Miller, responding to an invitation from Jail Committee Chair Rich John to speak at the meeting, explained to the board that there are many instances in which he finds himself sending someone to jail knowing that the inmate will likely undergo detox with limited medical supervision.

He said he recently ruled on the case of a man in his 30s who had overdosed and survived; his wife also overdosed, but she died, leaving behind their young child.

As is often the case with drug users, Miller said he had an obligation to send the man to jail because he violated his probation and had new criminal charges.

Four Local Students Travel To UN

A

g roup of fou r lo c a l high school students recently returned from a trip to the United Nations, attending a Student Leadership Conference on Development and presenting action projects on remedying domestic abuse worldwide.

Faith de Castro, Berk ley Sawester, Marie Griswold and Anna Sutherland, all seniors at Trumansburg High School, were among students from a wide range of countries who convened in New York City for t he con ference, wh ich dealt with three topics from the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. They were led by Gertrude Noden, founder of Words into Deeds, a local education company that strives to make community connections a curriculum priority.

The group researched and

created a presentation showing what they had found surrounding domestic violence, and broke their work down into the normal UN resolution format, which is succinct clauses that are either introductory or operative. All of them were picked for leadership roles at the event as well, an impressive feat considering the short amount of time they had to prepare for the conference.

The group approached the topic from a variety of different angles, researching the correlation between substance abuse and domestic violence, its role in the LGBT community, how empowerment can help fight domestic violence, and the legal representation available to victims.

“We focus a lot on domestic abuse, and it’s something that is really important to me but it doesn’t get a whole lot of attention, and so I think that being able to do something that was fun and enjoyable, but something that I really cared about as well,” de Castro said.

ust past the Ithaca Falls on Lake Street, there stands a house that has seen better days. Its door and first-f loor windows are boarded over from the inside, with a duct-taped ‘X’ visible through the front screen door. A demolition notice is taped just above a three-foot drop where presumably there used to be stairs.

This property, downtrodden as it seems today, once was a gateway of tourism Ithaca, serving as the entry to the industrial area of Ithaca’s colonial past. That was some time in the 1870s, but Ithaca College physics and astronomy professor Michael Rogers, also known as “Bodhi,” is using cutting edge laser-imaging technology to create a lasting model of the house digitally. The machine shoots thousands of lasers every five millimeters and creates a blueprint of the surfaces that those lasers hit. The lasers bounce off of pre-placed scanning devices, then travel to the imaging subject and return back — the speed of which can help determine distance and scale. Rogers and his team, which consists of two IC students, manually move the laser around each side of the house before setting up inside to create the threedimensional digital model. The whole process, both inside the house and outside, takes about a day for a house the size of the Lake Street location. Rogers’ interest in the new technology’s capabilities comes from a desire of preservation, but also laser scanning’s general usefulness as a tool to help with safety and

development. As Ithaca continues developing at a rapid rate, there may be more pressure to move on from its historic roots.

“Situations like t his are going to continually come up, there are going to be reasons to remove a historic building, accidents happen or natural disasters,” he said. “So preserving things digitally is my core interest because you don’t know what’s going to happen.”

He also said it could be practically used for monitoring of structural problems with houses, to see if a building is “slumping” or deteriorating in dangerous ways. Rogers decided to take action at Lake Street when he heard that the house had been condemned. He contacted his Common Council representative and asked for permission to examine the house and make records for research purposes.

Historic Ithaca, a non-profit dedicated to preserving the historic integrity of the city, will be receiving a copy of the scan when Rogers is finished. At first, Rogers and Bill Brauninger, another area resident, thought the house might have been built sharing some structural pieces from the historical building, though this was disproven. In addition to some level of professional curiosity, it gives Rogers a chance to work with his students in the field, engaging them in something outside the classroom and with real results.

The laser apparatus, which includes a tripod that is adjustable for uneven surfaces or inclines, costs $95,000, funded

by Ithaca College for Rogers’ research. It also takes horizontal and vertical pictures in order to provide area context for the images. These pictures can also be manipulated later to examine processes like remodeling. For example, Rogers said, someone could digitally move trees or show different sunlight patterns when looking to change landscaping or to modify the structure of a house. Rogers has worked on these kinds of historical properties before, including at Trim Castle in Ireland and Abraham Lincoln’s cottage in Washington, D.C. Rogers got involved in 3D laser scanning after 20 years of below-ground imaging, which has been around for decades.

As above-ground scanning was introduced and evolved, he caught on with the trend and has cultivated a cadre of scanning instruments at Ithaca College, with the school’s help.

Aside from an expansive program at the University of Missouri, IC’s scanning, powered

by Rogers, is one of the more innovative of its kind across the country. He said as normal computers become more powerful, things like “virtual tours” could become more common: the next avenue for 3D imaging.

“Instead of having my hightech software, can we create a version of this where, on your browser at home, you can zoom through the wall and walk around, and that’s what’s coming next,” he said. “The technology has changed, just within the last five years. It’s going so fast now.”

The days just after an overdose are the best time for an intervention, he said, but at the jail this man would have to quit cold turkey without the intensive aftercare that might have allowed him to take the first steps toward recovery. “You miss that key window of opportunity,” Miller said. The judge explained that in these cases he is not able to order someone to go to a regular detox center because the inmate must be sent to a secure facility where he or she is under the supervision of the jail and (unlike a detox center) cannot leave. The legislators present all appeared to be in favor of examining the possibility of designated jail beds for this purpose. Currently an outside firm is in the process of conducting a study on the jail, and in the coming months it will make recommendations designed to decrease the jail population if possible while increasing efficiency. Captain Ray Bunce, administrator of the Tompkins County Jail, agreed that beds for individuals in the midst of a medical problem are a good idea, though it could be costly.

“To have twenty-four-hour medical super vision would mean hiring more nurses,” said Bunce. Still, he believes it’s a potentially worthwhile expense.

Currently the jail institutes a 24-hour watch on inmates if they fear there may be a medical problem, but it’s by a regular prison guard, not a medical professional. For very serious cases a jail employee has to accompany the inmate to the hospital, where they must stay with the inmate until he or she is released, monopolizing that employee’s time. The jail has one nurse who works 40 hours per week. Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are offered by community volunteers once a week, but other than that there are no programs offered to drug addicts and alcoholics.

