Citing Religion, Parents Question ICSD’s Unique Vaccination Policy

I

n recent years, the New York State Department of Health has shown it has begun to take vaccinations seriously.

Taking place everywhere from the pediatrician to the school nurse’s office, a number of efforts to elevate disease prevention in New York State, by most measures, have achieved great success: rates of vaccination among school age children, statewide, have soared and, despite a noteworthy flu outbreak this winter, the long-term impacts of widespread vaccinations have all but eliminated diseases like measles and whooping cough, which made a small resurgence locally this past year. The Centers For Disease Control even honored New York State for its vaccination efforts last summer, noting the fact New York’s immunization rates far exceeded national averages, in some cases by more than 10 percent.

But some parents loca lly, who have requested anonymity for this story due to the sensitive nature of the debate, have begun to speak out on the rollout of a recent vaccination effort in the Ithaca City School District they see as a violation of their religious rights, described by them as a form of “coercion” to

get them to vaccinate.

On Monday afternoon, 13 parents met with three members of the ICSD Board of Education to discuss the district’s process for granting religious exemptions to required immunizations in New York State, which locally presents a unique take on what is otherwise considered common practice in 47 other states around the country. While New York State has a standard procedure for granting religious exemptions to vaccination for children, it also allows certain entities – like school districts – to apply their own standard in line with state policy to determine whether a particular student is eligible for such an exemption. For the school district, this vetting process is handled by a tribunal of three principals from schools within the district and the school’s attorney, with no guarantee the family will have ever met them.

Though this process was noted by the board members in attendance – Robert Ainslie, Sean Eversley Bradwell and Eldridge Harris – to be completely legal and within their right to implement, many of the parents in attendance described the vetting process behind granting these religious exemptions as highly invasive and unfair to their children who, without the exemption, are not allowed to attend school without their required vaccinations. Some mothers in attendance said their kids had come home from school in tears, saying they would need a shot or they wouldn’t be allowed to attend school, all while leaving their parents unsure of where they’d received that information. Some parents complained of a lack of consistency in how the district granted their exemptions, saying

that while some parents had their exemptions accepted others, even with previous success in gaining exemptions for their children, were denied. One parent, who sought to appeal a denial of their exemption, said they had employment problems and, in tears, said they couldn’t afford the legal representation needed to allow them to uphold their religious exemption under a vaccination policy they argue is largely arbitrary.

The school district, meanwhile, is in a tricky situation: Though, according to recent NYSDOH figures, several schools within ICSD counted religious exemption rates among the highest in the state, the district has made a concerted effort to boost vaccination rates within the district wherever possible.

This, the parents argue, has led the district to implement a process where the school’s legal counsel will interrogate parents on their religious beliefs in order to deem whether they’re valid or not. If denied, parents would appear before a panel of three principals and a lawyer, who one parent said “grilled her” about her religious beliefs before ultimately, denying her exemption. Before the meeting, she said it wasn’t clearly explained what would be needed – in this case, a lawyer – to prove her family’s religious sincerity, a personal topic for many, especially to discuss with a panel of people they might not even know.

“It was disconcerting for me to see a higher lawyer driving policy[...]” she said. “That made it very hard for me to go to bed that night.”

From the district’s perspective, it’s about what quantifies religious freedom in this sense: Many religions were invented well

before vaccines, and religious and legal interpretations can clash in interesting ways.

For the district, the real question is how you define the eligibility of an individual’s beliefs to qualify for religious exemption, and whether or not one’s spirituality actually dictates whether vaccinations go against their belief systems. This is a very gray area: people’s religious beliefs are very personal and, through a tribunal process, where vaccination fits in one’s belief system is generally an arbitrary decision.

“The issue is really how does your decision to not vaccinate your child intersect with your religious beliefs,” said Ainslie. “And the state has given us the right to ask that question, and that’s certainly not going to go away.”

Down the road, district officials said they want to find some way to answer the question of how to get children denied exemptions back in school and more importantly, how to adapt to the bureaucracy. The topic, added Bradwell, might be brought up at the February 6 Policy Meeting, where it will likely be the main conversation and the intent of the policy, reexamined.

“This was not something we’re looking for,” Harris said. “This is an issue we came around to because we were challenged, that we’d ‘threatened these kids because of X, Y and Z.’ And we take that seriously. Now you’ve got our attention, and we’re going to go back and look at this. We’re going to have to do an autopsy on this and figure out what happened. This did not happen because we’re some robots that don’t care.”

ithin the walls of the Cl i nton House on North Cayuga Street, New Roots Charter School has operated for just under a decade providing high schoolers with an alternative learning experience.

The option has proved popular among parents and, this month, the school has announced plans to expand into an even larger facility – to cater to grades 6-8 – in the years to come.

However, the proposal has been met w it h apprehension from the the Ithaca City School District board, which in turn stated they would be demanding more accountability from New Roots, especially if the proposal is approved since more kids would then be subjected to New Roots’ education methods at a younger age. In the words of board member Eldredge Harris, “The elephant is going to stop ignoring the flea.”

It’s unclear exactly how that could be achieved, though. New Roots reports to their charter organization, the SUNY-Charter School Institute (CSI), which is currently mulling the school’s expansion request, and doesn’t have any hard performance or other thresholds to meet regarding the school district. Transparency will basically come down to whether or not the New Roots administration feels its necessary or beneficial.

The proposal requests an allotment for an additional 60 middle school students, and would include an additional downtown space that would house the middle school program, outside of the Clinton House location of the high school. Founder and New Roots leader Tina Nilsen-Hodges said they have been approached by several landlords who are interested in renting space to the school.

amantha McBean noticed there was something missing.

A diminutive woman of simmering intensity, McBean – a program leader at the Greater Ithaca Activities Center – was well aware of the symptoms. A mentor to the city’s most vulnerable, McBean had dedicated years to helping those who’d lost touch with the means to help t hemselves, ra isi ng up young women from the depths of addiction and prostitution to a place of empowerment and self-sustainability. But for these women to fall so far, she realized, meant a lack of support beneath them.

It started off with lunches and, with a growing membership, eventually evolved into regular gatherings and attendance at Sister-Friends events, a community group focused on the celebration of relationships between women of all ages. Town Prepares For Potential War On Deer

our years after the issue was raised as something worthy of study, the Town Of Ithaca Deer Management Committee had its inaugural meeting Tuesday evening, holding the first of what are anticipated numerous discussions on ways to address a rising deer population in the town and the environmental impacts they’d had on the area’s farms and forests.

