BOCES Funding Stuck In Purgatory

E

arlier this week, Ithaca City S c ho ol s vote d to pa s s a $124.7 million budget funding its eight elementary schools, two middle schools and its high school, an investment in the education of more than 5,000 students in grades K-12.

What that number does not include is its share of $8 million in essential upgrades to TST BOCES outlined in its recently proposed capital project to replace its nearly 50 year electric and gas lines, a pocked pavement parking lot and an outdated HVAC unit essential to the climate-controlled environment some of the school’s medically vulnerable students require.

The reason, according to BOCES superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Matteson, is politics.

BOCES – a cooperative institution – is funded almost completely by funds through its member districts. Its own capital budget, which comes from the local districts, is its own to spend, allowing the district the f lexibility to make whatever decisions need making.

However, if a district has to borrow money or take on a bond in order to pay for their share of a proposed project, only a unanimous vote of the BOCES board can clear that project for funding. This year, Ithaca City Schools – which is responsible for the largest share of that cost – held off on their vote, the only district of the nine to do so, because the district would have to take on a bond to pay year by year.

Why? Because unlike improvements to t heir ow n faci lit ies, according to state law, funding for BOCES-related capital projects would not be exempt from a district’s tax cap calculations, even though their funding would go to facilities for their own students: basically, for the district to contribute its fair share, ICSD would either have to cut spending or take on a bond to pay for the project over the course of several years, all in order to stay within the tax cap. continued on page 4

Silent Sagas In Wharton’s Footprint

S

ilents Roar! is the f irst short silent film competition of its kind for Tompkins County youth ages 14 – 18. Wharton Studio Museum (WSM) will present a 2:00p.m. public screening and awards ceremony on May 20 at Cinemapolis. According to WSM’s Executive Director Diana Riesman, “...Both Fiona [Okumu] (as Creator and Coordinator of the fest) and Aurora [Ricardo] (as Managing Director) have taken the reins to plan, organize and manage all aspects of Roar… I very much wanted this to be “their” project and it is.”

Okumu, a senior at Ithaca High School, has taken many digital media/documentary classes over the years and plans to study film at college this fall. Ricardo, WSM’s intern, studied film at Hamilton College. Seven genres

will be considered for submission: Action/Adventure, Comedy, Crime/Mystery, Drama, Romance, Science Fiction, and Western. Each submission must have a PG-13 rating and include: a soundtrack, no spoken dialogue, 3 title cards minimum and be a maximum of 3 minutes. The following is a “question and answer” email exchange between Ithaca Times and Fiona Okumu, who broached the idea of a youth festival with WSM at the suggestion of Ithaca’s Mayor Myrick: Ithaca Times: As festival creator and coordinator you’ve stated, “Silents Roar! was created to encourage young filmmakers—and those with no prior filmmaking experience— to explore the rich film history that took place in Ithaca and the region.” Is there an expectation that each film submission will highlight the Ithaca area’s natural or cultural landscapes and/ or its silent film history?

of techniques they use. This is due to the fact that while I do want them to acknowledge the history that took place in our area, I also wanted to see how they would modernize the techniques used by the Wharton brothers in order to strengthen their narrative. In short, my goal was to have the contestants bring the past into the future however they saw fit.

IT: How will the award system be organized and presented?

FO: The submitted films will be screened at the event and the Jurors will be seeing them for the first time. They will watch the films with the audience, exit the theatre briefly to review their grading sheets and then return for the announcement of the awards. The awards— we’re calling them Okys—will be awarded in three categories: Best Cinematography, Best Narrative, and Best Overall.

IT: Please brief ly describe how each submission will be graded.

FO: Each film will be graded by the Jurors using a rubric with different categories and involve a simple point system. In the cinematography category: evaluating lighting, use of camera angles, colors or lack thereof, and framing. For narrative: looking at story structure, effectiveness of conveying a story, emotional punch, etc. The film that gets the highest in the cinematography category would receive the “Best Cinematography” Oky. Same thing for the film that gets the highest in the narrative category. If the film gets high points in all categories, it receives an Oky for “Best Overall” film.

Village began February 4, 2002 at the demand of a disgruntled community that felt, at that time, voiceless; a group looking for greater equity for students of color or from low-income families. They wanted greater opportunity, a truly equitable education system for everyone: it was an effort to ensure the district’s policy that race, gender or disability would not be a predictor of academic success. A steering committee was formed, creating an organization based on the premise of a well-known African proverb: “it takes a village to raise a child.” Given the structure of the Ithaca City School District, this is important to note and emphasize: in a place where eight

The rationale for ICSD holding off on the vote is largely to await the result of a bill working its way through the state senate and assembly right now to fix this problem which, according to a letter of understanding drafted by BOCES superintendents obtained by The Ithaca Times, is affecting about seven districts statewide. The likelihood of changing this – especially in the face of what appears to be a legacy issue for the Governor – seems low. Even though something resembling the ideal of a cost-saving consolidation measure the state would normally back, the legacy of this piece of legislation isn’t promising. In 2015, the proposal went into the session-ending megadeal colloquially referred to as “the big ugly” in Albany, calling for the provision to allow the state’s Office of Budget and Finance to carve out BOCES funds from the tax lev y limit. Though the governor passed the big ugly, that component of the deal was left behind.

“I’m not extremely optimistic we’re going to solve this on a route that hasn’t been tried already,” said Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton, a sponsor of the bill.

With several weeks of session left, there is still plenty of lobbying to be done and, politics being politics, anything can pass with the right sweetener. But will it?

“I can’t say for sure,” said Lifton.

“I hope we pass the bill as a statement… I think there’s hope the assembly will pass it, on the other hand the governor has the last word on what the state agencies do, they haven’t acted on this, so will he sign the bill? I’m dubious about that.”

After More Than A Century Downtown, Immaculate Conception School To Close Its Doors

D

ating back to the 19th century, Immaculate Conception School has long been a constant in the Catholic community for Ithacans, both by way of education and worship at its nearby affiliated church.

That run will come to an end after classes break for summer, according to a letter to the ICS community released last week from parish pastor Reverend Augustine Chumo and the school ’s principa l, Donald Mills. The decision comes at the recommendation of the Rochester Diocese Bishop, Salvatore Matano, who also released a statement, citing the reasons for closure as “low enrollment and depleted resources. June 21 will be its

last day. The co-educational Catholic school – Tompkins County’s only one – has been open since 1884 and, historically, has averaged approximately 100 students from eight school districts in the region.

In a letter from Bishop Salvatore Matano, the bishop said while it was “painful to see the closing of another Catholic school,” he appreciated the service and longstanding tradition that school leadership had demonstrated in its history which dates four years before the incorporation of the City of Ithaca.

“The closure of Immaculate Conception School is painful for all concerned, but is based on the assessment of declining enrollment, increasing cost

projections and the impact those elements have had and will have on the future of the welfare of the parish,” the letter from ICS reads. “ Wit h G o d ’s g r a c e , we will support and comfort one another, knowing we did all we could to keep our beloved school open as long as we could,” read the letter from Fr. Chumo. “We pray that your family will find the strength to celebrate Immaculate Conception School throughout the remainder of the school year [...] This letter is unable to truly articulate our gratitude to the faculty and staff, the school families, and above all, the children.”

would have far-reaching effects from the airport to the Cayuga Lake waterfront.

The grant is part of a the Upstate Airpor t Economic Development and Revitalization Competition, announced last summer. It’s a statewide program that invites upstate New York airports to apply for grants to improve their airport experience. The five best proposals, as chosen by the state, receive $40 million each, and so far have included airports in Plattsburgh, Syracuse, Rochester and Elmira on the list.