Bunce added that he believes adding a medical wing or beds for those who need to detox is a doable proposition, and it’s not an uncommon thing in jails these days, he said, citing Broome County’s recently expanded medical unit.

Reminiscing On 26 Years In Affordable Housing

Shared Service Dialogue Starts

aul Mazzarella, Executive Director of affordable housing developer and purveyor Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services (INHS), has announced he will retire at the end of 2017.

The Ithaca Times took some time to sit down with Paul and ref lect on the successes and impact he has had on the community and what he anticipates for the organization in the future.

Ithaca Times: When you started, INHS was more or less about community renewal: the same mission these neighborhood housing service organizations were founded in the vein of. When you inherited leadership here, what did the housing picture look like in Ithaca?

Paul Mazzarella: Ithaca was facing a lot of the same problems lots of cities in the northeast and midwest were facing in that there was a loss in homeowners moving to the suburbs... So when I started here, a big part of our effort was to try to promote home ownership, whether by supporting existing homeowners through home improvement projects or recruiting new homeowners to move back into the city. People can’t imagine that today because every neighborhood in the city seems like a vibrant place and people want to live here, but 25 years ago it was a hard sell to try to get people to buy homes in the Southside and Northside neighborhoods.

That’s completely f lipped over time: now we’re facing a problem where we’re rea l ly desirable, housing prices have gone up and we’re facing a real housing affordability problem. That’s the issue. We do a lot of trend analysis on what’s going on in the City of Ithaca and, just for example, we’ve found t hrough track ing t he number of houses available at less than $150,000

-- an easy threshold to decide if it’s an affordable house or not for a lot of people -- we found there are very few houses at that price. Last year, there wasn’t a single one except for those INHS bought and sold. So we’re finding lower-income people are being forced out of the city, out of the urban areas and are finding housing in much more remote areas.

IT: And what exactly were the selling points you had to go on in the early ‘90s?

PM: We were saying “hey, wouldn’t it be great to live in a community where you know your neighbors, hang out on your front porch, walk from place to place, close to stores and entertainment…” It was just better than living in a rural place where you had to use your car every time you wanted to go somewhere. And now Ithaca’s become known for those traits -people love living here because it’s such a small city and quite accessible for p e o ple.

IT: It’s interesting

that you had to use something that seems so in demand today as a selling point to get people to move here.

PM: Well, if you don’t have a longer term perspective as a newcomer, it’s almost hard to believe we were ever at that point. We also had a series of things happen that were kind of distressing. In the mid-90s, t here was actua l ly a crack cocaine epidemic here and in a lot of other places, and that resulted in a lot of really negative perceptions in the City of Ithaca for many people. They thought it was a dangerous place to live. We overcame that, and things actually got better.

We still have issues with drugs and crime here, but nothing like what we used to have.

IT: Well today’s Ithaca is a far cry from yesterday’s Ithaca in plenty of ways. For INHS too, the last few years seem to really have been heating up for you guys, having 210 Hancock pass and consolidating with Better Housing For Tompkins County.

Is there anything else you see that has begun to accelerate in the last couple of years?

PM: What people see is what we build. What they don’t see is how our organization is changing internally. The big changes are our business model has become much more sophisticated and complicated, primarily because we’ve gotten involved in much bigger real estate projects. When I started, for example, our real estate development consisted of renovating and then selling five or six houses a year to firsttime home buyers. That was what we ca lled our housing recycling program.

It was a lot of work to do that then. Now we’re building these really expensive and sophisticated projects. Right now, we have about $35 million in real estate projects under construction and another $20 million poised to start..It’s much different than the business model we used to use.

A public information session on the progress of an ongoing report was held Monday, yielding reaction from the public on the possible restructuring of local law enforcement.

The Law Enforcement Shared Services study began in early January and its targeted date for final publication is currently some time in June, though that is subject to change. The report is still in its early stages, essentially reviewing the policies and practices of police departments in Cayuga Heights, the City of Ithaca, Tompkins County, Dryden and Groton and gauging public opinion. It was announced at the meeting that Trumansburg Police Department had declined to participate in the study. Some departments have already begun implementing aspects of shared services just on their own, Bishop said.

Police in Groton and Dryden no longer respond 24/7, having decided to pass calls on to the better-staffed county police at certain times.

Audience reaction was fairly muted, with most happy that there was a venue to voice opinions but without the proper amount of information to support or reject the potential consolidation.

General police reform suggestions were heard, but it is unclear how much those would actually be factored into the conducting of the study, at least at this early stage. There were also concerns raised about what consolidation might do to community policing and the recently enacted sanctuary legislation, specifically whether the county’s bill or Ithaca’s own legislation, which contain some differences, would be adopted.

The next meeting was not announced, though Bishop said there would at least be more information sessions during the next stage of the study, called the ‘options phase’. These will be held when CGR is ready to present the public the options moving forward for consolidation, and the effects it would have, positive and negative.

We at The Ithaca Times still had to work on laying out the issue last Tuesday, and it was particularly nice to cap off a hectic production day with good company instead of cooped up at home.

Heard&Seen ▶ On Monday night, the Downtown Ithaca Alliance’s director, Gary Ferguson, said his team will be traveling to Rochester and Albany to recruit a prospective replacement for the recently-closed kitchen supply store, Now You’re Cooking, downtown. Word has it, they’re looking at eight such candidates, four of which are in those two cities. We’ll see how things go, and fingers crossed. ▶ At that same meeting, we got an update from Cornell University representative Joel Molina regarding the university’s next president, Martha Pollack.

Word has it, she and her husband Ken are super stoked to move here and look forward on having a close relationship with the downtown Ithaca community. Vague, but we’ll take it.

ast week’s Ithaca Times Our Opinion column claimed the March 11th town hall at Southside Community Center was “ignorance vs. ignorance.” A more apt judgment would have been “informed compassion versus deceitful greed.”

To say it was all ignorance is to diminish the protest and excuse the thief. This is similar to putting climate change science on equal legitimacy with its corporate-funded deniers, or evolution on par with creationism.

Under normal circumstances a town hall is supposed to be a Q&A session between constituents and their representatives. But these are not normal times. Tom Reed was the vice chair of the Trump transition team.

Through his deeply supportive relationship with this administration, he has positioned himself squarely on the wrong side of history. The morality of his judgment is in question.

