I

t seems like 2017, more so than any other year in the City of Ithaca, has become one of outcry. The city even has the data to prove it.

While Ithaca, with its completed Commons and numerous enthusiastic organizations scattered throughout town, has had quite a bit of demand for special events requiring special permitting since 2015. In terms of Special Events (defined by the city as an event requiring three or more permits to happen), two years ago, the city received 46 applications from groups looking to have an event approved by the city: 41 eventually passed. The following year, 56 applications were received, with 16 of those applications either withdrawn, denied, or not requiring a special event permit to take place at the end of it.

But 2017 – the year of Trump – has seen quite a f lurry of activity within the city clerk’s office. Within the first 85 days of the year, the city has already received 26 applications for special events in the city. 20 of those have been seen through.

Quite a few, thus far, have been politically related.

“It’s a new trend we’re seeing,” said Julie Conley Holcomb, an employee of City Hall more than 25 years. “All of our ‘favorites’ that come through year af ter year, the annual stuff like Ithaca Festival, the Apple Harvest Festival, Tough Turtle, Wizarding Weekend now, all those types of things… the newer trend are these more politically-motivated events.

We’ve seen two women’s marches, we have ‘Believe In Love,’ coming up, the trans rights event… these are all new. It’s not surprising, but these have turned out to be large events.

n a cold Friday morning under a bridge in Newfield, a group of men waded through a rushing stream in the pouring rain seeking to catch themselves some fugitives: about 150 rainbow trout which had escaped from a fishway about two miles upstream.

The men – workers with the Department of Environmental Conservation’s fisheries division – had a quota to meet, trudging slowly up the stream looking to collect 150 rainbow trout by day’s end and return them to the fishway, a vital spawning point on the Cayuga Inlet for the region’s rich population of trout. Typically, this important junction of the fishery’s ecosystem would be home to anywhere between 200 to 700 trout, the population usually falling somewhere around 400 or so in number. This year, however, was something of an anomaly: according to Dave Lemon, fisheries manager for the DEC, there were less than 100 fish total in the fishway.

This is significant because, in recent years, trout populations in Cayuga Lake have had difficulty sustaining themselves. Where 30 years ago, 60 to 70 percent of all fish in the stream were wild, today just about 30 to 40 percent are, adding significance to the importance of the DEC and its fish breeding operations: in the fishway, the fish can spawn and the eggs can be collected in one place for their delivery to the fishery out in Bath, the fish then escaping the trap in the warmer weather.

with nets, buckets and an interesting tool – an electrofisher – to return the fish to where they belonged. Wafting a wand running a mild DC electric current through the water, workers from the DEC would stun the more than two-foot long fish in the water, collecting them with a net and placing them into buckets, carrying the docile chordates to a small tank in the back of a pickup truck. As of 10 a.m., they had around 30 fish in the truck and were ready to set out further up the creek to continue working toward that magic number: 100 females and 50 males.

“We’re going to get what we can get,” Lemon said. “We need at least 50 females for a healthy spawn. We’re not going to meet our quota if we only get 50, but we’re gonna get what we’re gonna get.”

The strange part of all this, Lemon said, is that this is something the DEC has never had to do in the 42 years it has been responsible for the fishway.

“To get our allotment for this year, this is something we need to do,” Lemon said. “This is the first time we’ve ever done this.”

The reason is not tied to a snoozing guard or a daring escape by the fish themselves but rather, nature itself. The f ishway, nor ma l ly, is kept enclosed by a dam that peaks four feet above the waterline, a height which during the winter is far above the height a typical trout can jump. However, this wasn’t an ordinary winter and with numerous warm weather days, the natural order was disrupted.

es, Lemon said, are triggered by the weather itself: once water temperature crests above 40 degrees, he said, a hormone is activated within the fish, giving it the power to jump from at least four feet to even six feet in height, if the pool is deep enough. With inconsistent hot and cold f lashes this season, not only were air temperatures inconsistent but the ebb and flow of snowpack and runoff from the melts caused huge fluctuations in the water temperature, eliciting varied spawn dates for these trout to fight their way upstream and attempt to lay eggs.

This had been going on for a while, Lemon said. While the Trout typically don’t leave the fishway until mid-March, by late January some fish had already made it to the river crossing at VanBuskirk Road: five miles upstream.

The fish are still laying eggs in the stream and some have even hatched, one of Lemon’s workers pulling a recent hatchling from the stream before releasing it back into the wild, doubtless proof that other fish had probably hatched as well, albeit early.

Even though it’s odd, the changes may not actually be the worst thing for the ecosystem.

“It’s actually advantageous, from a natural standpoint,” Lemon said. “You don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket.”

events happening in places like Washington, D.C.” But Holcomb said t hose looking to have a protest, demonstrate or some other perform some form of dissent on city property need to find out it takes more than a few likeminded people and a Facebook event (the way, Holcomb said, the city had discovered a number of these events) to make it all happen. Unfortunately for the bureaucracy, social media has managed to change the very way the special event permitting process has happened. Viral hits like Wizarding Weekend and the Women’s March on Ithaca – which both drew thousands upon the city within a ridiculously short window to prepare – have also necessitated the need for quick turnaround on the city’s part to ensure the safety and maximized convenience of all involved, from shutting down city streets to ensuring enough police and firefighters are on call that day.

The three-step process, all told, is rather time-consuming.

Conley, the point person for all of the city’s special events, coordinates a team of approximately ten people from various city departments, the police department and the fire department to serve as a sort of one-stop-shop for the event’s organizers, who will be able to answer all the necessary questions to ensure all bases are covered once the time comes, from what streets need to be closed to what needs to be worked around, like for instance, a state road needing closure. (during the Women’s March, for instance, the city closed down Seneca Street with two TCAT buses over the course of two hours, which is technically illegal and with advanced notice, would otherwise have needed approval for a different route.)

While these things are difficult to accommodate, the city reminds people that the process is, in fact, automated, and urges people to try and contact officials as soon as possible through the online form available on the city’s website or – in urgent cases – as quickly as possible, by phone, in-person or wherever, so the city can know what to expect.

How The City Attracts Business

fter the closing of longtime downtown staple Now You’re Cooking on the Commons, the Downtown Ithaca Alliance said at a meeting last week they were currently looking for other kitchen supply stores to potentially fill that storefront.

Despite Now You’re Cooking’s struggles, the DIA believes there is still a path to success in that niche from the location, near the Cayuga Street side of the Commons. Now You’re Cooking had been open downtown for more than 30 years.

The process of filling a storefront is ever-changing, as local officials such as city Economic Development Director Philly DeSarno and DIA executive director Gary Ferguson comb through possible candidates and keep their ears open for other businesses that may be interested but also might need a bit of coaxing.

DeSarno, who will soon be leaving the government, said the process can take a variety of forms and paths. Often, members of the economic development arm of local government are constantly looking for businesses, even while just out on vacation, that might be a good fit for the area. That’s the most casual route, probably, but it has proven successful before.

In her experience, DeSarno said, she has found flexibility to be crucial on her end. There is no true formula of any kind; these things don’t happen at random, but they certainly aren’t strictly scripted out either. Usually they start with a general list of candidates who may fill a missing market option in the city, moving forward from there, but without restricting themselves.

If she winds up talking to an owner who is interested in expansion, or secondarily moving altogether, she can begin to maneuver the sales pitch of

Ithaca.

“It’s all over the map in how we do this,” she said. “I tend to just go in a great looking store, I end up buying stuff from them and talking to them, and then if I feel there’s interest in where I’m coming from, I might invite them to come visit if their store is something of interest and is something lacking in Ithaca.”

Of course, with development comes competition, an understandably uncomfortable reality for some local business owners.

DeSarno said she appreciates that apprehension, and always tries to first consult with the owners whose businesses theoretically might be affected by any new store coming in. She is looking primarily for businesses in the immediately surrounding area that might be able to make the jump to downtown Ithaca.

Fontana’s in Collegetown is the only option in the immediate area, but does not give quite the central location that the city would like. In cases like this, DeSarno would try to keep in contact with the owners of Fontana’s, attempting to balance their concerns with her job duties.

Ferguson confirmed the city is looking to advance its apparel options, with an eye to increasing the amount of women’s options around town—with an example being the recent opening of Willow on West State Street.

