he County Legislature’s Public Safety Committee last week recommended the Legislature take the steps necessary to proceed with a Law Enforcement Shared Services Study, including selection of a consultant to perform the study. The shared services study will examine opportunities for consolidation or sharing of police services involving the City of Ithaca, Tompkins County, and v illage police depar tments within the County that may opt to participate in the study.

The Committee, by unanimous vote, recommended acceptance of a grant award through the New York State Mu n ic ipa l Re st r uc t u r i ng Fu nd a nd t hat t he Center for Governmental Research (CGR), of Rochester, NY, be selec ted to u nder ta ke t he study.

It is expected that additional local dollars, beyond t he $50,0 0 0 g ra nt awa rd , will be needed to support the study.

CGR was the recommended choice of a 14-member intermunicipal Steering Committee made up of County, City, and village officials.

To m p k i n s C o u n t y i s ex pected to appropriate $10,000 from its contingent fund toward the study, while the City of Ithaca is expected to kick in an additional $10,000.

CGR is the same consulting firm as was recently selected by the Legislature to conduct a crimina l justice and jail population trend analysis for the Tompkins County Jail.

Celebrating Community Ties

ornell University President Hunter Rawlings addressed t he crowd at t he a nnua l Tow n-Gow n Awards last Saturday morning in the Kulp Auditorium at Ithaca High School, accentuating the need for effective education before college and saying that although Ithaca is indeed experience good times economically, the Town-Gown Awards are meant to celebrate the people who foster more subtle growth within the community.

“It’s not just employment, it’s not just jobs, it’s quality of life, and that’s what we are here to celebrate today,” Rawlings

said. “I think this is a terrific way to celebrate the people who make this community go.”

The ToGo awards, now in their sixth year, celebrate local partnerships and work done around the community. The first half of the event focused on acknowledging area partnerships that have produced positive results in their fields.

Legislator Martha Robertson was among those who expressed concern that no formal report was issued by the DOJ. Deputy Administrator Younger confirmed that there is no report or follow-up indicated, beyond what had been presented in the incident

after-action report. Rebecca Brenner, Deputy Supervisor of the Town of Danby, who participated in some of the technical assistance sessions, said she believes impact of the incident on children wasn’t adequately addressed by the schools and that better communication was needed between law enforcement and local officials.

Sheriff Ken Lansing acknowledged the communication issue, as had been referenced in his after-action report, and commented that the technical assistance activity was beneficial in that it provided a valuable outside expert perspective. Both he and County Administrator Joe Mareane said lessons learned from the incident have led to development of a plan and procedures that have been used in communicating to local officials and the community regarding subsequent incidents.

Both Sheriff Lansing and Legislator Jim Dennis expressed appreciation for the extensive amount of work that has been done over many months to analyze the situation and prepare for the future.

Any Hope to Spare for the Chapter House’s Return?

by Sebastian Mascaro, who had purchased the property for just over $2 million. The deed, filed with the county in May, lists a price of $850,000 for the land.

“Sebastian and I were going to rebuild on the existing site as potential partners, but the delays and cost of construction with all new compliance landmark, building codes, etc. kept increasing the cost and delaying the project,” Hoey wrote. “So Sebastian decided to accept the attractive offer of Goldman and sell and I fully supported that decision. I am still waiting for Jim Goldman with whom I have been corresponding and his designated real estate broker to develop a final plan and start construction and present a lease that makes economic sense. I plan to visit Ithaca in December or even near the end of Novem-

A Time To Be Humbled At Thanksgiving, mindfulness will be key.

This Thanksgiving I am grateful that the most divisive election in recent American history ended with as close to a tie as you can have in an election. I hope this outcome may, finally, inspire real change—even if it’s painful in the short term.

Now we have an opportunity to see each other: to see that each half of the United States has lived in disregard for the other, perhaps for decades. We have an opportunity to address serious questions, locally as wel l as g lobally, about justice, security, health, food, the economy a nd t he env i ronment for the benefit of all humanity.

We see a momentar y uptick in prejudicial and intimidating behavior designed to provoke us on all sides. Coercion doesn’t work; Coercion has eaten away the confidence we once had in government. Let’s

move beyond it. For people to consent, they must be convinced. At this moment, we don’t know how to successfully talk with each other. The communication we need is not just talking about ideas or policies. This is full-bodied communication, engaging head, heart, and gut, to use common language, and in more technical terms of human processing, engaging at once intellect, emotion, and viscera.

You probably already understand the terms, almost intuitively. Allow me on last romp through the last election, for illustrative purposes.

In terms of heady intellect, Hillary is the mind of rational policy prescription. She is a trail-blazing woman in a world of elite, cultured ideas and access to wealth, who avoided emotiona l displays a nd visceral responses.

She did not communicate comfortably or honestly. Perhaps her only visceral display was when she couldn’t hide her disdain for the “deplorables.” In terms of v iscera l response, Donald is the gut of reactive posturing. Those who feel alienated from the system see primarily his defiance, and it appeals to their guts in a way that defies rational analysis.

C

onsidering that Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, you’d think I’d have a better handle on the details. I’m reasonably sure the pilgrims staged some kind of banquet, presumably out of gratitude for the fact that only half of them died during the first three months of being here. I know that because the giant turkey in the Macy’s parade wears a hat that hasn’t been fashionable since the 1620s. And then I think one of the Wampanoag natives saw his shadow and there was six more weeks of winter. Like I said, it’s kind of a jumble in my mind. Still, there’s a lot to like about a long weekend of huge inflated cartoon characters, televised concussions, over-eating, the ritual stirring of the cauldron of family resentments and the Trampling of the Greedy on Black Friday at malls across the land.

This year, with the country about to be made great again, it would be a good time to take stock of the many things in our lives for which we should give thanks.

Let’s be grateful, for example, to the Electoral College. I went back to the Federalist Papers, and Alex-

ander Hamilton explained that it was designed to ensure “that the office of President will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications.” Whew! I’ll be honest, when Hillary Clinton won the popular vote but people started talking about ‘President-elect Trump’, I was more than a little worried, but clearly, when those folks vote on December 19, they’re going to do the right thing, and I really appreciate that.

We should all be thankful that we have the coolest mayor in the United States.

Just three months ago, I watched, transfixed in horror, as somebody popped a zit on someone else’s back on the Commons. I wish I were making that up. It traumatized me to the point that I contacted the Cornell Department of Statistical Science to do some probabilistic modeling for me. hen he turned 17 Richard Woh lgemut h joi ned t he Army and his first assignment was with the 101st Airborne Division. Later, he would spend more than 10 years in various positions with the Army Recruiting Command. During those years Richard and his now deceased wife, Donna, were stationed brief ly in Ithaca, before transfer to Hawaii. They returned to Ithaca in retirement nine years ago.

