ongressman Tom Reed held four town halls this past weekend across the 23rd Congressional District.

One of those stops was in Trumansburg.

The Ithaca Times was in attendance and highlighted a number of claims made by the Congressman we thought deserved additional exploration.

Do vocational and technical skills generate leave graduates with higher wages?

Vocational and technical training can encompass a wide variety of career choices from auto mechanics to cosmetology and the wages for these fields vary just as greatly. Based on 2016 Bureau of Labor statistics data, the median wage for vocationally trained construction workers is $22.88 an hour ($47,580 a year) whereas their classmates in culinary programs bring home a median $17.47 an hour ($36,340 a year).

Auto mechanics make $19.90 an hour ($41,400 a year), heating venting and air conditioning specialists earn $23.23 an hour ($48,320 a year) and cosmetologists make $14.23 an hour ($29,590 a year).

According to the same BLS report, workers with only a high school degree earned only $42,840 a year in comparison to those graduating with an associate’s degree, which is common to most technical programs, whom earn an average $54,510 a year. In most respects the congressman’s claim is valid.

Are India and China “the largest polluters across the board?”

This statement was made by the congressman in relation to the pollution of water resources.

A

t a solar-powered news conference on a sunny Wednesday in Lansing, management of the coal-fired Cayuga Operating Plant – and new partners Beowulf Energy, an international infrastructure holding company – announced plans for what will soon become the largest solar farm in Upstate New York.

The $25 million project, dubbed Cay uga Solar, w il l generate 18 megawatts of solar power (enough to power 3,100 homes, according to management) and allow the plant – which was facing shutdown as the state moves away from coal – to diversify the use of its 434acre property, allowing Cayuga Operating Plant to move toward its future goal of becoming an “energy park,” with a broad spectrum of renewable energy

sources to offset the loss of coal in this section of the state. The announcement, significant in the fact it is a renewable conversion at a legacy fossil fuel plant, is also a testament to the efficiency of the private sector: Cayuga Operating Plant was one of just four facilities in the United States highlighted by the Solar Energy Industry Association as being feasible for such a project to take place.

“Private investment is the reason why this project is going to work,” Jennifer Tavares, president of the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce, said on Wednesday.

While it’s unclear what the precise tax implications on the site or what the long-term job creation numbers will be, the

he latest proposal for the Harold’s Square housing project includes a new outdoor entry court, additional twelfth f loor apartments (on top of the ones added to the plan last fall), separate mechanical equipment storage space and more.

Now it just needs to get built.

The proposed 108-unit apartment complex for the Commons has undergone a few different permutations since it was first approved in 2013, these facade changes and structural modifications being the latest.

The developers have said the outcome of the combination of changes will ensure the financial viability of the project.

The approved changes are also accompanied by an appeal to the Tompkins County Industrial Development Agency for an updated tax abatement that

solar and wind. Over the last five sessions of congress, Reed has not sponsored or cosponsored legislation in regards to renewable energy tax credits. However, the house, with Reed’s vote, has continued to extend existing tax credits until the year 2020.

Did Reed write 16 letters to the Obama administration opposing the Paris Climate Accord before it was adopted and were those letters not given a response or acknowledgement?

The Times is still working diligently to confirm this question through Reed’s office and will update this as information becomes available.

Has Reed voted for expanded access to birth control?

The house has not effectively taken up a bill expressly supporting expanded access to birth control. The last major attempt was in 2015 with the Affordability IS Access Act. That measure was passed by the senate, but left to die in the house. The congressman may or may not have supported expanded access is

debate over provisions in other bills such as the Affordable Care Act or the American Healthcare Act, but that is unverifiable.

Does the budget call for increased funding for Federal Health Qualified Centers and does that support expanded access to birth control?

Interestingly enough, the FY 2017 budget does not call for increased funding for the Federal Health Qualified Centers (FHQC’s). However, that being said, the Health and Human Services budget at this time formally requests for an additional $13.521 million to $300 million for the Family Planning budget which includes appropriations for birth control under the Title X program.

Has Reed historically supported a “fully and respectably functioning” Environmental Protection Agency?

Reed told a February 6 conference call with the press the following: “What I’ve seen over the last six to eight years, the EPA has expanded its regulatory power

ing to World Bank data, there’s 8.84 cubic meters of freshwater resources for every person in America, but only 2.06 cubic meters per person in China and 1.12 cubic meters per person in India.

Without federal tax credits, would solar and wind industries be deployed to the scale they are today?

A U.S. Department of Energy report titled “Impacts of Federal Tax Credit Extensions on Renewable Deployment and Power Sector Emissions” concluded that the extended renewable energy tax credits would support greater investments in wind and solar than if those tax credits had not been extended.

While on the House Ways and Means committee did Reed write provisions for renewable energy tax credits?

It’s difficult to determine whether Reed did or did not physically write wording in legislation related to tax credits for 7–13,

would adjust for the higher construction costs incurred in light of the building changes, which was discussed at this month’s Tompkins County Industrial Development Agency meeting. According to David Lubin and McGuire Development Company’s application for the abatement, there is a 12 percent increase in the project’s cost.

The TCIDA will next meet on June 15. An agenda has not been published for that meeting yet but presumably the abatement will be a topic of discussion. Such actions have come under fire recently, most notably about the City Centre mixed-use project in April which provoked a fairly loud public opposition but was approved nonetheless.

TCIDA member Rich John, who voted in favor of the City Centre abatement, said t he request for an increase makes sense in light of the construction changes, and that if the project is finally built the benefits will eventually outweigh the costs. He emphasized his satisfaction that the historic Sage Block would be preserved and renovated.

“Overall, no project is perfect, but I think this would be a significant improvement to the Commons,” John said. “We’ve had that space empty or underutilized for years [...] The city continued on page 11

to a level that to me is just too excessive. I think you need to bring a level of reasonableness into the agency and that’s something that I think we need to do moving forward.”

Within this session of congress, Reed voted against the Stream Protection Rule (02/01) and in favor of restricting EPA studies (03/28) which were two recorded votes on environmental protection topics.

Reed earlier noted in that same press call that he would absolutely oppose a full defunding of the EPA. With that being noted, his voting record thus far does not show that he is a friend to them.

Is the U.S. seeing it’s alltime highest tax revenue?

To be precise, tax receipts peaked after Q3 of 2016, and have since fallen very minimally, but when viewing from a yearly data point, it’s still reasonable to conclude that U.S. tax revenue is at its all-time high.

he Dryden Town Board unanimously passed a resolution moving forward a 36-unit, six-building Planned Unit Development in Varna that would be aimed at Cornell University graduate students and families.

where it’s going or where it’s going to end up, but it is a transition. Part of the movement for Cayuga on the solar array is that it is our recognition markets are moving toward renewables and we embrace that, and want to be a part of that in the days and weeks ahead.”

There is no set timeline for the project to be completed, however RFPs (requests for proposals) were due on the project in April and some concepts – including a community aggregation program to sell energy directly to end users – might be pulled together in the future as more details are hashed out.

Though the project itself would feed into the energy grid current ly overseen by New York State Electric and Gas, the proposed solar farm signifies a small – but important – step to fulfilling the overall solar potential of Tompkins County.

In a 2012 planning department study, it was estimated the county could – at its fullest potential – generate up to 271 megawatts of power solely from solar power (or the equivalent of 298 million kilowatt hours), a large amount but still well short of the 323 megawatts provided by the Cayuga power plant. Though

The plan is for two-floor, threebedroom units with a covered back porch built into the structure and sidewalks throughout to create a “walkable community, sort of like a cul-de-sac.”

difficult to track exactly how much energy generated locally is used by Tompkins County residents due to the nature of the energy grid, the solar farm nonetheless represents a small proportion of the estimated 779.5 million kilowatt hours of energy used county-wide in 2008, the most recent estimate available. (though, as the largescale industrial development of Emerson Power Transmission closed in 2009, that number today is likely lower.)

