ompk ins Cortland Community College is preparing to hire its new president. the final three candidates met with community members throughout Tompkins and Cortland Counties last week.

Orinthia Montague

Montague is current ly the vice president of student affairs and Orinthia chief diversity Montague officer at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, MN, the largest community college within the Minnesota State system.

The college serves approximately 14,000 credit and non-credit students annually.

Montague cites a three percent increase in enrollment since assuming responsibility for enrollment management in 2014 as one of her biggest accomplishments.

When asked about the financial struggles TC3 has encountered in recent years, Montague said that she would reevaluate enrollment strategies, “looking at what we’ve done over the years to say, ‘is there an opportunity to do things differently?’”

“Maybe that’s utilizing web presence a bit more in terms of having more access to people,” she suggested. “Or looking at where we recruit and how we’re supporting students.”

She said she would also look internally at retention strategies, reasoning that it is more effective to keep a student than to recruit new ones only to have them leave.

Mental Health Gets Needed Boost

A

small crowd gathered at the Tompkins County Mental Health Department on East Green Street to celebrate the transformation of the building’s front lobby.

Where there was once only a confusing, unwelcoming entryway with elevators and little in the way signage, there are now two large front desks and receptionists to greet people.

“Certainly safety-wise it’s a huge change, and we have a better workf low,” said Betsy Dolan, Tompkins County Mental Health fiscal officer.

“Before, a nyone cou ld access the building whether they should be here or not,” said Frank Kruppa, Tompkins County Mental Health Commissioner, in his speech prior to the ribbon cutting. “Now we have this welcoming environment that our clients and the community are able to take advantage of.”

Included in the half-million dollar project are new, additional desks equipped with phones, located in a separate room behind the main desk so that those who are fielding calls aren’t distracted by the intake of clients. If there is no one available at the front desk to answer a phone call, that call gets rerouted to a receptionist on the third floor to ensure that someone can always be reached.

With the the department’s new Open Access program now in full swing, anyone concerned about a mental health issue can immediately receive care. Walkins are invited to come in any time between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on weekdays; on Tuesday and Wednesday the hours are extended until 6 p.m.

The Open Access program was funded by a state grant combined with federal funding. The funding was secured based on the success of a pilot

program that the department began in 2014, and the grants gave the department the ability to hire two new employees.

The federal grant will be cut next year, Kruppa said, but the state has remained committed to providing its share.

Kruppa said that the program will be able to function even with reduced funding, as it was always designed to be selfsustaining. Over the last year the department was also able to to hire a new deputy commissioner of mental health, Sharon MacDougall.

Heather Sanford has also joined the staff as the head of the newly implemented Personalized Recovery Oriented Services (PROS), which she described as a program that allows people with mental health issues (who are often also in recovery from substance abuse) to choose their own goals and pick classes that they believe will help them reach those goals.

According to Superintendent summer of 2011, conducted fieldwork and collaborated with Brown, at the outset a vision and

a mission were needed to guide and describe their educational process. The local community provided input through interviews conducted at: barbershops, hair salons, coffee shops and other public places within the district.

This led to a curriculum which included an anti-bullying initiative, a “social and emotional needs” program conducted during the first ten weeks of school that teaches mindfulness which integrates three subjects: Social Studies to teach students that it’s not “all of about me” and is tied to Mathematics and English, each with a “social and emotional needs” lesson. Mathematics might include a lesson about wages for work or the cost of food in another country.

English is key to the process because “all good literature is about human rights.” In high school, using the Social Studies core standards as a framework, students learn about civic participation through discussion and debate from various positions of power. Students are learning to find their voices.

You may well ask, “What are human rights?” United for Human Rights—an organization dedicated to implementing

a doctorate in English from the University of Illinois, after beginning his teaching career as an English teacher in Spain and landing in Illinois in the early 1990s.

He fielded several questions during his visit, emphasizing during his comments to the audience his belief in the community college system as a vehicle for students who may not be able to afford other highereducation options, or even college at all, and the importance of assisting them through programs such as affordable trade career training for high school juniors and seniors.

Reilly acknowledged the challenges the college is currently facing, but said he has experience in the tough spots that community colleges can face, particularly in his current position in Illinois. At Parkland, he said their state funding has been severely reduced, forcing them to make tough choices in order to survive.

“There’s a lot of economic pressures on students across the country, especially in the

developing, staffing and running an entirely new satellite campus in Dansville.

Soscia said he can navigate the economic circumstances that face Tompkins County as they reflect much of the same problems where he works now, in Newburgh, New York. Soscia said personally he is risk-averse, and would bring that to the university in a measured capacity.

He advocated expanding the school’s reach, specifically in terms of vocationally connecting with students and the needs of the area.

Soscia further discussed with the audience their thoughts on being a good president of a community college, including remaining publicly visible and enhancing collaborations between TC3, Ithaca College and Cornell University. He expressed enthusiasm at the prospect of returning to Tompkins County in a capacity that allowed him to help people.

Factchecking Tom Reed’s Town Hall

The Mother Of Suffrage In Tompkins County Ma rc h i s wom e n’s hi s to r y month. To mark the month, the History Center Of Tompkins County will be hosting a bus trip to Seneca Falls on March 25 (register at thehistorycenter. net), to explore the town’s rich history in the suffrage movement as a cap to their current exhibit on notable women in Tompkins County. Here’s the story of one of them:

here a re nu merous names that are synonymous with the fight for women’s suffrage: Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Alice Paul and Lucy Burns.

