A new line in Ithaca’s zoning code could clear space for a developmental grey area– brew pubs–to be allowed to establish themselves downtown. Last week, t he cit y’s Planning and Economic Development Committee proposed a change to the code to clarify a law allowing establishments to sell beers, wines and ciders to sell on-premises.

It’s complicated to gauge the immediate significance of the law: establishments like Bandwagon and Ithaca Beer Company are already in operation and generally fall within the allowed definition of a tavern.

The difference–in the case of the business the code was written to allow, the proposed Liquid State Brewing Co. taproom proposed to set up in the Cornell Laundry building–is that there was never any formal definition for the difference between a brewpub and a brewery, especially in the central business district: Bandwagon, a small scale brewpub producing under 5,000 barrels a year as defined by New York State, went through the building department as a tavern.

Because Liquid State’s yield is larger, up to 40,000 barrels and, because the brand was eventually looking to produce on a regional scale similar to companies like Cortland Beer Company, a specific definition was required. (New York State standards define a microbrewery as up to 60,000 barrels.)

The changes are in their earliest stages, and will be coming back to the committee next month.

What is the Real Vacancy Rate?

A

s the Tompkins Count y Hou si ng Su m m it approaches at the end of the month, the questions of the public are sure to receive at least some clarity on what type of progress might be made in alleviating the crisis. One question surrounding the housing debate, however, has laid with the primary statistic driving new development and calls for newer, better housing: the vacancy rate.

Some think it’s close to zero.

Landlords sitting on empty rooms in their properties will argue it’s significantly higher.

So, the question is this: what is the real rental housing vacancy rate in Tompkins County?

The answer: nobody is really sure definitively.

According to the county’s regular consultant on housing statistics, Ken Danter, there are two vacancy rates he’d conclud-

ed on based on several different databases and the survey of thousands of properties in the Ithaca metropolitan area. For larger properties–defined as having 24 or more units each– the vacancy rate is still astonishingly low given the recent inf lux of development in the city of Ithaca, both for students and professionals: less than 2 percent.

On the other end of the spectrum, it’s actually pretty easy to find a place to live in Ithaca. 800 units in the city exist in buildings comprised of less than 24 units, the vacancy rate of which Danter calculated to approximately six or seven percent: above the healthy market level of 5 percent often pointed to by the city as standard.

“Vacancies are up on the smaller properties,” Danter said in a recent interview. “There’s no question about that.”

The city’s landlord association, meanwhile, has questioned that vacancy rate. Using a direct-contact survey orchestrated by local developer John Guttridge, the overall vacancy rate in the city was approximately 4.46 percent based on a survey of more than 1,400 units. Danter’s survey involved the survey of more than 5,800 units, most of which were in larger buildings.

In Guttridge’s survey, it was found larger structures with 20 or more units had a vacancy rate of 2.68 percent. Among smaller buildings–between one and 19 units–the vacancy rate was significantly higher; closer to 9 percent across the board.

The interesting thing about these statistics are about the highest levels of demand in the market and the type of construction that has risen to meet it: often high-end high rises, which can appeal to both young professionals and graduate stu-

fter more than a half year’s search, Cornell has finally settled on a new face to lead the University and its several campuses worldwide.

In a surprise announcement on Monday a f ternoon, t he university’s Board of Trustees announced Martha Pollack, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Michigan for the past three years, will be Cornell’s 14th president, beginning in April. She succeeds Elizabeth Garrett, who died earlier this year of colon cancer, and relieves interim president Hunter Rawlings III. “I had a very personal and deep connection with (Elizabeth Garrett),” said Jan Rock Zubrow, w ho c h a i re d t he search committee that chose both Pollack and Garrett. “I believed she was doing great things for the university, and I felt compelled to find another great leader to take our institution to greater heights. I found that in Martha Pollack.”

At 58, Pollack is the oldest person to be named president of the university, beating David Skorton by two years, and makes Cornell the third Ivy League University to have had more than one female president, joining the University of Pennsylvania and Brown.

Pollack comes as an ideal pick given the recent goals stated by the university. Her background in computer science, Pollack fulfills the need for an overseer of the university’s tech campus on Roosevelt Island in New York City as it nears completion, and her Housing contin u ed from page 3

dents alike, and student-centric towers on the hill, catered mostly to Cornell’s students.

But even with “purposebuilt” student housing and a large vacancy in smaller properties, student demand is still a problem and the rental stock for young professionals remain low.

So why isn’t student demand alleviating then?

Danter said the ability to charge higher rents on smaller properties spurred the gradual elimination of the type of housing suitable for these young professionals in favor of the much larger student market: in between 2000 and 2010, he said,

Cornell Names New President experience in both managing the $3.4 billion research arm of the University of Michigan and creating campus-wide, interdisciplinary programs between multiple departments help her to fulfill many of the goals of the campus’s master plan, One Cornell; outlined by Rawlings in a recent state of the university address last month.

“She’s demonstrated leadership roles at a large, very complex institution,” Zubrow said.

“She’s demonstrated the ability to bring people together and create great things in a very complex setting. Martha has outstanding managerial skills; people speak eloquently about

the way she’s achieved what she has. I think she has the ability to realize the aspirations of One Cornell; to bring people together.”

Pollack comes to Cornell after a 16-year run on the faculty at Michigan, where when she got her start, there were more “men named Igor” than women in the computer science department, she joked at a press conference Monday. She moved up the ladder quickly, and her accomplishments at Michigan are broad: she has served as both a dean and as provost, and during her time led programs to both increase the number of smaller classes on campus

the city increased the capacity of buildings in Ithaca that ultimately contained between 3 and 10 units by more than 650 units.

In doing so, Danter said city landlords basically replaced one niche in the market with another.

What exacerbates the issue is a massive dormitory shortfall on Cornell’s campus.

In the case of Cornell, the university doesn’t stack up to the usual standards of building purpose-built housing as a sizable proportion of its net enrollment. Looking at places like the University of Florida, Alabama or Georgia, which have a long history of purpose-built housing, 60 to 70 percent of the

university’s net enrollment can be housed by the university. A majority of the Big Ten schools typically run 20 to 25 percent in their housing capacities. But Cornell? A meager 10 percent.

What exists in a lot of markets are three-story, market rate units, Danter said but so far, there are very few options for market rate apartments for young professionals, the people that most profoundly affect the high end of the market. Anything that does exist for that demographic is, a good part of the time, occupied by students.

“There’s hardly a property in the market that isn’t somehow attached to students,” Danter said.

So how do these revelations

As for Cornell, she does have a history: she’s served as a member of the steering committee for the Jacobs TechnionCornell Institute (an arm of Cornell Tech), which delves into specialized research and training in highly advanced information technology research.

Seven years ago, she even gave a speech at the university, 2009’s ambiguous “Computing Outside The Box,” in which she examined the idea of thinking outside the binary realms of computer science to find innovative ways and perspectives for technology to solve real world problems.

Over the next several years, she wants to push for the college’s role as a “private research institution with a public mission,” and said, with Cornell’s orientation in the innovative world of computer science and healthcare, said she believes the university could be “the greatest in the world” and make a tangible difference in establishing the importance of higher education’s place in the planet.

A big part of that will involve her area of expertise: computer science.

“My focus is on how computer science needs to be more interdisciplinary than it is, something we’ve seen over the past eight or nine years that really applies to a strength of Cornell, what someone here’s described as ‘radical collaboration.’”

Very often, those conversions from single family houses to apartments end up being the most affordable properties in the marketplace… poorer people won’t be able to go into new construction and the large portion they could fit in is occupied by students.

A Close Look at the Office of Human Rights

▶ The Multicultural Resource Center whose community read on the book, “The New Jim Crow” has managed to capture the hearts and minds of an extremely diverse proportion of the community.

Hundreds of people have attended the last few meetings and kept an open mind on learning more on a topic that is the source of a lot of contentiousness in today’s troubled time.

