h i s ye a r’s Tompk i n s C ou nt y A re a D e velopment annual report painted a fairly rosy picture of the progress the region has made in the last year, as well as the near-term intentions and goals TCAD envisions as the best path for a healthy, beneficial future.

The presentation, held last week before a packed banquet room at Coltivare dotted with local figures of distinction, included an update on the Transform Tompkins Campaign, which appears to be outpacing expectations. The five-year initiative, started three years ago, claims the creation of $35 million in new payroll (of a desired $45 million) and 555 new jobs across the county, with a five year goal of 750. The new capital investment goal of $450 million has already been surpassed, with $523 million invested so far.

TCAD President Michael Stamm highlighted recent projects that have either opened, are under construction or have been approved to start construction: the Marriott Hotel, the Carey Building, Simeon’s restaurant, City Centre, Harold’s Square, the Hilton Canopy hotel, the Breazzano Family Center for Business Education, among others. All serve to help strengthen or expand the area’s tax base, particularly within the city of Ithaca.

In the works for quite some time now, the city’s Planning and Economic Development Committee – which is tasked with reviewing and refining changes to the city code – will begin the process of working on an amendment to the city code that will require all new construction projects to thoroughly consider the manner and environment in which its trees are planted.

She will be stepping into the shoes of TC3’s longtime president, Carl Haynes, who will be retiring after decades of service at the helm of the area’s community college.

The Ithaca Times caught up with Orinthia last week and asked her some questions.

Ithaca Times: The big thing the college has had to focus on lately is the changing needs of the workforce, of how people see community colleges. From all the programs Tompkins Cortland Community College has put in place, what have you seen so far that the college has done that signifies a step in the right direction and how do you see yourself taking that forward?

Orinthia Montague: T he CollegeNow program is one of the programs I think the college has done really well with. Taking that forward, I think, involves taking a look at students who have gone through CollegeNow – who have perhaps earned the credits that way – and encouraging them to continue on the path of degree completion. So, even

though it’s kind of an early college experience, the question is ‘do we make our mark with having them come back and continue?’ Maybe they only took 30 credits in high school: how do we get them to that other 30, 34 to finish that twoyear degree?

When it comes to enrollment, I think it’s about figuring out what we have that is the driver people want. The FarmTo-Bistro, I think, is a wonderful program w it h a lot of opportunity. I actually met a student from Tompkins Cortland Community College last night while checking into my hotel, a nd he plans on going

into the culinary school at Cornell. Again, having pathways for degree completion so folks can see the alignment there is very important, and I think finding new ways of engaging different student populations – underrepresented students, either in our feeder demographic here or reaching out a bit further, into New York City – and figuring out ways continued on page 12

ommon Council heard the results of a study of Ithaca High School students about their experiences with the Ithaca Police Department. There was an all-time high in responses this year, with 712 students returning their answers and a fairly representative sample size of most demographics.

IHS senior Gillian Turvey presented the results to the Council on behalf of the Ithaca Youth Council. Before breaking the results down along certain lines, the numbers look

generally good: 63.6 percent of respondents agree or strongly agree that “IPD is doing the best job they can to make Ithaca a safe place to live,” though with nearly 30 percent saying they were unsure.

Regarding the November 2015 installment of body cameras for police officers prior to any law enforcement operation, 67.6 percent said they t h i n k t h is wou ld i mprove community relations. Again, without breaking it down into any specific demographics, 43.5 percent said they were

unsure if there ethnicity played a role in their interactions with Ithaca police officers, with 28.6 percent disagreeing and 27.8 agreeing.

When broken down along racial lines, the numbers are not necessarily staggering, though there are some points of concern. About 30 percent of African American students said they don’t feel safe when they see an IPD officer and are not committing a crime, compared to under 10 percent continued on page 14

processing development. Energy, he said, faces challenges from the natural gas moratorium as well as general public opposition to energy plants, even t hose which produce green energy, encroaching too close on housing and possibly affecting property values. As for food processing, Stamm sa id sma l l compa nies t hat may have started at the Ithaca Farmers’ Market, for instance, have begun to expand around to other parts of the Northeast, w it h Ma rga ret A r mst rong of TCAD working to receive funding from the United States Department of Agriculture for further food sector work.

A f ter t he pre sent at ion, Stamm said he was most optimistic about the efforts that had been made during t he previous year to foster a better relationship between the area’s workforce and the type of development that is advancing here. the wishes of the city’s Arboricultural Master Plan – often include trees in their building plans. The problems she faces of ten come with the insufficient plans in place for their sustained grow t h once t he construction crews clear out, whether that is good soils or provisions for proper maintenance.

Though under current site plan standards a developer is required to maintain the trees they bring in, there’s actually no real requirement to properly take care of them: if anything, they could just plant a new tree in its place if something goes wrong. In a letter to the PEDC last week, Grace outlined some of the shortcomings of the site plan review process as it currently stands, calling the amendments to the city code a “vital first step to showing developers the value the Ithaca puts on ensuring the Urban Forest,” adding the offsetting of the increased urbanization of downtown with a screen of green is “a successful and essential part to our urban infrastructure and development.”

“Too of ten we have seen new landscape installed without proper tree species select ion, t ree plac ement , t ree quality, tree protection, soil conditions, planting space allotment and planting practices,” the letter reads. “As plantings are required to grow in perpetuity on newly developed sites after the site plan review decisions are made, the failure of these elements of our City’s infrastructure amounts to a waste of funds and resources.”

A s s u m i n g t h e c h a n ge s go through, the demands of developers to t hin k of t he trees could begin to have some teeth in ways they hadn’t had to before.

“You’ll have to put in your tree protection plan according to these standards… it’s no longer going to be simply circling a tree on the site plan and saying, ‘this tree is going to be protected.’ All that means right now is not cutting it down,” said Grace. “It takes a lot more than that to protect a tree, to allow it to survive.”

Of course, all those benefits only come through making trees a priority – caring for them and sustaining them – to unleash their full potential: after all, a sad stalk poking t hrough t he sidewa lk does little for shade.

“It’s really important when you see how much development is going on downtown and in collegetown, these huge buildings rising out of these neighborhoods,” Grace said.

“With all this concrete around it, it’s not going to be an inviting place to walk or go shopping or anything like that.”

Because t he building doesn’t seem to be slowing down for a while, this is somet hing to keep in mind and soon, much like the Lora x, Grace hopes folks in City Hall will begin to spea k for the trees: largely, so she doesn’t have to.

“Trees need ox ygen and soil,” jokes Grace. “It’s true!”

Development of the workforce has been a long-term goal of the county, which commissioned a study in the late 2000s that identified six goals the county should pursue: increasing the number of basic-skill workers, retaining and attracting more young professionals, ready itself for baby-boomer retirements, increase access to specialized occupations, reduce underemployment and increase the workforce system’s capacity to manage short-term challenges.

Stamm said there’s finally some traction being gained on the workforce development front, with TCAD devoting significant resources to the issue that, he said, is affecting communities around the country. In terms of the region’s wel l-doc u mented hou si ng problems, Stamm said those can hinder the workforce as well, by blocking quality job hunters from making the move to Ithaca.

“The housing problem is significant at the other end of the spectrum,” he said. “High end engineers and managers that want to come here and work aren’t finding the housing stock that interests them, and so that’s a big issue as well.”

Beyond their natural ability to clean the air – meaning healthier lungs and therefore, t he chance at fewer, cost ly medical problems stemming from them – trees in the downtown core can offer an array of effects impacting everything from a building’s energy costs to people’s shopping habits.

According to figures provided by the United States Forest Service, a wealth of trees can retain signif icant amounts of rainwater and cool urbanized areas in t he summertime, helping to cut energ y costs during warm weather.