Ithaca Tompkins Regional submitted a two-pronged proposal to the state: includ-

ing plans to upgrade the airport’s terminal and move the New York State Department of Transportation facility off the waterfront and to the airport’s property. Doing so, Airport Manager Mike Hall said, would open up that area for mixed-use housing development, a sorely needed resource considering Tompkins County’s well-documented housing struggles. The total cost of the project would be something in the mid-$30 million range, with nearly an even split spent between the terminal and the DOT move. Hall said in a let-

to interacting directly with the school’s administration from as early as kindergarten, to be a consistent part of parent’s and student’s lives. They partner with Southside Community Center, with GIAC, the Ithaca Youth Bureau, to offer tutoring and college readiness classes to allow for a seamless transition into college. It’s all part of the Village’s strategy to offer programs only as they are needed, to identify – and fulfill – the ICSD community’s most pressing needs.

Their five week summer program, which does everything from help kids from grade 2 all the way up to their senior year stay ahead of the curve come fall, has grown from six students to more than 30 just five years later, helping to guide students along in everything from chemistry to trigonometry to – in one case – Latin. As such, good things have happened. Graduation rates have increased, the disparity for African American and Latino students has decreased, graduation rates rising more than 20 percent over the past decade (though, according to the latest equity report card, some students have been left behind). 20 fewer students dropped out in 2016 than 2012. Performance in general has improved, in no small part due to organizations like The Village that have captured atrisk or vulnerable students, collecting the 20 or 30 percent of students in a district who may need some extra resources to get by and pushing them over the finish line. Of course there’s still work to do: even with a 92 percent graduation rate, there’s 8 percent of students who don’t quite make it, leaving groups like the Village to contemplate what more can be done.

“We know we haven’t arrived as of yet because nationally, we still have an achievement gap,” Yearwood said. “Within this community, we shouldn’t have one being that our three largest employers are educational institutions. Always hearing about the work we do and always connecting with the people we serve… for families to find any kind of support is important.”

Ups&Downs ▶ The Ithaca City School District for putting together a pretty solid budget. The second straight year with a rate decrease with a ratio to the levy that actually benefits most people. Though development has a huge hand in that, it’s still pretty cool. ▶ ICS Closing which is just really sad for pretty much everybody involved. Can’t imagine the commute for parents looking to get their kids a Catholic School education next year.

Heard&Seen ▶ The Multicultural Resource Center is celebrating 30 years of operations this week, with a big event at The Space @ Greenstar. The event, which features music, food, Ben and Jerry’s ice cream and a presentation on the organization’s impact locally (it is, after all, their annual meeting) kicks off at 5:30 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. $5 to $10 donation is suggested. ▶ Buskers are back! And, is it just me? Or have they seemed to have been really good lately?

The other day had a guitar/fiddle duo. Earlier this week, there was a bluegrass duo. In a town where, if you swing a shopping bag, you hit a guitar player, there’s been a delightful amount of diversity out there.

oan Ormondroyd was born in the Manhattan one year before the Crash that fueled the Great Depression. Unable to afford college, Joan’s father worked as a pipe fitter on large ships. during the Depression the family moved to California, but found no work for shipbuilders in California either, so Joan’s father worked odd jobs on a farm, and her mother worked in a “dime store,” and at Sears Roebuck. Eventually studying shorthand and typing at night Joan’s mother got a secretarial job in the late ‘30s and, by 1941, ships were being built again, as the U.S. prepared to enter World War II. When Joan was 17 she left her home in Oakland to study at University of California at Berkeley. Surrounded by wannabee writers, musicians, and artists, Joan, and her best friend used their scholarships ($100) toward their rent ($15 a month), tuition ($35 a semester) and books. The University of California’s population mushroomed, as young men armed with the GI Bill arrived on campus, eager to get on with life. Before long Joan was married and she and her husband were packing for Mexico. In high school Joan had studied Spanish, was eager to travel, and her husband found a master’s program in import /export business in Mexico. $110 a month from the GI Bill was plenty to pay for an apartment, and enrollment at Mexico City College. The newlyweds boarded their first airplane and arrived in Mexico in 1949. Joan’s love for Mexico has not diminished over the

years.

The couple returned with their first born and shortly after return to California a second child was born. Joan raised her growing family with a third child and a teaching career in the Davis, California school system. After a stint in Victoria, British Columbia running an alternative school based on Scottish educator A.S. Neill’s Summerhill, Joan and her four children returned to Berkeley in 1968. Juggling kids, a full-time job, and a complete scholarship Joan completed her Masters in Library Science. “This was a great choice,” she said. “A real boon. Having a degree in Library Science offered me so many possibilities.”

In Joan’s case the “possibilities” were lifechanging: One day while observing the Toucans at a nearby zoo with her she recognized a tall, handsome colleague from the Contra Costa County Library where she worked. A part-time cataloguer, while completing his second children’s book, Edward soon sent Joan a note and asked if she liked to take walks. Years later when Time at the Top was completed, Edward dedicated it “to Joan and the Toucans, who started it all”. Edward Ormondroyd grew up in Swarthmore, PA where he had space and freedom, and two sets of grandparents nearby.

ntil recently, when I got my bills from New York State Electric and Gas, I was under the naïve impression that I was being billed for…well, electricity. And gas. As it turns out, energy use is but an afterthought on a NYSEG bill. . I mean, who takes the time to read those things? Well, I did, and I was shocked. Living, as we do, in the City of Ithaca, I thought I knew all there was to know about being nickeled and dimed. Ha! I don’t mind sharing this – it’s my April, 2017 bill from NYSEG, and it’s all real. How soon one forgets. ObamaCare draft was so huge not many read the whole thing. Didn’t Nancy Pelosi say that (basically) “let’s vote on it and pass it. Then see what it consists of.?”

I could go completely off the grid, but that sounds like a lot of effort and lifestyle disruption. Like wearing long sleeves in winter. So instead, I’m going to crank it up to 80 and continue to pay tribute to the Energy Barons as tradition dictates. Where is Nikola Tesla now that we really need him?

f you noticed our coverage of the school budget last week, you may have noticed that for many people, your school taxes will be going down.

While for most people, the reduction will be insignificant, this is still an impressive accomplishment considering in many districts, taxes keep going up and up and up and as such, people’s overall tax bill is affected.

New York State, as backward as it is, sets up its institutions to be funded largely through property taxes. That’s just the way it is. And as need grows, buildings age and education evolves, more money is needed. If you have a limited tax pool to draw from, you’re going to need to ask more of them.

Or you can expand the pool.

Say what you will about development’s role in affecting the small town vibe of the city. Theorize all you want about the construction of market rate housing and how it might impact our affordable housing crisis. New construction is helping to fund our schools and make our schools better.

Whether that will ultimately affect property values further is a speculative science – after all, people look to move their families where the schools are good, raising prices – but at the end of the day, opposing development when it has effects like this is opposing good schools, paved roads and a vibrant community with well-funded social services. Deal with it.

Upon graduation from high school Edward shipped out with the US Navy and served in the Pacific Campaign during WW II serving two years on a destroyer escort. Demobilized in San Francisco in 1945, Edward entered the University of California Berkeley on the GI Bill. He majored in English and over the next few years he married, fathered three children, and in 1957 published his first children’s book, “David and the Phoenix,” the book for which he is best known today. Eventually Edward returned to the University of California at Berkeley for a Master’s degree in Library Science. That degree led him to the job in Contra Costa County, which led him to Joan.

After an unusual courtship between two single parents with seven kids in the mix, Edward and Joan began thinking of life’s possibilities. Joan, who had once gone back to New York City as a child, recalled how entranced she had been by the energy and colorfulness of East Coast culture. Edward welcomed the idea of returning to his childhood environs.

Inspired by the works of Louis Bromfield and Strout Farm Catalogs, Joan and Edward quit their jobs, and with two KIDS embarked across country in 1971. Heading for farm life in New England, Edward, now in his nineties recalls, “We launched ourselves on Fortune’s Bosom in a retrofitted VW bus.”