“We try to find what busi-

nesses are missing, and what businesses we’d like to have,” Ferguson said. “Of course, just because we want a business, doesn’t mean we get it, and just because we don’t want a business, doesn’t mean we don’t get it.”

Often times, the city and DIA look for stores in other parts of central New York that already have some established success, maybe a company with two or three locations that is looking to expand, which makes said expansion an easier move for the business. Sometimes that process isn’t linear—both Ferguson and DeSarno cited F. Oliver’s, a successful oil and vinegar shop on the Commons, as a prime example. When they stumbled upon that store, it was not even their initial target—they were on the hunt for a crepes restaurant in Canandaigua. It took city officials years and years to convince the owner, Penelope Pankow, to bring her company to Ithaca, but now that she has the business has proven up to the challenges of the area.

Ithaca is an attractive space for a commercial venture with its relatively high population for this region of New York and its mix of both young and old demographics. While that provides a vibrant environment for business success, there’s a downside to it as well. Storefront rental prices in the area can be quite high, which can make some companies skittish about making the move here.

The hardest part about the search, though, is that at the end it comes down to finding the select group of people who are willing to make the move, whose timing and ability matches up with the city’s opportunities and needs in a way that benefits both parties.

“Somet i mes people a re, sometimes they aren’t,” Ferguson said. “There are stores we would love to have come here, but for whatever reason the people aren’t interested in moving or doing more, so we respect that and move on.”

rogressives from across t he st ate gat hered at Binghamton High school on Sunday for the first New York Progressive Action Network state conference. The origins of this group have a not too distant past, stretching back to the 2016 presidential primary where the seeds of this movement were sowed by a certain senator for Vermont.

“Most of us were Bernie delegates and we met while working on the petition drive last January.” said Emily Adams, d i re c tor of t he Tompk i n s County Progressives and secretary of the NYPAN executive committee. “We stayed in touch as we were getting up to the convention in July and many of us met each other in person for the first time at the convention in Philadelphia.

That formally materialized for the first time over the weekend as progressives from Buffalo, Albany, Syracuse, Ithaca a nd ever y ot her nook a nd cranny of New York gathered to talk progressive political policy and how to promote it moving forward. “ There a re a nu mber of goals,” Adams said. “getting information out about single payer, getting information out about the environment and how that impacts the southern tier, but also really sort of a bonding moment a place to network and get your energy up a little bit because many people in the progressive communit y are feeling k ind of down right now.”

Adams also said NYPAN doubled its membership by approving 16 new affiliated groups, effectively doubling its membership to 32 member affiliates statewide.

While it doesn’t exactly call out off-campus housing for being unsafe or anything, it does “recognize landlords who are willing to go the extra mile when it comes to providing a safe residential environment for our students who live offcampus,” according to President Rawlings.

In Local Elections, Media Matters M edia matters when it comes to elections, especially local ones where people subscribe to their local publications. The registered voters we have are in the higher age range, as I’m sure you’ll find many places, folks who typically still read print media.

Young people move frequently making it difficult to keep up on when and where to vote as well as who is worth running for? So you have to go digital too.

Social media and digital print is also playing a role like never before. My campaign had a very heavy online presence and this is where we received more than half of our contributions. People in places outside our village were very responsive. People in the village were as well but didn’t want to make any enemies, especially since our party actually gaining seats was a bit of a long shot.

We got some press in the Cortland Standard. Most of the article was about the Hal McHabe Mayoral race in Homer. Then our section started out with one sentence about me. Very little meat to the story here, no mention of my reasons that I am a woman, a mother of two young children, and half-Jewish in the current political climate was the catalyst to run for Mayor, instead of Trustee.

He asked me my age. For what purpose, I’m not sure. When this reporter called me the

next day for a quote I said frankly I thought the article was biased and I didn’t have interest in speaking with him although I am proud of the campaign I ran. There was no mention of these incumbents running unopposed in the last few elections. Nor did they print the letter to the editor that someone wrote in support of me. As I was canvassing I knocked on the door of a registered Democrat who said she’s been reading about me. She didn’t seem to think I was qualified. After speaking for a while, I think she changed her mind but I believe this article may have influenced her opinion of me.

Groton has historically been closer to Cortland than Ithaca. Our Democratic chair said the Cortland Standard is a conservative paper when I asked why the coverage was this way.

The Ithaca Journal had no coverage of the election only a recap of the votes after the fact. They did print a letter to the editor though. The Groton Independent (owned by Fingerlakes Community Newspapers, which is an affiliate of The Ithaca Times) simply printed the answers to the five same questions to all the candidates despite me speaking with reporter Cassandra Negley on the phone at length. There was no feature-length article written on my campaign specifically. (Editor’s note: there wasn’t for the other candidate contin u ed on page 7

Shoveling

W

inter is over, but the chance of snowfall isn’t (it can snow here in May), so I’m going to do a favor for town and guarantee at least no more heavy snowfalls, by writing a column on what to do when they happen.

My belief is that, despite the logical threat of snow, this action will negate it, and you won’t actually need today’s advice until at least October.

If you are at all superstitious, as I patently am (through Irishness, though there are other routes), you know the best way to thwart a problem is to prepare for it. Bad things you are ready for are least likely to occur.

(Of course, this leaves the door open for a million other bad things you haven’t foreseen, but superstition can only do so much. After that you need Rosaries, or the comforts of dread. Those are different matters.)

This advice concerns shoveling.

To beat winter, you should have a few shovels - more than you need.

This lessens the chances of needing any at all.

Keep one in your vehicle and one by the front door. Keep another by the back door. If you don’t have a back door, keep two by the front.

On particularly daunting days, carry one with you, like an umbrella.

The more things you do to welcome a wild winter, the milder it will be.

A friend of mine showed this clearly years back when he moved here from Brooklyn. A city boy frightened by extreme north, as he considered Ithaca (halfway to Canada), he buffered his move by buying skis, ice skates, snow shoes, a toboggan (none of which he knew how to use), and practically every item sold by L.L. Bean. The only thing missing was a St. Bernard.

That winter proved the warmest on record. His friends decided he was the cause of climate change.

The severity of a winter season is determined officially by how many times you must dig out your car. By this measure, the current one has been pretty mild. My total, living downtown, is two.

The first was nothing, maybe a tenminute affair. The other, on March 14, was harsh, but I used it to gain pioneer knowledge.

It started snowing early, so by 8:30 a.m. I got out and shoveled. I moved the car to the street’s alternate side, as the city would require for the night. I wouldn’t be using the car that day.

By dusk, a lot more snow had fallen, and I wondered if it would help to clear it, or if that would be a waste of time, as a snow plow would come sooner or later and just bury the car again as if I’d done nothing.

It’s hard to believe that decades later Reed still follows the belief that trickle-down economics works for the people--it does work, but only for the wealthy that are given subsidies, cash, handouts. #TrickledOnEconomics When low income and middle class persons get a tax break, the money gets spent. When wealthy people get an unnecessary tax break, the money gets locked away and is not pumped into the economy. There is no trickledown. The people of the 23rd need to challenge Reed to rethink his vote on GOPCare to see that for many people in this district, it will have a NEGATIVE impact.

t’s a childlike fantasy that Democrats have been turning ever more liberal while Republicans have remained centrist. Republican leaders are now by and large for cutting environmental protections put in place by a Republican president 50 years ago (Nixon), funding increases for the Dept. of Education secured by a Republican president 15 years ago (Bush), and a health care plan largely based on one designed by a Republican candidate 10 years ago (Romney).

If you look at the voting records for overlapping Congressional sessions, each new class of Republican members since the early 80s has moved farther and farther away from the political center, while each new class of Demo-

The only way to know is to find out, I figured, so I dug. I finished before dark and went inside for the night.

In the morning, I looked out the window and saw my Volvo boxed in by plowed snow, a big berm of it, and figured my extra effort last night was in vain. Well, at least now I knew.

I went out to dig again, and found instead that my time was well spent.

My car was covered to the bottom of the door frames and bumpers. I thought that was bad until I looked down the street, and saw two cars plowed in to their windows.

Those two car owners were outside too, with shovels, but hadn’t started moving yet. It might have been despair. They were looking toward me and, perhaps, wondering why God loved me more than them.

It’s because God helps those who help themselves. And believe not just in Rosaries, but in avoiding them. And have not just faith, but superstition.