T

he Tompk ins Count y Office of Human Rights has been under scrutiny lately after a county legislator proposed during budgetary meetings that it be entirely dismantled. The county department has been short-staffed over the last few years, but the four employees at the 50-yearold office say they are back on track and ready to make a difference for Tompkins County residents in the forthcoming years.

But the Office of Human Rights has been limited in what it is able to do since 2008, when the New York State Division of Human Rights allowed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOR) between the county and state agency to lapse. The MOR had given the county office the authority to investigate complaints, and without it they could only help complainants submit their reports of discrimination to the state division.

“It’s been a decade since they’ve actually been able to investigate anything,” Legislator Michael Sigler (R-Sigler) said when asked why he proposed elimination of the office.

▶ The Fountain Work began on the Commons’ water feature several weeks ago and, hopefully, will be done in time for all of us to be hiding indoors, nowhere near said fountain. This thumbs-down is temporary though: we’re sure it will be incredible.

“That doesn’t seem to me to be a functioning department.”

Sigler said that the proposal to do away with the office was a “starting point” to get a discussion going among legislators. $330,000 a year is a lot to spend on a department that seems to lack a clear mission, he said.

“That’s really hard for me to explain taxpayers — why we’re spending so much on it,” he said. “That’s a problem that I thought needed addressing. I would just like to know where they’re going with it.”

At Cornel l, a progra m has begun using a program that can transport you to sites far from Ithaca that could one day, end up being used in local classrooms.

Called an extraterrestrial virtual field experience, these programs utilize virtual reality to create a different method to approach in-field research.

The program could eventually by connecting it to the next generation scientists by prompting “new-ish ” standards for K-12 science education, which New York would probably adopt officially at the December Board of Regents.

“They’re in the process of upgrading that technology so they can have other relationships with other municipalities in New York State,” Baer said.

“Once that’s resolved we can negotiate an MOU, or once we get something on the table we can discuss what the relationship looks like.”

In the roughly two decades that the MOU was in effect, the OHR had the ability to help the state enforce its own human rights law. If a minority came to the office with a complaint, the staff had the power to do the intake, conduct an investigation, make findings of cause or no reasonable cause, and oversee conciliations, said Baer.

Once the findings were sent to the state, the state engaged in the final stage of that process, which may or may not include a public hearing. All this was done with an office staffed very similarly to the way it is now, according to Baer.

Learning From Trump O

How Tompkins County Can Recover After Shock n November 8, 2016, 25.5 percent of the American electorate chose to vote a serial liar and noted misogynist into the White House.

Ignore the fact his opponent won the popular vote by a margin greater than Al Gore did over George W. Bush in 2000, Richard Nixon did over Hubert Humphrey in 1968 or John F. Kennedy did over Nixon in 1960. By the prescribed rules of our representative republic–the Electoral College–Donald J. Trump is the candidate most representative of our nation’s electorate.

To deny otherwise is ludicrous: blaming the Electoral College is like asking to grade a take home test on a curve.

To maintain the integrity of our system, however wrong that system may be in hindsight, this fact must be respected: the fact that roughly 25.5 percent of American voters found the voice of this man to be the one they want leading the country. Simply put: the empirically proven confidence of the

American people gives this man’s candidacy legitimacy worthy of our respect.

The election’s legitimacy won’t sit well with Tompkins County, where many of the nearly 71 percent of registered voters to go to the polls last week, 67 percent in total, didn’t back Trump.

By definition, Tompkins County is the most liberal county in the state. The municipal representation of our county seat consists solely of Democrats. At the county level, it’s more mixed but at its core, consists of a generally progressively leaning roster. At least one member of the legislature has even been actively promoting petitions to eliminate the Electoral College in the wake of Hillary Clinton’s loss. And, in liberal land, those legislators preside over a county with close to 10,000 Tr u mp suppor ters whose voices leant to one of, if not the biggest upset in political history.

W hen you t hin k of t he shock we a l l felt when a n unhinged reality show star won the presidency of the United States, you have to wonder why we felt that shock. Was it because someone so highly unprincipled was named to the most principled post in the nation? Was it the fact so many grew frustrated with a lack of polished policy proposals, if any? Was it that we couldn’t imagine anybody voting for such a candidate? continued on page 7

Hillary’s BFF

ack in April, after the New York Democratic primar y between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, I wished I was Hillary’s best friend so I could call her, not to congratulate her on her victory, but to ask her to consider dropping out.

The contest in New York revealed weaknesses in her candidacy that seemed to show she could surely lose the election in November.

In 2008, Ms.Clinton handily beat Barack Obama in New York’s primary, taking 57 of 62 counties. The only county she lost outside of New York City was Tompkins.

In 2016, she won by an overall wide margin over Sanders, but Sanders took 46 counties. 41 counties that supported her eight years before no longer did.

It seemed to have little to do with Sanders himself. The counties that f lipped from Clinton were among the state’s rural, conservative ones.

Sanders was by far the more liberal candidate.

Sanders’ name recognition at the start of the campaign was miniscule, especially compared to Clinton’s in New York, where she served as U.S. senator for eight years. His credentials and connections meant little compared to hers, but he prevailed in a vast swath of the state.

Polls already showed that Clinton had an unfavorable image among much of the public. But how much would that actually mean, consid-

ering the institutional support and other advantages she had?

It turned out it meant a lot where it counted: in the voting booth.

As Hillary’s imaginary best friend, I’d have called to say, look: you began this marathon at the 25-mile mark, but this fresh guy starting from step one almost overtook you. Meanwhile, among the Republicans, another outsider is doing the same thing to the more experienced pols there, in state after state. That guy might be able to do completely what this guy almost did. You have to consider that Trump will have a harder time beating Sanders than beating you.

Of course, as Hillary’s friend, I know she is very ambitious. But I know she is also very smart. Now I have to find out if she is also sufficiently pragmatic, not to mention patriotic, to at least consider the possibility of failure for herself and her party, and to commit to avoiding it if the possibility starts to seem real, by stepping aside for Sanders - whose support is building, not waning - before it’s too late.

Nothing of the sort happened, of course, and now we have the results.

Trump won, in a fashion that seemed, as with Sanders in New York, to have little to do with himself, per se. He got fewer votes than Romney in 2012 or McCain in 2008, who both lost to Obama decisively.

The problem is that Clinton got about 7 million fewer votes t han Obama’s average in those elections.

One Academic Argues We Shouldn’t Take A Trump White House So Quietly

n Wednesday evening I attended the beautifully conceived event on the Ithaca Commons where members of the community spoke from their hearts regarding the election of Donald Trump. It was especially compelling that many of the speakers modeled a robust understanding of love: It may or may not start with a hug, but it stretches to the understanding that to love is to reject what divides us from one another: war, racism, assault on gender non-

conformers, and pervasive economic inequality.

Love, is, of course the opposite of what motivates Trump. As at least one speaker on Wednesday evening stated that the overt racism, misogyny, and continual disinformation that characterized the Trump campaign resonate in tone with the election of Hitler in Nazi Germany of 1933. We already know that fascist luminaries all over the world are publicly delighting in his victory. Trump serving as inspiration for a global fascist revolution does not require much imagination. violent harassment of people of color, those assumed to be non-European immigrants, Muslims, and women, all of us will need to assertively stand up to every such incident we observe. The shock of the outcome is felt worldwide. Dismay is intense among Democrats. But where it might be felt most keenly- among progressives, women, communities of color, and youth - perhaps, in the long run, there is reason for hope.

Maybe what this election signals is an end, or at least a big blow, to establishment politics. The winning campaign, and the Democrats’ most surprisingly strong campaign, started from nowhere, had little official party support, no traditional channels of

money, and few institutional or media endorsements. But they had people, and social media where those people could communicate their feelings, concerns, and intentions with each other.

Barriers remain to true populism in the U.S., of course. But it seems a few big ones have fallen. I wonder if Ms. Clinton would have listened, in advance.

