F

ollowing the establishment of a citizen’s panel to look at the “current structure and operations” of the municipal court system, a report was accepted by the Tompkins County Council of Governments (TCCOG).

The panel’s goal was to find “potential ways and means to sustain and improve the efficiency of operations and quality of justice provided by the town and village courts,” according to information from Resolution 6660.

The citizen’s panel, also known as the Municipal Courts Task Force, has two town justices, a city court judge, the District Attorney, two members of the local defense bar and two town supervisors.

It has been established for a year.

Over the course of the last year there were 25 meetings that included testimony of 33 different individuals, such as the New York State (NYS) Magisrates Association, NYS Public Defenders Association, local magistrates and judges, attorneys, the county Sheriff’s Office, the Nassau County District Court, local school districts and the general public.

The meetings also included gathering view points from constituencies and stakeholders, reviewing correspondence from the public and reviewing reports from previous efforts to help the NYS court system.

After going through the process and analyzing all of the information gathered, the task force came up with 13 recommendations for the municipal court system.

Some of the goals are intended to “reduce justice court caseloads, streamline operations and to establish more uniform approaches to bail for lower level offenses,” according to the resolution. continued on page 4

you can have fresh beer all the time,” Brotman said. “It really makes a big difference, I mean if you go to a bottle shop and you look at dates on the bottle, you might find an IPA from last year that’s not going to taste so good… the aroma is gone, the flavor is gone.”

Brotman and Tielens had been playing with the idea of opening a brewery for some time now, ever since the pair became fast friends while working in different departments at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

ornell’s plans to mitigate its seeping student p o pu l a t i on a nd t h e school’s struggles to house its growing enrollment provided several intriguing revelations about its role in Ithaca’s housing crisis.

The bottom line? The university can and should do more to at least be able to house a larger share of its 14,000 undergraduates.

Though Cornell technically guarantees housing for their first and second year students, at this point they would not actually be able to provide it, said Vice President of Student Life Ryan Lombardi, presenting the school’s Student Housing Master Plan at last week’s Housi ng Su m m it. C or nel l also has stopped guaranteeing transfer students housing due to the general student overflow.

Though no definitive plans have been set in motion, Lombardi showed some preliminary renderings for new housing construction on Cornell’s campus that would potentially alleviate some of the housing crunch the school has seen.

Lombardi referred to the plan as a concept, adding much more work needs to be done

before anything is finalized.

In its current form, at least two new residence halls and a new dining hall would be built on campus. The plan would aim to organize first year students into a certain swath of central campus, while sophomores would mostly reside in

the North Campus town-house area. The goal, Lombardi said, is to maintain a sense of community among younger students that can help them adapt to the university atmosphere.

“They’re trying to get their feet on the ground, they’re trying to get confidence in the classroom and with their peer groups and all these types of elements,” Lomba rd i sa id.

Claiborne, Advocacy Coordinator for Loaves & Fishes of Tompkins County, brought a more humanistic side to the otherwise calculated Tompkins County Housing Summit, introducing four people who told stories of the distress they experienced while desperately searching for housing around Ithaca.

“Now, we all pride ourselves on our diversity, but when you look around you have to ask ‘Where is it?’” Claiborne said.

operative landlords and a lack of protective oversight by local government for their housing woes.

Four people told their stories of attempts to find housing around Tompkins County.

Sheila Ramos, a single mother of two, told the crowd through tears her journey from when she was evicted because she was in the Housing Voucher Choice Program. She was saved from homelessness only by Iacovelli Properties’ willingness to give her housing despite her income. “ This act of communit y humbleness is what we have lost in our city,” Ramos said. “We are shutting out families who

Lombardi said a back log of expensive deferred maintenance on older buildings, capacity growth for current students and f lexibility for future enrollment growth are the main concerns that Cornell has to address before any construction is to take place. He

also stated the school’s desire to cut down the number of “maximized” residence halls, which essentially means redesigning rooms to fit three students instead of two, also often referred to as forced triples.

The plan is still in its infancy, so details on cost had not yet been fully clarified. Lombardi did say that the school would probably not be able to place the burden of the construction directly on students, perhaps need housing due to these negative new ideas about people who are less fortunate. This is going on here now.”

Sharon Payne and Barr y Briggs told similar stories. Payne lamented that her teenage son is forced to grow up in a druginfested apartment building.

Payne said she has a job, but has yet to be able to work her way out of the building yet.

“I’m a working mom, struggling day by day to get by,” Payne said. “I see somebody walk by my apartment and shoot up heroin, I wasn’t raised like that […] Help us get better housing.”

Briggs was in and out of prison several times during his teenage years and young adulthood before being diagnosed with a severe mental illness. He

through a tuition increase, but did not indicate that meant the tax-payers would have to chip in.

“What we know we can’t do is put this all on the backs of our students in terms of shooting our housing rates up through the roofs or anything along those lines,” Lombardi said. “So we really have to be creative in thinking about how we might solve this kind of a growth that we might achieve, through our planning process.”

All agreed that one of the keys to t he i mprov ing t he state of housing in the city was increased on-campus housing from Cornell. Christopher Coes, Vice President at neighborhood consultation f irm Smart Growth America, said the housing status quo of little availability and high prices will only continue to worsen if nothing is done about the lack of on-campus housing options.

“If we don’t build more student housing, they’re going to keep on taking up other housing and those residents won’t have anywhere to live,” Coes said. This is a particular problem as landlords are far more likely to rent to college students, presumably with financially comfortable parents, as opposed to possibly riskier low-income people.

has been homeless since coming to Ithaca in 2015, bouncing from shelters to couches and the like, while going through the process of trying to find a job and applying for housing vouchers.

“It’s not just me fighting Section 8 and other organizations like that, it’s a lot of people in the community,” Briggs said, speaking of the Ultimate ReEntry Opportunity Program that advocated on his behalf.

“If I didn’t have that backup, I wouldn’t be here today.”

Of the three, his story had the happiest ending—Briggs finally did find housing, has enrolled in college courses and recently received a loan to begin a hot-dog cart business.

hroughout the Tompkins County Housing Summit, the overarching theme seemed to point to at least one certainty in a sea of complexity: to solve the problem with housing, developers will inevitably need to build.

The topic of “Not in my Backyard” residents, referred to as NIMBYs, was a common theme throughout the discussion, which refers to people who may support something generally but not if it affects them directly, such as low-income housing in their neighborhoods. General sentiment among the panel

was that the county population needed to be less scared about the process.

n the lobby of Ithaca High School’s Kulp Auditorium on Wed nesday nig ht, a crowd mixed with developers, elected officials and small-time landlords alike sipped coffee and chatted amongst themselves, clutching thin programs with a cover image, calling for “a place for all of us.”