Where the real significance of the announced project lies is in its potential for future commercial and utilities development on the site, setting Lansing up for a future that, while carrying on without coal, will still significantly rely heavily on energy production.

“Who knows in five or ten years what will happen here,” said Lansing’s Town Supervisor, Ed Lavigne. “This is a giant lab.

This is a time to see how much energy we can draw out of these things and what way we can do it.

This will be huge going forward as we try to partner with other transitional fuels. As you know, solar isn’t there by itself yet: this is a giant step forward. There are other transitional fuels we need to incorporate until we can get there. We did it with whale oil; we did it with kerosene; we’re going to do it with gas.”

Nonetheless, it’s hard to meet renewable energy goals without taking steps forward and, as far as the future sustainability both for the plant and Lansing’s tax base, the announcement comes as welcome news. Income through an in-progress policy proposal called RECS – renewable energy credits – will be a helpful boost to the site’s revenue on the way to the state’s 2030 energy goals, allowing for the offset of a decline in tax revenues on the plant. According to Jerry Goodenough, chief operating officer at the Cayuga power plant, the early documentation of this proposal calls for good site control, sufficient placement on the grid and sufficiently handled in the permitting process, traits Goodenough said he feel apply completely to the Lansing facility.

“We have a leg-up on the other projects in New York due to the fact we own this land, the zoning meets the needs of the project and we have a solid interconnection point,” said Goodenough. “We have an approved application and have been designated as a project ready to move forward. We fully understand our environmental obligations, and we have draft documents completed… we’ve had consultants with LaBella consult us with that… we’re ready for the next step.”

ith the area’s efforts to be more green in the future, transportation figures to be one of the main targets of such a movement, with programs like Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Way2Go aiming to educate the public and modify policies to ensure efficiency but also emphasize equality.

At last week ’s Tompkins County Planning, Developme nt a nd E nv i ron me nt a l Quality Committee meeting, officials from Cornell Cooperat ive E x tension gave a n update on a variety of projects being run through or in conjunction with the Way2Go program and its local partnerships. The Cooperative Extension was contracted in 2016 to attempt to design programs that could implement the suggested changes outlined in the Ithaca Tompkins Transportation Study.

The general goal of these programs is to expand access to transportation for those living in Tompkins County, educating the community about the options that are available to them which, it’s fairly likely the community may not be aware of.

Way2Go and Environment Team Administrator Dawn Montanye, who has been on t he job for t h ree mont hs , said their goals have revolved around trying to spread the word about things like ridesharing, the bus system, biking and walking, in advance of their more in-depth efforts which will most likely be coming as soon as later this summer.

“It’s more than information, it’s really to help develop very usable transportation options that are going to change people’s lives,” Montanye said.

“Our focus has really been on how do you match up people’s needs with the transportation options which a lot of people might not know are even present.”

eciding whether to categorize Pokeland, Ithaca’s new Hawaiian food restaurant, as “American” or “ethnic” goes beyond the pages of the “Food and Drink” section of the Summer Ithaca Issue.

It is innately a political statement on Hawaii, its history and involvement to mainland United States as well as a slap in the face to t he appropr i a t i o n o f ethnic foods for the purpose of profit in the U.S. The word “ethnic” and “ethnic background” trigger ideas of exclusion and cultural segregation because it is specifically used to categorize minorities. An ethnicity is supposed to describe belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition, but it only applies to people of color and is almost interchangeable with “exotic”

and connotes marginalization.

At the same time, the word “ethnic” can bring about a sense of pride, a sense of belonging to a certain group, tradition, and history. But why not call it culture, then?

The use of the word ethnic furthers a racial hierarchy because a person is only “e t h n ic” i f they are not a white American. The use of t he word et hnic puts whiteness and white culture — food included — in a higher category.

Hawaiian food is traditionally not American food, this is recognized. Hawaii was annexed, politically toyed with, militarized and colonized. Its annexation a testament to the US becoming a new imperial power. The decision to categorize it as American does not come with the idea of erasing this history, the context of and culture of Hawaii, but more so from a place

YourLetters Solar is good. So why fund nuclear?

T

o the Editor: Governor Cuomo’s announcement of a $1.5 billion initiative for renewable energy projects in New York State is a commendable move considering recent national actions on climate change, but it raises serious questions about his recent bailout of the nuclear industry.

If a $1.5 billion investment into the renewable industry will create 40,000 jobs in New York by 2020, as the Governor claims, why is he taxing ratepayers $7.6 billion to save 600 nuclear jobs? It doesn’t add up. On top of that, the nuclear plants will only supply energy to Upstate New Yorkers through 2029, falling a year short of his Clean Energy Standard (CES) goal.

was a reporter in Trumansburg for many years and attended a lot of public meetings there. I know that Trumansburgers are too polite to voice the kind of sentiments that Mr. Ocello asserts they have. But I lived in Trumansburg for 12 years and know that those kind of sentiments do exist there. However, I feel that they are not the primary obstacle to this development. Instead, residents are resisting an increase to the density of the vil-

The combination augmented his spirituality.

It was not a process of conversion.

The eastern philosophy he learned didn’t supplant his religious training.

It burnished his past and opened a present and future he could determine for himself.

He came back to school that fall and created a yoga and meditation class which was novice, not expert, but focused and real and keenly felt by us students.

The issue for me now is finding that kind of study again. But how? Back then, I saw what it had done for my teacher and simply signed up. I didn’t have to ask questions. But today, how do I find a practice that is not about lifestyle, but do-or-die living?

It’s a hard question to ask, or even formulate. But I remembered something I learned in a college journalism class (maybe the only thing I ever learned in a college journalism class).

It was about getting the right answer by asking the wrong question.

Anyone who lives in the proposed community could easily walk to the bus stop on Main Street, especially if the sidewalks in the village were restored or added. In my last years living the village I was aware of a proposal to bring social services to the Ulysses town hall to address exactly the concerns voiced above.

The ShurSave is taking part in a pilot program that uses an app called Rosie that has ShurSave employees doing your shopping and deli! vering your groceries. This was expected to be used mostly by seniors. In fact it is primarily used by busy mothers. It could easily be used by carless residents of the proposed development.

In other words, there is really nothing in the way of this development except the inherent conservatism of village residents.

I attended the recent planning board meeting and I did not hear

of a best-selling book and, as part of its market research, asked prospective viewers if they had read the book.

They expected about 20 percent to say yes, but over 90 percent did.

The researchers knew this couldn’t be true. Finally they realized that people said they read the book whether they had or not so as not to seem ignorant.

So the researchers changed the question. Instead they asked, do you intend the read the book? Then facesavers could say yes, while those who actually had would simply say so.

Similarly, if I ask prospective yoga teachers if rigorous spirituality is part of their practice, they will say yes.

So I have to contrive a false question to get the true answer.

Or maybe I have already, but not to give away here to Ithaca yoga teachers who might read this column and, forewarned, outfox me.

It’s funny how challenging resolutions can be, but I guess that’s how it is if one wants a “new you,” or renewal.

What I did hear from the developer is that they did not investigate any other sites either inside or outside the Village but like this site because they like to work with their development partner who purchased the land, that it had available utilities, and was in close proximity to services.

The sad fact is they did not consider what would be best for the eventual residents that will occupy this low income development. These folks will most likely find employment in Ithaca and require the healthcare support of Cayuga Medical Center, Tompkins County dept of social services, county mental health services, major retail, and daycare/recreational outlets such as the YMCA -- all in Ithaca about 12 miles away from this development. This proposed development is not on the TCAT bus line route and fitting a TCAT bus down either South St. or Pennsylvania Ave. would b! e downright dangerous. South Street is currently less than half the width (about 20’) of what is required in the Village code for a collector street, which requires 40’. I am sure you could agree that with a little more effort, a more appropriate site could be found to address Ithaca’s problem of affordable housing.

that if Hawaii is to be a part of the U.S., it should be recognized as such and not treated as a colony or annex.

