ew York State officials outlined a final remedy for the Ithaca Gun Factory site adjacent to Ithaca Falls, probably the most notoriously polluted remnant of the city’s bygone industrial era.

Last week’s information session was held with about a month left for public comment on the decont a m i nat ion proposa l, which would include a No Further Action order pertaining to the Ithaca Falls Overlook portion of the site. Ithaca Gun Factory was torn down after its final closing in 1986, but left behind a toxic mix of chemicals, carcinogens and most notably lead, that has since been one of the primary environmental headaches the city has had to grapple with.

The DEC has already conducted two Interim Remedial Measures (IRMs) consisting of the removal of contaminated soil to Soil Cleanup Objectives (SCOs) levels, making the Overlook property safe for future use in the DEC’s opinion.

The new proposal includes institutional controls which will regulate the site’s uses to minimize risky behavior that could incur harm from any remaining pollution, including a groundwater use restriction and land use restriction, in addition to regularly scheduled site reviews and an operation and maintenance plan. Engineering controls, which take the form of physical barriers to contain the contamination, include the soil cover system that was already trucked in several years ago. Further engineering controls have not yet been specified by the DEC. Gary Priscott, of the DEC, said a No Further Action order wouldn’t necessarily preclude the department from confronting any harmful levels of lead or other contaminants that are detected in the future, but that the research they have conducted shows the soil in the Overlook site is currently meeting the desired SCOs. continued on page 4

he Learning Web’s Dale Schu macher loves his job.

He’s the first face you see smiling from a sunlit-office off the front parlor of the converted old home (the headquarters he led the acquisition of in 2015), enthusiastic behind a massive desk as he walks you through everything the group’s been up to. For the past dozen years, Schumacher’s been the face of this organization, an apprenticeship-based youth services provider which began at Cornell more than 40 years ago. For someone to helm an organization with such a rigid commitment, Schumacher is the ideal spokesman.

“The web is very much as it always has been,” Schumacher said. “As we review different funding sources, we won’t apply for a grant if it changes our mission in any way. That’s how strongly we feel about it.”

But, after a dozen years in what he calls his “second career” and the cultivation of the largest organizational growth in the program’s history, Schumacher is hanging it up, leaving the organization in a much more inf luential place than it was when he stepped into the role of October 2005.

Since the Learning Web’s start on Cornell’s campus in 1972, its mission has remained constant: to give local children of all walks – from the homeless to the privileged – a chance at success through a mentor28 –Jul y

apprentice model of teaching, sponsoring their growth and maturation in ways others could not. Sometimes, this manifests itself as something as simple as connecting a kid with an internship opportunity.

Other times, it’s paying someone’s rent on the condition they work to get their lives on track, walking with them all the way to ensure they don’t stray from the path.

“For the last ten or 15 years in this country, the word ‘mentor’ has been huge,” Schumacher said. “You hear it all the time in Washington: ‘become a mentor!’ ‘Mentor youth!’ And there are a lot of mentor programs.

But very few that do mentorship the way we do it.”

Where the Learning Web is known for its Youth Exploration Program – a series for regular kids, at home, living with their families, working to build a sense of self-worth and prepare them for the world – it’s homeless youth the organization often deals with (more than 360 clients countywide last year), a group of which many don’t have anyone to raise them or acclimate them to life as we know it: they may lack social skills, may have a difficult time maintaining relationships or respecting other people’s property. Some may even lack simple habits, like cleaning or other domestic tasks.

“We weren’t born knowing

how to do those things,” Schumacher said. “We were taught… these young people haven’t had that. We aren’t their parent, but they take a lot of attention and a lot of time. We don’t just sign a lease and pay a bill.”

In the time they have them, the organization helps kids stay off drugs and alcohol too and, if they do, emphasize harm reduction. The past few years has seen drastic changes in society and in the perils facing youth; particularly the heroin epidemic. Each year since 2004, the Learning Web has compiled a survey of the issues facing Tompkins County’s homeless youth. In the last survey – conducted in 2015 – it was evident that while some issues had improved since the mid-2000s, rehab involvement and use of harder drugs has become even more prevalent, adding only another dimension to the work the Learning Web does. And the youth, Schumacher said, have always had a voice in that.

There have been challenges.

Largely funded by public funding and grants, they’ve actually reduced in staffing size as purse strings have been drawn tighter. At times, the 15 apartments it rents for homeless youth each year have been cut from the budget due to lack of funding.

“We have to be creative to find ways to get that,” Schumachcontinued on page 5

At this point, Priscott said, the proposed site management plan should be able to effectively handle foreseeable challenges. Either way, Priscott and the DEC’s fact sheet stated the public comments received about the order will be considered before the Record of Decision is released.

The most vocal critic of the proposal was local environmental activist Walter Hang, the president of Toxics Targeting who led the initial charge to clean up the site in 2000 after discovering the contamination. After millions of federal and state clean-up dollars, years of delays and several different clean-up initiatives, Hang once again made waves in 2015 by releasing EPA documents that still declared Ithaca Falls an “imminent and substantial endangerment to public health and welfare,” according to a 2015 article in the Ithaca Journal.

He urged Priscott to withdraw the No Further Action order, saying there is too much left to be done to allow complacency with what’s been accomplished so far.

Hang’s comments at the meeting came just hours after he was standing at the base of Ithaca Falls, berating the job done by the DEC and the City of Ithaca to properly rid the Ithaca Gun site of lead materials entirely at one time, allowing residual lead to recontaminate parts of the area that had already been cleaned. For emphasis, Hang collected a jar of spent shotgun shells that had been dumped by the gun manufacturer near the site throughout the years to show the shoddiness of the clean-up process so far.

Hang said he would now be renewing a written request for help from the Environmental Protection Agency, particularly in light of new criteria for the agency’s Hazard Rankings which now include Soil Vapor Intrusions, a problem often associated with the gun factory site.

Alderperson Cynthia Brock also attended as a member of the public, and expressed frustration at the stagnation of the clean up after so much time, especially, she said, since the problems have seemed so widely acknowledged.

The public comment period will be open until July 17. No more public meetings have been announced, and anyone wanting to voice their opinion can contact the DEC. –Matt Butler

“Didn’t even hear back,” he laughed.

But, with a smile, he said he knows their services will always be needed: Kids are a lways going to need to have certain services and opportunities to best transition into adulthood, he said, that they will always need skills to be able to get jobs and be successful. That doesn’t change.

All they need to do is let people know they are there.

