thaca College has a drawn up a new argument against an effort by the Town of Ithaca to remove fire protection from its campus: it’s unconstitutional.

So says a letter from the college’s attorney, Brody D. Smith of Syracuse-based Bond, Schoeneck & King in a letter submitted to the board at its public hearing on the proposal Monday evening. In the two page document, Smith argues the college’s proposal to remove the 670-acre non-profit from its fire protection would not only violate the New York State Con-

Under statutes in both documents outlining various protections for non-profit organizations from paying property taxes – like churches or schools – and a stipulation for all those institutions to have equal protection under the law, the school’s legal representation argues that removing the school from the fire protection district while keeping on other organizations like, say, all the churches and schools in the district, would be discriminatory, Smith calling the efforts by the town “unjust, unfair and unconstitutional.” continued on page 4

An Immigrant’s Awakening A benefit concert for Carlos Gutierrez’s organization, The Tompkins County Immigrant Rights Coalition, will hold a concert to raise funds to protect the rights of immigrants and refugees on Sunday, February 26 at 6 p.m. at the Unitarian Church at 306 N. arlos Gutierrez grew up among the northern coast of Chile, in a sunny city of 200,000 citizens.

As a young man he enjoyed life in a large and loving family, but was indifferent to school,

unable to focus on his studies.

Carlos recalls his “awakening” as a young adult: “ I w a s a b o u t 17 a n d a friend introduced me to a new group of people,” said Gutierrez. “Kids my age were talking about changing the world, about politics. My school’s student government was addressing short budget policies in education. Paulo Freire (Pedagogy of the Oppressed) and other Latin American authors were writing books about our world, books anyone could read and understand… many classes were taught by university students. As he began to listen and to read, Gutierrez’s whole attitude about life changed.

The effort, both sides have noted, was an effort to circumvent the college’s non-profit status in order to extract voluntary payment for the college’s reliance on the town’s fire services, where a large proportion of its calls are related to happenings on campus. While the town has argued the college should pay for a service it utilizes at a frequency far greater in proportion to the rest of the town, the college argues it was already voluntary payments to the town through means such as a PILOT agreement on its Circle Apartments and a donation of the very land one of the town’s fire departments sits on, more than compensate for the services it

“If the town persists with its unconstitutional demands and threats,” Smith wrote, “Ithaca College may have no choice but to reconsider these existing voluntary tax payments in the future.”

Yet in the past the Town of Ithaca, though tabling the proposal for further examination, has been confident in its freedom to redistrict their fire protection limits as it pleases.

The town, in the past, has noted there is precedent in other municipalities for what it is trying to do. In the City of Syracuse, the local government has begun asking the hospitals for contributions to fire services for “the same type of reason as we ask the colleges,” Ithaca’s Town Supervisor Bill Goodman said; they make up a significant portion of tax exempt property in the city. In the past, the town has noted that in its research, it has found no precedent or block to redrawing the lines of its fire district.

Logically, those supporting the effort see nothing wrong with the town’s efforts. In a

More than ten months after his last public visit to Ithaca, Congressman Tom Reed made a late-night visit to his regional office in downtown Ithaca last Thursday to meet a group of close to a dozen constituents who, according to some in attendance, had been camped out since that Tuesday.

Following nearly a week of lobbying from local activists upset over his lack of a presence in Tompkins County and even a request from fellow media outlet, The Ithaca Voice for a sponsored town hall meeting, Reed arrived in Ithaca directly from Washington following a day which included meetings with the president and a week filled with deliberation over the future of the affordable care act and a number of various causes related to the environment.

The meeting came after days of protest from various liberally-minded groups organized online who, through relentless campaigning, postcards and sit-ins (replicated throughout the rest of New York’s 23rd district in several municipalities and, somewhat notably portrayed on Fox News, Angelica, New York), rallied to bring the region’s third-term congressman to the region for a meeting with Tompkins County constituents for the first time since a meeting with Newfield residents last winter.

“To you I apologize,” Reed said, mid-way through the latenight meeting. “You are sincere in your efforts and you are passionate about what you’re doing and I respect that, if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be here.”

meeting of the Town Board in early January, former Town Supervisor Herb Engman, who pushed for a similar effort more than eight years ago, urged the board to continue forward with its efforts, saying he sees absolutely no difference between paying for sewer, water, and fire protection services, further pointing out Cornell university makes a $750,000 annual contribution to their fire protection, making Ithaca College “the only major educational institution locally which doesn’t do that,” he said.

The proposal, though tabled for now, has already been up for a public hearing though, given the way the town’s government works, will likely be up for another public hearing if the proposal is brought back to the table. If it moves forward and succeeds, the town’s fire department would still offer the college fire protection, however it would likely bill them after the fact.

in some capacity that allowed her to provide or coordinate a unique and positive education experience with, hopefully, real-world implications.

“I fell into my role with YES but it was perfect for what I was looking for,” Stokes said. “It was just a happy accident, but it’s been a perfect fit.”

Beverly Stokes has been working with the Ithaca Youth Bureau for about six years, moving her way up the ladder from a temporary summer employment position to program coordinator for Youth Employment Services, or the YES program.

Stokes said YES has been around for about 40 years, helping Tompkins County teens aged 14-20 who are just getting introduced to the workforce.

By the time high school students around the age of 16 are starting to apply for jobs, many of them are at a disadvantage since older workers with more experience and more education are applying for some of the same jobs. At its core, YES exists to level the playing field.

“We provide job experience and work readiness training and our basic mission is to prepare teens for job success and prepare them for opportunities,” Stokes said. “We’re helping teens get jobs […] it’s a very wide range of various skills that we’re helping them to develop, and we just try to develop them into successful adults.”

Through a variety of ways, YES deals with 250-300 teenagers each year. For teenagers from lower income families, there is also a subsidized employment program through which the Youth Bureau pays their wages while they work somewhere else. Certain attributes needed for real-world success aren’t taught in schools, Stokes said, which is where YES specializes.

“You can get through school without learning some of the communication and problem solving and personal responsibility skills that are going to make you successful at your job,” she said.

Stokes, who said she became involved with the group after becoming interested in “nontraditional education” while studying music education at Ithaca College, assumed the coordinator position about 18 months ago. She had long wanted to work with students

“I respect you but hopefully, you respect me,” Reed said, expressing his commitment to continuing “constructive dialogue” between him and the small audience who stuck it out for his approximately 11:30 p.m. arrival.

that morning, expressed appreciation for the congressman’s appearance in Ithaca, however impromptu, and expressed a hope that a conversation could be continued in the future saying that Thursday’s talk was a “positive stepping stone” in relations between Tompkins County and its congressman.

Reed, in closing, said he would continue to hold further town halls in the future and, as Reed told the Ithaca Times earlier this week, the congressman’s staff would be looking into a town hall for Tompkins County sometime this spring.

Until then, Tompkins County has but a beginning of a new relationship with its congressman in the early days of the

Trump administration.

“This has been a very positive discussion tonight, there hasn’t been screaming, there hasn’t been shouting,” Murtagh, who expressed the his desire for a fuller, less impromptu town hall in the city, said. “I’m confident that if we were to have a larger town hall that I know there are people in this community that could moderate that well.”

“What I would hope,” he later added, “is that this very kind of informal spontaneous conversation can serve as a prelude to further dialogue.”

This may sound an extreme take.

It may sound like we’re assuming too much. But after years of seeing the City of Ithaca portrayed on television as a haven of vanagondriving hemp wearers and, most recently on the morning talk show circuit, a city of extremists willing to literally sleep in his It haca of f ice, yea h, maybe we should step up the rhetoric.

It ’s not as if we’re coming from a completely uninformed place in reaching this conclusion.