Comprised of members of the Town Board and its Planning, Agricultural and Conservation Committees, the seven-member board’s 90 minute meeting consisted of preliminary discussions on deer control methods, ways to study the deer population and its impact, and how – when the time comes – to sell the public

on the sometimes controversial practice of population management. Ideas discussed generally followed the framework of proven deer management programs in place in areas like Cayuga Heights and Trumansburg, delving at points into some proposals suggested in a policy sheet of Deer Management Recommendations released last spring.

the district can use to monitor what goes on in New Roots classrooms, which is both part of the point of charter schools and part of the discomfort the district, and its Board, have with New Roots expanding.

Part of the accountability the district would ask for is to see New Roots’ effectiveness, ensuring students are actually receiving a quality education from the school. Over the last three years, New Roots’ graduation rates have bounced between 79 percent in 2015, 70 percent in 2016 and 87 percent for four-year cohorts in 2017. New Roots’ small student body can cause volatile bounces in rates; Nilsen-Hodges acknowledged the school’s requirement to SUNY-CSI is a 75 percent graduation rate. The school spent about

that the school’s home district, though New Roots draws its student population from 20 other school districts as well (according to the school’s 2017 annual report to its charter organization, about 54 percent of the school’s enrolled students are from ICSD). This draws some ire from ICSD, as they are forced to provide services like transportation to the school, but do not receive the money allotted

by New York State for students at New Roots. The money for the 80 New Roots students from ICSD goes directly to New Roots itself.

That’s standard for a charter school, though. A far more pressing issue, it seems is that there’s currently no mechanism in place

lowing the suit of multiple communities around the county, the Ithaca Town Board began to look into ways the town could go about managing its rapidly growing deer population, which local farmers claimed were having detrimental effects on their crops and livestock. A final document – drafted by the town’s conservation board – was completed in May of 2017, listing a number of recommendations toward actions the town could take. Recommendations included: • Forming an official Town Sub-committee tasked to draft, implement, and administer a deer management plan that complements initiatives of adjacent municipalities.

• Amending the current firearm discharge law to make exceptions for the $14,383 per student in 2015-2016, compared to $21,603 per student during the 2015-2016 school year in ICSD. New Roots receives funding per student based on a formula calculated by the state, which usually depends on how much the district where a student is from spends per pupil, and is usually significantly less than the districts receive.

Ainslie said even though the figure is lower, it puts a burden on the school district and the local taxpayers, since most school funding comes from property taxes in that area.

“If New York State really wants to support Charter schools, then they would take the onus of funding them off the local taxpayer, who’s already paying for the student to go to the local public

Nilsen-Hodges, meanwhile, said the school will meet a demand that has been voiced since day one of New Roots.

That breakdown in communication was no more apparent than at the public hearing held for New Roots, where ICSD Board members were taken aback by the revelation, to them, that New Roots had been operating a LEAP Program, approved by SUNYCSI, which is a preparatory program designed to prepare 12-15 year olds for high school, different from a traditional school experience. Meet The Candidate: Linda Andrei

T

he latest person to declare themselves as a prospective candidate against the Republican Congressman for New York’s 23rd District, Tom Reed, Linda Andrei believes, even relatively late to the race, she is entering while the iron is hot.

Though she had only filed with the Federal Elections Comm i s sion i n m id-D e c emb er, Andrei has already built a sizeable campaign infrastructure, boasts a sizeable war chest and – despite the recent efforts of regional Democratic committees to pare down the seven-person field as the primary approaches – Andrei said she feels she is arriving at a time where public interest is reaching a point where she can make an impression on voters across the Southern Tier.

An Ithaca resident of 17 years (she moved here with her husband, Cornell Computer Science Professor Emeritus Dr. Tim Teitelbaum, who owns local technology firm Grammatech), Andrei spent 30 years of her life as a practicing interventional cardiologist in communities across the Southern Tier, after which she left medicine to gain a MFA in painting (anatomy and printmaking, according to her CV) from the New York Academy of Art in 2012, which has led to an art career where her work has been displayed in galleries both nationally and internationally.

Af ter severa l quiet years, Andrei said she was spurred to run following her attendance at the 2017 Women’s March where, after a successful spring in her art career, she began to contemplate what impact she could have in the political realm. Despite an already crowded field coming forth that spring, Andrei began to conduct some research on New York’s 23rd District and decided a run for Congress might prove feasible, gleaning her confidence from the demographics of residents across the district to the vulnerabilities of her prospective opponent, Congressman Reed.

In November, she attended the National Women’s Conference in Detroit, Michigan and, after a few additional meetings, filed her ini-

tial paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission in midDecember, becoming the eighth overall candidate this cycle to put themselves in the running for the Democratic nomination this spring.

Since then, she said she’s put aside everything in her life in order to focus on one goal: Winning the Democratic Primary this June.

“I looked at myself, and asked other people who were very close to me what they thought,” said Andrei. “With their encouragement, I decided ‘okay, I have to do this now. I have to serve my country.’”

T hou g h e a r l y on i n h e r campaign, she does have one immediate advantage over other candidates in the race: finances.

According to a press release from her campaign, Andrei boasted approximately $131,000 in cash on hand to start her campaign, a significant amount of which was self-supplied. (Some donations, she said, were in the maximum allowable amount of $5,400 for an individual while others were smaller, in the $10 range.) That inf lux of funding has allowed her to build necessary campaign infrastructure rather quickly, already counting a campaign

manager, finance director and several other staffers even in her first full month of campaigning.

“Before I could ask ot her people to make a financial commitment, I had to show that I was making a financial commitment,” said Andrei. “And if I was going to get this campaign going, I had to show I had the money to pay the people who would be working on the campaign with a fair living wage.”

As for how she plans to define herself among Democrats as the primary approaches, Andrei said she brings a generally progressive, but unconfined ideology to the race.

“Broadly, I’m a person who cares about other people,” said Andrei. “Without any political label, I’m a fierce advocate for the well-being of others. If you want to pin me down, I’m a Democrat.

Within the party, I would say I’m a progressive, in the way I want to see progress happen.”

The Ithaca Times recently spoke to the candidate on a number of different areas of policy and perspective she brings to the table:

she was surprised at the Board’s reaction, since the school had publicized the program according to its “standard protocol.”

“We are happy to be transparent, and we are fully accountable,” Nilsen-Hodges said. “Charter schools are always evaluated every three years, and if we’re not meeting our goals we risk closure. [...] I would be interested in seeing, as we move forward, greater communication and collaboration between us and the school district.”

Nilsen-Hodges said starting a middle school is not supposed to be a comparison to the education ICSD is providing, but rather providing more options for students who may need it. Ainslie said he could understand the need and demand for New Roots when it initially opened in 2009, but as Ithaca High School has improved and the district has continued to address its own issues, he believes the need has dissipated. That assertion was certainly rebutted at the meeting by New Roots students, but Ainslie doesn’t deny that for some students, New Roots fills an invaluable role.

