ousi ng was a major topic of d isc u s sion among the Tompkins County Council of Governments this month as the Tompkins County Housing Summit approaches on Nov. 30.

Martha Robertson, a Tompkins County legislator, presented a report that highlighted specific areas of housing needs in the county. The Danter Company, a real estate research and consulting firm, helped to compile the information.

Various factors were considered during the study, including employment, parameters of households that are in the county and student population, which wasn’t looked at during the last assessment.

“The student enrollment is the driver in our market,” Robertson said, “so we look at it this time around.”

Ken Danter, president, sampled many smaller housing units in Tompkins County, interviewed 15 different providers for populations such as senior housing and spoke with many professionals, residents, employers and property owners.

An online survey was also conducted, which garnered 4,500 responses.

Robertson said by looking at overall population growth over the next 10 years, Tompkins County can expect about another 5,500 people living here and that, looking at the population trends for the last 10 years and we moving forward with the same projection, she could expect about 3,800 or 3,900 more students coming to the area.

She added the “big growth” is going to continue to be in the student population.

Tompkins County Chooses Rochester Jail Consultant

he Tompk ins Count y Legislature held interviews with representatives from two firms last week, ultimately choosing a regional nonprofit to conduct a $60,000 study of the Tompkins County Jail over another nonprofit firm located in California.

T hou g h t he Spec ia l Ja i l Committee of the Legislature initially had some reservations about CGR, headquartered in Rochester, Legislator Rich John told the legislature the day of the interviews that the committee would be recommending the more local of the two candidates rather than the

Institute for Law and Policy Planning (ILPP), out of Berkeley.

After nearly losing a state variance that allowed double-bunking at the Tompkins County Jail, the county is looking to hire experts to conduct a study of the jail’s population.

The state agreed to extend the variance until the end of the year, at which time the county must show that it has taken certain steps towards determining the best course of action to solve the jail’s overcrowding issues.

The Tompkins County Legislature held a special meeting ofw the Jail Study Committee October 27 to discuss the merits of the two firms. Kelles told the board that she favored ILPP’s proposal.

n a narrow vote, the Tompkins County Legislature voted November 1 not to request t hat t he New York Department of Environmental Conservation require an Environmental Impact Statement for the construction of a new shaft at the Cargill salt mine in Lansing.

The discussion came after a controversial recent decision by the Tompkins County Industrial Development Agency to grant a one-time $640,000 sales tax abatement for the mine.

L eg islator C a rol Chock (D-Ithaca) brought forward the resolution. It makes sense to require further scrutiny of the project, she argued, in part because the DEC recently announced that it will extended public comment on its negative declaration of environmental impact for the project.

“The way I interpret it, we are asking the DEC to apply the strictest, highest level of environmental scrutiny they are allowed to do... I’m going to vote for this,” said Legislator Daniel Klein (D-Danby).

He added that while he would like more research into the environmental risks, he personally hopes the project goes through, saying “I think it’s a good one.”

“Whatever you think about housing now, according to if things continue how they have been, it’s going to get worse.”

In regards to employment growth, Robertson stated it’s mostly off campus. She said there’s some growth in student employment, with an anticipated 5,800 new jobs in the next 10 years.

“When we aren’t bringing in more housing and we aren’t increasing supply of housing, we’re just increasing the number of people driving on our town roads and county roads and commuting,” Robertson explained.

He is hoping that if enough people comment it will persuade the DEC to require the Environmental Impact State-

“It’s not realistic or even necessarily desirable to have all of our working population live in the county…but if you start from the left [2015]…our current deficit is 7,100 if all of our employees lived here,” Robertson said “Even if you’re talking about half of that number, you’re talking about 3,500 housing units right now is our deficit.”

inventory. The study found that in larger apartments the vacancy rate is “under two percent. The vacancy rate for smaller apartments units is currently six percent.

“We’re going to be trying to track that with local landlords in the future and really try to see [what happens],” Robertson stated. Most of the apartments with more units go to students, around 58 percent.

Robertson said the study also looked at the market rate for apartments and what the county should target in terms of creating new housing units.

Two-bedroom apartments have the largest deficit, with a need of 3,000 for non-students, followed by one-bedroom apartments, with a need of 1,300 for non-students. Single family demand was also looked at.

At the meeting, about half a dozen members of the public, including Eden, asked the Legislature to pass the resolution. Speaking on the other side of the issue, former Legislator Mike Koplinka-Loehr, who lives near the project site, spoke in support of Cargill’s evaluation and efforts to date.

From Shonen Knife to John Doe all the way to a talk by Henry Rollins, there was very little to complain about during the week other than, perhaps, a lack of quality programming on television.

t wasn’t long after Rumbleseat Music packed its bags and moved to Nashville last spring before parchment was hung on the windows and dust from the drills and saws began to fly.

In a commercial boom in the city, the onetime home of a former telephone exchange at 121 W. State St. was unlikely to stay vacant for long, in a prime location near both the Commons and State Theater. But it was the nature of the business that’s taking Rumbleseat’s place that almost seems right for both the block and the city it sits in: a place to have a relaxed pre-or-post-show drink in a progressive and meticulously thought out setting.

It had been almost two years ago when Cakes approached loca l developer and entrepreneur John Guttridge–who she’d known since their high school days in Ithaca–seeking a location for a bar all her own. A veteran of the local scene with stints at Delilah’s, Madeline’s, Mercato and Bar Argos, Cakes had become a seasoned veteran of Ithaca’s elite establishments since returning to the area in 2009 and now–well-learned and ambitious–saw the opportunity to make her own mark.

he Tompk ins Count y Legislature unanimously voted November 1 to enact a new local law that will make housing trust properties exempt from taxes on the difference between their full-market assessed value and the restricted re-sale price of the home.

The old oak f looring of the building has been repurposed as the surface for the back bar, a design by Gideon Stone and Mike Barnoski, alums of HOLT Architects who have stakes in the bar. They’ve found some Easter Eggs in the building: some old copper wiring from its days as a telephone exchange building and some bricked-over win-

dows buried beneath the old plaster, which Cakes said will be turned into an art installation of some sort. But the aesthetic of the space, Cakes says, is just where it starts.

Cakes is looking to depart from all that, looking to create a classic cocktail bar to complement the elaborate mixes being poured at the other fine establishments in town, specializing in the time tested classics: the Manhattans, Martinis and Old Fashioned’s of the world. The idea behind this is to add to the atmosphere, allowing more time for conversation and service, but also to fill an

The Community Housing Trust (CHT) was formed by Ithaca Neighborhood Housing

Services to help people with modest incomes buy their first homes. CHT uses subsidies from state or federal programs to significantly reduce the purchase price and operating costs of the CHT homes, making them more affordable.

According to a press release issued by Tompkins County, at the public hearing preceding the vote, Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services director Paul Mazzarella spoke in support, and thanked County Administrator, Assessment Director Jay Franklin, and the Legislature for pushing for the new State law, which he said was unanimously approved by the State Assembly and Senate.