Evidenced by today’s most successful countries and agreed upon by a majority of Americans when polled on the issues; conclusively, a society governed with compassionate values results in stability. The

enlightened government works to resolve racial tension, it favors diplomacy to military solutions in international dispute, it taxes the wealthy to provide education, healthcare and environmental protection, it prioritizes equality, justice and the rule of law. A government and mixed economy focused on creating a healthier place to raise our children is rewarded for this investment twenty years later with better governors, better innovation and better businesses. Conversely, a corporate government focuses on quarterly returns for shareholders. It has no vision of future generations and thus should have no place at the table.

The social contract is fragile and the current administration is demonstrating aggressive attempts to break it. When it breaks, a functional civilization works to right the ship with acts of resistance, if not rebellion.

To chant “this is what democracy looks like” is a slight misrepresentation. Rather, this is what rebellion looks like — when tempered with civility. Prior to the town hall, plenty of individuals and organizers decidedly encouraged civil discourse. However, there were as many others who sought to disrupt contin u ed on page 7

That group functioned from 1899 and its local leader Juanita Breckenridge Bates was also a Vice President of the New York Suffrage Association. She is honored in the naming of Breckenridge House, erected by Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services at the corner of North Cayuga and Seneca Streets, the site of the Women’s Community Building. There were suffrage groups elsewhere in the county, two in the Town of Groton. These less remembered efforts are the shoulders upon which we all stand.

There have been other mothers of our efforts to bring equality and fairness and justice to our county, state and nation. Let’s honor them all.

The assembly’s proposed budget summary was released last week and exceeds the governor’s spending proposal by $1.5 billion. All in all, the plan calls for a total of $163.6 billion in spending for the 2017-2018 fiscal year which runs from April to March. The Assembly’s plan calls for a $1.8 billion increase in education funding, raises the cap on grants from the Tuition Assistance Program for SUNY schools, and several million dollar increases to infrastructure funding. Hearings to unify the proposals from the senate, assembly and governor continue through next week where legislators hope to turn out successful budget by the March 31st deadline.

The Senate also proposed its proposed budget plan this week.

The Senate did not release a formal document like the assembly, but Senator O’Mara’s office did provide several highlights including several billion dollars in funding to increase quality water initiatives, sustained full funding for the state Environmental Protection Fund and a reject of the governor’s plan to cut $12 million in agricultural programs. Both the senate and the assembly plans share a great deal of common ground including funding for clean energy solution, increases to education funding and infrastructure spending.

If people are yelling at Tom Reed it is because they hear his support for this failed model of civilization. To his credit, he doesn’t hide his convenient faith in trickle-down economics —he touts it. His folly is that more people are aware of the con than ever before.

Nobody wants to admit they’ve been conned, so it will take more than pointed intelligent criticisms alongside these noisy protests. No matter how sloppy it might appear the intention is to build bridges within the middle and lower classes and between a cleverly divided citizenry. There is little ignorance to be found in a movement whose legacy is ancient and continual.

Congressman Reed announced he would be supportive of changes that would New York to lower property tax levies by requiring Medicaid funding to be lifted from the county level up to a state level expense. Medicaid is the largest line item on Tompkins county’s budgetary expenses, making up 25 percent of the county’s tax levy altogether.

Action on the legislation itself has not yet made public. Reed also cosponsored legislation this week that acknowledges the negative impacts of climate change and to support efforts to mitigate those effects moving forward. Sixteen other Republicans were also signed as initial supporters of the legislation, which is moreso symbolic rather than a teeth-baring plan for action.

The house will continue looking over President Trump’s proposed budget blueprint which preludes the full budget release in May. Additionally, the house intelligence committee is continuing to investigate claims from the White House that former President Obama had Trump Tower’s “wires tapped” during the election. Reed touched briefly on the matter at his last town hall a week ago in Pulteney.

Excellence Unclaimed Community Colleges – like TC3 – are having budget problems.

The reason why is tricky business.

t’s no secret higher education these days is a high dollar business, if a declining one.

As the economy has improved in recent years and well-paying skilled and unskilled labor jobs once scarce have become easier to come by, the need for a college degree has diminished since 2011’s all-time high of college enrollment postrecession, when 20.6 million students were pursuing a college degree. Though there were still more than 19 million people enrolled in a college or university in Fall 2016 according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center – a significant decrease from just four years earlier – the emphasis on the importance of a college degree still stands as a major cornerstone of modern society: according to the National Center For Education Statistics, enrollment today is still up more than 30 percent on figures from the start of the millennium.

As such, there has never been more student debt in this country than there is today: according to an analysis by the Federal Reserve, more than $1.4 trillion in active debt was held by students in 2015, far up from the $400 billion in the market just nine years earlier.

For all the talk of college affordability, it’s a wonder why the most cost-effective option in higher education – the humble community college – hasn’t been doing so well lately.

While college enrollment as a whole has seen a small dip but still, for the most part, remains healthy, smaller two year schools have struggled in attracting students in the years since the end of the Great Recession, on the whole seeing overall nationwide enrollment drop nearly 13 percent since the 2010 peak, more than five points higher than the decline seen by colleges as a whole.

This is a problem, especially for publiclysupported community colleges like Tompkins Cortland Community College where enrollment is directly tied to 85 percent of its funding.

What came of this was a perfect storm of events, creating a $2 million shortfall in the school’s budget for this coming year.

“I always joke, ‘when enrollment gets a cold, our budget gets pneumonia,’” said the college’s president of 23 years, Carl Haynes.

“This year, we got double pneumonia.”

The Numbers

Like most colleges in the country, 20112012 was a big year for TC3. The college gave out 748 degrees that year – its largest class ever – and boasted an enrollment of more than 5,200 students across its various programs, be it summer school or certificate programs, associate’s-track degrees or concurrent enrollment classes in local high schools. Five years later, that picture has changed significantly.

Where 2011-12 was the cap of several years of growth for the college, Haynes said, the past five years have seen overall enrollment (including those in for-credit classes in the area high schools and summer school, which have done quite well in some cases) decline nearly 12 percent while core enrollment – i.e. the students attending in the fall and spring semesters – has dropped 30 percent to 3,700 students.

The reason why this is a problem is tied to the complex financial picture for community colleges, moreso than their competing sectors of the higher education landscape. For TC3’s $41.6 million budget, 40 percent of all support is supposed to derive from state aid, which is dispersed based

However, the proportion of state aid going to support the budget has, for the most part, changed very little, with the base level aid rate sitting at just $22 higher than it was nine years ago, for a total of just $2,697 in funding per full time equivalent student, for a total of $10.5 million: just 23 percent of TC3’s budget.