But the truth of women’s suffrage, and the eventual ratification of the 19th amendment, speaks moreso to the activists of hundreds of women fighting for their right to vote from the bottom up, instilling the spirit

“The Universal Declaration of Human Rights” (adopted by the United Nations in 1948) on the local, regional, national and international level. The problem is that the Declaration is not an adopted international law; therefore there still are human rights abuses throughout the world. And in order for human rights to be understood and embedded in our daily lives, they need to be integrated into our education systems, which is where ICSD comes into play. As part of a national trend, ICSD school administrators, board members and teachers have spent the past six years working on a new trans-disciplinary teaching and learning approach. The goal is to develop the District’s 6,000 students into critical, empathetic, respectful thinkers and problem-solvers.

In Ithaca, that person was Louisa Riley.

Riley lived during a period of social revolution in the late19th century, at a time when around the world women were beginning to fight for – and succeed in gaining – the right to vote. It was a changing world of changing ideals and, in the slowly-prog ressing United States, people like Riley began to take notice.

Riley, who moved to Tompabout human rights is of great concern,” Linda Glaser, chairperson of ICUCME, said. “Educating the next generation plays a big part in developing peaceful solutions.”

Coyle said that in general, students in ICSD are worried about justice for their friends and families, worried about being the other [non-white] people in their community.

Brown said he gets letters from first to eighth grade students who are afraid about access to education; they are worried that people of color will be excluded from diversity in education by whites because they look different.

This led to a discussion about teaching challenges such as teaching the difficult parts of our history (e.g. United States Japanese internment camps), current events (e.g. United States refugee and Muslim ban policies), even the current United States president’s contentious unreliable tweeting habit.

Before the later years of the 1800s, it may not have been acceptable to even speak openly about suffrage, much less advocate for it. continued on page 10

or past social, cultural and historical events but, they said, the bad stories have to be shared.

And how do we all learn to empathetically handle conflict?

Coyle responded by saying that students are taught to be critical thinkers by approaching topics from a variety of perspectives. There are multiple stories and histories and an inherent danger of the single story. The schools must have a respect for the truth and to search for the truth. If students have questions, their voices must be heard, all perspectives of a topic such as a refugee policy must be considered without a teacher taking a stand or expressing an opinion, but rather functioning as a discussion facilitator. This shifts the power structure to be more inclusive with human rights providing empathy and giving students the tools for critical thinking. This way, Coyle said, everyone learns.

Does his record support “all-of-the-above” energy policy? Though his voting record vastly outweighs dirty energy sources over clean energy, Reed has voted several times in support of clean energy funding bills through Congress. He has also sponsored tax credit legislation for the wind and solar energy sector – even winning an award for it from the Solar Energy Industries Association.

So, yes, he has supported “allof-the-above” energy policy, but one that still places heavy emphasis on fossil fuels.

Has he been supportive of giving school choice without taking money from public education? Reed doesn’t have a significant voting record on education issues as it relates to t he new administration (though, in 2011, he did vote for charter school vouchers for Washington D.C. students) but, at Saturday’s town hall, said he didn’t believe removing funding from public schools was the correct solution to bolstering school choice.

Does he have a record of advocating for LGBTQ rights on the House f loor? While there is little voting record to report on, Reed voted against a repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell legislation in 2010, a law which in effect was a ban on homosexual members of the armed forces. In 2016, he broke party lines when he voted in support of prohibiting funding to any government contractor found implicit in the discrimination of anyone on the basis of sexual identity or gender orientation, one of just 29 Republicans in the house (seven of whom were from New York) to do so.

would guess that most Saturdays, if it snows before dawn, one won’t find many footprints on the sidewalk outside my apartment on South Plain Street at 7 a.m. (I say guess, because one sure won’t find mine.)

It was different on Saturday, March 11 when there was an 8 a.m. town hall meeting with Ithaca’s representative in Congress, Tom Reed, three blocks away at the Southside Community Center, and the early morning snow was tamped solid with multiple treads.

A crowd turned out to meet Representative Reed because he does not come this way often. Reed is a conservative Republican and Ithaca is largely liberal and Democratic. The city was gerrymandered into Reed’s rural, right-leaning district to negate its political influence, and Reed tends to ignore his constituency here to the point of complete neglect.

In February, Reed made a rare trip to his Ithaca office because citizens who asked for a meeting with him said they would not leave until he came or called, and had been there three days.

Reed finally showed up, late at night, and met with the group for ninety minutes, and announced plans for a town hall meeting in Ithaca.

Even with a public meeting, Reed stays difficult to see. He scheduled the meeting for 8 a.m. on a winter week-

end, a time when it might be freezing, and has not been light long, and most people have a day off, and are in bed.

Tickets would be distributed at 7 a.m., meaning people would in fact need to get up in the dark.

People did. I talked with a woman who got there at 5 a.m. She said there was already a line. Before they started giving out tickets, the line was down S. Plain St. and around the corner, down Green Street. They had to start a second line, going the other way.

Clearly, the Center would be full.

Speakers were set up on the street for the overflow crowd. Plain Street was closed to car traffic.

Ithaca Bakery was there with cookies, brownies, and pastries for free, or for a donation to the Center, which was nice, but it was about ten degrees out, and they froze. People donated anyway.

Gimme Coffee was also set up on the street. I asked how much coffee they brought. By starting time, it looked like about 700 people total.

They said, 20 gallons I asked if they bothered bringing decaf. They did, but just one urn.

Reed arrived around 8 a.m. He is bald-headed and wasn’t wearing a hat, as if it wasn’t cold. It was cold, of course, to the people who had tick-

Dr. Nia Nunn introduced Reed, with a preface about Southside, a traditionally African-American neighborhood, and the Center, founded in 1934, as “a place of social transformation.”

Reed took the microphone and thanked her, addressing her not as “Dr. Nunn” nor “Ms. Nunn” nor even “Nia,” but “Nina,” twice.

