he lack of mental health services at the Tompkins County Jail has been an ongoing issue for years, draining the jail’s resources while leaving inmates with an extremely limited level of care, but now for the first time steps are being taken to implement mental health programs within the jail.

“It shouldn’t be shock that the state has been closing mental health facilities and what happens is those people with mental illness have nowhere to get treatment and end up in jail,” Captain Ray Bunce, the jail’s head administrator, said in an interview last week. He had said as much to concerned county residents at a family forum hosted by the County Mental Health Department last winter, and through that conversation he connected with the Mental Health Association in Tompkins County.

The local nonprofit (which is not affiliated with the County Mental Health Department) now facilitates two new weekly group sessions at the Tompkins County Jail called WRAP and Talk. About three to four men and the same number of women meet separately in back-to-back sessions, which is the ideal number of participants, said Parker Carver, though he would like to see the frequency of the classes increase.

The sessions are not technically “group therapy,” as they are not led by licensed therapists but by Mental Health Association employees who have undergone an intensive one-week training.

WRAP, which stands for Wellness Recovery Action Plan, is an evidence-based program that teaches coping mechanisms and strategies for handling emotions. “We talk about our triggers — things that upset us and make it harder to control our emotions,” said Parker Carver. The program has been in use in the behavioral unit of Cayuga Medical Center for two years and has been used around the country.

Maguire Men’s Correctional Facility in Redwood City, CA, tracked the recidivism rates of its offenders and found that six out of seven participants that attended WRAP workshops have not reoffended in the last three years.

To accompany WRAP, which is designed to help those with mental illness, Parker Carver adapted the methods and created the less structured Talk, which is geared toward inmates who do not necessarily identify as having a diagnosed mental health issue.

Ideally, the skills taught in the program will translate to the inmate’s lives outside the jail and reduce the likelihood of their return. “If we can show them how to process anger and frustration through healthier outlets before they lean on negative coping mechanisms then we’ve done our job,” Parker Carver said.

The Mental Health Association has been asking inmates for feedback, and so far the majority have said they feel like they are benefiting from the sessions. The classes fill up rapidly. “I would love to see more sessions,” said Parker Carver. Bunce said ideally he would like to see more as well, but in the overcrowded jail it’s already a challenge trying to shuffle around appointments with attorneys and other meetings so that the conference room can be available two afternoons every week. “I can tell you, we already have demand for all the space we have,” he said.

Rachel Webb, a mental health social worker, is assigned to work in the jail six hours per week, but Bunce would like to see someone in that position full-time.

This is not unheard of or even uncommon, he said; Cortland County Jail, for example, currently has a 40-hour-per-week mental health professional on staff.

Webb does not prescribe medication, but if she thinks there is inmate who needs a prescription she will consult a psychiatrist at the County Mental Health Department who will then consult with a doctor contracted to work in the jail six hours per week (who is also on call in the case of emergency). If they concur on a course of treatment then the appropriate drug is prescribed.

The nurse, Evelyn works 40 hours per week and preferred not to give her last name. “This is obviously a population with

significant mental health needs,” Evelyn said. “There is very high percentage of people with mental illnesses here, and I don’t feel like with the lack of counseling services and therapy services that we are addressing their needs as well as we could be.”

Bunce continues to look for opportunities to improve mental health care at the jail. Recently he sent three sergeants, three officers and Evelyn, the nurse, to two days of training called “Mental Health First Aid,” held at the Mental Health Association in Ithaca.

“There’s much less anxiety among the inmates when they get to talk to someone who is actually emphasizing with their problems,” said Tompkins County Sargent Matthew DeMatteo. “Starting them earlier is beneficial because they’re not walking out the door not knowing what to do. They’re starting the process in jail, so they’ve built those avenues and know that they can pursue other resources.”

Parker Carver said inmates have already shared with him the impact the program has had over the last two month.

One man in his early 20’s had a complicated home life and has been in the system in one way or another since he was 14, spending only one year total on the outside. He has a young son, and he said that through the conversations he’s had with the group he’s come to realize how much of an effect his absent father had on him.

“It led in part to the path he chose,” Parker Carver said. “His father was also in jail or prison as long as he can remember, and it mattered to him that he break that cycle. He cried telling me how he wanted to be there for his son and wanted him to see his father in something other than an orange jumpsuit.”

wo different philosophies on individual justice in Tompkins County’s courts were on display at the first and only debate in the race for Tompkins County District Attorney, held last week at Ithaca Town Hall.

The debate, a joint venture between the Ithaca Journal and Ithaca Voice, served as climax to an intriguing race for district attorney this year in which Matthew Van Houten, a democrat, won the nomination of the democrats over the summer following the departure of former D.A. Gwen Wilkinson in July over Edward Kopko, who is now running on the independent line after failing to win the nomination of the democrats. He later sued the party on the decision, though the lawsuit was later dismissed. He, a member of the Tompkins County Democratic Committee which made the nomination separate from the public, later defended his actions, saying his intention was to pursue the interest of the voters and not a single overwhelming party should have such an influence on the ticket. An appeal against the state supreme court is still pending, he said.

Gambling on Sales Taxes

s the Tompkins County legislature finished the most laborious step of the budget process last week, legislators have produced a tentative budget that does not differ greatly from that of years past.

To close a partial gap in the budget, however, an increase in next year’s projected sales tax revenue was proposed after months of statewide decline.

The tentative budget increases the tax levy by 2.93 percent, which translates to about $15 for a median-value Tompkins home.

The steady increase of the tax levy comes as a result of a continuously declining sales tax revenue in the county for five of the last six quarters. The unpredictable nature of the sales tax makes it difficult for the legislature to accurately predict its income for the year, but even after coming off of 2015 when sales tax revenues dropped for 31 out of 57 counties statewide, according to the New York State Comptroller’s office, the county made a decision to increase its projected sales tax revenue by six figures.

In a news release sent out by the county at the start of budget season, Mareane noted that even with the anticipation of modest growth returning next year, the 2017 budgeted sales tax estimate is down by $694,000 from the 2016 budget.

Legislators voted 9-5 to reevaluate county administrator Joe Mareane’s projected sales tax revenue as a way to add $100,000 to the budget and functionally decrease the tax levy by .3 percent.

Budget Committee Chairman, Jim Dennis, thinks it’s a very small risk.

“It’s a risk, for sure,” Dennis said. “but it’s $100,000, so if in fact we don’t get that increase when we start the budget for [20]17 going to [20]18 then we know we’re going to have to pay $100,000.”