From there, you have the funding the school gets from its sponsoring counties, each of which gets charged based on the number of its residents who decide to attend school at TC3, each county’s bill based on a formula set by the state. Then there’s the lump sum of cash given by the primary sponsoring counties – in this case, Tompkins and Cortland Counties – based on an arbitrary 60-40 balance which changes, traditionally, with the fiscal health of either county at that given time and the amount of

money available from each county’s respective property tax levies, typically growing up to three percent per year.

Last year, Cortland paid 34 percent of that share while Tompkins paid approximately 66 percent of the $4.6 million appropriated to TC3.

“There have been a couple years where the counties had frozen their contribution,” said Joe Mareane, the Tompkins County administrator. “Last year, in fact, the amount of money contributed by the two counties was the same as it was the year before.”

college’s operating costs are backed by Tompkins and Cortland County, despite a more than half-million dollar funding boost since 2008.

And the rest of the budget? That comes from tuition payments (just under $4,800 for this coming year, a $140 increase from last year, for an estimated $21 million in revenue) and, like has happened in four of the last five years, money from the college’s own savings.

And still, the college found itself $2 million short.

larger colleges have been competing for students they once otherwise wouldn’t have.

State-operated campuses and four year campuses in general have been lowering their SAT requirements (some have even done away with them) in order to allow students in. As a result, many colleges are boasting their “largest classes ever” comprised, in part, by students who were once likely going to an open enrollment community college. Because of this, community colleges now have to compete with larger schools for the students who were – as short a time as five years ago, Haynes said – once considered to be sure bets.

“We know this is happening. The SUNY provost even admitted that is happening,” Haynes said. “Community colleges are kind of a sector at the start of the higher education hierarchy, and we’ve been hit with a sort of perfect storm that all hit us disproportionately to any sort of sector.”

Recruitment and marketing has become a big part of addressing this, the college taking on social media campaigns and pre-

demand for nurse’s aides, which are taught through non-credit level training courses at the school. There are the traditional blue collar jobs, working in trades or in warehouses, even as truck drivers, all jobs that don’t need associate’s degrees.

To stay relevant to the needs of the market, the community college almost has to be a mirror to the labor force, keeping pace with the demand for trained, qualified graduates in fields pertinent to the needs of “right now.” To try and meet these ever-changing demands, the college supports degree programs outlined by an advisory board, which takes pulse of the local and state economy to determine what areas would best serve – and be best attended by – the community. A course in applied technology, for instance, has been proposed by the board and is set to be approved by SUNY as part of TC3’s efforts to meet a rising demand for lab science technicians in the biotech and 3D printing fields. They opened Coltivare in downtown Ithaca as a banner culinary teaching lab, and have created majors in things like wine Th e

marketing and medical research to meet the demands of local employers.

But, technology moves fast and – like the whims of the market – what catches on and what doesn’t is unpredictable.

“The operative end of this is whether or not something will work, and you never know,” said Haynes. “You just have to try things and see what happens. That’s sometimes the best market research there is. It doesn’t cost a lot of money to put together a curriculum and begin to offer it.”

One sample of this would be one of TC3’s newest associates programs in entrepreneurship, which began as a single course and eventually grew into a multi-section offering that eventually developed into a whole suite of courses, from marketing and accounting to base legal knowledge.

To meet the demand of some newer biotech firms like Kionix over the past decade, the college brought on a researcher in biotechnology from Cornell to develop a curriculum for them and head a certification program in the field. Back in the ‘80s and ‘90s, the college offered degrees in things like travel tourism, back when a thing called travel agents were still in existence and later, fields like computer forensics, before cybersecurity took over the field and made those lessons obsolete.

To help diversify the revenues of small college and boost their versatility, SUNY is looking to bring about something called micro credentials, a small but very specific set of courses to prepare people for a very specific skill set, such as building familiarity in a certain type of software or in an emerging area of the criminal justice field. While still extremely early in its development as the state seeks a means to accredit these fast-moving curricula, these programs have promise in that, with “get it while you can” sources of revenue, colleges like TC3 can remake themselves into something akin to a regional training center and, in part, an additional vehicle of economic development for an area. Even today, Haynes said something similar could be put together “in a day” if they wanted to, offering training programs to say, a local business’s employees, in a certain skill over a several week seminar conducted by the college. It’s a quick way to pick up occasional revenue here and there in small pieces but – fundamentally – the college’s overall, longterm enrollment in popular majors is still the magic bullet to the college’s sustained fiscal health.

“Ultimately, if there isn’t a need, we can’t do it,” Haynes said. “We have a business to run too.”

was perusing the Ithaca College Athletics website, and a look at the men’s lacrosse page made me flash back to my Little League career.

My dad’s boss was the coach of the local “dynasty,” so when I was old enough to play, I was “drafted” by and suited up for the team that often steamrolled its opponents. As a new player, I was plunked in the outfield, and when the score was 10-0, and

our pitcher was dominant ... well, let’s say I picked a lot of daisies.

When I saw that the (undefeated at 6-0) Ithaca College laxers were beating teams by scores of 19-1, 19-2 and 19-3, I decided to call Winston Wenham, the Ithaca High grad who is a starting defenseman for the Bombers. I asked Winston if it was boring to stay on the defensive side of the field and watch the offense light it up, and he

said, “Actually, in the RPI game we were behind by a couple of go a l s (IC won 14-9), but our team philosophy dictates that it’s always about making the next play.

Certainly, it’s easier to play with a lead, but we’re focused on what we need to do next.”

laughed and said, “Last year we had a really good defense and we got plenty of publicity, but even if we didn’t, the people that matter — like our coaches — know how important we are to the team.” He added, “I think I speak for all my teammates when I say we don’t play for the accolades.”

Winston was a member of the powerhouse Ithaca High teams (he graduated in 2012), and after a year of prep school, he followed his father, Mark Wenham, to suit up for Syracuse. (Mark was a member of Syracuse’s 1983 national championship team.) Winston redshirted his first year at Syracuse, played some the next year and then made the decision to transfer to Ithaca College. While he joins fellow Ithaca High alumnus Grant Osadchey on the Bombers’ roster, the two never saw the field together at IHS. (Though they did play a lot of tournaments together.) “Grant transferred to Ithaca prior to his senior year,” Wenham offered, “and I was gone by then.”

