ndependent Keith Hannon, when first deciding to run for office, actually missed his chance to register as a democrat.

So it looks like his upstart campaign for the county legislature in the diverse fifth district (comprising the Town of Ulysses and portions of the Towns of Enfield and Ithaca) will come opposite a seasoned pillar of the county’s political landscape on the ballot.

Hannon, a former entertainment business worker-turned IC communications lecturer and public relations man for the Boyce Thompson Institute (he was once social media manager for Cornell), grew up in the Binghamton area.

As his story goes, went to IC, fled from IC, went to L.A., met his wife (a St. Louis native caught up in the music business), got married and after having their first child, decided it was time to leave L.A., despite the loss in income. His local roots run close to two decades, however, and when the couple decided to settle down in Tompkins County, he said, was really the only area they considered; the quality of life aspect, he said, was too strong to turn down.

He said his politics, as result of his experience in L.A., are strongly representative of his earlier years, coming up in a venerable mixing pot where even on your softball team, “your teammates might be speaking two or three other languages,” he candidly notes.

As a resident of Trumansburg, arguably the county’s fastest developing village, he said he sees room to not only serve as a vocal representative for the village as well as the continued on page 4

f you’ve ever sat down on a sun-kissed autumn afternoon, picked up the newspaper and saw the ubiquitous crossword puzzle on the last page, you’ve probably thought to yourself, “I can do that.”

Money raised at the event goes to Tompkins Learning Partners, which uses the funds to support its educational programs across the county, which assist illiterate adults or those who are learning English as a second language, to read and write and possibly advance their educational pos-

Last year’s individual Toughest Level champion, Jacob Lehman, will return to defend his crown carrying with him some high expectations. Weissbrot said last year Lehman blazed through the individual finale in about eight minutes, nearly half the time it took for the winners of the team finale to finish their puzzle.

His eyes, along with the rest of the participants will be on the newly-commissioned trophy of this year’s Finger Lakes crossword battle royale, a bauble sure to evoke awe whenever it is seen around town.

“The highly-coveted Finger Lakes Crossword Champ bracelet,” Weissbrot said. “It’s just like the World Series of

Poker bracelet, but no gold or diamonds.”

Don’t fret, however. Every winner is awarded the wrist adornment.

Other prizes include a copy of the movie Wordplay, a 100th anniversary crossword collection book signed by the late San Francisco Chronicle crossword legend Merl Reagle, and even ping-pong balls signed by the New York Times’ puzzle poobah Will Shortz, who also happens to be a ping-pong fanatic. There will be a silent auction for gift certificates to a variety of different restaurants and stores around the county, along with bidding on a personalized puzzle from Perl.

Weissbrot said the event brought in $9,000 of funds for TL Partners with about 100 participants, and he is optimistic they can top that figure this year. He said the event has stood the test of time so far, and once people get in the door they end up enjoying them-

TC3 Faculty Ok’d For Union

A former schoolteacher, Dennis has also been instrumental in personnel discussions during his time in office and sits on five committees, chairing the Budget, Capital, and Personnel Committee. Despite his opponent’s experience, Hannon said in his decision to run this year, it’s now or never.

“It was hard for me to decide whether or not it was a good time for me to do this, because I have a young family,” Hannon said. “But with the national dialogue lately, getting more people to run for office, you start to realize it’s never going to feel like a good time.”

his week, the TompkinsCortland Community College (TC3) adjunct professors announced they had been notified by the NYS Public Employment Relations Board that the adjunct professors may form their own union, separate from the fulltime faculty.

Previously, both groups had been represented under the same umbrella, the TompkinsCortland Community College Faculty Association. The ruling legitimizes the TC3 Adjunct Association, representing adjuncts and tutors at the school, and the TC3AA expects to be officially certified soon. This brings to a close a 21 month process that started with a hearing before the Public Employment Relations Board in which the union argued for separation while the college lobbied for their continued integration.

The release thanked the Tompkins County Workers’ Center for their contributions, and said the union has been contacted by school officials who are eager to work out a contract wit the adjunct staff.

The situation is eerily similar to Ithaca College’s current situation, in which the school and adjunct faculty continue to spar over pay parity and contract lengths after months of negotiations and threats of a strike.

The further unionizing and subsequent contract haggling will be an interesting story to watch, as it comes at a period of some tumult at TC3. This week, the school is having their three finalists for the college’s presidential position visit the community to answer questions from locals, while a budgetary shortfall has opened the door for possible layoffs on the horizon.

“We hope we can continue to count on your support and encouragement as we move toward in the coming months to build a strong union and win a fair contract for TC3 adjuncts and tutors,” the statement said.

CMC States Case In NLRB Hearing

W

ith the final week of the National Labor Relations Board hearings in progress, Cayuga Medical Center will finally get a chance to battle against its own staff’s opening salvos.

Two nurses, Anne Marshall and Loran Lamb, were terminated in after a patient complained they had broken protocol during a September blood transfusion. Marshall had conducted the transfusion by herself; two nurses are required to check the blood units outside the room and at the patient’s bedside to ensu re accuracy.

Some of t he deta i ls of t he actual event are disputed: t he patient claims she raised her concerns to Marshall at the time and was dismissed, which Marshall whol ly denies.

Regardless, the end resu lt was two fired nurses, who are now contesting the real reason they were fired was due to residual tensions over Marshall’s campaigning to unionize CMC’s nurses, a stance Lamb had publicly supported at work.

For nine days of proceedings, lawyers Jessica Noto and Alicia Pender from the National Labor Relations Board and Mimi Satter from the SEIU have hammered away at the policies of Cayuga Medical Center, lining up nurse after nurse to provide a sample of their daily life in the Intensive Care Unit.

That sample has not been f lattering, either. The hospital’s ICU has been portrayed throughout the trial as a place that functions solely because of the nursing staff’s extra efforts to shortcut the policies nominally designed to help them.

Understaffing, lax oversight, and a pervasive culture of topdown negligence has been the prevailing theme of the testi-

mony provided by the approximately ten current and former CMC nurses called by the NLRB so far.

Marshall and Lamb gave the most pivotal testimony, though both played starkly contrasting roles on the stand. Marshall was combative as the trailblazer type, while Lamb presented the image of someone who may have been caught in the crossfire. At one point, Lamb stated outright that during the early part of the discipline process, she mentally accepted her ter-

t he delinquent nu rse behav ior and did nothing to address it, such as what Mike Doan, a former nurse manager in the ICU testified, they are essentially complicit in the very act for which they fired Marshall and Lamb. On the other, if the violations were as widespread as the nurses have insisted, it would seem to implicate a harmfully opaque wall between nurse and the hospital’s overseers should they have been unaware of their staff’s actions.

It is important to remember that only one side of the case has been completely presented to

mination since, in her words, the hospital wanted them both out for their unionizing.

When given a choice between resignation and termination, Lamb said she chose to resign. Lamb did, at one point, state she was worried about her nursing license in the aftermath of the incident but before her firing, which CMC’s lawyer Raymond Pascucci used to contradict her claim of ignorance of the rules.

Aside from another straight retelling of the incident, Marshall told of what she thought were subt le union-busting actions taken by the hospital, stripping the staff break rooms and bu lletin boards of her union materials.

If management knew about

this point. Pascucci has battled each opposing witness tooth and nail, combing through each word of their testimony and seeking any vulnerability.

