thaca Police have confirmed that an overdose call on Thanksgiving afternoon ended in one man’s death.

Police responded to a reported overdose at 106 North Plain Street, according to Ithaca Police Chief Dennis Nayor.

When they arrived at the property, they found a 35-year-old man who was “non-responsive and not breathing,” according to Nayor.

Nayor said the responding officers administered NARCAN and performed CPM in an attempt to revive the victim, and additional life-saving measures were applied as the man was being transported to a hospital, but he was unable to be revived.

Nayor did not identify the victim, because he wasn’t sure if his kin had been notified of the death. According to a wave of social media posts, the victim was local resident Dellmer Small. A letter of remembrance that can be seen in our letter to the editor section this week.

He added that no charges are currently being considered in connection with the incident.

It’s the first reported overdose death in the City of Ithaca since the summer.

In that incident, two patients were discovered unconscious in the West Village Apartment complex. One was revived and then taken to a hospital, but the other, 42-year-old Kelly Martin, was pronounced dead at the scene. It does not appear charges were filed in that case either.

Light Fest

Out with the Ice. In with the lights.

his year’s primary cold weather festival will be the Lights Festival, replacing the established Ice Fest as organizers the Downtown Ithaca Alliance (DIA) look to try something different between Thanksgiving and the holiday season.

This year, the DIA will be featuring a lights display and a series of pop-up events spread over a week and a half, called the Winter Lights Festival, a significant change from the normal weekend of non-stop activities that mark local

festivals. The event lasts from Dec. 5 to Dec. 15.

“It’s a brand new idea that the organization came up with to try to put a new face on our winter festival that we do this time of year,” DIA Executive Director Gary Ferguson said.

“The idea is to feature light.

We really wanted to showcase downtown, and do it in a way that got people interested in coming down and seeing something new and different.”

the DIA has much more time to fill, which inspired them to opt for the series of smaller pop-up events. Those will include the familiar, like the Chowder Cook-Off and Santa’s Arrival on the Commons, and new features as well, like the lightsaber tournament, a glow bar, Prismatica (which consists seven foot tall light installations by RAW Design and ATOMIC3, headquartered in Montreal), and a glow in the dark night parade on Dec. 14.

arks & Recreation Supervisor Patrick Tyrrell reported to the Lansing Town Council at a meeting Nov. 20 that there was a break-in at the tool garage in Myers Park.

Tyrrell said this has been the fourth occurrence of a break-in at the park recently where either acts of theft, vandalism or both were committed. In past occurrences, the hut at the entrance of the park was broken into and start-up money and receipts were taken from the register.

The hut was also vandalized with garbage thrown everywhere and files opened and tossed.

Tyrrell said there was no vandalism this time, and that the only thing that was

stolen was an old reciprocating saw.

“It was the best case scenario,” Tyrrell said. “Luckily, the day before the guys took all the tools out of the shop, so we got really lucky.”

Town Supervisor Edward LaVigne said this is one of multiple issues at the park that need to be addressed.

“There are other things that we’re trying to address down there also,” LaVigne said.

“Certain behavior that has become a threat to innocent people down there. Syringes were found. A child actually got poked accidentally by a needle on the beach. So I think this is something that would warrant us moving on this sooner than later.”

2016 arrest that made headlines earlier this year when its subject filed suit against the City of Ithaca has been settled, though the lawyer for the arrestee is now speaking out.

Local lawyer Ed Kopko, who represented Kyle Goldstein in the case, is calling on the City of Ithaca to be transparent about the terms of the settlement and what fixes are going to be implemented to prevent a similar incident from occurring. The Ithaca Voice reported from an anonymous source that the settlement reached “hundreds of thousands.”

The suit resulted from an incident at an Ithaca College party on Hudson Street in November 2016; Ithaca police were busting the party and Goldstein, who was in attendance, was pepper sprayed after /December

being handcuffed. The spray resulted in permanent damage to his eye, the suit claimed. The City of Ithaca, former police chief John Barber and two IPD officers, Jacob Allard and Daniel Bechtold were the defendants in the suit.

“Although I am constrained from disclosing the terms of the settlement, the people of Ithaca are not so constrained from discovering them, and they should collectively demand that the City publicly release all of the terms of the settlement, together with a statement of the training or discipline imposed upon the IPD officers who used excessive force to make an illegal arrest,” Kopko said in a statement to local media last week.

The cameras would be set up at a central location at the park and around the Highway Department building.

“Basically the whole area around the Highway Department,” Tyrrell said. “Even in the barn is covered.”

Eleven cameras would be installed at the park and the other seven at the Highway Department building. LaVigne said there have been some worries with the lack of security at the building.

“Now keep in mind we’ve had concerns over at the highway [department],” he said. “So this sounds like factoring in some improved wifi might contribute to it.”

If someone were to steal one of the security cameras, Tyrrell said it would not be an issue because the recordings would be uploaded and saved on a hard drive.

“We could change the time that it’s recorded,” he said. “Right now, I think we’re at 30 days, [which] is what we set for all of them.”

Councilwoman Andra Benson said she was in favor of the allocation.

“I think it’s money well spent,” Benson said. “I really do. I think we have to do it.”

Highway Superintendent Charlie Purcell said this is long overdue.

“I said to Pat that he’s got a reasonable process of what the options we have for people to install this stuff,” Purcell said.

“What we’re looking at is going to cure the problem.”

The Town Council voted unanimously to allocate up to $30,000 for the increased security at both locations. The money will be extracted out of the fund balance and placed into the technology fund.

The suit did not specify a sought after amount of money, though it asked for damages, both punitive and special, as well as remuneration of economic losses for Goldstein.

The City of Ithaca declined to comment on the specifics of the suit’s settlement, though Mayor Svante Myrick did issue a statement in response, emphasizing the importance of IPD creating positive interactions with the public, which they normally succeed at.

“If we miss that mark, we are committed to learning from all concerns voiced,” Myrick said. “While the city’s insurance carrier is in the process of resolving this lawsuit, that will in no way diminish our drive at the IPD for continuous training and improvement.”

▶▶ Thumbs Up - To the local colleges for making the right decision and closing down when the snow hit. It seems like a playful point of pride around here to only close down when absolutely necessary, but make no mistake: this was absolutely necessary, just based on how dangerous it was for people to try to get back into town from their various holidays last week. ▶▶ Thumbs Down - This Thumbs Down could be outdated by the time Common Council rolls around on Wednesday night, but our reporting shows that both city representatives and impacted parties were given very little warning about the new Seneca Street OurBus stop. That seems like a late-springing of a decision that has a high likelihood of unpopularity.