Arriving in the Finger Lakes region in July they stopped in Ithaca to visit the Ornithology Lab (a lifetime ambition of Edward’s) and to renew acquaintance with Ruth and Peter Kahn, whom Joan had met in Canada in the ‘60’s. The Ormondroyds fell in love with the area; and with Ruth’s encouragement they explored farm land for sale. To their dismay they discovered that the Strout Catalog was years out of date when it came to land prices; so they settled for a small piece of acreage in Newfield where Edward designed and built their home. A house on Hudson Street in Ithaca was their temporary home, with teens’ bedrooms tucked away in every nook and cranny, since three more of their children had joined them. While Edward built their home, he finished writing his next book, “All in Good Time,” a sequel to “Time at the Top” which had been published by Parnassus Press a few years earlier. When Edward finished their home and sent off his book to the publisher, it was time for him to seek a day job. Fortuitously, a cataloging position had just opened in the Finger Lakes Library System, where Edward worked for the next ten years.

Joan, during this period, worked in the Cornell libraries where she was head reference librarian in the undergraduate department libraries.

By 1979 all the kids were launched and Joan and Edward found themselves in a very large, emptied out house. After hours they gardened, walked the trails of Connecticut Hill, avidly admired the birds, devoured books, and entertained their friends at lively, colorful, musicfilled dinners. Upon Edward’s retirement in 1985, Joan bought him an upright Steinway and he began taking piano lessons with Trudy Borden. Edward had played flute, cello, oboe, and recorder over the years, but learning to play the piano was a lifelong dream.

By Vaughn Golden Barbara Lifton NY State Assembly The assembly passed a bill to expand the legal description of rape in New York State. The current penal code defines rape under “its ordinary meaning and occurs upon any penetration,” but the new law would expand that definition to include any sexual contact. Lifton voted in favor of the bill which unanimously passed the assembly.

It has since been sent to the senate and referred to the Codes Committee on which Senator O’Mara is a sitting member. The assembly also passed a bill, 131 to 7 with Lifton in agreement, that requires those convicted of domestic violence charges to surrender their firearms.

Lifton is sponsoring legislation that continues to work its way through the assembly that would clarify the creation and storage of electronic records..

Tom O’Mara NY State Senate The New York State Senate voted unanimously this week to add Fentanyl to the list of Schedule 1 opiates. The new designation means that New York recognizes Fentanyl, a prescription drug widely being used as a low-cost alternative to replace heroin, to be monitored highly and involve tighter restrictions before it is prescribed. Senator O’Mara, as well as almost all of the Senate, voted in favor of the bill, which now makes its way to the Assembly’s health committee where it will likely pass and be sent to the governor’s desk.

The Senate also widely reformed the state’s code involving gangs. The bill revises the existing legislation to narrow the definition of a street gang and gang violence and ultimately increase the prosecution of those groups. Senator O’Mara was a cosponsor of the legislation.

Tom Reed U.S. Congress Congressman Reed continued to field questions and concerns about the American Healthcare Act during town hall events over the weekend and attributed a large amount of confusion about the bill to misinformation.

“There are no cuts. We did not touch Medicaid or Medicare in the American Healthcare Act,” Reed told a conference call to local media last Tuesday. “That has nothing to do with that. There is no legislative text that deals with Medicare in this legislation.” Reed also made a point to clarify that the bill would not affect patients with pre-existing conditions and that interpretations that said otherwise were operating under a false theoretical situation.

The congressman also commented on the investigation into President Trump’s dealings with Russia following the firing of FBI director James Comey saying, “Until we get the evidence driving this process, I think the calls for a special investigator are more political in nature than in substance.”

Reed also announced Monday that he has included a measure in the spending plan to increase funding to West Valley, a site for nuclear waste cleanup in the western reaches of the 23rd District.

“The Fired Three” The Inside Story Of A Unionization Effort’s Fallout.

was the first official announcement from Ithaca College’s contingent faculty members, a tweet sent at 11:25 p.m. on March 26. “We won everything we set out to win today…”

The agreement the faculty had obtained came after 18 months of negotiations with the IC administration, an accord reached just over a day before the contingent faculty members were set to strike in protest of what they had argued for more than a year were inequitable labor conditions. Those 18 months came down to the last 11 hours of bargaining, a Sunday night crash session t hat, when finished, saw the contingent faculty representatives fist-pumping, hugging and crying.

As the terms of the contract emerged, it was the conclusion the contingent faculty had wanted, but one that had been in severe doubt. Both sides had been trading barbs, primarily via Intercom – the school’s online bulletin board – and, in the weeks leading up to the agreement, the distance between the two still seemed vast, with tension lingering over pay parity (“equal pay for equal work,” the rallying cry was) and increased job stability.

The term “contingent faculty,” otherwise known as adjunct faculty, means professors who are non-tenure eligible and work either full- or part-time. Prior to the contract’s ratification in April, all contingent faculty worked on single year contracts. Contingent faculty comprise 41 percent of the total faculty workforce 8

Pretty Tough

thought I was pretty tough when I was my 20’s, but when I went to my first Cornell gymnastics meet in 1982 and saw Ellen Mayer nail a back flip on a 4-inch wide balance beam, I thought, There’s no way I would ever have the guts to try that.

I would also see Kelley McGoldrick make a comeback and compete again after breaking her fifth lumbar vertebrae, and I recall that Birgit Zeeb actually walked around campus in a halo that was screwed into her skull after breaking her cervical

One of those former gymnasts is Mara (Horwitz) Smith, a Lake Placid-based sports psychologist who was asked to say a few words at the ceremony. After an impromptu, abbreviate Karaoke version of “What a Fool Believes,” Mara conveyed that it seemed to strange to be celebrating Betsy’s retirement 30-some years after meeting her, because after all, “She seemed so old when we met her!” Actually, the coach was only 28 years-old then, and Mara described her as “thorough and organized,” and as “the consummate professional.” She added, “We didn’t have a name for this back then, but Betsy was our ‘Life Coach.’ She raised the bar – pun intended.”

I asked Ellen (Mayer) Sabik for her thoughts, and she offered, “Betsy was our stability. During my senior year, I was taking a course that was driving me crazy… I was lost… and I quit the team. Betsy didn’t say anything, and I dropped the course and came back. She knew.” Ellen added, “Those lessons have served me well as a working mother – how to manage my time and prioritize.” I would speculate that such things are important when one’s job is as demanding as Ellen’s, given she is a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic.

Kelley McGoldrick lives near Boston and runs her own firm as a Chartered Financial Analyst, and she stated, “Betsy was a powerful presence, and she was part of that big lesson that life is a challenge, and you face it. I would not have made it through without her. She never lowered the bar, and it’s funny how life makes sense when you look back.”

Kelley’s classmate Karen (Walsh) Davis added “What she told us we believed. She demanded that we did our best in everything, and that we persevered no matter what. She cared, and we knew it. She was my rock.”

Betsy East looks back over the years and says “They’ll always be ‘my kids,’ and by being there they made my retirement celebration so much more special. I know that some of them say I had an impact on them, but they have all had a huge impact on me.

In some ways, I grew up with them and to see them become everything from wonderful mothers to cardiologists and so many other things has been wonderful. Now, their families are my family too, and when I see their kids (like Birgit’s son, Logan, who is will graduate from Cornell this year), it’s like they’re my grandkids.”

To more clearly illustrate that “my kids” theme, Betsy thought back to Birgit (Zeeb) Stevenson’s senior year, when she broke her neck. “I had moved from coaching to being an Associate Athletic Director that year, but I was at the meet at Providence. Birgit was in the hospital, and her family couldn’t get there right away so I stayed with her for about a week.”

