revision. The Education portfolio helps students get the most out of their university experience through events such as the First Year Crash Course and our Exam Revision sessions.

What do you think the DLSS community should look forward to from Education?

The Education team will be releasing a podcast this year!

Education OFFICERS Alice hillyer Second year - Bachelor of Laws and Commerce I am currently studying a Bachelor of Laws/Commerce, majoring in Human Resources. When I’m not speeding through my lectures at 2x speed, I’m either working as a pharmacy assistant, training with the Deakin dance team, or having a mini dance party while listening to one of my many 20+ hour-long Spotify playlists.

Bill Hondrakis Third year - Bachelor of Laws and Commerce I'm in my third year of Law and Commerce. Outside of my studies, I love playing soccer and going to the gym. I also enjoy cooking and aspire to cook like Gordon Ramsay (minus the temper). My favourite movies are The Lord of the Rings.

Third year - Bachelor of Laws and International Studies Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m the Director of Engagement. I’m currently entering my third year of Law and International Studies, and work as a Legal Assistant in a criminal law firm; Debating and Public Speaking Coordinator; and also at Woolies! I’m from the Mornington Peninsula and absolutely love the beach, playing netball, listening to good music, and yapping!

What are your goals for this year?

Within DLSS, my goal is to focus on excitement and involvement ensuring students feel connected socially within the law faculty, and have access to opportunities to develop their career and legal interests. Outside of DLSS, I hope to be able to go overseas and continue balancing my hectic calendar.

What is your portfolio About?

The Engagement Portfolio is all about creating excitement and accessibility. By attending classes to promote events in-person ( ‘sem-bashing’) the Engagement Portfolio is responsible for ensuring students are aware of DLSS events, feel empowered to attend, and are able to use the DLSS to connect socially and academically with their peers and the wider legal sector.

What do you think the DLSS community should look forward to from engagement?

The DLSS should get keen for our O-week that is coming up at the Burwood Campus on February 24th. For those who sign up for a DLSS membership in 2025, we will have some new & exciting events on offe for you this year to stay tuned for! I moved to Melbourne last year and work a couple jobs, including soccer coaching and hospitality. I love playing soccer, I’ve been learning guitar for close to 10 years now, and I’ve trained MMA since I was about 13!

Mufaro Zhou Second year - Bachelor of Laws Makadii!! (hello in my native language). I’m a proudly Zimbabwean girl who loves to read, watch movies and untangle conspiracy theories about the moon landing! I’m hoping to learn how to make pasta from scratch because Italy is one of the 10 countries I hope to live in.

What was your motivation for joining the DLSS, and what attracted you TO ACTIVITIES?

Ethan: The engagement portfolio seemed like the best way to get involved and get social with people not only within the degree, but within the industry!

Mufaro: When I first got to Deakin I never saw any older law students who looked like me or were from the same place as me so I shied away. I want to show other law students that the DLSS is for EVERYBODY.

Paramedicine! It is completely different but for the first half if year 12 it was what I thought I was going to do! I used to volunteer with St John's Ambulance and really loved helping people and learning first aid.

DIRECTOR OF Industry Careers Ava Conway Third year - Bachelor of Laws and Criminology Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am the Director of Industry Careers. Outside of the DLSS and Uni, you will often find me in a reformer Pilates class or catching up with friends. I am also absolutely obsessed with my gorgeous puppy, Charli, who arguably takes up the majority of my camera roll and has many talents, including singing happy birthday (what can I say, I am a proud mother!)

What are your goals for this year?

My three main goals for the Industry Careers portfolio are to: 1. Prioritise the interests and passions of the student cohort 2. Ensure that the portfolio functions well as a team 3. Continue the success and growth of Industry Careers What is your portfolio About?

The Industry Careers portfolio operates to inform and educate the Deakin Law student cohort as to the array of legal opportunities and pathways that exist beyond the commercial law sphere. Within the DLSS, Industry Careers explores a wide variety of practice areas such as criminal law, maritime law, entertainment law, etc. We achieve this goal through various means, including publications, panels, podcasts, and networking events.

What do you think the DLSS community should look forward to from Industry Careers?

In 2025, the Industry Careers portfolio aims to build on 2024's success by focusing on student interests to ensure our initiatives are valuable.

Industry Careers OFFICERS Emilia Mitropoulos Fourth year - Bachelor of Laws and Criminology I currently work as an Administrative Assistant at Forte Family Lawyers and as a retail team member at Cotton On. I enjoy dinners and drinks with friends, reading, baking, and watching movies and true crime documentaries.

