the publisher Dear Planner, We at Itineraries have always wanted to do a hub-and-spoke-themed issue and we are thrilled that it is finally here! Hub & spoke tours are popular with groups because they allow travelers to kick back and enjoy their surroundings. No need to pack and unpack several times throughout your group tour since your “hub” city becomes home for a few days, while the “spokes” are daily excursions to nearby destinations. You’ll notice that our layout is a bit different this issue. Each state’s section features one hub & spoke tour, highlighting various “spoke” destinations and the driving time from their respective “hub.” For instance, your South Dakota tour has your group staying in Keystone and taking daytrips to Custer, Deadwood, Badlands National Park, and Rapid City. It’s a great way to become familiar with a particular region. And your group can save money by staying at accommodations just outside of the big-ticket urban areas. Be sure to check out the architecture we’ve highlighted and, of course, our real-time itineraries and hot stops. Read on to discover all the hubbub around hub & spoke tours! Best Regards, Heather J. Lahren, CEO - Publisher

CHICAGO A

h, Chicago, that toddlin’ town. With so much to see and do, who wouldn’t want to board a motorcoach and leave the details to, well, YOU?! I lived in Chicago for three years, and every time I return I am always amazed at the growth that has taken place. It’s a bustling town all right. And it seems to get more bustling every day. So here’s a little inside tip to make it a whole lot easier for you, the planner, to get your groups there. Just remember these three words: Chicago Architecture Foundation. The Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) is a nonprofit organization located in the Chicago Loop’s historic Santa Fe Building. While its mission may be to inspire people around architecture and design, in reality CAF is famous for its tours and exhibitions. With more than 85 tours to

ARCHITECTURE THROUGH choose from—including river cruises, bus, walking, biking, Segway, and L-train tours— there is certainly a tour to appeal perfectly to your group. Whether you tour downtown or a neighborhood, expert guides bring to life the stories behind the buildings. Visit iconic skyscrapers, elegant hotels, or the legendary houses of Frank Lloyd Wright. In addition to the architecture tours, CAF offers exhibitions about architecture, infrastructure, cities, and design. Lectures, panel discussions, education programs, and

architecture tours are also on the menu. CAF is also recognized as a destination in and of itself, with two exhibitions on display at all times, as well as the LEGO® Studio, lecture hall, a scale model of downtown Chicago, and the potential design for the Obama Library. No wonder CAF was named the #1 thing to do in Chicago by the U.S. News & World Report in 2012. Chicago has long been a laboratory for architectural innovation & experimentation. In fact, Chicago is known around the world for its architecture. CAF figured out a long time ago that the best way to really experience the

Windy City is through the stories behind some of her most significant skyscrapers, museums, theaters, bridges, homes, schools, houses of worship, and parks. It all began back in 1966 when a group of Chicagoans formed to save the Glessner House (H.H. Richardson’s) from being demolished. Out of their success came the founding of the Chicago Architecture Foundation. By 1970 they added walking tours led by award-winning volunteer docents trained in an education program that pays off big time for you and your groups. Six years later CAF began presenting exhibitions and educational programs, and in 1983 launched the first architecture river cruise. This evolved ten

CHICAGO THROUGH ARCHITECTURE

years later into a collaboration with Chicago’s First Lady Cruises, presenting the CAF River Cruise from Chicago’s finest fleet—consistently voted the #1 tour in Chicago. The river cruise highlights more than 50 architecturally significant buildings and does so with style, class, and comfort. Led by passionate volunteer docents from the Chicago Architecture Foundation, Chicago’s First Lady Cruises are a must-see for visitors and hometown folks alike. Those who know recommend getting an overview of the city from the boat tour. It’s the most popular tour, and for good reason. Another good way to get an overview of the city is to bring your group to see the Chicago Model, a 1,000-building scale model of downtown Chicago. Housed in the Atrium of the Railway Exchange Building, it serves as the launching point for many of the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s tours. It is the largest, most complete replica of the downtown Loop area in the world. Upwards of 100,000 people visit the model each year. It plays a critical role in CAF’s youth education and adult programming, and also serves as a centerpiece for many of the rotating exhibitions.

