Lifton Happy With INHS Ditches Fined Funding to Education Syracuse Contractor

T

he $155.6 billion state budget passed on April 1 “accomplished a lot of good things,” according to Assemblyperson Barbara Lifton (D-Ithaca), Tompkins County’s representative in New York’s lower chamber.

Lifton said the Assembly succeeded in “adding almost a billion dollars” over Gov. Cuomo’s budget in education funding, including $627 million in foundation aid, a 6.5 percent increase. The Gap Elimination Act, or GEA, a post-2008 recession measure that essentially took back state school funding after it was granted, will be eliminated after years of school boards agitating for its end. In total, the increase in education funding over last year’s budget is about $1.5 billion, for a total of $24.6 billion statewide.

“Now as we’re going forward, year after year we can talk about foundation aid,” Lifton said. “We can get back on track in phasing in more support for the poorest schools through the foundation formula.”

The statewide $15 minimum wage initially proposed by Cuomo to take effect by 2021 “received some pushback from upstate farmers and business people,” Lifton said. The resulting deal hammered out with Senate Republicans aims at a $12.50 minimum wage upstate by 2021; the wage is going up to $9.70 at the end of 2016, and then will increase by 70 cents per year.

In New York City the minimum wage will reach $15 by the end of 2018, and the phase-in will hit $15 by 2021 in Westchester County and Long Island. But upstate, by 2019 the governor’s office can freeze the increases if the economy goes bad, and a study will be performed in 2021 to see if the increases should continue.

Otherwise, they will be tied to inflation.

“If they give an increase to New Yorkers, it should be the same increase at the same time for everyone,” said Adil Griguihi, owner of Casablanca Pizzeria, in a release sent out by the Tompkins County Workers’ Center. “The rent is expensive in Tompkins County; everything is expensive here. … But the state should also be figuring out a way to help small business owners.” Lifton said the Assembly added a tax credit for farmers and a fund to help not-for-profit organizations affected by the minimum wage increase.

“It isn’t as simple as a new contractor grabbing all the paperwork and subcontractors,” Reynolds continued.

“Construction firms all have a particular way they do business that are not always compatible with each other.”

There are federal, state, and local monies all pledged to the project, and all of that money comes with deadlines for completed construction work. Those funders “totally understand the situation,” Reynolds said, and are “waiting for us to come back to them with a revised contract.”

The initial construction schedule for the 54-unit apartment building and 12 townhouses was 14 to 16 months, with

the land trust will need to provide half of the total purchase price. The second half will be due in December 2016.

Once acquired, the FLLT will complete a comprehensive assessment of the property along with a site management plan.

The land trust is already in the middle of discussions with the owners of the sole parcel separating the Petkov property from the Roy H. Park Preserve. The owners have expressed interest in the sale of a portion of the property for conservation and continued public access, though as of right now there is no timeline for the purchase of that property. “It totally depends on the landowner,” Zepp said.

Owning the entire connected watershed adds value to the conservation of the land because it provides a full, protected corridor for animals. “In terms of wildlife, in many ways bigger is better,” Zepp said.

“Out that way we’ve seen river otters and fishers, which are wide-ranging animals that require a large, intact landscape.”

The allocation from Tompkins County’s Capital Reserve Fund for Natural, Scenic, and Recreational Resource Protection will also build upon an earlier investment that allowed the FLLT to acquire the Berntsson property, which created the first link in building the Emerald Necklace Greenbelt, an effort to link 50,000 acres of existing conservation land in an arc around Ithaca. The Emerald Necklace is recognized as a priority project within New York State’s Open Space Plan. • To raise funds for the land purchase, the land trust is hosting two upcoming events: “Let’s Drink to Clean Drinking Water!”

ucson Nguyen was elected as an alderperson from Ithaca’s Second Ward last November with just over 65 percent of a 896-voter turnout in a race against independent Sean Gannon; Nguyen had won a contested Democratic primary in September against Isabelle Ramos, again with just over 65 percent of a 253-vote turnout. Nguyen, a software programmer at cybersecurity firm GrammaTech, lives with his wife Amber, an associate professor of psychology at TC3, in the Northside neighborhood. The Ithaca Times sat down with Nguyen at the State Street Gimme! Coffee recently to talk about his first few months on Common Council, along with his ideas for housing policy and increasing access to broadband service within the city.

Ithaca Times: Are there any parts of city business or issues that have surprised you in your first few months on council?

Ducson Nguyen: The personnel and spending portions of council make sense to me, but before joining I didn’t realize how much oversight we have over things like mayoral appointments and various leadership positions on the city staff. And then there’s issues that come up like these two bird items [Planning & Economic Development committee] has on the docket this month … I thought the prohibition on feeding geese would be noncontroversial, but we’ve had a lot of birders come to council and speak in front of us in favor of allowing the feeding of wild geese. They feel it connects the public with wildlife. And then there’s the backyard chicken program, where the latest version now allows slaughtering. I wasn’t aware of a strong desire for that to happen within city limits.

IT: Any issues where you’ve been surprised about an apparent lack of interest from constituents?

DN: I ran on housing issues, which resonated very well when I talked to people one on one. When CIITAP [tax abatement] revisions came to planning, and more recently incentive zoning, I tried on social media and the website I set up for Second Ward issues to say here are the proposals and we welcome feedback. Aside from a couple of usual stakeholders like union leaders and advocates for certain issues like child care, I haven’t heard a ton from regular folks. If people have opinions I do wish they’d share them with me. But maybe they view it as ‘We hired you do this job and you can do all the reading and analysis.’

IT: What are your thoughts about the new abatement and incentive zoning proposals?

DN: We’ve got some great ideas,

It occurs to me that an anthology is a shrewd move for a small publisher like Cayuga Lakes Books. (Surely, small publishers need all the shrewdness they can muster and breaks they can get.)

This one has pieces from 43 contributors. That’s a lot of heft; also variety.

Who isn’t intrigued by a 43-tray buffet?

There’s plenty to like, and if there’s something you don’t? Just move on.

Even shrewder is the financial math surrounding this number of writers. The book has a prefacer and a guest editor, too.

Let’s say every one of them has 25 friends and family members who will buy a copy of the book. (I can tell you, as a self-published author, of perhaps average personal popularity, this is a conservative estimate.)

At $19.95 a pop, this tallies sales of $20,000plus, before a single review: a healthy starting point.

Some of the contributors are of modest fame, but none (might I suggest, with due respect) immodest nor worldwide. In one of the pieces, however, the author imitates the voices (so to speak) of three Ithacans of vast renown (who will go unnamed, for now).

This got me thinking of the phenomenon of fame.

No doubt the author picked his three subjects not just for their intrinsic interest, but for their fame. There’s no sense in imitating, for appreciation, the unknown.

It’s like doing card tricks on the radio.

