Summer in Ithaca explodes with a bacchanalia of flowers, color, and music made outdoors. The combination of local parks, festivals, wineries, cideries, nightclubs, the Bernie Milton band stand on the Commons, and even college campuses create a cornucopia of musical styles and ensembles, from guitar-based solo and duo folk groups, to full-blown concert and jazz bands; from cover and tribute bands to bands that only play their own stuff. The area is so filled with musicians that you can’t go wrong in finding quality music to match your mood or challenge your intellect on almost any night of the week.
It’s impossible to track all the variety this summer has to offer, but here’s a general idea of what to expect, when and where. Check the Ithaca Times calendar or the various venue and band websites for more detailed information.
The big fish in Ithaca’s summer music pond are, of course, the just finished 48-yearold Ithaca Festival and the upcoming 33-year young Grassroots Festival.

The Ithaca Festival spotlights primarily local amateur and community groups. It is a celebration of home-grown sounds, along with local food, crafts, workshops, and a decidedly free flowing Ithaca vibe, beginning with the Ithaca Festival Parade. Wisps of funkinesspast are still in the air with as the Volvo Ballet survives albeit without ballerinas, though the He-Man Chainsaw Marching Band didn’t make the cut.
The Grassroots Festival draws national acts as well as established local bands and even a festival orchestra and this year, jazz. Its features a great variety musical genres and styles; Americana blues, rock and funk, European trad folk, West African Afrobeat, and Native American drumming. Ithaca’s openness and quirkiness is on full display for the entire weekend. The food is plentiful, though the lines can be long. There’s camping, remote-site parking, crafts, feel-good therapy sessions and fine art displays Don’t miss the Happiness Parade. It’s Ithaca with its hair down…way down. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, embrace the adversity. It’s part of the Grassroots experience.