Old Library Struggling to Find its Place

fter multiple rounds of material combinations, structural orientations and parking arrangements, the developers behind the Old Library redevelopment are getting close, but still struggling to f ind a winning equation for the Dewitt Park-adjacent property good enough to win over the Ithaca Landmarks Preservation Commission.

A proposal submitted earlier this year was sent back to the drawing board again to deal with several neighbor concerns raised at the commission’s most recent meeting including–beyond qualms with the building’s aesthetics– a lack of parking and the light pollution impact the building would have on the relatively dark corner of downtown.

To try and satisfy its critics in this round of critique, the architects attempted five small changes to the design: balconies and certain design materia ls have been eliminated, stepbacks and window sizes have been reduced and

Referred to as a “DWI part,” t he new count y w ide cour t would be a part of the Tompkins County Supreme Court.

According to Ray Schlather, chair of the task force, it would be similar to the Ithaca City DWI part, which covers all misdemeanor and preliminary felony DWIs. Tompkins County currently has a Felony DWI part, where all felony DWIs are presided over by a single county court judge.

The task forced didn’t shy away from acknowledging that the current court structure is flawed. In the very first paragraph of its recommendation, the task force states its case plainly: “New York State has one of the most complicated, inefficient and costly court systems of all states.”

It goes on to chronicle the history of the state court system, noting that in 1962 the State Constitution was amended with the adoption of a new

ar ticle t hat prov ided some structural overhaul but left the courts at the lowest level in the system largely untouched. “… N e w Yo r k ’s J u s t i c e Courts have continued largely unchanged for over 300 years,” the report says, “ref lecting steadfast voter and legislative commitment both to the continued existence of local courts and to the unique role they play in New York’s justice system.”

Instituting a county wide DWI court has a number of advantages, said Schlather, and the strategy is unanimously supported by the task force.

He explained that the task force learned that DWI cases are a burden on town and village courts, and that there is Th e

Last week on the campus of Ithaca College, several members of the recentlyunionized contingent faculty–and hundreds of supporters and colleagues–rallied outside a banquet held for the college’s board of trustees to make themselves heard, splicing their hour-and-a-half long rally with anecdotes of their experience and chants to maintain the energy.

Among all the chants and themes to arise on the night, one chant seemed so definitive a solution to the issue–so clear, so simplistic and so LOUD–by the end it was almost impossible not to agree the dissenting faculty deserved everything they demanded: fulfillment of simple and moral desires for health care, for a decent wage and for job security beyond the one year their contracts guarantee.

That solution was a call for the college administration to “do the right thing.”

Its common knowledge that the repetition of a simplistic argument by an overwhelming number of people makes a fact easier to accept as true. Calling for the

college to “do the right thing” makes it very clear what the college is doing wrong: it doesn’t pay its contingent faculty enough, it doesn’t give them the safety net we expect to be given to people regarded so highly in our society and, with year-long contracts, ignores the basic human need of peace of mind and security.

But is Ithaca College, which argues it pays its contingent faculty competitively to other schools in the region, willingly doing the wrong thing?

Ithaca College has its own powerful numbers too. The school boasts a faculty of nearly 800 well-educated individuals.

Out of that number, nearly 300 are parttime. While few specifics about the private college’s budget is known beyond general expenditures, we know from the college’s own reporting that for this coming fiscal year, the college described its 2.5 percent increase to its salary pool as its “smallest in a long time,” placing the blame on the acceleration of cost increases on, among other things, employer contributions to health insurance, something further stymying the college’s goal of reducing nonsalary operating expenses by $3 million over the next few years.

’m too nervous to trust polls any more, though I guess we’ll see how accurate they really are in about ten days.

But I still have faith in the Wisdom of Crowds.

The idea is that if questions are posed to a group, the most-chosen answers will reflect the benefit of many independently-deciding individuals and will be consistently better than the answers of any one member of the group. Forget fact-checking. Let the people decree what the truth is. The motto on my family crest being “it’s worth a shot”, I figure there’s no harm in trying it out.

Let’s start with a classic logic question. Dad, Mom and two kids have come to the Cayuga Inlet, and they find a small rowboat. It can carry only one adult or two children at a time. Both kids are decent rowers. How can the family reach the other side of the Inlet? a. The kids row across. Kid One comes back. Mom goes over, and Kid Two comes back. Both kids row over and Kid One comes back again.

Dad rows across, Kid Two comes back. Both kids row across again. b. Until the Inlet is dredged, they can pretty safely just walk across. c. The family says ‘screw it’ and settles on this side of the Inlet after all. d. Dad rows across, promising to ‘get some help’ and is never heard from again.

Another logic question. Let’s stipulate the following two statements to be true: A nameless college town has seven drug paraphernalia stores on its downtown pedestrian mall. One day, a new drug paraphernalia store opens on a hill in the vicinity of one of the institutions of higher learning.

What, if anything, can be deduced from these two statements? a. It’s 1974. b. Contemplating logic questions is mentally taxing and a person needs to unwind once in a while. c. These so-called “stores” are all fake, man. Every time you go in one the government takes your picture. d. This election has driven many citizens to various forms of self-medication.

More logic, you say? Here’s one with just two choices. In Ithaca, there’s a small plot of land about which the following facts are true: 1.) every day, a motley collection of people mills aimlessly about, sometimes for hours at a time, and 2.) it is the most urinated-upon real estate in Tompkins County. Based only on this information, identify the parcel in question. a. Ithaca Dog Park b. Dewitt Park, a/k/a ‘Needle Park’ Here’s a question with some moral or ethical ambiguity. I can never keep them straight. You’re on your way home from PetSmart, and are stopped at the Meadow Street traffic light. There is a panhandler immediately outside your window, smoking a cigarette and checking his or her cell phone. You should a. give him or her a small sum of money, along with a W-2 for when he or she fills out this year’s income tax returns. b. politely indicate, with a vigorous nod of your head, the gigantic “help wanted” signs in front of two of the three restaurants in the immediate vicinity. c. feign an inordinate amount of interest in the traffic light, and in all traffic control devices worldwide, by staring intently at the red light, thereby avoiding eye contact. d. keep texting.

Of the following implacable forces, which force is most implacable? a. Upward pressure on rents in Ithaca, New York. b. NIMBY people opposed wind turbines. c. How annoying the water bottle flipping craze is. d. Christmas television programming coming earlier every year.

And, finally, New York’s very own version of the Wheeleresque does-realityexist-if-not-observed problem. If federal corruption charges against several members of Governor Cuomo’s inner circle are brought in recent weeks, but nobody seems to be paying any attention, then which of the following is true? a. It never happened. b. Certain people are darn lucky the presidential election is so distracting.

part of the process would be to go out into the community and “listen,” working to open a dialogue with the community.