Elections are won by mobilizing non-voters, not by appealing to active centrist voters. The Tea Party saw enormous 2010 victories with hardline right-wing views that were entirely in line with the establishment Republican platform- tax cuts (including massive cuts at the top), lowered government spending, rollback of environmental regulations, and occasionally but not always establishment Republican views on social issues. Nothing about the movement was centrist in the least, but they saw massive success by mobilizing frustrated voters. Many of those seats came from Blue Dogs, whose centrism evidently did not help them.

The senate passed a bill, cosponsored by Senator O’Mara supporting an increase to the farm tax credit which seeks to provide relief to smaller family farms which have saw a 16 percent drop in production last year according to the legislation. The tax credit gives farmers a $500 tax credit for each employee they employ for more than 500 hours each year. This is double the current credit.

The senate and the assembly are poised to cut it very close in passing the 2017 budget by the set deadline of April 1.

A valid point in the March 1 editorial

I

n his March 1 editorial Nick Reynolds makes a valid point when he writes that the City of Ithaca has only itself to thank for the dilemma it faces with Maguire. I would like to make clear that I do not look favorably upon acres of asphalt covered with vehicles at Carpenter Park. But let’s look at the facts. When Maguire bought the property in 2015, according to the city’s recently approved Comprehensive Plan, it was designated as an Enterprise Zone, an area having “primarily industrial, office, and research and development uses and that are targeted for expansion of business and employment opportunities as well as particular residential uses.” Carpenter Park itself is described as having “great potential for business development and employment opportunities.”

Clearly Maguire’s planned use of this property fits well within the descriptions of an Enterprise Zone and the preferred development of Carpenter Park.

Creating the Comprehensive Plan began in 2011 and culminated in 2015 with its approval by Common Council. In that four year process, it seems strange that the city’s desire for Carpenter Park to actually be something other than an Enterprise Zone wasn’t made clear until some unwanted enterprise showed up.

The Waterloo of political battles engaged on capitol hill last week ending Friday afternoon in a victory for democrats and an embarrassment for Republicans who failed to muster a majority in the house to pass the manifestation of their promises to repeal and replace Obamacare. Congressman Reed was an original opponent of the American Health Care Act, but told reporters on his March 21 press call that he turned in favor of the bill with the addition of the Collins/Faso amendment. The amendment sought to require New York state to handle Medicaid funding on the state level and remove that tax burden from the counties. Prior to the AHCA vote on Friday, the house did however pass several other healthcare related bills including one prohibiting pharmaceutical companies from monopolizing the industry which passed with almost unanimous support.

The Ones Who Stuck Around

Years after Katrina, students from LACS continue to clean up.

t’s a hot, sweaty Sunday in the May sun hanging over the low-slung neighborhood of Gentilly, a racially diverse enclave of New Orleans located at the southwest tip of the destitute Ninth Ward. Pastor Bruce Davenport is speaking to an audience lining the folding-chair pews of the St. John No. 5 Baptist Church, a modest, converted house in faded whitewash and adorned with ivy.

It’s “Jesus’ Gym,” according to a sign in the building featuring a pair of flexing cartoon biceps.

The crowd is made up mostly of his parishioners, though on this day there a few extra additions up front. A group of about 15 people sit in the front and, well... they don’t look quite like the rest of the congregation in this 95.5 percent black part of the city. Pastor Bruce serves as an effective bridge between the two groups.

“There’s Gina, there she is again, you know this’ll be the fifth year she’s come down here,” he says. “And I know, she’ll be back next year, won’t you, Gina? She’s gonna bring those kids down here and help us 8

Gina Kolb sheepishly grins and nods.

“Yes, I am.”

The longtime schoolteacher knows she probably will be back for another year, schlepping a group of Lehmann Alternative Community School students down for another week of hammers, nails and paint, another week of trying to help a community struggle back from the worst natural disaster America has ever seen, and another round fighting a battle in which even the most minute progress is both hugely important and seemingly impossible.

This same scene has played out in some variation each of the last six years, since Kolb took over the helm of the annual service venture, which has been going on since the first summer after Hurricane Katrina forever warped New Orleans’ history and the lives of so many of its citizens. Every year, Kolb and her accompanying student group trudge into church that final day, exhausted after a week to 10 days of hard physical labor in the unforgiving Louisiana sun. Sometimes, Kolb has thought

of switching up the trip, plying her craft somewhere else as she nears her 30th year of teaching at Lehman Alternative Community School. But once Davenport repeats his annual appeal, a familiar feeling washes over Kolb, and she knows she’ll be in that same spot, with a new batch of students and a new veil of sweat streaming off their brows next year.

Davenport and his church members will thank them then too. It’s not unheard of for locals to grow resentful toward volunteers who parachute into a disaster site for a week before heading back to the comfort of their everyday lives. At least among Davenport’s community, love and gratitude for Kolb, her students, and the school’s continuing efforts prevail.

“We’re in the thick of it, we still suffer,” Davenport said. “When you’re the lowest person on the totem pole, they keep finding ways to push you lower. There’s no tourists here, they’re not worried about us [...] So the help that Gina gives, that keeps us strong.

It lets us know the cavalry ain’t quite given up on us.”

Davenport’s complaints aren’t unique.

It’s a common refrain that the primary focus of the government’s rebuilding efforts has been aimed toward wealthier areas of the city like the French Quarter, the jewel of New Orleans’ tourism industry. Those same divides have manifested themselves throughout the New Orleans rebuild, perhaps best exemplified by the Ninth Ward.

The Ninth Ward became the lasting image of the destruction Hurricane Katrina wrought, particularly as time has passed and other parts of the city have been rebuilt.

Sandwiched in what proved to be a deadly corridor between Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Borgne, the Ninth Ward absorbed days of destructive blows of rain, wind and flooding. Gentilly has made a nominal comeback in the 12 years since the storm, though it’s still dotted with empty lots and dilapidated houses.

Vacancy is still sky high there – just over 50 percent in 2015 – a partial result of the mass displacement of people in the wake of the storm, some of whom were taken to far-flung cities such as Houston, Dallas or

Atlanta. Some still haven’t been able to afford a trip home.

One thing that is clear when talking to Kolb, school officials and students who have previously attended the New Orleans trip is they are proud of their reputation for sticking around. As the years have gone by, the number of volunteers who travel down to New Orleans to help with continuing rebuild effort has dwindled, diminishing ever so steadily. Part of this is the occurrence of other natural tragedies that fray volunteer efforts, as even Kolb considered changing her service destination after the tornadoes in the Midwest, or Superstorm Sandy in the mid-Atlantic. But when the shock wears off and the microphones and cameras leave, people slowly forget about those places too.

“People would ask why we keep going back to Katrina,” Kolb said, noting the familial connection she and the students end up feeling to the community there. “We don’t want to be the people that leave, we want to be the ones that stick it out and see it through […] It really feels like going home, for me. It’s an important connection that [the students] have built, and that keeps pulling me back also.”

Customarily, the group has almost zero idea what they’re getting into when they get down there, as Kolb says they simply do anything that needs to be done. Pastor Bruce serves as their main contact, making sure all the kids are safe in what can generously be described as not the safest of neighborhoods, but not outwardly hostile either. His past, as a hardened gang member, and his current positive work for the community has bought him enough street credit to keep everyone out of harm’s way.

The group sleeps crammed on the floor of his one-bathroom house and uses his wife’s car for the week. His house was actu-

ally one of the first LACS students worked on back when the trips first started over a decade ago, which initially connected him to the school. He guides them around the city a little bit, usually a stop on Bourbon Street, a night of New Orleans-style bowling, which as it is described appears to include a lot of music and food, and a cheap Chinese buffet, a Pastor Bruce favorite. But mostly, he serves to point Gina and her crew in the direction of those in need of help the most.

That can include painting, cleaning, sanding, cutting, nailing, refurbishing, you name it. Sometimes, houses that the group targets for repairs are vacant and stay vacant due to the difficulty for some people to come home. Other times, however, students form relationships with the people who live in the houses they work on.

For example, former LACS student Tally Johnson tells the story of the Sambrone family and “Ms. Ida,” two neighbors whose houses were scraped and repainted by the students during a recent trip, along with redoing Ms. Ida’s bathroom. Johnson, who’s going back for her third time this year, said the trip was a bubble-bursting experience for her, as she had lived around Ithaca most of her life and hadn’t been exposed to those sorts of conditions in such depth before.