They were there for t he event that has been hyped in meeting halls incessantly over the last several months – the Tompkins County Housing Summit – a forum meant to serve as an open to the discussion on remedying the rising costs of housing in Tompkins County, the lack of availability of that housing and, as a result of all this, a lack of social equity in the community’s fabric. Christopher Coes, an influential urban policy advisor from Washington, D.C., was there to speak on the crisis’ context in the national trend of new urbanization, Commissioner of Planning for Tompkins County Ed Marx to follow up with an update on what the county has done so far to address its housing problem.

“It will be difficult with the town justices in particular, as they are very used to the current way of doing things,” he stated.

“Many of them were very supportive of the task force, but some were not. It talks about a change in the way things are done, including DWI cases leaving town court, but does not ask for a replacement of those courts by a district court, so their jobs will not go away.”

Ups&Downs ▶ Ithaca Underground While the type of music that Ithaca Underground plays host to is diverse, it’s not exactly everybody’s cup of tea.

But at last weekend’s Big Day In, the organization’s annual, year end shindig, we saw a perfect example of an event for all. With all ages shows yearround as well representing dozens of voices that otherwise go unheard, these guys do a great job. ▶ Ithaca College For keeping their finalists for its next president a total secret from everybody until the big reveal. They were originally supposed to meet with everyone but, with some searching for other jobs, the student body and faculty won’t get to meet them.

A Housing Solution?

What did we learn from the housing summit?

n the opening night of the Tompk i ns C ou nt y Housi ng Su m m it , keynote speaker Christopher Coes walked the audience gathered in Ithaca High School’s Kulp Auditorium through the best practices of modern urban planning. “You’re not alone,” he said, as he discussed solutions to various housing crises currently taking place across the country.

“A lot of places are going through changes just like this.”

In a finely-curated slideshow of

facts and figures, Coes walked the audience through some of the solutions that had worked best to combat inequality in other booming small cities: places newly-popular with both the young and old and places where inequality and equitable housing was once a disappearing dream. In those cities, he said, the places that rose above it took action and made real decisions to combat what was happening: revising their zoning codes, incentivizing good development and building for walkability. Conquering NIMBYism was also a solution.

“I’m not just some guy from Washington coming in to tell you what to do,” Coes said in the conclusion of his presentation.

“You’re going to need to make these decisions.”

After two days of discussion, the question we should now be asking ourselves is the type of decision Coes suggested we make. The city has written guidelines for a comprehensive plan penned with the two things most important to us in mind: equit y a nd neighborhood cha racter.

Something’s Fishy

swear I’m not making this up.

A friend of mine, we’ll call him “Jeff”, well, that’s actually his real name, so let’s call him “Rip Van Winkle” instead, was accidentally f lashfrozen in May, 2015 in a freak accident at the Mrs. Paul’s Fish Stick factory in Omaha, Nebraska. You may have read about it on breitbart.com He had gone undercover to discover why fish sticks were being processed at a location literally as far from the sea as it’s possible to get. In any event, he’s been kept suspended in a cryogenic state back here in Ithaca until a medical team was able to devise a safe method of thawing him out, and he regained consciousness at Cayuga Medical Center just this morning. I was at his bedside, and here’s how our conversation went…

The last thing I remember is my sleeve getting caught in a conveyor belt… wait a minute! Ithaca? 2016?

Where am I? What day is it?

VAN WINKLE: Well, duh! No way she would have lost this time.

Why were so many people interested enough in housing to come to an evening meeting and a day-long event? Because housing is a serious concern that affects ALL sectors of our community.

This past summer the summit’s Planning Committee came together with a vision that our county could be “A Place for All of Us,” where young families starting out and retired folks downsizing can all find homes they can afford. Where both the hotel worker and the hotel manager can find safe places to live. Whether you’re a student, a professor, or someone returning home from incarceration, you don’t have to struggle to make a home. We all need safe, stable homes that are affordable at our various income levels.

Today t hat’s not t he rea lit y in Tompkins County. Several individuals who are directly hurt as a result told their stories at the summit. But we’re all connected when it comes to housing; this reality hurts all of us.

today will affect our community for years to come. The question is, will we choose what our future looks like, or will we let it happen to us, by chance?

Will our decisions help us create the kind of community we want, and further our values of equity, sustainability, and quality of life? Or will we become an increasingly wealth-segregated community with limited housing choices? Will we be even more stuck in traffic congestion, because those who earn less must drive further away from work and services, to find a home they can afford? The choice is ours. And the decisions are before us right now.

How much housing do we need?

County Planning Commissioner Ed Marx presented preliminary projections of annual needs over the next ten years, based on t he recent lycompleted Needs Assessment. The County is developing a new Housing Strateg y, and more conversations about specific housing targets will be part of drafting that strategy. Here’s a preliminary projection of ANNUAL need over the next ten years: • Non-student rental housing – up to 200 units • Ownership housing – 300 single family homes plus 80 condominiums, most at a cost of $200,000 or less • Senior population – 50-100 mar-

ket rate independent, assisted living, memor y care and skilled nursing beds • Student housing – 150 to 330 beds (a mix of on-campus and offcampus) In addition, we need supportive or specialized housing, such as units for youth, people with disabilities, Medicaid-eligible seniors, citizens in recovery and re-entering from incarceration, and victims of domestic violence.

What can we do about these gaps?

The Housing Strategy will help us identif y actions we can take, and we’ll need community input to guide our efforts. Preliminary work indicates we could meet the demand with existing infrastructure, in line with local comprehensive plans. Many ideas were offered during the summit, including: •Building infill housing, accessory units, and employer-assisted housing •Encouraging public support for housing projects now under consideration •Focusing on ta rgeted ma rket opportunities: ◦Purpose-built student housing ◦Market rate senior/downsizing options •Continuing to focus on low/moderate and middle income housing

•Lowering the cost of housing by supporting energy efficiency retrofits •Monitoring rents and vacancy rates annually •Encouraging new ways to raise capital for housing development W hy does housing matter so much?

Whether it was across the country or across the street, do you remember the feeling of dislocation until you got settled in your new place? Or your trepidation when your kids had to change schools? Do you remember how hard it was to focus on anything else?

This summit was just the start of our local housing conversation. We are a diverse community with many points of view. We have much to learn from each other and from other places facing similar challenges.

backyards the city, as we’ve seen with projects at Stone Quarry and 210 Hancock, have gone through with what it thought was best, no matter how much kicking and screaming there was from the public.

The city has made an effort. Now we must look at who hasn’t.

In a presentation, representatives from Cornell revealed it does not even have the capacity to house all of its freshman and sophomore class. Despite increasing enrollment almost annually, it has seemed to pay little attention to its housing stock. Beyond a planned expansion for Maplewood, the university has left housing its students mostly up to local developers, who have to shoulder most of the battles in city hall in their efforts to house the vast majority of the student body Cornell leaves to fend for itself.

There are solutions to this. We could wait and see how playing hardball–like what the Town of Ithaca is doing to Ithaca College in threatening to pull fire coverage unless payment is given–could pay off in forcing change. Or we could look toward a businessman’s proposition, finding a way to strike a deal that makes housing more of its students beneficial and profitable to Cornell.