“When I first came to Learning Web, I was told that we more

or less f loat under the radar,” Schumacher said, “ because if we’re too well-known, we wouldn’t be able to meet the demand of all the kids who’d want to sign up. My attitude is we’ve got to be bigger, shinier not in a boastful manner, but in a branding manner, so people know the work we do and will be willing to help us.”

Many Local Winners In FinalHour Funding Grab

▶ The Return Of Summer Concerts It fills us with great delight to see that the Summer Concert Series has kicked off once again, giving us warm vibes, cold beer and hot rhythms to help ease us into the weekend. Easily the best way to spend a Thursday afternoon.

Numerous local organizations received state funding in the final hours of the New York State legislative session last week. $52 million in funding was disbursed among 1,172 hand-picked recipients to f und a number of initiatives outlined in seven bills signed by the governor last week.

Commonly referred to as “pork barrel spending” by critics, the funds are not new spending: rather, they are specific expenditures assigned to a lump sum appropriation outlined in this year’s state budget.

The use of such lump sums has been criticized by state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, who has called out the practice for both the lack of transparency (resolutions do not include the names of sponsoring lawmakers or, oftentimes, a stated purpose for each grant) and, in several cases, the use of debt issued without voter approval, colloquially known as “backdoor borrowing.”.

Vote, But Most Of All, Vote Yes It’s Only Fair

obody likes the federal government.

Okay, statistically some people do and – wherever you are – I envy your optimism and the blissfully ignorant land of jubilant wonder in which you reside. Yet, nationwide, just 20 percent of all Americans have trust in their government and rapidly, we are seeing a denial not just of opposing ideologies but of facts themselves; inconvenient truths turned to partisan divining lines.

The federal government is a mess. People are mad. We see it all the time here in Ithaca, where we protest on sidewalks, on the Commons, in every placard we place in our windows for passersby to see. We’re a revolutionary folk, winning the war of hearts and minds here in the information war’s bloodiest battleground: the most educated city in America. And yet, for all this effort, we’re frustrated we can’t make a difference. We scream in our congressman’s face, he returning the rage with a calmly worded plea to find “common ground.” We write to our president, only to quit when we realize he probably can’t read. We march in the thousands, forming solidarity with tens of thousands of other people who will share this powerful moment on Facebook with their friends who, in all likelihood, were at the same protest, several blocks away.

It’s a frustrating battle and, for all our effort, can be easily disheartened by the lack of gratification; the elusive nature of victory.

But what if I told you, this November, you have a chance to have a more profound impact on your daily life that no president – not even an orange schizoid with bad hair plugs – could

take away?

Let me tell you a little something about the constitutional convention.

Under Article 19 of the New York State Constitution, every 20 years the most-highly-taxed citizens of the United States residing in one of the most corrupt and divided states in the union are asked one seemingly simple question on their ballot: “Shall there be a convention to revise the constitution and amend same?” Essentially, every two decades, New Yorkers have the option to make a profound change to their way of life.

On the steps of the State Capitol on Tuesday, a group of activists announced on the Million Dollar Staircase the launch of a campaign in support of a NYS constitutional convention, a statewide campaign to urge New Yorkers to vote “Yes” this November in support of a state constitutional convention and allowing voters to go beyond the regular legislative process by either creating a new or amending the current state constitution so that it better serves the public interest of 21st century New Yorkers.

This is an idea – a vote for an uncertain outcome where all of our laws and basic protections are exposed – that terrifies just about everybody in state government. It has been critically panned by every union in the state, largely from the fear of its hijacking by special interest groups to form a government more sympathetic to the plight of corporate interests. Governor Cuomo, in acknowledgement of this risk, said he supported the concept of a constitutional contin u ed on page 7

his written examination is the first step in becoming a New York State Senator or Assemblyperson, and your success on the examination is critical to continuing the process. The selection process in New York’s Civil Service System is designed to provide all applicants with an equal opportunity to compete for a position, and this examination will serve as one objective tool in the process. guess I am a bit confused by the shout out to the community given in the June 21-27 Ithaca Times.

I would hope that the Ithaca community would show solidarity and support for anyone losing their lives anywhere, and not just when the incident involves someone of color or a transgender person, which was how the victim in the Collegetown killing was described the the Ithaca Times.

Ithaca is not particularly known for showing support for law enforcement or Republicans, for instance, but I happen to feel that support and solidarity should be coming naturally in times of loss, no matter what color, religion, political persuasion or gender, and in my opinion, the Ithaca community tends to overlook the problems of the “average Jane or Joe” in favor of causes that are 6

more heated, that will garner more attention, that are more controversial. Every person’s death affects and should diminish humankind, especially when lives are cut short by criminal acts. No shout outs for feeling that way are needed. It should be a given.

convention but the reopening of such a staunch, well-crafted document would only lead to a disaster of a legislative session in the Capitol: the same disfunction of today, with everything to lose as much as there is everything to gain.

“The theory of the constitutional convention is just good people come in and they’re the delegates,” Cuomo told the New York Daily News earlier this year. “The way it will work is you’ll probably elect assemblymen and senators as delegates. And the unions will probably fund the campaigns. And you may make the situation worse, not better.”

After all, a constitutional convention isn’t the only way to update or fix the basic outline of our state government: this is why we have elected representatives, after all, here to listen to our concerns and draft legislation to fulfill our needs. This is perhaps why 67 percent of the state – according to a Siena College poll – have never even heard of the convention: they simply haven’t had to worry about it.

To which we ask, how is that going for us?

We do, after all, live in a state with an incredibly f lawed pension system, which milk public coffers in perpetuity and will only leave a bleaker future for the next generation. We lack singlepayer health care which, despite passing the State Assembly and having the approval of a majority of Americans – not just New Yorkers – will likely die in a state where, thanks to the Empire Plan, insurers have been largely immune to the worst of the fallout from the ACA. We have an inefficient, 11-tier court system badly in need of reform, which nobody can justify and costs our communities countless dollars that could be spent elsewhere. We have a failed anti-corruption commission in a state where 80 percent say our state government is corrupt (according to Gallup), a lack of ability to hold poorly-performing public servants accountable, a disparity between funding of city and state and historically, a governor with the power to profoundly impact counties and communities he’s likely never seen in a politicallycharged game of “got yer nose.”

Many of the state’s biggest voices have their doubts. De Blasio and Cuomo both don’t support it. Former Assembly Ways and Means Committee Chairman Arthur “Jerry” Kremer, who’s written a historical analysis of the four the state has held since 1887, said they have “little value,” that conventions have been nothing more than “a carbon copy of a typical legislative session:” heavy on the Albany insiders with a dash of special interest lobbying thrown in.

And so, maybe we don’t deserve a working democracy, that we allow ourselves to continue our fiefdom under special interests and the dead.

