After feedback from the city’s Planning and Development Board urged for more “creativity” in the building’s design, the architects of the proposed City Centre project planned for downtown’s most intriguing corner have turned in a significantly-tuned up proposal.

Shying away from the monolitic reaches of previous proposals, City Centre’s State Street facade now boasts a jagged crown opening onto a rooftop patio, a changeup from the originally-pitched strong lines of the building’s profile.

In doing so, the building has shrunk yet again: Once proposed to be nine stories tall (still miniscule compared to the originally-planned 11 proposed by an Austin, Texas-based developer last year) the new proposal counts just eight stories, holding approximately 193 beds.

However smaller, it’s still shorter than the zoned limits for the site, at 106 feet.

This is a bit of a departure from the original plans. Though it will still have the 70-space underground parking lot, nearly 60 beds have been lopped off the top of the structure, to comply with the requests of the city planning board. Yet, even though it’s smaller than the original proposal, at an estimated $32.9 million, it is nearly $3 million more than the original, larger structure.

The developer, Vestal-based Newman Development, will be applying for tax abatements.

Jeff Smetana, the Vice President of Newman Development, which is working on the site, said he doesn’t expect the changes to affect the viability of the project’s finances.

In the most recent study of the city’s housing market, it was determined that a third of the city’s demand for rental housing is for high-end or luxury apartments. City Centre will fulfill that desire.

“What we’re looking to do is to try to provide rental options that are more accessible for more renters,” Smetana said.

Moving forward with the project, the developer still needs to pitch the new aesthetic of the building to the city decision makers but, as things stand, Smetana said excitement is mounting.

Businesses both local and national have been lobbying for the commercial space on the ground floor, one of which could be introduced soon.

24 beds proposed for Ithaca College faculty South Hill remain at-odds

odern Living Rentals is seeking to build a small, 24 unit duplex development on Ithaca’s South Hill.

Planned for 607 S. Aurora St., the development will consist of four twostory duplexes, with each building including six bedrooms.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be $1.5 million, according to documents filed with the city.

The plot is currently home to a wooden house situated right beside South Hill Elementary School.

Anticipated completion date, if approved, is March 2017.

Zerilli, who rides an electric bicycle from South Hill to Lansing every day for work, initially thought the long delay in her appointment might be a sign that BPAC members didn’t want her to join the committee.

“At first, it mattered to me quite a bit,” she said. Zerilli said she began asking herself. “Do these people want me here? Should I not come?”

It was only once David West, the BPAC chair, told Zerilli that he wanted her to join the committee, but was waiting on the Mayor’s approval, that she felt more comfortable at meetings. The group started also began entering her contributions into the meeting minutes and took her unofficial votes into consideration.

West said he met with Myrick earlier in September and that the Mayor promised to expedite Zerilli’s appointment.

“I don’t believe that BPAC consolidation is being considered, I think we just got rolled under the blanket no new appointments idea,” West wrote in an email. “It’s unfortunate that there has been so much delay because once an appointment [is] put on the agenda they are generally rubber stamped by [Common Council] with little or no discussion” he added. “It is definitely a process that can and should go much more smoothly.”

Discussions broke down at a meeting of the two parties on Sept. 23 after, according to a news release from the Contingent Faculty Union Bargaining Committee, the administration had come to the table “completely unprepared to bargain.”

Unionized as of May 24, Ithaca College’s contingent faculty have been pursuing counterproposals on faculty compensation, job security or longer term appointments for over a month.

Myrick said that he made appointments this year to committees that weren’t making quorum, as well as committees like the Board of Public Works that will definitely not be restructured, but held off on committees that the working group thought might be combined.

As the working group fell behind schedule and appointments continued to be delayed, Zerilli and others waiting to be appointed could not officially vote and had no more power than if they were attending meetings as members of the public.

Larry Beck, who chairs the Rental Housing Advisory Commission, said that one member, Denise Thompson, Off-Campus Living Manager for Cornell, regularly attended meetings during the eight months that she waited to be appointed after applying to join the RHAC in February.

George McGonigal, First Ward alderperson, appeared frustrated at September’s City Administration Committee meeting as he said several boards were not able to function and that he had reached out to Myrick multiple times over the delay.

In a statement, Ithaca College wrote the union would not be honoring upcoming negotiation sessions on Oct. 12 and Oct.24. The union, meanwhile, said it would be holding protest events up to and including an event with the college’s Board of Trustees on Oct. 19.

Mohlenhoff, who chairs the City Administration Committee in addition to leading the working group, said the appointment process is “problematic” because all of the appointments must be made by Myrick. (The Mayor’s appointments then must be approved by Common Council, which almost always votes unanimously to approve.)

“One of the things we’re discovering is, is it the best system to have all of the appointments recruited, vetted and appointed by the Mayor?” Mohlenhoff said. “The volume of the collective committees is a lot of appointments. I’m not sure where it gets backlogged, but it does.”

At the Oct. 5 Common Council meeting, Myrick presented the three appointments — as well as nine reappointments — to Common Council, which unanimously approved. The longest part of the process was reading the resolution.

Fixing a broken testing system As we begin a new school year and start preparing for another round of Proficiency Testing throughout New York State, we feel compelled to share some thoughts and reflections on the process. As principals from small school districts, we have the opportunity to be closely involved with all aspects of testing. From our observations and experience, we fear the rationale for testing is severely flawed. We are investing a tremendous amount of time, energy, and funding into an assessment system which has gained very little support from parents, politicians and educators.