The model was inspired by a similar model of the city of Shanghai and provides a 3D view of Chicago’s Loop. The Chicago Model is updated annually, removing demolished buildings and adding new city structures where needed. Since its construction by CAF in 2009, the model has attracted many famous visitors including Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Mayor Richard Daley, and architect Jeanne Gang. It’s an icon, loved by tourists and locals alike. And the price is right—it’s free! The Chicago Architecture Foundation hosts the largest annual architecture event in the country, Open House Chicago (OHC). This free, annual event gives the public access to buildings and spaces around the city that are typically closed to the public. Held over a weekend in October, OHC attracts tens of thousands of participants from across the country and around the world. Begun in 2011, this

citywide weekend festival attracted upwards of 75,000 attendees last year. Imagine that one spectacular mansion you’ve been curious about, or that unusual building you walk by every day and wondered what its story might be. Well here’s your chance to find out more. As architect Kevin Hall exclaimed to me when recalling accessing an old bank vault during Open House Chicago, “It’s really cool!” I must say a word about the docent guides affiliated with CAF. You will notice these people are extremely knowledgeable and go a long way towards making your group’s experience exceptional. CAF docents happily share their knowledge and passion for Chicago, its world-class architecture, and urban environment only after completing months of rigorous

training and challenging requirements. CAF docents are educators, ambassadors and entertainers. They are an elite group of content experts handpicked and carefully trained to serve as the face of an internationally renowned organization. Although CAF docents come from all walks of life, they share a few common traits. Each is a curious and creative lifelong learner, passionate about architecture and Chicago. You’ll find each docent is just as committed to the success of your tour as you are. Chicago is a beautiful city, and bringing your group here is well worth it. But Windy City traffic can have unexpected last-minute challenges. Working with the incredibly professional staff at CAF takes the pressure off you and ensures your group will have a great time. Oh, and don’t forget the CAF Shop, located at 224 South Michigan Avenue, offering unique Chicago gifts as well as architecture and design themed merchandise. I can’t think of a better way to see the city and hear about its history.

Group travel is about having a good time. But too often, it feels like there’s not enough time to do everything. One way to free up some of that time is to organize a hub-and-spoke tour. Your hotel becomes home base for daily excursions to points near and far. Instead of packing up the suitcase and relocating every couple days, your group gets to kick back and enjoy their surroundings. And the tour operator can choose among the many nearby towns for the best day trips. Better yet, think of the money your group can save by lodging outside big-ticket cities, while remaining close enough to enjoy the attractions.

every which way you win Ottawa, Kansas provides a great introduction to hub-andspoke touring. It’s a mid-sized town with lots to do a short distance away. You can head out from Ottawa to Olathe. Olathe will immerse your group in 1860s farming, frontier living, and stagecoach travel. Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic Site is a pro when it comes to groups. Mahaffie, which opened in 1865, is one of the few remaining stagecoach stops on the Santa Fe Trail. It celebrates its heritage by inviting groups to go back in time with them. You’ll want to book well ahead to make plans for lunch on the grounds and to choose between themed offerings or arrange one of your own. A popular theme is “Home on the Range.” Your group can check out cowboy gear, rope a (fake) steer, and rattle along in a stagecoach. (Good thing group travel has improved since then.) You’re not far from Oz in Ottawa. In fact, it’s just down the road in Wamego, where the Oz Museum bursts with memorabilia from the books and film. Even better, the museum has a group discount and knowledgeable staffers who can clue you in to the best of over 100 years of Oz history. Lawrence and Madison are close too, but don’t forget your hotel city. Ottawa has put together tour itineraries that include agri-tourism, architecture, history, and local flavors.