“Bad things happen here, but these people are homeless, or they can’t get home, or they’re sick from staying in a FEMA trailer,” she said, regarding the struggles seen in Ithaca versus those seen in New Orleans.

“It gives you another perspective, and I would be very different if I hadn’t gotten the chance. Anybody can cover their ears and

shut their eyes, but you can’t do that when you get down there.”

That kind of relationship, paired with some good work, can be infectious.

“Neighbors come out and say ‘You’re doing such a great job, do you think you could do mine?’” Kolb said, laughing. “You think, ‘Yeah, sure, I guess’ but Pastor Bruce tells us that sometimes you have to say no.”

To assist with the trip’s usual $10,000 price tag, this year there is a fundraising dinner and concert being held April 1, featuring New Orleans-style food and music by local band Casey Max and the DixieKats. Tickets are $10 each for dinner, $25 just for the concert, or $32 for both. For “The Hunger Banquet,” a variety of dining options are included, determined by lottery— you might have to eat like a pauper in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, or you might get to eat like a member of the wealthy class.

It’s designed to show just how wide the disparity was at the time between the elite and the impoverished classes and how they were differently affected by the storm’s wrath.

The “alternative community” portion of LACS generally refers to a different approach to classroom learning and school structure than a typical public high school.

Students don’t receive grades, and Common Core standards are used only as guidelines, not mandates. Instead, students are “required to fulfill and demonstrate a variety of ‘essentials’ to graduate.” Those essentials include service; students are required to complete 300 hours of community service of some variety before they can graduate from the high school. Though service efforts take place throughout the school year, there is also a list of week-long service trips students can take during a designated time in May, such as to New Orleans or the Akwesasne Freedom School in upstate New York.

J o h n ’s Fa i t h C h u r c h Once LACS’ service ethos is examined, it may not be that surprising that Kolb and those before her chose to keep returning, even regardless of the burgeoning relationship they had with Davenport and the community. LACS intends their service to go beyond helping in the short term, but to hopefully affect long-term change “We really emphasize that students should connect with people outside their comfort zone and outside their normal daily life and try to not only help out the community but get to know people in the community they wouldn’t necessarily know,” said Jon Raimon, a social studies teacher who himself has run the Akwesasne trip for 20 years. “That’s a big part of what it’s about. And certainly the Katrina trip plays into that.”

As much as Davenport says the trips help the community, not only structurally but also to keep hope alive, students who have gone to New Orleans speak of it as a transcendent experience that left an indelible mark on them personally. Students have come to think of the trip as a rite of passage of sorts, Kolb said, which has been the most rewarding part of leading them for this long.

Kolb won’t ever be able to fully leave New Orleans behind, thanks to the fleurde-lis now has tattooed on her ankle. But after 28 years of teaching and nearing seven as the New Orleans leader, if and when Kolb does ever decide to opt out of the trip, she hopes it will continue under someone else’s watch. But she’ll still have to step away in spite of Pastor Bruce’s yearly parting words and the desperate hope of the community they carry with them.

That might prove to be the hardest part.

Valesente v. Valesente

remember one of the first sports stories I did for this newspaper, back in 1993. I was at Ithaca College, interviewing head coach George Valesente of the Bomber baseball team, and while we were talking a little guy was running around the complex. David Valesente ran into the dugout where I was talking to his

dad, and George asked him if he could go scoop up some equipment, as practice was wrapping up. On his way across the field, David – who was about 6 years old at the time – stopped for some batting practice, hit a couple over the fence, and then got the phone numbers from a couple of Ithaca College coeds. He then went over to the

other dugout where he chilled out with a Gatorade and a big chunk o’ chew…

Okay… April Fool on the home runs and the phone numbers and the chew, but I do remember David as a regular presence around the baseball stadium. Here we are, nearly a quarter century later, and come May 4th, there will once again be a Valesente in both dugouts, as the Wells College Express - the brand new baseball program a half hour up the lake from Ithaca College – will visit the Bombers at 4 pm.

As all of us here in the Finger Lakes region know, that late March snowstorm made a sloppy mess of everything, and area baseball and softball teams have been forced to do some schedule juggling. A

“We have played nine games so far,” the coach told me, “but we had to reschedule five more.” He said the team was in Myrtle Beach for their spring trip when the snowstorm hit up north, and he wasn’t sure how long it would take for the new multipurpose field to be ready. “We have a fullturf field, with state-of-the-art drainage,” Valesente offered, “and (Athletic Director) Mr. Lindberg made arrangement to have the snow plowed. Then, when the sun got to it, it disappeared pretty quickly.”

I asked if everyone held their breath when a snowplow was pushing snow off a million dollar carpet, and Dave said, “It was good to have our grounds guys see the process, and we were fortunate to get all our games in.”

I recalled that Wells had held an open tryout last summer, and I asked Valesente if that paid any dividends. He said, “We have a couple of players that are ‘walk-ons,’ but we recruited the vast majority. Since I got here on Day 1, we have been working hard to get things going.” He added, “I’m grateful that we had the time we did because when we started, we didn’t even have the equipment. The planning and budgeting and purchasing all take time.”

David played for an elite high school program in Lansing, he went on to play Division 1 baseball at St. Joseph’s in Philadelphia. He played in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization as an undrafted free agent, and served as an assistant coach at several colleges. When he was hired as the head man at Wells, I recall hearing some chatter that he was a bit young to be a head coach, but when you measure his years not chronologically, but by how much time he has spent around the game and the passion he has brought to it, he’s a seasoned baseball man.

Building a recruiting pipeline takes some relationship-building skills, and Valesente says he is “respecting the process, hoping to bring in quality players to build the program and develop a culture.”

He has several from Ithaca High and Elmira, and he says “Coach Manwaring (Elmira) runs a first-class program there.”

Valesente has more work to do to fill in the blanks, but the team has already picked up its first two wins, and has scored an impressive 48 runs in its first nine games.

Of his players, he says “We are evolving and developing, and we are seeing some of the guys emerge as leaders. We’re becoming a family.”

Federal Judge Reinstates Fired CMC Nurses

federal court judge has ruled that former Cayuga Medical Center nurses Anne Marshall and Loran Lamb must be temporarily allowed back to work after being fired in October 2016.

Marshall and Lamb are currently engaged in an National Labor Relations Board case alleging they were wrongfully terminated by CMC, and the ruling would allow them to return to work until that case is resolved.

The judge’s ruling on the injunction has no impact on the outcome of the ongoing NLRB suit. Marshall and Lamb were fired after they admitted to violating hospital protocol, though they claim it was actually a result of Marshall’s work to organize a nurse’s union, which Lamb publicly supported. The decision was published by the Tompkins County Workers Center.

The judge who issued the injunction decision, Thomas McAvoy, stated that both nurses must be returned to work within

The family of a man who died while awaiting care in the Cayuga Medical Center Emergency Room’s waiting area filed a lawsuit on March 20, claiming “recklessness, gross negligence and conscious disregard” by the hospital.

The lawsuit, filed by Allen Phelps, is seeking unspecified punitive damages.

Phelps is the brother of Lloyd Phelps, a 52 year-old man who died at CMC on January 19 after he was taken by ambulance from an Ithaca grocery store with symptoms including shivering, graying skin and sweating. Phelps died while unattended in the waiting room.

The suit names the hospital, nurses Kathy Fox, Lisa Carrow and Virginia Lincoln, along with Dr. Steven Elliott, Cayuga Emergency Physicians and Supplemental Workforce Solutions, the company that employed Carrow, who was a contract nurse, all as defendants.

five days of the March 23 ruling. Additionally, the judge’s order must be posted at CMC, a mandatory meeting must be held to read the order in its entirety and within 21 days of the ruling a report must be submitted to the court verifying the hospital’s cooperation.

The court document states that the nurses’ petition meets the requirements for a just and proper ruling of reinstatement under the relief injunction statutes.

CMC has issued a statement in response to the federal ruling, stating their strong disapproval and an intention to fight the order.

“We will be seeking a stay of this decision, as well as filing an appeal with the Circuit Court of Appeals. In the meantime, the case before the National Labor Relations Board remains pending and CMC strongly believes its actions were appropriate based on patient safety and national nursing standards.”

not play such a large role in providing money for the state. But as expenses have increased, so have property taxes in recent years, which has put county legislators in an awkward position between the constituents and the state government.

Nguyen, of the Second Ward, was inspired to raise awareness over the tax based on the main principles he holds as a citizen and an elected official, that the most beneficial methods of taxation are those that take from the top income brackets instead of the bottom.