In our opinion, the fiscal and logistical cost of testing vastly outweighs the return on investment.

As the opt-out movement has gained momentum, we have had little success in convincing parents that the benefits of testing outweigh the loss of instructional time. The modest changes made in the testing format has had little impact on parental opinion of testing.

What is equally troubling is that we are also recognizing a growing apathy in test performance effort from students who have not opted out of the testing.

Our own Congressman, Tom Reed, has been outspoken in his support of the opt out movement, sharing “I support the right of parents to make decisions

regarding the education of their children.” The Chancellor of the NYS Board of Regents Betty Rosa has also stated that “she would opt her child out of the state’s exams -- if she had a child that age and she were not a Regent.” With so many conflicting opinions at the Federal, State and local levels, how can we possibly be expected to gain any positive momentum by following the same course?

Considering there are approximately 50 million students in the United States, the cost of testing is equal to approximately $320 per student.To put this in perspective, the Candor School District receives $79 per student in library/software/textbook aid. This is four times less than the cost of testing our students! It makes us question the politics behind the testing, but we will table this discussion for another time.

It is clear we believe change needs to be made in testing policy in New York State. Students in grades 3-8 are tested too often, the tests are too long, and the benefits are too little. High school students in New York State take multiple high stakes Regents exams required for graduation, and each exam can be completed in one day. Stewart Ave stabbing suspect makes bail

K

haliq Gale, who is facing a felony assault charge for allegedly stabbing a man in the leg in Ithaca, posted bail on Saturday and was released from Tompkins County Jail .

A corrections officer at the jail said Gale, 21, was released at 2:41 p.m. on Saturday after either paying $1,000 in bail or putting up a $2,000 property bond.

Gale was booked into the jail 24 hours earlier after he turned himself into the Ithaca Police Department on Friday accompanied by his attorney , Seth PeaKhaliq Gale cock. Police had identified Gale earlier in the week as the sole suspect in the stabbing of a 27year-old Dryden man on Ithaca’s Stewart Avenue bridge on Sept. 28.

Ideally, we should move away from mandated paper and pencil or computer-based assessments, and instead trust our educators to provide opportunities for students to demonstrate proficiency through student projects & work portfolios. These projects and work portfolios could be evaluated using a common rubric, one that students and educators could see ahead of time, and one that would allow NYSED to determine student performance across subgroups.

This would more accurately measure the depth and breadth of student skills acquisition and college and career readiness.

We understand a transition such as this is unlikely at this time. Since NYS testing policy is tied to Federal legislation (including the newly approved ESSA) and current State legislation, there are certain requirements that must be met in order to be in compli-

This would increase student accountability and eliminate the opt out issue. Teachers would develop tests and get them approved by local administration and regional (BOCES) Math and ELA experts. The state should allow schools to report results of student achievement on these tests based on a rubric they develop with guidance from area BOCES experts. This would allow teachers the opportunity to directly participate in the construction of the assessment which will be utilized to generate their APPR score. Hopefully this can reduce some of the anxiety associated with tying students test scores to teacher evaluation.

A plan such as this would save tens of millions of dollars in printing and shipping costs, not to mention the millions in employee hours. It would also allow the state to show some trust in local administration and BOCES officials to do their jobs in a way that works for their schools. General information about student achievement gleaned from this system would be much more beneficial than the worthless data currently being

Because the building did not receive a pair of $500,000 Restore NY Grants due to some uncertainty with whether or not the project would meet the grant’s criteria, the developer is now working out a financing package to pay for the demolition before seeking the permit.

As for where the site’s progress stands now, the developer is working on staging plans with the city and prospects for construction to begin next year are promising. As for whether or not demolition will begin this fall?

Yet environmentalists and corporate skeptics have stepped up as of late to oppose the project.

Some, ignoring the Cayuga Salt Mine operates under its own budget, have doubts corporate is unable to step in and cover some of the costs, arguing the shaft should not be granted a tax abatement.

t the surface, it’s a no-brainer: a town’s biggest taxpayer and most significant employer, a “good corporate citizen” and a pillar of the community it resides in, wants a rather miniscule tax abatement to continue to grow.

But, almost too appropriately for a salt mine where the brunt of operations take place thousands of feet underground, it’s what the public hasn’t seen or heard that’s been causing problems in Lansing lately.

As the mine’s expanse has spread beneath Cayuga Lake over the years, the mine has become faced with a choice: to build a new shaft and continue operating in compliance with federal mining regulation, or to abandon the mine within the next decade.

Mine management chose the former.

Even before the mine’s first serious incident in years, Cargill has been in the process of planning the new shaft for almost four years. The project’s timeline began with the $650,000 purchase of a 57 acre plot at 1001 Ridge Rd. in the spring of 2012,

tax abatement for the project on Friday, a group of environmentalists led by local environmental planner and environmental management council committee member John Dennis signed up to comment for three minutes, where–citing a paper they had commissioned on the potential environmental issues on the project–the group attempted to outline some of the issues a new shaft would create.

Due to the meeting’s format, litle new information could be presented: just issues with the tax abatement the company was requesting.