Alternatives to incarceration Both candidates said that while not all crimes are the same, there should be slightly different approaches to handling the administration of alternatives to incarceration. Kopko said not all crimes are created equal, saying a method of determining the risk a person would have to the community post-incarceration should be taken into account, as well as the type of crime they committed.

“There are some people that hurt us,” Kopko said. “Those people need to be separated from the rest of us. Some of us do stupid things, and you need to evaluate those cases... Crimes differ, and community differs. Shooting a gun in Lansing is different than shooting a gun on the Commons. Its how we can make Tompkins County safer and what is fair to this person and not creating a burden on the taxpayers.”

Van Houten said ATI’s were a way to address specific needs–of treatment and bettering the community–and to try and eliminate the factors that made the person commit the crime in the first place.

The topic segued into the Ithaca Plan, the city’s groundbreaking proposal to address the treatment of heroin addiction. Kopko said–while Mayor Svante Myrick’s concept of a supervised injection site was currently illegal in New York State–should be implemented slowly and they should take heed in potentially becoming a “haven for drug users,” saying the impact of the Ithaca Plan’s implementation could have detrimental effects without caution and consideration.

He stood strong on his ground of being tough on higher level drug criminals, those whose crimes are fueled by addiction, when prosecuting higher-offending drug users, while pushing those lower-level offenders into pre-existing programs in place attached to a low risk of recidivism. Van Houten echoed the noble intentions of the Ithaca Plan in averting low-level drug users into treatment, but said before any action could be taken at the judicial level was to find more ways of treating substance abuse in the county.

DWIs Neither candidate were in favor of an arbitrary blood alcohol content heavily weighing in prosecution. But special consideration over what they do–and whether or not they in their actions had presented a danger to the community– rose as the theme between both of them.

Youthful Offenders In prosecuting heinous crimes, Kopko kept his stance in putting “safety first,” and separating those who commit grievous crimes against the community. But, he said, kids who seemed to have made a mistake and prosecuting them in a decision that would follow them the rest of their life, should be given weight and discretion when deciding to prosecute.

“You’d only make a criminal,” he said. “When you prosecute someone, you need to make sure you are helping them and reforming them.”

Van Houten named the mandatory treatment given to those under 19 years of age without violent offenses as something he would work with, working to avoid leaving a permanent mark on a young person’s life.

Despite the fact that Tompkins County’s population grew to 105,000 while Chemung County’s dropped to 88,000, the allocation of judges has remained the same.

Legislator Martha Robertson (D-Dryden) asked about the opposing points of view; what might be lost if the county moved forward with the task force’s recommendations, she asked.

“The most prominent opposing argument is the status quo,” Schlather replied.

“The status quo does work, in some sense. There’s this thing called grassroots justice… the opposing view is we have 300 years of town and village justices who are elected by the people in our community, and therefore that person should be given the authority to be basically the God, if you will, of justice in that particular community.”

“And it’s a compelling argument in many respects,” Schlather continued. “I think one of the important things we’ve learned is that, particularly in this area in Tompkins County, so many people subject to that level of justice don’t come from that community; they happen to be passing through or just moved there or are renting, so it’s not as parochial as one might think.”

post-recession, a 2012 New York Times story noting that of the 4,000 or so colleges and universities in the United States, only 500 or so are operating effectively enough to stay afloat. To stay above water–to recruit the best and the brightest students in the nation and convince them their hundreds of thousands are best spent at their university–requires massive investment: flashier buildings, better dining facilities, quality athletic programs.

To make up for this cost, colleges have to cut where they can. Where they make that choice is easy: it’s in a willing and ambitious parttime workforce who care highly about their jobs.

The rise of this trend is welldocumented. In 1975, 30 percent of college faculty were part-time. By 2011, 51 percent were part-time and another 19 percent nontenure track, making 70 percent of the higher education workforce contingent faculty.

A recent paper written by Georgetown professor Jason Brennan and George Mason University policy historian Phillip Magness said financially, colleges are already doing the right thing: If every adjunct in the country were to be paid well and provided benefits and office space, the costs to universities nationwide would cost anywhere between $15 billion and $32 billion more per year across the board.

At the same time, the fiscally sound decision is, on a human level, the wrong decision. At Ithaca College, professors told stories of being on Medicaid and Foodstamps–arguably unusual public expenses for a population so uniquely skilled and educated–and of anxiety brought about by the uncertainty of their futures. They want wages equivalent to the Tompkins County living wage–a living wage higher than counties where other private New York State institutions are located.

The Economic Policy Institute–a Washington think tank with liberal viewpoints on the labor movement–found unions like the one formed at Ithaca College have the ability to raise compensation for its members by a total of 28 percent. Where you find this money is a different story.

So what does this mean? What needs to be done to make room for this pay raise?

It’s clear a reallocation of priorities for universities nationwide needs to take place, a reevaluation of how funds are raised and how they are spent needed. Scoreboards should be turned into salaries, landscape masterplans into healthcare packages.

As a nationwide movement has gained recognition and demonstrations like a recent successful strike in Pennsylvania have shown, the public is beginning to turn in favor of faculty rights. As protests rock the nation, the population backing these professors is making its case that the status quo–and the decisions perpetuating its existence–are wrong, leaving only one real option that is, empirically, the “right thing” to do: Negotiate.

A plan to clean emerson takes shape The development team behind Chainworks are looking to have a baseline to plan for the remediation of pollution on the property completed sometime in January, consultant Vickie Taylor-Brous said.

The developer is currently looking to update its data on contamination at the site and where it is most prevalent.

The approximately 8,000 page-long remedial investigation report is twothirds complete, which will then provide a road map of where development could begin soonest and where the most dire remediation is needed.

Because of the complex geology the Emerson site rests on, the decades of contamination it has introduced into the groundwater around the site will continue to be an issue requiring consistent monitoring. No specific plan to clean the site can be developed until recommendations by the DEC are received.

Brewery coming to West End A microbrewery and tasting room planned for the West End has received funding from the city and will start construction later this year.

Liquid State Brewing Company, a startup beer company looking to set up shop in the Cornell Laundry building at 527 W. State St., has received a $70,000 loan from the city, rounding out the $645,000 needed to get off the ground.

The owners themselves are an interesting duo. Jamey Tielens works as a Bioacoustic Research Support Specialist at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, farms his own hops and has experience in both balancing budgets and flavor profiles.

His counterpart, Ben Brotman, comes on as a seasoned brewmaster.

As for production, they plan to distribute 24,180 gallons of beer to cities as far as Rochester and Syracuse, with a first-year goal of $561,000 in sales.