Ithaca and Reed go way back, starting with his defeat of homeg row n Democratic candidate in Nathan Shinagawa. Since then, Ithaca has been an ef fe c t ive prop i n

helping to stir the supp or t of t he v a s t s w at h s of Republican voters across the 23rd district, pointing to us in the corner of the region and saying, frankly, to the rest of the district: “it’s us versus them.”

This was evident in the attack ads on longtime county legislator Martha Rober t son du r i ng her campaign for congress two years after Shinagawa’s narrow loss. Even John Plumb, or “D.C. John,” as he was described in his most recent campa ig n, wasn’t safe from t he tag despite living close to 200 miles from here, being tied in with the “extreme Ithaca liberal” tag in a rather absurd, but

he sun shone brightly on the brick exterior of Number 89 Market Street in Corning on a recent seasonably warm February Tuesday. Inside, Congressman Tom Reed, representing New York’s 23rd Congressional District was at work with his staff, setting up Town Hallstyle meetings in all the loyal venues of his fiefdom. Ashville, Cherry Creek, Fillmore, Great Valley. One by one, the various corners of New York ’s Southern Tier would be favored by Citizen Reed’s presence. The mood was festive. Nobody seemed to notice when the shadow of an owl f litted across a window.

There was the click of the mail slot and the f lop of letters on the doormat. A minion retrieved the items and brought them to the Honorable Thomas Reed. He tore open an envelope and extracted a check. “This is in rubles,” he snorted. He f lipped over a postcard. “Hm. I see Ivanka’s clothing line is available on the NRA website now.” When he shook open a third envelope, though, his face went from red to the grayish white of old porridge. “Extremists!” he sputtered.

“What is it, Chief?” asked a staffer.

quiet. When the mail arrived, Reed got up and got it himself.

With a strangled cry, he tore up another envelope with an Ithaca postmark.

Thursday came, and there were four letters. No constituents were visited that day. Meetings were cancelled. Representative Reed stayed in and nailed up the mail slot. “See,” he explained to an intern through a mouthful of nails, “if they can’t deliver them, they’ll just give up.”

“I’m not sure that will work, Sir.” “Oh, these people’s minds work in strange ways, kid. They’re not like you and me.”

On Fr id ay, t welve i nv it at ions arrived. As they couldn’t go through the mail slot, they had been pushed under the door, slotted through the sides, and a few even forced through a small vent in the office bathroom.

Reed stayed in again. After burning the invitations and setting of the fire alarm, he boarded up the cracks around the doors, humming tunelessly as he worked.

Saturday, things began to get out of hand. 24 Ithaca invites found their way…somehow…into the office. Reed spent the morning cutting them into confetti with a pair of scissors.

On Sunday morning, Reed came into the office looking tired and rather ill, but happy.

I attended ​your Town Hall meeting in Fillmore last weekend, and was deeply disturbed by my experience. As liaison to Ithaca’s Disability Advisory Committee, I was appalled at the location selected for your meeting. Not only was the venue inappropriate for the numbers of people who attended, which I estimate to be approximately 300 people, it was also not ADA compliant. The elderly, disabled and infirm who came to see you and speak to you, were literally left out in the cold for hours, standing in the mud and ice, requiring assistance to try to get close enough to hear and be heard. Does Reed trust Donald Trump so much as to be derelict in his duties to protect the people of his district?

Or is Reed afraid of Trump, or afraid of what truths his tax returns might reveal? Reed had a chance to make sure the President wasn’t selling out America. Instead, he voted no. We need a representative who will stand up for us, who is not afraid of the President or of the truth. Tom Reed is not that person. He chose to look the other way, and leave us all in the dark.

ast week Tom Reed voted against a House Ways and Means amendment to make Donald Trump turn over his tax returns. One of the duties of Congress is to provide a check and balance to the President, and that includes knowing if the President is acting on our behalf, or for his own gain.

Without Trump’s tax returns, Congress has no idea what conflicts of interest the President has. Reed and Congress cannot fulfill one of their primary responsibilities without this basic information—which all other recent Presidents have provided voluntarily. Given that Trump has refused to provide his returns, has refused to divest of his holdings at home and in multiple foreign countries, and given his associates’ suspi-

Ski trails are marked and unmarked trails through woodlands and meadows, not wider dirt roads used by snowmobiles. 61 Ski trails were made for skiing, many made by skiers putting in thousands of hours to create and maintain trails. Ski etiquette is that if on foot, you walk to the side of ski tracks (or to the side of the trail’s center if there aren’t yet ski tracks). This preserves tracks or snow for skiers. By walking on tracks, one creates a very irregular surface that usually prevents gliding.

However, for those who treasure whenever there’s snow to go cross-country skiing, with a climate of greatly decreased snow and cold, the pleasure of gliding on snow is deeply satisfying to my mind, body and spirit. I hope you’ll consider adopting ski trail etiquette to contribute to this deep pleasure and thorough physical workout.

Some of those provisions included lessening juvenile detention sentences, alleviating red tape on charitable organizations that provide bail, minimizing criminal charges of marijuana possession and preventing employers from asking about a candidates criminal history on an initial application.

Lifton also hosted four town hall meetings during the week, all of which gathered full houses.

Before taking questions for constituents, Lifton pointed out several points of contention with Governor Cuomo’s proposed budget including higher education funding, local mandates and clean water infrastructure funding. However, the former teacher spent the most time speaking out against the Governor’s lack of support for education funding. This columnist would also like to apologize for his three-stooges-esque entrance at the Caroline town hall. (Editor’s Note: A chair may or may not have collapsed.)

We’ve clearly given Reed a lot of help over the years: you have to admit, this whole gerrymandering thing from 2012 was probably the best thing that could have happened to him: he may have 30,000 Ithaca votes he won’t be able to count on, but at least he has some material for his advertising. But now, it’s time to return the favor for all we’ve done for Mr. Reed.

As has been documented in local media, Reed hasn’t held a town hall in Tompkins County that was open to the public in more than a year now, dating back to one he held in Newfield. On the campaign trail, he visited Cornell, sure, but that was once again as something of a prop, leaning on the district’s largest institution of higher learning to give his thoughts on college affordability.

Last week after a long time away, he came to his Ithaca office late at night to meet with a dozen or so protesters who had been staying in his office for quite some time. This was quite a gesture, especially considering how “out there” Ithaca is and, considering how set in his beliefs he told Fox And Friends the other day he is, it was quite the time commitment for someone who doesn’t see these “extremist” folk waiting to talk to him as “constructive,” as he said on the show.

Notwithstanding, he owes us a visit. A real visit. He’s used Ithaca to work for him all these years so now, he should at least pretend to be working for Ithaca. If not, well, maybe we can put our letter writing to better use and support a certain redistricting bill that’s almost certain to die at the committee level right now. If Reed can’t handle the travel commitments of his massive district, maybe we could even get him to sign it.

Not only would it make his job much, much easier, but it might also be the only way to carve us out of the corner we’ve seemingly been placed in.

Lifton, as with all her colleagues in Albany as well as Washington, are on break this week.

Tom O’Mara NY State Senate The state senate continued holding public hearings to edit its version of Governor Cuomo’s 2017 budget this week.

The Environmental Conservation Committee, of which Senator O’Mara if the chairman, met for the first time this year last week. In that meeting, several bills sponsored by O’Mara passed through committee including a resolution that would require paint manufacturers to manage disposal of unused paint instead of local municipalities.

Congressman Reed dominated local political discussions, appeared on multiple cable news programs and dominated headlines both local and national.

The house spent the week passing legislation to roll back environmental rules and reform Veterans Affairs practices. The Ways and Means committee of the house, of which Reed is a member, voted not to require President Trump to release his tax returns. The congressman says he voted against the measure because he does not believe the government should set a precedent of invading the privacy of its citizenry, including the president. However, most of the news from the congressman’s front wasn’t made in Washington, but rather in the 23rd District.