Financially, trees have been proven time and time again to elevate one’s sense of place and improve their shopping habits: According to a 2006 article by the Arborist News, it has been found visitors to well-treed central business districts will spend 9 to 12 percent more for products, thanks to cool surroundings and the psychological impacts of a less harsh, urban landscape. Reed Needs To Read To Lead Weighty Matters A

s editor of a small newspaper (circulation: 18,125), I’m not going to pretend I understand the finer mechanics of the inside baseball played every day in Washington D.C. I’m no politico, no policy wonk: you could say, not being at the center of it all, that I’m largely ignorant of, if not completely blind to, the complexity of the whole that makes our government – and the forces that control it – so convoluted and difficult to understand.

But, for the purpose of rationalizing why the Southern Tier’s congressman, Tom Reed, voted for a healthcare bill that numerous colleagues of his confessed to not even reading, we will – just for the sake of honest experimentation – try and put ourselves in a state of mind that would have led Mr. Reed to conclude that voting for such legislation would be in the best interests of his approximately 710,000 constituents.

On Monday, Reed stated that there was “plenty of misinformation” about the American Health Care Act in recent days, providing a link to a fact sheet promoting the bill as a pathway to “increase choice, reduce cost,” and “provide flexibility.” In that fact sheet, there are a number of truths. The contents included, for example, facts like...

Congress, for reasons too lengthy to explain in this small space, will be governed by the provisions of the AHCA. Consumers will be able to choose

whether or not they even want insurance, not subject to the mandate of the federal government.

There will be increased competition bet ween insura nce companies, in theory trying to lure consu mers t h rou g h lowered r ate s .

There’s some goodies in there for each state too, likely provisions which – over the course of a few days – helped tip Reed from on-the-fence about the bill to a ‘yay’ vote: a provision to cut the property tax burden for New Yorkers where the state has fallen short – much needed. Essential consumer protections – much needed. Allowing children to stay on their parent’s insurance plans until the age of 26 – again, where wages are stagnant and job opportunities for the lowest-positioned youth few and far in between, much needed.

A lot has been written about these “facts” in the fallout of this bill’s passage through the House. A lot has also been written on the reality that, simply put, a lot of it doesn’t make sense: severe cuts in Medicaid are anticipated.

The math behind the claim “everybody will be covered” doesn’t seem to add up. A $5 billion hole facing the State of New York’s health care system (coming by way of the dismantling of the state’s Medicaid and Essential Plan) if this bill is signed into law.

thaca has at least as many gyms and yoga studios as pizza parlors, which is a good thing for weight and cholesterol levels among our populace.

Pizza is not inherently unhealthy, but don’t kid yourself, it isn’t broccoli. People tend to like a nice big slice for their $2.75, which means caloric surplus.

Fancy restaurants can get away with making healthy neo-pizza flatbreads with elegant, sparse ingredients (crumbled goat cheese, pears), but street joints operate with standards of heft, not finesse.

A few we ek s a go a ne w plac e opened downtown. There are already three ver y good ones where I am known well enough to get large hellos upon entering.

A fourth place is a problem, particularly this one, a branch of an exurban enterprise that for twenty years has provided the most bona fide New York City-style pizza northwest of the Catskill reservoirs, but is ten miles from Ithaca, so I have only visited once or twice a year, although when I do, I bring home an extralarge pie, and maybe an extra. The new place would be two blocks from where I work.

The rumor of its arrival hit in January and I wasted no time. I walked to the gym six block from my house

and joined up.

It was like enlisting in the Marines, something you do only for a compelling psychic need.

Mine was to avoid weighing forty pounds more this time next year.

I figured, just loosely, that if I visit the gym as often as I do pizzerias, this might be possible.

Maybe not everyone needs focus like this, but many must, or there wouldn’t be magazines like Men’s Health, with cover stories like “Get Fit! Your Complete Four-Week Plan,” “Anarchy Abs!,” and “How Swearing Helps You Lift More.”

It’s funny, because you see such magazines at supermarket checkouts where people are rolling through with $200 worth of food, including not-such-good food, which of course is the hushed lifeblood of the industry.

he Ithaca Fringe Festival of performing arts wrapped up Sunday, April 23. We extend a huge “Thank You!” to the businesses, agencies and individuals who made our fourth year a success. We couldn’t possibly do it without many donations of space, food, music, time and effort from people in our great region.

Our kickoff party on Thursday, April 19 featured delightful music by John Bunge, delicious food provided

by Manndible Café, and sneak previews of the eight productions.

These companies then offered 24 performances over the next three days. At Fringe Central (the Visitors Center on the Commons, donated by the Community Arts Partnership, Downtown Ithaca Alliance and Tompkins County Convention and Visitors Bureau) we were entertained

week, no junk food, and no eating between meals, except healthy things like produce.

They said a major part of the support was that if one of them goes off the diet, she has to disclose it, and then the other gets to go off for the same amount, or thereabouts, and then they start over.

I had to think about it, but I felt right away something was wrong with this strategy. I quickly figured out what.

“That’s no good,” I said. “The rule should be that if one goes off, you have to tell, but the other doesn’t get to do the same. The other gets denied that amount of food or calories.

“A., say you have a forbidden second dessert this week. You have to report it, but the consequence isn’t that B. gets to have two. B. gets none.

You ate hers.

“Or, B., if you eat Doritos or donuts in the afternoon at work, A. gets walnuts for dinner and has to run five miles. Something like that.”

All production venues were donated. Cinemapolis and the Community School of Music and Arts have generously given space all four years of the Ithaca Fringe, and the History Center hosted a show for the second year. We were thrilled to add Circus Culture and Lifelong as venue hosts this year.

Nearly 50 volunteers made the festival run smoothly. We could never manage without them, or without the local folks who welcomed our visiting artists into their homes for the week.

All ticket sales go to the performers, so we rely on these donations. For partial operating revenue we’re grateful for a Tompkins County Tourism Grant and the festival sponsorship of Tompkins Trust Company. We also applaud the merchants, restaurants and service providers who bought program ads, and the businesses and organizations that offered discounts to festival-goers or donated raffle prizes.

We especially thank our audience members who joined the Fringe community from near and far (Chautauqua, Philadelphia, NYC, Toronto,

he only way to defeat injustice is to stand together. It is shameful that Ithaca College has chosen to deal so maliciously with its dedicated faculty; I know students of all three of the fired faculty members, and they applaud these teachers. I hope current students, their parents, and faculty are aware of how dire the situation is. I am glad to see the stillemployed “contingent” faculty members standing with their colleagues until there is a just resolution.

zling: according to the governor’s office, New York’s uninsured rate has been cut in half – down to 5 percent – since the ratification of the Affordable Care Act eight years ago.

This bill, as it stands, is not a bill for New Yorkers.

But, being a very smart individual, one with the insider knowledge and perspective this small town newspaper editor lacks, it’s doubtless Reed has acknowledged this reality. So we’ll spare the speculation of replacing “this plan versus that plan” and put ourselves squarely in the realm of what will definitely happen, given the thorough proceedings of our multi-tier system of government: many in the senate have portrayed this rough hewn bill – which nobody read – as “dead on arrival.”

They may send it back to the House unvetted.

It will undergo changes. It will go back to the Senate. It may get some edits. Then, it will go back to the House. Maybe, one day, the Republicans will get a bill – with all the free market wonderment in the world – that everyone can agree with. Maybe by then, the average wage and income equality will revert back to the glory days, when an insurance marketplace was actually an option that was affordable for everyone, a safety net unneeded for general care. Maybe they will figure out a means of distributing refundable tax credits on health care plans equitably between rich and poor – something the non-partisan Kaiser Foundation pointed out was notably missing from the AHCA. As it stands right now, this little detail absolutely screws residents of Tompkins County: According to their estimate, by 2020 residents of Tompkins will receive, on average, $1,850 less in tax credit reimbursement on a $7,730 premium than they would have under the ACA. There’s plenty of time to work this out and, at the end of the day, it didn’t matter whether or not anyone in Congress read the bill or were even comfortable with what was on it. All that mattered was getting the discussion started to repeal – and replace – a troubled healthcare system. A fix to a system of shrinking marketplaces is very much needed, we can all agree on that and, as many will acknowledge, it’s easier to pass legislation than to undo it. There’s no doubt Reed is of the camp that acknowledges this and, from his standpoint, is doing the right thing. From inside the House, there is a strong push to get the conversation going and – unlike many who believe otherwise – work toward a nuanced bill of their own construction. This could have been done beforehand: as the Congressman to our north, John Katko, said in his disapproval of the bill; it had too many holes in it, was not complete legislation and it needed much more work before it was ready for a vote. Katko took leadership, by saying Republicans should respect the process, waiting until the party could produce a bill that was actually realistic: a finished sculpture, not a block of marble and a chisel.