Thinking back, Betsy offered, “When they arrived (at Cornell), they were 17 or 18 years old, and it was such a pleasure helping them to grow up.” She thought about that statement for a moment, and added “That’s

to the DOT’s chief engineer Wahid Albert that the economic impact of the proposed plan would be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Ideally, the move would centralize most of the vital transportation bodies of the area into one location and away from the waterfront, which historically was the most convenient place for it considering its access to waterways and train tracks, but that era has passed and new needs have presented

“Our intent over time is to bring the New York State Department of Transportation, TCAT, Ithaca Fire Training facility, and possibly Ithaca Department of Public Works up to this piece of property that is the airport,” he said. “The waterfront’s been encumbered for years by transportation [...] Today, there’s a higher and better use for that property than public transportation related facilities.”

As for the terminal upgrades, Hall said they would play an important factor as well for the future of the airport, making it larger and more efficient. Part of the money would also be used by the airport to create a Federal Customs facility so the airport could eventually receive international flights, inviting more foreign business investment since it would then be an even easier destination for those types of business-people. Making the changes more significant is actually events at other regional airports, as American and United airlines have pulled their services from Binghamton and Elmira airports, which has resulted in a boom in those passengers to Ithaca.

Tompkins County Legislature Chair Mike Lane is part of the large team from Tompkins County Area Development that worked on the grant application. He said the terminal upgrades were significant, including the customs facility, and were important to ensure the contentment of the airlines that currently serve the airport, which are American, United and Delta.

“It’s important to understand that the Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport is a viable airport and I think the airlines are recognizing that, and really stronger as a business model than other airports in the region,” Lane said. “We’re probably where contin u ed on page 12

A Legislature Candidate For District 4

A

s the race for the County Legislature heats up, Reed Steberger’s candidate origin story mirrors one that Tompkins County has heard quite a bit during the last several months, and one that is not uncommon across the country. While, in people’s careers, they may have interacted with the political system or been deeply interested in social issues, taking that next step to actually run for public office was not part of the immediate plan.

“Then the election happened,” Steberger said. “I woke up the next day and I realized that we are going to have to do things that are unusual and uncommon, and we are going to have to push ourselves into other lines of work.”

Steberger began their work as a community organizer in 2010, when they (Steberger identifies as genderqueer and uses them/they/their pronouns) assisted workers who were pushing back against Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s anti-union campaign to organize a demonstration. Steberger had always viewed themself as more of a behind-the-scenes player than someone who was involved in the actual policy-making; they always thought they could hold office but their passion, and career, had always been devising platforms for other people to speak out. As an organizer, they

have focused on racial injustice such as mass incarceration, the rights of the LGBTQ community, as well as environmental awareness about climate change and labor unionization efforts, among other issues like housing. Now the 27 year-old Cornell graduate is challenging current Fourth District legislator Rich John, who was elected as a write-in candidate in 2015. Both are running as Democrats. Steberger chose to enter the county legislature race, as opposed to contending for a m o r e e nt r y- l e v e l office, both because t he i r c om mu n it y organizing work has focused on issues at the county level and, citing a quote from cu r rent leg islator Carol Chock, when you call Albany and can say you’re a county councilperson, people listen.

“I have been working on issues at the county level since I came to Ithaca,” they said, noting their time on the Tompkins County Climate Protection Initiative and work regarding the proposed Tompkins County Jail expansion.

“It’s an area that I’m familiar with, so it makes sense for me to aim for the county level.”

office’s control or how to most effectively communicate a message to the different levels of government in New York. Inflamed by the election, they now want to implement those lessons from a more influential position. For instance, they said, changing the lens through which we view issues that affect the community – an especially salient point regarding mass incarceration. Steberger said if we view issues like these through the prism of antiracism – drawing upon new information like the book The New Jim Crow – there’s a better chance for effective problem-solving.

Steberger’s central political message lies with an urging of local politics to engage with their constituents on a more personal level, something far more achievable at the county level of government or smaller. As most would, Steberger pointed to housing as the most pressing county legislature issue, especially for the Fourth District which is largely

populated by Ithaca’s student population.

Another point Steberger accentuated was the rhetoric used by politicians when responding to their constituents’ concerns.

Too often, they said, politicians will use ‘It’s complicated’ to brush off a question or issue brought to them by a citizen, an answer that is true but nonetheless unsatisfactory. Their campaign is more than a run for office built on policy-based goals, as Steberger talks about their intentions to reinvigorate, and possibly reinvent, the thought processes of the Tompkins County Legislature with nearly as much passion as his policy goals. The thinking in the legislature has stagnated, Steberger said, and in order for successful solutions to the main problems facing the county an evolution needs to take place.

Lane views the future of the airport as a destination spot with high traffic, especially relative to the size and population of the area. The lack of other effective routes into Ithaca like a direct highway or railroad connection means the airport takes on even more significance to the community and its economics.

What Hall thinks sets the Ithaca Tompkins proposal aside is that its economic effect would theoretically be multi-faceted, stretching beyond just the property of the airport itself, a factor Hall said he thought would help the proposal gain traction among the lawmakers in Albany.

“Our grant is unusual in the sense that other airports [...] they all focused on the terminal itself, which is iconic, it’s your front door,” Hall said. “But ours actually is much more focused on, what I think it should be, which is stimulating economic development. We certainly need a global portal here to support our primary industry here, which is education [...] You have to think of an airport as more than just

That community impact, it seems, was profound even to the school’s dying days.

News of the closing has brought relatively widespread grief on social media, with alumni, former teachers and parishioners all joined by Ithacans sad to see a Catholic school option submerge.

Tricia Anderson and all six of her siblings attended ICS, meaning at least one Anderson sibling was there from 1958 until 1979. She spoke lovingly about the school and her education there, and said she even implements some of the strategies that she saw in classrooms at ICS during her teaching career now.

“We had bank accounts, they taught us about banking from the time we were in first grade all the way up,” she said. “Every Tuesday, everybody in the school could put money in their bank accounts [...] I remember when I got out of eighth grade, we didn’t have a lot of money, but for us it was a lot of money, and it was ours. I still had that bank account right up until I got married.”

She said she remembers her favorite teachers during her time there were her first grade teacher Mrs. McIsaac, who taught her how to read, and Sister Carmelita. Many formative education moments took place for her at ICS, and she laughs remembering the realization she would have to take biology and trigonometry seriously and how she used to help her second grade teacher mark papers and quizzes, solidifying her future as a school teacher herself.

“We had a very solid foundation, and I think many of those kids today do as well,” Anderson said. “It breaks my heart to know that there’s education for these kids, and families that wanted it, that is now no

Hall said he was unsure of the status of the award, and had heard nothing from state officials. Another factor Hall said falls in favor of Ithaca’s airport, and that makes it stand out from other upstate New York airports, is that it imports well. Other airports often see most of their traffic leaving the area, meaning the only economic benefit that can possibly be gained from those passengers is, as Hall puts it, “selling them a cup of coffee on the way through.”

With Ithaca’s education market, however, it puts the area in an interesting position of strength that is both uncommon and fortunate among other upstate transportation facilities.

One common theme of the school’s community that was brought up over and over again by people who spent time involved was its familial feeling. Anderson said there was an everybody-knows-everybody type of atmosphere when she was enrolled, with friends’ parents serving as lunch monitors and trip chaperones.

Others shared the sentiment. April Miller, who taught at the school from 2008-2015, said it was a dream teaching experience for her, one she only left after her husband got a new job in Virginia.

Though obviously it would soon doom the school, the small amount of students allowed for a deeper learning experience and relationship with her students.

“When families come to the school, they immediately feel that sense of family,” she said, commenting on the small-school atmosphere that contributed to not only a sense of welcoming among its members, but a more effective education even. “It’s just such a nice environment [ …] You were able to just be there for the kids, and teach them the way they needed to be taught.”