Ithaca a jobs hot spot The City of Ithaca topped all upstate metros in job creation between September 2015 and September 2016, adding more jobs total than either Buffalo or Rochester.

With 4,300 private sector jobs created, the Ithaca metro-area reported a growth of 7 percent, topping Rochester and Buffalo’s growth rates of 0.3 percent.

Albany, Syracuse and Binghamton were all flat or lost jobs.

was a camp counselor in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s. I found it was a great way to find out what the kids are into, as they say.

The summer of 1999 it was all about Pokemon and the next summer, all the campers were lugging around these hardcover books about some kid named Harry Potter. A year later, the films started coming out, and the whole world knew about Harry Potter.

Darlynne Overbaugh, one of the creators of Wizarding Weekend–Ithaca’s now-annual overnight transformation into Hogsmeade–read the books when they first came out. A friend at school was reading it, and she thought, I guess there must be something to it if adults are reading it.

On an early day in October, Overbaugh, lover of sci-fi, fantasy and a collector of comic books since the age of eight, takes me out to the foyer of her business, Life’s So Sweet Chocolates, to talk about the upcoming event in front of a gorgeous Harry Potter-themed quilt, the spell “Expecto Patronum” written on it. It’s a beautiful piece by one of the volunteer quilters, one that took six weeks to complete.

[In the interest of full disclosure, Overbaugh and I worked together in 2002 on a children’s musical called The Refrigerator Caper at the old Kitchen Theatre in the Clinton House.]

The origin of Wizarding Weekend just might be one of the greatest magic tricks ever done. We’re used to hearing about businesses and organizations that experience the slow build, the gradual growth and momentum of a number of years. The first WW went viral, a magic mushroom.

“This was not a slow build,’ says Overbaugh, still sounding a mite dazed a year later, as if emerging from a euphoric spell of sorts. “This was fast. My inner geek is loving this event, because it is a dream

Wizarding World Opens to Muggles

Yates, who helmed several of the HP films, or the Harry Potter stage play in the works, or the soon-to-be-published rehearsal script. As Wizarding Weekend II approaches, the film is weeks from release, the Harr y Potter play is the Hamilton of London, and legions of fans now own their own copies of the script. Wizard Fever couldn’t be bigger.

But no: The original idea came from a couple fans who loved Harry Potter whether it was fashionable or not, even if there were no new Rowling projects to dish about.

Once upon a time Aiden Gayos said to his brother Gabe, “You know, Press Bay Alley [where Life’s So Sweet and several other businesses are clustered on West Green Street] reminds me of Diagon Alley from the Harry Potter book series.” That led to the thought: “Boy, wouldn’t it be fun if we did something in the Alley for Halloween?”

That was October 12, 2015. Gabe told his boss Lawrence Clarkburg, who thought was a cool idea. He and Kristina Thalen, the owner of Amuse: Modern Cottage Industry, were preparing for Wool Day, and couldn’t get involved prepping another event two weeks

Overbaugh checked the event page two days later.

like MTV and Seventeen Magazine. It just kept going, and by the time the event came together last Halloween, more than 8,000 people came, from all over the United States and Canada.”

People came from far away, willing to drive from as far away as Quebec City,

Massachusetts, even as far as North Carolina. People told her, ‘you’ve got to cancel this,’ the amount of interest in the event too great. Overbaugh said that’s the reason she had to keep pushing forward.

“I was like, ‘No way am I going to cancel this,’” Overbaugh said. “There’s too much enthusiasm, too many volunteers were coming out of the woodwork to make this happen. There are too many fans who wanted to make this happen, and whether they were volunteering or attending, that was the intention behind it.”

Besides theater, Overbaugh’s background is day care and day camp counselor. She was an arts and crafts counselor when she was a teenager, and when she was five, her mother mounted a Halloween party at her school for somewhere between 200 and 300 families. In the same paradigm, she planned the first Weekend.

The first weekend of planning was spent brainstorming ideas that could be pulled off quickly, like trivia and dueling and Wizard chess.

“We didn’t have time to find vendors,” she said. “There were a few there, but they were all local. We wanted to put the emphasis on the businesses that are here year-round, because they are themselves a magical group of people that continue to

Readying for Glory

Ithaca’s swimmers pursue an elusive sectional crown

s the Ithaca High swim team heads into the Sectional meet next week, five seniors are on a mission.

For many years, Roy Staley led the Little Red dynasty to the title, and while Horseheads has hoisted the trophy for the past three years, Annika Browning, Indie Stratton, Seldoen Oshoe, Michaele

Moravek and Kristin Reid have every intention of bringing the sectional championship trophy back home.

Mike Blakely-Armitage, Ithaca’s coach, likes the Little Red’s chances.

“We have been inching a bit closer every year,” he said. “Last year we lost by nine points. Browning was All-State in the 200 and 500 last year, and is presently in the top five in both events. Stratton, in her coach’s words, is a great sprinter who has come back from a devastating injury, someone who puts the team’s needs ahead of her own.” Oshoe is a butterfly/ breaststroke specialist looking to make states for the first time, Moravek a solid sprinter in the 50 and 100 freestyle and Reid, who coach said is a “very talented utility freestyler.”

Like any high school coach (or juggler), Blakely-Armitage has several balls in the air at any given time. In addition to focusing on the seniors’ quest to fulfill a long-held dream, he must also work with the younger swimmers to try to foster their maturity and leadership.

“One of my challenges as their coach is to try to get their emotional maturity to catch up to their athletic ability,” said Blakely-Armitage.

Blakely-Armitage said there’s a misleading misconception swimming is a sport for individuals, that there’s little more to it than the swimmer beating those in the lane beside them “People don’t see swimming as a team sport,” he said. “Given there is no contact with the opponent. But there is a lot of the chemistry involved.”

I jokingly said, “So you are tasked with a double-major in chemistry.” Mike liked that. “That’s true… we need to make sure the physical environment of the pool and the team chemistry are both in balance.”

Chicago makes history As I watched the game-ending double play on Saturday night, I heard the words I have never heard in my 50plus years as a baseball fan: “The Cubs are going to the World Series!”

I was pleased to chat with Dave Winfield, Joe Carter and Deion Sanders as they were waiting their turn to take batting practice, and as much as I enjoyed my long talk with Johnny Bench, I was star-struck when I turned around and saw Ernie Banks standing there.

Banks was one of the greatest players ever to play the game, and he spent his entire Major League career with the hapless Cubs, maintaining his infectious positive attitude and earning the nickname “Mr. Sunshine.” He played from 1953 (8 years after the Cubs’ last World Series appearance) until 1971 (45 years before their next appearance).