So as we face the challenges of building an effective non-violent anti-fascist coalition in Ithaca, allying ourselves with all movements like ours nationally and globally, I believe that what we heard from one another on Wednesday evening can help us understand how to get started. I note two themes that guided our comments, and I believe that they will need to be integrated in our thinking if we are to be successful: The first was the newly increased level of vulnerability and justifiable fear from people of color, those who have been targeted by violent or demeaning speech during the Trump campaign.

The Black Lives Matter movement, first prompted by the increased visibility of deadly police violence against people of color, has attracted the participation and alliance of many of us, an effective voice of the challenge to activists to work at eliminating the entrenched layers of protection “the system” offers to racist violence and its perpetrators. Black Lives Matter, then, provides both an already existing base, and a model for a broader coalition to defend the dignity of all who are “othered” by systems of white, male, and Christian religious supremacy.

At the same time, the call to seriously address climate change, the most unifying violent threat to all of us, is largely ignored by the neoliberal economic order represented by the millionaire and billionaire class who populate the World Economic Forum at Davos. Wall Street has quietly refunded itself while we see little progress towards the creation of the millions of jobs necessary to build the new sustainable green economy.

To build the necessary activist coalition responsive to both themes our community voiced on Wednesday evening, we cannot excuse misogyny, racism, nor other forms of hate and violence. At the same time, we must understand the legitimate desperation of many of Trump’s supporters who were attracted to his contempt for the establishment that has repeatedly failed them. That so many of our fellow citizens colluded with his hateful victim-blaming rhetoric rightfully disgusts us, yet we must move past our grief and anger to respond to the underlying reality: the current system of globalization that values profitmaking is failing all of us. We need to put aside our pain and work with others, some of whom are not immediately loveable to us.

The real questions we should be asking are what we didn’t know and why.

Where we failed in predicting Donald Trump’s rise to prominence was from an unwillingness to listen, of taking the concerns of the people–or as Nixon would call it, ‘the silent majority’–whose frustrations propelled him to the White House. Forget the calls of racism and fascism for a minute, though it should be acknowledged people who practice those awful philosophies now feel enabled, and a vote for Trump now signifies the disenfranchisement of thousands of black and brown people across this country. Voting against someone because of the behaviors their candidate’s message enables clearly isn’t what Trump supporters were looking for: they weren’t, as JFK requested a half century ago, asking what they could do for their country; they were asking what their country could finally do for them after years of inaction by the people at the top. They were looking out for themselves. But the pitfall of that silent majority is they may have formed their philosophies in solitude, and the elite they resented so formed their own far from the inputs of those they’d long neglected.

The very idea of a representative republic is that it works from the bottom up. In Tompkins County, the very bottom rung of our nation’s government, we are meant to represent the essence of our people as a building block to the nation’s political discourse. But, by the fault of both sides, that system hardly seems to be perfectly representative of its constituency. Meetings often go unattended (unless a big building is going up) and outreach, whether from TCAD or the legislature or any other broad-reaching office, seems limited. In the city, some policies by design set the tone for the rest of the county, the very definition of an elite group governing from the top.

We acknowledge we have an imperfect system, but there is one question we can truly explore to help us improve it: who are we ignoring?

Let’s reexamine how we engage the public.

Let’s double our efforts on outreach, focusing more on dialogue, rather than one-sided lectures. Extend public comment periods, send more mailers, promote more meetings, get both the public and politicians out to events they wouldn’t otherwise. Let’s talk to each other, if only to make sure that, when we work to perfect our imperfect union, we’re doing it all together.

The Democrats said it themselves after the election was over: “We have a lot of work to do.” This, above all things, is something both parties want: Progress. The simplest place it should start is in acknowledgement of each side by their opposition: of dialogue across party lines and demographic spheres.

According to a popular book our new vice president swears by, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting, get understanding.”

If we’re as progressive as we believe we are, let’s try to set an example of what it means to govern by wisdom. Hopefully, the rest will follow.

Lane changed the rules of public comment when gay people began discussing issues of public safety and fears. This has gone on for two years and supported in the form of silence, a further abuse by Democrats on the legislature who tolerate the intolerable.

The entrenched Democrat who is vocal, supportive, inviting and makes LGBTQ issues and protections a part of her service public as an Assemblyperson is Barbara Lifton. I was sorry to know she supported HRC who only uses LGBTQ to get votes. Democrats on TC Leg. like Carol Chock, Leslyn- McBean Clairbourne, Will Burbank and Anna Kelles are dems that i see being the most responsive to LGBTQ needs and do consider POC and are leaders of a stronger, more inviting and therefore effective and engaged Democratic party.

Voters should also make it an effort to understand WHO you are hurting and how it effects people outside your own lives please. When you vote for people who are inconsiderate of human rights and ‘that’ isn’t on their platform stop voting for them, they are not Democrats. Dems who voted HRC over Bernie Sanders even when we told you all this would happen need to take responsibly for this. WE need to talk about THAT or this party will face an exodus and continue to implode as Dems who ‘know’ walk away in disgust of the rampant white, straight privilege and class under tones.The eye rolling behaviors of certain dems who are completely out of touch with the rest of us and should none of ‘them’ should run again for TC legislature if we truly want to experience an ‘inclusive’ county.

s election day came in America, news came out that morning that the nation of Rongovia would be closing its embassy to the United States; again.

The reasons weren’t political, nor were they done spontaneously. Simply put, the ownership of the Rongo had finally come to grips with what they’d known for a while: the place could no longer operate as it had in a way that made any financial sense for anybody.

a Facebook post by the bar’s management. “While we wish we could just say, “We’re moving the embassy to Canada,” in response to recent geopolitical events, the truth is that we are facing overwhelming financial complications. We did some things well, we did some things poorly, but we did do the best we could to re-establish the Rongo as a community pillar.”

Relations between Rongovia and the United States were strained for many years until the late Alexander Montgomery Brooks III, a graduate of Cornell’s Hotel School in the ‘60s, returned to the area after catching the management bug in the Caribbean.

He ran several nightclubs during his time abroad, including The Minor Key Room of the St Thomas Club, The Grass Shack in St Thomas, and a nightclub in Managua, Nicaragua. According to his 2013 obituary, the Rongo’s namesake came by way of Alex’s partner in Managua, who described the craziness of running a club in Central America as “Everything is Wrongovia.” And thus, in 1973 the Rongo was born, hosting legendary cocktails, incredible Mexican food and a notorious softball team, the Rongo Ducks.

But it was when the Otts–Mary and the late Eric (the King and Queen of Rongovia, as they were known)–took over the business in ’87 that things really began to click for the bar. As anyone in town can attest, no iteration of the bar has been able to evoke the magic of the early-90s, when the place was packed past the fire code, a community center where the waitstaff would simultaneously find themselves tiptoeing around hundreds of dancers and toddlers alike on their way to the tables.

It was the definition of a community center, an extension of the community fabric beyond the hours of 9-5. All cultivated by the Otts, who decided to buy it on a whim.

“It was definitely the first time we ran that kind of business,” said Eric in a 2009 interview with The Times. “We drove through T-Burg in Mary’s old pickup truck, and we noticed that it was for sale.

The group in charge today is quick to acknowledge the place has its problems; it’s really just a problem of structure than anything, one employee, Elizabeth Williams, calling it a band of “35 wonderful hippies trying to run a business.”

They’d built momentum over the last few months, even with the Rongo’s looming fiscal issues. They hired Kyle Barnhart as manager, luring him away from Hector’s renowned Stonecat Cafe. Their chalkboard by the bar promoting the month’s upcoming music acts had been filling up, Angelo Peters of Big Mean Sound Machine booking their shows. Some nights on the weekend, the front of house would be packed; impressive for its small-town surroundings.

“We’ve been getting bigger bands and we’ve remedied so many of the errors,” Williams said. “But the business model itself has never really made it. So there’s been a lot of discussion around what that could potentially be.”

