ometimes in business, there is such a thing as a “winwin” situation: outsourcing a job that saves you money and boosts productivity, for instance.

A profit-boosting merger without layoffs. Or, as our very own local manufacturing powerhouse Ithaca Beer has done, finding a means to advertise and elevate your brand while making a couple extra bucks.

If you’ve been to a music festival this summer, you might have seen an example of it at the beer tent whenever you went to grab a pint: you’d see the standards – Flower Power, Green Trail, maybe Apricot Wheat – beers that, after years of drinking locally, you’ve come to know and love. But alongside them, featured prominently, you’d see something unique: a beer brewed especially for the event, be it the Grassroots Festival of Music and Dance, the Big Mean Barbecue last weekend, the Ithaca Reggae Fest or, as you’ll see in a few weeks, the Sounder IPA – brewed especially for the first-ever Cayuga Sound Festival.

While not the first time the company has brewed a custom beer for an event – Grassroots IPA, you’ll note, has been a thing since 2015, a special IPA was made once the Commons was finished two years ago and the Ithaca Ale House, in celebration of its 10th Anniversary last year, got its own custom Imperial IPA – this summer has seemed to have seen an uptick in the frequency of custom brews the company is producing.

Beyond Grassroots IPA and the Sounder, the company has also knocked out the inaugural Big Mean IPA and the FYAH IPA, this one made custom for Ithaca’s first ever Reggae Fest.

“It’s certainly a trend that’s been picking up,” said Gregg Stacey, the marketing manager for Ithaca Beer.

A Story Of Sustainable Settlement

G

rowing up in the Hemsin region of Northeast Turkey, Umit Sirt had a rich life amongst his many relatives.

Each summer his family joined other villagers walking for two days from their coastal village to their summer highland village, Yayla, where their cows grazed on high-quality grass.

“The summer houses resemble Swiss chalets, built into the mountains; neighbors clustered close to other neighbors.” Umit stated. During the rest of the year the family worked in their restaurant in Antalya.

After attending a prestigious university in Ankara, built by Americans in the ‘60s, Umit arrived in New York City with a mechanical engineering degree in 2000. Specializing in energy

systems, he continued to study and obtained a master’s degree from Stevens Institute of Technology. While studying in NYC Umit also worked at a non-profit weatherization company where he met and worked with fellow staffer Courtney Royal.

Courtney, who grew up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, worked in the Chicago real estate industry before relocating to New York. Colleagues were startled that she would leave big business to become an AmeriCorps member; but for Courtney the pull to “join something bigger than myself ” was strong.

It was here that she was introduced to sustainability in the built environment, learned the basics of the Energy Star program, founded a green building committee and became familiar with energy efficient certification as a standard building practice.

When her AmeriCorps service was over she began working for the sustainability consulting firm in NYC where Umit was working, and she began a Master’s degree in Energy Management.

popular face for years in the Democratic wing of Ithaca and Tompkins County politics, Laura Lewis has declared she will seek the Common Council’s Fifth Ward seat, and is currently circulating petitions in hopes of crossing the 60 signature threshold by Thursday.

Lewis currently serves as the Chair of the city’s Democrats and as the Fifth Ward Chair as well. She will resign both posts to avoid the appearance of impropriety, as the Democratic Ward Committee will be deciding who, if anyone, to endorse in midSeptember.

In the wake of the Presidential election, the term “establishment” has been thrown around as an insult of sorts, weaponized to punish those whom progressive voters deem as too close to the centrist old guard of the Democratic party. Lewis acknowledged that it’s possible someone might

Ithaca Beer Company’s facilities include two separate brewing systems: the first, a 50 barrel system, is the one used for their flagship beers like Flower Power and Apricot Wheat. Then you have the five barrel system used to brew specialty beers that, largely, produces beers going directly to the tap room in rotation – a system that basically allows a new style of beer to be served in the tap room every week or two.

“That system allows our brewers to play a little bit; it’s where we can experiment with something that might be a big seasonal for the following year, Stacey said.

“The brewers can mess with it on that system – it’s kind of an experimentation place.”

hold her background in politics against her, but she views her work as a testament to the love and devotion she feels for the people in the area.

“I don’t know how people will view me,” she said. “I view it as a positive. I love my community, I’m not going to say that the community is absolutely perfect, but I always want to be a voice and an ear. I want to always be listening to others’ concerns, and have a voice.”

Lewis will run as an independent on her own party, the 5th Ward Neighborhood Partners.

Currently, she and Aryeal Jackson are running against each other to replace departed Alderperson Josephine Martell.

The theme of her campaign, she said, is an active focus on listening to constituents and aiming for a level field in representation and action. In terms of her personal methods of accomplishing such goals, she said she’s been able to develop a knack for picking her spots to lead, and alternately knowing how to operate behind-the-scenes when other people are better suited to lead.

“I care about equity, about fairness of opportunity, and about hearing from people,” she said. “I’m good at knowing when to step forward and when to step back. I like to be part of developing leadership in others, and continued on page 10

The beer always comes out great, but sometimes, the beer may not always be where the brewers were trying to go with it: perhaps too hoppy or too fruity to match up with the vision for the end product. Oftentimes, this is the place where the ideas for those one-off festival beers originate: If there’s a surplus of beers in the tap room and the brewers planned on producing an experimental brew anyway, as long as the company planned on producing an experimental seasonal anyway, the company may end up accepting a proposal to partner up.

“For us, it needs to fit into something in terms of a sponsorship,” Stacey said. “While we have been doing more of these specialty beers, we’re not outwardly pursuing it – it’s not like we put a shingle out saying ‘give us a call for your custom beer. We actually turn down more people

Assuming the role of outsider candidate, Jackson is a former teacher turned housecleaner and WRFI journalist who has declared her intention to run for the Fifth Ward Common Council seat, knocking on neighborhood doors to obtain the necessary 60 signatures to appear on the ballot. In accordance with Federal Communication Commission (FCC) rules, her show will be off the air until the election is decided.

Jackson, running independently on the Representation Party ticket, is running against Laura Lewis, who announced her run last week as well. Both are vying to replace outgoing Alderthan we actually do custom beers for.”

This is where the need for that “win-win” scenario comes in.

While brews produced – and served – in-house don’t take any effort to market or transport and are more or less guaranteed to sell, special beers require two things to be successful: they need to be a) worth the effort and exposure since every bit of packaging – except for brews served in-house – has to be licensed with the state and b) need to be able to sell at a volume that justifies the production of the minimum yield needed to make a profit.

And that’s only if the production of that beer fits into the brewery’s already busy schedule: while some breweries may have excess capacity to do some of these custom beers, Ithaca – marketing in 15 states and with around 45 wholesalers – is often producing at capacity, leaving little extra

She said her journalism work, by virtue of the profession itself, would help her have a jump on city issues because she’s been attending meetings to collect information for her job. As Jackson has walked around, interacting with people face to face, she said the main thing she’s learned is that residents mostly want to feel like their representative is paying attention and putting up a fight for them; the process is more meaningful than the results, at least to a certain extent.

“People don’t necessarily need to get their way to feel like they’re part of the community,” Jackson said. “They need to feel like somebody did their due diligence, that somebody genuinely took their concern [...] Even in a community as vocal as ours, people still don’t feel heard.”

This is probably the main gist of Jackson’s campaign: She says the younger generation is feeling apathetic about politics largely because they don’t feel like they’ve been heard, something symptomatic of the problem and proof of why the country is in its current state of disarray. Changing the system from the ground up, she said, is crucial.

She emphasizes that she wants to represent wholly, not simply get elected and go rogue. She said she understands the easy path continued on page 10

room for special projects.

But ultimately, brewing a special beer does present the problem of cannibalizing the sales of other beers they produce, so they really need to take into account the consumption of their other, standard beers compared to the potential consumption of their custom beers in order to ensure there isn’t any excess. Flower Power, for example consists of 75 to 80 percent of Ithaca Beer sales, so the company always wants to be selling Flower Power as opposed to a specialty brand.