“I thought that the public hearing provided more residents an opportunity to learn about this proposed project,” Brian Eden, a local environmentalist, wrote in an email. “Until the legislature’s meeting last week there had been no reporting in the public domain. Despite a pitch to develop an IDA process that would encourage broader dialog on such issues, the public hearing was a mere formality.”

The main concern? According to Warren’s findings, the vertical distance separating the top of the salt and the lowest depth of Cayuga Lake above it could potentially be less than a safe distance of 200 meters.

The DEC gave the Cargill project a Determination of non-significance on June 30 and has had no public meetings outside of IDA proceedings in the months since.

Given that each person at Friday’s public hearing was given so little time to speak, Dennis was asked to stop midway through a presentation meant to highlight the most important aspects of Warren’s 30page report.

Others are upset about the lack of a locally commissioned environmental review, even though the state is currently conducting its own.

But some are now questioning some of the information they haven’t seen: namely, the safety of the mine itself as it continues burrowing into the northern reserves.

An Ithaca High School alum finds his way on the tc3 men’s soccer roster.

ver the years, I have put forth a sincere effort to share the love, so to speak. I try to write about men, women, young people, not so young people, Cornell, Ithaca College, Ithaca High School, and TC3.

People are likely aware that the “C” in

TC3 stands for “Community,” and there have been times when I explored a story idea, looked at a Panther roster, and saw not one person from our community.

Don’t get me wrong… I am well aware that a coach’s job is not to fill a roster with local players, it is to assemble the best team

from the students enrolled at the college, but this is, after all, the Ithaca Times.

When checking out the Panthers’ website recently, I was pleased to see that one of the players putting up points for the soccer team is Jared Brooks, Ithaca High class of 2016.

He was an integral part of a dominant team that won backto-back STAC and Sectional titles and ran roughshod over the competition as the state’s top-ranked team before an unexpected loss to Ballston Spa.

I have known Jared since he was a pre-schooler, as his parents and I are pals, and his sister, Marley (Ithaca High 2012) was a fine soccer player as well. I asked Jared to describe the biggest adjustment he has faced as a college player. “In high school,” he said, “I had been playing with those guys since we were 7 or 8 years old.

Playing with different teammates is an adjustment, for sure.”

The learning curve is not too much of an obstacle, however. “College players want to be here, everyone is serious, so it’s not that hard to form a connection,” Brooks told me. “In high school, given that we all grew up together, we knew each other on a different level, but everybody has the same desire to be here so we’re adjusting.”

I asked Jared about the difference in the travel schedules, and he said “In high school, during the regular season we’d travel to Corning, or Vestal. It was about an hour each way. Now, we’re playing at Erie Community College, Niagara and some of our trips are 4 hours away.” He added, “It’s good that 5 to 10 hours on the bus gives us a lot of ‘team time,’ but if we lose the trip feels longer.” He laughed and said, “We do get to watch a lot of movies.”

While Brooks is playing with many unfamiliar players, the Panther roster does feature another former Little Red player. Salko Camo is a sophomore, and the two Ithaca High alums spend a fair amount on the field at the same time.

I asked Jared if most of the players at TC3 are working toward playing at 4-year colleges, and he offered, “I’d say about half of my teammates are looking to play at the next level. I took a serious look at going to Ithaca College -and I got in - but I made the decision to start out here based on finances.” He added, “I am definitely happy to be here. We get our laundry done, we get fed…” He laughed again and said, “It definitely feels like you’re playing a college sport!”

Brooks hopes to follow through on the Ithaca College plan, although he is looking at other options. He wants to stay in the area, and SUNY Cortland has also rolled across Jared’s radar.

All things considered, Brooks is pleased with his decision, and he is ready to dig in and help the Panthers “win out” and get to the post-season. The team had somewhat of a slow start, but they have come together and now control their own destiny.

For others looking to keep operating at full capacity with current staffing levels, Tavares said, the ones who would be shouldering most of the change would be the taxpayers.

Tavares said many of the anecdotes she hears on wage increases often relate to the impact of more money in circulation; more money equals more cups of coffee, more sandwiches, more haircuts, all which work their way back to the employer. For nonprofits, the revenue side often won’t be so responsive to the assumed economic impact raised wages would have.

“There are a lot of jobs that are taxpayer supported, whether in municipal or school jobs,” Tavares said. “For nonprofit organizations, some money

There’s going to be some hard choices for some businesses.”

For for-profit businesses, it’s about finding ways to increase revenues to support an increased budget line. Simply stated: $10,000 in increased salary costs to beat the threshold means $10,000 in new revenues need to be created, not counting the expenses incurred to build structures able to acquire this additional income.

“You might think it’s a couple thousand dollar problem,” Tavares said.

“But this could become a $10,000 or even $30,000 problem for some businesses. It’s hard to make this new revenue happen so quickly.”

Starting December 1, some employers more time to work out a strategy to cope with the changes. Meanwhile, the Chamber of Commerce is working on laying the groundwork for an educational session

here are a few facts of life in Ithaca that we acknowledge as common knowledge. Gorges are grey, the sky is blue and there aren’t enough places to live downtown.

In fact, the latest housing demand study conducted by the Danter Company

shows exactly how large the shortfall really is. Over the next five years, market demand is projected to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,300 units by 2021.