Wenham is having a lot of fun, and not just because the Bombers keep putting up the big numbers and piling up the wins.

He also loves the way Jeff Long runs the program, as evidenced by his assertion that “Even when the ball in in our end of the field, we’re all encouraged to make a play, start a fast break or take a shot if it’s there.

Our style of play involves all ten players, and for example, in the game against Bowdoin, (fellow defenseman) Keith Morrissey got within 8 or 10 yards of the goal before getting an assist, and I got an assist from nearly behind the goal.” He continued, “It’s great to know that such plays are not just an option, the coaches encourage us to play fast and take chances. They know we’ll do more good than harm. It also helps to have that element of surprise, as they (opponents) are expecting us to just dump the ball off.”

Given he sat out a year, Wenham is only a junior from an eligibility standpoint.

He will get his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in May, and since the Empire 8 allows graduate students to compete, Winston plans to get his M.B.A. next year and play his final season. “That was a big consideration for my parents and me,” he said. “They said there was no way they were paying for a year of college just so I could play lacrosse, so the fact that Ithaca College has an M.B.A. program was super important.” Sounding like a young man who has had plenty of conversations with a former collegiate player, Winston said, “I definitely want to use all of my eligibility, because I know that when it’s over, it’s over.”

istening to the music of Simrit Kaur is like journeying through the vast depths of inner space: the humanness keeps you grounded and the mystical resonance marks your ascension. This is world music with discernment and vision. There are psychedelic angles to it, funk bits and spiritual layers, and a haunting warmth that opens your heart. Your mind escapes, but is resonant. There’s meaning and freedom here. The talented musician, producer, yoga and Reiki practitioner is a force of positivity. Her energy, like her voice, is all lighting and smiles, authentic and infectious.

“I feel like a walking recording studio,” Simrit recently mused. “I’ll hear a song in my head or some sort of orchestration, and I’ll quickly record it. Music is a constant force. It’s one of the most crucial things in the world right now. It has the power to unite people under a universal language, and we all need that special connection right now.”

Simrit’s music is pure feeling: a sensuous nature rules its divinity. It’s technically and structurally rigid as well, and this is where the magic takes place. Music has been part of Simrit’s totality since childhood. A classically and modern trained musician, she’s developed a sound and radius unique unto itself. You won’t mistake this stuff for your typical new age beat. There are infinite shadows at work here.

“When I hear the term new-age, I walk the other way,” Simrit explained. “Our music is actually progressive and filled with a lot of different forms of world, fusion and spiritual music. The ancient Byzantine music I studied as a kid has been really fundamental as well. There’s a real darkness to that stuff. Not a negative darkness, just this really intense mystical vibe.”

“My lifestyle has a big role in my music,” she explained. “Yoga in general keeps me clear and grounded, it gives me vital energy, and exercises the brain. It’s like doing push-ups and jumping jacks for the mind. We all experience an exquisite reality, and music is something that exists positively in everyone.”

As a world traveler and truly modern individual, Simrit’s take on duality and separatism, particularly here in the United States, is both encouraging and logical. Born in Greece, and raised in a rich Greek culture in South Carolina, her mindfulness sows her direct resonance: open and insightful.

“One thing about traveling the word is that you really get the sense that the world is full of kind people,” she noted. “The majority of the people in this world want to love and be loved.

And when you travel you really see this. Everybody wants to be a part of something, and that’s what culture accomplishes: it gives people a sense of an eternal home. I think all the political stuff that’s going on right now is actually a blessing in disguise. You see people actually coming together all over the world, in amazing ways right now.

Sometimes it takes a lot of pain to reach a higher and more meaningful place. Culture takes a long time to build, and the US is still very young in this sense.”

Simrit’s music is in many ways like that infinite family of togetherness and culture. Healing and soaring, it has a special power to it. There are layers of absolution that fuse each bubble of tone, each melody and jaunt. It calms and attunes like yoga, and redirects. her career: besotted with her first novel, he has plans to make her famous and simultaneously gain some literary cachet for himself. Flashy, cocksure Evan is sort of 21st century Mephistopheles to Olivia’s hesitant Faust, as he lures her away from the pleasures of print into the faster currents of the Twitterverse.

The elements may be familiar, even shop-worn, but Eason has a thrilling way of playing them out (especially in the second act), captured in fine detail in Rachel Lampert’s sizzling, finely-tuned staging at the Kitchen Theatre. Not only has Lampert given her actors free reign to keep turning the tables on each other; she has staged some truly arousing fore-play scenes (scored by sound designer Sergey Levitskiy.)

Darian Dauchan and LeeAnne Hutchinson smolder in the roles, in a dance of seduction and betrayals. Dauchan struts with a beguiling self-assurance, and disarming directness. Each time he scores a victory in his duel of wits with Hutchinson, a gleeful boy’s smile breaks out, as if he just shot a perfect basket. It’s a tricky role, as Eason requires us to at least be temporarily rooting for a self-admitted “dick.” Dauchan nails it, preening with all the pride of a cock of the walk, as he lures Olivia into both bed and his schemes, yet also displaying flashes of entitlement, rage and pain.

Olivia is a fantastically written role: a complex middle-aged woman who is smart, witty, vulnerable, and proceeding on her own term. While self-reliant, she

is also initially extremely guarded, even wounded, especially by the fame game she can’t seem to play within, all the marketing and self-promotion that goes with getting her writing out into the world.

And she has no compunctions about enjoying sex. She goes into her relationship with Ethan with eyes open—almost.

Hutchinson is a marvel: wry, quick on her feet, probing, a tiny bit caustic, and then playful, languorous and generous with her delight. The betrayals of the second act allow for a fine-edged fury. It’s a constantly shifting performance, alive to the rhythms of each scene, full of vitality.

David L. Arsenault’s Michigan cabin and Chicago apartment are detailed, livable and sensuous, particularly under the tender lighting of Tyler M. Perry. Lisa Boquist finds just the right mix of casual and styled costuming with her accustomed flair.

Eason plays with the genres of romcom and psychological thriller (the smiling stalker), but her coup is to make it Olivia’s story by the play’s end. In a sense, it is a sentimental education, but this time it is the older woman who emerges the wiser. •

To Defy The Laws of Tradition Prog sci-fi act goes beyond the horizon

hen we’re playing live, it’s all about the balance”, bassist John Ferrara of NYC progfusionists Consider The Source noted last Friday before a Raleigh, NC gig. “Each show there’s a sea of varying fans out there—prog fans, metal fans, jazz fans, jam fans—and we always make sure it’s well rounded.”