An Argument For Unionization Cornell University’s School of Industrial Labor Relations responds to interim president Hunter Rawlings III’s opposition to a grad student union

I

n his “statement on graduate assistant labor union representation” (October 27, 2016), Interim President Hunter Rawlings cites the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR School) as being “the leader in the field of labor education.” We write here as faculty of the ILR School, drawing on our expertise and experience in the field of labor law, labor relations and labor rights. We agree with President Rawlings that it is essential that the University respect the graduate assistants’ choice of whether they wish to be represented by a union.

We also agree that it is important that graduate assistants have access to information relevant to making their choice. Unfortunately, however, President Rawlings’ statement presents a negative view of unionization based on speculation and unsubstantiated assertions. In responding to these

speculative claims, our letter seeks to provide useful information about the reality of unionization in universities.

The National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) recognizes that employees have collective interests in joining together to improve their working conditionsfor employees’ “mutual aid or protection.”Whereas an individual employee, acting alone, usually lacks power to negotiate effectively with an employer, unionizing gives employees a collective voice that levels the playing field for negotiations.

President Rawlings’ statement, however, is a drumbeat asserting that collective and individual interests are in opposition. This assertion mischaracterizes the purposes of unionization and the way collective bargaining works. Through negotiations with the employer for a collective bargaining agreement, unions attempt to achieve improvements that benefit all the individual employees in the bargaining unit,including higher wages, workload, health insurance, safe working conditions, and grievance procedures. Collective bargaining also enhances individual employees’ ability to express their priorities about needed improvements.

The union negotiating team, which includes employees, creates bargaining proposals based on the priorities of the employees in the bargaining unit.

don’t know about you, but after that election I feel the need for two fried eggs on rye toast and a side of home fries and coffee in a semi-clean, well-lighted place. I know just where to go.

Studies show that there are two kinds of people in the world: those who love diners for breakfast, and those who do not. I am a member of the first group.

My family has been dragged to diner breakfasts so many times that my children say “order up” when food is served at home, and I’m not making that up. Lucky for me and those of my ilk, there’s an ample supply of authentic diners in Ithaca.

There are at least ten very solid options, though now that Manos and the Ithaca Diner are gone, I tend to favor the State-Lincoln-Hal’s axis. I looked it up online, and to qualify for ‘authentic’ certification, according to the Tompkins County Ministry of Diners, no fewer than six of the following eight characteristics must be obtained:

Greek ownership Maybe it has something to do with that famous Greek proverb, “one cannot live well without home fries and a side of Canadian bacon” (translation provided), but running a diner (I mean a real diner) is second-nature to Greek-Americans. Look for the clues: posters of Greek islands, thick accents at the grill, pastitio on the menu (and I don’t mean as an item, either).

Grease This is apparently pretty important. I’ll quote the regulations: “All breakfast entrées shall contain no less than 31% grease by volume.” Should grease levels dip below this for two or more consecutive days, the diner runs the risk of losing certification and being re-designated as a café. The best diners have Bangs Ambulance on their speed dial and a staff registered nurse.

Diner demographics In the morning, especially on weekdays, the demographics of the diner clientele tend to skew male and old. (Late at night, they skew more toward Ratso Rizzo.)

It’s one of the few places left where you might rub elbows at a counter with a World War II vet. Also generally part of the scene: hung-over college students, a few families and a guy who looks like Jim Ignatowski losing an animated argument with himself.

Bona fide diner wait staff Mostly female, very efficient, always know your order if you’re a regular. They don’t introduce themselves and tell you that they’ll be your server today. Being continued on page 7

These folks make their living $2.25 at a time and when it’s busy, may not be inclined to stand patiently by while you take a leisurely look at the menu. Proficiency with chewing gum is recommended, but not required.

Counter dining option If there’s no counter, it’s not a diner. That’s just state law. There are some exceptions, like the Falls Diner in T-burg, that have been grandfathered in, but the Ministry is very reluctant to grant such dispensations.

Coffee In an age when baristas duel and ‘grandé’ mean ‘medium,’ diners remain steadfast and true to the idea that coffee is best served burnt, stale, watery, and in thimble-sized cups. Up to three gallons can be consumed without apparent ill effect.

Signature potatoes Every diner, no matter how humble, has a trademark breakfast potato dish.

Home fries, hash browns, potato pancakes steeped in diner grease, it’s the ultimate comfort food; artery-clogging to a degree that makes cardiologists salivate and hoard travel brochures. Best washed down with burnt, stale, watery coffee.

Extreme affordability History lesson: As part of the National Recovery Act of 1933, price ceilings on diner food were put in place. Through a strange mixture of legislative indifference and aggressive lobbying by the DBEC (Diner Breakfast Eaters Coalition), those limits are still in place. Consequently, it is possible to feed a family of nine a full, three-course breakfast, complete with bottomless thimbles of coffee all around, for under eight dollars.

A good diner breakfast leaves you feeling like you could live off the cinder block in your stomach for a week without needing to resort to other sources of nutrition. And diners are a world without pretension. Someone beamed here from 1936 would feel at home. As would Charles Bukowski. A word of warning, though: it’s not for the squeamish. There’s no Five Second Rule for food dropped on a diner floor, the underside of a booth table can be excavated for gum samples dating back to a time before manned space flight was possible, and I’ve seen tables wiped with rags I wouldn’t touch wearing a triple-layered HazMat suit. Still, it’s breakfast we’re talking about, the self-proclaimed most-important-meal-of-theday, and germophobia must take a back seat to soul-healing. For those of you who prefer designer coffee and hardtack with marmalade, served in an atmosphere of crippling prices and chamber music, I feel only sadness. You’re missing out. County Reccomends Raises For Legislators The Legislature’s Government Operations Committee recommended the salary of the 14 members of the Legislature by more than $2,000, starting in 2018. The raise will bring their salaries to approximately $21,400 a year, their second raise in seven years.

assistants will interfere with graduate education, the faculty-graduate student academic relationship, and shared governance. These assertions are belied by the evidence and the best available empirical research on higher education practice. As the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) observed in its recent Columbia University decision upholding the right of teaching and research assistants to unionize and collectively bargain in private universities: “‘Collective bargaining by graduate student employees is increasingly a fact of American university life.’” The NLRB summarizes the extensive experience of collective bargaining in public universities: “Recent data show that more than 64,000 graduate student employees are organized at 28 institutions of higher education, a development that began at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1969 and that now encompasses universities in California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington.” The NLRB concludes that close to 50 years of graduate assistant unions in public universities provides relevant and useful evidence that collective bargaining can extend to private universities. Additionally, as the NLRB observes, “Both the original and successor agreements at 2 NYU addressed such matters as stipends, pay periods, discipline and discharge, job posting, a grievance-and-arbitration procedure, and health insurance—nearly all familiar mandatory subjects of bargaining across the private sector, which appear to have been successfully adapted to a university setting.”

The NLRB relied, as well, on academic research findings that unionization does not negatively affect faculty-student relationships. This research includes a recentsurvey-based study comparing unionized and nonunionized campuses, which confirmed the findings of prior surveys that unionization does not interfere with faculty-student relationships or harm the education or training of graduate students. (See, Sean E. Rogers, Adrienne E. Eaton, & Paula B. Voos, Effects of Unionization on Graduate Student Employees: Student Relations, Academic Freedom, and Pay, 66 ILR Review 487-510 [2013]). Moreover, this 2013 study found positive effects of unionization on faculty-student relationships, specifically, that unionized graduate students “had higher mean ratings on their advisors accepting them as competent professionals, serving as a role model to them, being someone they wanted to become like, and being effective in his or her role.” (p. 505).