Wilczynski argued the mine already pays its fair share of taxes. Due to the company’s location on the map and the unique nature of its product line, some camps would consider Cargill a blessing: in the cold, snowy climate of upstate New York, Tompkins County pays the cheapest salt prices in New York State, $10 cheaper per ton on average than its competitors.

Yet the basic economics of the salt mining business are also at play here.

The abatement-supported improvements won’t necessarily increase productivity or production, even if Cargill wanted to: it would only saturate the market, driving down the price of salt. McDaniel said because of this, TCAD wasn’t necessarily providing an abatement to improve Cargill’s bottom line; it was to insure the company can cover its costs against its revenues.

“I’ve seen a lot of the comments—yes they’ll be able to increase productivity—but that doesn’t mean they’re going to be able to increase production,” McDaniel said.

“Production is based on demand. They can only produce as much as they need. If they produce too much, they’ll drive down the price of salt. That’s basic economics. They’re not increasing revenues.”

Maintaining jobs is just as important as creating jobs, McDaniel said. Moving forward with business as usual, the same expectation of healthy profits will exist from year to year. McDaniel said making the argument to make to a large company like Cargill with multiple corporate interests to fund a project like this is difficult to do and to make the case the project is worth funding, TCAD needs to show the parent company there is local support for the project.

Yet, for the 200 or so that work there and the countless thousands of winter drivers, Wilczynski paints a more urgent picture.

“There’s a lot at stake,” Wilczynski said.

While it’s very late in the game, Dennis still has hope the DEC would be forced to recind its ruling on the project’s environmental impact statement, at least until it is confirmed a proper seismic survey has been produced proving there is no potential to breach the aquifer level.

However, he said he’s less than optimistic due to the “bureacratic inclinations” that would prevent them with revisiting the approval process. Given the time constraints of the project, the likelihood is even further reduced.

As for the finances, the Tompkins County IDA is expected to vote on whether or not to grant final approval for the tax abatement at its upcoming meeting Thursday, October 13.

Opportunities taken mean success for one of the Commons’ newest faces

W

hen Linsey Barone was looking for a place to open her second boutique, she found herself torn between two cities: Ithaca or Corning, with its Gaffer District.

After opening shop on the Commons, Grover is of the sentiment the city’s pedestrian mall was the right fit for the distinct vibe exuded by her Linsey Layne boutique, saying three months in, she already feels immersed in the local business community.

The foot traffic she’s gotten hasn’t hurt either and, after Applefest Weekend, she’s sure she’s made the right choice.

“It was so busy,” Barone said. “I wish we did that every weekend. The energy downtown was so good.”

It’s quite a changeup from New Hartford (near Utica), where Barone opened her first store in 2013 and, in a way, an affirmation that the risk she took three years ago was the right decision. For five years after graduating from SUNY Oneonta in 2006 with a degree in biology, Barone worked

as a scientist, her home in research rather than retail. It was a place she’d arrived to after coming to a fork in the road in high school, where she had to choose between her two loves: science and fashion.

“I literally had two avenues to go down,” Barone said. “I thought I would have more a chance making more money, being more successful, if I went with the science path. I always made jewelry on the side, kind of for fun, as my hobby.”

But it was in 2011 when her son Layne was born that things changed in her life.

Layne was born more than two months early, with a rare genetic disorder called Prader-Willi Syndrome. After being in the intensive care unit three months, she made the decision to quit her job and pursue her other passion in life which allowed her to stay home with her son.

cal storefront to house her inventory.

In 2013, much fanfare from the New Hartford Chamber of Commerce, she opened her first store, a setting grounded in a bohemian, “free spirited” atmosphere.

An over-the-top decor, subtle industrial design cues and other unique touches, from the faux animal skin rugs to the excessive number of chandeliers hanging from the ceiling give the room a unique feel, offering a mood that offers something slightly different from the rest of the storefronts on the Commons.

Despite the narrow facade of the store that makes it hard to notice, Barone said it’s the bold personality exuded by the store that makes it a truly unique addition to the

Commons.

“I was definitely trying to go for something more free-spirited,” she said.

Her ideas applied in New Hartford proved well-suited for Ithaca and now, have proven a successful venture.

Barone has thusfar embraced the highenergy environment of the city’s small business community. Already well-immersed despite in-commuting from Norwich every day, she takes a certain joy in being able to recommend good places to eat, other places to shop or even, the best cup of coffee.

(She’s partial to Wafflefrolic.)

As for the next step? She’s looking to hire and is planning on being an active participant in Wizarding Weekend.

Prunty serves on the board as the representative for Ithaca College, where he has served as the college’s Executive Director of Auxiliary Services for the past two years.

Previous to his current position, David Prunty he held a variety of roles at Ithaca College in the divisions of Student Affairs and Campus Life and Finance and Administration.

Prunty said he became part of the board to further build the college’s positive relationship with downtown.

“Through my various roles on campus, I have worked for many years with staff from the DIA, arranging events for the Ithaca College student population as well as special events for some of our larger visiting conferences.

“We know that the IC students ‘see’ downtown Ithaca as ‘their city,’ and spend a great deal of time downtown.

Sanaker is the General Manager of Buffalo Asha Sanaker Street Books in the Dewitt Mall. Before becoming the GM of Buffalo Streets Books in 2013, Sanaker was the Finance Manager at GreenStar Natural Food Market for seven years.