The U.S. forgets about Hawaii sometimes, its history and the relationship between the islands and the mainland. The U.S. throws it away and forgets that it is a state, it undermines its power in the House and have made it into a tourist trap, mostly forgetting how crucial it was during World War II and the benefits Hawaii could bring to U.S.-Asian relations. It is the only part of the U.S. were an international war has been fought on, and like most forgotten veterans it has been left alone to deal with its history.

Hawaii is treated as an “other,” as a prize on a shelf, something to enjoy and this is exemplified by its labeling of food, culture and the overall dismissal of the islands remembered only by the military community and vacationers.

“If the U.S. is really to consider Hawaii as its 50th state, it must embrace its history, its culture, and its people without appropriating, marginalizing or discarding them.”

Categorizing Hawaiian food as American is not to diminish its cultural difference or concrete its colonization; it is more so for the U.S. to stop treating Hawaii as an annex and begin treating it as a state and respected as an equal. If the U.S. is really to consider Hawaii as its 50th state, it must embrace its history, its culture, and its people without appropriating, marginalizing or discarding them.

The decision comes from a place of wanting Hawaii to be better recognized by mainland U.S. and not in the form of an “ethnic” and “exotic” location, but as part of U.S. imperial history and blatant disregard of minority populations, especially those of indigenous or Asian-Pacific descent.

But to speak for the Hawaiian people would be wrong, so this is just a take on the situation. Whether the Hawaiian people want to separate, have a true seat at the table instead symbolic one the, U.S. has to recognize it is imperial past and take responsibility for it as well. Hawaii’s marginalization is no because of its distance or population, it is because of its race and its forgotten history.

To be sure, I went over there for lunch and asked. The owners prefer it to be considered ethnic food.

Mr. Schumer as well was off of Capitol Hill here’s his input on the withdraw from the accord: ““The idea of searching for a new deal is a fig leaf. If you truly believe in improving the Paris Agreement, you don’t back out -- you work with our allies and partners around the world.”

Trump announced that the United States would be pulling from its leadership role in the Paris Accord – a non-binding commitment by nearly 200 countries to begin actively combatting climate change starting in the year 2020 – stating such an initiative would hurt American workers, costing America as much as 2.7 million lost jobs by 2025 according to the federally-funded National Economic Research Associates.

Though coal and natural gas still produce a significant (but declining) proportion of the nation’s energy, the Traditional Energy and Energy Efficiency sectors – which employ 6.4 million Americans – increased in 2016 by just under 5 percent, adding over 300,000 net new jobs according to figures from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Of all the sectors covered in that category, from motor vehicle production to efficiency engineering, only one sector declined: fuels, which according to a January report from the Department of Energy declined by 8 percent. Today, just under 374,000 people are employed in solar energy (including jobs related to the construction of solar facilities), according to the report, while coal, gas and oil power generation had a workforce of approximately 187,000 across all three sectors.

In Tompkins County, this effort to capitalize on a growing renewables sector has toed the line of the cutting edge, the county’s overall renewable energy use increasing more than 136 percent between 2008 and 2014. Lobbying from groups like Sustainable Tompkins, Solarize Tompkins and Cornell Cooperative Extension have pushed for divestments of fossil fuel use in new development county-wide. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority has pinpointed the county as a testing ground for a conceptual “Smart Grid,” a sort of model for the energy grid of the future. And on Planning Board agendas from Newfield to Dryden, solar projects have been popping up as discussion items almost every month.

Supporters of renewable energy as well as critics agree: things are moving fast in Tompkins County. But, oftentimes, the economics are unclear and the politics – whether by an aversion to change or con-

flict with the financing – prove difficult to overcome.

W here Does Tompkins Cou nt y Get Its En ergy?

To understand the politics and economics of Tompkins County’s move to renewable energy, one first needs to understand where the supply for the county’s overall energy consumption comes from.

In 2016, the Tompkins County Legislature accepted the planning department’s “Energy Roadmap,” a comprehensive guide to not only where the county gets its energy, but an outline of its energy consumption and the setting of goals to reduce overall greenhouse gas production. Outlining several scenarios of the impacts of various changes in our energy consumption on the environment, the Energy Roadmap offers a snapshot of local energy consumption and where we could reduce – or replace – our energy consumption with renewable sources.

Like most communities across the United States, Tompkins County still relies heavily on a broad suite of energy sources. In 2008, the year the most recent data was compiled, 29 percent of all electricity used in Tompkins County came from nuclear energy, 29 percent from hydroelectric, a little more than 30 percent from oil and natural gas and 5.5 percent from peak time coal power produced in Lansing.

However, times are changing. Last year, the state’s Public Service Commission shot down a proposal by the Lansing plant to convert to natural gas, leading to its eventual shutdown, and as the county’s population has increased, activists have called for alternative means beyond the expansion of natural gas, such as what the proposed West Dryden Pipeline would bring, to meet rising energy demands.

Historically, the energy grid as a whole has consistently been a one-way street, a system based on the relationship from power plant to a mediator – like NYSEG – to the consumer. But as innovation – and public opinion – moves the state from natural gas and nuclear energy to the more diverse portfolio of renewables. This is happening to some degree as more and more homes inevitably go to solar (1,261 in Tompkins

County since the year 2000 according to NYSERDA) but, with limited room to rely on renewables such as wind and solar – especially in the unpredictable weather of upstate New York – more hydroelectric and nuclear power may need to be relied on to take on the baseload of the state’s energy demand as renewable energy sources seek to be the replacement for coal and natural gas.

Beating Natu r a l Gas

Because most utilities providers are privately owned businesses, the question of profitability and feasibility for the developer comes up in every project. And like fracking helped lead to the demise of the coal industry, innovation – and incentive – will lead to more industry hopping onto the renewables bandwagon. At a time where many states have set ambitious sustainability goals and natural gas is cheaper than it’s ever been, making renewable energy the common sense solution to meeting our energy needs, whether by artificially lowering the cost of construction or by streamlining the approval process, is key.

There has been speculation, however, that a changeover that happens too quickly – through regulating one’s way to sustainable technologies – can actually undermine natural gas as a transitional energy source, leading to higher utilities costs.

“The United States has a huge energyprice advantage over many of its competitors,” the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said in a statement to the Congressional Committee on Science, Space and Technology in February 2016. “The uneven nature of the emissions goals [favoring renewables over resources like natural gas], however, could raise U.S. energy prices.”

Fortunately in New York, recent years have been especially kind to solar energy, helping to make renewables a significantly more affordable option than as recently as five years ago. play a major role in a small town’s perception of a project, be it a solar array or a wind farm.

Solar is, first and foremost, something meant to be democratized, an energy source largely spread across the rooftops of homes and businesses across the county where, before, only a small area would be affected by the presence of a power plant.

“The impact of energy production used to be very localized, only if you lived next to a power plant or a coal mine,” said Woodcock. “These were the things that once, only the poor had to cope with. Now, everyone has to. It’s much more democratized.”

Unfortunately, this small-scale, spread out approach on its own is not sufficient to meet the county’s green energy goals: to some degree, you need major development with experienced developers building on the limited real estate feasible for any sort of project of scale. To make these work, there needs to be compromise between town officials and residents, a willingness to accept a solar development in a place where solar energy can be produced most efficiently: well-situated, on the grid and close to customers, all while being large enough to be profitable.

“We need to be able to large enough facilities (in order to have community solar) to make them financially feasible,” Eden said. “You just can’t put up a tiny solar array and be able to pay for it. You have to be willing to accept the changing landscape.”

But suitable development also requires willing lessees, power lines to support the project once constructed and proximity to a substation for transmitting, not to mention upgrades to the grid the company – not NYSEG – is liable to pay for. Essentially, it’s a pay to play type of investment. And at some point, it becomes cost-prohibitive.