To counter this, specialty beers should be seen as a sales tool: not something to rely on.

“It helps maintain interest and variety,” Stacey said. “It’s about maintaining that relationship.”

Officials Start Selling Ithaca Plan

art listening session and part memorial, a crowd of several dozen gathered at The Space @ Greenstar on Thursday for an event to mark Overdose Awareness Day, a nearly three hour forum with one chief focus: how to stop people dying in an epidemic one judge in attendance notes killed more people in one year than the Vietnam War. Hosted by The Drug Policy Alliance and the crafters of Tompkins County’s ambitious drug policy plan, The Ithaca Plan, the forum was the first of a number of planned events centered around the public policy arm of the Ithaca Plan, intended

to be a “first step” in the selling of the policy to area residents; to connect them to a litany of professionals in the community who face the crisis every day and to better articulate the perspectives which inform the direction and rationale of the plan. Thursday night’s event was specifically about one aspect of fighting the opioid crisis – stopping people from dying from preventable overdoses.

While the immediacy of saving people’s lives post-overdose was an important aspect of the evening’s discussion, much of the panel discussion was dedicated to discussing the multifaceted approach needed to not only get people properly connected with treatment, but to disassemble many of the contributing factors that exacerbate a culture of addiction and the

drug trade that feeds it. Such a plan, many said, should be focused on the strengthening of community – of disbursing resources that raise up all communities aff licted by the opioid crisis from the suburbs to the inner cities – and of shifting the response of the opioid crisis from one dictated by law enforcement to one offering medication-based solutions – not just 12-step programs – and law enforcement-assisted diversion programs among the suite of options available to those struggling to get clean. Selling the plan, Mayor Myrick acknowledged, will continue to be an uphill battle. Though Republican officials such as State Senator Tom O’Mara have endorsed essentially every part of the Ithaca Plan but a proposal for supervised injections, Myrick said the key to ensuring all aspects of the plan get through – and gain traction on a greater scale – is by educating one’s self on the solutions proposed and bringing that information directly to the people most poised to make that change: their public officials, whether by mail or by showing up at budget meetings and demanding more funding for programs on the ground or by creating more programming in the first place.

Insurance Changes Could Have Big Impacts On Diversion

A

t the beginning of the ye a r, New York St ate underwent a change, the type of wonky policy shift that seems like nonsense when spelled out on paper in the moment, but which inevitably has impactful consequences.

The change dealt with residential rehabilitation facilities.

Care provided at those facilities would no longer be covered under the state’s Medicaid program, now falling under the purview of the Medicaid Managed Care (MMC), which is run by insurance companies and pay for residential care on a per-day basis. Those are the two types of Medicaid in New York State.

In the industry, the new regulations are referred to as “820,” coined after the new regulations (meant to replace the prior Part 819 rules) that were instituted along with the aforementioned payment changes. The 820 pro-

gram included reformed and uniform treatment practices, broad ly described by Jona h Br u no, a s p ok e s p er s on for New York ’s Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) as adding a physician medical director, standardizing treatment approaches, and adding clinical, rehabilitation and peer services, to ensure comprehensive care.

“The main goal was to create a new, comprehensive model of patient-centered care that would increase the effectiveness and efficiency of our programs,” Bruno wrote in an email.

Cay uga Addiction Recovery Services (CARS) was one of two upstate residential facilities to opt in, adhering to the new guidelines starting on January 1, 2017. CARS has an outpatient location in downtown Ithaca, but also keeps a 60-bed co-ed residential facility in Trumans-

burg.

M MC w a s put i n cha rge of paying for residential drug treatment, at least in part, to cut healthcare costs (since insurance companies want to keep spending dow n) a nd has presu mably had immediate effects in that department, as the average length of stay at the CARS Trumansburg facility was about 190 days last year, and has dropped to 50 this year.

There have been two inverse effects of the change, according to CARS CEO Bill Rusen.

First, people who go to the Trumansburg residential facility are receiving better, more effective care under the new regulations.

But additiona l ly, CARS lost $165,000 in the first six months of 2017.

Although that visit was also short, it was long enough for this couple to hatch a life-changing plan. Shortly after their visit, Taitem made them both a job offer in Ithaca. They’ve now been here seven years.

By the time the Sirt-Royal family welcomed their second child, they had outgrown their downtown house. They decided to design and build an affordable zero-energy, LEED home, and when they stumbled on a for-sale sign on a hillside lot overlooking Cayuga Lake, it was love at first sight. Inspired by their home cultures, they built Hemsin House.

Plus so much more: Son Beckett, now five, was creating inventions in the open dining area, within sight of his parents who were cooking in the kitchen area which features a Turkish tea cabinet mounted on the wall.

Gisele, their beautiful mermaid 3-year-old, was teaching herself to swim in the burgeoning pond outside the living room window.

Nooks where guests can recline and read a book are tucked into enchanting spaces. Porches overlook Cayuga Lake, where this family enjoys leisurely breakfasts on the weekend.

Courtney and Umit are modest about the incredible juggling act it took to design and build an affordable zero energy home, all the while working and parenting two active, young kids.

The couple started this integrated design using Ian Shapiro’s “Green Building Illustrated ” book and created a ‘Owner’s Project Requirement’ very early on. They also did plenty of DIY working late at night on insulation installations, interior painting, tiling and concrete sealing and all the wood finishes.

Today, they now occupy an astounding example of a home built to the point of complete sustainability.

It’s Time To Start Standing Out

n Thursday night the three candidates for the Third District of the Tompkins County Legislature participated in a forum, allowing audience members the opportunity to lob questions at their potential county representatives.

Overall, it was a wholly tame night. The candidates, David Shapiro, Carolina OsorioGil and Henry Granison, were composed and came prepared. There were no stumbles, no campaign-defining moments, no Freudian slips or missteps. But there was also barely any disagreement.

Now that’s not wholly surprising. These candidates, even regardless of their party title or affiliation, are all progressives. They share beliefs on the broad topics that the community cares about: climate change is real, housing needs to be more affordable, racial inequality is systemic. To ask these candidates their views in any broad sense is pointless, because we know them, and if you live here, you probably agree

with them.

Therein lies the problem with Thursday’s forum, and events like it. It might be uncomfortable to watch, but disagreement should not be the exception to the rule. These forums should be crackling, there should be fire and competition. Every person should walk out of there either knowing who won, or at the very least, knowing who lost. We should always choose discomfort that begats quality and honesty over superficiality that produces nothing.

That all sounds like a very cynical critique, and yet the fact remains: the vast majority of people in Ithaca and Tompkins County hold progressive political beliefs. So... great: at least you agree with the people competing for your vote. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it all underlines the point that when there is such a lack of thought diversity among candidates, the onus falls on the voters to do the heavy lifting. The political committees, like the First and Third Ward Democrats on Thursday, have contin u ed on page 7

The likelihood of overhearing a casual conversation about the later plays of Christopher Marlowe increases in direct proportion to the likelihood of being run down by a texting undergraduate driving a BMW through a red light.

It must be admitted there’s more energy around here, and it would be nice to make the noobs feel welcome. So, as a public service, the Surrounded by Reality Welcome Team has put together a very brief supplement to the recent Student Survival Guide…

Apparently it’s a crime in this town to have a craving for specific comestibles.

Dogs - This is the dog-walkingest town in North America. 60.6 percent of the Ithaca Festival parade is canine. Do not be alarmed. Around here, expecting a dog to hold up its end of a conversation is not necessarily a symptom of mental weakness. (Not exactly a sign of genius, either.)

Taughannock - Pronounced “tug”, as in tugboat, “ann” as in Ann Coulter sucks, and “ick,” as in ‘Ick, Cayuga Lake’s become a blue-green algae-choked hot tub.’