Sanaker is the board’s treasurer, a replacement for Brett Pennefeather who left the board earlier this year after leaving his position at M&T Bank.

Sanaker said she joined the DIA

board to boost the level of merchant representation in the group.

New CCO musical director believes in community

I

n Switzerland, everyone learns to play the recorder when they are seven. At eight years old, they get to choose the instrument that they want to play. I wanted to play the flute, but because I had a piano at home I had to take piano.”

That was how Cornelia Laemmli Orth, the newly appointed musical director of the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, began her musical career. She went on to earn her Lehrdiplom in piano from the Conservatory at Winterhur, eventually graduating from the Conservatory and University in Zurich with her Masters in Music Education and Choral Conducting. She came to the United States to obtain her Masters in Orchestra Conducting from Northwestern University, where she studied under Victor Yampolsky.

When I spoke to her, she told me that she was grateful that she stumbled upon the piano.

I asked her if she learned to play the flute later in life. She said yes, but she does not think that the flute would have led to a musical career.

Maestro Orth will conduct her first concert with the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra Sunday, Nov. 6 at 4 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church in Ithaca. The program, “Music Through the Ages”, will feature a Suite for Violin and Double Bass by Gliere, Haydn’s “Emperor” Quartet, and Nielsen’s Wind Quintet.

The search for a new Music Director was a two-year process for the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, involving the review of 85 applications. After narrowing it down to four candidates, each were invited to Ithaca for a week long interview/audition process with CCO Executive Director Sheila Ossit. During their visit, each candidate participated in meet

and greets, in-school visits with local schools, events with donors and CCO subscribers, sit-downs with a board/search committee luncheon and a pre-concert chat. Finally, they rehearsed and conducted a concert featuring a symphonic masterwork and a concerto with a soloist in their 2015-2016 season, each work chosen by the programming committee. To show they were capable of taking the reins, each candidate was asked to select a short opening work to demonstrate their programming ability. Feedback was collected from hundreds of surveys from the audience, in-depth evaluations forms from our musicians, and assessments from members of the search committee.

Orth said she knew of Ithaca because several people who lived and played near her home in Tennessee had moved to Ithaca or the surrounding areas. She is also friends with William Pelto, Dean of the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University and former Associate Dean of the School of Music at Ithaca College. She was attracted to the position with the CCO because of the high quality of music being produced by the group and it’s philosophy of outreach and education in the community. In March, Orth conducted a program from the Viennese classical period— an overture by Schubert, the Haydn Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major with soloist Clive Greensmith, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 in B-flat major. Orth told me that after her week in Ithaca last March she felt inspired by the orchestra and the talented musicians. She said that she found the community interesting and she felt very comfortable here. Upon her return home she told people “If it doesn’t T

happen, I will never forget it.”

“Now of course,” she says, “I am very excited.”

Orth will continue to live in Northeast Tennessee. After completing her degree at Northwestern University in 2002, she was appointed the associate conductor of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, later becoming the principal guest conductor.

“Now,” she said. “I am still here.”

In fact, she is entering her 11th season as Musical Director of the Symphony of the Mountains. She said it will be a challenge to manage two orchestras separated by 650 miles.

She said she is very “hands on” at Symphony of the Mountains and admitted that her role here is going to be slightly different. She told me that she was here for a week in June and met a lot of people and made a lot of contacts. She is coming back in November for ten days and her schedule will keep her busy from 7 a.m. to midnight. She is also planning on coming back several times during the year when there are not concerts to prepare for to work on programming and such things.

As for the changes she hoped to make, she replied that she did not know at this time, saying she wasn’t familiar enough with the organization or the community to be able to determine this yet. She hoped to maintain and uphold the high musical standard the orchestra has established over the years. She continued on page 25

rintmaker, photographer, graphic designer: Craig Mains is one of the Ink Shop’s most distinctive artistic voices, a vital behind-the-scenes force in keeping the volunteer run cooperative running.

Mains is the studio’s director, as well as their exhibition and publications designer.

He’s best known locally for his innovative, droll monotypes. These combine a stencil technique with painterly handling and a narrative imagination fixated on the manmade environment befallen with disasters.

He’s also an inveterate experimentalist, pushing his work beyond the picture into interactivity and multi-media collaboration.

Last year, he presented his collection “Time/Manner/Place,” a selection of his lesser-seen digital photographs at the Community School of Music and Arts.

(Mains has a degree in photography from the Cleveland Institute of Art and his CSMA show originated at BayArts in the same city, where it was assembled by friend Preston Buchtel.)

Accompanying the opening was a musical interpretation of his work, recorded by local musician Billy Coté. The pair have something in common: Like Mains, Coté is an employee of the Cornell library system.

Coté, a veteran of the nineties altrock group Madder Rose, relocated to Ithaca from New York City about fifteen years ago. Since then, he has concentrated on film soundtracks and collaborations with various local musicians—his former bandmate Mary Brett Lorson among them.

Playing guitar and electronic keyboards, much of his work has taken on a more harmonically complex, even ambient direction.

