ome more noise arose late last week from the ongoing sta lemate bet ween the Ithaca College administration and the contingent faculty union, as negotiations were extended once again. The two parties will meet on March 8, 10, and 15 to continue their talks.

A contingent faculty member, Kurt Lichtmann, seemed to break ranks with his colleagues when he published an editorial in the new student outlet, The Chronicle, and the student newspaper, the Ithacan that questioned the contingent faculty’s decision to not release the raw numbers of their strike authorization vote held early last week. Lichtmann has been vocal, via several op-eds, throughout the process in his opposition to a contingent faculty strike, but also his acknowledgement that some faculty contracts need to be fixed by the school on an individual basis.

L i c h t m a n n’s c o n c e r n s hinged on one primary detail: what bar needed to be cleared by the union in order to legally authorize a strike? Lichtmann’s argument was based on an article from early February in the Ithacan, which stated that a simple majority of all contingent faculty members had to vote in support of a strike authorization in order to legally strike.

This is where things get a bit complicated. Lichtmann said he was also told by an SEIU representative that a super majority (two-thirds) of all contingent faculty was needed to legally call a strike.

A New Life For Old Machines

A

s a Cornel l technolog y specia l ist, A la n Heiman saw dozens of computers — whole labs full — discarded all at once, and with frightening regularity, because they had outlived their warranties. He thought that it didn’t make sense they should end up in a landfill when they were needed by so many people and often worked perfectly well, even though they were a little dated.

He began asking labs and libraries on campus to donate the machines instead, and with the help of Muna Ndulo, Cornell Law Professor, he shipped more than 100 computers to different locations in Africa.

The project was slow to start — each time he made a shipment he thought it would be his last — but eventually he realized the group had enough

volunteer support to become an ongoing initiative. “It just took off,” he said. a consta nt strea m of m achines

Neiman officially formed the Cornell Computer Reuse Association in 2006, organizing a group of volunteers around the mission to obtain used computers and donate them to worthy recipients.

From the very beginning there was a focus on sub-Saharan Africa, in part because Heiman was a teacher in Zambia for several years before he and his wife settled in Ithaca.

Cornell has donated about 3,220 used computers to the club over the years. About 50 percent of the machines are distributed by CCRA among

Usually computers come with a three or four-year warranty, Leonard explained, and after that they’re considered a liability. “They don’t want to deal with the cost of trouble shooting,” Heiman said.

The day we spoke with Heiman he had just received 30 computers from the Cornell’s Mann Library. “I got 30 the week before from Olin Library,” he said, “and the week before that I got a big batch from the Statler Hotel.”

“Frankly, I don’t need many more people to donate,” he added. “I need more people to help me get them out.”

2017 Election Potential TC3 Layoffs Follow A Familiar Trend PHOTOGRAPHER Season Begins

by The Ithaca Times, Haynes out lined severa l decisions made by administration dating back to a February 6 correspondence with the campus community, including delaying the search for a Dean of Instruction, declining salary increases for executive staff, eliminating all overtime and cutting several adjunct auxiliary positions. In addition, close to $100,000 in planned facilities spending has been put off.

Haynes ended his memo noting two opportunities to meet over idea s to reduce expenses in other ways and to meet with him directly in order to address their concerns. However, layoffs seem imminent.

Early retirement options have been floated to members of the three unions on campus and, after surveying the results, an accurate number of prospective layoffs should be determined sometime in midMarch.

Josh Dolan, the School and Com mu nit y Ga rdens Specialist for the Finger Lakes Region with Finger Lakes Eat Smart NY at CCE-Tompkins and a sugarmaker who goes by the moniker “Sapsquatch,” announced his run for Common Counci l representing Ithaca’s second ward – Ithaca’s largest, in terms of total voters – on Saturday. An independent, he will be challenging incumbent Democrat Joseph Murtagh, the second ward’s alderman since 2012 and communications coordinator for State Assembly woman Barbara Lifton.

Dolan’s candidacy would be a bit of a rarity as few races in recent years have been contested. (Elections in the city take place every two years, with one of each ward’s two Common Council seats up for grabs each round). In 2013, no race was contested and in 2011 just one race, a first ward matchup between current alderperson Cynthia Brock and independent Steven Williams, was a contest.

Meanwhile, one of the city’s seats on the county legislature is now up for grabs: after nearly a decade of public service, Carol Chock is hanging it up.

Chock, a Democrat, was first elected to the legislature in a special election in 2007 and has since been elected to two additional terms representing the neighborhoods of Belle Sherman, Bryant Park, South Hill, and portions of upper Collegetown and East Hill in county government.

Chock said her reasons for leaving are “medical and personal.” Chock said her aim when she entered the county legislature was to move the needle in Tompkins County, bringing another voice calling for social justice.

h e n To m p k i n s C o u nt y C o m mu nity College president Carl Haynes released an update on the college’s budgetary challenges last week, it came with the news that there would potentially be layoffs in order to thin out the faculty – the priciest slice of the budget – in order to make ends meet.

It turns out, TC3 is not alone.

Across the nation, many colleges are facing challenges in their budgets due to a mix of falling enrollment and a relative downturn in the economy.

According to an article in the Community College Review – the premier peer-reviewed quarterly addressing academic affairs in community colleges, – from last month, as a result of both a prospective rollback in Obama-era stimulus funding and a general trend of budget cuts at colleges nationwide, more and more colleges find t hemselves need ing to cut back.

For TC3, the story is a little bit different. Where many colleges – due to increased layoffs in other sectors, have seen enrollment rise for recessionproof majors, TC3 is facing a $2 million shortfall in its budget due, in part, to optimistic enrollment projections. To fix this, the college is looking to eliminate a number of positions to reduce the approxi-

mately $28 million in staffing and benefits costs making up 70 percent of the school’s budget. ($8.75 million of that, according to the 2015-16 budget, accounted for benef its spending.)

This resembles a move at Corning Community College last year in which the college, facing a drop in revenue-driving enrollment numbers, eliminated 21 positions and added five new ones in an effort to reorganize following a period of economic downturn. In 2011 Cayuga Community College, facing a similar shortfall, went the route of increasing student tuition costs by $260, as well as requesting a 2 percent increase in funding from Cayuga County, in an effort to avoid layoffs. However, by 2013, several rounds of layoffs were announced in order to bring the budget to balance, even despite improving enrollment.

In last year’s budget projections, $21 million of the school’s revenues were tied to tuition while $19.8 million came from government funding. $750,000 came from other sources of revenue. However, this year carried with it a $140 increase in tuition (the smallest percentage increase in a decade) and a six percent overall increase in spending. All of this comes paired with a seven percent increase in rev-

IC Names Its Ninth President

thaca College announced last Wednesday that it has selected a new president, former Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer at Rutgers University-Newark Shirley Collado.

Collado will take over the job in July, succeeding current school president Tom Rochon who will retire at that time. She will become the ninth president of IC, and second female president. Rochon announced his retirement in January 2016.

