Are You Getting Excited? The 2026 International Championship Show & Convention being held in Glen Rose, Texas is now less than two months away. Time flies! I hope that each of you are planning to attend and are getting as excited about it as I am. Not only will we have a world-class facility, we also have world-class cattle being shown by world-class exhibitors! We also have so much “convention” planned – there will literally be something for everyone to enjoy. We are e-blasting and posting about it on social media virtually every day, so check your inboxes and Facebook for frequent updates. The registration deadline for most events is September 9th, so get your entries in soon. I also want to thank each of you for your patience with our new CattleDrive database which has taken the place of iRegister. The de-bugging process is nearly completed, with 95% of the registration portion of the database working as it was designed to work; and mainly only occasional issues arising from time to time relative to individual animals (which carry over from iRegister, actually). As we get closer to the planning stages for next year’s various shows, we will be implementing the show-planning portion of CattleDrive and trust that it will be of great benefit to our Headquarters Staff and our Affiliates as well. Please plan to attend the seminar being put on by Kenzie Woycheshin at this year’s Convention in October where she will walk you through CattleDrive and other office-related processes. Finally, while I will miss our retiring Board members (Gary Lake, Mike Tomey, Micha Hamersky, and Jeremy Johnson), I want to say a word of “congratulations” to Lizz Huntzberry-Fosheim, Ezra Long, Doug Burris, and our friend from down under Wesley Offord, all of whom will be coming onto the Board in October, as well as Brett Kot and my VP Dr. Keith Berkeley who will be serving another term with us. I encourage you to take the time to reach out to these folks and tell them “thank you” for being willing to serve – it’s a labor of love. Speaking of love, let’s try to show a good dose of that to one another this month, as we try our best to do our best. May God bless you and your gang in that effort.

TO MAKING IT COUNT

BY: ANNE WESTMORELAND “For you are fearfully and wonderfully made.” Psalm 139:14 God created the world and everything in it: the first inventor! Let us always be thankful for his creation as we reflect on our own blessings – especially the freedom that we share as Americans. Certainly we also owe a debt of gratitude to those brave men and women who have had the courage to serve our great country and have fought to preserve our American freedoms. Inventors, like soldiers, are an extraordinary breed of humanity who seem to never be fine with mediocrity. Rather, akin to our desire for our beloved Texas Longhorn breed of cattle, inventors are all about improvement and changing the status quo. Webster defines an inventor as “a person who creates, designs. or discovers a new device, process, method, or article that never existed before. They use their ingenuity and experimentation to solve problems or improve how things are done. Also a pioneer, a planner, or an innovator.” As Americans celebrate our nations 250th birthday this year, let’s for a moment tip our hats to just a few of those great entrepreneurs who have improved life for generations of Americans. In the field of agriculture, there’s Eli Whitney, whose cotton gin doubled the efficiency of cotton seed/fiber separation in 1793. In the area of transportation, we have the Wright Brothers who are credited with starting the modern age of air travel in 1903. Thomas Edison – credited with being the most important (and prolific) inventor of our time – introduced the light bulb in 1879. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, Henry Ford the Model T automobile, and Samuel Colt the revolver that bears his name. Of course there’s Charles Babbage who is credited with inventing the analytical engine – the predecessor to the modern computer – in 1837. And last but not least, where would many of us be today without our iPhones – introduced by Steve Jobs in June 2007? Truly, Americans have contributed to some amazing inventions over the past 250 years. But what about inventors in the Texas Longhorn industry? You know the ones:; the folks staying up all night, planning and developing, so that the next time we work our herds we can do it 10 times better or faster than we have before? Or the ones who have worked diligently to give us market data that we can find easily on our computers or phones? In preparing this article it was my pleasure to speak with three such inventors in our industry. Read on to find out what they had to say!