The CFCU’s Downtown Concert Series is a mainstay of the Ithaca summer music scene. Thursday night finds the Bernie Milton stage packed with powerhouse groups meant to draw a dancing crowd. The concrete can be a bit hard to stand or sit on, so bring a chair to listen to the contemporary soulful sounds of Ariel Arbisser/Destiny La Vibe, SingTrece and Stone Cold Miracle, the progressive jazz of Neo Project, Grateful Dead-inspired Terrapin Station, and original Americana from Kitestring.
The Cornell Continuing Education Summer Concert Series is moving its 7 PM Friday night concert series to the Ag Quad this year, so adjust your plans accordingly. As of this writing, four concerts are scheduled, so make the most of high energy performances by Jorge T. Cuevas and the Caribe Jazz Allstars, Maddy Walsh, Gunpoets as well as the inti-
mate and gentle African music of Samite. You will have to endure Cornell’s byzantine parking arrangements but it’s worth it. Bring the kids, leash the dog, and don’t forget money for the ice cream.
Hosmer Winery on Route 89 in Ovid presents their “Music and Mimosas” weekly concerts on Sunday afternoons from 1-4 PM. Their season runs for most of June, July and August rain or shine, and has no cover charge. Hosmer is pet and children friendly–as are most of the other outdoor venues–so load up the SUV with chairs and refreshments. Most of their offerings are solo, duet or small group rock cover bands. They are also running a oneoff all-day special event featuring the Petty Thieves from 8-5 PM on June 14.
Knapp Winery in Romulus runs its “Knapp Sessions” on Saturdays from 2-5 PM. They offer mostly solo guitar and small acts focused on Americana and roots, some electric some acoustic sounds in an informal and cozy setting.
The Finger Lakes Cider House in Interlaken offers a little of everything on Friday nights from 6-9 PM. It will cost you a cover charge, but then you get to see groups such as Maddy Walsh and the Blind Spots, the Notorious String Busters and even Jorge T. Cuevas & the Caribe Jazz All Stars.
Six Mile Creek Vineyards, on Route 79 east of downtown, has become a regular music venue in all kinds of weather. But in summer,
the backdrop for their Thursday night “Sunset Music Series” is a vintage vineyard vista, as the bands plays on an airy and intimate deck. The shows run 6-8 but seating can be limited, though standing room is always an option. The program leans towards acoustic and lightly amplified folk rock and pop, featuring the pop quartet Darkwine, Off the Rails Blues, Erin and the Backwoods Blues Project, Radio London, and the Yardvarks, all making multiple appearances throughout the summer. Hopshire Brewery on Route 13 in Dryden offers a variety of activities on other nights, but Friday nights from 6-8 and some Saturday nights are reserved for well-known local bands such Lil’ Anne & the Hot Cayenne Zydeco, the Ageless Jazz Band, and the Smoking Loons. There’s no cover charge and only some shade, so pack an umbrella and enjoy the food truck that will supplement your drinks. Up the lake, Treleaven Wineries in King Ferry is hosting their “Hangtime Concert Series” on Saturday nights running from 6-9 PM from May to September. They are going with a full out rock program featuring long-established cover bands such as The Destination as well as the Syracuse-based, hard-hitting originals band Dirtroad Ruckus. At the other end of the spectrum, Treleaven is leaning into the tribute band craze, staging the Seven Wonders Fleetwood Mac Tribute Band and the Zac Brown Tribute band. There’s a lot happening through September, later than most other venues. Many events are ticketed so it’s best to check their website for dates and availability.
The popular Salt Point Brewery in Lansing offers mostly small, folk-oriented duos on Wednesday nights, starting at 6:30 PM. Guest artists will show up to harmonize and vocalize with the likes of Rev Ezra, Kip Opperman and Richie Stearns, Benny & the Mex, Dan Segal, True Bleu, and the Cast Iron Cowboys.
Danby’s South Hill Cidery has become one of the most vibrant outdoor music sites in the area, offering a wealth of listening opportunities and variety on Monday, Thursday, and Friday nights. Thursday is their “South Hill Cider/ Golden Hour Concert Series,” which starts at 5:30 PM. Their lineup includes longtime Ithaca favorites Wingnut, Sim Redmond Band, the Combdown, Afrobeta and Dom Martyr, and Driftwood. Jazz makers MAQ and Dave Davies’ Rhythmmakers alternate on Mondays. Except for the Ithaca Concert Band splitting a ticket with the Ageless Jazz Band, Thursday nights are solo or duo affairs, with Aaron Lipp, Mathis Haug, and Travis Knapp holding forth.
New York State is no longer offering music events at Taughannock Park, but the thanks to the New York State Council on the Arts, the Tompkins County Community Arts Partnership and the Parks and Recreation Departments of the Towns of Dryden, Lansing, and Groton, the county is bursting with concerts in the parks. All are free and offer new and veteran bands playing everything from big band jazz to electric rock to acoustic folk and blues.
Dryden’s offerings are on Tuesday nights
from 6-8 PM at the Ellis Hollow Community Center on Genung Road. You’ll find their pickings include Frank Raponi and Friends, Bob Keefe and the Surf Renegades, Joe Crookston, The Makers, and SCUBA Jerry. There’s plenty of lawn to spread out on and a food truck in case you’re not packing anything.
Lansing’s Myer’s Point Park had a grand lawn which invites picnicking on a blanket while you listen and enjoy views of the lake. The Thursday night concerts starting at 6:30 PM, and are well attended, featuring some of the area’s lesser-known acts, including the funk and blues horn band City Limits, the duo Ampersand, country rock from Tailor Made, and classic rock from Bad Alibi. The concerts are free, but plan to pay for parking.
Groton’s Recreation Department offers six concerts at their American Legion Carrington-Fuller Post No. 800 site on Main St. in Groton. On consecutive Friday nights starting on July 11, they will honor the classic blues rock group Crystal Vision, the X’Plozionz with a disco and Motown sound, the classic rock cover band the Tarps, as well as the Joe Whiting Band, among others. There’s a different food truck each night, so come hungry.
Firelight Camps is just a little way up South Hill and is the glamping site associated with La Tourelle. Open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 PM, you’ll find an eclectic mix of groups such as
Baked Nebraska, Rick Manning and Naomi Sommers, Cielle, Green Street Jazz, Richman and Poor Boys, the Diana Leigh Quartet and too many others to mention. There’s food but bring your own marshmallows…and sticks.
You may or may not have noticed a small unassuming amphitheatre near the “Bridge to Nowhere” at the south end of Route 13. The Visions Federal Credit Union Amphitheatre is just starting to host musical and non-musical events at the site. The Fall Creek Brass Band should be loud enough to call attention to this developing venue when they play on August 5, at 6 PM.
Classical music remains active in the summer. The New Park Event Venue and Suites on Taughannock Blvd. has hosted a 3-day Chamber Music Festival at its Route 89 site for several years. Featuring world-class musicians drawn from the National Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Royal Conservatory of Music, and the Calgary Philharmonic, these underpublicized concerts are hidden gems held in an enchanting, multi-acre wooded compound filled with exquisitely crafted stonework, and charmingly unique and elegant overnight cabins. The concerts are held during September 6-8. Their website is a bit hard to find, so start here: www.chambermusicatnewpark.com.
If you need a break from the sun (or rain), summer is a great time to hit the clubs. Although tourism to Tompkins County is up, most of the students have temporarily vanished (hopefully not forever), and finding downtown
parking is no longer a fantasy, at least until midAugust, so take advantage of it while you can.
Deep Dive on Taughannock Boulevard features an outdoor deck that looks out on the Inlet. Inside is a spacious, bare bones but clean performer-friendly venue that has become a local mecca for Ithaca’s exploding jazz scene. They will continue their semi-weekly Wednesday night sessions that feature 3 bands, including the Deep Dive Big Band. The People’s Jam follows the Big Band, and the jazz trio Firefly precedes it, starting 6 PM.
Deep Dive’s “Galactic Mondays” offer a mashup of rock, electronica and experimental music with Ithaca’s own out of this world native, Josh Oxford, a.k.a. Ox Joshford presiding as the musical galactic guru. You never know what it’s going to sound like, but it’s sure to be clever, provocative, and uniquely original.
The Downstairs , just off the Commons on West State Street, is an unpretentious and uncluttered basement performance space and bar that encourages all sorts of experimental and alternative art and music. Every night is booked with something different, so pick a night and be adventurous. Experimental electronica, poetry readings and raps, open mic standup comedy, and small music groups that thrive in the underground music scene find a welcoming and supportive audience.