Trans-Atlantic Reading Partnership

n a corner office in Rev Startup Works with the wind whipping outside, Brigid Hubberman – in a relative calm – f lips through a picture book. Warm amber colors and bright blues litter the pages, depicting children from all different corners of the world. Children with dark skin, smooth hair, short bodies.

The picture book All the Colors of the Earth has become an integral part of Hubberman’s project, Children’s Reading Connection (CRC). After about 20 years of community literacy work, she’s beginning a new organization, aiming to connect children and families to books.

“We know libraries change lives, and when families start reading together, the younger the better – it sticks,” Hubberman said. “[One boy] I read with would go to the page with the child that most looks like him and pat that: the hair that looks most like his. And that’s such a beautiful thing.”

Hubberman, the founder of the Family Reading Partnership (FRP) and former executive director, is developing another organization; this one with an international outreach. Though CRC is currently housed in the business incubator Rev Ithaca Startup Works, the organization aims to make impacts on a global level. CRC will primarily work outside of Tompkins County, focusing on a state and national level. But when CRC goes beyond the United States, Hubberman welcomes 8

a challenge.

After working for nearly two decades at the FRP, Hubberman sought to expand beyond the local area. Her work at FRP focused on the Tompkins County area with similar goals to that of CRC: to get babies and children reading as soon as possible.

Creating a culture around talking and reading to children in Tompkins County was the beginning — founding CRC was the next step to enriching early-childhood literacy.

South Africa was to be its first stop.

A longtime member of Ithaca’s vibrant intellectual community, Hubberman established the connections she needed to launch CRC on a global scale. In a serendipitous string of events, Hubberman was connected to John Volmink, a former Cornell University professor who is working in South Africa to improve education quality, indirectly through retired Ithaca City School District teachers Rita Rosenberg Barber and Marilyn Ewing.

“It came up in a conversation with Marilyn,” Rosenberg Barber said. “She shared with me that John wanted to have someone come to South Africa and support his efforts in early literacy, and he knew of Brigid. And the stars aligned, and we were going to South Africa in January.”

Town, where she and 34 others gathered together with one common goal: to ensure all babies in South Africa begin their lives with literature. Surrounding a baby with loving words and fruitful books helps every child grow into a thoughtful and engaged individual, Hubberman said.

“It’s those experiences with vocabulary, background knowledge and understanding the world – and it’s also about love and that time spent together,” she said. “The learning in social and emotional contexts is really the only thing that works.”

And the work for CRC didn’t stop at the forum: it continued with a week of meetings, during which Hubberman gave out copies of All the Colors of the Earth to attendees. Access to literature can be difficult for parents in South Africa, due to socio-economic inequality. The country is still combatting the lasting effects from the apartheid, which is the main hindrance in South Africa’s education system. White children’s education is consistently funded more than black children’s, and graduation rates for black students still remain painfully low.

While Hubberman took the opportunity to encourage reading to all children,

she also understood her trip was a learning experience. Her effort was organized

by DG Murray Trust, an organization founded in 1979 which Volmink sits on the board of. The organization is dedicated to supporting and funding literacy efforts in the country — a springboard for CRC to learn and grow from.

“Everyone who heard ‘loving words’ are repeating it like a mantra,” Volmink wrote in an appreciation letter on the effort. “I am sure [Hubberman’s] visit and insights will now begin a new journey into education for us.”

As she became more familiar with South Africa’s education plights, Hubberman was able to apply what she learned to CRC. Something the forum touched upon was research about brain development from early childhood and its lasting impacts. The research they explored came to one conclusion: when babies grow up in a home with a diverse vocabulary and access to new words, their minds develop in a more positive atmosphere. Some babies hear as many as 32 million more words than infants who are not surrounded by language, Hubberman said.

“It’s the number of words and it’s also

the complexity of the words and the richness of what these words are,” she said.

“Children that are hearing lots of words are hearing six positive words to one negative word. … Children who aren’t hearing as many words hear two negatives to one positive. And we can’t underestimate the power of that.”

Hubberman determined that if children are unwilling to think they can learn, they won’t learn. Positive words encourage education in young children, and these words help develop a sense of confidence around learning. With that knowledge and the experience of working in South Africa, she came back to the U.S. ready to cultivate and implement CRC. Hubberma n has been work ing on models for different communities across the country. Each community can then adopt and tweak these models to fit its needs. She takes the goal of education and literacy, matches it up with community and library engagement, and creates a template for communities to follow.

Her models extend beyond programs: they aim to reach a cultural level. What programs sometimes fail to do is implement long-lasting change and modify current systems, Hubberman said.

“Often we can be programs rich and systems poor,” she said. “We have a program for this and for that, but if you think

about the programs and the systems that are in place, if we can help systems and support them, then that changes a lot at once.”

The model Hubberman is perfecting is called Baby and Me at the Library, which she plans to begin as a state-wide effort.

Baby and Me at the Library encourages libraries to adopt a “baby’s first library card” initiative, which will also connect babies with a book when they are born.

The template focuses on bringing families to libraries as early as possible, which will develop a relationship between families and literature.

CRC’s initiatives are designed as “howtos,” and they leave room to grow and adapt depending on the type of community using the models. While one version of Baby and Me at the Library may work in Ithaca, it may be completely different for a public library in Buffalo or Albany.

The models challenge libraries to take a system that’s already in place and enhance it with CRC’s initiatives.

“And there are so many great ideas out there, but often there are literacy organizations where people reinvent the wheel,” Hubberman said. “There are so many fabulous and wonderful librarians who already care about this, and it’s our rule of connecting each other and serving as a catalyst for this. You’re helping people

With the conference and website as the near future for CRC, Hubberman also plans to follow up with the communities she worked with in South Africa. Her efforts impacted families in Cape Town, and Hubberman will continue her initiatives now that she’s inspired the communities.

While in Cape Town, Hubberman was exposed to some of the 11 languages spoken throughout South Africa. One word, she said, has a certain importance to John Volmink, in how it encapsulates the ideas behind CRC: “ubuntu.” Ubuntu roughly translates to “because you are,” a phrase that describes our interconnectedness.

“Having everyone everywhere see this issue [of children’s literacy] is crucial,” Hubberman said. “This is a public health issue — this is about the future of our society. There is so much at stake, and how can we not do something together?”

In April, Hubberman will be presenting at the New York State Library Association’s Youth Services conference in Ithaca where she will get the pilot program for Baby and Me at the Library started. With the opportunity to present at the conference, CRC is looking toward implementing Baby and Me at the Library initiatives and kicking the models off across the state.

CRC’s website, when completed, will act as a clearinghouse and main hub for communities to learn about these templates. Public libraries from anywhere in the world will have access to Baby and Me at the Library, and they will be able to learn from each other to form connections and conversations around books and children. Collaborating and learning from libraries across the state and country helps to build camaraderie among families and communities from diverse backgrounds.

“If I was to say what would be Brigid’s top priority for CRC, it is to ensure that all children and all families are included,” Rosenberg Barber said. “It’s the foundation for relationships between children and their families and their communities.

While raising four beautiful, healthy children, Carlos has somehow managed to fulfill his political goals: Carlos has worked for NYS Office of Children and Family Services guiding incarcerated teens in secure facilities, and also worked for the NYS Department of Labor.

Carlos served on the Leadership Team of the Workers’ Center and currently as a staff member he provides Occupational Safety and Health training, as well as outreach and assistance to immigrants and other vulnerable workers.

Carlos was a founding member of the Latino Civic Association of Tompkins County, incorporated in 2002. Latino art exhibits, film festivals, dances and music events are shared in the community throughout the year, culminating in Latino Heritage Month, which runs midSeptember through mid-October each year.