Common Council will decide on new OurBus location

fter several controversies, intercity bus provider OurBus could keep operating in the city of Ithaca with one significant stipulation: They will now pick up and drop off passengers from Seneca St., in front of the Starbucks at Seneca Place, if the measure is approved

by Common Council at its meeting this week.

The move is only effective for a trial period of four months while the city looks for a more suitable location. Previously, OurBus had stopped using the city’s Green Street intercity bus stop, which all other intercity bus companies use, after angering the city over an improper drop-off incident. More recently, OurBus had been allowed to start operating there again.

City Administration Committee members Graham Kerslick and Rob Gearhart voted against the measure, arguing the corner of Seneca and Tioga Streets, where the stop would be, is already too busy as it is. The resolution passed by a 3-2 vote at a meeting earlier this month.

“There’s a lot of traffic there coming down Seneca St. and turning off Tioga,” Kerslick said. “And also, a lot of pedestrians crossing backwards and forwards. I believe staff considered a lot of different options, but I am concerned since it is one of the busier intersections downtown.”

City of Ithaca Attorney Ari Lavine would not clarify why the location was chosen, saying those details weren’t available. Kerslick said he’d like to see the other options vetted with the CA Committee to see if there are viable

alternatives, especially since the current Green Street stop seems destined to close once the sizable redevelopment plans on that block begin construction.

“I think what I and other colleagues wanted to see was what other options were considered; with any option, there’s obviously pros and cons,” Kerslick said.

“We had talked about a couple of them in the past, and last night, we talked about seeing whether Cornell or the County could help us resolve this problem because we have limited resources in the City and limited space available. I think it would be good to hear what other options were explored to arrive at this one.”

Gearhart echoed Kerslick’s objections, adding his frustration at the lack of time given for committee members to review the proposal.

“My concern with creating a stop for intercity buses on that E. Seneca Street location is mostly because it’s happening so quickly and we haven’t had a chance to review it,” Gearhart said, reiterating that he and Kerslick have faith in the city’s staff but want to see for themselves. “We’d probably also agree that moving OurBus away from the E. Green Street location is an important step. I voted against the measure this week because I felt we needed more information and waiting another month would allow us to gather that from the staff and also hear about the concerns of those most directly impacted, so we can also hear about how we might need to address those.”

Garden Inn general manager Teri Tarshus, wasn’t alerted to the potential change until one day before the City Administration Committee voted on the item. The Hilton Garden Inn is located in Seneca Place, and its arrival cutout is located directly in front of the potential bus stop. While Tarshus is pleased with the work that has been done by the city to ensure Seneca Place’s concerns are being heard, she’s not totally satisfied, noting safety issues of both drivers and pedestrians, smells from gasoline and a lack of signage as her primary worries.

“The front of the building was used as a temporary TCAT spot when they were doing some construction on the Seneca Garage so we have some experience with having buses in front of our building,” she said. “But the quantity of buses is significantly different from TCAT’s everyday runs and OurBus.” In terms of the signage issue, Tarshus added, Seneca St. also offers some unique challenges since it is a New York State Road with city sidewalks and third parties being involved. The collaboration of getting proper signage will take some time, though it is unsure if it will be longer than the trial period will last. With the signage missing from the new bus stop, a pedestrian could park their car there, leaving OurBus to circle the block until the spot becomes available.

Tarshus also said she has spoken to OurBus CEO Narinder Singh about snow removal, which will be handled by OurBus through a local snow removal company.

t isn’t often (in fact, it’s probably unprecedented) that the New Yorker magazine and the Ithaca Times, with largely disparate constituencies, will run a feature on the same topic, the same week.

But it happened last month. The subject was the Kings Bay Plowshares Seven, a group of Catholic political activists who broke into the Kings Bay nuclear submarine base in Georgia in a symbolic, nonviolent demonstration against nuclear weapons.

On November 19, the New Yorker printed a piece called “The Pope and Catholic Radicals Come Together Against Nuclear Weapons.”

On November 20, this column featured a discussion with Clare Grady, an Ithaca resident and one of the Plowshares Seven.

Fittingly (one supposes), the prominent magazine gave top billing to the eminent church leader. The connection between Pope Francis and the Plowshares group is indirect, but newly distinct.

The New Yorker article cited “signs that the Catholic Church has come around to the position that Catholic activists have resolutely maintained for the past four decades,” against any measure of acceptance for nuclear weapons, and for their total elimination.

In the Ithaca Times, Clare Grady spoke of her group’s hopes for the continuing evolution of the church’s position, from technically limited objection towards nuclear weapons to outright condemnation of their existence and possession.

Grady spoke to this newspaper in advance of, but in part about, the pope’s imminent trip to Asia, which would include visits to Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japanese cities destroyed in World War II in nuclear attacks that killed hundreds of thousands, mostly civilians.

Grady’s comments at the time were left out of this column for matters of immediacy and space, but now gain immediacy with the New Yorker article about her group and the pope.

The papal visit to Japan would be only the second ever. The first was by Pope John Paul II in 1981.

Grady surmised that the rare trip was a tacit maneuver for a potent forum for a major political statement. She noted that Nagasaki is considered the center and historical home of Catholicism in Japan.

there against nuclear weapons in forceful terms; maybe new ones.

She was correct.

Reuters, the international news service, headlined the pope’s visit as a “Trip Centered on Anti-Nuclear Message.”

The New York Times reported that Pope Francis “edged close to calling for the renunciation” of nuclear capacity, and that “in denouncing any use of atomic weapons … appeared to go further than his predecessors.”

The New Yorker article quoted Robert McElroy, the Bishop of San Diego, who holds a doctorate in political science from Stanford, about a Vatican disarmament conference he attended in 2017 where “Pope Francis surprised us by rejecting … toleration of nuclear deterrence, for a mandatory ethic of progressive disarmament.”

In her interview for this column last month, Grady said “Nuclear weapons are a dehumanizing, lethal force, and not just when they’re launched. We’re violated by their very existence.” She spoke of their production and maintenance as “stealing trillions of dollars” from essential needs.

In Nagasaki last month, in striking similarity, Pope Francis called nuclear weapons “a crime against the dignity of human beings,” and said “the money that is squandered and the fortunes made through the manufacture, upgrading, maintenance and sale of ever more destructive weapons are an affront crying out to heaven.”

In his address, the pope made a rhetorical physical allusion to the imperative of humanity letting nuclear weapons “fall from our hands.”

It evoked the active physical injunction from Ecclesiastes that guides and names Grady’s group, to “beat swords into plowshares” in forswearing war.

In Nagasaki, Pope Francis said “our attempts to speak out against the arms race will never be enough.”