But it seemed to me the author selected the absolute top three famous people associated with Ithaca. I wondered if that

was purposeful. Then I wondered if my estimation was correct. Who are, in fact, the most famous all-time Ithacans?

I decided to do some casual polling.

I quickly discovered why pollsters have trouble with accuracy: there are qualifiers to even the simplest questions.

First, it’s people “associated with” Ithaca, not “from” Ithaca. There are plenty of candidates among the former, not many among the latter.

But “associated with Ithaca” is more than “attended Cornell.” We’re looking for some longevity here. This leaves out (among many others) Christopher Reeve, Thomas Pynchon, Harry Chapin, Keith Olbermann, and Ed Marinaro (none of whom would have made the cut, anyway), and Kurt Vonnegut, E.B. White, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg (who might have).

The three in the book who got this all going are Carl Sagan, Vladimir Nabokov, and Hans Bethe.

My first re-evaluation of my initial regard of their preeminence (threeeminence?) surrounded Bethe. He’s an important figure in modern world history (for better or worse: thanks, Hans, an A-bomb), but famous among the general public? No. So who takes Bethe’s place in the top three?

How about Alex Haley, author of Roots?

Thinking on it, I decided yes; and that Haley even beats Nabokov for second place.

This ranking was affirmed by one of the first people I polled, who blithely rattled them off just that way: Sagan, Haley, Nabokov.

A number of people I asked were stuck after just Sagan. Of course, he was famous beyond ivory towers: he (like Haley) had big continued on page 7

I have lived in Enfield 28 years, and I support the Black Oak Wind Farm (BOWF). I have no financial interest, but I care deeply about the future of Enfield and the world we are leaving our children and grandchildren. BOWF will be located on Connecticut Hill, the best wind resource in Tompkins County, generating electricity without producing CO2, ashes, smoke or radioactive waste. The United States has more than 52,000 operating wind towers.

BOWF, originally proposed as a 20-tower farm, was reduced to seven wind towers to minimize impacts to neighbors. They have also chosen more expensive, low-noise windmill designs accomplished by studying the silent flight of owl wings.

The site is located on mostly

unimproved forest and agricultural land, which can remain in full production. All turbines will be located on privately owned land based on voluntary leases which have already given land-owners six years of income during a thorough process of environmental impact assessment. Even if no equipment is being placed on their land, all direct neighbors have been offered annual stipends of $500, equivalent to the return expected on about $9,000 invested in the wind farm.

Filling the Affordable Middle I s there any type of local development that generates as much passion and controversy as affordable housing?

There is strong consensus that housing affordability is a major problem in our community. Elected officials, business leaders, and residents all note the difficulty that both renters and owners have in finding homes they can afford. Every local government’s comprehensive plan cites the need for affordable housing as a high priority. It’s even seen as an impediment to economic development.

If there is such an urgent need for affordable housing, and this need is so widely recognized, why is nearly every affordable housing project vigorously opposed?

Paul Mazzarella There is no “right” to housing in the United States. It isn’t mentioned in the Constitution, and it’s not in the Bill of Rights. Many people would argue that housing is a purely private matter, and we have no civic responsibility to provide it.

I disagree. Housing affordability is a social justice issue, just like health care, civil rights, and education. Promoting diversity in race, income, and social status makes for better, stronger communities. If diversity is our goal, how can we promote it?

Communities reflect the economic and social changes that overtake them.

Here in Ithaca there were once wellpaying manufacturing jobs; they have been replaced by poorly-paying service jobs. Many people are burdened by high debt. The demand for student housing seems insatiable. On the flip side, every neighborhood in Ithaca is now a desirable place to live, and there is vigorous competition for nearly all of the homes that are available.

How do these changes contribute to our housing affordability problem?

Our housing is far more expensive than housing in surrounding counties, but it’s inexpensive compared to New York City or Boston. So is Ithaca housing really expensive? It depends on who you are.

Affordability is not just about cost; it’s about the relationship between income and cost. In Ithaca, many people with modest incomes struggle to buy or rent a home because they don’t earn enough money to afford the high prices. But housing is not a discretionary purchase. It is an essential part of living. The result is that people with decent but modest incomes either pay an unacceptably high proportion of their income for housing or are forced to move to remote places where housing costs are lower. We all lose when our teachers, plumbers, nurses, and cooks can’t afford to live in the community where they work.

We constantly see new housing being

built in Ithaca. With all of this development, why don’t the benefits trickle down to help lower-income people? An essential lesson of Economics 101 is that if the supply of housing increases, then prices should go down. Unfortunately, this ignores the other side of the equation: demand.

There is no doubt that our housing demand is high and continues to grow.

This is the result of many factors, including a growing population, a strong economy, and our reputation of being a great place to live. But the biggest factor driving housing demand is that there are far more households today than there used to be.

We’ve seen a large increase in the number of single-person households, including seniors, students, and young professionals.

Each one of those households increases the demand for housing. This has created far more competition for our available housing, causing prices to rise. This has affected all segments of the market, but not equally.

The costs of the lowest-priced homes have increased the most, putting the greatest pressure on lowerincome households.

Can we build our way out of this problem by producing more housing? So far, the evidence suggests that, even with all of the development we’ve seen, this approach has failed to keep pace with the rising demand. The development of student housing, a major factor in our housing market, has attracted most of the new investment by developers. This does little to satisfy the non-student demand.

There is a gaping hole in the middle of the market, where developers used to build starter homes or modestly priced apartments. And, unfortunately, far too few affordable units are being built.

Our whole community gains when we have housing policies that promote opportunities for people to live in, rather than be excluded from, the wonderful place that is Ithaca.

Opponents of affordable housing projects have made it clear that they don’t want new development that deviates from the existing pattern of single-family homes. They’ve also made it clear they don’t want suburban sprawl. In a city that is as built-out as Ithaca, this leaves very few places where new housing can be built. It’s unlikely that we can achieve the goal of promoting increased housing opportunity and more diversity without changing the form and density of housing in Ithaca.

New forms of housing might make our community look different tomorrow than it does today. But this isn’t unusual. The entire history of Ithaca has been characterized by nearly continual change. Rather than always seeing these changes as threats, we should view them as opportunities to make

the funding of a generous welfare state.

Sanders does propose a 2 percent payroll tax on employees to pay for his national health program. Two percent is equivalent to what my wife and I pay for our employers’ health insurance plans. But the Sanders plan would be worth many thousands of dollars to us, as there are to be no co-pays or deductibles of any kind.

Vision and dental care would be fully covered. (Medicare beneficiaries would no longer pay premiums). Under the Sanders proposal, long-term-care insurance, a very expensive product, would also be included at no charge. In short, we are promised a whole lot of something for less than nothing.

