hou g h u nder c on sideration for an Empire State Development grant aimed at facilitating downtown growth, a proposal to turn the infamous Masonic Temple into a downtown entertainment center will not be moving forward, at least not for now.

The “white elephant of downtown,” as coined by Downtown Ithaca Alliance Director Gary Ferguson, will retain its moniker for the foreseeable future.

Concert promoter and organizer Dan Smalls of DSP Shows had been circling the property and had talks with the property’s owners, but said nothing came to fruition. The proposed intention for the building was to utilize it as “a multi-venue concert facility that is equipped with multiple bars, a restaurant and a cafe,” with accompanying renovations.

A Restless Life Gets Rewarded

h e pi c t u r e s o f Fr a n k Payton’s family are joyou s , b e a m i ng a s t he y hold the awards for his book, ¡Triunfarán!, which was published in November 2016. It was a picturesque September night a few weeks ago at the Plaza de Cultura y Artes in Los Angeles, what should have been a perfect end to a book-writing process that took over a decade.

But Payton was not in attendance, his ability to travel long distances diminished as a result of a bout with cancer that left him without a bladder. ¡Triun-

farán! won two awards in the Religion category that night: first place for the Spanish-language edition of the book, and an honorable mention for the English edition.

Even though he could not go, the book and its awards served as a culmination of sorts for his life’s work in service of the Salvation Army or, as he calls it, “the Army,” a widely-known religion and organization with a presence in 127 different countries. He was commissioned in 1953 and stationed in Buenos Aires, Argentina before moving about several Spanish-speaking countries, often supervising training schools of young Salvation Army officers and ascending the ranks. For his final post, he returned to Argentina for a four-and-a-half year stint as the overseer of all Salvation Army

f you had an opportunity to help lay the groundwork of opportunity for a whole new generation of girls in a West African country long-troubled with issues of social inequality, how would you go about it?

Would you go into the rural villages, educating each town one by one? Would you build a school nearby a cluster of towns, in the hopes of attracting as many students as possible? Or wou ld you t hi n k on a more regional scale, building big and helping to fulfill a half centuryold promise that, for many in Ghana, has gone unfulfilled.

This is the question approximately 500 students in Cornell University’s Sustainable Design program has been looking to solve for several years now as partners of the nonprofit Voices Of African Mothers, a non-governmental organization committed to ensuring education for girls across the country where it had long been denied.

With 200 acres to work with, the students – spanning disciplines from architecture to civil engineering and computer science – have been working to design a sort of regional education center in the town of Sogakope to provide a means for girls from all over West Africa, not just the immediate region, to learn essential skills needed to help reverse the trends of educa-

tional inequality that have long troubled the country. VAM Village, which recently started construction, will be an ecological hub where students can learn to farm and understand the meaning of sustainability by growing and using their own produce.

The school will be built using locally sourced materials, alternative energy technologies and passive energy systems, creating what the project’s designers say will be “a model of ecological sustainability for the region.”

“It’s crazy,” said Kenneth Yeung, a Cornell freshman who joined the program this semester. “It’s going to be amazing.”

The history behind education in Ghana is a complicated one, where inequality has been a hurdle that even through national legislation has been difficult to overcome.

In the 1960s, the Ghanaian government passed a national law that, for the first time in its history, promised young girls in its country more opportunity to receive an education than it ever had before. Called the Education Act of 1961, the new law declared primary education across the recently independent West African nation compulsory and free (except for books and supplies), implementing a fine for any parent who did not send their child to school. The effects were immediate: enrollment in primary schools nearly doubled, while the gender gap in those schools decreased from 36 percent of primary students being female in 1960 to 44 percent eight years later.

Though still less than a quarter of students in secondar y schools in 1968 were female, just up three percent from the time the law was passed, the act

was considered one of the first equalizers in a nation where, culturally, gender inequality has long been considered the norm.

Then, political instability hit the young nation in the ensuing decades and the culturally ingrained inequality, compared with a rising rate of financial instability, led to a decline in opportunity for girls across the country to gain an education which, in some areas, never bounced back, even after the Education Act was implemented into the nation’s constitution in 1992.

While today approximately 75 percent of males and females are enrolled in primary school and, statistically, more females are enrolled in school than males, females still lack in opportunity to continue their education into adulthood: According to national education statistics, 33 percent of all women – compared to 15 percent of men – have no education and for girls nationwide, enrollment figures peak at the age of nine, sharply dropping below 65 percent enrollment at the age of 16. Overall, female illiteracy rates – especially in rural areas – are dramatic, and social conditions from early pregnancy and historically conditioned gender inequity have meant a large barrier to hurdle for girls across generations even in years post-Education Act. This school, hopefully, will help to change that.

In 2013, a group of Cornellians travelled to Sogakope in an effort to see how they could potentially work with VAM in a partnership to help improve the quality of life there. By 2015, students in the Sustainable Design program had stepped in and since, have been travelling back and forth between the Ithaca campus and the town of Sogakope, working to understand the environment to which they are building to fit the cultural

and social needs of the area.

They were, after all, designing a 200 acre pillar of a place with a culture they, an ocean away, had to learn and navigate intuitively, rather than by feel.

“They really wanted to incorporate the architectural values that the people of Sogakope had in mind, because it was supposed to serve as a community space as well as a classroom” said Yeung. “...a lot of thinking went into making it culturally appropriate but not impose anything.”

It is largely a primary school: with education from pre-school to approximately junior high age, the school won’t wholly solve the educational gap for many. However, Yeung said the programs held at VAM Village, the groundwork will be set for girls to empower themselves to cont inue t heir educat ion elsewhere as the organization – short on resources – seeks to expand its available resources on campus to provide for a broader age range.

“We’re hoping this is a baby step in the right direction,” he said.

With two-and-a-half years estimated to completion, moods are high in the program. Once finished, the open-air school w i l l be st a f fed si m i la rly to VAM’s other school in Kumasi, with extensive staff and students from partner schools the world over. On site, the project will include, along with school rooms, a conference center; temporary housing for participants, visitors, staff and volunteers; catering facilities; administrative offices; and a nursery/kindergarten for the children of the participants and workers.

“Plus it has this added value of multifunctional classrooms where members of the community can hold discussions or talk to other community members,” Yeung said. “I think that would serve a very important social function that doesn’t exist at the moment.”

Large Turnout Saves Buffalo St. Books... For Now

uffalo Street Books is in a deep financial hole to the tune of $100,000, but an emergency owners meeting organized for Thursday night provided, at least for a short time, a ray of hope.

The bookstore’s Board of Directors had issued a call for owners, and the general public, to convene to announce the specifics of the store’s current financial crisis. The crowd of well over 100 people was sizable and supportive, packing the store’s mall-side segment, standing and sitting.

Board President Rob Vanderlan explained throughout the night that the situation was without a doubt life or death: the store had been losing around $50,000 a year (which was actually better than it had been doing several years ago) but the losses picked up momentum this year. Vanderlan said in order to survive shortterm, the store needs $75,000, to begin paying certain things off and keep their head somewhat at sea level, if not above water.

The store has had to stop ordering books from publishers because of the debts to them, and must now buy from the more expensive distributors. Vanderlan mentioned during the meeting that he was more optimistic having seen the large crowd the meeting had attracted. Providing even more hope was the anonymous delivery of a check by a man at the end of the meeting for $6,000.

Beyond the night’s financial benefits for the store, plenty of

people either shouted out ideas or wrote suggestions down for submission. The only idea that Vanderlan truly ruled out was the establishment of a cafe or coffee shop within the bookstore, which he said the landlord would not allow. Nearly all other ideas will be considered though, among the crowd submissions: pop-up shops at other local events, themed festivals, and different configurations of memberships and payments.