TSyrah is known by many names with the most common alternative being “Shiraz,” which you will find on bottles from Australia and South Africa. In the United States, either name is allowed but most who grow it in the Finger Lakes call it Syrah. Whatever you call it, this dark, somewhat fruit-forward wine comes from a vine that is more sensitive to the cold than many other vinifera varieties. It is perhaps for this reason that it is not widely grown and made in the Finger Lakes.
“Syrah does not like winter,” Jason Hazlitt of the Hector Wine Company said flatly. “It produces a lot of bole wood. The bigger the wood, the bigger the cell size.” Because cells are mostly water … “It grows like crazy,” he continued, “and it’s hard to manage. But it’s
By Bill Chaisson
relatively disease resistant.” The berries of Syrah are relatively large and the clusters are loose, so it is not as prone to mildew and rot as other varieties, Pinot noir being more or less the opposite in this regard.
Shawn Kime, the winemaker at Thirsty Owl Wine Company in Ovid, said that when his winery first planted Syrah, they buried the vines each winter to protect them, covering them lightly with a plow or with straw. “One clone did better not being buried,” he said. “Two other clones died out and we replaced them with the one that did better.”
“It doesn’t grow a lot of suckers,” said Hazlitt, “which makes it hard to renew the trunk when you have die-back. We leave a lot of buds on it to prevent a lot of growth.”
Hazlitt’s family has been growing grapes
The Secret World Of Shells
It’s more than meets the slime.
at the Sawmill Creek Vineyard on Seneca Lake since 1862. In addition to making his own wine from these grapes, the Syrah grown there is sold to other wineries, including Red Newt Cellars in Hector and Billsboro Winery in Geneva. The Hazlitts planted the first acreand-a-half of Syrah in 1998, 800 feet above the lake, and another acre in 2000, 400 feet above the water. A 2013 Syrah made by Billsboro Winery won the Governor’s Cup in 2016.
Kime is the son of Bob Kime, a food scientist at Cornell’s New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva. Unlike Hazlitt’s, Kime’s roots are in crop farming. “I got into the [winemaking] field because I was born and raised here,” he said. “I didn’t move here and get into it.” He began his career at NewLand Vineyards in Geneva, which was sold in 2001 and is now Three Brothers Winery.
Thirsty Owl planted their 1.2 acres of Syrah in 2002, the year Kime arrived there. “Cornell was recommending it at conferences around that time,” recalled Kime. He thinks of Syrah as requiring more special treatment in the vineyard than other varieties, including a lot of leaf pulling to give the fruit 100% exposure to the sun. “We keep it on the vine as long as possible to reduce the tannins in it,” he said. “If possible, we like to see a little berry shrivel [before picking].” While Cabernet Sauvignon is the last variety to be picked, Syrah is next to last, at about the same time as Merlot.
Hazlitt’s Sawmill Creek Vineyard is steep and faces the setting sun, part of the Seneca Lake “banana belt,” and Thirsty Owl’s site for Syrah on Cayuga Lake is on a slope down to a cliff. “The cold air drops off the cliff,” Kime said. “You want to keep the air moving through.”
One begins to understand why Syrah is not all that widely grown in the Finger Lakes. Even though it sells out quickly, Hazlitt said he does not plan to plant more because it is so labor-intensive to grow.
Once you have managed to grow and harvest Syrah, things get a lot easier. “It’s nice to work with,” Kime said. “Even in a cooler year Syrah makes good wine. There is variation from year to year, but not as much as Cabernet Sauvignon. That’s why we like it for blending.”
Thirsty Owl, in addition to bottling it as a varietal, blends Syrah with Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. “It is never the same blend,” he said. “The proportions vary from year to year. In cooler years Syrah is the bigger component.” Thirsty Owl makes 300 cases of Syrah and even more of the blend, which is actually more popular.
Hector Wine Company makes two types of varietal Syrah, one aged in the barrel for 10 months and another for 18 months. They also make a Syrah-Cabernet Sauvignon blend. How
do his wines compare to Syrahs from warmer climates? “They are a little higher in acidity and lower in alcohol,” Hazlitt said. “And they finish with a nice white peppercorn spice.” The higher acidity makes them better for aging in the bottle, if you are so inclined.
“It is not as popular as Cabernet Franc or Pinot Noir, but it always sells out,” said Kime. Like Hector Wine Company, Thirsty Owl gives its Syrah “extensive barrel aging to get rid of ‘greenish’ tannins. But we give it more special treatment in the vineyard than in the cellar,” Kime said.
The origins of Syrah are in southeastern
France, so it is not part of the Finger Lakes drift toward central European varieties— Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, Saperavi—but it is a relatively recent introduction. Is the warming climate allowing it to be grown? According to Hazlitt, not really.
“The winters are more mild,” he said, “which is good for trunk diseases but bad for insects. The real problem is the extremes, 60° in the middle of winter for several days and then 0° the next.” That does not benefit Syrah, or any vinifera variety.
Kime worries more about an increased amount of rain. “Too much rain in September
and October would be a downfall,” he said. “It causes sour rot and you can’t let the berries hang on the vine as long as they should.”
The vineyardists of the Finger Lakes aren’t so much planting new varieties because of a changing climate as planting them to see if they do well. “James Hazlitt, my father, travelled the world and collected vines,” the younger Hazlitt said. “Then he’d plant 25 to see—after four years—if they’d work out.” Syrah worked out; some may not. “The latest variety we planted is Alvarinho”—or Albariño, a Spanish white wine variety—“but we haven’t quite got the fruit we want from that one.”