Sanders was asked in a primary debate why the effort in Vermont to enact a statewide single-payer health plan had to be abandoned. The senator responded that the questioner should ask the governor because he, Sanders, was a federal official.

Are we really supposed to believe that as a 50-year resident of Vermont, an elected official there since 1981, and a decades-long advocate of single-payer health systems, Sanders did not have any insight into why his beloved Vermont could not even launch the health care plan he advocates for the entire nation? Is it possible that Sanders did not wish to mention that Vermont officials gave up when they determined that even a payroll tax of 9.5 percent on workers and 11.5 percent on employers would not adequately fund a single-payer plan in the state?

The Sanders campaign has claimed to be leading a political revolution of new voters that will produce a political majority clamoring for the welfare state Bernie proposes. What Bernie has been doing is winning by huge margins in low-turnout caucuses that discriminate against voters who have to work at the appointed hour when the caucus is held and voters who are not comfortable with voting that is public rather than conducted by secret ballot.

To provide one example, Sanders won the Hawaii caucuses by a wide margin, with a turnout of 34,000. In 2014, an off-year election, when turnout is normally lower than in presidential years, 234,000 voters participated in the Hawaii Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate. The claim that these sweeping Sanders’ victories in contests with few voters represents an outpouring of new participants in the political system is either naïve or disingenuous.

I do not believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, or the Tooth Fairy. I will not be voting for Bernie Sanders in the New York Primary election. • T

presence on TV (popular “mini-series,” as they were called), showing the power of that medium (at least, once upon a time).

So does a candidate whom I chose to disqualify: Rod Serling, of The Twilight Zone.

One might well consider Serling.

Fame? His 50-year old shows are still broadcast today. Local? He taught at Ithaca College for years. He lived in Sheldrake. His company was called “Cayuga Productions.”

But he was born and raised in Binghamton. They are proud of him there.

And how much else have they got? So let them claim and keep him, with our blessings.

Ithaca, after all, has the astrophysicist who popularized the term “muddions and muddions.” We have the author who wrote Roots and ghosted The Autobiography of Malcolm X. We have the genius emigre who wrote the funniest, unsmuttiest book of smut ever. All three caught the attention of the world (Sagan, perhaps, if his strivings and dreams came true, other worlds, too).

And then, of course, there is Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

And for me, at least, Ricky Jay. If we were talking not about fame, but one-ofa-kind, quote-unquote genius, he might be a tough snoot for Ithacan #1. I bet Nabokov—that unparalleled lover of the high and low—would consent, with delight, to calling that race a draw. •

ithaca com This particular reader was surprised to find out that Charley Githler’s “Surrounded By Reality” column, published biweekly for at least the past 10 years, is actual satire and meant to be humorous. We will encourage Mr. Githler to be a little less convincing. This is a reaction to a ficitional interview with Rep. Tom Reed (March 30 issue): I didn’t realize that Ithaca.com was printing fictional satire these days but to his credit t Githler admits he is writing imaginary fiction and is not quoting the real Tom Reed. I could write a similar interview for Reed’s upcoming opponent but am not into writing fiction for the news media so will decline that Orwellian exercise. The term “Ithaca liberal”, when applied to Martha Robertson is, contrary to Githler, not a “smear” but a statement of fact.

She is both from Ithaca and she is clearly quite liberal. Indeed, at the sole debate between Robertson and Reed held in Elmira, an honest member of the audience carried a sign saying, “An extreme Ithaca liberal and proud of it.” Why then do liberals consider it a smear when they are properly labeled? Why aren’t they proud of it? Could be because they can’t sell it outside the cozy little Ithaca world.

What Boces Is Now A campus that changes to suit the community’s needs

B

ecause I grew up in New Jersey, the acronym BOCES was a foreign term to me when I moved to Tompkins County.

After doing some research, I came to learn what Tompkins Seneca Tioga Board of Cooperative Educational Services (TST BOCES) stands for—literally and physically. Historically, BOCES provided mostly shared services such as drivers’ education, guidance, special education, and some vocational education. When it opened on September 9, 1949, the TST BOCES staff consisted of a shared dental hygienist and a driving trainer, and it was housed on the second floor of a hangar at the airport.

The earliest school districts in TST BOCES were those in Tompkins County towns: Dryden, Groton, Trumansburg, and Newfield. Districts in Seneca County towns, Interlaken and Ovid and Romulus, were added shortly after. Ithaca joined in 1966, and Lansing joined in the 1960s, while Candor (in Tioga County) joined in the early 1970s. Throughout the years, the TST BOCES became known for vocational programming like welding.

Today TST BOCES’ campus is a bit bigger than the second floor of a hangar. Located at 555 Warren Road, the institution looks more like a small community college than it does a high school, having several buildings sprawled out among some green lawns.

Location is not the only thing that 8

has changed in 67 years. TST BOCES currently serves nearly 900 students, hundreds of adult students and employs more than 350 people. Its mission is to “identify, to propose, and to provide highquality services for children and for all the customers served which are economical and efficient in their operation, and which will complement the educational programs provided by the local school districts and other agencies in our region.”

TST BOCES carries out that mission through its student programs: adult education, career and technical education, and exceptional education (also known as special education). In addition, BOCES is home to school improvement services, health and safety programs, the central business office, special education school improvement specialists (SESIS), data analysis, a growing energy management service, expanded summer programs, and teacher in-service programs.

So it’s a little more than a school for a student to learn how to become a welder.

“This is not your grandfather’s BOCES,” superintendent Jeff Matteson said. “I think people always thought that this is a place you went if you weren’t going to be successful in the academic track..

“Higher education is obviously an option for students,” he added, “and a bachelor’s degree is still a ticket to a middle-class career. But there’s a misconception that BOCES isn’t a ticket p r i l

Providing ‘Multiple Pathways’

The component of TST BOCES that has evolved the most, and will continue to do so, is its Career and Technical Education program. For the last 21 years, director Tony DiLucci has led that department. A department that started with welding now provides classes like cosmetology, animal sciences, automotive technology, digital media, criminal justice, culinary arts, with other courses currently in development.

“Some of the more recent develops,” DiLucci explained, “include our computer technology program, which uses a nationally recognized robotics curriculum [and] our digital media program, which has incorporated not only media production, but also three-dimensional development and printing. Our animal science program here is relatively new.

That program is very popular and often leads to youngsters going off to college to pursue degrees as veterinarian technicians.

“On the horizon,” he continued, “we will be looking at a New Visions program in engineering that will hopefully be housed at Cornell University. We already have two New Visions programs which

are very vigorous one-year academic programs in health sciences [housed at Cayuga Medical Center] and life sciences [housed at Cornell University].”

Another development coming to TST BOCES for in fall 2016 will be the campus’s second greenhouse. Following the trend-conscious, successful precedent set by Tompkins Cortland County College (TC3) with its “Farm to Bistro” program in Dryden and at Coltivare, TST BOCES is hoping to give local high school students a similar experience.

