ornell University junior and current fourth ward alderperson Patrick Mehler will be running against a fellow Cornellian in the Democratic primaries in June. Tiffany Kumar, a sophomore, has announced that she’ll be running for Mehler’s current seat as a member of the Solidarity Slate.

There are two current Solidarity Slate members on council, Phoebe Brown and Jorge Defendini. They were both elected in the November 2021 election, and Defendini is also a student, though he will

be finishing up his studies this month.

Mehler joined Council last fall as an appointed replacement of former alderperson Steve Smith after he resigned to move out of town.

Since then he has been able to get legislation through that extends the amount of time renters have before landlords can ask them to renew their leases. He is currently finishing his junior year and said he intends to stay in Ithaca after graduation.

“I’ve really enjoyed the work I’ve gotten to do and I think I can get some more done,” he said.

One of his priorities going forward is meeting transportation needs of all kinds in Collegetown.

“Helping make Collegetown a safer, more walkable place is huge on my list,” Mehler said. “And that starts with the extra money for College Ave in last year’s budget.”

He said he has been working with the city’s engineering staff to figure out how to make the area safer for people to walk, bike and drive.

“Currently my focus is local infrastructure and moving those projects along,” he said.

Mehler said he’s also looking to give Collegetown an identity and finding ways to acknowledge the local businesses in the fourth ward.

“We should celebrate the local businesses and find some way to celebrate what it’s like to live in such a phenomenal community,” he said.

Mehler believes one of his strongest attributes is his ability to connect with both the students and permanent residents in the fourth ward. He said connecting with people is his strength, and that he’s willing to show up anycontinued on page 10

involved in the hiring practices of private businesses. Cantelmo believes the legislation will help close the pay gap for women and people of color. The law will go into effect Sept. 1 of this year.

Fight Another Day

D

espite dropping a 14-11 decision to Yale in the Ivy League tournament over the weekend, the Cornell men's lacrosse team will live to fight another day. It was announced on Sunday that the Big Red would host Ohio State in the NCAA tournament.

There is little argument that Cornell (11-4) belongs in the field after a stellar season during which the Big Red took down the University of Albany, Ohio State, Penn State, Yale, Harvard, Syracuse and Princeton.

There was another justified announcement made recently, as Connor Buczek was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year after leading his alma mater to a share of its 30th Ivy title. Buczek becomes the first Cornell coach to win the award since it was initiated in 2015, and I can tell you that the man in whose name Buczek's coaching position is endowed (he is the Richard M. Moran Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse at Cornell University) would agree that Connor deserves this recognition.

Richie told me many times that he was entirely pleased with the decision to hire Buczek (a Cornell class of '15 All-American and one of the program's all-time great players), and he believed the future of the program is bright under the leadership of Buczek and his highly competent staff of Jordan Stevens, Paolo Ciferri, Max Tennant and Mark Wittink and Sean Cerrone.

Coach Moran stated many times that he believed that Connor's status as “a program insider” gives him an edge in recruiting, as he is well aware of the myriad of demands on a Cornell student-athlete. I was fortunate enough to see Connor and his staff interact with the retired Hall of Fame coach at many gatherings, and it was clear that they held the program's patriarch in the highest regard, as they treated him with great respect, admiration and gratitude.

They knew they were in the presence of a legend, and they savored every moment.

*** Don't let the headline fool you– “Bombers Win 19-3” does not mean that football season is here...

The Ithaca College baseball team had a lot on the line on Sunday, as they would take the field in a rubber match against Union, with the opportunity to host the Liberty League tournament on the line. The Bombers had put themselves in an unenviable position by dropping the opening game of the best-of-three series on Saturday by a 5-2 margin, but found hope by bouncing back to take game two by a 7-3 margin.

In game three, the hosts got off to a good start by shutting the visitors down in the opening frame, then plating two runs in the bottom of the first. Union would close the gap to 2-1, but the Ithaca bats came alive in the third, with hometown player Buzz Shirley driving in his first run of the game before his teammates exploded for six more runs. When the dust cleared, the Bombers had banged out 15 hits, and Matt Fabian and Nicholas Cutaia joined Shirley by driving in three runs apiece.

The day held a little extra significance for the Bombers' other hometown hero, catcher Gil Merod, as Sunday was Gil's 21st birthday.

Details will be forthcoming on the upcoming Liberty League tournament. *** It was also a big weekend for the Bomber men's track and field team, as Ithaca left Vassar with its second consecutive Liberty League outdoor title.

