5 Opioid Deaths Since April 12

P

eople gathered at the park on Wood Street on the evening of May 12 to remember and honor the life of Antwan “Skeet” Brooks.

Family and friends formed a circle on the basketball court around a photograph of Brooks, lit candles, and shared memories, prayer, and song. About 200 had gathered by the end of the hour, with children running around the outside of the circle.

Many people wore T-shirts printed with Brooks’ picture and the tag #longliveskeet, and many shouted out “Long live Skeet!” as they released red balloons into the sky at the vigil’s end.

Brooks, 25, died on the morning of May 8 from a drug overdose. He was a member of the Ithaca High class of 2008, where he played basketball and football.

Brooks is one of several area residents to die of an opioid-related overdose in recent weeks.

Based on conversation around town with service providers and street people, obituaries, and online talk, this reporter has collected reports of at least five people having died of overdoses since April 12.

The Ithaca Police Department issued a public service announcement on April 21 reporting that they had responded to “several calls for service” from people “suspected” of overdosing on heroin and were looking into the possibility there was a particularly strong shipment on the market.

The increased number of reports from law enforcement and major media outlets across the Northeast suggests that the synthetic opioid fentanyl is now prevalent on the street.

Perhaps the most convincing report of this trend so far comes from New Hampshire’s state health department, where in 2015, of 365 confirmed opioid-related deaths, 151 were from fentanyl alone and 74 were from fentanyl and other drugs, excluding heroin. According to Naroconon, “Fentanyl … comes as a small piece of film that can be dissolved under the tongue and a pill meant to be lodged inside the cheek. In hospital settings, fentanyl can be injected. For the individual abusing the drug outside a hospital, this is highly dangerous, as the difference between a therapeutic dose and a deadly dose is very small.”

Chicken Keepers May Go Legit in Pilot Prog.

Significant time has been spent in committee on the proposed chicken ordinance since it first hit agendas in July 2015. Noisy fowl like roosters and guinea hens were an early concern, and it was quickly clear they would be outlawed.

In an early draft of the ordinance put out last September, Alderperson Cynthia Brock (D-1st) was particularly dubious

t their June 1 meeting, Common Council will have to decide whether chickens can legally roost in Ithaca’s backyards.

At their May 11 meeting, the Planning and Economic Development Committee passed a pilot program legalizing limited backyard chicken-keeping and sent it onto council for a vote.

The two-year pilot program will allow up to 20 residences in the city to keep chickens, with a limit of four hens per 3,000 square foot (0.07 acres) lot.

“We’ve been talking about this for years,” Alderperson Seph Murtagh (D-2nd) said after the 4-1 vote to lay the question before full council. “I don’t think this has ever gotten out of committee before.”

he National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) held a weeklong hearing in Ithaca from May 2 through May 6.

The hearings were held to investigate allegations that Cayuga Medical Center (CMC) had disciplined two nurses for being involved in union organizing efforts, a campaign which began in earnest in May 2015.

NLRB field attorney Jessica Noto argued in her opening statement on May 2 that CMC employees were “disciplined for protected and concerted activity” aimed at forming a union. The specific allegations that Noto set out to prove involved cases of discipline against nurses Anne Marshall and Scott Marsland, alleged to be discriminatory, and that CMC managers had engaged in discriminatory practices against protected activity—by taking down flyers on public bulletin boards and discouraging tabling in the cafeteria.

In his opening statement on May 4, CMC attorney Raymond Pascucci, argued that the “unfounded assertions” alleged by nurses are a “myth propagated to attract to attract support for the organizing campaign.”

The first witness that Noto called was CMC vice president of human relations Alan Pedersen, who admitted to telling Marshall and Marsland on two separate occasions that they should not be tabling with union materials in the cafeteria.

After the second time, Pedersen said he spoke with his attorney and afterwards “I nor anyone else in hospital ever challenged that again,” as the organizing campaign continued to put out literature in the cafeteria.

The unionizing campaign has ambitions to organize more than the approximately 300 nurses at CMC. There are more than 1,300 employees at the medical center. Marshall said during her testimony that organizers decided to work with Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1199, Health Care Workers East, because they “could sign other departments besides the nurses … we could literally get the whole hospital on board.”

Another point of contention was whether CMC administrators had also taken down union materials from public bulletin boards and break-room spaces where other, non-work materials, like salsa dancing lessons or Girl Scout cookie orders were regularly posted. There was also a newspaper article posted about median rates of pay in the region—on which nurses wrote down their salaries and years of experience—that was up for a few days before it was taken down.

specifically alleged that they were disciplined in an unfair way because of their union activity. In Marshall’s case, she was suspended, demoted from charge nurse and docked a point on her annual evaluation, after a disputed incident on June 26, 2015, in which hospital administrators said she had lied about making phone calls to fill holes in the schedule.

“I told them I did make phone calls, but did not call every single person on the list,” Marshall testified.

Linda Krumb, assistant vice president of patient services, testified that the hospital’s discipline was because Marshall was “untruthful,” a violation of the nurses’ code of conduct.

In Marsland’s case, he was issued a verbal warning after speaking in a morning meeting about his unwillingness to take a break if another, less experienced nurse, was to tend to his patients. Another

ER nurse testified that this was a frequent topic of conversation.

Marsland’s discipline was “specifically about his behavior tearing down an employee in front of a group of people,” emergency department director Amy Mathews testified.

Testimony in this case at the Tompkins County Human Services Annex, 214 W. State St., will resume on Tuesday, May 24, according to Paul Murphy of the NLRB’s regional office in Buffalo, with the “hope” that it will be completed that day.

NLRB administrative law judge David I. Goldman will issue a decision in the case whether the allegations against CMC have merit and if it should be ordered to make any relief, like restoring lost pay or positions; the decision will likely take at least a couple months to come down.

Monika Roth of CCE said on May 11 that her people should be able to handle helping out with advice and even connecting chickens with new homes.

“It’s not something new around the country,” Roth said. “Ithaca’s not at the forefront here, believe it or not, but we have lots of communities around the country that have chicken ordinances in very urban areas. It’s certainly a great way to get protein, it’s not that expensive to raise a chicken and it really does help a family out.”

Josephine Martell (D-5th), who does academic work on animal welfare issues and has led the effort to refine this legislation, said she finds the reasons for allowing slaughtering to be valid.

“They are a food animal, and they’re perceived by most of the population as such,” Martell said. “From an animal welfare perspective, I think it’s actually more humane to kill them on site. It’s probably less stressful, to be killed by

Sigler Makes Run at State Senate Seat

L

egislator Mike Sigler (R-Lansing) has decided to throw his hat in the ring.

The two-term county legislator—who snagged a quick 15 minutes of fame on the Humans of New York website last fall, when he was photographed wearing a brown top hat —is making a bid for the state senate seat currently held by Sen. Michael Nozzolio (R-Fayette). Prospecttive candidates must file petitions of more than 1250 signatures by July 14; if there are two or more candidates, that will lead to a Republican primary on Sept. 13.

Nozzolio, a Republican, has announced plans to retire instead of seeking reelection after the end of his current two-year term representing the GOP-leaning 54th District.

Citing the demands of recovering from open-heart surgery—completed in April— Nozzolio made his announcement back in February, leaving the field wide open for the 2016 elections. As the campaign announcements began rolling in, Sigler decided the time was ripe for a run.

“The reason I never really thought about running for higher office before is that we’re the only town from Tompkins [County] in this district,” he explained.

“Granted, Lansing is a pretty sizable town, but it’s still only three percent of the whole district. Now, with that said, it’s such a fractured field. Everybody was waiting to see if one of the assemblymen wanted to run, and they didn’t, so now it’s an open field.” Despite speculation that they’d enter the race, Assemblyman Bob Oaks (R-Macedon) and Assemblyman Gary Finch (R-Springport), both members of the lower house, opted to seek reelection in their current seats instead.

Though he started his career in broadcast journalism after earning a degree from Columbia Journalism School, Sigler switched to politics when he ran for state assembly in 2002. At the time, he was living in Ithaca and went up against Democrat Barbara Lifton in the left-leaning assembly district that includes Tompkins and Cortland counties.

“I quit my job and went door-to-door and knocked on 10,000 doors,” he said. He won over the more conservative Cortland County voters, but was less persuasive for the voters in his home county. He pulled in 42 percent of the vote overall, but learned a lot about campaigning in the process.

“We had to run a real campaign,” he said. “For the senate, it’s a bigger district— six counties instead of two—but at least I have some kind of scale.” The 54th Senate District stretches all the way up to Lake Ontario and includes all of Seneca and Wayne counties and parts of Tompkins, Cayuga, Ontario, and Monroe counties, a considerably larger geographic area than

After Lifton won the assembly seat—a position she still occupies—Sigler made a career change and went into advertising. He moved up to Lansing and won a four-year term on the county legislature beginning in 2006. He narrowly lost a bid for reelection in 2010, losing out to Democrat Pat Pryor—but he regained his seat for the 2014 to 2017 term.

Now, he’s using some of what he’s learned on the county legislature to shape his senate platform. For one, he wants to tackle unfunded mandates from the state.

“If we were just at the state level to take over Medicaid, that would make such a huge difference to the towns and the county,” he said. More generally, he’d like to rein in state spending. “We’re spending money like we’re venture capitalists but we’re not —we’re the state. We build roads and educate children. Solar power is wonderful, but should the state be spending $750 million on a solar power plant?”

He’s also unhappy with the state’s current stance on gun control. “I oppose the SAFE Act,” he said. “It seems like they put the SAFE Act in and made a bunch of gun owners who’ve never done anything wrong into criminals overnight.”