As of now, the pope has yet to speak publicly of the Plowshares group or movement, in any capacity.

Meanwhile, in their belief, too, that speech will never be enough, Clare Grady and the Plowshares group await jail sentences next month for their action beyond speech; for their crimes for humanity; for doing more, as their faith implores.

The team is experienced, but painting stripes over uneven surfaces in the dark is tricky.

“Night shift has its advantages,” Ed said. “Fewer drivers for the Stripers, and when our shift is over, we get home early.

Sometimes night shift folks have second jobs.”

The Stripers focus each year on areas with the most traffic/pedestrians. If Mother Nature coordinates with the team, they restripe the entire City, beginning in April, 7 a.m. around their first stop on Utica Street.

When it is too cold for the paint to take, Ed moves back to the day shift and catches up on damaged and missing street signs. Rodger Ward supervises snow clearance of sidewalks, and Ed also helps on weekends.

Snow removal on City-supervised sidewalks requires hourly attention for months on end. Not just walkers, trying to drive less and exercise more, but also people using walkers, wheelchairs, canes, parents pushing strollers—frequent sidewalk clearing makes the difference.

“We use a trackless snow plow on small sidewalks,” Ed said. A truck follows along and picks up the snow and spreads salt. Sidewalk snow removal is coordinated with City’s street clearing.”

Mike said, “The focus is ‘Keep main roads open.’ Five plows cover the City. One goes up East Hill, West Hill, South Hill and one or two cover the flats.”

Ed knows his team’s snow removal is key for safe passage, and he has no complaints. When he switches from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. start time he notes: “It’s hard at first, but I adjust.”

Signage: The Sign Shop is also tucked

away in Mike and Ed’s office. Street signs are created and mounted throughout the year. We may take signage for granted, but when we visit a new city and the street we are searching for is unmarked we get lost. We can thank Mike and Ed that back in Ithaca they have their eye out for streets sans signs all year round.

Detours: Along with Signage, Mike and Ed and their seasonal staff also set-up and maintain safe detours. Sometimes, Mike explains, the private contractor whose work necessitates the detour, arranges the detour equipment and personnel. Other times if the City must detour traffic, Mike and Ed devise a safe detour protocol. No matter who creates the detour, nor who arranges the flagging, Mike and Ed check in each day when the detour is operative, and every evening when the detouring ceases.

We take the intricate coordinated infrastructure in Ithaca for granted, but the crews that operate the extensive Water and Sewer activities, Wastewater facilities, and Streets and Facilities keep things going 24/7.

Lots of people we have never met are doing what it takes around the clock to provide the essentials that we count on as we go about our days. Not just Ithaca residents benefit from these well-oiled operations, but those who work and study in and visit Ithaca as well.

Mike and Ed and the many DPW staff who keep the complex City of Ithaca systems humming and coordinate all the systems operating in sync rarely meet the people they assist. Even rarer are the thank you’s that trickle in via the City’s website, or via the Streets and Facilities phone number. Rarer still—thank you’s delivered by the USPS. An occasional thank you letter to the editor is much appreciated also.

“In order to cover that kind of time frame, having lots of smaller events made a whole lot of sense,” Ferguson said. DIA Special Events Coordinator Scott Rougeau said he was most excited for the lightsaber invitational on Dec. 13.

Perhaps the main advantage is the display’s resistance to temperature. In years past, the ice sculptures, which were expensive to bring to town, could last up to a week or more if the weather cooperated; but with uneven, changing temperatures, it had become more likely that early December would come with temperatures well above freezing, which meant the pricey ice sculptures might only last a little more than a day or two. Plus, of course, anyone who strolled the Commons to view the ice sculptures also knows that they were often a target of vandalism by the late-night bar crowd, shortening their lifespan even more.

“A lot of people like the ice carving, it was popular and it was amazing to watch,”

Ferguson said. “But the climate was changing, and it was extremely variable.

We were spending a lot of money, crossing our fingers and hoping that we wouldn’t get 70 degree days, just watching our investment melt before our eyes. That got a little trying.”

Ferguson and Rougeau sound satisfied with the changes that have been made, though it seems that the Ice Festival was uniquely suited for change, in that other festivals will likely not see such significant tweaks to their schedules. The extended time will also allow for a bit more variety, Ferguson said, letting attendees pick and choose what appeals to them and what doesn’t.

“We don’t have to keep people’s attention for 10 or 11 days, people will come to some things and not other things,” Ferguson said. “The intent is for people to come and go, to do this at their leisure. [...]

YOUR LETTERS Beyond Family: Giving Thanks to a Wider World

t Thanksgiving we offer thanks for things that we who have them often take for granted while millions around the world do without. These include food, housing, a job, family, friends, education, opportunity, health and life itself.

In these troubled times, however, there are also people deserving our greatest respect and appreciation because they have done so much to combat the critical issues of racism, war, the climate crisis and corruption. Examples include: Contributors to The 1619 Project reported in the August 18, 2019 magazine section of the New York Times telling the truth we did not learn in school about 400 years of slavery, reconstruction, “redemption” and Jim Crow; author Ibram Kendi writing the book How to Be An Antiracist; and Ithaca singer/ songwriter Joe Crookston poignantly reminding us of what people of color face and how it eats away at them in his timeless ballad “Brooklyn in July.”

The commitment of Jesuit priest Dan Berrigan who early on opposed the Vietnam War; the courage of Daniel Ellsberg who copied the Pentagon Papers about the mistake and tragedy of that war; his new book “The Doomsday Machine” about risks of nuclear power; and the boldness and bravery of the Kings Bay Plowshares 7 who have been convicted and may face prison time for their action for peace.

The vision of Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey in proposing the Green New Deal; the unfearing and unwavering challenge of Greta Thunberg to us to do what is necessary about the climate crisis now; the Sunrise and Extinction Rebellion movements to push us to significant action; the recent declaration by the Parliament of the European Union that the climate crisis is an emergency.

The dedicated service, bravery and integrity of foreign service career diplomats George Kent, William Taylor, Marie Yovanovitch and Gordon Sondland, plus Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, in testifying in Congressional hearings; the true patriotism of them all.

Thanks for such leadership is not enough. Some of these people have put their lives on the line to expose the horrors of racism, war, the climate crisis and political corruption for our sake. It is imperative that we all act now.

s it has been well-reported, Dean Foods (Deans) filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy on November 12, 2019. Should we be surprised? No. The writing on the wall has been there for a while. Should we be worried? Yes. The most worrying part is who the biggest player is looking to buy them out (or partially buy them out) --Dairy Farmers of America (DFA).