LeDuc served as team captain and led the Ivy League in assists last year, and Marshall will wrap up her career as one of the top players in Cornell history, with top-five numbers in several statistical categories. She is just the second player in Cornell women’s basketball history to record 1,200 points, 500 rebounds, 100 assists, 100 steals and 50 blocked shots in a career.

After their weekend sweep (Cornell also beat Dartmouth on Friday) Cornell will travel to Penn and Princeton next weekend. The Big Red will bring a mixture of momentum, confidence and of course, that love of the game as they work to extend their season.

During the girls’ swimming season, I wrote that the Little Red had been on a mission to reclaim the top spot in Section IV, and they did so in convincing fashion.

Last weekend, it was the Little Red boys’ turn to try to bring the title back to Ithaca, and they made it happen.

Ithaca went into the meet at Owego Free Academy hoping to win seven or perhaps eight of the twelve events, but they won nine for good measure.

E

very athlete has a reason to step onto the field, court, mat or diamond, or to dive into a pool. Sometimes, that reason is just for the love of the game, sometimes it’s for one’s teammates, and sometimes it’s for the chance to just keep playing.

When I spoke to Ithaca High grad Taylor DePalma (who is now a senior on the Cornell women’s basketball team) at the beginning of the Ivy League schedule, she told me that the team was very excited for conference play to begin, because for the

first time, there would be a 4-team playoff to determine the league champ. In years past, if a team was clearly not going to win the Ivy title, there was one less reason to play with a lot of passion. Of course, the love of the game and the connection with teammates are still there, but there’s something about playing for a title that keeps the fire in the belly burning.

On Saturday, the Big Red welcomed Harvard into Newman Arena, and given they needed a win to stay even with Brown for the final playoff spot, the fire was there.

Never mind that the Crimson came in at 6-2 in conference play and had won the previous 18 matchups against the hosts, they were in the Big Red’s house and as Cornell’s coach Dayna Smith would say after the game, “Harvard, obviously, is a very good team and has a great tradition but each game is its own.”

That Zen-like “Be Here Now” perspective is a valuable one to embrace, and given Cornell had given the Crimson all they could handle in Cambridge (losing 62-59), the hosts were ready to go. When the smoke cleared, the Big Red had come from behind to beat the Crimson 57-52.

I promised an update on the Ithaca High boys (STAC champs!) and their Section IV tournament schedule… The Little Red has a bye on Feb. 24th, as Binghamton will face Elmira to fill out the Final Four.

On March 1st, Ithaca will play the winner of that game, and the championship game will be played on March 4th at the Floyd L. Maines Arena in Binghamton. (The other teams in the tournament are Horseheads and Corning.)

It has already been a stellar season for the Little Red, as they won their first STAC championship in 45 years, but when a team pulls it together like this team has, they just want to make it last as long as possible. Ithaca has beaten all of the other teams twice, and the lone blemish on their season was an early loss to Binghamton.

Since then, it has been all “W’s,” and the Little Red want a few more.

The Ithaca Landmark Preservation Commission had rejected several previous proposals. The ILPC exists to defend the designated historic parts of Ithaca from losing their soul and charm, challenging developers to fit into Ithaca instead of the other way around, and felt several aspects of the project would violate the historic district’s environment.

“I feel like we’ve done a good job of checking off every box of every stakeholder here, and I’m hoping this is it,” Travis said during the meeting.

In their final comments, all ILPC members expressed some hesitation at the size and materials used, but thanked the developers and architects for their compromises and months of work.

The public comment period featured a range of opinions, some urging action on the site after so much time, while others arguing the size and fit of the building are a violation of the neighborhood’s aesthetics. A few commenters mentioned their initial opposition before coming around on latter iterations of the blueprints.

Local developer Todd Fox also weighed in, delivering a message via Facebook prior to the meeting that encouraged the passage of the construction project while acknowledging its imperfections.

The statement went on to argue that the

current building is a “local eyesore,” and that despite the new project’s drawbacks, it would be a marked improvement to the downtown landscape.

Size had been a major roadblock for the ILPC, asking several times for a smaller proposal. The higher-f loor setbacks did seem to satisfy some of the other attendees of the meeting, who thought the plan had made positive strides.

“It’s in a place that feels much more appropriate than it has,” Mackenzie JonesRounds, of the city Planning Board, said.

“I don’t find the size to be oppressive.”

The project had almost been scrapped entirely a few times, with Travis Hyde President Frost Travis expressing a desire to withdraw his company from the effort if their November design was not approved.

It was not, though Travis and his colleagues felt they were close enough to keep trying.

Nancy Medsker, a longtime critic of the project who owns the neighboring property, said she was disappointed but glad the fight was over. She said she still thinks residents will regret the outcome once the Oak trees begin disappearing as a result of construction, but that the compromising had made the project more tolerable.

“This had a lot of creativity, in the design and the solutions,” she said. “It’s workable, and they’re a great developer.

But it’s unfortunate that this big building is going to be built in this historic district.”

Seph Murtagh, who serves as the liaison between the Common Council and

the ILPC, said he was unsure of whether or not the project would pass when he came to the meeting, but once he heard the final comments and the general discussion, he knew it would be approved.

Murtagh said though the process was arduous, he is happy it had to go through the ILPC since the project is much superior to what it was nearly a year ago, when the debate started.

“The one thing that’s undeniable is [the developers] have done a really good job

of responding to the feedback,” he said of the many critiques and responding tweaks the project has undergone. “But that’s the process, that’s what [the ILPC] is supposed to do. It took like a year, but we have high standards in Ithaca, and that’s important.”

fter having children, Math and Movement program founder Suzy Koontz found a gap in the public education system: there was little to no variation in math teaching methods, leaving students to fall short of their potential for success. Through several attempts of practicing with her daughters, she developed a method that worked: teaching math through physical activity.

“Unless we do something about it, we won’t have people that will be our next generation of doctors, dentists, engineers, lawyers; the list goes on,” Koontz said.

“Almost every profession involves math, even if it’s just a little bit. Unless we have students that are competent in math, our society is going to go down.”

This is how the Math and Movement program developed.

On June 24 the nationwide program officially opened its first learning center in DeWitt Mall Suites. Students and their families from Ithaca and the surrounding area were invited to attend the launch of this new space with an open house that introduced the participants to this new learning style.

Math and Movement, which acts as a supplement to existing curriculum, is a kinesthetic, multisensory teaching method that incorporates physical exercise, stretching, cross-body movements and yoga to improve students math competency. It introduces the fundamentals of arithmetic and early algebra concepts to children through teacher instruction combined with labeled floor mats that guide their movements. Students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade are the program’s main audience.

Approximately 1,000 schools and companies have used Math and Movement and over one million children have participated in the program overall, Koontz said.

“The best part about [this program] is to see the children engaged in math and movement. They get so excited to learn,” Koontz said. “We’re able to convince children that learning is so much fun, and all they have to do is just keep playing the game. It’s incredible.”

The open house included four agespecific workshops, including “Fun with a Math Rug,” “Marvelous Multiplication

by Sixes,” “Telling Time is Terrific,” and “Fractions are Fantastic.” Several children and their families attended, including Jessica Gavurnik, a mother of two from Trumansburg.

“Both of my children do quite well in math,” Gavurnik said, “but it’s an area where a lot of children struggle. The public school system falls short in accommodating

Through the program, Gavurnik hopes that her children, 8-year-old Hana, and 6-year-old Genevive,, will be able to have fun and experience a different way of learning. She said eventually she would try to implement some of the exercises learned at the open house in her own home.

“It’s a great learning tool, and they don’t always offer these sorts of things in public school. They just don’t have the capability,” Gavurnik said. “This is a nice creative approach to learning math and numbers.

It’s like a foreign language for some people.

This taps into the other side of the brain, the more creative and visual part.”