I didn’t notice any boos for that, but the first came soon, when Reed spoke of his opposition to the Affordable Care Act. He admonished the crowd that “maybe it works for you, but I know hundreds of millions of people it affects adversely,” which seemed possibly exaggerated, if not completely untrue.

There were jeers for his opposition to the Environmental Protection Agency and Planned Parenthood. The first chant of the day was “Do your job,” from a constituency that supYourLetters contin u ed from page 6

health and safety is our number one priority. Although it seems like there is less and less we can control for these days, we can still determine what we think is beneficial for their education. And now more than ever, with an anti-public school education secretary in Washington, and a pro-privatization governor in Albany, public school parents and advocates must determine what is best for our children’s education while we still can.

The most effective way parents can influence the direction of public education is to opt their children out of countless classroom hours preparing for and taking high-stakes tests. The 3-8 ELA tests are set to begin March 28th, these are the same developmentally inappropriate Common Core curriculum based tests that are still being used to rank, sort, and punish public school districts. These are the same tests that over 260,000 public school students refused to take last year and whose grades Governor Cuomo claimed were, “meaningless to the students”. These are the same tests that are being used to increase the stranglehold of for-profit corporate computer-based testing, digital learning platforms, and the data mining of sensitive student information.

There were no outright shoutdowns or prolonged interruptions.

When citizens got the microphone for questions, there were no insults or incivility.

The event was peaceable, and ended on time. Reed had another town hall event in Ovid to attend, a much smaller meeting, but at a considerably more hospitable hour.

Reed didn’t say anything to indicate he cared, but one wonders if he even considered that when 700 people get up at dawn on a weekend and stand in the cold for hours to speak with you, you should listen. It didn’t seem that he did. The last chant of the day came as Reed exited for his car: “This Is What Democracy Looks Like.”

Maguire Sues The City?

he people of Ithaca made their wishes clear to the City’s Planning and Economic Development Committee. A car dealership NEVER brings wholesome neighborhood activity into an area. If you look at the surroundings of any dealership, you will find fast food joints, mini-marts and the like. Ithaca needs family-friendly housing and space for sustainable small local businesses, not car dealerships. There is also the nearby waterfront and the walking/ biking trail that was just put in. Ugly car dealership. Run-off into the lake from the extensive parking lot and dirty vehicle byproducts. Ithaca can and WANTS to do better. Maguire is messing with the will of the people.

If you choose to act like a soulless corporation, be prepared to be viewed not as a friendly neighborhood business but as an enemy of the people of Ithaca.

In our cover story this week, we’ve sought to learn more about the organizing movement of the county’s progressives who, after eight years of complacency under the Obama administration, have experienced an “awakening” of sorts, a realization that appearances and speaking out may actually count for something. To have that resurgence manifested in the troubling development of a clearly clueless and ignorant individual becoming leader of the free world doesn’t exactly make for an easy awakening – it tends to become rather explosive.

On Saturday we saw the worst of partisan politics, ignorance versus ignorance, no effort of common ground. We saw rage and disappointment and leaving there, saw little confidence anything might change.

Reed got the image of him confronting the Ithaca extremist. But the silver lining we got is practice.

In the four town halls held that day, the moments we could characterize as productive were amid the calm, the moments where it was one person and the congressman speaking eye to eye about the policies being implemented as it affected them at the most basic level. It wasn’t about talking points (though it may have had the tinge of “I have my beliefs,” we heard once in a while); it was about tangible impact, a reality that transcends politics. It connected the dots between the top and the bottom.

So we’ve established a relationship, however rocky and – in the Congressman’s words – we now know he cares and would like to have a discussion. So now that we’ve got all the rage out of our system, let’s give dialogue a go in this “war of ideas” that’s taking place here. We think back to the very foundations of our country – those who wanted their own government versus those who wanted to stay with England under new terms – and realize eventually, one side won. But both sides crossed the finish line together.

“We don’t win anymore,” our tufted Commander In Chief once said. And you know, maybe we don’t.

Let’s at least try to try and win, if only for our slice of the constituency to have a seat at the table.

Tom Reed U.S. Congress Congressman Reed and his cohorts on the House Ways and Means committee provided their initial markup to the American Healthcare Act, the repeal and replace plan for the Affordable Care Act. That markup passed the committee and now sits on the house floor where it awaits an incredibly long debate period.

The Congressional Budget Office released its account for the potential fiscal impacts of the AHA. The congressman displayed hesitation intrusting the CBO when asked about the topic at his town hall in Pulteney over the weekend. “The CBO’s estimate confirms that a more patient centered health care system is finally on the way for hard working American families,” said the congressman in a statement Tuesday. “These reforms will lower premiums and increase access to quality health care while reducing the federal deficit by $337 Billion and taxes by $880 Billion.”

The statement made no mention of the claim that 14 million Americans could lose their coverage under the act.

Political moods are changing in the Southern Tier’s most liberal city.

thaca is a staunchly progressive city.

It’s not even an argument. The legacy is there, “the seat of the only county in New York to vote for Obama over Clinton in ‘08, the only one to pull for Bernie in ‘16, a consistently blue stronghold for decades.” After this past weekend, it’s no secret nor surprise that Ithaca does not look favorably upon its congressman, nor its party. Last November, only nine out of every 100 ballots from the city were cast in favor of the now fourth term incumbent, Tom Reed. Such an outcome, though not favored by Tompkins Democrats by any means, could have been plainly expected on November 8th, 2016.

However, that night at the Hotel Ithaca served a far more jarring blow to local Democrats as they gathered only to watch state after state turn red in favor of the now President Trump. With every passing minute, another seat was emptied as Tompkins blues put on their jackets, stepped out into the rain and drove home with the blues.

In the 127 days since, a political renaissance has rejuvenated the battered city into a seemingly constant state of civil demonstration. But what’s driving this force is not the “usual suspects” according to Martha Robertson, county legislator and former elector challenger of Congressman Reed.