Several ideas were floated around. Williams proposed a co-op, possibly with a community kitchen and teaching space during the day. She even started a GoFundMe page on her own volition, a homage to the 2014 community-backed financing of the bar that allowed it to stay open for a while. Barnhart opposed the idea, saying he didn’t feel comfortable reaching out to the community for help again, and proposed an idea that almost flew–a Rongovian brewery, something to provide a third stream of revenue he saw as a solution to the bar’s financial woes.

“Somebody counted the other day, and there’s like 14 places to eat in Trumansburg but no tourist destination,” Barnhart said. “On the Seneca Wine Trail you have 40 wineries, restaurants, you have a ton of stuff going on… so I thought a

wine or brewery presence would be great for Trumansburg. I thought it’d be a great player.”

But the bar’s investors balked at his ambition: Citing an advantage of 40 years

of brand recognition and a national notoriety spread through “the Rongovian Diaspora,” as he calls it, Barnhart pitched the idea of going big time with the brand, calling for widespread distribution. They

called for a brewpub.

“If people were to see a Rongo beer on the shelves, I think they would pick it up,” Barnhart said. “The brand is bigger than most locals give it credit for.”

The brand itself is intriguing, as the Rongo doesn’t stand out for anything other than what it is: The Rongo. While its menu has garnered the positive reviews of critics and the community, it’s not the main draw. A bar in a town of many bars, its cocktail menu competes with that of Atlas Bowl down the street and, to some degree, the beer selection of the nearby Silver Line Taproom.

“It’s a bar,” Barnhart said. “People think of the Rongo for its bar and its music, I don’t think food has ever been the main draw. We brought Julie Jordan along and got a great response from the public but, it’s all about the music.

Rusted Root played here, Derek Trucks, David Byrne… the list is incredible. It’s known as a regional music venue.”

In the tumultuous history of Rongovia, documented in a map above the door, there have been many memories made, some imagined, some not.

“That’s what’s cool about working there,” Williams said. “A couple days ago we had three guys come into the bar to take the same picture they had 20 years prior: same bar, same background.”

It’s also known as “Trumansburg’s living room,” and for a reason beyond its couches, its well-worn floors, its board games, public house feel or its warm furnishings. At 5 o’clock on its final night as the dinner crowd piled in, a group of kids rushed to the front and called out for Shirley Temples, their mother smiling from behind the bar as The Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down” played over the speakers. A couple had been there since opening, and finished off the last of the bar’s stock of Damiami Savignon Blanc. Stearns came to the bar as his set was about to begin, ordered a cocktail. Without as much as a followup question, bartender Casey Patridge got to work: Grey Goose, Tonic and lime, with a dash of bitters.

“I don’t really want to leave this place,” she said after, weighing what her next stop might be once the bar closed down. “I want to stay where there’s music being played.”

Hopshire Eyes Expansion

Ripples of Mass Incarceration

T

he party in the Shire has gotten so hoppin’ its owners are expanding to keep it going. Hopshire Farm & Brewery has started a two-phase expansion project that will add 2,500 square feet to its building at 1771 Dryden Rd. in Freeville.

The first phase, a 1,200 square-foot addition on the west end of the structure is already well underway.

“It certainly wasn’t in our original plans,” said Randy Lacey, co-owner of the family-run business with Diane Gerhart.

Music wasn’t in its original plan, either, but it has become a standard at the brewery on Friday nights as well as on special occasions or events. “(The expansion) is really based on response from our customers,” Lacey said.

“People like to gather here.”

The shell for phase 1 is already up and siding was delivered Friday. The addition will be a 100-person community event space that can accommodate larger gatherings than the small tasting room with which Hopshire started.

Lacey said they’re already working on planning for next year.

Hopshire turned three years old in May of this year; the year prior the business began bringing in bands on Friday nights and have kept it going as a weekly event.

It also added food vendors, such as Dryden’s Grubbi Groks BBQ and the Dryden Community Café.

“From then on it was pretty steady (growth),” Lacey said.

Phase 1 of its current project, funded by in part by an Empire State Development Grant, is expected to be completed at the beginning of 2017. Phase 2 -- a 1,300 square-foot addition to the brewing and storage area – will follow.

The second phase will allow the brewery to double its production. Hopshire sells its locally named beers in the tasting room as well as in local establishments and stores.

The second addition will go on the east side on the cement foundation currently used for the bands.

Hopshire is one of only three local businesses in Tompkins County that was selected this year to receive an Empire State Development Grant.

The brewery will receive 20 percent of the project costs at the completion of the project based on certain requirements: 30 percent Minority/Women Owned Business Enterprise participation during construction and the creation of two permanent jobs over the next three years.

ook clubs have an interesting means of bringing people together.

They hold its members accountable by forcing one to engage in the material to contribute to the discussion; the key to their own personal enrichment. And, with the right material, navigating the paragraphs and passages together can lend a context and understanding to the words on the page that would otherwise be unattainable.

So what happens when a book club has an entire city as its membership and the tome they’re all poring over relates to a topic at the very center of the community dialogue, a core issue that affects the entire community and its perceptions of issues such as ending injustice in our community?

The Multicultural Resource Center has managed that. In events over the past several months, the center has brought together hundreds of people to talk about mass incarceration. In the first session, they packed the GIAC gym to the point of standing room only. Overcrowded on Monday night, they moved to the gym of Beverly J Martin elementary school, this round to talk about knowing your rights; based around chapter three of the book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness: The Color of Justice.

A back-and-forth between mayor Svante Myrick and Edwin Santiago, a mentor in the Ultimate Re-Entry Opportunity Mentee Program and former convict, the pair discussed the real implications of power and control in the criminal justice system, touching back and forth on the implications of both the inherent racism of the criminal justice system and its work in creating a new form of slavery: known as the institutional indentured servitude created by the nation’s mass incarceration system.

“This isn’t a new thing,” Santiago said.

The evening’s conversation was racked with personal overtones. Santiago came from a troubled background: incarcerated at 17 for a violent offense, he served the first of four bids in an adult prison, kicking off a non-consecutive 20-plus years in the system before getting out. He spoke of his experiences inside the walls; the dehumanization perpetrated by officers, the discrimination that he had to fight outside and what he saw as most needing of reform: the justice system itself, and eliminating the chain of command from the District Attorney to the police officer that lands people in jail.

Myrick came from the other side, discussing the angle of not just being a leader backing the police but on the side of a family affected by the factors that often lead to incarceration; most notably, drug abuse.

His father, he told the crowd, had struggled with drugs and for a good deal of his adult life had been behind bars, something that led to his fear of drugs and the impact it can have on families.

What he also touched on was the impact of incarceration itself. Before the Ronald Reagan years, Myrick said, drug addiction was in the realm of the clergy and the doctor. After a while, people began calling the police, fuelled by the ignorance of the Reagan years. Ask Myrick what Reagan did about the distinctively-black issues of AIDS or the crack epidemic?

“Not a damn thing,” Myrick said.

But now that opioid addiction, a decidedly white affliction has hit, what is happening? More compassionate approaches to treatment, Myrick said. The factors behind that, as they were when people of color were arrested with great frequency, were societal and as such, changed along with the times.

But to fight the institutional racism that still exists, the idea we need to get ‘them away from us,’ Myrick said, is through action.

“You shouldn’t leave this room just having read the book and thought you’ve done something,” Santiago said.

Local activist Phoebe Brown, looking around the room to see all colors of faces, seemed encouraged that that was going to happen.

“When I came here and saw 450 white people, I thought ‘oh, we missed our mark,’” she said. “But now? I’m glad you’re here, because now we can make a change.”

Although it is a fairly new term, the Critical Zone has relevance to everyone and the interdisciplinary approach has really grown under this research program. Part of the idea is that teachers do not only study the Critical Zone through the virtual fieldwork, but also study it outside of the classroom, by taking their students out to interpret the local Critical Zone while inducing a big part of the philosophy: EVFs should not replace actual fieldwork, but should serve as a catalyst to get kids outside, in addition to studying these places around the country (which they would be doing via the virtual fieldwork).