With more than two decades of serving TST BOCES behind him, DiLucci is retiring this summer. He is proud of the institutions evolution during the last 21 years, and hopes the community comes to learn what TST BOCES is today, and not what it use to be.

“My belief is we are not here to create welders or auto technicians or nurses,” said DiLucci. “My feeling is we are here to help our component schools serve the needs of youngsters as they go to high school and ultimately graduate. We are here to help youngsters graduate from high school, but there’s an additive to that. And that is, while they are proceeding through high school, they’re getting the added value of developing career skills. So when they walk out the door after graduation, they have multiple pathways.

“Somewhere north of 70 percent of our completers go off to post-secondary education,” DiLucci noted, “which a lot of people don’t recognize. They think of BOCES as a trade school—particularly the career and tech center. They think of us as a place that trains kids how to do something. That’s true, but we also help kids graduate from high school with options. We want this community to realize that we have programs for people of all ability ranges. The notion that BOCES is only for students who are not capable of going off to college is really misnomer.

The NYS Connects project, however, has territorial limits. “Large parts of the county have been ruled off-limits,” said Bartosch. Those living where Time Warner Cable [TWC] has an obligation to provide rural broadband may be waiting a few more years. The cable giant is currently in merger negotiations with Comcast, which may change the game before TWC gets around to installing new systems.

“They have four years to accomplish their buildout,” Bartosch explained. “And, by then … Well, they wouldn’t be the first, if the merged corporation didn’t honor the commitments of the original. But this program will be done before we know what households TWC is going to cover.”

Meanwhile, the state is rapidly changing the specifications for Internet speed and hardware. New state standards require a speed of 25 megabytes per second (MBps) for download; the technology required by the 2013 grant is 6 MBps. Since Tompkins County’s build-out started in 2013 the equipment and speed is essentially grandfathered in. “In the next year we’ll be doing an upgrade to LTE,” said Bartosch. “That equipment will be capable of 25 MBps.” Looking ahead, the state has a new program coming, Broadband for All, with $500 million in grants for Internet connectivity, but “the costs are probably ten times more, due to the technology the state wants you to use.” Bartosch said it was unlikely that any small companies would be getting into that round of grants.

n 2012, Tompkins County received the go-ahead from New York State for a massive build-out of broadband service, aimed at connecting far-flung rural households and underserved communities to the Internet. The $2.2 million NYS Connects grant called for a private-public partnership; local internet pioneer Chuck Bartosch—who founded Clarity Connect, a local internet service, in 1995—signed on to the project as the private business partner. Local towns have paid part of the costs of poles, labor, and equipment, while Bartosch has put up the rest of the money in anticipation of reimbursement from the state. Since March 2013, when the project was launched, 5,702 households in Tompkins County have been connected.

Bartosch reports that the build-out is going well … “depending on what you mean by well.”

“With New York State, on average the wait for reimbursement is five months,” said Bartosch, adding that it is tricky for contractors to pay their people when they have to wait that long. “Nonetheless, everything’s going according to plan. We’re 85 percent done with the grant.”

With the current staff, we can do 30 households a month,” Bartosch said. “I’d like to add two to three people to the staff, but I don’t want to add people for three months and then fire them.”

Not every household in the county will be covered, however. “Within the grant territory, we have over 1,000 presigned up,” said Bartosch. “But at a rate of 30 households a month … you do the

TCCOG has also been working on renegotiating local municipalities’ contracts with TWC, many of which were originally signed ten or more years ago.

The municipalities have banded together to try to negotiate more favorable terms, but have fared little better in getting responses from the cable giant than the average customer. “Until the merger’s done, I don’t expect anything,” said Dryden town supervisor Jason Liefer. He pointed out that there is no competition for the big corporations like TWC or Verizon, therefore no pressure to negotiate or even provide better service. “What we should do is secure the rights of way for all the cell towers. That way if they’re not going to get it done, [we’re not locked out].”

Mr. Furman Goes To Washington

n Saturday, April 2, a group of people set out from Philadelphia’s Independence Hall on a march to Washington, D.C. with the aim of sitting in at the United States Capitol building for a week, starting this Saturday, or until members of Congress sign a pledge to protect voting rights, publicly fund elections, and vote for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s Citizen United decision.

On April 16 through 18, Democracy Awakens will also be in our nation’s capital, a three-day program of speeches, music, and workshops, including a talk from Ithaca College professor Sandra Steingraber, that will culminate that

following Monday with a day of action— civil disobedience—and advocacy.

Ben & Jerry’s is one of the sponsors behind Democracy Awakens, and so Jeff Furman, Ithaca resident and chairman of the Ben & Jerry’s board, will be in D.C. for the weekend.

“It’s been such a crucial struggle that’s been going on for hundreds of years, trying to get our democracy really improved,” Furman said, “and so I’ll be down there pushing this the best we can personally and in my role with the company.”

Beginning last year, the Ben & Jerry’s board decided that issues of racial equity and voting rights were the “right place to plug in” to act on the company’s social mission.

“I began to understand a year and a half ago, it’s been a struggle since the country first started,” Furman said. “The only people who could vote were white men with land, and it was a struggle for women, younger people, people of color, people who didn’t own land or have the money for a poll tax. We’ve taken a step back with the [Shelby County] decision that disempowered the Voting Rights Act. It’s crucial we get involved in pushing back who controls this process.”

“I wouldn’t say we have a real local issue in New York State,” Furman said, “but it’s an issue in many. We saw it in Arizona during the primary. It’s more and more difficult to vote; we don’t have a poll tax any longer, but we have what they call a ‘time tax.’ You stand in line for hours and hours.”

When Pain Won’t Go Away

The mysteries of Complex regional pain syndrome

C

hronic pain is pain that will not go away long after the initial injury.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is chronic pain that develops out of all proportion to the initial injury to an arm or a leg.

“There is some sort of damage to the way pain is transferred to the brain,” said Dr. Andrew Morpurgo, a physiatrist at the Cayuga Medical Center Center for Pain Management. “The normal things that stop pain don’t work. You get a distal loop that doesn’t get to the spinal cord.”

There are two types of CRPS. Type 1, which accounts for 90 percent of documented cases, according to the Mayo Clinic, is marked by nerve pain when no nerve damage was involved in the initial injury. Type 2 is a more explicable development of regional pain after damage to the nerves.

After a relatively minor or localized injury, perhaps only to a finger or toe, pain can spread to the entire rest of the limb.

