What area of law are you most passionate about?

I am deeply passionate about international law! Its broad spectrum of issues and ever-evolving nature have always captivated me. Plus, let's be honest I’m hoping I can use it as my cheat code to ticket to living and working overseas.

If you could have dinner with 3 people dead or alive who would they be?

Picture this: the ultimate dream dinner party line up – the incomparable Robin Williams – no explanation needed, the Anne Hathaway – because she’s a bad ass boss, and of course the most talented person to ever exist Jessica Vosk (if you know who she is I’ll love you forever.)

VICE-PRESIDENT

Bailiejean Hohnberg

Bailiejean is in her final year of her studies and has been on the DLSS committee for three years now. Bailiejean applied to be the 2024 Vice President with the ambition to continue to create a positive and supportive culture within the committee to allow all committee members to have the same great experiences she has had as a committee member.

In 2024, Bailiejean wants to work alongside the Upper Executive to continue to grow the DLSS and support the Directors in their pursuits to host incredible events and create exciting initiatives for students. Previously, in her role as the 2023 Industry Careers Director, Bailiejean and her officers doubled the size of their flagship event - An Evening With the Industry Professionals and saw their podcast production efforts result in a 50% increase in listeners to the DLSS podcast 'Before the Court'. In 2024, Bailiejean cannot wait to watch portfolios continue to see positive outcomes from their work like these ones.

I am passionate about this area as I did not recognise the entitlements workers are entitled to, even on a casual level, until I completed the unit. If only I knew about my rights back when I was made to come in fifteen minutes early for a shift !!

TIPSFOR SURVIVING LAWSCHOOL!

fromourcommittee members

Literally just make sure that you ' re at every Seminar. Showing up is half the battle

Don't have it consume your whole life. Obviously university should be a 'priority' but it should not be your 'life'.

Believe in yourself! You’re a law student and that in itself is such a huge achievement. You would not be in this position if you weren’t capable or smart enough, so always trust yourself!

Ensure that you don't lose your passions outside of law school! It can be super demanding at times, but having outlets and doing the things that you love will allow you to have breaks and not burn out.

Take it one step at a time - Law school can be extremely overwhelming and you can easily fall into a trap of comparison. Best advice is to take each subject, assignment, lecture one step at a time and break it down into attainable goals. Keep moving forward, no matter how small and be kind to yourselves

Ask as many questions as you can! Lecturers are always there to help.

download the Forest app…for the small price or $6.99 you will be so much more productive.

TURNITIN is your BEST FRIEND. Use it for every assignment to check for plagiarism even if you think you haven’t, double, triple check!! It’s such a helpful tool to avoid academic misconduct.

Study with others! Means you ' ve got people to help fill in the blanks in your knowledge, read the AGLC4 to you, and then go out with after exams!

Download the Forest app… for the small price or $6.99 you will be so much more productive.

I know first-hand that this makes the remainder of one’s law school journey more pleasant.

TIPSFOR SURVIVING LAWSCHOOL!

fromourcommittee members

Make friends with likeminded people.

Getting really good at lying to yourself that spending $1000's on textbooks is worth it because if there is ever a wobbly table around that needs a few more cm ' s to stabilise it - boy do we have a totally price appropriate and convenient solution!

Join the DLSS! And just take any opportunity you can to find your people!

Be proactive! Understand the requirements of every unit & assessment ahead of time and prioritise according to how you work best!

Planning ahead and recognising times where you will be busy will help you in the longrun!

Go to class. It's very cliche but it is genuinely the best way to stay motivated and stay on top of your workload.

Have a hobby to take your mind off studying.

Take GREAT notes!

Staying ahead of your readings!!! so easy to fall behind.

Honestly, the friends I have made at uni get me through each Tri (shoutout Julia Fittipaldi).

Do not be afraid to underload in times where you are faced with multiple challenging units. You can always pick up the progress you may have missed in T3.

Surrounding yourself with a supportive and positive network of friends who motivate and encourage you to succeed.

Lets take a small break from all the formalities and remember that being a law student isn't always just about deciphering statutes and case law; it's also apparently about using our knowledge to create our own laws. So when our committee members were asked; “If you had to create a law for Deakin Law Students, what would it be?” Here’s what they came up with!