DAROL DICKINSON After reading Webster’s definition of “inventor,” my mind immediately went to someone many of us know well (or at least know of well), Mr. Darol Dickinson. Though he is very busy, Darol took the time to share some of his vast knowledge with me – and I’d like to pass along some of that here. First, Darol has invented an affordable Texas Longhorn cattle working chute called the “Bry Chute” for those needing to work with smaller herds. It was a true labor of love, and didn’t just appear overnight. When asked about working chutes, Darol said “You don’t have to buy the most expensive one. Buy the one you need for the size of the herd that you have.” That was the inspiration for the Bry D R O V E R

chute. But did you realize that Darol also designed a cattle trailer with a stronger roof to avoid Texas Longhorn cattle punching holes through the top? “If something doesn’t work, make a better one!” might be a motto that could be assigned to Darol Dickinson! When asked about his inventive proclivities in general, Darol said “We have to work with our neighbors, not compete with them. How can we expect to do business with someone we are competing against? So, we have to look at procedures and see if what we are doing is right. We have to make sure our long-term plan is working in the long run.” Inventing new strategies – new ways of doing things – is one way he encourages us to remain successful as Texas Longhorn producers; and this can sometimes be done through partnerships. By way of example, Darol spoke of a welder who is a marvel at building trailers...but doesn’t have the skill to haul one or know what is truly needed by the end-user. Whereas the welder’s neighbor may be great at hauling...but can’t weld. Apart, these two folks are limited in their abilities; but together, by forming a partnership, they can develop a business strategy and a trailer that exceeds anything in the market. Those are thoughtprovoking words. What talents and skills do you have that might pair well with a partner and enable the creation of something new and needed?

CRAIG PEREZ The next inventor I’d like to highlight is Craig Perez of the well-known Arrowhead Cattle Company. Craig learned everything he knows about Texas Longhorns from scratch. While interviewing Craig, he spoke of thousands of hours spent driving across the country, visiting ranches and taking pictures of Texas Longhorn cattle, soaking up any information or tidbits that ranchers would share with him along the way. It took him a lot of time, but through his travels (and undoubtedly a lot of trial and error), he learned how to measure horns without a chute. Craig says that he started “The Gallery of Horns: because his friend wanted him to search for a particular animal; so Craig traveled to take photos and measurements. He would locate the sire, the dam, and sometimes the entire family tree living in single fields together. At other times, if he was unable to determine the entire pedigree by going from ranch to ranch and reviewing his own methodically kept records, he would search through the records and photos of the ranchers he visited to help fill-in the missing pieces of the puzzle. Craig also spoke to me of doing his own research on herd sires by calling well- known breeders and asking them questions about their bulls. He then started making spreadsheets to keep track of everything he had learned. Eventually he ralized that he had accumulated years’ worth of hard-won information, but questioned what he should do with it. Should he keep that information to himself, or should he share it with others? Thankfully, he chose to share it with everyone – for free. He started his website with a pedigree link so that anyone can open it and see an animal’s pedigree free of charge. He started “Club69” for bulls as a way of tracking bulls’ horn measurements, which Craig still verifies himself. Likewise, he created “Club69” for cows, where he manually inputs all of their data to this day. When asked about his work, Craig said that he truly enjoys offering a resource to the Texas Longhorn industry as a way of promoting the breed and providing accurate information. He calls what he does a “Labor of Love,” and the truth of that statement is evident in the endproduct that he has made available to everyone. Craig also calls himself a “Texas Longhorn Data Scientist,” and the title seems to fit. But don’t get Craig wrong: he’s more than just a “data scientist:” he knows Texas Longhorn cattle. In speaking with him, he reminisced about “Ol’ Man Wes Watson,” who helped shape his talents and ignited his passion for being able to walk into a herd and identify non-obvious genetic traits and lineage simply by looking at the animals. So if you have questions about genetic diversity or “fit” that might work with your existing herd to achieve certain goals – you may want to give Mr. Perez a call.

MATT KING Inventive inspiration can come upon you at any moment. As proof of that, consider, Matt King, the designer and creator of the revolutionary “No Bull” Horn Measurement Tool. Matt recounted to me that the very first time he thought of making the “No Bull” was at the Horn Showcase. The famous steer Bucklehead BCB was there that year to be measured for entry into the Guiness Book of World Records. Yet, the promoters could not make a straight line with the tape measurers they were using, no matter what angles they tried. That day Matt set out to develop a tool that would measure tip-to-tip accurately and with no guessing. He spent countless hours in research and development, trial and error. At first, in 2023 and the beginning of 2024, he