All intentions aside – whether Reed’s vote for this bill was done strategically or with the understanding things might, one day, “work out” – this ‘yay’ vote is no more than a vote for continued disfunction. And from outside the batter’s box of Capitol Hill’s inside baseball, all we can see is that our Congressman voted for a bill nobody bothered to read.

The first of which added post-traumatic stress disorder to the list of conditions that could be treated with medical marijuana. Another bill allowed for plaintiffs to collected coverage of attorney costs after judicially appealing a state Freedom of Information Law request.

Tom O’Mara NY State Senate State Senator O’Mara voted in favor of a senate bill that would allow state legislators and other publically elec ted of f icially to be formally recalled if a petition is signed by 15 percent of voters in each electoral district. Supporters justified the legislation saying it is an important step forward in addressing fraud and corruption in Albany.

Tom Reed U.S. Congress The house passed two major pieces of legislation, both with Congressman Reed’s approval. The first of which was a spending bill to allocate funding to the federal government through October of 2017. Reed had been vocal in favor of passing a bipartisan “clean” spending plan to keep the government open and avoid a shutdown.

The second, was the razor thin house approval for the American Healthcare Act which rolls back a number of provisions from the Affordable Care Act. “The AHCA upholds protections for pre-existing conditions and the expansion of Medicaid, which help our most vulnerable populations,” Reed said in a public statement on the bill. Opponents of the AHCA say otherwise that the bill could threaten individuals with pre-existing conditions. The bill will now go to a 12-person working group of GOP senators who will likely transform the bill a lot before it even hits the senate floor.

Reed has been a popular figure on the national media circuit with airtime on NPR, ABC, NBC, CNBC and MSNBC last week for commentary on the AHCA and spending bill as well as his town hall events last weekend in the western reaches of the 23rd district.

Kirsten Gillibrand & Chuck Schumer – U.S. Senate Senator Gillibrand has been a vocal opponent of the AHCA and showed so with a string of retweets from patients describing their pre-existing conditions on the night the vote was passed.

“Obamacare isn’t perfect. Health insurance is still too costly for most Americans, and Congress should fix that,” Gillibrand said in a statement last week. “I believe we should fight for that public option – but until then, I will work as hard as I can to defeat this misguided and purely political effort that will hurt New York families.”

Senator Schumer held a press conference at his office in New York City over the weekend to publicly condemn the White House’s plan to cut the Office of National Drug Control Policy in 2018. The center currently receives $388 million in funding, but the 2018 plan would place it at $24 million.

Continuum The Candidates

hree people will appear on the upcoming ballot for the Ithaca City School Board elections, taking place next Tuesday, May 16. Accompanying that vote will be the public’s chance to approve the proposed district budget for the 2017-2018 school year.

Incumbent members Sean Eversley Bradwell, Patricia Wasyliw and Christopher Malcolm will learn their fates on election day, all of whom are vying for reelection to the board. The full board consists of nine members, terms lasting three

years and elections staggered. Three of the nine member board see their terms expire each year, with a chance for reelection.

Often, ICSD board elections draw at least a few more candidates than spots, but this year comes as a rather quiet election, given it is just one year after a tumultuous period for the district, in which it grappled with a lead problem in the drinking water.

Each candidate said they were proud of the work that had been done during their last three years on the board, but acknowledged there were still challenges and had a relatively united view of what specifically those challenges are.

Wasyliw comes from a long background in education oversight, having spent time on Parent-Teacher Associations at South Hill Elementary School, Boynton Middle

School, and ICSD itself. She has already served two terms on the board, winning her first term in 2011.

Wasyliw said she brings a knowledge of the world beyond high school, her perspective coming through her job in the Admissions and Academic Advisement Office in the College of Liberal Arts at Cornell University. Prior to that, she worked as a history professor at the university. This, she said, can help with her work with the board: one of the main goals, if not the single most important duty, of any education system is to prepare students for what is ahead, which Wasyliw says she is intimately familiar with.

“I see every day the results of high school education,” she said. “Are students ready for college? What are the academic personal cultural challenges that they face? How are they prepared for this next

step? What are colleges looking for in our students? That’s a perspective I bring.”

Wasyliw has been working on a project with other members of the board to conduct a systematic review, and update where necessary, of the school district’s long list of policies and procedures. Some of the district’s first internet guidelines, she said, were written in the 1990s and will probably need to be adjusted to adapt to the mammoth impact it has on learning and information today.

“It just doesn’t ref lect the reality of multiple handheld devices and kids being able to access information through their phones every day,” she said, noting when one of her daughters was in school just a few years ago, there was a full prohibition on phone usage that has been changed.

“There are ways teachers can coordinate those into positive group learning.”

The Budget

f there’s any one takeaway from this year’s Ithaca City School Budget, it should be this: the tough times seem to be well behind us.

When voters head to the polls on May 16, taxpayers within the Ithaca City School District will be voting on a budget that includes the second straight tax rate decrease, an increase in services and – for many – the first overall decrease in their school taxes in years. Within the nearly $124.7 million budget, all signs of the district’s financial well-being – from an increase in teacher salaries to expansions of pre-kindergarten and a bolstering of the district’s fund balance – are evident, this year’s fiscal picture largely boosted by last year’s $15 million rise in assessed value across the city. And, with 2017 anticipated to bring a negligible increase to the average homeowner’s assessment, the district’s tax rate reduction of 1.1 percent should – unlike last year’s decrease of 0.35 percent – outpace any f luctuations in property values.

In short: in this year’s budget, the district is adding programming and building up its savings at little to no additional cost to the taxpayer.

“This is big, because it allows us to go all the way up to that tax cap amount with confidence to the voters, to be able to say we’re not putting too much of a burden on our taxpayer base,” said Amanda Verba, the district’s Chief Operating Officer.

In smaller communities, school districts tend to rely on state aid in order to meet the requirements outlined in their budget.

For ICSD, whose state aid contribution is not huge compared to its overall operatTh e

ing income – most of its revenue comes direct from the taxpayers. Where increases in spending – like the district is implementing this year – are often reflected in the demand on taxpayers, the budget this year is still within the tax cap. Even though the tax levy has increased 2.16 percent, a massive increase in property taxes from new development (plus a relatively quiet year in the assessment office) means not only did the tax rate drop from last year, but most people’s school taxes likely dropped as well.

Just two years after being named as a district “susceptible to fiscal stress” by the New York State Comptroller’s Office, a massive influx of new development, purposeful operational spending and conservative use of the district’s fund balance have helped to right the ship, making the school district’s reliance on the taxpayer diminished in comparison to recent years.

Revenues from state aid are anticipated to increase slightly, at $731,000 over last year’s $29.4 million take. This is a relatively negligible increase given this year’s $85.7 million in income from school district taxes – a 2.16 percent increase from last year. For the average homeowner (assuming one’s assessment didn’t go up which, this year, is very likely), the overall 1.1 percent drop in the tax rate (a decrease made possible, once again, to a combination of new development and careful spending) equates to a decrease of $13.65 per $100,000 in assessed value. While an average assessment for the entire school district has yet to be produced, in the City of Ithaca – which saw its average home value change from $205,000 to $208,000 from last year – the median tax increase, assuming you’d get one at all, is approximately 41 cents.