Though the suggestions were appreciated, Vanderlan had also come in with a general plan. First, the store may sacrifice the very mall-side segment that the crowd continued on page 5

ast Friday, Oct. 13, Turkish spiritual musician Latif Bolat visited the Greater Ithaca Activities Center for a workshop organized in partnership with the Cornell Concert Series. The event was part of a week-long residency at Cornell for Bolat, which included multiple performances of Turkish Sufi music, as well as lectures to the public and Cornell classes on politics, religion, and cultural differences. It also comes in the wake of the recent suspension of travel visas between the United States and Turkey.

The Masonic Temple, on the corner of North Cayuga and East Seneca Streets, has sat empty for years but has had several permutations previously, including as a nightclub and restaurant. Beyond that, there’s been countless proposals and false starts, each one coming up short in some way or another: perhaps most recently prior to Smalls’ attempt, the History Center had looked into the property in 2015. It has since announced plans to move into a building on The Commons purchased by Tompkins County to serve as a regional heritage center.

The building is owned by local landlord and developer Jason Fane of Ithaca Renting renow n, whose ubiqu itous posters still adorn the outside of the historically-designated building, originally constructed in the 1920s. Fane’s attorney, Nathan Lyman, would not go into detail about the negotiations with Smalls, or any other future plans for the long-vacant property. In December, Lyman had said a residential option for the building is not being discussed.

“In any event it is premature for us to comment further on this project,” Lyman wrote in an email. “The building is not currently for sale.”

Ly ma n a lso decl i ned to comment on the progress of a proposed elevator and ramp addition to the Temple which was approved by the Ithaca Landmarks Preservation Commission at its December meeting. The renovations would have helped bring the building into conformity with standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act, as accessibility has long been an issue needing to be solved with the building before occupancy can take place.

Why The Democrats Endorse

Last week, the Ithaca Times published an editorial arguing that the local Democratic Party’s practice of endorsing candidates, particularly with increased interest by independents, only serves to discourage others from running. The Times received two rebuttals this week, one from the Fifth Ward Democrats and one from the leader of the Tompkins County Democratic Committee, as a response to the piece.

n response to your editorial suggesting that “local endorsements are useless,” it is important to understand that local political parties have the responsibility to help find and elect the best and most representative candidates they can find for their communities. It is also important to understand that the county political committees are composed of smaller committees in each town and ward of the City. We try to make these committees representative of the diversity in their respective town and wards. ​E lection law requires that the number of county committee members in each election district be from two to four. These are elected positions, appearing on the general election ballot when there is a primary for a particular district. In addition, the town and ward committees can and do elect an unlimited number of town or ward committee members who are not members of the county committee. They do, however, participate in local endorsements.

These town and ward committees interview candidates in open session and consider endorsements based on their meetings with

them. On the basis of this information, they often make endorsements— messages about their ​preferences to ​the communities they represent. For the Times to suggest not doing this because it may make someone who does not​ obtain the endorsement unhappy does not make much sense. The same​ ​logic would ​apply to any election, as those candidates who are not successful certainly may feel unhappy!

If more than one candidate comes before the committee, primary elections open to all members in the jurisdiction are held. The winner is then the duly nominated candidate for the Party, based on the votes open to all registered Party members in the jurisdiction. In some towns, the process is handled through caucus.

We try to keep our committees representative of the demographic shifts in our county. For example, after the last election, our membership increased significantly, with many of those members adding to our diversity, including that of age and perhaps philosophy.

The editorial points out that the number of independents has risen, with the implication that local endorsements from parties are irrelevant to the unaffiliated voter. That is arguable, as endorsements well may influence their votes.

Another option for unaffiliated voters is to join the Party most reflective of their views.

Finally, since candidates usually seek Party endorsements at the local level, those candidates’ judgment seems to be that they are useful, contin u ed on page 7

n October 21, 2017, the Ithaca Baha’i community, Bahá’ís all around the world and admirers of Bahá’u’lláh’s message will be celebrating the 200th year anniversary of his birth.

In the world’s current condition of degradation, the evidence of the execrable impediments of the old-world order that have seeded division and animosity among the people of the earth is being unveiled. Yet at the same time revealing the pristine opportunity to secure an unbreakable foundation cemented by unity. In an excerpt from his writing, Bahá’u’lláh proclaimed that “the well-being of mankind, its peace and security, are unattainable unless and until its unity is firmly established.”

This I firmly believe is indispensable for the establishment of world unity, which we so desperately need.

the lives of many Bahá’ís in Ithaca. As early as 1897, the unifying message of Bahá’u’lláh’s teaching captivated members of the Ithaca community and by 1898 there were 23 Bahá’ís residing in the city. In 1912, several Ithacans traveled to New York City to meet Abdu’lBahá, the eldest son of Bahá’u’lláh.

Hettie B. Townley, a Bahá’í nurse, was one of the few fortunate Ithacans to meet ‘Abdu’l-Bahá.

Since that time, Bahá’u’lláh’s teachings continue to have a notable impact in Ithaca through individual and collective actions of local Bahá’ís that are centered on community advancement and unity. For example, in the 1990s the Bahá’ís helped start the Ithaca Institute for the Healing of Racism, an area in which members continue to be active.

Today, the Bahá’í community of Ithaca is composed of about 60 members from a beautiful array of backgrounds. With their friends and neighbors, Bahá’ís are striving to build communities where children, young people and adults can together develop

their God-given capacities and apply these as they forge new paths towards a world free of prejudice and war, one animated by love, justice and peace.

To spearhead this process, Bahá’ís in Ithaca engage in several activities aimed at building individual capacity and continue the spirit of service. Some of these activities include: children classes, which are spiritual and moral education of children offered on a weekly basis in several locations and are open to all and study circles, where groups of people from all backgrounds study together sacred writings, discuss their meaning and how to translate these teachings into action. Bahá’ís also support junior youth programs, where special attention is given to early adolescents, who are experiencing rapid physical, intellectual and emotional changes, in order to help them develop their latent powers so they can contribute to the material and spiritual progress of their local communities.

Celebrating the birth of Baha’u’llah in remembrance of his teachings, which has served as a framework for many service projects in Ithaca and also bolstered the capacity of Bahá’ís to engage in meaningful change in their communities, is significant.

This was written as a letter to Mayor Svante Myrick by a West Hill resident.

W

est Hill has been subjected to mistreatment by the local governments for decades.

This mistreatment amounts to ghettoization. This might seem an extreme description but consider this: in practical terms, ghettoization puts certain people in or restricted to an isolated or segregated place, group or situation. Residents of West Hill - and the communities beyond the city limits are treated as if they are different from the other parts of society/community, as if their activities and interests are unimportant. Separated by the body of water (Cayuga Lake and the canal), we depend on the other side for all essential needs: employment, schooling, shopping, child care, medical care, after school activities, dining, gyms, entertainment and other important services. Our means to reach the other side are limited and involve mainly three already congested and narrow bridges. The congestion is so significant that bus service is cut back during peak commuting hours.

During the last twenty five years, the majority of cluster or high-density, low-income affordable housing in Ithaca, both city and town, ended up on West Hill not by chance but by design. No significant infrastructure improvements ever followed despite

the obvious need for better roads, sidewalks, and mass transportation from the isolated and segregated residents. Crime on West Hill, including the violent variety, has necessitated establishing a new police precinct on the West End. Property values have been depressed.

Year after year, the resources to improve the infrastructure and services have been disproportionately used to benefit the residents east of the canal leaving the tax paying West Hill disadvantaged and left out.

West Hill is an underserved community.

The contrast between us and other communities in Ithaca – each enjoying a vibrant economic base and easy access to services – is stark. With the exception of Cayuga Medical Center, all major employers are on the other side of the canal. While all other neighborhoods have their own elementary schools, our kids are bused to various schools throughout the school district.