Koontz, the author of several math education books, found children’s skills to be generally improved. Both the students and teachers notice a difference almost immediately. These results are presented in the Math and Movement research studies, which measure the outcome of each session. For example, the program hosted a symposium at J.D. George Elementary School in Verona, New York where thirdgrade students worked with teachers for four sessions over a two-day period. On average, there was a 56-percent increase in the student’s scores over that time period.

As an Ithacan, Koontz hopes this success to spread through Tompkins County.

With the sponsorship of Dryden Mutual Insurance Company, the program has hosted more than 40 Math and Movement events this school year throughout New York State, which has allowed 3,000 students and their families to participate.

“When a student realizes that they can learn information, they are transformed.

Ithaca is home to me, and I want my community to be absolutely solid with all math and reading concepts to achieve their fullest potential,” Koontz said. “Having students be career or college ready by the end of high school is absolutely essential, and this is possible in a community like Ithaca.”

ment (FLWM), where he now serves as president, and serving on Ithaca’s Board of Zoning Appeals and the Board of Public Works, along with Ithaca Public Education Initiative and the Ithaca Re-Use Centers boards, among others.

McCormick said t hat while being on so many boards that deal with specific city policies and details gives him a chance to put his Master’s degree to good use, his daily work at the wealth management firm doesn’t differ as much as you might think.

“Much of the critical thinking skills and aspects behind city and regional planning can be applied,” he said. “We’re forecasting, we’re planning for the future, we’re looking at return on investment…

Being on the boards with the city because I have a graduate degree in that, it’s one place where I have an education that I can apply and give back to the city using it.”

Beyond the enjoyment he gets out of the volunteering, McCormick said he has made it an integral value of FLWM to interact with the community. The company registered as a benefit corporation as well, which under New York state law, McCormick said, obliges FLWM to “do right by our community.”

“One of the ways we are able to do that is give back time,” McCormick said. “I do that through volunteer work, but otherwise I do it because I enjoy it. Ithaca is a pretty unique and incredible city, so one of the ways I feel like I can pay it forward, or pay it back even, is to get involved.”

“What this award means to me is that I’m being recognized for the work I’ve put in and my dedication to social justice work,” Rusk said. “And I hope that it would also encourage other people to become active in the fight for human rights and social justice.”

After being accepted to Cornell in 2007, Rusk said he stayed in the area for the people. Before working with the Office of Human Rights, he had a job at Legal Assistance of Western New York, where he said he found his passion for human rights by dealing with benefit disputes and housing rights.

Rusk said while he relishes his job and t he relative anony mit y it wou ld normally include, he is honored that his work has made enough of an impact to be rewarded. He said he can get discouraged at times with the community he loves, but that frustration is the very reason he is here; fighting the discrimination that appears in Ithaca, subtle or overt.

Since moving to Ithaca, Maher has been able to attract people both fresh out of Cornell or Ithaca College as well as from outside the area as well, filling his team out to 10 employees. The business also secured a spot in the START-UP NY program early in 2016, which provides some tax relief and other benefits to new companies.

“I had actually lived in the Bay Area for a long time, I had definitely built up a lot of friends and connections there,” he said. “But at the same time, I think moving to a place like Ithaca was a great relief to get out of some of the stress and side effects of living in an area like the San Francisco Bay.” Business Leader of the Year

John Guttridge has been one of the engines behind this shift, along with his development company Urban Core and business partner David Kuckuk, while also running Brightworks Computer Consu lting on West State Street.

Guttridge returned to Ithaca in 2005, dropping out after a successful but unfulfilling year at Northeastern University, and started Brightworks. After his lease expired at his rented office space, he began looking at places around town to expand his business, and ended up collaborating with Kuckuk to form Urban Core and dive into the real estate world in the process.

Guttridge said part of his interest in bringing business to downtown is personal, driven by his desire to help his hometown and create as comfortable a future for Ithaca as possible, a factor amplified by his two children. He said after the colleges, downtown is one of the main attractions to Ithaca and he feels like there are achievable improvements that could help Ithaca thrive more than it has.

Shortly after founding Ursa Space Systems in 2014, Adam Maher decided he was fed up with the stress and expense of living in the San Francisco-Silicon Valley world, opting to pick up his business and head back east to Ithaca, the city of his alma mater Cornell.

ong before Miles Davis swirled heads with the swift and dexterous Milestones, and Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius lifted the heavens with the transcendent Bright Size Life, there was a group that recorded the very first jazz record: the Original Dixieland Jass Band (changed to Original Dixieland Jazz Band (ODJB) in late 1917). The group’s hazy and wild jazz single “Livery Stable Blues”—recorded in 1917—was the first jazz recording ever released, and the band subsequently went on to create a plethora of jazz standards and influence the world’s musical horizon.

Colin Hancock—a jazz musician and student at Cornell University—is a guy with a big heart for this early style of music. He’s the founder of The Original Cornell Syncopators—a group devoted to playing the music of ODJB’s early recordings—and has pursued this musical form with an honesty and perseverance that is righteous and bold. His group will be celebrating the 100-year anniversary of ODJB’s first jazz record this Sunday at Barnes Hall, by performing the entire 1917 recording session. The concert will be narrated by Ithaca jazz veteran Joe Salzano, and will include stunning visuals and period dance

take it out and spread its gospel the world over via the Phonograph Record—another relatively new phenomenon at the time. So when I’m playing it—besides the thrill of playing this kind of jazz which has always captivated me—knowing that I’m playing what caught America by storm 100 years ago is a pretty cool feeling as well.

IT: Do you think jazz has retained elements of its roots in the contemporary

CH: Absolutely. In fact, Pop music has also taken a lot from early jazz through form, intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, coda (ABAB type stuff), not to mention chord changes and formations. Also, the messages in most songs remain either about love or dances.

IT: What’s your musical and life background and what got you interested in jazz?

CH: I first heard early jazz when I was seven years old and my dad was cleaning out his CD collection. I noticed there were three CDs: one of Bix Beiderbecke and the Wolverines, one of Louis Armstrong and the Hot Fives, and one of Sidney Bechet.

They all had these different looking black and white cover photos so I wanted to listen and hear what they could sound like because I was intrigued. From the minute I heard “Fidgety Feet” by the Wolverines I knew this was something that would change my life and I never stopped listening. For my eighth birthday my dad got me a pawnshop trumpet and I started taking lessons that summer. Then in High School I was lucky enough to be a part of the St. Stephen’s Jazz Band in Austin that was made up of some very musically adventurous peers of mine and directed by Mark Kazanoff. This group helped me develop a musical “ear” and playing in an ensemble as well as discover “groove” (man I miss those guys). I also started listening to early jazz more, diversifying the number of instruments I could play, and playing around Austin with several groups including the East Side Dandies and the Texas Serenaders, and I got to play with the California Feetwarmers in LA through my friend John Levin which was pretty awesome. By the time I got to Cornell, I knew I had the tools and knowhow to start my own group.

IT: How’d the musicians in The Original Cornell Syncopators come together, and is there a lot of communication and collaboration involved between the group?

CH: Paul actually introduced me to the Rhythm Section players, Amit Mizrahi (piano) and Noah Li (drums), whom I had met up with on the side and discussed the project with. Both were very motivated about it and have been a huge part of the group’s development. I know Rishi Verma from the Cornell Big Band (he’s lead trombone), and Hannah Krall (clarinet) through jazz and one very interesting combo performance last year.

She actually stepped in when we needed a clarinetist/saxophonist at the beginning of the semester and has done a wonderful job. We all have GroupMe which is quite active every day talking about music, performance or just keeping each other updated with what’s going on in our crazy Cornell lives. We also consulted three jazz icons who were of incredible help with learning the style and info on the band, and so we’ve designated them “Coaches at Large”; Dan Levinson of New York, David Sager of Washington DC and the Library of Congress, and Hal Smith of Arkansas.