The symptoms include either burning or a “pins and needles” sensation. The affected area can become very sensitive to touch (allodynia) and the limb can change temperature, color, and swell. This is due to abnormal microcirculation caused by damage to the nerves controlling blood flow and temperature, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) at NIH. According to the Mayo Clinic staff, “Many cases of complex regional pain syndrome occur after a forceful trauma to an arm or a leg, such as a crush injury, fracture or amputation. Other major and minor traumas — such as surgery, heart attacks, infections and even sprained ankles — also can lead to complex regional pain syndrome. Emotional stress may be a precipitating factor, as well.”

“My whole practice is now mainly treating chronic pain,” said naturopathic practitioner Dr. Deanna Hope Berman of Ithaca. She sees patients who have persistent pain because of chronic diseases, such as fibromyalia and Lyme disease, and also as a result of injuries.

“The nerves can be irritated and desensitized,” she said of chronic pain, “so the pain can feel worse.” She described a chronic immune response: the release of cortisol from the adrenal gland in response to stress. Continued high levels of cortisol have been shown to lengthen the healing period.

“Chronic pain is due to chronic inflammation,” said Berman, “and inflammation is simply the body’s natural response to injury ... The common issue in chronic pain and inflammation is that the

immune system’s response interferes with the natural processes involved in healing.

When the immune system responds in a normal way, it removes toxins from the injured area and flushes them out of the body.”

Berman said that the bottom line is that when you are looking at chronic pain you are looking at a symptom, not an underlying cause. Her job is to find and treat the underlying cause. She has found in her practice that the cause is an immune response that is usually stress-based.

To complement her own treatment, Berman sends patients for “prolotherapy,” a technique for treating chronic pain. It involves repeated injections of dextrose solution or other irritating substances into the joint, tendon, or painful tissue in order to provoke a regenerative tissue response.

Conventional medical treatments of CRPS include, according to Morpurgo, non-interventional (pills) and interventional (injections). At CMC they use re-purposed anti-seizure medications, anti-depressants that increase norepinephrine to try to turn off the looping signal in the limb with an enhanced signal from the brain. They turn to opioids only when the patient’s pain is extreme.

usan Rausch and Adrianna Hirtler met when Rausch held a winter solstice celebration at Camp Earth Connection in the Dryden hills.

“I hadn’t heard of Susan’s camp,” said Hirtler, “so I went up there out of curiosity.” The two women began talking and ways to get people out into the woods.

Hirtler has made a living for several years guiding people from cabin to cabin on walking tours in the Sierra Nevada of California. She thought that something like that could be done in this region.

“I thought of Camp Earth Connection as a potential facility [to serve the same purpose as the cabins in the Sierras],” she said.

The result of this collaboration is the Hill to Hollow Walk that is planned for April 22 and 23, Earth Day and the day after.

“I wanted to spark in people’s minds, the idea of walking without driving,” said Hirtler. “I hope to develop more opportunities for this type of thing.”

The Wind in Bomber Sails

IC senior Benji Parkes is savoring every moment

C

ollegiate baseball (and softball) players need to make a lot of onfield adjustments, but if you live in this part of the country, there are plenty of other adjustments to make as well.

Take for instance, the “Baseball Body Clock,” if you will. Players know they will start off their season in a gym, they will (if they are fortunate) pile into a bus or a plane and play the first part of their schedule in warmer weather, and they will return home and hope the weather is nice enough to get on the fields before their tans—and their skills—fade.

This year seemed almost too good to be true. Teams put in their gym time, headed out to Virginia, California, Florida or Arizona, and then came back to what almost seemed like a practical joke on Mother Nature’s part. We had skipped the nasty, cold, wet and muddy season, and we were loving every minute of it.

April Fool ...

Old Man Winter had been brushed back, but he got up and dusted himself off and dug in for another at-bat. In fact, for the first time in my 50-plus years around ball fields, I saw the umpires call time out during an Alfred University game, agree that a snow delay was in order, and pull the teams off the field until the snow squalls calmed down and visibility returned to normal.

The Ithaca College Bombers are back in town after three “spring trips.” They played in Virginia, California and Long Island (okay, two and a half), and they already have 18 games under their belts.

They opened their Empire 8 schedule with a doubleheader at Stevens, in Hoboken,

New Jersey, and the Bombers dropped Game One by a 9-3 tally.

While all games matter, conference play is the Holy Grail for colleges, and the Bombers really needed to salvage a split to make the bus ride home a little more tolerable, and they turned to senior Benji Parkes, a lefty from Lansing. Parkes tossed a complete game for the Bombers in his second win of the season, giving up

four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts.

The win apparently put some wind back in the Bombers’ sails, and they dug deep and pulled out a 4-3 extra inning win on Sunday. That made the bus ride even more tolerable.

I asked Benji about that turning point, and he said, “It was definitely a big game that we needed to win. Stevens is a big regional opponent, and we knew we’d see their ace on Sunday, so we were ready.”

I also asked if he felt any extra pressure, given the fact that an 0-2 conference start would create a big hole, and he said, “I wouldn’t say I felt any extra pressure, but I knew it was a big game, and I’d go after it.”

Given that Parkes is a senior, he is savoring every moment of what could be his last season of competitive baseball.

These players usually start off at about age 7 or 8, they do camps, clinics, they play in several leagues sometimes, and few play past college. Benji said, “I am definitely living in the present, enjoying it and putting everything on the line.” He added, “I threw 110 pitches on Saturday, and I could have come out after earlier, but I felt I had nothing to lose and I wanted to pitch the complete game. That has been my mindset since we got back from California.”

I also wanted to know how the wild weather swings factor in, and he said “It does take longer to warm up, and there are times when we occasionally go back inside and pitch off the fake mounds, but it’s okay. When some of these games get pushed back (due to weather), it actually gives us some extra rest.”

I wished Parkes the best as he closes out his college career, and having paid attention to many of these local kids for many years, I find great pleasure in covering their college careers. He thanked me for that, and sounding like a kid who grew up playing in the Northeast, he said, “I just go with the flow.” •

BOWF will also pay Enfield a seed capital grant of $45,000 for a new community building. As part of the project building permit, there will be funding in place for full decommissioning and returning the land to its original state if needed at any future date.

Following construction, both Connecticut Hill and Black Oak roads will be completely rebuilt. These roads have had maintenance deferred for years. From road building to construction labor, over $7 million will be spent using local labor sourced from New York firms, many based in Tompkins County. Two part-time local wind technicians will be hired and trained for ongoing operational oversight.

Another benefit for the Enfield community is BOWF’s contract with Clarity Connect. In addition to allowing real-time monitoring of BOWF to ensure safe operation, this has provided broadband Internet service to over 800 additional households.