Proposals like the Johnson School–where Cornell is leasing its facility from a private developer–show this can be done if the city is willing to work with a third party.

Instead of rehashing what we already know, maybe it’s time to look at what we’ve already done and try what we haven’t.

This article is nice, but did you all notice that home health aides, and Certified Nurses Aides, do not even make LIVING WAGE? Both Tompkins County and the City of Ithaca are Living Wage employers. They both encourage businesses to pay their employees a living wage, but this industry doesn’t even come close. Home Health Aides do not receive health care benefits either. With Obamacare’s requirement that every person have insurance, a large chunk of an aide’s income, which is about $30,000 less than the median income in Tompkins County, has to go to buying insurance. How is this fair? How can a parent do this work and be able to provide for their children? Maybe the discussion should be more about raising the salaries for this type of work, because we know the agencies charge twice as much (or more) an hour than what an aide makes.

A s the new year approaches, local organizations such as Ithaca Welcomes Refugees and Catholic Charities of Ithaca are preparing for the arrival of 52 refugees from embattled countries around the world to Tompkins County. Over 100 people gathered in a room at the First Unitarian Society of Ithaca on Sunday at an interest meeting for potential IWR volunteers.

Sue Chaffee, who is leading the refugee resettlement program’s efforts for Catholic Charities, said the majority of the refugees are expected to come from Syria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, along with Iraq, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Ukraine and

new lives can begin or, at the very least, present day life can be made a little bit easier, working to advocate for and assist people who are or have been incarcerated in the Tompkins County Jail and get them back on their feet, whether through programming or its resources.

Over the past decade, as housing has become more and more of a pressing issue in the City of Ithaca, so too has the strain on affordable housing for those most in need of stability following a period of in-

carceration or addiction.

Over the past decade, there’s been great progress for this type of housing where it didn’t exist before: There’s been Magnolia House (completed in 2010), Chartwell House (renovated in the early 2000s) and coming soon, if approvals come through, Amici House, catering mostly toward women and children. But OAR wants to house more. Presently, OAR is in negotiations to purchase a somewhat out of shape house downtown zoned for use as

Cuba. While Catholic Charities requested permission for 50 refugees, it appears the final number will be 52 for 2017.

Chaffee said the main purpose of the program is not just to house the refugees, but to help them assimilate and build a future within American society.

“Our goal is to get them employed, hopefully within six months, so we have a wage-earner in the family,” she said. “And then move them off of public assistance towards self-sufficiency.”

Starting in January, Catholic Charities will start to receive refugee cases, which they can either accept or deny after vetting, Chaffee said. Once permanent housing is found, the refugees are connected with Social Services, children are integrated into

schools, and evaluating any other specific needs, such as English classes.

“It’s kind of meeting them where they are,” she said. “We are assessing what their needs are and helping them get their lives reestablished here.”

President Barack Obama has already set the number of allowed refugees for 2017, so Chaffee said the new presidential administration’s refugee policy will most likely not impact the expected number of 52. Obama announced in September that the US would be accepting 110,000 refugees in the fiscal year starting October 1, a significant number of which would be from war-torn Syria.

a rooming house, to allow service-supported housing in a convenient downtown location. Called Endeavor House, the group is currently working to raise close to $200,000 in funds ($110,000 to purchase the house, $75,000 for basic electrical and plumbing) to purchase the building, which will house between three and seven people.

“People can’t make long term changes in their lives without a roof over their head,” said OAR director Deb Dietrich.

“We’ll be linking our clients in Endeavor House to higher education to vocational training… we’ll be doing a lot of linkages and providing someone a decent room.”

This house will be for men and will work as part of a “housing first” model, the idea where people cannot be able to get their lives together unless they have stable circumstances to come home to.

While OAR used to operate a similar home outside of town in the more rural reaches of Tompkins County, this house will differ by combining a stable home life with the convenient access to programming that is available only by living within the city itself.

“Rather than being out in Groton or Enfield,” Dietrich said, “you could be here near the center of things.”

Because the house cannot be purchased through a mortgage, OAR has been seeking a loan to purchase the house but, of course, they need capital funding and, once they purchase it, extensive work to make the house habitable. A lot of the time, getting out of prison is nothing like it is in the movies.

There’s no walk from the gate to a waiting car sometimes; no immediate plans, no destinations. A lot of the time, coming back into the world as a returning citizen is anything but simple, a time full of uncertainty but few answers.

In the organization Ultimate Re-entry Opportunity, an offshoot of Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Multicultural Resource Center, the goal is to reduce those uncertain walks back into the world.

“We try to get them before they come out,” says Edwin Santiago, a mentor with the program. “We write to them in prison to build a relationship early on so when they come out, their return to life is smooth, so we can work on getting them jobs and housing.”

Through URO, Santiago–backed by the MRC’s director, Fabina Colon–work to provide a pillar for returning citizens to lean on once they leave prison to offset the impacts of a society that would otherwise reject them or create barriers in allowing them to reintegrate successfully into society. Described as a “$500,000 initiative with a $70,000 budget,” Colon said the program needs a lot of help in succeeding in its mission to fill the gaps in the county’s various services creating barriers to successful re-entry.

URO has a fair amount of resources already. Through funding from the Park Foundation, the group has filled about half of its need for 10 mentees to talk to people in the prison system, but still needs five more knowledgeable of the resources in the community and who have been in prison and out for at least three years.

For those in the community who don’t fit those qualifications, URO is still hurting for plenty: they need funding for care packages to provide the families of the formerly incarcerated and those returning to the world. They need people to offer rides back from prison, the closest of which is in Elmira, where a bus ticket may be unattainable for some. Most of all, Colon said, they need marketing: as a small organization, to get in touch with people who need their services most, MRC and URO need help to not just publicize their programming to the public, but those with a pressing need for the services they offer.

A Longer South Hill Rec Way?

f all goes according to plan, there will soon be a convenient means for pedestrians and cyclists alike to easily travel from downtown Ithaca all the way to the fringes of Caroline and Danby without use of a roadway.

Last week, the Tompkins County Planning Department held a town-hall style informational meeting on its plans to expand the South Hill Recreation Way by several miles, one of five trails to be built or expanded as part of a Tompkins County Priority Trails Strategy approved by the legislature in 2014. The approximately three mile trail currently follows old Susquehanna rail beds along Six Mile Creek, ending near Burns Road and Ithaca’s reservoir. The current proposal aims to extend the South Hill Recreation Way three miles further down the old railbed, headed southeast from the eastern terminus at Burns Road and extending all the way to the intersection of Middaugh Road in the Town of Caroline.

If developed, Principal Planner with the County Tom Knipe wrote in an email, the surface would most likely be stone dust, similar to the surface on the existing South Hill Recreation Way. Construction will take place over a three-phase process, the first two of which Contin u ed on page 12

“Tompkins county is changing,” County legislator Martha Robertson (D–Dryden) said, to begin the evening. “It’s different than it was ten years ago and it will be different ten years from now.”