While gun control is a debate often divided along party lines, Sigler also hopes to tackle an issue that’s becoming more bipartisan: the opioid epidemic. “Harm reduction is certainly something I’d like to explore more at the state level. It seems that people really don’t give up something until they decide to give it up,” he said. “So I guess the question is: How do we wake people up? For right now, I just want harm reduction. I just want people not to die.”

Sigler will be going up against a broad field that includes Lyons Town Supervisor Brian Manktelow and Webster Republican Committee member John Tubridy. On the other side of the aisle, Rose Town Supervisor Kenan Baldridge has already garnered support from local Democratic chairs in his race for state office. •

ocal activists are calling on representatives in the state legislature to support a constitutional amendment that would overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United v. FEC decision that allows unlimited spending on elections by nonprofit corporations.

For activists in Ithaca, their focus has been convincing state Sen. Tom O’Mara (R-Big Flats) to sign onto a letter supporting a constitutional amendment; currently half of New York’s 62 state senators have expressed their approval, and the Democratic-controlled Assembly has a clear majority in support of the measure. No resolution will be passed by either house, but the hope from activists is to make New York the 17th state with a clear majority in its legislature for a constitutional amendment.

“The U.S Senate took a vote on amendment in November two years ago, and in hearings and discussions it came up how many states and cities have called for a constitutional amendment,” said Jonah Minkhoff-Zern, co-director of notfor-profit advocacy organization Public Citizen’s “Democracy is Sen. Tom O’Mara for People” campaign.

“That was significant to them—it’s become such a mass movement, with five million signatures for an amendment.”

The New York Democrats’ letter in support of an amendment asks “that artificial entities created by the laws of any State, the United States, or any foreign state are not entitled to the same rights and protections as natural persons under the Constitution and that (2) assures the power of the federal, state, and local governments to limit, regulate, and require full source disclosure of all money spent to influence elections.”

In a letter circulated by state Sen. Phil Boyle (R-Bay Shore), the demand is similar with some different rhetoric, focusing more on unions and Hillary Clinton’s campaign. “The evidence is clear,” Boyle’s letter reads. “Spending by unions, ‘super PACs,’ trade associations, and 501c(4) organizations drove federal election spending to more than $6 billion in the 2012 presidential contest.

Helping One Student at a Time A Time to Scatter Stones L I ike this year’s daffodils laid low by late spring snow, many Ithaca children start school with great disadvantages. While their ability to blossom lies within, often conditions in their young lives don’t support their academic growth. That’s where Golden Opportunity (GO), a tutoring program for at-risk kids, comes in to fill a gap that the school district cannot. With so much already on their plates, teachers have little time to work extensively with these children who need much special help.

That was the vision behind the founding of GO some years ago.

My 9-year-old tutee is a smart child but, until recently, he didn’t believe it. He explained that several men in his mom’s life told him he was stupid, and he grew up believing it. When I’d tell him he was a smart kid, he folded his arms belligerently and said, “No, I’m not. I’m stupid.” This went on for almost two years. That core belief kept him from doing well in school.

His acting out in behavioral ways to get attention led him to the principal’s office.

His antics distracted classmates, annoyed teachers and distanced him from other kids. Other children avoided him, so his isolation worsened.

In third grade his sensitive teacher recommended him to the GO tutoring program. Matthew has been my student for two years and he is a delight—and sometimes frustrating. He is an excellent reader and loves to write stories— especially fiction tales—and they are quite creative. He is aware that he is

punctuation phobic and writes in James Joyce’s stream-of-consciousness style.

He’s funny. He’s kind. I’ve often seen him help other classmates with tasks—even something as simple as picking up an item they dropped. He’s won two CHES awards for his participation. Matt’s a good smart kid without the advantages most of his Cayuga Heights Elementary School peers have.

This past year, with the help of GO tutoring and Connor Megivern, his most supportive fourth grade teacher, he’s taken many steps to move ahead— socially, emotionally and academically.

I am especially proud of his behavioral adjustments. I believe that low self-esteem and fear were at the root of many of Matt’s problems. Like most of the children GO tutors work with, he knows he has one adult friend whom he can count on to be there for him on a one-on-one basis, two times each week and who does many special things with him outside of school.

Although he often tests it, Matthew understands his responsibility in our partnership also. He’s aware that when we see a Kidd’s Stuff play at the Hangar Theatre, it means he writes a review— before we head out for the ice cream treat. A visit to the Museum of the Earth resulted in his writing a long story that became a bound-book format that his school librarian put in his system. When he showed classmates his A Journey to

thaca Notes,” as this column is called, is a simple name, reflecting a simple idea: to note varied aspects of this town, its attributes and idiosyncrasies.

One does that (simply) by noting activities happening here, character developed here, and people living here.

It’s a pleasant enterprise, mostly, except for one hitch about people, that they die.

Noteworthy as it may be, I don’t like writing about death, and generally won’t.

As a subject, it’s too easy. It doesn’t require any creativity, imagination, or intellect. It’s just there. It can’t be amended or lightened or sharpened or dulled. It can’t be changed.

It’s too prevalent, especially as one ages.

This is a bi-weekly column. When you’re past middle age, good people die more than bi-weekly.

Despite these objections, I find myself writing notices of death recently. It hasn’t been automatic.

First, this year, it was David Bowie. I decided to write about him because he was a particularly noteworthy musician, creative force, and social pioneer, and in Ithaca such things matter. So I wrote not an obituary, per se, but a reflection on what his life and work meant to a community such as ours.

In April I wrote of the death of Teresa Grady. Teresa was also a social pioneer (a much different kind, of course), as well as a political and religious one, and the matriarch of a famous Ithacan family of jailbird peacemongers, and deserved much more notice than I (or anyone) could give.

So, again, I wrote not a death notice, but a life notice. I wrote about Teresa in terms of Women’s History Month, which had just passed, and included a personal story I thought people should know.

And, so, now: Daniel Berrigan, another enormously diminishing death. So I will break my rule one more time, or bend it, and hope it will be the last for a while.

Father Berrigan, a Jesuit, was among the most prominent and influential activists against the war in Vietnam. He died two

weeks after Teresa Grady. They were colleagues and friends. (Teresa named her youngest child Teresa Berrigan Grady.)

Dan was tried, convicted, and jailed for destroying military records in 1968. A few years later, Teresa’s husband John was part of a group arrested for similar actions.

John’s group was exonerated. Perhaps by then thoughts were changing about criminality and the war, due in part to these very challenges, and others like them.

Dan was assistant director of Cornell United Religious Work from 1966 to 1970.

His crucial peacemaking legacies are legion throughout the world today. But he had a small, personal one at Anabel Taylor Hall for a while.

Anabel Taylor is home to CURW, exclusively. It’s a magnificent building next to the law school.

For all its splendor, it was a secluded building in Dan’s time, with no real gathering place inside. Dan felt one was needed for activists on a torn and turbulent campus. So he emptied a small library and created the Commons Coffeehouse.

It was a lively place. It had the feel of a Greenwich Village cafe. It didn’t feel religious or even overtly political, although the name itself gave its intentions away.

It was a thorn in Cornell’s side in more ways than one. Cornell Dining hated it because it was not under its auspices, and fought tirelessly—eventually successfully— to take it over. The first thing to go was the name.

I has a work-study job there in the late ‘70s, before the change. I met Dan years later and we talked of nothing but the Commons. I thanked him for providing me with a good place to work, and Ithaca with espresso. I reminded him that the Commons was the only place in town you could get espresso then. It had a big, beautiful bronze machine from Milan.

He laughed, I guess to realize how varied his legacy was—culinarily and comically, this time. •

YourOPINIONS In the last 60 years, the largest development project on South Hill was the relocation of Ithaca College (IC) from downtown Ithaca to its present location atop South Hill, directly across State Route 96B from the proposed Chain Works District project. The relocation of the IC campus to South Hill happened without the benefit of a draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement (dGEIS). This should serve as a good example of why dGEIS documents are important when assessing the impact large development have on climate change.

consumption is by far the most pressing issue facing our environment and dGEIS should address this issue directly. For instance, IC is currently reevaluating its fossil-fuel consumption to correspond with the 2009 Ithaca College Climate Action Plan (ICCAP), which calls for IC to be fossil-fuel free by 2050. New buildings built today on the IC campus are required to have a dGEIS and hopefully these documents will be sensitive to the ICCAP. The Chain Works District (CWD) continued on page 7

the Past listed in Joe’s library, he burst with pride. After a recent tour to visit BOCES to dispel a myth that exists at West Village about the school being for “dumb kids,” he is working on his second book about his experience. Director of Career and Technical Education Tony DiLucci helped him turn that notion around with an extensive tour of the BOCES campus.

Now, Matt thinks he might want to go there to study culinary arts and open his own restaurant someday. Of course, these extra out of the classroom projects take a lot of our time, but the payoff is well worth it in the changes we see in our GO students.

has the potential to become the largest consumer of fossil fuels on South Hill within the next 10 to 15 years. For this reason I believe the CWD developer, Unchained Properties (UP), should work cooperatively with IC and other large energy consumers on South Hill to create a Climate Action Plan (CAP) that commits all parties to the common goal of becoming fossil-fuel free by 2050 or before.

I realize this is thinking outside the dGEIS box, but adding this suggestion to the final Generic Environmental Impact Statement (fGEIS) for the CWD project might be the incentive needed to get South Hill stakeholders cooperating to create a community based CAP for the entire South Hill community.

In my capacity as the president of the South Hill Civic Association (SHCA) and a founding member of Ithaca Community Energy (ICE), I recently encouraged facility management from IC, UP and the South Hill Business Campus (SHBC) to

be at par with the their peers, has given me much joy. Mentoring these children who need to learn social skills and improve their academic achievement has become a high point of my retirement--a “golden opportunity” for me, and sixty other GO tutors.