Collado has worked extensively in higher education, teaching at Georgetown University, New York University and George Mason University among others. She is the child of Dominican immigrants, and is the first person in her family

Official SEIU bylaws state that in order to legally strike, a super majority is indeed needed, but only of those who choose to vote, not the entire organization. The official language of Article 10.2 states a strike cannot be conducted unless the effected membership votes in favor of such action at a meeting called for that purpose. Such a vote will be conducted by secret ballot and a two-thirds majority of those voting shall be required in order to approve a strike.

So with that language in mind, the contingent faculty would have free reign for a strike, as they easily surpassed a super majority – 88 percent – of those who voted. Technical rules aside, Lichtmann’s con-

She received her undergraduate degree in Human and Organizational Development from Vanderbilt University in 1994, followed by a Master’s and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Duke.

She said this is a crucial time for higher education, and that places like Ithaca have a chance to play an important role in the future outlook of academia.

“As higher ed, and our nation, face a sea change of complicated challenges, it’s dynamic undergraduate colleges like Ithaca College that have, in my opinion, tremendous opportunity to push discourse across difference that’s rooted in humanity, cerns about transparency still carry some weight. If the contingent faculty received overwhelming support among those who voted, as their press release said, why hide the raw voting totals unless they presented a less than enthusiastic portrait of the cause?

W hi le t he skepticism is understandable at face value, the reason may be more strategic than deceptive. Two sources from the faculty unionization effort said independently that they are withholding the numbers to keep the school’s replacement efforts at bay.

Throughout the latter stages of the negotiations, the threat of a strike looming ever larger, the school’s tone has begun to shift towards ensuring students that regardless of the outcome of the negotiations, classes would

Collado enters at a difficult time for IC. She will replace Rochon, who announced his retirement under duress, amid a furor over racial tension that had enveloped the campus during the fall and winter a year ago. A faculty strike may also be looming, as negotiations continue between the contingent faculty representation and Ithaca College’s administration. During a short question and answer period, Collado declined to comment on the ongoing negotiations between the school and the contingent faculty, but provided this opinion on faculty unionization in general.

“I think that unionization and what’s happening around faculty engagement whether it’s part time faculty or other sectors of the academy are important conversations that are happening nationally. It’s my hope, and I’m very hopeful and faithful about this, that there will be a positive and healthy and inclusive resolution to the current negotiations that are happening at Ithaca right now.”

Collado also said while she does want to have a “100 Days Plan”, most of it will be based around learning the area and the community, and attempting to find feedback about the important issues on campus.

“I do not have a distinct plan or initiatives that I want to tackle right away, but there are certainly areas of great interest

to me.”

Collado’s introductory comments mainly focused on her path to that point, particularly about how her career had been shaped by her working-class upbringing. She said she basically raised her little brothers, as both her parents were working long hours with meager incomes. She was part of a pilot program through the Posse Foundation that allowed her to afford Vanderbilt University, and spoke about how important that scholarship, and the support system that came with it, was to her formatively.

“Every single person in this room benefits from a cohort, a mentor, and somebody seeing something in them that you can’t see in yourself just yet,” she said. “It’s how I’m standing here before you today.”

Collado further spoke about the values she wants to bring to IC, and how she views her leadership fitting into the campus community. She said she will strive for authenticity and took time to specifically highlight an emphasis on shared governance, and how she feels it is a school administration’s duty to stay mindful of the students first as decisions are made.

“Put your seatbelt on, I’m a high-energy person,” Collado said. “We will be busy, this will not be a static opportunity with me. But all of my vision, all of the work that I’ve led has been because of collaboration, and because of a willingness for people to be part of the work.”

In a posting on Intercom, the campus communications system, responding to the contingent vote last week, the school stated the following: In the event a strike occurs, the college will remain open and will be as flexible as possible to help faculty and students navigate the logistics of the strike while fulfilling our educational requirements and delivering the educational experience our students expect.

It would appear this is the language that has unnerved the faculty union organizers, interpreting it to mean that an effort would quickly begin to replace those who participate in a strike. Whether these replacements would be temporary or permanent is unknown, but the apprehension can be appreci-

ated. In order to avoid giving the school any type of rubric to prepare replacements, the union organizers don’t want to show their hand in the form of raw voting numbers. It’s a form of opacity, certainly, but whether you think the union’s opacity is justified or paranoid is fairly subjective.

For their part, the school’s official public stance has stuck to resolving the situation and keeping everybody in the classroom, contingent faculty and students. A press release from the school said that negotiations ended Friday with a 14.3 percent pay increase proposal over four years from the school, countered by a 43-50 percent increase over five years from the faculty representatives.

t isn’t that Ellen Grady and other Ithaca Catholic Worker activists didn’t need good rest at home, with a big benefit concert by Karan Casey in March to plan.

Nevertheless, six of them camped out on the office floor of Ithaca’s member of Congress, Tom Reed, in midFebruary while requesting a meeting with him to discuss his support for Donald Trump, and Ithaca’s lack of it.

Ithaca is overwhelmingly Democratic, but has been gerrymandered

by Republican legislators into Reed’s right-leaning, rural district to wipe out its political influence. Representative Reed had not been in Ithaca in months.

The Ithaca Catholic Workers decided that this extreme situation of nonrepresentation called for an extreme response, and planned an occupation of the Ithaca office, devoid of its representative, until such time as he appeared. They went to Reed’s office on Tuesday, February 14.

“We started discussing a sit-in a few weeks before,” Ellen Grady said.

“We chose Valentine’s Day, a day we celebrate love, to protest policies of Donald Trump’s that Reed totally supports, and have nothing to do with love, that are based on fear and hate.”

The group went to the office, on E. State St., and met a staffer there Tuesday. They asked for a conversation with their member of Congress. They

were told that would be impossible.

They said they would stay until it was possible. Stay, as in not leave.

The staffer said okay. He remained through the day, and left that night.

The citizens stayed.

It was the same on Wednesday, day and night, and the same on Thursday, till 10:30 p.m., when Reed unexpectedly phoned, and soon arrived.

Apparently, by then, he was convinced that the group meant what they said, that they would not leave until he showed up at his office.

They met for about ninety minutes.

The group spoke of their support for the Affordable Care Act, immigrant rights, and non-military approaches to political problems. It was pointed, though cordial. It ended with a circle of prayer, a Catholic Worker tradition.

“Reed is also Catholic,” Grady said, “and we wanted to share some of that perspective.” Reed joined hands with the group. They prayed and everyone left.

Now the group turns its time and attention to a joyful event, a concert fundraiser, although this too is a serious matter. Members of the group are about to stand trial for protests against drone warfare at Hancock Field in Syracuse, a major center for its conduct.

Defense for dissent against war is expensive.

“There are trial expenses, and a lot of outreach to do,” Grady says. “At the moment we have no money at all.”

Some money is important to the group, but so are the community and the artistry of the concert event. Irish singer Karan Casey has performed about a half-dozen of these shows for the group over fifteen years or so. Ellen and Karan first met when Karan was singing with the world-renowned Irish group, Solas, and came to Ithaca.

Ellen said, “They did a lot of songs about immigration, which is a major theme in Irish music and history, and found out about the work we were doing around immigration issues, and Karan said they would do a benefit for us if we wanted. Of course we said yes.”