Robertson tells tales of the busses of Ithacans heading to the Women’s March in Washington, D.C. on January 21st, where discussions were held at length as to actions moving forward. At one point, Robertson tells, someone posed the question “Who here has been taken part in political activism?” to which she says only three or four hands on the bus of around 50 answered in the affirmative.

Those 47 hands were certainly not alone.

More than 10,000 of their friends and neighbors took to the Ithaca Commons to march on that same day and that new found energy has only been coupled in event after event. With time, that energy – paired with some social media coordination – has resulted in a sprouting sea of organizations across the district.

“I put the term ‘organizations’ in air quotes. There’s not a lot of organization here,” laughs Robertson jokingly. “There’s so much energy and ever so often I’ll say to somebody, ‘You know there’s a Democratic party? You can come to our meetings.’”

Many of them have. Tompkins County Democratic Committee Chair, Irene Stein, says the committee has brought on several new members in the last few months and “is back to work and will prevail.” But

this draws into question whether this new transfusion of new blood and new energy can coexist within the aged veins of the Democratic Party.

“Is the Democratic Party relevant? Absolutely,” says Leslie Danks Burke, former challenger for State Senator Tom O’Mara’s seat. “The Democratic Party used to be, and should get back to being, the party of the small guy. And with this conversation developing where we’re talking more about populism on the right and the left, the democratic party has a real goal to step into there.”

Populism. n. Defined as: support for the concerns of ordinary people. This ‘Word of the Day,’ as defined here by Oxford Dictionary, was the basis for the rise of Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign which was a hard fought battle in the hills of Tompkins.

Sanders grabbed 57 percent of the vote in the 23rd District with 29,980 votes. His right-wing branded populist counterpart, Donald Trump, received a comparable 31,764 votes.

“I got excited about Bernie Sanders, and that was actually the trigger for getting organized and getting involved,” says Joel Blizzard. “I started making phone calls and getting involved in the campaign and contributing to the campaign which is something I had never done before for a candidate of any [party].”

Blizzard now sits on the organizing committee for Indivisible of the Southern Tier/Finger Lakes, a group that serves to resist the Trump Administration’s agenda and spread political information across New York’s 23rd Congressional District.

However, Blizzard’s story is not an unusual one.

“I think seeing some of the new policies being pushed forward by this administration definitely motivated my friends and colleagues with The Catholic Workers to take an additional step in their activism and to get other people involved too,” says Laurie Konwinski, a regular participant with the activist group. “I’m seeing new people. I’m seeing people I haven’t known from other activist circles wanting to get involved and wanting to have their voice heard and making an organized effort to do so.”

Konwinski leads up the Public Policy and Advocacy arm of Catholic Charities (a completely different entity than Catholic Workers) which serves to help the poor, refugees and other marginalized groups. She says that most of the people she sees getting involved are doing so mainly along a line

of issues rather than a partisan line. Now with a few months under their belt and the growing girth of momentum those lines are beginning to criss-cross.

On Valentine’s Day, all of that crisscrossing materialized at a sit-in on Congressman Reed’s office in Ithaca. When the man himself showed up in the wee small hours of the morning two days later, the respectful dialogue that ensued reflected not just a single issue, but a grab bag of topics from immigration to renewable energy.

The workers self moderated their discussion that evening and coordinated questioning in a manner that Reed even complimented them on saying it was very kind and highly effective. Another notion to point out is that most of that time, the only elected official in the room was Reed.

Everyone else was an activist, a journalist, or a staffer. This instance itself was the very embodiment of “grassroots.” Though Mayor Myrick and Aldermen Murtagh and Nguyen made visits to the sit-in, the entire thing was conducted on the whim and by the way of the Catholic Workers.

In the early hours of February 17th, the sit-in was over and everyone returned home with dreary eyes, but Konwinski describes this moment as an awakening. The new heightened awareness that drew everyone to the congressman’s office in the first place was indicative of a new situation, a new era.

So in turning the page onto a new chapter of the book, the stage must be set with new characters. On the playbill is of course the old players, but it’s very well the new characters that will drive the plot forward.

The Catholic Workers, Indivisible, Rise Up Ithaca, Tompkins County Progressives and countless others have all made themselves heard on that list.

With the characters beginning to find their way off of Facebook and listservs and onto the ground organizing, the question then becomes how will things coagulate moving forward.

Blizzard describes indivisible as still being in quite a liquid state, but it wouldn’t surprise him if many of the work he’s seen done so far would take a direct effect in elections as soon as this month. He cites Faith Tyler’s organization around the Town of Groton’s local elections, pointing out that many of the individuals helping out there also contribute with Indivisible circles as well.

When the time comes for Democrats to send forth their champion to square off against Reed in 2018, Blizzard thinks it could very well be Indivisible, as well as Th e

some of the other grassroots groups, that create the backbone of that campaign.

However, one dark shadow looms over the left from eight years ago: the Tea Party movement. Drawing on the same populist message, a recidivism of seemingly “early American” ideals and lack of formal power structure bridge the ideological gap between the Tea Party and the beginnings of what could be its more liberal counterpart seen in the small activist groups of today.

The original Indivisible “guide” states itself “you probably deeply disagree with the principles and positions of the Tea Party.

But we can all learn from their success in influencing the national debate and the behavior of national policymakers.”

“To me it has that false equivalency,” says Blizzard. “I’d say that because we’re borrowing the tactics of the Tea Party which are small groups of people involved in high level organizing within local communities. I think we have more meaningful of a backbone. We’re coming from the idea that we’re defending equality and liberty in the sense that this is for all people and not just our friends.”