Maybe the cynicism is deserved.

If you’re mad, you should be. But if you’re mad and want to do something real, start learning up on the constitutional convention. Organize a discussion group. Educate yourself on whether or not it will work for your community, whether you have something to gain from it all. The fear may be overblown: after all, throughout the more than two centuries of constitutional conventions, just six amendments have made it in. It may be worth the paranoia: after all, with the nation’s 41st worst voter turnout last year, it’s easy to underestimate the power of the yearning masses. The best one can say is maybe this is what will bring them around.

It is a risk, I’ll give you that.

But Democracy, historically, has never smiled on complacency.

The assembly attempted to wrap up its year in Albany last Wednesday. Working well into the night to craft compromises and pass the legislatures last minute bills and resolutions. The assembly technically concluded their session, but are currently on standby, waiting to return as soon as this Wednesday to extend New York City mayor Bill De Blasio’s control over the city’s school system. The assembly failed to pass the extension of mayoral control since the governor proposed tacking on enhanced pension benefits for city employees. That added measure didn’t sit well with the senate who threatened to kill the bill entirely unless the bill was amended to add grants for charter schools in the city as well.

Since the legislature came to a stalemate in the 11th hour, the governor will now call them all back to vote on extending mayoral control without any add-ons.

The one major fallout that would cause damage to upstaters coming off of the mayoral control debate would be the legislature’s failure to pass extensions on county sales tax rates. The two measures had historically been tied together, a move widely criticized by both democrats and republicans alike. Should the sales tax extension not pass successfully when the legislature is called back this week, counties would not be able to collect the four percent sales tax that generates $1.8 billion for counties statewide, according to the state Association of Counties.

Tom Reed U.S. Congress Reed began last week calling out recently departed CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley for what Reed called “doing the despicable deed of blaming the victim” in a commentary Pelley delivered regarding the nature of rhetoric leading up to the shooting of house majority whip, Steve Scaliese, in Alexandria, VA the week before. Reed went on to say that Pelley should never be employed in the media again. Pelley’s commentary didn’t mention Scalise once.

During the week , Reed, who cochairs the Congressional Diabetes Caucus, spoke out against the soaring price of insulin and called out healthcare industry stakeholders responsible for the price increase.

Reed also supported the senate healthcare bill’s inclusion of the Collins-Faso amendment which would require New York state to take on the costs of its Medicaid system rather than issuing it on counties. In addition, he made several appearances on MSNBC and other outlets to comment on the newly released healthcare plan.

Philly Looks Back A pillar of Ithaca’s downtown is headed out... eventually.

hilly DeSarno is retiring as the City of Ithaca’s Deputy Director of Economic Development at the end of month.

Well, probably.

She was scheduled to leave in December, but was asked to stick around for a few more months. She suggested March 1.

Current Planning and Development Director JoAnn Cornish, whose office is just steps away from her front door, asked for April 1. DeSarno agreed. Now it’s June.

But at least she’ll be able to kick back, forget about work and take in some rest and relaxation. Maybe even have some time to go kayaking, one of the first activities on her retirement agenda.

Eh. Sort of.

Since the City of Ithaca is still in the early stages of replacing her, DeSarno has offered to stick around a few days a week in order to smooth the transition. But she makes it very clear: she’s not complaining, at all. She loves Ithaca, her coworkers, her job, and being a part of moving the city she cares about forward.

She’s been in her current position a dozen years now, a gig taken after nearly 25 years spent working in different forms of economic development in Corning.

and coming to the city’s litany of festivals.

Even as most of her friends eyed retirement, DeSarno, now 65, was thirsty for a new commitment, a fact made all the better given that the City of Ithaca’s Deputy Director of Economic Development job had been empty for quite some time. And so, 12 years ago, DeSarno applied and, after a job interview, she was hired.

They wanted someone who was versatile enough to entice business owners to the city, while also being able to serve as an advisor to businesses already there, handling problems and smoothing concerns to encourage an environment conducive to the economic success and stability both of Ithaca and the businesses therein. Cornish still hasn’t forgotten the day they decided to hire the out-of-towner she now calls a “good friend and a wonderful coworker.”

“When we finished with her interview I was so excited, I said ‘She’s the one,’” Cornish said. “She brought such a wonderful energy with her, very positive and she was very knowledgeable about business and had small business experience. She’s really a people person [...] I think that really has been the recipe for her success here, because she just has this amazing way with people.”

Economic Development Department finds itself both trying to attract businesses, but also cautioning those that want to enter the Ithaca market but might not fit.

That balancing act can make her a regular target of ire among the community.

DeSarno remembers, with an incredulous smile, a developer telling her she “ just doesn’t get it” early during her time in Ithaca. Countless others have slammed their phones down to hang up on her, and perhaps uttered some blush-worthy words just prior to said slams; DeSarno coyly avoids those types of details. But after whatever fight was finished, there was almost always a mutual respect left over.

It could take hours, or days, or weeks, but DeSarno said she’d always get a call back.

Breaking the bad news is one of the necessary parts of the role, but after 12 years DeSarno and Cornish, along with the rest of the Planning and Development department, have it down to a science. Cornish paints it as a “good cop, bad cop” routine, with DeSarno normally playing the former role, calming people down and softening the blow of any misfortune.

She values the honesty the job allows as well, believing her goals and the city’s align well and has made it a job priority to be straightforward with those she deals with professionally. As she grew older, she realized that was one career characteristic she may have been missing from her previous jobs, a sacrifice she was willing to make in her younger years but no longer.

“I didn’t have to wear two faces here,” she sighs with notable relief. “You want to just be who you are, you want to be working toward the things that have meant the most to you in your life. You certainly don’t want to be at odds.”

As much as she’s enjoyed her time at 108 E. Green Street, DeSarno’s time with the department has not been completely devoid of turbulence. In fact, this won’t even be her first time leaving the department. After her second year on the job, DeSarno took a leave to test out a new post in Watkins Glen, as President of the thenSchuyler County Chamber of Commerce.

She left for a few reasons, mainly concerning health issues her elderly mother was experiencing, but also as a result of nervousness regarding her role with the city going forward. DeSarno felt like she and former Mayor Carolyn Peterson, whose administration lasted from 2004 until 2012, got along well but were “on a different wavelength” when it came to the city’s development strategy. After discussion with Cornish, deputy of the Planning De-

partment at the time, DeSarno decided to opt for the city’s six month leave instead of resigning her position permanently.

A f t e r ju s t f i ve short weeks in her new position, DeSarno knew leaving had been a mistake.