IT: Do you listen to contemporary jazz, and what’s the connection between jazz’ roots and the modern forms?

CH: I do listen to some contemporary Jazz, my favorite groups being BADBADNOTGOOD and Hiatus Kaiyote. I also am a big fan of contemporary musicians who play earlier styles of jazz like the Jon Doyle Swingtet, Andy Schumm, Mauro Purro, Michael Miquaid, and Dom Flemmons. I also listen to contemporary Rap artists like Drake, The Weekend, and 21 Savage.

IT: Do you feel there’s an element of visual art to the early Dixieland style jazz?

CH: In “Dixieland” jazz yes, however the concept of “Dixieland” came up in the ‘40s during a revival period that was unfortunately a little corny at least aesthetically. While musicians in the ‘10s and ‘20s like the ODJB would’ve been dressing smartly, the ‘40s and ‘50s Dixieland revival unfortunately saw the rise of the stripped suit jazz band. So for this project we’re trying to be like the original band with 1917 period dress—suits with no ties and the collar up (Hannah is also going to be in a period dress). But, let me say the ODJB also did have its moments of corniness too; it’s part of showbiz.

IT: Do you guys plan on doing any original material in the vein of The Original Cornell Syncopators?

CH: We have already done a few original arrangements including a great one of Tony Jackson’s “Pretty Baby”. As we’ve progressed the band has definitely had more and more input on the charts I bring too.

It’s my hope that in the coming semesters we will be playing as many originals as period pieces.

IT: What’s the best part of being a part of this project?

CH: Playing music with my fellow students in always a treat, but these guys really do a lot more than read dots on a page or play a solo here and there. The guys really genuinely care and love their craft, and that just makes this music come alive. It’s what got me interested almost 14 years ago, and it’s what keeps me loving it now. •

NYC rapper ELUCID is a master of the form

rooklyn rapper and producer ELUCID weaves an unmistakable tapestry. Like an abstract painter floating airily along the periphery, he mixes a dense rap lexicon with original and transcendent instrumentation. His poetic verses liquefy lengthwise within complex noise, jazz, soul, and electronic soundscapes: a total vision and engaging prism. He writes like he breathes air: natural and smooth.

“As far back as I can remember, I’ve always been writing,” the rapper said.

“Growing up in NYC in the ‘90s hip-hop was alive everywhere you went. We’d go down to West 4th and check out poetry slams and watch people get completely original and real. I started taking writing seriously around the age of 16.”

ELCUID, who also raps in the duo Armand Hammer with Billy Woods, is something of a realist. Yet, his style is so defiantly arty that the world of the unconscious is perhaps his most prominent angle. Where 2016’s full-length Save Yourself was a deep and moving whirlwind of contemporary politics, deft jams and experimental sampling—the recently released Valley of Grace (January 27, 2017)—is a denser and more complete psychological print: a zone of reflection, trance, and possibilities. He wrote and recorded the record while visiting Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa.

“I wasn’t expecting to write the album,” he admitted. “Once I got to South Africa something really changed. I had never traveled that far and there was this totally new feeling to the whole experience. It sparked my imagination in a profound way. As a black American in

South Africa, there was an intense feeling of being an outsider. I felt like an alien.”

Valley of Grace is fluid and isolated in an amazingly particular way. Challenging and spirited, its essence is underground, and ELUCID is able to equal his mind’s rhythms to the fresh and intense new surroundings he’s experiencing. The record floats in cubist spaces vast and sundry, the poems are diverse, and the overall density is existential. ELUCID is the ultimate voice of his world—the dreamer and the dreamscape. His environment is the key to all connection.

“Everyone is very well versed and engaged politically in South Africa,” he said. “Even the sanitarian workers there were extremely detailed in their opinions. It’s totally different than it is in here in the US. All the songs on Valley of Grace came from these conversations. I’d wake up and have some coffee—go for a walk, talk to the people—and then go home and write some verses.”

Growing up in a musical family exposed ELUCID to a wide range of styles and possibilities. His dad was a funk and rock bassist, and his mom a substantial singer; but it was an underground technique that engaged his exploratory tendencies.

“I think turntablism was the first experimental sort of stuff that I really locked on to,” the rapper explained. “My uncle is a DJ and watching him melt varying musical styles with an individualistic bent, made me appreciate what you could do with music. I was able to connect the dots.”

Working with such abstract instrumentation is something ELUCID has continuously challenged himself with. The angles of these forms are so wide that it takes a special talent to make the totality a whole and complete universe. His earlier stuff was more blunt, more compact and perhaps more efficient than his new material; but it’s the latter that truly ascends: an amalgamation of perception, risk and ultimate creativity.

“My methods vary, but ultimately creation depends on the circumstances,” he noted. “Sometimes the beat starts the rap I’m working and I just follow the bassline to make the thing work. But other times I feel like when you’re working from a beat you’re forced to sacrifice words to make everything fit, so there can be a downside to that process. You really just have to keep pushing, keep grinding, and keep believing—and hopefully you’ll figure it out.” •

Hardcore is Here to Stay San Diego band brings the truth

T

he hardcore band World of Pain call the city of San Diego home. It’s here in the layers of pavement and glass, and in the waves of the great Pacific Ocean, that the quintet derives their special powers. They forge a sharp and defiant sound that spasms with death metal precision and whip-snapping ferocity.

They’re old school in an existential sort of way. Living and raging the scene with an organic and natural expression. This is

what hardcore is all about: physicality and interaction.

“I think community is an absolutely integral aspect of the hardcore scene,” lead singer Noah Friend noted. “To me hardcore is an out of step sub-genre that thrives off of community. Think of the days when social media was almost nonexistent, yet shows were always packed.

Without community being the driving force behind it, I doubt there would be any scene beyond a bunch of bar bands sharing a similar message. The community is the movement.”

World of Pain leads this community with fervor. Their shows are a blistering rage: a balance of technique, energy, and speed. Friend is a front man on a mission: the driving force of a band devoted to a primitive and tactile art from. Hardcore is about action. The fans in the crowd are as dynamically fundamental as the individuals creating the music. This is hardcore’s unique charm. It’s music that pulls the inner sphere of one’s emotions to the forefront of their total dimension.

It forces you to be, to feel, and to move.

Bands like World of Pain keep a sort of dying naturalness alive.

“Personally, I believe that before social media really exploded, most hardcore and extreme metal scenes were really at their peak,” Friend explained. “But as technology advanced, the hardcore scene, along with many other underground music scenes, kind of hit a wall, and the hype just sort of died down. In the late ‘90s and early 2000s, there were countless venues across San Diego County, and nowadays there are only a few. It’s definitely nothing like it used to be, but I have begun to notice with the younger generations coming up that there has been a growing interest and even sort of revival in the realm of heavier hardcore. I’m hoping to see it come full circle.”

Hardcore shows can get violent, but typically it’s an emotional and energetic (non-violent) sort of aggression that rules the grounds. It’s a fine line (a broken nose is a broken nose), but the physicality is ultimately part of the allure and manifestation of this sort of actual interaction.

Friend sees the intensity as a natural part of the experience, a sort of extension of the way real life works.

“Hardcore has always been known as an outlet,” he explains. “Depending on the riffs you’re playing, it could mean the difference between kids wanting to scream out their lungs and do countless stage dives, to letting out all of their aggression and swinging in every direction.

as long as the music invokes an emotional reaction, it always will. Of course there’s a difference between going to a show and straight looking for a fight—which is never a good thing—versus simply just losing yourself to the music. Its unfortunate that at times you might catch an unsuspecting fist or kick; but it’s just part of the game— we’ve all been there and I’d say that it’s just sort of the weeding process in which people will decide whether or not the scene is for them—or at least the type(s) of bands they are going to see.”