“On one hand it’s good, because NYSEG customers won’t have to pay to upgrade the grid,” said Jason Leifer, supervisor for the Town of Dryden which, recently, has been embroiled in a fight over subsidizing a large solar farm that would impact the sightlines of the local landscape. “But on the other hand, it seems like critics are doing whatever they can to make it so these solar projects can’t happen. So when you have people who are anti-gas coming out against solar because they don’t think it looks nice… they’re not doing anything to actually help matters.”

Because the county has no land use authority, most of the local level initiatives fall in the hands of towns like Dryden, which

can dictate the zoning for a site and conduct site plan reviews. To stop the project, whether as a whole or to get a better deal, residents have called for solar moratoriums and butted heads with the Industrial Development Agency – which crafts the PILOT agreements for solar projects – in order to further assess the deal and try and take in more tax dollars for Dryden: profit margins of the solar companies be damned.

While localities can control the terms a solar company can build under, what can’t be controlled is a developer’s willingness to build here and, if moved, could bring their tax dollars elsewhere. This is where the sweeteners and the dealmaking come in, since the county has made it clear where it stands on energy use: cleaner is better.

Solar financials often show most products are close to the edge and, with a low rate of return, often need financial incentives to be able to get online. But it’s a philosophical battle, one of hearts and minds.

The biggest thing for the industry themselves is to educate residents on how the grid works, to normalize the idea of democratized energy production as something we all need to interact with, rather than a select few in the shadow of a power plant.

“It’s a lot of change and a lot of new development all at once that touches on a lot of things,” Culotta said. “It would be nice if rather than pointing fingers, people said ‘wow, we have a lot to learn.’ This is moving quickly, it’s a little tense, it makes us anxious and we want to make the right decisions. None of them are easy decisions. So how can we learn, how can we actively talk this out? I do think at the county level, that’s been the prevailing approach, but there’s not necessarily a good bridge between ordinary citizens and the process at the planning and legislative level.”

At the end of the day, said the City and Town’s sustainability coordinator Nick Goldsmith, the solar debate stands as a juncture of a county’s priorities.

“Energy demands are always going up, and we need to get onto renewables as quickly as possible,” he said. I’d say the hardest part is moving forward, but also focusing on the biggest thing, which is efficiency. The cheapest unit of energy available is the one you don’t have to produce, and one of the key things we can do right now is simply to use less energy, not just getting it from renewables. That is always going to be key.”

Some of the transportation challenges that face Tompkins County are a result of the area itself-- its geographical spread, which leads to quite a bit of rural country, simply makes it more difficult to equalize access to all kinds of services while there are economic barriers to coming closer to places like downtown Ithaca, where the cost of living is substantially higher but there is also a much easier access to most services.

The population boom among older adults in the area is another interesting dynamic that has arisen in the transportation efforts.

Since many of them are no longer driving, they make up a decent sized chunk of the people who are in need of education about the transportation services being offered around the area. Sophie Somerfeldt, an education coordinator for Way2Go, said some of their work has also centered around familiarizing people with things like the TCAT bus system; nearly everybody knows there’s a bus system, but if they don’t actually know how to use it they might end up avoiding it entirely.

“Basically we have a transportation system developed that tends to favor people driving their own car,” Somerfeldt said. “For most of transportation access and equity issues as well as environmental sustainability, looking at the long term, that system doesn’t work very well for lots of people. So we try to help people make the best of existing transportation systems.”

Montanye said they have served as consultants, in a way, for instance if a company has run into parking issues due to one of the many construction projects in the area. If they want to design a rideshare program among their employees to conserve space, they may contact Way2Go, who would show them how that might operate most effectively.

Move Together New York is another, widerranging initiative from Way2Go that extends its mobility education program, though instead of most of the other previously mentioned efforts this involves several counties from the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier, and could grow to include others. ith Tompkins County Legislator Carol Chock’s decision to not seek re-election, the Third District will elect a new face to the post for the first time in 10 years.

David Shapiro, the President and CEO of Family and Children’s Services (FCS) and a Belle Sherman resident, announced last month his intention to be that new face, running as a Democrat and armed with a compassion-centric campaign message. He is currently slated to face fellow political newcomers Henry Granison and Carolina Osorio Gil in the District 3 election.

Many county legislature candidates have declared themselves over the last several weeks and months, the majority of which have said the current political climate nationally has invigorated their own governmental aspirations; Shapiro, for example, was particularly moved by seeing Bernie Sanders’ speech announcing his presidential candidacy. But Shapiro said his campaign has been on his mind for several years, even before moving to Ithaca from New York City. He knew when he moved to a smaller place he would want to get involved in the community and the opportunity would be more readily available.

“There’s a lot of interest in being engaged right now, which is such a great thing,” he said. “I think I’m a little unique in that I’ve been planning for this for a while, I’ve been, in a lot of respects, train-

Shapiro’s entrance into his profession wasn’t merely happenstance. His professional life to this point has been fueled in large part by his relationship with his grandfather Solomon, a Holocaust survivor. Years of hearing his grandfather talk about his experiences during World War II inspired Shapiro, particularly that Solomon did not allow the horrors he saw around him to destroy his steadfast belief that “not all people were bad,” as Shapiro puts it. Shapiro’s voice shakes recounting the sheer miracle of his grandfather’s survival, let alone his ability to maintain his faith in humanity as a whole.

“I feel like I owe it to give back to the community, I enjoy the work that I do -- but I also don’t feel like I have a lot of choice in doing it,” he said. “It feels like it is the calling that I have, and it’s the way that I want to pay back my grandfather’s life being saved.”

Make no mistake, Shapiro’s already given one thing to the community: hours and hours of commute time between Brooklyn and Ithaca during the his first year and a half here. If that didn’t force him away, he said, nothing will.

“Tell you what, you want to fall in love with a community, do that trip for 18 months,” he recounts with a laugh. “By the time you’re finished, you either fall in love or you just give up somewhere in between the two.”

The election for the District 3 seat will take place on November 7. Granison and Shapiro are both Democrats.

Filling In Where Healthcare Falls Short

A

lthough the threat of 23 million uninsured people in the United States has put the healthcare debate suddenly back in the forefront, a percentage of people have had to wrangle between healthcare and everyday living for years.

The Ithaca Free Clinic has been helping regular folk who have found themselves in limbo — those who make too much for Medicaid but too little for Medicare, the suddenly unemployed, undocumented migrants, those in the service industry — for a little over a decade.

What makes the clinic different than other healthcare centers is its emphasis on alternative approaches to medicine. Instead of using narcotics as pain relievers — a decision made since the clinic’s inception as an answer to the opioid epidemic — the clinic uses acupuncture, herbalism, massage and occupational therapy as well as chiropractic care to treat patients.

“The founders wanted to find a way to provide healthcare for those in need and to also provide what they called integrated or complementary health services where these multiple modalities would learn to work together,” explained Norbert McClosky, executive director of the clinic. “What has grown out of that is a multiple-modality non-narcotic pain management model.” It’s one of the few clinics in the US who does this.

Their approach to healthcare is also an overarching experience of not only providing medical assistance in the form of both conventional care and holistic care but to also provide financial services, facilitated enrollment into insurance programs, sometimes even couples counseling.

Once a patient walks in, they see a primary care practitioner first. After this, the doctor works with the other practitioners in the clinic to decide on what the patient needs.

“A lot of the time, depending on the provider, they will consult with, for example, the herbalist about what would be an additional treatment for the patient, so they tend to work together,” Luz Rivera, the Clinic Coordinator, said.

Through research the clinic has done, they’ve found that they can treat a number of conditions without the use of narcotics.

McClosky added that “in some cases, the alternative approach is as effective — and in some cases more effective — than traditional pain management regimes that use narcotics.”