Ithaca College also swept the individual awards, as Nathan Oczkowski won the track portion of the Performer of the Meet award, while Kevin Danaher won the Field Performer of the Meet.

The Bombers put up 211 points at the meet, the University of Rochester was second with 182, R.P.I put up 145 and R.I.T. Tallied 129. Ithaca High grad Nick John– a senior at R.I.T.– placed second in Friday's pole vault event with a 4.55m (14' 11") effort, earning Second Team All-Liberty League honors in the process. *** I have been waiting for the news that Rich Strike, the Kentucky Derby winner, would be DQ'd due to a positive steroid test. When I saw that amazing burst of speed at the end, followed by the horse's incessant efforts to bite the escort pony, I said, “Man, that's an equine 'roid rage if I ever saw one!” Stay tuned...

Legislators speak up on Roe v. Wade, address 'Reimagining' concerns

T

he women of the Tompkins County Legislature spoke out strongly against the leaked Supreme Court draft decision that would overturn Roe v.

Wade, the 1973 decision that protects a pregnant woman’s freedom to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restriction. The Legislature met on May 3, the day after the draft was leaked.

Legislator Amanda Champion said she had “a lot of emotions” but that she was going to share facts. She noted that throughout history women have used abortion to maintain their personal choice of is and when to become a mother. She said that it wasn’t until the 1800s when doctors, who were men, formed the American Medical Association and became arbiters of the abortion process.

Champion highlighted that overturning Roe v. Wade would not eliminate abortion, it would eliminate safe abortion.

“Women who cannot find safe medical care turn to dangerous home remedies,” she said. “Many of these home remedies

include violent self-harm and often result in serious medical emergencies.”

She also noted the equity issues when abortion becomes illegal, because wealthy women are sometimes able to find a willing doctor while poor women often cannot.

“People have abortions. I have had an abortion. Many of the women you know have had an abortion,” Champion said.

“If you do not believe in abortion, then by all means don’t have one. But it’s not an uncommon medical procedure.”

Legislator Deborah Dawson echoed those comments, and thanked Champion for her words.

“I don’t know what to say to people who espouse the right to life out of their performative religiosity and care more about the ‘life’ of a bundle of cells than the lives of women who are forced to have back alley abortions or resort to other dangerous means to terminate a pregnancy that would lead to a baby they cannot see a future to support,” she said.

Legislator Veronica Pillar added that she was proud to be sitting at the Legislators’ tables “with fierce women who will fight” for abortion rights.

“I just want to say that it’s not a radical thing for people to want to be in charge of decisions about their own body,” she said. “We are lucky in New York to have stronger reproductive health protections than other places.”

The meeting took a turn toward more local issues at Chair Shawna Black addressed the Reimagining Public Safety proposal and the concerns about the process at the city level. City of Ithaca Alderperson Cynthia Brock recently requested that the county open up an ethics investigation into former mayor Svante Myrick for some of the decisions he made throughout the process. Black said she does not want to speculate, make public accusations or wade into the debate of what’s happening in the city, and reiterated her support for the plan.

“We are committed to this process,” she said. “Our county will stay the course […] I want to caution us about denying support to the wider work of Reimagining because we are uncertain of the outcomes of one plan.”

County Ethics Board will investigate Myrick, ‘Reimagining’ process T ompkins County Attorney Bill Troy has decided to open an ethics investigation after Alderperson Cynthia Brock requested the county’s ethics board look into the actions of former mayor Svante Myrick during the Reimagining Public Safety process.

Brock’s primary complaints against Myrick include: promise of payment to the task force co-leads without council approval; soliciting funds from outside sources to go toward task force members; the acceptance of Center for Policing Equity’s services pro bono without any assessment into qualifications or motives

and without going through council; and his overlapping time as both the mayor and a paid employee of his current organization, People for the American Way. People for the American Way currently employs people whose roles include lobbying for support for the Reimagining Public Safety plan, which Brock identified as a potential conflict of interest.

On May 9, Troy made the decision that the request must be considered by the Tompkins County Ethics Advisory Board. In Troy’s decision he stated that because the city has not created a Board of Ethics, the county’s board must evaluate requests to

render opinions concerning “issues about how a governmental organization in Tompkins County, other that the county, has conducted its officers as alleged herein.”

Troy’s opinion is in no way a confirmation of guilt, but merely an agreement that the accusations should be investigated. Additionally, the opinion never names Myrick specifically, only referring to the review of “certain acts and decisions made by City of Ithaca personnel and others.” However, Myrick has been the target of Brock’s complaints and was named in her formal request to Troy.

