federal judge has ruled Cayuga Medical Center violated federal labor law in fighting its worker’s right to unionize, court documents say.

The decision results from a May hearing in Ithaca where nurses at CMC alleged the hospital had placed unlawful pressure on the nurses during their unionization efforts. According to the decision, the hospital allegedly issued “an assortment of unlawful threats, directives, and prohibitions on union activities,” also alleging that one employee “received an unlawful disciplinary warning, and another was targeted over the course of several months for her union activity and received an unlawful suspension, disciplinary warning, demotion, and an adverse performance evaluation.”

As a result of the judgment, Goldman ordered the hospital pay financial compensation to Marshall for the adverse affects its actions had created and to post a copy of a notice informing employees the hospital had violated national labor law within view of employees.

In a statement by the hospital released Monday afternoon, CMC said its lawyers would be appealing the decision in federal court.

“Cayuga Medical Center strongly disagrees with the ruling by the National Labor Relations Board,” the statement said.

“We have always maintained a supportive workplace for our employees as we partner together to deliver the highest quality care to our patients and the community. We will be appealing the ruling by filing exceptions to the decision by the November 25 deadline.”

Several allegations of the initial lawsuit, filed in July 2015, were dismissed, particularly ones alleging that managerial conflicts with employees were not completely based in anti-union sentiment.

In an 83-page decision by federal judge David Goldman, it was found that the basis for the hospital’s defense–a three page employee code of conduct–was found to be too broad and vague a document to allege hospital employees were violating the conditions of their contract by conducting union-related activities in the workplace.

The judge also ruled that acts committed by the hospital following its learning of labor-organizing activity–including several emails to nursing staff encouraging them to report any harassing union activity to administration–were illegal. This relates to an incident that occurred around July 8, 2015 the decision states, when ICU charge nurse and team leader Ann Marshall sat at a table just inside the hospital cafeteria en-

fter a recent announcement that parent company Gannett Company, Inc., would be eliminating two percent of its workforce, The Ithaca Journal laid off two employees last week, one a long-time photo journalist and the other an editor for local Gannett newspapers since 1991.

“Tuesday was my last day at the Ithaca Journal,” wrote Simon Wheeler, whose pictures have appeared in the paper for more than 20 years, on his Facebook site. Editor Lois Wilson’s position was eliminated the same day.

Wheeler had worked for nine years for the Star-Gazette, also owned by parent company Gannett, before coming to the Journal.

This most recent reduction in staff comes after a tumultuous year in which the daily newspaper, which was founded in 1815, lost several other key members of its newsroom. Currently, the Ithaca staff is down to two reporters on location, several sales staff, a receptionist and several circulation staff.

In summer of 2015 staff reporter Matt Hayes left the paper, and his position was not replaced. That fall, four longtime employees retired under voluntary earlyretirement incentive packages. Reporters Tom Fleischmann, Bruce Estes, and Dave Bohrer and marketing and circulation

employee Tony Valetta left the company on October 30, 2015. Estes was with Gannett in various roles for 41 years and served much of that time as a top editor and general manager at the Journal. Fleischmann was a sports writer who joined the Journal in 1983, and and Bohrer was senior editor for the Journal and content editor for the Star-Gazette. Similar early retirements were taken at the Elmira paper.

In an effort to fill the gaps left by departing employees, those who remained began filling multiple roles at three local papers owned by Gannett: the Journal, the Star-Gazette, and the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin. Wilson began splitting time editing at both the Elmira and the Ithaca paper.

Longtime city reporter David Hill left in spring 2015, but later rejoined CNY Media Group–a regional arm of Gannett consisting of the Star-Gazette, the Journal and the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin–as a regional economic reporter after a brief stint at the Gatehouse Media-owned Utica Observer-Dispatch. He left Gannett again– presumably for good–last winter for nonGannett-related reasons.

Rawlings Opposes Grad Student Union

C

ornell Interim President Hunter R. Rawlings III issued a statement last week about the potential unionization of the college’s graduate assistants.

In a letter to graduate students and other members of the Cornell Community, he said that he does not support a labor union as the exclusive bargaining representative for students for the following reasons: (1) The negative implications for Cornell’s current system of shared governance among students, faculty, and staff.

(2) The complications that may arise when individual students are bound by the requirements of a contract designed to serve the interests of a collective, interests that may not meet the needs of individual students and hinder the tailoring of each student’s educational experience.

(3) the potential for collective bargaining about terms and conditions of employment to negatively affect graduate students’ academic experience, because labor law does not define the boundaries between academics and employment.

A group of students called Cornell Graduate Students United has come together and are in the process of unionizing.

According to the decision, Marshall had been active and open in her support for the union prior to this, but this was the first time she had attempted to “table” in the cafeteria when she was approached by hospital administration telling her she could not be tabling in the cafeteria.

“Because of the potential for chilling lawful union activity, the Board finds it unlawful for an employer to invite employees to inform it of protected, albeit unwanted, authorization card solicitation by other employees,” the decision states. “When an invitation to report unwelcome union solicitation is phrased over broadly, it will be found unlawful on this rationale.”

The judge sided with several other allegations made by nursing staff, including violating their right to discuss their wages, unlawful interrogations by administration, prohibiting the distribution of union literature, threatening employees over Facebook with the threat of job loss, and the unlawful suspension and demotion of hospital employees consistent with heightened union activities, among other allegations.

he last few decades have seen a lot of change in the City of Ithaca, but one fixture for that duration has been the Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services (INHS).

The organization which restores, maintains, and builds affordable homes throughout the region celebrated its 40th birthday last month.

“Today every one of these neighborhoods is a place with a really robust sense,” said Paul Mazzarella, 26-year Executive Director of Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services.

“People really want to live there. There’s a lot of competition for the housing. There’s no such thing really as an abandoned house here.”

The goals and aims of INHS have not been without major changes in 40 years.

“Our focus here has really shifted from the revitalization of houses, to housing affordability,” said Mazzarella.

INHS now devotes more of its time and energy to building and developing

The roots of what would become INHS began with a federal program of the Department of Housing and Urban Renewal to rehabilitate urban homes. This was largely a response to middle class families fleeing to the suburbs, leaving behind vacant or otherwise dilapidated properties.

In 1974 congress passed the Housing and Community Development Act that created community development grants which provided the basis for funding and creation of INHS in 1976.

INHS began with one full time employee compared to their present 30-person staff. The organization began with a budget of only $50,000, but now operates on a $3.1-million-dollar budget and holds over $25 million in assets.

“To me the biggest impact is when we succeed in helping somebody get housing that is affordable,” Mazzarella said. “It can really change their lives.”

When Hill started at the Ithaca Journal, he wrote, the staff consisted of six reporters, a business editor, a part-time reporter specializing in features and some news on the rural towns, a sports staff consisted of four people (With its own editor). Rounding out the staff was a copy desk of two copy editors, an assistant city editor, a business editor, a managing editor, an opinion-page editor, a photo editor and two full-time photographers, as well as an entertainment and features editor, who also did a few stories on those topics now and then for the news pages.

There was also a full-time newsroom secretary, Hill said, and at one time a parttime librarian.

Mazzarella cites the availability of affordable housing as a critical factor for building the area’s economy.