Listening to the sci-fi themed trio is like tripping out to the last forty years of progressive and technical music: all long form, acute and wild. These guys

have a unique angle, incorporating disparate branches of Middle Eastern and Indian melodies into their liquid soup of intensity and prowess. The band channels the immediate bravado of Mahavishnu Orchestra, the mysticism and mindfulness of Ravi Shankar, and the wild abandon of the maddening free-jazz group Last Exit, all the while maintaining a dialogue that is honest, exploratory and unpredictable. With all their insane chops, the band is amazingly warm and loose.

“I think it’s our approach to composition that allows for such space and comfort,” Ferrara said. “We don’t try and think too strategically about our songs, there’s a trust factor built in there that allows us to breathe and maneuver freely. If I bring a song into the studio and have an idea of how it’s supposed to

sound, the other guys might take it and rearrange it, but I know they’ll always make it better [laughs].”

Ferrara plays the bass with a legendary confidence: epically adept at all forms of technique and swagger.

But it’s his songwriting prowess that’s perhaps his greatest asset. Many of the band’s songs wax and wan to his nuanced tone and melody. The band’s newest record, 2015’s World War Trio (Parts II and III), showcases Ferrara’s deft use of arrangement and timbre: challenging, heightening and morphing with guitarist Gabriel Marin and drummer Jeff Mann’s monumental extensions.

“I’ve always been attracted to unorthodox bassists,” Ferrara explained. “Guys like Les Claypool, Victor Wooten and Jaco Pastorius. These guys are all technically amazing, but they’re great innovators first and foremost.

They brought different ideas and methods to the instrument ...

When Gabriel or Jeff brings in an idea, I’m immediately thinking what sort of connection to it I can make.”

The band’s a force of equilibrium in both sound and substance. With such varying motifs and diverse sensibilities, they sort of represent the city they come from. NYC is the musical capital of the universe and Consider The Source holds the city’s underground cup of mystical brew—all simmering and stewing from each subway portal and back alleyway—tenfold. They define diversity: in approach and construction.

“You hear all this variance and obscure styles in our music, but it’s really just being New Yorkers that have influenced us the most,” Ferrara admitted.

“The city is one giant fusion, and like our music, it’ll never be completely defined.

As an instrumental band, we’re letting our emotions come across in a complete way. When we started the band, we just wanted to play, and I think the evolution and the decision to remain completely instrumental, is a by-product of that initial freedom.”

When Consider The Source get heavy they’re metal giants, when spiritual and psychedelic, they morph the mystical rain of the universe. The band is its own inverted specimen: daring and innovative and never willing to accept stagnation.

Drift off into the stratosphere with them this Friday: you’ll be epically glad you did. •

A Special Classical Lineup A great concert for Baroque Orchestra

YS Baroque’s next concert, “The Sweetest Sounds,” takes place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 25, in Ithaca’s Unitarian Church. On the roster are eight instrumentalists, plus soprano soloist, performing a program of “simply beautiful music” by Handel, J. S. Bach, Vivaldi and Thomas Arne. The pre-concert talk begins at 6:45.

Artistic director Deborah Fox told me last week that this program is “unusual for us, as it contains well-known composers.”

It is also unusual because it involves many instrumentalists — I suggested “big band” and she responded with “little baroque orchestra.” All the musicians but one are familiar — violinist Boel Gidholm, violist Dan Elyar, cellist David Morris, NYS Baroque former artistic director and bassist Heather Miller Lardin, harpsichordist Michael Beattie and, naturally, Fox, who plays theorbo, the long-necked lute. New to NYS Baroque audiences is Swedish-Finnish violinist Marika Holmqvist, a “beautiful, expressive player.” Also in the orchestra is flutist Steven Zohn, who like Lardin holds

Cornell DMA in Performance. In addition he is a soloist, along with clear-voiced and highly popular soprano Laura Heimes.

This concert, with recognized composers, features less-familiar works; however, “We don’t play that stuff everybody knows,” Fox admits. It opens with a Handel Concerto Grosso (Op. 6, no. 7), giving the orchestra a chance “to warm up the audience.” It ends “with a kind of quirky hornpipe piece.” Then comes Bach’s solo cantata “Ich habe genug” (I am content), BWV82a.

Quite familiar in its original form, this work was composed in 1727 for bass voice and oboe. Heimes and Zohn will present a version for soprano and flute, with continuo and strings, made by Bach himself and then performed several times.

Heimes returns after intermission with two quiet selections by Handel. They are from a collection called Nine German Arias, all with melody and instrumental accompaniment. The only Handel works with German texts, they are set to the poetry of Barthold Heinrich Brockes, an Enlightenment figure noted as the first in German

literary history to cultivate nature in his verses. These beautiful arias are very different in character. The first, “Süsse Stille” (Sweet Stillness), is quiet and contemplative and will be performed transposed for soprano and flute plus continuo. The second, “Meine Seele” (My Soul), written for violin, soprano, and continuo, is much happier and more extraverted. Both convey reflections on the way nature affects human beings and is a manifestation of God. A Vivaldi flute concerto called “Il gran mogol” features soloist Zohn with the entire orchestra. Fox suggests she might just play something other than theorbo, because the part “looks delicious on the baroque guitar.” Because the manuscript of this piece was discovered only in 2010, this promises to be completely unfamiliar music for the audience.

Closing the program is The Morning by 18th-century theater composer Thomas Arne, who wrote many operas, masques and oratorios. He was favorably regarded in his time and often compared to Henry Purcell. This work is from a collection of six cantatas for voice (soprano in this case) and instruments, set to verses by the composer.

In five movements, the very quiet opening Andante, “The glitt’ring Sun begins to rise,” is simply “exquisite.” The following Allegro features the flute imitating bird song. This cantata, in the English pastoral tradition, perfectly exemplifies the concert’s “sweetest sounds.”