Miller’s fondest memory is the daily morning prayer, the brief moment the school as a whole paused before beginning their day. She said she hoped the kids and families who were now losing ICS found the right path to education and comfort after this unfortunate blow. Anderson’s gone back to the school several times to show her children the row of pictures on the school’s walls that show each graduating class, pointing out the numerous aunts and uncles who attended ICS. “I’m just really, really sorry to see it go,” she said.

changing,” Shulman said of having space when trying to create a business. “We love it when students start companies as students because when they become successful, when they stay in Ithaca they have great resources like Rev, so they can go from our resources on campus and then literally roll down the hill to Rev.” The eHub building also houses some programs designed to help start-ups in more specific ways such as the eLab program, which caters to a wide variety of companies, 12 of which are from students in Cornell’s current graduating class. eLab has been around since well before the opening of eHub, and serves as an accelerator to equip young companies with money, resources and mentorship. B e yond prov id i ng a st r uc t u re i n which success ca n be bred, t he collaboration and competition that spawns between different companies working in close quarters has created a vibrant community that Rev coordinator Jeremiah Cotman said was probably Rev’s most important achievement since its founding. Much like Shulman, Cotman said the community has become an integral part of the start-up process, and will assist in future economic development as it builds.

“Especially for our earliest members, it made a huge difference for them to know that there were other start-ups,” Cotman said. “They can come to a place and learn from people who have had successful start-ups before, but also see a community of other people working hard to start new companies.”

Cotman emphasized that the communal aspect to the start-up environment in town has also contributed to a better, less emotionally burdensome start-up experience. Creating a start-up just a few years ago in Ithaca could have been a pretty lonely, demoralizing experience, Cotman said, as the community was not connected so it would have been difficult to realize the common challenges one could face during a company’s infancy.

Anunziata and Saran both said facilities like eHub and Rev would go a long way to ma k ing It haca a n even more business-friendly environment, an effect that will hopefully grow as more and more companies spring out of the area.

Like Cotman, Anunziata said the startup culture has taken on a supportive, fostering atmosphere in which businesses can support each other, even just with a passing word of encouragement.

A Growing Street Food Empire

A

fter opening close to half a dozen restaurants in the same town, one would think the process would be muted and methodical about digging into the next venture: a process calculated and carried out with authoritative voice on each and every facet of its construction.

Kevin Sullivan, the enthusiastic, glowing proprietor of upstart Luna Street Food, shows that empire-building – and the interior design of each new conquest – can be an exciting prospect. In the midst of a mildweathered lunch rush on Restaurant Row, Sullivan gestures around the half-finished renovations of the former Jade Gardens Restaurant which, mere weeks from now, will serve as gratification of a life of entre-

preneurship. He points out the chalkboard paint on the walls, a ready canvas for the chalky calligraphy that will soon constitute his menu. He describes the fixtures to come, accents of iron piping and glass, that will add life to the newly opened space. And, in a flourish for the Ithaca Times’ photographer, Casey Martin, he opens the space’s overhead door out onto the street, giving passersby the chance to gawk into what will soon be the newest addition to Aurora Street’s vibrant restaurant scene and Luna’s second downtown location.

“I used to live across the street and I would stare at this space,” said Sullivan. “I thought to myself then, ‘if I was ever going to open a restaurant downtown, I would want

it here.’”

Today an overseer of a sprawling suite of brick and mortar restaurants, pop-up and catering, Sullivan’s come a long way from his roots running a DJ business as a teen in Moravia and, later, Ithaca, where he opened his first business at 22. Like his career, Luna’s growth has been rapid, one marked by an innate sense of innovation and an aggressive foresight derived from a deep understanding of the Ithaca market. Since opening up its street food-inspired restaurant on Stewart Avenue in 2015, Sullivan has added a catering division, a regular contract with the Ithaca Yacht Club, and an operating kitchen within Lot 10, as part of his strategy to corner what he refers to as “the summer problem:” the quiet months when the college kid dollars run dry.

“In the city, many service businesses suffer when the college kids are gone,” he said. “That’s been a problem of mine since day one. I always tell people ‘I’d be halfway to retirement if I wasn’t losing money every summer.’ It’s hard on the staff, one of the challenges in this town is the seasonality. These are big steps forward – the Ithaca Yacht Club and Aurora Street – to solve the summer problem.”

To some, opening a third location in what is generally considered a pretty small town may be seen as saturating the market, perhaps even being a move some may see as redundant. Sullivan calls it a safe bet.

His perspective formed not only by years as a businessman but as one tailored by the community, Sullivan has a keen intuition into the sensibilities of his clientele. It’s a safe bet, he knows, opening three separate locations within a mile of each other simply because he knows how his customers will think: Aurora Street’s customers will be the crowd not willing to trudge up to the Stewart Avenue location dominated by Cornellians, nor will they pop into Lot 10 to get served by the kitchen designated for those with a

hankering during open mic night. The key to solving the “summer problem,” Sullivan said, is to make yourself available to all demographics, offering a differently targeted experience to maximize on customers who may not seek out one location or another.

“I think they’re all world apart,” Sullivan said, diners walking past the open storefront. “We might not even be serving just a different demographic: maybe even the same demographic, but just at a different time like you know, at lunch, versus dinner. In a location like Aurora Street, I think there will be enough business to support it.”

The success of the downtown location, Sullivan said, will entail a sort of selective sense of efficiency: there will be no waiters, replaced by touchscreen kiosks at each table. The experience will be facilitated by food runners, whose job is simply to bring food to each table, take away plates and provide refills while the kitchen staff flies to send each ticket out. Everyone gets paid the same, the tips from each check going into a pool and split evenly at the end of each shift. This type of innovation – being choosy about what you implement – can actually go toward the benefit of the service industry as a whole: customers get faster service and therefore, tables get turned around, meaning more sales. In turn, runners and kitchen staff get paid equitably all while becoming part of the machine, rather than replaced by it.

“People are always reactionary in the market, about adding kiosks to eliminate workers because wages rise,” Sullivan said.

“In the service industry, in general, people need to make more money. Minimum wage is not enough to raise a family, much less one person. The industry has sort of fallen behind a lot of other industries in utilizing technology to create efficiency that benefits everyone involved: customers, employees, bottom lines… we’re trying to be ahead of that. We want technology to be a tool.”

he Tompkins County Public Library is in a building that was once a Woolworths, with a lunch counter and all. Iszard’s was a department store on the Commons in the 1990s. And people still talk about the treats and down home atmosphere at the Home Dairy, a beloved local retailer.

It seems as if the retail landscape is always changing. When a retailer hangs around, we notice. Schooley’s on the Commons comes to mind, and Ag way on Meadow Street. You may have missed out on Home Dairy, but Purity Ice Cream, in a new incarnation, still thrives.

When WalMart made a bid to enter the Ithaca area in 1995, there was staunch resistance. So much so that the giant corporation decided to back off. The resistors won that battle, but lost the war. Walmart eventually opened, a Supercenter no less.

More national retailers entered our market when the economy became large enough to support them.

Despite all the changes along Route 13 and the entry of national retail outlets, Ithaca is no retailing Mecca. Retail sales per capita lag behind many nearby counties.

The fact that Ithaca is not a commercial retailing center suits some people just fine. Other folks appreciate the presence of national retail chain stores. Whatever your preferences, it appears as if the retail landscape is changing once again.

Online vendors are grabbing a larger share of the sales that typically went to brick and mortar stores. This new system is extremely efficient. The merchandise goes right from the warehouse to your house.

Environmentalists applaud the reduction in carbon emissions due to package delivery as opposed to everyone driving to the stores. Consumers like the prices and convenience of shopping at home.

The online shopping trend has held down jobs in retailing while promoting jobs in warehousing.