sold just a few all told, But, he sold around 50 at the 2024 Horn Showcase; and now he gets consistent orders year-round. Matt set out to develop a more consistent way to measure a Texas Longhorn’s tip-to-tip horn growth, and believes that through much persistence he has truly accomplished that goal. His determination and hard work finally paid off. So you never know: like Matt, you might have your own “lightbulb moment” just by attending the ITLA’s International Championship Show and Convention this year, and thinking of a better way to do something! In honor of these three great, inventive pioneers of our industry – as well as those amazing American inventors who have gone on before them – let us all keep challenging the status quo and finding ways to make it better. And as Americans continue to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday this year, let us also keep in rememberance those 650,000-1,000,000 brave soldiers who have died so that we can continue to have the freedom to create, to invent, and to improve our lives in the country. And let us all remember that at the heart of the number that matters is the number one: We all have just one day – today. Take advantage of it. Tell your children and your spouse today how much you appreciate them. Use today to smile at a local worker you come in contact with. Today, be grateful for the blessings you’ve been given. And today, consider letting go of the wheel and reinveting yourself and your usual way of doing things! Make your life count, today. Who knows, by starting today, tomorrow you could be the next great inventor in the Texas Longhorn industry.

I nearly stepped on the little feller As he lay there in the grass Since his hide was brown and yeller I almost missed him as I passed. I immediately looked around me But his ma was not in sight. So I scooped him up real gently Whilst looking backward, left and right. On that stretch it was pretty hairy So I never did find his ma Though I searched each hill and prairie And every gorge, plateau, and draw. So I took the kev back to my camp (Populated by only me) Where I did my best to raise the scamp Like I’d’ve wanted to be. Well, that kev and I grew up o’er time As most such orphans can. And I watched him grow into a bull Whilst I grew into a man. And as my stride grew longer It seemed his horns grew longer still. And our bond grew ever stronger As we hiked each draw and hill Never separate from one another Until that day he caught her scent; And my Texas Longhorn brother Simply left my side and went. Well, I could hardly blame him For the heifer’s horns were fine With topline straight, and clean of limb And brindled coat that shined. Then I’d see the boy occasionally Grazing with the love he’d found Til one day he and his lady Simply t’weren’t no more around. Now the years have passed on by me But each day I hope to see A brown and yeller, brindled baby Hiding in the scrub and scree. --J.T. “Elliott” McCloud D R O V E R

A note from your Youth President

ALISSA BUTLER

Although our Championship Show and Convention is still a couple of months away, it will be here before we know it! Preparations are already underway, and we’re excited to begin gearing up for one of the biggest events of the year. One of the first opportunities to get involved is by supporting our 2026 ITLA Championship Show and Convention T-shirt. This year’s design is one you won’t want to miss, and we’re offering businesses and brands the chance to be featured on the back of the shirt. Sponsoring a brand spot is a great way to promote your operation while supporting our association and one of our premier events. Brand sponsorships are $50 and include one T-shirt, while additional shirts are available for $25 each. As always, all youth exhibiting at the ICSC will receive a complimentary T-shirt. If you’re interested in purchasing a brand sponsorship or pre ordering a shirt, be sure to submit your information before the deadline. Brand spots are limited, so don’t wait too long to reserve yours! As we continue counting down to Championship Show, I encourage everyone to start making plans to attend. There is a lot of work happening behind the scenes to make this year’s event a success, and we can’t wait to see everyone together again. It’s never too early to start getting excited before we know it, we’ll be loading trailers, seeing old friends, making new memories, and celebrating another outstanding Championship Show. See you all in a couple of months! Sincerely, ITLA Youth President Alissa Butler D R O V E R

SPECIALIZING IN PERSONALIZED, CUSTOM ADS!

Because Becauseyou youdeserve deservean anaffordable affordablead adasasunique uniqueasasyour yourbrand! brand!

Time is not on your side By: Craig Perez THE MOMENT OF TRUTH The ranch is silent, but the desk lamp is burning. It is 2:00AM, and the rest of the world is asleep, but on your desk lies a decision that will quietly dictate the financial trajectory of your operation for the next three years. On one hand, you hold a copy of a registration for an Elite Proven Herd Sire. In the other a picture of the bull you raised out in the pasture. This is more than just a routine ranch chore. It is a high-stakes capital allocation. The choice dictates your calf crop, your brand’s market value, and your annual revenue years down the road. Yet, across the industry, decisions of this magnitude are made every day in a state of volatile speculation...guessing.