Pascucci has thusfar sought specifics in the nurse’s testimony they have yet to provide on the record. He is scheduled to finish his case this Friday, after which the administrative judge will begin mulling her decision.

CMC begins its defense this week. Their first two witnesses have been Star York, sister of the complainant who testified during the first week due to scheduling problems, and Daniel Sudilovsky, who serves as the Medical Director of Laboratories at CMC and took the stand last Friday. York expounded

upon her experience at CMC and buttressed her sister’s version of the interaction with Marshall during the transfusion. Meanwhile, Sudilovsky, who wrote the transfusion policy, blamed arrogance and carelessness when presented with the testimony of other nurses having disobeyed the rules.

A key component of Sudilovsky’s statements were that when he was consulted about punishment for the September protocol violation, he suggested termination without knowing Marshall and Lamb were the personnel involved.

The future implications of the trial are intriguing as well for the hospital. Pascucci, so far, has built a case based on t hese seemi ng ly sma l l protocol malfeasances that in reality are potentially fatal in a worst case s c e n a r i o . H o wever, almost every nurse who has testified on behalf of the the nurses and the union has admitted to some sor t of v iolation of varying degree, whether it be frequently performing a solo transfusion, occasionally signing forms after the action instead of before, or admitting to limited knowledge of the protocol in general.

In essence, those who have testified have all admitted to similar rulebreaking actions, though without the ability or willingness to name specific witnesses or circumstances, a point Pascucci has emphasized. The union, as of late, has presented a picture of institutional rule-breaking and violations committed – in part, to high staff turnover in recent months.

Another subplot has arisen during the last week, as the NLRB filed a 10j injunction on behalf of Marshall. The injunction would allow her to return to work at CMC while the hearings and any appeals play out.

It is unclear where that process currently stands.

According to the rumor mill, there is an established, much-beloved business opening a new location in the old Felicia’s location on West State Street. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but one thing is for sure: it won’t be the same booze and cupcakes establishment it once was. ▶ Speaking Of Booze, The History Center of Tompkins County and Historic Ithaca are teaming up for a historicallythemed bar crawl.

Stops for the crawl, which is happening April 22, include Bar Argos, the Chanticleer, Simeon’s, the Watershed and Bandwagon Pub, with tickets running $20 per person.

A Town Hall To Remember I t’s no secret that, after a long period of waiting, Congressman Tom Reed is coming to Ithaca to do a formal town hall, his first such appearance in just about two years.

These town halls, of which Reed has held more of than 99 percent of his peers according to a recent survey by Capitol Hill-centric outlet, The Hill, signifies a major step toward connecting with the uber-liberal constituency of Ithaca and greater Tompkins County which, as we noted in a recent editorial, has served as little more than a political prop in his campaign efforts.

This is encouraging, we say, because it only goes to affirm the mantra he has repeated over and over both on a recent spree of national television and placement in several prominent websites with national audiences.

“I firmly believe that you can’t represent people unless you talk with them and listen to them,” Reed wrote for the respected Conservative website, The Daily Caller, last month. “This isn’t just a platitude. I truly care about what people think. As a result, this type of open conversation allows for a stronger democracy and more responsive government.”

The residents of Ithaca, ever the activists, have more than proven their

enthusiasm for the congressman’s upcoming visit. Over social media, hundreds have expressed their interest in every aspect of the event, from the seating capacity of the Southside Community Center’s gymnasium to whoever is represented in the one hour span Reed has allotted our portion of the constituency.

Upon a close following of these efforts, what we have noticed is an incredible enthusiasm, sure, but also an extreme lack of focus.

While we do not present a solution on how best to orchestrate the needs and priorities of what is clearly such a large group, we would like to leave you something to ponder.

Trump, of whom Reed was an early supporter during a volatile juncture of the presidential race, has provided a multitude of things to be enraged over. As such, his opponents have a multi-pronged rage, reflecting a diversity of interests which in no way, can be expressed in the “constructive” type of manner some GOP congressmen have sought in holding town halls. Ithaca has just one hour and, unlike the Tea Partier’s approach of past years, more than one grievance: the progressive qualm with the current administration and its congress is not simply institutional, it’s philosophical. The punching bag in this scenario isn’t simply epitomized in a single scapegoat, like Obamacare or a supposed loss of morality, the waving flag of ‘80s conservatism: for we supposed uber-liberals, it seems our gripe lies more in opposition against the whole, freakin’ thing.

Reed believes what he believes: he’s gone on record as saying that. And while “constructive questions” on where disagreements lay are good, we risk wasting them on what’s already decided. Instead, let’s focus on what makes for a stronger government: a dialogue to connect our lives at the very bottom to the voices of power at the very top.

people of color, people with low incomes, and people who live in rural areas. More than half of Planned Parenthood health centers are in rural or medically underserved communities. In 21 percent of counties where they see patients, Planned Parenthood health centers are the one and only safety-net family planning provider.

For many of these patients, there is nowhere else to go for care.

That is why I traveled to Washington, D.C. on March 1st alongside hundreds of other Planned Parenthood patients and health care providers, to tell Representative Reed and Senator Gillibrand that we won’t stand for these attacks on our health care and the provider we trust.

Here in New York, Planned Parenthood cares for about 200,000 patients each year.

We don’t go to Planned Parenthood to make a political statement. We go for compassionate, affordable, high-quality health care. Every person, no matter who they are or how much money they make, deserves that kind of care.

By Vaughn Golden Barbara Lifton NY State Assembly Assemblywoman (and former teacher) Lifton followed through on promises in her town halls the previous week to demand an increase in education funding for the 2017-2018 state budget. Lifton joined other assembly democrats in announcing their calls for an additional $4.3 billion to be added to the governor’s budget. The Republican-held senate mirrored the democrats’ request and included a similarly scoped tax credit in the its budget proposal which passed last week.

Tom O’Mara NY State Senate Senator O’Mara and his Republican cohorts in the senate passed their take on the governor’s proposed budget. Highlights of the plan include a tax credit to boost education funding, a tax cut for middle class working families and an emphasis on supporting economic development and manufacturing. A kickball that continues to bounce in and out of the senate codes committee is a bill that would effectively repeal the SAFE Act for upstate counties. The legislation would still however impose restrictions on assault rifles and large ammo capacities on counties in the New York metropolitan area. O’Mara cosponsors the bill which may pass the senate, but would likely be shot down in the assembly.

Tom Reed U.S. Congress House Republicans took part in their own version of spring cleaning this week. Three bills passed the house with the aim of slashing unnecessary spending and other bureaucratic waste. The highlight of these pieces of legislation was the SCRUB Act, which establishes in independent commission of individuals to review and recommend for repeal federal agency policies which it deems “unnecessary and burdensome.”

The commission requires $6 million a year to facilitate, but the legislation aims to eliminate a lofty 15 percent of regulation costs. House Democrats proposed several amendments to the bill to bar the commission from slashing federal regulations on rules protecting whistleblowers, agreements with respect to sovereign Native American entities, and the Clean Air Act, however these efforts failed. Democratic Congressman Elijah Cummings did however successfully pass an amendment barring former lobbyists from sitting on the commission.

Congressman Reed plans to follow through on promises to visit Ithaca. Saturday, March 11, Reed will host a town hall at Southside Community Center at 8:00 a.m. before attending three other town halls across the 23rd District.Both houses will cut their work short on Tuesday to gather for President Trump’s address to congress.