Karan has since gone on to a solo career. Whenever she tours the U.S., she tries to come to Ithaca for a benefit show. Her tour this year includes a show at Carnegie Hall on Friday, March 3. On Saturday, March 11, she will be here, at Statler Hall.

Karan wrote in an email, “As an Irish woman, I think of past generations who fled famine and war for America. There are too many similarities today not to speak up.

think that any improvements Maguire would make to that giant surface parking lot – an eatery, a brewery, a giant waterslide – would do anything to increase the attractiveness of that site beyond the intent it was built to serve: as a lot meant to sell cars.

Now, common sense here clearly works against the viability of the dealership’s proposal. And an inferred understanding of the city’s comprehensive plan – and its vision for the waterfront – totally works against the idea of a car dealership.

To the city, we say that’s too bad.

Maguire purchased their otherwise unusable property for its fair market value, a property which was zoned for industria l use and had been vacant for years. They’ve been paying taxes on it, and are offering to create something on that property that will go to pay even more. (More than $150,000 worth, according to estimates by Tompkins County Area Development.) And, in their planning process, the dealership’s design team has bent over backwards – almost to the point of ridiculousness – in catering their proposal to fit the vague requirements of the comprehensive plan. The plan will preserve existing viewsheds and provide easier access

the anti-colonial songs, the love songs, and talking up a storm. We need to get out there and make the world a better place. Tap into that time-honored Irish tradition of singing out against oppression. Sing out!”

At the start of the Iraq invasion, Karan did a benefit at the State Theater, and Maurice Hinchey, Ithaca’s member of Congress at the time (pregerrymandering), spoke from stage of his opposition to the war, which he voiced almost alone in Congress.

New York ’s senators , Cha rles Schumer and Hillary Clinton, presumably liberal Democrats, voted for the war.

Hinchey stood alone, but in Ithaca, at the State Theater, he got a standing ovation.

The Ithaca Catholic Workers are to be commended for bringing that Congressman to the stage, our current one simply to his office, and Karan Casey, once again, to town for a night of music and speaking and singing out.

“It’s the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day,” Ellen Grady notes, a time when everyone can celebrate Irishness, which means immigration, and creative addition to American life.

It is mixed-use, assuming the affordable housing component of their rather strange proposal comes through. The only area of the planned characteristics for the waterfront the site doesn’t comply with is minimizing parking but, so far from the urban core and situated next to a rather busy highway, it’s not necesarily accessible, probably as much so as Stewart Park or the Farmer’s Market. By any measure, this is as reasonable a proposal as you can get.

Maguire, despite not being best for the waterfront, is doing exactly what it’s supposed to be doing. And changing the rules on a private property owner midway through the game simply because you don’t like their proposal sets a dangerous precedent.

This city has had a long history of dreaming big for the waterfront and not having much come out of it. A proposal for a large complex on the Johnson Boat Yard site in 2012 was suggested and failed. An ambitious concept for Inlet Island has been downsized. The soils around the lake simply don’t have the strength to support these big dreams.

We can envision whatever we want for the Carpenter Business Park. But realistically, Maguire has been the only group to step up with anything resembling a solution. We suggest the city take what it can while it’s ahead.

The World Doesn’t Revolve Around Ithaca

I

t must be terribly frustrating for Ithaca liberals to realize that Ithaca is not the center of the political universe, the center of the 23rd Congressional District, or even fully representative of Tompkins County (the outlying towns are nowhere near as liberal). Tom Reed represents 11 counties and Ithaca is just a minor part of that vast area and he is in tune with a majority of his constituents and some Republicans even wish his voting record was more Republican than it has been. Reed has not ignored Ithaca, though it might be better if he located his local office and his town hall in some other part of the County, say in Groton or Lansing where his support is more solid. Since Ithaca is so out of touch with the vast majority of his district, it is surprising that he gives it any attention at all since he garners few votes here. An interesting parallel is Assemblywoman Lifton (D) who is rarely seen in, and has no office in, Cortland. No one here seems to complain about that. Contrary to the local political ethos, Ithaca has no right to dominate or control an 11 county congressional district, it is not the “seat from Ithaca” that is represented.

Tom Reed U.S. Congress Congressman Reed was a regular on the media circuit last week, making appearances on MSNBC, Fox News and Fox Business usually relating to his highly-contested town hall series on February 18th. “What I gain is hopefully credibility. I also gain insight when we cut through the rhetoric,” Reed told Fox’s Neil Cavuto. The congressman also appeared at a protest outside his Corning office where he engaged in discussion with several of the demonstrators. Reed’s office has yet to announce any future town hall events, but the congressman has been consistent in reassuring that he will be making more stops across the 23rd district including Tompkins County.

Reed voyages south again to Capitol Hill this week, where the house considers several pieces of legislation including the SCRUB Act which seeks to fund a bipartisan congressional commission to slash, or scrub, legislation the group deems “unnecessary and burdensome.”

In a media call with reporters on Monday, Reed spent a fair amount of time discussing the logistics of repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act, where he acknowledged he wasn’t in support of “ripping the rug out from under people,” but that the plan needed replacement. ive in Ithaca long enough, and you’ll have heard the name Jason Fane.

Ever since he bought his first property in the city in the early ‘70s, the hearsay around Ithaca’s largest landlord has grown into its own mythology.

If you believed what was written about him in the Cornell Daily Sun in his early days, you’d know Fane as something of a demonic slumlord on the hills, a man whose housing conditions were so deplorable they prompted protests on East Hill demanding better housing conditions. In Providence, Rhode Island, where he’s working on the approval of a 55-story-building – the city’s tallest – which rivals have been quoted as describing as “the Towers of Evil,” a three-tower complex fit for the Dubai’s skyline which, fittingly, would dwarf the tallest building in the state, known as the Superman Building.

Fitting the Bond villain mythos even further, the man has fought Goldfinger-esque legal battles over $850,000 in gold and silver bullion, telling Investor News in 2011; “these bars are mine.”

Yet, despite his fame, his money and real estate holdings in Toronto and New York City, the man is something of a phantom about town. Ask anyone with anything to say if they’ve met Fane, if they can describe his face, and you’ll find the number who can is few and far in between. Most know him only by his calling card – the black and neon signs which have adorned his buildings for four decades – emblazoned with his company’s logo and that phone number which has been one of the few constants in a town that has seen many changes in his time.

But, there are the stories.

Commercial renters have alleged his leases are unfair, if not “horrible,” as a 2014 Daily Sun article so claimed. There are the empty storefronts – no more common than any other landlord’s – needing to be filled, each sticking out only more prominently with those dayglo-colored signs. There’s that protest from the early days, the “strike” of ‘74, where more than 30 Cornell students withheld rent payments until their demands were met.

Since, any mention of the name “Jason Fane” has been correlated with that of a bad deal: “No one should rent from Ithaca Renting,” one Cornell student commented on that 2014 article. Yet those who actually know him are somewhat puzzled by this attitude.

to her while she was a business advisor in Corning in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

For decades coming into the job, the storyline had always been one of a manufactured animosity between the city and one of its largest private taxpayers. Fane, in 2016, accounted for close to $2.7 million in county, city and school taxes across his 26 properties, not a small amount by any measure.