Community microgrids have the potential to seriously reduce fossilfuel consumption because they generated energy within the community, which is most likely to come from renewable energy sources. All three parties seemed to be genuinely interested in pursuing the concept of a South Hill community microgrid.

Mitigating climate change should be included in Ithaca’s fGEIS for the Chain Works District if, for no other reason, its sheer size. One way this could be accomplished is to include in the fGEIS for the CWD that monthly meetings be held within the South Hill community to develop a CAP for South Hill. The SHCA pledges to continue working with the entire South Hill community on issues related to fossil fuel reduction and we hope that the fGEIS for the CWD will help us accomplish our goal.

“O’Mara came to a town hall in Ithaca [in 2015] and publicly said he was in favor of an amendment, if that was going to be the only way take care of things,” said Kris Hodges, who’s active in the Citizens United fight. “He said his big concern is unions, that they’re not getting called out enough on this.”

Accordings to Hodges, about six activists met with O’Mara at the end of 2015, at which time the state senator said he saw the letter from Boyle “going nowhere.”

Requests to O’Mara’s office for a comment on this issue received no substantive response. Sen. James L. Seward (R-Oneonta) of the 51st District, which includes Groton, Caroline, and Dryden, did not sign onto any letter, according to his office, and a request for comment to Sen. Michael Nozzolio, who is retiring from his 54th District seat, which includes Lansing, also went unanswered.

Leslie Danks Burke, an Ithaca attorney and Democrat who is running against O’Mara this autumn, said that she believes the Citizens United decision to be “unconstitutional.”

“I wholeheartedly disagree with it. I agree with Ruth Bader Ginsberg in her dissent Lesley Danks Burke in that opinion,” Danks Burke said. “It disappoints me we would have to take the step of amending the constitution in order to overturn something that was wrongly decided in the first place. That said, it may be the only option we’ve got and yes, I stand behind [an amendment].”

Danks Burke also mentioned that she would like to see the so-called “LLC loophole” overturned; that allows “unlimited dark money” to come from limited liability companies into state campaigns.

Public Citizen’s efforts to sign on legislators are “all about building a movement right now,” Minkhoff-Zern said. “We need two-thirds of Congress and three-fourths of the states to ratify it.”

Organizing efforts might also inspire the Supreme Court to revisit the Citizens United decision if there is an appeal of a case that concerns it, Minkhoff-Zern said.

“We’ve used the term ‘pipe dream to mainstream,’ this idea of a constitutional amendment,” Minkhoff-Zern, who’s been working on this campaign for nearly five years, said. “When it started we didn’t think the campaign would go on for more than year or two. We’ve been surprised by how successful it’s become. We’ve educated the populace in the United States about Citizens United … people know what it is and they know they don’t like it.”

matching campaign funds in New York City council elections, compared to those competing in races for legislature seats in Albany, shows clearly that matching funds bring more diversity into politics.

“The money is coming from a really broad sector of New York to fund these campaigns,” Minkhoff-Zern said. “In comparison, the people running for office at state level without matching funds, you’re seeing funding comes from a very small pool of white wealthy donors and the people running are much more likely to be a white male.”

Hodges is hopeful that legislators here and elsewhere will start signing onto the campaign for a constitutional amendment on money in politics.

“It seems the legislatures are the ones dragging their little old feet,” Hodges said.

“Of course, they don’t want to bite the hand that feeds them. I’m really hoping this election cycle will start to shake some of these people up a little bit.”

The whole point of picking a hard sciences STEM education path is picking a course of study that will be more likely to give you a decent return on your education investment No ones denying that the arts don’t make you a more wellrounded person, but arts majors are a dime a dozen and therefore a poorer choice to justify an investment of over $200,000 in tuition room and board at either of the major local schools. They’re called starving artists for a reason.The only people who seem to do well with liberal arts degrees are people who wind up running ( not working at, but running) one of the multitude of “non-profits”. maybe that’s why we HAVE so many non-profit organizations ... a whole bunch of liberal arts majors who realized they chose a degree program poorly but still wanted a big personal payday – Franklin’s Ghost Editor’s note: Evans was not actually suggesting that retaining arts in the curriculum would produce people with liberal arts degrees.

Ambassadors rock the State

F

or 11 weeks last year, from June through September, the X Ambassadors song “Renegades” topped the Alternative Songs charts, making it a bona fide Song of the Summer.

The distinction was well justified by the song’s four-chord elegance, ascending refrain, and vibe of youthful immunity.

Watch the official video, though, and Ithacans will see that the song is, in a sense, about them. Interspersed with footage of athletes with disabilities ranging from blindness to paraplegia, the band members take a drive on familiar roads: by that picturesque red barn on Cascadilla Boulevard, by Ithaca Falls, then turning toward Fall Creek as it flows to the lake, and finally to the State Theatre.

The band, based in Brooklyn but in the process now of relocating to Los Angeles, has accumulated numerous major successes besides the hit “Renegades.”

Two summers ago, its thumping, grittedteeth anthem “Jungle,” performed with the British musician Jamie N Commons and remixed by the hip-hop kingmaker Jay Z, was featured in a promotional video for the World Cup. Since the 2015 release of its first fulllength album, VHS, the band has appeared on Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and The Today Show. The lead singer, Sam Harris, who also plays guitar and saxophone, has a co-writing credit on Rihanna’s 2015 single “American Oxygen” and sang the national anthem this spring 8

Sam and Casey grew up in a house off Danby Road, about three miles from downtown, and Sam befriended the band’s eventual guitarist, Noah Feldshuh, at Belle Sherman Elementary School’s kindergarten orientation. Years later, while attending the New School in New York together, Sam and Noah met the band’s fourth member, drummer Adam Levin, who grew up in Los Angeles. At the time, Casey was studying at the School of Piano Technology for the Blind in Vancouver, Washington; he has Senior-Loken syndrome, a genetic condition that affects both his vision and his kidneys, and he would soon join the others in New York.

The band’s three Ithaca members well represent the city’s academic and nonacademic spheres. Sam and Casey’s parents moved the family to town from Seattle when the boys were 5 and 3 years old. Rob, their dad, was a film publicist who could work from anywhere, traveled often and internationally, and had wanted to relocate to a college town. The boys’ mother, Margaret Wakeley, suggested Ithaca, where her sister lived. Her roots in the area stretched back generations. In the 1860s her great-grandfather had bought a grand house on Cayuga Lake in Levanna, just north of Aurora.

Feldshuh, the oldest of three siblings, grew up in Belle Sherman. His parents, David Feldshuh and Martha Frommelt, had arrived in the mid-1980s, with David successfully pursuing a dual career as a playwright and an emergency room doctor.

For more than thirty years, he has been a professor of theater at Cornell, serving for most of that period as artistic director for the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts. Feldshuh’s play Miss Evers’ Boys was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in drama and adapted in 1997 as an HBO film, which earned twelve Emmy nominations.

Martha, a longtime champion of Ithaca arts and education, has volunteered for the Fine Arts Booster Group and the Ithaca Public Education Initiative, for which she has been a board member. Noah’s aunt is the acclaimed actress and playwright Tovah Feldshuh.

But it was at the Harris boys’ Danby Road home, set a few acres off the road down a long driveway, where the band was born when Sam and Noah were in seventh grade. The group performed only original material from the start. They made their public debut at the Boynton Middle School variety show. The band’s early lineup also included the bassist Allon Brann, the younger brother of Amir Brann, whose

local group, Los Mariscos, had excited the young Feldshuh’s interest. Casey at first kept his distance from his younger brother Sam’s project, but he would invariably come downstairs when they were jamming and “lay down a little keyboard.”

The Danby Road house was an idyllic space for young musicians, according to Casey. For one thing, he explained, “the whole basement got turned into a recording-slash-personal-slash-generallyplaying instruments-and-makingnoise-area…It wasn’t a fully submerged basement, so there were windows onto the yard, and we had the drum kit and the amps around little windows. It was a really inspirational place to write and record music. You’d have the sunshine coming in in the evenings.” For another thing, “if it wasn’t too late, our parents would let us be as loud as we wanted.”

Whereas Sam was outgoing, gregarious, “a performer since he could talk,” as Wakeley recalled, “Casey was just into how things worked, and he would get into computers and learn how to build them.” Because of this, Casey added, “I spent a lot of time at home on the weekends.” Noah, too, displayed an interest in technology, pursuing a middle-school internship at Ithaca Guitar Works, during which he learned about guitar repair from Chris Broadwell and his staff.

Sam and Noah attended Boynton Middle School and Ithaca High School, whereas Casey chose the route of the Alternative Community School (now the Lehman Alternative Community School; LACS). But even ACS, he joked, must not have been alternative enough. He dropped out at 17 and got his GED but co-taught music classes with his beloved teacher Dara Anissi, who introduced him to “Middle Eastern and Indian and East Asian musicians” and other genres he had never before encountered.

Casey also credits another Ithacan with guiding him musically: his piano teacher, Molly MacMillan, with whom he studied from age 9 to about 16. According to MacMillan, “Casey learned music primarily by ear, and his ability to grasp the whole of the piece while learning each part was an amazing gift, and really made working with him a unique experience.

He would learn pieces very deeply, and he worked from recordings of pieces more than most of my other students.” She also recalled Casey’s efforts to master an entire Steely Dan album, with its complex harmonic progressions.

Once settled in Ithaca, Margaret began performing at venues ranging from the Unitarian Church to the Hangar Theater, but now she had moved from singersongwriter material to cabaret shows.

Casey himself “lived a very musically secluded life. I wasn’t aware of the music scene in town until really my friends dragged me out to my first Grassroots Festival, and that’s where I got exposed to a lot of the Ithaca and surrounding-area acts.

And especially I remember John Brown’s Body being really impressive ... and Donna the Buffalo was great.”