With a background in sociology, Friend has a unique prospective on hardcore music and the greater political universe surrounding it. Though he doesn’t consider World of Pain the sort of band that openly endorses politicians or specific ideologies, there is certainly critical thinking woven in the music that is meant to challenge and engage the listener.

“If anything, I just want kids to take a step back from whatever they are subscribing to, and really analyze what they’re being fed,” he said. “People get sucked in so easily and literally tune out from reality—we need more kids doing actual research on issues before having a knee-jerk reaction. Go to the source, read transcripts, read statistics, get educated on whatever you want to pursue and make sure you’re ready to stand up for it to the best of your ability. Don’t just let someone else feed you their own narrative. Create your own based off of your own thorough research.”

World of Pain bring the truth hard.

They headline a show packed to the brim with some real and organic hardcore bands this Friday in the Parlor City—so get out there and a get a dose of reality. •

A Heart of Blues

Tab benoit is a blues master and social activist

Cajun roots despite their advice, blending a variety of blues styles, but most often playing Delta blues. Benoit’s soulful guitar solos are impressive in Nice and Warm, and they only improve with each record. Critics have even gone so far as to compare Benoit to legends Albert Collins, Albert King and Jimi Hendrix.

Benoit’s bold electric guitar parts are complemented by his vocals, both smooth and gritty, creating a Delta blues style that ranges from reflective and sincere to dangerous and exciting. He’s also known for his captivating stage presence as he’s been playing live for years.

Benoit gained significant popularity in 2006 with Brother to the Blues, recorded in collaboration with Louisiana LeRoux. The album received a GRAMMY nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album, and from there, the recognition kept coming. The following year, Benoit was honored as the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year and Best Contemporary Male Performer at the Blues Music Awards in Memphis, Tennessee. In 2010, he

ab Benoit is bringing his Cajun-infused blues to Ithaca. The GRAMMY-nominated singer, songwriter and guitarist is currently on tour playing his “swamp pop” and blues jams across the country.

Hailing from Houma, Louisiana, Benoit learned the blues as a teenager in Baton Rouge and New Orleans clubs, where he played alongside older regulars. He formed a trio in 1987 and began touring around the South two years later, slowly moving farther across the country to play concerts on his own. Benoit recorded his first album, Nice and Warm, as a solo artist in 1992. Twenty-five years later, he’s now played hundreds of live shows featuring music from a total of 18 albums.

After hearing his guitar chops, producers and promoters encouraged Benoit to shift from blues to rock music to reach a wider audience. He stuck to his

was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, and in 2012, he won three Blues Music Awards: Best Contemporary Blues Male Artist, Best Contemporary Blues Album (for the 2011 record Medicine) and another B.B. King Entertainer of the Year award. Benoit was named Best Contemporary Blues Male Artist yet again in 2013.

Despite his busy tour schedule and frequent recording, Benoit devotes time to activism. In 2003, he founded the nonprofit organization Voice of the Wetlands (VOW) to spread awareness of the receding coastal wetlands in Louisiana.

As leader of the nonprofit, Benoit organized the VOW All-Stars, a group of eight other New Orleans musicians who all collaborate to write songs like “Louisiana Sunshine” and “Bayou Breeze,” expressing concern about environmental issues.

Benoit also starred in an IMAX documentary, Hurricane on the Bayou, which showed the effects of Hurricane Katrina and called to restore Louisiana’s wetlands.

The film played in the United States, Canada and Europe throughout 2007. In

2010, Benoit received yet another award, but this time from the Louisiana Wildlife Federation; he was given the Governor’s Award for Conservationist of the Year.

As both an activist and a musician, Benoit’s passionate personality is evident in his conservation efforts and wailing guitar solos. He translates that passion into blues, creating powerful music perfect for live shows. •

The True Americana

The DixieKats honor the past and create the future

avid Plaine and Mark Sammo, the two faces of local New Orleans jazz outfit The DixieKats, have a habit of playing off each other’s sentences in conversation.

Over the course of a forty minute interview, Plaine, the band’s leader and saxophonist, and Sammo, its percussionist, go blow-for-blow in the dialogue, building off each other’s thoughts in a natural progression of information enough to leave an interviewer’s mind close to blank once they stop talking.

Then again, it should be expected of them after twenty years playing together.

The pair had arrived to promote what they consider a true milestone for the band; their new album, Struttin’ With Some Barbeque, an enthusiastic romp of juiced-up jazz and gumbo standards true to the depth and mastery the group has developed its following on over the years.

Struttin’ With Some Barbeque itself presents two separate landmarks for the DixieKats. Not only is it commemorative of their 20th year playing together, but it stands as something of the first legitimate studio album for the band. Though it sticks to the traditional method of simply pulling off the band’s live recordings to capture the unfiltered enthusiasm of the band’s performances, the group overdubbed their tracks over the course of “1,000 or so” hours in Sammo’s Matrix Studios to add some additional shine and sparkle to their already-refined repertoire.

They may have brought in an extra vocalist in the past, subbing in fresh vocals over the live track, Sammo said, but with this album they aimed for something a bit different, adding some percussion effects to bring a more vintage feel intended to transport the listener to an open-air jazz club in New Orleans’ French Quarter; some tracks have even retained the applause from their audiences.

obscure Sugar Cane Williams And His Cane Cutters that tells the story of a parade collision between two “tribes” of Mardi Gras Indians (Black carnival revelers from different neighborhoods, each dressed in Native American garb).

It’s a generally festive, call and response kind of tune, an infectious jig to which the DixieKats lend their own decidedly fiery, flamboyant hand; the group brings a Bo Diddly-inspired, rhythmic trance of thunder and bossanova lightning to the mix, all powered by a skillful horn section sounding off a far cry from the subtly-accented swing of the 1953 Checker Records pressing.

The inspiration to begin the album with that song, Sammo said, was to present something of a mission statement: it’s a tune which captures not only the finer attributes of the band’s chemistry and its chops, but of its commitment to the culture of the mystic of New Orleans, its inner strifes and reconciliations.

“They’re having a little war in between them, you know, over who’s ‘best,’” Sammo said. “It’s a war of dress, a war of words, a war of music. It’s a way they came to subsist with one another, rather than killing each other. Which we could take a big tip from, it seems.”

Their sound itself, Plaine said, is more or less a product of the band’s longevity: together for years, their arrangements of the “American songbook” form themselves; the way they bring their own flair to otherwise public-domain tunes weaves a unique take on traditional, Cajun flair via a chemistry that is only learned, not taught.

“We started out as a centennial band, celebrating the great Louis Armstrong,” Plaine said. “During that experience, we had people come from all over the region who might be touted as the best at their instruments... we grew beyond that, bringing New Orleans and Ithaca together in people’s minds and now have evolved into the DixieKats.”

“The job for us to make the arrangement be unique, and special,” Sammo said.

But the band, now two decades in, hints that their enthusiasm for the genre could be seen as an effort of preservation.

Traditional Cajun music, the attitude which rocked the cradle of the blues, isn’t one played by too many other groups out there. Their music is a testament to true Americana, one of the surviving relics of the true, all-American culture immune from accusations of any real sense of cultural appropriation: the music they play is a true product of circumstance, evidence from the great American melting pot which infused numerous diverse cultures into something unique, original and most importantly, ours.

As such, they’ve taken up something of a banner for their style of music.

Recently uncovering a brand of Carolina swing called “the shag,” a high-stepping stalwart of southern culture they hope to incorporate the style into their setlists and expose a whole new generation of folk to get excited over it. Down the road, they’ve set their sights on a more internationally-minded goal, travelling abroad as something of an ambassador of truly American culture that, at times, can be overlooked in today’s “tomorrow is already yesterday” culture; they want to pit America’s flag boy against everyone else’s, as Plaine jokingly suggests, even going as far as to reach out to the state department to make it happen.