Finally, unionization and shared governance have long coexisted. Faculty unions and graduate assistants unions in public universities engage in collective bargaining over terms and conditions of employment at the same time that faculty senate and graduate student assemblies engage in shared governance. This is the typical model in universities that the Cornell Graduate Students United and the Cornell Graduate and Professional Student Assembly can follow.

Tompkins Jail: To Build or Not to Build?

The jail is crowded.

Something needs to be done. But what?

everal men in white clothing are fast at work as the smell of fresh-grown green tomatoes frying on a pan wafts through the air.

The scene could be one pulled from behind the scenes of a high school cafeteria or a high-yield restaurant, the room at face value appearing like any other commercial kitchen. The employees are intent and focused, quiet in their work and the food, with ingredients grown in a garden onpremises, looks delicious, immaculate. The plumbing is another story.

Set in concrete about 40 years ago, it has since fallen into disrepair that today would be unfeasibly rectified. Now, the water and whatever would normally go down the kitchen sink’s garbage disposal is rerouted through a pipe and somewhere outside the reinforced brick walls of the Tompkins County Jail.

“That should give you an idea of what the infrastructure in here is,” Captain Ray Bunce, administrator of the Tompkins County Jail, said as he surveyed the scene.

The Tompkins County Jail doesn’t stand out too much from its modest acreage at 779 Warren Road, just past the entrance to the airport. An unspectacular single-story building set in brown brick, the structure was built in 1986 as a neces-

sary move, a changeover from an antiquated facility by the downtown courthouse to a state-of-the-art, pod-based system, in line with the best practices of early-80s jail construction.

Today, the facility lacks its former luster. In the holding cell, the wall between the bench and toilet is missing, shoddy construction giving way to the kicks of hundreds of inmates over the years. There are cracks in the windows, new steel welded to rusting doors that had given way to years of salt and abuse. Even the layout itself had changed: what used to be commissary is now a storage closet, a former holding cell now the office for the facility’s on-site nurse, the bars still in place. And in several rooms, one can find something added in recent years that now has the county legislature scrambling for a solution once again after years and years of deference: an extra bunk.

In 2015, the average daily population in the Tompkins County Jail was 88 people, about 30 more than it was ever intended to hold.

But over the past two decades as the county’s population has grown, those in-

terviewed by The Times said the illegal economy has since changed the nature of crime, and Bunce has had to write to the state each year to allow the jail to surpass its written limit on population. This is partly due to keeping in line with the expectations of the state, but also in an effort to avoid boarding out inmates to other facilities, a process that not only involves the time of Bunce’s limited staff but also induces negative psychological impacts on inmates (many of whom have not yet been convicted of the crime they were arrested for) and a cost of up to $85 extra in taxpayer dollars to house them. Inmates usually make their way to to Tioga and Chenango Counties, sometimes going to Broome County and Cayuga County. But in rural jails everywhere, space is limited. Sometimes, Bunce said, he may have to call two or three jails before finding somewhere to house his extra inmates. He even recalls loading up two vans full of intakes on one night in ‘97 and driving out to Albany County (which currently takes in approximately $3 million a year on board outs); the only place that could take them all.

Tompkins County isn’t alone: According to a recent study by the Vera Institute of Justice, as states work to decrease their prison populations, local jail populations

are taking on much of the burden, with total daily population in jails nationwide totaling more than six times what it was in 1970. Most of the intake comes from rural areas: according to the study, smaller counties now hold 44 percent of the overall total, up from just 28 percent in 1978, a growth of nearly seven times what it was compared to a growth in large county jail populations (defined as having populations of 250,000+) by about three times.

But people don’t commit the same crimes as they used to and even if you send them away, they always seem to come back. Today, a trip to Tompkins County Jail isn’t a thing a good portion of the jail’s population see as deterrence to committing a crime; it’s become something else entirely: a place with a bed and a steady meal. Consequently, the facility’s staff now sees plenty of familiar faces.

“Corrections has changed during my career,” Bunce, who began in 1994, said.

“It’s changed to more of a treatment… it seems to be going that way more than I’ve ever seen it. I will guarantee you every inmate who comes into this jail leaves in better shape than when they’d come in.

Maybe they’re high on drugs: after some time in here, they’ve detoxed, they’ve received medical treatment and they’d gotten some good meals. Maybe those were

The biggest resource he and his officers lack, Bunce says, is space.

Despite population estimates falling short of expectations, the jail did not just meet capacity projections, it exceeded them: In 2015, the average inmate count on a given day was around 88 people. Even if the models projected were to remain accurate over the space of three decades, projections in the 1983 plan still showed that, by 2005, peak jail capacity would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 55 inmates.

The old proposal is also highly-antiquated in its philosophy for use of space.

In the 54-pages of program data in the plan, programmatic space includes only the required indoor and outdoor recreation spaces, two 80 square foot counseling and meeting spaces, a visitation room and a 200 square foot library. The biggest space available was an 800 square foot multi-purpose room, still in heavy use and with a lengthy waiting list. That room is now in use up to six hours a day for Regents and G.E.D. courses, during which nobody else may use the room.

This, according chairman of the County’s Jail Study Committee Rich John, is counterproductive to the purpose of the jail.

“We want to make sure these people don’t come back,” John said. “Something’s gone wrong if these people ended up in jail, so what do you do to relaunch them?

Tompkins County has fully supported alternatives to incarceration and that’s going to continue…. If our goal is to have the people who are in jail not come back, you have to do something while they’re there.”

Reducing the popu l ation

Without numbers and data to back up a decision, little can be inferred about the benefits a bigger jail could have. But one Th e

idea, Dietrich said, can have a benefit: setting a lower cap on the total number of beds in the facility could force municipalities to think more about alternatives to incarceration than seen in other counties with bigger jails.

“One concern is how they will address it,” she continued. “It’s enormously frustrating. On one hand (the state) is trying to close prisons and find alternatives for people coming back to society, and on the other hand they’re pushing localities to increase their capacity. It’s the usual thing from the state: say one thing and do the other. I don’t know what this legislature’s going to do… I don’t know what they can do.”

One easy solution, Dietrich said, was forcing the jail to serve its original intention: holding those awaiting trial or prison who were deemed a flight risk. A solution to this problem came in vogue in New York City to address overcrowding issues on Rikers Island, where charitable organizations would post bail--normally reserved for those who are a flight risk before trial--for those arrested on misdemeanor charges who could not afford the cost. However in 2012, a formal arrangement enacted by the state set a limit on charitable bails at $2,000. Now in New York State--where bail is arbitrary-Dietrich said there are justices that set bail at $2,500 on misdemeanor charges, an issue that has cut OAR’s annual number of bailouts from a high of 72 people three years ago to an average of about 36 per year today. This issue has gained enough attention that in May 2016, the New York State Bar Association’s Committee on Civil Rights met at Fordham University to outline a series of possible reforms to the system.

But it’s the impact on county costs that Dietrich notes most of all: for each person /

they bailed out, by OAR’s estimate, the county saved approximately $7,200. The organization, to avoid the charitable bond law, are now seeking to form an LLC to work in a similar fashion to a bail bondsman.