In addition to adapting to the shifting housing market in Tompkins, Mazzarella says building in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner is one of the new key goals of INHS. country, numbers declined over the years and in recent months, reporters left and weren’t replaced. His reporter position– which was changed to a hybrid of city government and sports coverage–was filled by Matt Weinstein, a reporter from the Press & Sun-Bulletin. Currently Neill Borowski is serving as executive editor of all three papers.

All these changes to the longstanding Ithaca daily came after Gannett announced in June 2015 that company would be undergoing a “new Gannett” rebranding.

The move was preceded by Gannett’s decision earlier that year to separate its print and broadcast assets into two different companies, with the print side going by the name USA TODAY Network. In the last 12 months, the Gannett Co, Inc., share price has dropped from $15.82 to $7.77, a drop of 51 percent. In the email, Hill wrote that Gannett appears to not evaluate each newsroom on an individual basis.

“The industry, as you know, pays poorly, but the IJ is hurt nowadays by the high cost of housing,” Hill wrote. “I told Tom Claybaugh (the former publisher of CNY Media Group) it should account for that, but he was told that’s a non-starter with Gannett. They pay purely on market size. I think it’s worth pointing out that Gannett pays young journalists a rate that’s barely above the AFCU living-wage recommendation for Ithaca… To be fair, my impression is Gannett is better than most other big chains in terms of paying people who stick with it for a long time– though the bar is really, really low.”

Community response to the layoffs were broad. Readers and coworkers alike expressed dismay at the news of the layoffs on Wheeler’s Facebook page. “I’ve admired Simon for all these years — what a loss,” said one. “I’m just dumbfounded about this,” commented another.

“I’ve been really speechless this week in the empty office,” said Journal Rapid Response Reporter Kelsey O’Connor. “But I really just want to say thank you for being such an inspiring mentor over the past two years. I have learned so much about photography, journalism and the community working with you… I hope you find someplace new that appreciates your talent and dedication to the community.”

A Presidential Mandala

I

magine a presidential election where a single pair of candidates ran blissfully unopposed for the two highest offices in the land. Imagine an electorate at ease with its lack of a choice; happily free of the rancor and bitterness that too often characterizes hard-fought campaigns between rival candidates.

This actually happened once, or nearly so. In the election of 1820, the Democratic-Republican ticket of President James Monroe and Vice President Daniel D. Tompkins (after whom Ithaca’s home county is named) ran essentially unopposed for reelection. The old Federalist Party had more or less collapsed, losing its national viability and failing to field a presidential candidate. Of the 232 electoral votes available, President Monroe won 231, and would have won all of them if not for a single “faithless” elector, who broke ranks to cast a solitary vote for Monroe’s Secretary of State, John Quincy Adams, the true author of the “Monroe Doctrine.” Vice President Tompkins fared slightly less well, garnering only 218 electoral votes. No fewer than fourteen of the electors proved “faithless” when it came to the vice presidency, dividing their 14 votes among four Federalist candidates. No matter: in both the popular and electoral vote Monroe and Tompkins won overwhelming landslide victories, with barely a whisper heard from the inadvertent opposition.

When Monroe completed his second term in March 1825, it marked the first

and (so far) last time in American history that we’ve had three two-term presidents in a row (Jefferson, Madison, Monroe).

But that’s about to change. When Barack Obama and Joe Biden leave office on January 20, 2017, for only the second time we will have had three two-term presidents in a row and, for only the first time, three two-term vice presidents in a row.

This gives one pause, as it not only suggests that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to dislodge a sitting president in his or her bid for reelection, but, as a corollary, that it’s becoming increasingly difficult for a one-term president to achieve true presidential greatness. Most presidential historians agree we’ve had only one great one-term president–James K. Polk (184549)–but in Polk’s case the term “great” extends only to matters of self-discipline and the magnitude and enduring impact of his achievements. Suffice it to say he was not a nice man.

Then again, serving two terms is no guarantee of greatness either, or of anything else for that matter, as George W. Bush’s dismaying example makes all too clear, though his presidency was certainly highly consequential, its impact inordinately long lasting.

If Hillary Clinton is elected president on November 8, it will be only the third time in American history that a Democratic candidate for president was elected to directly succeed a sitting Democratic contin u ed on page 4

Life, in Autumn A

By St e ph e n P. Bu r k e utumn is a time of creeping coldness, dark, and dormancy, replete with what you might call signs of death.

But we - bold species - address such distress, even embrace it, in our wary but hopeful living, with a holiday mocking death and decay, displacing mortal fear with cunning fun.

Halloween is a perennially popular holiday in Ithaca, maybe because it is not partisan, religious, nor official, but tied to the natural world, with supernatural overtones, which are abiding interests here.

It is also perhaps our last chance, here in central New York, for communal activity outside–before shuddering cold shutters things–until April or so.

The holiday merriment started early this year (as last year) with a new (sophomore year) pre-Halloween adjunct, “Wizarding Weekend,” a celebration of Harry Potter — specifically, and things magical, mystical, and macabre — generally.

The event started last year as practically a pop-up gig, conceived by entrepreneurs in the new Press Bay Alley, off W. Green Street, just west of S. Cayuga St., which describes itself as “a micro-retailing environment.” They wanted to do something creative, public, and fun.

They succeeded.

Even in genesis, the pop-up became an explosion. The event blew up online, on myriad sites, attracting hundreds of local visitors, plus hundreds of people from around the state and region. This year, the event extended to four days. The main event, on Saturday, went from Press Bay Alley, down S. Cayuga St. (closed to cars for the afternoon), through the length and breadth of the Commons.

The event showed, and saw, many manifestations of magic, maybe most notably Saturday’s weather, sunny and in the sixties. I ate ice cream outside.

Sorcery was clearly afoot.

And so were crowds. The turnout approached that of Ithaca Festival, an event with much more history, budget, and sponsorship.

It wasn’t just the good weather. Many participants were from out of town, and many from near and far were elaborately costumed. They all were clearly coming rain or shine.

The magic is more in the people, but also the place. It’s not just the spirit of our town, but also its structure, that make events like this possible.

With the Commons, downtown becomes a vast gathering place. Somecontin u ed on page 7

Democrats endorsed Matt over two other candidates for many reasons: his 20 years of experience in every level of our local courts, his involvement in community organizations, and his integrity. A gracious winner of the Democrats’ endorsement, Matt would never make wild accusations he couldn’t support with facts. Is there anything more important for a District Attorney? Matt is humble and soft-spoken, but tough when it comes to protecting the public while pursuing equal justice for all.

times, a veritable theater. This past weekend, certainly, people showed up in performance for each other.

It was a big show, no tickets needed, no doors or walls, outside, among streets, but without cars. People strolled and children scampered, safe and easy.

As common as it is, there is no worse, more tragic absurdity than death in a car crash. Blessedly, this can never happen in the heart of our downtown, on the Commons. I was glad to think about this as I walked among this gathering of carefree people and families.

Death is natural, of course, but let’s try to keep it that way.

The safety and comfort of this gathering was a cheery thing to consider in this season of darkening days, at this event of fabricated mayhem. J.K. Rowling, the creator of Harry Potter, has said that no matter how anyone popularizes or sanitizes her work, its main theme is death.

So: this is autumn. Death beckons, but rather than run, we recognize it with a holiday. In Ithaca, we recognize it with a festival: on safe streets, in costumes, in multitudes. This must confound Death a little, which is not a bad idea.

Death can stand a little confounding. We’re confounded, too. We see leaves falling and it sure looks fatal, but we know it’s not an ending, just respite. The leaves will be back.

