It’s About to Get Western...(a Gary P. Nunn reference) Some of our recent ads and e-blasts have thanked you, our members, for already having made this year’s International Championship Show & Convention a success. Those were not a gimmick, but a sincere word of “thanks.” As of the writing of this letter, we have exceeded the 600 entry mark. In a year of screwworm scares, some entire regions electing to leave their cattle at home altogether, and $6+/gal. diesel prices – that is quite an accomplishment. Yes, we are going to have one heck of a good time come Glen Rose in October, and I hope that you are planning to join us. It’s not too late to plan the trip. It is my intent to sincerely thank many, many people at this year’s Banquet; but inevitably I will forget some. I will mention just a few of them here; because I’ve been blessed with a core group that has simply gone above and beyond, and I cannot take the chance that my memory fails me with them at the Banquet. Larry Smith is the best Show Chair anyone could ask for and has worked his tail off for me and for you. He’s devoted hundreds of hours, folks. And from ads, to registrations, to Show entries, to creative ideas, Kenzie and Ren at Headquarters are doing a stellar job...and it’s their first Show. Likewise, Sarah Frank is the mastermind behind many of the ads you’ve seen and commented about on Facebook – and that’s not even in her job description! I communicate with this wonderful team almost daily (sometimes many, many times daily); and combined, they make me look good. They do it for the love of the ITLA, and I would like to think in maybe a small part because they like me ok. They are incredible, and I sincerely thank all 4 of them. If you’ve ever been involved in preparing a Show, you know the stresses that can occur, but you also know the “sweet spot” when the plans are completed, the work is done, and it’s finally just time to enjoy...showtime. We are there. So, come to Glen Rose and celebrate Texas Longhorn cattle with us. Bring an attitude of camaraderie and fun. Bring an attitude of good sportsmanship and fairplay. And together, let’s show the world how the ITLA’s members embody one of the last, best representations of what it means to truly live out the western spirit. Thank you to everyone participating in any way in this year’s International Championship Show & Convention. May God bless you, your Gang and your cattle as you travel to Glen Rose, Texas. I can’t wait to see you. It’s about to get real western!

Taking Awards Up a Notch...or Two by Brad Westmoreland At this year’s International Championship Show & Convention (October 7-10, Glen Rose, Texas), those who place high in our various live cattle Shows are in for quite a treat. This year the ITLA contracted with sculptor Erik Eichhorn of Eichhorn Custom Design in Minooka, Illinois to hand-craft and sculpt beautiful Texas Longhorn busts to be awarded to our Grand Champion All Age and Reserve Grand Champion All Age winners. I got to know Erik a few years back when he did some custom work for a rat rod truck Anne and I had purchased for our oldest daughter, Camilla; and from there a friendship developed. While his work showcased on Etsy may be viewed as...unusual to the typical Texas Longhorn producer, Erik is a genius when it comes to art and embraced this challenge wholeheartedly. I think you’ll be very pleased with the results, maybe more so if you know what was involved in the creative process. Creating the busts (each of which is slightly unique and handcrafted) was a true labor of love that involved no fewer than 8 working hours per bust (not including all of the initial work and set-up). Keep in mind, each of these steps were performed 28 times to create each individual bust! To begin, Erik had to create the original wax mold based on the loose vision that I gave him. I wanted something different from traditional busts that we’ve seen in years’ past and that reflected the modern “trend” for longer tip-to-tip, lateral growth. And selfishly, I wanted a bull. So, the result is a robust-looking bull shoulder mount (that I don’t mind telling you was based on several different famous bulls, one of which is my own that you may get to see in Bull Bonanza...but I digress). After we agreed on the general shape of the bust, then Erik had to create

a two-piece silicone mold of it. Wax was then poured into the mold; and once hardened and cooled, Erik had to clean it up, carefully sculpt the finer lines and details, and add vents and sprues using his strong creative mind and hands. Once Erik got the wax mold looking the way he liked it, he then dipped it into a slurry which was then coated with silica dust; and this process was repeated 5 times to ensure a sufficiently thick coat. From there, things heated up significantly when Erik would place the model into a burnout kiln, heating it up to 1800 degrees in order to remove the wax and harden the silica slurry mixture to a white, glass-like shell. Erik then melted a heavy-based aluminum at 1500 degrees and poured it into the hardened slurry molds while they were also still hot. Once the shell cooled sufficiently, Erik broke it off and then got down to the business of cleaning it up and fine-tuning the sculpture with a series of hand grinders, flapper disks, and wire wheels. He then buffed the sculpture to an enviable shine, and added black patina to show depth where appropriate. Finally, at my request he carefully drilled a hole in the base of the sculpture and epoxied a stud into it so that it could be mounted on a beautiful wooden base. The end result is absolutely something worth winning.
Per Erik: “Folks at your Show should appreciate that each piece is truly unique because it is all handmade. No two will be exactly the same. In keeping with the international nature of your Association, these will be the only ones like them in the world.”