This is of course, only if your property was one of the 5,500 or so properties county-wide which saw a change in its assessment. According to County Assessor Jay Franklin, a majority of properties in the city seeing any significant increase in their assessment were either on the lakeshore or on East Hill.

across the district can expect a pay raise this coming year.

After a year of contract renegotiations, the 2017 budget’s $5.6 million increase – a 4.7 percent rise from last year – is largely tied to approximately $4 million in salary increases district-wide. Within this increase in salary comes an additional $1.6 million for some expanded programs, including new professional development opportunities, increases in BOCES spending, the replacement of a pre-k classroom eliminated several years ago due to budget constraints, the hiring of additional elementary school staff to limit class sizes for an expanding youth population and the increasing availability of programming for non-native English speakers entering the district. Included in the expenditures picture is also a continuation of the district’s increased support for athletics, which last year added several teams to its slate of athletic offerings including JV hockey and alpine skiing.

The district has managed to find ways to save money as well. More than $131,000 in savings have been produced, in part, by the district’s recently-implemented energy efficiency measures and – because of its relative fiscal health of the past few years – less of a reliance on its savings: in past years, like in many districts across the state, ICSD once depended on money from its fund balance to help make ends meet. For reference, in 2010-2011, use of the fund balance represented more than 22 percent of the district’s total expenditures: this year, it is estimated to be some-

where around 14 percent, or $16 million, allowing the district to contribute approximately $2 million to its rainy day fund this past year.

“In Ithaca, we’ve really tried to preserve our programs over time,” Verba said.

“So it’s gotten to the point where we – the board and the community – have said ‘hey, we need to start building this up so, when the next storm comes, we’re not unprepared.’ We don’t want to be in a position to cut back: we have great programs and small class sizes. We want to maintain that.”

This represents a positive for the district down the road: with an anticipated capital project coming up, which will likely require the district to take on a bond in three to five years, ICSD is aiming to put itself in good financial standing to pay that money back at as low a rate as possible. A good fund balance helps with this, helping to alleviate concerns of financial stress from lenders.

Replenishing this balance, Verba said, has come from several years of “purposeful spending” being introduced as a cultural practice within the district.

“They [staff] have been really thoughtful about what they’re buying and why,” Verba said. “They know we had some really tough times there, and know we have to be really careful about our spending because we were using fund balance to support our operations. It’s sort of become a new norm: we’ve really been careful about how we spend.” •

hope readers (and the Valesente family) will forgive me for saying the Wells College vs. Ithaca College game was on Wednesday when it was actually a day later. I showed up on Wednesday, and the fact that there were not throngs of misinformed fans led me to believe that people were smart enough to go to the Bomber website for the correct schedule. Many fans told me in advance that it was nice that a father and son would coach against one another, but that the game would likely result in a Bomber blowout. Hardly…

Ithaca College needed a walk-off single from senior Josh Savacool in the bottom of the ninth inning to take the 9-8 victory.

I hope the guy who finished second in the hammer throw in the Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships can forgive himself, as Cornell’s Rudy Winkler unleashed a throw of 237’ to win the event by more than 10 feet. Rather than lament the fact that he came in second, the runner-up can say that he came within 10 feet of matching a throw by a U.S. Olympian. That’s right, Winkler represented Team USA in Rio last year, after winning the Olympic Trials with a mighty heave of 251’, 10”. Winkler is a two-time FirstTeam All American, and losing to him in the Heps should bring no shame.

The Big Red finished second at the meet, continuing an impressive streak of finishing either first or second in every indoor and outdoor Heps since 2003.

I am sure the Ithaca College softball team can take a lot of pride in taking St. John Fisher to the brink before dropping the Empire 8 championship game by a 2-1 margin. To get to the title game, the Bomber had to beat Fisher’s Lindsey Thayer, one of the most dominant pitchers ever to step into the circle in the Empire 8. Thayer has several perfect games on her resume this year, and in one game, she tied an NCAA record by striking out twentyone batters in a seven inning game.

Ithaca’s Haley Congdon brought her A-game to both games of the deciding double header, shutting out Fisher 2-0 to get to the title game, and giving up but two runs in the finale. Both Thayer and Congdon pitched both ends of the double bill, and both were as sharp as the skies were dull.

The Bombers won the right to host the Empire 8 tournament , but the games were moved to Cornell on Sunday, given the artificial surface was able to handle the incessant rain. I made the trip to watch some of the tournament, and believe me when I tell you that it really did not feel like softball weather, and I found some humor in the fact that the team from Stevens had the word “Ducks” on the front of their uniforms. I bailed well before the championship game, and I tip my

drenched hat to the players and fans who stuck it out until after 7 pm when the final out was recorded.

Both local women’s lacrosse programs missed out on the opportunity to grab their conference’s automatic bids, but the Big Red and the Bombers are both headed to the next round. Ithaca learned they would be among the 40 team Division III field at the NCAA tournament, and will

head to Middletown, Connecticut, for their first game of the tournament, a Second Round matchup a g a i n s t We s leyan University on Sunday, May 14. Ithaca enters the matchup with Wesleyan sporting a 13-4 overall record on the year. The Bombers rolled through the Empire 8 regular season with an 8-0 record, but were eliminated from the Empire 8 Tournament in the semifinals in a 17-10 loss to St. John Fisher on Saturday.

Oftentimes, this means the colleges have traditionally had to draw their students from the area around them. But now, with every SUNY competing for the same students statewide, where else – beyond places like New York City – in the state do you see the college reaching out to?

OM: I’d say anywhere. And that’s not just New York State that I think we have an opportunity. I think we can look internationally and see what kind of alignment we can create. I know Dr. (Carl) Haynes worked with some places in Columbia on that, so I think looking at ways to grow our reach internationally could be big.

One of the things we want our graduates to be are really diverse, global citizens.

The best way to do that is to have this very intentional connection with people from across the globe. What this could also do is afford our students the opportunity to have a study abroad experience.

IT: And that kind of plays into the paradigm of this evolving, global workforce and – as we’ve touched on – the community college’s role in workforce development. So, where do you see the college’s place in that big picture?

OM: I think it’s very important for us and our business partners to ask community members what they want to see programmatic-wise. My father was a welder, and a strong belief in career technical programs immediately leading to employment was always big for me.

To look around and see what the rising industries are and how we can maximize our resources here – either by offering courses, certificates, degree programs – in upcoming programs to stay on the cutting edge. Just trying to connect with businesses and employers in that fashion but also in retooling, looking at individuals who are already employed who may not want to pursue another degree but may need some additional skills in order to do the current job they’re doing a little bit better. Having those types of partnerships, where we’re building up skills and potentially training staff members at a corporation is another way to connect with that workforce.

IT: And with that, the college has a lot of long-held partnerships within the community. You mention from the culinary profession to everything else in place… where do you see the relationships between them and the college moving forward? Are there any other potential areas you may be looking to veer the college toward?

OM: Well, it is my first day…*laughs* IT: Hey, we demand a lot!

OM: To be honest, I have not. What I would want to do is to engage the staff and begin to have that discussion. It’s great to be the leader of a college, yes, but I have to engage others in conversation in an effort to build this collective mindset: “We are the Borg, we will assimilate.”

IT: So how would you go about a campaign like that, as far as connecting with people goes?

OM: Well, I have a great externa l relations staff who are going to get me connected. I want to be engaged with Cha mbers of Com merce, have open times where people can come in but also to walk about myself, get out of my office and engage with everyone… always finding an opportunity to talk to someone is huge. However I can connect with someone wherever I’m at, it’s what I’m supposed to do.

IT: And be visible in the community of course?

OM: Absolutely. Hopefully, there’s a softball league somewhere.

IT: There’s adult kickball too.

OM: I could do that one.