“New Roots can be anywhere, but why does it have to be in Ithaca? That’s always been the question,” Ainslie said, arguing the school would be better suited in a district with less options. “I don’t deny that there’s kids in a lot of districts with no alternative, but we have [Lehman Alternative Community School] that kids have access to, there’s many districts that do not have alternatives, the kids are lost and they do not feel that their schools fit them. That’s what New Roots is built for.”

Part of what seemed to disturb the board about the proposal was the thought that middle school students, guided by their parents, would be unable to experience any school in the rest of ICSD before immediately entering the New Roots curriculum.

“I have no apprehension of this type of education for that group,” Nilsen-Hodges said. “I do not share that fear, I am excited for the opportunity. [...] Next year will be our 10th year, and a middle school would be a great way to celebrate. I think that every student’s experience is unique to that student, if there’s anything I’ve learned in 30 years, it’s that.”

hen we think about our mental health, realists comment that “We live by a thread.” We can feel confident and optimistic one day and insecure and pessimistic the next day, even the next hour. Mental illness is equal opportunity; Psychiatrists and other observers will confide how many professionals – doctors, lawyers, accountants, and all the other fields – have at least occasional desperate struggles with their own mental health and well-being.

The Mental Health Association in Tompkins County, snuggled inside the historic Henry St. John’s Building on the corner of Geneva and Clinton Streets, has an open door for everyone and a colorful array of offerings to help us stay as mentally healthy as we can be.

Josephine Cohen, Executive Director of the Mental Health Association, radiates goodwill.

Josephine, adopted into a loving family as a young child, grew up in a delightful house (moved on a f latbed from Lodi Point) where she still lives, embedded in a rural community.

Josephine has worked at the MHATC for 18 years while acting as a single mom to Gabriella, a senior in college. Josephine loves her family, her work and this region.

As a biracial student, some of Josephine’s school years were challenging in a rural school system with only a few children of color.

“I often felt angry and sad,” she recalls. “As a

child, things happened t o m e out of my control. I didn’t know why and I never could express it to anyone. The sadness and anger inside got worse.

The bullying led my parents to arrange for me to attend school in Ithaca. I thought that if I was among a more diverse population, I would not be targeted. However, I found that being biracial for me meant that I didn’t fit in anywhere. I felt very alone and became depressed. I began to spend a lot of time in my room.”

Josephine’s victimization by bullying and racism, and her struggles with isolation and mental illness, inform her work at MHA. Even strong kids with loving families suffer mental and emotional distress and everyone needs extra support sometime. Josephine believes that for individuals with mental health issues, their recovery is greatly enhanced by social connection.

“Many people with mental health issues are not engaged in their communities, and many remain socially isolated and excluded,” she said.

“Negative perceptions, prejudice, stigma and discrimination contribute to the social exclusion of people living with mental health issues. I love to come to work in a place where my colleagues, our community guests, clients and interns talk to each other, support each other, take care of each other. No one need feel alone.”

Editor’s note: Last week, the Ithaca City School District cancelled its spring play after protests from the local community. A few people wrote in with opinions before the decision, but here’s one piece:

iven our current political climate, conversations about racial bias have been more common. But that doesn’t mean these conversations are comfortable to have. No matter how many times we engage in dialogue, there’s always more to learn. Such a conversation happened last Tuesday evening, January 23, at the Ithaca City School District Board of Education meeting.

People of all races involved in the community came out to support the growing movement started by students a few weeks ago when the casting decisions of the high school musical were announced.

A white student was cast as Esmeralda in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a role specifically for someone of color.

As a woman of color, I experienced similar practices in my own educational upbringing. I was immersed in theatre and had planned on pursuing it as my career. After being pushed out of the shows my high school put on, I decided to only minor in it in college. The heartbreak of racial bias in the theatre world made me feel as though every where would be like this and to try and have a career in this field would only lead to more heartbreak.

The overall conversation was not so much about the casting of the musical as it was about institutionalized racism in general, especially within the educational system. The poor casting choices made for this musical is just one example of an aftereffect of peoples’ unchecked biases. Every person is subject to racial biases whether they like it or not. Until

In my theatre community experience, being profiled, slighted, and having micro aggressions thrown at me started as early as sixth grade, the first year you were allowed to participate in the drama club. I was cast as a Pink Lady in Grease but I was the only Pink Lady without any lines. In seventh grade I was cast as Sylvia in All Shook Up, a role for a black woman. I am Latin. In eighth grade I was cast as Ariel in Footloose, to the dismay of parents and students. The minority was given center stage with a lead part usually held by white women. This was a shake up for my tiny town.

In high school I wasn’t cast at all. I auditioned for all nine shows I was there for and received ensemble every time. I knew I was talented, but I constantly lost out to exceedingly white casts. This was so heartbreaking for me that I decided not to pursue theatre as a career. If I can be judged by my ethnicity and skin color rather than by my talent in a high school, then I definitely could in college and in the real world. Why risk more heartbreak?

In college I am minoring in theatre and similar practices are held here too.

I’ve also been tokenized. It’s a hard balance to live by. Was I cast because I’m brown and they needed a diversity credit?

Was I not cast because I’m brown? This is

what it’s like for a person of color in the theatre world.

There’s this false perception that theatre is a liberal field and that Ithaca is a liberal town. Unfortunately, biases can be held by anyone in any field in any town.

The myth that racism doesn’t occur in Ithaca or in theatre in general is harmful to those that it does affect. I endured schooling in a liberal area of New Jersey.

That didn’t change my experience or discredit it, which happens all too often with the argument that “other places or fields have it worse.” Experiencing racial bias isn’t a competition and shouldn’t be treated with such flippancy.

I only wish I was more cognizant in high school as these IHS students are. I never said anything, and although other people of color I know had similar experiences, we never rallied together like the IHS students have. For me, the educational system I went through growing up was an unchecked machine that couldn’t be swayed. With entirely white teachers in my elementary and middle school and almost entirely white teachers and faculty in my high school, I didn’t know there was anyone to turn to. I didn’t know if I’d be supported if I spoke out.

social program called the Jenkins Center for Hope and Recovery, named after the agency’s past director, Beth Jenkins. The Center is open Tuesday through Saturday for those who seek mental health services.

The Jenkins Center provides a safe environment where mental health consumers can relax, have fun with peers, and share information and support among a staff of peers – not healthcare professionals or government administrators – who are trained to help promote recovery and improve the quality of life for individuals and their families. This happens by sharing their own recovery stories, providing encouragement, instilling a sense of hope and teaching skills.

Maybe someone just wants to catch the news on tv or join others enjoying a movie. Some folks come for the weekly Dungeons and Dragons game. Some of the people who stop in are caregivers. Sometimes those who enter arrive at the end of their rope – overwhelmed and agitated.

For all they provide, Josephine said, no one is billed.

“New people come in all the time,” Josephine said. “Everyone is welcome to come in and have coffee, tea. There are always snacks and on Wednesdays we serve dinner.”