Although the clinic has been working with a mixed-modality structure since the beginning, finding the balance between conventional medicine holistic care to make

it a truly integrative experience has been an intricate process because there is still not a complete understanding of the benefits and consequences of all the practices utilized by the clinic.

Last year, the clinic took the next step in bridging that gap by launching the Chronic Care program, which provides long-term services to individuals with chronic conditions who would otherwise not be able to afford it.

“It is a way to help [the patients] to learn to help manage their chronic condition to increase the quality of their life. Lower the amount of medication that they have to take, manage that condition so that it is not managing them,” McClosky said.

You have to understand all the modalities to really do that,” he said.

Song also explained that a lot of the time there simply is no time to sit down and understand the varied effects of different methods such as acupuncture and herbalism because these practices fall on a scale, and every practitioner uses different methods within the same practice. For example, Song is a herbalist who followed

a more scientific method whereas other practitioners follow a more spiritual path to their medicine. This makes the process more convoluted because of a lot of the time there it is hard to pin down what aspects of what practice can aid a patient.

Another barrier has been that the patients themselves are so different.

“We have a lot of patients with numerous health issues. It’s the classic American problem: mental health issues, cardiovascular issues, diabetes, etc. Many people are treated by bunch of us, so how do we all work together to treat them and their different conditions,” Song said.

The Program has been able to provide free kidney screening with the support of Cornell University as well as the Northeast Kidney Foundation and is seeking to be able to give even more resources back to the community with the help of volunteers and donations.

Winning Never Gets Old

ome college students have been finished with classes for 3 or 4 weeks, and have settled into their summer routines. The rowers and coxswain that make up the Cornell men’s lightweight varsity eight have yet to call it a year, as they just returned from California, where on Sunday they capped their undefeated season by winning their

third national championship in 4 years.

I caught up with head coach Chris Kerber on Monday, and I pointed out that as if being a student athlete at an Ivy League university wasn’t challenging enough, training to compete at the highest level while juggling final exams, graduation and the rest of the year-end chaos must make it even more difficult.

“We have to navigate through these things all through the year,” Kerber told me. “We have finals in May, some rowers have the full experience of graduation – meaning spending time with their visiting families in addition to training – and we just figure out what works in making what we have created just a little bit better.”

Coach Kerber has an idea what it takes, as he rowed at Temple University, graduating in 1990. He kept his eye on t he prize a nd kept t ra ining for the opportunity to make the U.S. national team, and he did so in 1993 and remained on the team for 7 seasons. He helped his crew win two World Championships, and won numerous medals at the Henley Royal Regatta, the Pan-

From here, the crew will keep training hard in preparation for the Henleys, held in England at the end of June. “It’s a bigger stage,” Kerber offered. “It’s a grand event.”

After that, the rowers will take some time off, then in late August, they’ll be back in the boat. “That,” Kerber said, “is what makes rowers different.” *** Local fans are aware that Ithaca College’s athletic teams are very widely respected, but two recent awards give a glimpse into just how far and wide that sustained excellence reaches.

Bomber varsity teams won 11 conference championships during the 2016-17 academic year. In the fall, Ithaca won five conference titles, leaving them in first place with 62 points following the fall season. The Bombers added four conference championships during the winter season, and they picked up two E8 titles in baseball and women’s outdoor track and field during the spring season.

That excellence spilled over far beyond the Empire 8, as Ithaca finished 10th out of 325 Division III colleges in the Learfield Sports Directors Cup. The Cup is based on a school’s finish in nine men’s and nine women’s sports, the Bombers’ top 10 finish is their highest since 200203. Ithaca is one of only seven schools to finish in the top-30 every year since the Cup was started in 1995-96. The Bombers were in 44th place after the fall season, jumped up to 18th after the winter season, and in the spring – lead by the women’s track and field team’s 2nd place finish at the NCAA’s, vaulted into the top 10.

Local author pens brainy suspence novel

by Bill Chaisson But Dolan-Leach manages to combine these kinds of tricks with a relatively straightforward mystery plot that draws along the reader not at all interested in constraints on composition. Local readers will enjoy Ava’s visits to Watkins Glen, Kuma’s Charmers, and Two Goats brewery, and Seneca Lake is a not altogether benign presence in the story. Anyone familiar with the wine industry and the demographics of Schuyler County will recognize the pervasive tension between long-time residents and newcomers.

Dolan-Leach’s primary interest is psychological though, not sociological, so the focus stays on the dysfunctional relationships among the Antipova clan. Anyone hoping to get an inside look at the wine community will have to look elsewhere. The author thanks Katie Ko-

ead Letters, the debut novel by Caite Dolan-Leach, manages to combine elements of a suspense novel with the gravity of literary fiction to tell a story that is funny, sad, and clever.

Since its release in February it has been selected as a Book-of-the-Month, reviewed favorably by the New York Times, and has been a topic on many a literary blog in both the U.S. and the U.K. Dolan-Leach is a 2005 graduate of Charles O. Dickerson High School in Trumansburg. She went off to Trinity College, Dublin (Ireland, not Ohio) and then on to Paris to attend the American University in Paris, where she still lives and makes her living as a translator of French literature. Her mother Peggy Dolan taught for many years at Belle Sherman Elementary School. Her father Mike Leach owned Ithaca Stoveworks.

In her acknowledgements at the end of Dead Letters, Dolan-Leach thanks her sister Emily for believing her when she told her that the novel was not about their own family. Dead Letters focuses on the relationship between twin sisters Ava and Zelda, who are the offspring of divorced parents who established a winery in the Finger Lakes. As the novel opens Ava is en route back to Ithaca from Paris because she has received an

email from her mother that informs her that her sister has apparently died in a barn fire. Her father picks her up at the airport, having returned from his second marriage and new winery in Napa to attend Zelda’s funeral. This sets in motion an elaborate cat-and-mouse game during which Ava receives riddle-laden electronic and handwritten messages from the possibly not-expired Zelda. Apparently as far apart as A and Z at the novel’s beginning, chapter by chapter DolanLeach brings the identical twins together like stereoscopic images slowly coming into focus.

Ava has been studying the OuLiPo writers in her Paris post-graduate work, and in Dead Letters Dolan-Leach deploys some of the techniques of this school. OuLiPo stands for Ouvroir de littérature potentielle or “the workshop of potential literature.” Founded in 1960, they believed that applying constraints to composition would trigger new ideas. Some works entirely exclude certain letters (lipograms). Others replace a letter with the one seven places after it in the alphabetical order (… + 7). Dead Letters consists of 26 chapters; the first letter of each chapter is a different letter of the alphabet, presented in order.

Fans of OuLiPo can enjoy themselves looking for more constraints throughout the novel.

ne day about 25 years ago, Kate D. Mahoney woke up, and people started calling her a miracle. It wasn’t undeserved, but that’s a weighty title to apply to someone.

And yet after all this time, she still seems more comfortable with the first half of her Misfit Miracle Girl moniker than the latter.

Mahoney now lives in Syracuse, though her ancestral Ithaca roots are strong. One of her great grandfathers founded the Ithaca Meat Market, and her great grandparents sold land to Ithaca College. As part of a wide-ranging tour, Mahoney will be holding a book-signing event on Saturday, June 10, at the Barnes at 2 p.m., welcoming community members to come out and enjoy a homecoming as Mahoney shares material from her debut book.

Mahoney’s book, The Misfit Miracle Girl: Candid Reflections, has been named an Amazon.com Best Selling Book. It’s a mix of humorous anecdotes, poignant memoirs and advice from someone who has seen more than their fair share of highs and lows. As she speaks, Mahoney seems

eminently grounded, convinced her voice can help, but only if others ask for it first.

“The messages in the book are things people need to be reminded of,” Mahoney said. “I don’t know that I feel so particularly arrogant that I think they need to hear exactly what I say and take it to be their fact.