IT: So when we start talking about hand-off now, obviously there’s a pretty established legacy you’re coming into and inheriting. Once again – first day, I know – but looking at what ’s been accomplished and what’s ahead, how do you plan on making your mark?

OM: I absolutely wa nt to use Dr.

Haynes as a resource. Strongly-ingrained in the communit y, supportive, great visionary… he’s done great things for this school. I want to grow what he’s started and build on that. Using him as a resource as well as the other faculty members with long-standing careers here to also give me ideas… people who live within the communities we serve will be valuable.

Just being very open and accessible and taking on everything: nothing is too big for us to dream or achieve. That’s my take going in. Creating for the future.

IT: Now that I’ve got all my hardball out of the way… what do you like best about the area?

OM: It’s beautiful. Truly beautiful here. I was driving down Route 79 on my way into Ithaca and it was just peaceful.

Living in Minneapolis, there’s a lot of urban sprawl. A lot. Seeing all the nature and everything, meeting all the people… everyone’s been so nice.

IT: Just wait until Fall. Is there anything else you want to emphasize before we wrap up here?

OM: I just want to reiterate my excitement and joy at being selected by the board of trustees. I’m going to give it everything I’ve got, plus more.

official declaration of opposition regarding the federal government’s pledge to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the Council voted unanimously to oppose the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017, introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. As the Council describes it, the proposed act would mean all states had to honor concealed carry firearm permits from other states.

“I think it’s important that we show we take these things very seriously, in terms of public safety,” Alderperson Graham Kerslick, who sponsored the resolution, said.

The Council touched upon the biggest story of the day, the arrest of an undocumented Mexican man Tuesday afternoon in Ithaca by the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. Ithaca Police

Department and the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office have both maintained they were not warned or notified of the action within their jurisdictions.

“I feel like we need to do something but I don’t know what that is,” First Ward Alderperson George McGonigal said, who seemed to be struggling with the situation as he spoke. “They can just come in and snatch somebody? And we don’t know when?”

Mayor Svante Myrick said the city had communicated with ICE its anger over the agency’s actions, and said he had been conferring with City Attorney Ari Lavine over courses of action to respond or prevent a similar occurrence in the future.”

Here’s What A Supervised Injection Site Might Look Like When the city government announced the Ithaca Plan early last year, the idea of “supervised injection sites” was launched into the center of a heated local conversation, even making national headlines.

While the exploration of such a system continues, Ithacans were able to get their first glance of what one might look like.

The mock site was part of the Safe Shape Tour, a 10-day excursion around New York state in order to spur on support and spread more knowledge about the sites. It’s targeting cities that have been hit particularly hard by drug problems, either recently or historically: Albany, Poughkeepsie, New York City, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, along with obviously Ithaca.

There’s also the premiere of a documentary called “Caring Communities” Tuesday night at the Hill Center at Ithaca College.

Tompkins County and Ithaca have struggled with heroin overdoses, grimly highlighted by a spree of reported overdoses in early March.

Advocates for the site say it is the most effective way to fight drug overdose deaths, while opponents argue the sites are a

means of enabling harmful drug use.

Organizer Mary Taylor, of drug victim advocacy group Vocal NY, said one of the goals of the tour is to remove the stigma from the sites, to show people the sites might not be as intimidating as they had imagined.

“Generally, the reaction that I’ve seen across the state so far are people who don’t really know what it is,” Taylor said, “the more we talk to them about it, show them it’s about saving lives and making sure people feel valued, the more they’re on-board.”

A group of about 15-20 people gathered around the large, bright green structure, resembling something like a magnified traffic cone, with tours being offered. The site featured three stations, which were essentially successive corners, labeled “Supplies Area,” “Consumption Station” and “Chill Room”.

The Supplies Area contained things like needles, alcohol wipes, small Band-Aids, and other common materials used. The Consumption Station was equipped with safety kits for smoking crack cocaine and

an Overdose Rescue Kit. The Chill Room had places for sitting, along with literature about overcoming addiction and available resources around the community to fight drug dependence.

No drugs are provided at the site.

Kassandra Frederique, the New York State office director for the Drug Policy Alliance and a technical adviser to Mayor Svante Myrick in relation to the Ithaca Plan, said there is a lot of confusion about the sites, but that the discussion is becoming more common around New York, in addition to the country. New York City

has looked into founding a facility, while Seattle and King County in Washington announced earlier this year they will build two safe consumption sites, the country’s first.

“I think a lot of it is about having people understand that it’s not new, or a science experiment,” Frederique said, adding that there are over 100 safe injection facilities in 66 cities around the world. “It’s new to us, but it’s old to everyone else.”

Koreman identifies as a progressive Democrat, describing herself as a “fighter for social justice.” She is challenging Jim Dennis, another Democrat who has held the 5th district’s seat for three terms and announced his re-election campaign last week. Keith Hannon, running as an independent, has also declared his intention to vie for the spot.

The County legislature, Koreman said, needs more diversity and different, fresh perspectives; something she said she can bring as a woman but also an open lesbian from the working class. She advocated a raise in the minimum wage to $15 per hour, and talked about fostering the growth of union jobs in the area, noting their quality and safety.

“I don’t think the average worker is represented in the legislature, the blue collar worker that is trying to make ends meet,” she said. “I grew up in that working class family, my mother and father worked union jobs, I often worked two or three jobs to get by myself.”

Koreman has built her home inspection business herself, one of only two

She has no true political experience per se, but has dealt with issues rooted in politics and even controversial in the area. She has served on the board of the Sierra Club, an environmental advocacy group, as well as on the Black Oak Wind Farm’s board, in which she is an investor. As an activist, she said she has worked on LGBT issues and women’s rights mostly, along with her environmental efforts. Those efforts have also influenced her p ers ona l l i fe ; Kore man’s home and office are equipped with solar panels and a geothermal heating system, running on nearly all green energy for around 10 years now.

At least fundamentally, she is drawing upon her experiences with Black Oak to educate how she intends to maneuver the world of government, if elected. The ongoing project to construct a seven-turbine wind farm in Enfield has been periodically stalled for around 10 years with political and financial challenges, and has created much backlash from Enfield residents.

“What I’ve learned is, you have to listen to people, you have to give them information, you have to get them involved,” she said. “Even though we started Black Oak Wind Farm as a grassroots movement, still some people felt their voices weren’t heard. So for years I’ve been working on people getting their voices heard.”

Koreman is aware of t he crowded field of candidates for most legislature seats this election cycle, a phenomenon she said stemmed from a reaction to President Trump and his agenda. The top priority for the legislature has to be social issues, she argued, where people have gotten too comfortable with the notion that Tompkins County is progressive.

At a time like this, Koreman urged that

complacency or self-satisfaction can not be an option. In her mind, more can and should be done. .

“Those have to be our top priority, they have to be a priority in every single thing that we do,” she said. “There’s a lot of energy right now because people are scared.

They’re scared of what’s happening in Washington, they’re scared of what’s happening to the Earth, and people are coming out. So I think we can harness that energy.”

The Democratic Primary is September 12.

hroughout our lives there are different birthdays that are considered “milestone” years. When a teenager reaches 16 they can drive and “Sweet 16” birthday parties are usually held. Turning 18 means you are legally an adult and can vote.

Reaching age of 21 a person can legally drink alcohol in the United States. Then there’s 30, 40 and 50 before hitting that “Over the Hill” milestone.

Elizabeth Jenner, a resident of Trumansburg, has reached the ripe young age of 100 years old this year. She celebrated her birthday in Florida with family and friends.

Jenner has lived in Trumansburg for over 70 years after growing up in Pompey.

She is one of eight children and is the last remaining sibling. Jenner has three children, nine grandchildren, 16 greatgrandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

Jenner is a member of St. James Catholic Church as well as the Trumansburg Senior Citizens and has many lifelong friends

here.