I disagree with a vocal minority in opposition to wind power who suddenly want to kill the project despite its commitment to safe and minimally intrusive operation, the many benefits for Enfield and Tompkins County, and the essential need to build our capacity for renewable energy. Citing discredited pseudo-studies, they want to erase eight years of public meetings, existing town laws and agreements to impose excessive setback distances that cannot possibly be met. The extensive environmental impact studies have already been approved by the Enfield town board, which must now issue a building permit so that this project can be realized. My neighbors and I plan to continued on page 14

Ongoing Campaign to Raise $$ for Rink

M

arch 6 marked the final day of the ice skating season for Ithacans. So, things have quieted down for the Cass Park Ice Rink as it awaits the roof construction scheduled to begin this month. The next phase of renewal will entail a glass enclosure, which will hopefully find funding via the Cass Park Campaign, a Friends of the Ithaca Youth Bureau (FIYB) project.

Board member and full-time volunteer for independent fundraising Mary Grainger has been involved with a handful of previous capital campaigns in the community, such as Planned Parenthood and the Old Library Project.

Her main activity, she said, is serving as public relations committee chair of the Ithaca Public Education Initiative.

Having three daughters who all skated at the rink, and as a longtime board member of Tompkins Girls Hockey Association, Grainger said she is “a big fan of Cass Park and is committed to helping it move toward a campaign.” She said the priority of the Cass Park Campaign is to “raise money for the enclosure, and we’d give people three years to pay on a pledge.”

She reiterated that it is still a work in progress, but one thing she knows for sure is that “the city wants to see community support before they go further than the 2016 project.”

meetings with users and friends of Cass Park to spread the message of community support. Grainger is also in the process of building a campaign committee.

“Fundraising is about relationships, so we need a committee of people who love Cass Park and know other people who love Cass Park,” she said. “Friends ask friends.” Grainger will be focused on major donors while finding ways for the whole community to get involved as well.

“All of our messaging is going to be about the whole community,” she said, “which is going to inspire major donors as well as the $10 donors.”

Grainger said that gifts of all sizes are appreciated, and all donations are tax deductible. Every contribution counts, as Cass Park—the arena especially—sees use by people from all walks of life. “There are many groups and individuals who pay for facility use,” she said, “ranging from hockey teams to beginner skaters to roller derby players and summer campers.”

Construction for the enclosure could begin as early as next spring, 2017, and although this portion of the project has not yet been submitted, the designs are finalized. When Grainger saw the drawings, she said they took her breath away. “It’s so much nicer just by adding glass,” Grainger said. “I wasn’t expecting to be blown away by the beauty, but I was.”

Users are all too familiar with, but accustomed to, the frigid environment of Cass Park in the winter, and for people worried about the shift to an indoor facility, Grainger emphasized that the arena is not going to change too much.

The rink will be enclosed, but not heated.

“We’re not going to lose the tough-it-out conditions,” said Grainger. “This is not going to be a warm, cushy environment, but it’s going to be safer, healthier, and more spectator-friendly.”

Grainger said that there are a lot of benefits of an indoor ice rink. “What I want the community to know,” she said,

“is that the enclosure will provide dehumidified, conditioned air; ventilation; insulation; adaptations for climate change; a longer season for the ice surface; and improved conditions for spectators and skaters.”

With the addition of the enclosure, Grainger said that the goal is to ensure access for today’s users and for future generations. The project, she said, “will modernize, while keeping the historical value.

Imagine this: iconic character and traditional charm, with advantages of a beautiful, functional enclosure.”

As the Cass Park Campaign begins its launch, further information will be provided on the FIYB website and social media accounts. “It’s time,” Grainger said, “for the community at large to be supportive of the capital improvements needed for this facility. It’s time to show their commitment to the arena and all the user groups and purposes of the arena.”

Grainger wants to reassure users that the Cass Park ice rink will continue to serve the public as it has since 1972. “People are still going to be able to see the sunrise at an early morning practice,” she said. “Come next year, it’ll be 45 years of fun, fitness, and friendship.”

CSMA exhibition showcases environment

A

collaboration between Historic Ithaca and the Community School of Music and Arts, “A Sense of Place: Exploring Ithaca’s Built Environment,” does just that with an eclectic selection of work in painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and mosaic.

Approached by Historic Ithaca with the idea of doing a retrospective exhibition celebrating their 50th anniversary, CSMA executive director Robin Tropper-Herbel decided that it should be an art show rather than a historical one.

Up throughout the month of April (through April 29) the exhibit features between one and three pieces each by fortyone artists. (Following a tradition for open call shows at the school all entrants got work in.)

“Sense of Place” also includes charming ink drawings of local buildings by students at the Immaculate Conception School.

The CSMA, which itself occupies a historical building on 330 East State Street, has been at the epicenter of recent and ongoing downtown construction. Immediately to the west, is the “overbuild” of the Carey Building to add three additional floors. Across Aurora Street, at the east end of the Commons, is the reconstruction of Simeon’s restaurant (projected for completion this June) and the building of a new high-rise Marriott hotel (August).

Painting predominates in “Sense of Place,” as it tends to do in local shows. A prosaic realism is the most common key. The level of accomplishment varies greatly, even between works by the same artist.

The man of steel vs. the son of Gotham

I

character. Henry Cavill never takes any joy in the good he does. For the first time, we have a Superman who bears the act of doing good as a cosmic burden. (And if the whole crux of the movie hangs on the world’s perception of Superman, if I were him, I dunno … maybe I’d smile once in a while.)

I’ve seen Cavill now in three movies, this, Man of Steel and Guy Ritchie’s retroshrug remake of The Man From U.N.C.L.E, and now more than ever I am convinced that Cavill may be mercifully free from the ravages of charisma. In U.N.C.L.E, his notion of comedic timing was to imitate Hugo Weaving’s agent character from The Matrix. Here, he’s as much a stiff as Clark

saw Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with two pals from Ithaca Shakespeare, one who was seeing the film for the second time that night and kept nudging me every minute and saying “Eh? Eh? Eh?” The other guy got up and said, “I never want to see another movie with that ugly a color palette again.”

Like too many of the current crop of comic blockbusters, Zack Snyder’s pairing of the Bat dude and the alien is drenched in post-9/11 panic and collateral-damage porn. Picking up with the epic battle at the end of Man of Steel as seen from the POV of Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) racing around Metropolis, the story has Batman and Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) both obsessed with controlling Superman’s actions. Trouble is, Batman’s plans for super-sublimation seem kinda cool like most evil villain plots.

Luthor’s convoluted scheme makes no actual sense, and leads to the creation of a gigantic evil creature that looks Ben Afflek stars as Batman (Photo Provided) like a recycled Orc from a Hobbit movie. The whole last half hour is a snooze of an epic Kent as he is as the other guy. Awash in the Gaze

London band moves forward and sideways

oyaging through the lush, atmospheric, and sneakily noisy channels of a paradigm forged somewhere in between intersecting decades, the London-based shoegazing indie-rockers Yuck happily bask in this flicker of post-psychedelic vision. Easy on the ears, whilst enveloping hidden pockets of intricate flexibility, the band’s third album Stranger Things, released this past February, has a certain charming remiss about it. Recorded in guitarist and lead-singer Max Bloom’s parents’ London abode, the album harnesses the band’s trademark indistinct clamor, while pouring out a newfound fondness for straight pop: oval, toe-tapping, and sugary. I caught up with Bloom recently in anticipation of the band’s foray to Ithaca on Sunday, April 10.