For their parts, Sam and Noah—even while dreaming of the bright lights and gravitating to hard-rocking acts like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Stooges— gained formative musical experiences in town, playing at Castaways (now The Dock), the Lost Dog (now Lot 10), the Ithaca Festival, and the Haunt. The group also recorded its first CD in town, even earning an accolade from the Ithaca Times’s own Jim Catalano.

As the band’s “Moms’ Club”—a clique that also includes Adam Levin’s non-Ithacan matriarch—describes it, the small-town restlessness evident in VHS might be overstated, an expression, Frommelt speculated, of “growing up, needing to leave and explore yourself.”

Frommelt further cast Ithaca as a deeply, even uniquely, supportive community for young artists, a place that “obviously celebrates education and arts education.”

She added that “not only were friends and relatives lugging the band members’ heavy amps around town, but they were also coming to their shows, cheering them on all throughout their development.” And she directed particular gratitude to the public school teachers who, at every step, supported the band mates’ adventures and unorthodoxy.

X Ambassadors, with previous names

including the Fuzz Brothers and the Ambassadors, got its first break in early 2012, when its ballad “Litost”—referring to a Czech term for a particular type of unhappiness once explored by Milan Kundera—was chosen for an episode of the WB television drama One Tree Hill. The song was thereafter picked up by the Hampton Roads, Virginia, radio station 96X, where it eventually became a listener favorite. Dan Reynolds, who fronts Imagine Dragons, a group similarly built on driving rhythms, emotionally unstinting vocals, and a penchant for genre mixing, heard another X Ambassadors song, “Unconsolable,” from the group’s 2013 EP, Love Songs Drug Songs, and persuaded his label, Interscope Records, to sign them.

Sometime before X Ambassadors’ 2015 breakout, a music professional reportedly told the band, “You guys belong in arenas. You’re an arena rock band, you just don’t know it yet.” With VHS, the members’ days of playing to occasionally empty halls, of the brothers crashing in Brooklyn apartments, were over. Along with “Renegades,” the record features the lament “Unsteady,” the bluesy, slow-grooving “Low Life” (with Jamie N Commons), faster, edgier percussive tracks, as well as “interludes” echoing the hiphop albums on which the band members were reared. In the first interlude, “Y2K Time Capsule,” recorded in 1999, Rob Harris asks his sons where they imagine themselves 15 years into the future, and they answer, “Very far away.” But home is omnipresent on the album.

As Casey recounted, “One of my favorite places [to go every time I come back to Ithaca] is the South Hill Recreation Trail. You can walk there from my mom’s house downtown,” where she moved after separating from her husband about a decade ago, “in less than half an hour, and you can walk for hours if you take certain turns. It’s blissful, especially having lived in New York City for almost 10 years.” Casey also shows a rather Ithacan awareness of the environmental costs associated with touring. “It pains me,” he said. “I’m always looking for ways to make it greener.” Casey has a special connection with his mother; about six years ago, she donated her kidney to him during a health scare.

On May 14, X Ambassadors played a “Benefit My State” homecoming concert at the State Theatre, with guitarist Russ Flynn performing in place of Feldshuh.

The openers were Robert DeLong and the local act Jimkata. The sold-out show drew a multigenerational crowd, not excluding packs of 10-year-old boys giddily closing in on the Junior Mints at the concession stand. Before X Ambassadors came onstage, promoter Dan Smalls, speaking on behalf of Mayor Svante Myrick, who was in Chicago, read an official proclamation designating May 14, 2016, X Ambassadors Day. For the show’s encore, Sam brought out his mom to perform a poignant duet of “Georgia on My Mind,” with Casey accompanying on keyboard.

As for the benefit part, Smalls noted

For the band members, who had partnered with StubHub for another benefit the day before at Brooklyn’s Frederick Douglass Academy, the return home was deeply gratifying. “It’s the first show we’ve played in Ithaca since we’ve been on the charts,” said Casey beforehand.

“I’m stoked.” Sam seconded this sentiment many times throughout the show.

Wakeley mostly understates her role in her sons’ ascent, although she does acknowledge that she encouraged them to “pursue their passions” and that she was always comfortable onstage, as is Sam in particular. She also notes that the boys’ dad was “a great schmoozer. As a publicist...he’d have to be up there talking with all the big T

stars and finding just the right moments to approach them.” Likewise, she said, Sam “is really good at talking to people” and drawing them out.

But her reflection on the new record’s “interludes” reveals perhaps more than she intended: “It’s interesting, because the boys talk about their album, VHS, being influenced by hip-hop, with a theme. Well, that’s what all my cabarets are. They’re themes. And then I weave in the songs with stories in between. So, I thought, I must have been hip to hip-hop, without knowing it.”

Or this: she was a catalyst—as was her former husband; as were Noah’s artistically prolific parents—for Ithaca to produce what is almost certainly its first numberone song on any chart.

End of the semester finds teams in varying straits

I

have long valued input from readers, and in fact, I get many column ideas from that longstanding and loyal pipeline.

There have been times when a reader sent me an email—or called me—and said, “I have a story idea for you in case you don’t have one for this week,” and I have dropped to my knees and expressed my undying gratitude, as the well was dry, so to speak.

There have been other times—like this week—when about a half-dozen such suggestions come in, and I wish I had a whole lot more space…

First, congratulations to the Big Red women’s track and field team on making history by becoming the first Ivy League team to win the ECAC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Team Championship. (The Big Red also is the only Ivy League women’s team to win the Indoor ECAC team title, a feat accomplished in 2012.) Summer vacation (and ice cream cones and pizza) will have to wait, as Cornell will head to Jacksonville, Florida to compete in the NCAA Preliminary Round.

• • • Congrats go out as well to the Cornell

women’s lacrosse team on their firstever Ivy League Tournament championship, and for getting to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Cornell’s eight seniors led the team to 14 wins (second highest total in program Osadschey history), and to their third NCAA tournament win ever.

• • • Also from East Hill, big news from the Robert Trent Jones golf course. Cornell junior Luke Graboyes became the first Cornell golfer to win medalist honors at the Ivy League Men’s Golf Championships since 1986. Luke parred the final two holes to post a three-day score of 221 before watching his closest competitors fail to get it done down the stretch at Medeteconk National Golf Club. Big Red sophomore

• • • Quite a few Ithaca College students are not yet in relaxation mode, as the softball and the men’s lacrosse teams are all in the hunt for further post-season titles.

The Bomber baseball team won the fifth consecutive Empire 8 title, and did it the hard way, travelling to Pittsford to face St. John Fisher and taking the game into extra innings.

John Prendergast stepped up big, and for his efforts on the mound was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Prendergast clamped down when his team needed him most, earning his second win of the championship in the title game, and improved to 6-0 on the season. In 3.2 innings of relief, the senior hurler gave up two hits while striking out two more. On Thursday, he threw seven shutout innings in the opening round, slamming the door on Stevens, holding them to a single run.

The Bomber bats gave Prendergast room to breathe, pounding out nine runs.

• • • The Bomber softball has displayed a flair for the dramatic of late, and the lategame heroics have propelled the team into the Super Regionals. The Bombers rallied twice for walk-off wins in the Empire 8 tournament a week and a half ago, and pulled off the feat two more times in the opening round of the NCAA Regionals.

Ithaca will now host the Super Regional best-of-three series beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday where it will face Rowan University, which won the Cortland region on Sunday.

• • • The Ithaca College men’s lacrosse team showed the versatility that has led them to the top of the NCAA D-III rankings. While the Bombers often rely on their explosive attack, they put the stifling defensive pressure on Montclair State, shutting the door for the final 8 minutes to earn a shot at two-time defending national champ Tufts on Wednesday. The Bombers are a lofty 20-1 on the season, due in large part to the collective efforts of Ithaca High graduates Eli Gobrecht, Grant Osadchey and Winston Wenham. •

Net-metering Expands Renewables Market Energy can be generated at a remote location, sent into the grid and then credited to the business B y G ly n i s H a r t

y 2030, according to the State of New York’s REV energy plan, 50 percent of the state’s power will come from renewable energy resources. As of 2015, 26 percent already does, largely hydroelectric power generated by dams in upstate, but to make it that last 24 percent—and, one would hope, beyond—the New York Public Service Commission (PSC) and Gov. Andrew Cuomo have rolled out a number of incentives for businesses to switch to renewable energy—solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal.

Business owners will want to know how this works. The Business Energy Investment Tax Credit, a federal program, will reimburse up to 30 percent of the cost of installing a clean energy system, depending on the type: solar, fuel cells, and small wind turbines are reimbursed at 30 percent, while geothermal, microturbines, and combined heat programs (CHPs) are reimbursed at 10 percent.

After that, it gets complicated fast, said Rob Garrity of Renovus Solar.

Garrity handles solar arrays of 11 acres and up; not just the building, but putting together the financial/incentive package for the consumer. For instance, he recently installed a 13-acre array in the town of Seneca. “Any good installer should handle the financing questions,” said Garrity. “When you’re setting up a large community solar project, it’s our job to explain it all.”

There are two ways to do solar: one, on your own property (like the array on the roof of the Maguire car dealership on Elmira Road in Ithaca) and two, through remote net metering.

which Solar Liberty installs and maintains the system and guarantees that your savings will be greater than your yearly lease payments. They also offer a power purchase agreement (PPA). Through this arrangement, a business hosts the solar array while Solar Liberty actually owns it. Solar Liberty installs and maintains the system. The host business then can purchase the electricity at a reduced rate.

However, the current boom in business use of solar is due to remote net metering. That means a business can set up a solar array, such as the one Greenstar Cooperative Market just erected in West Danby, and get the benefit of that array’s contribution to the electric grid.