Georgia ward Penultimate year - Bachelor of Laws I am in the penultimate year of my law degree, and outside the chaos of uni, I work part-time as a Law Clerk in Family Law! Beyond my adventures in the legal world, I love playing netball and also enjoy a hit of tennis. I like to think of myself as quite the chef. I have two dogs, Baxter and Boston, who I absolutely adore. If I’m not walking them, you’ll often find me chatting away with a coffee in hand (and if you ever see me without one, there’s something seriously wrong!) or listening to Harry Styles.

Will Marshall Third year - Bachelor of Laws and Arts I am incredibly excited to be a part of the Industry Career's team of the DLSS this year! I am going into my third year of a Bachelor's of Arts/Law, where I am majoring in International Relations and Criminology. In my down time I like reading, going to the gym, cooking and I love true crime documentaries/podcasts!

Industry Careers What was your motivation for joining the DLSS, and what attracted you TO Industry careers?

Emilia: I was previously an officer and thoroughly enjoyed my time on the DLSS in 2024. I also have a particular interest in Industry Careers, as someone who is not motivated by commercial law, and I understand the challenges of exploring niche areas of law.

Georgia: I joined the DLSS to become more engaged in my university experience and to step outside my comfort zone.

Of course, I can’t forget all the wonderful people you meet through the DLSS! As previously mentioned, I work in family law and have done so for several years, which I absolutely love. This drew me to the Industry Careers portfolio, where I could share my interests, collaborate with like-minded people, and explore legal areas beyond the commercial sphere.

Will: I loved all the DLSS events during my first and second years; they had a huge impact on me, and I want to give back by helping current students benefit just as much as I did!

I was tossing up between law school and medical school, as they both involve what I love - providing help to those in vulnerable situations. I decided on law as I fell in love with the incisive nature and the extreme intricacies of the judicial system.

I'm currently studying a double degree in Law/Arts, and I work as a data analyst & political researcher for the Federal Parliament of Australia. In my free time I play soccer & tennis. I enjoy reading at the royal botanic gardens after a solid run of the tan :) What are your goals for this year?

My goals for the year are to travel & explore more places in Australia or Internationally, and to volunteer more in local communities. In terms of the DLSS, I want to continue to build that bridge between the DLSS and Deakin Law students so our Law Students at Deakin can be more informed and involved.

What is your portfolio About?

The Marketing Portfolio is primarily responsible for connecting law students with the society, ensuring that our events & initiatives can be successfully marketed to our students. The Marketing team manages the social media platforms in which the Deakin Law Students' Society utilises to not only connect with Deakin Law students, but also to showcase the incredible initiatives that come out of the DLSS in 2025 and the years to come.

What do you think the DLSS community should look forward to from marketing?

The DLSS should get keen for our O-week that is coming up at the Burwood Campus on February 24th. For those who sign up for a DLSS membership in 2025, we will have new & exciting events on offer this year so stay tuned for! Make sure to follow the DLSS on all of our socials to stay up to date with everything we have on offer! We will also have 2 merch drops throughout the year to also look forward to!

Marketing OFFICERS Emily nguyen Third year - Bachelor of Laws and Arts I am studying a Law and Arts double degree at Deakin. When I'm not studying, I love going to the gym and doing Pilates! In my free time, I enjoy escaping into a good book, especially thrillers. I have two cats that I absolutely adore and try to spend as much time with them as possible. My friends and I love exploring different cafés and attending as many concerts as we can throughout the year. I'm so excited to be on the DLSS and can't wait to meet everyone! <3

Jacob Hooke Third year - Bachelor of Laws and Arts I am in my third year of an Arts and Law degree. I work in multiple roles at the Hawthorn Football Club, focusing on match-day events and membership, while also working at a small pizza shop called Fratellino South Yarra. In my spare time, I enjoy watching and participating in various sports, listening to and creating music, and spending time with friends exploring everything the city of Melbourne has to offer!

lAVENIA gOGA Penultimate year - Bachelor of Laws I am in my penultimate year of Law. I volunteer at a boutique law firm, mentor peers at Deakin, and work as an English tutor. Beyond my studies, I enjoy reading, writing, exploring R&B music, discovering new TV shows, and staying active through Pilates.