In this light, your decision to decrease the number of lanes on the W MLK Bridge, which is commonly known as a RT 79 bridge over the canal, to add bike lanes – all done without adequate public notice and environmental impact review – is adding insult to the injury.

This decision represents discrimination against our community and other communities west of Ithaca that depend on RT 79.

Clearly, similar draconian measures were not attempted in other more affluent neighborhoods (e.g. Belle Sherman’s E RT79 on the way to downtown or East Hill’s Triphammer Rd by the mall).

Since you have failed to perform any recent and well-timed traffic studies that would allow you to assess the need for the proposed bike lanes, project future utilization of the bridge’s surface or justify the use of federal and state transportation funds, I undertook a limited effort of my own. I counted all users on bridge on Monday, 10/02/17 during the morning rush hours.

Attached you will find a compilation of the results. I do not claim that traffic on that day is representative of all work days but the results give us a good baseline. Other days cannot be that much different. Even if the average number of bikers was twice as big as the short survey showed the big picture would not change.

My conclusions are: If implemented, the new bike lanes would lay unused 99% of time resulting in gross and inexcusable under-utilization of the bridge’s surface; The number of bikers, even during the morning rush hours, is so marginal there is no justification for the proposed bike lanes; The convenience to a few bikers would be at the expense of thousands of car commuters that cross the bridge on daily basis to meet their most essential needs; The minimal decrease in emissions a few bikers can affect does not justify the use of state and federal transportation funds - especially in the light of decisive public opposition; Intentionally creating a congestion on the bridge to burden and distress our community is unethical and unacceptable.

I strongly suggest you return to the drawing board to modify the Route 79 Bridge re-design proposal.

A Novelist’s Son Seeks To Reconcile With His Father’s Complex Past

Gone is the sharp click-clacking of a typewriter, the ringing of a bell as it hit its margins, and the tinkling of ice against a sweating glass of bourbon as the man behind the cacophony takes another sip.

There are no more poker games. No more clutter. No more noise from the television as Alex Trebek passes plaudits to the contestants who score favorably on the Daily Double.

But for the music that vanished in June 2012, nobody’s forgotten the voice of Dan McCall.

“Hollywood” Dan McCall, anyone who knew him would say, was a man made for T.V. Tanned and gifted with a gleaming smile, the image belies the face of a man whose Fall and Spring were spent far off from the sun-soaked eternity of his native Southern California’s mild, Mediterranean climate.

Outspoken, charismatic and oftentimes controversial, his gruff, booming timbre commanded dozens of sections in Cornell University’s English Department, a place he held court over for 40 years. He was show business incarnate, boasting a personality so large, so infectious, so polarizing, it could seemingly not be contained within a single lifetime: it needed to be projected, shared, broadcast into the collective psyche of an entire nation – rapt at attention with the whirlwind that was Dan McCall.

It seemed for a time, everybody knew who he was. Everyone, except Dan McCall himself.

Dan McCall was many things, an exotic anomaly of Modesto, California by way of Eugene, Oregon. He was a respected critic of American literature, a bestselling author, a professor of high regard, a husband, a father; a man with an enviable capacity for charm and generosity. But he was also a highly imperfect being: a man easily taken to vice, prone to bouts of cruelty and provocation that came from somewhere mysterious, some place within him he seemed aware of but he, nor those closest to him, could ever seem to define.

It was a question he, and his typewriter, would grapple with for a lifetime. *** The summer of 2012 was a stressful one for Steven McCall.

For ten profound days in June, he had been at his father’s bedside – a constant companion during the final moments as a long succession of callers gathered for a final dose of his father’s gruff charm. After Dan’s death on June 17th, Steven had a funeral to plan, documents to pore over and a life to piece together, tie up and settle with the state: the last bureaucratic steps to eternity, he thought.

Then he turned his attention toward the inside of the house.

Since 1966 Dan McCall had lived in this modest two-story Colonial, purchased

upon his hiring to Cornell’s faculty that year. Straight from the doctoral program at Columbia University, Dan McCall was a man on his own path: he’d just married his French teacher from Columbia, a fellow graduate student named Dorothy Kaufmann, who would later become the mother to his only child. It was a place he’d come to – New York City – gray and lit in neon light, that marked a far deviation from the life he, the man who would later become “Hollywood” Dan McCall, always seemed destined: a life lived out through the screens of millions of Americans.

“After Dan graduated from Stanford,” Dorothy, whom he remained married to for ten years, read at his funeral, “he made what I still consider his bravest decision. It had been understood that he would go to graduate school at UCLA to study television and perhaps, become a talk show host. Instead, he broke away from the path he had been programmed to follow and decided to go to New York City, a world away, and pursue his deepest passion: literature.”

For years, the calendar went season by season for Dan McCall. In spring and in fall, he’d take his books and his focus to the classrooms of Cornell – the popular teacher, well-liked and received by the students he gave so much of his time to. In the offseason, he’d head back to Laguna Beach, where he’d write his novels.

“After several weeks, I worked up the courage to show him one of my short stories,” one of his first students, Reuben Munday, who’d developed an extremely close, lifelong friendship with him, once wrote: “He told me that he thought the story was ‘very creative.’”

“But, if I worked with him,” he joked, “we could make it better. We made it better, and a friendship developed.”

A gifted teacher, Dan had a magnetic demeanor in the classroom and on campus, as loved as he was loathed. He had venerable qualities, his word of honor and integrity committing him to a series of inalienable principles few could shake. He believed in literature and shunned the idea of theory, concerned about the distortion of the meaning and experience of literature. The notion of the theorists, he thought, was once you dehumanize yourself from the true meaning

of the written word, twist its motivations, one loses all sense of literature’s purpose.

“Dan was very precocious,” Lamar Herrin, a colleague and longtime poker partner said in an interview. “I could tell you a million stories about him if you wanted to hear ‘em… he was self-consciously and theatrically gruff: as with a lot of gruff people, he had this sentimental, sweeter side that he didn’t like to expose all the time. But he created a lot of enemies; he got on his principled high horse a lot. He couldn’t stand the theorists.”

McCall, in Herrin’s terms, liked literature as it was classically understood, not so much political or critical perspectives on these pieces – his territory of the 1800s to the 1950s – of American literature.

“He thought [the theorists] would take swipes at these works of art, just to get what they wanted to bolster their theory only to run off,” Herrin said. “And Dan didn’t like that.”

But McCall was also a resolute man, one for whom there always had to be a “right” answer.

“He’d ask people, ‘Rank in order the five greatest books you’ve ever read,’” Steven says. “He’d ask in this tongue-in-cheek sort of way, implying he knew he was full of crap. At the same time though, he believed intensely there was only one ‘correct’ way to answer the question.”

But even if Dan’s views were wrong in the popular sense, he was adamant and unapologetic if he believed he was in the right. He liked to provoke people in his own theatrical way, Herrin said: he told off-color jokes, politically incorrect jokes, jokes that challenged ideals of class, race… constantly challenging the fragile lines that divide and categorize us in society that too often, go untouched. One of his favorite icebreakers for his classes, in fact, was having each student write a joke to share with the class to start off each semester which, funny or not, they would then have to defend in front of the class. Some would even make their way to the poker table each month, a poker table that included the likes Donald Cooke, a Cornell chemist who had been in the war room with General Eisenhower planning analytical weather forecasts in the lead-up to Normandy. “He’d heard it all,” Herrin said.

“And even he would get offended by some of these jokes.”

“And some of [the jokes] were very foul,” mused Herrin. “Some of them you’d never forget, but I’ve managed to.”

He was a polarizing personality. Some accepted and enjoyed his outrageousness.