Politics – Here’s a test to see if you’ll fit in: which person would you rather be next to in line with at Wegmans – Donald Trump or Kim Jong-un? It’s a trick question, of course, since neither of them would come within 500 miles of Ithaca.

hen last we visited Jeannette Luther, ten year veteran Spencer Van Etten 6th grade teacher, she was headed to a Greek refugee camp for Syrians forced to flee their home country. So how did her Summer Plans work out?

Chalkida, Greece is a small town, about the size of Ithaca. When Jeannette brainstormed with the other international volunteers at the refugee camp in Chalkida, she called upon her most successful teaching strategies: “My Fish Philosophy” which comes from Pikes Place Seattle Fish Market staff: “At work be pleasant and have fun!“ So many kids we worked with and their families have been through so much— separation from loved ones, torture, injury, death of loved ones. Displacement from their homes, country and culture.

Volunteering in such a tragic setting requires even more skill, patience, flexibility than we need at home in our classrooms. It was demanding work.”

n Nick Reynold’s absorbing article on the Ku Klux Klan the idea of “populist” seems be reduced to nativist reactionary.

Populism, however, has both left-wing and right-wing expressions much like the Republican and Democratic parties had at different times in their histories. Here’s what the People’s (Populist) Party stood for at its first national U.S. convention in 1891: a national currency issued by the federal government only and without the use of banking corporations; government ownership of all transportation and communication lines; a graduated income tax; establishment of postal savings system; direct election of U.S. senators; adoption of the secret ballot, initiative, and referendum; prohibition of alien ownership of land; a shorter working day for industrial labor; and restrictions on immigration.

Some of these goals, to our continued benefit, were realized. Some were realized and gotten rid of: the Postal Savings System was dismantled after decades of relentless opposition by the banking industry. (Sen. Bernie Sanders, among others, is now trying to reestablish it.) Some of these goals remain for today’s citizens to ponder. This will best happen in a robust political arena that includes populist ideas.

There’s a pilot program being discussed in our Common Council in which every new resident will get a hemp bag of local organic kale with our compliments as a welcome gift.

We’re not that mean - Just as newcomers quicken the pace of life here, you’ll see that we’re pretty chill as a rule.

You might find it’s hard to leave once you get used to this place. 71 percent of us came here ‘temporarily’ and can’t seem to leave.

reat article. I especially liked the quote, “If anyone was going to feel the traffic it would be me,” from the person who recently moved here from a major city (ps The Rongo has closed and reopened many times over many years). Or how, “with careful planning,” the tiny school district, with no experience doing it, can suddenly accommodate an influx of over eighty students. Most districts across the country are facing a crisis of overcrowding in the classroom, when did we start complaining about class sizes being too small? And if people are so worried about the service industry, I hope they understand what effect even a slight increase in loitering will have on tourism and a fragile local economy. I feel like this is becoming a battle between some people who moved to the area because it’s a great place to live, and don’t see why it’s such an issue, vs some locals who understand the impact a project this big will have on a town this small. I’m not against low income housing, but Hamilton Square is large enough to change the dynamic of Trumansburg and I don’t think that’s a good idea.

a necessary opportunity in organizing these types of events. And the only way to do that service justice, and not let it waste away, is to show up informed.

We know, journalists telling the public to get informed is about the most obnoxious, and frequent, thing the media does, but this time it’s not for us, it’s for you all. Nuance and specificity are now requirements, and if asking the safe, general question hasn’t worked yet it won’t anytime soon either. If candidates in a race are unable to differentiate themselves, then you have to do it. Because the one aspect of this race I think everyone can agree upon is this: each of those three people that sat up there on Thursday is smart enough to serve on Tompkins County Legislature. So now it’s time to ask the tougher questions, force the candidates’ hands, and see who’s left standing at the end. The electorate has to come prepared to test candidates, otherwise it boils down to a popularity contest.

And we’ve seen how that goes, not long ago.

The duty to vote is essentially the responsibility to decide. Theoretically, the act of voting is supposed to be the culmination of the democratic process, the most significant part of said process but also the only portion that the public has any tangible control over. But in situations like these, voters have to take every opportunity to exert the indirect control they do have over the rest of the process.

Local United Way sets up fund to benefit Hurricane Harvey victims In response to the displacement of thousands of individuals due to Hurricane Harvey, the United Way of Tompkins County is has set up a “Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund” in collaboration with United Ways in impacted areas for those that wish to make a contribution. 100 percent of these gifts will be used to help those that have been impacted by Hurricane Harvey through the United Ways of Texas and Louisiana.

A year ago Jeannette travelled to Morocco to experience an Arabic lifestyle. This led her to consider working in the Middle East. In a few days Jeannette will make the 13 hour flight from JFK Airport to Abu Dhabi, the island capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The diverse UAE population is comprised of citizens of UAE and emigres from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, UK, South Africa, Philippines, Iran, Egypt and other countries. Packed in her huge suitcases are some of her favorite motivational props and ideas. She’ll be teaching 5th grade this year, looking to roll out the makings of her College Awareness project.

“Fifth grade is not too early to inspire kids that they can become whatever they dream of becoming, if they will do the hard work,” she said.

Jeannette’s school campus in Ruwais is a long drive from the capital and its many offerings.

She is passionate about fitness and hopes to share her passion for health in her small community. The capital city has LesMills fitness programs. “I smiled when I heard some teachers travel the two hours to the capital once a month to take these amazing fitness classes!”

It won’t be long the pressure will be on for Jeannette to teach that as well.

Years ago Jeannette heard Dave Matthews sing out “take what you can from your dreams, make them as real as anything” and that inspired her to live out her dreams of living abroad again.

Her faith and all she has shared with her community give her confidence for her exciting next chapter in the Middle East.

The Department of Justice announced in late July that it would be reforming the guidelines of the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program, which is toted on the Bureau of Justice Assistance’s website as the “leading source of federal funding to state and local jurisdictions.”

Dozens of cities, counties and organizations also signed onto the brief, 36 in total. The brief is in support of the City of Chicago in City of Chicago v.

Sessions.

According to listings of the 2017 and 2016 JAG award recipients, Ithaca and Tompkins County have not received funding over the last two years under the JAG program.

In The Woods This Weekend’s BioBlitz Is More Than Just A Learning Opportunity.

ight alongside Route 96 and just steps from Trumansburg’s center, it can be too easy to assume everything there is to be known about Smith Woods is already known. 32 acres in size, the wood is filled with dozens of trees

approaching 150 feet tall, some 300 years old. It’s one of the region’s oldest forests, one of the 3 percent of old growth forests statewide to survive the deforestation and consequences of human development that, by the start of the 20th Century, had left about 90 percent of all of New York State bald.

Beyond that, there’s not much left to say. Objectively, that is.

Beyond the trees, their age or the acreage of the lot, not much else is known –Marvin Pritts about this little woodland:

“There are still things that have to be discovered in old growth forests,” Pritts said. “And because there are so few of them, there’s no place left to explore for those things.”

Starting Friday night and stretching well into Saturday afternoon, about 80 scientists from institutions around the county are going to try and learn at least a little bit about these mysterious woods. They hope the com-

munity learns a little something too.

At 4 p.m., Cornell’s School of Integrative Plant Sciences – in partnership with the Cayuga Nature Center – will kick off its first ever BioBlitz, a 24-hour event to survey any and all living species in both Smith Woods and in the woods surrounding the nature center. Encompassing 12 separate fields from microbiology to ornithology, the event seeks to build a scientific understanding of the two woodlands, examining the spectrum of spe-

cies present in the old growth of the Smith Woods to the relatively new woodlands around the nature center to see how they compare and contrast.

In doing so, they’ll do something that’s never been done before: building the firstever comprehensive list of species in an old growth and secondary growth forest in Tompkins County, a means to compare how food chains within the same biome have evolved in a disturbed environment versus one that, for centuries, has remained relatively undisturbed.