Fox is “very happy with this line-up of special musicians” who have played many times together. Her favorite piece is “Ich

habe genug,” but she said “there is no better musical description of the sun rising” than the opening of The Morning. “I love all [the songs]; they are all my children.” An open rehearsal is on Thursday, 2:30–5:30 p.m., at the church — “People can come in and see how we put things together.” But do come and hear the sweetest sounds on Saturday evening. •

Visiting in with the talented Jeri Sager

J

eri Sager is a Broadway veteran, actor and recording artist. She’ll be singing some her favorite show tunes in her revue This Broad’s Way at 7:30 p.m. March 25 at CRT Downtown. Sager has played Grizabella in Cats, Fantine in Les Miserables and Eva Peron in Evita. She performs all over the U.S., England, the Caribbean, Japan, Mexico and Canada, and has had the honor of singing for Presidents Jimmy Carter and George W. Bush, Pope John Paul II and while with the USO, for both American and British troops. She spoke to the Ithaca Times about her show, her influences and one backstage story that you won’t hear anywhere else.

Ithaca Times: Tell me about the show you’re going to be doing at CRT,

JS: Sure. I’m a Broadway actress, I starred in several Broadway shows; I’m doing a concert of the roles I’ve played. And then the second half is more Broadway that became popular music. There’s a great variation there, so I can kind of sing what I want to sing. I tell stories about people I’ve met, people I’ve worked with. It’s fun and really light-hearted. At the same time … you’ll laugh, you’ll cry.

IT: [laughs] Tell me some stories about people you’ve worked with.

JS: I talk about Theodore Bikel a little bit, I talk about Katherine Hepburn a little bit, I talk about Jerome Robbins a little bit, I talk about Topol a little bit. I talk about working in Cats. I talk about Les Mis. IT: So you’re part of the Cats Broadway legacy. How long was that on Broadway?

JS: 17 years, 18 years. Yeah, it’s a cool

thing. It’s cool that I’m part of that.

You know, it’s a cool life.

IT: What kind of music did you like growing up?

JS: You can hear the influences: Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli. You know, the big belters. That’s what I do: I’m a belter. I started listening to Judy Garland. And I loved Julie Andrews, who I was later hired to stand by for in Victor/Victoria, for the tour. It’s not on my C.V. because that’s when she lost her voice, so I never did it. But I was hired because [laughs] it’s a great story, actually. I went in, and it was my fourth callback, and I watched the movie [Victor/Victoria] because I hadn’t seen it for a long time. In this scene there’s a little bit of business, she goes into the restaurant and she meets Toddy, she has a cockroach and right as she’s leaving, she’s in high dudgeon; she’s sort of like, “I can’t believe you would accuse me of doing this.”

And she walks out and she turns around, and she trips. It’s either she’s weak because she hasn’t eaten, or she trips and it’s just funny. And she turns around and kind of huffs out the door. So I read the scene, did the high note, she breaks the glass, turned around, walked out, tripped, and sort of straightened up and kept walking. And I heard this big “BOOM” on the table, and this voice came out, “Finally, somebody gets it!” And I kind of turned around, and they were hustling me out the door. I was like, “Who’s that guy?” And I get outside, and Patrick Vacariello, who is an extremely

well known musical director, was like, “Oh, girl, you nailed that!” And I was like, “Who was that guy that screamed out?” And he goes, “That was Blake Edwards!” Julie Andrews’ husband, the movie director. And I was like, “Oh my God you’re kidding, I stole his direction.” And he was like, “I know, it was brilliant.” I never would have done that if I’d known that he was there.

And he was like, “Thank God you didn’t know, ’cause I can guarantee you’ve got this role.” •

Film and the Art of Joy

An Ithaca filmmaker and some laughs from the past

t’s a very busy time for Cornell professor and filmmaker Robert H. Lieberman.

He’s just back from Bangkok, where he held screenings of his latest documentary, Angkor Awakens, for the Foreign Correspondents Club. The film opens in New York City April 28th and will play in all major U.S. cities. The BBC picked up broadcast rights for next year. He’s also been commuting to Paris, where his novel The Nazi’s, My Father & Me is being turned into an animated film by 5-time Academy Award–nominated producer Didier Brunner (The Triplets of Belleville). And on March 25, his 2002 feature Green Lights,

“We had 300 people involved,” Lieberman said. “We had a call out for extras, and these crowds would appear. It’s like the old days of the movies, when Ithaca was a movie center.”

Indeed, Ithaca’s silent movie history and the Wharton studios figure into the plot of Green Lights, and Lieberman used silent film clips throughout the movie.

The film utilizes Lieberman’s documentary technique to create an odd hybrid of narrative and documentary. Co-producer and co-director Slawomir Grunberg has

Duck Soup wraps up a strong Cornell Cinema film series called “Demagogues”, and truth be told, compared to today’s political scene, it plays like reality TV. I’m a firm believer that we should screen Duck Soup every time we elect new “leaders”. This Marx Brothers flick is a Rorschach farce, and it’s always good to see Duck Soup at a time when nothing feels funny, or when normal leaps past funny into absurdity. One of the best recent birthday presents I gave myself last year was a screening of Duck Soup.

A good friend had just lectured me that movies were a dying art form for young people, so it was especially gratifying to see the theater packed with kids who were already Marx Brothers freaks. (Sorry, parents, Groucho, Chico and Harpo have taught another generation not to take

Green Lights tells the story of Bob Beeman (John FitzGibbon), a lowly location scout on the bottom rung at a New York film company, who is sent to Ithaca to scout locations for a film. From the moment he arrives, everyone mistakes him for a powerful producer, and the locals come out of the woodworks to audition for him. Two struggling writers (Daniel Dresner and Shawn Randall) pitch Beeman their latest project, a musical called Julio, and Beeman decides to take the plunge and be the producer everyone thinks he is.

With the exception of some pick-up shots in New York City and Los Angeles, Green Lights was filmed entirely in Ithaca. You’ll see assemblyman Marty Luster, former mayor Ben Nichols, a real Rotary Club meeting, lots of Ithaca locations and local talent.

The idea had been percolating for a decade. It came after Lieberman found a New York Times article about a kid who had commandeered a taxi and was driving it around town, picking up fares. He turned

extensive experience shooting docs and shot the whole movie using only available light. There’s a lot of music aside from the musical, as Beeman wanders through the Farmers Market and Dewitt Park. I even spotted a former housemate as part of a vocal group that materializes to perform for Beeman at the Comfort Inn. “We had auditions, and we used the auditions in the film,” Lieberman recalls.

Aside from a core group of professional actors, actual officers played police and real lawyers played lawyers in the film. Beeman said the audience could see the real sheriff and state police on screen.