Richard’s Ithaca home, the base for the Wildlife Wishing Well Rehabilitation Center, now provides temporary R&R to a changing array of raccoons, skunks, bats, red and gray foxes, red, gray and f lying squirrels, possums,

woodchucks, mice, voles, chipmunks, cottontail rabbits, and snakes, plus permanent householders Max and Mitzie, the Cats, and Daisy the Dog. A current guest, Ash, arrived as a newborn raccoon, found in a chimney, barely able to breathe. Peter arrived with a large red tumor on his stomach; now healed he cavorts with Peter. The most recent registered guest is Sadie; injured by a car at night. Her palate and lower jaw are fractured and she lost many teeth. She has to be hand fed while she recovers, but Richard is optimistic that she will be able to return to her natural habitat in the Spring. Let’s also show some gratitude that the city is thinking about cutting out all those free hours of parking for that pestiferous horde of citizens, also known as customers, who have been clogging up our streets downtown during business hours.

I’m grateful for the Ithaca Beer Company, Gimme!, Cinemapolis, Wegmans, and the fact that we live in wine country, which is rapidly also becoming craft beer country. And how lucky are we that we sit on the shores 2.5 trillion gallons of fresh water, not to mention our underground aquifers?

We’re like the Saudi Arabia of water.

For now, anyway. Let’s pray that we stay under Secretary Palin’s radar...

Let’s be glad we still have a daily newspaper. The Ithaca Journal has been here for two hundred years. It published Civil War casualty lists, covered the visits to Ithaca of Eleanor Roosevelt, Frederick Douglass and

Harry Truman, and brought news of assassinations, impeachments and the moon landing. These days it’s edited and printed on post-it notes and the staff is down to four people who report news, answer the phones and empty the wastebaskets, but we still have a paper that lands on the doorstep more or less every day, which is more than New Orleans, or Birmingham, or Grand Rapids can say.

I’m grateful for Google. I lived 45 years without it, and now I Google things 200 times a day, which is half the national average. I really can’t explain how people survived in the Before Time. I’ll have to Google that.

I’m thankful that Ithaca’s the kind of place you’re actually proud to say you’re from. It’s looking like we’re going to become 10 square miles of reality surrounded by God knows what. People from other places have been known to come here for vacation, and some of them might decide to stay. I think we should thank each other for making the Ithaca brand so marketable.

Ash, Peter, and Sasha currently reside in the Infirmary, which will be transformed into the Nursery in the spring, where more than 50 neonates and infants have been cared for at a time. Most of them orphans. As many as 20 cages fit into the licensed Nursery, so some of the youngsters must double and triple bunk. During the period of highest demand in 2016 Richard and his devoted crew of marvelous volunteers had 67 bottle-fed babies at one time. Each baby had four to five feedings each 24 hours.

Nahgem (named for devoted volunteer Meghan) is a possum. Soft and sweet with guests, possums have 50 teeth; and females are observed to hiss when they are threatened. Male possums may roar at trespassers. Females give birth to up to 17 babies at a time; the tiny newbies appear very premature, like an embryo, at birth. Yet they are surprisingly strong and resilient as they climb up their mother’s body and then nest in her pouch after birth, where they will nurse peacefully for two to three months.

Bruno and Sasha Raccoon are adorable youngsters, now healthy and getting close to release in the wild. But before they can make that transition they will go through a carefully planned and charted period of “wilding up”.

They will be moved from the Nursery to the Prerelease Area, a small building where they are allowed to roam free with other raccoons. One wall is made of double-layer welded wire mesh; so they will be able to experience and get used to outdoor temperatures and the natural light of day and night. In addition to becoming accustomed to unregulated heat and cold, Richard’s patients learn to interact with other raccoons and improve their climbing skills. Animals from other regions will return to their original regions for this stage and return to the wild.

Keeping Wildlife Wishing Well operational takes lots and lots of hard work. Day after day for half the year, it takes two people four hours just to do the “washing up”. All feeding and water dishes, plus f loor pans, cages, every single piece of equipment used, litter pans, bottles—all get washed daily.

At the end of the year Richard prepares a report of more than 100 pages and he is accountable to the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Agriculture and Markets. Cleaning, feeding, documenting, answering inquiries, traveling, renovating, training and being trained; these tasks fill up Richard’s days and months. During busy times Richard may slip in some sleep between bottle feedings, but he shares no com-

plaints.

Residents who arrive as orphans in need go through several phases of rearing. They start in the Nursery, transfer to the Prerelease area, and then go to a Soft-release area, where they make a natural transition to independence in their natural environment.

Sometimes the few residents from this region who have completed the entire transition from Nursery to Release decide to come back and see how Richard and his team are doing after living on their own very briefly. They are released, go out and explore, and then come back. Maybe come back a few times, with longer and longer periods in the wild. Eventually they are weaned. Richard and the volunteers are patient; rehabilitated animals get to practice independence while in Soft-release (in whatever part of the state they head home to) as long as they need to. But the goal always remains return to the wild.

Still climbing trees (although almost every critter comes down on his or her own volition, he assures), toting 60 pound “pens” for humans to borrow, and use to transport injured wildlife, he maintains the healthy lifestyle and discipline he fine-tuned in his military life. Ingenius about cost-effective do-it-yourself repairs and remodeling, he has created a haven for defenseless wild animals.

But at a cost.

While Richard mentions only the satisfaction, and pleasure he and his tribe have with their guests, his time, energy and resources are stretched as Wishing Well Wildlife Rehabilitation Center’s reputation grows. The guests arrive with no funding, and no one is told there is no room at the inn. As people give thanks for their bounty at this time of year, well-wishers may be tempted to donate toward essential renovations which must be completed before Spring.

We need to move beyond this perfect storm of miscommunication. We, the American people, need to value and listen to each other, or we will continue to cultivate the very dishonesty and decision-making paralysis which most of us deplore. Now, we have another choice. Let’s look at what is required of good visceral, emotional, and intellectual communication. How can we achieve all three?

Visceral processing involves seeking behavior. We wish to feel the pleasure of curiosity, close observation, anticipation of something good, and longing. We constantly scan the environment for satisfaction and Th e

delight. Play elicits the pleasure of joy experienced through unrestrained roughhousing and unselfconscious action. Care evokes the pleasure of caretaking another, especially a parent to a child, or any loved one. Sexual intimacy and desire, sensuality, and physical touch reside here as well.