For the past year, Coté and Mains have been working together with a new collaborator, poet and speculative fiction novelist Jon Frankel, also of the Cornell libraries. The three embarked upon a multidisciplinary version of the old Surrealist parlor game Exquisite Corpse, in which one artist extrapolates on the preceding work of another without seeing the whole. The results of this ambitious collaboration is on view this month at the Ink Shop, located on the second floor of CSMA. “36 Transitions” is divided into six sections (“A” through “F”), each in six parts: the first two begin with poems, the next two with music, and the final two with images. Frankel’s typeset poems (most are untitled) and Mains’ monotypes (all untitled) are presented behind Plexiglas on little shelves while Coté’s looping snippets of music play on iPod shuffles with attached headphones. You could take in the whole thing in the prescribed order or dive in at

random.

Starting at the beginning, the exhibit opens on a provocative note: “One God/Is one god/Too many”--or so writes Frankel, whose imagery here tends toward the dark and the surreal, even apocalyptic. Coté’s music emphasizes synth/keyboard timbres and odd electronic noises, with occasional guitar and percussion—even in one piece, Lorson’s scattered wordless vocals.

Many of the “transitions” defy literalness or apparent logic, frustrating any expectation of clear-cut continuity.

My overall sense, taking in the whole thing, is of three artists furrowing similar but distinctly divergent territories. Mains’ pieces in particular recycle iconography

that he has worked extensively in recent years—most striking among these a roller coaster, surrounded by the sea following Hurricane Sandy.

One striking exception begins with Frankel: “Loud/The slamming doors/ Keep out the crowd.” It’s followed by one of my favorite of Mains’ prints here, an off-kilter aerial floor plan with arcs and circles suggesting, yes, doors opening and shutting. Coté’s music contributes skittering percussion more akin to tapping toes—still an interesting feat of synesthesia.

On the whole Mains’ images here are not amongst his strongest. Fortunately, the Ink Shop is showing an abundance of Mains’ prints in an informal continuation of their September print sale. A group of larger, previously seen prints hang downstairs in the CSMA’s back corridor while other mostly smaller ones can be viewed upstairs.

Still, it’s difficult not to admire the ambition and care put into this unusual presentation. So too, there is a palpable energy being generated by this meeting of kindred sensibilities working in their different modes—modes with their own, too-often segregated audiences. •

A Spirit From Beyond

long the deep gravitational space corridors of existential stardust, included within the parameters is that which sparks true magic, a kind of wizardry and refined stroke that cross celestial bodies lengthwise, widthwise, and whole-wise.

Where and how do you catch this muse? What shape does its main section look like; its head, its inner spirit? For some artists the great divide is crossed quietly, walking steps across small hills. For others– the very few–it’s through an unimaginable mountainous region, across a dimension of vast space and time, alchemy and vision.

Count jazz vocalist and bassist Esperanza Spalding among the latter. A gigantic talent who has captivated many with her amazingly expressive and personal style, Spalding had, through her first four records, created a singular and dynamic range of music. Her jazz records traveled

through a plethora of forms: Cuban, soul, Brazilian, Bossa nova, R&B, and fusion.

But it wasn’t until she was visited by a particular spirit, that she able to grasp the infinite. Her newest album, the progressive behemoth Emily’s D+Evolution, is a step beyond. An alchemic revelation about a spirit, aspect, or alter ego named Emily that Spalding met, the album forges jazz-fusion, art rock, progressive rock, math groove, soul, and hard-hitting funk in a way only the fourth dimension could administer. It’s galactic, lush, and wonderfully complex.

“All the songs came from Emily, her spirit and mind,” Spalding recently told me. “This powerful and creative organism came to me and I knew I needed to strive to express this specific character. I’m very aware of embodying her; she has her own personality, her own style. I’m conscious of that. I knew there was a real dynamic story from Emily’s presence, and you know, the mind does the math, and I was able to create her vision.”

Before the awakening, Spalding felt stifled in many ways: stuck, and creatively

boxed. She had ridden a wave of fame, she said, to a place that wasn’t particularly fulfilling. A visitation from Emily gave her the chance to unlock the power and magic of a special universe: a thousand light years away, an eternal voice.

“I had to get away from what I was doing,” Spalding said. “I was tired of all the nonmusical crap I was invested in.

Soaring Through New Realms Progressive musician finds a higher ground

showcases the stark and glowing dynamics of the musician’s fluxing patterns.

The band’s most recent record An Epic Battle Between Light and Dark is a deep meditation on form and structure. A dazzlingly progressive record that sways in lush beauty and mysterious gloom, the album spins continuously towards originality and will have you tranced and dreaming through a cyclone of vision: the magic, the steep lulls, the acid highs and the eternity.

Hamilton and crew are at an artistic peak: showcasing a real and genuine expression. I caught up with the musician recently and we talked about some stuff.

he prolific songwriter, producer, and musician Tom Hamilton Jr. is a creature of intense propulsion. elements, do you feel like the juxtaposition between forms makes the overall wholeness that much deeper?

Tom Hamilton: Well yea, that sounds good. At the very least, I think it’s interesting and not too derivative. With so many folks making music these days and drawing from similar wells, it’s harder and harder to find unique sounds and points of view. That’s an end-goal that’s most important to me.

Sometimes I hit it and sometimes not, and that’s the rub. That challenge will always be there like a dangling carrot, which is what keeps me coming back.