Jesse Krebs wrote the score and David Kent wrote the songs. “My next project, before I die, is going to be a musical. Like La La Land, but better. I’m used to Ethel Merman belting it out.”

Green Lights, which screened around the U.S. and foreign venues, hasn’t been shown locally since its premiere in 2002, and Lieberman is eager to have the chance to show it again.

After one taste, you’ll duck soup for the rest of your life. •

Duo’s newest Noodlehead book is a grand vision

T

he powerhouse storytelling duo Martha Hamilton and Mitch Weiss has been blowing up the children’s circuit for almost four decades. They’ve pioneered their hilarious style with a deft looseness and impenetrable joy. It’s the unique rapport the two have that makes the stories they tell moving and memorable.

What started as a love for expression ended up being a career.

“It all started to snowball around 1984,” Hamilton said. “We were getting a lot of work in the public schools with our storytelling act and decided together to leave our jobs. And here we are today in our 37th year.”

Along the way, the terrific twosome — who works primarily under the title Beauty & The Beast Storytellers — has written and collaborated on over 20 books and taught close to 10,000 Ithaca third graders the art of storytelling. Hamilton and Weiss’ method is impressively substantial and impossibly important, especially considering the assault on public schools in the past decade. Their educational goals are akin to the kind of movements that go beyond the classroom and its measured practicality: it’s about totality for these guys.

“It’s very sad to see what’s happening in out country today,” Hamilton said. “What we’re aiming to teach the kids cannot be easily graded. The lessons we teach are as much about learning as they are about confidence and transparency.”

Hamilton and Weiss’ newest endeavor is the surreal and wondrous world of Noddlehead brothers Mac and Mac. Based partly around Hamilton and Weiss’ educational philosophy — which is showcased in the educational book Noodlehead Stories:

World Tales Kids Can Read & Tell — the new series features a collaboration with New York Times bestselling children’s book author and illustrator Tedd Arnold, who’s best known for the popular series The Fly Guy. Noodlhead Nightmares came out last year to widespread acclaim, and this year saw the release of the equally dynamic Noodleheads See The Future. Mac and Mac are sort of like a mix of Bart Simpson and Milhouse Van Houten, Abbot and Costello, and a children’s version of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s Step Brothers. It’s bust out funny, even for adults.

“It took us three years to get up the courage to send Ted our stuff,” Hamilton said.

“Noodlehead stories have been around since the dawn of man. It’s not about lessons per say with the Noodleheads books — though it does sort of teach logical thinking — it’s more about a sort of universal oneness in each and every one of us. Deep down, we’re all a bunch of Noodlheads at heart.”

Mac and Mac are the kind of characters destined for the big screen. As two actual macaroni pieces, the pair is so oblivious and slinky you lose sense of your surroundings as you follow their antics. And this is part of the magic. The ability to combine the ethereal and the grounded is where Hamilton and Weiss shine. Fun and joy and the sense of commonality reign supreme in their inspired visions, and working with Arnold has proved an astonishing fit. The physicality of Hamilton and Weiss’ approach has found a visual artist with the same sense of immediacy.

“Ted is the only artist that’s ever worked with us one and one,” Weiss said.

“In general the publisher doesn’t want you to work directly with the illustrator. The editor is always the go-between.”

“Right now we’re working on out third book for the Noodlehead series,” Hamilton added. “We’ll write the whole thing and send it Ted. He’ll send it back with some changes, and we’ll figure out how to make it all work. We’re very grateful and excited for the future.”

So are all third graders — scratch that — all humans, around the world. •

L

ocal author Denise Gelberg brings attention to the Iraq War, long after its end in her new novel, The Engagement. Gelberg is publishing this novel after three years of dedicated work, a third of which was completely devoted to research, and which involved illuminating conversations with Iraq War veterans.

She was inspired to write the story after witnessing young locals join the military, straying from their family’s expectations of them, and permanently altering the dynamics of their relationships, after being deployed to the Middle East. “It was these two young men who caused me to wonder how young people who have many paths open to them chose the path of military service.” She also naturally drew inspiration from the social and political landscape of Ithaca in her portrayal of the authentic but fictional town of Nero.

Similar in dynamics to Ithaca, Nero is portrayed as a progressive college town with a noticeable lack of support for both the Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan.

Done over the course of the last year, these paintings on paper are abstracted from the figure using gesture, shape and line to create images that allude to the figure without

The novel majorly follows the young, and frequently stubborn, couple Sunny and Tomas, who transition from ambitious college students to teacher and soldier respectively, during the novel. When the novel opens Sunny is a student at the ever-progressive liberal arts college, Vassar College, while Tomas is in his final year of the traditionally conservative West Point.

The dichotomy of the perspectives of the two universities is highlighted in their graduation ceremonies, as the speakers and audience members at the separate ceremonies hold few opinions on war in common. “He had to tell himself over and over again, as if repeating a mantra, “I’m here for Sunny. She was at West Point for me yesterday, and I’m here for her today.””

Their career goals stand apart as well, as Sunny anticipates a life in teaching and expects to pursue higher education as a post-grad, while Tomas plans to swiftly leave for the Officer Basic Course, then the Ranger School, to begin a lengthy career in the military. The Engagement consequentially explores the varying perspectives Americans held on the Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan, while demonstrating the dynamics created by these widely ranging opinions in relationships and families.

But Sunny and Tomas persist in their relationship and collectively overcome their differences in mindset and back-

The decision of Sunny and Tomas to marry immediately after college is met with concern and resistance from their parents and even the rabbi officiating their service, requiring them to regularly adapt defensive positions “It is true that we’re young, but whatever else may be undefined in our lives, one thing is certain: we want to spend our lives figuring it all out together.” Even as individuals they face struggles with their parent’s expectancies, as Sunny works to overcome the anticipated character traits associated with her name and Tomas struggles with his father’s lack of support for a military lifestyle. A lifestyle that readers are given a peek behind the curtain of, as Gelberg extensively describes its details and foundations.

The way in which Gelberg covers all elements of the military experience, from the Ring Ceremony at West Point to Ranger Training, is edifying and expansive. The information she gained from her independent research and her interviews with veterans is hard to ignore and makes for a very enlightening experience. While the emotional stress of being a soldier or knowing an individual in the military are consistently discussed, it is the objective realities of military life that are featured in the forefront.