“People are so obsessed with national politics right now they may not be following state politics, even as we’re in the middle of the budget season right now in the state,” Nguyen said. “We have an opportunity to be more equitable about how we get revenue from the state and about how we distribute that money.”

Obviously, with the nation’s healthcare system seemingly in place for now but possibly under siege from a Republican Congress, it is hard to predict the future of healthcare taxes in New York. For now, though, unlike most other states, county governments are expected to shoulder a more significant portion of Medicaid costs than elsewhere. That money has to come from somewhere, usually taxpayers, so taking the $3.5 billion out of the state could have a large effect even down to the city level.

“If anything gets cut, it has a dramatic impact on the city, on our affordable housing, our infrastructure,” Nguyen said.

“There’s almost nothing I hear more about than high taxes, and while city taxes are a big chunk, county taxes are as high as they are because of Medicaid, so any help in that area helps city residents too.”

There are also allegations of medical record falsification after the fact contained in the suit. The nurses and Elliott are accused of not assessing and triaging the patient before sending him to the waiting room, and generally violating hospital emergency room policies.

The hospital released a statement related to the lawsuit, stating “The death of a patient in the Emergency Department at Cayuga Medical Center was a tragic event for our community. We personally met with family members to express our sincere apology and have committed to them that immediate changes have been made and will continue to be made as a result of this tragic incident. We have not received the court filing and are unable to comment on the document until we review it.”

I was on a basketball team arranged by the Youth Bureau last year and the schedule worked out. We practiced two nights a week at the Lehman Alternative Community School (LACS) or at Dewitt. Kids on the team were homeschooled or went to Boynton, LACS, Dewitt or EAC. We had two coaches—Sammy Meminger, a freshman at IC, and Ben Maravitch, a senior at Cornell.

They worked well together and kept things organized. They were good coaches.

On practice nights I’d get home around 3:40 PM from school and do a little homework, eat something and then relax. I never have to get pumped up about basketball, but I need to go to practice with an uncluttered mind, be in a good state of mind. That way I can totally focus and do well. Mostly I would lie down and read for a while. Reading calms me.

One of my favorite authors is Mike Lupica. He has worked for ESPN before.

He’s also a best-selling writer according to the New York Times.

My father used to read the first book of Rick Riordan’s Egyptian mythology series to us. He’s another favorite author of mine.

I like to read things myself instead of being read to. So now I’ve read all of Rick Riordon’s books on mythology—Greek my tholog y, Eg y ptian my tholog y and Greek-Roman mythology. He knows a lot about mythology. Rick Riordon believes that monsters and gods are still alive. His books have become very popular at school.

This year I started cross country. The team has players from Boynton, Dewitt, EAC, and LACS and we’re all 7th and 8th graders. The 8th graders ran last year and they are the best.

We practice at Ithaca High School. First we run around the IHS track and stretch.

Then we take a warm-up run. One of my first practices we ran for 40 minutes. In basketball we run all the time, but it’s short sprints. So on our first run I sprinted and I was totally wiped out. As we were running I asked myself “What if I just quit? But then I said, “No, I will stick this out and I will improve.”

The next day, the run was from IHS to the Commons and then back to IHS by Cayuga Street. It took about 25 minutes.

I was not as wiped out. Having the 8th graders to look up to helps me push myself.

By the end of the week I could tell I was steadily doing better.

IC Faculty Strike Avoided, Contract Reached

E

nding more than 17 months of negotiations (spread out over 30 meetings) Ithaca College’s administration and the contingent faculty union have reached an agreement on a new contract.

Terms of the contract have not yet been released. The announcement comes just over a day before the planned two-day contingent faculty strike, which has now been canceled. Sunday’s bargaining session was the final scheduled negotiation before the strike, and lasted just under 11 hours.

Few details of the deal were initially made, though the school had detailed its initial proposal going into Sunday’s discussions to the union in an Intercom post.

The union had subsequently responded to the offer, laying out what they intended to fight for during Sunday’s talks, which included: • • •

Higher pay for part-time faculty A more immediate cost-of-living wage increase for full-time contingent faculty An answer for the school’s decision to not renew the contracts of most of the full-time faculty bargaining committee, for which the school is currently being challenged by the National Labor Relations Board Longer appointments for full-time contingent faculty with certain levels of seniority (the school had proposed two years, the union planned to counter with three)

The union celebrated on Twitter directly after the negotiations ended. They claimed victory on pay parity, probably the most consequential of the remaining issues, as well as the other remaining obstacles.

In the aftermath of the agreement, both sides issued their reactions. The school released a statement announcing the agreement, devoid of specifics but emphasizing its happiness at avoiding a strike.

“We would like to thank the union bargaining committee for working so diligently with us to resolve the remaining contract issues, arrive at an agreement, and avert a strike. We are deeply grateful for the commitment to come to an agreement during this session.”

The union, on the other hand, published a fairly comprehensive statement listing certain points of the deal and striking a much more victorious tone than the college.

“Today at negotiations we won everything: a significant pay increase for PT faculty, more stable appointments for FT contingent faculty, and maintaining our voice as one union for both part-time and full-time contingent faculty. We are very pleased to announce that on the eve of our strike, the administration met all our demands. We have tentatively agreed to a collective bargaining agreement that we are extremely proud of.”

Certain aspects still aren’t fully clear, such as exactly what percent raise the faculty ended up receiving (including the immediate raise), but this and the rest of the statement shed some light on the resulting contract.

An established path towards pay parity for PT faculty. PT faculty will receive immediate raises, as well as immediate and annual raises totaling $1,025/3 credit course over the life of our contract. We believe that because of our hard work, and the support of our allies, the administration is committed to the concept of pay parity going forward.

More stability for FT contingent faculty. FT contingent faculty will be eligible for two-year appointments after 3 years of teaching at IC and three-year appointments after 5 years of teaching at IC. More stability for PT contingent faculty. PT contingent faculty will be eligible for two-year appointments after 3 years of teaching at IC. In addition, if classes are cut last minute, PT contingent faculty will receive a $1,300 kill fee per class canceled.

Part-time and full-time contingent faculty have won the right to be recognized as one union.

A celebration of the faculty’s success was set to take place at Ithaca College on March 28, after press time.

After the bus was converted, it became a “four season, solar-powered house.” It even has running hot and cold water, heating, insulation, a custom kitchen, cherry countertops, a chest fridge, a four burner propane range and oven, a couch/bed with storage underneath, a shower, a composting toilet and “tons of solar power.”

“There’s way more than I can ever use,” Shanks stated. “One thing it could show is a testament to how easy it really is to have a solar powered home, because I never have to think about conserving electricity at all.

I never worry about conserving electricity because I have more than I know what to do with.”

Shanks added heat is also “very adequately provided” through a non-electric pellet stove, which can burn for 36 hours before refueling is needed.

“I have enough room to comfortably store all of the food, clothes, instruments, tools, etc that two or even three people could possibly need,” he explained. “The solar system is more than adequate to charge my phone, my computer and my tablet and to run my fridge, my vacuum, my coffee grinder, my water pump, my lights and everything else I can think to use in there, while never dropping the batteries below 90 percent charge.”

Shanks has grown up with various skills in order to complete the work needed.

“I had building, plumbing and electrical experience from taking woodworking and furniture design classes in high school, as well as building a shed for my parents’ house,” he said.

Shanks also has experience from renovating and constantly improving the greenhouse where he worked with his cousin in Arizona, as well as other projects he has worked on.

The event featured several special guests including Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers, Stephanie Miller, Mayor of Syracuse, Nomiki Konst of The Young Turks, and Arun Chaudhary, former Sanders campaign creative director and White House videographer under President Obama.

“There are lots and lots and lots of folks who are taking it upon themselves to be activists in their community and it’s inspiring to see,” said Chaudhary who

The Zookeeper’s Wife opens this week nationally and in Ithaca on Friday

O

ne little-known story of opposition to Nazism is that of a young Polish zookeeper and his wife, who saved the lives of more than 300 Jews.

During the German occupation of Warsaw, zoo director Jan Żabiński, an officer in the Resistance, regularly risked his life in ways he couldn’t even share with his wife. Antonina kept the household and zoo running, protected their son Ryś and infant daughter, and personally cared for the many Jews who passed through their shelter on the way to safe houses both in and outside the city.