A Reel Treasure Cayuga Lake’s anglers have access to one of the best salmon fisheries in the country.

If we can keep it, that is.

By Kurt Hoefig P hotos by Casey M a rti n Ithaca Fishing Day is scheduled for Saturday, March 25 at Ithaca High School from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The free event has a special focus on fly-fishing directed at young people but also offers resources to learn more about the sport of fishing and the local cold water environment.

n early spring is on Ithaca’s horizon and with it, our eyes turn to fishing season.

Ithacans may not realize but in this unique watershed, Ithaca’s residents have access to some of the best cold-water fishing in the state right in our own backyards. Cayuga Lake, a unique alpine lake with marshlands at both end and deep waters at its center, boasts an abundant population of landlocked salmon that provides spectacular sport fishing for local anglers. Both hard-fighting and majestically colored, these landlocked salmon cruise the shorelines of Cayuga Lake during the colder months, making them easily targeted by shore anglers. An icy battle with one of these acrobatic silver beauties is a good way to start March off right.

But the fish are also a complicated breed.

Cayuga and Seneca Lakes, the population of these salmon is now maintained almost exclusively by a stocking program through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, where roughly 43,000 fingerling salmon are released into Cayuga Lake each year at three different state parks: Treman Marine Park in Cass Park, Taughannock Falls and Long Point State Park, in Aurora.

“Historically, we know liability of the eggs from our landlocked salmon here in Cayuga Lake is just about zero,” said David Lemon, the regional fisheries manager for DEC Region 7. “That’s why I can say with confidence the landlocked salmon fishery at Cayuga Lake is supported by stocking and it has been for a long time.”

Both carnivorous and aggressive, landlocked salmon follow baitfish in near the banks of the lake beginning in January and remain consistently catchable from shore until the end of April. Typically ranging between 17 and 24 inches, salmon 25 inches or larger are not uncommon and fish in excess of 10 pounds are caught every year.

Regarded as one of the most sought-after game fish, salmon are certainly a prize anywhere in the world and, in the area, are a

significant draw for the region’s sportsmen and women.

While some fishing experience is required, the approach to catching landlocked salmon here is relatively simple.

Using a live minnow rigged under a slip bobber is a preferred method among many shore anglers, but the salmons’ aggressive feeding tendencies allow them to be caught consistently on artificial lures as well. Like a dog that can’t resist chasing a ball, salmon are drawn to fast-moving artificial baits and hit with tenacious power. If they miss the first time, they’ll often strike repeatedly until they’re hooked. Lures resembling baitfish – such as Luhr Jensen krocodile spoons, Rapala shadow raps, and soft plastic paddle tail swimbaits – can be retrieved through the water with great success, sometimes proving to be more effective than live bait.

A medium action rod of seven feet or more is suggested in order to make long casts. Salmon fight incredibly when hooked, often leaping out of the water and putting on a real show. Ten-pound test fishing line normally provides strength enough for the battle. While spinning and casting rods are most efficient, anglers frequently take salm-

on on fly-fishing gear and streamer flies, another fantastic way to target them.

State su pported?

Why the area’s anglers have to rely on state aid to maintain the fishery isn’t some sort of anomaly but is, rather, the result of subtle changes to a food chain that have only gone to throw a wrench in an already complicated alpine lake ecosystem.

What has happened over a long period of time is there used to be a species of fish which served as a key food source for the salmon that, at one time, was uniquely genetic to this watershed. That’s disappeared now, partly due to the invasive zebra mussel, an infestation dating back to the early’90s.

“The crux of this whole thing is the zebra mussel has made the water too clear, affecting the forage base,” Mike Hogue, an enthusiast and owner of EFlyTyer.com (a fishing goods and resources website) said.

This happened by way of the mussels feeding on the plankton in the lake, interrupting the primary food source of the Mysid Shrimp, a small crustacean prominent at the base of the food chain. This led to a decline in the smelt population, a small

fish native to many freshwater lakes, while leading to an increase in other populations of fish. This population, unchallenged, replaced the smelt salmon as a food source and carried with it an enzyme called thiaminase, which when ingested split thiamin (Vitamin B1), an important compound in energy metabolism, and render it inactive, affecting reproduction. Low thiamine levels in fish brought on by consumption of this enzyme mean lowered chances of reproduction and, in effect, problems in keeping up a sustainable population.

Though some say the zebra mussels may be falling in number, the interruption in the ecosystem taking hold is what prompted salmon to be raised in the fisheries in the first place, said Hogue.

“The problem is,” Hogue said, “they’re stocked in one place.”

The reason, he said, is primarily from a convenience standpoint, their Taughannock Falls entry point centrally-located with good chance of dispersing throughout the waters of Cayuga Lake. However, there’s a large population of lake trout in the area which feed on the young salmon and, as a species, salmon tend to mark themselves by where they enter the water. If they come from a hatchery, like the salmon coming by way of Tunison Fishlabs in Cortlandville, they enter the ecosystem confused and disoriented. During the cold months, landlocked salmon in Cayuga can be found throughout the entire lake and can be pursued from multiple different public access points along both sides of Cayuga Lake.

Taughannock Falls State Park, a favorite spot among many locals, provides extensive shoreline access to very deep water.

Representatives from the DEC say that, despite the problems, populations are still significantly high enough for sport fishing and, as far as recent seasons have gone, the time to start looks to be coming early this year.

While most people consider fishing season to be in the warmer months of summer, the hot time to fish Cayuga is when the water is cold. Despite the recent warmer weather, the lake water remains around 40 degrees, an ideal temperature to fish for salmon. If you want the population to flourish, lower temperatures – and lots of

rain and snow – tend to help.

This is most evident in the lake by looking at the wild rainbow trout population – the only one of all Cayuga Lake’s significant species that make their way up the creeks to breed. Rainbow trout are the only species with significant natural recruitment and typically grow their populations in the inlet, a significant tributary in the Cayuga Lake watershed. Like last year, loss of snowpack, which makes for slow runoff and colder waters, and a warm spring is a

could be the rise of another invasive species, the lamprey, which were the subject of initial efforts by the DEC to thin their rapidly expanding numbers in 2014. Others point blame to the lake source cooling system utilized by Cornell University, which some said affected levels of phosphorus in the south end of the lake, leading to a decrease of the water’s oxygen content. (Though this is considered to be a very minor part of the equation.) In the long-term, however, habitat degradation – like the building up on

combination that allows fish to spawn early and head out into the lake, many of which are gone before April 1, making for a huge influx of Rainbow Trout entering the lake well before when is typical.

That’s not to say this is always a good thing.

“Not having a snowpack and having a little bit of a drought, I’m sure, led us to losing a lot of fish because the streams got so low.” said David Lemon, the DEC’s regional fishery manager for Region 7. “That probably had an impact on last year’s production in the end, despite having lots of eggs in the gravel and lots of young emerging. There’s just not a lot of habitat to survive in.”

Somehow along the way, there may have been a break in the year class of the local salmon population, sitting pretty at the top of the food chain. Many fishermen on Cayuga and Seneca Lakes have been reporting sightings of many fish that are the same size, meaning little variation in their age. In

wetland habitats in the city’ Southwest -can have its own consequences, all more or less caused by human activity. In the area around Lake Cayuga, a unique lake with three different habitats, different actions have different reactions Hogue said. This is particularly true of Ithaca’s water systems, two of which draw from Fall Creek and Six Mile Creek. Last summer, with a lack of rain or snowpack for instance, there was little chance for the streams to flush various contaminants from the waterways.