The comparison to the Tea Party is not a light one by any means. During the 2010 midterms, the landscape of Congress was rearranged with doctors and businessmen unseating seasoned, and often more moderate, Republicans across the country. A similar schism could take place on the the other side of the aisle just twenty months from now.

At this point, neither the local activist groups nor the democratic establishment seems to be playing out that storyline.

“The other groups that have sprung up have slightly different agendas but often will agree with us and many who don’t will work to help us,” says Stein. “We’ve always been trying to get our committee as diverse as possible and that includes philosophical diversity within the framework of the democratic values.”

Stein and the Democrats have hosted listening sessions on the party’s platform and are sponsoring a workshop for citizens looking to run for office on March 25th. Danks Burke has also dusted herself off from the 2016 election season and has founded the Trailblazers PAC to support grassroots candidates in New York and Pennsylvania.

“What I see is we’re at a point in American politics where people are engaging with their elected officials in a conversation in a way that we haven’t seen in the last couple of decades,” says Danks Burke. “I think that’s a good thing.”•

This was true for Tompkins County, which was – at the time – a section of the state dictated by agriculture and conservative values said Karen Pastorello, a professor of Women’s History at Tompkins-Cortland Community College who is currently working on a book of the women’s suffrage movement in New York State.

“I think initially, women in Tompkins County – because it was a predominantly rural area – were maybe a little more conservative than you might have expected,” said Pastorello.

en’s club in 1895, later identifying some among is membership interested in backing the cause of women’s suffrage. That group later branched off on its own into a political “study club,” dedicated to securing suffrage at the state level.

In the area around Ithaca specifically, the membership consisted mostly of an affluent slew of “teachers and widows,” as she put it, a small group numbering less than 20 or 30 women meeting in the lakeside homes of the movement’s leadership but later expanded to a broader segment of the middle class and, at Cornell, on campus as well. “ There were some fa rmer’s w ives involved,” Pastorello said, adding – due to either a lack of writing implements or busy schedules on the farm – few records exist of their activism. “The records there are less plentiful for middle or upper class or even college-educated women.”

The real rural activism, she said, occurred around the granges, the first organizations which really allowed women influence and agency in decision making at that time.

From there, they latched onto the growing political shift brought on by the wave of the temperance movement (a big movement in Tompkins County) as the burgeoning foundation of this grassroots movement.

It took time to catch on.

By the turn of the 20th century, these pockets of activism had become fairly commonplace in cities and towns throughout New York State, with more than 450 political equality clubs operating by the time the 19th Amendment was passed in 1917. Even in Newfield and Groton, still predominantly rural, clubs were founded, often by the wives of prominent businessmen in the community.

“They were common,” she said, “but Ithaca’s (formally founded as a suffrage organization in 1899) was one of the first.”

But Ithaca – and Tompkins County – is also significant in the fact that it was one of just five counties that successfully voted to pass a resolution for suffrage at the state level in 1915. Going even further back, two conventions for women’s suffrage – one in 1894 and another in 1911 – were held, due in part to Cornell’s presence and the sympathy of the university’s founder, Ezra Cornell, to the movement: Cornell had even gone so far as to invite Susan B. Anthony to speak at the university in 1869, long before the momentum for women’s suffrage truly began to build.

But as literature began to circulate and suffrage began to marry itself with other reformist movements, such as temperance, and with the affiliation and endorsement of those in higher education, the movement gradually began to gain mainstream acceptance and build the base necessary to enable such groups as the National American Woman Suffrage Association, which advocated for states to be allowed to enact suffrage amendments, and later the National Woman’s Party, which eventually secured the right to vote for all women with the signing of the 19th amendment in 1920.

And in their fight, they had the years of groundwork from people like Riley to lean on.

IC hosts city’s comic extravaganza

T

he art form of comics is a deep love of mine. And I have a deep love for the creators of comics.

Thus, I always love writing about the Ithacon, Ithaca’s annual comic book convention. It is an odd miracle that a city as small as Ithaca (pop.

30,000) hosts an annual (sometimes bi-annual) comic book convention.

The significant thing about this year’s convention, Ithacon 42, is that it will be expanded to two days – Saturday, March 25 and Sunday March 26.

And it will be held at the Emerson Suites at Phillips Hall at Ithaca College. The Emerson Suites are an extraordinarily beautiful venue (with a spectacular panoramic view overlooking Cayuga Lake).

The Ithacon will feature guest artists and writers, venders selling comics and related merchandise, panel discussions, a video program, face painting and other crafts.

Admission is free and open to all ages.

There will be several panel discussions on topics such as “How I Broke into Comics”, game design, and publishing. Other activities include a keynote address by fantasy novelist Tamora Pierce, a costume/cosplay parade, workshops for aspiring artists and writers, and a Zombie Maze.

Troopers from the 501st Legion, a world-class Star Wars costuming organization are planning to attend.

Founded in the mid-1970s, the Comic Book Club of Ithaca (CBCI) is the oldest continuously running comic book club in the country. The Ithacon 42 co-chairs are Bill Turner, a co-founder of the CBCI, and Katharine Kittredge, a professor of English at Ithaca College, and co-creator of the Pippi to Ripley Conference.

(The Pippi to Ripley Conferences are symposiums on the role of women and girls in science fiction and fantasy. I’ve attended one. It was fun.)

Act I: A Trip Down Memory Lane The very first Ithacon took place in 1976. It was the Bi-Centennial Year. The president was Gerald

Ford whose main accomplishment was pardoning Richard Nixon for an amazing laundry list of crimes.

Over the decades, the convention had several homes in Ithaca – the Greater Ithaca Activities Center, the Masonic Temple, the Boynton Middle School, the Woman’s Community Building, and the former Race Office Supplies on the Ithaca Commons. The partnership with Ithaca College began in 2014 with Ithacon 39.