As such, DeSarno knew she needed to have a rapport with him, to be able to call him up at any time as more of a medium between him and what, for sometime, had been this oppressive, civic entity. Fane, before that time, had never had an invitation to City Hall, he told her, and had before then had maintained very little contact with those in the offices at 108 E. Green St. “I’m not somebody that wears a face. I wear makeup, but I don’t wear a face,” DeSarno said. “I don’t know how to operate that way: what you see is what you get…

I didn’t know if I was getting the straight translation from people. I felt like I really needed to chat with him myself.”

Today, after a dozen years, the myth seems to have slipped away.

“I never in a million years thought I would say this when I came here,” DeSarno said on a recent Thursday afternoon, “but Ithaca is actually lucky to have him.”

Who Is Jason Fane?

Few people in Ithaca know Fane better than his longtime architect, Jagat Sharma.

Someone who could be considered the architect of modern Collegetown, Sharma, who came to Ithaca in 1970 to pursue a master’s degree, decided to delve into private practice a decade later. Fane was one of his first clients.

In town for a while at that point, Sharma said he had never met Fane: when he first answered that newspaper ad, he just knew he was a landlord with a few old wood frame houses on the hills and a bad reputation. Doing his due diligence, he called a couple people to find out what he was like. It was Gus Lambrou, an established landowner in the city, who sold him, telling Sharma Fane was a very astute businessman: very sharp,but also a man who was good on his word, the type to never break a contract.

But, Fane had a reputation, someone whose houses had been cited for illegal apartments and had even been targeted by the building department for unsafe conditions.

But today, Sharma says that reputation was unearned.

“When I saw the ad, all I heard was ‘oh, he’s a slum landlord, he owns this and that and doesn’t do anything… all landlords were like that at that time,” Sharma said.

could begin as late as 5 p.m.

Tr y i n g t o reach him, oftentimes emails or phone calls won’t be answered until the early afternoon. In researching this story, with no business to be made, correspondence would often come between the hours of 1 and 3 in the morning, often offering a meeting date on as little as a day’s notice.

But Fane is a busy man, making trips to all three cities where he owns property within the space of a week, making laps from his luxurious apartment with the museumquality furnishings in Ithaca to his Fifth Avenue residence in New York City.

A Grand Vision For Ithaca

Above downtown in his offices in Cityview Apartments, the pride of the Fane Organization, what he refers to still as a “small real estate business,” is painted all over the walls.

In his conference room, portraits of his properties, painted by artist Bill Deats, line the walls, waiting to be given away to their next owners. Front and center is a framed copy of a front page story in the Providence Journal, showing his dream for a structure to define the skyline of Rhode Island’s capital forever.

“We’ve changed the mental culture and self image of Providence with this building,” Fane said. “People didn’t see themselves, in Providence, of having that kind of building, even though they could afford it.

The image wasn’t there, just as in Ithaca; it’s not their image. But as a result of my presenting it, they’ve come to like it.”

first big building: Collegetown Court.

From there, they rode the first real boom days of Ithaca, ending a nearly 60-year drought of new construction on East Hill by building Collegetown Center and Collegetown Plaza as well as, in the city, buying and renovating the Colonial Building, the Cigar Factory and the Cityview Apartments, where Fane currently has his offices. It was all about consolidating his portfolio, expanding where he knew others would do the same: Fane was simply quicker to the draw than anyone else.

“I bought top locations and had confidence in Collegetown and the area near the Commons when others were negative,” Fane wrote to The Times on his approach to business. “When Ithaca was hostile to development, I built elsewhere and when Ithaca wanted development, I built on sites I had acquired earlier. Mayor Svante Myrick has been about the best mayor on these issues and Ithaca is enjoying more modern buildings, higher tax revenues and greater employment as a result.”

Early on, simply going where he was allowed to go – upward – was enough to raise eyebrows.

“I asked him, ‘what are you doing?’”

Sharma said. “‘Everyone says you are crazy.’

And he says to me, ‘Jagat, a building comes on the market once every thirty years. And if you don’t grab it right away, somebody else will get it and keep it for thirty years.’

He just put them all together.”

It was during that time where, working with Fane most days of the week, Sharma got a sense of what it was like to work alongside him, discovering a man of endless energy and ent husia sm, a lways looking for more, a lways looking for better. Though his architect often acted as a check to some of his grander ambiGreen St tions, he’d look ove r S h a r m a’s floorplans, pointi n g out t he b e s t and the worst, always finding extra bedrooms where they may otherwise not be found.

“He bought them as they were, he wanted to fix them. But as soon as he bought them, it was his name that was attached to them.”

But Fane’s real estate empire, which now spans between here, Toronto and New York City, began rooted in humble beginnings in the late ‘60s. As a graduate student at Harvard but with Ithaca connections, Fane leased – and bought – an old house on the hill with no down payment, the way many properties were acquired in those days. He eventually bought the house next door, and then the one next to that and before long, Fane realized he was in the real estate business.

Many of the houses he bought in those days were baggage free, usually on their third or fourth mortgage and unloaded because the owner didn’t want it or had tired of dealing with it. Many of the properties, he said, were approaching 100 years old and very behind on maintenance. He didn’t have a lot of money, but because of the ease of entry into the market he bought as much as he could for what he could get for no down payment.

From there, it was just about staying on top of the payments.

“Basically,” Fane said in an interview, “anybody who was willing to do the work could get into the business.”

In ‘81, Sharma began his career focusing, primarily, on residential improvements to those wood frame houses, Fane’s empire having grown large enough by way of a purchasing boom in 1973 to the point of profitability. By 1985, Fane and Sharma were constructing their

the former home of the Green Café, at 330 College Ave. It was at this site, several years ago, where Fane pitched a building that may otherwise be unthinkable to anyone in the tiny city of Ithaca: on a corner lot zoned for six stories, Fane proposed a structure of 11 stories, a spectacular proposal which renowned development blogger Brian Crandall wrote in 2014; “This will not happen. What Jason Fane was thinking in proposing a 12-story building for the Green Cafe site has everything to do with seeing what he can get away with. The calculating businessman as always, shocking the board and meeting attendees with a massive proposal…my only guess is that he is willing to negotiate down.”

But Fane is a dreamer, and he has always had big plans for Ithaca. Ask him today, and he’s just as serious about the proposal as he was when he brought it forward: it’s similar to what he’s attempted to do in Providence, to introduce a city to a self-identity it has yet to discover itself.

“That site is iconic, it needs an iconic building,” Fane told Sharma, the architect behind the proposal. “That’s the only big building I want to do in Collegetown.”

As the person who probably has the most to do with the state of Collegetown today, Fane might be the only one to do something of the sort. In a 1976 issue of Cornell alumni magazine, well before Collegetown became a canyon of retail and residential space, there was Fane with the vision; outlining a corridor like that of metropolitan Toronto, a commercial and artistic center

where you could “hear it all happening,” coming about in what even then was considered a time of transition in the neighborhood. What it became, as one Cornellian described it in another issue of the magazine two decades later, was “Ithaca’s third gorge,” a neighborhood almost defined by those who had latched onto the building environment spurred by rezoning. Fane, as its wealthiest backer, simply became the face of it all, something of a scapegoat for the unseemly impacts of progress.

