What is fibre cement?

Fibre Reinforced Cement (FRC), or simply, fibre cement, is a popular building material developed by James Hardie in the early 1980s, when pioneering the use of alternative reinforcing materials to create building products. What is Hardie™ fibre cement made of?

Hardie™ fibre cement is made from a mixture of cement, sand, water and cellulose fibre, sourced from sustainably grown pine trees. Small amounts of other chemical additives are used to help the process or provide products with certain characteristics. This unique mixture of materials helps to build beautiful, low-maintenance and durable home exteriors across Australia.

Oblique Cladding

The clean horizontal lines of Linea™ weatherboards work beautifully on the expansive external walls of modern architecture. Ideal for creating a Hamptons or coastal inspired look when combined with contrasting Axent Trims in new homes or renovations, Linea can also be confidently painted in dark colours. Hardie Primeline Weatherboard

Weatherboards have been used in Australian homes since the 1850s and are a key factor of Victorian and Queenslander home styles. Today they’re popular in modern coastal and Australian Hamptons style homes. Weatherboards help protect a building/structure from the harsh and unpredictable Australian weather, and natural elements such as sea spray. Available in styles to match many heritage weatherboard homes, PrimeLine™ Weatherboards are a durable range of 9mm thick weatherboards for creating classic lines without the wonkiness of timber.

EasyLap™ panel is a pre-primed fibre cement sheet with a shiplap joint along its two vertical edges. Panels are finished with a site-applied, roll-on textured acrylic paint to achieve a subtle rendered texture look. Lightweight yet durable, EasyLap panel is an easy to install, cost-effective broadwall cladding solution.

EasyLap panel is designed for use in residential single and medium-density buildings, including alterations and additions, where a uniform broadwall cladding is required. Panels are suitable for use on either timber or light gauge steel framed homes.

Hardie Flex Sheet

The applications for Hardie™ Flex Sheet cover a wide range of design solutions for your home. Hardie Flex Sheets are suitable for use in residential extensions, second story additions and gable ends. It can also be used to line porches, verandahs, carports and for soffits and eaves. One of the most economical solutions available Hardie Flex is commonly used for board and batten style cladding. Don’t overlook the durability and sophistication for new construction as well. It is a natural, un-sanded sheet that is immediately suitable for a paint finish and the installation could not be easier.

Hardie Villaboard

Villaboard™ is a heavy-duty wall lining compared to plasterboard. Ideal for use in bathrooms and wet areas, if the waterproofing fails you can rest assure that Villaboard won’t. Resistant to damage from moisture, it won’t deform or lose its structural integrity which means fewer call backs and less costly rectifications.

Hardie Villaboard Accessories

Villaboard™ also has incredible hanging power for tiles, hooks and fixings. With a tensile bond strength up to 75 per cent greater than wet area plasterboard, it can hold tiles with a maximum weight between 30 and 60 kg/m2 depending on the thickness of the tiles and Villaboard™ sheet used, ensuring expensive bathroom tiles are always secure - Please refer to the product installation guide for further information of maximum tile thicknesses and weights. Use it on walls and ceilings in bathrooms, laundries, kitchens and high-traffic areas, and even in multi-residential and commercial buildings.

Hardie Versilux Lining

As a versatile interior wall sheet, Versilux™ Lining can be used in laundries, kitchens and high-traffic areas. It is also popular when used as a soffit and can be installed in exposed beam ceilings. Unlike Villaboard, Versilux is square on the long edges for making butt joins and accessory joins doing away with set joints that require extra finishing time and cost.

As a versatile wall sheet it’s easy to achieve a range of looks using straight PVC jointers, the black PVC express jointer accessory or Axent Trim as battens over the joints.6mm sheets can also be used as bracing when installed in accordance with James Hardie’s Structural Bracing Application guide.

HARDIE PANEL COMPRESSED SHEET

Hardie™ Panel is a compressed fibre cement (CFC) sheet for ceramic tile finishes over timber or lightweight steel joists. Used as substrate for tiled balconies and tiled internal wet-area floors, HardiePanel is a durable alternative to particle board and plywood and is resistant to damage from moisture. Strong and resilient, Hardie Panel can also be used as formwork in a range of industrial and commercial applications such as bridges and roadworks.

Deemed non-combustible in accordance with the provisions of the Building Code of Australia, it can also be used for floors in bushfire prone areas.

HARDIE TILE UNDERLAY

A smooth and stable internal underlay for ceramic tile finishes, Hardie™ Ceramic Tile Underlay helps protect tiles against cracking caused by the movement that occurs naturally in timber, particle board and plywood substrates.

HARDIE EDGE BASE TRIM

James Hardie Edge Base Trim is fabricated from high quality powder-coated aluminium. It is perfect for residential and selected commercial applications.

Expertly designed for low rise, high rise and commercial building facades, fascia’s and soffits the ExoTec® Facade Panel and System is a deemed-to-satisfy, non-combustible cladding system. Aesthetically, ExoTec is a smooth sanded compressed fibre cement (CFC) façade panel that works with a top-hat system to create geometric designs with 10mm express joints. The 9mm thick panels are fully sealed on all sides, to reduce limit panel expansion, as well as being high impact resistant and durable.

ExoTec can be fixed with concealed fasteners or purposefully exposed ones. For a custom look, it can be painted on-site with a wide range of acrylic textures or factory finished off-site in polyurethane or metallic colours.