“Nothing we do right now is particularly effective to reduce recidivism. One of the basic reasons is, in my opinion, when people come out of jail into homelessness it’s only a matter of time before they’re back in jail. Having a safe place to call home is square one for anyone looking for stability. Maybe day reporting (probation) isn’t the best use of our money, maybe it’d

be better spent making sure people have stability in their lives. I don’t think it’s a closed system. There’s so many things impacting recidivism the study isn’t going to get to.”

What County Legislator Anna Kelles sees is an opportunity to perhaps not expand the jail or even increase programming space, but to identify what the county doesn’t have and where its money could best be spent. Right now in Tompkins County, Kelles said, there is no detox center or treatment center, which is important to note as the issues those serve to treat are the reason many people return

to jail. A majority of people in the jail, she said, also have some degree of mental illness as well, which Kelles said hearing as a consistent issue with very little programming to address is possibly a huge area of opportunity for putting in alternate resources to avert the population.

“It does seem like there’s more we can do,” John said. “The issue is what we’re doing is not serving the people in the jail now. If there are viable alternatives to incarceration that reduces those numbers further. I think there’s some opportunity here to move the road patrol division and use that space to expand programming

on-site and maybe even, if we’re going to build, build secure detox that can flex up in space to allow more jail or more detox based on what we need, to use the footprint that’s there to be more treatment-focused and less criminal.”

Or, Kelles said, reevaluate what the jail should do; help those who need it most in the context of jail, and provide help to those who could be helped outside the jail.

“They want an expansion due to things we know will address some of the issues so we know people aren’t housed in a jail where they’re twiddling their thumbs,” she said. “But is that the right expansion? That’s the question. An expansion would be $22 million. Would it solve our problem? Where I struggle is we have a jail that, physically, is very depressing, not a quality I would like. In my ideal world, we’d improve the quality of the jail but wouldn’t add beds--we don’t have the staff for it anyway. It’s not the cost of the expansion itself, it’s the operations cost after the expansion that will affect us. The major issues are drug-related and mental health-related, and we have no supports for those.”

If the need to build a bigger jail exists, it may not necessarily be because it’s inhumane. Though outside of state regulations and, Bunce said, a strain on officers, the corridor areas hardly seem inhumane.

Other than the pods--which are oriented in a glass-walled octagon under the watch of a single officer--many have the appearance of a college dorm room, seasonal decorations and magazines lying around and a television turned to a daytime talk show.

Kelles said she had a stance before that overcrowding was inhumane, that the county was stacking the jail with people like sausages and conditions were terrible.

That is, until she visited the jail for the first time.

“I was doing my tour and Captain Bunce took me into one of the blocks with a variance,” she said. “The room had four women in it. Each one was in for heroin.

And I hung out with them for an hour, and at one point I asked what they thought of the variance, if they’d heard they’re pulling it. One of them said to me, ‘I think it sucks.’ Me and Captain Bunce were totally not expecting that. ‘I don’t want to lose my roommate.’ She turned down an empty cell to be in a double bunk so she had someone to talk to. We as humans can get so self-righteous sometimes when we’re basing our personal interpretation on a distant observation.” •

f you were to ask the members of the Ithaca College football team what was going to happen when they took the field against Buffalo State at Butterfield Stadium on Saturday, they might be hardpressed to give you an answer. Were you to ask them what was NOT going to happen, they would have told you very emphatically: There was no way in hell the Bombers were going to lose head coach Mike Welch’s final home game.

The Bombers kept their collective promise on both sides of the ball, and while the offense put up a mere seven points, that was enough. The defensive unit slammed the door on the visitors, and the shutout was the second consecutive such effort in home games this year. It was the first time since 1999 that the Bombers posted back-to-back shutouts at home, and it was also the first time since 2004 that the team has blanked an opponent twice in a season. The win put one more feather in the 2016 Bombers’ cap in that it completed a perfect home schedule, and going into their final game of the season (next week’s Cortaca Jug matchup at Cortland), Ithaca is now sitting at 5-4 . The fact that the Ithaca defense held Buff State to a mere 195 yards of total offense is remarkable, given the visitors came in averaging more than twice that amount (414 yards).

Saturday’s game was also a farewell for twenty-two seniors, and one of them–quarterback Wolfgang Schafer–hit freshman Will Gladney (a semi-local player that hails from Owego Free Academy) with a touchdown pass in the first quarter for the contest’s only points. Fans of highscoring games would be disappointed that the 8-yard strike was the only points of the game, but defensive purists were thrilled with the effort.

The Cortaca Jug game will be one to remember, as both teams will be playing with a lot of passion. For the Bombers, it will be a chance to bring the Jug back to South Hill for the first time since 2009. This

particular team has never been in possession of the coveted trophy, and to see Welch go out with the Jug in hand will be a huge motivator. Welch has been coaching at his alma mater since before any of his players were born, and respect for him and his legacy runs deep.

The Red Dragons, on the other hand, are having a very uncharacteristically frustrating season. They are 4-5 overall (2-5 in the Empire 8) and the opportunity to finish at .500 is surely lighting a huge fire under them. Their players have never seen the Cortaca Jug reside anywhere other than in Cortland, and they will do whatever they can to assure that it remains there.

The game is sold out, but can be viewed on Time Warner Channel 325 A few columns back, I wrote that the Ithaca High girls’ swimming and diving team was on a mission to reclaim the sectional title that had eluded them for the past four years.

The seniors on the team were upstarts when Horseheads won the title the Little Red had held for many years, and given this was their last chance to bring the trophy back to Ithaca, they were relentless in their effort to do so.

One of those seniors–Annika Browning–was so sick on Wednesday that she actually was unable to finisher her race in the prelims. But, according to head coach Mike Blakely-Armitage, she rallied on Saturday and crushed it.

“On Saturday, we knew that if we swam strong and did as well as we did in the prelims, we’d be okay,” Blakely-Armitage said. “I told the girls to focus on one event at a time, and that if they did, we’d have the result we had hoped for. All of our seniors swam very well, and I’m happy for them.”

Mike was also very happy for senior Micaela Moravek, who had been flirting with a state qualifying time in the 50 free and finally nailed it. The state meet is Nov. 18-19 at Ithaca College, and the Little Red will be well represented.

“Working in high volume cocktail bars is a hell of a job, and I might be getting a little too old for that,” Cakes said. “Lot 10, Mercato, now Simeon’s, Argos, those are places that can make you a Corpse Reviver #2 to perfection, every single time. I don’t need to do that, I can just make a really good Manhattan.”

And her focus? Whiskey, which she said is a passion of both she and fellow

owner-operator, Dave Thomas.

With little external storage, garnishes and other touches will be in limited quantities to allow fast rotation of product with about a third of their supply coming from locals. The idea is to have no “weeds” at the Watershed: that no effort go wasted, no food or paper misused, that their different approach works in an efficiency akin to London’s White Lion (where opening night, they served two Manhattans and a Sazerac in 25 seconds to start the eve-

ning) or San Francisco’s Trick Dog. Cakes is ready to hit her stride immediately. While construction has been taking place around the clock for the past four months, she’s been working behind the scenes on an Excel spreadsheet, charting everything from financial projections to menu maps and inventory. The ‘Getting Down To Business Course’ at Alternatives Federal Credit Union, she said, was a profound influence in that regard.

