ecently released numbers from Airbnb and the county’s tourism arm show Ithaca’s lodging market continues to grow at a rapid rate, bolstering the city’s recent hotel boom and hinting at a strong demand for overnight stays.

Airbnb bookings in Ithaca grew by 78 percent in 2016, with 586 Ithacans raking in a total of $4.25 million as hosts. In addition to revenue brought directly to Ithacan hosts and local businesses as a natural result of tourism, Tompkins County received a three percent local room tax for each rented room after July 1.

The nu mbers show t hat tourism demand in Ithaca is still climbing, and appears to justify the number of hotel projects that have cropped up in recent years. Further, the 2016 lodging market performance numbers published in the county’s Chamber of Commerce annual report show that despite a higher than average nightly cost, Ithaca remains a popular destination for travelers and compares favorably with the rest of upstate New York and the country.

According to the report, Ithaca has an occupancy rate of 61.3 percent at an average daily rate of $157.00. Both stats are up about 2 percent from 2015, average daily rates showing it is $31 more expensive to stay one night in Tompkins County than one average night elsewhere in the state. Similarly, in terms of Revenue per available room – a particularly reliable metric, according to the county’s VP of Tourism and Public Relations Peggy Coleman – the county saw a 4.5 percent increase to $96.51, compared to $81 nationwide and $67 around upstate continued on page 4

“Here in America, we sort of take it for granted,” says Joseph Prusch, the director of the Cornell University Middle Eastern Music Ensemble, CUMEME. “Serbia doesn’t believe in free speech, and so many people have died because of that.”

In Turkey, learning about one’s own culture and history – outside of what’s taught in the classroom – can be dangerous. A professor at Istanbul University and Ithaca College’s own former visiting scholar, Vedat Demir among many others were arrested in late July 2016 for being academics. Several other countries have similar issues and finding refuge is

challenging.

For some, there’s Ithaca City of Asylum, ICOA, to turn to.

“It hac a Cit y of Asylu m brings writers whose work has placed them in danger to Ithaca,” says Gail Holst-Warhaft, an ICOA board member and adjunct professor in the department of Classics, Comparative Literature and Near Eastern Studies at Cornell University. “Ithaca and Pittsburgh are the only cities in America that offer this opportunity.”

The visiting author stays with ICOA for two years and teaches at Ithaca College or Cornell University.

The current ICOA resident is Raza Rumi Ahmad, a policy analyst, journalist and author from Pakistan. He’s currently a scholar in residence at Ithaca College’s School of Humanities and Science but, back home, his work brought him under government surveillance and made him the target of an assassination attempt.

A Pipeline-Free Answer For Lansing?

I

t’s taken nearly three years, dozens of meetings and one moratorium but, after multitudes of effort from local officials and New York State Electric and Gas, there may be a pipeline-free solution for meeting the energy demands of the growing Town of Lansing.

In a Monday morning press conference, Tompkins County officials announced NYSEG had agreed to consider an alternative approach to addressing local energy needs in the Town of Lansing than its controversial, $17.8 million West Dryden Road Pipeline project, a 7 mile long gas main that would carry natural gas from an existing connection to a Dominion Transmission pipeline in Freeville, tying into the existing main at Warren Road in Lansing.

The solution is the result of a number of meetings between the utility company and a task force comprised of a slew of elected officials, environmentalists and representatives of various economic development groups and, if followed through on, will allow Tompkins County to meet its 2050 energy needs and emissions goal of an 80 percent reduction in fossil fuel use while still allowing for continued economic growth in Lansing.

not completely take the pipeline off the table, officials say that a combination of moral responsibility and technological possibility could prove a way to provide for the current fossil fuel needs of NYSEG’s customer base by one simple strategy: reducing the demand for fossil fuels in the first place.

“2050 is still a really long time from now,” said County Legislator Martha Robertson D-Dryden, to start the briefing portion of the press conference. “[...]We’ve heard from farmers things are really changing. This isn’t theoretical – we feel this is an issue we have the responsibility to address as a county, even if the rest of the world is not moving as quickly as we’d like.”

Though meetings have been taking place between NYSEG and the Tompkins County Energy And Economic Development Task Force since 2015, the plan itself results from a November 9 meeting in Albany between county officials and NYSEG where the company presented a document – acquired via a December 2016 FOIL request by The Ithaca Times – containing ten alternatives to constructing the pipeline, including changes to the building code, construction of an electric compression solar facility, fuel conversions and even modifications to rate structures.

Out of those ten selections, local officials identified a twopart solution to meet the rising energy demands of Lansing while reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. The first prong of the proposal is to build a smallscale compressor station (with a compression power of approximately 60 psi) to prevent the

dropof f of pressu re i n the gas lines during times of increased u s a ge , l i k e on a cold day. This proposa l, if a ll studies come back positive, could become a reality sometime in 2018. However, this solut ion wou ld o n l y g u a rantee service for alreadyexisting customers on the line.

The second prong of the proposal lies in the infrastructure itself, to wean customers off of fossil-fuel reliant heating systems in favor of newer, sustainable heating technologies like electric heating pumps, geot herma l systems and other, greener solutions paid for through the funding that would otherwise have gone to the pipeline. This area may be slightly more complicated, in that upgrades to these technologies – and encouraging their use in new construction – may require a mix of subsidy and education.

“The (request for proposals) NYSEG would put out would be looking for folks to propose ways to incentivize these alternatives,” Tompkins County Planning Commissioner Ed Marx said. “So while the compressor station will only serve existing customers, the hope and intention is through the RFP process, we would reduce gas demand in the area in such a way it could be available to those who have no viable alternative to natural gas.”

For new de velopment s , incentives may be provided but in some cases, may not even be necessary Marx said, adding that many of the newer heating technologies available may actually be more cost-effective than natural gas, as seen in upcoming developments like City Centre and Maplewood, which rely on electric heat pumps for a majority of their heating supply. Though there won’t be any direct subsidies from the county, financing could be provided through NYSEG itself or indirectly through programs available to the city and county,

which already offers incentives through state programs like Energize New York. Organizations like the Tompkins County Industrial Development Agency, meanwhile, have been exploring incentives like tax relief for greener projects, working on ways to gauge the energy use of those projects.

The impact of this solution on rates are hard to gauge as the very nature of the supply and demand of natural gas will be thrown into flux, the variable of energy efficiency thrown into the equation.

“While the cost of the supply might go up,” task force member Irene Weiser said, “Your use of the supply will go down.

We’re hopeful that by improving energy efficiency, it won’t affect rates but it will affect the volume you use and therefore bring your costs down.”

Though the timelines for this project are aggressive, with RFPs for the market-based solutions due by May 19 of this year, Robertson, along with other members of the task force, say the solution they’ve presented is a feasible one and requires more in the way of re education, rather than reinvention. However, it all falls on whether or not prong number one of their solution – the compressor station – is even a feasible answer to the rising needs of the community.

“This is not a slam dunk,” Robertson said. “It’s still under study. NYSEG did an engineering study for the compressor station (to be built somewhere in the northeast sector of its current service area) to see if it would meet the reliability needs of current customers… the study is now under review by the public service department.”