Antonina’s story is strikingly recounted in The Zookeeper’s Wife: A War Story, a nonfiction work by Ithaca-based essayist, poet, and naturalist Diane Ackerman. Published in 2007, the book was on the New York Times best-seller list for a year. In 2008, it earned the Orion Award for its originality in exploring the human relationship to nature –– showing that “a book can be at the same time a work of art, an act of conscientious objection to the destruction of the world, and an affirmation of hope and human decency.”

The book was soon optioned for a film, which took eight years to be realized. Significantly, the Focus Features film set a record for women crew members (around 20%) –– with a woman director (Niki Caro), three women producers, screenwriter (Angela Workman), author (Ackerman), camera operator, stunt coordinator, and

at Cinemapolis, where the 4:15 p.m. screening will be followed by a talkback and book signing with Ackerman. The film has already had special viewings worldwide, including at the U.S. Holocaust Museum and the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.

The Ithaca Times spoke recently with Diane Ackerman about the book and the film.

Ithaca Times: How did you discover this story?

Diane Ackerman: I was traveling around the world researching endangered animals, when I heard that there were ancient horses running around a primeval forest in Poland. I really wanted to see them. Both my parents had come from Poland before the war, and my grandfather had told me that the countryside, the old forests, were very beautiful. I was writing for National Geographic and proposed a piece on the Przywalski horses, but they sent me to the South Pacific instead. But in 2005 I went to Poland.

IT: You did massive research for the book –– what was your process?

DA: I wrote the book in layers, both researching and writing. As narrative nonfiction, it needed to read like a novel with the usual fictional devices of plot and character, but I couldn’t make anything up. How do you do that if you weren’t alive at the time and events took place in an unfamiliar culture? It’s possible to learn an enormous amount about the history, the culture, the natural history, and the personal lives relevant to the book.

For example, I knew Antonina and her son were hiding in a lampshade store at one point.

She doesn’t describe the store in her diary, but I could find out what Baltic lampshades of the era looked like.

And it’s possible to learn the navigation patterns of birds over Warsaw in 1939 –­– so I knew what she saw when she looked up.

Warsaw was nearly leveled during the war, but its old town has been entirely rebuilt, a replica based on Renaissance architectural drawings. And when I actually went there, the zoo’s villa still stands. So I could stand on Antonina’s balcony and see what she saw and have the same sensory experience, could see the linden trees, the dew on the tiles. The hollow wooden staircase still sounds like a musical instrument when you walk on it. Many of the same animals are at the zoo today, and you can find out what they smell like, what order they call in in the morning. I also visited the underground museum and the sites where things happened.

And I interviewed Ryś, who still lives in Warsaw.

whose uncle had been a vet at the zoo. He remembered that the zookeeper’s wife had kept a diary, which he sent and the Polish woman translated. I was thunderstruck by the splendor of Antonina’s sensibility, her almost mystical relationship with animals.

She treated them with enormous care and respect, and as a result they trusted her. She was a kind of animal whisperer, adopting orphan animals from the forest and raising them in the villa. It was from her diary I learned she was sheltering Jews from the ghetto –– she and her husband were so disgusted by Nazi racism that they decided they had to do something about it.

They began hiding people after the bombing of the zoo in 1939 –– in the backs of cages were rooms, and the pheasant house was enclosed. They were all connected by a ribbed underground tunnel from the lions’ house. Everyone they sheltered passed through there. And they also hid “guests” in the house –– in the basement, between the upstairs walls, in the attic, in cupboards.

Interestingly, all accounts of rescuers in Poland said the same thing: “I wasn’t really a hero; anyone in my situation would have done the same thing –– it was the right thing to do.”

IT: What aspects of your book does the film reflect well?

DA: The film is very good about the relationship between the different characters, which has a lot to do with the nuanced responses of the actors. For me, that brought a richness to the story.It’s also excellent on the Żabińskis’ relationship with the animals. And Jan’s going in and out of the ghetto is very powerful in the film.

IT: Antonina’s relationship with Berlin zookeeper Lutz Heck goes much further than in the book.

DA: Yes, but I read his autobiography and it’s clear he was sweet on her. But I didn’t have enough evidence at the time to include that. I felt the film handled it well, and Antonina’s daughter Teresa was fine with it too.

IT: Your book provided a strong picture of the underground –– the varied and complex levels of resistance –– and the incredible uncertainty of every moment.

DA: That context –– also history and the way daily life is registered –– is covered better in the book, whereas the film concentrates on characters. Though for a more elaborate sense of the characters’ internal lives, you have to read the book.

IT: Any negative aspects of the Żabińskis’ relationship that you didn’t show? Jan’s masculinist values certainly come through…

DA: I was really candid in the book about the parts of their relationship that might have been difficult. Partly that has to do with the role of women in Poland’s culture at the time. For context, I read a great deal written by women in that era and spoke with two women in their 80s who’d been Resistance bicycle messengers. I cared a lot about showing the Żabińskis as multifaceted personalities –– nobody is perfect –– and their children are fine with this.

IT: As a naturalist and poet you seem to have a personal connection with Antonina, her instinctiveness.

DA: Yes, I discovered that by reading her children’s books, in which she becomes other animals, and in her diary on daily life in the zoo. She was attuned to the textures of everyday life in a way that’s very familiar to me. I identified with her kinship with animals, how intimately woven into the seasons and nature she was. And the movie captures that quality –– from the very opening you see her genuine love of animals, which for her exists on a continuum that includes humans.

Antonina herself was an orphan; her parents had been murdered early in the Russian Revolution. She grew up as orphans often do, needing to pay attention to the behaviors of the people around her. Her gift, her sensitivity, made it possible for her to handle the Nazis who stopped by the zoo –– she was able to read them in the same way she could read animals.

IT: What was the adaptation process like for you?

DA: I chose not to be involved writing the screenplay; that’s not my area of expertise. But I spoke with the writer and producers at enormous length. And they showed me the script to make sure I was happy with it. My job was to make sure that the filmmakers could be trusted with the story because the Żabiński children were still alive. Teresa loves the film; she even appears in an early scene. My first response to reading the script was “this is so cinematic!” I spent four days on set in Prague and was amazed at how one art form gets translated into another.

This was very much a woman’s film, and we all came to it because we were attracted to Antonina’s story –– a story of good coming out of evil, a story of different forms of heroism. As head of an underground unit that blew up trains, Jan was heroic in the traditional way. But Antonina risked her life every day; she was in constant danger. Yet she made sure the people in her care survived the war with their humanity intact, that they were able to continue leading their lives despite the trauma. She understood that if you keep the physical body alive, but the spirit dies, how do you go on living your life?

Ordinary people can rise to extraordinary acts of mercy and heroism. Antonina was performing radical acts of compassion –– something that happens every day on our war-torn planet, but we don’t hear about it very often. It’s especially the form that women perform.

IT: Seventy years later, this story still has intense relevance today.

DA: Unfortunately, these are still days of genocide that we live in. The refugee crisis continues, and we see a resurgence of racism and prejudice in our own country.

Today’s political climate has caused so many people to compare it to the early days of Nazi Germany. I think this story offers a message about the need for tolerance –– about what can happen if we’re not vigilant about free speech and human rights, about our interconnectedness. •

’m so glad I fell in love with films during the ’70s, when Roger Corman’s low-budget drive-in movies were two steps ahead of the major studios. And I’m so sad that I’ve lived to see Corman sidelined and irrelevant, dribbling out idiotic schlock like Roger Corman’s Death Race 2050, his remake of Death Race 2000 (1975).

writer-editor-director G. J. Echternkamp on Marc Maron’s podcast. Echternkamp seems like a nice guy, but his version of one of the great cheap movies just reeks of what Frank Zappa called “cheepnis.”

I had to watch Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul, Mr. Show) in the new Netflix original Girlfriend’s Day twice, just to make sure I saw what I think I saw. It wasn’t a chore: the first fiction feature from documentarian Michael Stephenson (Best Worst Movie) only runs 70 minutes. It’s one of those comedies where you laugh because what’s happening to Odenkirk isn’t happening to you. He plays Ray, an unemployed, divorced alcoholic greeting card writer with writer’s block, just as a new holiday is announced and everyone clamors for the latest cheesy platitude to slap on a card.