What frightens us about visceral communication is that rage, fear, panic, and lust all reside here as well. These are our natural reactions to physical, mental, and emotional threats. Emotional processing requires taking others seriously, especially being honest about conflict and uncomfortable emotions.

These skills produce heart connections, and we recognize accurately the range of emotions in ourselves and others. We can express empathy to demonstrate our connection across differences. The gold standard for emotional intelligence is regarding your enemy as your equal.

Intellectual processing is the easiest, and we need to resist overly relying on our heads.

When we are comfortably in our heads, thinking rationally, we search for logical connections, rely on standardized definitions and prefer simplicity and order, even to the point of idealism. The height of intellectual processing is non-attachment demonstrated through the absence of defensive visceral or emotional reactions when confronted with conflicting experiences, explanations or ideals. The gold standard of intellect is being able to entertain an idea and its opposite without getting upset.

A Great Community Disappointment December 3 would have been the date for Ithaca’s annual Alternative Gift Fair. Many residents will be disappointed to learn they won’t be able to provide charitable gifts to non-profit groups this year: Cornell’s Center For Transformative Action has cancelled the event–just giving notice in October with not enough time for someone else to pick it up.

For the past 12 years, families passed by gaily decorated tables touting the individual missions of 60 local nonprofit organizations.

As these “shoppers” learned more about the invaluable work being done in Ithaca by these committed groups, they pondered gift-giving decisions as to which nonprofits they wanted to support. In exchange for donations, supporters received handsome gift cards to honor friends and family. This special holiday event was especially fun and educational for children who collected brochures and chose their favorites. Many kids proudly used their savings as parents taught them about charitable giving.

In the light of this loss, please consider a holiday gift to a local charity you might have selected had the fair still been happening.

While your mailboxes may already be offering various booklets from international charity, let’s keep the goodwill here in Ithaca.

What it takes to mobilize a bell ringer army

here are some things we come to expect in November. The cold, the Christmas decorations that always seem to set themselves up way too early, the hearty home cooking and the stress that comes with it. And, in the background, the repetitive tinkling of a bell, its bearer bundled up warmly beside a bright red cauldron.

The dozens who come to ring the bell for The Salvation Army each holiday season don’t appear around town as the result of an uncoordinated effort: like any army, the Salvation Army doesn’t mobilize on its own and its volunteers don’t simply arrive with the snow. The group is assembled by hours of phone time, the capitalization of a town’s goodwill and spare time and, of course, a core group of army employees, like regional music director Ben Payton, to bring it all together.

A 20 year veteran of the army of salvation, Payton could be found last week in front of a massive day planner on the desk in the back of the office on 150 N. Albany St., phone to his ear and several stacks of yellow forms beside him with the names and numbers of all of last year’s volunteers. Payton has technically been on vacation the past several days, but with a limited staff on hand at the Salvation 8

Army, uses part of his time off to work the phones and fill out the schedules to ensure all 17 kettles around Ithaca are staffed at all times, from the Nov. 17 start date all the way through Christmas.

So, how many hours does it take to fill that massive planner?

“You have no idea,” Payton said. “From now until about Christmas Eve, it’s almost a full time gig.”

The hours people live Payton put in are vital to the local Salvation Army. Their largest (albeit, only) fundraiser of the year and only revenue stream beyond its thrift store on the southern stretch of Route 13, a large proportion of the organization’s paltry $400,000 budget comes from those little red kettles. Ithaca’s organization pulled in $70,000 to help fund their local operations last year but, with the right staffing levels, could potentially pull in six figures this year says the local organization’s local leader, Major David Dunham.

“If all you do is put a kettle out with nobody beside it, people will just walk by it,” Dunham said. “But if you’ve got somebody tinklin’ a little bell, someone might come by and say ‘alright, I’ll help.’ And when you get a buck here, a handful of quarters and dimes… it adds up.”

the Salvation Army’s mission since the holiday season of 1891 when Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee, distraught over San Francisco’s hungry, looked for a means to fund a free Christmas dinner for the city’s poorest. Within six years, 150,000 free Christmas Dinners were served up: all funded from money out of the kettles.

Today, those red kettles often serve the same purpose. For larger organizations, the money donated goes toward offering seasonally-related care, like Christmas food and toy baskets or gifts for residents of elder care facilities. Some even pay people to ring the bells, in case there is a gap in people available to volunteer. For smaller organizations like Ithaca’s, while the seasonal aspect of the fundraiser still has a role in the red kettle’s distinctive origins, the money raised has a grander role in the organization’s yearlong operations.

This is something Dunham has begun to get used to in Ithaca. A constantlysmiling man quick to laughter, Dunham arrived in Ithaca in July after years of service alongside his wife, Tina, as the service coordinators of the army’s Akron, Ohio operations. Married 37 years, the Dunhams have deep ties to the organization. They met at as counselors at the army’s summer camp and since, have served together in both Ohio and a brief

stint in Syracuse. With two kids, seven grandchildren and a Harley Davidson (Dunham is a founder of the Salvation Army’s Motorcycle Ministry, which does good deeds and outreach on steel steeds) Dunham seems to have reached a high point in his life: In his sparsely-decorated office, his most distinctive display is his computer’s wallpaper, which he is quick to show. It’s a scene of the family hanging out at a lake in Ohio, a scene of the family that looks like a high-resolution Norman Rockwell take on an idyllic afternoon in the countryside.

“They call ‘em the golden years,” Dunham jokes. “But I don’t see anything golden in getting old.”

In Ohio, the job was a little bit different than in Ithaca. There, the Dunhams were responsible for housing the homeless, doing so with the help of more than thirty employees and a multimillion dollar budget. There, he had several people to write to the federal government for funding, helping to bolster an array of services that were as far-reaching as they were vital to Akron’s seemingly forgotten people.

They operated their own social services department, a rehabilitation center and, of course, providing housing to those who needed it most.

The Ithaca organization’s mission differs greatly, primarily for lack of resources. His office is split, half the room dedicated to storing what couldn’t be kept in the food pantry. And in the building, staff is significantly smaller than he’s used to: where he once oversaw dozens of workers and hundreds of volunteers, he serves the needs of Ithaca with a skeleton crew: one kitchen cook (who is also the janitor) a part-time secretary and the Dunhams.

“We don’t have a lot of money but we have a lot of heart,” Dunham said. “If anyone walks in here for a service they need that is rather niche, they’ll find a welcoming and warm place.”

As for what they do with limited numbers and a small budget? The answer to that tends to vary.