Even her mother told her to go back to Ithaca, where she was happy. She phoned Peterson asking to return and after a meeting to ensure the mayor that DeSarno was fully prepared to return, she was welcomed back. The brief departure, DeSarno said, became a turning point in her career with the department and her relat ionship w it h Peterson.

“I wa nted her skills with the city of Ithaca,” Peterson said of DeSarno’s return.

“We got along quite well and worked very hard, with everything from the Commons redevelopment to small businesses like Buffalo Street Books or F. Oliver’s.

She had a very broad perspective, with the ability to have one-on-one relationships with small businesses.”

It h ac a’s de velopment pac e h a s picked up considerably, especially as the city has healed f rom t he Great Recession of 2009, which Peterson said significantly hamstrung development in the area during the latter stages of her administration. Under the leadership of current Mayor Svante Myrick, the city has begun to charge full steam ahead into a renewed focus on mixed-use building along while continuing Peterson’s goals of increasing housing.

Perhaps there are some projects DeSarno would have liked to see through before her re-

tirement, but she lists no regrets from her time with the city. The projects that she is proudest of are not the biggest, or the shiniest, or the ones that cost the most.

She quick ly notes lu r i ng t he Fi nger Lakes School of Massage and the Cornell Store to the Commons as some of her personal favorite accomplishments, and a mention of F. Oliver’s – originally from Canandaigua – is never far behind.

“Philly and I have worked together for a long time now, we’ve brought in a lot of projects and we really work off of each other’s strengths,” Corn i sh s a id . “I w i l l miss her. In you r professional career, t hat doesn’t come along ver y often or sometimes not at all. It just means finding someone who has her same spark, which is probably not going to happen.”

There’s a curious closeness in the department, it might speak to why DeSarno agreed to stay on for so long after her announced retirement date. DeS a r no ment ione d that during a recent workshop, the department was compared to a family, a sentiment Cornish repeated as well, citing its low turnover and small size that creates a close-knit group, sometimes for better or worse.

“Your work partners aren’t your friends,” DeSarno said. “You might become friends, but they’re more like family.

You have family members you really love, and there’s family members who I’ d rather go to the dentist than sit at the table with. But you learn to flex a little bit who you have to work with.”

Bittersweet as it is, DeSarno is comfortable with her decision to retire. One of her goals was to leave with the city on solid footing, not having to apologize on her way out the door. With Ithaca’s development scene thriving, and interest not showing any signs of dropping, the position is an attractive one that will appeal to quality candidates, allowing DeSarno to rest assured that her choice will not be too burdensome.

“I will miss her. In your professional career, that doesn’t come along very often or sometimes not at all. It just means finding someone who has her same spark, which is probably not going to happen.”

She said if there’s anything she can impart upon her successor, it would be to prepare for anything every day; there is no guarantee what voice will be saying what words when the phone rings. But in DeSarno’s mind, the person who fills her role will benefit from many of the same factors that have helped her during the last 12 years.

“I think of myself as a marketer, more than anything else. I’m selling Ithaca, New York. And it’s a freaking easy job.”• /

A Hardwood Legacy

ashad Richardson would be in his late twenties now, but many in the Ithaca Community remember the day in 2001 when Rashad lost his life in an accident. He was a typical 12 year-old in many ways – he loved his family and he loved basketball – but he was an extraordinary young man in many ways and his is a legacy that is held in very high regard

“If you’re not comfortable looking at data or looking at graphs, it’s very easy to be deceived,” Alex Moore, a professor of geology at Cornell and Senior Education Associate at PRI said. “It’s this deception of people who may not have the resources, knowledge or skill to know where to look and get to the root of what’s really going on.”

Then, about a week before the first copy was to go to print, the Heartland Institute – a free market-minded, conservative and libertarian public policy think tank with robust financial backing from the natural gas industry – announced plans to distribute 200,000 copies of a book, “Why Scientists Disagree About Global Warming,” to as many high school classrooms as possible with the same idea: to utilize the multiplier effect of influence powered by a schoolteacher and a place in the curriculum.

“They want to spread doubt on the robustness of the science that supports climate change,” said Moore. “They’ve done this for many years on many subjects.”

What has begun is something akin to information warfare: a battle between the deep pockets of special interest science and the grant-supported education arm of a small nonprofit on Ithaca’s outskirts. What was once a continuation of PRI’s public education mandate had become a reluctant stymie against a weapon of mass deception.

“When we got started, we weren’t trying to ‘battle’ anyone,” Robert Ross, PRI’s Associate Director of Outreach said. “Our intention was to provide good quality information in the face of a lot of misinformation.

We had no idea this other thing would arise at this particular time. But thinking about it from the other way around, this is a great time for us to have this particular product because now, we have something we can get in teacher’s hands.”

The concept of man-made climate change is nothing new. It’s been 25 years since the United Nations Framework Convention on climate change first called for the “stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations” to combat a trend of global warming seemingly compelled by human activity.

And it’s been 24 years since the Heartland Institute published its book, “Eco-Sanity: A Common-Sense Guide to Environmentalism,” which first characterized the heating of the planet as a natural occurrence and the human-sourced introduction of Co2 in the atmosphere, a negligible piece of what the institution frames as an “inevitable” phenomena of nature, brought about by natural solar cycles rather than the introduction of greenhouse gases.

To the untrained, the materials being distributed by Heartland present a strong narrative on climate change, supporting its claims with real data and a video featuring experts from universities such as Harvard and the University of Delaware. To critics of the work, it is junk science, the director for the National Center for Science Education, Anne Reid telling PBS last month the book seemed “clearly intended to confuse teachers.”

“They would take actual climate science data and manipulate it to make it appear like there was no issue: that there was no

change in temperature or rise in sea levels,” Moore said. “They would pick a tiny slice of a beautifully rising trend and – if you pick a tiny piece of this messy data – you can make it look like there’s no trend. They would say something with one piece of the data where, if you saw the whole dataset, it would tell a completely different story.”

And yet, there is nothing to prevent this type of deception: in some states, in fact, it is condoned. At present, six states have either enacted or proposed legislative measures allowing teachers to choose the type of science they teach (which according to a NCSE-funded survey of 1,500 science teachers nationwide, is practiced by 31 percent of teachers who challenge the ‘opinion’ of the 97 percent of scientists who believe in manmade climate change) and, given the tone of

climate change-denying president Donald Trump and the freedom-of-choice approach of a Betsy DeVos led Department of Education, the practice seems likely to continue.

Moore and Ross plan to fight back in an ambitious way: connecting 200,000 teachers and students with their book.