So, what kind of help can we get at MHA, after we’ve had a warm drink and snacks? We can use the MHA computers, or stay for a computer literacy class. We can come back when someone from the Workforce Employment Center stops by weekly to speak about employment opportunities and assist with filling out forms to apply for jobs of interest. We can join other parents to swap good ideas for parenting, especially if we are wrestling with mental illness or someone we care for is struggling. Maybe we are caretakers of elderly relatives and need a break and a place to vent about the weariness and loneliness of caretaking. We can join a depression support group, or if we are young adults, a transition age support group. This is a group recently developed out of the unique needs of young adults 18-26, who are done with school and need support to figure out what comes next.

“Everyone who walks in has different needs.

So, our services are flexible,” Josephine said.

“Maybe someone just needs to get out of a bad environment for a breather. Or they are living in temporary housing, and want to check their email.”

We have a wide array of terrific services in Tompkins County – lawyers, doctors, housing specialists – who we turn to in the Emergency Room, in the courthouse, on the street every day. But what happens to vulnerable persons when they are discharged from the ER? When someone’s custody trial is finished, and they are bottomed out, feeling depressed, with no place to go? How do they feel? Josephine said that what is unique about MHA is that many of the folks who are talking together in parts of the building are talking about how they feel. In the rush and bustle of daily life, she said, there are not enough places where all of our needs, including our feelings, are addressed. For many people, being able to make connections in a relaxed environment may improve mental health.

Week O f 6/25-7/1 B y Vaughn G olden Barbara L ifton NY State A ssembly This week, the Assembly Ways and Means committee published its “Yellow Book” analysis of Governor Cuomo’s proposed budget.

Following the new federal tax code, Cuomo said, in his proposal this year’s, “is going to be the most challenging budget that we’ve had to do.”

The plan calls for a 2 percent increase in overall spending, but proposes cuts and spending caps to stem the state’s $4.4 billion deficit. Cuomo’s looking to new taxes on opioid prescriptions, cigars, vapor products and e-commerce to plug the budget gap.

One area that does not see cuts in the governor’s proposal is education, an area where Assemblywoman Lifton has advocated continued investment.

This week, Lifton sat on the joint budget hearing for Higher Education where she used her allotted time to ask witnesses if they had the capital funds available to retrofit buildings with renewable energy sources.

Tom O’M ara – NY State S enate The Senate was also wrapped up in budget hearings last week. Its Monday session only lasted eight minutes. Senator O’Mara took time to emphasize a piece of legislation he’s cosponsoring that would bar the state from issuing mandates onto local governments and school districts without provided funding.

“The state enacted the local property tax cap in 2011 with a promise to localities and school districts to roll back the heavy burden of unfunded state mandates. We still have a lot of work to do to lift that existing burden on local governments and local property taxpayers,” O’Mara said in a press release last week.

The legislation passed the Senate Local Government Committee, and now proceeds to the Finance Committee where it will likely also succeed. The same bill passed the Senate last year, but was never taken up in the Assembly.

Tom R eed – U.S. Congress The House had to hunker down in Washington while the Senate deliberated to reopen the government early last week. After another continuing resolution was passed Monday afternoon, Congressman Reed and his colleagues headed back home for the week.

Reed spent his time touring businesses, promoting the newly passed tax plan.

It’s a super short week in Washington for House Republicans. Following Tuesday’s State of the Union address, the House GOP makes a mad dash for the Greenbriar hotel in West Virginia for their annual retreat to align policy ideas for the coming year. When they return next week, they’ll have to pass another continuing resolution or a spending bill to keep the government open, though the real fight will likely occur in the Senate.

Those barriers can vary widely: around a third of their clients face some sort of economic or educational barrier to getting a job, about a quarter have a developmental disability, another 15 percent have a mental health issue along with a developmental disability, about five percent are dealing with a physical disability and the rest is a menagerie of people who face all types of different circumstances that have forced them out of gainful employment, according to Executive Director Joe Sammons.

Sammons said some workers use Challenge to re-establish themselves in the workforce, only joining for a few days or weeks before matriculating out to work elsewhere. Others have found a community within Challenge worthy of a decadeslong mutual embrace. Helen A., who lives with a developmental disability and whose last name was withheld at Challenge’s request, has been part of the Challenge workforce for 44 years, currently working as a paper shredder in the in-house facility.

Helen’s been nicknamed “Steam-Engine,” she said, because of the speed at which she works, a claim bolstered by her receiving the Steam Engine Award last year at a company event. Working gives her a chance to get out of her living facility and allows her to interact with other people. Of course, the money doesn’t hurt, either.

ders,” Helen said. “I’m in my 60s, so I don’t like to leave here to just stay home and lay around. I have lots of friends here [...] I like coming to work because you can make money and use it for lots of things.”

Having been there for so long, Helen has seen the best and worst of Challenge.

Peaks and valleys are an incumbent part of existence for all nonprofit organizations, with their fates routinely bending to

exterior factors like national elections or state funding decisions— things the organizations themselves typically have no control over. It makes for a roller-coaster existence for most nonprofits, the highest of highs often followed by dips, repeated essentially into institutional tradition.

Pressure from outside makes self-inflicted problems all the more significant.

As Challenge enters its 50th year, it is still trying to emerge from one of those many valleys, though this trough lasted two years and critically damaged the organization. In 2014, the previous Challenge administration spent millions to buy a building in Groton, intending to jumpstart another social enterprise with a Fresh Food Hub business which could employ Challenge workers, bring in additional revenue for the company and serve as a local resource for farmers.

But Challenge soon found itself in over its head. The nonprofit lost at least a million dollars to the failed business, and eventually abandoned the effort, selling the facility to Old Chatham Creamery in 2016. The organization is now working to place some of their participants in the creamery to satisfy its packing and cleaning needs.

During that same two-year span, New York State funding shifts led to budget cuts and a 16-month vacancy between the last Executive Director’s departure and Sammons’ entrance both contributed to a perfect storm that ended with $2 million in losses — around a third of the company’s total value. Though of lesser impact, Pugliese also said that she believes Challenge’s move from downtown, out of their iconic “Pink Building” on State Street, to the nondescript South Hill Business Campus caused some in the community to forget about the organization, or assume they had shut down.

The food hub turned out to be a miscalculation, but a move that was well intentioned as the next step in the Challenge’s ongoing quest to expand services and, with expansion, provide more opportunities for its clients. That overarching mission has been consistent since the organization was founded by Bob Sprole in 1968 with the goal of providing a space for programs aimed at helping people with disabilities gain education and job training. Initially, the workers were housed in a Challenge facility only, but the program quickly adapted to the desires of its workforce.