“What we do is partner with people in the community,” Dunham said. “Whatever they can’t do for themselves, we do.”

Ecovillage at Ithaca was given a ToGo for their work with the Cornell Sustainability Office staff and the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future at Cornell, among other organizations. Their programs, generally named Learn at Ecovillage, are dedicated to teaching students research methods regarding sustainability issues and then use those methods to yield real-world results working with outside organizations. Efforts are also being made to educate high school

students and minorities about sustainability techniques.

The final collaboration ToGo was presented to Cornell’s Public Service Center’s Translator-Interpreter Program with the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes. The two have paired up to help immigrants, or those not as familiar with English or the American healthcare system, understand the common practices of cancer care in the US. This helps patients and their families become more aware of the type of crucial questions they need to ask their doctors. No other such program exists nationwide.

Her work regarding the problematic deer population of Cayuga Heights was praised for its balance and fairness.

Outgoing Foodnet executive director Stephen Griffin was awarded a ToGo for his work in expanding and improving the Foodnet program, including introducing drivers that deliver meals to senior citizens in Tompkins County and the surrounding region. Amy Truman, dean of student life at TompkinsCortland Community College, was also recognized for her 36 years of work at the school, serving in the classroom and as a faculty leader.

Gwen Wilkinson was awarded a ToGo for her work as Tompkins County District Attorney, a position she left this year, a tenure highlighted by her advocacy of sensible drug policy reform and domestic violence prevention. Nate Shinigawa, a former Tompkins County legislator, received a ToGo for his work in that spectrum, specifically his fight on behalf of workers’ rights and his service as chair of the Public Safety Committee.

Founders and former owners of the Shortstop Deli, Albert and Cindy Smith, were honored for their work with the community’s youth, which has continued even after selling the restaurant last year. Jennifer Engel was awarded a ToGo as well for her work with the Ithaca Public Education Initiative, among other areas.

The final ToGo of the ceremony was given to Dammie Herath, who recently retired as executive director of the Women’s Oppor tunit y Center af ter 30 years with the program, which is dedicated to helping low-income women with a path out of poverty through education and job preparation.

To bring the ceremony to a close, Ithaca City School District Superintendent Luvelle Brown presented Rawlings with a gift, a copy of the Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian Wars, a book that Rawlings has studied and analyzed for many years, eventually writing his own book on the historical work. The book will stay in the Ithaca High School library.

“Whenever someone walks by this particular book, they’re going to think of you,” Brown joked. “It’s nice and beautiful, and looks kind of old, classy, and only a few people in the world understand it.”

The book will also contain an inscription honoring Rawlings, who has served as Cornell’s president three different times, this time stepping in as a stop-gap after the death of President Elizabeth Garrett in the spring. Cornell named University of Michigan provost Martha Pollack its new president last week.

Airport Readies For Jet Traffic An addition of a second jet bridge is in the works for Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport, the Tompkins County Legislature recently authorizing the issuance of up to $1 million in serials bonds and notes to potentially fund the purchase if need be.

Michael Hall, Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport manager, said that he is hoping to secure state grant money; if that fails, the airport will seek other sources of grant funding.

“Bonding is last resort, but it’s a critical step that allows us to proceed,” Hall said.

He explained that the airport could immediately begin the acquisition process for the bridge if he can secure the legislature’s approval.

Hall said the refurbished jet bridge will be the same model as the airport’s already existing bridge to make it easier to service, and that once its parts are replaced it will be “like a new bridge.” Its expected lifespan

would be about 20 years.

The second bridge is necessary because the airlines–particularly American Airlines, which recently ceased service to Elmira and Binghamton–have decided recently to consolidate Southern Tier service in Ithaca, he said, adding that the decision is at least partly due to the fact that Ithaca’s customers request flights that are unusually global in nature. American and United airlines have announced all jet service to the area will come through Ithaca starting in 2017, but the second bridge would be required for them to do so. If everything goes according to plan, Ithaca will regularly see jets seating up to 125 passengers flying into the airport. Smaller jets seating only 50 will continue to be replaced by larger jets that seat 60 or 90, said Hall.

Legislator Martha Robertson (D-Dryden) asked at a recent meeting with Hall if this would bring ticket prices down.

In response, Hall said the biggest struggle for the airport has not been lack of demand but rather a lack of available seats.

“They’re going to manage their business the way they manage their business,” Hall said of the airlines, “but when we have more available seats the general notion is we would be able to hold our own and become more affordable.”

That afternoon, the legislature voted on two resolutions: one that approved an amendment to the 2017-2021 Capital Program to acquire and install the bridge, and another authorizing the bond. Both passed with a vote of 13 to 1 with Legislator Dooley Kiefer (D-Lansing) voting against both.

“My displeasure is not with the airport or the airport manager,” she said, “but with the process.”

Kiefer was not the only legislator who felt that the steps taken in the approval process was lacking in due consideration. Robertson said that she and other legislators who do not sit on any of the committees that have already considered the resolution should have had more time to consider it,

given that it represents a significant policy change. She pointed out that the county does not usually put property tax money into the airport with the one exception of $125,000 each year for the last three years to help cover overhead. She said that when she won her seat on the legislature in a race against incumbent Sean Vallely in 2001, the outgoing legislator told her that the number one issue he was worried about was that the legislature would have to put taxpayer money into the airport to keep it afloat.

“This is big deal,” Robertson said. “I want to make sure taxpayers know this is an exception to the rule.”

fter 37 years in business, local kitchen supply staple Now You’re Cooking is closing its doors.

Jerry Martins, co-owner and operator of Now You’re Cooking with his business partner, Barbara Lynn, moved the shop to its current spot in the Commons in 1994 after 15 years on South Cayuga Street. They initially had the inspiration after discussing it during a night out with friends, and the idea grew from there.

Martins said they have been able to keep the partnership alive this long through a combination of trust and respect, defying the predictions of many people they met along the way.

“It was a specialty business when it first started out,” Martins said. “As with most small businesses, the whole point is to become mainstream, and gourmet cooking has now become mainstream.

There’s a lot more competition.”

An official closing date has not yet been set. Generally speaking, Martins said small businesses have struggled as a result of the advent of internet shopping, particularly as massive marketplace sites like Amazon.

But Martins also said the exhaustive construction that had dominated the Commons was a harsh burden on the stores there. The construction process had initially been announced to take just a year, but ended up taking nearly two and a half to complete. Most businesses in the Commons and immediately surrounding it have faced at least some economic downturn as a result of the lack of access

for a span of about two weeks, Martins said, after construction was finally completed and business picked up. However, he said the new parking meters installed around the city dealt a final blow to their rehabilitation effort, adding the resulting backlash from commuting shoppers who now found the mall a much easier option spelled the end of his business.