I want to thank Erik Eichhorn for his hard work, for his dedication to this rather large, intimidating project, and for allowing us to showcase his beautiful art at this year’s International Championship Show & Convention. “Congratulations!” in advance, to those who win one of his unique Texas Longhorn sculptures. You will like it. To follow Erik, check out his EichhornCustomDesginShop on Etsy,. Give him a call at (815) 482-9439. Email him at eichh@aol.com And be sure and tell him that “Brad says ‘hello’ and the truck is running great.”

Your Greenhorn Is Showin’ If you’ve never shown a Longhorn, but said that it ain’t work Then you’ve never been stepped on or felt the lead rope jerk. You’ve never sweet-talked a heifer so she won’t give you her horn Nor developed a bond with her since the day that she was born. You’ve never placed a rope halter on a big ol’ Texas steer. Never seen him eyeball you, never felt that twinge of fear That the boy could flat gore you, if he was simply of a mind. So to keep him from a tryin’, you’ve never spoken to him kind. You’ve never spoken real gentle, never made some minute moves, Never ducked under horns nor dodged rock-sharpened hooves. Heck, you may’ve never seen mornin’ when it was still night! Or worked with your cattle ‘til eve’s fading light. Teachin’ ‘em. Trainin’ ‘em. Becomin’ their friend. Brushin’ ‘em. Washin’ ‘em. The chores never end. So if you say that showin’ Longhorns is just sweet breezes blowin’, Hoss, you’d best say it real quiet...’cause your greenhorn is showin’.

The Art of the Breeder By: Craig Perez
The Back Alley The headlights cut through the heavy Texas humidity, illuminating the dust kicked up by the truck ahead of you. It’s 5:30AM. In three hours, the gates to the premier sale of the season will open, and hundreds of breeders will flood the alleys with coffee cups and catalogs in hand. They will head straight for the same three pens – the ones housing animals featured on the front covers of the industry magazines. You don’t turn toward those pens. You park the truck, pull a battered notebook from the dashboard, and walk toward the back alleys where the lighting is dim and the crowds don’t gather. You aren’t here to buy what everyone else is talking about. You are here to find the asset they don’t even know is standing there.
The Trap The most expensive psychological trap in the Longhorn industry is Herd Mentality. It’s a simple, dangerous loop; a certain bloodline wins a big show or tops a high-profile sale, the social media echo chamber explodes, and suddenly, every breeder in the country decides they must have a piece of that specific genetic pie. The problem? By the time a trend is obvious enough for the masses to chase it, the true wealth-buildig opportunity has completely evaporated. When you buy into the peak of a visual fad, you are paying a massive, artifical premium driven by tempory hype. You aren’t investing in value; you are subsidizing someone else’s marketing campaign.
The “Dormant Giant” True profitability belongs to the contrarians – the breeders who can spot a “Dormant Giant”. Finding the Dormant Giant is spotting an outlier that no one sees coming but changes everything. In livestock genetics, a Dormant Giant is an animal that possesses an extraordinary, compounding production trajectory but is currently priced like an average animal because its color, its horn shape, or its breeder’s name doesn’t fit the industry’s temporary visual flavor of the month. To find a Dormant Giant, you have to strip away the ego of the industry. Data has no friends, no favorite ranches, and no special media accounts. While the crowd looks left at the loudest name in the room, an impartial, non-biased look at numbers allows you to look right – fousing strictly on the D R O V E R

hard, unvarnished baseline metrics that prove where an animal will actually be in three years.
The 20-Year Compass This is why I spent over twenty years and tens of thousands of horns manually logging, tracking, and dissecting the life metrics of this breed. I didn’t do it follow the trends; I did it to build compass that could see through the smoke of marketing. Because the Gallery of Horns and Gallery Factoids were built one manual entry at a time, they hold the baseline map of what true excellence looks like before it hits the mainstream radar. They are the ultimate weapon agaist herd mentality, allowing you to identify the genetic anomalies that the crowd is walking right past. Look at bulls like Sam Chex 708, Mr. Big Stuff, or Powerwagon. These bulls displayed immense potential with staggering statistics with minimal offspring. Sam Chex 708 was thought to be well past his peak. Then a visionary saw his potential by looking at the numbers. Data doesn’t lie. He followed the math and the industry responded. One moment is all it took to breath life into the Dormant Giant. Today breeders around the world have used Sam Chex 708 and the data is showing it. M.C. Mr. Big Stuff is just starting to awaken. While Powerwagon is just being uncovered.