There is no timeline for the investigation, and the county declined to make further comment. Myrick has previously denied wrongdoing and said that he would be happy to cooperate with any investigation.

is daughter, an hour north of him in Middletown, was hearing from a son, four hours north in Ithaca, about a great home for seniors there.

“It’s called McGraw House,” the son told the daughter. “I’ve never seen anything like it.

“It’s like an apartment building, four or five stories, in the heart of downtown.

Studios and one bedroom apartments.

“It’s not assisted living. God bless those who need that, but it’s specifically not that.

There’s a maintenance staff and 24-hour staffing at the front desk, but that’s it. It’s not a nursing home. It’s a residence for older people who don’t need care, but can’t or don’t want to manage a house anymore.

Like Dad. “All the apartments have kitchens, of course, but there’s also a dining room where they have good, low cost meals. There’s recreation and activities for those who want them, but privacy for those who don’t.

“There are no private laundries but there’s one on each floor. There’s a rooftop garden. I took a tour of the place. It’s nice.

Clean, light, bright.

“It’s two or three blocks from the library, church and shopping. Walkable. Anyplace else Dad wants to go I can drive him. I’m eight blocks away.

“I’m there to help him, to hang out with.

He’s all by himself now, every day. He’s a gregarious guy but he sees or talks to no one.

“You know what his biggest problem is going to be here? Walking around with me and every two minutes someone I know is going to see us and want to talk to him.

“Here’s the kicker. The place gets government subsidies. It’s incredibly cheap. Less than $800 a month includes everything.

That’s less than he’s paying now just in taxes and utilities, forget about repairs and maintenance.

“But it means there’s a competitive application process and a long waiting list. Until now they required an in-person interview, but don’t now, because of COVID. That’s a break, in that he won’t have to come up here for it.

“But the waiting list is a year at least, and probably more. That’s why I want to talk to him about it and get started now. Even now at 88 he’d be among the older people there.

Eligibility starts at age 62.

“But no doubt he’d been among the healthiest. We should get him in there while he’s still fit and able to enjoy it. It’d be great for him.

“What do you think?”

“I think,” the daughter said, “you’ll never get him out of that house.”

“Well,” the son said, “I’m going to try.”

The son visited the father on a regular trip, but warned him of an agenda. He told him about McGraw House and said he’d be bringing brochures and information.

When he got there, he was surprised and pleased by the father’s willingness, even eagerness, to listen. “Let’s see the blueprints,” he said.

The positive attitude endured and the application process began.

About six months later, a courtesy letter came in the mail saying his application was still on file and under consideration, subject to the waiting list.

About six months after that, a letter of acceptance came.

And then the father started dragging cold feet.

“It’s a big change,” the father said.

“Yes, it is,” said the son. “But a good one.”

“I’m not sure about it.”

“I’d be surprised if you were.”

There were a few more conversations about it. Deep ones, naturally.

But, as the deadline approached, the daughter proved right. The father wasn’t moving.

The decision was final, and respected: the father’s to make, of course.

The father had lived 50 years in “that house,” as the daughter put it. His wife and he raised four kids there.

His wife died in that house, from cancer, in a hospital bed he brought in.

Eighteen years later, almost to the day, he died there too.

It was sudden. He was 92 and frail, but had not been discernibly worse in any way.

In the final tally: There’d been no hospital.

He’d never been in one, not even to be born.

There’d been no living assistance, no hired caregivers. His sons did a certain amount for him. His daughter did a lot.

For better or worse, wisely or not, he needed only the people he loved, who loved him.

As ever, he did it his way. (Like a lot of Brooklyn guys his age, he liked that Sinatra song, although he personally preferred Tony Bennett.)

It’s not that he would willingly die before losing his independence, but he was willing to dare it. In the end you only have love anyway.

“We had this idea where we wanted to donate to one of the veterinary programs and we thought it would be kind of a fun way to create some buzz around it,” Kilkelly said.

He adds that veterinary programs are competitive and dedicated to their work, so allowing alumni the opportunity to nominate their school was a great way for veterinarians across the country to show their alma mater pride.

“Through my many years of working with veterinarians, there’s one thing you know. All of them are very proud of their veterinary schools that they graduated from,” Kilkelly said.

The Class Act Contribution consists of $5,000 that the veterinary school can do whatever they would like with it.

“It feels great to be able to do this and contribute to Cornell’s program and I feel fortunate I have been working with veterinarians for over 18 years now,” Kilkelly adds.

Kilkelly says he has worked with veterinarians his entire life, including his sister.