Others, naturally, took offense.

But as selfless with his time and social as he could be, Hollywood Dan, by any measure, was something of a narcissist yet, in

private, savagely self-critical and constantly over examining of his own psyche. In fiction, it’s often said a great writer is one who borrows from real life, but projects their own worldview and perspective upon their characters.

“His old friend Bert States said to him, ‘do you realize every book you write is about yourself?’” Steven recalled. “My father knew himself intimately well and yet was a stranger to himself at the same time.”

On the day one dies, it could be thought the truth of who they are and the urge to answer that question – ‘who is Dan McCall?’ – oftentimes dies with them.

cence defined by his own greatness. He was an eloquent speaker forged through an obsession with winning. He traveled the country, taking titles from state to state and delivering moving performances, artificial passion distilled through his own, conditioned values of patriotism and excellence.

“I’m the least insecure kid I know,” he said once to a teacher, Mr. Renner, responding in turn that the only pure world was one with only a single person in it.

Perhaps that was his plight.

Through his newfound fame, he played the role of emcee at a number of high school functions, often to the vexation of his lessaccomplished peers – the “jealous” ones, as his mother would say. Through his teenage

In his youth, Dan McCall had been something of a prodigal son of oration.

At the age of 12, he captivated audiences with his recitation of the legend of Johnny Appleseed, a performance that boosted him to the first of what would be several national championships in speechcraft and the All-American status as “California Boy Of The Year.” The young Dan McCall, by all accounts, was exactly how his parents “trained” him to be: the great speaker, the star performer, the perfect version of American exceptionalism his father, a prominent professor of rhetoric, had always envisioned him to be.

It was a childhood that gave him fame, gave him direction, put him through school and arguably, defined the person who he would eventually become. But in living it, it perhaps killed the man who could have been.

“He always had these contradictory, conflicted ties to his teenage past,” said Steven.

“On one hand, he was terribly proud of it.

On the other hand, he was traumatized by it. And the question of whether his parents pushed him to do this or whether he wanted it himself is, frankly, an open question and still a bit mysterious.”

Dan McCall lived through his adoles-

years, he missed out on many of the normal rites of passage-- friendships, alcohol, the carnal pleasures we’re so wont to think as taboo in the 1950s. But he had fame and notoriety, at the very least. He was “the boy on the unicycle,” the kid from Eugene with his own variety show winning acclaim on regionally distributed television. At an older age, he shook hands with politicians – important ones – and found himself a player in the quiz show scandals of the 1950s, giving pre-packaged answers to the host of the nationally syndicated show Strike It Rich in return for a new wardrobe and a few minutes of airtime.

Growing up, he’d always assumed he’d be on television forever. The plan, always, was Stanford, UCLA, then straight to the silver screen. He was too perfect for it, his trajectory too focused not to end up with a name in lights. And until the day he died, he never seemed to know whether that was him that was meant for Hollywood or who he was trained to be. *** O c tob er

Four times throughout his life, Dan McCall sat down to try and make sense of it all.

Plenty of his friends, like Herrin, knew about Dan McCall’s memoirs. Steven, having read two separate drafts written in 1999 and 2006, knew about them as well. What they didn’t know was how many dozens of drafts written in earlier years were hidden somewhere among the stacks in that house on Midway.

“My Dad was always so over-the-top”, Steven said. “I remember him telling me, ‘I know where every single piece of paper is in this house.” But once I started going through everything, I discovered how obviously that was a blatant and complete lie.”

After settling his father’s affairs that summer of 2012, he set about the arduous task of cleaning up the house. He gave away or sold many of the 3,500 or so books packed in between the walls, keeping only a few as well as his father’s more rare editions of the books he’d written, several of which were translated into a number of different languages. Then he turned his attention to the papers, crammed in every spare space in the house from the basement to the attic.

Unfinished manuscripts, pieces of published novels shoved away that didn’t make the final cut, letters to and from friends, endless comments scrawled on 3x5 notecards, research materials… a disorderly hodgepodge offering a window into the mind of Dan McCall over the previous 40 years.

And among the havoc was the draft of a memoir Steven had never seen before: “Me and my brothers were going to a whorehouse…”

It took several months to sort it all out.

Steven sat on the floor of Dan’s expansive living room, many nights spent sorting out hundreds of thousands of pages into individual piles based on their corresponding genre – letter, notes, novel, memoir – and the year they were produced.

Once had had separated out all the memoir material, Steven realized that there were four distinct time periods in which Dan had worked on the memoir – 1970, 1986, 1999, and 2006 – each with distinct characteristics. Pages from the 1970 manuscripts, yellowed and decaying with age, were typed up on an older crème-colored typewriter that Steven found in the basement. The pages from the 1986 drafts bore the distinctive typeface of a Royal Deluxe: Hemingway’s brand of choice. The 1999 and 2006 versions were easily identifiable by their printer font, since they were typed up on a word processor by an assistant (one of the few concessions made by “old school Dan” to the digital age). best, knew where to take it.

Each draft was written without a chronology, darting back and forth between past and present. So in each version, Steven ordered the storyline of each of the four distinct manuscripts into chronological order to create paralleling accounts of Dan’s life in each. Then it was about finding the differences in each separate draft of each separate year, splicing sentences from every draft of each year’s iteration to create the “best” version of each.

Each round, he would consult Dorothy and, oftentimes, they agreed with each other. Particularly on the decision to put all these disjointed thoughts – these crazy

episodes of introspection and self discovery – into order.

“That was one of the artistic decisions I am confident was the right one,” Steven said. ““He wrote the book dozens of different times in dozens of different ways, but every time he wrote it, he did so in a way that was often fragmented and a bit confusing. One of the biggest contributions I made was putting the story in chronological order.”

Some of the versions flowed well together.

1999 and 2006 – the last attempts to get it all down – were intellectually consistent. 1970, artfully done as it was, was filled with numerous passages needed to fill the gaps. In a literary sense, all the pieces were there. But

the biggest challenge, seemingly, could be seen in giving order to a story its author saw as chaotic and inexplicable.

A memoir, at its heart, is a novelist’s attempt to explain himself honestly. In McCall’s four attempts at finding meaning, he examines his adolescence at four separate stages of his life, each told from a separate understanding of his own existence.

As a 30-year-old in 1970, Dan McCall was a man at the height of his powers, a flamboyant, magnetic personality four years from completing what would inarguably become his greatest hit, Jack The Bear. In the year 1970 lived a writer armed with the infallible power to transport a reader directly

into a world he had painted from the deepest pockets of his own creative potential: he was a writer that didn’t just invite you into his world – he dragged you into it. In 1986, the “magic couple” of Dorothy and Dan had long ago ended, a new significant relationship had just dissolved, his health was failing, and he was struggling with the futility of alcoholism. “It was a dark period of his life, and it was reflected in a dark version of his memoir,” Steven said.

In the 90s he began to recover somewhat, emerging a more contemplative man with a maturing perception of his childhood. Over the years, McCall had grown a better understanding of how his past affected his present, how the decisions along the way led to where he had ended up: “I was very close to him, his only child, and so I felt like I knew him as well as anyone in the world,” Steven said. “And by taking the time to follow the evolution of his drafts, I developed a deeper intuition for his mindset as a writer. I came to understand not only the “how”, but the “why” as well —I knew the purpose of each sentence.” *** “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

–‘The Great Gatsby,’ Final Line In the end, the conclusion we come to at the end of Boy On A Unicycle – the result of Steven’s years of effort and 40 years of Dan’s struggle – remains a mysterious one. To the man who loathed theory and loved Jeopardy, where everything had a “right answer,” maybe it was a futile exercise trying to find the answer to an unknowable question. Maybe the pursuit of a truth not so simply told was an impossible task for a man who, by modern understanding, had everything anyone could have ever wanted: he escaped from his destiny to find his own.