But other environmental impacts over the years, some man made, have affected the population even further and may even contribute to the population’s lack of growth over the years.

“There’s no denying in the last decade plus we’ve had a series of large storm events which have created f looding and scourTh e

ing of the Cayuga Inlet,” Lemon said. “If you walk that system, you’ll see many places where the bank has been ravaged back many feet – sometimes 60 or 70 feet of washout – where the exposed bank has created a significant amount of floodplain.

I’m not saying they were caused by climate change or not, I’m saying that we have experienced those events and had this series of erosional impacts to the stream.”

This means fewer trees providing shade and warmer waters, which makes guy here concerned. Though reproduction is fine a nd wel l, t he DEC did a survey one year ago finding that while the young population of fish fell within the range of what they typically see, as the stream has been degraded the likelihood for production could drop.

“I do think as far as the lake goes, the fishing potential of this area has never truly been fully exploited,” said Hogue. “We’ve never really had the chance to develop that resource to really get it going full range, to develop.”

This could dampen the best aspects of salmon fishing. Salmon not only offer excellent sport fishing but provide superb table fare as well. Though in the sport, catch and release is encouraged, keeping fish in moderation presently doesn’t harm the population. “The landlocks are the best eating fish in the lake,” said avid angler and Taughannock State Park regular James Hartwick.

“People buy salmon for how much a pound?

I got that covered.” Each angler may keep three landlocked salmon (minimum of 18 inches) out of Cayuga Lake daily.

That’s not to say the solutions in place are sustainable: fixing the inlet isn’t easy – it’s not as if everyone would plant a tree and have everything be okay – but there are areas that already need significant rehabilitation efforts that, thus far, haven’t been completed due to lack of funds.

“I know there’s a breaking point,” Lemon said. “I don’t have a crystal ball to tell you when that is [...] in years with lots of rain, you’re going to have a better chance for survival. We got production last year despite the drought but the more water there is, the better off they are.”

hen high school coaches see their players go out into the world, they’re pleased if kids have some tangibles to brag about – stuff like “We won three sectional titles,” or “We made it to two state finals” – but there are a few intangibles that make for nice mementos as well.

Mark Wenham recently reached out to

me with a list of former Ithaca High players who took some of those intangibles to the next level, and the list is impressive.

(Wenham knows of what he speaks – after playing his high school lacrosse at powerhouse West Genessee, he played for the Naval Academy in Annapolis and, later, Syracuse, before moving on to become an assistant coach at Alfred, Cornell and Ithaca High School. He has also been at

the helm of the Turkey Shoot Lacrosse Tournament for 25 years.) Mark said, “I just realized how many of our former IHS laxers have gone on to play in college and have been named captain. I’m very proud that we have had so many good, and evidently highly respected players come out of our program.” Mark then provided a list of some of these guys, and he is right… some former Little Red players have earned the right to play leadership roles at some very respectable colleges.

I reached out to Frank Welch, who has been the Little Red’s head coach for 40-plus years, and Frank was pleased talk about his guys. “It’s true,” he said. “A lot of our former players have been chosen as captains, and in fact, one year I think we had seven guys who went on to be team captains.“ I asked Welch if he and his staff consciously tried to cultivate leaders, and he said, “Not really. We put a lot of trust in our players, we don’t talk down to them and we try to make it ‘their team.’” He added, “They see the effort put in by our assistant coaches, they’re inspired by it, and they try to reach out to the younger kids on the team, and to the kids in the youth leagues.” Lest I get the idea that the Ithaca High lacrosse program is too warm and fuzzy, Welch laughed and said, “Also, we don’t take any sh… crap from them, and they see that while we respect them, they know who’s in charge.”

The players who come through Ithaca’s program are also accustomed to a culture of winning, and they know that tradition is something that has been earned and maintained by a lot of players. “These guys have worked very hard,” Welch said, “they respect the game, and while I would not call them ‘win-at-all-costs- players, I will just say that they are not ‘good losers.’”

Welch has seen many players go on to play at the various collegiate levels, and after four decades of conversations with recruiters, he knows what they are looking for. “Coaches like that our kids are used to doing things the right way,” Frank offered.

“A lot of them are not ‘Rah Rah’ guys; rather they lead by example. If things get tough, they don’t run and cry to mommy and daddy, and while they’re not always saints, they’re smart kids who do the right thing.”

Jeff Long is the head coach at Ithaca College, and his past two captains are Ithaca High alums. He added this: “Simply stated, and in my opinion, there are three major reason why the IHS kids become captains in college: One, they come out of a competitive academic environment at Ithaca High, two, they also come out of a competitive athletic environment and especially in the sport of lacrosse, have been coached by one of the best high school coaches in the nation - and three, they all have been products of a positive upbringing – challenged and supported by their parents but not in an over-nurturing manner. They are mature and very coachable, and for these reasons, they make my job way easier.”

n January, a quaint little café with a picturesque inlet frontage opened its doors to the public for the first time in months and, once again, both meatheads and masseuses alike were once again free to get their caffeine fix.

Collegetown Bagels, the venerable local eatery, opened a new location in a former café within the Island Health and Fitness facility last month filling a gap that, since the building opened, was always home to an eatery.

The spot, which features f loor-toceiling windows overlooking the inlet and a (usually) sun-lit patio used to be home to The Inlet Island Café, a small but well-liked eatery specializing in proteininfused smoothies, made from scratch soups and some of the best chocolate chip cookies you’ll ever have.

t’s a quiet Saturday afternoon when Anton Burkett, founder of CSA giant Early Morning Farms, walks into the Ithaca Farmer’s Market, his hands empty.

Normally the man behind the table, Burkett today is looking to buy. He’d already picked up the essentials – Rutabegas from Blue Heron Farm that morning, an order from Sweetland the day before, carrots from Crooked Carrot and some quality noodles via Macedon’s Flour City Pasta – but still found himself lacking leeks and his first purchase of the day: kale, about seven lbs. of it.

The purchase wasn’t for his own table.

Instead, Burkett was at work assembling the components for a shippable box of locallygrown produce and goods, the product of his newest venture: Gre en fork , a locally-focused recipe delivery service where all the suppliers are based in the Fingerlakes.

Very similar to the business model of well-known recipe services like Blue Apron or Plated, Greenfork – which had its soft launch six months ago – specializes in the assembly and delivery of pre-portioned, pre-packaged recipes that take all the legwork out of assembling a quality meal with fresh ingredients. Where the company is different is in its function and focus in that, rather than working with large suppliers and shipping a universal product, Greenfork provides a resource and outlet for local farms to sell their product to a broader consumer base: focusing on local providers the company – excluding Long Island – can accomplish one-day shipments out of Groton’s Fingerlakes Fresh Food Hub to a significant share of New York State as well as most of Connecticut, northern New Jersey and Pennsylvania and the western parts Massachusetts and Vermont.