Recent changes in state energy policy allow businesses to take advantage of

remote net-metering, by which a business can use solar panels remote from the business location to contribute to their power needs. The half-acre installation in West Danby, on Valley View Road, now supplies electricity for GreenStar Cooperative Market in Ithaca. The solar installation, which went online February 17, took some residents by surprise.

Net metering means that, if you’re connected to the energy grid, a meter gauges how much electricity you’re drawing from the grid and how much is flowing back in from your solar panels.

“It’s more simple, because it’s on demand,” said Garrity. “The premise of net metering is that you’re going to get the full rate (that you would pay for electricity) back.

If you’re going to own the system,” you

need to know how it works, he said.

“Remote net metering works through monetary or volumetric units,” said Garrity. “Cornell went to the Public Service Commission and said, ‘You didn’t define the value per kilowatt hour (kwH)’. So, now it’s moving to volumetric measurements. You get a kwH credit; the value is equal to whatever you’re paying at your meter.”

“Rules on net metering are changing all over the place,” he continued.

“NYSERDA changes, the tax credit being extended, it’s changing all the time.”

75 Years Among Spirits

Triphammer Wine & Spirits run by 3 generations of the Crowley family

riphammer Wines & Spirits is celebrating 75 years of family entrepreneurship this year.

The store, located at the Triphammer Marketplace, 2255 N. Triphammer Road, is its third generation of management and at its third location.

Al Crowley, once a downtown restauranteur, opened a liquor store at 222 ½ S. Cayuga St. in 1941, in a bathroomless little block building where the Hotel Ithaca now stands. His wife Margaret took over in the 1950s, and Bob Crowley took over from his mother in the early 1960s and moved the store to what was then called the Triphammer Mall in 1963.

After 20 years away from Ithaca, with stops in Boston, Houston, Portland (Oregon), and Alaska, Bob’s daughter Julie Crowley returned home in 2002 to work in the family business. Shortly thereafter, the Crowleys moved their business into its current location, in a larger space at the Triphammer Marketplace.

In over a decade of working together, Julie and her father, who died in 2013, had the typical philosophical disagreements attendant to running a family business: Bob measured success by cash flow, month-to-month, while Julie, an accountant by trade with a master’s in business administration, told him that wasn’t the whole picture at all.

Over 50 years of business, Bob was the one stocking shelves, sweeping up, buying inventory, and doing payroll with cash and a paper ledger. Julie, working with modern computer technology, manages the Wines & Spirits store’s six full-time employees and another half dozen or so part-timers, along with about 30 employees at Ithaca Coffee Company.

There’s a rewards program and an email newsletter to run from her back office, where Molly, the third-generation Boston

terrier face of the business and Cuppa Joe, a Brittany spaniel with his own coffee line, greet visitors.

“It’s a totally different business,” Crowley said. “With one person doing everything, you just can’t grow like we have.”

Crowley has wine buyers and managers she calls “fantastic,” with manager Karl Kernan having spent over a decade at Triphammer. For the Ithacan looking to dive into oenophilia, Crowley recommends having her staff put together a case of wine to please and challenge the palate.

“People who can manage this business don’t grow on trees,” Crowley said. “A general knowledge of wine is a lot different from managing inventory. Anyone can buy wine and move it to the back when it doesn’t sell. To buy quality product and turn it over, you’re not just walking off the street with that.”

The Triphammer staff visit local winemakers, and has made the trek to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail to pick out its own barrels of Knob Creek, Woodford Reserve, and Wild Turkey, which are bottled and then sent exclusively to their warehouse. The barrels come along, too; Ithaca Coffee has experimented with aging the beans in the bourbon barrels before roasting.

Adding Ithaca Coffee Company to the family “portfolio” has complemented the liquor business, Crowley said. The first Ithaca Coffee store opened in the Gateway Center in 2007, adding a tavern in 2009; their second location next door to the Wines & Spirits store received its license to sell beer and wine about five years ago.

State regulators weren’t thrilled with the tavern concept at first. Crowley said one told her he “thought of Starbucks and said no.” A similar resistance was met back

in the 1960s, when Bob Crowley had to wait a while for the state liquor authority to figure out what to do about strip malls.

Now, a customer has food and drink options in one location throughout the day at the Triphammer Marketplace.

“People can get a cup of coffee in the morning, buy their booze in the afternoon, and get a beer at the end of the day,” Crowley said. “When we have tastings, they can go next door and have a glass of wine at the tavern.”

The coffee shop and tavern business also gives Crowley a diversity of revenues and expertise, if the long-discussed change in legislation to allow wines in grocery stores comes to pass.

“Dad was always a good supporter of the local wineries from the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s. We have the Finger Lakes wines right up front. You put them in a local grocery store you’ll see the section go like this,” Crowley said, pushing her hands together.

For the 10th anniversary of the new Wines & Spirits store, Crowley renovated the wine tasting bar, where you “can’t buy a drink,” but it “classes up the joint.”

There are eight wines on tap for tasting, and vendors coming in to do tastings on weekends use the bar.

Last year, Crowley added recessed lighting over the liquor shelves; the next project will be to replace some worn carpet. These are the projects “no one will notice, but they make us feel good,” she said.

Bob Crowley was prone to asking the question “What the hell are you spending money on that for?” Julie said. “But he said ‘A lot of the things I’ve disagreed with you turned out pretty good.”

Reborn Inn at the Falls Taughannock Farms Inn expands services under new ownership

any of us have warm memories of Easters, Mother’s Days, birthdays or rehearsal dinners celebrated overlooking the park and lake from the Taughannock Farms Inn’s glassed-in porch, with warm sweet breads on the tables and veteran waitresses who could ramble through their long list of desserts without taking a breath. Because the inn itself has been in business for seventy years, there are plenty of us whose relatives managed not to cry there during our first parents’ weekend, and whose

Another couple with deep connections to the inn is groundskeeper and facilities manager Dan Wright and his wife, master baker Yvonne Wright. The couple, who have been married for 40 years, met at the inn where Dan has worked for 50 years and Yvonne for 42. Dan’s father worked there too for many years as the chef, and his mother was the original baker for the inn starting in 1946. Their family’s connections to the inn run deep, reflecting

parents, four or so years later, celebrated being able to begin once more saving for retirement.

For Joe and Carrie Regenstein the inn holds memories of a slightly different good time, crowned by a good deed. On their first dress-up date in the summer of 1964 (he recalled she was wearing pink), the two Cornell students took a taxi to the inn for a much-anticipated fancy dinner “to celebrate ourselves,” she recalled. It cost every cent they had. That left them with the choice of walking many miles back to campus or hitch-hiking. A woman who stopped for them said, “You look like you have an interesting story. If you’ll tell me about it, I’ll give you a ride home.” And they did. And she did.

“Most memorable for us always is the beauty of the surroundings,” said Carrie. “Through the years of dining there, we often stop by the falls beforehand to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

We generally get to the restaurant early enough to enjoy the view.” The Regensteins will celebrate 50 years of wedded bliss and adventures on June 12, at the Taughannock Farms Inn. “I mean, really,

the property’s place in area history.

In the beginning, well, actually in 1873 when Philadelphians John and Molly Jones built their magnificent “summer cottage,” they owned most of what was to become Taughannock Falls State Park. Looking down from the building’s dining room, you can still see the oval track where they exercised their racehorses. Their portraits still preside over the inn’s formal Jones Room. They sold the greater part of the property to New York State for the park in the 1920s, but the home and twelve acres remained in their family until 1946, when their heirs sold the property to Maude and Merritt Agard, whose family, including Keith and Nancy Agard LeGrande provided stewardship, added buildings, and turned the property into an inn, and it passed to Tom and Susan Sheridan in 1997. This February, the Sheridans sold the property to a group of investors with ties to the local area, Ithaca College, and Hollywood. According to general manager Brian Simon, the new owners plan to retain the warmth and charm of the place while advancing community ties and updating and expanding the facility.

And while chef Mark Alamond has updated and revised the menu considerably, the inn continues to serve many of the house favorites. Patrons can still find home-style meatloaf, spaghetti and house-made meatballs, roasted chicken, and the favorite Taughannock traditional turkey dinner, which has been on the menu for the past 70 years.

But the menu also features plenty of modern-day ocean-going specialties: tuna tartar, Maryland crab cakes, and Chef Mark’s award-winning Nantucket clam chowder lead it off, and diners might progress to Cajun seared ahi tuna, day boat scallops, swordfish, or Maine lobster.

Turn to the grill for their gourmet Kobe burger, grilled lamb chops, filet Mignon, or New York strip steak. Vegetarians and the gluten-free will find soups and salads, as well as fresh pastas with house-made sauces, and sides that cater to their palates and needs.

While updating the facility to attract visitors to both the park and the Finger Lakes, new management is putting stock in maintaining local relationships. “It’s a gem,” said Simon, “and people treasure it.” He himself worked at the inn when he was a Cornell hotel school student years ago, and, after working with Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, D.C., and then with WTS International as a consultant for luxury hotels all over the U.S., he considers this job “a dream fulfilled.”

One small example is the transformation of one of their inn houses into a pet-friendly hotel, Tails at Taughannock, its rooms outfitted with dog beds, bowls, and dog treats.

There are bigger plans in the works, too, including a partnership with the park to install seating space at the trail head for Taughannock Falls gorge hikers, with steps up to the inn. They hope to see this installed by summer’s end. A bistro is part of their 2017 plan, with a juice bar, sandwiches, and burgers for hungry hikers. They are also planning to expand outdoor dining and to start a picnic basket service for visitors who’ll be able to reserve a lunch basket to be delivered to them in the park. Also planned is a dock for park patrons and inn guests, with chauffeur service, or at least golf cart service, to the inn, and, because the new owners are firmly planted in both the 19th and 21st centuries, they plan to provide Tesla docking stations.