Does death always win? We don’t know. But we do know it’s not winning or losing, so much, that counts. Instead, as they say, it’s how you play the game.

I am voting for Ed Kopko for District Attorney because he is the most qualified candidate. He has a considerable amount of relevant experience. Also, I feel that he will improve the Tompkins County District Attorney’s office. For example, a conviction integrity unit, one of Mr. Kopko’s proposals, will help make sure that fewer citizens will be wrongly convicted. There is no better candidate for District Attorney. I wrote to many members of the Tompkins County Democratic Committee in September and urged them to nominate Ed. Quite frankly, their choice baffled me. Fortunately, we can still put this right. Please join me in voting for Ed Kopko for District Attorney on Nov. 8.

John Plumb’s opponent, seven year incumbent Tom Reed’s inadequate Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act in 2014 was originally an Obama administration effort to establish five manufacturing hubs, expanding to 45 more, and creating a public-private network for manufacturing innovation with a billion dollars. What passed Congress provided $300 million, less than a third of what was requested, to be disbursed over 10 years. That was two years ago. The money is now to come out of monies set aside for Federal Energy Efficiency and Renewable Program with a budget of $1.9 billion that year to promote energy-saving efforts for homes, buildings, and manufacturing.

John Plumb would quickly make way to expand those rapidly growing industries engaged in the use and production of renewable energy. Other industries also, preferably local, that don’t degrade the environment, threaten air and water contamination and harm existing jobs in agriculture and food production. Increased infrastructure investment in roads, bridges, transportation and faster internet are also vital. There is a role for government to adequately encourage new local enterprise when the need arises.

–Dolores Saltzman, Ithaca Donald Trump made what many consider a veiled appeal to the “Second Amendment people” to assassinate President Clinton should her Supreme Court nominees rule in favor of gun control. He threatened to jail Clinton without trial during their second debate. He undermined the legitimacy of a Clinton presidency and sowed the seeds of chaos and possible civil war by repeatedly claiming without evidence that the election would be rigged. He has threatened to weaken NATO and is clearly favored by Putin to win the election. And despite all this, Congressman Tom Reed has not rescinded his endorsement of Trump.

Captain John Plumb, on the other hand, has served his country well. His plan for fighting ISIS and Islamic extremism is exceptional. Malcolm Nance wrote the book “Defeating ISIS: Who They Are, How They Fight, What They Believe”. This is what Nance said about Plumb’s plan: “It’s a very sound strategy. We are doing quite a bit of it but overall, it’s excellent. I also see he was on the NSC. [National Security Council] That may explain why he has a fight smarter, not harder strategy.”

The first time was in 1836; Martin Van Buren, having already served as Andrew Jackson’s secretary of state, ambassador to England, and second-term vice president, was Jackson’s handpicked successor, and won the presidency with relative ease. Four years later, in 1840, President Van Buren was defeated in his bid for reelection, and failed to regain the White House in two subsequent attempts.

The second time was in 1856, when James Buchanan was elected to succeed President Franklin Pierce after the Democrats refused to nominate Pierce for a second term.

Buchanan, facing the growing prospect of civil war, realized soon after taking office that he had no interest in running for reelection. Historians regularly rank both men among the worst presidents in our history.

If Hillary wins, she will not only be the first Democrat since Buchanan directly elected to succeed a fellow Democrat, she will also be the first former secretary of state since Buchanan (who served President Polk with distinction in that office), and only the seventh former secretary of state overall to be elected president.

The Republicans, by contrast, have already managed to elect direct successors to sitting Republican presidents five times– Ulysses Grant’s successor Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876, Hayes’s successor James A. Garfield in 1880, Teddy Roosevelt’s successor William Howard Taft in 1908, Calvin Coolidge’s successor Herbert Hoover in 1928, and Ronald Reagan’s successor George H. W. Bush in 1988. Not a stellar cast of successors, one must admit, for either party.

Perhaps Hillary will break the mold. I believe, given the chance, she can and will, in a good way. Considering the likelihood that, should the most recent male nominee of a major political party win the election instead, come 2020 there might not be a presidency, let alone a United States of America, if we’re spared that fate we should seriously consider disqualifying men of any color from serving as president or vice president for at least 24 years, starting with the election of 2020. Consider this: a generation of women to lead the way back to sanity and sense.

The editorial upbraids the protesters at last Wednesday’s rally for being too “loud” and “simplistic” in their demand that contingent faculty at IC deserve job security, fair wages, and respect. While conceding that the IC administration is wrong “on the human level” in treating 43% of its own faculty as cheap, disposable labor, the editorial suggests that doing so is “fiscally sound.” This assertion is not only callous, it betrays a complete misunderstanding of the problem. To saw off the branch on which you sit because it is the most affordable option in the short term does not represent “fiscally sound” thinking.

It is precisely because contingent faculty are treated as intellectual sweatshop labor that American higher education is in the process of destroying itself. As new university graduates join the swelling ranks of applicants for an ever shrinking set of available tenure track positions, the majority discover that their newly minted doctorates can offer them only dead-end careers as contingent professors, without benefits or job security.

They discover that their poverty wages will not allow them to pay off their own student loans, trapping them in a downward spiral of debt and poverty. Given this reality, fewer and fewer people will want to become professors. At some point the academic bubble will burst, and most American universities will have completed their decades-long devolution into squalid degree mills run along corporate lines. By failing to provide a sustainable income and job security to its contingent faculty, institutions like Ithaca College are undermining not only the quality of higher education in this country, but their own long term future as well.

What is clear is that many of our colleagues have trouble piecing together what someone making $14.34 full-time would earn, because we 230 part-time faculty are limited to half-time employment (no benefits) and are looking for further part-time work in a college town.

overtaxation and other restrictive mandates imposed by the state.

“Taxes are killing us,” Masser said. “I confronted her in our debate (two years ago) that ‘the makers are leaving and the takers are coming.’ Tens of thousands of businesses are leaving this state because they can’t make enough money: the government keeps taking it away from them.

You have people trying to make a living and half their pay is going toward taxes.”

Masser and Lifton are polar opposites.

Lifton has been an outspoken pro-choice advocate, often using the talking point of a youth impregnated by her stepfather as an instance where late-term abortions greater than 24 weeks are appropriate. Masser, pro-life through and through, is against abortion in all forms, even for victims of sexual assault.

“Reproductive rights? What does that mean?” Masser said. “What about the baby’s rights? That’s a separate human being. What if my father’s in a nursing home. He’s inconvenient to me. Does that give me the right to put him away? It doesn’t make any sense to me. Show one abortion on television, show the whole thing. Especially a late-term one. Show that baby coming out full intact and kill it. That would stop abortion.”

While Lifton is a staunch opponent of reliance on fossil fuels and the expansion of natural gas infrastructure to fight climate change, Masser doubts it exists, saying you can get computer models to say “anything you want to.” And on the SAFE Act, which Lifton was and continues to advocate for, Masser is a strong opponent, even marking the entrance to his home with a campaign sign emblazoned with a handgun, the slogan: “This house protected by Smith & Wesson. Then we call 911.”

“Say a burglar is coming into my window with full armament–he’s got fifty rounds–because criminals, by definition, don’t follow the law,” Masser said. “I’m only allowed six? That ain’t gonna work.