The idea is that, working and focusing regionally, Greenfork can grow as a regional player and rather than swinging for the fences and attempting to compete with the growing recipe delivery market, the company can create a model that can be replicated in other cities and provide

a platform for different regions with each box they deliver representing the local tastes and produce that area provides. For instance, if you order a box of recipes in Ithaca, you could expect to find meats from the Piggery and mushrooms from Blue Oyster Cultivator while, if you order in Portland, Maine for example, you may get a box that is more fish-heavy with growers from Maine. With each region, you would have a different recipe penned by Early Morning Farms’ enviable roster of chefs (on top of marketing director Tracy McEvilly’s recipes, the cuisine will be supplemented with the likes of chefs like Emma Frisch and Grubbi Grox’s Sean O’Brien) that corresponds with the area’s cuisine.

By doing this and focusing small, Burkett said, he could ensure quality as well as take an approach that offers a stark contrast to the many venture-capital supported operations currently occupying the market.

“Our mission was to focus on just a one-day ship – that keeps our packaging down – and then we’ll build a system we can replicate headquartered in Ithaca where we can keep a database of local, seasonal recipes with local producers,” Burkett said.

“Once that’s set and we’re making a profit, we might move to a different fulfillment center in a different region and do the same thing again.”

Under trial for half a year now, the company is currently shipping 40 boxes a week and have just begun promoting itself, aiming to reach 200 boxes a week by the end of the summer. If Green Fork grows, the theory is the farms it is supplied by can grow with it to respond to the needs of the market, however when your suppliers are small local farmers, there is the aversion to growing too quickly and outpacing their local suppliers.

This approach, while lower yield, Burkett said, could make for a more sustainable platform for regional markets than the national companies that have generated so much buzz in the past several years. With a market so wide-open and ripe for the taking, the question is this: why hasn’t anyone tried this yet?

“Quite frankly, there’s less money in it,” Burkett said. “We’re taking a lower approach as far as profit goes and we can: they’re pushed by venture capitalists that want to maximize their profits as much as possible. We’re just a bootstrap startup – we borrowed money from friends and family, mortgaged our houses… we’re still starting up but I think we’re pushing $150,000. It’s still pretty doable for a middle class risk.”

Business Briefs Nominations Sought For Tompkins Trust Company’s Volunteer Awards

ominations are now being accepted for Tompkins Trust Company’s 2017 James J. Byrnes Awards for Excellence, an annual program that recognizes outstanding individuals and volunteer-based non-profit organizations for their contributions in Tompkins County.

Hickey’s Music Center Honored with NAMM Milestone Award for 125 Years of Service in the Music Products Industry

t the 2017 NAMM Show, Hickey’s Music Center of Ithaca, NY was honored with the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Milestone Award for 125 years of service in the music products industry. Presented annually by NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond, the Milestone Award recognizes music businesses that have flourished through changing business environments to reach a noteworthy anniversary.

“We’re pleased to have been able to continue the legacy started by Joseph Hickey back in 1892.” said David Zimet, co-owner of Hickey’s Music of Ithaca, NY. Joseph Hickey who worked as a clerk in a candy shop was taught to play by his sister and went into the music business opening a shop that specialized in guitars, mandolins and banjos. Through the years the focus adapted to reflect changing markets and technologies. Some 100 years after it was founded, Hickey’s became one of the first print music stores on the web. Cornell Receives Numerous Grants For Manufacturing Initiatives

uzeHub, a not-for-profit organization responsible for assisting small to medium-sized manufacturing companies (SMEs) in New York State by matching them with technical and business resources.

The Manufacturing Innovation Fund, consisting of $1 million annually for five years, supports a set of activities designed to spur technology development and

commercialization across New York State.

FuzeHub is administering this fund as part of its role as the Empire State Development (ESD)-designated statewide MEP center.

Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR) and Professor Yong Joo of Cornell University’s School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering are working with IdealChain, a spinoff of Buckingham Manufacturing, who manufactures safety products (harnesses, rescue systems, etc.), to develop and build a bench-scale multinozzle Air-Controlled (AC) electrospray system for encapsulation of dyes, to use as stress indicators in safety products. The resulting roll-to-roll electrospray system will be used by IdealChain to fabricate stress-indicating fibers and patches for safety equipment, helping the user to determine when to safely retire their equipment. The manufacturing technology originally developed through the CCMR Industrial Partnerships Program between the Joo Group and Buckingham Manufacturing not only has a large impact on the safety industry, but also wide-ranging ramifications for the fragrance, food, drug delivery and self-healing material industries. Additionally, this project will help IdealChain add 10 new jobs in the next two years.

The Cornell Nanoscale Science & Technology Facility received $75,000 to partner with Xallent LLC to develop a next generation diagnostic tool to more rapidly and economically test and characterize semiconductor devices and thin film materials during manufacturing. This tool is built on Xallent’s innovative nanoscale imaging and probing technology.

The ability to rapidly probe and measure electrical components at the nanoscale for diagnostics and failure analysis non-destructively is expected to tap a broad range of industry applications. The Manufacturing Innovation Grant will be used to adapt Xallent’s nanomachine platforms to analytical instruments at the Cornell NanoScale Facility for validation, user interface focus, and reliability studies to ready the company for product launch and scale up.

Additionally, this project will help Xallent add 8 new jobs by the end of 2019. ( Cornell University researchers and VitaScan received $75,000 to develop the VitaScan diagnostics platform: a low cost and portable instrument that can determine micronutrient deficiencies including vitamin D and iron from a finger stick of blood. A key innovation that makes this possible is the design and manufacturing of a proprietary lateral flow assay that combines blood filtration, chemical mixing, and capture of antibodies into one rapid process. Cornell and VitaScan will together develop a medium-scale manufacturing and packaging process to optimize the procedure and create reliable tests for validation studies. VitaScan will pursue the manufacturing strategy in preparation for commercialization, and plans to create 10 new jobs in the next two years.

Dawes rocks out in their own way

An Evening with Dawes 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, State Theatre

T

he lineup of a classic rock band and a style that tells stories across different sounds: Dawes mixes up and scrambles the music scene with its style.

Based out of Los Angeles, the band embodies the California aesthetic of dreamy with a twinge of melancholy. Each song tells a story, animating characters with harmonies and guitar chords. Their tracks embody the feelings of Joan Didion novels, evoking a sense of escapism coupled with anxiety — and of course, California.

And what rounds out the sense of escapism is the simplicity of the band. Brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith on guitars/vocals and drums, respectively; Wylie Gelber on bass; and Lee Pardini on keyboard — a classic rock setup, without the classic sound. Dawes takes ordinary music and morphs it.

“For us, we always consider ourselves a rock ‘n’ roll band, in the context of the classic sense,” Gelber said. “Everyone kind of finds their individual inspiration and kind of applies it to their craft and their instrument. Then we kind of mash up all of that at once, which creates our dynamic.”

The band evolved out of Simon Dawes, which had members Taylor, Griffin and Wylie.

Simon Dawes released one album and a few EPs in 2005 and 2006 before parts of the band split from one another. In 2009, Dawes became its own band, harboring its own sound and artistic charm independent from Simon Dawes. Since the breakup, Dawes has released five albums,

each with an individual sound that stems from the roots of Simon Dawes.

North Hills, the band’s first album, was recorded entirely on two-inch analogue, embodying folk and rock sounds with the complements of raw spirit. It transcends traditional rock, pouring out soul and lyrics that speak to each listener. They’re campfire songs, warm and homely with a pinch of pensiveness.

The latest album, We’re All Gonna Die, steps farther away from the campfire sound. It’s more complete, telling stories with less folk and more grit both in lyrics and in instrumentation. This combination and evolution in sound stems from collaborative writing. While Taylor creates the skeletons to most of the songs, the final products are an effort across the entire band.