She, and the commission is confident the results will come back favorably and said NYSEG “would not have gone this far” chasing an option that wasn’t viable. However, she was careful to not promise a new pipeline would not be in Lansing’s future.

“It’s important to know the pipeline is not off the table,” she added. “If the public service commission comes back and says it disagrees with the study, that is the responsibility of NYSEG and the commission to ensure its customers have the supply they need.”

Historically speaking, the area’s occupancy rates have long been high, Coleman said, which has fueled higher average daily lodging costs.

Just in the past year, two large hotel projects opened in the city including the Marriott in December and Holiday Inn Express in October, as well as the ongoing Hotel Ithaca expansion. It’s unclear what the effect that influx of more than 200 new rooms will have on the lodging market, but Coleman said they are not planning for a downturn.

“Our goal is to always see year over year incremental grow th,“ Coleman said. “If

we’re able to see at least another two-to three-percent increase comparatively speaking, to the prior year, that would be fantastic.”

T he potent ia l pit fa l l of responding to a grow t h in demand with more construction is overexpansion, creating a bubble by dedicating longterm resources to cater to a need that will eventually dry

up. Ithaca doesn’t need to look very far to see how such a situation can unfold when demand disappears. In the city of Elmira 30 miles south, 2008 brought a swell of money and industry as the natural gas prosperity in northern Pennsylvania spilled over into Chemung County, culminating in occupancies in the city of up to 100 percent in 2010. In the last few years, however, the natural gas industry has seen a steep economic downturn since Governor Andrew Cuomo banned gas mining by ‘fracking’ in 2014.

Gary Ferguson of the Downtown Ithaca Alliance asserted that the community pillars fueling the demand in Tompkins County, namely tourism and education, are sustainable enough that there is little chance

for future deterioration. He also mentioned the “softening” of the Elmira lodging market.

IC Union Sets Date For Strike Vote

The contingent faculty union has decided to hold an on-campus vote on February 13th and 14th, which would authorize them to take action

Ferguson further pointed out the successful Airbnb numbers show the company can effectively coexist with the thriving hotel environment.

Coleman also noted that moving forward, she thinks a keen eye needs to be kept by everyone, from government officials to developers, on economic indicators that would dictate whether more lodging development is needed in the future, and on the value of not simply providing the same thing over and over but striving for uniqueness. There may be a slowing of production, Coleman said, after the Hilton Canopy hotel finishes its construction, slated to begin this spring.

“We want to be smart about

the development, we want to make sure that we can absorb the new development,” she said.

“It is important that we grow in a strategic way so that we are able to maintain good occupancy and good rates as well.”

learn more about their own and their peers’ cultures as well as providing a sanctuary for Middle Eastern students.

“I come from Kashmir,” says Ahmad Rafiqi, a graduate student in the math department at Cornell University and percussionist in CUMEME, “and the music we play is very similar. I was drawn to the familiar melodies and just wanted to follow the group; I was amazed they would let me join without being able to play an instrument.”

“What I’ve enjoyed the most is performing songs from my childhood,” says Doga Tekin, an interdisciplinary studies major at Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences as well as a singer and kanun player in CUMEME. “It’s nostalgic for me. Each performance is an opportunity to share my love for my home with the audience and others in the ensemble.”

Heavy research goes into each set ensuring the fit of each song for the performance and their reflection of current events.

“My intention with every program is to show the common thread of humanity that runs through all cultures and people,” says Prusch, “and to glorify the shared history of nobodies with the hope of preventing the ongoing dehumanization of people, especially refugees, but also women and minorities, regardless of nation.”

This set will consist of songs from Lebanon, Greece, Jordan, Algeria, and Turkey. Songs about foreign police brutality – like Marcel Khalife’s “Asfur” addresses issues in Palestine and the Algerian-inspired “Ya Rayah” about a man tortured under a dictatorship – are mixed with those about a young fisherman’s sad voyage (the Greek sea chanty “I Trata Mas Kourelou”), blooming flowers or feminine sexuality (the Turkish songs “Ayva Çiçek Açmi5” and “Bala Çiçek Acar Bahar Gelende”), and the story of a young woman who gains the attention of a shepherd at a water spring (“Ya Ayn Mawlayitan” by Lebanese singer Samira Tawfik). All of which the ensemble is excited to share.

“It’s a matter of educating and reaching out across our political spectrum,” says Prusch. “Music is one of the key ways of doing that.”

We, like everyone else, published a story. It went viral, capturing the city’s attention for the weekend and, we’re sorry, easily captured the title of the dumbest thing we’ve ever covered. And now it’s made its way into print.

Anyway, The Ithaca Journal says as of Monday, the thing was still stuck in Danby.

Heard&Seen ▶ Building off the success of their Trump piñata, local group Food Not Bombs will be holding an anti-capitalist event with free chili in Dewitt Park on Saturday. I Am An Immigrant I

am an immigrant; I was born in Holland. I became a US citizen at 17. My father was also Dutch; he was a young teenager in Holland during WW2. He saw the Jews leaving their homes and boarding the trains never to be seen again. He heard the Nazis marching on the streets from darkened windows. He ate tulip bulbs and potatoes for nourishment He lived for years without his father or older brother who had joined the Underground Resistance. These images haunted him all his life, and when we attacked Iraq the first time and he saw the bombs dropping, the gentle, philosophical doctor from Holland could no longer deal with his childhood nightmares and took his own life.

We can not let another people be demonized because of the color of their skin, their religion, their nation of origin, their sexual orientation, physical and/or mental challenges ever again.

The vast majority of the millions of Muslims in our country and the hundreds of millions of Muslims in the world are peaceful. We can not judge an entire religion based upon the actions of a few. If we did, Christianity would have been banned 1000 years ago.

Many of the mass murders in this country were at the hands of a white man with an untreated mental illness and easy access to assault weapons. Others were fueled by

However, if you actually look at the numbers, less than 100 people in total were killed in the name of “ISIL,” 3100 if you include 9/11, --none by a refugee family fleeing a nation destroyed by bombs. Compare this with people who die of cancer because they lacked assess to cancer screenings or preventable health care...

As a Christian minister, I take the teachings and example of Jesus’ life seriously. He was always eating and drinking in solidarity with the poor, the sick, the stranger in the land. The story of the Good Samaritan, a despised nationality, is one of several stories in the Bible that highlights the fact that, in the Bible, people of other faith traditions are often the example of how we should behave toward one another. The only time Jesus was angry was when he saw the rich making money off of the backs of the poor in the temple and turned the tables on them. Though homosexuality was common in first century Rome, Jesus never mentions it, but he does tell us to remove the log from our own eye.

The tension in the hallway outside the White House Situation Room was palpable. A full admiral had found a measure of privacy in an alcove, and was repeating “bipidy bumpidy ripidy rumpidy” to himself. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff was pacing, rolling both shoulders forward and backward in a vain attempt to release nervous energy, pausing to shake his entire body from time to time, and the Director of National Intelligence was so intent on trying to memorize lines that he almost knocked over the easel and sign proclaiming “Auditions Today.”