“They’re just really good people, I’ve really enjoyed working with them, just really sincere individuals,” Kilkelly said about all

the veterinarians he has worked alongside in his career.

Kilkelly discusses how he understands the process of what veterinarians go through and the timing and costs that go along with pursuing a career in veterinary school, so he is happy to be able to give back in a way.

“To be able to support that means a lot,” Kilkelly said.

Kilkelly says Terravet Real Estate Solutions has a goal to educate veterinarians about the value of the real estate connected to the practice that they own because the real estate property in itself is typically the second largest asset next to the practice that they own.

“It’s important for them to understand what are the ways to maximize that, what are the opportunities in the real estate that both help the value of the real estate, but also help the value in the growth of the practice itself,” Kilkelly said.

Kilkelly’s favorite part of his job is being able to have conversations with veterinary clinic owners.

“It’s definitely been a pleasure,” Kilkelly said. “They’re always open to learn… they’re always open to learn more. They’re always open to just to try and improve themselves and educate themselves or continue to educate themselves.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Roe v Wade and Climate Change

I

t might not seem like the proposed reversal of Roe vs. Wade and Climate Change are related.

But they are.

The treatment of women with this ruling evokes the way a part of our culture treats the Earth as an extraction source to be infinitely exploited, and people of color and women as beings to be used, controlled, or dictated to. It is a part of a paternalistic, hierarchical worldview that assigns white males to the higher echelons.

It’s called the Great Chain of Being, and it’s been around since antiquity.

But the consequences of this ruling go beyond the individual. It is a potent reminder that human population size is one of the greatest contributors to habitat destruction, biodiversity loss, toxic pollution, and overuse of nature’s resources. The Earth’s current population is at 7.8 billion, but predicted to level off at 10.9 billion. Key to that outcome is women. When women get educated, and go out in the world they choose to have fewer children. That is, if they are able to choose.

Roe vs. Wade legalized-abortion, and other methods of birth control, are the essential foundation that allows women equal footing with men.

Equality depends on women’s ability to control the timing, spacing, and number of their children– and/or reject a fetus damaged or forced on them. Women are the basis of sustainable development in developing countries. Their sense of well-being and awareness affect not only the health of their families and the lives of their unborn children, but also the health of this planet.

Gender equality is linked to climate justice. It is no coincidence that many of the people who would reverse Roe vs. Wade also reject the role humans play in climate change.

They focus on individual life, but fail to recognize the strategic interconnectedness of all life on our planet.

Everything you need to know about the ICSD budget before you head to the polls

ixty percent of voters will have to approve the Ithaca City School District budget this year after the Board of Education proposed a 7.21% levy increase. The proposed budget in total is $148,944,098 for the 202223 school year — a 2.59% increase from last year’s $145.2 million budget. The tax rate will hold study at $16.84 per thousand.

The vote is on May 17. Polls are open from noon until 9 p.m. at your polling site.

The tax levy is the total amount of funds the district deems necessary to raise through taxes — essentially one of the controllable streams of revenue. Other revenue streams include state aid, federal aid and reserves. At a Board of Education meeting in April, board members acknowledged that there’s an impending funding cliff that is coming, as pandemic aid dwindles.

In the 2021-22 school year, the state received about $4.4 million in federal aid, while none of that is expected for 2022-23.

State aid for the upcoming year increased about $46,657 while the tax levy, at the current formula, would bring in an additional $2.59 million from the year prior.

However, with the increase of $4.3 million in the budget, plus the loss of federal aid, the school district has decided to ask for that $4.3 million in additional levy.

In the past, the district has tried to stick to the 2.5% tax levy cap placed by the state. Former governor Andrew Cuomo was a strict proponent of that cap, but

since he’s resigned, Superintendent Luvelle Brown said there won’t be penalties for exceeding the levy cap.

He and others on the board attributed the jump in funding to inflation. To his point, the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) said this is the first year where inflation has “far exceeded the maximum allowable growth factor that school districts use in calculating their district specific caps.” A report from the association stated that school districts are facing challenges like escalating costs, labor shortages and supply chain disruptions.

The ASBO puts inflation for the 2021 calendar year at 4.69%, and said through the first few months of 2022 it grew to 7.68%. The report also noted that in recent years between 70-85% of school districts had tax caps that were higher than the rate of inflation, but for 2022-23 the reverse has occurred, with 92% of districts having tax caps lower than inflation.

On average, school districts get 58% of their revenue from local sources. Statewide, on average, 97% of budgets that fall within the tax cap are approved, while 67% of budgets over that cap are. If voters don’t approve the budget, board members said they will likely look to the fund balance to meet the budget needs. The last time the budget exceeded the tax cap was 2014-15.