“As far as song writing goes, Taylor is an avid reader; he’s reading something all the time,” Gelber said. “Musically we’re all huge music listeners, and we’re constantly trying to find more music that we haven’t heard. … I might be on a kick where I’m looking for a super spiritual record because the bass playing is really good, or maybe I’m on a jazz kick because the drummer is amazing.”

And when each band member can look around and know each song sounds complete — the writing process is done.

“We’ve had moments when everyone except for one person would feel differently,” Gelber said. “Then we’ll kind of just pick apart the song and finding out what needs to change or what stays the same, even though you might think you love how it’s sounding. Sometimes you might need to trash the whole thing and start from scratch, which can oftentimes help.”

And the wealth of innovation continues as

Dawes released their first live album Feb. 13, titled We’re All Gonna Live. Though a soft release — it’s available for streaming with no physical copies — Dawes sees it as a model for future endeavors.

We’re All Gonna Live features recordings from the first four days of Dawes’ current tour.

The songs were recorded, the band returned home for a short break, then continued the tour.

In the meantime, the album was mixed and mastered in only 15 days.

“It was wild,” Gelber said on recording We’re All Gonna Live. “When we started playing [the new songs] live, we understood that they worked together in a set as one; they’re not like crazy black-and-white differences. … You can kind of hear how the old [songs] progressed and the new ones find their way into the catalogue.”

The band plans to release more live albums in the future with We’re All Gonna Live serving as a test run for new albums to come.

And what makes Dawes’ shows stand out against others is their challenge to play every recorded Dawes song throughout the tour. The band does not have an opener for this tour, which Gelber said makes it easier to experiment with a longer setlist. Dawes has more versatility without an opener, and the band plays about 20 songs with an intermission.

With We’re All Gonna Live is a preview for the future of the band, Gelber said there’s more for fans to look forward to after the tour.

“We’re always trying to get more songs together as best we can,” Gelber said. “We can put records out pretty quickly, so we’re definitely looking forward to recording the next one. I can’t say when it is, but songs are being written as we speak, and we’re getting close every day.” • Th e

hen bands come out with a new album, they tend to promote it by going on tour with it. For chefs, those options are limited. They’re often married to their restaurants and their

reputation, their menus forever defined by their reviews.

But when the menu only lasts one night, like local chef Daniel Medina is planning for the Carriage House Café on March 15, none of that gets factored into the occasion.

That evening Medina, a seasoned chef with stints in Austin and Park City, Utah under his belt, will be taking over the loft of

the restaurant to host a unique, five course meal entitled “NorthFolk,” emphasizing not only the artistic side of his cooking, but appealing to the intimate experience of a well-orchestrated, minutely-tuned dinner service.

That Wednesday, Medina will unleash this philosophy on four tables at a time, all set to rotate courses every 15 minutes from a delectable and unique menu of his design. With little reputation or knowledge of his cuisine, this type of experience requires a large degree of trust from the diner: they have no reviews to go off of, no loyal clientele to rely on years of opinions and reviews. The menu, he said, he considers “cold weather food,” created solely from ingredients local to the coldest reaches of New York State. The goal is to provide a frame of reference to what regional cuisine could mean, to bring the sort of context to his cuisine as shrimp and grits or jambalaya has down south.

“We’re trying to think about what our ancestors, what the people who settled here before the industrial revolution would have cooked,” Medina said. “What they would have had to eat, what they would have done for fine dining if they ran out of ingredients in the middle of January. That idea has always interested me.”

To see this out, Medina has written two menus: a meat-based one and a vegetarian offering. Each starts off similar to the way an effective setlist might; kicking off the meal with an exciting opener followed by a rustic offering, flowing through the following courses to a sweet conclusion.

The food is intelligently-sourced, representative of both the season and the region to accurately reflect his vision of what regional cuisine could be. He works with some unique ingredients, using standbys like smoked beef and mushrooms as a garnish, rather than a central player in the dish, to incorporate the flavor while introducing new, unique textures to accompany the aromatic experience.

For meat eaters, the meal begins with a doughnut, topped with a rich foie gras, a sweet, black garlic and a smoked maple butter harkening back to the traditional method of wood-firing maple syrup. Next up is a trout, served with cream cheese and charred apple within a French soup, interestingly fomented with green onions and a honey-brewed riesling that adds a peculiar tartness to the sweet and creamy concoction. This is followed up with a quail, stuffed with waffle and topped with a maple glaze alongside a squash butter leading up to Medina’s take on an apple pie, flash-cooked, topped with cheese and served alongside potato chips.

Strand of Oaks forges their best record yet T HE H ORROR . . . T HE H ORROR . . . .

ver the phone from Europe last week, Strand of Oaks front man and founder Timothy Showalter was in an epically good mood. His band had just finished sound check for their Brighton, UK gig, and Showalter was infectiously psyched.

“We’ve been over here for about a week-and-a-half and everything is just fantastic,” he notes, happily. “We’ve been really stretching stuff out and experimenting with our sets, getting real psychedelic.

I think as a musician playing the same s*** every night becomes insanely boring. I mean you can just buy the record if that’s

what you want to hear. It’s cheaper. People come out to have an experience. And we as musicians, are here to have an experience as well.”

Showalter is a special artist. A guy who creates with a rigorous honesty that is contagious, varied and real. His band’s newest record Hard Love is a lush and quickening masterpiece. With edges that smoke, patterns that haze and an experimental depth that is all out wicked, it’s Strand of Oak’s best record yet. The sort of album you drink to, think to, and live to. Showalter is at his apex here, and Hard Love is the soundtrack of his reverence.

“It really feels fresh,” he said. “I’m super happy with how it all came out and really exciting to bring these songs to the people.

In a lot of way my goal is to create music that is closer to who I am as a person, and I think this record really achieves that.

I mean the last album’s [HEAL] cover showed a dude who was looking real sad.

And I’m not sad; I mean I feel sad sometimes sure, but I’m a guy who likes to have a good time. And even the cover of this new record is closer to who I really am. I think it was like seven in the morning when it was shot, and I was drinking some avocado

margarita after a long night (laughs).”

Hard Love showcases a mind totally in love with music; and this is Showalter’s unique expression. There’s really no one like him. He wears his influences and inspirations on his sleeve, and this is how he can position his music so extended and infinite.

It’s his appreciation and love for his connection to music, and the honesty that flows through it, which directs the ascension of every song he writes.

“Music f****** saved my life,” Showalter admitted. “I get frustrated with bands that seemingly live in this creative bubble.

They sound like Pink Floyd but say they’ve never heard of them, like they’re so unique.

I feel indebted to acknowledge my influences. Modern Lovers, Jeff Buckley, Jane’s

Addiction, all these bands were so vital to my existence. The whole process is like a love ritual really.”

Hard Love showcases all those grand influences in beautiful and mesmerizing ways. It’s a transcendent work: vivid, wild and free. On a song like the psychedelic floater “Taking Acid and Talking to My Brother”, you can directly experience this expansion. An epic with wild extensions, the song drifts like sand through the hands of infinity: stretching and tingling like a dream.

“I was so proud of that song,” Showalter beamed. “There was no plan for it. We just started slow and went for it. I think I started to stop playing around the fourminute mark and Jason [Anderson] just looked at me and said ‘this isn’t over yet.’