The Watershed will be progressive on several fronts beyond its view of its place among Ithaca’s nightspots. To fund its construction and furnishing, they instituted a community-supported hospitality program, where future customers could buy equipment, glasses and other accessories for the bar in exchange for drinks

and rewards to be redeemed later on.

They intend to have a staff of eight that will be paid a living wage of $15 an hour, on top of their gratuity. Their staff had undergone a series of trainings called Barstander, a pilot training in bartender intervention that will create an in-bar experience that provides a safe time out for those consuming alcoholic beverages, teaching their bartenders how to recognize potentially risky situations arising from those who’d had a few too many.

CGR has worked almost exclusively in New York State and listed nearby counties as former clients, like Steuben and Chemung Counties, which still have some of the highest jail populations in the state and have few ATIs (alternatives to incarceration) in place.

“One of the reasons you see a higher rate of incarceration is that they have a very different way of thinking in the legal system there that produces different results,” Lance Salisbury, supervising attorney for assigned counsel for Tompkins County, said CGR Principal Donald Pryor said that the firm’s familiarity with Upstate New York puts him and his colleagues at an advantage. He said CGR could complete the project on the county’s proposed six-month timeline.

“The main thing is you all are way ahead of the curve to begin with in terms of using alternatives to incarceration, and the county arrest rate is significantly lower than is the case of Steuben or Chemung,” Pryor said. “You have the political or public mindset or predisposition to want to find ways to reduce the jail population… other counties see the practical dollar and cents, and see it as a public safety issue and not so much values-driven.”

Pryor said that he and his two colleagues, who also sat in on the interview, would be spending significant time on site in Tompkins County and that the three of them would be handling the study themselves, not passing it off to less experienced employees. In contrast, Alan Kalmanoff, executive director of ILPP, said that his firm’s experience working with counties all over the United States gave him a greater wealth of knowledge.

Though he said he could possibly complete the report in three months at a reduced rate, he also said that one county kept him on for over a year because they wanted more information. Kalmanoff declined to answer questions about the specifics of his research methods should he be tasked with the job, saying that he would fly to Tompkins County for at least one week immediately upon being hired so that he could get to know the county better before making decisions about the best way to proceed. • –Jaime Cone

Cornell Stabbing Arrest Made

A

n arrest has been made in relation to the early-morning stabbing of 19-year-old Ithaca College student Anthony Nazaire on Cornell’s campus nine weeks ago.

Ithaca Police announced Nagee Green, a 23-year-old man from Freeville, was arrested earlier this week without incident on the 1600 block of Dryden Road in Freeville. Upon arraignment, Green will be charged with one count of murder in the second degree and one count of assault in the second degree, both felonies.

The investigation, which commenced immediately after the August 28 incident which left Nazaire dead and another 19-year-old man wounded, involved the review of an unnamed number of videos recorded of the incident, evidence Chief John Barber said required some “prodding” to get people to come forward with.

He said, as proceedings move forward, more video evidence is still being sought.

Police say after the altercation, which took place after an on-campus event at Cornell, Green–whose connection to the victim was not established–allegedly stabbed both victims before being stopped by police as he boarded public transit to make his way downtown.

Days after the murder, Nazaire’s family told the NY Daily News that police had identified a suspect following the murder, a fact police did not confirm on Monday night; only that there had been multiple leads allowing them to make an arrest. As for why an arrest took so long to make?

“Six years ago, when we were applying for a loan to get started, is when I learned that the food business has the highest risk,” she said.

Undeterred, she forged ahead with what she knew would be a successful business model. Looking back, she says she never felt that being a woman business owner put her at a disadvantage: it never really occurred to her, possibly because in Trumansburg she sees so many women business-owners and elected officials all the time.

“The town supervisor, town clerk, the

owners of Salmon Pottery, Sundrees, and Fresh Organic Hair are all women,” she said, all of whom are located nearby in the Main Street area.

“The location itself is it,” she said. “I remember exactly walking down Main Street and wanting something quick and healthy because fast food feels typically unhealthy.” Trumansburg had burger joints and pizza places, but she thought it would be nice for locals to have something like Green Star, the organic coop in Ithaca.

When she saw the space just a few doors down from Gimme Coffee! open up she saw instantly that this was her chance, and with the help of mother, Patricia Heckart, Good to Go! was born.

Alina Kim is harnessing the power of karaoke to drive her Lansing bar, K-House.

K-House houses an upbeat open bar room with an open karaoke stage, but also has ten private rooms available to rent for small groups wishing to jam-out for an hour or two on their own.

These private karaoke boxes are not unusual in eastern Asian countries like Japan, China, and Korea, where they are about as frequent as Starbucks franchises are in the U.S. According to Kim, karaoke is a popular pastime in Korea where families or groups of friends regularly go out to dinner and stop by a karaoke box on the way home.

This trend has also made its way to major metropolitan areas like New York City, where Kim grew up. Kim’s native Fort Lee, in New Jersey, has about 24 karaoke rooms alone, each usually catered to a

specific ethnicity. Finding none of the sort in upstate New York, Kim’s younger sister recommended she start one in the Ithaca area.

“I figured that if this is strong enough of a business model to exist so heavily in Asia, there’s no reason for it not to eventually become something at least close to as strong in America,” said Kim, who is a graduate of Cornell’s Hotel School.

Kim estimates that 70 percent of her customers have never been exposed to this type of karaoke before, but sees new faces every night. This can be reflected in K-House’s regular 23-30 percent growth in year-to-date sales since opening two years ago. She doesn’t necessarily cite the local colleges as K-House’s major source of business, but definitely finds the student to alumna bond helpful.

“We sell board games and magic card games,” says Stacia. “We don’t sell anything electronic, just old-school analog games. The Enchanted Badger is an 1800 square foot space that is big enough to both display the games and to be able to serve as a gathering place. with a small seating area and pre-made options available as well. “Some people will come in for breakfast and grab a sandwich to eat later,” Monaco said.

The breakfast burrito, made with ecofriendly brown rice, black beans, a fried egg, salsa and sour cream is the most popu lar item. Monaco suspects t hat people appreciate its heartiness. “It holds you over,” she said. “If you have it for breakfast you don’t need to eat until late lunch.”

Like all the breakfast items at Good to Go, the burrito is served all day long, from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., when the shop closes.

Monaco’s personal favorite is the turkey Reuben and choice of two daily soups.

She said that while she has few food restrictions herself, growing up her family spent a lot of time in the local coop, where she gained an understanding that people have different dietary needs.

“We can totally accommodate glutenfree,” she said, “and we take requests.”

Not only does the shop go out of its way to take special to-go orders, but staff also takes suggestions on what grocery and personal items to carry.

“That’s pretty much how I chose half my products,” Monaco said.

Business grew steadily for three years and then plateaued, but now Monaco knows exactly what to expect each year.

“It’s a struggle, especially in a small town, to make money,” she said. “The slow season is January and February. You have to plan on it and balance it out with summer being the busiest.”

To help ma ke ends meet, she still works for her once full-time employer Fingerlakes Grassroots Festival, though she now only works there part-time. She’s busy, but she says she wouldn’t have it any other way.