“She and my grandfather were avid boaters on Cayuga Lake and named their boat after a couple of their granddaughters (namely me), The DeDawn,” said granddaughter Denise Blass. “She was [also] featured on the Today Show on the Smuckers Jelly Jar for her 100th birthday.”

Blass added that Jenner was “always hoping” Willard Scott would call her.

Jenner loves playing cards and is still “very active” in doing so.

“She plays a few times a week in Florida and can’t wait to get home to play with her friends in town,” Blass said.

Jenner is known to her friends and family as being a jokester.

Another interesting fact about Jenner is she, her siblings and a few of her friends have passed the same birthday card back and forth for over 20 years.

“They’re writing smaller each time to fit in greetings over the year,” Blass said.

Cornelia has already arrived in town from her home base in northeastern Tennessee and is involved in the usual schedule of auditions and meetings, plus a special reception to unveil the 2017–2018 season. She has never met the soloist but is “really looking forward to getting to work and making music with him.” She points out that a lot of singers have their particular speciality, but she knows that this baritone does so many different things so well. Just imagine her smile as she adds, “I’m really excited.”

Indeed, the audience can look forward to a real treat. Nathan Gunn has sung at the Met to great acclaim for many years, playing such roles as the heart-breaking Billy Budd, or the ruthless Clyde Griffiths in the 2004 premiere of An American Tragedy, or the debonair Danilo in The Merry Widow with Renée Fleming in the 2014-2015 season, or—most famously—the bird catcher Papageno in both the German and English versions of The Magic Flute, a role he will reprise in the coming season’s holiday series. He sings with numerous other opera companies and orchestras both here and abroad and in recent

years has appeared prominently in premieres of new American operas. We have heard him in two remarkable recitals in Ithaca, accompanied by his wife, Julie Jordan Gunn, and in recital at Glimmerglass. As for American musical theater, he has appeared, for example, in the title role in Sweeney Todd and as Gaylord Ravenal in Showboat. Many saw him on PBS as Billy Bigelow in the 2013 Live from Lincoln Center production of Carousel. His presentations are always beautiful to hear, at times delightfully amusing, and invariably strong in their portrayal of character and emotion.

Saturday’s program opens with two works

by Ravel, starting with Le tombeau de Couperin, composed during World War I. The original version for piano is in six baroque dance movements, each dedicated to friends who died in the war. The name Couperin was given only because this musician in Louis XIV’s court was the most famous French composer during the baroque period. Ravel’s own orchestration uses just four of the movements, and the feeling is “light-hearted and reflective,” as he felt “the dead are sad enough in their eternal silence.” Gunn will then sing Don Quichotte à Dulcinée, a cycle of three songs, varied in style and color and showing three very distinct personalities of the picaresque hero.

After Intermission comes the sparkling Overture to Mozart’s masterpiece, The Marriage of Figaro, with its “whispering beginning” and rollicking music, followed by Gunn performing the Count’s angry and jealous aria “Hai gia vinto la causa!” that comes early in opera’s 3rd act. Then we hear one of Cornelia’s “favorite little pieces,” the Intermezzo from Mascagni’s Cavalle-

ria rusticana. She describes it as serene and calm, with beautiful melodic changes, “a moment of quiet and reflection” before the next “fast part”— another opera favorite, the “Largo al factotum” by Rossini, where Figaro introduces himself in The Barber of Seville.

The concert closes with American music, starting off with the Hoedown movement from Aaron Copland’s ballet suite RodeoEndin. Then Gunn presents three songs in the folk tradition and orchestrated by Julie Gunn—“Poor Wayfaring Stranger” (made famous by the likes of Burl Ives, Johnny Cash, and Natalie Merchant), “Bound for the Promised Land,” and—in a lovely connection to the concert’s opening—a song popular with Union soldiers during the Civil War, “Tenting Tonight on the Old Campground.”

Cornelia Laemmli Orth sums up this program as having such a variety of musical styles and characters—classical art songs at the beginning, then opera, and American songs at the end. “Not many singers can do so many different styles, but this one can. And we can show all of it.” She added that this concert is especially important as it concludes her first season here working with an orchestra that is “very inspiring, with “beautiful music making.” She has come to love Ithaca and its people and their “sense of humor.” She feels “thankful and proud to be part of this organization, of this community.”

Often times people will come up to me after a concert with tears in their eyes, saying how moving the experience was. They’re connecting with the slaves through these songs, and the power is real.”

Whitehead holds tryouts for the group, but says that if you can sing in pitch, that’s pretty much the extent of the technical side.

Singing Negro Spirituals that burst in stunning and uplifting ways, the diverse collection of singers offer a glimpse into one of American’s richest and most important traditions. The music is eternal and beyond life, proving infinitely-fold, the strength of hope and love.

“I thought about forming a group like this for years,” Whitehead reflected last week from his office at Ithaca College, where he’s the Associate Professor of Music Education. “This was the music that I grew up with in Louisiana. I would hear my Grandmother singing these spirituals all the time and think to myself, why would anyone want to listen to this music, these are the songs of slaves.”

“I never got a chance to ask her why she listed to them,” Whitehead continued.

“But when I reflect back on it, I think she got courage and encouragement from these songs. And I think it’s the same with the slaves who originated them—the songs provided hope for a better life—someplace they could be outside themselves without being shackled. Music has always had the power to allow people to escape.”

The power of the Negro Spirituals is extremely pure. The depth in them rings

It’s not necessary about technique and the musical skill of the individual (though the whole group is insanely talented). It’s about the passion.

“I look more at the person’s heart if I can,” Whitehead explained. “I think most people in the group really believe in the mission, and this is what makes it so special. The music is an African American art form and the majority of the people singing in the group are white. They have a deep commitment to seeing these songs preserved.”

If you’ve never experienced the Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers, you’d be very wise to this Friday. There’s a spirituality and oneness to the experience that will leave you wondrously empty. But this is not a negative emptiness, rather, it’s an emptiness that is full, one of completeness and clear vision. The world is in pain right now, hearing the music of slaves, many of whom lived their whole lives in pain, can give you courage to believe there is a better way.

The Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers will infinitely move you, and the world needs to be moved right now. •

Get to the movie theater this week and be moved

F

or all the talk that cinema is timeless, some films are utterly of their time, movies like A Face in the Crowd, Network, Wall Street and The Big Short. James Ponsoldt’s The Circle, based on a Dave Eggers novel I’m wild to read, is like that. In it, Emma Watson plays a new employee at a state-of-the-art internet company, but the story that unfolds doesn’t feel like science fiction, but science fifteen minutes from now.

It’s about how social media and Twitter and Facebook and texting have changed society. As Watson settles into a customer service job at The Circle, the company’s top guru, played by Tom Hanks as a combination of Steve Jobs, Walt Disney and, well, Tom Hanks, unveils The Circle’s latest innovation: eyeball-sized cameras in all colors that can be placed anywhere and can record, store and analyze everything it sees. Now

the world will be forced to be transparent. Everyone will be held responsible for their actions.

Ponsoldt has made some most interesting films lately; earlier titles like Smashed and The Spectacular Now dealt with alcoholism and addiction in perceptive and surprising ways, and The End of the Tour was a magnificent two-hander between Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Segal, and a fitting tribute to the late David Foster Wallace. Now comes this dark and mordant techno-comedy with surprisingly effective thriller moments.

I’m not sure I buy the film’s final moment, but a very interesting sci-fi twist could be argued as a possible resolution. Ponsoldt’s reputation – he co-wrote the screenplay with Eggers – ensures a magnificent cast. Hanks has fun poking around the edges of his own movie star persona, and the fine supporting cast includes Patton Oswalt as The Circle’s CEO, John Boyega, Ellar Coltrane and Glenne Headly and the late Bill Paxton in his last film role as Watson’s well-meaning but private parents.