Ernie was an ambassador of sorts throughout his retirement, and when I saw that he was more than willing to engage a small-town, small-time reporter in conversation, it crossed my mind to ask him if he thought the Cubs would ever play in the World Series in his lifetime.

I thought better of it, realizing he had likely been asked that question a thousand times. Instead, I said, “Mr. Banks, I know you love the grand game and its history, and I’d like to invite you to visit me in Ithaca. If you do so, I will take you to Cornell and show you where Lou Gehrig–as a player on Columbia’s roster–hit a 500-foot home run against the Big Red in 1923.”

Ernie’s eyes bugged out, and he said.

“Lou Gehrig played in the Ivy League?

Are you kiddin’ me, young man? I’m comin’ to see you! Yes sir, I’m comin’ to see you!”

Ernie Banks passed on last year. He never made it to Ithaca, but his Cubs made in to the World Series. I wish I could have been two-for-two in seeing those things, but somewhere Ernie is smiling.

A

split second of silence brings a halt to a sweeping crescendo, a groom waiting at the altar. Then the music kicks back in, the bride beginning the long walk down the aisle and up the stairs as the lede to the next chapter of their lives.

It’s a magical moment no matter how many times you witness it, a moment that fully encapsulates a palpable and tangible definition of love, life and happiness. What it’s not is spontaneous; it’s eye meets eye, the first/second/ third dates go well, and a romance is tested to a point where its resilience is of no question. And also, the perfectlycoordinated cue of the band, courtesy of a finely-tuned Excel spreadsheet.

These magical moments are distilled by wedding planners, a subset of the event-planning population whose job is to not only bring together an often extravagant affair celebrating eternal union, but to make sure it retains its

magic for each and every person who gets sent an invitation. That only results through meticulous planning and the consideration of every last thing at play in the ceremony.

It’s an art the Jennifer Lawrence Birnbaum, a music teacher and choral director, and Barbara Behrmann, a sociology PhD and humanist celebrant, have managed to master over their six years of wedding planning experience, managing elaborate ceremonies from locals and out-of-towners alike.

To build their blueprint of a good time, they spend hours with the bride and groom, mapping out precisely how every second of the day will play out. This results in 10 or 12 spreadsheets of templates that serve as the basis of their line of questioning, from who gets what flowers to why Aunt Peggy and Uncle Hank can’t sit in the same corner of the room anymore. Those spreadsheets turn into specific timelines of how the

event will unfold and what each player in the ceremony–from the catering to the transportation–should be doing and when.

“The more into account the couple takes their guests– their families, everything people bring to the experience– and thinks about their needs, the more happy people are going to be while they’re there,” Behrmann said.

“And not walk out as soon as the cake is cut,” Lawrence Birnbaum adds.

It’s a pre-programmed notion in modern society that of all events one can plan, a wedding tends to be one of the hardest. Instead of an ice sculpture in June, go for a more subtle table setting. Want to add some color? Go with the all-white décor with a few splashes of vibrance, instead of a lavish display.

istorically, June has been the most popular month for getting married. But some numbers now indicate that July and even October have begun to edge out June as the most popular months to tie the knot.

The June wedding tradition may be traced back to the ancient Romans. Romans honored Juno, the goddess of marriage and childbirth, and the month of June was named after her, so it is fitting that weddings take place in her namesake month. As centuries passed, June remained a popular month to get married. June was a prime time for people to come out after a long winter and take communal baths in the fifteenth century. In addition, June weddings meant children conceived after betrothal would be born close to or during the following spring. This helped assure youngsters’ survival during the rough and often lean months of winter.

Spring births would not conflict with workers’ demanding schedules during the autumn harvest, either. Even when weddings began shifting from pragmatic business transactions to romantic affairs, June remained popular.

Inspiration boards bring wedding plans to life

M

aking the wedding of your dreams a reality may require some creativity. It can be challenging to organize all of the creative ideas swimming around in your head, but inspiration boards may be able to help.

Inspiration boards, sometimes referred to as idea boards, are commonly used by interior designers, artists, writers, and even wedding planners. Such boards can serve a great purpose when starting a new project, especially if all of your creative ideas seem to lack cohesion. Sometimes seeing things together, rather than in bits and pieces on their own, can fuel even more creativity.

Later, when photographers, florists and other vendors have been booked, you can attach receipts or agreements to the inspiration board for future reference. This keeps all of your important wedding information in one place rather than requiring you to search through different folders or files for important documents. To start building your own board or book, take clippings of photos or articles that resonate with you. As you visit bridal shops and other stores, take fabric swatches and pictures of particular looks. Attend bridal shows and take home promotional materials.

Florists with significant wedding experience will no doubt make a host of recommendations based on couples’ budgets and preferences, so couples might be more inclined to listen to that advice if they are working with someone they trust. Ask relatives, friends or coworkers if they can recommend any florists whose wedding work they are familiar with.

Silence Henry Rollins at the State

H

enry Rollins the actor, writer, former musician, and spoken word artist is sharp when he answers interview questions for his upcoming spoken word performance at the State Theater.

He’s deft with his replies over the Internet. It seems he has the same verve at his 55 years of age as when he first played in the early 1980’s with the group State of Alert. During that era, Rollins funded a single EP when he was a manager at a Haagen-Dazs ice cream shop. Shortly after that the band disbanded, and Rollins began to listen to the punk group Black Flag. Eventually Rollins was invited to join the band as a vocalist. After just five years with the popular group, Rollins released his first spoken word album and soon after, left Black Flag. He formed his own group called the Rollins Band, and with more vigor he released another spoken record in the same year.

But with a certain weariness of singing the same songs, Rollins ended his music playing days and sought to act, write and maintain his activism. Rollins has been a columnist for LA Weekly, a radio personality on KCRW and even a TV host, with various roles on the History Channel, IFC and National Geographic.

For nearly 40 years Rollins has travelled and sought new paths. His next move will be an 80 city spoken word tour in North America, reflecting his insights on his wide travels and share his spoken word commentary on the recent nature of politics with a touch of Rollins humor for his audiences.

“The world is a more interesting place than ever and I am glad to be out in it,” Rollins said.

“I’m looking forward to all these shows.”

In this interview Rollins covers the changing face of activism, Black Lives Matter, and what advice he would give the younger Henry Rollins.

Ithaca Times: You’ve been writing and crafting your spoken words since 1986 with your first release. What first influenced you to move in this direction?