It’s probably one of the biggest rewards of owning the business: being a part of community,” she said. “I just love it.” •

This uplifting scene can be attributed not just to the inspirational quotes on the walls, quirky decorations, and bright design, but to the karaoke itself. Neuroscience experts have proven interacting with others in a social setting while feeling a similar beat makes people happier.

Obviously since the idea is fairly new to the area, it’s accompanied by some major misconceptions.

Running a business, especially one that operates into the early hours, takes a physical and time-related toll that’s exceptionally challenging for mothers. Kim is expecting her first child in January.

Kim hints at a possible expansion to K-House to what she describes as “B-Cities” with a younger college base, however she says anything is possible at this point.

Plato’s Closet How a former Corporate marketer Found her passion

F

or 15 years, Renee King was a marketing manager for a calendar company, another face in corporate America with a great salary and what seemed to be great financial security.

Then, in 2011, she was laid off.

The Vestal resident floated around for a few years, trying to find a job she could take on that would pay comparably to the living she had made before. That effort didn’t go so well, she said, and one day she stopped searching. That’s when, she said, she began to look at opportunities she could make for herself. King began looking into the realms of the entrepreneurial world, seeking a business that she and her husband could invest in and use to help make a new living where King could both pursue her passions and make a decent wage while she was at it.

She found it in the aisles of one of her favorite haunts in Vestal: Plato’s Closet, a chain for gently-used name brand clothing the former GAP manager often frequented.

In spring 2014, she opened up shop in

Ithaca and today, the business is still going strong.

“We’re not going anywhere,” King said.

“Obviously, your first couple years are tough and you have to make a place for yourself in the community. I feel very good about the future.”

With a proven platform to build on with Plato’s Closet, the business was set up for success but, as with anything, success was not necessarily guaranteed. Staffing is the toughest thing, King said, the first few years marked by a need to find the right mix of people to staff the store. Over the years, the store has had a lot of staff turnover, sometimes due to the hectic environment of the shop or the chemistry between the employees.

Usually it’s the pace of the operation, manager Jessica Clark said, because at times the turnaround of clothing from the intake to getting it on the floor can often resemble a factory line in how quickly inventory can get turned around. How the business works, she explained, is to take in used clothing

They get quite a lot coming in (up to 1,000 pieces in a day, Clark said) and inventory needs to constantly be monitored, as pieces can usually only stay on the rack six months at a time. When those months are up, the staff is responsible for finding those pieces and getting them on clearance.

But it’s reaching out to the community that’s become one of their strengths. As a former marketer, King knows the importance of constantly pushing a product into the public’s eye and projecting a warm demeanor. At Plato’s Closet, it’s about two things: an aggressive presence on social

media (managed by two employees whose jobs are completely geared to the role) and a kind-eyed staff to greet you.

“Friendly faces only,” King said. “If you’re shy, you need not apply.”

Their investment has paid off. King now boasts a staff of 14 full and part-time employees and business after almost three years, she said, is humming right along, even in the demanding business climate of Tompkins County’s miniature metropolitan center.

“Monetarily, it’s hard to start a business,” King said. “It’s not inexpensive to do business in Ithaca. Rents are high and startup financing is hard. But we’re doing okay.” •

Events at Rev, like Startup Idea Demo Day, take business pitching to the next level, bringing students from Ithaca College into the community and connecting them with local resources.

Eye Glass Alice Muhlback at the Eye Gallery

A

lice Muhlback could perhaps be considered as Ithaca’s Picasso.

Why I am so attracted to Alice Muhlback’s art, in all probability, is the reason is that I am a cartoonist. (I worked about 15 years in comics, overlapping with three decades in the animation industry.) Alice’s art is cartoon-based. She draws cartoon characters in line, and then paints the work like a great abstract expressionist.

Her new show currently on view at the Eye Gallery on the Ithaca Commons (arguably the hippest gallery in Ithaca) features art riffing on an animated film, Alice, co-created with the filmmaker Pamela Tan and producer Chris Holmes (with music composed by Joshua Handal) called Once Upon an Eye. The film can’t be shown yet as it has been entered in various film festivals, but there is animation on display at the exhibit with characters and situations from the film (a bit like a coming attraction).

She has a style totally her own. And she has developed over the years a type of personal iconography of reoccurring characters that

she deploys like a composer using reoccurring themes.

There are some precedents in world cartooning that her art reminds me of. In animation, I think of the Beatles film Yellow Submarine, and the Murakami-Wolf film The Point (which featured music by the late Harry Neilson). In the print medium, I think of M.K. Brown (a cartoonist whose work appeared in The National Lampoon, which was humor magazine of my youth) and the cartoonist Dan O’Neil, who drew the newspaper strip Odd Bodkins, and was one of the Air Pirates, a group of underground cartoonists who got the Disney organization very angry at them in the 1970s.

And I think of the late, sainted B. Kliban–the cartoonist who was famous for those ubiquitous cats.

But there are also those two late, sainted, world-class cartoonists Alex Toth and Jean “Moebius” Giraud. Toth was a great cartoonist in the adventure mode (Space Ghost) where Moebius was a great French science-fiction cartoonist (Metal Hurlant). But both artists occasionally drew much simpler work that displayed a near miraculous sense of design.

That’s what reminds me of Alice’s work. Her design sense is extraordinary. She comes up with the most compelling of character designs with an absolute simplicity of line.

And then she paints her work like the greatest of the abstract expressionists who emerged in New York City after World War II…Mark Rothko and Franz Kline and so on.

As to why I think of her in terms of Picasso…

I once saw an exhibit of extremely large Picasso paintings at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California circa 1979. They were

from a period when Picasso lived in Cannes in the South of France.

It was happy, earthy subject matter–women, food, palm trees, the Mediterranean–and the paintings were like big cartoons, drawn with thick, heavy lines. I especially remember how the characters all had big cartoon hands, much like Muhlbeck’s characters.

Muhlbeck also frequently makes sculptures of her characters using cast-off materials. Picasso did that too. Picasso’s neighbors called him “the Junkman” because he was forever picking up cast-off stuff on his walks around his neighborhood, which he used to make his sculptures.

Both Alice’s and Picasso’s sculptures have a sort of funky, jury-rigged quality to them.

Alice’s work also reminds me of Joan Miro and Paul Klee. Both artists have a cartoony quality to their work…cartoon-like characters and objects drawn in line and painted with bright, childlike colors.

And I think of Marc Chagall for pure charm.

Alice often has characters floating in the air, which reminds me of Chagall’s famous, supercharming painting of two lovers…locked in a kiss and floating through the air.

Now let’s consider the gallery…

The Eye Gallery, on the Commons in downtown Ithaca, is one of Ithaca’s newest galleries. Julie Simmons-Lynch, the former editor of Heavy Metal magazine, launched it in September of 2015. It is a tremendous cultural addition continued on page 20

Blood and The Spirited World Hangar Theatre’s production of Macbeth

be read as psychologically symbolic but unlikely to strike us with true dread. So we suspend our disbelief as we watch Macbeth tempted by the witches’ predictions, a seduction of the soul that unleashes all the horrors to follow.