At last the doors to the Situation Room swung open and White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus beckoned to the dozen hopefuls to come in. Seated at one end of the polished table that dominated the room and illuminated with a spotlight was none other than President Donald Trump.

Chief Strategist Stephen Bannon stood behind him, resting both hands on the back of the president’s chair.

“Welcome to the Woodshed! Please have a seat right at the table, folks,” Priebus said, gesturing at the 12 open chairs. “Since the role we’re casting is member of the National Security Council, we thought we’d do auditions right here at the table where the important stuff takes place.” He nodded to a secret service agent, who pulled the room doors closed. “I see you all have your audition packets. Why don’t we start by having each one of you deliver the line on page one? The scenario here is that the president has just signed an executive order banning all Buddhist immigration into the United States and has asked for your input.”

Starting on the president’s left and moving clockwise around the table, one by one each of the supplicants delivered the line, “As you wish, Mr. President.”

Bannon leaned over and whispered into the presidential ear. “I was hoping for a little more fire for this role. Some commitment,” the president said.

“Let’s try harder.”

Ithaca is a microcosm that comes with free warmth. It’s a place that, as a film student, would be a perfect location for a coming of age movie where cigarettes are smoked against walls and bikes are ridden into the local parks.

A place where students are stood on the sidewalk, pretending to be wistful about a time they were not included in, but can pretend that they were.

There’s a random, human-sized cage decorated with butterf lies on Green Street, and it seems it has no other purpose than to serve as a place drunk college kids can pretend to lock themselves in on a Saturday night and forget that they can get out.

There’s a nice little playground on The Commons for the local kids to play on, but I’ll be damned if every time I pass by I have to restrain myself from pushing them all out of the way and reliving my own candy-colored childhood.

I went to a Joan Baez concert last year at the State Theatre, and I immediately felt like shouting, “Fight the man! Free love! Down with fascism!” and starting a crowd chant that Joan would’ve surely turned into a new hit single.

In times like this, the world needs a little more of that Ithaca spirit all together. A little less hate, and a lot more unicycles and laughter.

he first word I think of when I think of Ithaca: corduroy. Is that weird? Maybe. As a New York City being transplanted into this sometimes-frozen wasteland (as a New York City being, one must always be dramatic about snow), my views of Ithaca and the vibrant community may be different than those of, say, someone from rural Massachusetts.

As a student at Ithaca College, however––it’s a whole different thing. I never thought in my college career that I’d see a man performing a magic show downtown in The Commons as if we were in the town square of a Victorian village, but here we are. I never thought that instead of partying (or lack thereof) I’d be standing around testing out different kinds of chili under a small tent surrounded by throngs of people in colorful coats. I never thought I’d hear a mother shout after her child, “Autumn Cloud! Autumn Cloud, get back here right now!” while holding a tote full of what was surely Swiss Chard, but again, here we are.

enjoyed Stephen P. Burke’s romanticized take on the phenomenon of the protest march in last week’s Ithaca Times, The romanticized anecdote that brought me to my laptop, however, was the one in which Burke says that President Lyndon B. Johnson’s surprising retirement, after one and a half terms in office, could be attributed to the huge crowds of anti-war activists vociferating outside the White House from time to time, much to his chagrin and dismay. Burke wrote, “He didn’t say it (the reason he retired) was because of virulent opposition to the war in Vietnam, but he didn’t have to.”

These days, I feel compelled to say, I will muster out to as many anti-President Chowder Head marches as I can attend, so please don’t misconstrue my intentions here. But I recoil from the position that says liberals are right about every other political fault line out there just because we’re morally superior to the opposition and therefore, because it is as obvious as the nose on your face.

In that vein, I was alarmed recently when I heard the director of a national environmental protection group say in a Community Radio interview that it could be a positive thing that President Eggplant was in the White House because now we could count on a really huge backlash on climate change given the new administration was so obviously wrong. If it was that obvious, we wouldn’t need to have any discussion at all.

Furthermore, President Johnson didn’t leave office for that reason, either.

President Johnson retired unexpectedly because he was a classic Type A personality. He looked relatively calm when the cameras were rolling, but when they were pointed elsewhere he was a gruff, obscene, temperamental man, who would lose his temper frequently and work long, relentless hours at a very tough job. He also didn’t take good care of himself. He didn’t swim before breakfast. He didn’t jog at dawn or shoot hoops with his staff members.

He was also a long-time smoker and overweight.

So, when Johnson was considering another run at the presidency with all the wear and tear of the campaign trail and the job that he knew would be ahead of him if he took that route, it occurred to him to ask an actuarial firm to calculate how long he was likely to live.

They added up his diet, behavior, personality, working environment and family history, then told him he would be dead at age 64, sometime, as it happened, during the fourth year of his second full term.

Johnson succeeded a man who had died in office and he decided he didn’t want to put the nation through another trauma like that. Besides, as quoted in an Atlantic magazine article (circa 1971), Johnson told friends before he left office, “I’m going to enjoy the time I’ve got left.”

How long was that? He had the first of several heart attacks right on clue

in 1970, which might have happened earlier had he put himself through the physical strain, gratuitous diet and sleepless nights of a national election campaign. After that, he lost weight, but he still died exactly when the insurance company told him he would in January 1973.

He didn’t retire because we shouted at him, as romantic as that may sound.

Lifton, also supported the pension reform bill that the senate passed last week.

Tom O’Mara NY State Senate Last week, State Senator Tom O’Mara cast his vote on round two of legislation that would allow courts to revoke pensions for state officials convicted on corruption charges. This legislation will face a referendum before voters in November at which point, if it succeeds, it will be amended onto the state constitution.

O’Mara sits on the senate judiciary committee which held a hearing for state appellate court nominee Rowan Wilson on Monday.

Tom Reed U.S. Congress Congressman Tom Reed began last week falling in line behind other congressional Republicans in defending President Trump’s executive order on immigration. “I think this list of these seven nations is reasonable and are clearly hotbeds of terrorist activity over the years,” Reed said on a press briefing last week. “Rather than go through one by one, I think the president’s action here was putting American citizens’ safety first.”

Last Wednesday, Reed and the house voted to disapprove of the Stream Protection Rule which levied strict environmental restrictions on above ground coal mining operations. The house considers another land management policy this week.

Senator Kirstin Gillibrand continued to rail against Education Secretary nominee Betsy Devos last week. “Public schools help all students reach their God-given potential,” Gillibrand said during an executive session Friday. “and public schools are held accountable for meeting the requirements of our Federal education system and essential civil rights protections, but this nominee has vilified public schools.” Devos will likely be confirmed Monday and Gillibrand will likely continue her streak of voting against Trump’s cabinet picks.

The junior senator also released a statement expressing her disdain for Neil Gorsuch, President Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court. Gillibrand said she would insist that Gorsuch meet a traditional 60 vote threshold in the senate; a notion that’s been drawn in to question when Trump told conservative activists he would instruct senate majority leader Mitch McConnell to “go nuclear” should the democrats try to block the nomination.