Henry Rollins: The first talking show I ever did was in 1983. It was ten minutes, one of several people who got the same amount of time. I remember distinctly that it felt right

immediately, even though it was only a brief period of time. It started as an offer from a local promoter. Otherwise, I don’t know if I would have found the medium. What I liked about it was the freedom allowed by not having to stick to a lyric or the structure of a song. That was it pretty much. I had a lot of “material” as the things I was experiencing on the road were the perfect stuff for stories.

IT: How do you think you have improved your spoken work over time?

HR: If I may be so bold to think that I have improved, it would be that I am able to get to the point much quicker. I am able to walk onstage with the entire show in my head and have things go together in a way that makes sense. This might be through decades of doing it but I do think I have better aim. As the years went by, I learned more about using language with more precision and that as any lawyer will tell you, words matter.

You are being listened to, so you better have it as together as you possibly can.

IT: Can you say how you get ready for a show?

HR: Show prep starts in the gym, where I usually am by 1300 hrs. I start running through the ideas I will put across that night. About an hour before I go on, I run through the ideas as I pace back and forth. I recite Lincoln, usually parts of his speech from Jan 27, 1838. I do this to clear my head of any extraneous thoughts. Works pretty well. Since I don’t take out any water onstage, I prehydrate. When it’s time to go, I wait on the side of the stage for the lights to go on, I hit my stopwatch and walk out there.

IT: Your tour will touch on the politics of the upcoming national election, and current events, but can you say what humor you will share in your spoken word performance?

HR: My shows always have a lot of humor as a fair part of the time, life plus time equals humor. Not always but it happens. This tour has some funny stories I rotate in and out of the shows. I do have some fun stories about David Bowie and Lemmy that I have been telling. They have been on my mind a lot as they passed away months ago.

involvement by people who care, such as Black Lives Matter to people working on fair housing needs, but can you describe what your activism means to you? And do you see changes coming soon? (In what way?)

HR: I describe my activism as never, ever shutting up about what I see as wrong. I describe it as being as careful as I can to try to see the issue for what it is, not how a “white person” would see it. For instance, those who respond to BLM activists with “but all lives matter” are completely missing the point, perhaps even willfully. Activism is much, much more than just being for or against something, you have to try to get to why something like BLM starts in the first place, that’s the only way things have a chance of changing.

I don’t think USA is interested in changing.

USA has had myriad chances to achieve equality since 1865. History proves that USA just isn’t all that interested. In 1868, the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified, giving all people born or naturalized in USA not only citizenship but equal protection under the law. Not to have a good thing come to an end, USA started Jim Crow laws. Perhaps some of longest lasting and ruinous things ever done by one USA’er to another. President Obama tried to change things. He got the tea party. Young people better figure it out.

IT: What advice would you give the younger you?

HR: Probably not to be so defensive, self involved, be a better listener, more patient— things like that. Easy to look back and admonish but at the time, anything I did seemed like the right thing to do. That’s how it is now. Do what you do, cringe later. It’s regret on the layaway plan.

IT: You enjoy being “out in the world,” and been to many places such as Siberia and Bangladesh, but is there a place you still would like to see, but have not yet? And why?

HR: I want to get into the more central regions of Africa. Chad, Congo, Cameroon, Niger. I have never been to New Guinea, really want to check that out. I would like to get into more of the interior of Vietnam. Go in through Da Nang, proceed west and then go south down to Saigon. I really want to get back to Antarctica as soon as I can. Back to Mongolia and travel out of Ulaanbaatar and see what’s out there. More time on the Amazon. The reason I have not been to all the places I listed, or been back to the others is due to schedule, seasonal weather considerations and things like that.

Whenever I have more than three weeks when I am not tied to a location, I often take my work and do it somewhere else. I have edited books on the Trans-Siberian railroad, Islamabad, wherever. I would rather be out in the world than in my house any time.

IT: What are you reading of late?

HR: Last book read was Thomas Dolby’s autobiography. He wanted me to write a blurb for it. Very good read. Sharp guy. I don’t read nearly as much as I used to. Spend more time writing and thinking than reading. I need to work on that.

IT: Would you like to say anything more about your upcoming performance?

HR: I give every show all I have. •

A Romp With a Big Heart

Precious Nonsense delivers in all the right spots

t’s 1938. The long touring Carter Family Savoyards are running low on steam, the grandiloquent patriarch RDC Carter (Eric Brooks) and his soignée wife Angelina (Lydia Gaston) wish to leave the boards, but their somewhat dim tenor son Frederic (Coleman Hemsath) plans to jump ship first, which leaves the other members of the company—ditzy soprano ingenue Josephine (Jillian Gottlieb), stage manager Pete (Patrick Halley) and music director/accompanist Herbie (Thomas Conroy) facing unemployment.

Suddenly they are forced to scrap their revue format and put on Pirates of Penzance, as the owner of the theater has billed that show. RDC quickly ropes in Pete, the owner’s stagestruck son Samuel (Weston Allen Kemp) and Josephine’s mysterious friend Mack (Emily Jackson.)

Act Two is one of the zaniest Pirates every imagined, with frequent cross-dressing,

sudden changes in who is playing what, over-the-top acting and gloriously sung G&S. Above all, Precious Nonsense is friendly. Sara Lampert Hoover, who directed the original production about a decade ago, returns and delivers a beautifully paced and stylized show.

But it’s Rachel Lampert’s effervescent bagatelle that marries two backstage story staples: the romance and a “show must go on” farce to the tunes of Arthur Sullivan, with the traditional lyrics of W.S. Gilbert alternating with new lyrics by Lampert.

The conflicts are fairly small; Act One is driven more by meta-theatrical takes on the unfolding plot (plus two secret loves) as the Act Two farce is set in place.

Brooks, returning to the role he created, is precision and largesse, a perfect example of the old-style actor-manager.

His “Modern Major General” is superb.

Gaston partners him with aplomb, a strong touch of wryness and a smoky alto.

She mixes elegance with pluck.

Halloween Treats

The time of year for scares and horror

ttentive readers will note that all of my October columns have been about spooky stuff in honor of my favorite holiday, Halloween. We’ll wrap up the month with some of my favorite tricky treats on home video.

With the current HBO series and Antoine Fuqua’s remake of The Magnificent Seven still in theaters, it’s a great time to check out Westworld, Michael Crichton’s 1973 directorial debut.

A dry run for Jurassic Park, Westworld is set in an amusement park entirely populated by robotic characters.

James Brolin and Richard Benjamin play two overgrown boys struggling with adulthood who come to the park for some cowboy escapism. Instead they run up against Yul Brynner as the nearly mute Gunslinger, a badass who shoots first and asks no questions.