The brevity of this play (it’s not clear if the full version has survived) leaves great lacunae in the mental transformation of Macbeth and his wife – we follow their changes in vast leaps, as if illuminated but intermittent flashes of psychic states. The inherent difficulty in rendering Macbeth’s character is seen in this production; on opening night last week the leads (both highly skilled actors) seemed searching for an interpretation throughout the first act. Michael Donato’s Macbeth was at times too modern, not a persuasively fierce general, and his speeches didn’t always project when he turned from the audience. As Lady Macbeth, Kirsten Sad opened curiously with a smiling, coy, girlish demeanor that was unconvincing and far from noble.

The company’s combat (here guided by Jacob Lehman) is always one of the tangible pleasures of an ISC show – dynamic action, rousing cries, and fallen bodies authentically dragged off the field. Varied fighting gear and the costumes in general have grown more satisfying and sumptuous in each production, thanks to the genius of designer Lauren Cowdery. When Macbeth and his new queen emerge for the first time in royal robes and crowns, it’s an almost breathtaking moment.

And AmarA*jk’s scenic design reaches new heights as well: giant leafless trees conjure the forest and darker forces of nature, a huge basalt marker stone bears its runes like an omen, and a kaleidoscopic stained glass star high above echoes both monarchy and Christianity.

The infamous weird sisters soon appear, here not dirty hags but wraiths swathed in gauzy white from head to toe, more Candomblé priestesses than medieval witches. This interpretation certainly suggests a spirit world, but their flailing about regrettably makes them less ominous.

For the modern audience, the supernatural figures throughout Macbeth can hakespeare’s Macbeth, or “the Scottish play,” has long been an audience favorite and many times re-envisioned, through films like Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood and the more recent Michael Fassbender version, a film so bleak it makes you wonder who would bother fighting over such barren territory.

Ithaca Shakespeare Company’s current production, handsomely staged at the Hangar Theatre, evokes the intrigues of the history plays as much as the monstrous deeds

A large, capable cast, vigorously orchestrated, kept the action pulsing forward.

Erik Lucas was a forceful Banquo, whose reappearance at the banquet was the most chilling ghostly presence. Macduff, who early recognizes Macbeth’s treachery, was played with marked nobility and eloquence

by Daniel Wisniewski, a welcome hero in this forlorn world. The cruel slaughter of Macduff ’s family is all the more poignant after the intimate scene of his wife (Jennifer Lehman) and young son (a most engaging Birch Snyder).

Dave Dietrich portrayed the ill-fated King Duncan, with Conor Shatto and Eric Hambury distinguishing themselves diversely as his sons. And a welcome, brief bit of comic relief was afforded by David Romm’s Porter.

This classic tale of betrayal and bloody

butchery is enriched by those superb speeches – the summit being Macbeth’s despairing that life “is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”

Director Ponton has said the timing of this production was partly to suit the disrupted spirit world of the Halloween season. But he also cites the play’s warning about “the dangers of ignoring one’s moral compass” – a sobering reminder in our disturbing election season. • Barbara Adams, a regional arts journalist, teaches writing at Ithaca College.

Abstraction Vs. Figuration

enough that the works exhibited together appear as one whole, all containing the essence of a shared painting. Much of the unity stems from an undeniably shared love of bright colors and fluid marks.

Essence, which graces the walls of the Community Art Partnership’s Artspace all November, is the most recent collaboration between Kaplan and Maxwell, who have spent many years and collaborations together and whose harmonious creative synchronicity is evident in their work as a result. From the first moment walking into the gallery, the space immediately struck me as meditative and calming, rich with bright blues and greens and reds bursting throughout the room and inviting you to examine their depths.

Maxwell’s portion of the show contains several photographs focused on horses, but he veers away essence without having actually been from straight livestock photography by painted. The latter work, or at least its use using his visual manipulations as a means of photography, is disconcerting at first; if of expressing mood and emotive quality. only because each piece looks so much like “Out to Pasture” stuck out most readily, a painting that one would not think to put thanks to its watercolor-esque background them under the category of photography. and the emphatic vibrancy of its hues.

Signal to Code: video art through the decades

What appears to have come out of those residencies, at least according to the videos present in Signal to Code, is a series of disparate yet inventive works that are, to an extent, difficult to describe or wholly comprehend. Exhibited in the Johnson identically to last year’s Gordon MattaClark show, Cuts (reviewed 30 September 2015 Ithaca Times), the room features ten old television sets with one larger video projection in the middle. All eleven videos play at once, creating a room of flickering light and color as visual images compete for attention.

At one monitor, Andrew Deutsch’s Magnetic North presents thunderstorm noises against a rocky landscape, a radio signal arching into the sky. While some works may touch upon elements of documentary or short film (at which point the distinctions between genres blur), others are at times either plotless, narrated in an obtuse manner (if at all) or simply glimpses of an idea played out in some fashion, striving for a complete expression of experience that may or may not be achieved.

These are not necessarily criticisms, but elements that are no doubt demonstrative of the experimental quality evident in the video art field, a quality that helps define it. Freed from the constraints of cinema, which asks for a more widespread public

What A Long Strange Trip Grateful Dead tribute band is the real deal

lose your eyes. Feel the dimensionally crackling breeze wash over your face. It’s 1975, and you’re at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, right at the apex of the Grateful Dead’s epic “Help on the Way/Slipknot!/ Franklin’s Tower” three-song power surge.

Powerful visions swirl through your being, there is bass and guitar interplay that is beyond imaginable, and you’re right there with Jerry, Bob, Phil, Keith, Bill, Donna, and Mickey: shipmates on an intergalactic voyage.

You open your eyes. It’s 2016 and you’re

not on O’Farrell Street in Little Saigon, but at the State Theatre in Ithaca. It’s not the Dead onstage that are superimposing the cosmos, but it is the next best thing: Chicago’s Dark Star Orchestra.

“The Grateful Dead were unlike any rock band I’ve ever known—they perpetually defied the norm,” DSO and former Cosby Show and Different World keyboardist, Rob Barraco, happily explained.

“No show they did was like any other. I saw them for the first time on March 28, 1972 at the Academy of Music in NYC. I went in as a fan but I didn’t truly get it before that show. I sure got it after seeing them live though. In those days there weren’t any bootlegs of shows, so all I knew of the homeowner insurance

They opened with ‘Truckin’ and it tore me to shreds, man. It opened up a whole new horizon.”

This it that Barraco speaks of, is indeed the sort of quality that lies far beyond regular analysis. Its basis is similar to the theory of reality (quality) that Robert Pirsig laid out in his philosophical novel Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. For Pirsig, it is something that can’t be explained, because it exists as a noncognitive experience. Likewise, the Dead’s music just seems to happen. If you’re lucky, you sort of happen with it. Dark Star Orchestra is a deeply serious, conceptual band; playing complete set lists from the Dead’s 30 years of live material. They keep the magic of the band alive in an honest, interstellar, and creative way. Their shows are meticulously labored

over, the detail and the replication of each performance extremely remarkable.

“Our rhythm guitarist Rob Eaton handles the set lists for each show,” noted Barraco. “Rob’s got an extensive database for every show Dark Star has ever played, and he goes through it before each tour.