IT: Your latest album An Epic Battle Between Light and Dark feels progressive in nature. Was there a certain aesthetic you were looking for during the writing process?

TH: At the beginning, my writing partner, Peter Tramo and I would go into the studio for eight to ten hour days but we wouldn’t really play anything. We’d just hang out and talk a lot. This went on for the first few weeks, maybe a month? We grew up in the same west Philadelphia neighborhood, so we would talk about our youth: past relationships, our folks, the state of music, and what it meant to us to be in our 30’s.

Eventually we had a vibe and a general understanding of what was on the table and what wasn’t, and then we started making noise.

IT: The new album also has a sort of dichotomy to it. I suppose that’s where the title came from. Does darkness and light exist wholly because of each other?

TH: There’s certainly a yin-yang in life and the universe, but the particular focus for this album was the day-to-day struggle steeped out of experiences with depression and mental illness. How those opposing light and dark emotional forces fight over real estate in your mind. It can be a tough go, you know? Those days where it’s a challenge just to get up out of bed, let alone look another human in the eye. You string enough of those together and you can start to doubt which side is winning. It was

something Peter and I spoke about at great length when we were writing.

IT: How did playing with varying members of the Grateful Dead affect your approach to composition, if at all?

TH: It hasn’t really affected my songwriting any more than their music already has, but it has definitely helped me as a bandleader. I’ve always been someone who believes that if you work harder than everyone else, good things will happen. So to see these guys that are in the back nine of their careers still swing for the fences every night and put in the time in the woodshed, it’s inspiring.

IT: I feel like there’s a huge difference in being inspired by music, and simply rehashing music that you love. Where does the difference lie, particularly, in staying creative and original?

TH: That’s a tough one. I guess intention has the most to do with it, and keeping the intention pure. Are we doing this for the party and cash, or are we doing this because we want to contribute to the art? Personally, the innovators are who inspire me. Beatles, Floyd, Zeppelin, Radiohead, Dylan. These groups were all ahead of the curve as they were putting out records when compared to what else was happening in music at the time.

IT: Do you think music is visual, and in particular, the music you write: are there visual cues or inspirations?

TH: Oh yes, absolutely. Most of my inspiration these days comes from film and long form television. I’m still pretty old school and view albums as one piece of art, and I base the flow of a record on how I would imagine a film editor works. Have a flow, an arc, and bring the audience somewhere.

Music has color as well, so that certainly affects my writing and production.

IT: You’re heading out on a road trip (maybe the one you guys are going to head out on soon), and can only bring five cassettes with you (no mixtapes, but live shows ok). What are packing with you and why?

TH: Modern Times, Dylan; 7/8/78, Dead; 2/8/73, Dead; Magical Mystery Tour, Beatles; and Dirt, Alice In Chains. These five recordings have gotten me through many bouts of anxiety and depression over the years and I’m pretty sure they’ll keep it up for years to come. •

R

emember when the Buena Vista Social Club came out almost 20 years ago and seemingly every member of the group got their own record deals?

(My favorite BVSC spin-off artists were Compay Segundo and Omara Portuondo.)

Well, the local duo of Sally Ramirez and Doug Robinson is making world music that stands up to all that good stuff.

You can see them Friday night at the Hangar on Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. with their show “The Latin and World Music of Sally Ramirez and Doug Robinson,” where they’ll be performing music by celebrated composers from the Latin and European world and be joined on stage by members of Crimson (Eric Aceto, Chad Lieberman, and Al Hartland). This performance will celebrate their soon-to-be released CD “Mar y Sal/Sea and Salt”.

The Ithaca Times spoke to Robinson about the show.

Ithaca Times: This is your third concert at the Hangar Theatre. What will you be playing?

Doug Robinson: The program’s going to be a mix of Caribbean, Latin American and South American music, which is our favorite thing to do. Usually, Sally structures the shows so that there are equal amounts of English and Portuguese and Spanish. Sally and I have been doing a duo thing for the past few years, so we’ll probably start with that, and then we’ll bring the rest of the band out, one by one probably. We’ve got Chad Lieberman, Eric Aceto and I think Al Hartland is going to be playing percussion with us.

IT: The Hangar is a great venue.

DR: It’s wonderful. They always treat us really, really well whenever we play there.

IT: I first met you when you were playing a lot with Johnny Russo. How long have you and Sally been collaborating?

Cinemapolis’ monthly Family Classics Picture Show

I

’m always looking for an excuse to plug David Moreland and Allison Andersen’s monthly Family Classics Picture Show, now in its second year at Cinemapolis.

They’ve already shown goodies like The Wizard of Oz, Mad Hot Ballroom and The In-Laws this year, Moreland always introducing each film with lots of fun history and behind-the-scenes tidbits.

One of the best recent birthday presents I gave myself last year was a ticket to their screening of the Marx Brothers’ classic, Duck Soup. A good friend had just lectured me that movies were a dying art form with young people, so it was especially gratifying to see the theater packed with kids who were already Marx Brothers freaks. (Sorry, parents, Groucho, Chico and Harpo have reached another generation.)

On Sunday, Oct. 23, the FCPS will screen the 1966 Don Knotts comedy The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, the Ghostbusters of its day. Knotts had been in a 1963 episode of “The Andy Griffith Show” revolving around Mayberry’s haunted house, which

was later expanded into the idea of a feature vehicle for Knotts. I spoke with Moreland about why the film was chosen and got a sneak preview of November’s movie selection, which may be just as spooky as the Knotts flick.