“It’s full-on Americana,” Sammo said. “That is our claim to fame when it comes to music. We’re not playing Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky or any of those folk. We can listen to ‘em and love ‘em, but this comes from the great American songbook... we are an American tradition.”

This year is the band’s third year playing the United Way’s Mardi Gras fundraiser at Lot 10, something the band takes very seriously; even locking into a multi-year commitment with the organization’s Fat Tuesday celebrations.

They hope to outgrow Lot 10 by next year, so from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, be sure to show up in full-swing whether for dinner or dancing. The event is free and open to the public. •

born and living in Italy, whose works are “whacky,” according to O’Dette, as they are experimental, innovative and bizarre. In the English tradition are pieces by Robert Johnson and Daniel Bachelar, music in a later style that breaks away from Elizabethan clear lines and moves toward more emotional rhapsodic writing. Johnson’s Pavin is a good example, while O’Dette considers Bachelar’s variations on a French song that close the program one of the “most brilliant works” in this repertory.

As for his favorite selection, O’Dette said he has played Vallet’s setting of the Lord’s Prayer “Onse Vader im Hemelryck” — a hymn line with variations over four voices — “my entire career.” Here he is playing a 1984 replica of a 10-course Lute, made in Canada.

A Special Performer Returns Paul O’Dette is one busy and prolific musician

aul O’Dette is recognized worldwide as the foremost and most influential performer today on the lute, the fretted-stringed instrument so popular during the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in Ithaca’s Unitarian Church, he offers a solo concert “The Secret of the Muses” as part of NYS Baroque’s season. The program features works from France, Italy and England inspired by Lord Herbert of Cherbury’s collection. NYS Baroque’s artistic director Deborah Fox gives the preconcert talk at 6:45.

O’Dette’s career and accomplishments are mind-boggling. Apart from concertizing all over the world, he is professor of lute and director of early music programs at Eastman, as well as artistic director of the Boston Early Music Festival, best known for its staging of Baroque operas. He has made over 140 recordings, and, when we spoke last week, he had just returned from Bremen in northern Germany where he conducted the festival’s ensemble in a recording of chamber duets by Agostino Steffani (1654–1728). Steffani’s works were models for the likes of Handel, followed by a concert broadcast all over Europe. The concert was streamed online and so was the awarding of the German equivalent of the Grammy (among five international awards) for group’s recording last year of Steffani’s opera Niobe. O’Dette described the experience as “exciting but stressful.” Oddly enough, Fox, his good friend and colleague, was in Virginia last week playing in another recording project organized by harpsichordist Jory Vinikour (remembered for his brilliant rendition of Bach’s Goldberg variations in 2014) also of Steffani chamber duets. “He’s the hot new composer,” she told me.

Edward Herbert (1583–1648), courtier, historian, amateur musician and brother of metaphysical poet George Herbert, became Lord Herbert of Cherbury in 1629. His Lute Book, a manuscript compiled over his lifetime, contains 242 pieces by leading English, French and Italian composers of the period — showing a variety of musical styles, forms and techniques that were otherwise unknown. After starting the collection in England, his lordship went to Paris as King James I’s ambassador to the court of Louis XIII, where he likely studied with leading French lutenists. When back in England, he continued his work. The manuscript survived an attack on Lord Herbert’s castle by Cromwell’s Parliamentarians and safely resides today in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.

This important source represents “the best, the most varied, the most colorful music of this period,” O’Dette explains,

plus an “incredible variety of styles,” many reflecting the taste of different countries at the time. Generally speaking, the French style was characterized by elegance and delicacy, the Italian by virtuoso passages and dissonances, the English by memorable tunes and proportioned ornamentation. Also this music often demonstrates influences and blending of several different styles.

Prominent on the program are pieces by the influential lutenist Nicolas Vallet.

Lord Herbert could not have known him, as the Frenchman, a Calvinist, had fled to Amsterdam to avoid religious persecution.

His music, which shows not only a blending of French, English and Dutch styles but also instructions for fingering in the new French style, was published in two volumes as Le secret des muses (hence this concert’s title). The program’s first half closes with one of his two big suites. Also representing France are works from Lord Herbert’s collection by two-named Gaultier from a famous family of lutenists. We have also four pieces by Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger,

Ithaca College presents Mozart’s inspirational opera “Le Clemenza di Tito”, a challenging and deft story about Emperor Tito. The opera showcases a generous ruler mixed up in the trials of jealousy and revenge.

In classic Mozart fashion, the opera is both dark and beaming, allowing for introspection and tragedy to develop naturally. Shows run Friday, Feb. 24, Sunday, Feb. 26, Tuesday, Feb. 28, and Wednesday, March 1.

This is a great and rare opportunity to experience two of Asia’s leading artists: Korean Jin Hi Kim, and the Chinese born Min Xiao-Fen. These two titans of classical and contemporary Asian music offer a dazzling and virtuosic showcase of instruments not typically used in Western music. Kim plays the komungo, a six-stringed Korean zither from the 4 th century. Xiao-Fen plays the classic Chinese pipa, expanding the instrument into the realms of jazz, noise, and classical music.

wo radically nutzoid movies tanked at the box office this past weekend. And I thoroughly enjoyed both of them.

Well, maybe “enjoyed” is the wrong word to describe my reaction to Gore Verbinski’s A Cure for Wellness. But it is sadly ironic that the week Fangoria magazine finally went bust that a movie like this should appear. It’s a gothic horror film as new as the 2008 financial crisis and as old as Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It surely would have graced Fango’s cover.

Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) stars as Mr. Lockhart, a sort of modern-day Jonathan Harker, an ambitious and duplicitous all-work-and-no-play young executive. He has been sent to retrieve his company’s CEO, Mr. Pembroke (Harry Groener), from an idyllic but mysterious “wellness center” at a remote location in the Swiss Alps.

Aside from the vaguely malicious nurses, orderlies and a pale young waif named Hannah (Mia Goth – could her name be any more apropos?), all the patients are in their twilight years. Following a nasty car accident, Lockhart finds himself taken prisoner, and he realizes soon enough that something is seriously amiss; the institute’s director, Dr. Volmer (Jason Isaacs) is not to be trusted.

I don’t have the taste for horror that I used to have, but Verbinski has crafted

quite the existential scary tale here, and it boasts some very beautiful and effective cinematography courtesy of the film’s DP, Bojan Bazelli (Deep Cover, The Ring). As Lockhart reluctantly submits to the spa’s signature treatment — the film could also be titled Don’t Drink the Water – Verbinski, working from a story he concocted with scripter Justin Haythe, rolls out a virtual compendium of disturbing, queasy psychic pressure points — and bears down.

The film boasts more creepy catacombs and corridors than you’ll find in all of Roger Corman’s Poe pictures, not to mention the most disturbing and upsetting dental sequence since Marathon Man (heavily influenced by another iconic horror film, A Clockwork Orange). DeHaan may not be particularly likeable, but as his cure leads him deeper and deeper into the mystery of the spa, he is compelling to watch as he tumbles down the rabbit hole.

Like the spa’s recommended therapy, this movie gets under your skin. *** Zhang Yimou’s The Great Wall stars Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal as mercenary warriors who literally stumble across an epic battle against nasty creatures reminiscent of Aliens and Starship Troopers.

If you’re expecting a detailed history of Chinese architecture and culture – my pal Jamie Lewis, working as a teacher in China, deemed it “utter bollocks” in historical terms — think again. But if you’re up for a robust sci-fi war film that moves at a ferocious clip and doesn’t take itself seriously, you’ll have a great time.

Zhang Yimou has been making films going back to 1987, and his filmography spans more realistic Chinese epics like Ju Dou, Shanghai Triad and Raise the Red Lantern, character studies like The Story of Qui Ju, screwball comedies like A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop, and wuxia films like Hero. He’s never made a film like this,