At 35, the decision to write a book was partially the desire to help others who may have faced some of the challenges Mahoney had as well, and frankly, she says, partially it was out of survival. After having spent many years as a family caregiver, she had reached a dead end of sorts.

The crux of her story begins in the summer of 1992, when Mahoney was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer at the age of 14 while vacationing with her family in Central New York. She spent 46 days in Crouse Hospital in Syracuse suffering from multiple organ failures after chemotherapy wasn’t having an effect. With hope nearly gone, the family was approached by a local nun who had been working on the canonization case of Mother Marianne Cope, who also worked partially in Central New York. After praying for Mother Cope’s

intervention in Mahoney’s health, her condition improved drastically and she was released from the hospital with a note that said her turnaround “Could not be explained medically.”

Mahoney’s case was used as evidence of a miracle by Mother Cope, two of which are necessary for consideration to sainthood. In 2012, Cope was canonized after another Central New York miracle emerged, officially taking the title of Saint Marianne, Mother of Outcasts.

While the book is light-hearted in general, Mahoney’s story has profoundly trying moments, and she admits there are parts of the story she might’ve preferred not to relive, though these parts are ultimately still important for the reader to understand and feel ­­— such as when Mahoney learned both her parents had been diagnosed with cancer within 10 days of one another.

“Having to really, out of respect for the story, reconnect with those emotions was incredibly painful,” she said. “But I found almost every time I tried to read those out loud I couldn’t get through it without choking up and crying.”

The book was partly motivated for practical reasons for Mahoney as well.

Several years ago she returned to Syracuse to care for her ailing parents, which meant

both incredibly fun and daunting. Having just finished a draft of some creative work, I find myself craving the gritty work of translation, and I have no doubt that after translating something, I’ll be desperate for the freedom of my own fictions.

IT: Where did you get the idea for the alphabet games? Did it inspire making the sisters twins and their names?

CD-L: I’ll confess that I didn’t really figure out what was going on with the alphabet games until just before Ava does, not quite halfway through the manuscript.

So in a sense it’s really the other way around–the twins’ names and their family mythology ended up driving the alphabetical clues that Zelda has devised.

IT: Each chapter starts with the relevant letter of the alphabet and there are 26 chapters. This kind of conceptual playfulness seems sort of ... French. Are you invoking a particular school of writing here?

CD-L: Good eye! Indeed, this a modest riff on the OuLiPo movement, who play around with the alphabet in much more serious and creative ways than I do. Ava is also studying these French writers as part of her graduate degree. There are a few OuLiPo inspired games throughout the book, not least of which are the 26 pangrams–26 sentences that contain all twenty-six letters of the alphabet.

IT: Ava slowly reveals her true character over the course of the book; she seems to trust the reader more and become more candid. In the end she seems a lot more like

Zelda than she did at the start. What is the significance of this evolution?

CD-L: Ava does a lot sliding over the course of the book; she comes home certain that she understands everything—herself, her sister’s machinations, her family—and over the course of three hundred-plus pages all of that certainty is eroded.

Zelda, who has never left [home], undergoes the same chipping away of identity, and her elaborate game ultimately becomes a way for Ava to understand herself better: Zelda forces her sister to change and evolve by destroying many of Ava’s self-imposed boundaries.

IT: Zelda’s presence in the book is entirely electronic and by proxy (and yet by the end you are convinced you know her).

This is essential to the plot, but did you want to make a wider point about communication between people in our era?

CD-L: I think there probably is a point to be made, but I was particularly interested in what death looks like in our technological age; someone who is presumed dead can continue to technologically haunt you, because digital media in some ways keeps you alive. Zelda is offstage (or exclusively onscreen, I guess) for the entire novel, but her presence is still felt, and she’s able to act and manipulate people in some sense from beyond the grave because of digital technology.

IT: Ava and Zelda seem to have been endlessly cruel to each other and get they remained tight until their fallout over

Lakes, as developed but not as renowned or successful as Napa, exist in a weird tension between sophistication and podunk, an emotional conflict that Ava lives out: an Ivy League degree, but in farming and a dual life between Paris and the countryside. And the lake is obviously important for a few plot developments. The Antipovas are both profligate and rooted, and their badly-run vineyard is exactly that sort of enterprise.

There are also some allusions that tie in with the Greek names that abound in this area that are too pedantic to really go into.

IT: “Pova” turns out to be Esperanto (!) for “power”. Why “anti-power” as a surname for this family?

CD-L: I had no idea! So it’s a coincidence, I guess.

IT: How does being a translator inform your writing?

CD-L: Translating is a really different process to creative writing; while translation is filled with difficult choices, you’re always working within a finished text, and the really big decisions have been made for you. So translating is technically demanding, but doesn’t offer you the freedom to just explore and wander. When you’re writing fiction, you literally get to make every single decision yourself, and go down any old rabbit-hole that looks appealing. This is 16

leaving her job in Chicago. As time passed, she realized she was adding more time away from professional work to her resume that might be difficult to make up, and once her father passed away and mother had recovered to a certain extent, she had a decision to make: she could try and restart her life and career after several years out of commission, or she could take a sizable risk and try to tell the story of the Miracle Misfit Girl.

Having written a string of monologues about her early life experiences while in college, Mahoney knew how to articulate her story and she was familiar with writing for stage, so she began experimenting with that form of storytelling.

But her first book required something different, to be able to communicate her story while walking the fine line between preaching her faith at readers while still providing the fullest possible self-portrait.

Now, five months after the book’s release, it has been effusively praised by critics and readers alike, drawing rave reviews even in the notoriously vicious online comment sections.

“I felt that this was not a Catholic story,” Mahoney said. “I believe there’s a universal resonance for any reader who would choose to pick this book up.” •

Wyatt. Is this a comment on the nature of relationships between sisters, women in general? This story doesn’t seem it would work at all if it was about two brothers.

CD-L: Yes, I definitely agree–a male relationship just wouldn’t be quite as… weird.

I think sister relationships, and female relationships more generally are endlessly complex–just look at how Ferrante’s Neapolitan books have resonated with people.

Because Dead Letters is really the story of one central relationship, that relationship needs to be filled with tension, love, frustration, competition, closeness, etc.

IT: What is the significance of Ava’s poor relationships with both food and alcohol?

CD-L: Ava has a lot of control issues.

And Zelda’s game requires Ava to give up her sense of control, and hopefully, heal.

IT: Garden-variety readers/critics often complain that “there is no one likable” in a book. The Antipovas meet this description, but Wyatt and his hippie parents seem both principled and forgiving (although the parents are a bit dissolute). Is this a culture vs. counterculture comment and/or something else?

CD-L: The “likability problem” really irks me. I feel like the demand for likable characters is really only directed towards female authors and female characters. There’s an expectation that women need to be likable in order to be worth investigating.

Frankly, I’m just not terribly interested in likable characters–they’re boring. •

Swirling Through the Galaxy New art collection on display at Press Cafe

A

rtist Elizabeth McMahon keeps a notebook — the sort of notebook that captures bursts of inspiration along with the randomness of human consciousness. Lists, charts, graphics and snippets of sentences litter the pages, some splattered in crayon and others in pen.

It’s these notes that inspired her latest collection, “Cosmic Metro,” currently on display in Ithaca’s Press Cafe. The collection also draws on inspirations from the chaoticness of subway stations and the overwhelmingness of outer space — “Cosmic Metro.”

“It’s almost like sensory overload, and I’m trying to kind of block down some of this information,” McMahon said. “I like so much of it, but I have to block out some of the information. The [paintings] aren’t as busy as my other work, and I think people can kind of read them a little better.”

Each work is a combination of tape, charcoal, paint, pencil and ink. At first glance, the combinations of media feel

random, but on further inspection, they still feel random, but with a purpose. Polka dots, stripes, mathematical equations and splatters swirl around the paintings and form a different story for each viewer.