Beloit, Wisconsin as well as St. Cloud, Willmar and Eagan, Minnesota also cater to the hub-and-spoke tour operator looking for diverse attractions within a limited radius and well-priced lodging.

hub-and-spoke lands The Dakotas are made for hub-and-spoke travel. They have buzzing city centers, major historic sites, and breathtaking parklands—all just a bus ride from your hotel. One possible hotel hub is Dickinson, which provides a gateway to Medora, one of North Dakota’s top destinations. Dickinson has over 1,700 lodging rooms in addition to the Fluffy Fields Vineyard (opening Spring 2016), the Theodore Roosevelt Center, and even an institute devoted to Ukrainian Easter egg art. Our 26th president used to ranch just outside town. You and your group can roam with the buffalo in the park named for him, Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Call ahead to arrange special ranger program tours and to find out if there are seasonal alerts that might affect parking and trail usage. South Dakota’s Keystone makes it easy to hub-andspoke travel. It sits three miles from Mount Rushmore and only miles more from several principal attractions. You can pick and choose between indoor activities and outdoor adventures, which comes in handy if the weather turns. Rapid City gives groups

an insider view of the Black Hills Gold Factory. The city has put together several itineraries depending on your group’s interest in the arts, culture, holiday fun, monuments, and wildlife. After a restful night at the hotel, you can follow another spoke to the Badlands, which encompasses some of the most breathtaking vistas on earth. The Badlands CVB had the tour operator in mind when they came up with a list of scenic drives. In addition, they have simplified your journey down Interstates 90 and 29 with their pick of “must-see” stops. Another spoke from Keystone will take you to Custer and still another spoke will take you to Deadwood. Everyone in your group has heard about Deadwood. Now the famous Old West town is only an hour from their hotel. The town of Deadwood is a tourist magnet. Working with the tour specialists will help you get around the crowds and still take in everything you want to see.

creative options with stained glass tours, a performing arts center, and First Friday Art Walks. Your art excursions in Fairfield will restore the group for a big outing to the city. And don’t forget Lincoln, Nebraska. They offer something for the history buff and the outdoor enthusiast. With a wide range of hotel deals and four attractive cities within two hours or less, Lincoln is an ideal hub city. An hour away, Nebraska City is the home of Arbor Day. The Arbor Lodge State Historical Park runs group events throughout the year. You can plan your trip around bees and blossoms, the apple harvest, or the clever Gnome Hunt and Tree Sleuth tours. Because the park is used to working with groups, it has the flexibility to accommodate your schedule. You can find day trips to sandhill crane viewing in Kearney or horse racing, boutiques and railroad history in Grand Island. And those are just some of the destination options.

hub towns

Hub-and-spoke tours allow you to be creative with your itinerary. When you don’t have to hurry from hotel to hotel, you can slow down and spend more time doing what your group loves best, and that’s relaxing in some of the best destinations in America. Contact some of your favorite towns to see how they can fit your dream of a great hub-and-spoke tour.

There is no end to great hub towns. But among the best for tour operators are Peoria in Illinois and St. Louis in Missouri. On a different kind of tour, you might skip Fairfield, Iowa in favor of its larger neighbors Iowa City and Des Moines. But Fairfield is a hotel haven and an arts colony. It gives you a number of

The Glessner House MUSEUM By Kathleen Somers hen John J. and Frances Glessner commissioned Henry Hobson Richardson to design their new home on Chicago’s fashionable Prairie Avenue, they wanted something that would reflect their ideas about home, family and society. Henry H. Richardson was at the top of his career when he accepted the commission in 1886, offering the Glessners a chance to do something beyond the ordinary. Richardson had achieved such a high level of acclaim and notoriety in his profession that he was able to design structures more according to his own genius. The house is a radical departure from the standard Victorian designs of that time. Even today it remains an architectural treasure of

the Chicago area. The significance of the house lies in part with the innovative design and floor plan, ranking the Glessner House as one of the most important residential commissions of the 19th century. Henry Richardson developed an architectural style that combined elements of 11th and 12th century European styles and adapted them to American idioms. It was called the Richardsonian Romanesque style. The Glessner House even inspired a young Frank Lloyd Wright and helped redefine American architecture. While the interior of this impressive 1887 two-story mansion is truly beautiful by anyone’s standards, the exterior looks more like a prison than a family home. Built of rough granite, the lines are simple and lack décor. Rather than situating the mansion in the middle of its three lots of land, the building butts right up to the property line, in front of the sidewalk in both the front on Prairie Avenue and side on