Deakin Law Students Act 2024

WHEREAS it is recognised that Deakin Law students often require sustenance, particularly in the form of coffee, to maintain their academic endeavours and mental well-being;

AND WHEREAS the enhancement of the law student experience at Deakin University is deemed a priority.

BE IT ENACTED by the Parliament of Deakin University as follows:

Section 1: Cafe Subsidy

1.1 The Little Bang Subsidy Act is hereby established, providing all Deakin Law students with a weekly subsidy of fifty dollars ($50) to spend at Little Bang Cafe.

1.2 Said subsidy shall be redeemable solely at Little Bang Cafe for the purchase of coffee and associated refreshments.

Section 2: Free Coffee Provisions

2.1 All Deakin Law students shall be entitled to receive one (1) free coffee per week from any Cafés on campus.

2.2 If in the event of a class exceeding its scheduled duration by one (1) hour or more, all Deakin Law students attending said class shall be entitled to a complimentary coffee during the subsequent break.

Section 3: Free Food Provisions

3.1 All cafes on Deakin University campuses shall provide free food to Deakin Law students during designated hours of operation.

Section 4: DLSS Requirements

4.1 Mandatory attendance at the Deakin Law Ball is hereby established for all Deakin Law students.

DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS

Jordan Cook

Bachelor of Laws/Environmental Science (3)

Tell us about your portfolio!

My portfolio is Communications, and we are responsible for handling all the written work for the Society. This includes the publications, from our bi-annual magazine Et Cetera, and summer guides such as The Memo and First Year Guide, to our weekly satire blog, Damages Incurred! Further, we are responsible for the website and managing its up-keep and design, and little odd jobs like taking headshots and managing our Spotify account!

What are your goals for your portfolio in 2024?

In 2024, Communications has the goal of focusing on engagement with students. We are looking at printing both editions of Et Cetera this year, with one edition collaborating with the event of another portfolio, and the other having its own launch event for the first time ever, aimed at informing and engaging students whilst considering important legal issues. Further, we are looking to build on our newsletter and website to ensure that students are aware of the initiatives and events produced by us. Lastly, we will continue our current initiatives including our guides and satire blog, to ensure students are well-prepared for University life and to bring lighthearted humour to our studies.

What area of law are you most passionate about?

I am most passionate about Environmental law. I have been fortunate enough to travel all around Australia and internationally, seeing the beautiful world we live in, and studying environmental science has shown me how much more we could be doing to protect it. I hope that studying law will provide me with the platform to push for more legislation to be introduced to help protect and save the environment.

If you could have dinner with 3 people dead or alive who would they be?

I would have dinner with Steve Irwin, Nancy Wake and Billie Eilish.

What should we look forward to in 2024?

In 2024, students will be able to get involved with Communications in multiple ways. Firstly, look out for student submissions for Et Cetera! Publishing a written piece is an excellent way to get exposure in the legal profession. Further, look for our two Et Cetera events, firstly our collaboration event with another portfolio, and secondly, our inaugural launch event where you will be able to be involved in a panel concerning relevant legal issues. For both events, you will also be able to keep a printed edition of the magazine. Lastly, keep an eye out for our blogs, guides and newsletters and make sure you stay up to date with our website.

TIPSFOR SURVIVING LAWSCHOOL!

fromourcommittee members

Keep timemanagement in mind from the beginning. Never underestimate how easy it is to fall behind.

Have a well planned schedule, know when everything is due as well as making time for yourself.

Go to campus!! I know it can be a pain but you bump into so many people you know/meet new people. It's a really good way to get to know the various characters of the Deakin Law School!

Participate in as many extra curricular activities as you can! This will allow you to have an enriching experience at law school as you will make many friends, make professional connections and further develop your skills far beyond what you could ever develop in the classroom.

Surround yourself with good friends - people who will help keep you on track and working towards your goals, but also friends who you can relax and have a good time with. the best part of law school so far for me has been meeting so many amazing people who also share my passion for law.

Join the DLSS! You’ll make friends so quickly and coming to Uni won’t seem so boring. You’ll be excited to catch up with friends

Binge watching suits whenever exam season comes around

Do not compare where you are at with anyone else in Law School because everyone is on a different path. You will end up in a good spot if you complete your own journey!

My biggest piece of advice is that law textbooks are actually more helpful than you think!