So how is all that money being spent?

The additional monies in this year’s budget are spread across a few areas. The 1 1 - 1 7 , 2022

( P h o t o : C a s e y M a r t i n) Board of Education itself will see a 5.87% increase in budget, with most of that coming from contractual services such as memberships and conferences. The board clerk will also get a small raise of $1,687, or 2.61%.

The superintendent’s salary will stay flat at $249,501, while the clerical salary will decrease slightly by $1,285, or 1.94%.

Business administration will see an over 8.02% increase, with additional funds going to “contractual services,” attributed to increased cross-training and consultant costs. That will be an increase of $64,550, or 170.5%. Additionally staff salaries will cost an additional 22.47% overall.

A new human resources position was created, which contributed to a 31.19%

increase in personnel costs overall. There’s also a 386.56% increase in supplies and materials, with costs jumping from $5,210 to $25,350.

New communications positions are another major cost, with $199,978 going toward that. At the presentation of the budget in April, Superintendent Luvelle Brown said there was a focus on improving communications operations in-house, highlighting how they shift the funding from one line to another.

“This budget allows for us to transition some funds out of our BOCES line item, where we had monies to support communication, to in-house, where we’re going to build that out internally,” he said.

“We’re going to grow that support and enhance that support with someone who is

going to be doing that work for us only, day-to-day.”

Equipment costs for facilities will add $105,766 to the budget, with the maintenance budget jumping 12.36% overall.

Part of that is the addition of five new positions — four in groundskeeping and one in maintenance.

The addition of multiple technology specialists will add $374,516 to the budget, and an extra $35,000 will be spent on supplies and materials.

Brown said similarly to communications operations, in the past decade the district has gone back and forth between taking care of technology support itself and relying on BOCES. The 2022-23 budget would see it shift to the district, which Brown claims will save money.

“It’s always been to evolve and enhance our offerings, and I’m almost certain today we’re spending less than we were spending on technology back in 2011. Period. Everything from hardware to staffing,” he said.

A big chunk of change will go toward wireless routers for buses and a natural gas generator for transportation services. This will add $268,850 for a 742.71% increase.

However overall transportation costs will be increasing by less than 7%.

Questions about the need for wireless routers on buses have been frequent at board meetings. At an April 26 meeting the board acknowledged that it feels like a luxury but that many students have long bus rides and do their homework on the bus. Additionally, it will allow for remote attendance taking on the bus, which is being billed as a health and safety benefit.

Of the $148.95 million budget, $105.6 million would go to salaries and benefits, $18.65 million to BOCES, $10.44 to debt services, and the remaining $14.25 million to “other.” The district said the proposed budget preserves the jobs of all current instructional staff and maintaining benefits.

IN COMPARISON

With a total budget of $148,944,098 and about 5,341 students, the cost per student comes out to $27,886.93. For context we can look at school districts of similar size.

Rome City School District (RCSD) in Rome, New York, has 5,541 students. The city of Rome is home to about 32,217 people according to the 2020 census which is 1,502 more people than Ithaca’s 30,715.

The proposed budget for RCSD for the 2022-23 school year is $130,285,026 — a spending increase of 5.94% from the year previous and a tax levy increase of 2.5%.

This comes out to $23,512.91 per student.

There are some differences in demographics, particularly that 47.2% of students in RCSD are economically disadvantaged according to US News, while in Ithaca that number is 21.7%. ICSD is more racially diverse than RCSD, and students in ICSD are generally better ready for college. Additionally, the graduation rate in Ithaca is 91.7%, while in Rome it’s 78.5%.

Binghamton City School District (BCSD) enrolls around 5,250 students. The proposed budget for BCSD is $135,794,386, a $7 million increase or 5.4%. The tax levy, however, will stay with-

in its limit at a 1.86% increase. This comes out to about $25,865.60 per student. According to US News, 51.6% of students at BCSD are economically disadvantaged and it is diverse than either ICSD or RCSD. The graduation rate is 73.6%.

Lancaster Central School District (LCSD) is proposing a $122.27 million budget for the 2022-23 budget. LCSD, located in western New York, enrolls about 5,500 students, breaking down to about $22,230.91 per student. There is an estimated tax levy increase of 2.58%, which is below their maximum cap this year.

The budget overall would be an increase of 3.69%. The school is by far the least diverse, with 91.2% of students identifying as white. It’s also a wealthier school district, with just 7.4% of students considered economically disadvantaged. The high school graduation rate is 96.6%.