The Million Dollar Quartet about the Sun Records sessions of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins is the subject of one of the first summer offerings at the Hanger Theatre in Ithaca. (Photo: Provided)
Day trips, swimming, barbecues, winery tours. It’s summer in the Fingerlakes. And one of the great pleasures of summer here is the profusion of summer theatre.
Hangar Theatre (hangartheatre.org)
Fifty years ago this July, the Hangar Theatre launched with a production of Man of La Mancha in a repurposed airplane hangar in Ithaca’s Cass Park. While it followed a traditional summer stock schedule, the Hangar saw itself as more a regional playhouse with a national rep; notable for helping launch the early careers of such Tony winners as director
Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), lighting designers Brian MacDevitt (The Outsiders, The Book of Mormon) and Tyler Micoleau (The Band’s Visit), scenic designer Beowulf Borritt (New York, New York), playwright Itamar Moses (The Band’s Visit), as well as costume designer Michael Krass (a four-time Tony nominee.) It also provided such actors as Jimmy Smits and Billy Crudup their first professional credits.
Now in her fifth season as Artistic Director, Shirley Serotsky is again serving up a threeshow mainstage season.

Waitress (July 10–19)
This beloved musical hit Broadway in 2016, with an all-female creative team. Jenna uses her pie-making skills to bust out of a troubled marriage. Featuring music and lyrics by Grammy winner Sara Bareilles.
Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson, Apt. 2B (July 26–Aug 2)
Another madcap comedy from Ithaca native and Ithaca College alum Kate Hamill, one of the nation’s most produced playwrights. A gender-switched riff on Sherlock Holmes.
Under the outdoor tent, Hangar’s Kidstuff features The Velveteen Rabbit (July 11–13) and Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed (July 24–27). Disney’s Frozen Jr. will be presented on the mainstage (Aug 1–3).
Cortland Repertory Theatre (cortlandrep.org)
Cortland Rep has the longest history of summer theatre locally, starting in 1972. From the start, they have offered performances in a charming pavilion on Little York Lake (originally a resort.) Since 2000, Kerby Thompson has served as Artistic Director. After opening with Hello Dolly!, CRT finishes up The Odd Couple performances on June 27. Three fun musicals await:
Disney’s Little Mermaid will be performed at Cortland Repertory Theatre’s Little York Lake Pavilion July 30-Aug. 15. (Art: Provided)

The REV Theatre Company (therevtheatre.com)
REV began life as the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse; like the Hangar and CRT, it was yet another transformation of an existing historic building in a local park (Auburn’s Emerson Park). Brett Smock took the artistic reins in 2014. Coming up:
Barnum (July 9–26)
A big-top musical about the great American promoter, huckster (“there’s a sucker born every minute’”) and circus impresario P.T. Barnum. Featuring circus coordination by Ithaca’s own Amy Cohen of Circus Culture.