Ithaca Times: You guys have recorded your albums in your parents’ house, including the new one. That’s pretty cool. It reminds me of the way Godflesh recorded their early albums. Now, is this bedroom a permanent bedroom studio, or do you come over and say, “It’s recording time; I have to rearrange the bedroom now?”

Max Bloom: No, I definitely wouldn’t call my bedroom a permanent studio. I don’t live at my parents’ house anymore, so my childhood bedroom is just completely empty. It doesn’t take long to set everything up, though; everything I use to record is very portable.

The most arduous thing is just getting all of our extremely heavy amps up the stairs.

I’m always slightly nervous that the house is going to fall down.

IT: When you guys approach a composition, are you collectively trying to write the best possible song (in Yuck’s vision of what the best possible Yuck song could be) you can write? Or is the process more innate and subconscious?

MB: I don’t think the two things are mutually exclusive. When I write a song, I usually write it in about 15 minutes, and I usually go with my immediate gut instinct on whether it sounds good or not. If a song is taking too long to write, then I’ll usually just abandon it. If it’s good, it will end up being used sooner or later.

IT: So you started out with a different lead singer than you have now, and you built a particular sound. He left, and you guys changed singers. How much does the dynamic shift in a case like that?

MB: When the band first started, I would typically write an instrumental,

maybe a vocal melody, and then Daniel would write the vocals and lyrics. When Daniel left, I started doing all the vocals and lyrics as well. Now the process feels slightly more collaborative; Mariko and Ed have more of an input in the composition aspect.

I can only see it as a positive thing, that we were able to develop and change the way we do things as a band.

IT: Talk about the new album. Do you guys feel pretty satisfied with it? I’ve read it’s heavier than past efforts. Is this the case?

And if so, any particular reasons for the new aggression?

MB: I feel more satisfied with this record than anything we’ve done previously.

I wouldn’t say it’s particularly heavier than what we’ve done in the past. All our albums are quite varied; there are some gentle

moments combined with some heavier songs. I guess there is an undertone of frustration and aggression, which probably just comes from what I’ve been going through personally for the last couple of years, which I kind of poured into this record.

IT: What’s the level of artistic freedom in the new record?

MB: There was complete artistic freedom with this record, which was why it was a lot more fun to make, but [the freedom was] definitely not without its own challenges. Sometimes it helps to have someone there just to say, “Hey, that was a good take. We don’t need to do anymore.”

Then again, it did feel quite refreshing to record an album completely on our own terms with no outside interference.

IT: The top 5 records you guys have been spinning in 2015/16?

MB: This is only my personal list, but I believe it goes something like this: You In Reverse by Built To Spill; Tim, The Replacements; The Trials of Van Occupanther, Midlake; First Issue, Public Image Ltd; and The Argument, Fugazi. • T

The Visual Wonder of Sound Ithaca Underground’s seventh Naked Noise

done; so it’s a great time for people to reach out. Dynamic, multi-instrumentalists and those who can bring a unique voice to the event, while being part of the collective, is what we’re aiming for - more so than artists standing out on their own, or musicians simply playing solos.

IT: Do you have a certain theme in mind when you create the event?

BC: There’s less of a theme than an attempt to create an aural and visual experience that forms a temporary world of its own, through drone and repetition.

omewhere in the abstraction of visual and auditory infusion, the senses develop a sort of deep-space beyond themselves—keenly becoming aware of the moment and reacting accordingly. Quick and predatory, they form a powerful intuition—previously unbeknownst to their being—and go forth, rearranging phenomena into defining shape. This is precisely where spectacular happens, musically and artistically.

Ithaca Underground’s annual Naked Noise event, a behemoth of exploratory sound and sight, exists exactly for such moments. The event sees a collection of local and regional musicians come together for one unique night. What happens next is anybody’s guess—yet everybody’s dream.

I talked to IU President of the Board Bubba Crumrine about some particulars of the event, and also got some insight from this year’s visual art installer, Nils Hoover.

The Poetry of a Woman’s Life Collection weaves through the lens

M

iddle-class women are at the center of everything in American society. We all have to deal with them in some part of our lives. They may be our mothers, our sisters, our wives or our partners. Or she may be our teacher or the woman behind the counter at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Pretty soon she may be our President.

So a book full of poetry from the perspective of a middle-class woman is of interest to us all. How do they see themselves? How do they see the people for whom they are responsible? What do they want from life? What did they want from life that they didn’t quite get? How does it feel to be a member of the “sandwich generation”?

Lynn Ciesielski’s poetry addresses all of these issues (and, of course, more). Some of this work addresses what are mockingly called “white people’s problems,” which is to say things that are treated as problems, but are merely unpleasant. The titular poem seems to be quite literally about a trip to Liverpool via Detroit that is trying because the narrator does not sleep well on planes.

(And no more.) Upon arrival her husband leads her “to a lounge where the barmaid / hawks Martinis and beers at 6 a.m. / I swallow my response with some coffee.”

Here is a sensibility that is more or less the polar opposite of, say, Charles Bukowski.

Ciesielski is a “woman of a certain age.”

In “The Shape of Things” she describes the liberation of entering her “third season.”

She has spent her second season buttoned down: … transforming me like rice paper into a lidded box, layers shaped, set, sprayed to announce out loud, Teacher.

Composed and stiff like my hair, I never swayed out of place even when the wind blew …

Now that she is older, she is happy to be able to wear her hair long and loose again.

Unlike the trip to Liverpool, we get the feeling here that her hair stands for a whole constellation of connected freedoms that go unmentioned.

It seems safe to conflate the narrator of these poems with Ciesielski herself, not always a safe bet with poets. She does not seem to be trying on masks or personas as some writers do. Each of these seems to be an honest, clear-eyed evaluation of some part of the cycle of a full life. Remarkably few of these poems are about the narrator herself. Rather they are about the people in her life and her relationship with them or to them.

Because of where she is in life, she has children and her children seem to have children, and she is also the child of elderly parents. “The Way the Cookie Crumbles” we hear a daughter’s concern mixed with

some pride when she sees her aging mother “raging against the dying of the light.”

She doesn’t rest.

Ciesielski does not often use enjambment as she does in the lines above, where she creates a tension and a slight imbalance by her choices as to where to break the sentences at the end of lines. This

nicely conveys the discomfort she feels in seeing her mother work at doing ordinary things like serving cookies and tea.