FROM GUT FEELING TO GENETIC CERTAINTY This blind guessing, trading on hype and emotion, has mathmatically devastating ramifications. A single bad cross means you lose the genetic premium in the current calf crop, you set the value of the next generation of brood cows back by years, and you waste precious time and resources developing inventory that the market simply won’t reward. The market doesn’t care about gut feelings, and the clock starts the moment the bull enters the pasture. Hope is a luxury reserved for the reckless; strategic data architecture is the mandate of a successful program. The decision between the Proven Herd Sire and the bull raised in your own pasture is a calculation of asset appreciation. A proven, purchased bull, validated by historical data, provides an immediate, external assurance that his calf crop will carry a quantifiable genetic premium. His established value acts as a protective floor and an upward multiplier on the cows he services, securing their net worth. Conversely, selecting the untested, raised bull is a high-stakes bet. While a successful outcome retains all the value – the genetic blueprint and the resulting profit – within your brand, a poor outcome immediately devalues the entire cohort of brood cows he has bred, compounding risk across the next three generations. The data architecture ensures you are multiplying assets, not merely managing a liability.

To build your brand with your own genetics from pasture to production, the best of the best should be the foundation that these in-house prospects are developed from. Growing a bull takes dedication. Putting this in perspective, you should be treating a weaned prospect as if you just paid $10,000 for him. If he makes the cut at a year old, you should treat him as if you just paid $100,000 for him. Before you think about turning him out with the main herd, ask yourself, is he worth $1,000,000? Let’s be honest, most of us will never raise a million dollar bull. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be treating them like one. Those yearling prospects need to get to work as soon as possible Their first crop will be the only real indicator you have to base your judgements on, To compound the challenge, he’s likely breeding heifers and in general the industry views calves out of heifers to be less than perfect indicators of real production. The fact is, you are judging that prospect on his own growth more than his production. That first calf crop will add or subtract from his value as they reach one and two years old. This is the blueprint of many of the best bulls that the industry has raised. HOBBY OR HABIT

To survive and thrive, a program must pivot from pure chance to calculated architecture. The hobbyist looks at pedigree and sees a list of famous ancestors -a marketing sheet. The Breeder, however, looks at the exact same paper and sees a structural map of how greatness is constructed or demolished. This is the line where simply multiplying cattle ends and engineering value begins. Then you cross-reference historical measurements, real-time horn growth, and multi-generational repeatability, and consignment sale prices: you stop making decisions on hype. You begin to hedge your risk, ensuring that the traits you introduce are dominant multipliers rather than volatile liabilities. THE MULTI-GENERATIONAL ANCHOR To create a level of precision that becomes standard, requires a herd map forged over time. The Gallery of Horns offers clarity showing the reality of the industry today. Because this archive was built manually, one entry at a time, it acts as an impartial analytical suite. It is more than a simple ranking of animals. It’s a database of bloodlines that are driving the industry. A photo library of the looks and shapes that captured your attention and brought you into the Longhorn world in the first place. You can find the hidden gems and uncover the next up and coming super Longhorn. Moreover, it shows what works and what doesn’t work one generation at a time with thousands of examples.

THE MASTERCLASS It’s almost breeding season, and what starts as a casual conversation between father and son over a couple of cows instantly shifts the entire direction of a multi-million-dollar enterprise. Within minutes, the casual tone evaporate. The notepads come out, the computer screens flare to life, and the raw data is printed to support each theory. The debate that follows is a classic corporate deadlock between agressive growth and stable risk management: The Son’s Position (Agressive Growth): He argues for appealing directly to the volatile, highdollar market. His strategy is to cross elite genetics for maximum horn growth velocity and leverage the psychological appeal of proven, high-profile working crosses. He wants to capture the premium selectors immediately. The Father’s Position (Capital Preservation): He targets a completely different sector of the spreadsheet. He advocates for strategic crosses focusing on color, body, and skeletal size to fundamentally secure the bottom line of the herd. His goal is to insulate the program against downmarkets by ensuring a constant, predictable revenue stream that systematically pays the ranch’s overhead, letting the raw genetics naturally evolve into high-dollar inventory over time. Hours pass as the sun goes down. They find themselves in an absolute deadlock over a handful of cornerstone cows. Neither side will budge. They finally table the debate, leaving the tension hanging in the air. The next day, that frustration yields a real-world masterclass in institutional equity management. It is a philosophy that seperates the romantic hobbyist from the enduring market titan, broken down into an immutable 80/20 law: Spend 80% of your time improving the bottom 20% of your herd. Use the bottom 20% of your herd to fund 80% of your program. This is how a hedge fund manager protects a portfolio from a market crash. The high-dollar, record-breaking assests are the volatile tech stocks – they bring the headlines and the massive windfalls, but they cannot be relied upon to keep the lights on during a market correction. True structural wealth is built from the bottom up. By using data architecture to aggressively elevate the floor of your bottom 20%, you create a bulletproof baseline of marketable living assets that consistently self-fund the high-stakes genetic exploration at the top. Before lunch is served, they have negotiated the rest of the cows on their breeding strategy list. You may think you know how this ended, but here is how it actually ended. The Father helped the son understand the process and the dynamics that have made their ranch successful and profitable for over 50 years. The brand on the side of the cattle didn’t just stand for ownership, it stood for standard. D R O V E R