The logistics of doing so are tricky. They could always – much like the book offered by the Heartland Institute – be made available online for free as a PDF file. But to distribute a printed copy on their desired scale will take deep pockets: about $2 million, Moore estimates. So for now, they’ve set their sights smaller, the goal to land a copy of their book in each of the nation’s 37,000 high schools at a more reasonable $87,000 clip, a cost which they are now appealing to the public to help fund.

“Though we’ve been fairly successful at fundraising over the years, that is a lot,” Ross said.

The cost, they say, is worthwhile.

“We all feel, since Trump was elected, that science is under siege,” Moore said. “There are no more presidential science advisors, there’s no longer a science advisory committee in the EPA, climate change data has disappeared from the websites… there’s a lot going on. There’s a real need for teachers, learners, everybody to have access to really good information.”

Municipal Officials Warned Of Potential Collapse Of Emergency Response Network

M

embers of the Tompkins County Council of Governments on Thursday heard some details – and statistics – outlining potential “collapse” of community-based, emergency service and medical providers in Tompkins County if proactive steps by the county’s towns and villages aren’t taken.

Lee Shurtleff, Director of the Department of Emergency Response in Tompkins County, presented an overview of statistics analyzing the status of Emergency Medical Service resources in Tompkins County, an overarching assessment of everything from staffing levels to the needs and demographics they handle.

Essentially, as staffing levels have been strained (a third of volunteer providers, Shurtleff said, have been lost since 2013), demand has gone up, an issue compounded by a lack of volunteers, the need for taxpayers to start paying for services (and already pained local budgets), increasing call volumes

and increasing expectations of the services first responders should provide.

“It’s not that services aren’t being provided,” Shurtleff said. “It’s that there aren’t enough staff to provide them.”

Though resources are strained, they’re doing well with what they have: response times, today, are still decent, Shurtleff said.

But the question of who will step up to provide these services in the future remains in question.

“I go to a fire today and I see the same people I saw 20 years ago,” he added. “We have older people doing what younger people should be doing.”

In 2006, Tompkins County EMS agencies responded to 49,500 calls. Last year, they responded to 66,000 – a 30 percent increase over the course of a decade – between the police, the fire departments and the county’s ambulatory system.

This mirrors a historic trend over the past 40 years, where fire and rescue calls have qua-

drupled since 1976. This is partly due to fire departments now responding for emergency medical needs and mutual aid responses for other fire districts. Within this, there are now broadened job descriptions for everybody involved, from code enforcement to special trainings. As for EMS services, since 1976 the response amount has increased nearly 11 times what it once was, a symptom of a growing – and aging – county population.

But another component of this trend has come, in part, because of the collapse of fire departments on the borders of the county, a trend forcing departments to stretch outward to serve communities without adequate coverage or facilities of their own: communities like Slaterville, Richford and Virgil. But it also has to do with the county’s booming population and a sharp increase in the population of individuals 60 years and older, which has doubled since 1980. Many of these calls – about 1,200 a year – come from falls, while the opioid crisis has also contributed to the

quantity of staff calls each year, with calls for unconscious persons being a large contributor for calls related to individuals aged 20-29, some meriting a number of “Echo” calls; signifying cardiac arrest.

And all of this effort – funded by a combined $15 million of community budgets – is close to $1.2 million short of the actual cost of service, that amount covered by service contracts with towns like Dryden, Ulysses and Groton. All of this, Shurtleff said, is footed by the taxpayer, while ambulance levels are still what they were 14 years ago. All of their staff, unlike then, are paid.

“Among our group,” Shurtleff said, “this is not a sustainable situation. This is going to take combined thinking, a political will, to start thinking about these things and come up with solutions to preserve these life-saving programs.”

So what do we need to do? While officials suggested creative solutions – from student debt forgiveness for fighting fires to regular EMS training – Shurtleff said some ways to reduce call volumes can come by working with the elderly to reduce falls, improving initiatives to combat mental health and substance abuse, leveraging healthcare initiatives and looking toward the implementation of community-based paramedicine, which could potentially reduce reliance on ambulance use in the first place but, Shurtleff said, has largely been averted due to efforts by the state-level nurse’s union, stating it would heavily change their role in the medical system.

“Most of the time, when someone is coming to the E.R., they’re coming in an ambulance,” Shurtleff said.

Beginning his brief presentation by accusing the state and city of New York of playing a “dangerous game of chicken” with the local tax revenues gleaned from the provision of municipalities’ one percent sales tax extension, County Administrator Joe Mareane caught town and village officials up on county’s saga in coping with a statewide mandate for counties to consolidate their services in an effort to boost efficiencies and lower property taxes.

“The low-hanging, high-impact fruit is gone,” Mareane said, noting that Tompkins County has, for years now, maintained a legacy as a county that had identified and created its own operational efficiencies for years. Nonetheless, he and a shared services committee created by the county had pulled together a number of proposals the county may look into implementing in order to meet the state mandate, including a standardized process of digitizing records, the sharing of GIS/heavy equipment repair facilities and creating a standardized mass-communication system, a la phone/text/social media updates for things like leaf pickups/public meetings/etc for all communities to utilize with their residents.

All of this, Mareane noted, will take longer than the state deadline to fulfill, but even for the length of time it would take and the small potential for saving money, is still worth looking into.

“Maybe we should punt this year, but come back with an idea to save even more money next year,” Mareane said.

State Government Nonprofit Reclaim NY Calls Out Local Gas Moratorium’s Impact On Lansing

R

eclaim New York Initiative, a conservative-backed state reform organization, has issued an Action Alert to its statewide network calling for their supporters to apply pressure on Tompkins County and New York State to end the natural gas moratorium in Lansing.

The call was issued in a blog post on Reclaim NY’s website late last week and picked up moderate traction on social media, registering 30 shares on Facebook at press time.

“The Tompkins County Energy and E conom ic Development Ta sk Force (EEDTF) is pushing friends in Albany to extend a politically-driven ban on natural gas, meaning that new Lansing resident customers would no longer [be] able to purchase a readily-available and costeffectvie local source of energy,” says the post, which continues with a rallying cry to contact the state Public Service Commission (PSC) and the EEDTF and lodge complaints against the moratorium’s continuation, as well as a petition.

Reclaim’s post cites four statistics to point to the advantage of a moratorium repeal – all of which are verifiable – even if the logical leaps they are accompanied by might not be.

The group claims the “push” to get off natural gas is being made without Lansing community input and notes that Lansing’s community leaders, specifically Town Supervisor Ed LaVigne, are speaking out against the moratorium, arguing it makes new residential and business development essentially impossible due to a lack of supply. The “friends in Albany” referred to by Reclaim NY presumably refers to

the PSC, which is currently considering a proposal from New York State Electric & Gas Corporation (NYSEG) to alleviate the immediate natural gas pressure reliability problems that have resulted from increased demand over the years.