But the open-ended question, Steven rightfully closes the memoir with, is whether or not that destiny was really his own. Is the person at the end of the book a portrait of the truest version of Dan McCall? Did he find himself? Or is he the unshakeable result of trauma, the manifestation of something lost that we’ll never get back?

At the book’s close, we realize we may never really know the story of Dan McCall, the meaning of his life, what was lost and what might have been.

Couldn’t we all say the same?

Payton, casually checking in on his former country of residence, was watching a live stream via Facebook. Suddenly, none other than the Salvation Army’s local Argentinian band walked out onstage, invited to perform by the event’s organizers. Payton said he got chills at his computer, understanding the significance of the moment: the Army’s band, filled with young adults indicating a healthy future for the church, being invited to one of the most important religious events the country would see all year.

There were several reasons for Payton’s pride that day, some obvious and some not.

His second stint in Buenos Aires was spent fighting the Army’s financial and morale problems there, a deep hole from which he was, financially at least, able to guide them, though he credits the Lord with that turnaround. But to hear him talk about it, it’s clear his time in Argentina was dotted with struggles. He calls his leadership role there, and the corrective decisions he had to make, the biggest challenge of his time in the Army.

His resilience and faith had been tested, and yet here, 20 years later, was a thriving next wave of Argentine Salvationists.

“If there is a Devil, and we believe there is one, the one he wants to discourage is the person who is a leader, because he knows if he can discourage that person, he can discourage those underneath,” he said. “I think those of us who have been in ministry need to be very careful to make sure that we are doing the right thing, being faithful, because people are watching us and we can influence for good or bad.”

With his years of service and expertise in the Salvation Army’s Central and South American operations, he was a natural choice to pen an intensive history of the organization’s Hispanic ministry in the United States and Puerto Rico. Payton’s not a natural writer, in fact he said his mother would have “died a second death” if she had heard he was authoring a book, but he said the opportunity to write it is one of the great privileges he’s ever experienced. He started the book in 2003, trekking back and forth around the country to conduct research, always accompanied by his wife and sometimes editor, Yvonne, whose critiques would prove invaluable along the book’s trying six year research and writing process.

He wouldn’t write the book, he said, when the Salvation Army asked him but, they would. Some might deem that a poignant overstatement, but Yvonne actually did

was sitting in, opting to shrink its square feet and thus lower its rent several thousand dollars a year. Along with that was reducing payroll by $15,000. Still though, Vanderlan said, that would get them only a bit closer to the destination, which is where the store’s owners, community members who have bought a share in the store for $250 since 2011, would learn their tasks: efforts to drive sales and efforts to fundraise.

Those take a few forms, but Vanderlan laid out his initial ideas. First, people could volunteer at the store, assisting book sellers and generally decreasing the burden on paid staff. As for fundraising, to get things started,

rewrite an entire chapter of the book at one point, Payton said with a laugh, “because it was so bad.”

Translated, triunfarán roughly means “they will triumph,” a phrase clearly important to Payton. He wanted to append a verse from the Salvation Army songbook which dealt with triumph to the Epilogue section of the book, but was overruled by his editor for the final print version. So Payton, unwilling to settle, simply places a sticker printed with the verse on the Epilogue’s title page of every book he gives away.

The many moves throughout his adult life did not much phase Payton; generations of Paytons have belonged to the Salvation Army starting with his grandmother, so he was used to the cyclical nature of Army life. It did present some measure of difficulty in his adult life, though, as Payton emphasized that simply moving somewhere and assimilating doesn’t necessarily put someone in the best position to help the disadvantaged there.

“It’s one thing to learn the language and the culture, it’s another to learn the situation,” Payton said.

Like so many people, his parents ended up in Ithaca somewhat randomly, then fell in love with the city during a 22-month stationing here and ended up settling down for good in Tompkins County. Payton has been retired here for 20 years but has stayed busy with the book and his involvement with the Salvation Army locally, through family and his participation in the Ithacan Army’s band and choir.

Retirement has brought Payton his proudest moment, though it was still intrinsically tied to the Army, and to music.

One thing that seems certain about Payton is he’s fueled by optimism. Maybe someone has to be to write a book with no formal training. Meeting any negatives in his life is Payton’s resolve; through any struggle with his ministry, his illness, or even when he thinks back on his mother, an orphan who lost her grandmother, mother and father in rapid succession during her early teens who he references often and fondly. His philosophy on life’s challenges seems to apply universally here, a cover-all twist on the “what doesn’t kill you” adage that Payton’s used since a particularly troubling time during the mid-1970s.

“I think, maybe what’s happening to me is meant to teach me something,” Payton said, admitting there are times he fails to apply the saying to his own life. “I think God teaches through circumstance. Perhaps what the Devil meant for evil, God meant for good.”

“Best case scenario, we stay open,” Vanderlan said. “That’s a huge victory.”

Fortunately, it seems the community is willing to extend a financial hand for their beloved local bookstore. Many expressed a common sentiment: While it’s hard to describe, having Buffalo Street Books in town, along with other bookstores, is just important to them. It’s comforting.

“I’ve always felt like a bookstore is a great alternative to therapy, and it doesn’t cost anything,” said Rob Vaczek, a community member.

oy Staley is still around, so I won’t embarrass him with words like “legend” or “icon,” but under his guidance, the Ithaca High girl’s swimming team put up some amazing numbers and streaks.

Mike Blakely-Armitage took the reins of the program three years ago and, with girls who were around during Staley’s tenure, the Little Red ran the program’s dual-meet win streak to stretching across more than two decades. Horseheads ended that streak last month, but the team is building its own identity, and Blakely-Armitage likes what he sees.

“I would say that the general theme of our team is a ‘youth movement.’ We have a lot of young swimmers that are right on the cusp.”

For example, Lucia Salfi came in second place at last weekend ’s prestigious Jack Masters Memorial invite, nailing a personal high score of 378.00. “She was expected to do well,” coach Mike said, “as last weekend at the Shenendehowa Invitational she was one small slip-up from doing very well there too.” He added, “She made a mistake, but when you’re facing such good competition, you can take yourself out of the competition with a mental mistake.”

For Bolat, who was born in Turkey in 1955, it was yet another opportunity to share his unique culture with others who might not be aware of it. As a child, Bolat learned to play the piano, but because the keyboard wasn’t customary of traditional Turkish music, in his thirties, Bolat picked up the saz, a Turkish instrument with seven strings and adjustable frets, similar to a lute.

As advice to the youth, Bolat said, “You’ve got to search for your thing that you really enjoy doing. If you do it earlier, you’re better off. You don’t have to detour too much to find a really good thing to do. That’s the lesson of music.”

Justice voices a similar opinion. “Performance on a stage reaches people in a very special way, and it can also be very impactful to meet the musicians and have conversations.”

Bolat’s visit to GIAC has more than just a musical impact, too. Although the youth did not engage in an in-depth conversation with Bolat about cultural differences, it is nonetheless important to expose young people to other ways of living and thinking in order to promote acceptance and tolerance. Says Justice, “Even if very young students ask more questions about ‘What do people eat in Turkey?’ or ‘How long did it take you to learn to play that?’ than they do

about the music itself, they are learning to engage with people who are different than they are.”

Additionally, this interaction help people with diverging backgrounds and ways of life to find commonalities between each other.

“By talking to someone from half the world away, students started to learn that the world’s people have a lot more in common than we might expect at first,” Justice says.

While the GIAC youth he spoke to might not come to immediate realizations as a result of the workshop, Bolat hopes that they will remember the culture that his music brought when they’re older, recounting one of his own experiences: “I remember from my elementary school days a yogi came.