In this world as conceived by Odenkirk, Philip Zlotorynski and Eric Von Hoffman, the whole world revolves around greeting cards. Everything comes back to cards for Ray; his ex-wife left him for a more successful writer played by Andy Richter, and Ray gets pulled into the seedy underbelly of what we all thought of as a pretty mundane industry.

And it’s only the second time through that you realize that the whole film is a fairly adroit parody of Chinatown, complete with funky ’70s vibe in the vein of Hal Ashby and Michael Ritchie. The film co-stars Amber Tamblyn, Rich Sommer, Toby Huss, Stacy Keach, Larry Fessenden and Natasha Lyonne. I heard Corman and hearing The Ramones for the first time. •

Catching up with Naked Noise’s visual director

I

thaca Underground’s annual Naked Noise showcase is sort of like the avant-garde Halloween party for spring dreamers. It’s a good place to wonder through and lose yourself and get a good sense of the dense power of artistic collaboration. A plethora of musicians join with some groovy visual artists to create a unique little universe: ever sparkling and always simmering.

Austin-based filmmaker and installation artist Nils Hoover is once again part of the visual crew whipping the physical environment into shape. Hoover has roots in Tompkins County and graduated from Ithaca College. His more personal work is primarily post-modern, and that’s what you’ll get to see at Naked Noise: a landscape of freedom that allows for continuity. Ithaca Times caught up with Hoover a few days before he drives up from Austin.

Here’s the skinny.

Ithaca Times: What are you up to these days in Austin, and on a day-to-day basis, what’s the artistic process like for you?

Nils Hoover: Primarily I work as a filmmaker, and in my spare time I work as an artist. Each project I’m part of calls for its own process and often the first stage is one of accumulating inspiration

and dreaming big. From initial ideas I go into the testing of elements to make sure they’ll work out like I have it in my head.

I just have to keep playing around until sparks fly and usually the rest comes together magically on it its own.

IT: You’ve worked on Naked Noise before. What’s your connection to Ithaca Underground, and for this year, what’s the process and method shaping out to be?

IT: How does music relate to your visual sense, and do you see the artistic process as a whole vast connection, or something that’s individually (and separately) unique?

NH: The main challenge that I’ve always set for myself is to be a visual instrument. And because the event is called “Naked Noise,” I think it’s important to be true to that. Instrumental music is entirely emotional, so I try to steer clear of using any visual symbolism. The visuals at Naked Noise are audio reactive, but are also performed live, just as the musicians are all reacting to each other and the light, and the light is reacting to them. I think that’s a really beautiful relationship and I really love being a part of the musical conversation.

IT: What kind of environment does the room at CSMA offer, in terms of abstraction and possibilities?

NH: CSMA is great because there is so much depth. I love the tall ceilings and the fact that it’s an old ballroom adds so much character to the show. We have a tradition where the musicians bring lamps to provide light to themselves and in an eclectic way I feel that fits into the whole mood of the room.

This past year CSMA did some minor renovations, and in the process took away almost all of my mounting points. Finding solutions to this has been a really great constraint that forced the project into new shapes.

IT: What kind of relationship are you experiencing with your creative outlook during these intense and haunting social and political times?

NH: I’ve definitely found my work being politicized, and more than ever I’m finding it important to use art to shape culture. I just finished a music video with a pretty hard environmental and political slant, and I’m excited to do more. Naked Noise in its nature is very abstract and the scope of the experience exists in a realm beyond politics. I think this is important too, having space in our lives for the creating and experiencing of love and the divine.

IT: What types of music are generally listening to at your most productive?

NH: I’ve been listening to a lot of early blues, and will always have a special place in my heart for the Brainfeeder and Warp record labels. Specifically when working on Naked Noise, there is a really great noise archive on archive.org, and it’s really fun to search through there to find some old noise gems.

IT: Any advice to aspiring artists?

NH: While I think productivity is overrated, just keep making work. Art and creativity is a muscle and a set of skills just like anything, and in order to grow as an artist you have to make mistakes. Don’t be afraid to find your own way. Culture is setup for the 9-5-type life and if you are going to live outside of that you need to trust and listen to yourself more than anyone else. •

A diverse and playful exhibit at Corners Gallery

O

blong cages containing blown glass plants hang from the ceiling in Corners Gallery: articulate, yet organic forms painted in earthy shades of yellow. The plants are tubular and solid, each grounded in a base of circular glass orbs. Beside them are two other glass plants

mounted against the wall, shielded in containment. Their titles read their so-called species’ names: Efflorescence bachatus for the larger, flower-covered one, and Ocular globule (juvenile) for a smaller form covered in glass circles. These objects, sculptures but ones given the façade of life, are captivating with their mystique of age and their alien-like (or at the very least novel) features. They exemplify the “urge to seek and gather novel organisms for contemplation and display,” which the artist, Robin Cass, writes about in her statement. “Although it is in our nature to categorize and define,” she continues, “we relish the sense of wonder that accompanies an enigma.”

Wonder and curiosity are in fact the binding force that grounds the gallery’s current show, All Manner of Marvels: Wonders Seldom Seen, qualities exemplified through Cass’ work but also present in work by nine other artists also included in the show.

Curated by Ithaca artist Steve Carver, the group exhibition is openly diverse and unquestionably playful. With its intent of eclecticism and its inspiration taken from the “cabinets of curiosity” of 16th and 17th century Europe, it includes any manner of marvels (so to speak) from animals to medical implements. In this case, the artworks are the curiosities, and delving into artists’ visions through viewing their work is one of the show’s many pleasures.

Perpetually biased toward my individual tastes, Minna Resnick’s mixed-media

print Neither Do They is a definite winner with its sly humor and biting social commentary. In the forefront is the line drawing of a woman reading a sheet of paper as she lies on her stomach, naked except for her shoes and socks. In the background is a large blown-up female silhouette, as well as a line of women in old-fashioned bathing suits, their faces obscured but red-lipped smiles tauntingly painted on. Compositionally speaking, the piece is beautifully executed, but it is also sharply thought-provoking with its allusion toward childhood (a rubber ball carefully positioned) and its critique of commercially fueled notions of how one must behave as a female in one’s strive for social acceptance.

Lou Beach’s collages are equally as comical with their odd use of juxtaposition and brash characters. Poltroons on Parade depicts complete chaos as a dog-like character with a crown bears arrows from his chest, while a metal, snake-powered and oil-dripping robot shoots a flaming missile from his mouth. The environment is Roman or Grecian with pillared buildings, and a knight lies dead on the ground.

Still, however violent, the piece maintains a playful edge. Looking closer still, it includes references to Washington D.C. and perhaps political chaos in general.

Marshall Hyde’s work, drawings and a sculpture all paying ode to a monkey, are perhaps closely linked to cabinets of curiosity-type fare. Beth Hylen’s sculptures and interactive journal (in which she asks viewers to write a few words) all focus on notions of hope as prompted through feathers. Robin Whiteman’s four porcelain figures of goddesses and animals produce a near spiritual environment, like tokens of self-discovery and communion with the creatures within. Conversely, Wayne Kruse’s painting Masquerade Boogie appears colorful and colorfully narrated. Gary Panter’s Balm (Couple & the North Pole) is also perfectly odd and entertaining, which includes two characters (one a man in dress

pants and slicked hair looking quizzical, the other a woman wearing only a blazer and an acoustic guitar) who are, for no known reason, simply standing in the North Pole.

Steve Carver’s own work, too, is a colorful collection of textures, words and images, and Bill Hasting presents watercolor drawings as well as an impressive sculpture made from plastic fencing that examine and exhibit organic forms of living objects and sea life.

It sounds redundant to say there is much here in this show, but there is. All Manner of Marvels asks you to open your eyes to curiosity and take in all that you find. •

full, and more rocking than ever before.

Aikins is a big reason for the progression: a singer with a beautiful and powerful totality.

“There’s definitely more of a classic rock vibe to the new stuff,” she noted.

“I certainly take a more rock-sounding approach to my vocals. I was raised on bands like Fleetwood Mac, The Allman Brothers and Led Zeppelin. That stuff blew my mind when I first listened to it, and it’s always been an integral part of my musical being.”

Paper Bird’s allure is vast. The harmony that comes from three female lead singers is intense and hypnotic. The group formed in Denver in 2006 and captivated a plethora of ears with their honest and soft psychedelic vibe. In 2014 the band parted ways with long-time vocalist Esme Patterson and started veering towards new realms of audio vision. The timing for Aikins has proved epic.