NYSEG’s plan would center on the installation of a compressor system that would aim to increase pressure toward the existing pipeline’s northern end. That proposal has been presented as an alternative to the controversial West Dryden natural gas pipeline project, which has since been suspended in favor of “other options” which, if followed through on, will allow Tompkins County to meet its 2050 energy needs and emissions goal of an 80 percent reduction in fossil fuel use while still allowing for continued economic growth in Lansing.

Tompkins County Legislator Martha Robertson, a member of the EEDTF who has been privy to the ongoing talks regarding the pipeline, denied the task force is pressuring the PSC to extend the moratorium. She said at this point the EEDTF is waiting for the PSC to issue their decision on NYSEG’s proposal, which was submitted in January. Once that decision comes down, they will be able to continue on but until then there is not much progress to be made one way or another. She also advocated that those interested in developing in Lansing turn to ground source heating systems instead of gas heating as a method of working around the moratorium’s limitations.

Lubin is 64 now and wants to have some down time “before the grim reaper comes,” but even when Harold’s Square is completed it won’t be the last project he oversees.

Lubin said he is fully prepared to see the Chainworks project through to the end, regardless if it lasts 10 or more years until completion. Lubin views that sort of commitment as part of his duty not only to himself but to the community he is building in.

“Absolutely it’s important for the community,” he said. “It’s like anything... you put a lot of work into something, it becomes part of you.”

of being a developer is that it could take years and years before a vision is finally realized. Ithaca’s notoriously rigorous development process can be a strain, but one he has been willing to handle through faith in the business opportunities the finished product will provide.

“I believe in the city, there’s not many downtown small communities in upstate New York that I would invest in,” he said.

“Downtowns are sort of a dying breed.

Ithaca is a very unique opportunity.”

There’s something else that attracted Lubin to the city. Challenges, of which Harold’s Square has seen its fair share, don’t seem to have much of a discouraging effect on him. He said he enjoys them, a trait that has at least partially fueled his career to this point, and more specifically pushed him to take a closer look at developing in Ithaca.

The Glimmerglass Festival Returns this summer

here’s no better way of experiencing exceptional opera productions than in a lovely location by a shining lake rubbing shoulders with the likes of fine artists, the highminded and even the occasional Supreme Court justice.

This is what to expect of The Glimmerglass Festival, the prestigious celebration of high culture opening July 7 with the promise of main-stage performances of three operas and one American musical, all running in rotating repertory through August 22.

Also scheduled on the festival site or nearby will be a veritable feast including small opera premieres, concerts, talks and discussions, plus myriads of special events.

Opening night on Friday features Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, preceded by a special dinner. The curtain goes up Saturday evening, July 8, with a perennial favorite, Oklahoma! by Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Handel’s 43rd opera and a baroque masterpiece, Xerxes, opens July 15, followed on July 16 by a rarely heard bel-canto work, The Siege of Calais by Donizetti. Three getaway weekends, one in July and two in August, offer the four productions on successive days.

The Glimmerglass Opera company has been around for 42 years. Its first season, in summer 1975, provided four performances of Puccini’s La bohème staged in the auditorium of the Cooperstown High School before audiences of roughly 1,200 local residents. From that time on, there have been at least three shows each season. In 1987 the company opened its new home, the Alice Busch Opera Theater, located

above Otsego Lake: the “Glimmerglass” of James Fenimore Cooper’s Leatherstocking Tales. With about 900 seats, the theater provides an intimate setting for the spectacle of the stage, with good sightlines and excellent acoustics. Since then the company regularly mounted outstanding productions of three operas and one musical every July and August, many being world

premieres. Since 1992 operas are performed in their original languages with an excellent projected English text.

The Young Artists Program, founded in 1988 by former music director Stewart Robertson, brings singers in the early stages of their professional careers to study and perform at Glimmerglass. About 40, chosen annually from over 700 applicants, earn opportunities to perform and cover appropriate roles in the main productions, and to work with world-class directors, designers, and conductors.

Francesca Zambello — world-renowned director of opera and theater productions, with a résumé that boggles the mind — became the artistic and general director at Glimmerglass in 2010. Under her leadership the company was renamed The Glimmerglass Festival and, since her first season in 2011, the number and variety of events has increased enormously.

With a reputation for creating innovative and thoughtful productions, she continues to carry out her aim of mounting works that reflect and possibly affect social change. With special ties to Central New York — she is a graduate of Colgate University, which awarded her an honorary degree in 2012 — she is dedicated to regional outreach.

Zambello’s inauguration of the Artist-inResidence program in 2011 has brought in some Met stars, who spend the summer working with

the young artists and performing in special concerts. Soprano Deborah Voigt was the first, followed by famed bass-baritone Eric Owens, in both 2012 and 2015 (just named artistic adviser to Glimmerglass and scheduled to perform main-stage roles in 2018 and 2019), baritone Nathan Gunn, and soprano Christine Goerke.

Renowned conductor Joseph Colaneri — on the Met roster since 1998 and artistic director of opera at the Mannes School of Music — has been music director at Glimmerglass since 2013.

He will conduct The Siege of Calais.

The scene almost any day this summer is inviting — an expansive lawn, the opera house with flags flying, pavilions with food and drink, inviting picnic tables, lovely walks around the grounds and through the woods, with glimpses of the lake. This year’s special installations relating to the operas, on the lawn in front of the theater, are “Terra Transmuto” by Katarina Isaksson, a sculpture of welded steel and stone, and Rob Licht’s gridded work of painted steel called “Glimmerglass Landforms.”

The festival’s theme this season examines the idea of home and homeland. Zambello feels this is so important and relevant to today’s world, as we look around and watch issues of displacement involving so many people. “The productions will be beautiful, moving, and Contin u ed on page 16

been an enormously popular Showtalk participant at Glimmerglass since 2012. She shared a friendship with the late Justice Antonin Scalia, who, as we know, strongly contested her on legal matters. They both loved opera, however.

This year’s artist in residence and acclaimed tenor William Burden will star, and performances will be on August 4 and 13, the latter followed by a Q&A with Justice Ginsburg. Also the main stage in July will have An Afternoon with Stephen Schwartz, with stories and songs by this award-winning composer-lyricist performed by Young Artists, plus a reading in August by David Sedaris from his books followed by a Q&A session.