18th Street. Windows are small and narrow in a practical manner that allows the family more privacy and security. The house is actually built around a beautiful courtyard that bathes the many large south-facing windows of the home’s main areas in sunlight and beauty. The Glessner family loved their new home, but the neighbors were less than thrilled. Sleeping-car CEO George Pullman lived right across the street from the Glessner home and was once quoted as saying, “I do not know what I have ever done to have that thing staring me in the face every time I go out of my door.” Mr. and Mrs. Glessner were good people who had a lasting impact on Chicago. Both patrons of the arts, they contributed greatly to

the Chicago area and were loved and respected tremendously. John made his money in the farm implement business. His company, with four others, later evolved into International Harvester (1902), which became the 4th largest corporation in the country. Glessner was appointed vice president and served in that capacity until his death in 1936 at the age of 92. He and his wife were married for more than 60 years (Frances died in 1932), and had two surviving children. The children ended up in New Hampshire where the family had spent their summers due to young George’s health. Much like their parents had, the children influenced those around them in New Hampshire. Just three weeks after completing the blueprints for the Glessner Mansion, H. H. Richardson died. He was only 48. Richardson never got to see the house completed in 1887. John and Frances Glessner so respected the

brilliant architect, that upon moving in they hung a picture of Richardson in a place of honor in their new home. The picture remains there today, and some say the architect remains there as well. When the Glessner family lived there, various members felt a cold presence passing through the mansion. A white apparition has been noticed on the stairs and in the master bedroom. Over the years, with different groups and people inhabiting the house, it has been reported that an entity, clearly the likes of Henry Hobson Richardson, the man in the portrait, is going about his business in various parts of the mansion. Amidst a frenzy of urban renewal in the 1960s, the Glessner House narrowly escaped

Glessner House - Parlor

the wrecking ball. Today you can tour the fully restored Glessner House Museum along with another historic landmark, the Clarke House (1836), Chicago’s oldest surviving building. Tours are led by trained docents and staggered so you can see both houses back to back. The grateful Glessner heirs have generously donated much of the original furnishing to the museum. There is something for both the casual visitor as well as the serious connoisseur, with its guided tours, lectures and special programs interpreting themes of art, architecture and social history, all inherent in the Glessner House. Each home’s tour lasts about an hour. Custom tours for groups of 10 or more are available with at least 4 weeks’ notice. Please contact 312.326.1480 for more information or to make a custom tour reservation. Perhaps H. H. Richardson will pay your group a visit? 1-877-832-7267

Prairie Land Pipestone National Monument – Pipestone

For countless generations, American Indians have quarried the red pipestone found at this site. These grounds are sacred to many people because the pipestone quarried here is carved into pipes used for prayer. Many believe that the pipe’s smoke carries one’s prayer to the Great Spirit. The traditions of quarrying and pipe-making continue here today. End-O-Line Railroad Park & Museum – Currie

The End-O-Line Railroad Park & Museum collects, preserves, exhibits, and interprets artifacts and stories of the Southwest Minnesota frontier experience. Their collection of buildings and artifacts are a stunning reminder of the past and the role that railroads played in establishing our nation. Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum – Walnut Grove

Enjoy learning the history of the Ingalls family in Walnut Grove at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum. The museum’s collections are housed in a series of interesting buildings, including an 1898 depot, a chapel, an onion-domed house, dugout display, little red schoolhouse, early settler home, and covered wagon display.

Historic Dayton House – Worthington

Experience the Victorian-period elegance and hospitality of this fully restored 1890s home. The Historic Dayton House can serve as a gathering place for a wide variety of special events. It is also a unique place to rest and relax with all the lodging amenities you would expect in a five-star bed and breakfast. Fort Belmont – Jackson

Stop by Fort Belmont in Jackson, Minnesota and explore a unique re-creation of Fort Belmont built by settlers living in Belmont township of Jackson County in the early 1860s. See a blacksmith shop, hand-built prairie sod house, trading post, museum and more.