Nine years before the Terminator, Brynner as the Gunslinger was the stateof-art unstoppable killer. When I saw it on HBO as a kid, I had no idea that Brynner’s 18

costume and character were a direct homage to his performance as gunman Chris Adams in the “original” Magnificent Seven, but once you know, it’s a great wink in the context of a seminal ‘70s sci-fi classic. (“Star Trek” fans will also appreciate Majel Barrett’s cameo as the madam of the robot brothel.)

Among all the pop culture references in Netflix’s “Stranger Things”, there’s a brief insert of one of those yellow ‘70s smiley faces, which certainly reminded me of Joe Dante’s satirical werewolf horror comedy The Howling (1980). Dee WallaceStone plays a TV news reporter on the trail of a vicious serial killer (Robert Picardo, in the first of many roles in Dante’s films) who stumbles upon a new-age coven of werewolves struggling with their condition.

The cast includes Dennis Dugan, now a film director for Adam Sandler, and genre favorites Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and the peerless Dick Miller as an occult book store owner

bumbling “offstage”, full matinee idol “onstage.” He phrases Frederick’s ballads with a piercing tenderness. Jackson is a nifty, Cagney-esque male covering a quivering, gushing heart, and manages all her switches in persona with panache.

Kemp deftly strings puppy-dog eagerness, unrequited longing, and starry-eyed naivete into a winning portrayal of the unfortunate Samuel, while Conroy (who doubles as the actual music director & accompanist) affects a drawling Will Rogers commentary.

There’s not a wrong note in the lot.

Even so, an extra brightness explodes from Halley (particularly as the Pirate King) and Gottlieb.

Pete (memorably originated by Joey Steinhagen) is the show’s comic center, as he moves from also-ran to star, near frozen with fear as the lights come up on Pirates, then losing himself in outlandish bouts of acting. Halley plays it with deep investment in Pete’s normality against an increasingly zealous inhabitant of a purely theatrical realm. Absolutely precision physical comedy.

Gottlieb, who possesses an astonishing soprano, galvanizes the show from her entrance. She whips through her dizzy lines with the rat-a-tat of oldtime Broadway and screwball comedies, a seemingly guileless bubble-head who in reality has people smarts, with not a small touch of Billie Dawn from Born Yesterday.

She can bulldoze her way with a flick of her eyelashes, a cat licking cream.

The whole performance is adorably who’ll believe anybody as long as the check clears. Rob Bottin created groundbreaking transformation effects for the film, having apprenticed with makeup maestro Rick Baker for the other great modern lycanthrope flick…

John Landis made his reputation as a comedy director with The Kentucky Fried Movie, Animal House and The Blues Brothers. And while An American Werewolf in London (1981) has scenes and moments of extremely funny stuff, it is not a comedy: It’s all about these two college boys played by David Naughton (best known at the time for a series of musical Dr. Pepper commercials) and Griffin Dunne who–against the advice of suspicious English villagers–don’t stick to the roads, don’t stay clear of the moors and of course, gets attacked by a werewolf.

Dunne is eviscerated, and keeps reappearing throughout the film, rotting away, urging Naughton to kill himself and sever the wolf’s “bloodline.”

If anything, Landis’s film is as reverential and structured as the very best Wolfman movies made at Universal Pictures in the 1940s. So many horror comedies are neither funny nor scary, but this is one of the very few horror comedies that are both terrifying and hilarious in equal measure. The juxtaposition of Dunne in various stages of decomposition yet still acting like a goofy frat boy epitomizes the film’s strange blend of tones. In its best moments, you don’t know whether to laugh or dive under your chair.

Scenic designer Sarah Frank provides a piquant fake proscenium with an apron stage, in pinks and greens. Eric Herskowitz gives it a romantic gloss with his lights. Lisa Boquist has huge fun in the costuming, with delightful ‘30s period dress superseded by tacky yet theatrically astute Penzance costumes, including a Louis XIV Pirate that is comedy in itself.

The play is friendly in its generosity to the audience. Its parody winks yet doesn’t scold and it approaches the music with honesty. Precious Nonsense is a romp with a big heart. •

Rick Baker first worked with Landis on Landis’ debut feature Schlock (1973).

Landis wrote American Werewolf in 1969 while working as a go-fer on Kelly’s Heroes, so Baker had the script, and several years to figure how to do what Landis wanted, a transformation in harsh light in real time, with none of the dissolves and studio tricks used in other wolf movies.

Bottin beat him to the punch getting some of those ideas into The Howling, but for my money, no one’s come close to topping Baker’s work from three-dozen years ago. •

Free and Extravagant

NYS Baroque presents an obscure kind of concert

YS Baroque, our early music group well known for variety in programming, takes us this time on a new adventure, something very different from the usual offerings.

Their entirely instrumental concert called Fantasticus, at 7:30 p.m. on October 29 at Ithaca’s Unitarian Church, presents string music of the 17th century by mainly unfamiliar composers and in an obscure style. The preconcert talk is at 6:45.

The Fantastic Style is so-named by influential German theorist Athanasius Kircher, who described it as a free and unrestrained method of composing, without strict rules, designed to display genius, and especially suited to instruments. Lute specialist and NYS Baroque artistic director Deborah Fox explains that it grew out of 17th-century Italian music and was disseminated throughout Europe. She calls it improvisational, freeform, “a little extravagant.” Much of the ornamentation is written out, and often the instruments take turns with little fancy solos and then fit back into the ensemble. The composers

took into account the different sound qualities of individual instruments, thus giving performers the chance to show off their virtuosity.

On this program the composers are mostly from the early 17th century, and only one name is familiar, that of the famed North German/Danish organist Dietrich Buxtehude, whose reputation led J. S. Bach to walk 200 miles to hear him play. His Sonata 6 in d minor is scored for violin, viola da gamba, and basso continuo—which includes theorbo (the lute with the tall neck, Fox’s instrument) and harpsichord.

Buxtehude’s Praeludium in g minor for harpsichord solo has improvisation written down for the performer. Also we might remember Johann Heinrich Schmeltzer, a chamber musician of the court in Vienna, whose appealing and programmatic “Fencing School” suite was part of last April’s concert. A Rapper’s Delight

Sammus record release show at the haunt

I

thaca-based rapper and producer Enongo Lumumba-Kasongo–known as Sammus–is a sort of brainy, cultural stylist. Initially breaking into the underground scene with clever and lucid raps about video games, comic books, and science fiction, she’s sculpted and honed her form accordingly ever since, growing into an expressionistic social MC with some big-time chops.

The rapper is a heady force live: vigorous, juxtaposing, and empowering.

Her new LP Pieces in Space drops October 28 on Don Giovanni Records.