However, Gillibrand’s statement fell short of saying if she would vote in favor or against Gorsuch.

Gillibrand will have likely sat on a briefing to the Senate Armed Services committee regarding cyber threats on Tuesday.

Charles Schumer U.S. Senate Minority Leader Senator Schumer began last week speaking out against Trump’s temporary halt to immigration from several middle eastern countries. “It flies in the face of a grand American tradition,” Schumer said. “of granting refuge to those fleeing persecution, regardless of their race, religion, or political views. It is dangerous. It is shameful. It is wrong.” The senate considered a formal bill to reject the executive order earlier this week.

Schumer broke rank from many of his colleagues and voted with only five other senators against the confirmation of Elaine Chao for Transportation Secretary. He also voted against Secretary of State Nominee, Rex Tillerson.

At time of print, the senate was set to consider legislation objecting the United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements in the West Bank on which President Obama’s administration chose to abstain.

The same amount of time has elapsed from that snapshot as from photos of the Cornell women’s hockey team winning an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship. To get back there, it has been and will be crucial for Bourbonnais and the Class of 2020 to live up to the expectations heaped on the large sevenplayer class as they push forward into the playoffs and turn around a few “down” years.

“We told them before they arrived here that we were expecting them to make an immediate impact,” head coach Doug Derraugh said after his team swept another weekend of play Saturday afternoon at Lynah. “I think sometimes freshmen come into college programs and they don’t really expect necessarily to be on the power play or be on the penalty kill or be in those big situations.

“And we told them before they even arrived that you’re going to be.”

• • They are and they’ve done it well. No. 7 Cornell (16-6-3, 12-3-3 ECAC) goes into its final weekend of Ivy League competition with a 6-0-2 Ivy record and an Ivy League title that rests in its own hands. The Big Red is in third place in the ECAC with 27 points, a near lock for a berth in the eightteam playoff with a shot at hosting duties if it stays in the top four.

That power play and penalty kill role has gone well, too, with Cornell sitting in the top-10 in the country in both categories. It’s one of three teams that has yet to give up multiple power-play goals in a game, a feat that takes team effort and includes immediate impact from the newcomers.

The freshmen class has provided 38 percent of the team’s 155 points, contributing 33 of the 93 goals. All but two of them have at least two goals and four assists, led

by Kristin O’Neill’s team-lead 11 goals and nine assists for a second-best 20 points.

“We came into an amazing team with a lot of potential,” said O’Neill, who has already set the program record for shorthanded goals in a season with four. “Playing with good players gives you a lot of success and obviously (I’ve) in the past noticed if you play with a good line you’re going to be successful. Kind of everyone on the team plays a specific role and if we all play our role right, we’re going to be really successful as a team, which has really helped the freshmen excel this year.”

• • In a critical victory against then No 8

ranked Quinnipiac Jan. 14, the first goal showcased the immediate “big moment” role Derraugh said his freshmen were expected to take. For the first time in the season, which at times has featured four freshmen on the ice at once, a goal was scored by a first-year player, O’Neill, and assisted by them, with Bourbonnais and Amy Curlew getting points. O’Neill also scored the game’s second goal unassisted.

It was Bunton who got the game-winner, putting one of her season’s nine goals to the back of the net 10 seconds into overtime for the 3-2 victory. The fast ending featured the equal footing everyone on the team has no matter the age.

“We expect high expectations for everyone on the team whether you are a freshman or you are a senior,” said Bunton, who leads the team with 23 points. “But I think that as seniors we really wanted to push the freshmen to be the best they could be. And we saw the potential.”

The game-winner featured the seniorfreshmen connection. Senior captain Kaitlin Doering won the puck on the overtime faceoff and kicked it back to Bourbonnais, who quickly fed freshman Paige Lewis up the boards. Lewis sent it ahead into the circle, where Doering sent a pass to the top of the crease and Bunton put the small crowd at Lynah on its feet as the players shed gloves to celebrate.

That Monday Cornell earned its way into the top-10 rankings for the first time this season and has climbed ever since.

• • A large part of the Class of 2020’s success, as assessed by Bunton, has been the team “everyone’s equal” atmosphere she and her fellow seniors have proudly continued with inclusivity and invites to extra ice sessions. There’s also a chemistry, as much of the class knew each other before getting to campus and some were even rivals in club.

Derraugh attributed it to the work they each put in during the offseason so they showed up at Cornell in good shape and “pushing the upperclassmen as well to step up their game.”

“That was huge for us to be able to work on little parts of their game, getting up to speed on how fast things happen on the NCAA level,” he said. “But they’re all good skaters and all good hockey players so that makes our job easy.”

Many of Cornell players are Canadian U-18 alumni. Two of the freshmen -- Bourbonnais and O’Neill, along with preseason all-ECAC sophomore defenseman Micah Hart -- missed two games at the beginning of January to play for the Canada National

Women’s Development Team, where they won silver in the Nations Cup. National and club teams only get so much practice time, instead using their time to play tournaments on weekends, which creates the most significant change the freshmen found.

“We practice all week just to play two games straight, which is really different,” O’Neill said.

Forward Valérie Audet (two goals, six assists, eight points) said she used to practice two times a week so getting in more practice time has been “really beneficial,” something Bunton can back up with four years of experience.

“In a game you might only touch the puck for 10 seconds and in a practice you’re handling the puck for a whole hour to two hours,” Bunton said. “I think you develop as a player a lot more practicing more where in junior you’re playing a lot more games and you’re not handling the puck as much.”

• • The veteran Bunton is well-versed in making the successful jump from a Canadian club team to Cornell. She earned Ivy League Rookie of the Year and ECAC all-rookie team honors the year the Big Red defeated Clarkson, 1-0, for the 2014 title and its last automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Cornell made it back to the ECAC title game her sophomore year when she tied her career-high of seven goals – three of which were game-winners – but the Big Red lost to Harvard, 4-3. She led the team in scoring with 27 points as a junior, a mark she’s close to eclipsing.

As Bourbonnais, O’Neill and Audet chronicled their vision of staying hungry and growing as players throughout the next three-plus years, Bunton couldn’t stop nodding next to them in agreement. “[The best hockey teams] want to always strive to be more,” said Bunton, whose looking at a future in pro hockey or in coaching. “And I think that’s a huge part of Cornell women’s hockey is we always want to be better and we always want to strive to do more. I think that our freshmen class is going to be the same way and they are the same way. They haven’t gotten complacent and I don’t think they will.”

Derraugh, in his 12th year at the helm at Cornell with a 220-134-31 record, said the nice thing about this particular group is their willingness to listen and act.

“It’s tough as a coach if you have a group of freshmen that you’re telling them, let’s say, to work on their skating, but all they do is shoot pucks all day long,” Derraugh said.

tion. They want to know what they need to work on. And then they’re going out and trying to work on it. And that’s really the key to their success and I think the key to our success this year.”

Cornell has points from 18 of its 19 players and the one holdout is a goalie. The mark ties Wisconsin for the largest percent of the roster (95 percent) earning a point; in a 7-2 win over Syracuse there were seven different goal scorers.