As a prelude to a community conversation discussing the issues facing Ithaca’s housing market, no better discussion could have set the stage better than an outline of the problems themselves as well as some recommendations on potential remedies that raised even further questions for how Tompkins County should move forward in addressing its housing crises.

Nationwide, Coes said in his keynote address, the people most influential on this new trend of urbanization–millenials and baby boomers or as he called them, those in “adulthood, phase two”–were changing the equation of housing primarily through their shared desires: for walkable development convenient to their needs and for vibrancy in their community, opting for lifestyle over utility. He said in cities, the main driver of development was transportation, that the type of development that pops up around transportation infrastructure often reflects the nature of the size of the road, i.e. large highways equate to greater sprawl.

The trend for a long while, Coes said, has been opting for the “drivable suburban” models of development have been the dream for the past 60 years. As such, it was an effective affordable housing option

because then, everything was cheap, from gas to infrastructure. However, demographic and economic fundamentals have shifted, Coes said, from a manufacturing economy to a knowledge economy, “chasing talent,” rather than chasing smokestacks. Headquarters are moving from industrial parks to urban centers, Coes said, primarily to attract talent to match the desires of millenials who are no longer asking for the dreams of the past sixty years.

What this has led to is a change in what type of housing is lucrative, leading to premiums on urban land that used to be affordable and, even with high rents, the transportation costs for a suburbanite to get to their jobs which have now relocated to the cities can often surpass the total cost of living in a downtown walkable community. This is a problem, Coes said, that can be solved with optimized transportation networks, more construction or changes in policy but, he added, those seemingly common sense decisions are rarely so simple to make.

In Ithaca, several of the policies Coes suggested for absolving the housing crisis– Land trusts, employer-based housing and various transit options–are already a common part of the city’s lifeblood. But what the city also grapples with are what Coes named as impediments for smart growth: Federal financing guidelines, parking requirements, approval processes and a general sense of NIMBYism that pervade into the areas where the most important development needs to take place: a “miss-

ing middle” in the market, increasing density between the disappearing (and increasingly more expensive) single family home and the high rise.

This is important to note, especially in the context of development in Tompkins County: Most of the unmet demand in the housing market– approximately 92 percent–are for units under $800 per month, according to a housing needs assessment done earlier this year. And this will continue to be important, said Marx: in a student-driven housing market with a university still considering how best to house its student population, the biggest market drivers over the next decade will be anticipated growth in employment and student enrollment (1 percent growth each, annually) a massive growth in the senior population (44%) and overall, the overwhelming preference for walkable communities.

This inevitably means more building and more development, something that often sees pushback from the community.

But through zoning reform, Coes suggested, municipalities and their residents could strike some sort of compromise in smart development, attracting the right people for projects that work to accomplish a city’s goals.

“Make the things you want easy to build,” Coes said.

could feasibly be completed by the end of 2017, planning staff said. Phase 3, they expect, will take longer to rebuild washedout culverts and to meet with landowners adjacent to the NYSEG-owned land, which will license the land to the county for a 25 year period.

No specific cost or allocations have been named for the cost of the trail but, assumed to cost in the “tens of thousands of dollars,” plans suggest the project could easily be funded by the four communities expected to sign on to maintain the trail once completed: the Town of Ithaca, Dryden, Danby and Caroline.

While each municipality would maintain the segment that falls within their borders, the Town of Ithaca would take the lead on maintaining the trail.

Completion of the South Hill Recreation Way would add to the growing Tompkins County Trail network envisioned two years ago: the Waterfront trail now finished and the long-anticipated Black Diamond Trail all but wrapped up, just the South Hill Recreation Way and the proposed extension of the Dryden/Varna Trail coming off the East Hill Recreation way stand to be completed.

Plans to complete the similar rail-trail project, the Gateway Trail, are still in progress.

Plans for that project call for an extension of the Black Diamond Trail to pass through Ithaca’s Southwest by Buttermilk Falls over the city’s infamous “bridge to nowhere,” an unused pedestrian bridge spanning Route 13 built with “use it or lose it” federal funding. County Planner Michael Smith told the Ithaca Journal last May the only thing restricting the project is the length of the permitting process and that it was “a guess” as to what time construction would begin, possibly stretching into next year.

ogist, had both spent serious time in the burgeoning craft brew scene of the late-90s Pacific Northwest and, in their experience, had developed a taste for the craft with its own unique spin. Both scientists, it was the physical process of beer making that attracted them to the art (beyond their personal enjoyment) and, inevitably, kept them brewing.

“What I love about beer is the science behind it, the creativity involved, and I also really like the engineering part of it: putting all this together to get it to work, dealing with steam and shiny stainless steel equipment,” said Brotman, who’s been part of several brewery expansions at the various stops on his journey. “That’s one thing I love about it.”

Meeting the pair, it seems almost inevitable the two would become friends and later, partners. Both speak with an enthusiasm for the craft of brewing that is tinged with excitement for both the scientific exactness of the art as well as the experimental angles that come with trial and error. The two first began working together when they and their families came together for an annual tradition of making wine around the holidays: last year, their batch resulted from the crushing and fermentation of close to 1,100 lbs. of grapes from Cornell’s orchards.

“We realized we had similar interests and our families –we both have kids – so we were in a position to do a lot of hanging out, socializing and having fun,” Tielens said.

“We first realized we liked working with each other was when we were making wine, actually. We’re beer makers, but that was the catalyst and every year since 2010, we’ve made this big batch of red wine usually made with grapes from Cornell Orchards where we go through the whole process.”

A broker in Seattle was consulted and in came the second-hand equipment; a fermenter from South Korea, various pieces from the Czech Republic… a large part of their tank operation, from an old sake company, is still covered in Japanese lettering, down to the control panel.

“If we could get someone to translate this for us, that would be great,” Brotman joked.

Now, for the third or fourth time in his life, Brotman just has to fit the pieces together.

It was noted that though the federal government and the state of New York do not have this type of legislation, many localities across the state do, so it would not be an unprecedented step. Developers noted that even renovating older homes for mixed income housing, instead of constructing entirely new housing, can be cost prohibitive. The complicated availability of subsidies can also hamstring efforts to construct low- or mixed-income housing, making the projects economically infeasible.

“Lowering rent and splitting houses is not going to solve the problem,” Weinstein said. “We need more incentives.”

During his final remarks, Christopher Coes, Vice President at neighborhood consultation firm Smart Growth America pushed the idea of the community considering Fundrise, a company that allows groups of people to crowd-fund investments in real estate, to give community members a further stake in the future of their neighborhoods and provide further innate incentivization for landlords and tenants alike to work towards safe, affordable housing.

To close, however, he simply encouraged attendees to remain dedicated and involved. Otherwise, the effort will stagnate like it had so many other times, he said.

“Don’t let this summit end today,” Coes said. “If you let it end, you send a signal not only to the market, but also to the political class that is watching you, that this is not a really big issue.”