Video marketing officer Luci Italiano Second year - Bachelor of Laws I'm Luci! I'm a second-year Law student, and I'm super excited to be on the committee this year! In my spare time, you might catch me thrifting, lifting, or on the mat learning jiu-jitsu. I volunteer at Vinnies op shop, work casually as a receptionist, and create promotional videos for Deakin Uni's marketing team.

Marketing What was your motivation for joining the DLSS, and what attracted you TO Marketing?

Emily: I came across a few DLSS posts on my socials and thought it was such a tight-knit community that created fun content and events — I knew I had to apply! The marketing portfolio is the perfect fit for me because of how much I love creating and posting on socials.

Jacob: I joined the DLSS to enhance student engagement and create a sense of community. The marketing portfolio attracted me as it creatively promotes events with the ability to connect students.

Luci: Right from orientation week, I felt very supported by the DLSS — I was new, and the DLSS was like a guiding light! I was able to get really connected with the cohort through our events and joined the DLSS marketing team to encourage others to get involved too!

social justice & equality (SJE) OVERVIEW The Society Justice and Equity (SJE) portfolio fosters discussions on contemporary legal and social issues, promoting a culture of compassionate, informed, and socially conscious law students. It highlights the law’s role in addressing inequalities and driving meaningful societal change, while advocating for diversity and inclusivity within Deakin Law.

DIRECTOR OF Social justice and equality ben Smith Third year - Bachelor of Laws and Commerce Tell us a bit about yourself.

Amongst studying law and commerce, I work at Ferrari Formalwear in fashion and sales. I also enjoy binge-watching a fantastic TV show, gaming and playing guitar.

What are your goals for this year?

A personal goal of mine for 2025 is to head to Europe over the summer break and complete a unit overseas!

What is your portfolio About?

I am the Director of the Social Justice and Equity portfolio! The role of the SJE portfolio is to raise awareness of issues that affect our community and ensure the law student population at Deakin is knowledgeable and understanding of these prevalent problems. We examine legal questions through a social justice lens or consider issues where the legal system can make an impact to benefit social outcomes.

What do you think the DLSS community should look forward to from SJE? The DLSS should be thrilled about all of SJE's events, including being ready for some fantastic new initiatives! This includes our annual Pro Bono & Volunteering in the Law Expo and our exciting new event for your calendar, the Queer Mixer!

social justice & equality OFFICERS GEnevieve Alexie Final year - Bachelor of Laws and Arts I am in my final year of a Laws/Arts degree, majoring in Anthropology.

I’ve had a few different jobs over the years, ranging from retail to being a casual academic and singing at gigs. I absolutely love Pilates and spending time with my friends when I’m not studying.

Jack Carter Third year - Bachelor of Laws and Commerce I am studying a Bachelor of Laws and Commerce. I work in hospitality and for DNA Recruitment. Outside of law textbooks, I stay active, enjoy beach outings, and hit the slopes for skiing in winter.

Stephanie sparrow Third year - Bachelor of Laws and International Studies When I’m not buried in a textbook, you can usually find me on the netball court. I am very passionate about the teams I coach and their achievements. I am also a very proud dog mum to a 5-month-old puppy.

QUEER officer Maddy Jansz Second year - Bachelor of Laws and International Studies Outside of uni, I enjoy playing and watching sport, especially AFL and cricket. I play and coach cricket in the summer and umpire community AFL in winter. I'm an animal lover and often dream about moving to the country and adopting a ton of shelter dogs.

Genevieve: SJE is an exciting portfolio because I'm interested in systemic inequality and violence. It's also relevant to all areas of law and offers a creative outlet to advocate for many different issues.

Jack: I joined DLSS to become more involved in university life and contribute meaningfully. I chose Social Justice and Equity because I'm passionate about fostering an inclusive, supportive, and equitable environment for everybody at Deakin.

Stephanie: I was motivated to join the DLSS as I was interested in connecting with other law students and the opportunities available to them. I am fascinated by the role of social justice, as I am interested in connecting students to key issues within this area of the law.

Maddy: I am super passionate about the intersectionality of social justice, human rights, and the law, and I believe it is extremely important to celebrate diversity and uplift marginalised voices.

Get Involved The easiest way to get involved is to become a DLSS member to stay updated on all our upcoming work and events.

Events such a panels, competitions, networking nights, publications are all really great ways to meet new people and start participating in University life. If you would like to have a role within the committee, keep an eye out for First Year and JD Representative elections during Trimester 1. DLSS officer applications for 2024 will also open in November.