Extraterrestrial fieldwork (EVFE) is an important part of virtual fieldwork. PRI has done some work with the people at SPIF, which is a NASA funding program at Cornell, to come up with a Mars EVFE. They chose Mars because it is considered the “mother of all virtual fieldwork.”

One Fine Weekend

Closure, the end of an era, and more mark the best of the end of the fall sporting season.

f I were ever to tally up the amount of time I have spent standing in lines, it would likely add up to reveal that several days of my life have been thus spent.

When my friend Richie I made our way to Cortland on Saturday, we expected that we’d face a few lines, and we were right. We sat in a line of traffic to get into the stadium complex. We waited in line to get our press passes. We waited in line to enter the stadium with 10,000 other people. Finally, we waited to catch the elevator up to the press box. All of these pre-game exercises in line standing were annoying, but necessary.

Lines, as any seasoned professional will tell you, are a Cortaca Jug tradition.

After the game, we went outside and made our way down to the field, where the bright sun took some of the chill off the brisk November afternoon. We saw that we would once again stand in a line, but this time we did not care at all. We would patiently wait our turn to

We stepped up next, and Richie hugged Mike and told him he knew how it felt to stand on a field for the last time, and that Mike had done Ithaca College proud as a player, an assistant coach and head coach.

I wished Mike’s wife well, congratulated her on their shared achievements, and then it was my turn to shake hands with Welch. I said, “Mike, thanks for everything, you have been such a class act, and I hope your retirement lasts as long as your coaching career.”

Mike laughed and said, “I hope so too!”

His wife, Susan, said, “Oh my! We’ll be a hundred years old!”

I hope to be there to remind them that I was the first to suggest they might see that day.

Bowl by beating Columbia for the fourth straight time. The win was the Big Red’s fourth of the season, and it proved that the pre-season pundits that picked C.U. to finish last in the league were misguided.

Dave Archer’s team roared out of the gate this season, winning their first three games and serving notice that they were a program on the rise. While this sounds cliché, they were a bounce or two from winning another pair of games. They will host Penn on Saturday, and I’d love to see a big crowd, as Archer and his staff are putting a fine product on the field.

The fact that the Lansing High boys’ soccer team attained a #3 state ranking and made it to the state semifinals speaks volumes about a very tough group of kids from a very loyal and supportive town.

In August, as the team was preparing for the season, head coach and Athletic Director Adam heck died unexpectedly at the age of 42. Adam had mentored these kids since they were very young, and he was also–like many coaches–a father figure of sorts to many of them.

After Heck’s passing, it was announced that Benji Parkes would take over the program, and I recall thinking that Parkes was likely somewhat of a big brother to some of the players (and he is, in fact, the big brother of Nick Parkes). The Bobcats

pulled it together and pulled off tough, one-goal wins against Trumansburg and Bishop Ludden to get to the state’s Final Four, and the 2-1 loss in the semis wasn’t settled until the final minute.

It seems like 2 years ago that I was writing about Parkes as a Bobcat player, and like yesterday that I was interview-

ing him as an Ithaca College Bomber. To step up and lead this team through such a period of grief and uncertainty was a noteworthy achievement, and those players are fortunate to live in such an amazing community. Congratulations on a great season.

It might be slow going, but regaining an MOU would mark significant progress for an office that last year was marred by internal strife involving the Tompkins County Human Rights Commission, an advisory board to the county legislature.

One-third of the Commission members resigned in the summer of 2015, including David McNamara. “I didn’t agree that were addressing any tangible outcomes that I could see,” he said.

Whether or not the MOU is restored, another option would be to enact a local law that would give the office the authority to conduct its own investigations.

Baer said she advocated for and passed a similar law at the Geneva Human Rights Commission in Geneva, NY, where she said she was able to bring in $130,000 to $150,000 annually for the City of Geneva for capacity building from the Housing and Urban Development Council. The local law was extensive, she said, because it had to be deemed equivalent to the Fair Housing Act. “It was the only city in the state of New York that enjoyed that kind of status,” she said, “which meant that our local office could enforce the Fair Housing Act on behalf of HUD.” She drafted a similar law for Tompkins County but said she had difficulty getting it off of the ground, in part because at 35 pages it was deemed too long and because of concerns about the costs associated with holding local hearings, a factor she isn’t worried about, saying that the vast majority of cases were conciliated and never went to a hearing.

For leg islators li ke Michael La ne (D-Dryden), Tompkins County Legislature Chair, the local law seems like a big undertaking when there is the possibility of simply restoring the MOU. “We’re trying to get us back to where we were before because we thought it was a system that worked pretty well,” he said. “This law would require real change in the way everything is done.”

“It hasn’t come through and been thoroughly looked at by county,” Lane said of the proposed local law, “but we’re a little reluctant because of the potential cost and administrative difficulties.”

The law has yet to be fully presented to any committee of the Tompkins County Legislature, said James Dennis (D-Ulysses), who had questions about the logistics.

“Who is the judge and the jury in these cases?” he asked. “You’re basically setting a court system up here locally.”

So what does the Tompkins County Office of Human Rights (OHR) do to improve people’s lives on a daily basis?

Among standing up for people whose rights are violated, it also conducts human rights outreach and education, helps Tompkins County apply for federal and state housing dollars from the NY State Department of Homes and Community Renewal, and lends administrative assistance and expertise to County efforts in implementing its Workforce Diversity and Inclusion policy the website states.

In 2015, 49 percent of the 81 cases the

office saw were employment complaints, and 25 percent were housing-related.

Currently, if someone has a human rights issue they can call or was into the office, and Xavier Rusk, paralegal aide for the OHR, will handle the intake and conduct a consultation. He will write a report and help the complainant get in touch with the state division.

Rusk said he appreciates the hyperlocal aspect of his work. People are often able to walk or take public transportation to the office, located on East State Street, if need be, and they often feel more comfortable speaking with someone from the area.

“It gives it a more natural feeling when relating a story that can be a traumatic for some people,” he said, “and it give us an opportunity to ask ourselves “what is this that’s going on? Would this be considered discrimination? We can analyze that information and include it in our workshops and trainings.”

Newly hired Rebecca Sims, program and outreach specialist, is filling a role that was left vacant for a year due to a county hiring freeze. Currently she’s getting ready for a flood of entries for the 29th Annual Universal Declaration of Human Rights art competition, due November 18. The fourth staff member, Receptionist Carmen Arroyo, has been with the office since 2003 and is instrumental to the daily operations of the OHR, her fellow employees said.

Including in the proposed budget is $4,500 to conduct 15 tests when a landlord is suspected of housing discrimination.

A person of color, for example, would approach a landlord to see if they will be rented to, and later a white test subject will do the same. The results would be sent to the state division, the Fair Housing Council, or Housing and Urban Development.

Though the office is still subject to criticism by some, it was heartily advocated for by many members of the public who showed up at a recent legislature meeting to respond to Sigler’s proposal. “They work hard in spite of not having enforcement powers,” said Human Rights Commission Chair Jamila Simon. “We need to expand the office, not dismantle it,” added Marcia Baum, retired director of the Greater Ithaca Activities Center.

With $15,000 in recommended use of rollover funds for enforcement and outreach staff training remaining in the proposed 2017 budget (expected to be adopted at the Tompkins County Legislature November 14), Baer said she’s hoping the fully-staffed office can get back on track.

Oddly enough, she said, the numberone complaint her office has been receiving lately is that businesses are discriminating against service animals used to assist those with a physical or emotional disabilities.

“I personally believe that local investigations benefit local people, and the best part about working with the state division is it’s nice to partner with another agency that believes in the work you’re doing,” Baer said. “That relationship I really appreciate, knowing that we’re just working together for the people who live in Tompkins County.”

hickening layers of compact death metal vibrancy stretch out in elliptical fashion with Boston’s extreme metal outfit Carnivora. Their soaring and intertwining melodic nature pushes the band towards a unique and totaling vision: they combine the speed and energy of classic New England hardcore with an airy sort of new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM) technical innuendo, claiming a mix that crushes and soars honestly. Their music is an underground and aboveground type fusion, the band letting each expressionistic form they sculpt manifest evenly.