Some of the patterns come together into different shapes, a predominant shape being the bowtie. Cutouts form in the shape of triangles, collections of tape and charcoal contort into bows, and polka dots follow a similar shape.

McMahon’s background in fashion design bleeds into “Cosmic Metro,” notably in the bowties. After attending Parsons School of Design for fashion design and painting in the ’70s, her love for fashion and artwork never left her. This passion appears in her collection, drawing on bits of what she loves in subtle patterns.

The New York City in her hasn’t left either. Each work is bold and mirrors the disarray of the city, notably the subway patterns. Tape tracks flow into what look like blueprints, and charcoal dustings leave behind traces — messy footprints.

“So much of it is unconscious,” McMahon said.

“There’s some suggestions of patterns, and there’s motion.

All my cutouts have all this activity, and I like that and I like seeing what came underneath and shows out.”

Another theme in “Cosmic Metro” comes from the idea of playfulness. After completing her undergraduate education and beginning a family, McMahon found a new way to express herself. She became known as Mrs. McPuppet, a traveling puppeteer in the Central New York area. She performed for school children, telling stories and singing original songs with her puppets.

“The idea of play is key,” she said. “I think that is my thread through my work as Mrs. McPuppet and I think it’s crucial in how I get where I want, and that [my work] does have to have a sense of playfulness.”

These new works are undeniably playful and curious.

“Cosmic Metro” is but one collection in McMahon’s body of works. Each of her collections work together as a string of stories that tackle curiosity and coping with endless information. Taking Flight

Psychedelic band moves in smooth patterns

M

aybird drift along the interstellar corridor in colors lush and serene.

The Brooklyn by way of Rochester quartet is both a throwback and a futuristic wave, their sound claiming a softness that lets you get real close before opening you up to an infinite psychedelic pattern, bridging the moist with the edgy. Haunting echoes define each Maybird track, and the songwriting is sneakily dense. There’s something really deep here, something obscure but totally solid. A juxtaposition that is absolutely true.

“For some tunes, like “Maybird” for instance, there’s very much a song section and a hazy noise section,” noted singer and guitarist Josh Netsky. “Which I think compliment each other just as much as juxtapose.

On a tune like “Looking Back,” the noise is building throughout underneath the song, so they’re more of a combined presence.

I find it really effective when I hear music that has that kind of texture. It gives you something more to react to than the music and lyrics, without overpowering either.”

Maybird do indeed catch you with something extra. The band soars with its looseness and originality, and reverberates perpetually with a special hidden magic.

They get out there in terms of dexterity, but always manage to keep you close with their strong sense of composition totality; a trait reminiscent of bands like The Beatles,

The Beach Boys and contemporary groups like White Denim and The Flaming Lips.

Maybird’s a trip, and they’re heading to The Haunt this Friday to expand your infinite mind. The Times caught up with the full band last week: here’s the lowdown.

Ithaca Times: How did you guys meet, and what did you initially bond over, artistically and socially?

Kurt Johnson (guitar, backup vocals): We serendipitously came together through the ever growing and changing Rochester musical web. I can personally say that being in this band has introduced me to some of my favorite music today, but the things we bond over often go beyond the music: stuff like skateboarding, Rick and Morty, the forest, Twin Peaks, Tim and Eric, pictures of cats, record shopping on the road; the list goes on, in fact, this makes me realize, if anyone of us took out a personal ad looking for a date, I’m sure one of the other band mates would be the first to respond.

IT: Is there a visual narrative you guys are trying to convey with your music, in terms of totality?

Adam Netsky (drums): We have experimented with visual narratives for a lot of our songs, making music videos over the years, having our friends make artwork, etc.; but different songs tend to bring out different stories or images, so I’m not sure there is one consistent overarching visual narrative. Each new batch of songs brings new textures and visual ideas.

IT: You guys are drawing from varying

musical forms, but are completely doing your own thing: are there particular aesthetic sensibilities from the past that are really inspiring or influential to your approach?

Sam Snyder (guitar, backup vocalist): I don’t think we’re too shy about experimenting, we all dig a lot of types of music, and a common thread I’ve noticed is an affection for good songs with little twists and turns that keep them interesting.

IT: There’s a lot of freedom to your sound when you guys go off into psychedelic hazes, is it important to juxtapose that freedom against something rigid and structured?

SS: I think juxtaposition is an important form in music. It keeps things fresh to have a little familiarity with a little dissonance or whatever you want to call it. “Psychedelic music” I’d say is basically based on that vision, which is why it’s maybe easy for us to fit into that term, but I don’t think we’re afraid to break away from it when the song requires different attentions

IT: What inspires you guys on a day to day basis, and what does community mean to you: do you feel you have a string one in Brooklyn?

AN: I don’t know if I could pin our community down to one location whether it’s Brooklyn or Rochester. With touring, the internet and us all having lived and worked in several different locations, it feels more like several intersecting communities.

Still, I think these bonds are really important. Its great to show up to a gig and know you will see your friends and that there is a community there that kind of has your back.

IT: What was the process like behind the song “Keep in Line” and is a new record on its way?

JN: “Keep in Line” began as a moody synth tune I recorded in my bedroom the first year I lived in Brooklyn. You can hear construction vehicles from the rooftop of where I lived, and one night I was hanging out up there and decided to record this one pattern I was hearing. I based the tune off of that sound musically. That was also the first song we worked on with Patrick Carney in the producer role, and he brought a lot of energy into it—the tune was originally a lot slower. A new EP is on the way with four tracks, including “Keep in Line”.

It should be out late June.

IT: Have you guys been inspired or deeply disturbed by the last few months in political and social stratosphere, and does your music have any investment in politics and philosophy?

AN: I have definitely felt a mixture of deep disturbance and inspiration. I don’t think the songs are political in the sense of the “protest song,” but I really believe that any music expressing existential vulnerability, be it loneliness, alienation or heartbreak, can be political in maybe more subtle ways. It helps people to relate to one another, to feel some kind of deep solidarity in a public forum. Maybe music and art can be a benefit to political and social movements in this way. •

Firsts for DC and Captain Underpants

T

he superhero genre is undergoing gold rush fever right now, but it’s mostly been a sausage party. My Facebook friends and I could only come up with a few female-driven comic movies: Supergirl (1984), Red Sonja (1985), Witchboard (1986), Tank Girl (1995), Barb Wire (1996) and Elektra (2005).

Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman isn’t just the highest-grossing opener for a female-directed movie, but it’s also a rip-roaring, fun and touching adventure.

Everything that Zack Snyder’s Batman v.

Superman: Dawn of Justice got completely wrong, Wonder Woman gets resoundingly right. To be fair, Wonder Woman did have her own TV series in the ’70s, a 2009 DC animated feature and two great seasons of the animated Justice League, but the sheer scale and size of the new film is truly impressive.

ages to work out her origin story on the female-only island of Themyscira, introduce stranded spy pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) as a love interest and this sends her on her first outing into the real world to help Trevor fight in WWI. So as a bonus of sorts, we get two fish-outwater stories: Trevor is utterly out of place in her world, and she’s utterly out of place in his world. Pine knows comedy, but Gadot reveals a sweet light touch as Wonder Woman (disguised as Diana Prince) discovers 20th century items like women’s clothing and the taste of ice cream.

I don’t want to spoil the rest of the story. This is a great popcorn entertainment that features a strong, resilient heroine, hissable Nazi bad guys headed by the great Danny Huston, great supporting characters and the kind of femaleempowerment tale that resets the gender pendulum in a new direction

I wasn’t familiar with the Captain Underpants books by Dav Pilkey when I took in a screening of Captain Underpants: The

First Epic Movie.

I guess I was expecting a goofy kids’ comic book movie that would pair up nicely with Wonder Woman, but it’s really about two hyperactive fourth-grade best friends (voiced by Kevin Hart and Thoma Middleditch) and the Captain Underpants comic books they make together.