Two smaller productions have world premieres in August. Stomping Grounds, by Victor Simonson, who conducts, with an English verse text by Paige Hernandez, who directs and does choreography— is described as “hip-hopera” and will have three performances. A youth opera, Robin Hood, featuring the Glimmerglass Youth Chorus and members of the Young Artists program, has eight performances. Second Stage events include concerts at the Pavilion — with the opera principals; with Young Artists presenting songs, scenes and stories on the theme of home; with Gospel music; with Klezmer music done by a quintet; and a baseball-themed presentation called Perfect Pitch.

Highlights of the Saturday-morning Showtalk series, held at the Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown, include Jeffrey Toobin and Faith Gay on current events related to 2017

opera themes and a program with music director Colaneri and Youn Artists performing songs that celebrate the human spirit. Zambello will present a 2018 preview over lunch at the Pavilion, and there are two baseball-themed concerts at the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Not to mention free events: previews of all main-stage opera performances, backstage tours, production changeovers on Saturday afternoons, Q&As. Early in June Glimmerglass holds “company intros” where the cast and the creative team get together in the large rehearsal hall. They go around the room, explain who they are while the director, conductor, and designers get to talk about their approaches to the production and this season’s theme. It’s like one big family, whose summer homeland is this place in Central New York, where people get to know each other, where young members and new voices come to learn, and from which they often go off to a major career. To name a few we’ve been lucky to see and hear in fabulous performances — countertenor David Daniels, bass-baritone Owens, and soprano Goerke, a Young Artist more than 20 years ago, who will be Elektra at the Met next season. There are others all over the world, whose careers were shaped here. Come to the opera and hear familiar and new voices, soaring out over the peaceful land. •

Liberty and Justice for Some Indivisible humanizes undocumented immigrants

A

car full of young adults in their early 20s likely conjures images of fun-loving and jovial moments.

Favorite songs blaring, sunglasses within reach, mini dance parties in the back row — typical, young Americans.

Indivisible, which screened at Cinemapolis June 22, took this familiar image and applied it to the context of Dreamers: young adults who came to the United States as children and are still undocumented, despite living nearly their entire lives in the country.

The film opens with that car full of young adults on a roadtrip to the U.S.Mexican border. Evelyn, Renata and Antonio are traveling to see their mothers for the first time in almost a decade.

Their mothers were deported back to their home countries (Colombia, Brazil and Mexico, respectively), but they still remain undocumented in the U.S. The Dreamers are not permitted to leave the country and re-enter, and their mothers are not permitted back into the U.S. The Dreamers get to see their mothers, but their embraces and tears are separated by a fence. They reach their arms through rusted metal bars and try to grab each other’s faces. Renata shares a diploma she’s received, and Evelyn tries to hug her mother.

“I’ve spoken to both people on either sides of the immigration reform issue,”

said Hilary Linder, the director and producer of the film. “I just kept thinking that the one thing we all have in common and that we can all come together on is family. Everyone who sees this film can feel the pain of being separated from family.”

According to the Department of Homeland Security, 61 percent of undocumented immigrants are between the ages of 25 and 44. In 2015, more than 333,000 undocumented immigrants were removed from the U.S. and 462,000 undocumented immigrants were apprehended. Indivisible touches on these stories and gives faces to these statistics on immigration.

Linder, who worked as a humanitarian aid for years before making Indivisible, went into the film with the idea that these people are more than statistics or foreign policy: they’re human. So often, she said, undocumented immigrants are thought of as trespassers and bad people. Even the language — referring to these immigrants as “illegal” or “aliens” — fails to see undocumented people as human. When Linder screens the film, she asks her viewers to shift their language in their everyday life in hopes to rehumanize undocumented immigrants.

you think that must be bad,” she said. “We need to really switch our thinking about that. Even just switching your language to undocumented immigrants — that can do a lot.”

Indivisible has been shown at 11 film festivals, and Linder even screened it to the United States House of Representatives earlier this month. While the film has received much recognition, it’s easy to forget Linder doesn’t have a background in filmmaking. The level of in-depth reporting and the fluid cinematography in the film feels like it comes from a seasoned producer.

“I was helping to respond in Syria right when the crisis began and working on internally displaced people in Yemen — those kind of things,” Linder said. “My

jobs also were writing reports, so I kept thinking, ‘Gosh, if I could show what’s happening in one of these crises, maybe that would do more,’ and that’s when the idea of a documentary came up.”

Filmed over the course of three-anda-half years and debuting during the end of 2015, Indivisible shattered the rhetoric of Republican frontrunners during the 2016 election — and yet, more fighting for immigration reform was yet to come.

“I truly think immigration reform is going to define our generations to come,” Linder said. “Sadly, we haven’t gotten there yet, but the fight continues. And reform is going to shape our country, whichever way it goes.” •

He’s in so many iconic films: Roadhouse, The Big Lebowski, Thank You For Smoking, Up In The Air, “Justified” on TV. He’s in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and you know it’s him the minute he opens his mouth to speak. If you’re a fan, you’re probably thinking of another terrific performance that I didn’t even mention.

In The Hero, Elliott plays Lee Hayden, sort of a version of Elliott if he were on the C List or lower. We first see him in a voice-over booth, doing take after take of copy selling a barbecue sauce. It doesn’t look like very fulfilling work, but for Lee, that’s all there is. His days are spent trying to get his agent to get him a gig, and smoking weed with Jeremy (the always delightful Nick Offerman), his dealer and one-time co-star; the two worked on a TV show called “Cattle Drive” years ago.

He’s also been divorced for years from Valarie (Ross), a successful photographer, and his relationship with his daughter, Lucy (Krysten Ritter), is unbearably brittle due to Lee’s habitual neglect and distance.

One minute Lee’s trying to find a job, and the next minute, he finds out that he has pancreatic cancer. And so The Hero presents Elliott with a fitting and melancholic role that allows him to use everything about him that he’s ever used to play a man who’s hurt but not defeated: maybe it’s a form of denial, but the diagnosis gives Lee a sense of crazy hope, that maybe he can find another great role before it all ends.

The only offer on the table for Lee is to accept an award from a film society fan club, and he attends with Charlotte (Laura Prepon), a sharp and observant lady he met at Jeremy’s place. Accepting the award, Lee gives a sweet, selfdeprecating speech that hits the internet and goes viral, and suddenly he’s in the spotlight: Lee Hayden is trending.