“It just kept comi ng,” Martins said, about the wave of challenges. “Until we just can’t do it anymore […] I’m devastated.”

So far, Martins said, thinking about what the future holds is too difficult. Looking back though, he said he feels the store served as not only a business, but a way to connect with the community and build relationships with the city and the people.

“Small business ownership is people who are working six or seven days a week, giving a lot back to the community in all sorts of ways,” he said.

“It’s hard work, you don’t make a fortune but you make a living, and part of what makes it good is feeling like you’re in the community.”

Developer To City: Faster Process Needed or Else

I

n a recent update on the years-old plan to move forward with the Old Library Site Redevelopment project, the developer said if things do not progress faster they may withdraw from the project.

The saga continued last Friday as Travis Hyde Properties and Holt Architects presented their current construction proposal and answered questions from community members at an Old Library Committee meeting.

The redevelopment of the library site has been a signif icantly controversial issue throughout the last few years, w it h t he choice of Travis Hyde as the primary handlers of the project met with contention from City of Ithaca residents last year.

Lifelong, a Frost Travis senior citizen education facility, had initially agreed to sell part of their property to Travis Hyde for use in the new apartment building as a way to partially alleviate Lifelong’s financial difficulties.

Lifelong then decided to drop out of the project, but it was announced at the meeting that they have now returned. Lifelong’s cooperation comes contingent with use of the apartment building’s community room, though they will cover operating costs of said room and control its usage schedule.

The current iteration of the plan would include 57 units, with 104 bedrooms.

Plans to conserve space and build higher instead of outwards were met with resistance from the Ithaca Landmarks Preservation Committee. Construction has been further complicated by the location of the site, inside the Historic District of Ithaca, which has led to numerous redesigns as it moved concurrently through both the city’s planning and development board and the Ithaca Landmarks Preservation Committee.

the proposed construction. Travis Hyde is considering utilizing some portion of the first floor of the building to serve as parking space in its proposal.

The development team plans to present their proposals to the ILPC and the Planning Committee in December. Travis Hyde President Frost Travis, when asked about a “drop-dead date”, said he felt that if there was not a Certificate of Appropriateness in place by the following meeting in January, his company may have to move on from the project.

“I feel like we’ve given it our best shot,” Travis said. “Someone with deeper pockets than me is going to have to step up.”

After the meeting, he elaborated that if he felt the project was on the verge of being approved after the January meeting and only needed tweaking, he would consider staying involved.

iven that I was working outside in a t-shirt two days ago and today there is a foot of snow in my yard, this seems as good a time as any to talk about transitions.

While some sports teams have already transitioned fully from the fall to winter sports season, others are gearing up to make dreams come true. Scott Wandell is one of the football coaches at Newark Valley (our daughters are travel softball buddies).I asked him at a tournament back in July how the Cardinals were looking coming into the season. Scott got one of those glassy-eyed looks, and he said “We look good… really good.”

Really good indeed. The Cardinals are undefeated, they have had their way with virtually every opponent, and on Saturday, they play for the state championship against Ogdensburg. I love it when our neighboring communities get to experience the thrill of such a season, and my cousin (Teresa Bennett) has a grandson (Caden) playing on the team! I wish Newark Valley the best.

Now, onto transitions in the coaching world. Admittedly, I have given Mike Welch a lot of ink recently, and not one

person has complained. Mike spent the vast majority of his career at Ithaca College, he oversaw a classy and highly respected program, and his “riding off into the sunset” retirement is a thing to be celebrated. Not all coaches are so fortunate.

I have known many coaches over the years who have bounced around from college to college, and while it can surely be a lot of fun to see new places and meet new people, it can also be very stressful. Coaches have families, their kids develop friendships, and their spouses build careers of their own. Packing up and moving two or three times during their children’s school years can be very difficult, and I know several local athletes who were very sorry to see a coach and his family leave Ithaca a few months ago.

While it is the nature of the coaching profession to be ready to roll with the changes, it is nonetheless very challenging.

On the other side of that coin, I hope that Brian Earl is able to build the Cornell men’s basketball program up to be a perennial Ivy title contender and that he will be here for the long haul. That said, I hope fans are patient, and I think back

to a similar hire back in 2000, when Steve Donahue took over after being an assistant at Penn for a decade. Donahue still had a lot of work to do in terms of learning to sell Cornell to recruits, but he knew plenty about the Ivy League. It took him a few years, but when the Big Red won three consecutive Ivy titles and made it to the Sweet 16 in 2010, it was all worth it.

Like Donahue, Earl brings a depth of knowledge about the Ivy League, having been an assistant at Princeton for nine seasons. He also played for the Tigers, giving him yet another “insider’s” view.

His family is steeped in the sport. His father, Denny, played at Rutgers alongside the late Jim Valvano and his brother, Dan, played at Penn State and is now the head coach at VMI. Earl also was named the Ivy League Player of the Year in 1999 and the 95 wins to which he led the Tigers over the course of his four year career remain a league record.

Like any new coach, Earl will experience a transitional time of his own.

Given the Big Red players were recruited

by Earl’s predecessor, Bill Courtney, it is understandable if the team takes some time to gel under Earl’s leadership, learning his system. It will take some time for it to really feel like “his” program, but that’s the way it is and Big Red fans will be willing to give Earl and his players time to build it up.

In the meantime, I hope fans turn

Anne Bialke at the Ulysses Philomathic Library

I

n 1976, the late American modernist critic Clement Greenberg took part in a symposium on “Art Criticism and Art Today” at the London gallery Art Net. Responding to a query from an audience member, he repeats his—then and yet still controversial— dictum that quality in art is something that one has to recognize and accept, in whatsoever form it might be found. He speaks of his work jurying regional art exhibitions. Straight faced, he replies that while he would prefer “abstract or advanced” work, he would often find himself choosing “flower paintings by little old ladies.” Mock sexism (I think) aside, it remains a powerful statement of purpose.

Trumansburg painter Anne Bialke does floral still-lifes—typically small, delicately brushed, and decorously framed. She also paints natural and rural landscapes, as well as the occasional portrait or genre scene. It’s a crowd-pleasing approach.

As she told me in a recent interview, she doesn’t see herself as an “innovator.” “Its my personal stamp or slant” on a traditional approach, she explained. “It’s not new subject matter, it’s not new techniques, it’s not anything groundbreaking.”

Her style is grounded in the European and American realism of the nineteenth-century.