DFA is a member-owned cooperative that buys and processes their own milk. This means that DFA should be representing the best interests of their members. However, being a processor also means that they need to make sure they show profits in that division of DFA. Recent reports have said DFA controls somewhere around 30% of the milk in the United States. DFA and Deans are in advanced talks about Deans being sold to DFA. This is an absolute worst-case scenario for milk producers all over the country.

If DFA is allowed to acquire Dean Foods, they will be securing the largest processor of dairy products in the United States. What percent of the milk will they control then? Over the years, DFA has slowly been building their control of producers and processing plants by nothing less than “hostile takeovers.”

They started with small cooperatives that were in financial trouble, then moved on to larger cooperatives that marketed their milk through Dairy Marketing Services (a subsidiary of DFA), and now have moved onto larger processors. DFA gets their “foot” in the door by giving these larger processors loans to keep running their day-to-day operations. Then, when they develop any issues, including bankruptcy, DFA moves in for the kill. This is exactly what happened with Dean Foods. It is reported that Dean’s owes DFA close to $173 Million.

The bankruptcy court has approved that Deans can pay essential customers (dairy farmers). Dairy farmers are getting paid, but their payments were about 4 days late. If DFA were to survive all the inquiries and lawsuits to buy Deans, those farmers would now be forced to sell their milk to DFA, or look for another means of selling their milk, if any other marketing option would even be available, or leave the industry.

It will be an interesting few months while this plays out. However, please continue to support your local farmer.

5 Local non-profits in need

owever many non-profit organizations you think are in Tompkins County, there are probably more.

With such a wide variety of organizations dealing with a vast array of issues, it can be overwhelming to find just a few to donate to during the giving season. That’s part of the motivation of the Ithaca Times’ annual Give Local special issue: to give people a bit more information on some of the non-profit organizations that either fly below the radar or whose range of services stretch beyond what is commonly known.

The strength of the local non-profit community is a hallmark of Tompkins County, and wherever you choose to send your money this season it’s likely going toward a worthy cause.

With all that said, the five organizations we chose to highlight this year are: the St. John’s Community Services Homeless Shelter, The Sophie Fund, Hospicare, Village at Ithaca and the Youth Farm Project.

ST. JOHN’S COMMUNITY SERVICES - HOMELESS SHELTER

Tompkins County’s housing problem, and by extension, its homeless problem, has been covered time and time again in these very news pages. But even as the issue persists, there are plenty of efforts on the ground to help address its impacts, none moreso than those at the Homeless Shelter on West State Street, run by St. John’s Community Services.

The shelter provides long-term housing and emergency shelter to a maximum of 20 people per night, capacity that is put to the test during winter when the state’s Code Blue Policy requires that homeless people sleeping on the street are given emergency housing when the temperature dips below freezing at night. During the day, the breadth of services at the facility is wide: the small red-roof building holds a food pantry, rehabilitation meetings like Alcoholics Anonymous or other meetings that provide people struggling with addiction a group forum to help cope.

The staff at the shelter also ventures out into the community, helping homeless people who prefer to live in the Jungle (the Jungle Outreach Program) or might otherwise be hesitant to seek out available services at the shelter. There are between 25-40 people consistently living in the Jungle this winter, according to Billie Jo Owens, a supervisor at the shelter, as well as about 80 people in and out of the Friendship Center during the day.

The shelter has been vocal recently about what it needs from the community: donations of clothes aimed at helping the homeless population combat the cold weather as opposed to monetary contributions. That includes scarves, mittens, sweaters, coats, hand warmers, sleeping bags, cots, soft and pre-made foods like pudding, etc. Plus general sanitation items like deodorant, toothpaste and razors are often needed in the Friendship Center for people who stop by there to take care of their grooming.

The clothes can be crucial in helping people survive the harsh winter, and also helps build trust between the homeless population and shelter staff so they may seek further services; clothes and toiletries to the shelter can even help someone find a more permanent solution to their housing challenges.

“That stuff goes a long way in helping people find housing or employment,” Owens said.

Donations can be made any time at the homeless shelter at 618 West State Street in downtown Ithaca. To designate certain donations to the Jungle specifically, simply indicate so on the box or bag.

“It’s a healthcare model to tighten the gaps in the healthcare system itself, so that when suicidal people are in the healthcare sytem they’re not falling through the cracks and dying when there is help available for them,” MacLeod said of the zero-suicide model, which has inspired The Sophie Fund to help found the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Tompkins County.

The Sophie Fund’s intention is to collaborate with community partners to support the missions that those partners are already working on, as opposed to offering direct mental health services themselves.

MacLeod said they’ve worked with government bodies, other non-profits, local education institutions and youth organizations, all with the goal of suicide prevention; the organization’s work culminated in a 2018 Excellence in Suicide Prevention award from the New York State Office of Mental Health. Plenty of the organization’s work is through grant funding as well, which they use to support programs on area campuses; separate from that, they’ve also helped run an author/speaker series at Buffalo Street Books for books focused on mental illness and hold an annual cupcake contest to raise awareness.

THE SOPHIE FUND

Even before their daughter Sophie’s funeral, Scott MacLeod and Susan Hack had decided to start their fight against suicide. With friends and family asking how or what they should donate in the wake of Sophie’s suicide in March 2016, which occurred while she was on a medical leave from Cornell University, the two decided to jumpstart an organization, called The Sophie Fund, which would work to raise awareness about mental health battles like the one their daughter was experiencing and spread the zero-suicide philosophy.

Being able to stay invested in that mission has been somewhat therapeutic for MacLeod and Hack, though that wasn’t necessarily their intention when they started. They’ve been heartened by the reception of the community.

“There’s never enough resources, people, etc., to work on these mental health issues,” MacLeod said. “We were very gratified that people from the community welcomed our involvement and participation and partnerships with us, and vice versa. It’s been a very busy couple of years.”

Donations can be made at TheSophieFund.org, which will be used to support a variety of mental health initiatives (since the entire organization is just MacLeod and Hack, there’s no overhead to cover) and MacLeod emphasized that they are willing to listen to any and all ideas that people might have about programs that could contribute to that goal. They are also running a Giving Tuesday campaign and usually have a week-long fundraiser once a year.

HOSPICARE PALLIATIVE SERVICES

Since 1983, Hospicare has been offering support for those in the last few years of their life. They offer a unique three-layer support method for the people in Tompkins and Cortland Counties. Recently, Hospicare received a gift of $100,000 from the estate of the late Cornell University professor Tapan Mitra. His gift will help them grow and expand their palliative care program. Jennifer Gabriel, Hospicare’s director of development and community relations said palliative care can be one of the best ways to help a loved one see their final days.