Watson carries the movie effortlessly. Her recent turn in Beauty and the Beast may be making all the money, but this is the more interesting film of the two; too bad Constant Companion and I were the only attendees at a recent evening show. If you like to support films in the theater, I wouldn’t dawdle. *** Mere minutes into James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2., Gunn pulls off a hilarious bravura sequence all in one shot with the rest of the GOTG gang fighting a massive baddie while Baby Groot dances to ELO’s “Mr. Blue Sky” in the foreground.

Like the rest of the movie, we get tour de force sequences one after another in one of those perfect sequels that advance all the characters, find new humor and emotional depth in supporting characters and also delivers what may well end up as the year’s most kick-ass mix tape. (As someone who got razzed for loving ELO back in the day, it’s nice not to have to be defensive about it anymore.)

I wouldn’t want to spoil the plot, so I won’t, save to say that Kurt Russell is a welcome addition to the series. What I find interesting is Marvel’s choice of Gunn to helm these wildly popular flicks.

A veteran of Troma, Gunn usually applies the same extreme tone shifts in his own films Slither, Super and the recent The Belko Experiment. If I were Marvel Studios, I don’t know that I would have been that daring with my billion-dollar franchise. But Gunn is brilliant at mixing comic book stuff with more subversive elements while still maintaining a beautiful, beating heart.

You will believe a talking raccoon can cry. • Recommended: Mad Max: Fury Road in 3D, Monty Python’s Life of Brian, My Neighbor Totoro and Psycho at Cornell Cinema.

Gilbert Gottfried visits CRT Downtown

omedian Gilbert Gottfried had the misfortune of replacing the original cast of “Saturday Night Live” in 1981 – an act he compares to replacing the Beatles – but he’s had a long and varied career since then. Fans of USA’s “Up All Night” will remember Gottfried fondly, and he’s

been the voice of the AFLAC duck, Iago the Parrot in Disney’s Aladdin films and Digit in the PBS show “Cyber Chase”.

His version of the title joke in the documentary The Aristocrats oddly became the moral spine of the film. His other film credits include the Problem Child franchise,

Beverly Hills Cop 2, Dr. Doolittle and The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. Since 2014, Gottfried has been interviewing fascinating fringe show business characters on “Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast”.

Gottfried will perform his unique brand of stand up at CRT Downtown on May 12 at 7:30. He spoke to the Ithaca Times about his act and the title he originally considered for his podcast.

Ithaca Times: What are you riffing about these days?

Gilbert Gottfried: Oh, God, I don’t know. Whenever someone asks me about my material or anything, I always cringe and go, “Oh, my God, that’s awful.” Every now and then, I’ll be performing or in a TV show or something, and part of my

brain will click on, “Oh, my God, what am I doing here?” It’s like, when you do it long enough, there’s the problem of doing stuff on auto-pilot.

IT: I love the podcast. Did you always have the kinds of guests you get in mind?

GG: Yeah. My co-host Frank Santopadre, I knew him from before, and he’s one of those people like myself who have knowledge of useless show biz information.

We would get into these conversations.

When it came time to start the podcast, it was like, “Well, this is what I know about. [laughs.] This is what I like to talk about.”

When it started, I thought, “No one’s going to be listening to all these small-time actors and actresses that nobody knows. And we’ll be talking about other actors or actresses that no one knows.” And then I found out – I get this all the time – tweeting, saying they didn’t know who that person was, and now they do know. They started looking it up on the internet. It became like a fun homework assignment.

IT: I was raised on all those reruns, so at my age, it’s exciting to hear guys like Burt Ward on the show.

GG: Yes! I always say that growing up, the greatest films in the country were in your living room. You turned on the TV and they had movies: Universal monster movies. Those were my favorites. And they had cheap horror films, too. And on another channel, you’d see all those gangster movies with Bogart, Robinson and Cagney. Some stations would show old musicals. You got a taste of everything. A lady recently died: Marni Nixon, and she did the singing for everybody back then, all the actresses. And back then you’d say, “Boy, that actress can sing!” And now you see any actor or actress sing, the first thing that pops into your head is “Is that really them?”

IT: On the Dick Miller episode, you said that he was on the top of your guest list that you made when you started the show.

Is there anyone you haven’t been able to get?

GG: Oh yeah. I’m always reluctant to say their names, because either then they won’t want to do the show or they’ll die right after I say their name. My original title for the podcast was The Before It’s Too Late Show.

whip snapping. This is straight up old school thrash, and it’s damn killer. The band’s got two ripping demos out: “Life Can Kill You,” a raw and meaty NYC hardcore meets early San Fran thrash anthem; and “They Are Motorhead,” an almost-psychedelic homage to one of lead singer, guitarist and band founder, Dave Henninger’s, greatest inspirations: Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead.

“As the song was coming together, Motorhead just came to mind because it kind of reminded me of their style,” Henninger said. “I decided to write the lyrics based on the time I saw them at the Water Street Music Hall in Rochester so long ago. The timing was ironic as that song was written almost exactly one month before Lemmy passed away.”

Spit Nickels bend organic in the same gritty way Motorhead did. Henninger, drummer Cameron Chardeen, and bassist “Soldier” Vincent Devillavicencio, lock in at terminal velocity, pulsing waves through dark, spike-infused precision.

The band’s vision lies equally within its technical prowess and emotional grit. But it’s the “feeling” part of Spit Nickels that is the group’s greatest strength.

Seems to have come out pretty decent.”

And what about the name Spit Nickels? Have you ever heard of anything so tactile and punk?

“As a kid growing up, if any of my siblings or I dared to tell my mom we were bored, a few of the things she would commonly say were: ‘Go clean your room’ (as if), ‘Sit on a tack and holler hammer’ or ‘Stand on your head and spit nickels,’” Henninger laughed. “I never really understood what the two later terms meant as a kid, but I always thought Spit Nickels would be a cool name for a band.”

Spit Nickels play a super-stacked show this Friday at The Haunt. Central New York’s bustling heavy metal scene will be well represented. For Henninger, it’s something like a family gathering.

The Tastes of India

Diamond’s offers a myriad of flavors

very once in awhile, I open one of my Indian cookbooks, turn to a recipe, review the page-long list of spices and their various treatments, and feel the need to take a nap. Good Indian cooking, which varies significantly by its region of origin, is complex and time consuming.

If I can’t get dinner on the table in 20 minutes, I’m ordering in! And that’s only one of the reasons I’m so fond of New Delhi Diamonds – they do all that roasting, grinding, and balancing – their spices always fresh. And – every time – they do such a good job of it.

At Diamond’s, a row of soft banquettes lines a street-facing window running the width of the restaurant. It’s a spot offering a great vantage point for people-watching, though perhaps the better people-watching is indoors; taking in intense-looking graduate students, globetrotters back from their adventures, those who help hold our communities together through their work in social services, librarians and those Commons denizens – your everyday workers and residents – with adventurous palates and lots to discuss.

If you’re turning peckish around lunchtime, their lunch buffet will set you back a mere $9.90 including tax (but not tip) with a cornucopic array of NorthIndian flavors. The offerings change, but a recent lunch buffet included a rice pilaf made with fragrant basmati rice and dotted with peas; deep-fried vegetable pakora, a fritter of sorts, made with gluten-free

chickpea flour; band gobi, a sweet and hot mélange of cabbage and peas with a few deep red chili peppers providing warmth on a bone-chilling day; aloo rajma, a wet curry of potatoes and kidney beans; aloo sag, a delightfully soupy mix of spinach and potatoes with lots of ghee (the consumption of which will render you strong as Popeye).

There’s also chana dal, a sort of split yellow pea curry; vegetable korma with a tangy yogurt sauce; several chicken preparations – curried chicken, makana chicken(tandoori chicken in a cream sauce) and straight tandoori chicken; fresh naan, a flatbread slapped up against the sides of the restaurant’s clay tandoor oven and baked until slightly charred outside and tender inside, and served warm from the oven.