“It’s going to be awesome scientifically,” said Paleontological Research Institute director Warren Allmon. “Scientists are going to come out no matter what the weather is; if the weather is rainy, the public will have a cool opportunity to. The scientists aren’t doing this just to interact with the public, they’re doing it to interact with the species. Some will be interested in talking to people, some couldn’t care less, but there could be some terrific opportunities there.”

Why Do A BioBlitz?

According to Cornell University professor and co-author of the definitive book on Smith Woods, Marvin Pitts, old growth forests are the most diverse ecosystems that exist in nature, ecosystems that over time, have seen a broad spectrum of species evolve timeintensive relationships with other species within that ecosystem. Each becomes codependent on each other, forming food chains complicated to a point that takes years of unperturbed growth to develop. These species all evolve together, so when there’s a change in the environment, there’s an expanding ripple effect that may otherwise go unseen to the naked eye – one that can be difficult to sense, predict or understand. Microbes evolve which feed certain fungi; fungi support certain insects, insects support the basis of mammals and other species that eventually learn to thrive off each other.

“What we have seen, the difference between Smith Woods – which is relatively untouched – and the forest at Cayuga Nature Center is the species composition between the two forests; we already know there are going to be differences,” said Alexandra Moore, a geologist and researcher for PRI who worked to coordinate the BioBlitz. “One of the cool things about the BioBlitz is going to be our ability to quantify what those differences are.”

The issue is, without a complete understanding of the species that are actually present, nobody can definitively say how those relationships work, particularly when comparing an old growth forest where these relationships were given time to establish themselves naturally versus one with relatively new growth.

“For me, I’m looking at these kids and I’m thinking, ‘I see 25 future scientists,’” said Moore. “So how can I get this really cool stuff our scientists are doing in a form that’s accessible to them and get them really excited about it and want to do it themselves… it’s super important and, I hate to bring our political situation into this, but we have leaders who simply don’t value science. The potential harmful outcomes are all around us. Ultimately, down the road, you want people who are able to ask questions.”

Part of this type of education will come by each group of scientists setting up a table at the Cayuga Nature Center, where every group involved will be able to interact with the public and get people involved not just in counting up each species and learning about them while they work, but to give them a sense of involvement in the process itself.

“I used to be a complete dyed in the wool academic,” said BioBlitz co organizer Scott LaGreca, curator of the Cornell Plant Pathology Herbarium (basically the university’s collection of fungi). “So I just always brushed off this outreach stuff. But I’ve worked in museums and I know how important it is to get the science out there… people connect on all these different levels, but one of the basic things we do as human beings is put names on things… it’s one of the first things you do as a kid. So that’s one of the basic things about this whole event, learning the names of the plants and fungi in our own backyard.”

“It’s about the survey,” he added, “but it’s also about getting the public excited about it.”

Ultimately, the event itself is about learning. While the internet, LaGreca said, has given many of us the illusion that all that there is to be learned has been, the lack of understanding of the nature in our own backyards proves otherwise. “There are still things that have to be discovered in old growth forests,” Pritts said.

“And because there are so few of them, there’s no place left to explore for those things. But just think… there might even be the potential for new drugs that could only be found in old growth forests in the soil that we’ve almost completely wiped out: the places to discover these things are few and far in between.”

In addition to her experience in politics, Lewis has been involved with Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services as a member of the Board of Directors for the affordable housing agency (another post she said she would be leaving if she was elected to Common Council).

Partially as a result of her work with the Democrats, Lewis has long contemplated a run for an elected office, but her retirement last year from a long career in student services at Cornell has now left her with the requisite time to dedicate to holding a political post like Common Council. She’s proud of how she and her fellow ward chairs have been able to cultivate a strong Democrat contingency among residents, one that not only votes blue but is also interested in participating in government and communicating with elected

One of the essential parts of fostering a productive community, Jackson said, is teaching people the political process and duties of the smaller, more niche bodies of local government. For instance, if a resident wants to submit a concern about police tactics in the city, bringing it before Common Council might not be the most effective path, even though they are the most notable body; presenting questions to the Community

CARS is in the ‘red’ as a result of a hiccup in the system: CARS serves as the de facto drug diversion program for the court system, Rusen said, which means once someone enters drug court they’ll often be redirected to CARS instead of doing more jail time. When that person enters CARS, they have to sign up for an MMC plan. The problem is those plans can sometimes not actually begin for weeks, dependent entirely on the arbitrary point of whether the order is placed before or after the 15th of the current month.

And CARS doesn’t get paid until that plan starts. Which means, of the average 50 day stay, CARS might not get paid for as much as 42 days of care.

Rusen said CARS always knew that was going to happen; a good amount of their clientele over the entire existence has paid via state Medicaid. But the central issue is the difference between what OASAS had estimated the number of state-insured patients to be, and what the number has actually been. Rusen reports that between 20 to 30 percent of the patients who enter the facility are not covered.

Participating in the community, she said, has been a major part of her life and something she hopes to pass on in whatever role retired life has for her.

“We are one city, one community,” she said. “I would work in collaboration with other council members representing other wards. We have to look at mutual gains and mutual benefits [...] If housing is built in the second ward as opposed to the fifth ward, people in the fifth ward still benefit.”

The Fifth Ward candidates will attend a meet-and-greet with constituents next Sunday at a time and location to be announced.

It’s this kind of lesson, one which will help the community become more vocal and active that Jackson said she hopes to impart upon constituents if she is elected. Her time as a teacher has informed that objective – the job of Common Council is not to tell others how to think, she said, but to research the subject while listening to the viewpoints of their fellow community members before coming to a decision and voting. Perhaps even have a coffee with voters each Sunday morning, something Jackson mentioned as an idea she’s been toying with.

“If any community in the country has the potential to be an example for the rest of the country, it’s Ithaca,” Jackson said. “And there’s still some stuff we’re not getting right.”

There will be a Fifth Ward candidates meet-and-greet on Sunday, at a time and place to be announced.

OASAS did not confirm or deny that figure, or clarify whether or not it was significantly higher than their prediction.

OASAS assured him that in the event the new system was flawed, state aid would be available to help bridge the financial gap. But that aid has not yet come and, Rusen said, OASAS has told him to check back at the end of the year so they can further assess the financial impacts of the 820 shift.

Another wrinkle would be if President Donald Trump follows through on his promise to declare a national emergency regarding the opioid crisis (a promise later walked back by other members of the administration). If a national emergency is formally declared, it’s likely much more funding would become accessible to places like CARS in order to address the problem.

In the meantime, CARS is going to be fine for the short term, its sheer size fending off the lost funds it may indeed keep incurring. But in the long run, Rusen harbors reservations about how the system can possibly work for small to mid-size facilities looking to enter the rehabilitation market.

If it keeps rolling at its current pace, CARS would need around $330,000 each year just to break even.

t seemed a little strange to see local college football kicking off before Labor Day, but Butterfield Stadium saw the Alfred Saxons come into town to face the Bombers on Saturday. It also felt strange to call the Bombers vs. Saxons game a nonconference affair, but given I.C. is now a member of the Liberty League, that is exactly what it was.

The afternoon felt like autumn, but the leaves were still green and so was Ithaca’s head coach. This is Dan Swanstrom’s first year as a head coach, and while the Bombers came out on the short end of a very close contest, there was no shame in that outcome, given the Saxons are ranked 21st in the nation.

The first half could have been called The Will Gladney Show, as the 6’3”, 225 pound sophomore from just down the road in Owego showed off quite a skill set. Not only did Gladney catch nine passes for 132 yards and a touchdown, he also threw a 25-yard completion to fellow receiver Zach Raymond. That opening-driver trickery gave the Bombers a much-needed boost, as the Saxons has scored on their opening possession, but the drive ended on a missed field goal.

It is a Defensive Coordinator’s job to “plug the holes,” so to speak, and A.U.’s D.C. did just that. Gladney would catch just one pass in the second half, and would finish with 147 yards on the day.