“People may feel compelled to eat,” Wansink said. “But honestly, your Aunt Grace isn’t going to care how much stuffing you eat. But what she would like is if you asked for more, even if it’s just a little teaspoon of it. That’s all she’ll remember the next day, not how much you ate but that you ate it. You can get by eating a lot less than you think at these holiday meals.”

The best way to stay trim after the holidays is obvious, Wansink says: don’t gain the weight in the first place. But a good reason as to why we ga i n t hat weight comes not just from a lack of personal accountability, but also in our misperceptions of what the holidays Brian Wansink (BrianWansink.com) are all about: while some sort of portions.

A New Familiar Face for IHS Ithaca Girls Basketball Promotes From Within

I

was sitting in Wegmans the other day, drinking my coffee and a reader approached me and said, “I heard the Ithaca High girls’ basketball team has a new coach. Is that true?” Any sage will frame his (or her) answers in a way that make the seeker reach a little deeper, so I replied, “Well… sort of.”

Then, I explained it to them.

While Jeff Gorsky has indeed taken the reins of the Little Red girls’ hoops team, this is not your typical “Let’s all get to know one another” scenario. Jeff has been “on the scene,” so to speak, for a long time, and hiring him to succeed Stephanie Valetta was a logical and wise move.

Gorsky was a two-sport athlete at Ithaca High, graduating in 1987 and lettering in tennis and basketball. He got a degree in accounting, came home and took a job with Sciarabba & Walker here in Ithaca, and set about the business of being a husband and a dad.

“As you know, back when I was growing up we had designated seasons,” he recalled, thinking back to his days as an athlete. “You finished one season and started another. Now with AAU and travel teams, they all blend together. The

kids have lots of opportunities.”

Gorsky coached the junior varsity for a few seasons, and he told me he really enjoyed working with Stephanie (his predecessor) and that going into the job, he has a lot of respect for her and the job she did. He explained that a family relocation (though she still works in the school district) made it necessary for her to step aside, adding, “She helped me a lot with the jayvee program, and I was very fortunate to get the varsity job.”

As Valetta moves on, Gorsky inherits a team hardly made up of strangers. He has been an AAU coach for many years, and has been coaching senior captains Sydney Trumbull and Taylor Day for several years in AAU ball. Gorsky currently has six 9th graders on the varsity (including his daughter, Graceann), who he’s coached since they were all in 5th grade.

“In fact, the freshmen were with me on the jayvee for the last two years,” he pointed out.

To me, this sounds like the makings of a very cohesive and potentially successful team for the “long run.” Jeff says it is coming together well.

“We have had 4 weeks of really good

Co-owner Cyndi Slothower finds gift suggestions wherever she turns, from holiday-themed stitchery kits on bamboo, to later hang on a tree or wear, to “needle nannies” (decorative magnetic needle holders shaped like owls or trees or stars) and extension magnets for picking up dropped pins and other metal objects without leaving one’s chair and stepping on them -think stocking-stuffers. Senior sales associate Whitney Barnett said her best guess is that it hails from the 1970s or early 60s. The design is universal, she said, making it an appealing gift. “If you didn’t know much about vintage items you might think it was from the 2000s,” she said. A Gunpoet Speaks

Musician talks about his new book and his band

A

while back I sat down with the musician and writer Daniel Lisbe, the founder of the Ithaca-based hip hop and funk band Gunpoets. Lisbe talked about his new poetry book Life in Boxes, something he’s creating for children. The book, he says, has a deep connection to his music, and “is designed to wake up the creative spirit in young people, and remind them that their imaginations are powerful things.” Gunpoets play The Dock with the Sim Redmond Band and rapper Eyukaliptus Friday, December 23.

Lisbe talked more about the book, the band’s history, and lots of other great stuff at length. He’s a passionate artist and believes in the future. Here’s what he had to say:

is one that will resonate with everyone, regardless of age or background. It’s the same message that makes Gunpoets so successful, we’re just using a different platform.

In either case, I’ve learned that words are very powerful, and they can impact people in profound ways. They say the pen is mightier than the sword, and I believe them. So whether I’m making music with the band or writing books on my own, I approach my writing as if my voice and words are weapons. That’s where the name Gunpoets comes from.

My friend J-san came up with that name in 2008, just before I started the band. He was producing a solo project that I was working on when he thought of it.

“Life in Boxes is really interactive. It’s fun. Parents and teachers will love it, too.

Possibly more than kids. Children are so impressionable. They believe what they’re told, for better or worse. From where I’m standing, it’s obvious that we owe them more than we’re giving them. They deserve to be inspired, lifted up, and taught that they can do incredible things. Every day, this should be explained and taught to them.

We are extraordinary beings, and our potential often goes unrealized. All too often, instead of our creativity being encouraged and cultivated, it is stifled and stepped on, squished flat by the time we learn how to talk. It’s hard to recover from that. What we learn about the world and ourselves during that pivotal period of development during our childhood shapes our worldview and thought habits for the rest of our lives.

I think the message behind the book

One night I walked into to his studio for a session and the first thing he said to me was, “Yo, D! What do you think about making a song called Gunpoet? One word. Gun and Poet mashed together.” It took me less than one second to know he had hit the nail on the head. I named the song Gunpoet. I named the album Gunpoet. I named my would be band Gunpoets. Our words and music would be our weapons, and we would fight for peace and love.

My plan was to use the album – produced with all live instrumentation – as a steppingstone for the band. With the album as our diving board, we’d be able to dive right in and do shows right away. The first people I recruited were some of my closest friends. Apia Awa on turntables. He goes

by DJ Double A. Eliot Rich on guitar. Colin Smith on keyboard. He also sings. Josh Higgins, also known as Jayhigh, a good friend and fellow poet, joined us a year or so into our run. That core is still intact.

We’ve been through a couple drummers and bass players. Today we’re lucky to have

Michael Wu on bass, and Joel Blizzard on drums.

When we started the band, most of us had already been making music together for years. And we were good friends before that. A lot of us grew up together, so we’re more like family at this point. It’s that bond that serves as the band’s foundation.

This summer we released our third studio album. It’s called Bombs Away! and it’s our best work to date. We’re eight years into this thing and in many ways we’re just now hitting our stride.

Music aside, we all lead very busy lives. We’re teachers, carpenters, restaurant managers, servers. Most of us are married with kids. It limits us a bit when it comes to how often we can play and how far we can travel. Mostly we play shows within an hour or two of home. It’s perfect for us. We love where we are. What we have here in Ithaca is so incredibly special. The way the community supports and embraces us is more than any artist or musician could ask for. This band means the world to all of us.

I recently went through a dark period in my life. It lasted a couple years and the band kept me afloat during some really hard times. My whole system crashed.

My mind, my body, my spirit, everything felt deflated and broken. So I ducked out of the spotlight as much as I could and buried myself in music and writing. I slowed my pace. I changed my diet. I began meditating every day. I read constantly. I dove inward and stayed there for quite a while. Slowly but surely, my healing took place from the inside out. It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. I had to climb out of a very deep, dark hole. I did. And I grew as a person and learned a lot about myself in the process. I’m stronger because of it. My message is clearer for it. It was a rite of passage, so to speak.