In the month of games since, points were harder to come by and Derraugh stressed the need for offense, cautioning away from pegging the team as “satisfied.”

“They weren’t thinking of themselves as the go-to player or maybe they didn’t think they had to contribute offensively for us,” Derraugh said. “Even though we feel as coaches that they can they weren’t really looking at that as their role. And I had to sort of talk to them about the fact that,

hey, we need you to think like you’re a goal scorer and to contribute offensively. It’s not just good enough to play good defense we need you to help on the offensive side of things too.”

The Big Red scored eight goals over the Feb. 3 weekend, defeating Union 5-1 and Rensselear Polytechnic Institute, 3-2, for the first time in four meetings. And the freshmen clearly heeded their coach’s call, living up to their will for information and growth.

Bourbonnais gave an assist to Hart, a former freshman star in her own right, and O’Neill tallied the final goal against Union.

Curlew came up big Saturday, scoring the first goal (freshman forward Paige Lewis had one of the assists) and assisting on another.

As crunch time approaches, it’s what Derraugh had been looking for more of on a consistent basis from the freshmen crew, which has had upward of 45 percent of the team’s points during different moments and may not have expected it.

“We understood that we were the freshmen and we weren’t going to be the superstars of the team. It was obvious to us,” said Bourbonnais, who has her own fact burst on the Sports Information Department’s pre-game notes.

Cornell is 9-0-1 when she notches a point and 7-0-0 when that point is an assist.

“We wanted to do well, so we wanted to make sure we were living up to coach’s expectation of us when he wanted us to perform,” she said. “We obviously were going to accept any role that was given to us and be happy with it.”

• • There’s a lot to look forward to, beginning first and foremost with the continuation

of this season then transitioning into the Class of 2020’s role in the future. The Big Red have made the conference tournament each of the last nine seasons and are poised to make it 10. In five of the seasons, Cornell has made it to the NCAA tournament with the last Frozen Four appearance in 2012.

It’s outscored opponents 62-41, averaging 2.5 goals per game to the opposition’s 1.6, with the 707-626 nod in shots. They travel Friday to play Yale (10-12-3, 8-9-1, 5-1-1) in a game the Bulldogs need to have for a chance to jump into first place in the Ivy League. Cornell won the first meeting, 4-2, on Nov. 12 at Lynah Rink.

The Big Red finishes its Ivy League schedule against Brown (5-20, 3-15, 1-6) Saturday before returning home the weekend of Feb. 17 for ECAC games against No. 5 St. Lawrence and No. 3 Clarkson.

The ECAC best-of-three quarterfinals will follow with high hopes for the Big Red now and later.

“I think Cornell is on an incline right now; I can see that coming in the future,” Bourbonnais said. “It’s such a good group of girls now. I know that coach is going to continue to recruit the same type of people and that’s going to really help our team be successful.”

More recruiting classes will join the Big Red squad with similar expectations and they’ll likely end up reminiscing about their own first meetings and recruiting pics or gifs as roles evolve. They may not see the ice as clearly as the Class of 2020 has done so immediately, but with talent, learned leadership and avoidance of complacency Cornell may be seeing another shining string of ECAC powerhouse years in its future camera roll logs. •

hen couples tie the knot, many changes are in store, many compromises will be made and many lasting memories will be created. But in the weeks and months before their big days, couples can easily get caught up in the whirlwind of wedding planning, never taking inventory of their feelings until their wedding days have arrived.

Prints with deep meaning at the Johnson Museum

Escaping the Ordinary: Artistic Imagination in Early Modern Prints, Johnson Museum of Art. Exhibit runs through May 28

T

he old prints hanging in the Johnson Museum of Art’s current exhibit, Escaping the Ordinary: Artistic Imagination in Early Modern Prints, are fantastically illuminating: apocalyptic, lush, and mythological. They’re visionary warnings as well. Expressing, in subtle ways, major concerns with anti-intellectualism, religious dogma and social injustice. Artists are of particular importance during times of major corruption and barbarism, functioning in many ways as oracles. The exhibit’s timing is impeccable, running parallel to a new White House administration and its medieval state of mind.

The exhibit itself is a warning, and a reminder.

Included in the exhibit are works by masters like Albrecht Durer, Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Francisco de Goya, in techniques such as woodcut, engraving, etching, aquatint and more.

The detail is mesmerizing and vast, an intense look into a world that appears so ancient and strange. It’s important to reflect on the progress

High School pole vaulter improves and grows

F

or a high school athlete, it can feel like the proverbial “worst case scenario” when your body breaks down and you’re unable to do what you love. I mean, “old people” are doing things like running marathons and competing in triathlons now, and it makes sense for their bodies to break down, but when you’re in high school, it just doesn’t seem right…

For pole-vaulter Nick John, it was a hip injury that brought on the reality check that our bodies don’t always do what we want them to do, but the Ithaca High School senior didn’t need to look far to get some inspiration. His dad, Rich, was featured in this column not long ago for running the Chicago Marathon in sweltering heat, and his mom, Vicki, took up half-marathons and triathlons at age 45, and completed her first marathon a few months ago in NYC. After his hip injury, Nick spent several months working diligently in physical therapy at Island Health and Fitness, and like any athlete, he hoped to get back to at least where he was prior to getting injured.

Last month, that hard work paid off in an

indoor meet in Cortland, as Nick cleared the bar at 14’, 4”, breaking his own personal best by several inches and earning a trip to the Nationals next month at The Armory, in Manhattan.

I asked Nick how long he has been a pole vaulter, and he stated, “I started in 7th grade, and we mostly practiced with the varsity kids but I wasn’t really serious.”

I asked him if he was aware that his dad was a gymnast of some renown, and that drew a laugh from Rich. (Truthfully, Rich competed at Cornell and was the subject of one of my first columns, in 1992. when he was working to keep the sport alive as a coach.) Nick said, “I did some tumbling during some open times at the Finger Lakes Gymnastics Academy, and that was helpful.” I asked Rich if he took to the equipment during the open times, and he said, “I wanted to but they wouldn’t let me!” (I asked if it might have been allowed if Rich, an attorney, had signed a few extra release forms, but apparently not…)

Perpetual division—e.g., good and evil— intensified long ago with the advent of religion, and remains the predominant crux of modern society. While Durer was deeply religious himself, there’s a strong sense that the prints strive for something beyond religious anxiety, aiming towards a more logical and creative way of seeing the world.

Johann Rudolf Schellenburg’s 1785 engraving, Memento Mori: Berthhold Schwarz (The Devil), is prophetic and graphically futuristic, foreshadowing the comics of the 20th century. Berthhold Schwarz was supposedly a German alchemist of the late 14th century, credited with the invention of gunpowder. Some scholars believe he was historical, others think he was simply a legend. In the print, Schwarz is shown flying backwards from an explosion while experimenting with said gunpowder. A haunting (though amused) skeleton lurks in the background. The connection between death and discovery is clever.