It may have been his buildings which served as the trigger. There was Collegetown Court, a landmark in that it was

the first elevator-serviced building in the neighborhood when it was built in the early-80s. Then you had Collegetown Plaza and, probably most iconic of his big three, Collegetown Center, an angular structure of golden limestone and red granite where even the laundry room had a view. “No expense was spared,” a local writer and Cornell lecturer, C.A. Carlson, wrote in the 1997 alumni magazine article.

Fane, who grew up blocks away from what used to be Ebbetts Field in Brooklyn, spares no emotion in his affinity for larger cities. The process for approval is less political, he says, more cut and dry than

the seemingly arbitrary policies thrown around City Hall which developers have to grapple with. He said he loves New York City – where he branched out after watching the Woody Allen film “Manhattan,” he says – and Toronto, an emerging market he entered into in 1971. But he owes a lot to Ithaca, a place where he built a business and where now, he is more or less established in: for better or worse. He has dreams for the city, plenty of ideas, and with the policies of Mayor Myrick now encouraging of his brand of development, he is ready to begin building again. But his ambitions, DeSarno says, may be too grand for a city’s identity;

at least for today.

“We are who we are, and he’s not going to change Ithaca overnight,” DeSarno said.

“He’d like to go taller than our zoning allows, yeah, and he likes working with big cities because he can go tall and expensive.

We’ve told him who we are: ‘we’re Ithaca, we’re 30,000 people, we’re not Toronto, we’re not Manhattan, you can’t put us in the same category.”

There may be hints to his thinking in the opening scene of that Woody Allen film, a montage of city life set to the airiness of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. You see a city defined by millions of lives weaving through a canyon of buildings at a scale beyond the comprehension of man; structures that dwarf the lives passing beneath them.

“He romanticized the city all out of proportion,” the narrator says, one of several takes on the protagonist’s view of the city in which he lived and worked. In his vision, Fane seems to see Ithaca a similar way, at times in contempt of the difficulty in doing business here but at the same time, still willing to put his money into it.

“We all want to be liked,” DeSarno said.

“Some of us more than others. Some would even take steps to get there. But when you’ve got a business with a lot of money involved, and you’re paying more taxes than even Cornell… you’re doing something. He’s not an absentee landlord, he’s here most weeks.

He goes from New York City, to here, to Toronto, every week. It’s not like some of the people I deal with.”

But maybe, New York City is the spirit that drives him. As the narration to start that Woody Allen classic goes: “New York is his town. And it always would be.”

trekked down the stairs leading to the dark basement of Rice Hall, unlocked a door, and chuckled at the chaos of the jam packed storage room where dozens of computers sit in wait.

When the club members are ready to work on them, they take the computers up to a much more organized third floor office, where they wipe the machines’ memories and make sure the proper programs are installed. The computers are marked as ready to go, and when a shipment needs to go out the club will hold a packing party.

The computers can often be used until they are up to a decade old, Heiman said.

Often problems with aging computers are due to corrosion, and sometimes all that has to be done to correct the issue is to remove the affected part and put it back in, which scrapes off the buildup.

The shipping is the hard part because the logistics are tricky; trustworthy, knowledgeable volunteers on the ground at the destination are crucial. The Computer Club has expended a lot of time and effort building a network of such people in Africa.

Sometimes the donation of computers can lead to unexpected positive developments. For example, a community center in Nigeria received a well because volunteers realized how crucial it was to the center’s success.

In 2011, on offshoot of the Computer Club broke off into the separate but overlapping Zambia Community Education Initiative, a student organization that was founded to build a high school in Chisekesi, Zambia, in partnership with the Chisekesi community. Many volunteers are members of both groups.

The objective of ZCEI is to put in place modern secondary schools in Zambia that will support rural communities and connect them to individuals concerned with education, health, social and economic development.

The group just received 501c nonprofit status in 2014; ZCEI raised $4,000 during its first year as a nonprofit, $8,000 the year after that, and almost $40,000 last year.

Last semester, students organized a raffle that netted $3,500 for the cause.

Last summer, five ZCEI members were able to travel to Zambia to help build a school. The group sends laptops to Zambian schools rather than desktops because the communities they serve are not on an electrical grid. Computers are crucial to the students, who are required to take online tests before they are allowed to move from the lower grades to secondary school, but according to ZCEI members they have to charge them using either portable solar chargers or chargers fashioned from car batteries.

Of course, none of this matters if there aren’t enough schools to house the machines, nearby wells for drinking water

and adequate housing for teachers who live miles away in the sprawling farming communities. “All the government will do is employ the teachers,” Heiman said, “and there’s no guarantee that they will stick around.”

To address that issue, ZCEI has paid to make 50,000 concrete blocks, and the first building to be funded by the group is currently being built.

ZCEI is also reaching out beyond the Cornell Campus, seeking volunteers from local communities; recently members joined up with the Trumansburg School District, and now the school is a “sister school” to a primary school in Chisekesi, one of the Zambian communities most in need.

“It is severely lacking in about everything,” said Julia Leonard, chief financial officer of ZCEI. She travelled to Zambia for the first time recently along with several other ZCEI members. “It was depressing and inspiring at the same time,” she said.

“They have nothing, but the kids show up.”

“Many of the teachers as well — they’ve walked there, and they’re still enthusiastic about learning,” Leonard added. “There was one that had been working at a primary school that had no teacher housing, and it was 15 kilometers to walk each way just to work at the school.”

In addition to donating computers and building schools, ZCEI also purchases text books and sports equipment for the students.

“Engagement efforts are a big part of

it,” said Alexis Boyce, Zambia Initiative member. “We’ve been working in partnership with [the locals] so that they have stakeholder status.”

“The community has really stepped up to help with the work,” agreed Leonard. “It’s not that we’re having to dig out trenches for the foundation and walls by ourselves because the community members are volunteering their time and helping with the manual labor involved while we were there.” Those who had experience in construction oversaw the finer points of the build while the less skilled workers filled in the walls.

“It was great to see whatever skill set they had, it was utilized and went a long way,” said Leonard.

The Trumansburg group helped organize a day when Barnes & Noble will donate 10 percent of the proceeds from it’s Ithaca store to the cause. The event is to take place on March 18, in honor of World Water Day. Trumansburg Schools are also hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser May 11 at 6 p.m. with all the proceeds going to the Zambia efforts.

For now the group will continue its efforts to reach out to the local community and raise awareness for their cause. “100 schools is a drop in the bucket when there are thousands in need, but they are so enthusiastic and appreciative,” said Leonard. “Every drop matters.”

ould eating a plant-based diet be the key to lower blood pressure, lower weight and a longer life?

It couldn’t hurt, local experts say.