For further context, according to the living wage calculator created by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Tompkins County has the highest cost of living at $19.63 per hour for a single adult with no children. Oneida County (RCSD) comes in at $16.53, Broom County (BCSD) at $16.89 and Erie County (LCSD) at $17.76. MIT defines living

wage as the hourly rate that an individual in a household must earn to support his or herself. The assumption is that they are working full time (2,080 years per year), and the person’s budget covers basic needs plus all relevant taxes. The formula includes food costs, childcare costs (when relevant), healthcare costs, housing costs, transportation costs, broadband, other necessities and civic engagement.

PROPOSITIONS AND ELECTION DAY INFO

In addition to the vote on the budget, there will be three additional propositions on the ballot. The first is authorizing the district to appropriate up to $1,171,059.78 from its 2018 capital reserve fund for interior renovations and site work at Northeast Elementary School and to purchase six full-size Blue Bird gasoline wheelchair buses.

The next proposition would authorize the district to establish a 2022 capital reserve fund for a probably term of five years, starting on July 1.

The last proposition would authorize the district to convey a piece of real estate adjacent to Beverly J. Martin Elementary School to the City of Ithaca for an expansion of the gymnasium at the Greater Ithaca Activity Center. The property is about 1,312 square feet at 308 N Albany St. Additionally, three board members’ terms are up — Rob Ainslie, Erin Croyle and Eldred Harris. All three are running for re-election, with Jill Tripp, Benjamin Mumford-Zisk, David Shapiro and Karen Yearwood running as well. Board member Kelly Evans recently resigned due for personal reasons after being elected last year. Her seat will also be open. The top three vote-getters will be elected to a full three-year term from July 1-June 30, 2025. The candidate with the fourth highest number of votes will finish the remainder of Evans’ term, which expires on June 30, 2024.

“The biggest experience I bring are these partnerships and relationships,” he said. “Everything I’ve been able to do has not been me by myself. It’s me and someone in the community, and I just elevate those issues.”

When he went through the initial

application and interview process for Smith’s open position, Mehler said his goal was to better bridge the gap between students and city government. He said the fact there’s another student running against him proves he’s been successful.

“It makes me really excited that students are engaged,” he said.

“The short of it is if students are engaging with me and if they feel more connected to the city and more able to thrive here, I think my work has succeeded.”

For her part, Kumar said as a queer Asian American woman, she has seen throughout her life that government institutions at every level do not benefit marginalized communities. She said she’s been heavily involved in community organizations in Ithaca since moving here for the fall 2021 semester.

“I’ve realized how much our city council doesn’t reflect our views,” she said.

in labor. She said in high school she was the student representative when teachers went on strike and because of that has an appreciation for collective bargaining. A Manhattan native but a transfer student from American University in Washington, D.C., Kumar said she was involved in many grassroot organizations in D.C. and also worked on the Hill with feminist non-profits.

Her first priority if elected is housing justice.

“I recognize housing justice is racial justice,” she said. “I have witnessed the violence of houselessness firsthand.”

Kumar’s fight for housing justice would include the Right to Renew legislation that stalled out in the Planning and Economic Development Committee, right to repairs, more affordable housing and inclusionary zoning laws.

She also wants to work on a more progressive infrastructure that would repair streets and walkways to make Ithaca more walkable and bikeable. She said she’d also like to address issues with snow removal cause inaccessibility by increasing staff at the Department of Public Works. She also cites adherence to the Ithaca Green New Deal as important to her.

Like Mehler, Kumar hopes to continue to build relationships between college students and the city government and encourage students to be more involved.

“I’ve been involved with getting people involved in local politics with the Cornell Democrats and Cornell Progressives,” she said.

“I think there’s a lot of apathy on campus but a lot of progressive sentiment.”

She also mentioned her intent to remain in Ithaca for longer if elected.

“I personally have had issues with students running for government and not representing the community in the long term, so if I were to win I would love to stay in Ithaca and take a little longer to graduate,” she said. “I’d move to a part-time student so I could stay here and dedicate my life to it.”

The Democratic primary is scheduled for June 28.

ollegetown businesses got a little love from the Tompkins Chamber of Commerce and the city of Ithaca during the Collegetown Business Walk on Friday, April 22. The intention was to split into groups and meet with businesses to better understand their needs and issues impacting them.

More than a dozen volunteers, including fourth ward alderpersons Patrick Mehler and Jorge Defendini, Acting Mayor Laura Lewis, Second Ward Alderperson Ducson Nguyen, Deputy Director of Economic Development Tom Knipe and Acting Planning Director Lisa Nicholas, among others.