M.C. Mr. Big Stuff
The Data Playbook If data is boring, let’s talk about money. Every major competitive field has gone through this exact same revolution. It is not unique to Longhorns. They have simply been faster, quieter, and more profitable about it. Take Major League Baseball. For a century, teams paid massive premiums for players who looked like movie stars – the obvious home run hitters and fast runners. Then came the Moneyball architects who looked past the noise. They realized the critical, yet undervalued, metric was On-Base Percentage (OBP). They systematically purchases “Dormant Giant” players – visually awkward, non-traditional athletes with the elite OBP who were criminally undervalued. The result was a radical competitive advantage that saved teams millions and earned owners billions. They found the true difference between a high-value program and one chasing its tail. D R O V E R

Execution Every breeder can read a catalog and see the same great names (the equivalent of every NFL team having the same strategic playbook). But success isn’t defined by having a great playbook; it’s defined by flawless execution under pressure. The Super Bowl teams aren’t simply running betterr plays; they are tracking minute details like a lineman’s consistent pressure tolerance or a reciever’s precise route geometry, week after week after week. Over 20,000 hours of manual data entry didn’t just track measurements – we tracked that genetic execution over an animals’s entire lifespan. It is the cold, hard, consistent data that predicts the next champion, not the latest glossy photo.
Three Bulls, One Event, Three Paths At 2 years old, JP Rio Grande was measured on his birthday at the Horn Showcase, 62.5" tip to tip. A record for his age. Two other bulls hid in the nuumbers. Peacemaker 44 and WS Jamakizm. WS Jamakizm was a good 4" behind JP Rio Grande at the same age. Despite the lead, WS Jamakizm would fly to 80" as the youngest waiting years for Rio to get there. The spotlight would stay on Rio for most of his life. WS Jamakizm was a Dormant Giant that wouldn’t awaken until the end of his life. After his demise, he continued to grow in popularity until he matched the fame of JP Rio Grande. The bull no one saw coming, Peacemaker 44. He was an unusual sight for his age. Larger than most in his class in nearly every way. Yet, he was overlooked and overshadowed by the likes of JP Rio Grande and WS Jamakizm. However, it was his genetics that would help JP Rio Grande make the longest horned bull in the world possible. He didn’t do it with style, and he didn’t do it with precision, he wasn’t first to anything, but he was consistent. That consistent production led to a little luck and the right opportunity for the ultimate greatness to occur. The creation of Cowboy Tuff Chex happened with one incredible 2 year old and an unknown youngster. Three bulls, one event, and three paths all leading to greatness. Today, two are still kown by everyone. The third was part of greatness but for all intent purposes, dormant.

Clarity to Conclusion The paths of JP Rio Grande, WS Jamakizm, and Peacemaker 44 prove one immutable truth: the pedigree is a lie until you apply the right lens. The crowd celebrated the immediate leader, focused on the two-dimensional picture. The patient data architect saw the Dormant Giant (WS Jamakizm) waiting for his inevitable, data-backed rise. The true wealth builder saw the consistent, persistent execution of the “third” bull (Peacemaker 44), which was foundational, unseen, and essential to making the longest horned bull in the world possible. Wealth in this industry isn’t made by standing where the crowd is standing today; it’s made by investing in the blueprint that everyone else will be forced to follow three years from now. The easy money is always made before the spotlight hits. To find the next legendary sire or dam at a massive discount, you must master the art of looking where others refuse to look. The data has been compiled , the trends are clear, and the unseen waiting.
Over to You The tools are now in your hand. The secret to wealth in this industry is not found in the crowd or in the spotlight, but in the quiet discipline of data. You now have the blueprint to stop subsidizing other people’s marketing campaigns and start engineering you own multi-year competitive advantage. The time for herd mentality is over. What Dormant Giant are you overlooking? Which bull are you dismissing because he doesn’t fit the current visual fad? How will you use the cold, hard data to out-execute the competion today?

Macen Rogers 2026 ITLA Little Miss
Hey ITLA! Im super excited for the championship show this year; I c a n ’ t b e l i e v e t h a t i t ’ s s o c l o s e . T h i s w i l l b e m y n e w h e i f e r, Belle’s first show as well as out other two calves. I also have been thinking about what to do for the art contest and photography contest. There are so many great ideas to chose from! School has started for me and on top of my work at home, we also joined a homeschool co-op. If you don’t know what a co-op is, it is a joint effort between many homeschool families to provide classes above and beyond our at-home s t u d i e s . W e m e e t o n c e a w e e k a n d s o f a r, I ’ v e b e e n e n j o y i n g it. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at Champs next month!