Carnivora has a contemporary fire, but they fly distinctly with an old-school reverence.

“There’s something about the combination of intense and glorious that never gets old for me,” said Carnivora guitarist Cody Michaud.

“This sound, pioneered by Black Sabbath and developed by Iron Maiden and Judas Priest is what I look for in metal. Something about pushing the limits and capturing that degree of chaos while maintaining a melody that really speaks— that is the complement which creates the larger than life aspect I love about metal.”

Massachusetts is in many ways the metal and hardcore capital of the universe. Its density, transcendentalist history and abundance of blue-collar cities seem to produce a dynamic range of bands that embody this unique mix of individuality and hardened realism. Carnivora has a wicked personality.

“Having toured around the country, I can say that New England is unique in how geographically dense everything is, Michaud said. “Within a radius of a few hours driving, there are tons of cities to play and tons of metal fans. This is not the case for many other places around the country. It’s also pretty packed with cool history and culture, which I believe has a bearing on the metal and hardcore that comes from here.”

Carnivora is in many ways a band carrying on a tradition, but they expand feverishly with a charm and punishing relentlessness all their own. The band formed in haste, and play with a freeness and openness that reflects this creation: a sort of natural whirlwind.

“We actually started because of our vocalist [M. Scott Lentine] jokingly signed a nonexistent band up for a big battle of the bands at The Palladium in Worcester, where they do New England Metal and Hardcore Fest,” Michaud said. “He never really expected to get the call back, but he did [laughs]. He pretty much just called Dan DeLucia [drums] and I to see if we were down to write some tunes and do the show.

“We then recruited Cam Hunt [bass] and Mike Meehan [guitars], who had been jamming a bit with Dan and were both from our hometown. In the four months from the time we formed to when we played the battle, things came together pretty naturally and we had a whole bunch of ‘holy s***’ moments. Something about the pressure of the time constraint made those first few months super exciting.”

tied together by its constant aggression and technicality. It showcases a brilliant width of variance, notable for its diligent corners and tight angles that are juxtaposed to the center of the album’s identity. It’s all over the place, in a good way. The band’s latest recording, The Vision, an EP from 2015, is an even better, more structured, coherent, and brutal work than its predecessor. It dazzles and optimizes each swirling frequency that band has at its disposal.

Carnivora is a band in progressive flux; shaping more dimension with each step of their journey.

songs we had written since day one, and attempting to slam them together in the form of a cohesive album. Though I’m not sure the cohesiveness was there, the album was undeniably honest. On Eternal, we consciously made an effort to go the other way and try to lock into a definite sound. We put a lot more emphasis on the songwriting and structures. Now, we’re kind of taking the best from each of those releases and it’s coming together as our strongest material yet. It’s everything we’ve ever done well, musically.”

Live, Carnivora is a whirling behemoth. An onslaught of power, precision, and fantasy, they offer up a brilliant heavy metal fantasy with an artful and crystallized countenance. Michaud and Meehan are axe masters who shred in a sort of classic “Gothenburg melo-death” style (think At The Gates, Dark Tranquility, In Flames); Lentine is an inspired hardcore and death metal front man; Hunt is a progressive and sculpted bass player who completes each song’s structure with an architect’s resolve; and DeLucia is a drummer that is as technical as he is interstellar, orbiting around the complete whole of the band, offering depth and nuance. The band pushes, pulls and rages, and in a lush whirlwind manage to forge a special séance with every performance: each show stronger than the one before.

“For me, the live experience is what it’s all about,” Michaud says. “Writing and

recording is extremely rewarding in certain ways, and clearly a crucial element, but the exchange of energy that happens while playing live is what keeps the fire burning. No matter how many shows we play, big or small, I always get the adrenaline rush and the sense of excitement I had for our first performance ever.

What you see on stage is a reflection of the genuine excitement and fun that we are having, and the goal is to inspire the crowd to send some of that energy back to us.”

The band’s currently in the studio working on their third recording, and for this one they decided to manifest the spirit of their inner tendency: write in a

natural and pure way, harnessing the intimacy and sacredness that initially forged their being. When you see these guys play you’re immediately taken by their energy and aggression, and once you’re pulled in the band takes you out to the Milky Way, ping ponging you through the cosmos, through visions dark and real. Carnivora is the real deal, and they’re just getting started.

“With the new record we’re working on, we took a step back and got back to what it means to be a band,” Michaud relayed. “We ditched the modern approach of writing individually in front of a computer and went back to the jam space. Almost every song we’ve written

for the next record has been a collaboration between all members of the band, and has really given us each the chance to play to our strengths. We started off just going into the space with a riff or two, and jamming for hours. Everybody was contributing riffs, ideas, and structures, and this eventually led to having a huge collection of new material that all came together very organically. We’re now working out lyrical ideas and playing around with new vocal ideas, kind of expanding into areas we haven’t been able to explore until now.” •

’m a Back to the Future fan, so time travel tales are just about my favorite kind of speculative fiction. So it’s nice to be able to report that J.J. Abrams and show developer Bridget Carpenter have done a terrific job adapting Stephen King’s “Saving JFK” epic 11-22-63 into a gripping and addictive eight-part miniseries.

Unlike the recent CBS series Under the Dome, 11-22-63 is much more faithful to the spirit and intent of the King novel. Certain changes have been made, but nothing that ruins the spine of the story. When I read the novel, I didn’t have an actor in my head to play the part of

pet peeves with most movies is lazy music selection, but Abrams and company have found some really neat, less-well known pop tunes to anchor the series, and the fact that these tunes haven’t propped up a thousand other movies is a testament to the freshness and fun in this superior King adaptation.

While we wait for season two of Stranger Things on Netflix, check out Hidden, an earlier film made by the Duffer brothers that proves that the success of their recent streaming series was no fluke.

Not to be confused with Jack Sholder’s excellent 1987 sci-fi action thriller The Hidden, Hidden is a tense, claustrophobic family melodrama about a family of three living in a bomb shelter after a catastrophic and ill-defined plague has overrun the country, and maybe the world.

The father, mother and daughter are played by Alexander Skarsgard, Andrea Riseborough and Emily Alyn Lind, respectively, and the film generates endless tension just observing them trying to survive day after day, trying to come up with solutions to the kinds of accidents and calamities that threaten their survival.

Skarsgard, who played the title role in The Legend of Tarzan this summer, has a dignity and black humor reminiscent of some of the fatherly roles Viggo Mortensen has taken on in the wake of the LOTR trilogy. Courage in the face of Danger Ken Miller examines the lives of people in war

ne thing to know about battles in places we might never visit, be it skirmishes between opposing gangs, religious factions — anywhere authority gets drunk on its own power and bullies govern: conflicts we can’t see have a profound impact on people that are otherwise foreign to us, an impact that can sometimes become the source of great strength.

In his new book “War Torn: Stories of Courage, Love and Resilience,” (Larson Publications, 294 pages, $17.95) psychologist Ken Miller, senior psychosocial advisor for War Child Holland and son of Ithaca writer and change-maker Nina Miller, takes a close, personal look at the every day heroes caught up in tragedies not of their own making.

In short vignettes capturing the essence of encounters with refugees from war zones in Guatemala, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq and Sri Lanka, Miller makes the reader acquainted with the variety of ways war affects those who survive it. There is the haunting story of Eldin, a young Bosnian boy who ventured outdoors to play with

his friend Hasan. Hasan was then brutally killed by a sniper. A few months later, while shopping with an older sister, the marketplace was bombed, and Eldin saw many people die before being trampled during the resulting stampede. Eldin came to see Miller, he writes, because he wanted the horrifying memories to go away. They won’t.

But there are many who eventually found ways of coping. Samanthi, a young Sri Lankan woman, is able to live joyfully despite having experienced many serious wartime traumas inflicted by the Tamil Tigers. She achieved a measure of peace in part by preparing meals for a group of monks each year and maintaining her love of dance.