The Ithacon has hosted a lot of heavyweight comics creators over the years: Joe Simon, who co-created Captain America with Jack Kirby.

Kurt Busiek, who writes the Astro City books (which I think are one of the greatest things ever created in the art form). Stephen Wacker, the current editor of the Spider-Man line at Marvel.

Act II: The Church of What’s Happening Now Being an old guy at death’s door, my knowledge of comics is sort of confined to the Silver Age. But to swipe a phrase from Stephen King – “the Church of What’s Happening Now” – let’s take a look at the guest list for Ithacon 42. These people are what’s happening in comics right now, here in the future-world of 2017…

latest novel Battle Magic is Book 3 of The Circle Reforged series.

Artist Howard Simpson has worked for DC comics, Dark Horse, Valiant, and Marvel, drawing everything from Green Lantern to Magnus Robot Fighter. He has also worked as a commercial artist for Disney, Warner Bros., Bantam Books, Sony, HBO and various Fortune 500 companies.

Veteran comic book artist Bill Anderson has worked on scores of titles including The Amazing Spider-Man for Marvel Comics, Batman for DC Comics, and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark for Claypool.

Horror writer Kevin Lucia is the author of the short story collection Things Slip Through and the novellas Devourer of Souls, Through a Mirror, Darkly, and A Night at Old Webb.

I’ve known comic book writer Tom Peyer since we were teenage cartoonists in Syracuse, N.Y. in the 1970s. He has written almost every major comic book character at one time or another. (And his forte is wit. He is a funny guy.)

His most recent works include Batman ’66 and Convergence: The Atom #1 for DC Comics.

Ithaca’s own Roger Stern has written SpiderMan, Captain America, Iron Man, and The Avengers for Marvel, and Superman, The Atom, and The Justice League for DC. He has written three novels, including the New York Times bestseller The Death and Life of Superman.

Jim Shooter was the Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics from 1978 to 1987. He went on to found Voyager Communications in 1989 and served as Editor-in-Chief of the Valiant imprint.

He later founded Defiant and Broadway Comics.

He currently serves as the Creative Director for Illustrated Media Group.

Native Ithacan Frank Cammuso is both an editorial cartoonist, and the creator of several graphic novel series including The Misadventures of Salem Hyde, The Knights of the Lunch Table, and the noir-inspired Max Hamm.

I am a huge fan of the work of fantasy artist Storn Cook who creates paintings for collectable card sets. Recent work includes art for Clash of the Dragons, a video game/ CCG, and the cover art for the sword-andsorcery novel The Soldier and the Slave.

Are we numb yet? There’s more: Fantasy artist Alan Pollack has painted illustrations for card sets like Magic: The Gathering and World of Warcraft. He also paints cover illustrations for fantasy and science fiction novels, with recent titles including Cruel Zinc Melodies and The Two Worlds.

Syracuse’s own Joe Orsak, is the artist of the graphic novels The Yellow Rose of Texas and Virgin Vampires. He is currently working on a graphic novel about John Dillinger.

Cartoonist Ken Wheaton has worked on many TV tie-in comics such as Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol and Bart Simpson’s Manual of Mischief. He drew several issues of IDW’s Popeye series, and is currently working on a creator-owned project The Doomsday Brigade.

Writer/cartoonist Jon Haeffner worked on the Nicktoons series Alien Dawn, and is the creator of the web-comics Phantom Spiral and Phantom Hurricane.

And…if your eyeballs haven’t totally rolled back into your head, yet…there are more creators that you can check out at the comic book club website.

Act III: You Will Have Fun To wrap up here, I’m going to suggest that the Perspicacious Reader attend Ithacon 42.

Hopefully, it will make us all feel better.

Any rational person has felt badly since Nov. 8, 2016 when the Electoral College (whoever those people are) handed the presidency of the United States to a person with no viable qualifications to be president, and who appears to be mentally ill. A bit of escape may be a good thing before we all get back to resisting.

And I think you will have fun.

When I was a youngster, comics were considered a low-rent pulp medium with a certain amount of opprobrium attached to them. And comic conventions were a cult world of “fans”.

Now, here in the 21st century, “comics” have morphed into “graphic novels” which are reviewed in important smarty-pants publications, and appear on Best Novel lists. Libraries and bookstores have comics and graphic novel sections, and every town of any size has a comic book store or two.

All this would have been unimaginable in my youth.

Comic book conventions here in the 21st century seem to be attended by ordinary people and families as opposed to “fans”. And I think the Ithacon is a perfect size. It’s large enough for there to be a lot of people to meet and talk to, and things to see and do…but small enough to be sort of homey. (The big conventions like the San Diego Comicon, although fun, have become so vast they are disorienting).

When I was young, being a Marvel Comics reader (a “Marvelite” as we called it in those days) was like being in a secret club or lodge.

Now, both the Marvel and DC characters appear in insanely expensive blockbuster movies with planetary distribution.

They have become a modern 21st century mythology. People from all over planet Earth know and love these heroes.

These characters belong to all of us now…and a comic book convention like the Ithacon is for everybody.

rooklyn’s avant-pop twisters Ava Luna are sweetly intense; and varied as hell. The band inhabits some distant and surreal shores with each densely packed composition they forge. Part of their charm is their propensity for deviation. They revel in odd combinations and intricate individuality, continually pushing for, and finding, new depth. Music is both a heart and a brain, and Ava Luna travels this connected byway with confidence and daring: an art rock band with a love for experimentation.

“The last couple of albums have been jams generated together in a room and then edited into workable song structures, a la ‘70s Miles Davis or Can,” noted drummer Julian Fader.