The song has such a visceral feel to it and the way we pulled it off is just really cool.

The whole record was made real loose. It was just the whole band totally together and working as one.”

Strand of Oaks is one of the coolest and realest bands out there. You just melt away to pureness listening to their music. •

One Last Trip to Hal’s

Hal’s has been an Ithaca staple for decades

By Peg g y Haine Editor’s Note: After 56 years, we have learned the venerable local delicatessen, Hal’s, is closing down in May. Because we would be loathe to allow people to miss out on the end of this landmark institution, we will run our review of the restaurant one more time.

W

hen I arrived in Ithaca from Brooklyn, years before that refuge for the huddled masses yearning to breathe free became hip, I WAS the wretched refuse, a lost blue-collar kid at an Ivy League school, where kids had their own fur coats, brought from homes where they didn’t have to share a room with anybody and had live-in maids.

Did people really live like this? LOST! I was lost. For consolation I drifted down State Street’s then-yellow-brick road for lunches at Hal’s, the New York-style deli that had also just arrived in Ithaca. There I could console myself with a potato knish, a hunk of kishke (a section of a cow’s large intestine filled with don’t-ask-what), or a big fat “special,” a hearty kosher hotdog that would give six inches of kielbasa a

garlicky run for its money. The menu was printed on paper cut in the shape of a loaf of Jewish rye. The owners were welcoming.

It felt like home.

The original Hal’s stood next to the previous Greyhound bus terminal, across from what is now the Commons’ east end home of the Trebloc Building. When those structures were urban-renewed (destroyed, along with far too much of Ithaca’s architectural history) the Kuntz family relocated the deli to a central spot on Aurora Street. Its other next-door neighbor, the Asiatic Garden, moved to West State Street, and is now long gone.

If you wanted “fancy food” you dined at the Ithaca Hotel’s Dutch Kitchen. The Commons was just a gleam in Mayor Ed Conley’s eye, and traffic still flowed up and down State Street.

As you have probably assumed, lunch there brought back memories.

Though it was destroyed by fire in 1977, reconstructed, and re-opened, the place hasn’t changed much since 1971 when it moved to Aurora Street. Dark wainscoting and a dark-paneled back wall make for

a long but cozy den, with lightcolored walls reminiscent of formica countertops above the wainscoting. Gone from the menu are the kishke and the “specials,” but you can still get cheese blintzes and sour cream, a chopped liver sandwich, crunchy little potato pancakes served with apple sauce, and to wash it all down, Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray. Some fancy-pants mixologist really ought to run with that not-toosweet celery-flavored soda.

Despite the day’s cruelly chilling wind, the welcome at Hal’s was warm: Hal’s daughter Jacky buzzed about cheerfully greeting customers, taking orders, and checking to see that everyone was happy; his son Mike worked the register and took luncheon delivery orders; at the front window, Hal’s widow Sandy reigned over the books and absorbed a little sunshine, which she reflected into the shop.

Behind us, two gentlemen in suits (Attorneys? Financial advisors? Insurance solicitors?) ripped through the latest episodes of Downton Abbey critiquing actors and plots. Across the way a six-top of lively, casually dressed young women compared privileged childhoods.

The food: Hal’s is known for its sandwiches, which seem relatively inexpensive, the dearest of them weighing in under eight bucks, and ranging from peanut butter to unusual-combination triple deckers, many named after local characters and sports teams. A salami

sandwich on fresh rye was packed with meat and yearning to be slathered with mustard. Cole slaw was just damp enough, slightly sweet, and crunchy.

The Reuben sandwich (corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing, all of it griddled to gooeyness between slices of rye) is about the best one you can get in these parts. The halfdollar-size potato latkes were well spiced and crisp, and would make great hors d’oeuvres topped with dab of sour cream, a bit of lox, and a caper or two. Good thing they cater. Of course, the Cel-Ray brought back memories. And the warm welcome is perennially comforting.

At breakfast, Hal’s early riser regulars gather around the bar, chatting with their server and proffering cups for coffee refills.

Pseudocide and its Effects

Elizabeth Greenwood writes on faking one’s death

aking one’s death, or pseudocide, is treated as a fantastical solution when one finds oneself in a tight bind; the ultimate act in escapism and confrontation avoidance. Depicted in film and literature as frequently the necessary way out and not involving great complications, like in more than one Dave Franco movie, the public is commonly misguided on what it actually demands. In Playing Dead, author Elizabeth Greenwood – a former resident of Ithaca and Ithaca’s Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts – entertainingly explores the complex but legal nature of effectively faking one’s death through interviews with experts and those who have now metaphorically risen from their own faked deaths.

Because it’s not just driving one’s car off a bridge and swimming away in Goa, India, as Jason Bourne would like you to believe.

Elizabeth Greenwood explores the plethora of facets to faking one’s death, from the steps involved to the type of individuals that actually go through with it. She first speaks to Frank Ahearn, a self-labeled “world’s top expert” on disappearing in the modern digital age, who transitioned from finding people as a skip tracer to helping others shrug their identities and connections as a ‘privacy consultant’. According to Ahearn “Disappearing makes you infinite…If you disappear, people will always talk about you.” Seeing the appeal of the practice, he turned it into a science and – more benefiting – a business.

After speaking with Ahearn, Greenwood continues to speak to professionals to understand every possible element of voluntary disappearance, with wit and an attention to detail. Steve Rambam, an elite private investigator regularly contracted by life insurance companies, is one of the more interesting character she speaks to, as his brusque and stubborn nature make him easy to picture even with the lack of visual description by Greenwood. But

similarly to Ahearn, although unsurprising due to his profession, Rambam discourages civilians from faking their deaths. “You have to be devoted to staying disappeared like it’s your job,” he says. “It takes a lot of effort and aggravation.” Although Ahearn helps individuals to disappear, and Rambam works to find them, they both hold the same opinion on faking one’s death: it’s demanding, almost impossibly complex and simply, wrong. So Greenwood moves on to individuals who have disappeared or faked their own deaths, not just those who watch them do it.

Greenwood turns to John Darwin or, as he is more commonly known, “The Canoe Man,” to get a look into the mindset of an individual that would actually go through with what most people only dream of. As a middle-aged man, The Canoe Man represents the statistically most common death faker, as observed by Greenwood.

“I noticed that they all seemed to feel emasculated, made impotent, by their mundane lives,” she writes. “So, not earning enough money, they invest in a harebrained scheme…Faking death seems to be not only a way out but also, counterintuitively, a way to be brave.”

John Darwin’s decision to escape his life seems completely ridiculous and absurd, or it does until Greenwood introduces readers to ‘The Believers’.

‘The Believers’ aren’t thoroughly reviewed by Greenwood but are instead examined through one of their most

outspoken and zealous members, Pearl Jr. With a defensive name like ‘The Believers,’ their being can already be predicted to be eccentric and bizarre; no legitimate organization admits to the existence of dissenters in its title.

Armed with what she perceives to be Easter eggs left by Michael Jackson following his demise but – from an external perspective – seem to be a strain of coincidental details, Pearl Jr. dedicates a large portion of her life to publicizing and examining the alleged pseudocide of the King of Pop. Greenwood examines how the phenomena of death faking becomes an unhealthy source of paradoxically mental and physical health for Michael Jackson fans. In contrast, she successively examines those who became ‘collateral damage’ of the pseudocides of others; the individuals who did not get to

be the ones the to escape, but were the ones left behind. The journey through individuals who industrialize pseudocide, those who do it, those who use it a coping mechanism to those hurt by it is both grounding and disturbing. A decision that at first, appears cold and corrupt by the end of the novel.