Much like the general population, Challenge participants don’t want to be

isolated from the rest of society, they want to feel as much a part of the local community as possible, Sammons said. Challenge quickly pivoted, and within two years of opening it was deploying its workers out into businesses and workplaces throughout Ithaca, while retaining its in-house programs to accommodate those who prefer that or may need more intense supervision or guidance.

“We had to create opportunities to get people out into workplaces, even if they had a disability or some other barrier,” Sammons said. “You find that people who have a disability or face other barriers are not different from you and I, they still want to grow and show their skills and graduate to different jobs, just like all of us do.”

Challenge now serves over 1,000 people and works with 150 employers across Tompkins County. Its own businesses, started in the 1970s but gaining more importance in the 1990s, have grown to include contracted services to businesses around the county such as janitorial cleaning workers, imaging, food co-packing and general staffing, known as social enterprises.

Hilton Garden Inn manager Teri Tarshus is one of Challenge’s biggest supporters in Ithaca, contacting Challenge shortly after she became manager of the Hilton three years ago to build a working relationship between the two. These kinds of relationships are mutually beneficial and particularly valuable for Challenge. Its workers hone versatile skills that can be used in a variety of different positions and the organization can tout relationships with local economic pillars like the Hilton, Wegmans, Cornell University and Ithaca College to help extend their reach to other businesses.

“For us, it’s an extremely positive relationship,” Tarshus said. “The value is huge, it’s something that you can’t even measure. [...] It is so invaluable to this community that coming back and growing the relationship that I have for myself, but also for my business, it was a no-brainer.”

Tarshus said she has four employees who have been hired by Hilton from Challenge, then another team of four workers from Challenge and two people who are being trained by Challenge supervisors at the Hilton to learn skills for work either at the hotel or elsewhere. It’s a microcosm of Challenge’s goals, which are built on providing five ingredients (skills building and training, work experience, community and employment placements, support

Officially, their mission statement is to “connect people who want to work with employers seeking a diverse, trained and reliable workforce.”

“When people come in, we can take them into one of our businesses and give them some work experience and get them some training they’ve never had,” Pugliese said. “The idea isn’t for people to be hired by our social enterprises and stay there forever. It’s to get them there, get talent and skills and then move them out into other jobs in the community.”

With that in mind, Sammons is look-

ing to ensure Challenge stays stable enough to effectively pursue those primary goals. He freely admits that while Challenge is out of imminent danger, it is not quite “out of the woods,” as acknowledging the flaws of the last several years is a long way from actually being able to fix the damage that was incurred.

“Challenge has been through its ups and downs, financially we’ve had some really tough years because business opportunities have either grown or shrank,” Sammons said. “What we really have to do is build a really solid, sustainable infrastructure that can navigate the ups and downs of the economy, no different than

any other employer in town.”

The construction of that infrastructure is one of the more confounding parts of the organization, though they have settled on a set course of action. In October 2017, the organization’s Board of Directors approved a five-year strategic plan, listing four imperatives that include keeping Challenge’s commitment while evolving, growing more community-based and employment-focused social enterprise businesses, rehabilitating from the 20142016 nadir into a healthy organization and engaging the community. Accomplishing these goals would cost the company an estimated $800,000.

Complicating matters, Challenge is unable to rely on as much state assistance as some of its other nonprofit counterparts receive, with about half of its funding coming from New York State compared to far more for some other nonprofits. Challenge fills the resulting gaps in a myriad of other ways, from the revenue of their social enterprise businesses to regular fundraising like their annual Krispy Kreme doughnut selling campaign that has become popular around town, perhaps foremost with Mayor Svante Myrick (“That guy loves the doughnuts,” Sammons said).

“People with disabilities don’t necessarily rise to the top of the government priority list, we have to constantly remind state lawmakers and people running the budgets that money spent in this area makes for a stronger community,” Sammons said.

“This is a part of the population that’s a little hidden [...] We have to fight for every dollar we get.”

Even with all the obstacles Challenge has faced in the past and at present, it has found comfort in the bosom of a consistently supportive and loyal community.

Sammons and Pugliese both say without that community, there’s a decent chance Challenge would not still be standing today. There have been massive fundraising efforts in the past, and the list of employers willing to work with Challenge includes some of the biggest and smallest businesses around.

“I don’t think the community would have let it happen, Challenge might have looked different but it would have still been here” Pugliese said. “As we push that boulder up the hill, it gets smaller and smaller.”

This Cub Has Grown Up

ucy Schoedel remembers her first few trips to Lynah Rink. She recalls, “My mom was a figure skater, and she took my twin sister and I to Lynah for lessons. I remember doing some performance in shorts and a T-shirt. We were 5.”

Soon thereafter, Lucy traded in her figure skates for hockey skates, and she was soon a member of the “Cub Club,” which is described on the Tompkins Girls Hockey Association as such: “Officially formed in 1995 by Cornell alumna Megan Shull ’91, the Cub Club has carried a strong tradition that links TGHA girls with Big sisters from the Cornell Women’s Ice Hockey Team. Since 1995 both organizations have continued with their common goal of giving women and girls an opportunity to play hockey.”

Lucy has great memories of her time with the Cub Club, wearing face paint, being on the ice with some of college hockey’s best players, and her affiliation with TGHA helped to shape her perception that she could take her hockey experience to new levels.

After her most recent visit to Lynah Rink Lucy told me, “Coming up through the TGHA, and knowing what it provided for me, it’s cool to see it’s still going strong. I remember being a member of the Cub Club, and when we spent time with the Cornell women, we totally idolized the whole team.”

She added, “It was great to see how the team interacted, the great camaraderie and the friendships that were formed, the traditions, and you could start to see your future as a female athlete.”

It was the perception that she could take her game to new levels that led her into Rich Armstrong’s office at Ithaca High School when she was a 9th grader. “I had played (she was a goalie) on the girls’ team from 6th grade through 9th,” Lucy offered, “and I walked into Coach Armstrong’s office and told him I wanted to try out for the boys’ team. He said ‘okay,’ he gave me a shot, and I will always be

Lucy became a starter, and as might be expected, there was some pushback, and Lucy recalled, “Some of the parents were not super pumped about it, but overall the experience was really positive and most of the parents – especially the moms – were really supportive.

They liked having a strong female out there.”

For the next three years, Lucy minded the net for the Little Red and, when she graduated in 2006, several opportunities awaited.

Harvard came calling, as did St. Lawrence, but Lucy ultimately chose to play for the University of New Hampshire. She said, “I had met Colette Bredin when she played for Cornell and I was in the Cub Club. She was on the coaching staff at UNH, and it was cool to have a familiar face there.”

After playing at UNH for 2 years, Lucy transferred to Syracuse University, eager to help the Orange get their new women’s hockey program off the ground. After graduating, she went to grad school at Wesleyan, where she got a taste for coaching, then came an opportunity to be an assistant at Brown, followed by her first head coaching stint at the Northwood School in Lake Placid. Lucy was content there, but when she was approached with what she calls “an opportunity to coach some of the absolute best hockey players in the business,” she accepted the job.