That’s why I have these signs in my yard: ‘This house is protected by Smith and Wesson. Then we call 911.’ They’re not going to burglarize me; they’re going to burglarize someone else, because I’m armed.”

Masser is needed in Albany, he said, because Lifton does “whatever the downstate Democrats” tell her to do. He said his willingness to work across the aisle as a member of the Enfield Town Board–and the ensuing primary he said was staged by the local party to get him off the board– proved he will work for the people’s best interests.

“I’m not here to represent the Republican Party. I’m here to represent the people of the town. And if Democrats come up with a good idea, I’ll support it.”

When asked if he’d seen any good ideas come from Democrats in the assembly, he said he couldn’t think of any, instead naming two areas he’d be willing to work with Democrats to resolve: Common Core

The Elections Aren’t Rigged

earing what he said was unlikely but possible violence at polling places stemming from Donald Trump’s statements about voter fraud and a “rigged” election, Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick has asked the Ithaca Police Department to periodically check in on local polling places on Election Day. Myrick said this is the first time he has specifically asked IPD to make sure city residents are safe as they cast their ballots on Nov. 8. Myrick said the Republican nominee’s refusal to say whether or not he will accept a loss and his calls for supporters to monitor polling places led him to make the request.

“With Trump out there, encouraging people to go to polling stations and intimidate voters, that concerns us enough that we asked for a list of all polling places from the Board of Elections and IPD is going to do periodic checks to make sure anyone’s safe,” Myrick told the Ithaca Times.

“This is new for this year,” he added.

Myrick said artificially influencing an election on a large scale is simply not possible.

“My thoughts are pretty simple: there is no way to rig a federal election — you just can’t do it, it can’t be done,” he said, adding that “any adults around Donald Trump”

The two candidates pose a striking contrast to each other. Kopko, a flashy dressing former New York State Supreme Court clerk who speaks in a distinctive baritone and touts his years of experience working behind-the scenes on investigations in the ‘80s versus Van Houten, a modest and soft-spoken family court lawyer whose line comes informed by a perspective of two decades in working in the local courts and a compassion based in his family court experience with a harder edge coming from serving as a defense lawyer on criminal cases, most notably including a loss defending Benjamin Cayea in a highlypublicized murder trial in 2015 as well as in robbery burglary and assault cases.

As that applies to district attorney, one thing separates the two candidates, Kopko said: experience, not theory, in supplying the burden of proof as a prosecutor.

“In order to be the district attorney, you have to be able think like the district attorney,” Kopko said. “You need to have experience with law enforcement to be able to supervise and conduct complex investigations. You have to be able to supervise and conduct grand jury proceedings.

You have to be able to put an entire case together from a prosecution perspective so that are both fair to the people and to the defendant.”

While he didn’t touch on his lack of New York State prosecutorial experience, he named his previous experience–as a cop, as an assistant district attorney, as a clerk in the United States Attorney’s Office in Syracuse–as his source of perspective, detailing how his career’s work had informed him how to put together complex cases and investigations on cases from arson/murders to organized crime.

“When you actually analyze what it is necessary for the district attorney to do, he (Van Houten) has done none of that—he has never prosecuted a case or conducted a grand investigation with law enforcement,” Kopko said “He doesn’t know enough about being the district attorney to not know he couldn’t be the district attorney.”

In a recent debate between the two candidates Van Houten admitted that, in fact, he had no prosecutorial experience.

What he did have, he said, was not only the ins and outs of the proceedings but an identification–from the defense’s side–of inefficiencies in the D.A.’s office as it exists right now: a lack of interaction between the D.A. and the community, an inconsistency in its dealings with defense attorneys and the potential of more cohesive interactions with the police.

What both candidates have discussed at length is the concept of individualized justice–of shying away from arbitrary criteria when pressing charges–as well as implicit bias and how to crack down on existing prejudices in law enforcement. How are Tompkins County’s Inmates Voting This Election?

A

s the presidential election looms, a seemingly forgotten voting bloc has already casted their ballots by mail from the Tompkins County Jail.

Like the majority of states, New York automatically restores felons’ voting rights once they have served their prison sentence and completed parole. New Yorkers who are convicted of only a misdemeanor or have been charged with a felony but not convicted, like many of those at the Tompkins County Jail, are allowed to register and vote with no hitches.

Opportunities, Alternatives and Resources of Tompkins County (OAR), a non-profit inmate advocacy group, mailed information to inmates in September about how to register to vote and request absentee ballots.

This is the first year that OAR has mailed the election packets, staff members said, and after receiving an underwhelming response — only a few inmates requested registration or absentee ballot forms — they plan to promote the initiative earlier and more heavily in the coming years.

Voting “is something that if [inmates] can do it, we want them to know that they can and that we will help them,” said Anita Peebles, who has been a client service worker at OAR for two and a half years. “Their voices are important and four years from now, or even in two years, it’s definitely something that we’re going to continue.”

Emily Cornell, who said she is serving a year in jail for a misdemeanor assault charge, was already registered before she began her jail sentence and requested an absentee ballot from OAR. She said she plans to vote for the Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton.

“I think people should vote for Hillary because one, she’s not racist, two, she can change a lot of things,” Cornell said from the jail in a phone interview. “We need a female president and I believe in women’s rights. I want to ... see a strong woman, she’s been through it all. She makes herself look very powerful.”

“I would never vote for Trump — he lies about everything,” she added, referring to Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Peebles said she wished more people had registered and requested absentee ballots, but said that inmates often have more pressing concerns than who is president, like “their day-to-day need to survive.”

“Many are focused on either upcoming court dates or survival or they’re kicking addiction,” Peebles said. “What Hillary and the other one are doing, it’s just not as important to them as ‘when can I get released? Where am i going to live?’”

Cornell, who is working toward her GED certificate and wants to study cosmetology at Tompkins Cortland Community College, said that while she was voting Democrat at the top of the ticket, she had yet to make up her mind on the down-ballot races. The only campaign advertisement she had received in the mail at the jail was from Republican Wendy Long, who is running against the incumbent, Sen. Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, for his Senate seat.

“She wanted my vote and she was the only person who sent me a letter so far asking me to vote for her,” Cornell said.

Myrick, who endorsed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton more than a year ago, said Trump’s rhetoric was “really, really scary” and compared it to “when a sore loser blames the rules before the game’s even over.”

“Someone who believes the election was stolen does not believe that they’re under any democratic authority to recognize the duly elected president,” Myrick said, adding that this belief can result in “domestic terrorism” and people forming “armed insurrections against their government.”

Elizabeth Cree, a commissioner of the Tompkins County Board of Elections, said she was aware of the claims that elections were being rigged, but declined to speak directly about the candidates running.

“I know ours isn’t rigged, and the reason why is because ... we are not hooked up to the internet for any of our voting machines,” Cree said.

Both Cree and Myrick both mentioned that the New York Board of Elections is a bipartisan agency. Cree said that, on Election Day, a bipartisan team will manually check a machine’s tabulation of votes against the physical ballot, and a blind audit of the machines is later performed to ensure accuracy.

“We’ve had the machines for 10 years and we’ve never had an audit that hasn’t come out right on the dot,” Cree said.

Cree said candidates are allowed to have poll-watchers “as long as they don’t disrupt the voting process.” These poll-watchers must sign up through party officials or the campaign itself and are required to sit or stand in a specified area.