In a poem about her father, “Toward the End,” Ciesielski deploys a rare surreal image. After describing the strict rules her healthier mother kept for her diabetic father, she notices a change: But since the ants began licking the peonies clean of nectar she slowed her step in order to let him catch up.

After this her father is allowed to smoke cigars and drink whiskey sours on the porch with his sister.

Compare this with “Polarities,” a paean to an apparently long marriage that has settled into a pattern that includes both distance and intimacy. Here is a husband who loves thrash metal and doesn’t even transition into summer clothes until weeks after she does, but: when nearly at the breaking point I sigh, a hint of a request and you come to me knowing in an instant what I need.

No artifice, no melodrama; just life as it really is, when you’re paying attention. •

If it were up to me, I would have given him his own concurrent show here—as far as I know, none of these artists cover the local beat with anything like the perseverance that he does.

Notable local watercolorist Camille Doucet is showing a pair of pieces.

Unfortunately her image of the muchmissed Chapter House is a “giclee” reproduction—something that doesn’t belong in a formal exhibit of art. You can see how dull it looks in comparison to her superb Ivy League House Finch which shows a small red-accented bird perched on the upper right of an ornate stone Gothic window. Her ability to combine crisply linear outlining with fussy (in a good way) control of the paint is remarkable.

Painting and drawing create a feeling of space that is all the more compelling for being virtual. They set up a fictional environment: separate from our own but at the same time one that we can imagine entering. Traditional freestanding sculpture, in contrast fills space in a way that is emphatically literal—perfect for the figure but tricky for landscape.

So it’s unsurprising that only two artists here venture from the walls, neither of them with extraordinary results. Anne Auld’s house-shaped Clean House and Sweet Home combine woven newspaper strips with, respectively, glycerin and beeswax.

I’ve been accused of being ignorant and bigoted due to my limited sympathy for conceptual art. Still, the wit and absurdity of Chris Oliver’s Picnic Tables as Stacked on 3/29/16 at Alex Haley Municipal Pool fails to evade me entirely. The piece is composed of countless small picnic tables built of unfinished pinewood. All jumbled up, they form a wall: approximately human in height and crossing a good portion of the lobby gallery.

It is interesting to imagine what local printer-photographer Craig Mains might do with the image in one of his monotypes—it seems made for his blend of Pop-like iconic wit and painterly invention.

Evan Williams’ photo sequence Surrounded by Reality also takes a conceptual approach. It is composed of four black-and-white images, printed on foam boards and arranged in a square.

Featuring gritty winter street scenes in striking tonal variations, in the center of each is a white rectangular “marker” designating the city’s northwest, southeast, northeast, and southwest boundaries.

The piece slyly recalls Cornell’s history as the 1969 Earth Art exhibit site—a pioneering presentation of contemporary environmental sculpture.

The bulk of photography here is more traditional, with varying results.

Signs of Ithaca 1 and 3 by Nicole Belott are the most memorable photographs here.

Like the work of Stuart Davis and other American Cubist painters of the early 20thcentury, it finds a compelling abstraction

in the urban commercial vernacular. The former is a close-up of the memorable cord plug and cursive Thayer Appliance sign while the latter shows the nearby Angelo Cleaners.

I’m not a huge fan of local artist Ryan McGuire, whose multi-media work tends to embrace pop culture kitschiness diametrically opposed to the subtlety and nuance that I most value. But his large photograph here, Cleaning Conundrum is quite good, bringing in an assertive performance-art sensibility that forms another aspect of his work. The only interior scene here, we see a woman in the Fall Creek laundromat—or rather her kicking legs, as she has plunged her upper body into a clothes dryer: the kind with a round glass front.

Suffused with an early evening light, Yvette Rubio’s Angels and Monsters is another memorable photo. In an upward tilting view, we see the indecorous east façade of the State Theatre from half a block away on Cayuga. The concrete is tinged copper and a fire escape leads down from the unused looking door. On the door and again to its right, a pair of drawn figures: the character known as the Ithaca Graffiti Monster. Filling the right of our foreground view is Cherry Rahn’s humorous bronze statue Businessman in Touch with Nature, which depicts a suitclad figure inexplicably sporting wings.

The picture offers an unexpected view on something many of us might pass by every day—in this case including another work of art.

Elizabeth Boheim’s digital photo Waiting on Seneca offers a frontal view of the south façade of the Seneca Street parking garage. The image is mostly black-and-white, save for the center foreground, which is saturated with color.

Syracuse artist Brandon Lazore’s mural, a celebration of the area’s Native American heritage, is the focus—with color also leaking out to emphasize some bystanders and the vines above.

I find the piece and its central metaphor cloying and inapt—much as I do too much of Ithaca’s vaunted mural renaissance. The garage itself, though no architectural masterpiece, serves a utilitarian function that has nothing to do with the types of imagery being used to decorate it. Covering the building with aesthetically mediocre tokens of “other” cultures feels false—neither a compelling tribute to these cultures or a meaningful enhancement to everyday city life.

I’ve already commented on the uneven quality of the exhibit—practically a given for group shows at the CSMA. Theme-wise, “Sense of Place” is fairly restricted as well with the bulk of work focusing on the familiar and readily legible aspects of the local environment.

It would have been interesting to see more work showing the human figure in interaction with the environment. Given the chaos of all the recent and ongoing construction downtown, it would have also been worthwhile seeing some work that explored the city—a tiny town no longer— in its tumult and growth. •

ccording to Evan Friedell, Jimkata is playing some of their best shows ever on their spring 2016 tour, which makes a hometown stop at The Haunt this Friday, April 8.

“I’m not just saying that because this is an interview,” Friedell said. “We recently switched to a three-piece and we were excited but unsure how that would go. We’re playing a little tighter now.”

That Jimkata is playing with chemistry is no surprise: Friedell, guitarist Aaron Gorsch, and drummer Packy Lunn have known each other since middle school in Oneonta and formed the band at Ithaca College in 2005. Their fifth album, In Motion, dropped in February.

They went into the studio “during a really busy time” in the spring of 2015, Friedell said, while they were on tour and figuring out the next configuration of the band; Stephen Learson, their most recent bass player who was touring with them in spring 2015, had other ongoing projects and couldn’t commit completely to Jimkata.

The band spent last fall rehearsing, rather than touring. Now they’re back on the road, with Cambridge, Mass. and Brooklyn dates sandwiched around their stop at The Haunt this weekend, and a westward swing to Colorado scheduled to begin in Cleveland next week.

“You get to know so many people across the country touring, it feels like a family you’ve built,” Friedell said. An autumn at home allowed Jimkata to tune up their leaner lineup, with Gorsch playing more left-hand bass on the guitar and Lunn operating sequencers and bass synths from behind his set.

The touring break also allowed Jimkata the time to make their first music video last fall, for the song “Wild Ride.”