Minnesota River Valley Salt Lake – Marietta

Outside of tiny Marietta on the western plains of Minnesota is Salt Lake, the only alkaline lake in the state. This briny body of water attracts all sorts of birds not native to the area and is a bird-watching Mecca. Alkaline soils run off into the lake, which has no inlet or outlet, leaving it a legitimate salt lake. Jeffers Petroglyphs Historic Site – Comfrey

For literally thousands of years, the Jeffers Petroglyphs Historic Site has been an important

place for the people who lived here. Before the pyramids were built, before the first stone was erected at Stonehenge, there were carvings in the rock. Long after those first petroglyphs, this was a holy site to the native people who lived in and around this area. Oldest Rock on Earth – Granite Falls

Visible here are some rock outcrops near the Yellow Medicine County Museum just as you come into town from the east. The exposed rock is 3.8 billion years old, which is impressive considering the earth itself is 4.5 billion years old. This rock was exposed from the mantle when Glacial Lake Agassiz emptied into the ocean during the last Ice Age. The draining of this impossibly huge lake apparently caused the ocean to rise 1-3 feet. Walk right up to it and touch a piece of true geological history. Schell’s Brewery – New Ulm

Come to the place where the story of German craft beer began. Schell’s has been passed down through six generations. Brew masters remain dedicated to German traditions, most training in the Fatherland. As of 2013, Schell’s has crafted over 100 different varieties of German-inspired brews. They will keep making German craft beer until people stop enjoying beer…which clearly won’t be happening! Continued on Page 36

GEOLOGY, MINING & THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE

BIRDING

See the oldest exposed rock in the world! That’s what you’ll find near Granite Falls, but there are several other places along the Byway that will excite the geologist in you. Look closer and you will even find cacti among the outcrops. The draining of Glacial Lake Agassiz from west central Minnesota after the last ice age shaped this river valley. There is still evidence of those forces for the sharp eye. The old town of Ottawa is ripe with limestone buildings from a local quarry, including a church, town hall, and barn. Near the Minnesota/South Dakota border is the Continental Divide, which separates water flowing south to the Gulf of Mexico and water flowing north to Hudson Bay. A sign at Browns Valley explains this phenomenon.

The Minnesota River Valley Birding Trail is almost entirely within the Scenic Byway and there have been sightings of nearly 350 species within the river’s watershed. With many refuges, wildlife management areas, scientific and natural areas, parks and other specified lands, the habitat is healthy and widespread. Check www.birdingtrail.org for great details!

FESTIVALS

With 287 miles’ worth of towns, there’s bound to be a festival for your taste or season. Here is just a sample of some events: Sauerkraut Days (Henderson), Rock Bend Folk Festival (St. Peter), RibFest (Mankato), Bavarian Blast (New Ulm), FarmFest (Redwood Falls), Fiesta Days (Montevideo), AppleFest (Appleton).

As you can see, a wide range of interests and activities await you along the MN River Valley National Scenic Byway! For information call 888-463-9856 or visit www.MNRiverValley.com.

GOLF & FRISBEE GOLF

There are more than 25 golf courses along the Byway with a wide variety of playing surfaces and layouts, many with beautiful bluff and valley views! Frisbee golf courses exist in many river valley communities. HUNTING & FISHING

Hunting in the valley begins in the fall with over 150,000 geese at the Lac qui Parle Wildlife Management Area. Deer, duck, pheasant, and turkey are numerous, and trapping muskrat, mink, fox, raccoon, and beaver is also viable. Bow and black powder hunting have grown recently with outfitters able to supply your needs along the Minnesota River Valley National Scenic Byway. Ortonville’s Big Stone Lake is famous for

Next, enjoy a self-guided walking tour of historic downtown. More than 60 buildings of different architectural styles are within walking distance of the Main Street Historic District. Stop for great shopping along the way.