David Moreland: We are showing my family’s go-to Halloween movie. (The Ghost and Mr. Chicken) is a movie that was always playing on my local television station when I was a kid. It’s always been one of my favorite Halloween comedy movies. I think it’s kind of an underrated comedy. Don Knotts, who was so great in “The Andy Griffith Show,” is in what I think is one of his best film roles here. It’s a lightweight comedy, but it’s a really fine comedy. It has all these character actors who you knew, who were always popping up in TV shows and movies in the ‘60s and ‘70s, and about 15 of them have cameos in here. And every one of them gets to shine, each getting more than a few laughs off their cameos.

Then there’s the the very spooky organ music by Vic Mizzy, who wrote the theme for The Addams Family. [Mizzy also

composed the scores for four other Don Knotts movies: The Reluctant Astronaut (1967), The Shakiest Gun in the West (1968), The Love God? (1969) and How to Frame a Figg (1971)] Mizzy wrote an awful lot of stuff. The movie has some kind of spooky moments, like when Don Knotts is going through the haunted house, enough so that the very youngest kids might find it a bit too scary for them. But any older elementary school kids or middle-school kids will just get a big kick out of it. It’s got a little bit of spooky, a lot of comedy and gentle satire of small town life.

to, and it’s become their birthday party movie. They would screen it every year and introduce it to their friends: “I love this movie so much, I want my friends to see it.”

IT: I think newcomers will be surprised by how engaged they are by all the stories of the neighbors that Jimmy Stewart is spying on: Miss Lonely Hearts, the composer, Miss Torso, the couple with the dog all have these well-crafted story arcs that play underneath the murder mystery.

DM: There are so many layers to that movie. You can watch it over and over again and just admire the craftsmanship. •

would like to expand the educational programs. She told me about the “Family and School” Concert Series that she started with Symphony of the Mountains where each Sunday, the orchestra plays a concert that is open to the public. The next day, they invite school children and play for them for free. A glance at the Symphony of the Mountains website shows that last year’s Family Concert on Sunday featured an Instrument Building Workshop before the concert, and an Instrument Petting Zoo afterwards. She said there are sometimes hundreds of children who attend the Monday concert, from elementary school choirs, to middle school bands to groups of fiddlers. She said this is an example of a program that just works, although she would certainly have to work with the community to find out the needs of the local schools.

She was not sure other programs would transfer as well.

She says, although she loves both communities, they are very different.

Orth is not sure what future seasons of the CCO might look like, although she is currently working on the 201718 program. She said her seasons often feature loose, overriding themes. For example, Music without Borders is the theme of Symphony of the Mountains season. They have played pieces from all over the world and in very different

styles. They are on tour with the Kruger Brothers, a world-class bluegrass trio that also hails from Switzerland. Orth said each member of the trio are all European classically-trained musicians who approach the banjo from a totally different angle.

“Their album, Spirit of the Rockies, that we are touring with now, is really classical world meets bluegrass world,” Orth said. “And this is exactly what I am trying to communicate to people: it doesn’t matter what the style is if it is well done. It’s interesting and really nice.”

She said that they recently played at the International Bluegrass Music Association Festival and received four standing ovations. She thinks people are ready for these collaborations and “crossover” concerts. But would it work for Ithaca?

“Absolutely,” she said. “People in Ithaca are so open minded, I think this would be great.”

In Ossit’s mind, someone like Orth was perfect for the job.

“The success of the concert is a primary factor in this selection process of course, but we also take into consideration who will be an effective representative for the CCO off the podium,” Ossit said. “We strive to be an active, contributing member of the Ithaca community and our Music Director plays a significant role in that regard.”

theme in my conversation with Orth. I asked her about the future of symphony orchestras in this country and what she thought the key to sustaining live classical music was. She said it should involve the community, and not just Ithaca, rural areas that surround it as well, that corporate and private donors are interested in seeing that the organization is a part of the community and understands the bigger picture of the area. Orth is a big fan of collaborations and is looking forward to possibly including a children’s choir in a holiday concert. She would like to add a family concert and start a summer concert series, maybe at a state park by the lake.

She envisions a light classical, Broadway, or “Pops” concert where people can bring picnic baskets and beach chairs. She said her goal is to make classical music accessible and to bring music to those who might not have heard an orchestra before.

When Maestro Orth is not on the podium, fundraising, or running community outreach programs, she likes to ride her two horses, Rubix and Wynsone. She said that she is also a fan of skiing and all things outdoors.

I joked that she would have plenty of time to hike the Finger Lakes Trail in November between midnight and 7 a.m.

She laughed and said “I love what I do.

Sometimes I am tired of course, but I just think that I am so fortunate that what I do is what I love the most.” •

The legend and guru of the North Indian tabla, Zakir Hussain has morphed the the highly-refined tradition of Hindustani percussion to music from all over the globe. Hussain has collaborated with musicians from jazz to folk to classical, including Béla Fleck, Herbie Hancock, and Edgar Meyer, among a plethora of others. He’ll be joined by Niladri Kumar, a young rock star of the sitar, who is as comfortable with fusion music as with classical repertoire. Friday night offers an interstellar ride.