Mehler said they went and visited the more than 80 businesses in the Collegetown neighborhood. He and Nicholas did the 400 block of Eddy, where he said they visited eight restaurants and four different stores.

At the businesses, volunteers asked three key questions: “How is business?”

“What do you like about doing business in Collegetown?” “How can we help your business thrive?”

“It was fantastic to get to connect with these owners to get them connected to resources,” Mehler said. “We did a recap at the end and there’s so much more we can always do for Collegetown, and we now have a much better way of articulating that.”

He also noted that many permanent residents thinks Collegetown dies out when the students leave, but said many of those businesses remain open.

“Uncle Marty’s is always open, the new Ithaca Beer Co. will still be open,” he said.

“We’re finding a way to connect these businesses to downtown.”

Marty Johnson, a co-founder of the Collegetown Small Business Alliance and owner of Uncle Marty’s Shipping Office, said he’s excited for the future of Collegetown.

“The past few years have seen wonderful investment, improvement, branding and pride in our unique neighborhood, and we are thrilled to work with the Tompkins Chamber and City of Ithaca to further beautification and collaboration in our streets and among our neighbors,” he said. “Our community is incredibly special and entirely unique, and when we all work together for its greater good, it shines brightly.”

Tompkins Promotes Deborah Hoover to Small Business Lending Manager Tompkins Community Bank has promoted Deborah Hoover to small business lending manager.

Hoover has worked in the financial industry for twenty-five years, beginning her career as a teller and holding various positions in customer service and branch management. Most recently, she managed the company’s Main Office Branch in Downtown Ithaca.

In her new role, Hoover is responsible for the management of all aspects of small business administration, overseeing and growing the small business loan portfolio for Central New York, underwriting and approving small business loans within the established lending limits, and developing programs designed to increase deposit and loan volumes.

Hoover is a graduate of Dryden Central Schools and holds a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Management from Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3). MAYFEST RETURNS The Fabulous International Chamber Music Festival Is Back at Cornell.

After the long and dismal two years when we were deprived of our annual May treat, we will be rewarded with five wonderful live concerts at Cornell, starting May 20 and running through May 24. The founders and artistic directors of Mayfest, Miri Yampolsky and Xak Bjerken, are both on the music department faculty at Cornell. With established international performing careers they are totally dedicated to chamber music and have been organizing and presenting this festival annually since 2008.

The pandemic changed all our lives in many ways, and these two special musicians, though very aware of their

By Jane Dieck mann privileged and safe status in Ithaca and at Cornell, have felt deeply sad about having had to give up their annual celebration of music and community, and to be deprived of seeing special friends and making music with them. Over these past years both have said how much they looked forward to Mayfest as the highlight of every year, and right now are feeling slightly overwhelmed and very excited about the coming festival.

This year’s list of participating musicians, some “canceled” artists from 2020 and 2021, is almost mind boggling.

Mayfest regulars will remember cellist Zvi Plesser and violinist Xiao-Dong Wang (who this year is playing viola as well). The two have played at Mayfest in

the same years seven times in all. Also returning is Chen Halevi from Israel, the happiest clarinet player one could imagine.

The star of the show, however, is a newcomer — the legendary American soprano Dawn Upshaw, who sang at the Met for many years (she will be always remembered in the role of Anne Truelove in “The Rake’s Progress”) and is beloved for her many exquisitely moving and beautiful recordings. She will be singing in four programs, performing exceedingly interesting repertory ranging from lutenist John Dowland (1563–1626, recognized today as a composer who advanced the early art song) to contemporary composers, some who studied at Cornell. She will be joined by her wife, Nikki Divall, principal violist of the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Also participating are Israeli violinist Guy Braunstein, former concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic, and his wife, flutist and composer Gili Schwarzman. Another newcomer is Bulgarian violinist Vesselin Gellev, concertmaster of the London Philharmonic.

Local performers, besides Miri and Xak, are Cornell cellist John Haines Eitzen (a stalwart Mayfest artist), along with Ithaca College saxophonist and composer Steven Banks, who recently won a prestigious Avery Fisher Grant. He and Xak are opening this year’s festival with the Sonata for Alto Saxophone by Paul Creston.

According to Xak, the programs this year were constructed carefully with their guests. While there are some lesserknown composers, there are discoveries you won’t want to miss, with special and very approachable music. Among the familiar composers, we will hear music

by Beethoven and Brahms, while the festival will close with works by Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn. The music varies from the very serious to the light, where you might laugh or perhaps want to dance.