Here in Ithaca, the number of retail jobs peaked at 5,200 in 2005. Today there are 4,800 jobs in retailing. The trend is clear. Even the big national chain stores cannot defend our retail sector against this new onslaught. There is only one sure-fire remedy. We need a huge warehouse operation to replace those lost retail jobs. Some of the newer warehouses are as big as 20 football fields. Anyone know where we can build one?

Back in May 2008, Bjerken and Yampolsky explained to me that it had always been their dream to mount this kind of festival. And since then they have been dedicated to creating arguably the best classical music event of the season. Mayfest has become a special time for them to welcome and make music with friends, both old and new. And so it continues to bring pleasure to music lovers as well.

Several familiar visiting artists are returning along with the Formosa Quartet. Their “wonderful” violinist Lin was here for a recital a few years ago, and is quite involved in this year’s Mayfest in various ways. Cellist Plesser and violinist Xiao-Dong Wang are back for their fifth time. Returning Cornell alums are fortepianist Mike Cheng-Lu Lee, who studied with Malcolm Bilson and won 2nd place in the 2011Westfield International Fortepiano Competition held at Cornell, and pianist Daniel Anastasio, former student of both Xak and Miri, now at SUNY Stony Brook.

Works by two former composition students, Jesse Jones and Zachary Wadsworth, are also included. New to Mayfest is violist Paul Laraia, a widely praised soloist and chamber performer, 1st-place winner of the Sphinx competition in 2008, and member of the Catalyst Quartet since 2013.

Resident musicians from the Cornell faculty include a regular performer, cellist John Haines-Eitzen; university organist Annette Richards; director of orchestras Chris Younghoon Kim; percussionist and lecturer in performance Michael Sparhuber; and assistant director of choral music Stephen Spinelli. Bass player Desmond Bratton, a visiting lecturer, teaches also at Opus Ithaca, as does well-known soprano soloist Tamara Acosta. From Ithaca College come bass player Nicholas Walker, violinist Susan Waterbury, and composer Dana Wilson. The “amazing” Kristin Zaryski, “a treasure to the community and the high school,” will direct the IHS Chorale. tine Kitano; and Edward Dougherty from TC3. Not to mention—again—Lin, who wrote “Night of H’s” to music by Wilson.

The programming for this year is tends toward the traditional. There are no anniversaries of great composers to commemorate. Nor is any particular country or style or theme emphasized. There is no new commission but rather a repeat of a former work. We will hear more traditional chamber pieces from classic German and Austrian composers—Bach, Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, and Brahms, plus two full and rich pieces for larger ensembles.

Mayfest opens very personally and “close to the heart,” on May 19 in Barnes Hall with Xak and Miri performing music together in the Suite No. 2 for two pianos, op. 17, by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Miri, who plays Piano I, admitted that “this is very special. There is no other pianist I’d rather play with than Xak.” The work is in four movements, each with a story. Written at the same time and in the same key as the familiar 2nd piano concerto, it is “exciting, pure beauty, a whole life story in one piece.” Four Jazz Tunes by contemporary jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli, who died in 1997, will be presented by the Formosa Quartet in an arrangement by Lin. Program I closes with Schubert’s beloved “Trout” Piano Quintet in A major, D.667. Miri will be joined by four students, two from Cornell—freshman violinist David Zhang and violist Sean Chung, PhD candidate in

Engineering—and two IHS sophomores— Owen Cummings, cello, and Misha Bjerken, double bass.

May 20 offers yoga in the morning and wine tasting in the afternoon, followed by the evening Concert II in Barnes (all concerts except Sunday afternoon start at 8 p.m.). The special chamber program opens with Haydn’s Piano Trio in E major, Hob. XV:28, to be performed by fortepianist Mike Lee with violinist Wayne Lee (no relation) and cellist Pae from the Formosa Quartet, which then follows with the Bartók String Quartet No. 4. After Intermission Miri joins them to play the Schumann Piano Quintet in E-flat major, op. 44. The Haydn performance is dedicated to Cornell professor of violin emerita Sonya Monosoff, in celebration of her 90th birthday, while the Schumann honors Percy Browning, a supporter of Mayfest from the beginning.

On Sunday, May 21, following the second yoga session, is the concert on animal themes in Sage Chapel at 4 p.m. The Cornell Chamber Singers, led by Spinelli, open Program III with “The Bluebird”

The program closes with The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns.

In fourteen movements—of which most describe various animals (including pianists)—the work will be played by a tenpiece orchestra (also including pianists), conducted by Chris Kim. The narrator is Ithaca-based poet and radio interviewer Tish Pearlman, whose Sunday morning interview program “Out of Bounds” has been heard and appreciated on WSKG since 2005.

Mayfest moves downtown to the Unitarian Church for the evening Concert IV, a chamber program that opens with Lee on violin and Lee on fortepiano playing Mozart’s Violin Sonata in C major, K.296.

Then violinist Wang, violist Laraia, cellist Plesser, and pianist Bjerken perform Fauré’s Piano Quartet No. 2 in G minor, op. 45.

After Intermission comes the glorious and jolly Mendelssohn String Octet in E-flat major, op. 20, with members of the Formosa Quartet joined by violins Wang and Waterbury, violist Laraia, cellist Plesser.

ormer Ithaca Times photographer, IC teacher and current Visiting Research Fellow with the Southeast Asia Program at Cornell University, Brian Arnold, has put together an impressive and vast book about alternative photographic methods. Published through Oxford University Press, Alternative Processes in Photography, is a superbly written, amazingly educational and super tactile take on varying photograph techniques, alternative history and creative possibilities. There’s a unique spirit to the book, blending purpose with creation, and laying out a systematic blueprint for those interested in new modes. There’s also a deep respect for the overall biography of alternative methods and the history of photography, and a presentation that is encouraging to experience. The Ithaca Times caught up with Arnold recently. The Denver native has some great stuff to share.

Here’s the skinny.

Ithaca Times: How long did it take to complete the book, and when did you get a sense that you wanted to write something like this?

Brian Arnold: To be honest, I never thought about writing this book on my own. Oxford University Press contacted me in the spring of 2013 - it was really their idea, and they believed I was the right person to do it. After some discussions with my editor, I wrote a few sample chapters that he sent out for peer review. Apparently those reviews were very good, so he offered me the contract for the book that fall. For the most part, I wrote the book between the spring of 2014 and the fall of 2016.

IT: Was part of writing the book about your desire to reach out to the contemporary photographers of the digital and technological world: you have a lot of photographers out there who’ve probably never even used a darkroom?

BA: While I totally love digital imagining, I also hate how quickly we’ve all embraced it and discarded so much of what came before. I think most people - even photographers - have no idea how diverse photographic printmaking really is. I have always felt that to discard all these photographic processes that came before the tools we have now is negligent, and will ultimately minimize the possibilities of the medium. In teaching and writing about these processes, I hope to keep these traditions alive, to bring them into conversation with digital technologies, and help students and working photographers understand and use the diverse range of photographic possibilities.

science: would you say it’s vital that people interested in photography invest equal time in both subjects?

BA: I think this depends on what you mean by photographer. Realistically, we are all photographers now. things. There is a lot about the science of photography I don’t know much about (optics, for instance), but there are other scientific components I find really interesting (the chemistry of photography). I think knowing these kinds of things - and wanting to know these kinds of things makes the medium so much more interesting, to know the incredible phenomenon of photography. And there is so much to know, it always make one an active learner - curiosity is really the heart of any creative practice.

IT: The chemicals involved in the photographic process can be daunting: there’s no way around them though, is there?

BA: The chemistry can be very daunting and complex, and yet also very simple. It is possible to make photographic prints using only paper stained with berry juice and sunshine; a camera can be an old shoebox with a pinhole in it. I think the chemistry of all can be as simple or complex as you want it to be. One of the reasons I emphasize understanding the mechanics of it all, however, is to stress responsibility. Most photographic chemicals, when handled correctly, are relatively safe; understanding is key.