That was the prescription handed down at a recent lecture at Island Health And Fitness Club by Dr. Donna Sandidge, the Medical Director for the Cayuga Center for Healthy Living, and Natalie Pape, a registered dietician at the center. The topic, following a plant-based diet to better health, discussed not only the science behind the benefits of weaning off of a standard American diet, but the feasibility of it as well, slowly working toward a vegan diet or, at the least, one de-emphasizing consumption of meat and dairy products.

The main benefit, said Sandidge, was simply stated: a plant-based diet can help you live longer and in better health.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the leading cause of death in the United States is still heart disease and cancer, of which colon cancer, which accounts for close to 50,000 deaths per year, pancreatic, prostate and breast cancer are all partly related to diet and/or obesity. Risk factors related to heart disease and some cancers can be addressed with a whole food, plant-based diet.

This knowledge could have a big impact.

betics over 65 years of age die from heart disease. Among those with Type 2 Diabetes, where obesity is a contributing factor, risk of death could be lowered 50-75 percent if they switched to a plant-based diet.

In regard to heart disease, the famed cardiologist and vegan Kim A. Williams said in a 2014 article in The New York Times that a vegan diet can not only lower bad cholesterol — the type that causes heart disease — but it also avoids the type of foods that can be considered the culprit for other unsavory conditions.

“I recom mend a pla nt-based d iet because I know it’s going to lower their blood pressure, improve their insulin sensitivity and decrease their cholesterol,” Williams told The New York Times. “And so I recommend it in all those conditions.

Some patients are able to do it and some are not.”

Coronary artery disease develops when low-density lipoproteins, or LDL — often referred to as “bad cholesterol” — build up in the wall of the artery causing a narrowing or “plaque” that can block blood flow to the heart muscle. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot develops over one of these plaques. The dietary connection

comes from the consumption of saturated fats, which is correlated directly with an increase in LDL cholesterol and risk for cardiovascular disease. A plant-based diet is naturally low in saturated fat, which is found primarily in meat, poultry and dairy.

According to a 1990 study by Dr. Dean Ornish (who has famously served as medical consultant to the Clintons since 1993) published by the prestigious medical journal Lancet, consumption of a plant-based diet as part of an overall lifestyle improvement approach was actually shown to reduce these risk factors tangibly greater than traditional medical methods. According to the study, patients with known coronary artery disease eating low-fat, plant-based diets who limited vices like smoking, took stress management courses and participated in moderate exercise had a nearly 3 percent improvement in narrowing present in their coronary arteries after five years. This improvement was in comparison to a control group following usual treatment, which saw a decline of narrowing by 11.77 percent over the same time.

But the evidence didn’t stop there. In another example, Sandidge cited something called the Adventist Health Studies, which examined the lifestyle, diet, disease and mortality of Seventh Day Adventists over time. In the study, conducted over the course of several decades in California, the researchers examined the church’s population versus a matched control group of non-Adventists and found that, because of a plant-based, meatless diet, the group lived 10 years longer on average with a significantly lower risk of colon cancer than the rest of California. Specifically, death

rates from all cancers were 40 percent lower for Adventist men and 24 percent lower for Adventist women, among other ailments including colorectal cancer, coronary heart disease and breast cancer. In other Adventist studies, those following a plant-based, meatless diet had much lower rates of diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

The primary difference between the two

groups? Their diets.

Going Vegan

Where Sandidge covered the science of a plant-based diet, Pape – herself a vegan for several years – discussed the logistics of actually making the jump to a diet light on meats, dairy and processed sugars and fats, if they are consumed at all.

While the diet she suggested was technically a vegan diet, she said she didn’t want

people to get caught up in the “V” word: Pape told the audience to “eat the rainbow,” and eat a diet that could be delicious and filled with a number of naturally sweet and savory foods that are not only effective for fighting disease but improving one’s likelihood to be — and stay — healthy.

thousands of naturally occurring chemicals in plants that can interact with your body chemistry in positive ways. She also talked about a concept called “nutrient density” versus “calorie density,” where lower-calorie foods can be consumed in greater quantities than a similar caloric amount of something like oils, cheese or meat. Foods that contain 300 calories per

pound or less, theoretically, could be eaten freely without guilt or worry of weight loss while a pound of food totaling more than 800 calories should be consumed with portions controlled.

So how do you adapt to something like this? Pape had a four-part series of steps to makeover your recipes, substituting the meat in a meat sauce for beans or tofu instead of eggs. You could replace your soups with vegetable stocks and broths, skip the cheese on sandwiches and pizza and swap to almond or (this writer’s preference) cashew milk. It’s also an easy fix to reduce your use of salts or oils, letting vinegar, lemon juice, or herbs and spices to boost the flavor. And for those worried about losing protein in their diet from lack of meat, never fear, Pape said: in fact, legumes like beans have a) more protein per calorie than meat and b) the average American already consumes, on average, twice as much protein as they actually need. You could either go “cold Tofurkey,” she said, or to implement small changes in your meals or diet each week until, af ter a month, you’ve grown accustomed to eating a mostly plant-based diet. It takes three weeks to make or break a habit, she said, and this was a way to make that happen most feasibly.

There are even websites out there to help kick start your new vegan lifestyle.

“Your options are truly endless,” Pape said. “This is a diet of variety and plenty, not one of deprivation As long as you follow the rules, there are so many delicious options you can try.”

To close, she emphasized this doesn’t have to be an all or nothing approach: you could always just try to eat more plants.

ast weekend saw two Ithaca College teams position themselves for more post-season success, as the women’s basketball team won a hard-fought contest against Stevens in the Empire 8 title game and the wrestlers (ranked #4) saw three athletes win titles at the Division III Northeast Regionals and will send at least six grapplers to the NCAA’s. Six are assured a spot, while two are currently alternates.

Head coach Marty Nichols said Torbio’s win was an exciting one. “Carlos got put on his back early, and at one point he was

down 6-0,” Nichols said. “He fought back to put the match into overtime and he won it 10-8. I was very happy for him, as this was his last shot to win Regionals.”

I asked Nichols if his guys are healthy going into the NCAA’s, and he said “A few guys were pretty beat up 2 weeks ago, and some were sick, but we qua lif ied si x guys for the tournament and they’re all pretty healthy. It’s my job to make sure they stay happy and healthy and ready to go.”

T

his spring, Ty Marshal — director of Homer’s Center For The Arts since August 2015 — wants to reintroduce the fresh church-turned concert hall to the region.

Over the past several years, the center itself has come unto its own as a truly regional destination. It’s a place, which through careful curation of its acts and the reputation-brewing intimacy of its concert hall, has developed a reputation as the “listening room,” of the community: a venue made for audiophiles and lovers of live sound.

They added their first bonafide summer season this year — a departure from their standard winter and spring slate — and wrote in a greater flexibility in their scheduling. Where they once announced the season all at once and waited until the agencies gave the thumbs-up to promote their shows, the venue now seeks to bring in additional acts in between their prescheduled performers. They are also selling tickets as soon as they’re confirmed, even if the announcement comes the week before the show.

This helps build engagement with the venue, Marshal said, encouraging people to constantly check back with the center’s slate of events to see what’s new and what’s being added. Rather than to live and die by the main stage calendar.

“We don’t wait anymore,” Marshal said. “We are a concert venue, and we should act like one

when it comes to our main stage program: our concerts.”