Music will float across Cayuga Lake this July with waterside bands jamming out for paddlers, kayakers, walkers and the community at the Cayuga Waterfront Trail. Watermusic and Dancing on the Trail will add a whimsical touch to Ithaca once again this summer, this year adding a new closing concert to its lineup.
On July 27, the Cayuga Waterfront Trail, farmers market and Cass Park will be filled with casual, bustling tunes from 5-8:30 p.m. The event’s closing concert will begin at 7:30 p.m., featuring a collaborative mashup of the evening’s performers as the sun sets.

have even been known to hitch a ride on a boat and play over the water.
“It is unlike any other outdoor music experience in Ithaca,” Janelle Alvstad-Mattson, communications coordinator for the Friends of Stewart Park, said. “You can [experience] something new and interesting in a place where you don’t usually expect to find music.”
In an effort to increase accessibility and allow the evening to continue rain or shine, the event will take place both on the trail and within the farmers market this year.
People with mobility issues who may have not been able to access the event in previous years will have the chance to join the party in the market, Alvstad-Mattson said. She emphasized that she hopes everyone who wants to attend will be able to do so.
“Accessibility has been really at the heart of everything we do,” Alvstad-Mattson said. “We are always thinking about new ways to make things more accessible for people.”
Hundreds of Ithacans will flock to the site to see the performances, Alvstad-Mattson said. Rick Manning, executive director for the Friends of Stewart Park, added that concertgoers will see — and hear — approximately 10-12 musical performers throughout the night.
From Nikolai Ruskin’s lyrical folk music to Jorge T. Cuevas & The Caribe Jazz Allstars’ smooth jams, the night of music will range in energy, but Alvstad-Mattson said one thing encompasses the concert’s vibe.
“It’s very Ithaca,” Alvstad-Mattson said. “It’s eccentric, it’s casual — some people sit and listen, and other people are up grooving and dancing around.”

This summer, a new, innovative exhibit has hatched at the Museum of the Earth, located at 1259 Trumansburg Rd. “Marvelous Mollusks: The Secret World of Shells” opened on June 6, made possible due to support from the National Science Foundation and the Tompkins County Tourism Program.
Mollusks, earmarked by the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) as a vastly underappreciated phylum, are one of the most diverse and ubiquitous groups of animals on the planet, ranging from freshwater clams to deep-sea octopuses. They have an extensive history, especially here in the Finger Lakes, and populate a range of habitats, including oceans, forests, and mountaintops. According to Warren Allmon, director of the PRI and professor of paleontology at Cornell University, mollusks are the second most species-rich group of animals after insects.
The exhibit aims to illustrate the ways mollusks shape our ecosystems, history, and even our palate. Mollusks play an astonishing role in the natural and human world, and
“Marvelous Mollusks” seeks to demonstrate that. “They are in our daily lives, from the garden to the dinner table to jewelry to design,” Allmon explained.
Using videos, interactive displays, and presenting 500 rare specimens from the institute’s world-renowned collection of over one million fossils and modern shells, the exhibit tells the story of mollusks from their origins to the present day, connecting them to art, medicine, and conservation. It features lifesized giant squid and models of other cephalopods, which are the largest invertebrates to have ever roamed the earth. Live land snails from central New York are present in the exhibit, including the Chittenango Ovate Amber Snail, which is one of the most endangered mollusks in the world today.
“Many species of mollusks are endangered due to human activities,” Allmon added. Habitat loss and climate change pose serious threats to the animal group, and the institution hopes to educate society and encourage wise stewardship of the Earth. “It’s more than shellfish, seashells, and slime!” Allmon exclaimed.
The PRI is formally affiliated with Cornell University, and, along with its other public venue for education, the Cayuga Nature Center, collaborates closely with numerous university departments in research, teaching, and public outreach.
An independent nonprofit organization, the PRI has been struggling financially since 2023, when a $30 million donor pledge collapsed, nearly splitting the museum’s annual budget in half and forcing them to downsize operations. Federal funding uncertainties exacerbated the issue this year as funding cuts lost the museum nearly $100,000 in grant money. A recent donation of $1 million has breathed new life into the PRI’s efforts to enrich the greater Ithaca community, but the future of the Museum of the Earth still remains uneasy.
To donate to the PRI and support the museum, visit their website at https://www.priweb.org/donate.