There will be other facilities expansions as well, according to Simon, the largest of which is an event center that will seat 200 guests indoors, providing space for weddings, conferences, and other happy events. Those plans call for a two-story building with a flat croquet yard, bluestone patio, and flexible space for meetings and groups. They see it as a year-round destination that will bring mid-week business to the inn and the surrounding community. They plan to accommodate motor coaches and limos, and hope to give wine trail visitors a place to eat and enjoy. As of June 7, the restaurant is open for dinner every night of the week, and for brunch on Sundays, ready to make more memories. § T

GO was started in 2005 to help struggling lowincome students in all of the Ithaca City School District elementary and middle schools.

Students receive two hours a week of free after school tutoring and remain in the program for multiple years. GO Kolby Harrell tutors are primarily retired teachers who stay with the same student for four years or longer. In addition to expert one-on-one academic help, tutors also provide mentoring for students, often taking them on enriching field trips. During the current school year, GO tutors are working with 70 students in grades 2-8, helping them improve their grasp of academic skills and their feelings

New Executive at GO

Golden Opportunity (GO), a nonprofit tutoring organization, is preparing to turn the page in its management book. Starting in August, GO will be led by new executive director, Kolby Harrell. Harrell will replace GO’s founder and previous executive of 11 years, Marty Kaminsky, who will join the Board of Directors.

Kolby Harrell graduated from Armstrong State University in Savannah, Georgia with a master’s degree in Professional Communication and Leadership with a focus in nonprofit management. He worked with the Savannah-Chatham County public school system as a teacher, youth advocate and curriculum specialist for several years. Two New Downtown Businesses

On Wednesday, April 20, the Downtown Ithaca Alliance and City of Ithaca Mayor Svante L. Myrick welcomed two new businesses.

That morning there was a ribbon cutting ceremony for Hancock Estabrook, LLP in Gateway Center (401 East State Street Suite 304). Founded in 1889, Hancock Estabrook is a full-service law firm representing individual and business clients in a number of different industries.

The firm also has offices in Syracuse, Albany, and Utica. Says Marketing Director Carrie T. Ryder, “Our expansion into the Ithaca area will allow the firm to increase its client base in the healthcare, municipal, education, and manufacturing fields. We look forward to being a vital part of the downtown Ithaca legal and business community.”

Savino Wins Lucy J. Brown Award

Eileen Savino, outreach worker at the Office for the Aging, has been honored

by Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services/Better Housing for Tompkins County as this year’s recipient of the Lucy Brown Award for Leadership in the Community.

Savino was honored at an INHS/Better Eileen Savino Housing awards event April 25th.

The award is named for Lucy J. Brown, a 40-year member of the INHS Board of Directors, who has made significant and lasting contributions to both INHS and the greater Ithaca community. According to INHS Director of Community Relations Suzanne Cerquone, the award is presented each year “to a member of our community who, like Lucy, exemplifies a similar commitment to community and neighborhood, as a voice and advocate for those who have been typically underrepresented, and whose efforts have made a difference in the lives of many and consequently to the benefit of us all.”

Office for the Aging Director Lisa Holmes notes, “Eileen frequently works with INHS/Better Housing, helping low income older adults make needed repairs to their homes. She is often working with people in emergency situations— frozen

pipes, no water, hoarding situations, etc.

It is wonderful that this organization with whom we partner is recognizing Eileen for her hard work and her advocacy on behalf of some of the county’s most vulnerable residents.”

permits through local towns. “Every local municipality does it their own way,” said Garrity. The Town of Ulysses passed zoning regulations earlier this year, establishing setbacks and other requirements just in time for the Sciencenter, in Ithaca, to establish a remote solar array on Jacksonville Road.

Other municipalities may find themselves behind the eight ball on this one, without regulations in place that might prevent, for instance, agricultural land being taken out of production for solar panels.

While the Town of Ulysses has already put together and passed regulations governing large scale solar arrays, such as would be used for businesses, and the Town of Dryden has it “on our planning board agenda,” said Dryden supervisor Jason Leifer, other towns and villages have yet to put regulations in place. Among the issues that regulation might address are, “How do you spare agricultural soils that would be better to be farmed?” Leifer said they also need to put in place removal bonds, similar to those for cell towers, so that when the time comes to take the solar panels down, the company that installed them can do so.

The Tompkins County planning department is hoping to get regulations in place to handle large-scale solar arrays, before those arrays cause friction. Joan Jurkowich appeared before the Tompkins County Council Of Governments on April 28 to let officials know that the department is working on developing regulations “to address local concerns and promote local developments, and have some standardization for the people who install” solar arrays.

“We want to make sure there isn’t a drag on it because of a lack of regulations,” said county planner Ed Marx. “Or, because of overregulation.

We’re hoping to change our energy system for more renewables, but we don’t want a clash between developers and people who resist, for whatever reason.”

Legislator Mike Lane (D-Dryden and chair of the legislature) said that, as with other episodes in the energy industry, people who are speculating may be moving in: “There are already landsmen trying to sign people up, just as with natural gas leasing, and people can be a bit blind about this … These folks may be speculative, trying to create value in these leases and then flip them.”

Lane said there are also safety issues with solar arrays that need to be addressed. For firefighters, he said, the fact that you can’t turn them off while the sun is shining can be a problem.

Jurkowich said she was mostly interested in direction from the council on how to do public outreach on the issue. Several people said workshops are effective. Over the next six months, said Jurkowich, the county planning board will be coming up with key provisions for the regulations to cover. §

And for music lovers spring means our annual Mayfest, now in its ninth year, with exciting musicians and beautiful music. Sponsored by the Department of Music at Cornell, this festival is organized and directed

by Xak Bjerken and Miri Yampolsky, both internationally acclaimed pianists who have extraordinarily talented friends and colleagues to invite. This year the festival presents six concerts, starting on Friday evening, May 20, and running through Tuesday, May 24, in several venues on or near the Cornell campus. Two new faces will be featured, while most of the returning guest artists have performed here before—some quite often. They will join with resident players in a varied program that includes Mozart, Schubert, and Beethoven, but concentrates on music of the 19th and 20th centuries, with a special tribute to Serge Prokofiev, as this year marks the 125th anniversary of his birth.

In May 2008 Bjerken and Yampolsky said it had always been their dream to mount this kind of festival. And for nine years they have worked to create arguably the best classical music event of the season. Mayfest has become a special time for them each year to welcome and perform with their friends. And so it remains.

A new visiting artist will make his solo debut to open the first concert. Clarinetist Chris Grymes is based in New York City. A few weeks ago he mounted a program there to commemorate Cornell professor and Pulitzer

six musicians of which Wang is artistic director.

Also returning is soprano Íride Martínez, a native of Costa Rica who is now at the Vienna State Opera—“We feel very lucky she could come,” Yampolsky said.

Playing the hauntingly beautiful violin opening for one of the Richard Strauss songs she performed in 2011, “Morgen,” was Tatiana Samouil, a native of St. Petersburg who now lives in Belgium. She is at Mayfest on her third visit, one that had to be postponed because of her being almost fatally injured in a horrendous mini-bus accident. Her prognosis was grim, she went through seven surgeries, and has recovered.

As she told Yampolsky, first it was a question simply of survival, then of whether she might be able to even walk, and then to ever play the violin again, and on the level of her previous performance. She has overcome all these obstacles, “never once complaining.” She wants people to know of this experience, and of her belief about the power of music to help overcome T

incredible physical problems. From all reports her playing is even better than it was before. And the admiration of her colleagues is boundless.

“She is one of the most beautiful people I know,” Miri added. She has always dreamed of playing the Strauss Violin Sonata, op. 18, and will perform it in the final concert.

Mayfest will open at 8 p.m. on Friday with the first chamber music concert ever in Cornell’s new Klarman Hall auditorium. “We are really excited about the acoustics,” Bjerken said. “Yes, we are moving a piano in.” Grymes will play “Synchronisms no. 12 for clarinet and electronic sounds by Argentine American Mario Davidovsky, born in 1934 and best known for these pieces with instruments and electronics. Grymes will then be joined by Wang and Yampolsky for Mozart’s charming Trio in E-flat major, K. 498, called “Kegelstatt”—which roughly translates into “bowling alley.” The story goes that Mozart composed it during a game of skittles. After intermission comes one of the big works of the festival, the Piano Quintet in F minor, composed in 1878–79 by César Franck.

To be played by Samouil, Wang, Karni, Plesser, and Yampolsky, it is very lush, pure Romantic music.

Concert II in Barnes Hall also opens with a modern piece, Three Tarantellas by Loren Loiacono (b. 1989), a candidate for the Cornell DMA in Composition who, according to Bjerken, is “leaving this semester with many commissions coming her way.” The work dates from 2007 and will be performed by Grymes and Bjerken. Then comes the first tribute to Prokofiev, his Violin Sonata No. 1 in F minor, op. 80, to be performed by Wang and Bjerken.

Although it seems strange to mark a 125th birth anniversary, Yampolsky heard about it from a dedicated scholar and researcher who claimed this anniversary should be honored. Composed for the famous Russian David Oistrakh, the sonata was written between 1938 and 1946, and its tragic overtones reflect the devastating years of World War II. The concert closes with Beethoven’s grand Septet in E-flat major, op. 20 (1799–1800), written during the composer’s early years in Vienna. It is dedicated to Empress Maria Theresia and was first performed in 1800 as part of Beethoven’s inaugural concert. This was a time of extraordinary creativity for the composer— the six quartets, op. 18, come from this period— and the Septet became a popular piece. “It will sound familiar,” Bjerken said, and Haydn called it “beautiful … splendid.” Scored for winds and strings, it will be played by Grymes, clarinet; Alex Shuhan and Lee Goodhew Romm, horn and bassoon, respectively; Samouil, violin; Karni, viola; Plesser, cello; and Nicholas Walker, double bass. Shuhan, Romm, and Walker, all with IC connections, have participated in previous Mayfest concerts.