Greenwood completes the thorough and humorous examination of faked deaths by doing it herself in a limited and minimal fashion, only going so far as getting a falsified death certificate made in her name. While her own attempt at a faked death is disappointing and pointless, fabricated clerical work doesn’t really keep one up at night, her exploration of pseudocide is anything but. With few facets of disappearing and faked deaths unexamined, Greenwood leaves readers with an understanding, but a definite distaste, for the art of vanishing. •

eryl Streep has been making great movies since I first started getting serious about them, and she’s my hero for speaking to power during her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, but I must confess that I found Florence Foster Jenkins… just okay.

This was one year where I thought, “Let’s give Best Actress to someone who doesn’t have one.” For my money, Hugh Grant as Jenkins’ ne’er-do-well husband and Simon Helberg as her comically conflicted accompanist really steal Stephen Frear’s film.

I’m a Seth Rogen fan, but Neighbors and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising are the worst flicks he’s ever been attached to. I actually felt badly for Rose Byrne, slumming it with Rogen as a childish, moronic married couple, dressing up all the usual clichés with lots of weed and filth. These are the kind of movies that would be 15 minutes long if everyone in the movie weren’t awful, venal idiots. The sequel is the worst thing Chloe Grace Moretz has done.

Melissa McCarthy is killing it as Sean Spicer on SNL, but I wasn’t too thrilled with The Boss. McCarthy is set up as a corrupt Martha Stewart-type whose abrasive armor is the result of being a

repeat adoptive reject as a child, but when the movie ends with her in a martial arts battle with Peter Dinklage, you wonder how much you’re supposed to be invested in the story. And as for Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, see my thoughts on those Neighbors movies. Only one line made me laugh out loud: “You’re a smart guy. You read most of the Goosebumps books!”

The photograph of Elvis Presley posing in the Oval Office with Richard Nixon is the most requested item in the US National Archives: more popular than the photos of the moon landing, the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. In fact, Elvis and Nixon, a recent film starring Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey as Presley and Nixon, is the second movie on the subject: the first was Elvis Meets Nixon, a 1997 film directed by Allan Arkush (Rock N’ Roll High School), starring Rick Peter as Presley and Bob Gunton as Nixon. The Shannon-Spacey version plays up Nixon’s dismissive contempt for Elvis the Pelvis, and has a good supporting cast that includes Colin Hanks, Alex Pettyfer and Johnny Knoxville.

If there were any doubts that Mike Birbiglia is a major actor and filmmaker after Sleepwalk With Me, his sophomore comedy Don’t Think Twice quells them.

Birbiglia is a wounded wonder of an established but struggling NYC improv group.

He’s been passed over by an SNL-esque late night sketch show, helplessly watching other cast members grab that brass ring.

The latest grabee is played by Keegan Michael Key, and the rest of the troupe – are their improvs scripted or true improv – are ably played by some of my favorite clowns: Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher and scene-stealer Chris Gethard. Best of all, the film opens with a concise and funny prologue explaining the art and guidelines – hence the title - of improvisational comedy, including some welcome vintage clips from early incarnations of Second City.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Lily Tomlin some time back, and I much prefer the dark, Altman-esque and episodic dark comedy Grandma over Grace and Frankie, her Netflix show with Jane Fonda.

As Tomln’s lesbian grammy Elle helps her granddaughter Sage (Julia Garner) look for money for an abortion, Paul Weitz’s film introduces us to many funny, funky characters played by the likes of Marcia Gay Harden, Judy Greer, Laverne Cox and Sam Elliott. •

The Poetry of Life and Death Mary Blaise Turgeon blazes strong in new exhibit

eep within the mysteries of life, the poetic experience is like a soft rain dripping down your finger, onto the ground, and through to its next destination. When words can be transformed into images, they become infinite; and a lifetime is but a series of guesses, skulls, and the dynamic rearrangement of birth. The soft rain is your dream, and also your entirety. The graphic artist Mary Blaise Turgeon showcases a poignant hymn to this ultimate process this month at Buffalo Street Books.

Resurrection features 17 connected illustrations entitled The Riddle of Eyes.

Each individual work is delicate, dark, framed in glass and perfect in an honest and airy sort of way. There’s a deep story here, something beyond the cosmos, and the artist’s soft touch illuminates a denser reading. “I am the mystery—I am furthermore, the doubt—I am eternally encouraging you…to find out,” states illustration (1). (Note, for our purposes, we’ll tag the illustrations (1) though (17), left to right. Turgeon suggests that the entire show can be read circular, where last can be first, and first can be last). In (2), a human skeleton with six arms and six legs is the Buddha: the causeway to eternity.

It beckons you on a journey. The drawing is a taught balance of shade and dreams: wondrously hanging and pulling.

(3) The dreamer becomes the dream, as the skeleton shows us a portal to the world of intimacy and nu-magna. There’s a constant swirl that Turgeon plays with throughout each conjoined drawing, creating movement and wonder. The skeleton locks hold of the new dimension as if admiring a special egg, and we are off.

(4) The egg is birth and highlights the direction or redirection of our journey.

Turgeon’s detail is admirable. The darkness is flush and scraps like ice against the white light. (5) We meet a narrator: a magna inspired cherubic form, like a magical sorceress with dense clothing and universal implications. She is our communication. And is everyone’s. (6) Three totems: figures that are cat and humanlike, and also blank, as if suggesting the perpetual insignificance of the self. The figures are also symbolic, each with large dog chains around their wrists and phantom bouquets hovering close by.

(7) The figures come closer for a chat.

Skeletal hands are present, a part of the infinite and also of the figures. Representation becomes paramount. The figure’s faces are intimate, plain and deeply complex. There’s something tribal and psychological at work here. (8) A figure transcends the universe. Turgeon’s detail is mesmerizing. Little bits of ink craft are superimposed to create a giant whirlwind.

The figure in white is both trapped by experience and welcomed into eternity.

The original 1929 Finnish silent classic “Mustalaishurmaaja” will be shown in its entirety, set to music by a special live organ performance by Ithaca native and organ master, Kent “Aarne” Washburn. Washburn studied organ with concert organist David Jackson of Spencer, and became the fulltime organist at Danby Federated Methodist Church in 1994. He’s moved around since then and continues today, to push the boundaries of organ driven music.

ome artists exist as dimensions of absolute clarity: pathways of a defined absolution. Canadian blues guitarist and singer songwriter Matt Anderson is one such totality. The guy is a complete and shimmering blues machine, particularly remarkable at carry full and wholly realized songs all by his lonesome.

“Style-wise, I’m really fond of the old delta stuff,” he noted. “Guys who could carry the bassline and the lead like Lead Belly and Howlin Wolf.”

Listening to Anderson’s solo material is like entering directly into his soul: all substantial and immense. He’s got a deep and resourceful honesty that is refreshing and expansive. His technical chops equally as deft as his soulful circuitry. Anderson started out as solo prodigy and still excels most directly as such.

“I’m definitely more comfortable playing solo,” Anderson admitted. “But working with other musicians in a band setting has really stretched my songwriting. My old songs were always about me, almost