“Carlos [Hernandez] has really evolved into that editor role and he’s gotten really good at teasing great songs out of endless grooves. We’re working on a bunch of new material right now and a lot of it has just been long drum, bass, and keyboard sessions. He’s able to dive into these sessions and somehow pull out a song. Then we start taking turns overdubbing and before you know it, it’s a hit.”

Ava Luna’s “hits” are wild. They’re unique for their separation and for their proximity. The band is adept at never fully committing or compromising a composition, always leaving that fertile door ever so ajar. This allows for a sort of maximization of creativity and nuance. The band can dip, dive, and glide, any which way, often finding special grooves in jaunts of funk, nu-soul and post punk gravity.

There’s a jazz sensibility that glosses the group’s inner core and it beams tenfold on their last release, 2015’s Infinite House: a record of cubist maturity and hefty resonance.

“The band has always been five separate people, each of whom has disparate ideas of what we want out of a song,” Fader explained. “As the albums pass, we simply get better and better at following through on our ideas. Carlos and I have been running a recording studio in Brooklyn for the last five years, so the more production work we do for other people, the more we’re able to help our

own band realize its sonic dreams. Infinite House was recorded almost two years ago now, so actually, it feels old. The new material we’re working on feels fresher and better.”

If there’s a particularly lush portal for Ava Luna, it’s opened by their funk sensibility. With each passing release, the band tunnels a wider gateway towards this bouncy and poetic form. Here, the joy of interaction meets the band’s more edgy gravitation: a perfect symbiosis and propulsive platform. Like NYC’s legendary no-wave and experimental bands

before them, the group knows just what diameter to measure when pushing their limits. Funk seems to be the stable bridge for each varying form the band entertains.

There’s a deep joy here.

“In the past, we’ve definitely fetishized misery a little bit,” Fader admits. “There’s a Groucho Marx quote that we used to use as our bio: ‘Wouldn’t want to be a part of any group that would have me.’ I definitely don’t want to speak for anybody else, but there’s something appealing about just assuming the world is out to get you and that somehow, you are above all the bulls***. As we’ve all crossed the threshold into our 30s, I feel like that “why me?” concept is starting to dissipate, and that’s a good thing. I want to be happy and feel joy and excitement, and I do feel that when we play and record. It’s the highest honor to get to work creatively with everyone in the band.”

There’s a distinct freeness to their music and experiencing it is both moving and fun. Art rock can be mind bending and uplifting, and Ava Luna takes you there and beyond. •

The civil rights movement for immigrants

he Long Ride, a new and timely documentary chronicling the beginning of the civil rights movement for immigrant workers in the United States, screens on Monday, March 19, at Cornell Cinema in Willard Straight Hall at 7 PM. Free and open to the public, the screening kicks off Union Days activities at Cornell’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR).

“The annual ILR Union Days, sponsored by the Workers Center at Cornell, celebrates the labor movement and encourages students to participate in the social movement for worker rights,” said Risa Lieberwitz, professor in Cornell’s Department of Labor Relations, Law, and History, and event organizer.

“This important and exciting film shows the power of social movements for immigrant rights, civil rights, and labor

rights joining together to fight for the human rights of immigrant workers in the U.S.,” she said.

The documentary tells the story of the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride when 900 people traveled on 18 buses from 10 cities over the course of 12 days to Flushing Meadows, New York, to attend the 100,000-person immigrants’ rights rally – the largest ever at the time. Their travel adventure was inspired by the Freedom Riders from the 1960s when people rode on buses to southern states to challenge segregation.

The 77-minute-long film focuses on characters, such as Rigoberto Valdez, riding in the bus from Northern California. He came to the United States from Mexico with his parents when he was two. His parents were farmworkers picking grapes in Indio, California in fields without shade, drinking water, or bathrooms.

Now the director of organizing and a vice president at the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770 in Los Angeles, Valdez organizes workers to form

unions so that they can have safe working conditions and benefits, such as paid retirement.

These are “hard working people that put food on our table, that clean our office floors, and take out our garbage, and care for us when we are sick, and care for our elderly, and care for our children. They deserve better,” he says.

The documentary includes historical film footage, including a debate in 1984 between presidential candidates, Ronald Reagan, a Republican, and Walter Mondale, a Democrat. Reagan said he believed “in the idea of amnesty for people who put down roots” in the U.S. Another historical film clip shows Reagan and lawmakers at the signing ceremony for the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) enacted in 1986. The law penalizes employers who hire undocumented workers. But Valdez contends the law has never benefited workers.

Valerie Lapin, the film’s producer and director, points out that the immigration debate is not just about legal status.

She said, “The ride showed that immigrants don’t have the same rights in the workplace,” as citizens do.

For example, employers can get around compliance with the IRCA by claiming not to know the workers’ legal status and hiring them as independent contractors ineligible for unemployment or worker’s compensation benefits.

The documentary shows the bus riders’ meetings with Congressional aides and politicians at the U.S. Capitol. There is footage of now-deceased Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and Congressman John Lewis (D-GA), one of the original Freedom Riders in the 1960s.

Lapin said the ride helped to inspire the introduction of immigration legislation.

The U.S. Senate passed a comprehensive immigration bill in 2013, but the measure died when there was no action in the House of Representatives.

The documentary includes an interview with Mauricio Barrera who came to the U.S. to escape violence in El Salvador in 1978. Recalling what transpired, a tearyeyed Barrera tells how his sister in San Francisco said, “if you are afraid of being killed by the government, come if you can.”

Proud to now live in the U.S., Bacerra worked for Hyatt for 35 years. He said he appreciates his ability to provide a better future for his two daughters than they would have had if they remained in El Salvador.

I wasn’t good until I was in the business at least nine years, and possibly as much as 12 years, so that would have been ’92 to ’95. By the way, part of why I think I got good was that I spent 100% of my time on the road. I had no home whatsoever. But I got started in Manhattan. I went to an open-mic in Rochester, and I fell instantly in love with it, and graduated college six weeks later.