She feels a particular affinity for Impressionists, particularly the lesser-known work of American practitioners. In general, these artists were more conservative than their French counterparts— less eager than someone like Monet to dissolve their subjects into brushwork.

Although Impressionismhas been out of

sync with “advanced” taste for at least a century, it continues to be popular around the world— and, of course, in the Finger Lakes region. In the hands of its most talented practitioners, such work can overcome any impulse one might have to dismiss it as reactionary or overly commercial.

“Gesture and Movement: Oil Paintings by Anne Bialke” recently opened at the Ulysses Philomathic Library in Trumansburg, where she has exhibited in the past. The exhibit, which remains up through January 6, encompasses thirty-three oil on masonite pieces of varied sizes and proportions. Both her floral paintings and landscapes are well represented.

Growing up in Northern Minnesota, Bialke was interested in the visual arts from an early age. She began pursuing art more seriously in high school and was motivated to major in the subject at Minnesota State University Moorhead.

She worked for several years as an illustrator and graphic designer before pursuing an M.F.A. in Illustration from Syracuse University, which she completed in 1990. Pausing after giving birth to triplet daughters, she soon pushed her way back towards art.

Her career as a professional oil painter began in 1995, when she took a weeklong plein air workshop offered by the Arnot Art Museum in Elmira, co-taught by longtime Corning painters Thomas Buechner and Martin Poole.

With the encouragement of Poole, Bialke submitted work soon afterwards to the West End Gallery in Corning: a fixture of the local gallery scene, where both Buechner and Poole both exhibited (and continue to be exhibited). She was accepted and has been part of the close-knit

group ever since.

Like most of the artists represented by the Corning gallery, Bialke’s approach is unabashedly commercial and decorative. Her decorous touch serves her well at the Philomathic. Although a grouping of panels have been hung in the main reading area, the visitor has to walk around the perimeter of the small library’s main room to see everything.

Although all of Bialke’s “florals” demonstrate a dexterous and inviting touch, a few stand out as particularly evocative. The leaves and pale purple blossoms that line the broad expanse of Iris Chorus stand out anthropomorphically against the hurried dashes of yellow, orange, and green that fill the background like a curtain.

Rose-tinged underpainting suffuses Poem for Yellow Iris and Summer Abundance with a lovely glow. In Iris, thinly painted, exuberantly brushy strokes of blue, green, and purple are accented in more thickly pigmented flowers of pale yellow and white. The pale pink and purple blossoms of Abundance—surrounded by shadowed leaves pointing every which way—seem to emerge mysteriously from pink air.

Three unframed Pemaquid Rock Study paintings hang one-atop-the-other. Portrayals of Maine seashore, they bring out less familiar dimensions of the artist’s vision. Taken as a sequence, they create a series of rhymes and rhythms. For example, the pale gray highlight of a boulder in the top panel—the only one to continued on page 20

feature a horizon line—is echoed in a pool of white froth in the piece below.

Interestingly, Bialke is showing a grouping of small paintings, art books, and art supplies in a long wood and glass case near the library’s back entrance. The paintings, both framed and unframed, depart from most of her other work here in depicting rural houses and roads as well as

nature—even some sailboats and a scenic lighthouse. The books nod towards some of her influences with volumes on the American Impressionists, the Canadian Group of Seven, and Beuchner’s How I Paint: Secrets of a Sunday Painter.

Hung near the case are four works painted since last year that show a purposive departure from the artist’s signature style. They are abstract, visionary—seemingly landscapes of the mind.

but cluttered view. Centered slightly leftof-center, two bare trees stand out crisply against the murky foliage, dark blackish and pale yellow-green, that fills most of the background. One, to the left, is a cool, luminous white. The other, on the right, is a foggy cyan with pale highlights that seem to melt into the spots of sky scattered here and there across the scene.

a full-length portrait. The latter is particularly striking, imagining a tangle of draped branches in a wildly expressionistic matter that recalls certain monotypes by the Ithaca-affiliated printmaker Christa Wolf. Thinly painted in austere but striking colors, the approach is robustly physical.

Roughly square, Towers of Gold is incantatory, lit-up with flame-like autumn foliage playing off of patches in assorted purple-blues. Vertical trunks and drips create an intricate striated rhythm towards the middle of the panel, while shadowy purple trees and shrubs crowd the foreground. It’s an exciting piece.

“Feeling a little bit stifled,” Bialke started these experiments in abstraction early last year. Of her need to find new directions, she explained “You can just box yourself into a corner painting the same thing in the same way over and over again....you’re just trying to recreate your successes instead of moving on into something else.”

But she also admitted, “I love abstraction too, once in a while, but I always get pulled back to representing the world in a way that people recognize.”

These works invite comparison with the work of two Bialke daughters, Madeleine and Audrey, both impressive young painters. All three showed together—along with third sister Julia, whose paintings I’ve never seen—as “Bialke Women X 4,” held at the Trumansburg library in 2010.

Madeleine took part in a four-person exhibit in the fall of last year at the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts where her dramatically expressionistic landscapes more than held their own against more veteran artists. Earlier this year, she completed a two-year M.F.A. program at Boston University and has since—following scores of hopeful young artists—moved to Brooklyn.

Audrey currently shares a corner of her mother’s attic studio in the family’s Trumansburg farmhouse. She showed a selection of oils at the Philomathic this past spring.

She is currently taking part in a sixartist employees’ exhibit at the Finger Lakes Cider House in Interlaken, NY, where she’s showing work done at an artists’ residency this past summer in Wales. In a series of small, quickly executed landscape oils, she has made what appears to be a dramatic leap. Thinly painted, smudgy, and nearly monochromatic, they recall the monotype prints of Edgar Degas.

Although it might not always be clear at first encounter, the work of these three Bialkes shares considerable common ground. This is evident particularly in the care and variety with which they work the mechanics of paint, building up thin layers and thicker strokes with aplomb.

My deepest affinity remains with the work of the younger Bialkes, with their less pretty and ever-evolving approaches.

(Which is not to say that I love everything they do.) Although I take the notion of the avant-garde to be a rather outworn one, a youthful preference for the “difficult” or the unusual is one that dies hard. This is my first time seeing a large number of Anne Bialke’s paintings in person. They are growing on me. •

Death Boogie is a vibrant and powerful hit

D

arian Dauchan throws a seismic jolt into the post-election blues with Death Boogie, a spectacle brimming

with the poetry of resistance and the always precarious pulse of freedom. Bravo to the Kitchen Theatre for bringing this muchneeded blast of theater our way.