Sammus is singular weight, an inspired individual that’s found the super-nova where feminism and fantasy flourish as one entity. I caught up recently with the Cornell University grad in anticipation of her record release show Thursday night at The Haunt.

Ithaca Times: What does it mean to be a feminist in 2016? How does it directly influence your artistic approach, and is it a defining element to that approach?

Enongo Lumumba-Kasongo: It means being a person who recognizes and cares about the unique and structural ways that a person’s position in life affects them.

And it means fighting forms of oppression that emerge at a range of identity points– race, gender, class, and sexuality, to name a few. I think I came to feminism with a mind towards achieving equity for women, but increasingly I’m recognizing how far beyond that a feminist perspective extends. For example, adopting a feminist worldview means freeing men from the constraints of forms of masculinity that don’t allow them to be emotional, thoughtful, whole humans. It frees people from believing that only certain forms of production, only certain forms of leadership are valuable to society. I would very much say this is a defining element of my approach as an artist. I don’t make music with the hope of exalting women to unreasonable heights. I make music that

IT: What was the writing and recording process like for Pieces in Space?

Was it different working with a new label, and in any way was it more difficult to make then albums in the past?

ELK: I spent roughly two years in total writing and recording for this project.

I started producing the beats and writing the rhymes towards the end of 2014, and finished writing the last song in June 2016. I wrote the songs in Ithaca and then traveled to Queens, NY to record with my sound engineer, Sosa, who also mixed and mastered each track. The rollout has certainly been different than it was when I was releasing music through the NuBlack Music Group label. In the past I would write an album, and we’d release it immediately afterwards. But with Pieces in Space, I submitted it to the label five months before we actually planned on doing anything with it so that we could be strategic about its release. If anything, working with Don Giovanni Records has made things much easier, because I’ve had the freedom to focus more on the music: It’s not just me and my manager sending out emails to publications anymore. I also have access to resources I’ve never had–for the first time in my life I have an album on vinyl! • Read the whole interview at Ithaca.com

Cornell Plantations 2016 fall letcure series

he well-attended Cornell Plantations 2016 fall lecture series–free and open to the public–has recently invited a variety of excellent speakers covering the necessity of protecting the world’s biological and cultural assets, showing us just how wonderfully diverse our planet truly is.

A few weeks ago on October 14, Wade Davis gave an eloquent illustrated talk titled “The Wayfinders: Why Ancient Wisdom Matters in a Modern World” that made a compelling case for the preservation of the intimate connections between indigenous cultures and their tribal lands.

As an anthropologist, ethnobotanist, author, photographer, and film-maker, Davis is National Geographic’s Explorer in Residence. A rapt audience viewed vibrant colorful images of denizens singing, dancing, praying, working, eating, all sharing among themselves as Davis poetically described his fascinating experiences of traveling to many remote regions around the world.

Living within these various isolated

groups, he discovered that there are ingrained spiritual connections between individual communities and the landscapes they sustainably inhabit: the river and mountain forests of South and North America; the salt-mine desert and forests of Africa; the windswept frozen Arctic; the mountain forests and ocean islands of Asia and Southeast Asia; and the deserts of Australia.

These adventures taught him that there is­–in addition to the biosphere– what he calls the “ethnosphere, defined

by Davis as the sum total of what we as human beings have achieved through our collective imagination: our thoughts, ideas, beliefs, dreams, myths, intuitions and inspirations. It represents the imaginative contributions of humanity to the planet that we are losing due to unchecked modernization and globalization.

Davis believes “.... if humans are agents of cultural destruction, we can also be facilitators of cultural survival...

What we can do is bear witness to the world as storytellers.”

The two remaining lectures are both at 7:30 p.m. in Statler Auditorium at Cornell.

W

ith their own angles, their own hypnotic frequencies, and their loose and original sort of grumbled and scratchy folk, Brooklyn indie rockers Big Thief sculpt an abstract and lush tree garden. Lead singer and guitarist Adrianne Lenker’s voice is like some fantastical bird, her guitar solos like some Neil Young turned gypsy-woman’s maddening dream. Guitarist Buck Meek’s surreal jaunts are warming, scorching, and utterly new. Bassist Max Oleartchik and drummer James Krivchenia lay down rhythm sections like a futuristic and warm Crazy Horse.

Big Thief moves a noisy length, with a melodic Americana at the heart of their wholesome being. The band’s first album Masterpiece–released this past May–is a testament to a band painting free: wide, soulful, and wondrously cranky.

“The beauty is always there in the music,” noted Lenker. “Sometimes it can be messed up and harsh, but it’s always in there. We’re looking for what feels

the most alive, you know. Masterpiece was a really spirited recording. It took us 12 days to record and it was just such a great experience. We made a studio to record it in, had fun, built fires at night, and jumped in the lake. We certainly documented a special time in our lives.”

Masterpiece has that sort of fresh and bulging energy that only special and deeply connected bands seem to produce. Every note feels equal, appreciated, and warmly accepted. This is a team holding each other up, happy to engage and assist, evolving around Lenker’s poetic and beautiful vocals continuously. There’s a happy notion and a sense of common space throughout each turning length, the band floats through a dream of sound: landscapes that echo the vast country we share. It’s a humanistic album.

“This is a band born out of friendship,” Lenker happily remarked. “And to me, that’s really the glue of the band— giving the whole thing a solid longevity. I don’t think we’ve stressed as much going through the ups and downs because of the way we function together. I’d been playing music with Buck as a duo in the city for a while, and then one day we were walking down the sidewalk and ran into Buck’s old friend Max, and he quickly became our bassist. James came on board a bit later and here we are.”

“It’s been a steady process,” Lenker continued. “Ideas have moved at their own pace. When Buck and I started playing more with electric guitars, we felt the sound needed more dimension, and everything just evolved in this beautiful

Triphammer Arts presents a fully staged studio performance of “The Classical Style: An Opera (of Sorts)”, by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Steven Stucky and librettist Jeremy Denk this Sunday.

The opera was Stucky’s last large-scale composition before his death in 2016. Inspired by pianist Charles Rosen’s book, “The Classical Style”, the play follows composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, and Ludwig van Beethoven as they descend from the heaven into a 21st century musical reality.

The Fly Rods bring their original Americana rock-and-roll to The Range this Halloween weekend. The newly opened Range is Ithaca’s freshest music venue and is located on the Commons (above Trader K’s). Joining the Fly Rods will be Bad Hand, the one-man band and evolving musical endeavor of local artist Nick Gilbert. The Fly Rods are “somewhere between the Ramones and the Grateful Dead, with a nod to Neil Young” which leaves things a bit open. Get your Halloween on in style!