“They can challenge a voter” by telling an inspector at the polling booth that they believe a voter should not be allowed to vote, Cree said, “but they can’t really talk any other time.” • —Nicholas

This is one area Masser, a self-professed Reagan Reupublican, contends Lifton on.

Lifton supported the state’s recent minimum wage increase and co-sponsored the bill, and says that working family’s wages have stagnated, never adopting to changes in modern American society, that today there is not enough money available for people working full-time to rise above a life of poverty.

“In my view, that’s wrong,” Lifton said. “That shouldn’t be happening in this wealthy state and this wealthy country. So for me, it wasn’t a hard decision to support the minimum wage increase. I listened to the concerns, especially from small business, and am sympathetic to that, but as history has shown there’s very little repercussion to it. They look for efficiency somewhere else—they raise their prices a little bit—we even out and there’s more money being put into the economy. Henry Ford understood you pay your workers well, and they can afford the product you’re produc-

Lifton said, after passing the bill, she got “maybe two emails” from business owners complaining about the burden created by the minimum wage. On election day, she said she believes the democratic platform will retain its support.

“We’ve led every progressive battle in New York State for the last 25 years,” Lifton said. “It’s a very long list–the battle for the clean air act in New York State, paid family leave–we passed it five, six, seven years before it passed, we helped keep the discussion out there–we’re there for labor rights, the environment. We’ve been about letting the governor know where our body stands, putting pressure on the senate, and I think that helps tremendously to move these decisions where we want them.”

“We’ve got to figure out a way to help people who are committing these low-level offenses,” Van Houten said. “That’s through housing, access to treatment and therapy, access to jobs… we as a community need to pay more attention to those people than just sticking them in jail.”

I think it’s misleading to talk about a conviction integrity unit–like Ed is talking about–something like that is more applicable to New York City. There, you have so many more players in the judicial system, so many opportunities for crooked cops or dishonest assistant DAs who misrepresent or withhold evidence… that’s what a conviction integrity unit might be applicable to. When we have eight prosecutors in the offices working on a case and the Ithaca police and the sheriff’s department, state police… it’s completely realistic for the DA to know everything that is happening as far as major cases and to be totally convinced and totally able to ensure no unethical behavior is happening, making sure no wrongdoing is happening in our judicial system. We don’t need to have a fancy name… the DA is where the buck stops.

Beating The Winter Blues

How to beat depression as the days get colder and darker

any of us know that moods change with the seasons.

Summer is a time of joyousness and revelry, spring a time of renewed optimism and relief. Even autumn, with its decaying vegetation and shortened days, elicits some sort of enthusiasm among people in the northeast as, for a brief while, the colors change and the excitement of something new in the air takes over.

But sooner or later, the shortened days begin to instill a bleak regularity to the days and–when the sky is bright– overcast skies obscure the sun for days, sometimes weeks at a time. And from that bleak backdrop is where the “winter blues” throws us into a funk.

The reason? A lack of natural light affects the essential functions of our central nervous system, affecting our hormone and levels of Vitamin D, which can greatly impact how awesome we feel.

“Physiologically, we require sunlight to synthesize Vitamin D,” said Dr. Henry Gerson, chairman of the Department of

Psychiatry at Cayuga Medical Center.

“That takes place when it’s bright and sunny and our skin is exposed. But Vitamin D is not active right away, and we can store it really well, so we are can maintain Vitamin D levels even during months of decreased sunlight.”

The issue with this, of course, is the fact that Ithaca and the surrounding area happens to be in one of the least sunny places in the United States, with clear skies occurring only a little more than half the time throughout the year. This means less sun, and less synthesis of Vitamin D. “In this latitude we probably should do something to offset the change in the amount of light in winter,” Gerson said.

John Plumb has the credentials to be a representative for all: a Navy Commander, served on White House national security team and has his roots growing up in the Southern Tier. lobbies hard for carbon energy interests in the NY Senate. O’Mara also personally calls for an end to the fracking ban and advocates for less regulation of the fossil fuel industry. Most astonishingly, Tom O’Mara rejects the fact-based science that human activity causes climate change. The League, an Albany and New York City-based interest group, obviously did not examine Senator O’Mara’s record beyond his sponsorship for the lead testing in schools bill. Even this bill, which fails to protect the hundreds of thousands of New York children enrolled in private schools, reflects O’Mara’s lackadaisical approach to environmental questions. This endorsement has stained the League’s reputation for many of us here in the Southern Finger Lakes. I will vote for Leslie Danks Burke, the candidate who will actually fight for the health of our land, water and air.

T

he excellent Ithaca Shakespeare Company (ISC) is going to stage William Shakespeare’s Macbeth at the Hangar Theatre this November.

Macbeth, with its supernatural elements and ultra-violence, is a perfect play for the Halloween season.

I was hesitant to write about Macbeth, owing to a fear that I was becoming repetitive. (I’ve written numerous times about the sublime ISC.) But I finally decided that there is new ground to cover here. Macbeth, to me, seems to have a terrible resonance with life on Earth here in the 21st century. I get most of my news from the radio and newspapers and, as I try to pay attention, I am troubled by an unending litany of violence and cruelty and stupidity.

Macbeth, a tragedy set in 11th century Scotland, tells the story of a Scottish general named Macbeth and his wife, Lady Macbeth, as they murder Macbeth’s cousin, a king named Duncan, to make themselves king and queen… and then follows their harrowing descent into an orgy of murder in their efforts to hold on to the throne. (We also get to see the human side of them…suffering internally for their actions… eventually leading to Lady Macbeth’s madness and suicide.)

I can’t help but think of Syrian president Bashar Assad in the current Syrian civil war, gassing and bombing and starving civilians to hold on to power. In a bizarre coincidence, in the first scene with the famous witches in Macbeth, one of them references Aleppo–once controlled by the Ottoman Empire–the Syrian city where, as I write this civilians are trapped, starving and being bombed.

Staged in today’s times, Macbeth seems so familiar. Assad could be Macbeth. So could Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, which is also bombing civilians in Syria. Or perhaps the king of Saudi Arabia, which is currently bombing civilians in Yemen. And on and on…

Macbeth could be a story on NPR. But Macbeth is also a fantastical play. There are those famous witches, the Weird Sisters, hallucinatory visions, a bloody ghost at a banquet, and an appearance by Hecate, a Greek goddess of the infernal regions.

Thinking about this, it reminds me of something an ex-girlfriend said to me about Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five. My girlfriend was a full generation younger than I, and I nudged her to read Vonnegut because he was a touchstone for my generation. Her comment on Slaughterhouse-Five was brilliant. She said, “You know why he put the flying saucers and the comical aliens in this? Because if he didn’t…this would be unbearable.”

I think something like this may be at work in Macbeth.

The supernatural elements make the play more palatable. Without them, it would be a stark story of ambition and violence and human suffering. They function almost like our dreamlife…lending a sort of dark poetry to the work.

I first read Macbeth way back in 1970. I was seventeen-years-old.

I was a senior at C.W. Baker High School in Baldwinsville, N.Y., a village of 25,000 people on the Seneca River about twenty-five miles north of Syracuse. I was in the top 10 percent of my class scholastically, and we had an opportunity to take college level courses. They were taught by regular high school teachers, but in all cases, they were teaching their loves. An excellent English teacher named Mr. Heidi taught a class in Shakespeare, which I took.