After starting off the opening of Program I (May 20, at 7:30 p.m. in Barnes Hall) with music for the saxophone, we move on to hearing Dawn Upshaw performing a group of basically contemporary songs by composers including Americans Charles Ives, Ruth Crawford Seeger (mother of the one-and-only folk singer and protest leader Pete Seeger), Jesse Jones and Jihyun Kim (who were doctoral students at Cornell in music composition), plus Margaret Bonds. Also included are Dance Preludes for clarinet

and piano by Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski, followed by the Brahms Piano Trio No. 2, op. 87.

Program II, on May 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Barnes Hall, features music from a circle of European composers from the 1890s — Hugo Wolf (a work written for string quartet and arranged here for flute, violin, viola and cello), songs

by Alma Mahler, wife of the famous composer and condutor Gustav Mahler, and a clarinet trio by eminent Austrian composer Alexander Zemlinsky (who had been romantically involved with Alma Mahler . . . but I digress). Also the saxophone returns with a composition by the performer himself plus music by the late great Steven Stucky.

Program III takes place on May 22 at 3 p.m. in Lincoln Hall, Room B20, and will present works by two Hungarian contemporaries, Zoltán Kodály and Béla Bartók, born a year apart and both deeply committed to promoting the folklore of their country, as one clearly hears in the Bartók. Following Beethoven’s final violin sonata, op. 96, are two pieces by American composer John Novacek (born 1964) from “Four Rags for Two Jons,” scored for clarinet and piano. They are guaranteed to make you laugh.

Also included are a selection from the 24 Preludes for Piano, op. 34, by Dmitri Shostakovich, arranged for violin and piano. Closing the concert is an arrangement of the Chamber Symphony No. 1, op. 9, of Arnold Schoenberg.

The final Program V on Tuesday, May 24, at 7:30 p.m., returns to Barnes Hall. It opens with four songs by John Dowland in an arrangement for soprano and strings. Then comes the Robert Schumann Piano Quartet in E-flat major, op. 47, and closing this year’s Mayfest is the Mendelssohn Viola Quintet, op. 87, written when the composer was only 36 but close to the end of his life.

It has a cheerful opening, followed by truly profound slow movement, and then scampers off in true Mendelssohn style at the end.

Miri explains that their goal will always be to play and hear beautiful music with the best artists, and gives the last word to the “defining figure in American music of the 20th century, Leonard Bernstein, who said: ‘This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.’”

Sam Raimi’s multiverse horror show and Richard Linklater’s space memoir

D

octor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (Disney-Marvel, 2022, 126 min.), the 28th MCU movie and director Sam Raimi’s first film since “Oz the Great and Powerful,” is something of a manic mess. (It started production without a finished script; six weeks of reshoots were needed to clarify the story.) I disagreed totally with the event that sets the plot in motion, and despite the many cool, outrageous sequences that Raimi and the Marvel team have come up with– I especially liked one of the multiverses that turned characters into globs of multicolored paint– I never lost my reservations about the story.

We open mid-bizarre action sequence teaming Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) with a new character, a young lady called America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) in one of the endless psychedelic cosmic landscapes the Doctor finds himself visiting.

He wakes up thinking the strange world and the young lady was just a dream. Then while attending a wedding, Strange ends up battling a giant squid creature when America shows up. Turns out that she’s all too real and is a multiverse veteran, skipping easily from one reality to another.

Strange decides to help America and reaches out to Wanda Maximoff AKA The Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) for assistance.

Wanda refuses and demands Doc hand America over so she can use her powers to spend eternity in the multiverse where she thinks her children are trapped without her.

I saw the Disney + “WandaVision” series and I didn’t buy her turn to the dark side. Ever. At all. Olsen is saddled with one of the most divisive villain roles in all of the MCU, and despite her skill, I didn’t believe it for one second.

It’s obvious why Marvel would hire Sam Raimi (“Evil Dead”). There’s a lot of plotty hokum built around the pages of a cursed spell book that’s pure “Evil Dead”; this sequel plays like a horror film more than most of the MCU catalog and bears the DNA of Raimi’s scary pictures. Whenever the plot starts eating its own tail, Marvel throws in a handful of classic characters recast as doppelganger versions of established heroes to whet our appetites for future films.

But as much as certain cameos left me kvelling for future films, at some point I felt like a kid at a Raimi magic show, distracted by scenes that may or may not lead to better stories. Like the Andrew Garfield “Amazing Spider-Man” movies, you get the vibe that Marvel sometimes spends too much time set-