The hosts actually led 17-13 at the half, and put up over 300 yards of offense, so the fact that they started the season with a loss is certainly no reason to lose any sleep. The Bombers will travel to Brockport, another Empire 8 opponent, for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday. *** The local sports scene lost a pair of good guys in August, and I was proud to call them my friends.

Dave Barr passed just shy of his 90th birthday, and what a colorful character he was. He was Ithaca born and bred, played high school football for the Little Red in the ‘40s, and then joined the U.S. Navy. He just missed WWII, and was honorably discharged in 1948.

“Honorably” is an apt description for everything Dave ever did, and he was a key figure in starting Ithaca’s Pee Wee Hockey program. He would run the J.S. Barr investment company, and as his obituary stated, “he took the company from ticker tape to computers before his retirement in 2005.” A lot of people slept well knowing their money was in Dave Barr’s capable hands.

I got to know Dave in the 1980’s, and at that time he was in already in his ‘60s but still playing softball in the city league. His knees were a few steps behind his spirit, but the energy and attitude he brought to the ballpark was infectious and inspiring. His son, Derek, would follow Dave into the league, and I remember when Derek took a job as a member of the Ithaca Police Department. That seems like about five years ago, but Derek is now retired. I hope he carries his dad’s torch and plays softball until he’s in his seventies. *** Eugene Madsen was a beloved microbiology professor at Cornell, and he played his trumpet whenever asked for his students, his family, his friends and the community. I was at a gymnastics meet a while ago, and Gene’s rendition of the Star Spangled Banner was a fine one.

I got to know him when he was working on his PhD at Cornell in the ‘80s, and he worked out regularly with the men’s gymnastics team. I can still remember seeing Eugene – approaching 30 – getting heavily chalked up and doing “Giants” on the high bar. When performing a Giant, the gymnast grips the bar and swings long enough and hard enough to generate the momentum to swing all the way around the bar, fully extended. Very few people can pull that off.

When I learned that Eugene had passed due to a tragic tractor accident, I went to his Facebook page, and the first thing I saw was a video of him wearing 1980’s era shorts, pulling off a Giant. The video was shot just a few weeks ago. Eugene Madsen was 64.

chemicals, which are also referred to as “feel good” hormones, include serotonin, oxytocin, and dopamine. At the same time, massage therapy decreases stress hormones such as cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine.

Aside from providing general pain and stress relief, massage therapy can also remedy the physiological effects of cancer—specifically the strain that chemotherapy puts on the body—as well as function as an extension of the healing process. “The American Cancer Society views massage as an important complementary therapy during cancer treatment,” explains Valkenburgh, who, over this past summer, visited with cancer groups consisting of patients and survivors at Schuyler County Hospital. Together, they discussed the ability of massage therapy to serve as a complement to cancer treatment.

However, in now way is oncology massage intended to directly combat cancer, Valkenburgh says. “The most important thing to take note of is that massage is not a cancer treatment—it’s an additive: something that goes along with cancer treatment to help

provide comfort for cancer patients.”

Inner Peace Floats, where Valkenburgh is one of two licensed massage therapists, offers discounted massages for those that either are currently undergoing—or have previously received—cancer treatment, and have been referred by another treatment institution. These discounted massages, which cost $35 instead of the usual $55, generally aren’t unique in any way, unless the patient’s treatment requires something more rigorous: they are merely traditional, light Swedish massages, which feature long, gliding strokes. Although, for the recipients, whose bodies can be under unimaginable levels of discomfort, these massages have the potential to relieve pain, reduce stress, encourage relaxation, and improve sleep patterns, thus interrupting the pain-spasmpain cycle and allowing the body to relax, according to Valkenburgh.

Fall Arts preview Autumn Theatrics a look at what’s to come on the regional stage

thaca’s burgeoning theatrical scene, a bracing blend of professional, student and community talents, has plenty in store for the fall season, including a brandnew troupe, a new building, a new artistic director, new and continuing collaborations, and a mix of premieres and classics.

The new troupe is Walking on Water Productions, founded by Priscilla Hummel, a director/choreographer and educator who spent her last nine years in professional theatre in Chicago before recently returning to the Finger Lakes.

WoW intends to focus on family-oriented fare, particularly classic musicals, beginning with Godspell November 10–12 at CSMA. (walkingonwaterproductions.org) The Cherry Artspace’s custom-built theatre, on Cherry Street next to the inlet (behind Wegmans) got broken in as the home of the Hangar Theatre Lab Company over the summer. It will celebrate its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony next Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 3:30 p.m.

Artistic Director Sam Buggeln is deep into rehearsals for the Cherry’s season opener, a world premiere by Romanian playwright and Ithaca College professor Saviana Stanescu. What Happens Next “explores the relationship between two (or more?) women whose identities seem to continually shift in a mysterious high-tech room.” Stanescu beams with joy describing the rehearsal process; she describes the work as “a cheerful

dystopia,” with echoes of Godot. Catch it Thursdays through Saturdays, September 1423. Come the holidays, the Cherry remounts their version of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen, with additional music and songs. The Cherry aims to be “radically local, radically international, and seriously fresh,” with spring productions of international plays. Biology vs. culture, gender vs. race, the barbed comedy of Smart People (September 3–24) throws a racially mixed quartet of high achievers into the thickets of romance, professional ambition and ideology. One-Hijra Stand-Up Comedy Show takes the boards October 8–29. “’B’ an intersex comedian” from Athens, Georgia, attempts “to explain and reconcile their identity through stories of high school antics, feats of the gods and Galileo Galilei” with the help of sidekick bass-player.

Two Kitchen veterans, director Wendy Dann and actor Karl Gregory take on Duncan MacMillan’s acclaimed solo/interactive play Every Brilliant Thing, in which a young boy tries to show his depressed mother that life is worth living by making up a list (“ice cream, water fights, things with stripes…”).

Ramping up for a new season under the kitchen Theatre’s new director

Bevin O’Gara at Gimme! on a rain-soaked Sunday afternoon, her new theatre digs just a block away were hosting a weekly church service, while the displaced actors in the Kitchen Theatre’s first play of the season, Lydia R. Diamond’s Smart People, were having a casual rehearsal in the Kitchen offices. As we spoke, it was just four hours until the first preview.

Bevin was calm, energized, a little worried about some technical glitches yet to be solved. But she was where she wanted to be after two decades immersed in the Boston theatre scene: at the head of her own theatre company.

Well technically, it isn’t her first time as an Artistic Director, “At 14 years old I was acting at a community theatre [on Long Island], and the college seniors who were running it were graduating, so I went down to the Recreation Dept. and asked if I could run the theatre. And that’s what I did my sophomore, junior and senior years of high school.”

College brought Bevin to Boston, where most recently she was associate producer at the Huntington, one of the nation’s leading regional theatres.

She had frequent free-lance directing gigs, as well as extensive networking in Boston’s rich theatre community while at the Huntington.

From Circus Culture, OI heads over to the Cherry Artspace for the regional premiere of Song from the Uproar: The Lives and Deaths of Isabelle Eberhardt by Missy Mazzoli, as part of their commitment to producing works by contemporary women composers in every season. Uproar is based on the life of the Swiss-born Eberhardt who in the late 19th century “travelled alone to Algeria. She dressed as a man, converted to Islam, and joined a Sufi order, roamed the desert on horseback, and fell in love with an Algerian soldier.” (Cincinnati Opera) (November 1117). Pirates of Penzance will be the New Year Eve’s gala at the Hangar. Come spring OI ups the ante with stagings of both Carmen and Tosca! (operaithaca.org) Another company centered on musical delights is the Ithaca Savoyards. They will be presenting Rupert Holme’s delicious melodrama The Mystery of Edwin Drood based on Dickens’ unfinished novel. This giddy pastiche of Victorian music hall has a special gimmick: the audience votes on the ending. September 15–17 at the Hangar Theatre. (savoyardsithaca.org) Speaking of Dickens and the Hangar, the theatre has commissioned an adaptation of The Christmas Carol from local playwright Aoise Stratford as an annual holiday event.