I know what I went through isn’t all that different from what so many other people experience on a daily basis. This world can be a hard place to find peace. We’re surrounded by war and violence. Most of us are overworked and still broke. We’re stressed. We’re tired. We’re depressed. I know what it looks and feels like from up close. The darkness is real. But I’m standing here in the light, so I know this is real, too. I had to dig around for a while, but I found it. It was right here inside me the whole time. And I want to help other people find it. It’s inside each of us, we just have to know where to look.

I think our best chance of turning the world around exists in our children. They’ll be running the world before we know it, so it’s up to us to raise them in a way that will empower them to do it responsibly, and with great care. That’s why I’m pouring myself into the creation of Life in Boxes.

When One Voice Sings

Thumbprint dazzles at the Hangar Theatre

A

t its best, opera offers those moments when all the arts combine to express something ineffable. And when historically based material is infused with aesthetic richness to both reflect and advance social change, the experience is rare indeed.

In three performances last weekend, Opera Ithaca presented Thumbprint, a collaboration of librettist Susan Yankowitz and composer Kamala Sankaram (who also played the lead in the New York premiere nearly three years ago). The piece indicates Opera Ithaca’s intent to annually feature work created by women. (The Met, the program notes, is only this year staging its first opera by a woman since 1903).

Ithaca’s is the second production of this new work; Los Angeles Opera includes it in next year’s season.

This chamber opera is based on the life of Mukhtar Mai, the first Pakistani woman to speak out and bring the men who gang-raped her to justice. The actual events, beginning in 2002, resemble a

story straight out of classical opera — with themes of the rich and powerful (here, the Mastoi tribe) abusing the poor and landless (Gujar peasants), of men taking ownership of women’s bodies and lives; of heroic resistance in the face of entrenched values, laws, and customs.

But Thumbprint, with its contemporary South Asian setting and authentic storyline, presents something quite new — including an exquisite musical score blending eastern and western rhythms and instrumentation. The Hangar Theatre provided an ideal venue for the unfolding narrative, its intimate space permitting a close viewing of the performers’ sensitive acting, a luxury for most operagoers.

Staged with expressive movement by director Susannah Berryman and choreographer Mary Corsaro, three women and four men enact the tale (all but two assuming multiple roles). The series of scenes, with straightforward economy, establishes the simplicity of rural domesticity and the society’s unequal gender and class structures.

When Mukhtar’s 12-year-old brother, Shakur, fails to arrive home after swimming one hot afternoon, his family soon learns he’s been imprisoned by the authoritarian Mastoi. Their claim that he assaulted one of their women is false (though unmentioned here, their demands were to cover their having sodomized the boy). Tradition requires that a woman beg forgiveness for dishonoring men, and so Mukhtar, knowing her brother’s innocence, bravely volunteers to apologize to his captors and win his release.

Instead, she is repeatedly raped by four Mastoi tribesmen and humiliated before the villagers; her father, at gunpoint, is unable to protect her. Shamed and spoiled, she withdraws at home, deciding to take her own life by swallowing acid, as tradition expects. But her mother fiercely reaffirms her worth–“Mukhtar means strength and respect”­–and gradually, with her family’s support, Mukhtar comes to realize that the sin is not hers but her violators’.

Each stage of the story is sculpted with clarity and feeling, the deliberate pace allowing emotions to be absorbed and understood, both onstage and in the audience. And the splendid music — six instrumentalists led by Richard Montgomery — functions as a character itself.

Staccato piano notes, an ominous bass, the sweetness of a violin, the urgent pulse of tabla, and ritual clapping all help shape action and mood, from desperation to bittersweet victory.

Smitha Johnson’s Mukhtar is slender and lovely, modest and beautifully voiced, gradually increasing in force as her character grows more confident — a nuanced, inspiring performance. Yamuna Meleth as her sister Annu, who realizes that familial disgrace means she’ll never marry, is a stunning soprano. Evangelia Kingsley as their compassionate mother is particularly arresting in the scene in which she rouses her daughter to live. Later, in turn, the activist Mukhtar will literally sing her collapsing mother and sister upright into a stance of assurance.

enhance the production, like having either women or male elders standing above the action, providing choral accompaniment or counterpoint. And in the murky red light of the rape scene, with the action both literal and stylized, another woman substitutes for Mukhtar, who stands apart, suggesting the sense of disembodiment that comes with rape.

Christian Henry is an aptly frightened Shakur, and the leading men, with rich, dominant voices, are powerful presences.

John-Andre Fernandez is fearsome as the arrogant, tradition-blind Faiz; Jake Stamatis is cockily threatening as Abdul — both men disturbing throughout but especially in the mocking laughter song. Suchan Kim is Mukhtar’s sympathetic father, heartbreakingly so in the trial scene. All their voices and performances are uniquely compelling, from darkness to tenderness.

With her family and local imam behind her, Mukhtar reports the crime and eventually the men are tried and sentenced. (The real-life outcome, still ongoing, is more complex.) With her money for damages, Mukhtar creates the village’s first school for girls, so that they will come to know the wider world and no longer have to sign, as she did, with their thumbprint.

The oppressed know that “truth dies in the mouth of power” — but through Mukhtar’s courage (the mystery of it sought by the international journalists who swarm her), they learn that “when one voice sings, a thousand hear the song.” • Thumbprint, composed by Kamala Sankaram and libretto by Susan Yankowitz.

The Spirit of Punk to Come Providence band merges passion and form

oming at you in quick pummeling sheets of political, bilingual, and social rage, Providence punk rockers Downtown Boys make the most out of every little energetic molecule of the their righteous totality. Part Caribbean wildness, NYC hardcore, and Fugazi-by-way of Minutemen ideology, the band expels a punishing serving of progressive thinking, dangling their inner sprit in wild and compelling shows, social demonstrations, and forward-thinking organization. The band has appeared on Democracy Now!, launched an online magazine, and has inspired and amazed a whole generation.

Their 2015 debut full-length Full Communism is a behemoth of bold vision and punk angst, thrashing and moving.

Guitarist and singer Joey La Neve DeFrancesco met lead singer Victoria Ruiz while they both worked at a hotel in downtown Providence. The union has proved remarkable. I caught up with the two artists as they prepare for a four-day mini-December tour, stopping by The Haunt this Friday.

These guys rip, so don’t even think about missing out.

Ithaca Times: The past few weeks have been unbelievably difficult and incredibly disappointing ones for many of us — is there a silver lining to this recent election, do you guys feel more energized than ever, and have you written any new songs in this strange span of time?