“Palliative care can help so many people who are struggling with the burden of dis-

“It’s also a concept that most people don’t understand right away. Our goal with this major gift is to saturate our community with information about palliative care and how it can assist at any stage of illness. We know there is substantial need in our community for this kind of care, and our first step is to build awareness and understanding.”

In 1995, the first free-standing hospice residence in New York State was established on E. King Road. Throughout the years, Hospicare has become the exclusive provider of hospice services in Cortland County. Currently, they serve over 580 families a year and provide care in private homes, nursing facilities, hospitals, and in our 6-bed residence, just to name a few locations.

The biggest challenges in keeping Hospicare going, according to Gabriel, is the lack of understanding surrounding hospice and palliative care. She said the families of most patients never realize how this support method could aid them in such a hard time. The other major challenge for Hospicare is funding since 83 percent of it comes from Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance companies. Aside from that, they rely on community members to help them out, like the popular annual Women Swimmin’ fundraiser.

“Our community comes together to bridge the gap and ensure that everyone who needs us has access to care,” Gabriel said. “The generosity of individuals, local businesses and private foundations provide the remainder of what Hospicare requires to meet community needs.”

YOUTH FARM PROJECT

VILLAGE AT ITHACA

Now in its 10th growing season, as of summer 2019, the Youth Farm Project (YFP) is enjoying a vibrant presence within the Ithaca community. As the years have gone by this program has evolved with the Youth Farm Project now serving young people of all ages.

The Youth Farm Project began in the winter of 2009 where the founding group included a unique blend of Our teens, farmers, and people who ran youth programs. The Youth Farm Project is a project of Cornell University’s Center for Transformative Action and farms on land owned by the Ithaca Waldorf School. In 2010, the YFP’s first cohort of teens spent a summer on the farm, growing food, and learning about the United States food system. Katie Church, YFP’s administrator and a co-founder of the organization, said the organization has faced difficulty generating steady funding, even as it now looks to expand its programming.

“We are a farm-based social justice education program, focused on youth and food access,” Church said. “Our funding comes from generous local donors and grant foundations, such as the Park Foundation and the Community Foundation of TC. As with all not-forprofits, we must constantly be fundraising.

We are dedicated to paying all employees a living wage, and providing employment that is fair and supportive, and this takes consistent financial support.”

Some of the other challenges, according to Church, are being able to pay their employees the minimum TC living wage and ensure their employment is fair and supportive. In 2020, YFP is looking to expand its Social Justice Initiative, now in its third year, to the Spring Semester of 2020. Church said YFP is looking to bring its Fresh Snack Program to all eight of the elementary schools in the Ithaca City School District. Currently, the Fresh Snack Program is in six of those schools, serving over 4,000 fresh fruit and vegetable snacks to kids each week for the entire school year. There are other opportunities for kids to learn about the work YFP does.

“Elementary school children visit the farm through spring and fall field trips which helps teachers and kids appreciate the equity issues inherent in our food system while helping them experience ‘where their food comes from,’” Church said.

Started in 2002 by Cal Walker and Karl Graham, The Village at Ithaca was established as a response to growing community concerns about inequity in the Ithaca City School District. Many of their initiatives are still in place today. They’ve partnered with the Equity and Inclusion Leadership Council and work together on the annual Equity Report Card. In doing this, the Ithaca City School District is held accountable for removing race and class as predictors of academic success. Working with families and students alike to work towards success for all is at the core of Village at Ithaca’s mission, said Meryl Phipps, Village at Ithaca’s executive director.

“The Village at Ithaca advocates for excellence and equity in public schools by developing strategic community relationships, programs, and services,” Phipps said. “Our programs help ensure that all students, particularly students of color, low-income students, students with disabilities and other underserved students, have access to the educational opportunities they deserve.”

In 2020, Phipps said, Village at Ithaca will be looking to expand their work county-wide. For now, they work with students and families in Trumansburg, Dryden, and Groton through their Family Advocacy Program, which provides one-on-one family-directed support for those navigating public schools, as well as a Student Success Center to provide volunteer achievement coaches for students. Along with this, though, they will remain heavily involved

with the Ithaca City School District. The challenges of running this group are that its programming is primarily volunteer executed. With small financial resources, Phipps said it can be tricky to balance funding and programming, though they have recently garnered some funding from the Human Services Coalition and the Park Foundation.

“However, maintaining grant and donor funding requires significant time and effort,” Phipps said. “In addition, this funding has no long-term guarantees and is unpredictable. As we plan for organizational growth, we are seeking funding from larger national foundations with priorities on youth and education. [...] As the Village grows, we aim to build upon our historical legacy to strengthen our work and establish model programming worthy of national funding and consideration.”

Village at Ithaca’s partnership with the Joblink Program of the Tompkins County Workforce will allow out-ofschool youth and other young people to find employment without having to face barriers. Now, the Village at Ithaca is recruiting volunteers in the hope they can expand their roster of family advocates, and equity representatives for the Ithaca City School District hiring committees.

They are also in the midst of their annual fundraising campaign.

BOCES students get peek at CMC robot

ate last month, Cayuga Medical Center gave a demonstration of one of its latest surgical robots to students at TST BOCES. The hands-on demonstration gave students a chance to work with the da Vinci Dual Xi surgical demonstration robot.

The demonstration was designed to help encourage high school students to learn more about the future of roboticsassisted general surgery. Dr. Martin Stallone, the president and CEO of Cayuga Medical Center and Cayuga Health Systems said the robot, which normally Georgia@ithacatimes.com 607-277-7000 x220 costs hospitals around $1.5-2 million, represents one of the hospital’s most Newspaper: innovative features.

“The da Vinci Xi is the latest, most advanced, robotic surgical system available,” Stallone said. “It provides our patients with another option for general surgery that has a demonstrated track record of shorter hospital stays, fewer complications, which leads to a faster recovery.”

Specifically, surgeons who are trained

on the da Vinci Xi will be able to perform numerous kinds of abdominal, gynecological, and urological operations.

Some of the new things doctors will be able to offer are roboticassisted hernia repairs, complex abdominal wall reconstruction, antireflux surgery, gallbladder surgery, surgery of the small and large intestine, weight-loss surgery, prostate surgery, kidney Client: surgery, and surgery of the ovaries and uterus. As with any new instrument of this caliper, there are some challenges associated with it.