IT: DIY is an integral aspect to the book: do you think there’s a philosophy behind the photographic process, and is it connected in the broader sense of education and learning?

BA: I believe there is meaning in process. How we make things is part of how we build idea and our relationship with our own ideas. It’s not necessarily that I think DIY is the best way to go, but I also feel students and young artists should be exposed to as many ways of visual thinking as possible, and processes and materials are apart of how visual thinking is developed.

IT: When you created your first print, what was the feeling like, and were you obsessed at that moment?

BA: That’s a hard question to answer because it was so long ago that I made my first print. I can say, however, that I know in my teens that I was an artist, but it took me a bit of time and experimentation to figure out what form that would continued on page 22

take. When I made my first photographs and my first prints, I think knew immediately that I found the right material for me. I can also say that learning photographic processes has always been pretty easy for me(with just some brief classroom introductions, I consider myself to be self-taught); right away the process just felt natural.

IT: What was the editing process for the book like, and did it change shape and form considerably throughout the construction?

BA: I was expecting the editing process to be a bit more grueling than it was. After our first meetings and signing

a contract with my editor, he gave me a great deal of freedom. Once I’d finished a chapter or two, I applied the same basic structure to each of them. Finding the right pictures took a bit of research, but mostly I feel that once I got into the project took on a momentum of its own. In finding pictures, I also had the great pleasure of meeting some great photographers, many of whom influenced my own interests in the medium.

IT: What’s new on the horizon for you, and are there any new books around the corner, any new exhibits?

BA: Thus far, 2017 has been a big year for me. I started the year with a month long residency at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire, and came back to release two books simultaneously (this

book with OUP, and then a book I wrote about contemporary Javanese photography), but of which I put together at the same time. And then I launched the exhibition Identity Crisis at the museum.

The past four of five years, I’ve been doing a photographic project about Denver, CO, my hometown. I am in the process of putting together a working draft of that for my next book, and hope to see that out soon too. A Bold Creative Partnership Whitehorse is a family affair

anadian folk rockers Whitehorse’s newest music video, “Boys Like You” is a deeply intimate portrait.

The band, which consists of the husband and wife duo, Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland, is a striking force. The connection between the two musicians is remarkable, and “Boys Like You” — which is off the group’s upcoming album, Dollhouse — plays well with that unique bond.

“We often think of it as getting away with murder,” Doucet laughed. “We play three inches from each other on stage in front of people, and there’s this awkward intimacy there. I think for some people it’s like they’re waiting for us to have sex.”

The symbiosis the two share onstage is an intense expression. Their creative and workman-like absolution, is a thing of patience and courage.

“I mean we live together, tour together, are basically in each other’s faces 24/7,” Doucet said. “It’s quite the mental experiment. But we’re still friends after all of it,

and that’s really the most incredible and special thing.”

Whitehorse began as a stripped down alt-country and folk project, with the sensuality of a Bob Dylan and Joan Baez pairing, but quickly developed into something much wider. Throughout four full-lengths and two EPs, the group’s culled from a vast spectrum of sound, experimented with looping, toured with a full band and played some down-right gritty and lean rock ’n’ roll. 2016’s The Northern South Vol. 1 was a killer reimagining of six blues classics: a record with some ridiculous gravity.

“It was definitely an homage to the old blues and rock ’n’ roll sound,” Doucet noted. “We’re talking about a starting palette that is pre-Beatles. But with the loops interwoven in there, it’s certainly postBeatles. So the whole project was really interesting in that way. Sort of a middle path.”

Both Doucet and McClelland are multi-instrumentalists and really get after it in terms of extended vision. As well as being amazing vocalists, Doucet is a shred guitarist, drummer and keyboardist, and

McClelland plays the P-Bass like it’s an extension of her inner-soul. Together the two offer a drifting and perpetual musical journey. The band’s upcoming record is a step beyond, taking looping and structural imagining to a new level.

“Working with the hip-hip beat makers Likeminds was an amazing experience,” Doucet said. “We’ve been working with loops a lot over the years, and this was really the logical place to go. They have this massive library in their Brooklyn studio, and we really just let loose. Dollhouse was an amazing record to create.”

Being parents also influenced the new album, as well as digging on some ’90s artists and some hip-hop.

“Our 2-and-half year-old son was watching a lot of Beatles videos the past year,” Doucet said. “So that whole Beatles vibe was circulating through our heads.

early Portishead and Beck, and also a lot of hip-hop. ‘Run The Jewels’ was cranking in the van nonstop.”

Whitehorse is a grand experience. A place where the dusty history of rock and country melts seamlessly with contemporary technology: pulsing, reverberating and expanding. Together, Doucet and McClelland are one: a blinding direction. The two will visit The Dock on Thursday in their original stripped-down form: two singersongwriters with guitars and nothing else.

“The live experience has really evolved over the years and taken on a life of its own,” Doucet noted. “In a lot of ways it’s gotten to big for me. So this tour will be really special. We’ll be revisiting our roots.” •

painted into the flowers a bit. (And she pointed out to me how one of the woman’s nipples was subtly painted as a flower.) And she told me how she was influenced by Matisse…his paintings of nudes with floral backgrounds.

The owner of the Eye Gallery, Julie Simmons-Lynch, suggested that it reminded her of Norman Rockwell’s

ing of a near-nude male figure seated on a tall stool. It is another striking, realistic painting. Again, I think of Sargent or Whistler…perhaps because it isn’t 20th century hyper-realism like, say, Chuck Close, but rather has a 19th century, slightly romantic feel.

And Erin has some excellent charcoal drawings, too: Orbit…Anchor…In Strong Arms…Dream Ballet. These are drawings of families…a mother, a father, a baby… and have more of a post-Picasso expres-

sionist feel. The figures are a bit more sculptural…and, once again, Deneuville has left in the construction lines…sweeping, curved lines that give the works a kind of musical quality.

Straight Outta the Renaissance Erin Deneuville at the Eye Gallery

nother marvelous show at the Eye Gallery on the Ithaca Commons.

(And, again, I feel inadequate to convey it in words to the Art-Loving Reader, but here we go…)

The show is composed of a group of large oil paintings (and some smaller charcoal drawings) by the Ithaca-based artist Erin Deneuville.

The paintings are realistic. With a slight 19th century feel. I think of John Singer Sargent (1856 – 1925). Or perhaps James McNeill Whistler (1834 – 1903).

Deneuville’s work has a feel like a Renaissance master. As if Western Art ran in a straight line from the Renaissance (painters like Raphael and Titian and Leonardo and so on) to the 21st century. (Without Picasso and Braque inventing Cubism in the early 20th century and ushering in what we popularly call “Modern Art”.) Deneuville’s art feels like it exists in some parallel universe where Picasso and “Modern Art” never happened and Western Art came straight through from the Renaissance.

My favorites in the show include The Weight (Becoming a Parent). This is a big tall self-portrait…featuring Erin (newly pregnant) lost in an oversized suit. (One of her Dad’s suits…and he’s a pretty big guy – I met him at the gallery.)

It’s a striking, realistic work. (Although Erin’s eyes are over-large, almost

cartooned, and she has a sort of wry, bemused look on her face.) And the suit is so large, and the background is so stark, that the painting has a slight surrealistic feel like a Magritte.

I also admired Sober Figure (After

Matisse). This is a reclining nude figure of a woman. (I met Erin at the show, and she explained how she mounted a decorative floral pattern on a canvas and then painted the figure on top of it.) She also

work. I think I know what she’s talking about. I have a big coffee table book of Rockwell’s work that used to be my Dad’s…and the painting does remind me of Rockwell’s personal works…not his Saturday Evening Post covers…but rather his private paintings…and the studies from his figure drawing classes.