Three prints by the legendary Spanish painter Francisco de Goya are vacuums of intensity and spirit. Way Of Flying (181619) is a meditation on the future. A human with a winged contraption is shown flying through the dark night. The image immediately calls to mind Batman and Leonardo da Vinci, with its ghoulish nature and 16

extensively by Matt Scheffler, who coaches at Lansing High, and is an assistant at Ithaca College. I asked him if pole vaulters carry their own pole from meet to meet, and whether the poles can be taken apart, like a pool cue. “No, they are one-piece,” Nick offered, “and they are between 12 and 15 feet long.” I pointed out that new technology has been a game-changer in many sports, and I asked him to bring me up to speed on how these advances have affected pole vaulting. “Initially, the poles were made of wood, and I understand there were some that were bamboo, and then steel. In the 1970’s and 80’s, they switched to fiberglass, and now there are some carbon fiber poles as well.”

The poles, I learned, are rated by the weight of the athlete and the “flex numbers,” and the athletes often let one another try their pole to get a feel for the different options. Nick said, “Everyone wants to see each other go higher,” and his mom added, “I love to see how supportive they are of one another. It’s unlike anything I have seen in any other sport.”

The Semiotics of Empathy Exploring social change at the Johnson

T

he Johnson Museum’s show Empathy Academy: Social Practice and the Problem of Objects is a perplexing one to say in the least. With four artworks constituting the show as a whole, Empathy Academy focuses on feeling as form, in which, as the show’s statement proclaims, process is privileged over product. The show is an experiment — a space for students to explore the functions and processes of contemporary art and their abilities to affect social change and influence through art.

As an outside viewer of the show, the experimental, work-in-progress aspect of the exhibition could lend itself to confusion. The four works included are somewhat disparate, and they may require time and patience to put the pieces together.

Even so, the Johnson succeeds in what both Cornell University and Ithaca College do best: putting together shows and artwork that elicit thought and challenge to its viewers. And for that reason alone, the show is worth a visit.

The show’s largest piece is Untitled 2008-11 (the map of the land of feeling) I-III

by Rirkrit Tiravanija. It is an 84-foot long print that may sound and look familiar, as it was also included in the show The Fire Is Gone But We Have The Light at the museum last spring (reviewed by Ithaca Times’ Christopher J. Harrington, Feb. 3, 2016 issue). But as it is currently displayed, Tiravanija’s work carries a different context than it did previously. A combination of

silkscreen-printed maps, journal entries and notes written on onionskin paper, pink-tinged passport pages and endless arrows, the work narrates the artist’s travels around the world from Madrid to Paris to Bangkok to Shanghai. But, as becomes clear as the story moves along, the specific locations of travel become less important than the emotions involved. While Part I of the three-part series is the most straightforward, Part II introduces maze-like forms printed over the maps and notes, obscuring them. Part III collapses into chaos with starburst lines overlapping one another and arrows curving and wavering eccentrically as yellow marks add to the disconcertion.

As a whole, the print expertly exhibits the experience of traveling: the initial excitement, the disorientation, the cultural shock and the possibility of becoming lost in time.

The print was also put together with the help of 40 collaborators, its creation a social activity in and of itself.

Martha Rosler’s Semiotics of the Kitchen is perhaps the most powerful piece in the show, a performance art video that depicts, as Rosler calls her, “an anti-Julia Child.” A woman stares at the camera unflinchingly as she demonstrates how to use various kitchen implements, from an eggbeater to a ladle. She pantomimes the actions forcefully with bitter reproach. “Rolling pin,” she announces as she lifts up the pin. Then she thrusts the rolling pin forward, which produces a startling, cracking noise as it spins; the woman’s body jerks back from the force.

Psychedelic rockers Water Bears headline benefit

he vision of psychedelic freeness lives strong in Ithaca’s joyful doom conjurers Water Bears. The band presents a unique and stirring sound, equal parts Amon Duul II, Hawkwind and Kylesa. The sludge is righteous, the guitar solos shimmering and the bass and drum attack artsy and grounded. Grab your bandanas and you inner chi, and let these guys blast you into the nexus region.

The band crushes hard and is headlining a Food Not Bombs benefit show this Friday at the Workers Center. With the spirit of the ’60s and early ’70s, the band forges social justice with proto heavy metal and wild creative abandon. The Ithaca Times caught up with lead singer and bassist Mike Amadeo. deepest root of Water Bears was a desire I had to start a project that would be an outlet for the style of bass I wanted to play. Since I began playing bass — roughly 16 years ago, when I was 12 — I’ve been inspired by bassists who are both bold and non-traditional. All of my biggest influences on bass were masters of holding the rhythm while stretching out into melodic territory — and in some cases challenging the basic assumptions of what sounds could come from a bass guitar. Such players include Jaco Pastorius, John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Juan Alderete (The Mars Volta), Les Claypool (Primus), Tim Commerford (Rage Against the Machine) and others. Alderete and Commerford in particular really opened my eyes to the ways effects pedals could be used with bass, so when I had the idea to start a heavy psychedelic band driven by bass, it seemed like a natural first step to explore what was possible as a solo ambient or noise project.

But the idea was always to add members and draw from influences like Black Sabbath, Sleep and Dead Meadow. I only played a couple of shows as a solo project SPONSORED BY

but that initial noise approach continues to influence what we do as a full band.

IT: How’d you guys come together, and what’s your schedule for the band look like?

MA: All the members of the band have played together before in some form or another. Our guitarist, Apple Maggot, and I have been friends for years, and have played together in a few bands, among them Misses Bitches and a psych-punk band called We Are Whaleshark. We both met our synth player/sample master/ sound engineer Drew when Misses Bitches began its collaboration with the Newman Brothers, of which he was a member. Our drummer, Seven, is someone I’d known for quite a while through the Ithaca Underground scene. I first played with him in the hardcore punk band King Sized Pegasus.

We are currently in the process of booking shows for the spring and summer, with a possible tour in the mix. We will also begin recording our full-length debut in the early spring.

IT: You guys have played a few benefit shows in the past and are playing the Food Not Bombs benefit on Feb. 10: I assume social justice and progressive ideas are important to you guys?

MA: Social justice is incredibly important to Water Bears. At our shows you will hear samples of such important thinkers as Angela Davis, John Trudell and Terrence McKenna. Part of the “doom” aspect of our sound is an attempt to provide a soundtrack to what I see as the coming end of our current epoch, a total shift in the way humans relate to each other, the Earth, and the universe. The current trend in the mainstream political climate toward fascism and other far-right ideologies is a death knell from the ruling class, a tightening of their grip, so to speak, as more and more people in our society realize that the rich and their politicians have nothing to offer us. Since the beginning of class societies, the mass of people has been manipulated into laboring to provide extreme luxury for a tiny upper class. First it was priests, then it was kings and now it’s powerful merchants (the bourgeoisie), but soon we will have what we have been fight-

ing and dying for, to gain for millennia: radical freedom. And as Terrence McKenna says, “Radical freedom doesn’t mean giving someone the vote; radical freedom is having the ability to determine our own destiny.”

IT: Do you see a connection between the music you play, the psychedelic movement in the ’60s, and the freeness of music? Do they all relate to the need for an open mind when approaching social and political areas?