That leads us back to that last visit to Lynah Rink… Lucy was not wearing skates, and she was not – brace yourself – cheering for the Big Red. She is now an assistant coach at the Harvard, and while she will always be grateful for the foundation provided by the TGHA, Cornell and the Cub Club, Coach Schoedel now bleeds Crimson as well as Red. Lucy told me, “My job is to be the best assistant coach I can be, and as a team we have some very tangible goals. One of them – of course – is to win a national championship and I want to help see that through in any way I can.”

Mentors Studio Museum in Harlem, an American contemporary art museum devoted to the work of African-Americans artists from the 19th and 20th centuries. They went to Cedar Point Theme Park in Sandusky, Ohio – the “Roller Coaster Capital of the World,” and the Kalahari Resort in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.

The group never had an objective at first – mainly to bring young women together, staying busy and away from the worst influences the world has to offer. But it soon grew into something more. They met regularly, sometimes just to talk. They traded numbers, and invited strong women in the community to talk with them on everything from their lives to their greater ambitions. And each, in their own ways, were shown her all of their flaws and equipped to address them in ways that, on their own, may not have happened.

An advocate of a single payer healthcare system, Andrei said she believes in a fairly pragmatic approach to reforming the nation’s medical systems: while providing for a taxpayer subsidized healthcare system in line with that practiced in other areas of the world, she also advocates for a system where funds for research and development – rather than a profit motive – becomes the main motivator behind innovations in the pharmaceutical and medical technology industries.

This happens through an expansion of the pre-existing program of Medicare, which covers basic healthcare while leaving room for more entrepreneurial pursuits, like cosmetic surgery, to flourish in the marketplace, and divesting from the private insurance systems that currently reign supreme in American life. Paired with an increased emphasis on preventive care, Andrei said massive savings across the industry overall can eventually, be realized.

“In the 30 years I’ve been practicing medicine, I’ve really become intimately involved in people’s lives,” she said. “When people are suffering, or are sick, or in pain, it seems to me the last thing they should be worrying about is how they’re going to find the money to take care of themselves. We had established a really great program in the 1960s with Medicare, which has done a very good job with very low overhead. The profit motive in medicine should be eliminated, and should be on par with the rest of the world. We need to be sure we’re practicing the best care, that we’re providing for the quality and extension of life rather than the denial of care that the insurance industry and big pharma are involved in.”

For this to work, this relies on addressing the underlying issues behind the nation’s health, which include poverty, food insecurity, housing and social isolation.

“Just being in each other’s lives is that ‘profound moment,’” said Young. “You build these connections and might get a text in the middle of the night where we can say ‘you got this girl, just keep your head up. You’ve got to keep going.’ It’s important to know you’re not alone. A lot of young women think nobody’s thinking about them, or cares about them, or that nobody can help when they get in trouble. This group teaches you that you have all the tools you need to help yourself in others, and that’s the biggest thing for us: to be that presence in each other’s lives and eventually grow and learn as time goes on.”

In terms of health, there is an economic system that depends on it and is hurt by it.”

For instance, she notes that for small business owners, private, employer-provided health insurance can prove burdensome to their ability to invest in their business or even, prove prohibitive to starting their own business.

There are similar tie-ins, she argues, in the energy sector, with the dependence on and incentivizing of natural gas exerting influence over the nature of the entire economy in how it produces and delivers goods and services. This leads to the nature of our national security, which is compromised in part by securing these resources from foreign countries mired in conflict. (Editor’s note: In 2016, U.S. net imports foreign oil hit an all-time low at 24 percent, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.)

While admittedly “not an expert on everything,” as she said, Andrei said she does know what questions to ask and, if elected, will rely heavily on the scientific community to help inform her policies on energy and the environment.

Deer Impacts

According to Town officials, a program intended to actively cull the deer population in the town is needed for a variety of reasons. A high prevalence of deer in an area has often been linked to high rates of lyme disease among the local population (Tompkins County, for example, experiences substantially higher rates of lyme disease than other, similar-sized counties in New York State.) and, statewide, deer contribute to annual crop losses amounting to more than $53 million per year. And that’s just for plantlife: White tail deer can sometimes carry a parasite that can lead to the death of farm animals, which the DEC doesn’t account for the recovery of. Committee member Ferguson, who owns a sheep farm, said she has experienced livestock losses of approximately 10 percent due to diseases carried by deer. (Judy Wright, a senior resource educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cayuga County, wrote an article on the environmental impacts of deer for the Auburn Citizen last Fall.)

Though in its early stages, a number of logistics questions remain. While meat from the program would likely be donated to various programs and food pantries around the region, some proposals – like an entrails disposal area at the town’s public works facility – might merit a little more thought “The public works workers don’t seem too excited about that, so we’ll see,” Goodman said.

The group plans to meet monthly until a plan is developed, after which it will be passed along to the Town Board for consideration.

IU band BRIAN! releases its first full-length album

or the first time in seven years, Ithaca Underground band BRIAN! releases its first full-length album, complete with the band’s signature composition tricks and amplified bassoon. The group celebrated the release of the album just this past Saturday at The Cherry Artspace.

Championing experimental math rock since 2009, the group’s first album titled Chasms of Color & Thought is a culmination of two years of writing both lyrics and melodies. The process began after the release of its most recent EP, and members Bubba Crumrine, David Resig and Willie B began a collaborative effort of writing and recording right away.

What separates the new songs on this album from previous works shines through in the writing process. Crumrine said he wrote the base composition for the band’s music originally, but this time around, each member offered talents early on in the process.

“This one is much more shared,” he said.

“This release, ‘Stand Tall’ and the title track were the compositions I brought to the table, a nd t hen Dave has been doing a lot more writing.”

Wit h Cr u mrine a nd Resig classica l ly trained and with Willie B’s extensive experience as a touring musician, crafting outlandish measures and time signatures comes naturally to the group. One song on Chasms of Color & Thought is even constructed like a

palindrome: the same music played forward or backward.

For this album, bassoonist Resig invested in a new amp for his instrument, which is known to accompany the bass section in orchestras — not rock bands. Finding parts and means to amplify a low and soft instrument presented challenges, mostly because of a lack of resources.

“This recording is the first one we have that is truly tailored for that instrument,” Crumrine said. “There were a couple bands that came out of Europe and the U.S. in this rock in opposition movement that had bassoons, and that ended up inspiring the early stuff we were doing. Outside of that, there’s not a whole lot.”

The idea to include a bassoon in the group came early on. Crumrine and Resig had been friends for around four years when Crumrine learned Resig played the bassoon in his youth.