I loved Shakespeare right away. But, truthfully, I didn’t understand Macbeth at seventeen. The one thing I took away from it is in the famous scene with the drunken porter continued on page 16

(the one comic scene in the play) where he is riffing like a comedian on alcohol and sex. The phrase “it provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance” lodged in my brain for the rest of my life.

Recently, as homework for this piece, I re-read a version of Macbeth with a lineby-line modern English translation. And, again, I was struck by how resonant it is to our era.

Macbeth deals with human beings at our worst. And, truthfully one of the things I hoped for in studying it was some insight into my fellow human beings.

I also read the chapter on Macbeth in Shakespeare scholar Harold Bloom’s essential book Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human. Macbeth is the shortest of Shakespeare’s tragedies, but Bloom devotes a very long chapter to it. Bloom can get a bit high-flown for me, but one thing I took away from his chapter is that Macbeth portrays a dark, bleak cosmos. It is something of a nihilistic work.

I think he is right, but, in re-reading Macbeth, I was struck by how entertaining it is…and how quickly the story moves.

Macbeth is a deeply troubling work… that makes me despair for the human animal…but Shakespeare remains a master storyteller.

on a Ray Bradbury autumn evening to the Fall Creek Studios, the home of the Ithaca Shakespeare Company at the very end of N. Tioga Street.

The Fall Creek Studios are composed of an elegant reception area with framed photos of ISC past productions and Hollywood royalty like Orson Welles and Judy Garland and Fred Astaire and a comfortable lounge area with a conference table, an oversized couch, a wall of very cool and varied art, a model of the Globe Theatre, and a hanging wall map of Shakespeare’s turn-of-the-17th century world.

The studio proper is one big room… like a dance studio with a polished wooden floor, a huge mirror running the length of one wall, and overhead theatrical lights.

The actors were all in 21st century garb: sneakers and workout pants and T-shirts and hoodies and wife-beaters, although with Elizabethan era leather gloves and steel swords.

I entered to watch the wrenching scene where Macbeth’s antagonist Macduff learns that Macbeth’s agents have slaughtered his wife and children. The scene contains what I think is the most heartbreaking line in the play, where Macduff cries, “Did heaven look on…and would not take their part?”

(I think of the children of Aleppo.)

The actors did a superb job with an extraordinarily intense scene…particularly Daniel Wisniewski, a senior at Ithaca College, who plays Macduff.

And it was fascinating watching ISC artistic director Stephen Ponton work with

the actors. This was a relatively early stage in the production, so Ponton was frequently breaking into scenes and working on the human emotion (rather than the stage blocking that must be worked out when the production moves to the much larger space of the Hangar Theatre for the final performances).

And then the entire cast appeared from nowhere…

The Faint Light of Progress Charles Giraudet’s photographs at Cornell

A

nalogies between architecture and the human body are inescapable.

Built to echo and accommodate the human body and its activities, the building art expresses some of our deepest longings — our feelings, memories, imaginings, and social belonging writ large and even aspiring to immortality.

Trained as an architect, the Frenchborn New York City photographer Charles Giraudet has portrayed structures as varied as French medieval churches, the temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum in his hometown. He brings to his architectural photography an acute sensitivity for the way buildings mark and reshape our human sense of space and being.

Between 2013 and 2015, Giraudet exhaustively explored the structure and eventual complete demolition of Goldwater Memorial Hospital, a Depression-era brick complex located near the southern tip of Roosevelt Island in NYC—just south of the Queensboro Bridge, which overlooks the island as it spans the East River between Manhattan and Queens. Completed in 1939, the chronic disease hospital was designed by progressive architect Isadore Rosenfield as a humane and modern contribution to New York’s public health system.

Following the final relocation of its remaining patients in December of 2013, the buildings were gradually demolished to make way for Cornell’s planned Tech Campus—set to open in stages beginning next year. During the following twenty months, the artist created a reported 18,000 images, ranging from broad aerial views to intimate close-ups.

A careful selection of these is currently on-show at in the Bibliowicz Family Gallery in Cornell’s Milstein Hall. “Goldwater: Autopsy of a Hospital: Photography by Charles Giraudet,” which remains up through November 22, was organized by the artist with Thomas J. Campanella, a Cornell Architecture Art and Planning department associate professor and urban historian.

The exhibit complements one held at the university’s Johnson Museum this past spring semester, featuring three murals commissioned for Goldwater through the NYC branch of the New Deal-era Federal Arts Project. Assembled under staff curator Nancy Green, the canvas murals—by Ilya Bolotowsky, Joseph Rugolo, and Dane Chanase—had to be carefully extricated from their walls.

Their boldly modernist imagery, daring for the time, showed through despite

their dilapidation. Something of the same period optimism can be felt in the current exhibit, despite the recurring feel of elegy and ruin.

The Milstein show is divided into four sections narrating “The Building and the Site,” “Ancillary Services,” “The Patient’s Experience,” and, finally, “Demolition.”

It combines color and black-and-white images.

The Goldwater campus centered on four dormitory buildings resembling bent airplane wings when seen from above.

Mostly black-and-white, the first section provides an exterior overview—often literal. A pair of dramatic aerial images show north and south-facing views of the “wings,” which nearly span the island.

Here and elsewhere, we also see the multi-story corridor, which runs straight through the entire complex like a spine.

As the curators argue, “The hospital was a miniature city, living in selfsufficiency.” In the second section, we see the mechanical and service areas that complement the more public spaces—these located mostly underground and in the

central “E” building.

Hung in an irregular hodgepodge, the third area adds a welcome note of warmth.

While much of the exhibit shows ruin and decay, most of these shots convey a sense of well-maintained coziness. Color pictures show a paint scheme in pale, gently cheerful tones. An oblique view into a bathroom is a study in stark geometry softened by colored paint and tiles with sunlight seeping in from an unseen window. Small black-and-white images show palpable details: door handles, railing, a religious souvenir.

corridor. (In the end, even the floor is removed.) In another image, a pair of boxy television monitors suspended from mechanical arms above a checkered floor appear to embrace each other.

Elsewhere, we see a giant unframed piece (the only one so presented) showing the northmost building reduced to a skeletal lattice. It stands at some distance.

In front are debris piles and an expansive dirt field, horizontally streaked. From the left and right edges, a wing building and the bridge, respectively, seem to enclose it from behind. •

Delicious Dishes the Norm Aladdin’s still serving high quality food

I

t was the year somebody finally hired me–on salary, with benefits–to write.

1989; the year my mother died, the year Aladdin’s opened in Collegetown at 100 Dryden Road in the crook of that road’s elbow. While I reacted to the combination of emptiness and new challenges, I salved my sadness and self-doubt with friends, indulging in Aladdins’ satisfying Greek, Middle Eastern and Italian fare. My go-to lunch then was the Chiklaki plate, a get-youthrough-the-day, satisfying combination of tender protein and crunchy greens.

I am happy to report that, 27 years later, Aladdins is still a C-town mainstay, and still churning out the iconic Chiklaki plate, a generous green salad, bejeweled with bright, melon-y cucumber slices, ruby pebbles of tomato, and meaty, pitfree Calamata olives, topped off with good-sized hunks of well-spiced grilled boneless chicken thigh, and graced with a snowfall of feta crumbles and one’s choice of dressing on the side (go for the sweet pine-nut, though the Balsamic’s

good too) ($12.25).