Unfortunately, there seem to be more devastated wartime survivors like Eldin than Samanthi.

“It’s true that there’s a lot of pain in the world,” Miller said. “But the truth is, I’ve met the most remarkable, inspiring people in my travels, in the work I’ve done. I’ve seen courage like I’d never imagined by people who’ve stayed in frightening places

to do work they are passionate about, instead of leaving when they could have gotten out. Being around people like that, who do what they do not out of ego but from a place of love and commitment, inspires me and takes away some of the heaviness of the work.”

Miller has worked with several sorts of therapies.

From “Playing to Grow,” to help refugee children process some of their experiences and grow past them, to an eye-movement technique that helps some traumatized individuals deal with their most agonizing memories. He’s worked– and lived–in refugee camps, eating questionable food, sleeping on the ground, surviving the same primitive third-world conditions as his patients. Most of all, he’s listened.

The reader gets the feeling Miller sees those around him not as patients but as colleagues in shared humanity, people who often blur the distinctions between helper and recipient as they share their insights into the experiences that shaped their lives.

“One of the most helpful things we can do when someone has a difficult story to share is simply to listen, open to what they have to say, without immediately giving advice or trying to lessen their distress,” Miller said. “It’s a gift to have one’s experience listened to, believed, and acknowledged.

Often, that’s enough to give some relief and lessen someone’s sense of isolation, of being alone with their painful story.”

At the same time, experience of wartrauma doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Several of his stories relate other stress factors more familiar to a first-world audience: domestic violence, lack of education or illiteracy, poverty, extreme weather, loneliness, illness. Piled onto the horrors of war, tragedy on tragedy, it’s more than many can take in.

Yet there is always hope.

Miller ends with a meaty chapter titled “What you can do,” covering a spectrum of ways individuals can help, from countering xenophobic attitudes to working with non-governmental organizations. As he writes in the book’s introduction, “Tell enough war stories and you’ll discover, if you’ve stayed close to the truth, that you’ve actually told a few love stories along the way.

Miller will be reading from his book and signing it at Buffalo Street Books on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 3 p.m. It would be good to think there will be peace in the world and all the bullies will have changed their minds by then. A Woman in the Underworld Cornell University’s production of Eurydice

A

fter an election week that left so many stunned with grief, it’s curiously timely that Cornell University Schwartz Center’s latest production, Eurydice, focuses on the pain of loss and human resistance to going numb. Sarah Ruhl’s 2003 play is a fresh take–from the woman’s perspective–on the classical tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, both modern and hallucinatory in its setting.

And what a setting: The walls of the Flex Theatre are draped in stained grey canvas, as if dripping with dampness; the excess debris below is littered with hand-written letters (unread, sent to the deceased). Water pipes with huge shut-off valves rise to the ceiling. At center stage, a curtain opens revealing an elevator– the entrance into this Underworld. Kent Goetz’s murky set, effectively lit by E. D. Intemann and enhanced by Warren Cross’s sounds (sea birds, rainfall), ushers us into a desperately bleak afterlife.

David Feldshuh directs with the creative quirkiness that a Sarah Ruhl play demands. A prolific younger playwright,

Ruhl finds unique subjects in her plays, works like The Clean House, In the Next Room or The Vibrator Play, and Stage Kiss, to explore human intimacy. Her Eurydice has a special Cornell connection: the talented Maria Dizzia ’98, who studied under Feldshuh, played the lead role in the play’s Yale and New York runs.

Here Eurydice is a lovely Priscilla Olympia, who flirts girlishly at the beach, teasing Michael Southworth’s far more serious Orpheus. He’s a musician, of course, while she’s always reading; in art and more: They don’t quite speak the same language (and Olympia’s slight accent underscores their differences).

But perfect symmetry isn’t a recipe for romance, and they end up marrying.

At the wedding party, however, Eurydice is lured away momentarily by a shady stranger (“A Nasty Interesting Man” played with sufficient menace by Trey Kirkpatrick). He tempts her with the promise of having a letter from her deceased father.

The attempted seduction at his nearby penthouse is dizzying and disturbing;

Eurydice resists his advances but disappears (falls?) toward her death. Orpheus, meanwhile, leaves their party to search for her and as we know, his grief-stricken pursuit will eventually lead him into the gloomy Underworld.

Eurydice has arrived there, suitcase in hand, and mistakes her father for a bellhop. Her father, who’s tenaciously avoided the mind-erasure of the river Lethe, has been in fact writing her letters all along. Jorge Guevara plays him with attentive devotion; in the nothingness of this place he frames a private “room” for her with string. Their deep connection is re-established as he reads to her from Lear, recalls family memories and schools her in remembering.

Meanwhile, forgetting all about earthly emotions, is the constant command from the Chorus of Stones (Sabrina Lu, Hummd Ali Khan, Carina Scalice): three women dressed in vulgar elegance (by costumer Sarah Eckert Bernstein). They prefer to spend their endless time in quiet repose on lounge chairs – and Eurydice’s vibrant, outspoken nonconformity irritates them no end.

Three women dancers, as Shards of the Stones, flit through this distressing netherworld as well (choreography by Serena Lotreck). But the temporary secret solace of father and daughter reunited is disturbed by the noisy arrival of the arrogant Lord of the Underworld – a tiny figure on tricycle.

Feldshuh has doubled Ruhl’s original effect by having two Lords wheel in, 8th grader A. J. Tatusko on one bike and the sleazy man (Kirkpatrick) on another.

Tatusko gets the lines, however, and he’s splendidly comic – whether bragging, demanding, lusting, or rocking out to death metal (a virtual Trump Mini-Me).

Eurydice just can’t take this child seriously, but when he returns – “grown up” now, thanks to a tall ladder – to claim her as his bride, she makes a fateful decision.

And when Orpheus, who has already lost Eurydice twice, arrives for good, Lethe has robbed him of the ability to read her farewell letter.

This striking production of Ruhl’s haunting play cuts to the quick: When father and daughter intimately converse, when Orpheus mourns his lost bride, you may feel tears rise – and if you don’t, the Stones may have triumphed. • Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice, directed by David Feldshuh. Stepping up to the Podium New CCO music director set for debut

F

inally local classical music lovers can welcome Cornelia Laemmli Orth in her first appearance as our premier orchestra’s new—and first woman—conductor this Saturday, November 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Ford Hall.

On the program are string works by Elgar and Stucky, followed by Beethoven’s violin concerto with concertmaster Christina Bouey as soloist. The customary preconcert talk starts at 6:45.

We’ve been waiting a while to see Cornelia again. Because the programs marking the CCO’s 40th anniversary season were finalized long before her appointment, she could not be here for the first concert due to a scheduling

conflict. For her, and for us, “it seems like forever”—almost the first thing she said when we spoke last week, just hours after her return from a concert tour in her native Switzerland.

The Symphony of the Mountains, her orchestra based in Kingsport, Tennessee, played in festivals and concerts with great success along with the Kruger Brothers, a world-class Swiss bluegrass trio. She says performing music with two very different styles woven together is like nothing else.

She is getting immersed in the community after 11 years in Tennessee with a full schedule of activities, including a conversation with residents at Kendal, luncheons with the orchestra’s board and

loyal donors, two school visits and a family-friendly event at the library.

Already, she has meetings to plan next year’s programs; not to mention rehearsals with the orchestra and soloist.

Educated in Switzerland, Cornelia came to the States in 2000, attracted by the great appeal of Northwestern University’s MA in conducting program. She had planned to return home following her degree, but was offered a position with the orchestra in Knoxville, Tennessee.

She is very excited to be starting work with this orchestra she said, going as far to deem them “really good.” She is equally excited about the program, which opens with Edward Elgar’s Serenade for Strings in E minor, Op. 20. Written early, when this English composer was neither famous nor at all successful, it is “one of the most beautiful string pieces I know,” Cornelia said. In her view it is “very lyrical and touching,” with rich, special harmonies that illustrate the composer’s personal melodic language.