Artistic Director Michael Barakiva will helm, and plans to cast locally. Barakiva is excited both by the playfulness of Stratford’s adaptation and its Gothic elements. It will play December 10–24. (hangartheatre.org) Civic Ensemble, “Ithaca’s Public Theatre,” is deep in the process of devising its fourth community-based play, based on the theme of education this year. Civic involves the community in brainstorming, developing and finally performing these plays about urgent local topics. The Education play is just moving into rehearsals, and there is still room to get involved. Civic’s third collaboration with Cornell’s Dept. of Performing and Media Arts (PMA) is Climates of Change, which will be shaped in a course co-led by Assoc. Prof. Sara Warner and Civic’s Godfrey Simmons. (December 1 & 2) Much more is happening with Civic, check them out at civicensemble.org.

Moving up to the hills, at Cornell’s Schwartz Center the season opens with Bertolt Brecht’s always relevant parable The Caucasian Chalk Circle, directed by Beth Milles on the beautiful Kiplinger proscenium stage (affectionately abbreviated “the Kip”.) A sharp satire/investigation of war, governance, class and motherhood, the key question is who gets to keep a child, abandoned by the rich woman and saved by the peasant Katrina. Milles has cast a dozen undergraduates as an ensemble of storytellers and songsters. This is sure to be a highlight of the season, but runs only one weekend, so don’t blink! (September 21-23) Rebekah Maggor brings us another contemporary play from the Mideast, Hamlet Wakes Up Late. Renowned Syrian poet and playwright Mamduh Adwan reimagines “Hamlet [as] a narcissistic prince, blissfully unaware of his people’s bleak reality. Distracted by drink and theatre rehearsals, Hamlet fails to notice the rise of a brutal plutocratic dictatorship.” As she did with last fall’s stunning Desert of Light, Maggor will be combining text, original

music, and movement in this production in the Flex Theatre. Her first note to her cast quotes Adwan’s Hamlet:, “We’ll make this play into a trap; We’ll make this play stab!”

In the Schwartz’s intimate Black Box are the annual 10-Minute Playfest (September 28, 29 & October 1) and a student-helmed presentation of Joshua Harmon’s popular comedy Bad Jews (November 2-4). (pma. cornell.edu) Ithaca College’s Dept. of Theatre, which trains actors and designers for the profession, has a remarkably rich season planned, kicking off with Angels in America: Part 1: Millennium Approaches. While Tony Kushner’s visionary play has never been absent since its debut in the early 80s, it has seen an upswing in major productions recently as we move from the Reagan to the Trump and Brexit years. Guest director Robert Moss — whose history includes stints leading the Hangar, Syracuse Stage, and founding Playwright’s Horizons — is an accomplished storyteller and mentor of students and young professionals. His production of Angels at the Hangar remains one of my most treasured outings (October 3–12).

November brings lighter fare with Leonard Bernstein’s breezy Wonderful Town, the first of his two collaborations with book & lyric writers Adolph Green and Betty Comden (Singing in the Rain). Two sisters from Ohio end up in mid-20th century New York City’s bohemian enclave, Greenwich Village. IC’s new head of musical theatre, Courtney Young, directs and choreographs.

Cynthia Henderson helms In the Red and Brown, playing December 5-10. Oya must decide between her college track team dreams and her ailing mother in this “female rite of passage.” This play forms part of Tarell Alvin McCraney’s Brother/Sister trilogy which combines Yoruba mythology with contemporary African-American life.

A MacArthur “genius” fellow, McCraney has become well-known as the Oscar-winning co-writer of Moonlight which is based on his own play. (ithaca.edu/mainstage) Other works by other com+panies will undoubtedly turn up, so keep to the TimesTable. Look this spring for activity from other local companies. The Homecoming Players will present their sixth full season, a mix of concert readings and full productions (homecomingplayers. org) February will see new short plays by the local playwrights of Wolfs Mouth Theatre Company, as well as an independent production of local playwright Judith Pratt’s Maize, based on the life of Cornell’s Nobelwinning scientist Barbara McClintock.

Theatre Incognita is promising to return after a hiatus, and has begun planning a series of staged readings from the Black and Latinx repertoires. Running To Places will bring its amazing teen-cast musicals (and occasional plays) for an 11th season. Trumansburg’s Encore Players will have something fun.

George Sapio is organizing his annual Ithaca Fringe Festival for late April. Not to mention the rich student-run theater productions at the college, including Cornell’s Risley Theatre. And and the summer season comes around again with the Hangar and Ithaca Shakespeare Company in full swing.

he fall classic music schedule is full of great talent and has several events that are bound to bring the community together around these musicians sharing their gifts with us. Here is a quick preview of what’s to come through the rest of fall. Be sure to check dates and venues, as schedules frequently change.

Special Events One thing I am particularly excited for is the chance to see Latif Bolat at Barnes Hall.

Performing at Cornell on October 14, the singer, songwriter and composer of Turkish mystic devotional music is highly acclaimed as a musician, having won awards from the European Union, California Arts Council and the Turkish Ministry of Culture for his work combining history and his native folklore with poetry and true to tradition tonality. San Francisco Weekly has referred to his voice as “walnut-hued” and that it “rolls without effort.” In addition to his pleasant singing voice, he also will be playing the traditional baglama, an instrument similar to a lute but with a longer neck. Turkish devotional poetry from the 13th-century mystic Rumi, as well as later Sufi writers are integral parts of the performance which invites the listeners to think about socio political factors influence culture and the art that surrounds it.

Being able to see the St. Thomas Choir of Leipzig is also a very special treat. Taking place on November 10 at Sage Chapel, this ensemble based out of Leipzig, Germany was established in the year 1212 and was led by J.S. Bach. He led them for 27 years and the group would premiere many of his works.

Made up from 50 boys and men, the St. Thomas Choir of Leipzig is touring the world to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s Reformation.

Orchestral and Ensemble Presentations The Catalyst Quartet, an extremely

The winners of the Gianni Bergamo Classical Music Award (Switzerland) in 2012, The Catalyst Quartet is made of up alumni from the legendary Sphinx Competition, a renowned strings competition in Detroit, Michigan that has gone onto produce a number of notable musicians. They have had performances all over the world, including sold-out performances at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Chicago’s Harris Theater, Miami’s New World Center, and Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall.

Similarly at the Hangar Theatre, on Saturday November 18th, The Ithaca Community Orchestra will be coming together with the Opus Ithaca School of Music to present a wonderful night of classical music. Starting with Aaron Copland’s Fanfare of Common Man, this night will include many great pieces including Jean Sibelius’ Finlandia which will be conducted by Aaron Burgess, Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto in G Minor (3rd Movement) with solo violinist Maya Johnson, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #5, 3rd and 4th movements.

Directed by Madeline Schatz-Harris, this will surely be a night of great performances.

The Community Arts Partnership’s Busy Season

L

overs of the changing seasons and locally sourced art will jump for joy at what’s to come from the Community Arts Partnership (CAP) this fall. Through fundraisers, workshops, and more, CAP’s fall season is shedding light on the work of local artists.

CAP, the Tompkins County arts

council, was founded in 1991 with the goal of connecting local artists with their audiences. Since then, the Partnership has enriched art-loving Ithacans with a wide variety of programs and workshops yearround, like the Ithaca Artists Market in July, or the Spring Writes Literary Festival in May.

But now that the summer is over, CAP is ringing in the new season with a full schedule of events that will be sure to entertain everyone from the finest arts connoisseur to a tourist passing through the city of Ithaca for the first time.

In the ArtSpace For CAP, the first month of fall means one thing: the CAP-A-Palooza Art Sale. This annual fundraising event, which takes place in the ArtSpace Gallery in Center Ithaca, presents a unique collection of art donated from local private collectors in the Ithaca area, all of which is for sale.

Robin Schwartz, the director of programs at CAP, says that her goal in organizing this fundraiser was to give everyone an opportunity to appreciate (and

hopefully purchase) art that may have been set aside by collectors. “I wanted to help people get art of out their closets,” she says.