“When I joined up they were tran-

sitioning to a more electric group, and I have more of a rock based voice, so it was really a natural progression for all of us,” she explained. “The early incarnation of the band was primarily acoustic based, and with that sort of approach there’s a lot of empty space that’s being filled. With electric guitars you really pair the whole thing down and get to the core.”

The band released the self-titled Paper Bird in 2016, a magically pulsing and varied ride. There’s a rare warmth hovering throughout, and a chilling morality nestling around every corner. The group’s trademark lushness is still mightily realized, and for all the denser and more rock-oriented grooves the band puts forth, it still maintains that pure Paper Bird escapism.

The band is original in both output and quality. You can’t label them with a specific sound: they transcend genre with a deep soul.

“It’s difficult to define our sound in part because I think people want to be told what they’re listening to, and what to hear when they do listen,” Aikins said. “Our music is open and accepting, and this is reflexive.”

“Heavy Roads,” a song off the new album, is a total and complete perception: a composition that moves both hard and soft. Showcasing the band’s more grittier and raw tendencies, the song is good example of how the group can bend time both elastic and circular. Living in America in 2017 has been an intense and strange reality, a time reminiscent of the ’60s. It’s a period that’ll prove a unique turn in the country’s social fabric. Everyone’s inner vision is meant to shine at a specific time; for Paper Bird, that time is now.

“I think you can write a song that can mean one thing when you write it, and then down the road it can bend toward a different meaning,” Aikins noted. “And I think we’ve been feeling that lately, especially as women. There’s a weight to create art in this moment. It feels like you have to say something truly meaningful with your message, and in that way it’s a lot like the ’60s.” •

The Return of a Landmark Simeon’s has a new bent and new vibe

he kitchen staff at Simeon’s had about seven months to practice with its new menu, new settings and a new crowd eager to get reacquainted with the cuisine they’ve missed for the past several years. After my recent visits, I can confirm that while it’s not the same old Simeon’s, the restaurant does not disappoint.

Let’s start with the menu. It’s significantly smaller offering just eight “small plates” and eight “large plates” (we should think of them as appetizers and entrees.) We can assume that with a smaller menu the chefs can execute each item with more care. To compensate for the reduced offerings, management now offers three daily specials to the small plates and two to the large plates. It is the intention to issue new menus about eight times a year in order to be able to quickly react to seasonal availabilities.

Among the small plates there will always be three vegetarian items.

During a recent visit those offerings were a kale salad, sunchoke tostones and roasted Brussels sprouts. I ordered the Brussels sprouts, and I enjoyed the crunch provided by the accompanying walnut granola. On a subsequent visit I opted for the beef tartare, which was a chopped strip sirloin topped with a homemade potato mesh nest. The tartare

was then enclosed with a confit (cooked in fat) egg yolk, which made for a tasty concoction when I broke the yolk and mixed it with the meat. The meat itself had been aged, in house, for 40 days and was mixed with pickled mustard seeds, shallot marmalade and chives. Appetizer prices range from $8-14.

In the large plates section, there will always be two pastas and one of those will be vegetarian. You’ll also find two steak entrees, at very different prices; at the moment these are a flat iron steak ($26) and a N.Y. strip filet ($37). There will be one fish entrée and one fish special each evening. At present the menu item is a farmraised salmon with lentils, leeks and mushrooms. The special is a dish of four large sea scallops, which are pan seared and served with pan-seared and then roasted fingerling potatoes and celery root in a cream sauce with garlic and herbs.

There will also always be a pork entrée. I ordered the pork tenderloin and was served two very tender rolled medallions and a small square of pork belly. It was served with homemade “spaetzle,” cabbage, raisins and a swath of apple puree — lots of variety on the plate and very tasty.

For one dinner I ordered the chicken special, and the presentation was quite

original: the entrée was divided in two sections with a smear of rutabaga puree in between. On the left was breast meat, which had been pan seared, roasted and rolled into a small cylindrical shape. On the right was another cylindrical form composed of thigh and leg meat, which was taken off the bone and smoked in house. These were mixed with a concentrated juice, which had been rendered from the bones and then reduced. The dark meat was combined with celery root and fried gnocchi.

I think you’ll get a better understanding of management’s new attitude at this latest incarnation of Simeon’s when I tell you the chicken was raised on a farm in New York State or Pennsylvania, was brought to the restaurant whole and then butchered in the kitchen, the smoking of the legs and thighs was accomplished on the premises, the gnocchi was made by Simeon’s chefs (as is all their pasta) and the rutabaga was locally grown. Another change, which I welcome, is that the servers now tell the price of the specials without being asked.

Simeon’s regulars will recognize the dessert service, which hasn’t changed. The server brings a handheld offering of five small demi-desserts at $3.75 each.

The wine and cocktail menus are extensive and offer a good variety.

is reduced to $24. It is worth noting that from Tuesday through Friday from 5-6 p.m., oysters are served at 50 percent off the regular price, so a dozen can be enjoyed for $18. Wednesday is wine night with selected wines served from 30-50 percent off with different winemakers on the premises to serve free samples and describe their wines. Thursday selected flights of Scotch and whiskey are offered from $12-35.

The restaurant is open for lunch on Friday with a brunch/lunch on Saturday and Sunday. It is closed Mondays. Dinner is available Tuesday through Sunday.

Simeon’s would not be classified as inexpensive, however it is no higher in price than several other restaurants in our area that serve quality food that is well prepared.

With the time the owners had to reevaluate the operation, there are now three attractive new dining areas and, with two newly hired chefs, the food is as good as it always was, and the presentations coming from the kitchen are more sophisticated. • Ithaca Times restaurant reviews are based on unannounced, anonymous visits. iving their musical form, Baltimore progressive funk legions Pigeons Playing Ping Pong have a defiant angle: two guitarists, a bassist and a drummer. No keyboards. For a band that’s steeped deep in a musical scene that often relies on repetitive synthbased grooves, these guys standout for their creative adaptation. When they extend, it’s more progressive and more rhythmically raw.

“Without a keyboardist, it’s definitely led me to explore rhythm in a different and interesting way,” guitarist and frontman Greg Ormont noted. “I think what’s been most influential to our sound, is the way the band really listens to each other.

It’s the key to the whole thing.”

That intense communication has allowed for a special comfort and maximization of individuality. There are a lot of angles to Pigeons Playing Ping Pong.

They bounce around musically like actual ping-pong balls — the ones that go nut bar in the lottery wheel. One turn is sunshine funk, another darkened heaviness and another still, ’70s-inspired guitar

god ascension. The color of the band is multiplex, allowing for a wide and loyal appreciation, and a very freeing intensity.

“It’s cool because the jamming and the extended improvisation naturally lends itself to different musical avenues,” Ormont explained. “We’re not consciously picking styles or modes when we’re jamming, and in that way, all the band’s inspirations come out in a natural sort of way.”

The band’s latest release, 2016’s Pleasure, is a funk odyssey with serious progressive notion. It stands strong as a singular and direct work. For a band with a specific fan base — one that’s often billed as averse to studio albums — Pigeons Playing Ping Pong should be commended for creating a record that can stand on its own. A good band can make a good record, not just jam.

“We really want our records to reflect out true energy,” Ormont said.

“That naturalness the band exhibits when playing live needs to be there, but so does the intensity of song craft.

Recording a record that’s mostly going to be listened to by a very specific crowd is a tricky balance. You don’t want to lose your listener with a song that’s too long, and you don’t want to write something that doesn’t contain the elements that make you unique.”

It’s the live experience that makes the band so immense. Gripping, sharp and euphoric; the band’s a fury of haze and warmth up there; and engaging as hell. They build off of each crowd’s direct energy, straddling the ever-precarious line of submission and extension. To be able to collect a direct cosmic substance,

images have appeared in magazines and calendars worldwide, as well as in her four books. She travels widely but also works extensively in her Freeville backyard.

“Well, I mean, it’s like that old saying: s--- or get off the pot, you know,” Ormont laughed. “Playing live you really have to be fueled by the crowd, really connect and transcend them. That’s the whole experience. And it’s also important for me personally, to recognize that I’m not in the crowd, and that I have a job to do. That takes a lot of specific energy.”

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong is like a wave of totality washing over your brow. You can’t help but admire the cool admission they dab. You can tell this is a labor of love, a thing that exists because of pure effort and absolution.