The interesting thing is Deneuville left in a trace of the construction lines… the geometric underpinnings of the painting…that gives it a more modern, post-Picasso look.

The New Place in Town

Monks is an experience both for lunch and dinner

ach time I have a meal at Monks on the Commons in the new Marriott Hotel, I wonder: Is this a restaurant that serves drinks or is it a bar that serves food? And with each visit I conclude that it is really both. The restaurant shares a large open ground floor area with the hotel registration desk, the bar, and the lounge. It’s replete with couches, comfy upholstered chairs, and small tables more suitable for supporting cocktail glasses than dinner plates.

The area is quite attractive…not garish, no signs of opulence… just basic understated chairs and tables that add a feeling of functionality. The most distinctive and appealing features are the extra large picture windows offering a view of the Commons and the east end of State Street. During daylight hours, the restaurant has a particularly open and cheery ambiance.

Comparing the restaurant’s lunch and dinner menus with the beverage offerings confirms the bar-serving-food idea.

The wine, beer, and cocktail menus are inclusive and extensive, covering eleven pages and offering a wide variety of beer on tap and in bottles, wines from around the world as well as a creative variety of crafted and basic mixed drinks, all at reasonable prices.

Lunch and dinner food offerings, on the other hand, are rather sparse, all appearing on one side of one piece of paper. And there’s not much variety

between lunch and dinner – in fact the menus are almost identical. The dinner menu drops the four sandwiches from the lunch menu and adds a cheese plate and a just few more entrée choices. There seems to be quite an emphasis on red meat. Four of the five “Plates” are red meat with one fish selection.

For lunch I’ve enjoyed the Short Rib Grilled Cheese sandwich - sliced beef short rib combined with goat cheese from a local farm and an onion jam, and served on multigrain bread ($14).

I did not, on the other hand, like the Buttermilk Fried Chicken sandwich.

It was virtually impossible to eat as a sandwich as the chicken parts came in all kinds of convoluted three dimensional shapes, requiring a knife and fork. The excessive breading on the chicken was cooked too long and blackened. The “brioche roll” struck me as a basic white flour hamburger bun and the “crunchy slaw” was a layer of cole slaw spread thinly on the bun. Among the small plates, the Roasted Tomato & Pepper Soup was tasty but more the consistency of a dip, rather than a soup, with two “mini grilled gruyere sandwiches” on the saucer. The word “mini” was overstated – these weren’t even bite sized.

One early evening I ordered a “special” appetizer of charred broccoli and cauliflower with pickled onions. It was exactly the same dish as was listed on the menu but the reason it was “special” was

it was reduced from $7 to $5 until 6:30.

The char was almost unnoticeable and the veggies were raw. No problem with that (basically a plate of a limited selection of crudités) however I would have appreciated a sharper knife to cut through the stems or better yet, had the stems trimmed off in the kitchen. My entrée was a real winner: “Perfect Roast Chicken.”

Though a bit audacious to call themselves perfect, the half chicken really was cooked to perfection – tender and juicy. The accompanying collard greens – stewed with ham hocks – were the best offering of collards I’ve ever had. I’ve also enjoyed the vegetable burger – both at lunch and dinner. It’s made with white beans and red onions and isn’t dried out as many are.

I very much like that even though the lunch and dinner menus are so similar, the many items that appear on both are priced the same at both meals.

Service has been inconsistent.

The servers themselves are cheery and obviously want to be helpful. However,

T

he tale of Cinderella has endured across cultures, in hundreds of variations, for two millennia. Maybe because the idea of virtue rewarded –– not to mention magical self-transformation from rags to riches –– is a story we always need. And it’s a fantasy young women in particular required, given that without being born into wealth, their only hope for a future was to win a husband by being beautiful, clever, or good.

Girls today have decidedly more options, but the story’s appeal persists –– with its dysfunctional family and happily-ever-after. Opera Ithaca did the tale justice with the final production of its third season, Gioachino Rossini’s 1817 version –– in two splendid performances last weekend. Also staged, by Ellen Jackson, was a shorter, simplified (sorrow-free) English version just for children –– a smart nod to young audiences, which opera needs.

But even opening night at the Hangar Theatre drew many viewing opera for the first time.

Under Norm Johnson’s able direction, the intimate playing space was well used, with a large cast of 24, including chorus and dance ensemble. Richard Montgomery’s orchestra of five presented Rossini’s lively music most handsomely. Marthe Hoffmann kept the stage design simple, with lacy snowflake patterns on the floor and two backdrops –– the home fireplace,

Kitchen Theatre | 514 W State St | “Mirage”: Paintings by John Lyon Paul. John’s paintings emerge from a kinesthetic awareness also evident in his sculptures. His use of color and line, with their pulse, vibration, and rhythms, invite the viewer to enter and travel them.

Lifelong | 119 W Court St, Ithaca | Life in a Different Art. Susan Stolov began to paint 12 years ago. A professional classical musician for

the prince’s court –– which also served for the (somewhat dim) supertitle projections.

Where the visuals shone was in the array of elegant costumes, right from the Met Opera wardrobe –– lush gowns for Cinderella, comical ones for her stepsisters, sharp black frock coats with long grey vests for the courtiers. Christopher Metzger and Elizabeth Kinney managed this gorgeous array for the large cast, and Dorothy Petersen provided some excellent wigs.

Rossini’s version of the story has no magical effects (he too was on a tight budget), so there’s no grand ball or pumpkin coach. And he chose to make the stepfather the villain, whose threats are so cruel in Jacopo Ferretti’s libretto that he sounds like a Mafia hitman.

To add some backstory (and some visual wonderment), Opera Ithaca included a scene of Cinderella in the cemetery, where her dead mother’s pale figure hovers. Around her, statues on pedestals stand most strikingly suspended –– then come to life as lovely young women in dance.

Additional music was also inserted, serving a charming ballet among four couples –– most effectively choreographed by Tucker Davis.

Buoyed by Rossini’s sparkling music, the story unfolds apace with the strong vocals and equally skilled acting of this impressive cast. Lynn Craver and Dana Kinney are hysterical as the brawling stepsisters; and as their father, Don Magnifico, Adelmo Guidarelli is superb – bald and round, imperious and severe yet toadying and

most of her life, this is the first public exhibition of her visual art. Working in watercolor and acrylic, Susan has captured images of family life, her beloved cats, and still life scenes. In the future, she plans to venture into oils and (perhaps) contemporary themes.

The exhibit will be up through May and June.

out of the charade. (On opening night, his vocals were somewhat muddy in the first act but cleared up in the second.)

He’s coached by the handsome and smitten Prince Ramiro, whom Brandon Snook delivers with fine character and robust singing. As Cinderella’s mother, Paige Anderson is a silent wraith, while Marc Webster has much presence as an advisor to the prince.

(Because of their resemblance, I at first mistook him for the king, who’s not in this version.)

Tall and imposing, Webster also appears as Alidoro (originally the prince’s tutor) to help Cinderella with her makeover. He’s in drag –– sparkly tulle dress and glittery gold cape –– giving extra meaning to the term “fairy godmother,” a tired joke I could have lived without. Using male drag as an intrinsically comic device disserves both men and women; witness the recently screened British National Theatre production of Twelfth Night for a more dignified choice.

The opera’s most wonderful scenes (both in song and action) were cacophonous mayhem, when all parties are arguing wildly. Amidst this classic human comedy, our heroine, direct and simple, functions as a moral touchstone. In any smock, Caitlin Mathes’ winsome Cinderella lit up the stage with her sensitive acting and dazzling mezzosoprano. Hers was the centerpiece performance of a thoroughly delightful production. Opera Ithaca has outdone itself again and promises even more for its next season. •