These days, a cup of “Lenchili,” half lentil soup, half chili ($3.50) is smokytasting and richly spicy, a warming balm on fall’s first, undeniably bone-chilling days. Fridays the special is creamy New England clam chowder, and, on the summer days scheduled to return eventually, gazpacho. In fact, there are eight soup choices on the regular menu, plus daily soup specials.

Moussaka is a house specialty, its flavorful layers of ground beef, eggplant, and sliced potatoes topped with a thick layer of cheese-rich Bechamel sauce – it’s a substantial keep-you-grounded meal served with a hearty salad with all the Greek-salad goodies ($13.95).

Or if you’re slightly less ravenous, go for one of their pita sandwiches. The chicken Caesar pita was heavy on the chunks of grilled chicken breast, with enough Caesar salad wrapped in to appease the roughage gods, and a hearty sprinkling of parmesan for saltiness.

A neighbor’s large bowl of pasta with basil pesto looked particularly creamy, and there’s a good list of other plain pasta and ravioli selections, plenty of fruit and vegetable salads, and pitas filled with hummus, falafel, or baba ganooj.

Their dessert standards are baklava, carrot cake, and a flourless chocolate torte, but they occasionally offer a special.

As Lieberman’s film Angkor Awakens: A Portrait of Cambodia digs into the complexities of the Cambodian people and history, it attempts to reconcile the friendly nature of the Cambodians and the viciousness of the Khmer Rouge.

As with its people, the film contrasts the natural beauty of the country with the ugliness of its politics.

In just under 90 minutes, Lieberman’s film covers a great deal of complex history and background on Cambodia, taking in the Vietnam War, Kent State and Nixon and Kissinger. (With the election so near, it’s brave of the film to include Bernie Sanders in debate calling Kissinger on the carpet for war crimes.)

The film confronts the anger that drives the new generation, as well as the lack of information and education about the past. A child being interviewed knows his own history and ends up breaking down in tears. His mother worries about passing all this ugliness on to her kids.

Lieberman and his crew interview several fascinating people, including Vong Sokheng, a former Khmer Rouge child soldier; Chhun Chenda Sophea, founder of Impact Cambodia; and Hannah Phan, senior lecturer, Khmer Studies at Cornell, who still has a hard time talking about her

with a client (Jared Harris) who got railroaded in a workers’ disability case; a wife and mother (Michele Williams) building a new house and looking to buy a pile of sandstone bricks from an old man (Rene Auberjonois); and a ranch hand (Lily Gladstone) who stumbles into a student law class being taught by a commuting lawyer (Kristen Stewart).

Some of the stories connect, usually by one character. James LeGros is seen in one context in Laura Dern’s story, and when Reichardt cuts to the Williams storyline, we see LeGros in a different context and different connection to the characters in that scenario.

A few storylines don’t seem to connect at all, which doesn’t hurt the structure of the film. Rather, it emphasizes a certain random bleak quality that permeates the whole film.

Reichardt, like Alexander Payne, seems to have staked out a rugged, Midwestern area to shoot in, contrasting the foreboding natural world with the trains, strip malls and malls plopped down in the mountains and streams of Billings and other Montana cities.

She doesn’t favor the florid operatics of melodrama, preferring to keep her

certain women small in the frame against the natural world. She does favor odd juxtapositions that the audience is left to ponder, as when Dern eats lunch in a mall food court as a Sioux Indian dance recital is happening in front of her. Reichardt puts real life in front of Meloy’s characters and watches them deal with it. •

here have been a spate of Cornell undergraduate memoirs and romans de clef lately. We’ve seen Bruce Dancis’s Resister, Anita Harris’s Ithaca Diaries, and Guillermo Arbe’s Ithaca: a novel, all reviewed in these pages. Gino Bardi’s The Cow in the Doorway is the latest entry and certainly the funniest. Like Arbe, Bardi fictionalizes his youthful exuberance to give it a dramatic arc and perhaps to protect some for whom the statute of limitations might not be quite up.

Tony Vitelli arrives at Cornell in 1968 from a petit bourgeois existence on suburban Long Island. Bardi describes Tony’s lack of worldliness in broad comic terms: I had on the best stuff in my half of the tiny closet–clean blue jeans, a black turtleneck.

A medallion hung around my neck on a thin chain. It was some sort of Egyptian symbol. I didn’t know what it meant, but I was pretty sure it was either peace or fertility. Either one worked fine.

This kind of self-deprecating chatter is Bardi’s stock-in-trade.

His anti-hero is callow, parochial, a little lazy, and quite lost, but his saving grace is that he mostly knows all this, and in the course of his narrative you watch him grope in fits and starts toward a better understanding of himself. Much of his behavior in the first half of the novel is quite cringeworthy, and Bardi deserves some credit for depicting his fictional stand-in with such honesty.

One of the thematic threads in The Cow in the Doorway is racism. There were very few African Americans in Tony’s high school and all of them were sports stars, relaxed and easy-going princes in the teenage pantheon (as far as he could see). So when he encounters his roommate, Clarence Carter of South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, a politicized, pissed-off Afro-centrist scholar, he is completely non-plussed by the hostility that greets his unintentionally fatuous overtures of friendship. Relations never improve between Tony and Clarence.

The main thematic thread follows the relationship between Tony and Melissa Kolaski. Melissa is the classic “out of your league” girlfriend, valedictorian of her high school class, perfect score in the English SAT, triple majoring in political science, music and French, politically progressive and sophisticated. They meet and bond over their mutual affection for Bob Dylan.

In a succession of chapters that are often just a page and a half long, Bardi interweaves Tony’s continuing failure to understand his relationships with Clarence and Melissa; a wiser-than-hisyears ag student called “Country Bob”; two drugged-out would-be political activists called Gordon and Steve (aka “the Freak”); an art instructor and graduate student called Barbara; his father Lou, a World War II vet with a drinking problem; and the zeitgeist of the 1960s itself.

students and former college students of all ages to read The Cow in the Doorway and recognize their own freshman travail. Tony struggles with his drinking and his drug use, with his courses, and to develop his own sense of a self, independent of what his parents and his girlfriend expect him to be. Younger readers will be fascinated by the isolating effect of living in a world without cell phones; Tony has to actually wait in line to use a hall phone. Most older readers will recognize the realistic cultural position of the political protests of the era; they were actually at the periphery of most people’s lives (until you suddenly found yourself in the middle).

Bardi is fluidly hilarious throughout.

Events do not occur in order to set up jokes; he finds the humor in nearly all events. “Nearly” is the operative word here. The plot does take a dark turn in a place where many Cornell stories do: on a bridge over a gorge. Here Bardi depicts a blankness of affect that effectively conveys the transitory states of teenage minds during which things can go desperately wrong or not. When tragedy rears its head in the middle of a comedy, its face can be surprisingly alarming. •

Classic Punk from the East Storied rockers visit The Haunt

L

egendary Japanese punk rockers Shonen Knife carve through the mystical waters of eternity with a flashy and stimulating vessel. Slashing up punk, rock, pop and metal with a continuous underground edge, the band has a dynamic spirit that flashes, pulls, and curls one’s central nervous system into a bending and cherubic arch.

They cut their teeth in the early ‘90s with a pulsing Ramones-like garage stomp that infused a Beach Boys harmony with a Beatles-like melody, and toured with the likes of Nirvana and Mudhoney. Their last two albums Override and Adventure breathe fire with a ‘70s hard rock and metal aura. When morphed with their customary poppy bent, the results are righteously killer. Shonen Knife has always done things their own way: vibrant, wicked, and flat out joyous.