It’s an arduous task, I’m glad I don’t do it [laughs]. He goes through it forward and backward, locating each specific city, and plans shows around what has been played, and what hasn’t played at those specific locations. Rob’s got the patience and the knowledge to do this, and it’s remarkable.

There’s always a very fair cross-section of the Dead’s material selected for each tour.”

The Grateful Dead were a truly unique and original fusion, and as Barraco said, unlike any band before or after them.

They dipped into a dense crystal vision of creativity that opened limitless skies and endless imagination, and they played uncompromising music throughout their entire existence.

Forged in the mid-sixties under the veil of acid and psychedelia and rooted in blues, jazz, folk, and classical music, the Dead tore through three decades touching upon everything from mystical progressive rock, to noise all the way to MTV stardom (“Touch of Grey”). Needless to say, DSO has a lot to of material to pick from. And they revel in the recreation.

“I grew up on ‘70s Dead. So Keith [Godchaux] was my guy,” Barraco said. “I was originally an organist, and I just loved what he was doing with the piano. He had such a dynamic range and I thought he really jazzed up the Dead’s sound. We have a semi-truck filled with gear when we tour.

I have a battery of keyboards at my disposal, the same Yamaha GS-1 digital synthesizer that Brent [Mydland] started using in ’83, and all sorts of stuff modified to achieve those very specific Dead sounds. It’s truly a labor of love.”

Close your eyes and you’re transported to The Strand Lyceum in London. It’s 1972, the orb of eternity is swirling mad, deepening into the abyss. You’re floating invisible; the Grateful Dead’s epic song “Dark Star” pulsates through your every fiber. You ascend. •

nder the deafening layers of noise, violent communication and jarring abstraction, the music of Brooklyn’s Dreamcrusher is ultimately a warm and industrial type of progressive cacophony. You can feel a sort of whole and happy intimacy even while it pummels you into the deepest and darkest abyss. This is intense music with a heart of gold. Luwayne Glass, the non-binary musician behind these surreal

and avant-garde sounds, is sort of like the Jackson Pollock of noise. Like Wyomingite Pollock, Glass comes by way of a landscape vast and desolate and, similar to each other, found ways to connect disparate parts to build complete dimensions.

“I miss how isolated Kansas can be from everything,” Glass said as they pondered their home state. “There were moments where that was beneficial but it wanes on you really easily. In New York City you can isolate yourself quite a bit, but you always know there’s something interesting happening somewhere near you at any given time. Kansas is all I’ve ever known—up until I moved to Brooklyn, my perception of the world was looking at it from a far.”

Dreamcrusher’s latest release, Quid Pro Quo, has a sort of harsh club vibe, swaying and pumping through bits and shards of junk and grime. It’s a deep and grooving listen, as angular and blunt as Whitehouse, and as spirited as Massive Attack. It’s this sort of equalization and openness that serves as the defining portal to the music.

It’s accessible, while still being pure and

honest noise.

“I really just want to make songs that I want to hear, and make things that have a strong sense of nostalgia but through my aesthetic,” noted Glass. “You’ll never hear a project or song I don’t want to be heard, I’m extremely insular. The thing that attracted me to noise was how different it sounded to everything happening around me. I think of noise as a subversion of tradition, instrumentation, performance, nostalgia and conveying emotion through sound. I grew up fawning over Swans and Throbbing Gristle like every other noise twink.

But generally, genre is poison.”

The inviting sounds of Dreamcrusher exhibit a sort of contrast to today’s noise aesthetic. Noise music, particularly contemporary material, is oftentimes exceptionally bleak and serious. In many ways, it is difficult (though not impossible) to feel the artist(s) true emotion.

Glass though, is happy to share their real and visceral emotions. It’s an industrial openness: often encroaching, but never phony.

“I make everything on my computer, varying through different programs,” Glass said. “Live, I want to take people into my space rather than come into theirs. I try to use whatever element to my advantage to do that, use the structure I perform live in to disorient the crowd and the space as much as I can in my own way. I want to alter your senses enough to make the audience feel it and hear it at once. I started as a visual artist and I still do all my own visual art, and have a heavy hand in my videos and design as well. I definitely see the music as I’m hearing it and making it.”

Glass is prolific, regularly pumping out material since their 2006 start. Since moving to Brooklyn, the musician has drifted through a sort of whirlwind voyage. The music of Dreamcrusher is constantly in flux—pursuing the differences, the experience, and the vital life force—while adapting to new surroundings.

“Recently I’ve been coming up with songs pretty sporadically,” they said. “There is a lot more structure to the process now. I spent the bulk of the past decade churning out songs and EP’s constantly, so right now I’m trying to regroup and make something as interesting, varied and complex as my life has been since moving to NYC.” • Ithaca Underground’s November Music Series runs from Thursday, Nov. 10 through Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Community School of Music and Art. D

octor Stephen Strange’s origin is pure Tony Stark: gifted narcissist is crippled and uses his super powers to heal himself. And so Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange, the 14th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe now playing at Regal Stadium 14 goes back to its roots.

The magical Marvel world is much wilder and woollier, coming up with the trippiest visuals yet seen. How trippy is it? Inception times Inception. I felt like someone had dosed my popcorn. I described them to a friend, and all he could say was “…Flashbacks.” (Note: I saw DS in 2D, but am now seriously considering a 3D screening.)

As familiar as the character arc may be, the kaleidoscopic, shifting visuals can’t help but feel like the most radical shift yet in a very well-established series. Benedict Cumberbatch is perfectly cast as brilliant surgeon Stephen Strange; as good as RDJ’s Tony Stark in character, but odder, more sardonic and black in humor. I never read the comic, but I knew the image of the character. Strange ruins his hands in a car accident (set to “Interstellar Overdrive”, Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, no less), makes his way to Nepal and is literally hurled through an endless myriad number of dimensions and galaxies by the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton–bald and awesome–

could stand in as a great Yoda).

Other members of Strange’s mystical crew emerge, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Benedict Wong, and you get your bad guy played by Mads Mikkelsen. All of the Marvel beats play through, but with a haunting, lysergic spirituality and by the time all of Strange’s trademarks are established–the goatee, the cloak, the amulet–we feel the way we felt at the end of Iron Man: that we have finally met the character.

Cumberbatch and Derrickson–the first filmmaker in the MCU whose previous films , mostly horror, I haven’t seen–as well as the film’s writers are all new to the franchise yet following this film, are sure to boost their fan bases and future job prospects. And unlike so many of the year’s generic CG spectacles, the awesome and enchanting visuals show real creativity, imagination and vision.

Since Doctor Strange is one of the better, more off-beat comic-book films of the year, fans of the Adam West Batman TV series will love the new DVD Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, rendered in loving tribute to the goofy ‘60s popart camp of the old show. There’s even a particularly good Russ Meyer reference.

Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar reprise their roles for a truly zany caper. (A sequel has been announced for 2017, with William Shatner as Two-Face.) *** I haven’t seen my pal Hugues Barbier much lately. I haven’t seen any of the new films, but I’m particularly looking forward to the Kubrick documentary S is for Stanley, and Creature Designers, featuring interviews with make-up maestros like Rick Baker. IFF is always packed with cool events, after parties and other cool stuff. (Ask me about my My Favorite Year moment with director Brian Trenchard-Smith sometime. Now, that was a hoot.)