“Like anything new, there is proctoring and training that is required with the da Vinci,” Stallone said. “I would not describe this as a challenge. As technology changes, our medical and clinical staff continue to

Making History

Parley Hannan’s run of success continues

I

recall perusing the Ithaca College Athletics website a couple of weeks ago, reading about the upcoming NCAA championships, and I wondered what it would be like for cross country runners to compete in a pack of over 200 runners, possibly navigating all manner of precipitation and lousy traction. I noticed that the men would run at 10:45 am, and the women would take off an hour later, increasing the chances that the course would be even more chewed up if the conditions were muddy.

The website said, “On the women’s side, the Bombers will be guided by senior Parley Hannan, the Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year.” That much was known. What was not known, however, was that Hannan would lead not only the ten runners representing the Bombers, but the rest of the 277 runners as well. That’s right, Parley ran a 20:53.8 (averaging 5:36/mile), winning the Bombers’ firstever individual cross country national championship by a whopping 18 seconds.

In preparing to speak with Parley, I did

a bit of background research, and I had to read her bio twice. It conveyed that she was a four-sport athlete in high school (soccer, lacrosse, swimming and squash) and I looked again to see if cross country was on that list. Incredibly it was not.

I asked Parley if I (or the bio) had missed something, and she said “No, I attempted cross country once in high school, but we ran some hills in the second practice, and I was done. I said, ‘I’ll never do cross country again.’”

Later, Hannan said, “I started running on my own. My brother was a huge runner, and I did it for therapeutic reasons. I started really enjoying it. I was playing tennis here at I.C., and I would run 6 miles before a match.”

I asked Parley about her dominant win at the NCAAs, and whether the muddy conditions (at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky) were a factor.

She said, “I didn’t think it was that bad, and I had definitely seen worse.”

There was no shortage of inner fire and desire for Parley as she stepped up to the

starting line. “I knew I had worked so hard that there was no reason for me not to win.

I really didn’t know how far ahead I was, and at one point some of the Geneseo fans were yelling ‘She’s right there!’ (referencing Geneseo’s Genny Corcoran), but I didn’t know if she really was. All I knew is how bad I wanted it.”

Knowing that my buddy Ian Golden knows just about everything about every runner in the area, I asked him if her achievement was as impressive in his opinion as it was in mine. Ian, ever

the passionate advocate of the multidimensional benefits of the sport he lives and breathes, was not brief in his answer. I loved his answer, so much in fact that I am sharing it in its entirety.

In Ian’s words, “She’s an incredible individual. On one hand it’s mind boggling that she’s gotten to the level that she now is as a runner in very short order. On the other I think what she’s now experiencing, and what the rest of us are now witnessing, is the culmination of a lifetime of experiences and challenges. She executed perfectly at Nationals. I had full body goose bumps streaming it live that morning. She ran exactly as she hoped she would. She had complete confidence that she was capable of winning, and wanted that. But, more importantly, that’s not what it was necessarily about. She ran her own race. She cut her own lines where appropriate, moved where she felt it. She ran completely in the moment, totally immersed. It’s evident that through that effort she finds herself, finds peace.

I’m really excited and looking forward to see where things go from here on the competitive front. But, I’d be no less excited for her if she walked away from competition tomorrow. She runs for reasons that are pure and personal, finds herself in those moments. I think that’s as, if not more, beautiful and worthy a cause than any award or title could bring or offer.”

Festive and Contemplative Classical Music for the Holidays

he holiday season always offers special treats, and particularly, so much beautiful music, some very familiar, some quite unusual and new. Highlights of seasonal events and services are listed below chronologically.

DECEMBER 8

The choir at St. Luke Lutheran Church, under the direction of Erik Kibelsbeck, offers “Lessons and Carols for Advent” at 10 a.m., with music by Palestrina, Ferguson, Handel and Lauridsen.

The Ithaca College annual Winter Choral Concert provides music sung by four vocal groups. The Treble Chorale, Madrigal Singers, Choir, and Chorus, led by Janet Galván and Sean Linfors, present works by Bach, Elgar, Pärt, Lauridsen, plus carols and holiday songs from Latvia and Latin America. Starts at 3 p.m.

The Cayuga Vocal Ensemble, Ithaca’s long-established and familiar group of professionally trained singers, led by interim artistic director, Melissa Rooklidge, offers “Carols Across Cultures” at 4 p.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church,

a selection of carols in various languages and featuring Britten’s beloved “Ceremony of Carols” with harp accompaniment.

The Ithaca Concert Band, our city’s community band since 1976, performs holiday favorites and seasonal songs with the Ithaca College Brass Ensemble at 7 p.m. in Ford Hall.

DECEMBER 8 AND 9

On both dates, the annual candlelit Sage Chapel Vespers service starting at 7:30 p.m. provides “Lessons and Carols” with the Cornell University Chorus and Glee Club conducted by Robert Isaacs and accompanied by organist Anna Steppler. Choral pieces ranging from the 16th to the 21st century and including works by Tallis, Schütz, and Rachmaninoff—plus the premiere of a Magnificat setting by Isaacs—are interspersed with favorite audience sing-along hymns and traditional readings by members of the Cornell community. A holiday tradition for Ithacans, the Ithaca Ballet gives us their production of Tchaikovsky’s famous “The Nutcracker,” choreographed by Lavinia Reed, daughter of the company’s founder and guide, Alice Reed.

This annual and familiar treat for the whole family is held at the State Theatre. The Dec. 13 show, including the Finger Lakes Orchestra, is at 7:30 p.m. with matinees at 3 p.m. on Dec. 14 and 15. Admission is charged.

DECEMBER 14

The second concert of NYS Baroque’s 31st season, “A Baroque Noel,” at 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church (a change from its normal venue), features Charpentier’s “Messe de Minuet” and includes popular Noels and music by Vivaldi. The ensemble will be conducted by Rochester’s renowned lutenist, Paul O’Dette. A pre-concert talk begins at 6:45. Admission is charged.

DECEMBER 15

During the Music Sunday service starting at 10 a.m., the First Congregational Church choir offers the only local presentation of Part I (the Christmas portion) of Handel’s Messiah, with strings trumpets, and soloists, conducted by music director William Cowdery.

The First Presbyterian Church choir, directed by Stephen Spinelli and with organist Ian Woods, provides a variety of music for the Lessons and Carols service at 10 a.m.

St. John’s Episcopal Church offers a service of Advent Lessons and Carols at 10:30 a.m., with the choir directed by organist Karen Hindenlang performing anthems from the Renaissance to the 21st century, including “Born a Stranger,” written for the chancel choir by area composer Crawford Thoburn.

The congregation will join in beloved hymns and traditional service settings.