MA: We do take a great deal of both musical and philosophical inspiration from the psychedelic movement of the 1960’s, specifically the idea that human society’s troubles are at least in part a result of a process of categorizations of different areas of thought (one category for science, one for philosophy, one for politics, etc.), rather than a holistic approach to understanding the world and our place in it as a species. We try to apply this to how we make music: we do what is honest and allow that to be the thread that forms our sound. Our music is at once directly political as well as a spiritual exercise, an attempt to “stretch out with our feelings,” as the Jedi would say. The volume we play at, the tuning we play in, the distorted quality, are all an engagement with vibration, the energy that connects all things together — Buddhists call it interdependence, the Abrahamic religions call it God and physicists call it quantum waves — but it doesn’t matter what you call it because it’s there. More than an adherence to any genre or style, that is what we are seeking through playing this music, and so you might call that a need for an open mind.

We do not, however, have an open mind when it comes to oppression, to the denial of that connection we are trying to explore.

Cornell Cinema showing nominated Shorts

t’s that time of year when Cornell Cinema screens the year’s Oscar-nominated animated, live-action shorts and documentary shorts. Since these are typically the least seen films on the big night, checking them out could give you a leg up in the Academy Award office pool.

We’ll start with animation (screening Feb. 9-12), and specifically, the one ‘toon short you probably saw. Piper (dir.

hit Finding Dory. It’s the perfect example of what Disney does well: a wordless delight about a sandpiper hatchling learning how to eat and survive by the ocean.

Borrowed Time (dirs. Andrew Coats and Lou Hamou-Lhadj, USA, 7 minutes) ups the ante with one line of dialogue. The piece follows a grizzled sheriff revisiting the cliff where his father, the former sheriff, met his untimely demise. In deference to the title, a broken stopwatch figures in the action.

In Pearl (dir. Patrick Osborne, USA, 6 minutes), a young woman finds a tape recorder in her family car, which is a rusty, dusty hatchback. She plays a song that

triggers memories of traveling the country with her musician father, as well as teenangst car moments that put a strain on their relationship.

Blind Vaysha (dir. Theodore Ushev, Canada, 8 minutes), along with the final entry, has the most distinctive look of the five nominees. A rueful folk tale about a young girl born with two different colored eyes, one that sees only the past and the other, only the future, The story allows us to see what she sees, and the whole film looks like wood-cut stencils designed by Vincent Van Gogh.

Pear Brandy and Cigarettes (dir.

RobertValley, Canada and UK, 35 minutes) is the most adult of the five, and will screen at the end so parents can take their kids out of the theater. At 35 minutes, it’s an epic longer than the other four entries combined. It’s a story about that one rebellious friend we all had, in this case, an unrepentant punk who lives for liquor and tobacco — and what happens when he contracts Hepatitis C and must wait for a liver transplant in a corrupt Chinese hospital. I hope this film wins, but Piper is the popular favorite and may take home the award.

On to live-action (screening Feb. 10 and 12), Silent Nights (dir. Aske Bang, Denmark, 30 minutes) is a heartbreaker about an undocumented immigrant struggling to survive in Denmark. Beset by poverty and racism, and with a family back home, he makes some terrible choices.

It takes about five minutes to figure out Timecode (dir. Juanjo Gimenez Pena, Spain, 15 minutes), in which two security guards on different shifts leave clues for each other on the security camera system. It also has a terrific closing punch line.

In Ennemis Interieurs (dir. Selim Aazzazi, France, 28 minutes), an interview at a local police station turns into an inquisition. A French-Algerian (France had territorial control of Algeria from 1830-1962) born man sees himself accused of protecting the identities of possible terrorists.

La Femme et la TGV (dir. Timo von Gunten, Switzerland, 30 minutes) is about a woman who waves every day at the express train that passes her house. One day, she finds a letter from the train conductor that turns her lonely life upside down.

My favorite film was Sing (dir. Kristof Deak, Hungary, 25 minutes) in which a new girl at school learns the ugly secret about her school choir. Hope it wins.

To the Past and the Future Birds of East Africa at the Kitchen Theatre

T

here is a woman, Marion, whose life has been constant flight, more at ease with solitary and the birds she studies in the wild than the mess of human intercourse. But late in mid-life her heart has been caught by Jack, an earth-loving shambling hippie type. Wendy Dann’s new play, Birds of East Africa, opens with her sudden widowhood.

Then there is her college best friend, Stephen, who has been nesting for years with Nick. Stephen, a dancer, is all hyperkinetic, chatty, announcing his feelings constantly in a sort of East coast semi-neurotic way; his mate Nick laconic, slow-moving. Relocated to Las Vegas for Stephen’s career they’ve recently married and bought a house. Nick is facing increasing mobility issues with his progressing MS. There’s a stepson as well, Daniel, kept at the borders out in L.A.

by Marion, despite his constant calls. He turns out to be another earthy, holistic type you’d swear had arrived by skateboard rather than by Zipcar, when he finally arrives.

And flitting through this are two birds/dancers‑—melding the passions of Marion and Stephen—who carry the metaphoric weight of the play (and transform into lab assistants and airline agents in Marion’s dreams.)

All are rendered with precision and vibrancy in Rachel Lampert’s bouyant world premiere production at the Kitchen. With the combination of Steve TenEyck’s evocative lighting; Lisa Boquist’s quirky, colorful costuming; a tender score from sound designer/composer Grant Carey and Tucker Davis’s alternately lilting and staccato choreography, the play feels always on the verge of taking wing.

The play’s main study appears to be grief, of loss both actual and impending, and the difficulties of moving on. Also at stake is how life alliances are made. A story Marion retells, of the hornbill and the mongoose, and their life-long symbiotic relationship yielding food and guardianship from predators, has resonance for all the humans.

Dann mixes strong characterization with an elliptical style of scene construction. Marion’s major life events are all mainly offstage—her journey is one of narration, memory and dream. Stephen’s story meanwhile keeps jumping back in

time to all the crucial turning points of his meeting Nick, hearing the diagnosis, the proposal, the present. There is a pushpull about who’s story is supposed to propel the narrative, which is never quite resolved on the dramaturgical level.

Leah Kaminsky shines as Marion, simultaneously unmoored and seeking, wry and whip smart. Obviously used to fending for herself, Marian is somewhat awkward in needing help and connection, each moment lovingly detailed by Kaminsky. Marion, having sold Jack’s

house, if not its memories, is literally in need of a pièd a terre. (Dann evokes this ongoing negotiation between solitude and relationship, flight and home, particularly well.)

Daniel Petrow limns an overcompensating Stephen, full of a daffy charm, always trying to fill up the silences. Petrow’s feet, trunk and hands are in constant motion; he has a special gift for playing his scenes lightly without sacrificing the emotional undertow.

As Nick, Gabriel Marin is the shadow to Stephen’s light; slower-moving, seemingly less impulsive, but more prone to take on the risks involved in creating a relationship. Marin lets the scene come to him, serving as anchor in this acting partnership.