Upon hearing this, Crumrine had the immediate urge and passion to start up a band: an excuse for two friends to play together — and with a bassoon, no less.

With Crumrine on guitar, bass, electronics and vocals and Resig on amplified bassoon, the only element missing was rhythm. Since the core of the group’s music was in zany compositions, Crumrine said BRIAN!’s music was difficult to relate to most listeners because there was no rhythm section to anchor the music. But after recruiting Willie B, the group has been able to keep a percussive section in its songs.

“Our drummer really brought everything to life, and he just brought this huge propulsion behind it,” Crumrine said. “Willie was really instrumental in the arrangements and transitions and dynamics in the writing process. Even with Dave coming in with a sort of structure, he’s coming in to flesh it out into a real piece of music.”

After long meditations on writing and recording, Chasms of Color & Thought is ready for digital download or CD purchase, with perhaps more releases from BRIAN! In the future.

aturday, Dec. 2, 11:30 a.m: There was a queue stretching into The Commons f rom t he entra nce to what used to be the Titus Gallery and had become BoL restaurant. With little fanfare, and no advertising, the owners of the adjacent restaurant, Simeon’s, opened the doors to their new establishment.

BoL is completely different from Simeon’s. There seems to be an intent to take advantage of the current trend of opening Asian restaurants, particularly those specializing in noodle dishes, that serve multiple courses in bowls. The name, BoL itself, is an attempt to be a derivation of “bowl.” Although the word BoL is not unique as an alternative to bowl in the restaurant world, it is the first time it’s being used in Ithaca. At BoL, all the entrees and desserts are, indeed, served in a bowl.

When you enter you’ll see a prominent overhead menu and you’ll also be given a small clipboard with the menu. After checking your choices and putting your name at the bottom, you’ll give it to a waiting staff member who will hand it to a cook. After paying at the register you’ll wait in a small area for the food to be heated. When your order is ready your name will be called and then it’s up to you to try to find a seat in a very small street level dining area where there are about fourteen chairs, or maybe head up the stairs to a small dining area where there is room for about 20 more diners. The entire restaurant, including kitchen, is only 1,200 square feet. Dining is communal so you should be aware that you might be sitting next to a stranger. When warmer weather finally arrives, BoL hopes to offer limited outdoor seating. To gain access to more of an outdoor atmosphere the windows on The Commons are part of a working garage door which can be raised or lowered based on the weather.

The selection of food choices is derived from popular Asian dishes, including ramen noodles (Japan), pho, (rice noodles popular in Vietnam), dumplings (China) salad entrees and a choice of two desserts.

grain bols are served with quinoa combinations over field greens. Salad bowls include six toppings and one dressing and start at $8.75.

The ramen, pho and dumpling bols are each served with a different variety of fresh vegetables including kale, carrots, mushrooms, scallions, bok choy and green beans. When you choose a soup bol you also choose a broth — vegetable, chicken and pork, or coconut red curry — that you’d like the veggies to be served in. For example, ramen noodles normally come with a chicken and pork broth, however it might be fun to mix and match on different visits. If you don’t add a protein, these bols cost $10.50 and the portions are generous. If you do opt for a protein you can have an egg (a six-minute soft boiled egg), chicken, beef, pork, shrimp, or tofu, for up to $3 additional.

I find the bols very lightly seasoned — I’m guessing they were created to please anyone and everyone with the idea that we can add our own choice of different table condiments thereby creating a more f lavorful blend that suits our personal tastes. The condiments include caramelized shallots, Hoisin sauce, sweet Thai chili, crispy chili oil and hot chili oil. It could be fun to experiment with different soup bols with different condiments at each visit.

There are two desserts on of fer, a banana caramel bol and an oreo cookie bol, for $4.75. I tried the former and found it interesting that it was really a sundae except what normally would have been ice cream emerged from the kitchen as rice pudding. I guess the owners want to keep the rice and noodle theme consistent. In any case, it was delicious. It was served in a cardboard bowl-like dish and featured a light caramel sauce, sliced bananas, a few wafers and a whipped topping.

BoL uses a lot of plastic, both for dishes and spoons, and I’m happy to say management prominently features recycling receptacles.

BoL is presently ser ving the same menu from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., except for Monday when it’s closed.

Although it’s sometimes difficult to find a seat, my meals at BoL have seemed healthy, portions are copious, and I’ve enjoyed the informal atmosphere. •

Three new bio-pics in theaters do not disappoint

I’ll admit it, I was really looking forward to David Wain’s A Futile and Stupid Gesture, the bio-pic of National Lampoon founder Doug Kenney, who also helped create “The National Lampoon Radio Hour” and Animal House and Caddyshack. Kenney (a spacey Will Forte) might be the most important comedy figure of the last 70 years; Kenney either fell or committed suicide in Hawaii in 1980.

Wain’s film is a rushed greatest hits plow through magazine articles, sketches that may nothing to modern audiences. You have to see these movies to appreciate them; tepid re-creations won’t do.

The movie has some meta weirdness, like casting Martin Mull as “Modern Doug,” narrating his life as if he’d never died. But as odd as the film is, it can’t help but stumble into rampant bio-pic clichés.

In a sea of actors trying to recreate the ’70s flavor of the magazine and SNL, the two reasons to see the film — you wish they were in it more than they are — are Thomas Lennon as Lampoon/SNL writerperformer Michael O’Donohue and Seth Green in a breathtaking but brief bit as Christopher Guest as Flash Bazbo. There’s a certain snap and verve when Steven Spielberg is really on his game, and The Post, which approaches the saga of The Washington Post’s decision to publish the Pentagon Papers, and treats the whole thing as a nail-biting thriller. Tom Hanks plays editor Ben Bradlee opposite Meryl Streep as Post owner Kay Graham; counting All the President’s Men, this is the second time Bradlee has been a major character in a film, and The Post earns welcome comparison to Alan J. Pakula’s 1976 classic. (Last year’s Mark Felt bio-pic felt like a TV movie; this is the real deal).

by Steven Spielberg; A Futile and Stupid Gesture, directed by David Wain, on Netflix. f you’re like me, when you hear the name Hedy Lamarr, you think of one of the most beautiful of all Hollywood stars, or you think of a punchline from Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles. If ever proof was needed that we tend to dismiss a pretty face, Alexandra Dean’s Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story will probably surprise you as much as it did me.

Lamarr wasn’t just a career Hollywood ingenue, she was extremely bright, and the uncredited — and, alas, unpaid — inventor of what became Bluetooth and WiFi. And not withstanding her film career, which again found her not just starring in studio films, but producing her own, Lamarr was one of those people who seemed to have lived two or three lives before she ever attracted the attention of MGM mogul Louis B. Meyer.