We called him ‘man with no bones, because he used to do interesting numbers. I still remember it, and that was almost 60 years ago. So, these kinds of things can function in important roles,” he says. “You can build a better understanding among people.”

came to the U.S. on a Turkish scholarship to attend San Francisco State University and receive his MBA in computer engineering.

After graduate school, Bolat worked a variety of jobs, including as a computer engineer in Silicon Valley, a restaurant waiter, a mailman, a journalist, and a high school teacher.

However, Bolat who had a degree in opera from a Turkish conservatory before coming to the United States, could not abandon his passion, and returned to music. Since then, he has visited universities in 15 U.S. states, performing his music, and lecturing on Turkish music theory, Turkish and Ottoman history, and Turkish sufism.

For the Cornell Concert Series, hosting Bolat provides an opportunity to educate students and the Ithaca community alike to the relationship between politics, societal differences, and culture. “When the opportunity arose to bring him to Cornell, I hoped that a new generation of students would be able to experience his sonic tradition and philosophical ethos,” says Justice, who was first heard Bolat’s music as an undergraduate at the College of William and Mary.

“Latif is certainly one of the more ideological performers that we have presented, or at least one of the most open about his beliefs, but this also stems from the tradition that he is presenting.”

Bolat likes to describe his music as more than just sound—it’s a way of communication. “Music—it’s very clichè—but it’s one of the wonderful common languages among people that brings people together,” says Bolat, whose music also has a history to it.

“Sufi spiritual music is not just music: it has great poetry. And without that great poetry, there wouldn’t be any music,” he says. “And that poetry is not up in the air—there’s a philosophy behind it. So, this genre of music is a very wholesome things. There’s a philosophy, and poetry based on that philosophy, and music based on that poetry, and then

henever my schedule permits, and I decide to eat at Taverna Banfi, I try to go there at lunch time.

Although the noise level is generally higher than at dinner, I really enjoy the atmosphere during the buffets where, on weekdays, the restaurant offers three buffet options, all the offerings attractively presented and clearly labeled: a full lunch, $20; soup and salad, $16; and dessert, $8. The dessert buffet has been improved greatly with time, with a copious selection of individual portions of mousse, crème caramel, cakes and pies.

I think the best value is the full lunch, though I can understand that not everyone shares my voracious appetite.

At the entrance, after securing a plate, there’s a table with a half dozen salads, many of which would appeal to vegetarians. Next, there’s a daily soup offering which is often an innovative selection. On a recent visit, I helped myself to a moderately spicy Bahamian broth with bits of fish and vegetables that was original and tasty. On the steam table there is usually a creative pasta concoction, a seafood offering and several combinations of vegetables. My most recent visit offered a tray of roasted carrots and parsnips as well as another offering of lentils and tomatoes. All the veggies were well-seasoned and cooked just right.

Sodas, tea and coffee, served hot or iced, are part of the deal, as are refills.

There’s no buffet on Saturday but the Sunday brunch ($22.50) is excellent. Offerings include much the same as is available during the week with the addition of some breakfast items including shrimp and smoked salmon with the normal accompaniments.

If, at lunch, you choose to order from the a la carte menu, the cost could mount past the buffet price rather quickly. Just ordering a sandwich, for example, would set you back $14-$16, while individual pasta dishes run $15-$18 and entrees range from $16-$18.

Oftentimes, these include the same items found on the buffet steam table. Salads are $10-$12 with another $4-$10 being added for an accompanying protein.

Service at Banfi’s, located in the Statler Hotel on Cornell’s campus, can be irregular.

Lunch is usually served by veterans and runs smoothly but at dinner, a cohort of Cornell

students takes over and some don’t seem to be well-trained. Most of the student servers are enthusiastic and seem anxious to please, however at a recent dinner my server didn’t have a clue how to serve a bottle of wine.

This didn’t surprise me, as over the years I’ve ordered many bottles and students often aren’t familiar with proper wine service. In this case, instead of showing me the bottle and offering me a sample to sniff and taste, he filled the glass half full, much more than the normal sampling. After I tasted it and told him it was fine, instead of filling the glass, he turned and walked away. And though I poured myself small portions throughout the dinner, he never returned to fill my empty wine or water glasses.

I was confused about an entrée called, simply, “Duck” and asked if it was a leg, confit, sliced breast, half duck or something else.

He seemed to be evading my questions and finally confided: “Honestly, I have no idea.” I ordered the “duck” anyway and was rewarded with three large cuts from the breast which were perfectly seasoned and cooked medium rare as I had ordered it. Perhaps a meeting with the chefs before meal service could be helpful?

The dinner menu has four pasta dishes – all of which are hearty and tasty – and I have always enjoyed any other entrée I’ve tried.

An important issue with eating at Banfi’s is its lack of accessibility. As it is located in the Statler Hotel on the Cornell campus, there is no dedicated self-parking for guests. Valet parking is available at meal times but many people, including me, don’t like students driving my car and would like to avoid the extra charge for tipping. I queried the hotel car parkers and was advised that they won’t take the car unless you already have a reservation in the restaurant. They will, however, phone to make a reservation for you while you wait in your car. I also learned they expect $2-$5 for their service. Tipping, of course, is at your discretion, as Banfi’s offers free parking.

I like Taverna Banfi. The food is always fresh, well prepared, and attractively plated and presented. If you choose the buffets I think the prices are reasonable. And although groups of happy students can get noisy, the staff and the atmosphere are friendly and welcoming.

A look at Moosewood’s newest cookbook he Moose wood Re staurant Table, Mooswood ’s newest cookbook, hit the shelves this month. It features 250 new recipes, and a sleek hard copy.

The Ithaca Times staff, curious about new eats, tried out four different recipes: a starter, a soup, an entree and a dessert.

Starter: Butternut Squash Latkes

certainly won’t be a case of opposing f lavors clashing together.

It’s a bit labor intensive as well, and make sure you have an effective method of draining the shredded squash and onion mixture; I suspect my latkes turned out soggy because my initial draining was insufficient. But to add another benefit, despite the fancy-sounding names of some of the ingredients, rest assured this was all quite inexpensive, even for a millennial.

In closing, I would strongly suggest reading the entire recipe, not just the ingredients, before buying the requirements. Because that three-pound butternut squash was cool when I bought it, but far less so when it took 90 minutes for my hands and a cheese grater to reduce it to the necessary consistency.

This was not a particularly good dinner/ appetizer. I would only recommend it to others with the conditions under which I ate it, which is the same conditions under which I eat everything I cook: if the first bite is bland, or just purely bad, I immediately and unabashedly add garlic salt.

I’m sure after some repeated attempts, I could get the recipe down more exactly and learn my way around the nuances of butternut squash. But cooking it for the first time yielded a sort of soggy, dense block of food that, again, needed some sour cream and f lavor-blasting to be decent. As a caveat, I’m totally open to the interpretation that my negative experience stems from operator error.

Heating them up in a pan with some oil before serving is essential, even browning them just a tad can give the latkes a bit more flavor to toy around with. I imagine increasing the assorted spices the recipe calls for throughout the process — a dash of sage leaves, some pepper and salt all added prior to 25 minutes in the oven — would give the final product some boost. The good thing is there aren’t a lot of bold flavors in this recipe, which leaves some room for creativity. Squash isn’t exactly an overpowering vegetable, and for whatever reason it really smothered the onion taste almost entirely. That leaves some space for you to mess around with the spices and come out with something that appeals to you since it

I’ve been a vegetarian (pescatarian when someone else is paying) for almost 13 years now, so when I moved to Ithaca to attend school at Ithaca College, a copy of one of the numerous Moosewood cookbooks was the perfect parting gift from a good friend of mine.