I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie as zippy and ADD as this one. The story rushes through all manner of visual styles, from the old textbook flip-books some of us doodled during detention to the boys’ homemade markers-and-Sharpie comic book panels to a sequence where the boys are rendered as sock puppets.

There’s a headlong momentum that’s almost dizzying; as the kids hypnotize their angry high school principal (Ed Helms) into thinking that he’s the real Captain Underpants, an evil genius inventor (Nick Kroll) posing as the school’s new science teacher invents a ray gun to stop all childrens’ laughter because he has the unfortunate name of Professor Poopypants.

About that: I’m not sure when toilet humor started to infiltrate family films.

Some slip it in here and there, and most aren’t that funny. I think I can safely say that Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is the apotheosis of bodily function gags, and they pile it on with no apology. There’s even a giant robot toilet reminiscent of the Sta-Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters. This may not be parents’ cup of sludge, but I’ll admit that I laughed a lot and was reminded of something a studio executive once said to Mel Brooks regarding Blazing Saddles: “Mel, if you’re gonna go up to the bell, ring it.” •

lose your eyes and imagine the Old West: the creaky saloons, the infinite desert and the hard railroads.

Imagine the Old East as well, the smoky nightclubs of Chicago and Boston, the misty lights of a timeless age. Ithaca’s early rock and roll and classic country conjurers, Grey Wolf Jam, are of this age, playing killer renditions of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Muddy Waters and Bill Whithers songs. The trio (quartet for larger gigs) has an infinite quality to them. Seeing them live, you’d think you just walked onto the set of My Darling Clementine.

“Having once been stage actors, Joey [Dugan] and I both try to get into ‘character’ for most songs,” lead singer and guitarist Bob Eller noted.

“Sometimes we imagine ourselves at least 40 years younger energetically trying to get with that beautiful girl on the beach. Other times we resurrect the pain we felt when the girl we thought we’d marry sent us the Dear John letter.”

Eller’s got the voice (and the humor) that nails the essential emotional qualities of a once blossoming age. Powerful and real—owing much to the belief in music and its eternal qualities—his style is cinematic and passionate, and the band moves seamlessly from classic to classic, spiraling your heart and moving your soul. The Times caught up with Eller recently as the band has a full summer of shows scheduled, starting this Sunday at Americana Vineyards. These guys are as cool as it gets.

Ithaca Times: What’s the power of playing music in a song structure that was created many decades ago: does it empower you guys, and is it timeless?

Bob Eller: I think the power of the music we choose to play is in its simplicity. Most of the songs have raw emotion, either happy or sad. Most happy songs reflect trying to make a love connection, while the sad songs are about the hurt in your heart when your bid fails. Because the message is usually simple, it lends itself to strong musical expression.

IT: How’d the Grey Wolf Jam form, and what did the original vision of the band look like?

BE: Our Grey Wolf Jam formed as a trio with lead guitarist Larry Real, bassist

Phil Jackson and myself on vocals, about 21 months ago, reflecting my preference for a clean, simple sound. Since then we have added a fourth member, Joey Dugan, who plays blues harp and flute.

IT: What kind of music did you grow up on, and do you remember when the first time music really and truly moved you?

BE: I grew up listening to a mix of very old country music by Gene Autry, Hank Williams, Ernie Ford and Jim Reeves. Then in the mid-50s I heard Elvis and Johnny Cash, which led me toward icons like Little Richard, Ray Charles and Sam Cooke. I

saw Little Richard do 28 songs live without a break, and then fall flat on his back. That was moving!

IT: Any plans on writing a new record, and what’s the band’s schedule look like these days?

BE: We will try to make a new CD this fall, to reflect a bit more current sound including the harmonica, flute and vocal harmonies. We have about 20 shows lined up for this season and are excited that we may have bookings in Lake Placid and 1000 Islands.

IT: What’s the music scene around here meant to you? Is there a community aspect to it?

he Homecoming Players invite you to witness the story of “five strong and broken women, age 11 to 80,” as they present Curved, the third show of their season at the Kitchen Theatre with performances Mondays June 12 and 19 at 7:30pm.

This is the U.S. premiere of Canadian playwright Kristin Shepherd’s latest work (Homecoming Players produced her comedy $38,000 for a Friendly Face two years ago). Literary director Arthur Bicknell was drawn to Curved by its audacious use of intermittent standup comedy routines to reveal “these appealingly dysfunctional women [who] grapple with freedom, love, sexuality, dying, and what it means — and takes — to be alive.”

It’s 11-year-old Wavy’s self-appointed mission to keep her Granny Wave alive, whatever it takes. Alternately aiding and obstructing Wavy are her pill-popping mother Del; Granny’s visiting nurse, Chloe; and Estelle, a poet and Wave’s exlover.

Four Homecoming veterans and one newcomer bring these characters to life.

Darcy Martin plays the feisty, precocious Wavy, while Camilla Schade takes on the part of her grandmother. Both actors are familiar on Ithaca stages, recently seen together in The Snow Queen for Cherry Arts. Martin appeared in last season’s Crimes of the Heart, while Schade has appeared in Dotty and $38,000.

Actor and playwright Kit Wainer returns to play Estelle while Binghamton actor Adara Alston makes her local debut as Chloe. Narration is by Eileen Hagerty.

Artistic Director Rachel Hockett recently interviewed Shepherd about her work and her path to playwriting.

“I came from one of those families that saw artistic pursuit as ludicrous except as hobby,” said Shepherd. “It’s crazy — we’re all incredibly artisticmusic, writing, visual arts — but I didn’t consider the arts as a real home until well into my first career.”

Shepherd was a chiropractor for twenty years, saying she could not escape the conclusion that one’s heart and head narratives, particularly the chronic ones, largely determine our physical narratives.

“I also became dismayed by the intentional power dynamics in doctorpatient relationships, which only work to really improve health when the patient has no sense of worth, intelligence, or instinct,” she recalled. “Over time, the narratives became the central thing. I was an actor by this point, so I thought, why not create narratives that speak to people like me about difficult love and judgement

this bit out of the play, but I couldn’t do it without losing its meaning. I could not get these women to play out a regular story without intelligently and directly using humor as a mostly conscious cover for their broken hearts.”

When asked her experience with audience responses, Shepherd replies “Oh, man. OK. My other plays have generated a really loyal audience in the small, northern city where I live — fairly easy comedy with heart. With Curved, the audience was shaken a bit, I think. I still have people coming up to me, more than a year later, telling me why they loved it or why they did not. It’s beautiful

e’re living in ironic times, people. For instance, it’s ironic that I spoke to Fred Schoeps of the Sustainability Center about their screenings of the documentary Tomorrow on the day that President Trump basically kissed off the rest of the world and pulled out of the Paris Climate Change Accords.

Tomorrow plays on June 14 at Cinemapolis at noon and 7 p.m.

Environmentalist, entrepreneur, author, and activist Paul Hawken has said of Tomorrow that it is without question. “absolutely the best and most creative film about the future of humanity and the environment.”

point in time. People are fairly politicized, following Trump on line. But this movie is really about what’s going on: in other words, concrete solutions that are available today. Not years from now, but tomorrow. The two people who put the movie together, Cyril Dion and Mélanie Laurent, did a crowdsourcing to put the film together. She’s a director and he’s a film producer.

IT: She acted in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds (2009).

FS: Yes, that’s her. They’re both French, which is ironic, with the Paris Accord [laughs]. And one of the drivers for them to put this movie together was, they both had children. She had just given birth, and they both realized, “What kind of world are we leaving for our kids?” Particularly in terms of an article that came out that in La Monde a number of years ago that basically [said] if we keep this up, humanity’s actually going to take the Earth down, in terms of a planet that’s liveable. It’s not about just going to Western countries: there are Indians, there are Africans, people of good will and it doesn’t matter if they’re white, black or whatever that are making some real differences. The bottom line is, there are solutions now that we have in order the situation with climate change, in order