Joey La Neve DeFrancesco: I don’t think there is any silver lining — this is a bad election and it means we have to take a million steps backward that we’re going to have to re-walk. Perhaps this needed to happen to get the Left to understand it more resolutely needs to reject Neoliberalism in order to gain power. I think there were other ways for us to push for that to happen — like Black Lives Matter has created one of the most powerful protest movements in our country’s recent history, and they were, and are, winning victories in a lot of places. Many commentators are saying this “needed” to happen to bring about something positive, but I don’t believe that.

It’s bad, and we’re going to need to get a lot better organized to fight off the Right’s attacks and take more power.

IT: Is hope false?

DeFrancesco: Our music is all about hope, so no. A lack of hope doesn’t typically look like anger; it looks like nihilism, depression, and so on. We’re angry and push hard because we believe there can be a better world.

IT: Were there any particular things going on in Providence that inspired you

guys to start the band?

DeFrancesco: The same things happening in every city in terms of structural oppression. Victoria and I met while working at a hotel where they treated us like s*** and we were organizing to form a union and better the working conditions there — so that specific fight had some influence

from a photographer who’s been at Standing Rock for the past few months.

IT: The song “Monstro” feels particularly urgent. Do you think religion and certain aspects of western philosophy can be partly blamed for the separation of self and being, and is there a story behind the song: is it personal and universal?

Victoria Ruiz: It’s so crazy, because the lyrics for that song were written over two years ago now. But, yes, the song is very urgent. Racism and capitalism coproducing over and over, and then producing so many real systems of oppression, definitely separate self and being. The song is both personal and universal. It’s about how there are systems of oppression that try and use our identities to define themselves instead of realizing that their identity is like this monster that was born for inequality to

over our early music.

IT: What can a live musical performance achieve, and when you guys perform, is there an ideology that’s behind the force, or a more of a communal angle?

DeFrancesco: If I have to focus it down, I’d say it can do at least three things: It can build community, spread information, and challenge people. It builds community by breaking down individualistic barriers and bringing people together. It can spread information by doing literally that — getting ideas and facts out there and how to use them. And it can challenge people by just taking up space, saying things that make some members of the audience uncomfortable. These are all worthy goals.

IT: Can you talk about Spark magazine, and what kind of resources, ideas, and goals are behind it?

DeFrancesco: Spark Mag can be found at thesparkmag.com, and it’s a site specifically made to highlight radical and underrepresented artists, and to discuss politics in culture. We’ve been working with Demand Progress — a national grassroots advocacy organization — to put it together. We put up features, premieres, interviews, and all the types of articles on a typical music website, but with the focus I just explained. IT: You guys released Full Communism in 2015. What was the process like writing and recording the album, and any plans for a new record on the horizon?

Ruiz: The songs were written over the course of a few years and they all were very much about personal and political experiences. We recorded in Chicago with Greg Norman at Electrical Audio Studios. We put it out with Don Giovanni and Girlie Action did the PR for it. It was a great process. We are working on writing the last few songs to complete our next full length.

Hopefully, we will have something within the next year.

IT: You’re heading out on tour and can only bring five cassette tapes with you (no mixtapes), what are you bringing and why?

Ruiz: Bruce Springsteen: Born in the USA, because it’s speaking to the past, the present, and the future; Nina Simone: Anthology Part 2, because it is so, so relevant; Kendrick Lamar: Section.80, because it gives inspiration for what we say between songs; At The Drive In: Relationship Of Command, because it’s album of experience and has an incredible recording sound; and any album by The Coneheads, because Mary our bassist is always talking about how good they are! •

wanted to get one Christmas column in before the end of 2016 but didn’t want to rehash the classics, all the usual suspects that play for on cable channels for 24 hours straight. We all love The Charlie Brown Christmas and all those stop-motion Rankin-Bass TV specials, but I wanted to dig a little deeper for some goodies I’ve never written about.

I don’t know how I missed Jon Favreau’s Elf (2003) when it first came out, but when I finally saw it a year later, the one physical comedy gag the film relies on had me rewinding the DVD and rewatching a dozen times. On his IFC show Dinner For Five, Favreau talked about how in preparation for Elf, he and his crew studied one-joke movies that transcend, like Tootsie and Groundhog Day, and so the movie, which stars Will Farrell in one of his best early roles as Buddy, relies on Farrell as an oversized elf searching for his human father (James Caan) in New York City.

Up until this year’s remake of The Jungle Book, Favreau has opted for practical effects over digital, and so Elf was designed to look like one of those vintage TV specials, replete with great stop-motion (especially on display through an animated snowman voiced by Leon Redbone) and some really fine forced perspective work surely influenced by the LOTR trilogy, which was just wrapping up that year.

If Farrell weren’t so genuine and sweet in the title role, Elf wouldn’t have staying power. But he’s not the only draw. Caan is fantastic counter-casting, and you’ll also see Zooey Deschanel (pre-New Girl), Faizon Love, Mary Steenburgen, Ed Asner, the eternally droll Bob Newhart as Buddy’s adoptive elf papa and Favreau in a very funny cameo as a doctor. I wouldn’t have thought that this would be the guy to bring Iron Man to life, but Elf, it seems, was just the beginning.

The great thing about our favorite TV series is that most of them did memorable holiday episodes, and Dan Harmon’s Community is no exception. For a comedy series that did the best genre parody of the last 20 years, Community produced at least two great Xmas installments. You can’t go wrong with season 2’s “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas”, a stop-motion tour de force in which the study group takes a dark “Wonka-style” tour through the holiday fantasies of Abed (Danny Pudi), the group’s pop culture savant.

Then there’s season 3’s “Regional Holiday Music”, a brilliant parody of Glee and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Taran Killam, a former SNL cast member, guest stars as Greendale’s creepy-cheery glee club leader, who manages to musically “infect” the gang to get them to stand in for glee

club regionals. Pudi and Donald Glover do a great holiday wrap, Alison Brie does a great sexy-stupid number, and Gillian Jacobs steals the show as tone-deaf Britta, free styling dressed as a dopey Christmas tree.

Inspired by Seth Rogen’s animated travesty Sausage Party, I checked out Rogen’s holiday comedy from last year. The Night Before stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a guy whose parents are killed at the holi-

days, and Rogen and Anthony Mackie costar as his friends who vow to spend every Christmas together as a makeshift family.

The film takes place over the course of one drug-fueled and debauched Christmas Eve, as the guys search for The Nutcracker Ball, the ultimate holiday bash. There’s a pretty smart and surprising celebrity cameo that I will not spoil, and a seriously goofy turn from Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire) as an enigmatic drug dealer with the soul of one of Dickens’ Christmas spirits. It may not merit perennial status, but throw it in after the kids have gone to bed – it’s good for some laughs. •

The Real Deal

eing a serious painter in the cultural orbit of Ithaca is quite the mixed blessing. On one hand, there’s a strong gallery culture as well as an aspiring public that thirsts for the handmade and the uniquely expressive. On the other, our painters lack for a broader audience both discerning and unsentimental. How to stand out when the mere idea of artistic accomplishment captivates so many?