This is the principle of structural wealth, built from the bottom up. The high-dollar, recordbreaking assests bring the headlines and the massive windfalls, but they cannot be relied upon to keep the lights on during a market correction. By using data architecture to aggressively elevate the floor of your bottom 20%, you create a bulletproof baseline of living assets that consistently selffund the high-stakes genetic exploration at the top. CHOOSE WISELY The most successful programs in the industry aren’t luckier than the rest; they are simply making better decisions. Every time you open the pasture gate without consulting the baseline of truth of history, you are letting a speculative guess decide your financial future. The data is verified, the options are available, and the architecture of the next generation is entirely in your hands.

Alissa Butler 2026 ITLA Queen

As summer comes to a close, our show season is still in full swing! One of my favorite parts of serving as your ITLA Queen has been the oppurtunity to travel across the country, meet fellow Longhorn enthusiasts, and represent our association at events near and far. By the time you are readinf this, I will have traveled to Missouri and will be preparing for my next trip to Maryland in September. Every show reminds me just how special the Texas Longhorn community is. No matter where you go, you’re welcomed with friendly faces, incredible cattle, and people who share the same passion for this breed. Theses trips have allowed me to meet exhibitors of all ages, learn more about the industry, and build friendships that stretch far beyond state lines. It has truly been an honor to represent the ITLA and share the excitement surrounding our association wherever I go. While we’re enjoying another busy show season, it’s also exciting to look ahead. Championship Show will be here before we know, and I can’t wait to see everyone together again for one of the biggest events of the year. Until then, I hope everyone has safe travels, successful shows, and enjoys making memories with family and friends along the way. Thank you all for your continued support. I look forward to seeing many of you on the road, and soon enough, at ChampionshipShow! Sincerely ITLA Youth President Alissa Butler

Allison Miner 2026 ITLA Princesss

Since the last issue of The Drover was a print issue it has been awhile since I have wrote the last letter. We had our first NETLA show od the season at the end of June in Frederick, MD and we attended the ORVTLA in July in Wooster, OH. Then we had a show this past week at the York State Fair in York, PA. The York State Fair is one of my favorite shows because it is in an air-conditioned building which was nice because I wasn’t dying of heat while trying to show my cattle. My big steer Jake got All Age Champion Steer and I also showed a heifer and another steer. I also got to ride Jake in the opening ceremony and present the flag. We brought my Dad’s riding steer out of retirement for this show so we got to ride our steers around a little in the arena and on the fairgrounds. We took an amazing picture by the ferris wheel. I also got to ride Jake in and present the flag for opening ceremonies. I had lots of opportunities to answer questions about Longhorns and show people that they can be sweet and gently giants. Macen Rogers 2026 ITLA Little Miss

Wow, summer was a busy time for me. I went to Broken Bow with my family for the 4th of July. It was a lot of fun. The cabin was huge and had lots of activities. My family and I also went to San Antonio to visit some of our other family. While we were there, we went to SeaWorld, it was a lot of fun. I rode a lot of roller coasters. My favorite one was the Texas Stingray and the Great White. They were really scary and big, but still so fun. Soon I will be going to my Grandma’s house like we do every year. It’s always a lot fun because she has a pool and we love to hang out with her. I hope everyone is having a great summer. Macen Rogers ITLA Little Miss