The Cayuga Chamber Orchestra presents a “Holiday Pops” concert, a family-friendly event with favorite music of the season, performed by the entire orchestra plus its Youth Concerto Competition winners De c e mb e r

The Holiday Spirit Four artists bring season’s feelings to T’burg

idden above Gimme! Coffee on Main Street in Trumansburg, Second Story Studios is an artists’ colony in miniature. Visual artists in-residence help give downtown a distinctly cultured feel. Barbara Page, and blacksmith Durand Van Doren live and work nearby. Gifford has also brought in wood sculptor Philip Roberts from Southampton, New Jersey.

Friedrich’s photography pulls from her printmaking background, resulting in seductively physical images. Here she’s showing a generous selection of cyanotypes, the 19th century technique vivid in her deep blues. For those of us who desire an art of formal sophistication and metaphorical resonance, her prints stand out.

The shallow spaces and spare compositions of her still-lifes recall a Far Eastern sensibility. “Forsythia I” and “Quince” feature cut flowers in (respectively) glass and ceramic vessels, lit up against flattened dark backgrounds.

Bending this approach into Cubist fragmentation, “The Center Cannot Hold (1)” and “(2)” portray a cracked white mug—in the second setting, a shard has fallen. Warm blacks substitute for blue in added-tone pieces such as the classically elegant “Tulips” and the umbral abstractions of “Indigo” and “Shadow Play.”

Also notable are two versions of “Cold Comfort,” a snowy Trumansburg vista, dominated by the village’s landmark water tower.

Page is an accomplished artist, perhaps best-known around Ithaca for her relief mural “Rock of Ages, Sands of Time,” at the Museum of the Earth. It’s impossible to get a sense of her ranginess—in painting, drawing, and mixed-media—from a show of this size. Her pieces vary widely in style, technique, and subject: moving from the painterly to the schematic, the earnest to the comical, science to fantasy.

The encompassing link is her interest in the bird’s-eye-view. Inspired by her early experiences as an airplane pilot and embodying what the science writer Steven Johnson has called the “long zoom” of the Google Earth era, she plays with scale and distance—now miles high, now inches— while paying homage to the flattened, compressed spaces of abstract painting.

Page’s pencil and gouache on vellum pieces here are slight but enjoyable.

Using architectural plans by her father as a runway, she superimposes her own diagrams of early, turn-of-the-century flying machines. These she emphasizes with solidly painted areas: mostly black and white with accents of yellow. She treats these failed contraptions with affectionate absurdity.

In a similar vein, three ink on vellum drawings from her “Live Wires and Dead Ends” series thwart the language of the circuit diagram while also sending-up minimalist abstraction. Too, they provide a metaphor for order and disorder.

Van Doren, a distinguished artisan, is known for his often toy-like decorative and functional objects. Many of his forgings may feel ill at ease in more formal gallery settings. But his three untitled figure sculptures here bring a sense of whimsy that comports well-enough with the other artists.

One sculpture parodies Munch’s nowclichéd “Scream,” with a gaping cartoonish

head and raised stick-figure arm crowning a small table. Similarly flat and abbreviated but more abstract, a companion piece serves the same practicality. A crimsoncoated hanging head uses chain as a contour and displays a Picasso-like surrealism.

Roberts brings a similar playfulness to his wood constructions, also here untitled.

Laser-cut and carefully assembled, his small edition designs evoke a profusion of intricate architectural motifs: Islamic, Gothic, Baroque, Art Deco. This is a work an art to be admired, perhaps be bedazzled by, more so than to be contemplated or interpreted.

Several larger pieces are roughly square or rectangular—though with indented, protruding edges—and feature symmetrical designs that recall mandalas or rose windows. Built-up in many layers, they combine relief structure with an illusion of deep space. Of the smaller pillar-format pieces, most tend toward a more geometric, Deco-like style.

While each artist here has something to offer, only Page and Roberts, with their dense patternings, show much mutual sympathy. Friedrich’s photographs, with their lyrical, meditative sensibility struck me as outliers. That’s a shame since hers is the richest body of work on view.

The Ithaca Community Chorus and Chamber Singers will sing music including Bach’s “Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring” and “Chanukah Candle Blessings” with Rabbi Richard Rosenfield, who serves as cantor at both Tikkun v’Or and Temple Beth-El congregations. This community celebration is at 3 p.m. in Ithaca High School’s Kulp Auditorium. Admission is charged.

A Holiday Concert by the Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers, featuring special music of the season, takes place at 3 p.m. at Ford Hall. The group’s mission is to help promote social justice and racial healing through song.

DECEMBER 22

The First Congregational Church service at 10 a.m. features special music by brass quintet followed by a carol sing.

CHRISTMAS EVE, DECEMBER 24

At St. John’s Episcopal Church a family Service of Communion and Carols with handbells and organ begins at 4 p.m. At 9:30 p.m. is a musical prelude, featuring soprano Nicole Wills. The Festive Choral Eucharist begins at 10 p.m., with music by Adam, Handel, Ives, Schubert, Thoburn,

Willcocks, and Vaughan Williams.

The First Congregational Church holds a family service at 5 p.m. with children’s pageant and several music ensembles.

At 7:30 p.m. is the traditional candlelit Christmas Lessons and Carols service, with the Senior Choir and a homily by Senior Pastor David Kaden.

The First Presbyterian Church’s Candlelight Service, with carols and readings from Scripture, begins at 7 p.m.

At Sage Chapel, the First Unitarian Society of Ithaca provides two candlelit services of Lessons and Carols led by Rev. Margaret Weiss, at 5:15 p.m. and 8 p.m., both with music on the Sage Chapel organ, played by Stephanie Ortolano. The early service includes soprano Sharon Costianes, tenor Mark Lawrence, and brass players from Ithaca High School.

The later service features the Unitarian Holiday Choir, under the direction of Jennifer Lawrence Birnbaum, in works by Bach, Alfred Burt carols, and the Parker/ Shaw arrangement of “The Holly and the Ivy.” The Cornell chimes will also herald in the season. These services are exceedingly popular, and early arrival is recommended.

DECEMBER 25, CHRISTMAS DAY

St. John’s Episcopal Church holds a Holy Eucharist Service at 10:30 a.m., with congregational carols and guest organist, George Damp.

“Proof” Holds Up

Kitchen’s latest is a dark journey with light at the end

A

s the play begins, Catherine’s morose. It’s her birthday. It’s been difficult between her and her dad, Robert. He tries to cheer her up.

For those who know this play, winner of the 2001 Pulitzer, something marvelously theatrical is at work, yet even more crucial is that with this start playwright David Auburn lays bare the heart of his anguished, ultimately gently optimistic drama. Yes, “Proof ” belongs to that well-worn species—the American family drama. The Chicago porch and yard setting by itself registers past family dramas (Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons,” Lanford Wilson’s “The Fifth of July,” August Wilson’s “Fences”). But the fundamental turn here is towards fathers and daughters.