A similar, if slighter problem confronts anyone who wants to bring recognition to such artists. Not to rain hyperbole but, more modestly, to point people’s eyes in the direction of something genuinely distinc-

long-standing working relationship with local artists.

One does wish for a larger selection of pieces by Adams, who rarely exhibits around town. (She was part of a well chosen but indifferently arranged four-person show last year at the Trumansburg Conservatory of Arts.) But each of her works forms a world unto itself—dense with painterly, figurative, and narrative incident.

Spending twenty minutes with each piece here is a revelation.

These are magisterial pictures but not “nice” ones. In Adams’ most iconic works, she imagined herself as “Mad Sally”: a wild,

recollects.

The one new piece here, And the Bee Gives the Honey to the Rose, cleverly incorporates the attached wooden frame into the picture. Combining abstraction and figuration has become a trite postmodern cliché.

But Rose represents the approach at its best, recalling the self-referential storytelling of the California painter William T. Wiley as well British abstractionist Howard Hodgkin’s conflation of border and image.

Against a background of foggy white, brushed over a dark underlayer, a lusciously rendered salmon pink rose floats just rightof-center, cushioned by the clouds like a Baroque cherub. Chunks of impasto—pink, orange, green, and white—hover around it.

A black and yellow bee spies its target from the upper left. A rich, glowing amber color

emphasizes the frame. It seeps out along the edge where the border meets its contents as well as forming a base plane along the bottom edge. Another band, painted in blue-gray, runs atop it. Leafy sprigs (drawn and painted), as well as drips and clots of white paint further anchor the edges in a witty parody of modernist materialism.

Adams’ experimental approach in Rose clearly owes something to the works on paper that have become a recent focus.

Combining gouache and various drawing media with subtle collage, pieces like Over Lovejoy and Curley Dock and Foxglove Dreams embody a mock-sketchbook aesthetic: dense thickets of plant-life rendered with mannered frenzy, handwritten lists, digressive doodles, smears and drips. It takes a lot of talent to pull this off. •

tive. Whether through lack of knowledge or sincerity, it becomes too easy for the well meaning to pour all their superlatives on a promising but immature creator. Or say to compare an enjoyable cartoonist with little feel for paint application to some canonical modern painter.

But Joy Adams is the real thing. A retired Ithaca College art professor and Trumansburg resident, her oils and mixedmedia works on paper combine an OldMasterly feeling with an inventiveness at odds with the square professionalism that typifies today’s neo-academic crowd. This month, she is showing five pieces at the Frame Shop on Buffalo Street.

A tiny but discerning space for art exhibits, this is the Frame Shop’s first officially announced show in some time. The Shop has the enviable distinction of a close and

slovenly alter ego affectionately parodying her lower class British roots. Sadly, these are too large for the current space. With the partial exception of Strange Paradise—an epic narrative landscape that vertiginously intertwines near and far—the artist draws us up close to view eerie botanical microcosms. These split the difference between the exacting detail of the 17th century Dutch still-life greats and the looser, more implicit approaches characteristic of 19th century French and British landscape.

Night Garden and Strange Paradise have been exhibited before. Garden is a preternaturally detailed nocturne, a convulsion of mushrooms and plants—including Adams’ signature thistle—as well as worms and insects. The upright format, high horizon, scattered episodes, and winding passage of Paradise suggest Chinese as well as European tradition. Its painterly grandeur makes an ironic counterpoint to the degraded rural English landscape it

Von Suppe’s ‘Light Cavalry Overture”, Leroy Anderson’s “A Trumpeters Lullaby”, Percy Grainger’s “Theme from Green Bushes,” Dmitri Shostakovich’s ‘Folk Dances”, and more. The Senior Theatre Troupe of Lifelong will be presenting stories concentrating on the members experiences with prejudice throughout their childhood and adult lives. He founded his breakthrough power trio TR3 in the ‘80s and met Dave Matthews shortly after. W

hen I was young, my older cousin once noted that he saw Santa Claus pass over my house. My cousin laughed, and said something like “I guess no presents this year.” I was confused. It was Christmas, but it was six p.m. What was Santa doing out so early in the night, didn’t he make his moves during the wee morning hours when the mist of fantasy swirled with the lights of eternal pine? Looking back on it now, I was glad my cousin made such a statement, even if it was slight to me. The point is: Santa Claus did in fact make it to our house that year. My cousin is a liar, and I had the crumbs of the cookie I left out for Santa as proof. The moral: only listen to your inner light, it points towards the soul of infinity.

You’ll find it. That’s the mission.

Look and behold. What do you see?

The progressive jam rock behemoths Jauntee and Squid Parade hit up the Dock Thursday night. These guys get deep into the groove and psychedelic horizon, Jauntee in particular. They’re from Boston, but I think actually Saturn. They cut far into the lines of jazz, funk, and progressive rock fusion, spinning around like twisting condensed aurochs. Shades of electro House, the Grateful Dead, Genesis, and weirdo disco make these guys a good bet for some Holiday hustle.

Throw Down Cold rage the Dock the next night, brining their ‘70s hard rock and power metal to the eerie little club by the canal. It’s nice to go out, slam some cold

The film was co-created by Pamela Tan, with music composed by Joshua Handal. The exhibit runs until December 18th, 2016. The Ink Shop | 330 E State St Ste 2, Ithaca | 19th Annual Mini-Print International | This show invites artists from around the world to submit prints no larger than 4”x 4”. A juried selection of the submitted prints for

ones, and pretend it’s 1979. With solos raging in the fashion of Randy Rhoads and Ritchie Blackmore, this is your best bet to get back to where it all started: the space station on Trandex. You know, the strange and comfortable planet you visited when your cousin would stop by and be a menace. “Like A Rainbow in the Dark”.

Speaking of Dio, this is a good week to find all those classic heavy metal cassettes you grew up with, make some space in front of the stereo, grab some wine or a tea, and slam some Sabbath, some Priest, a little Twisted Sister, an album or two of Maiden (Powerslave preferably), and then get really weird. Play that Residents tape you have, you know the one with “Constantinople”, and go insane (in a good way, ha). A little Naked City, maybe you got the tape with ‘Speedball”, what a song! And escape to Trandex again with some Oxbow, one of the coolest bands that ever played.

Seriously, check them out: an experimental hardcore vision from the windy city.

You got the Downtown Boys show Friday night with locals Sammus and Escuela. That’s going to rip, obviously. Get out there a let some rage fly off you. You could be inspired to start a band yourself.

What’s better than that?

Summer Underground’s playing the Haunt Saturday night with local experimental drifters Red Sled Choir and Iris Garrison Driscoll. SU’s got a sort of visionary underground pop oddness to them. And there’s beauty as well. Chrissy Sandman is a dream. Her haunting and swimming vocals contrast effortlessly with Grant Carey’s bossa nova thump. The duo’s really cool: definitely worth checking out.

What else? Hit up Angry Mom Records. Grab some techo, some death metal, some dub, some rap, a few CD’s for the car, and a little free jazz (try Sam Rivers: he’s the man!)