Pulitzer prize-winning and Cornell faculty composer, the late Steven Stucky, is a “beautiful surprise for me,” Cornelia said, “and I am thankful that the committee chose it.”

The piece, commissioned by the Colburn School–a performing arts school across the street from Disney Hall in LA– consists of an introduction with a theme derived from the letters in the school’s name, plus six variations performed without pause. Some are fast and exciting, Cornelia explains, while in others the music “lets the sound hum, you are in no-time land.” This piece of many different sounds, she feels, brings out the color of the string orchestra, and the theme, though not traditional, is a “melody you want to sing, but it will take you longer to learn.”

The conductor said she is “super excited” about the Beethoven concerto (in D major, Op. 61) and its soloist. Although Cornelia has done many concertos, she has never conducted this particularly hard one.

“But I like learning new things,” she adds, and as for Tina Bouey, there is “music coming out of every pore of this woman.” The CCO concertmaster, now in her second season with the orchestra, told me that Beethoven is her “absolutely favorite composer . . . his music really speaks to me.” She started learning the concerto about six years ago during graduate work at the Manhattan School of Music, and first performed it with orchestra last fall in the grand Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt, Austria. Quite a début!

As for what Cornelia said she was most looking forward this week?

“The music making and the people,” she said. “I really fell in love with the orchestra in March, and everyone here has been so kind to me.” •

A Timeless Energy

Tenzin Chopak and friends release a new album

I

n a world full of noise, there’s a certain bravery in approaching creation with a simple acoustic guitar. Tenzin Chopak, a local musician that’s performed under the label Rockwood Ferry since 2012, uses such a muse to light up the universe he exists in, often veering into progressive zones layered, haunting, soft and deep.

Studios here in Ithaca–churns a vision from some genuine portal, a stark bend from his past. The album is Chopak’s here and now–it’s his DNA, his open landscape, his tribute–and it plays out in a sort of chamber folk, old-time, that is as gothic as it is reserved. The band has a record release show at Casita Del Polaris this Thursday, and I caught up recently with the musician to talk about it.

Ithaca Times: You started writing Awful Good after the death of your friend Eric Ott—was it in instant sort of pouring of emotion, a struggle, or a painful sort of process to write this album? Is the whole album sort of a tribute to him in a way?

Tenzin Chopak: We all have people in

our lives that we come to regard as extraordinary human beings full of warmth and joy: Eric was this way for me. Many of the songs, such as “Empty River” and “Tell Queeny,” are related directly or indirectly to him. Other songs such as “No Heart No Pain,” “Lost Time,” and “Knock at the Door” come from a witnessing and empathizing with some of the suffering in our society that I wrote during that time.

The title track, “Awful Good,” is what Eric used to call our old dog, which is still with us. That song is of course about a fifteenyear-old dog, and also about our own lives and deaths. Songs like “Drive” and “Only a Ghost” reflect other personal experiences of mine, such as being a recovering bad driver,

appreciating, mourning, and celebrating beautiful moments in life as they come and go, and accepting their passing.

IT: Working with a producer like Brian Dozoretz, did your initial blueprints and demos change dramatically when you brought them to the studio?

TC: Working with Brian Dozoretz was very organic and smooth; I know we all had a great experience with him. Originally I had thought to do an album where it was myself and Nicholas Walker performing the songs, but we very soon decided to bring our dear friends Greg Evans on drums and Rosie Newton on violin and vocals, and of course that turned out to be wonderful. Our goal was to basically record a live in-studio performance through beautiful vintage gear, and that’s what we did. I know we all feel that Brian facilitated that process in a masterful way that allowed the sessions to flow naturally.

TC: I write songs and then show them to Nicholas, and then we just play them.

Nicholas will take time to feel out various ways he will interpret the song on his instrument, the double bass. The space between us feels intuitive, direct, and heartfelt. The expressions of the songs I bring in feel like they are arrived at naturally through simply playing.

IT: You’re hitting the road for a tour and can only bring five cassette tapes with you (no mixtapes). What are you bringing and why?

TC: Chris Whitley: Dirt Floor; Joni Mitchell: Blue; Sweet Honey in the Rock: Live at Carnegie Hall; Mos Def: Black on Both Sides; Fatoumata Diawara: Fatou.

These are utterly exquisite albums, I always find something new to love about them, and so I wouldn’t mind listening to them exclusively non-stop on a long road trip. In fact, I could listen to just one of them for an entire trip. They each contain sweet affection, sorrowful grief, life-affirming determination, vulnerable heartache, and fierce bravery. I need all of those things in my life, and I’m amazed and inspired when humans lead others to empathy. •

IT: There’s a haunting sort of Americana to many of your songs: where’s this vision come from? Are you eternally thinking of the past while creating your music, or do you just prefer the style (form) that you perform in?

TC: I don’t know if I can point precisely to where the music I make comes from. I grew up in Tennessee, maybe that’s related.

I’m definitely not an old-time player, or even an Americana guy really, although that is one ancestor that is reflected sometimes in the features of the songs I write. I just enjoy music and art, then life happens, then I make my own music and it is naturally descended from all of those streams of experience. I’m not thinking of the past or the future either really, because I’m not really thinking. Music just happens, and that’s how I experience other people’s music; it’s all gut level. To me —whether it is old-time, or Afrobeat, or hip-hop, or experimental electronica, or whatever—there is always something timeless, because music itself seems like a byproduct of the timeless human experience of joy and sorrow.

IT: How do you and Nicholas Walker work together? What’s the space like with you guys, and how do ideas coalesce?

I

first saw Todd Meredith when he played Buddy Holly – and note-perfect version s of all of Holly’s guitar parts – at CRT in 2013 as the star of BUDDY: The Buddy Holly Story, one of those jukebox musicals. I’m a huge fan of Gary Busey in the 1978 film The Buddy Holly Story, but it was so rife with inaccuracies that the Crickets wrote a book called “The Real Buddy Holly Story”.

Todd Meredith is all about getting it right. A lot of Buddy Holly fans might not know that Buddy Holly played a lot of his guitar parts in open E position and used a capo to play in different keys. If you want to play “That’ll Be the Day” like Buddy, you need that capo, and Meredith knows all about it – all the chords, all the licks, all the solos and all the fills. And when he straps on his sunburst Fender Stratocaster – not the white Telecaster that Busey played in the film – Meredith is a ball of fire.

Meredith has played Holly in 19 productions since 2007, usually also acting as musical director and/or co-director.

Meredith and company first played a few shows at a Cortland church, and in May of 2015, he and the Rave Ups returned to

the local landscape by Domenica Brockman.

Cortland to give the first official performance at CRT’s downtown space. In 2016, Meredith came back for two concerts called “The Night the Music Lived”, a flip on “The Day the Music Died”, coined by Don McLean in his song “American Pie”.

Meredith and The Rave Ups recreated the last show of Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper (Jiles Perry “J. P.” Richardson, Jr.) and Buddy Holly.

Meredith and his group are back at CRT for another show at CRT Downtown onNovember 16, and the theme this time is “Unplugged”: an acoustic show. It seems like every time Meredith comes back to CRT, he gets to show off a new musical skill set.

“That’s the goal, man,” says Meredith a few weeks before the show. “We’re trying to do a little something different each time, to keep people interested and keep people comin’ back to see us. [CRT Artistic Director] Kerby Thompson was like, ‘We’ve never tried to do anything during the Thanksgiving break,’ and I said, ‘Why don’t we come up and do an acoustic show, just as a test to see how it goes.’

“It’s actually not out of the realm for me, because ever since I moved down to New Jersey, I’ve been playing in bars and restaurants: acoustic covers and some of my own songs. That’s kind of how I’ve been making my living when I don’t have another gig. So it’ll be cool bringing what I do down here over to Cortland.” Meredith has also been expanding his stage repertoire playing acoustic in productions of the Johnny Cash musical Ring of Fire, another popular jukebox show.

Meredith will be joined onstage by his very talented lead guitarist Jeremy Renner. “We’ll definitely do some Buddy Holly, for sure. But it’s going to be a show