The fundraiser, which will run until October 1, is open to the public, who are encouraged to buy pieces straight off the walls. The works are priced between $20 and $400, with a variety of vintage, modern, and original artwork to choose from. Visitors are welcome to walk in anytime during regular business hours and, hopefully, they’ll leave with a few new and unique pieces of art to brighten up their homes.

After the month-long fundraiser comes to an end at the beginning of October, the ArtSpace will become home to an intriguing exhibit of pieces by artist Dan McPheeters, called “Bubblescapes: Dance of the Spheres.”

From October 5 to October 30, visitors will be welcomed to explore “the Cosmos and the vast Dance of Quantum Bubbles” through McPheeters’ swirling, colorful pigment ink pieces.

From November 1 to the 26, the ArtSpace will display pieces from and inspired by the Ithaca Underground community in an exhibit called “A Decade in the Underground: Posters, Art, and Artifacts.” The exhibit will showcase posters

After the Underground exhibit comes to a close, the ArtSpace will showcase the work of artist Fernando Llosa in “Beyond Ourselves.” Llosa’s work will be on display from November 28 to December 29.

The Greater Ithaca Art Trail While the exhibits run strong in the ArtSpace, CAP’s autumnal pride and joy will begin in October with the 18th annual Greater Ithaca Art Trail, a countywide event that invites locals, tourists, and everyone in between into the homes and studios of Tompkins county artists. For two weekends in October, 34 studios across the county will be open to the general public, something that Schwartz calls a “huge opportunity” for both artists and the community.

In October, the Johnson Museum will also be offering two programs that coincide with the exhibit. On October 7, families are encouraged to come to the Art-Full Family Day “Under the Sea” event, a family-friendly class led by theatre artist and educator Holly Adams. And on October 21, people of all ages are welcome to come to “Paper and Glass: A Celebration of Artistic Process,” a workshop in some of the techniques used in the fall exhibits, with featured demonstrations of flameworking by the Corning Museum of Glass.

Power, Haunting, and Resilience

On September 9, the Johnson Museum will unveil its third exhibit for the fall semester: IraqiPalestinian artist Sama Alshaibi’s photography collection, “Silisa.” Alshaibi, a former political refugee and current chair and professor of photography and video art at the University of Arizona in Tuscon, aims to “represent the joining of individuals to one another, humans with the natural world, and the self to the divine” through her vibrantly geometric photography.

The collection, which opened originally at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, was inspired by Ibn Batūtah, a 14th century Moroccan scholar who travelled the medieval world whose accounts of his travels are still widely consulted today in medieval studies. Alshaibi retraced his travels through the Middle East, North African, and the Maldives, documenting her journey with striking photography that promises to inspire questions about borders, both the physical and the metaphysical.

On October 12, Alshaibi herself will come to Cornell to discuss her work in a talkback with students, faculty, and the public. For those interested in learning even more about the themes of “Silisa,” a roundtable discussion between professors and graduate students at Cornell will take place on November 19.

The museum kicked off their fall season with the mid-August opening of “Power, Haunting, and Resilience,” an exhibit that explores the aftermath of 38 years of martial law in Taiwan in the mid- to late-20th century.

The exhibit, which was curated by An-yi Pan, an associate professor in the Department of the History of Art and Visual Studies at Cornell, and Liu Yung-Jen, a curator at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, features a wide variety of visually striking pieces, each following a theme of what it is to experience agency and power after nearly four decades of oppression.

This exhibit, which is open to students and the general public till December 17, is serving a dual purpose in its display. Not only is it shedding light on an aspect of Asian culture that is often overlooked by western society, but it is working alongside a new initiative by the university’s Einaudi Center for International Students. The initiative, which plans to explore four different themes over the course of four semester, is getting its start this semester with a theme of “Haunting,” and students at the Einaudi Center will be using the work in the “Power, Haunting, and Resilience” exhibit to further their goals.

ith four new fascinating exhibitions, ranging from the intricately scientific to the powerfully abstract, opening for the semester, Cornell students and locals alike will all find something intriguing to explore this fall at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum at Cornell University.

“This is an incredible semester,” says Stephanie Wiles, the Richard J. Schwartz Director of the museum.

The Johnson Museum will officially kick off its fall season on September 8 with their Fall Party, an event that invites students, museum members, and the general public to see what’s new at the museum for the fall semester.

The second addition to the Johnson Museum’s fall exhibition lineup is one that will capture the attention of science buffs and art lovers alike — “From the Darkness of the Sea: the Cornell Collection of Blaschka Glass Invertebrate Models.” This exhibit, which opened September 2 and will close on December 24, features 19th century jeweler and glassmaker Leopold Blaschka’s intricately designed blown glass models of aquatic invertebrates, which he based on naturalist Philip Henry Gosse’s encyclopedia drawings.

In 1882, Cornell was able to acquire nearly 600 of Blaschka’s glass sea creatures to use in marine biology courses. Eventually, the collection was sent to the Corning Museum of Glass in order to preserve and conserve the delicate pieces. Now, Blaschka’s impeccable models are making a second appearance at Cornell with “From the Darkness of the Sea,” but this time, they’re being displayed alongside original sketches by Blaschka (on loan from Corning) and video of some of the wild oceanic creatures the 19th century glassmaker was

Lines of Inquiry The last (but definitely not least) exhibit to open this fall at the Johnson Museum is one that will surely tickle the fancies of classical art lovers. On September 23, the museum will debut a collection of the 17th century artistic legend Rembrandt’s etchings. The exhibit, which features works from the collections of universities and private collectors, will highlight Rembrandt’s mastery of the art of etching, while also bringing to light new research that explore what it meant to be a printmaker during Rembrandt’s time.

“Lines of Inquiry” will be accompanied by a number of events over the course of the fall semester, including “Paper and Glass: A Celebration of Artistic Process.” On October 13, the general public will be welcome to “Going Dutch: A Rembrandt Soirée,” a free celebration of Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age. On October 29, a daylong symposium on the work of Rembrandt will be held at the museum.

The Trip to Spain joins Michael Winterbottom’s series

that really began with Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story (2005): casual but odd mixtures of narrative and documentary technique. Are they just post-modern versions of the Hope and Crosby Road movies?

series, or maybe Richard Linklater’s Midnight trilogy?

At this point, the format is well-established: the comedians hit the road — and several prominent eateries — as the strangeness of their lives in show business seem even more illusory than it might if they were back home. The gag is that neither men are particular foodies: They’re much more interested in one-upping each other with comic riffs, or just nattering about their careers.

The formula works, and so The Trip to Spain, the third film in the series, is not like a box of chocolates. Once Coogan convinces Brydon to go on an excursion through Cantabria, the Basque region, Aragon, Rioja, Castile La Mancha and Andalu-

cia, retracing the journey Coogan took as a young man “just out of A levels”, you know exactly what you’re going to get.

Nine minutes into the film, we’re sitting with Coogan and Brydon at Txoko, located in a beautiful fishing village. Over plates of just-caught anchovies grilled over an open wood fire, they fire up their Mick Jagger impressions as readily as their dueling Michael Caine gags in The Trip to Italy. In a way, the comics’ ear for voices reminded me of SCTV, in that they do much more obscure deep-pockets impressions. Every hack impressionist does Jack Nicholson, but when was the last time you heard someone do dead-on sendups of John Hurt and Michael Hordern?

Like its predecessors, The Trip to Spain originated as a multi-episode television series and has been edited down to feature length. I’ve always wanted to see the longer versions, which my good friend Jamie Lewis much prefers: “A far superior experience.

Six half hours, each at a different location. It was hilarious and painful.”

Winterbottom is prolific; he makes a lot of films, he travels and shoots light and gets a lot of atmosphere into his films. He’s the closest Brit working today that I would compare to Linklater and Woody Allen. He achieves an odd tourist look here that absolutely fits the scenario. Every shot is beautifully framed, but framed the way a tourist would frame it. Even the quick cutaways to the kitchen crew preparing the meals feel as if they were documented by outsiders.