Jacob Goodhart adds a mix of trembling hope and laid-back optimism as Daniel, a wide openness that flows around the older Marion, Stephen and Nick in an almost magical manner.

Alternating in glorious sweeping rapture and tetchy observations, dancers Jeremiah Porter and Jeremy Swift make for an exotic and enchanting pair of birds. •

Transforming Your Life A book of hope and education

I

n November Antonia Demas, a Cornell PhD and longtime nutrition educator, received a phone call from an old friend in Hawaii.

For her entire adult life, she said, Demas had been working as a food literacy educator, working in a sort of prevention program to get kids enthusiastic about eating healthy and making good decisions with their diet at a young age without lecturing them or punishing them. For her, in the classroom, diet is a curriculum - not just a menu - and her life’s mission was to encourage fluency in the way of healthy eating, not just a taste or a preference.

For Katherine Orr, her friend on the other line as well as a marine biologist and illustrator, this language was one learned by other means.

For decades in her accommodating home of Hawaii, a dramatic shift in the way its people ate from decades before annexation, from a local organic diet to a more Americanized version rich in preservatives, sugars and sodium, had taken a dramatic toll on their health and welfare. Children, because of their diets, began to develop adult diseases such as adult-onset diabetes, which slowly changed to type 2 diabetes once its prevalence outgrew the name. It was a phenomenon similar to one documented

by Cornell nutritionist T. Colin Campbell, whose claim to fame arose from studies on the eating habits of China’s rural poor, whose diets were cultivated locally out of necessity, rather than for trendiness or outside influence. In his study, he came to the unexpected conclusion that certain cancers came from a specific type of diet and therefore, certain diseases could also come from drastic departures from a healthy diet.

Though a study well-known by practitioners like Demas, Orr was none too familiar with the science of food, unaware of the effects these drastic changes in diet could have on an individual’s well-being. Until, several years ago, it came to affect a member of her own family.

That’s when Orr started writing.

Orr wrote a book about a child like the one she knew, a young girl who through her diet, developed diabetes and, despite her doctor’s efforts, learned to cope, healing her disease not through medicine but through a drastic change, returning to an organically-based diet.

Self-published and excited with her accomplishment, she brought the book to a conference of doctors to present her work. Seizing on the criticism of the medical community the book,

unfortunately, was not well received.

After a quiet few years, she called Demas, who left for Hawaii in November to offer her help. Over the course of a week, the pair rewrote the entire book, framing the language in which it was written in a way not to offend anybody or appear like they were condemning one way of approaching treatment of the disease versus another. They honed the focus of the book to promote wellresearched, fact-based information to provide people with the information, rather than implicating a certain group or coming on too strong and, with Demas’ help and influence, helped hone the

science Demas has researched through the years and marry it to the effective stylings of Orr’s storytelling. What they got was Surprises In Mili’s Suitcase, the story of eleven-year old Hana who feels relegated to live with type 2 diabetes until her Auntie Mili comes to visit with a suitcase full of “surprises” that hold the key to Hana’s disease, resulting in a ‘’Great Food Adventure’’ in which they discover the fun of learning about, growing, preparing, and eating new fruits and vegetables.

The bottom line of the story was to make the message accessible, Demas said, to present a positive view of what, to some, may seem like a radical shift in the modern American diet. But the science, she said, is sound.

“The main thing I was concerned about was straying from any type of judgement,” Demas said, “any kind of what I call the ‘vegan crazy’ attitude, which is a total turnoff. Anything that was too strident in the message we tried to avoid.”

It’s through storytelling, Demas said, that may be the most effective way to impart her message. In her teaching, she had always made a strident effort to make the curriculum as fun as possible, to introduce children to the cultures around the cuisines she presented and stoke enthusiasm among children in what they were eating.

“My approach has been to lay out all the information, try to make it as factual as possible and as fun as possible,” Demas said. “We make good healthy food seem like punishment to kids and I’ve found if kids get to touch, taste and smell the food, they get to be creative with their friends and really learn to enjoy eating it.

It’s all about how you approach it.”

Though the book is a labor of love, its production is really about education.

As such, Demas said any proceeds from the book (available on Amazon) will go

toward Demas’ nonprofit Food Studies Institute, an organization dedicated to improving the health of children and the planet through food-based solutions.

A woman in Hawaii, Kathryn Orr, is an artist with more than 20 books to her name as well as a marine biologist, specializing in sealife, volcanoes and conservation. She hasn’t written anything lately, but she was personally affected by the development of diabetes and managed to absolve it through eating a plant-based diet. The book itself, set in Hawaii, builds on this philosophy and ties itself in with the history of Hawaii. “There’s a wealth of information out there that shows you can beat this disease without all these drugs. You just have to watch what you eat.” Orr wrote the book and initially, self-published the book several years ago. Michael Silverman, a.k.a. That 1 Guy, is a musician of surreal definition. Forging experimental soundscapes with jazz, funk, prog, world music, and utter insanity, Silverman is a complete and singular experience. His homemade instruments, The Magic Pipe, The Magic Boot and The Magic Duck, are Dadaist art structures that function as magical sonic vessels. The Magic Pipe in particular, is an electronically rigged pair of machined aluminum pipes connected by movable phosphorus bronze joints.

The man in black is back. Scott Moreau and his Died Drunk Boys well be paying homage to one of country music’s greatest legends: Johnny Cash. With two performances on February 10 and 11, you’ll get a chance to drift back in time, with stories from Cash’s past, and songs like “The Ring of Fire” and “Walk The Line.” Moreau has been playing Cash for nearly ten years now, and the resemblance is striking. uffalo punk rockers Lemuria have an exacting approach. They offer up songs as rigid and clear as the Buffalo autumns they grew up with. Solidness is their forte. Building sculptural compositions, in jaunts of pop, indie, and punk, they dive and soar. Lead singer and guitarist Sheena Ozzella, bassist Adam Vernick, and drummer Alex Kerns are a trio like an old and wise tree: every pattern essential, and every branch alive.

Though the band members all live in different parts of the country now, they’re still very much propulsive and fresh.

“It works out,” noted Kerns. “It’s been seven years now in different cities, and you know the weird thing is, I think we’re more productive now. When you live

around each other it’s so easy to cancel practice, or change plans. When we get together now, we have a specific mission, and only a certain amount of time to accomplish that mission. We’re more focused, and that goes a long way.”

Lemuria are a DIY band in the truest sense, moving at their own pace, and never feeling a particular need to produce something they don’t want to. The band has released a plethora of 7-inches and splits in their 13-year history, but only three full-lengths. The formula is exact though, and the EPs wind up having a complete sense to them. They’re whole and distinct. This is a band that’s driving down their own road: an interstate of totality.

“I think we put out all those 7-inches just to remind people we’re still a band,” Kerns laughed. “We definitely like to take our time with full-lengths. Writing songs and then taking them on the road, is really our way of figuring them out and making them better. And when we finally do record, the songs are pretty much representing their true nature. They keep changing over the years, so it’s just a matter of taking our time and figuring them out.”

The band is sneakily tight, turning corners like progressive behemoths.