Boogie is the multi-media hip-hop tale of a schmo named Victor Spartan, a worker on the clock with a bruiser of a big

brother named Johnny. Johnny’s death and dreams disrupt Victor’s life moving him to “metamorphosis” as he discovers his courage and stands up to the wrath of the Emperor.

If this sounds a bit like a comic strip, it is. Dauchan plays against the stark and engaging comic book illustrations of David Ayllon (put into motion by Room 404 Media). Dauchan’s vocal stylings, beatboxing and looping skips across the waves of accompanists Mathew “Mattviolinist” Silvera on electric violin and Desmond Bratton on upright acoustic bass, recreating the arrangements of Dauchan’s band The Mighty Third Rail, who originated Death Boogie back in 2011.

If Hamilton has made the hip-hop musical a national phenomenon, there are plenty of antecedents in slam poetry, spoken word, performance art by Robbie McCauley, the works of Will Power, frequent Kitchen performer Brian Dykstra and Ithaca College alum Lenelle Moïse, to name a few. Moïse is another who uses the multi-vocality of live looping to create complex rhythms and play past against present.

Dauchan is whip-smart in this medium, while dropping in a half-dozen larger than life characters–Victor, Johnny, Prometheus, General Pain, a POW, DD Captain Dapper and the Emperor–in dizzying procession.

As evinced by this year’s award of the National Book Award for Young People’s literature to John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell for March 3, the graphic novel has also become a vehicle of social protest and the personal imagination (evi-

Let’s mention here that Boogie also has its laughs: wonderful gut tearing laughs, as the terrifying figures Dauchan conjures up are still in the vein of comic monstrosities.

In fact, the story is deliberately mythic: a hero on a vision quest. The weaving of this story through hip-hop and comics allows it to be remade and forged in this generation’s metaphysics.

Along the way Dauchan punctures the compliant life of wake, work, eat, consume television, (masturbate), sleep. He interrogates the “enhanced” interrogations that breed a terrorist; he visits the incessant bombings of our imperialist wars; mourns the death of black men in war; savages the disappointments of the election booth; somehow threading in a silver string of hope through all the devastation. The writing is eloquent, the physicality subtle and electric, transitions and resting places for the audience chosen with acumen.

In the end the author-performer suggests, if we are willing to dance with the angel of death, we may find our way out of the maze. (In an interview Dauchan said “Death Boogie is a metaphor for having the courage to stand up and fight for what you believe in, in spite of the risk, whether it be persecution or even death.”)

Dauchan’s particular style of hiphopping is heavily jazz-inflected, as the instruments of his band attest. One is reminded of the Beat poets themselves, or the mythologizing of Sun Ra (the pilot DD Captain Dapper, flying Victor up past paranoia and other hazards, especially comes as a blast from the past.

This is powerful theater powerfully delivered at a necessary time. Grab it while you can. •

Queue News Part Two Thanksgiving 2016 edition

iscovering George Carlin and Frank Zappa were two of the key moments of my youth, those formative years when I was figuring out who I was. We listened to Zappa all through high school; I guess the gateway FZ album for me was Sheik Yerbouti. He was weird, he was hilarious, he was confrontational and it was really only years later that I appreciated how complex and challenging his music was. And he did so many different kinds of music, he knew he could never satisfy even his most hard-core fans.

So it might seem odd that Thorsten Shute’s Eat That Question: Frank Zappa in His Own Words is a weird media jumble all its own, that it approaches Zappa not so much through his music but through TV interviews, film clips and concert footage from TV shows. (You won’t see any of his 70’s SNL appearances or his hosting gig, widely considered one of the show’s worst episodes due to Zappa making a big deal out of reading the cue cards.) Unless the song in question comes up in conversation, no effort is made to identify individual songs.

There’s still a wealth of good stuff here, because Zappa may have been a reluctant interview, but he usually had something interesting to say, from the ways MGM Records censored his albums to his wrangling with Tipper Gore and the PMRC record-rating scandal of the late ‘80s.

There’s a brief clip of Frank on The Mike Douglas Show that makes you want to see more, and an amazing clip of a young clean-shaven Zappa playing a bicycle with pre-recorded electronic noises and live band on an early Steve Allen show. Seeing that was like seeing early bits of Carlin from his pre-‘70s “straight” career: the voice was there from the beginning.

I love movies about the making of music, whether it’s The Commitments or That Thing You Do! Right now, no one’s making better movies about music than John Carney (Once, Begin Again). I wouldn’t be surprised if his new film Sing Street inspires some kid out there to pick up an instrument and start a band.

Set in the ‘80s to a great soundtrack that includes The Cure and The Jam, the film focuses on this kid named Conor

(Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) with a crummy home life who gets sent to an oppressive school. He knows some guitar chords, and when he sees this pretty girl (Lucy Boynton) across the street from school, he tells her he has a band and asks if she would like to be in a music video.

Now, all he has to do is start a band.

He rounds up some other kids, gets some good advice on music from his older brother (Jack Reynor), and sets about learning some Duran Duran songs.

There’s a nice nod to The Commitments here, with Maria Doyle Kennedy as the kid’s mom. But what sets Sing Street apart from something like The Commitments is that the kid and his band

quickly move past playing other people’s songs. They make the crucial realization that they have to write their own songs. It could be about a dancer, or a painter. In that way, Sing Street transcends being a movie about music, and becomes a movie

about the act of creativity.

Climbing the Eternal Mountain Cortland’s Unknown Woodsman aim higher

ncasing the soul-fronted interior of Cortland rockers Unknown Woodsman is a shiny and solid patchwork of ‘70s blues and funk. The band’s musical form is one of spirited direction, stuff that focuses on curly R&B grooves, waves of shimmering guitar, and a sort of natural smoothness.

These guys aren’t in any rush. They play with the dexterity of seasoned pros, and have an affinity for sunshine-like pop.

In smaller print, at the bottom of that list, is written: “and three unknown woodsmen.” Reflected in the humble anonymity of the woodsmen is an inner acceptance of the changing world, where names and events may disappear into the past, but deeds and their effects in the hearts and minds of others live forever.

IT: Is pop a dirty word, or do you feel connected and strengthened by its parameters?

Zac Doob: We make music that resonates with us, and that we enjoy playing.

There are characteristics of music and songwriting that contribute to what makes something popular. As a band looking to connect with as many people as possible, it’s our hope that others share in what we believe is successful about our music.

IT: What’s important to you guys, from a song standpoint? What makes a great song? And do you think you’ve written any?