When my parents would come to visit it was Moosewood that they wanted to take me to.

This restaurant, and their excellent vegetarian recipes, have been in my life for a very long time. So, I am a little embarrassed to say this is my first time trying a Moosewood recipe myself.

I chose t he Roasted Ca r rot Ga zpacho because I’ve had this cold soup numerous times and loved it every time. Also, it didn’t look terribly difficult. The recipe calls for four cups of carrots and I think I ended up with just a little less than four cups because I got tired of peeling and cutting them. Four cups of carrots is more carrots than you would expect — trust me. In the end I think this added to a thinner

soup than I had wanted, so if you like a thicker gazpacho then I hope you have more patience than I do.

While the carrots were roasting in the oven I had plenty of time to prep for the next step:

blending up the water, tomatoes, garlic, lemon juice (you could also use red wine vinegar but I already had lemons and I’m a girl on a budget), mint, cilantro, black pepper and some jalapeño.

Make sure you keep in mind that the soup has to chill for two hours in the fridge before being served. The actual making of the soup is quick, but chill time is much longer, so if you want to serve at 6 p.m. then the soup must be in the fridge at 4 p.m.

The flavor of the soup was tasty, but not very exciting. I didn’t get much kick from the jalapeño and I definitely skimped on the cilantro (again, girl on a budget), so if you’re into spicy food I would recommend upping the jalapeño and black pepper.

Overall the recipe was simple to follow, had minimal prep, and was the perfect way for me to catch up on a few podcasts I’ve been neglecting. Although fall is usually when cooks break out the pumpkin soups and squash bisques to stay toasty this has been an unusually warm fall so far, cold soup still counts as soup. The gazpacho keeps with the spirit of the season while still taking into account the unique circumstances. I give it a seven out of 10 and would probably make it again.

Entree: Vegan Cuban Picadillo

I’m not a master chef by any means, but I consider myself fairly competent. I can poach an egg — not consistently, but I can do it — I can safely cook a steak medium rare without having to slice it first to check, and I can make a pretty mean tomato sauce just by eyeballing the ingredients.

But on Sunday night, when I decided to cook a meal from this cookbook, I was thoroughly challenged.

For 45 minutes over a hot stove, I sliced and simmered my way through one of the more complicated feasts I’ve ever pulled together.

That’s not to say the payoff wasn’t worth it.

The food prep itself wasn’t too bad. Diced up the vegetables, mashed the tofu with my hands, got the sauce simmering. Frying the plantains was a stressful addition to the agenda — multiple steps and too small a pot to fry the lot O c tob e r

of them — but timed appropriately, this foray into this revered, traditional side dish went decidedly well. The rice, thankfully, was easy: just put it on and forget about it. (Looking at some of the more ambitious salads in the rest of the cookbook, I figured this would be the smartest route to go.)

Followed closely, the recipe ended in a delicious result: robust and savory, the dish that resulted was a rich cacophony that offered up the bold (olives) in perfect symphony with the underlying smokey smell of cumin and cinnamon over rich, plump raisins. Alongside a helping of fried plantains — perfectly crisp and chewy with a perfect balance of salty and sweet — the recipe led me down a path of endless delight that truly made the destruction of my small, galley-sized kitchenette totally worthwhile.

While this was one of the more complicated dishes offered in the new Moosewood cookbook, I found that

if working in a team, the assembly of such a dish would have gone much more smoothly, leaving me with less time frantically prepping other stages of the dish in order to keep the timing of each step on schedule. If doing this again, I probably would have picked an easier recipe, of which this cookbook offers many.

They came out to be a robust blend of flavors, satisfying my savory cravings and my sweet curiosity.

With prep times and bake times around 20 minutes each, the cookies are simple and quick: you don’t need to make an event out of these treats, and they can feasibly be done on a lazy weeknight.

I’ve never been clean in the kitchen, despite how many times I’ve been taught by my home-cook ing-ent husiast of a mother. But even with the messiest of cooks and the most disorderly of kitchens, peanut-ginger cookies can still be made with little commotion. The process begins with pulsing roasted peanuts and brown sugar in a food processor: the only complication here is being careful not to accidentally make peanut butter. After a simple stir of dry ingredients and then the wet, then the peanut mixture greets the others — followed by the minced ginger.

Then comes the tactile part: shaping tiny clumps into cookies. Bake until golden.

A lt hough simple, I did have a few gripes with the recipe. With Moosewood’s friendliness toward vegans, it’s curious as to why the only non-plant-based food is the egg in the recipe. Sure, vegans can easily substitute the egg with silken tofu, flax or any other favorite options, but none of these suggestions were made. It’s especially odd considering there’s only one egg in the whole recipe.

The cookies themselves crumble easily and are pretty dry, though that’s to be expected for “Sandies-type cookies” (as Moosewood calls them). If I’m going to indulge, I usually reach for a gooey-chocolate-chip type, but placed next to a cup of coffee or a mug of tea — now it’s a different, arguably more complete dessert. The cookies absorb hot drinks when dunked, and enhance the texture of the minced peanuts. Dunk away.

By themselves, the cookies reminded me of Southeast Asian foods: a pad thai cookie. Sweet with just the right hints of saltiness and the punchiness of the ginger, they encompass several types of complimentary flavors — a standalone hit.

Brahman/i tips hat to diverse gender expressions

laywright Aditi Brennan Kapil conjures an Indian-American intersex stand-up comedian from Athens, Georgia, in the Kitchen’s latest offering, the hilarious and incisive Brahman/i.

Kapil manages complex riffs on Hindu theology and mythology, gender dynamics, colonialism, sex, family and belonging while anchoring this mélange to a familiar setting: a story of growing up and not quite belonging, with a special crisis with the onset of puberty — fodder for many a stand-up routine.

Our comedian, B (Aila Peck), was born with both female and male genitalia. When B’s unconventional Auntie bursts into the hospital room, cooing over the newborn, but wondering if ‘“his” eyelashes are a bit too feminine, Auntie’s question of, “What is it?” is answered with “All-in-One” by the doctor, B jokes.

Raised first as a boy, Brahman (named for the Brahma, the Hindu god of creation)

yearns to be accepted by an older male Indian-American cousin and his two sidekicks, both blond himbos named Jeremy.

Overweight and unathletic, B inevitably ends up the football team’s water-boy through middle and high school. Naturally, B especially adores the team’s captain.

B’s other goal is to become cool as “B” rather than as “Brahman” — unfortunately B has been short-circuited by the two Susans at his school, differentiated by the initials of their last names, B and C. B does manage a shortening to “Brah.”

Then all hell breaks lose: puberty. B grows tits. One day B plays with putting on makeup and a sari, crossing from male to female, from Brahman to Brahmani. But what should B choose? Well the onrush of 14-year-old hormones demands info and B seeks out porn. The doctor too, is of no help.

Coming to B’s rescue is the half-scandalous Auntie, who tells the story of the hijra: India’s third-gender people. In the Ramayana, Auntie says, when the hero Rama

goes into his 14-year exile, the villagers follow him out into the forest. He bids the “men and women” go back to the village.

When he finally returns to the forest, the hijra are still there, neither men nor women.

So Rama elevates them, and the hijra get to bless weddings and funerals. (Hindu deities are notably gender-fluid themselves.)

Even more importantly, Auntie has a book of photos of a Hindu temple adorned with stone-relief carvings of all kinds of sex acts.

Sex and gender/colonial domination (especially of the British in India) are the subjects of B’s riffs into Hindu and “Western” mythology (Odysseus). We are also treated to an extensive and somewhat bawdy show and tell of the Hindu temple reliefs via overhead projector.