A recent take-out order included a basmati rice pulao, dotted with peas, and seeming to forward the sweet-and-sour musky flavor of tamarind, cumin seeds, and the occasional sweet pop of a small fruit, perhaps a raisin. (Did we detect a bit of rosewater?) For Kashmiri chicken, large chunks of the bird’s boneless breast rested in a rich, tangy cream sauce speckled with cashews. And hunks of lamb, in a Persianbased rogan josh, luxuriated in a mildly spicy, tomato-y sauce with chunks of fresh tomato. Portions were generous, flavor wanted for nothing, and it was packed carefully enough to weather the trip home, arriving at our table hot.

Many of Diamond’s offerings will please vegans, vegetarians, and the gluten-

averse. There are also a few basic salad ingredients, a vat of the cooling Indian rice dessert, kheer, spiked with cardamom, and three condiments: a spicy, red, onion chutney, a spicy relish made of macerated greens and chilis, and a sweet tamarind sauce – so you can adjust the heat of your meal to your own preference. And there’s raita, a mix of yogurt and cucumbers, to cool things down.

Traveling in the south of India, I learned that you could only produce the reflexive consonants of the Telugu language (50 million speak it – who knew?) if you’d burned your mouth. I do like spicy food. However, the owners are Punjabi, from the North of India, and the spices are pretty tame at Diamond’s, hence the relishes. Choose your heat and make yourself comfortable. The place is calming, decorated with Indian fabric hangings and framed prints. The beat of soft Indian music in the background lowers my blood pressure every time.

much things have changed in the last oh-Idon’t-really-want-to-say-how-long. The gas station across the street had been owned by Mayor Ed Conley, who built the Commons in 1974. The library’s predecessor was a favorite place to kill a lunch hour – an entertaining Woolworth’s. The restaurant itself was George’s, a hangout for politicians who’d worked up an appetite arguing in nearby City Hall, in the days when Ithaca was a predominantly Republican stronghold; then it became Ithaca’s first Mexican restaurant, Dos Amigos, where my favorite waiter, Chuck Hooper, cheered the place up. Heading west on Green, there was a camera store, followed by a music shop, now empty. Where D.P. Dough is now, The Haunt, a nightclub, offered some of the best Reggae music, plenty of sweaty dancing, and cheap booze. And where Life’s So Sweet now dispenses chocolate-covered candied ginger and other dark temptations, the Ithaca Journal’s receiving area accepted delivery of mammoth rolls of newsprint and, as the drunks were staggering home, dispensed newspapers to delivery people, chains on their tires on the worst of nights. It was a much different, four-story max, Ithaca. Can Diamond’s food induce melancholy on a regular basis? I’ll have to dine there a few more times to test that thesis. And I’ll have a damned jolly time doing it! •

If Process is one thing, it’s tight. Crisp and refined, the impressions are lush and sizable, allowing the band to concentrate on greater things like complexity and conceptual structure. Like on “Music Behind the Box,” a thorough and shifting monologue about one of rock ’n’ roll’s all-time behemoths.

“It was actually written about Jimi Hendrix,” lead singer and Joe’s sister, Amanda Massa, explained. “When Jimi was

first record the band can honestly say is a whole idea.

“The present lineup is really the first one where everyone is on the same page artistically,” noted guitarist Joe Massa. “And I think it really shows. Process has a real purpose to it, and it’s taken a long time to really build this vision.”

The vision Massa speaks of is multiplex. Each song and subsequent section on the new record feels tenured and shared. Seven members is a large number for any band, especially one that wants to keep growing creatively. Thru Spectrums have managed to do so with honesty and variance. The new record showcases the strengths from each member. From deep funk cuts, to classy pop, progressive rhythm and nu-school rhythm and blues, the band delivers solid on all fronts. Often, several forms coalesce in one single composition, like on “Social Mist,” the album’s epic closer.

“I think the varying elements within each song strengthens the impression one gets when experiencing the band,” keyboardist and backup singer Sam Lupowitz said. “The whole process now is about serving the purpose of the entire group, and I think that’s the most important thing we’ve learned over the years. a young boy listening to the radio he was curious about where the sound was coming from, so he took the radio apart. I thought it was just such an amazing story and the visuals were so real to me.”

Thru Spectrums are something of a family affair. Joe and Amanda are brother and sister and Amanda’s husband, Bob McMahon, plays trumpet. McMahon along with saxophonist Alec Staples, play in other local funk bands together, and Lupowitz met Staples while at Ithaca College.

After eight years of varying combinations, Thru Spectrums are at its loftiest peak yet. Artistically the band is sparkling, and Process is a defining statement.

“There have been so many lineup changes over the years that one of the goals now is to record a live album with the group we have now,” Joe said. “All the old sections and arrangements have changed a great deal, and everything is so much more tight and complete now. I really want to get it all one record and really showcase this force we have.”

Get the funk out this Friday and head up to The Range. It’ll be shaking. •

W

the rehearsals for Running to Places’ (R2P) Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat this much fun, the show is a guaranteed winner. I listened in as the cast sang through the score one Sunday afternoon and, like many of the actors, I couldn’t keep still. The music raised my spirits, set my toes tapping and my shoulders bopping.

With Andrew Lloyd Webber as composer (lyrics by Tim Rice), it’s no surprise that the show’s music is so captivating.

Joey Steinhagen, R2P artistic director, tells me there’s a theater legend that Webber wrote “Joseph” on a dare; the legend explains the show’s absurd range of music.

“The thing that makes the show so funny is that every song is in a different style,” explains Jeremy Pletter, R2P resident music director. “Elvis, Calypso, a Sixties Go-Go number -- you never know what will come next.”

During rehearsal, Pletter jokes with the cast as much as he encourages them.

“This is straight rock n’roll,” he instructs them as they begin to sing “Stone the Crows.” Sure enough, the song even has its own teeny bopper fan chorus.

The Ink Shop Printmaking Center will show Blinded by the Truisms, a series of paintings and monoprints

by Skye Schirmer. Skye aims to mirror the ways in which we recycle and transform memories and experiences via social media.

pieces fitted together. It’s intentionally simple, says Steinhagen, because “the show is so silly and deliberately anachronistic, the costumes and music paint enough of a picture.”

The plot is a familiar one, based on the story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis. The show-within-a-show opens with kids at a playground excluding one boy; as the four narrators (Addy Whitener, Elsbeth O’Toole, Madelyn Kilmer, Dani Copeland) step in to tell the tale, the kids transform into different characters, with the excluded boy playing Joseph (Jasper Fearon), favorite son of the patriarch Jacob (Fiona Lory-Moran). Joseph’s eleven jealous brothers hatch a plot to kill him but decide to sell him instead to the Egyptian Potiphar (Elliott Nelson).

Destiny intervenes when Pharaoh (Kii Kinsella) starts having bad dreams. In a series of plot twists, all comes out right, and the show ends with a rousing, heartwarming reunion.

“The show is really about being true to yourself and kind and forgiving to other people,” explains Steinhagen.

“The story of Joseph is used to illustrate how we should all move through the world and how we should treat each other. With fun dances along the way.”

Fearon adds that Joseph feels alone, as many people have experienced at some point in their lives. “That’s a pretty relatable thing.” By the end of the show, says Fearon, Joseph understands that being alone is okay; rather than letting it crush him, he gets back on his feet.

“He shows resilience and keeps going… people will appreciate that.”

praises their high level of skill. “The company has evolved and developed so much since the last time we did this show, in 2011. The level of what these kids bring into the room just keeps rising.

Many in the company take voice and dance lessons now; those who don’t learn more quickly because of the higher expectations in the environment.”

The show is family-friendly, with almost no spoken dialogue: a true rock opera. And with the biggest cast R2P has ever had – 65 strong – there will be plenty of action on stage to captivate the audience. Steinhagen consulted with choreographer Tucker Davis on the many dance styles needed to match the many

life scenes. In the future, she plans to venture into oils and (perhaps) contemporary themes. The exhibit will be up through May and June.