The third concert in the afternoon on May 22 will be a festival highlight, as it will take place at Cornell’s Laboratory of Ornithology, a perfect setting for music about birds and nature.

The Jumbling of Heroes

New Marvel film rushes to fit everything in

up sides when all the heroes are asked to sign a restraining order. Black Panther and other characters are introduced to an already packed ensemble. If you haven’t seen all the previous Marvel movies, they do a rushed but effective job bringing newbies up to speed.

Bizarrely, this two-and-a-half-hour film feels rushed, with lots of characters coming and going in a frenzy of locations and scenes. Joe Russo & Anthony Russo (Community) did a great job with the ‘70s-paranoid thriller feel of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but the new film never finds the tone in an overstuffed narrative. The film spends too much time telling us about characters that aren’t even in the movie: Pepper Potts, Thor and Hulk.

Nick Fury should be in the movie but isn’t.

And just about all the superheroes are infected with the Zack Snyder ennui that’s infecting the burgeoning DC movie-verse.

I think up till now the Captain America films and character have been the best movies, but Evans’ Cap pulls a few moves

etween Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Tony Orlando and now Captain America: Civil War, I feel like these comic book movies are beating me up as much as the characters are beating each other up. I walked out feeling depressed, emotionally pummeled like the meat slabs that Rocky Balboa pounded back in the day. I fear 2016 will be remembered as the year that comic book movies were no fun at all.

The new Cap, like Bat V. Supes, is all about superheroes, civic responsibility and collateral damage payback, so I get that it’s meant to be the Empire Strikes Back of the Marvel cinematic universe: As the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) is reactivated as an assassin by a mysterious bad guy (Daniel Bruhl), Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) take books

Local author spins tale of gambling and woe

deals with the dimensional plight, wounding, and rising of Asmodeus, and the demon’s relationship with a powerful woman, in his novel Red and Black Syndrome; issuing forth a sexually charged thriller, forged with a peculiar dualistic narrative.

The pacing and color of Red and Black Syndrome runs parallel to an idea I was pondering over throughout much of the tale: that the story acts as a giant metaphor for healthcare in the United States, and the relationship sex and feminism has to it.

The protagonist of the story, Lena, a sultry, individualized 28-year-old, has enrolled in the services of witchcraft, demonology, and general abstraction to help pay the cost of her comatose mother, who’d likely perish without such devotion. Lena conjures the demon Asmodeus with the help of a good witch, to help her win at roulette tables across the globe. She acts only as a medium for the abilities of the demon though, and must use her sexuality to trick and manipulate (though remorsefully) random individuals into being possessed by the

he calculating and translucent demon Asmodeus —central to many religious canons, moralistic structures, and metaphorical interpretations—is ultimately one with a dualistic form. Principal in Christianity’s seven deadly sins, Asmodeus is the demon (or God) of lust; and thus represents negatively (in Christianity) the action of mankind’s most twisted sexual desires.

But for a LaVeyan Satanist (a follower of Anton Szandor LaVey’s The Satanic Bible), lust, and therefore Asmodeus, represents a central (and positive) action required to fulfill and reach a certain human need, instinct, and philosophical boundary.

A Celebration for Moog

Synthesizer pioneer is celebrated in Trumansburg

he Minimoog was developed here; that really brought the sound to the masses.” Greg McGrath sits on a couch in the Rongovian Embassy, where he and Trumansburg village historian Michelle Mitrani have come to explain MoogDay to the uninitiated. MoogDay, Sunday, May 22, will celebrate the legacy of synthesizer pioneer Robert Moog with a number of events. McGrath will kick off the show at the Rongo with an introduction, followed by Trevor Pinch, author of Analog Days; The Invention and Impact of the Moog Synthesizer, and composer Dave

Borden, a pioneer in synthesizer music and the founder of Mother Mallard, the first all-electronic music ensemble. Jordan Aceto will lead a DIY synthesizer-making workshop (first come, first served) and other events to be announced will transpire around the village. Moog’s birthday is actually the following day, Monday, but this day was chosen to support the festivities.

Robert Moog started his business life as a theremin maker—a strange instrument that wails and keens when you wave your hands around above a humming tube of metal. He came to the area to work on his Ph.D. in engineering physics at Cornell in the early 1960s, and began developing synthesizers—back then, a completely new form of musical instrument—in Trumansburg.

A 2004 documentary on Moog by Hans Fjellestad (called Moog), follows the inventor from his garden in Asheville, North Carolina, backstage with Rick Wakeman (of the Strawbs and Yes) and Bernie Worrell (Parliament/Funkadelic and Talking Heads), and tells the story of how this particular invention changed music.

Moog describes his invention in mystical terms, as coming “through” him, rather than being something “from” him, and says in several places that there’s another level to it all. Not just the electrical impulses coursing through the circuitry he

assembled, but an almost spiritual form of communication On the Mother Mallard website Moog’s friend David Borden described his role in idiot-proofing the synthesizer. That is, he’d go by the factory in Trumansburg in the middle of the night and play music on the synthesizer—at that time, an enormous and enormously expensive machine sprouting dozens of wires and plugs like a 1930s telephone exchange.

“To me, it looked like the cockpit of an airplane,” Borden writes, “and hopelessly complicated. Bob though, took me under his wing and patiently taught me how to use it although I ruined some of his modules along the way. In fact, I hooked them up in such a bizarre way, not understanding what I was doing, that they redesigned several of the modules having not anticipated someone as totally unaware of the principles behind the design as I was. Otherwise they could have been facing many returned synthesizers burned out by neophytes likes me.” (mothermallard.com) When Borden and the group Mother Mallard first played synthesizer music in public, beginning with an appearance at Willard Straight Hall in April 1970, the synthesizer eclipsed the musicians. “The billing wasn’t Mother Mallard or even David Borden,” said Borden, “but as The Moog Synthesizer.”

In the film, Moog and Herb Deutsch describe a moment in time when they had this instrument, but the market for it had not yet been invented. By 1971 the Moog factory in T’burg was struggling.

“Bob was such a nice guy that he basically doomed the company,” said McGrath. A businessman from Buffalo bought out the factory and moved the business away from Trumansburg. “When he left T’burg, there were probably four synthesizer factories in the world. Nowadays, there’s probably 400,” said McGrath.

When Moog died four decades later, in 2005, he had lived to see the wonderful impact his invention had on the music world, as well as reap some material rewards from his invention. If his widow has her way, the Moog archives will someday become the property of Cornell University.

“We’re [Judy Hyman and I] playing some time between 6 and 8, I think,” said Borden. They’ll be playing ‘Easter,’ the first composition Borden created for the Moog synthesizer, recently re-released by the record company in honor of the date.

The Expression of Forms

Local photographer excites in varying techniques

H

erself a former dancer, local photographer Jari Poulin brings a rich affinity for the human body to her work: both her commercial portraiture and her personal projects. Her recent Dance/Memory series is a sustained investigation of movement, emotion, and social connection—and the ways that these can be translated into static pictures that nonetheless have the slipperiness of things remembered or imagined. Working in her studio black box, as well as occasionally on-site, she collaborates with local dancers, improvising motions and postures.

Organized by the Ink Shop Printmaking Center, where Poulin is a member, her current one-person exhibit “Dance Images” fills the first floor Legacy Gallery at the Community School of Music and Arts through May 27.

An exploration of various “alternative” photographic processes is key to Poulin’s recent gallery-oriented art. While for her commercial work, she shoots and prints digitally; her dance images combine digital camerawork with labor-intensive chemical processes. She brings to these pieces an artisanal warmth, in pointed contrast to the standard inkjet print.

For her dance series, she has made prominent use of photopolymer gravure.

A contemporary variation on a traditional approach, it combines the methods of photography and intaglio printmaking While traditional photogravure requires soaking a gelatin-coated copper plate in acid, Poulin uses a hard plastic-covered plate instead and is non-toxic.

Here the artist’s large gravure pieces are joined by smaller ziatype prints—some versions of the same camera image. The tactile difference between the two methods is instructive. The former are grainer and bear various subtle color tints. (Poulin mixes color into the black etching ink.) As intaglio prints, they are subtly embossed— the result of running the plate through a mechanical press. The latter, in neutral black, have irregular footprints and brushy borders derived from her hand painting of the emulsion onto the paper.

The artist makes expressive use of blurring and cropping, with some images closer to traditional portraiture and others delving further into the visceral action of limbs and torsos.

Murals at Johnson were created with a purpose

ne of the hard lessons gained by writing about art with any seriousness is that good intentions are not enough. This is true enough when it comes to narrowly aesthetic motivations. It becomes all the more evident when looking at goals that are social or moral. (But art really is good for society—even us jaded snobs want to believe this.)

“Revealed: WPA Murals from Roosevelt Island,” at the Johnson Museum through May 29, is a case in point.

Assembled by staff curator Nancy Green, the exhibit has a fascinating backstory. It represents the first public showing of three large canvas murals painted in the early 1940s for the Federal Arts Project (FAP), a division of President Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration. The paintings were commissioned for the circular day rooms of Goldwater Memorial Hospital (originally the Hospital of Chronic Diseases). Built in 1937 on Roosevelt Island in New York City, the welfare hospital was considered progressive in its heyday, particularly in its accommodations for the

disabled.

Ilya Botolowsky (1907-1981), Albert Swinden (1901-1961), and Joseph Rugolo (1911-1983), created daring images that defied the prevalent Social Realism for a European-influenced abstraction controversial with the public but possessed of a small group of local supporters.