For me, this turn distantly evokes Shakespeare’s late romances, especially given that Robert is a type of sorcerer, a theoretical mathematician whose early work launched at least two new areas of study in the field. Robert will die in the course of the play, and Catherine is haunted by

her inheritance: she knows she shares his passionate intelligence, she dreads that she might also share the madness that hobbled him for most of his later years. “Proof ” is a play of grief, of exile (the years she has given to caring for Robert, his absence from teaching), and of healing.

All this, and then the feminist angle, which the intervening two decades have sharpened considerably. Catherine guides Robert’s grad student Hal, who has been searching through the piles of notebooks her father left behind for a glimpse of something extraordinary to publish, to the golden goose. But, she says, this astonishing proof belongs not to Robert, but to her. Not only is Hal unconvinced; so is her sister, Claire, who has returned for the funeral. Claire decamped to NYC years ago, fleeing the madness, yet serving as the small family’s breadwinner—she pays the mortgage on the house—and now she wants Catherine to decamp with her. (The split of gender roles between Catherine and Claire adds dimensions of strength

and tension to the two female characters.)

“I believe her.” This is the mantra in the #metoo era against the stubborn persistence of misogyny. Act Two is all about the wreckage that disbelief creates. Without meaning to, Claire and Hal are gaslighting the already grief-stricken Catherine until she reaches her breaking point.

Artistic Director M. Bevin O’Gara deftly helms the Kitchen’s profound production centered on a blazing performance by Aila Peck as Catherine. As is O’Gara’s wont, the production reaches for the rhythms of its emotional arc. Silences stretch, conflicts erupt, and her actors always re-gather themselves. Actors must love working with her.

Mary Louise Parker grabbed a Tony for originating Catherine in a showy, fidgety, highly neurotic performance. Peck’s traversal of Catherine’s journey tacks against such showiness. Surges of grief and hope provide the undercurrent to a self that has found a dry, lacerating, juicily sarcastic persona to guard against betrayal and loss. She’s a scrapper. Blunt. Betrayals keep coming, and Peck recovers again and again, sometimes in fury, sometimes in weary resignation. Her work is layered and brilliant in its grounded specificity.

As Claire, Turna Mete smartly counters Peck. Her Claire is all go-to, plans made, outwardly oozing optimism while obviously brittle with the need for control over her family’s abundant chaos. Mete is willing to give her a hard edge, while letting the hurt, tenderness and even fury show in the cracks.

Rom Barkhordar brings a bluff bonhomie to his portrayal of Robert. At first it registers a bit large on the intimate stage, but this base outward energy slowly reveals itself to have a complex interiority.

His Robert desperately needs Catherine’s love and physical presence, and loathes himself for this. He wants to be well, which he is temporarily. Barkhordar’s performance exudes warmth, sorrow, and intellectual passion.

Hal is a tricky role, the well-meaning guy who is just a bit too much encased in his privilege. Joseph Marrella plays him with ample humor and alternating selfdeprecation and flares of ego, in a wellcalibrated performance.

“Proof ” has adapted well to casts of different ethnic and racial backgrounds, here O’Gara has opted for a South Asian family, with that underpinning subtly signaled by original music by Saraswathi Jones. Kent Goetz’s scenic design nicely catches the autumnal feel of a house that has seen better times, as it bleeds into pages of equations and writing. Daisy Long’s lighting provides the naturalistic (and emotional) shifts in day and season against a lovely soundscape by Lesley Greene. The apt costuming is by Mary Lauve.

What Haunts You

Go behind the ghosts at Kitchen

lockmaker Arts tag for their third production, “What Haunts You,” is “Two ghosts, the theater they haunt, and the stories that haunt them.” This world premiere took place at the Kitchen Theatre Dec. 2 & 3 as part of the Kitchen Sink series.

Playwright Elizabeth Seldin calls in “an exploration in trauma, love, partnership, and our relationship to the unknown.…

[The ghosts of ] Mary and Thomas guide you through The Imperial Theatre and the secrets that live in the cracks of its walls.”

“There’s a seductive quality of haunted spaces,” Seldin continues. “Something happened there—behind the curtain— something unseen that wants to be seen.”

In writing the piece she is trying to get at the concept of love not “in the common way of signposts…but as a beautiful energy that moves through you and connects you to another. What love really is versus the blueprints we put on love.”

Director Evie Hammer-Lester sees it as “a love story that simultaneously did and did not happen [.…] It’s also about the

stories we tell ourselves to deal with our traumas. These two ghosts are very much in need of an audience.”

This is Seldin and Hammer-Lester’s third collaboration in the past year. They began with Seldin’s solo play “Et Le Lion” which performed at Ithaca’s CRS Barn, Trumansburg’s Mosaic Theatre Collective, and Theatre Row in NYC. Next was a devised work, “The Light Experiment,” performed at CRS, in which they invited actors and other artists to create a performance piece in just 72 hours.

In “What Haunts You,” Seldin plays Mary and Ithaca College alum Tyler Gardella (seen in Norm Johnson’s gypsy production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and more) plays Thomas. Playing smaller roles are locals Jasper Fearon, a senior at Ithaca High School, and Sally Shaw, a sophomore at IC. Why Clockmaker? It comes from the collaborators’ wish to “make the intangible tangible.” Time is an intangible, a clock is tangible.

They are a process-oriented company, with an emphasis on ‘portability’—just a few props, simple costumes, some original music. Their intention is to work with “people who know how to do this work,” which primarily means a developed sense of theatre and the ability to focus in quick bursts of rehearsal.

Seldin is an Ithaca native, a graduate of Ithaca High School, and of the theatre program at IC (she overlapped with playwright Kate Hamill.) She grew up on shows at the Hangar. Hammer-Lester grew up in Syracuse and fell in love with theatre through attending Syracuse Stage shows, before attending Columbia University.

Seldin spent time in London and NYC post-college.

An internship at Kitchen Theatre under Rachel Lampert brought Hammer-Lester to Ithaca. From being primarily an actor and dancer, she has metamorphosed into director and choreographer (including dances for the Hangar’s A Christmas Carol.) As a sideline, she was the Kitchen’s Master Electrician for three seasons.

Seldin explains that the two met on Seldin’s last day teaching at the Ithaca Youth Bureau, then again by chance at Collegetown Bagels. Seldin had been workin on her solo piece, Et le Lion, in NYC but “had to move home suddenly as was still invested in getting the project off the ground. Evie and I clicked right away.… Thus began our collaboration love affair.”