The Center for the Arts is trying to expand the base it engages with. The venue has been looking to widen the genres represented on its schedule (decided in part by its volunteer committee, which helps pick who’s sought out to play) as well as widen the demographic its concerts appeal to, even looking toward bringing in significantly bigger names to raise the profile of the converted church’s 400-seat capacity.

“All of this is kind of culminating into us looking to do this year-round,” said Marshal.

“Previously, we would kind of quiet down in the summer. That’s no longer the case … summer is concert season, after all; it doesn’t make sense to stop doing what we’re most known for during the high season of live music.”

They’ve done this recently, bringing in the likes of Ed Kowalczyk, vocalist for ’90s alternative hitmaker Live, and Dave Matthews Band guitarist Tim Reynolds, each who played solo acoustic sets. Both are somewhat in line with the likes of artists like folk artist Slaid Cleaves, a big draw for the 50-and-up crowd.

But what they’re also trying to attract this season are those who have never been to the center before, building

off of their reach. Their scope has attracted audiences from as far off as — a pushpin map in the reception room will show you — Philadelphia and Ontario. Fifty-four percent of the center’s audiences, Marshal said, come from outside the pocket of Cortland and Tompkins Counties, so an emphasis on the center’s local reach has become a priority point as the center expands.

“We want to get new faces and to widen that age range; we’re booking around that,” Marshal said. “But we want to do that without letting go of our roots, which is grassroots and Americana folk. You’re going to see that in the spring season — we’re kind of going heavier on that this spring — to speak to our core audience, to say we’re the

This slate of performers includes artists such as Melanie Safka — famous for her broad repertoire and soaring vocal performance at Woodstock one night close to 50 years ago — and Cheryl Wheeler, acts meant to reassure core patrons they will “not go forgotten” as the center expands its focus. It’s a womencentric schedule this season, Marshal notes, a thoughtful decision reflecting the state of change in society and artistic expression. But overall, the offerings are diverse, jumping from nights of Celtic rock and blues all the way to grassroots, folk and even opera.

“It’s a wide vision,” Marshal said. “But it seems to be working.”

etflix’s mail service is sluggish these days, but the great thing about having access to their massive library of DVDs is the ability to take a crash course on unfamiliar filmmakers. In advance of Chilean director’s Neruda, opening Friday at Cinemapolis, I ordered up two of Larrain’s other films to get a sense of what he’s about. Larrain is prolific; in addition to Neruda, he made two other films last year: the Jackie O biopic Jackie — out on DVD March 7 — and The Club (more on that later).

My first impression of Larrain is that while he deals with real aspects of Chilean history and culture, he’s not making documentaries. Neruda is a good example.

He takes a more poetic approach, mixing Chilean icons with fictional characters. In broad outline, Neruda is a chase film, but it’s not The Fugitive by any stretch.

Set three years after the end of WWII, Neruda focuses on the political persecution that poet and Communist Senator Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco) suffered after criticizing President Gabriel González Videla’s brutal anti-communist repression in a speech in the National Congress in 1948, and the manhunt for his arrest, led by our figure of fiction, the fascist Chief of Policía de Investigaciones Oscar Peluchonneau (Gael García Bernal). Peluchonneau is given his orders: “Catch him and humiliate him. Then we’ll celebrate.”

Where Neruda is almost a satyr, addicted to his fame and women and food and booze, Peluchonneau, with his natty mustache, sharp fedora and hard-boiled detective narration, has no inner life except for the hunt. Where Neruda feels like a fleshed-out, flawed human being, Peluchonneau is an archetype; he seems to have stepped out of a film-noir classic from the 1940s.

As the pursuit wears on, the hunter becomes less and less effective within the story. At one point, he tracks down Neruda’s wife, who calmly tells him that the entire affair is a fiction written by the titular poet, even her. She calls him a supporting character, to which he replies, “I’m not a supporting character.” Thus the film is just as much about Peluchonneau realizing he is wrong as it is about capturing Neruda. This fictional veneer gives Larrain’s factual film an edge.

I first heard of Larrain back in 2013 when I was interviewing the director Brian Trenchard-Smith. Smith had just seen Larrain’s No, which he described as looking like it was shot with cell phones, but it was actually shot on three-quarter-inch

videotape. No also stars Bernal and Gnecco, and is, again, a fictionalized account of the historical moment of advertising tactics in political campaigns in the 1988 plebiscite, when the Chilean citizenry decided whether or not dictator Augusto Pinochet should stay in power for another eight years.

man who is drafted to work on the No campaign. As soon as he begins working, he is followed and his family is threatened. The video look of No allows Larrain to seamlessly blend Bernal’s story with the ad campaigns and actual news footage from the period. It’s a more gripping nail-biter than the melding of reality and fiction in Neruda, though both films pack a punch.

Finally, I saw The Club, about four priests living in exile in a Chilean coastal village, “disappeared” for crimes like molestation. A new priest arrives, followed by a taunting villager who was one of his victims. The priest shoots himself out of guilt, and when a new spiritual director arrives to question the men and shut down the club, we see what lengths they will go to in order to keep the truth from coming out.

No spoilers, but The Club builds to an act of such savage brutality that it lands like a slap in the face. Like Jordan Peele’s fine Get Out, a horror film with racial satirical overtones, The Club is driven by a finely tuned sense of rage, a scream in the wilderness. •

f you thought you missed the 7th annual Winter Village Music Festival at La Tourelle Resort & Spa here in Ithaca, you haven’t! Over four days — Thursday, March 2nd through Sunday, March 5th — this year’s four concert and multifarious music workshop extravaganza presents an extremely talented assortment of progressive acoustic music: bluegrass, old-time, swing, Celtic and Americana. Featured national touring performers are Jeremy Kittel Trio, The Barefoot Movement and 10-String Symphony. Ithaca Times met with Winter Village Music Festival Founder and Director Rick Manning (RM) to ask a few questions about the festival’s inception: IT: “How did Winter Village Music Festival come about? Is it modeled on other festivals?”

RM: “As a performer I’ve played at indoor bluegrass festivals in Seattle and at Joe Val’s Bluegrass Festival in Framingham (MA) that were held at huge hotels full of musicians. And when I started working on Cayuga Waterfront Trail (CWT), I became involved with tourism and learned about the county’s tourism grants program, and the need to develop winter tourism. This got me thinking about putting together a festival because progressive bluegrass doesn’t come to Ithaca. And working on CWT was how I got to know Scott Wiggins who owns and manages La Tourelle.”

IT: “That brings us to my next question. Why La Tourelle as the host location for Winter Village Music Festival?”

RM: “La Tourelle is comfy, easy. And it’s more comfortable to be in one place with musicians jamming with friends throughout the hotel. It has a great space

that allows for watching concert performers play up-close and there isn’t a bad seat in the room.”

IT: “How would you characterize progressive bluegrass?”

RM: “Progressive bluegrass usually has a really good singer rooted in original songs with great harmonies and great instrumentalists. There have always been arguments among players within the bluegrass family: Is it bluegrass or is it not bluegrass? This is between the traditionalists who play in the original style [Bill Monroe] and those like the Claire Lynch Band—they played our festival in 2011—that writes a lot of their own music with good vocals.”