“The band has always been very DIY”, notes lead singer, guitarist and co-founder Naoko Yamano. “It’s very punk, but I’ve never wanted to put any political opinion into my lyrics, because I want people to feel happy listening to our music. Growing up I listened to American and British punk and pop bands like the Buzzcocks, The Jam, XTC, and the Ramones, and that inspired us to start the band.”

There’s an undeniable happiness to the totality of the band. It’s like they take the sharpest elements of underground music and put a special little shiny heart into them. This is personal and tactile music.

Their new material is arguably their best yet. After 20 plus albums the band has found another level, another dimension that showcases a style that is as edgy as it is luminescent. This new realm is most apparent in songs like “Bad Luck Song” and “Ramen Rock”, two behemoths off the 2014 rocker Overdrive, and “Calabash” off this year’s Adventure.

“Bad Luck Song was inspired by ‘70s hard rock like Bad Company and Thin Lizzy,” Yamano said. “When I started the band I didn’t really like hard rock, but things change, and now I really like it a lot.

The lyrics to that song are about the time I saw Jimmy Page by chance at an electrics shop in London, and afterwards, every time I listened to the Led Zeppelin song ‘Stairway To Heaven,’ I seemed to have a sort of bad thing happen.”

“Our new drummer Risa [Kawano] has been with since 2015,” Yamano continued, “and she’s a very powerful drummer. Her drumming makes our music more powerful and the lineup we

currently have is our best yet. It’s really great that all three of us can do lead vocals—the dynamic is very strong right now.”

A blazing sight live, Shonen Knife has a visual element that shimmers with flair and density. Sort of an avant-garde combination of modernity and urban fantasy, the band’s stage costumes are designed by original drummer (and then, bassist) and sister of Naoko, Atsuko Yamano, who still plays with the band when they tour through Los Angeles. The band orbits around their music with a visual aesthetic that adds to the fantastical depth. Like all the great punk bands, they dance in inspiring ways.

“Atsuko makes our stage costumes all by herself,” Yamano relayed. “We truly love to entertain our audience and wearing costumes is an important component to that. I like to make a unique world for our audience and I think the visual element is really crucial. I want people to enjoy our music as much as they can. If I can make people happy through our music—through

the vibration of the air—then I become happy.”

One thing’s for sure: listening to Shonen Knife puts a widening smile on your face. Kurt Cobain famously noted that we he saw them for the first time he “turned into a nine-year old at a Beatles concert.” There’s an intricate beyond level to the band’s driving music. Their spirit is

so large you can’t help but be swept away.

Pick up Adventure and crank it on your stereo—you’ll see what I mean. It’s sort of like where spikes meet sunshine: crushing and merry. Saturday night the band comes to blast The Haunt into the nexus dimension. Be there. •

Featured on NPR, PBS and in Rolling Stone Magazine, Ben Sollee’s unique folk music delves into social issues including poverty and environmental issues, on the reg. A native of Kentucky, the musician’s particularly passionate about the issue of mountaintop removal in coal mining, and has made several tours of Kentucky on his bicycle. In the Summer of 2009, he traveled 330 miles to the Bonnaroo festival with his supplies and cello strapped to his bicycle. Sollee eclectic palette merges classical artistry with bluegrass, jazz, and R&B elements.

The inspiring and amazing Alloy Orchestra is back at Cornell Cinema for a three-night, four-film engagement in celebration of the ensemble’s 25th anniversary. The avant-garde group began composing and performing their original scores for silent films way back in ‘91, playing a prominent role in reintroducing audiences to the joys of experiencing silent film merged with live music. The Cambridge-based trio has been making nearannual appearances at Cornell Cinema since the late ‘90s.

Bluegrass and the universe

ay out in the vast mountainous nether world of Montana, there’s a sky that reaches endless in the minds of its inhabitants.

Stretching far past the horizon there is a certain magic to the atmosphere of this land. Part western old-time and part progressive space explorers, Bozeman’s bluegrass stalwarts Kitchen Dwellers rub and ponder that sacred magic, infusing sounds from centuries past, and centuries ahead. The band expands mightily on traditional bluegrass, stretching into psychedelic, Celtic, and artful realms on the regular. There’s a sacredness to their music, an honesty that is as flexible as it is timeless. I caught up with guitarist and vocalist Max Davies recently, as the band’s motoring through a coast-to-coast tour that will see them stop by The Dock next Wednesday, November 9. Here’s part of the skinny.

Ithaca Times: How’s the touring going? What’s American looking like these days?

Max Davies: This tour is going great. We’ve covered a lot of ground and have been having a blast with our friends Twiddle, who are from Vermont.

of the country. You get to see a lot of America that not everybody does. We’ve gone from small ranch towns in Idaho to Portland, Oregon where the venue owner made sure the door was always locked because of break ins. One thing we’ve noticed, especially out here on the west coast, are the Donald Trump signs. He seems to have strong support out here, especially from the agricultural community.

IT: What is it about bluegrass, that makes it feel timeless: almost as if it’s part of dimension that has long since past?

MD: I think that comes from a couple things. The first is the acoustic quality of the music. When you combine all of these string instruments a certain sound invokes feelings and perhaps thoughts of the past. The sound of a mandolin or fiddle transports you to another time and place. The other element of bluegrass music would be the songs themselves. Many of these songs tell stories of lonesome cowboys or of a life in the hills. The majority of them have simple song structure that anybody can play. Bluegrass came to me as a social thing. People would get together and go around in a circle playing songs we all knew and if you didn’t it wasn’t too difficult to follow along. So I’m reminded of a time when people had to entertain themselves and they did that through playing music.

IT: There’s a certain speed to some of your music: do you look at it as an aggressive speed?

MD: I do. Bluegrass has a tendency to be played very fast. Tempo is everything when you are playing a fiddle tune. Shawn Swain our mandolin player is always trying to make sure that we are playing the correct tempo for the traditional songs; he’s the bluegrass nut of the band. We have a lot of influences

It’s fun to see how far we can take it. The ending of one of our songs has the band playing faster and faster. Once we reach the point where it feels like the wheels are going to fall off we bring it back. We’ve always joked we need more slow songs but it’s so fun to play fast, IT: Do you think even in today, with some much technology available to everyone everywhere, that the only way to make it as a band is to get out on the road: particularly for anti-pop music?

MD: I do, especially for anti-pop music. The industry has changed so much and is constantly changing. With all the streaming services that give you fractions of a cent for every song that gets played we haven’t seen that add up to anything significant yet. IT: What are you guys been listening to the most while on tour? Any album absolutely crucial to a tour’s success?

MD: Every band needs a late night driving album. One of the last times we drove back to Montana from California I started driving at 11pm and drove to about 8am. After we went over Donner Pass I put on Scratch Attack by Lee Perry and it was kind of surreal to be listening to this down tempo reggae as the sun came up and you’re completely sleep deprived. Everybody has his or her own taste in music and it can depend on who is driving. I like to listen to the radio when I drive and if Shawn is in the front seat you can bet we’re listening to bluegrass.

Sometimes we get on Spotify and run through ‘90s punk songs. There is always a healthy dose of Phish and the Grateful Dead too. • For the whole interview go to Ithaca.com