Peck invests B with warmth, bluster and sharp shifts in mood and temple as she builds the story (aided by M. Bevin O’Gara’s subtle direction.) Peck has an edgy relationship with her bass player sidekick, J, played with the stoicism of the ever-embattled servant to the master by Thom Dunn.

Justin and Christopher Swader have transformed the Kitchen space into a funky club-space, complete with hanging salon lamps, light strings, a battered tiled “stage” and tables and chairs in place of the first

Kapil penned Brahman/i as one part of her The Displaced Hindu Gods Trilogy: “three plays riffing on the three deities of the Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.” She believes “all immigrants engage in an act of re-mythologizing. We need stories to understand ourselves, both individually and in the context of society.”

The playwright’s neat trick is to place this re-mythologizing within a believable framework of B’s search for identity and belonging (much of it in the mode of U.S. child of immigrants comedy), while exploding the tyrannies visited by rigid gender codes and masculinist colonization.•

Let the Battle Begin

Battle of the Sexes captures iconuc tennis match

By Br yan VanC ampe n Battle of the Sexes, directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, playing at Cinemapolis. onathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’ Battle of the Sexes is inspired by the 1973 prime-time televised tennis match between Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell).

I’ll admit it: I was 10 years old in 1973, and unless it was an animated cartoon or a Planet of the Apes movie, I was probably not paying attention. Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs were just vague milemarkers to a dim kid like me. They were all mixed up with skateboards, f lared jeans and Elton John, a primordial pop stew that I couldn’t begin to comprehend. So if the tale of King and Riggs is also unfamiliar to you, don’t spoil the fun by reading up about their historic match on Wikipedia.

The film certainly fills in the gaps on two of the seminal pop-sports stars of the era, particularly Carell’s hilarious and revealing work as the sweaty, desperate gambling Riggs. It’s fascinating watching two people driven to succeed by completely unique needs in their personalities: Stone’s King wants to be the professional mature good girl, while Riggs’ outrageous theatrics and publicity stunts are rooted in his need to be seen as a winner.

Riggs challenged King by playing up his chauvinistic argument, even though his wealthy wife (Elisabeth Shue) bankrolled his entire tennis career. As much as Riggs needles King and her compatriots, Carell lets us see the gamblers’ need that drives him. Carell plays Riggs telling off people in a gamblers’ anonymous meeting for being bad gamblers; he lectures them on how he’s a good gambler. Meanwhile, King struggles with her marriage when she falls in love with her hairdresser Marilyn Barnett (Andrea Riseborough, trying to squelch her feelings in order to further her career. (In real life, Barnett was King’s secretary, so it’s unclear why her vocation was changed; in the film, it’s so that she can tour with King’s crew and do their hair.)

In a way, it’s a shame that the KingRiggs match takes up so much air in the story that it almost seems to diminish King’s other significant accomplishments. When the rich, white male sports establishment, led by the slimy and untouchable Jack Kramer (played by Bill Pullman) refuses to offer women players the same winnings as the men, King and her manager (Sarah Silverman) boycott the whole thing and partner with Virginia Slims cigarettes to start her own

This is one of those movies that’s not just set in the ’70s, but looks like a relic from the era. Certainly the institutional sexism and withering condescension that

King has to deal with is a shock to the system, even now when the president talks about grabbing women’s body parts and Mitch McConnell treats Elizabeth Warren like an exile from the He-Men Women Hater’s Club. Even King’s father, seen as being supportive, makes a crack about not being dumb enough to try and separate a woman from her hairdresser. Yeesh. Get with it, guys.

The film is a reunion for Carell and Stone — who acted together in Crazy. Stupid. Love — as well as with the filmmakers; Dayton and Faris directed Carell as Frank in Little Miss Sunshine. In addition to their music video work with bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Dayton and Faris also

I was taking a cartooning class at IHS in the late ‘70s and one of my assignments was to create a cover for an ethnic joke book, which were all the rage back then. Unthinkable today, perhaps, but political correctness hasn’t quite managed to kill ethnic humor. CRT Downtown in Cortland presents an “Italian Comedy Festa” on Saturday, October 19 at 7:30, starring Italian-American comics Johnny Rizzo and Liz Russo.

Johnny Rizzo got into comedy during the late ‘70s humor boom, when SNL and SCTV and Monty Python and Robin Williams and Steve Martin were treated like rock stars. He says that getting into comedy is “selfish, because you’re performing by yourself, you’re not in an ensemble. Unlike when you were a kid, and you were told to shut up and go to your room, now as an adult people will

need your help! No monsters or spooky noises and all the lights are on for this kid-friendly event.

Rizzo has headlined across the country in some of the most popular clubs including The Bitter End in NYC, the Borgota Casino in Atlantic City, the Riviera and Sun Coast casinos in Las Vegas and at all the major comedy clubs, including the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

He has opened for such superstars as Jay Leno, Richard Belzer, Dennis Miller, Tommy Chong, Joan Rivers, “Weird” Al Yankovic, Ray Charles, Little Anthony and the Imperials, The Mamas and the Papas, Pat Cooper and Henny Youngman.

“Ethnic humor is stronger than ever,” he says. “You have Latin comedy nights, you have various comedy nights.

They even have the funniest lawyer night. These themes were always kind of popular and now they tend to be more popular, which I don’t subscribe to. I think funny is funny.”

There’s no hard feelings at all. Rizzo says, “I don’t mind doing these shows, but you don’t have to be Italian to get it.”

It’s true: even though I wasn’t raised Catholic and didn’t go to Catholic school.

I always thought George Carlin did a great job mining his own background for comedy and making concepts like nuns relatable to a lapsed Baptist like myself.

“If you look at [my] entire set, there’s probably three to five minutes about being Italian,” says Rizzo, “but it’s material that everyone can relate to. Everybody

I was taking a cartooning class at IHS in the late ‘70s and one of my assignments was to create a cover for an ethnic joke book, which were all the rage back then. Unthinkable today, perhaps, but political correctness hasn’t quite managed to kill ethnic humor. CRT Downtown in Cortland presents an “Italian Comedy Festa” on Saturday, October 19 at 7:30, starring Italian-American comics Johnny Rizzo and Liz Russo.

Johnny Rizzo got into comedy during the late ‘70s humor boom, when SNL and SCTV and Monty Python and Robin Williams and Steve Martin were treated like rock stars. He says that getting into comedy is “selfish, because you’re performing by yourself, you’re not in an ensemble. Unlike when you were a kid, and you were told to shut up and go to your room, now as an adult people will

need your help! No monsters or spooky noises and all the lights are on for this kid-friendly event.

Rizzo has headlined across the country in some of the most popular clubs including The Bitter End in NYC, the Borgota Casino in Atlantic City, the Riviera and Sun Coast casinos in Las Vegas and at all the major comedy clubs, including the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

He has opened for such superstars as Jay Leno, Richard Belzer, Dennis Miller, Tommy Chong, Joan Rivers, “Weird” Al Yankovic, Ray Charles, Little Anthony and the Imperials, The Mamas and the Papas, Pat Cooper and Henny Youngman.

“Ethnic humor is stronger than ever,” he says. “You have Latin comedy nights, you have various comedy nights.

They even have the funniest lawyer night. These themes were always kind of popular and now they tend to be more popular, which I don’t subscribe to. I think funny is funny.”

There’s no hard feelings at all. Rizzo says, “I don’t mind doing these shows, but you don’t have to be Italian to get it.”

It’s true: even though I wasn’t raised Catholic and didn’t go to Catholic school.

I always thought George Carlin did a great job mining his own background for comedy and making concepts like nuns relatable to a lapsed Baptist like myself.

“If you look at [my] entire set, there’s probably three to five minutes about being Italian,” says Rizzo, “but it’s material that everyone can relate to. Everybody