Most of Dean’s film is told in Lamarr’s own words, thanks to a 1990 audio interview, but the film also hears from family members about the woman’s many marriages; Mel Brooks, who was a true-blue fan and very critical of the way she was treated throughout her career; and actor Diane Kruger, who is involved with an upcoming Hedy Lamarr feature film.

Dean’s film won’t just have you scrambling for TCM with your DVR — it’ll teach you about a truly unique individual.

‘Ironbound’ Vibrant, Real

Kitchen’s latest play nails character and scene

he short and sweet of it: you have just five more chances, this Wednesday through Sunday, to catch M. Bevin O’Gara’s spellbinding production of Ironbound at the Kitchen Theatre, a glorious combination of design, direction and acting married to a heartrending, luminous script.

A turn toward American realism at the dawn of the 20th century included the loose collection of painters known as the Ashcan School. Art critic Robert Hughes states their leading light, Robert Henri, “wanted art to be

akin to journalism. He wanted paint to be as real as mud, as the clods of horse-shit and snow, that froze on Broadway in the winter, as real a human product as sweat, carrying the unsuppressed smell of human life.”

ing the abuses of her second husband. Her take-no-prisoners attitude produces a wry comedy as she disarms the men in her life by cutting through all their BS. She sees her life, and possibly her self-worth, as an unending series of transactions.

Every once in a while, MacCluggage allows Darjya to melt a little, and these moments of lightness sparkle.

Marcin Mesa plays her raffish first husband, Maks, with a stubborn charm.

Wrapped up in his dreams of becoming a singer, his reason for leaving their Polish homeland, he misses her hints at her pregnancy (there is a cunning indirectness in the script’s exposition). We see them first playing a game of gathering bits of change, she admonishing him on his English. The scene is delicate yet unsentimental, and Mesa and MacCluggage pack years of a relationship into sparse minutes.

Darjya’s flight from her second husband leads to a tenuous connection with a possible street hustler Vic (Adrian Abel Amador).

Director O’Gara allows this enchanting scene of missed connections to breathe, the long moments of silence as active as those of speech. Amador mixes amiability, humor and a touching loneliness in his portrayal.

Darjya’s relationship with current boyfriend Tommy is the heart of the show, and Austin Jones brings him to roaring, boisterous New Jersey life, underlying his bluster with a lack of cynicism, which makes him a very lively suitor.

Deeply felt performances suffused with an unbroken humanity, persisting against the odds, make for a great moment in local theater. •

Ironbound’s subject is Darjya, a Polish immigrant scrapping by on menial jobs in a factory and later as a housecleaner. Playwright Martyna Majok paints her picture through a series of crisis moments over two decades of Darjya’s life, all occurring at “a bus stop at night, a quarter mile from a factory in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Or where there used to be a factory, depending on the year.”

David L. Arsenault’s set of broken asphalt and concrete, with a utilitarian bus stop complete with fluorescent light, backed by a faceless brick structure behind chain-link fencing (scenic artist Ruth Barber) creates the drab Ash Can reality through which Darjya navigates. Yet over time, this place of waiting, for a bus that rarely arrives, attains a gravid beauty of its own, especially under Arsenault’s lighting.

Lisa Boquist’s apt costuming (including a parka that actor Kate MacCluggage maneuvers like a shell of defense), and Lesley Greene’s evocative sound design (traffic, crickets, blaring metal, mournful rap, Chicago blues and Springsteen) complete the environs.

Basics define Darja’s world: money to support a child, a car to get to work and at the top of the play, $3,000 from her cheating boyfriend, so she can search for her drugaddicted son, recently run away.

MacCluggage is astonishing in the role: tightly wound, perennially suspicious, cautious of giving away even an ounce of independence. The actor creates this shell about the tender inside of a woman who obviously dreams and has passions, yet who must always calculate costs, especially after surviv-

Wells’ Birding Survival Guide New book on birding tackles the ABC Islands

E

xploring the white, sandy beaches of the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao), a couple pulls out their binoculars — not to get a closer look of the ocean’s horizon, but to explore the hidden creatures in the trees. From the ruby-topaz hummingbird to the bananaquit, the birds of the ABC islands are just as warm and vibrant as the islands themselves. And when former Ithacans Jeffrey Wells and Allison Childs Wells traveled over the years to the islands for jazz band performances, they finally crafted a field guide bursting with detailed maps, alluring photos, helpful details and anything else necessary for birding experts and beginners.

Birds of Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao was just released at the end of 2017. Jeffrey and Allison penned the book by combining Allison’s creative writing skills and Jeffrey’s background in ecology and evolutionary biology — and their love for birds.

Growing up in Maine and living in Ithaca for nearly two decades, getting caught up in the birding culture didn’t just become a hobby for the two but also a lifestyle.

The book itself, as Jeffrey describes it, is four books in one. Him and Allison put together a comprehensive guide for the birds of each island with large photos and maps with exact directions for bird watchers new to the area. In addition to these aspects, the guide delves into the ecology and climate of the places, which is not limited to discussions on environmental conservation.

Jeffrey noted how disorienting traveling to a new country can be — especially when trying to bird watch. Signs are in

different languages, and asking directions from locals can be difficult if you don’t speak the native tongue. But with Birds of Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Allison and Jeffrey have created maps to overcome those hurdles. With the book, the two also seek to heighten awareness on conservation, as efforts in preserving the animals and wildlife have diminished over the years. And with tourism more accessible through the

field guide, it continues the conversation on the topic.

The idea of writing the book came after the couple published two previous books, also on birding: one on Sapsucker Woods (The Birds of Sapsucker Woods) and one on Maine (Maine’s Favorite Birds). Jeffrey has published a few books about birds on his own as well.

After covering the two places they’ve lived together, they sought to cover some-

“Sometimes I think the interest in music and sounds translates into some interest with birds, just because they sing and make music and you identify them by their sounds,” Jeffrey said. “Both Allison and I were interested in birds from junior high

“We would get up in the morning and look at the birds, and we kind of fell in love with the birds and the islands,” Jeffrey said. “Then we started going to the other islands at different times of year, so on and so forth.”

Over the years and through their education at Cornell University, their interests in music and birding began to intertwine.

orners Gallery on Hanshaw Road in Ithaca welcomes its newest exhibition: The Weight of the Mark. This art display showcases the works of several different artists, tackling one common theme in a variety of ways : the theme of marking and signatures in the creative process.

This collection of work is a part of a juried exhibition, with the works presented only the best of those that were submitted to Corners. Among the jurors for the showcase are Amber Lia-Kloppel, Visual Artist, MFA New York Academy of Art and Carla Stetson, Assistant Professor of Art, Ithaca College.

Focusing on the theme of signature in the form of art, the following artists will have their works on display at Corners: Doug Baird, Bill Benson, Laura Glenn, Ileen Kaplan, Diane McPherson, Margy Nelson, Diane Newton, Barbara Page, Allen C. Smith, and Carol Spence.