He’s not trying to make the food look better than it is.

In fact, you can see him working with Coogan and Brydon to vary the recipe of the series, as it were. Here, the pair invites a passing street musician to join them for a drink, but in “true” fashion, the thinskinned and easily offended Coogan gets snippy and leaves.

There’s also a Cervantes vibe running as a theme throughout the piece; at one point, they find themselves in the same part of Spain where Terry Gilliam’s Don Quixote film collapsed after only a few days of shooting (documented in the film Lost in La Mancha); the connection is made explicit when it is determined that Coogan and Brydon should dress up as Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, find a windmill and stage a photo shoot.

Gene Siskel used to say in bad reviews he’d rather see a film of the actors having lunch, that that would be more interesting and now, here’s three of them. Get Winterbottom together with Coogan and Brydon in a few years, and see what happens. •

speaking for the black community. Much of the book is told through protagonist Elma, a young white woman who is the daughter of an infamous sharecropper in town. At times, Elma attempts to break out of the white, patriarchal world she finds herself in, only to fall right back into it. Elma willingly accepts she will never be a working woman much faster than she would have accepted never being a mother. She sympathizes with her white father, even as he commits heinous and violent acts toward the African-Amer-

icans in her family. She sides with Jim Crow throughout the book, not because she understands what siding with Crow means, but because she is fairly incapable of understanding a more complex narrative.

The Twelve-Mile Straight, although shouldering complicated themes in history, is a timeless novel. As tensions in the nation seem as though they’re beginning to boil, Henderson reminds readers nothing is beginning to cook — ancient, consistent problems are as pertinent as ever and always have been.

“When I began writing it I thought — as every writer does — do we need another book about Jim Crow and race relations?” she said. “And then it seems

to be very obvious that we need as many books about race relations as possible.

Of course many people would say white people are just waking up to the realities many people of color have been facing, but for me it feels like a different moment.”

This different moment is punctuated with a Sylvia Plath quote Henderson thought of while writing the book: “Every woman adores a fascist.” Women in The Twelve-Mile Straight are complicit and cling to vile men — in hopes they further their own narrative and polish their stories.

Henderson’s novel haunts readers with complicity: with your complicity, and with the complicity that’s been consistent for generations.

rt in its rawest form comes to life during Watermusic and Dancing on the Trail. Hosted by the Triphammer Arts Inc. with the help of the Community Arts Partnership Grant and the Community Celebrations Grant, live musicians will be performing anything from jazz to folk to jivy beats along the Cayuga Waterfront Trail. Among some of the featured trail members include the Diana Leigh Trio, Hilltoppers Bluegrass

and the Zionology String Quartet.

Triphammer Arts Inc., in conjunction with local talent, also incorporates dancing into the trail — outdoor, contemporary dancing on the grass. Dancers will follow the groove of the live music, with the majority of the choreography improvised — which is what makes the art at Watermusic and Dancing Trail so raw.

Choreographer Jeanne Goddard incorporates elements of musical scores and the spontaneity of play into the routines. She’s working with seasoned dancers — some have danced on Broadway and many are classically trained — riffing off of their experiences on stage to translate their skills outside.

“I love doing set choreography, and I do think you still need that connection between choreography even when you are improvising,” Goddard said. “I think there’s much more and something much deeper to feeling and sensing others in the space you’re in. When you get in a group, there’s a shared sense of community.”

Steven Stull, a co-producer of the production, said this performance is lessfocused on tricks and more focused on feeling — something that’s more difficult to achieve on stage as opposed to on the grass.

“One of the things about outdoor dance is that you don’t do super intricate footwork because of the surface,” Stull said. “So it’s more about specific qualities, shapes and intentions.”

Now in its second year, dancers will flow to the breeze of the weeping willows above them and work with their surroundings to create moving, visual art.

“You sort of come into our little enclave for a while,” Goddard said. “And you listen and you watch in that spot for a little while, and then you sort of take off on your trek to find you next spot.” •

But Sam’s not ready to give up the ghost; as a spirit presence, he pursues his murderer and tries to protect Molly until all is set right.

San Diego-based Brotebeck has a dream team of MGR veteran designers and conductor Jeff Theiss (who turns soon to Broadway for The Band’s Visit). His production happily avoids the visual frenzy of the 2012 New York version: Czerton Lim’s set captures the mood of the film via a spacious

two-level loft space with arched windows and a brilliant backdrop of skyscraper tops converging, as if seen from street level.

Lit superbly by Dan Ozminkowski, the stage lets us see dramatic action frontally and simultaneously from another perspective, looking upward. The result quietly echoes the two planes of reality merging here: quotidian human life and ghostly limbo.

I’d wondered how all the cinematic otherworldly effects could be conveyed onstage, but thanks to the expressive lighting and Kevin Heard’s sound design, nothing is lost. When Sam (who’s in spectral form for most of the show) learns to swipe through solids, or with great concentration, move objects and even fight, Heard’s sound backs up his passes.

And remember those ghastly wraiths that carry off the evildoers as they die?

They’re just as creepy as ever; spidery black figures who rope and slide their victims into hell. Kudos to Tiffany Howard’s costumes. (Everyone else is in more contemporary garb, a nice updating of the story.)

And there’s a terrific ensemble cast — largely new to the MGR — to deliver the tale: love lost but ardently affirmed after death (which I always found rather a downer). As Sam and Molly, Derek Carley and Sarah Ellis are in fine voice; visually though, they don’t evoke the substance — the meatiness — of intense actors like Swayze and Moore.

Their chemistry becomes more convincing in the second act, where the love duet is truly poignant. (You won’t remain dry-eyed when “Unchained Melody” comes around.)

One small script fault is that Sam dies before we have a chance to know and care about the domesticating couple, but here that comes afterward. Brotebeck plunges the excellently staged action forward at a brisk pace. There’s terrific movement by choreographer Robin Levine, supported by fight guide Ceasar F. Barajas (aka Willie Lopez, the Puerto Rican hit man).

Impressive dance occurs, but the lively urban street traffic captures us the most.

The irascible subway ghost from whom Sam learns how to physically interact in the embodied world is now a fierce young black man (a fine Adriana Baidoo) with some sleek hip-hop styling; his fight with Sam is a high point. Barajas is an effectively shady Lopez (and here the musical is less racially slanted than the film). Elizabeth Ritacco nails the naïve widow seeking solace from the nether world. And throughout, notably as a hospital ghost and banker, a compelling Eric John Mahlum has distinct presence and high energy.

by Ben Maters, who looks uncannily like the film’s actor. And the comic role that leavens the entire downbeat story, the fake spiritualist originally defined by Whoopi Goldberg, is absolutely satisfying. Allyson Kaye Daniel delivers the feisty Oda Mae Brown, whom Sam appeals to for help in communicating with Molly.

Oda Mae is a fraud, a swindler with a long police record, but through Sam’s persistence she ends up not only aiding him but discovering her actual psychic gifts.

In her clairvoyant con, she’s assisted by two women (delightfully played by Aurelia Michael and Denielle Marie Gray); all three have some memorable Motown moves.

And Daniel’s Oda Mae, in a brief fantasy of staggering wealth, delivers a fabulous “I’m Outta Here.”

onor Oberst is coming through Ithaca Tuesday, Sept. 12, touring on the release of his latest album Salutations. An expanded version of his last album, Ruminations, his latest is a departure from the one recorded in a 48-hour period last year; its compositions featuring only Oberst’s voice, acoustic guitar, piano and harmonica. This album, more orchestrated and fleshed out with full band accompaniment, attempts a new take on the sounds and isolation of the Omaha winter the original was recorded during, an album whose songs conjure the raw, lonely emotional spaces where these songs originated for him.

This atmosphere allows the listener to connect with his words in an intimate way.