Brett Haley’s film, co-written by Marc Basch, has a real authenticity to it, not just about the sudden epiphanies brought on by an unexpected death sentence, but also about the cumulative realities brought on by a hardscrabble life lived on the outskirts of show business. Lee has only made one movie he’s proud of, and now he has a chance to make something more out of whatever life he has left in him. •

La Cage Aux Folles holds up in the present

saw Édouard Molinaro’s 1978 French farce La Cage Aux Folles at a particular point in high school when I was starting to see foreign films for the first time: new films like The Tin Drum and Excalibur and older titles like Jean-Luc Godard’s Sympathy for the Devil (One Plus One) and Roman Polanski flicks like Repulsion and Knife in the Water.

I remember seeing the film for the first time at Cornell Cinema, and I also recall that hip feeling of being in on some kind of cool tip. Like Tootsie (1982), the Molinaro film took drag humor and gender identity and made it funny, mainstream and very commercial: two

transplanted the story to Florida, the musical — and CRT’s production — stays faithful to the film. The story focuses on a gay couple: Georges (Brian Runbeck), the manager of a Saint-Tropez nightclub featuring drag entertainment, and Albin (Joel Briel), his romantic partner and star attraction “Zaza.” The complications begin when Georges’ son, Jean-Michel (Aaron Jacobs), brings home his fiancée’s ultraconservative parents to meet them.

The musical gives Georges and Albin an alternative family of sorts with the ensemble of drag queens that support ZaZa, dubbed “Les Cagelles”: Angelique (Giovanni DaSilva), Monique (Caiti

(McKenna Silva) and Mercedes (Michael Dikegoros). The group introduces the show’s signature number, “We Are What We Are,” reclaimed by a defiant Zaza at the end of the first act, redefining the power of Herman’s lyrics and music. In a dizzying variety of get-ups and hairdos, Anthony Wright steals every scene he has playing Georges and Albin’s housekeeper Jacob.

CRT’s production, under the direction of Bert Bernardi, is as warm and fuzzy as its source material. Considering the show itself is 34 years old, it stands as a tribute to the durability of its premise that it always feels so fresh and contemporary.

Runback is not the manic choreographer that Williams played (“You Fosse, Fosse, Fosse, Martha Graham, Martha Graham”) nor is he trying to be. His Georges is the ideal compere, but sweet and love-struck at his core, the essence of the doting husband. This leaves plenty of space for Joel Briel to act the temperamental diva who always needs to be coaxed out of her dressing room. (Once it’s clear that the prospective in-laws are coming, Briel’s acting ability will really be put to the test.)

The sound from Joel Gelpe’s eightpiece ensemble was fine and wellbalanced, and as usual, CRT makes the most of its intimate space. Starting with a simple but elegant gilt-edged proscenium arch, cast members bring in and take out all flats, furniture and props to change the scene, and the costumes and wigs by Jimmy Johansmeyer merit mention as well. •

Gilbert & Sullivan Comic Opera Impresses

t’s been more than 140 years since the first comic opera by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan was performed at the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in London, England, in 1875.

The collaborating duo composed

songs, dialogue and staging for 13 operas, and all have the trademark “topsy-turvy” theme of creative consequences, humor and crafty conclusions, which seem to have stood the test of time for many theatergoers.

This summer, the Savoyards Musical Theatre will return to the Schwartz Center stage at Cornell University with their production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Sorcerer, kicking off the 2017 free summer events series sponsored by Cornell’s School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions.

According to the president of the Savoyards and frequent lead soprano, Karen Dumont, the two-part play is about what occurs when a village partakes in a love potion.

surprise,” she adds. “The show has beautiful — and catchy— tunes and funny scenes just as entertaining as in the more well-known G & S operas.”

Dumont said enjoys playing her character, Aline Sangazure, who “not only sing[s] beautifully and act[s] dramatically, but also gets to show her comedic side,” once she drinks the love potion.

“As such, two of my favorite pieces in the show are the gorgeous soprano and tenor, love duet (“O love, true love” ...) and my comic duet with the baritone vicar (“O joyous boon”...),” Dumont said. “It is clear that Dumont, on a personal level, loves the character she is performing.

Another aspect of the production is the director Holly Adams, who said she was the last person to join the project after the play had been chosen and cast.

“The performers had been rehearsing with the musical director Scott Miller, production concepts had been sketched out and dates set,” Adams adds.

“Needless to say, I crammed for the exam — especially as I had never heard of this particular G & S show. I expected Gilbertian wit and skewer, which there is a-plenty, and a richly colored tapestry of sound, each note thoughtfully placed, from Sullivan.”

The work reflects a “first true venture between them [Gilbert & Sullivan] [and] is a more tender look at we humans than later G & S works,” she said. “There is a sweetness that seems to say that despite our ignorance and accidental cruelty, we can be, if not changed, at least adjusted, and that we are basically decent at heart. I also love the delicious comedy of this operetta, especially in Act II. The ‘dissembling’ of Doctor Daly is riotous.”

So whether the audience members are familiar or not with G & S operas, this production does appear to have been designed to be magical and amusing. It is also a thoughtful story in the tradition of G & S and one that Dumont hopes will “keep the tradition of G & S alive in Ithaca for years to come.”

“I think audiences will love the voices, ballads, and humor,” Adams said.

“It is basically 24 hours on a wedding day in a village, and things go wildly awry. The characters are both funny and lovely!”•

Heads Up Finding a second Home

clectic melodies and fresh vocals swirl and stew together to nourish the sound of Wild Root. Motown, reggae, rock ’n’ roll and whispers of funk fill the songs and animate the stages the band performs on.

Paul Fournier, lead singer of Wild Root, formed the band in his Florida hometown. Beginning as a cover band, Fournier began to peel away from covers and instead blended genres — sometimes with lyrics, sometimes without.

But before Wild Root’s inception in 2013, the roots of the band needed attention. Prior to living back in Florida, Fournier spent several years in Brooklyn working at BB King’s Blues Club as a promotions employee. “[Working at the club] was a wonderful experience for me, and I’ve loved New York ever since I first knew about it,” he said. “I left about four years ago, and ever since I wanted to come back.”

While the band has described themselves as creating “swampy beach vibes,”

203 Hook Place is a hideaway from the bustle

n the city, with all city amenities, 203 Hook Place feels as if it’s a country place. This 1935 Montgomery Ward kit house has been added to, updated, and upgraded, but it still has the well-proportioned rooms and arched doorways of the originals that rolled into Ithaca on the railroad in pieces, and were assembled on site. They came with complete plans and directions for assembly; each piece was marked and the plans showed where to use it.

The Tudor revival home, with its halftimbered façade, has certainly stood the test of time, and is nicely situated on West Hill, one of the leafiest neighborhoods in town. It’s on a quiet street, just up the road from Alternatives Community School, on a bus line, near Island Health & Fitness, close to McDaniels Park and a short jaunt from everything downtown.