IT: “Did you start with only bluegrass and then add other styles to the festival program?”

RM: “No. There’s always been a selection of styles, but this year with Jeremy Kittel Trio, we’re offering Celtic because the festival is in March and close to St. Patrick’s Day. And over the years we’ve developed a level of trust [among our attendees] and have proven that people will attend to hear and learn from unknown musicians. ****** Jeremy Kittel, an award-winning fiddler and violinist, is a master in Celtic, classical, jazz and bluegrass. He was a member of Turtle Island Quartet and has worked with Mark O’Connor, Bela Fleck, Chris Thile, among many other illustrious musicians. Jeremy Kittel Trio’s mandolin player, Josh Pinkham, has been cited as “one of the most important young improvisers on the acoustic scene today” by mandolin grandmaster David Grisman and continues to blaze new trails in bluegrass, newgrass, jazz and classical forms. The third member, guitarist Quinn Bachand, plays a range of styles including jazz and bluegrass and is most recognized for his Celtic musicianship with its unique harmonies.

The Barefoot Movement powers a heady blend of Appalachian bluegrass, folk and country blend with tight three-part harmonies that crackle with a contemporary feeling.

“It’s like a one on one experience,” Millman added. “We’re both trained percussionists, and the rhythmic sensibilities we share really helps define our direction. With ‘5 Star Zyn’ you can see us expanding our dimension, but the sound is still based on groove and feeling.”

origin story factors into their continued totality. They first played together in a fit of spontaneity.

“Gabe was playing in another group, practicing in a room up at Ithaca College, and I had to get some chairs from there,” explained piano and keyboardist Aaron Walters. “He was messing around with some beats that I was really digging, and so I ran over to the piano and we went off for like five minutes. It was really something, and we both agreed to do it again.”

Walters and drummer Gabe Millman have progressed tenfold from that fateful moment. From their early acoustic, freejazz inspired compositions to the newer, denser and more angular material, the two musicians have always shared a special language. They offer a sound intensely full for just a duo: weaving and pushing toward a horizon of lush vision.

“I use two keyboards when I play, two midis that I can continually change the sounds with, which makes a huge difference when playing live,” Walters said.

“We’re lucky our sound is so rhythmical.

Sometimes when we’re writing there are long periods of improvisation, and there’s this amazing freedom to do whatever you want.”

rearranging, dancing and waving. Think Bad Plus, MMW, Keith Jarrett, Joey Baron and Triosk. In many ways the band has moved on from that sound, but the intricacies and communication of the old style is still prominent.

“When we play out live we never use any prerecorded stuff, it’s very much in the jazz tradition, and this is really how we approach recordings as well,” Walters said.

“It’s really just the two of us figuring things out. We’re both engineers.”

The two musicians treat Quail Turret as both an outlet and a heavy artistic statement. Both have felt the anxiety and insanity of the current social and political climate, and both admit finding it hard to drown out the noise.

“It’s really just made me want to get away from it and make music,” Walters said. “And I’m blessed to be able to do that.”

“For me, it’s exhausting trying to keep track of everything,” Millman said.

“Between the political landscape, being in grad school working on my thesis and playing in the band — it’s a daily grind.

Quail Turret is a way to get out all the jitters. It’s what I love to do.” •

he dark world rotates on an exceptional axis for Syracuse based death metal stalwarts Ecliptic Vision. The quartet ascends with quick realizations and abundant speed, pulling the nether regions into a unique balance.

Sustaining a rigorous intensity through a myriad of tasteful and arty idioms is the band’s ultimate nature: a practice in extreme musical fluidity.

“With heavy music it’s very easy to hone in on one aspect or niche and repeat that over and over until you suck the life out of it and it no longer draws a listener in,” noted drummer Vincent Lawyer.

“With that said, we’ve always crafted our music as if it were a living, breathing organism. Each song has its own natural evolution or progression. By keeping this idea at the forefront, we create this balance that allows each aspect of the song to be emphasized in its own right while also complimenting the parts that surround it.”

The band’s a unique study in shadowy equilibrium and prolific combination.

Spinning across dimensions strange and complex they assemble an organic nature. Sections coalesce like water and sand. Technical virtuosity floats within and without a deft syntax. There is hardy mechanization throughout, but it’s

ultimately the biotic energy that drives the band towards the infinite. The group’s debut record Dissimilar Dimensions is a monster of force and gravity: an album that both mesmerizes and destroys.

“Our guitarist Ryan [Caughey] was the mastermind behind the concept of the new record,” Lawyer said. “It’s a collection of stories based around the themes of extraterrestrial life, the paranormal, and how that relates back to us as humans. It takes the listener from the internal depths of the mind to the vast perspective of the universe as a whole and our place in it.”

Lawyer said the conjoining of everyone’s unique tastes is what makes the band work.

“Our writing style pulls from several different sources of inspiration, musically and otherwise,” Lawyer explained.

HeadsUp Wild Child on the move

olk, and then indy, and then alternative, and then jazz — or perhaps, it was none of those styles at all.

Wild Child is constantly evolving, drawing on inspiration from classic artists, new bands and messy steps through life. Austin, Texas, singer-songwriters Alexander Beggins and Kelsey Wilson formed Wild Child about seven years ago after they met playing backup for a Danish band. Their lives continued to intertwine, continued to swirl together and continued to breathe into Wild Child.

And when Beggins fell out of a fouryear-long relationship and when Wilson split from her fiancé of five years — both relationships ending less than a week apart from each other — they took to writing new music.

“Kelsey and I consistently go through — strangely go through — the same thing at the same time,” Beggins said. “Writing is kind of therapy in a way;

The band’s latest album, Fools, sounds “bigger,” said Beggins. Compared to its first album Pillow Talk, Fools is more full-bodied with instrumentation that complements the vocals with a precise balance. Fools relies less on the acoustic, almost-folk sound Pillow Talk has. Wild Child has blossomed from collaboration, with Fools’ first track written not just by Beggins and Wilson but by the entire band — a first for Wild Child.

Begggins and Wilson guide the music as they share secrets in their songs. Each track speaks with a level of trust, ripping out pages from a diary and animating them through song. Wild Child translates this intimacy into their live shows. Each performance reverberates off of the audience, as they become part of the stories being told.

Each audience is different, and each show is different. Beggins said he can look back on every concert and pick out something different from his memories.

No shows are the same, and no crowd shares the same experiences as the last.

“We’ve found in our shows people want to let it out as well,” Beggins said.

And the collaborative experiences aren’t stopping: the band just finished writing a fourth album. Wild Child is working with artists such as Dr. Dog and Chris Walla, developing and refining the band’s sound. Wild Child keeps its style open-ended leaves room for fresh, polished work.

What remains constant, however, is the honesty in each song’s composition.

While some are written with a sense of meticulousness, others write themselves

of seventeen pieces, “The Riddle of Eyes”. The end of the scroll links back to the beginning, and the high level of detail and density of symbols encourage the audience to revisit it for multiple viewings over time.