ZD: There are so many ways to qualify what makes a song great, but boiling it down to the simplest definition would be a song that connects with someone. That connection is personal and could be related to any number of aspects of the song. A great song could be one where someone can relate to the message and draw parallels to their own life. Another song may be great because it grooves so hard it moves you. Some just have catchy melodies that get stuck in your head. There are so many flavors of great, and yes, we’ve written a few.

IT: You guys are combining a lot of distinct styles in your songs, is there a conscious direction to include a cross-section of forms, or do you guys play (or approach music) in a more natural and free sort of way?

ZD: The five of us have been exposed to a multitude of genres throughout our lives and our music is simply a reflection of that. We each have unique connections to a variety of different bands and musicians, and those connections naturally contribute to our sound. This isn’t something we think about or plan.

IT: How’d the band come together, and when did you find the connection that really jelled the band and the direction you’d take?

UW: Casey [King] and Phil [Muka] have been playing music together since they were kids. Pete [Dawes] joined the band after meeting Casey and having a conversation about how lame Journey was after Steve Perry joined. Josh [Tracy] went

from being a fan to being our drummer after the original drummer moved out west.

Doobs was working on another project at Studio Zoot where we recorded our album, played on a few tracks, and then became a permanent member of the band after we played a show and realized the songs were not nearly as good without him.

IT: Live, what’s the mindset; how do the songs evolve, and is there a lot of improvisation that goes on?

ZD: It really depends on the show. If we have a short set, we tend to keep the tunes tightly structured and focused. With longer sets, we love to open things up and see where the music takes us. We pay attention to the audience and respond accordingly.

When people are clearly into to a particular groove, we’ll stay there longer. We all love to improvise and some of the most exciting music we’ve made was born out of freeform exploration. With that said, we place a lot of value on songwriting and aim to deliver a colorful and energetic performance each time we hit the stage.

IT: Who are some of the bands you guys listened to when you were creating your early material, and what’s really sparking your interest these days?

ZD: It’s tough to recall what we were listening to back in the day, but some bands we’ve been into lately are: Pete Dawes (Bass): German Doom Metal and bands like Wight and Roto; Casey King (Lead Guitar): Frank Ocean and The Cat Empire; John Tracy (Drums): Animals as Leaders and various reggae/rock like 311; Zac Doob (Keys): Snarky Puppy, Vulfpeck, early Jamiroquai; Phil Muka (Vocals/Guitar): Tedeschi Trucks Band, Tauk, and Eric Krasno Band IT: What venues and clubs did you cut your teeth at, and do you feel pretty connected to the central New York music scene?

ZD: We’re all native central New Yorkers, so yeah - we feel pretty connected here.

While we’ve played numerous times at several venues, there aren’t any that stand out as having “cut our teeth” at. We’re fortunate to live in such a culturally rich area with so many great opportunities to play.

The volume of talented musicians in central New York is astounding and it’s great to see so many people going out to support the scene. •

Spirit of Dance is Alive at IC Winter Bodies at Ithaca College

I

only spent about an hour and a half seeing and sampling the various dance pieces that comprise Ithaca College’s latest dance concert, and I was exhausted as I left the campus.

IC only stages dance concerts every other year, so on a Sunday afternoon some weeks before the performances, there is a palpable excitement and drive in the air at Dillingham Center. Various contingents of choreographers, crew and dancers shuttle between various dance studios, showing off the results of their weeks of work for the press.

– and at one point a wedding party forms, with one of the dancers coming down the aisle wearing a long curly wig embedded with Tampax boxes that forms its own train.

“This piece deconstructs the identities we perform as women, not only personally but also historically and culturally. It’s a poetic look at herstory: part satire, part expose and part celebration,” said Gilmour.

“At its root, it was inspired by my daughter,” she says, looking at her daughter sitting in the studio. “I try to imagine the world in which I want her to live.”

Amy O’Brien’s In a Particular Way explores habits.

O’Brien’s piece begins with her cast of dancers seated around a rectangular platform. As the dance begins, one dancer takes on a movement or a kinetic idea, and soon the others are imitating and then fragmenting, starting their own movements that then pass on to other performers, and so on. Only a few times do the dancers actually connect; most of their “habit-forming”, as it were, happens in isolation.

“How and why do we form habits?” she asks. “It is a mystery. What can we learn about ourselves by taking a critical look at our habits?”

T

here are no vacations anymore. No more deals, no free time, no excuses, and surely no extended mind breaks.

What we’re presented with now is work— hard work, and lots of it. Most importantly, a sculpted ethic must be applied to everything we ingest, particularly with forms like music, film, art, and literature. These creative necessities are instrumental in uplifting morale, forging stronger dimensions, and building a more cohesive overall aesthetic. It’s not enough to “enjoy” something anymore. We must derive from these bases a fundamental appreciation of the philosophy of action. We must demand a higher realm. The snow has fallen, and it is silent in its white blanket of vision.

Make the trek to the State of the Art Gallery on West State Street at some point this week. You’ll be face to face with large and brilliant renditions of varying endangered species. Vibrant, warm, and immense, Shirley Hogg’s paintings have a particular Renaissance feel to them. They exist as visual intimacy with a hard-lined philosophical narrative. The destruction of animals for profit and enjoyment is not acceptable—it’s beyond horrific. This show has a special light that hopefully nudges you towards investing more time into fact checking animal practices. You owe it to yourself to know what’s really happening out there.

Most of us probably grew up carving Led Zeppelin symbols into something wooden (well, if you’re over 36 you probably did). This London born proto-metal, progressive rock group tore up a giant sized crater in the musical landscape from the late sixties to the early eighties.

A bunch of bands are teaming up with Ithaca Health Alliance for a Zeppelin benefit show this Saturday at The Haunt.

Count The Blind Sports, Achilles Last Stand, and Mudshark among some of the acts. This is the sort of event that foreshadows the sustainable future we need to envision, because we’re all going to have to lean on each other a lot more in the upcoming years. So this is a no-brainer.

I certainly don’t recommend anything that makes you escape without using your brain (so forget most Hollywood films past 2003).

I’d recommend some brain twisters like Hiroshi Teshigahara’s Woman in the Dunes, and Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker. These two films slice into the cerebral cortex and administer complex patterns of un-learning. That is, you must work to rearrange the process of normality. Truly, two works of art.

Check out Ole Christian Madsen’s Flame and Citron. An epic fictionalized tale based on true events, the film stars Thure Lindhardt and Mads Mikkelsen as two Danish resistance fighters during Nazioccupied Denmark in World War II. It’s a moving and unforgettable film, stretched with avant-garde tendencies and a powerful message to boot. Everyone needs to