And they called me back, actually, to be the opening act for some professionals on their first professional weekend; they were trying to do shows on Friday and Saturday at this bar. So I took that as encouragement also, that of all the open-mic-ers, I was the one invited to be the opener on the first weekend. Those sort of little affirmations can really keep you going.

IT: Can you tell us some of your influences?

KB: Letterman and Seinfeld, as an adult, as a comedian, were my influences. I couldn’t believe what I saw Letterman do, in the early years. I’m talking, maybe he already had his late night show, maybe, I can’t remember, but I used to see him on panels, like doing “Hollywood Squares”, you know, or judging on “The Gong Show”, and I’ll never forget - there was a time when they used to feed celebrities the questions on “Hollywood Squares” so that they could prep funny answers. And one time they said to Letterman, “Is it true that chimpanzees and other simians are being trained to replace certain medical facilities

in Minnesota or Idaho or Iowa, wherever.”

And he said, “Yes. And, you know, nothing aids my recuperatory powers more than the smell of Rhesus monkeys tending to my every need.”

I had an opportunity to go to school and to pursue everything I wanted to do here. I am very grateful for that. And I want that to be for others too,” she said.

Lapin said she hopes the film is used as a tool to build a movement, educate people about the immigration issue, and ultimately get some kind of relief, such as comprehensive immigration reform.

“The broken immigration system is infringing on people’s human and civil rights; destroying families; and wreaking havoc on our economy,” she said.

Both Lapin and Valdez, the union organizer, are scheduled to participate in a question and answer session following the screening. •

is the season when college baseball and softball teams head south to get in some games, and I was among the thousands of fans that descended on the Clermont, Florida area last week to catch a few games and get some sun. As I was watching my daughter play her final spring trip games (for Alfred University), someone said, “I am going to miss this so much when my daughter graduates. I may need therapy.� I replied, “I have another daugh-

Congratulations to junior Taryn Cordani of the Ithaca College women’s track & field team. Taryn won her second national title in as many days as she finished first in the 3,000-meter field (out of 17 runners) with a time of 9:42.43 at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships at Al B. Carius Track (her time set a track record).

It was part of a great collective effort that saw the Bombers finish as national runnerup as a team, which is the highest finish ever for any Ithaca College track team.

In last week’s column, I listed several Ithaca High alums who have taken their leadership skills to the collegiate level, but I missed one. Connor Manning graduated from Guilford College last May, where he

served as team captain and established the school career record for face-off wins with 513. Nate Bates - the coach that recruited Connor to play at Guilford – was recently named the head coach at William Peace University in North Carolina, and he has hired Manning to be the recruiting coordinator for both the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams. On the W.P.U. website, Bates is quoted as saying, “I couldn’t be more excited to add Connor to our staff. I recruited Connor to play at Guilford College and had the pleasure of coaching him and watching him become an outstanding college lacrosse player. His knowledge of the sport, tireless work ethic and professional demeanor will go a long way in building our WPU Lacrosse brand.â€? •

Ensconced in the friendly confines of Lynah Rink, Cornell took care of business Saturday to force the tie-breaker, giving the fans a few more palpitations by falling behind on Sunday, then coming up big for a 2-1 series-clinching win. Third-seeded Cornell (20-7-5) will advance to play second-seeded Union in the ECAC Hockey Championship semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid.

The Ithaca College baseball team headed all the way out to the west coast, and the time change apparently made them sleep through the first eight innings of their opener. However, the Bombers did wake up in the ninth inning, scoring five times to take a 10-8 victory over Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.

The Bomber softball team is also in California this week, and they entered the season ranked #25. It is worthy of note that

t’s hard to believe that the individuals currently leading (and currently aiming to lead) this country have gotten away with as much slander and false logic as they have. If you want to listen to something extremely absurd and offensive -- something that spits vitriol at the meaning of reason and truth -- just listen in to the confirmation hearings that have been going on the past month. These pathetic attempts at honesty make me think of an essay George Orwell wrote entitled Politics and the English Language.

One thing you could do this weekend is take the time and read this piece of brilliance, if you haven’t already. Orwell is intense and crystal clear in this deeply moving essay. He outlines specific ways people in power (e.g., writers, politicians, dictators) transverse the English language to deceive and mislead. Listening to Trump’s rouges gallery bumble and misdirect their true intentions during the confirmation hearings, is a good way to see this false way of argumentation in action. It’s really sad to listen to it (and makes your blood boil), but what you will hear clearly,

in a remarkably horrible way, is that these conservative buoys are masters in the art of deception. They sound very much like they’re telling the truth.

In my mind there is little to no deception in underground cassette tapes.

So here’s something you can also do this weekend to wash the bile of illusions from your chest: Grab the boombox from the closet and all your old doom, thrash, noise, jam, hardcore and Phish tapes, and crank ‘em loud! (I’m seeing those Morbid Saint, Atheist, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Hellhammer, DNA, and Merzbow tapes in my dreams). While you’re at it, draw some pictures. Drawing is a mindful and meditative practice, and I don’t buy for a second that you can’t draw: because everyone can. It’s an act of civil disobedience.

A beautiful film to watch that touches on these issues is Guillermo del Toro’s brilliant art vs. fascism film, Pan’s Labyrinth.

The film touches the place where love and creation forge, and ultimately dies, so intensely, that there are tears that flow abundantly each time I watch it.

Another film to check out is The Matrix, which subtlety hints at the breakdown of a consumer driven society, and makes a direct statement on the importance of believing in justice: ugly or not. It’s also so damn cool.

If you’re heading towards TCPL you might as well stock up on some things.