It was a development scarcely conceivable outside of New York—one indebted to the figure of Burgoyne Diller, himself an abstract painter and project supervisor for the city FAP’s Mural Division.

In anticipation of Cornell’s new tech campus being built on the island (it opens beginning in 2017); Goldwater Hospital was closed in 2013 with the final demolition in 2015. Two groups of conservators worked against the clock to uncover and transport the murals for restoration. A team lead by Helen Im of NYC’s Fine Arts Conservation Group benefited from work done a decade earlier on the Bolotowsky by Luca Bonetti, working for the city’s Adopt-a-Mural

program. A separate crew, from EverGreene Architectural Arts, had a more difficult task—to locate the other two murals, buried under layers of housepaint.

the program features this festival’s special vocal music, with sopranos Martínez and Lucy Fitz Gibbon, who is visiting lecturer at Cornell. She will sing three songs from the op. 23 cycle by Clara Schumann called “Sechs Lieder aus ‘Jucunde,’” set to poetry by a little-known Austrian poet, Hermann Rollet. While the texts are rather simple and sentimental, the music has considerable rhythmic variety, and at times playfulness. Following the Schumann, Fitz Gibbon, who is accompanied by her partner, Ryan MacEvoy McCullough on the fortepiano—he is a DMA candidate studying with Bjerken—will sing an extended work by Schubert, “Viola,” D. 786.

Like all the music on the program, these songs are about birds, their singing, and the nature that surrounds them. Grymes will then perform movement 3, Abyss of Birds, from Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time (1941). The program just had to include something from Messiaen, who studied bird songs all his life and incorporated them in his music.

by Cornell musicology professor Roger Moseley—an art song specialist. She opens with Mozart’s gem, “Das Veilchen” (The Violet) set to a poem by Goethe, followed by four Schubert songs. The group closes with Mozart’s arietta “Oiseaux, si tous les ans” (Birds, if every year), which captures the spirit of French comic opera. Then the

two sopranos, accompanied by Moseley, will join in three Mendelssohn duets, two reflecting a minor-key autumnal view of nature, while the last one is about flowers in the month of May. Mendelssohn wrote beautifully for combined voices and these are especially lovely examples.

Program IV that evening in Barnes features more Prokofiev, starting with his Cello Sonata, op. 119, to be performed

by Plesser and Yampolsky. It is one of the composer’s last pieces, written in a neoclassic style. Longtime friends, the two performers first played this work when they were very young. They didn’t understand it at all then, Yampolsky said, but thought that one day they would revisit it. Meanwhile they have both played it with other people, and have taken it on tour together. Now

they feel they have come to really know and love it. Then Martínez, accompanied by Bjerken will treat us to Strauss’s Six Lieder, op. 68, written in 1918 and set to the poetry of Clemens Brentano.

After intermission violist Karni and Yampolsky will perform the first four movements of Prokofiev’s gorgeous ballet Romeo and Juliet, in an arrangement with the composer’s approval made by violist Vadim Borisovsky. The group ends triumphantly with the famous “Montagues and Capulets.” In closing Bjerken will join with Wang, Samouil, Karni, and Plesser in the second performance of Steve Stucky’s Piano Quintet (2009–10). The musicians will record the work in Bailey Hall the following day on Open G Records.

The Carriage House Café loft is the setting for Program V, which opens with six more songs (op. 13) by Clara Schumann, this time performed by Martínez and Yampolsky. Then Karni and Yampolsky will play the Shostakovich Viola Sonata, op. 147, the last work the composer wrote before his death. In the last movement he includes a reference to every single one of his 15 symphonies. It is a kind of “a prayer near death,” Yampolsky said.

After the break she will play pieces from the late Brahms Fantasien, op. 116, nos.

2, 3, 6, and 7. The concert closes with her accompanying Martínez in the Walzer Gesänge (Waltz Songs) op. 6, of composer/ conductor Alexander von Zemlinsky. Born in Vienna in 1872, he was an important part of the musical scene there, and was close to Schoenberg (who became his brother-in-law) as well as both Gustav and Alma Mahler.

Concert VI in Barnes Hall features the final big ensemble piece, Ernest Chausson’s popular Chanson perpétuelle, to be performed by Martínez, Samouil, Wang, Karni, Plesser, and Bjerken, and followed

by Samouil’s dream coming true with a performance of the Strauss Violin Sonata in E-flat, op. 18. She will be accompanied

by Bjerken. Then comes a return visit by popular percussionist Mike Compitello, with a “really fun piece,” Bjerken said. By contemporary composer Mark Applebaum, who is called the “mad scientist of music,” the work is titled “Aphasia,” and has Compitello making percussive sounds and movements with his own body, accompanied by an electronic sound track. This Mayfest closes with a Robert Schumann classic, played by Samouil, Plesser, and Yampolsky, the Piano Trio in G minor, op. 110.

The artistic co-directors are already looking forward to next year, to having something “really starry,” Bjerken said.

To which Yampolsky adds a message to everyone here. She would like to invite people to just give themselves the chance to enjoy the music that Mayfest provides, because, quite simply, it will make them feel better. “Music is my life,” she added, and “it brings people together, and it enriches your mind and your spirit.” She is right, of course. T

he suspense-thriller genre is akin to the murder-mystery canon; they share a somewhat dour view of human nature and they create worlds in which every person and place becomes a plot point. Loose ends are a sign of failure in these books and there are no loose ends in As Night Falls, Jenny Milchman’s successor to Ruin Falls.

The setting is the fictional Adirondack town of Wedeskyull. No specific sense of place is evoked; you won’t be creeped out on your next visit to Saranac Lake. The plot requires remoteness, native vs. flatlander antagonism, and proximity to Canada, all criteria met well by the Adirondacks.

Sandy Tremont is a therapist in the local hospital and Nick Burgess is a convict in the local prison. Milchman brings you inside their heads and eventually inside the head of Sandy’s daughter Ivy and select other characters, shifting your perspective as a reader from chapter to chapter. Milchman plays with timelines as well; while most of the chapters are numbered, the titles of the flashback chapters are dates.

cloistered, comfortable life, where she is beset by neurotic worries and Nick’s bleak, self-absorbed world stripped to animal concerns by sociopathology.

Milchman borrows from Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men to give Nick a hulking, low IQ companion named Harlan. When the escape from prison together, you know worlds will collide unpleasantly.

It is implied that Nick’s mother Barbara, whom you meet in the flashbacks, has helped create the psycho that her son became. Because it is now generally accepted that sociopaths are born not made, this seems a rather outdated touch. Milchman suggests that his mother’s obsessive love exacerbated his narcissism and propensity for violence. It certainly works as a plotting device; you feel like you’re watching Dr. Frankenstein inexorably creating his monster.

A quarter of the way into the book you may be wondering how Milchman is going to fill the remaining 300 pages, and then all kinds of quite believable pieces of circumstance introduce delays into the escape plan that was supposed to unfold after Nick and Harlan violently invade Sandy’s home. Sandy’s husband Ben valiantly resists the assault, injuring Nick before being violently subdued by Harlan. Then an early snowstorm sweeps in. Complications then cascade one into the other. Pre-existing tensions between mother and daughter give rise to selfdefeating acts of petty anger.

The violence and venality of the pulp fiction and film noir of the 1940s and ‘50s usually took place in the seedy underworld and when it impinged on

The artist’s new current showing “Stacked: A New Way of Seeing” is a sort of revolutionary approach. Bosak states: “My new exhibit highlights recent experiments in a new photo technique called focus stacking that allows practically unlimited depth of field, creating an effect that was previously possible only in paintings.” The photographs are up through May at Gimme Coffee on State Street. The middle class, who constituted most of the audience for these stories, was not part of the picture. Sometime in the 1960s though it became permissible to allow the ugliness and amorality of the criminal class to show up in the living rooms and workplaces of the middle class. Writers began telling you that nowhere is safe and everyone is vulnerable.

Milchman’s As Night Falls is very much in this contemporary tradition, but she is also a very good writer. Her characters—psychotic, neurotic, or apparently sane—are all well drawn and believable, not the grotesque cartoons that populate some parts of the suspense-thriller landscape. Her plot includes the right number of twists and revelations to make it not just interesting, but compelling. Some contemporary plots seem so over the top as to be satires of their own genre. In addition, Milchman regularly adds descriptions of the way her characters think that are

he house at 131 East Main Street in Trumansburg is right on the road, but once you are inside of it, you would never know that. The owners have insulated the house to the point where you barely hear the traffic. In addition, the extensive renovation of the interior has the effect of making it a world onto itself, inviting and comfortable and far away from the world outside.

You will enter through the side door and find yourself in the kitchen, which is organized around a central island that includes a sink and breakfast bar with three chairs. The working area of the room is floored with hickory and the remainder is tiled.

cherry panels and maple trim. This two-toned look actually works quite well because more of the surface is dark cherry and the light maple trim serves to brighten the room and define the doors of the cabinets.

The floor in the dining room (pictured at right) is oak, but the wainscoting is butternut. This species is related to walnut, but while that wood can have a purplish caste, this is a warm, yellowish-brown.

There are double-doors leading out to a side yard where a deck or a patio could be added. Although these doors provide a lot of light, there are also two skylights that let in even more.

A hall to the back of the house brings you past the laundry room and a wall of built-in storage cabinets (also made of hardwood). There is a mudroom inside the back door and off to the right is another room that is large enough to be used as an office or even a bedroom. The floor here is a motley collection of all the hardwood left over from other jobs. This out of the way room actually has tiger maple trim.

The living room is at the front of the house and still has the original 19th century wide plank floors. They are in quite good shape because they were covered with carpeting for decades and have been painstaking restored by the owners.

closets.

The upstairs bathroom has just been renovated and includes a tiled shower stall.
